  1. Father, we confess before you that we are very good at seeing specks in other people's eyes

  2. and not very good at seeing logs in our own eyes.

  3. We confess before you that we are very good at flattering ourselves

  4. too much to detect or hate our own sin.

  5. And we are also very good at hanging on to the sins of others.

  6. And Father, we confess before you as well that we can say this before you,

  7. but it's hard for us to recognize it when we're doing it.

  8. Lord, as we come to gather around your word,

  9. we ask that the Holy Spirit would move with might and power and deep conviction within each one of our hearts.

  10. Bring your word home to us.

  11. Deliver us from self-deception that we might no longer be deceived,

  12. but know the truth about you and about ourselves and about the world,

  13. and that we might live in truth and freedom to bring you glory.

  14. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  15. Amen.

  16. Please be seated.

  17. Is it me or is my thing too close or is it just my...

  18. Everything's fine?

  19. Just my hearing which is going or something?

  20. Okay, well that's fine.

  21. There's all sorts of things breaking on me.

  22. So if hearing is just one more thing, that's just...

  23. That's life.

  24. Long...

  25. Oh, I better turn on my timer.

  26. A long time ago, long, long, long time ago, I was actually...

  27. I was in graduate school for sociology, and sort of the area that I was best at,

  28. I took four graduate-level courses in statistics,

  29. and so I got hired by a couple of professors at the university to help them.

  30. They weren't as good with the statistical aspect of it, the statistical analysis of it,

  31. and so they hired me to help them because they were working on a project.

  32. And part of the project was about comparing government transfer payments

  33. or government programs where the government either adjusts taxes or gives you money

  34. and how that affected income inequality.

  35. And they didn't just want to have a sense about how that was going on in Canada.

  36. They wanted to compare Canada to other advanced capitalist societies like Canada.

  37. So, you know, Sweden and Norway and the United States and Great Britain and France and Japan,

  38. a variety of different countries were all in this,

  39. and I was doing the statistical, helping them with the statistical analysis.

  40. So we do the first run through the statistical analysis,

  41. and lo and behold, when we start to compare the different nations,

  42. the United States was in about the middle.

  43. And now I'm telling you that because I found this profoundly disappointing and upsetting

  44. because going into it, I was convinced that the United States would be the worst

  45. because everybody knows that the United States, the American government,

  46. hates poor people, doesn't care about them, doesn't give them medical help,

  47. you know, and on and on and on.

  48. And that's just where I...

  49. So we do the first run through the statistics,

  50. and it comes out the United States is about the middle.

  51. And I think that can't be right.

  52. That has to be wrong.

  53. So, you know, I'm clever enough with that type of stuff,

  54. and I, you know, I adjust some variables,

  55. and I look at different things,

  56. and I go deep diving into some of the other data, etc.

  57. We rerun things after making some adjustments,

  58. and lo and behold, the United States is about the middle, not the bottom.

  59. Not even close to the bottom, about the middle.

  60. So I have a discussion with the professors.

  61. We also say there's something must be not quite right about this data,

  62. and we have a bit of a discussion.

  63. I do some more models and everything.

  64. And at the end of it, the United States was about the middle.

  65. By the way, this isn't... I'm not leading up to a joke.

  66. I'm leading up to a confession.

  67. Because of this, I was just thinking, I'm going to tell you this story.

  68. It's about like I'm going to tell you a joke.

  69. But no, no, I'm not... I come up with a confession.

  70. So it's still in the middle, and I'm convinced that this just can't be right

  71. because everybody knows that the American political system and cultural system

  72. isn't good for the poor.

  73. And I'm just, you know, puzzled about it.

  74. Anyway, I'm a Christian, and the next day I'm doing my morning devotions.

  75. I'm reading my Bible and I'm praying.

  76. Now, if I was a charismatic, I'd tell you that God spoke to me.

  77. But because I'm not a charismatic, I don't know what exactly I would say to you

  78. because probably the charismatics are right.

  79. But it was almost as if there was a visible voice, almost like not a visible voice.

  80. That would be weird.

  81. An audible voice that came to me that said,

  82. George, you hate Americans.

  83. Now, me being a very devout Christian, as soon as I have this sense

  84. that God is almost speaking to me saying, George, you hate Americans,

  85. being a very devout Christian, I immediately argue with God.

  86. In other words, I tell him that's not true.

  87. I don't hate Americans.

  88. I'm, you know, I'm all for justice.

  89. I'm all for equality.

  90. And I start to think of all these reasons why that can't possibly be true.

  91. But it was that sense that continued to be there.

  92. And I realized I hate Americans.

  93. It was very upsetting to realize that for who knows how many years in my life,

  94. I'd carried around this prejudice against Americans.

  95. I mean, good grief, they'd never done anything against me even once.

  96. Only a few times I'd ever been to the United States.

  97. It was really, it was nice.

  98. I went to Cape Cod, you know, old Orchard Beach.

  99. And here I am, I'm prejudiced.

  100. And that's what was happening with my study, is I wasn't actually interested in the truth.

  101. I wanted to do whatever I could to find them bad.

  102. Now, I share this because what I'm describing is a human problem.

  103. And the Bible text that we're going to look at today addresses this human problem in a very,

  104. very interesting way.

  105. So it would be a great help to me if you would open up your Bibles and turn to Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3:1–19

  106. verse 1 to 19.

  107. And let's look at these stories, especially the first one, but all three of them,

  108. as it speaks to this human problem of unrecognized prejudice or unrecognized hatred,

  109. or in fact what the Bible is going to call hardness of heart.

  110. And here's how it goes.

  111. Now, just sort of pause here for a second.

  112. So they've gone to the synagogue on the Sabbath.

  113. So Jesus has gone there to worship.

  114. He's gone there to, in theory, that's why everybody has gone there.

  115. They've gone to be in God's presence, to hear the Torah, the Tanakh read, to hear it explained,

  116. to sing praises to God, to confess their sins, just to be in God's presence.

  117. That's what they've gone to do.

  118. But actually, for some of the people who are there, they've gone to accuse Jesus.

  119. And the word accuse here is from the legal word.

  120. They go to find evidence to find him guilty.

  121. They don't go to find evidence to try to figure out who he is and what he's doing.

  122. They have only one purpose, which is to find evidence that will get him in trouble.

  123. And obviously, it's not trouble with the law in the sense of Rome.

  124. Rome couldn't care less what happens in the synagogue.

  125. But in terms of, you know, while Rome obviously had a huge intrusive presence,

  126. most of their daily life was ruled by the Jewish community.

  127. And that's the community that they wanted to get Jesus in trouble with.

  128. And what we see here, that here we are, they're all gathered in theory to worship,

  129. but inwardly, some of them are actually only there to get Jesus in trouble,

  130. is a very, very profoundly human problem.

  131. If you think about it, how many churches in Alabama would have people singing

  132. how great thou art with their lips, but in their minds,

  133. they're planning the lynching after the church service.

  134. Or that night.

  135. They're in church, hearing the Bible, singing God's praises,

  136. but really what's going on inside of them is planning the lynching.

  137. We're very familiar, unfortunately, that some people, some Muslims, go to a mosque,

  138. and in the midst of their prayers, they're planning a terrorist attack.

  139. It's not reported as much, but people can be in a Hindu temple in India,

  140. and they're planning some type of anti-Christian or anti-Muslim action

  141. later on that day or that week.

  142. Or to make it more secular, they're gathered for a rally to protect the pipelines

  143. and to protect the environment, but they urge the bombing of pipelines.

  144. Oh, sorry, that one got cut out, didn't it, by the press?

  145. But, you know, it's an even deeper problem than that.

  146. It's easy to, and that's why I added the last one about the environment issue,

  147. because it's easy to say, yeah, yeah, that's the problem with religion,

  148. that's the problem, oh, one moment, that's the problem with caring for the environment.

  149. But it's also a deeper problem than that.

  150. There's something about this which is very, very human,

  151. a deep human problem in another aspect.

  152. How many people have thought, how many couples have thought

  153. they're going to have a very, very pleasant romantic moment with the other person,

  154. and one of you is having a very romantic moment,

  155. but you can tell that the other person is, who knows,

  156. maybe they're even thinking about another woman or a man,

  157. maybe they're thinking about what they should do at work,

  158. or how much they hate their mother, or something that they want to do, or sports.

  159. How many couples have had a conversation to discuss very, very deep issues,

  160. and at some point in time the woman realizes that the man is actually watching the television

  161. whenever she takes her eyes off of him, because he's watching the football game.

  162. How many times have all of us dealt with people who are very nice to our face,

  163. but you know that inwardly, you find out later on,

  164. that they were very, very, very, very nice to your face,

  165. but they were actually thinking about how to ruin you.

  166. You see, on one level, the Bible is the most profound critique of religion all the time,

  167. but if we just think of it as purely a critique of religion,

  168. we're going to miss the fact, you see, that what happens is that religion doesn't solve the problem

  169. of the hardness of our heart.

  170. As you think about these other times where you should be here for one purpose,

  171. a good purpose, like applauding or rewarding a good employee or a good boss,

  172. or you should be here for a romantic moment or for a good conversation,

  173. or to be concerned about the environment,

  174. but actually at the same time, underneath all of that, what's going on beneath the words

  175. is plans that go completely and utterly against the good purpose of the gathering.

  176. So what will Jesus do?

  177. What is the insight that Jesus begins to give to this human problem,

  178. not just a religious problem?

  179. Well, let's continue reading.

  180. Verse 3.

  181. And Jesus said to the man with the withered hand,

  182. Come here.

  183. And Jesus said to them,

  184. Now he's talking to the room,

  185. but he's not just talking to some of the people who don't know what's going on.

  186. They're actually just there to hear the Torah read and to sing God's praises.

  187. But he, Jesus talks to those that there's this other thing going on in their hearts and their minds.

  188. Verse 4.

  189. He says,

  190. Is it lawful?

  191. And really when it says here lawful,

  192. we should really replace,

  193. I mean, lawful is the right word,

  194. but he's not talking about Roman law.

  195. He's talking about biblical.

  196. He's talking,

  197. Is it biblical?

  198. Is it biblical on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm,

  199. to save life or to kill?

  200. But they were silent.

  201. And Jesus looked around at them with anger,

  202. grieved.

  203. Notice this again.

  204. I'll read again verse 5.

  205. He looked around at them with anger,

  206. grieved at their hardness of heart.

  207. And he said to the man,

  208. Stretch out your hand.

  209. And the man stretched it out,

  210. and his hand was restored.

  211. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him,

  212. how to destroy Jesus.

  213. What is hardness of heart?

  214. Well, hardness of heart is being closed off.

  215. Closed off from good things,

  216. because you're closed off from good things to pursue your own ego,

  217. to pursue your own pride,

  218. to pursue your own prejudice,

  219. to pursue your own racism,

  220. to pursue your greed,

  221. to pursue your lust,

  222. your envy.

  223. You're closed off.

  224. You're closed off from the kids that are right with you,

  225. having a family time,

  226. because even though you're with your children,

  227. for family time,

  228. in your mind,

  229. you're raging about your dad,

  230. or you're raging about your boss,

  231. or you're

  232. consumed with how you can get that promotion,

  233. or to make more money.

  234. Hardness of heart is being closed off from good things,

  235. like intimacy and justice and love and truth,

  236. to be fixated on those wrong things

  237. that are grasping the heart.

  238. And in our culture,

  239. echo chambers are hardness of heart

  240. magnified by social media and the press.

  241. Because when in doubt,

  242. you can always go to your favorite Twitter feed,

  243. or your Instagram feed,

  244. or your TikTok feed,

  245. or your YouTube channel,

  246. and you can fuel the hardness of your heart

  247. with many,

  248. many other people.

  249. And part of the thing about the hardness of the heart

  250. is that not only does it close you off

  251. to the things like truth,

  252. and justice,

  253. and love,

  254. and compassion,

  255. and intimacy,

  256. but it makes you self-righteous.

  257. I mean,

  258. those Pharisees in this particular story,

  259. they leave feeling virtuous.

  260. Let me tell you about myself.

  261. I felt very virtuous about my anti-Americanism.

  262. I wouldn't have said I was anti-American.

  263. I would have said I was prophetic.

  264. I would say that,

  265. unlike all these other benighted Christians,

  266. I was reading the book of Amos.

  267. I was reading the book of Micah.

  268. I was reading Isaiah.

  269. I was listening to Jesus,

  270. and all these other people,

  271. completely and utterly opposed

  272. to this society,

  273. not opposed to this society to the south of me.

  274. They're the ones who are living in illusion.

  275. They're the ones who have their eyes closed.

  276. I'm the one consumed with justice.

  277. I'm the one concerned for the poor,

  278. not recognizing that what I had

  279. was a great self-deception

  280. and self-blindness.

  281. My hardness of heart

  282. made me more self-righteous,

  283. more claiming a higher purpose.

  284. And part of the hardness of the heart

  285. is shown here so powerfully

  286. just in this simple little story.

  287. I mean, you think about it for a second.

  288. If Shane had the ability,

  289. God gave him the healing ability

  290. that you could come to him,

  291. and he would pray for you,

  292. and you have an arm which is bent,

  293. somehow or another deformed,

  294. and because it's deformed

  295. and connected with the deformity,

  296. I mean, I have skinny little wrists.

  297. I should have got a picture up there

  298. of the rock,

  299. his wrist or something like that,

  300. but, you know,

  301. some skinny little wrist

  302. that's just basically like two twigs,

  303. and there's no flesh to it whatsoever.

  304. And could you just imagine

  305. that you're in a room,

  306. like you come here to worship the God

  307. who's the creator and sustainer

  308. of all of all things,

  309. and Jesus is there,

  310. and he performs a miracle,

  311. and you all know going in,

  312. because it's a small community.

  313. Everybody knew Joseph or whatever his name.

  314. They don't tell you his name.

  315. I'm just picking a good Jewish name,

  316. Joseph.

  317. They all knew Joseph.

  318. They all knew that his arm was bent and twisted,

  319. that his hand would hardly work at all,

  320. and that there was absolutely no flesh there,

  321. and when he takes his arm out,

  322. good grief,

  323. the bones are straight,

  324. and there's muscle.

  325. It would be as if all of a sudden

  326. Shane prayed,

  327. and my wrist looks like the rock's wrist,

  328. not like the wrist I'm stuck with.

  329. If Shane could do that,

  330. he could pay a thousand dollars.

  331. People would pay thousands of dollars to watch it,

  332. and they're right there in the room,

  333. and that happens.

  334. In good grief,

  335. you'd think that they'd go,

  336. whoa, maybe I'm wrong about Jesus.

  337. Like, whoa.

  338. What's happening?

  339. Like, who is he?

  340. How could that happen?

  341. Like, that's mind-blowing

  342. to see something like that.

  343. And yet,

  344. all they get as a result of that remarkable miracle

  345. is a deeper desire to destroy Jesus.

  346. You have a perfect picture of the hardness of the human heart.

  347. In fact, actually, it's even worse,

  348. because you see,

  349. normally the Herodians and the Pharisees were,

  350. in a sense, enemies.

  351. Herod wasn't Jewish.

  352. The Pharisees were all about having the Jewish people

  353. follow the Jewish laws and the Jewish rules

  354. so that God would bless them.

  355. And Herod wasn't even Jewish.

  356. And Herodians were basically Herod's cheering section.

  357. They were his spin doctors,

  358. his public proponents,

  359. the ones that said that,

  360. yea, Herod, yea, Herod, yea, Herod,

  361. Herod forever, Herod forever.

  362. And normally the Pharisees and the Herodians,

  363. and the Herodians didn't care a hoot about keeping the law,

  364. but what unites them is their dislike of Jesus.

  365. And that's what often happens with hardness of heart,

  366. is before we know it,

  367. we're eating bread,

  368. and we're fellowshipping with other people

  369. who share our hardness of heart.

  370. Not a concern for truth,

  371. not a concern for justice,

  372. not a concern for the poor,

  373. not a concern for the oppressed,

  374. but they share our hardness of heart.

  375. And all of a sudden,

  376. they look like we should be spending time together,

  377. and they never even stop to think about it.

  378. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, moment.

  379. I just saw a guy in the midst of worshipping God

  380. do this remarkable miracle,

  381. and here I am filled with anger,

  382. hanging out with people I don't even agree with.

  383. What's wrong with me?

  384. And they can't see it.

  385. They can't see it.

  386. Now, there's other things.

  387. I know I have to move on,

  388. but there's other things about this story

  389. which is just really incredible,

  390. if you think about it for a second.

  391. So one of the things,

  392. as we go on through Mark's Gospel,

  393. and as you read the other Gospels,

  394. one of the things that's very obvious

  395. about these ancient biographies of Jesus

  396. is the disciples did not think

  397. that Jesus would die upon the cross.

  398. Like, that's very, very obvious.

  399. It's one of the reasons why the historical record

  400. is actually in the direction,

  401. favors the belief that Jesus really, really would rise from the dead,

  402. because nobody who knew him actually thought he'd die,

  403. and when he did die,

  404. they were completely and utterly defeated,

  405. so they definitely didn't think that Jesus could ever die,

  406. and that if he did die, he'd rise from the dead.

  407. They didn't think that at all.

  408. It wasn't part of how they understood the world.

  409. But if you think about it for a second,

  410. if Jesus could build muscle and straighten bones,

  411. he's like Deadpool without all the foul language and jokes.

  412. He's like Wolverine,

  413. those of you who know the Marvel Universe.

  414. He's like those guys.

  415. And if you think about it for a second,

  416. if he's able to take a bone that's all bent and make it straight,

  417. and if he's able to take an arm with no muscle

  418. and all of a sudden give it muscle and make the things work,

  419. then he can break legs.

  420. Like how could the soldier have ever hammered the nails

  421. into the hands and feet of Jesus

  422. if Jesus by the mere thought could break the soldier's hand

  423. and the next soldier's hand

  424. and the next soldier's hand

  425. until they all gave up?

  426. You see, this is one of the things,

  427. as you're gripped with these stories about what Jesus does,

  428. it's one of the reasons why you can understand

  429. that that very old Christian saying

  430. that it was not the nails that held Jesus to the cross

  431. but his love for you that held him to the cross,

  432. that that must be true.

  433. That's the only explanation

  434. as to why he could actually die on a cross.

  435. He could just have had those nails,

  436. but he could have just did it as a big joke.

  437. Yeah, yeah, hang me up,

  438. and the next thing you know,

  439. the nails all just go out,

  440. his heels are going to his hand.

  441. He could have done that.

  442. It was his love that held him to the cross,

  443. and it was his love that held him to the cross

  444. for the heart of heart.

  445. Some people get bothered by the fact that Jesus is angry.

  446. In fact, I've talked to people who say

  447. that stories like this show the superiority of Buddha

  448. because Buddha, of course,

  449. would have taught us methods and techniques

  450. to not be angry.

  451. Now, I'll share in a moment

  452. why anger is very problematic for us as human beings,

  453. but if you think about it for a second,

  454. people can be very, very, very anger-driven,

  455. and that's one of the reasons why anger is very...

  456. Anger is a very, very, very difficult...

  457. Anger is a very, very difficult emotion

  458. and reaction to the world.

  459. But think about it for a second.

  460. If you've ever seen some of the film clips

  461. of what Martin Luther King went through

  462. in the 1960s,

  463. if you've seen him lead some of his peaceful marches,

  464. only to have him and his followers

  465. be struck down with water hoses

  466. and attacked by white police officers

  467. with big sticks

  468. and see him and his followers bludgeoned

  469. because they just wanted the end of racism and segregation,

  470. you would not think that the person in Alabama

  471. who was unmoved by that was morally superior.

  472. You would say,

  473. how could any person not look at this

  474. and say this is deeply wrong?

  475. How could they not look at this and see anger?

  476. How could they...

  477. Like, to show no anger at that

  478. is not a sign of moral superiority.

  479. It's a sign of something broken in you.

  480. And the problem with anger is

  481. I might be feeling depressed about getting older.

  482. I might be feeling depressed about something about my finances.

  483. I might be feeling depressed

  484. because I'm not getting the promotion I want

  485. or the job isn't going the way I want

  486. or I don't have this or I don't have that.

  487. But then I get angry.

  488. And when I get angry,

  489. those things that are making me depressed,

  490. they go away, they fly away,

  491. and I have this anger

  492. which I can ride.

  493. And anger makes me tower over the others.

  494. It makes me feel like a god.

  495. It overwhelms my feelings of inadequacy,

  496. my depression, my shame

  497. with this anger.

  498. And I can be convinced that I am right.

  499. And that is why anger is such a hard thing for human beings.

  500. To not experience anger

  501. at things which are truly wrong

  502. and unjust and unloving

  503. is a problem.

  504. But it is too hard for us

  505. with our anger

  506. to just be angry in a way

  507. that reflects our justice,

  508. a sense of justice and love and compassion

  509. and what is good and right in the world

  510. without it quickly turning into something

  511. which is in fact very, very bad for us

  512. and very wrong.

  513. But what we see in Jesus

  514. is we do not see an anger-driven man.

  515. In fact, we see the exact opposite.

  516. You see, because anger,

  517. before it goes off the rails,

  518. before we start choosing anger

  519. and nurturing anger

  520. and becoming more and more

  521. and more and more and more angry

  522. and more and more self-righteous

  523. and more and more in our high horse.

  524. But when we begin that little opening moment

  525. of the proper anger,

  526. of a great injustice,

  527. a great cruelty which is done

  528. and we realize that it's unjust,

  529. it's unloving,

  530. it's not good,

  531. it's not compassionate

  532. and we recognize that

  533. and part of the recognition is anger.

  534. Just saying it that way,

  535. you see that it's connected to justice,

  536. it's connected to love.

  537. And so what we see here in this story,

  538. because it's setting up the end of the story,

  539. by setting up the end of the story,

  540. we see that Jesus says,

  541. how can you be here singing

  542. how great thou art with your lips,

  543. but in your hearts you're trying to kill me?

  544. That just saddens me

  545. and it makes me angry at the injustice.

  546. But because it emerges out of love

  547. and a concern for justice,

  548. it does not lead him

  549. to obliterating his enemies,

  550. but to dying on the cross

  551. for the heart of heart.

  552. You see here the complete

  553. and utter opposite

  554. of anger driven.

  555. But as he is connected to that

  556. which is good and just

  557. and right and compassionate,

  558. it realizes

  559. that you and I

  560. cannot fix the hardness

  561. of our hearts by ourselves,

  562. so we need a savior.

  563. We do not need the Buddha

  564. to teach us how to not be angry.

  565. We need to recognize

  566. that we have a problem

  567. and we need a savior.

  568. The next story is going to show us

  569. just to start to wind this down.

  570. The next story is going to show us,

  571. in fact,

  572. the next two stories

  573. are going to show us

  574. the hope that we have,

  575. but also the fear,

  576. the temptation that we have,

  577. the fear that we have

  578. and the hope

  579. that actually Jesus provides us.

  580. Let's look at verse 7

  581. and we begin to see here in this

  582. a bad temptation

  583. and a deep fear

  584. and it's the final story

  585. that points us

  586. in the direction of hope.

  587. Look at verse 7.

  588. Jesus withdrew with his disciples

  589. to the sea

  590. and a great crowd

  591. followed him

  592. from Galilee and Judea

  593. and Jerusalem and Edomia

  594. and from beyond the Jordan

  595. and from around Tyre and Sidon.

  596. Just sort of pause there.

  597. What this is showing

  598. is that Jesus' fame

  599. is expanding very, very far

  600. and it's going both

  601. to areas which are basically

  602. almost like 98% Jewish

  603. to areas that are sort of like

  604. 50-50 Jewish Christian

  605. and Jewish pagan

  606. and even to areas

  607. where there would have been

  608. very few Jewish people

  609. that was overwhelmingly pagan

  610. and his fame is expanding

  611. in this large area.

  612. Continuing on in verse 8,

  613. when the great crowd heard

  614. all that he was doing,

  615. they came to him

  616. and he told his disciples

  617. to have a boat ready for him

  618. because of the crowd

  619. lest they crush him

  620. for he had healed many

  621. so that all who had diseases

  622. pressed around him

  623. to touch him.

  624. Now, in the original language,

  625. there's a sense to all of this

  626. that it can't really be

  627. communicated into English

  628. and in that original sense

  629. which is there

  630. is that this is actually

  631. a bit of a threat to Jesus.

  632. The crushing him is a threat.

  633. The pressing in on him

  634. is a type of grasping.

  635. You see, what they want

  636. is in a sense

  637. that part of the heart

  638. which is still hard,

  639. it's not there's so much

  640. a hardness of a heart,

  641. but there's still

  642. at the connect of the heart

  643. this pride

  644. and this desire,

  645. this, you know what it is?

  646. It's a gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,

  647. gimme, gimme, gimme.

  648. It's not praise you, Jesus,

  649. take me.

  650. It's not falling flat

  651. on the face

  652. in acknowledgement

  653. of one who is greater than us.

  654. The temptation is to see

  655. the Jesus and the power of Jesus

  656. and go like this.

  657. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

  658. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

  659. Gimme.

  660. Gimme.

  661. Not even go in here

  662. and take out my wallet

  663. and give for the kingdom.

  664. But gimme, gimme, gimme

  665. so I can put it in my pocket

  666. and my power can grow.

  667. I can tell stories.

  668. People will buy me wine

  669. for decades

  670. when I tell them

  671. the stories I saw about Jesus.

  672. And here's the fear.

  673. Look at verse 11.

  674. And whenever the unclean spirits

  675. saw him,

  676. they fell down before him

  677. and cried out,

  678. you are the son of God.

  679. And he strictly ordered them

  680. not to make him known.

  681. Verse 11 again.

  682. This verse is very,

  683. very, very literal.

  684. Sometimes the very literal

  685. can confuse us.

  686. I use the ESV when I'm preaching

  687. because it's closest

  688. to the most literal translation

  689. that one of the most literal translations

  690. you can get.

  691. But what it's describing

  692. is that human beings

  693. have been possessed

  694. by a demon.

  695. For those of you

  696. who are in the Marvel,

  697. I think it's the Marvel Universe,

  698. think of Venom

  699. that's taken over Tom Hardy.

  700. only once again

  701. without the jokes.

  702. And these men and women

  703. who are demonized,

  704. who a demon

  705. or demons

  706. have come into them

  707. and controlled him,

  708. control them now,

  709. the spirits see Jesus

  710. and they throw their host down

  711. and have the host

  712. cry out,

  713. you are the son of God.

  714. And Jesus strictly ordered them

  715. not to make him known

  716. because he doesn't need demons.

  717. Even if demons say true things

  718. about Jesus,

  719. they'll do it in a way

  720. that after just this one brief word,

  721. it will be a lie,

  722. it will hurt,

  723. it will lead you away.

  724. You don't get the testimony of demons.

  725. But here's the fear.

  726. Remember,

  727. I don't recognize the hardness of my heart

  728. and part of what happens for me

  729. is that there's this natural part

  730. of human beings

  731. that have a fear

  732. about letting Jesus,

  733. letting the true God in.

  734. Like,

  735. part of us don't want

  736. to lose our self-deception

  737. because if we lose

  738. our self-deception

  739. and we actually see the world

  740. as it really is,

  741. as we see the triune God

  742. as he really is,

  743. and if we get close to him,

  744. he'll hurt us,

  745. he'll possess us.

  746. But you see,

  747. this fear

  748. that we will be possessed by Jesus,

  749. that we will be possessed

  750. by the Holy Spirit,

  751. that all of a sudden

  752. the triune God

  753. will so come into us,

  754. how can he not come into us

  755. in such a way

  756. that he will completely

  757. and utterly overwhelm us

  758. and take us over?

  759. What we're actually afraid of

  760. is demons,

  761. not Jesus.

  762. I mean,

  763. because you look at that,

  764. that's the thing

  765. which is so important

  766. about the Bible

  767. is that it's demons

  768. that come in

  769. and take us over.

  770. It's demons

  771. that do things to us

  772. to tell us lies

  773. and encourage us

  774. in self-deception.

  775. I'm sorry I yelled too loud

  776. and I woke up the baby.

  777. I just,

  778. I don't plan to do this.

  779. You know,

  780. I just get up here

  781. and who knows what.

  782. Anyway,

  783. there you go.

  784. But you see,

  785. really,

  786. if you look at the Gospels,

  787. what happens

  788. is you come close to Jesus,

  789. he heals the withered hand.

  790. What happens

  791. when he meets

  792. the demon possessed

  793. is the demons are cast out

  794. and people are free.

  795. What happens

  796. is you get closer to Jesus

  797. is you get closer to love,

  798. you get closer to justice,

  799. you get closer to truth,

  800. you get farther away

  801. from us versus them,

  802. your racism

  803. and your prejudice

  804. is attacked,

  805. your lust

  806. begins to try

  807. to be quieted,

  808. you're making an idol

  809. out of alcohol

  810. or money

  811. or something like that

  812. begins to be challenged

  813. and broken down

  814. and what happens

  815. when you come close

  816. to Jesus

  817. is that Jesus died

  818. for you and I

  819. to be free.

  820. It's idols

  821. and demons

  822. that bind us

  823. and control us.

  824. and bend us

  825. out of shape.

  826. It's Jesus

  827. who takes

  828. our disfigured,

  829. misfigured,

  830. muscle-less arm

  831. and makes it straight

  832. and gives it muscle.

  833. That's what Jesus does.

  834. And here's the hope.

  835. See,

  836. so George,

  837. are you saying

  838. that, you know,

  839. you Christians

  840. have less hardness

  841. of heart

  842. than others?

  843. No,

  844. I am not saying that.

  845. Remember my story

  846. at the beginning.

  847. I've been Christian

  848. for quite a few years

  849. and the hardness

  850. of my heart

  851. towards Americans

  852. I hadn't even recognized.

  853. I'm not saying

  854. anything like that.

  855. George,

  856. are you saying

  857. that if you sort of

  858. read the Bible

  859. and come to sermons

  860. and, you know,

  861. listen to your

  862. brilliant preaching

  863. and because you're

  864. such a brilliant preacher

  865. that, you know,

  866. people will go away

  867. and their hearts

  868. will be a little bit

  869. less hard

  870. and, you know,

  871. and, no,

  872. no,

  873. that's not,

  874. here's the Christian hope.

  875. You see,

  876. if the first story

  877. talks about

  878. this double mystery,

  879. the mystery

  880. of the fact

  881. that,

  882. you know,

  883. that the Pharisees

  884. and Herodians

  885. are planning

  886. to destroy Jesus,

  887. they can't really

  888. destroy him

  889. if he has the power

  890. that it is.

  891. It's pointing to this

  892. mystery of his

  893. upcoming death

  894. and the fact

  895. that his death,

  896. it's only going

  897. to be his love

  898. that holds them

  899. to the cross.

  900. Well,

  901. look what happens

  902. here,

  903. verse 13,

  904. and he went up

  905. on the mountain

  906. and called to him

  907. those whom he desired

  908. and they came to him.

  909. In the original language,

  910. this is very formal,

  911. solemn language.

  912. It's a solemn language.

  913. And he went up

  914. on the mountain

  915. and called to him

  916. those whom he desired

  917. and they came to him.

  918. And it's talking

  919. about the fact

  920. that in other places

  921. in the New Testament

  922. you'd find out

  923. that Jesus had

  924. lots more disciples

  925. than the twelve.

  926. Mary Magdalene

  927. was a disciple.

  928. Joseph,

  929. Jose was a disciple.

  930. Matthias was a disciple.

  931. He had many,

  932. many disciples,

  933. but out of these

  934. many disciples

  935. he goes to the mountain

  936. and verse 14,

  937. he appointed twelve

  938. whom he also named

  939. apostles

  940. so that they might

  941. be with him

  942. and he might send

  943. them out to preach

  944. and have authority

  945. to cast out demons.

  946. He appointed the twelve,

  947. Simon,

  948. to whom he gave

  949. the name Peter,

  950. James,

  951. the son of Zebedee,

  952. and John,

  953. the brother of James,

  954. to whom he gave

  955. the name Boanerges,

  956. that is,

  957. the sons of thunder,

  958. Andrew and Philip

  959. and Bartholomew

  960. and Matthew

  961. and Thomas

  962. and James,

  963. the son of Alphaeus

  964. and Thaddeus

  965. and Simon the Zealot

  966. and Judas Iscariot

  967. who betrayed him.

  968. Another implication

  969. of the coming death

  970. that he's going

  971. to have on the cross.

  972. But here's the hope.

  973. And in the original language

  974. in verse 14

  975. when it says

  976. he appointed twelve

  977. and then again

  978. in verse 16

  979. he appointed the twelve.

  980. In verse 14

  981. when it says

  982. he appointed,

  983. that's a good word

  984. in English

  985. but the problem

  986. is the original language,

  987. you can't translate

  988. the original language

  989. in a way

  990. that makes grammatical sense

  991. in English

  992. without adding

  993. a lot of extra words.

  994. And the actual literal word

  995. is

  996. and he

  997. make,

  998. he made,

  999. he made

  1000. twelve.

  1001. Same in verse 16

  1002. he made

  1003. the twelve.

1004. And if you go back

  1005. and you read

  1006. Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1007. when the Jewish text

  1008. was translated

  1009. into Greek

  1010. the same word

  1011. made

  1012. is there

  1013. when it said

  1014. and God made

  1015. the heavens

  1016. and the earth.

  1017. When God made

1018. the night and the day

  1019. God made

1020. the sun and the stars

  1021. God made

  1022. human beings.

  1023. That word made

1024. is the same word here

  1025. that's translated

  1026. as appointed

  1027. because

  1028. he made twelve

  1029. doesn't really make sense

  1030. in English

1031. so they use the word

  1032. appointed

1033. but this word is made.

1034. And if you look at

  1035. verse 14 again

  1036. and he made

  1037. apostles

  1038. he made them

  1039. so that they might

  1040. be with him

  1041. and he might

  1042. send them out

  1043. to preach

  1044. and have authority

  1045. to cast out demons.

  1046. He makes them first.

1047. You see this is what's saying

  1048. what the Bible

  1049. is saying

  1050. this is the wonderful

  1051. thing about the gospel

  1052. is that Jesus

  1053. he's angered

  1054. at our hardness

  1055. of heart

  1056. it grieves him

  1057. but he doesn't let

  1058. the anger

  1059. he never becomes

  1060. anger driven

  1061. the anger is connected

  1062. to that which

  1063. anger should be connected

  1064. we can't keep

  1065. connected to that

  1066. because we

  1067. build it up

  1068. we flame it up

  1069. and anger

  1070. quickly leads us

  1071. to no longer

  1072. being just

  1073. to no longer

  1074. being compassionate

  1075. to no longer

  1076. being loving

  1077. to no longer

  1078. caring

  1079. but he

  1080. it doesn't drive

  1081. that with Jesus

  1082. it's connected

  1083. to his love

  1084. it's connected

  1085. to his justice

  1086. it's connected

  1087. to mercy

  1088. it's connected

  1089. to compassion

  1090. and so he's going

1091. to die upon the cross

  1092. and when he dies

  1093. upon the cross

  1094. he is doing

  1095. something for us

  1096. as human beings

  1097. that we cannot

  1098. do for ourselves

  1099. and when we receive

  1100. Christ

  1101. he makes us

  1102. a Christian

  1103. he makes us

  1104. right with God

  1105. you see

  1106. it's not

  1107. okay my heart's

  1108. a little bit less

  1109. hard

  1110. as a result

  1111. of this sermon

  1112. and next week

  1113. it's a little bit

  1114. less hard

  1115. and then it's a little

  1116. bit less hard

  1117. and finally my heart

  1118. becomes so soft

  1119. that I get awarded

  1120. being a Christian

  1121. it's the opposite

  1122. the work of grace

  1123. is that God

  1124. makes you

  1125. and me

  1126. with our hard

  1127. hearts

  1128. his

  1129. out of grace

  1130. by what he did

1131. for us on the cross

  1132. and then we become

  1133. we become

  1134. because we're made

  1135. by him

  1136. first

  1137. we don't become

1138. we don't just sort of

  1139. keep becoming

  1140. until we achieve

  1141. he makes us

  1142. and then we become

  1143. look at verse 14

  1144. he appointed the 12

  1145. whom he also named

  1146. apostles

1147. and he gives two purposes

1148. that they might be with him

1149. and he might send them

  1150. out to preach

  1151. and have authority

  1152. to cast out demons

  1153. he makes us

  1154. unworthy as we are

  1155. to be his

  1156. and he makes us

  1157. unworthy as we are

  1158. to be his

  1159. so that we will

  1160. spend time with Jesus

1161. and as we spend time

  1162. with Jesus

  1163. that the Lord

  1164. begins to reveal

  1165. to us prejudice

  1166. and racism

  1167. and a hard

  1168. heart towards the poor

  1169. and greed

  1170. and an idolatry

  1171. of money

  1172. or an idolatry

  1173. of ourselves

  1174. or pride

  1175. or selfishness

1176. and because he makes us his

1177. and we spend time with him

  1178. he begins to

  1179. confront these things

  1180. in us

1181. and to change these things

  1182. within us

  1183. within the context

  1184. that everything

1185. that we needed to do

  1186. to be made right

  1187. with God

  1188. was done by Jesus

  1189. he knows everything

  1190. about our heart

1191. so we can look at ourselves

  1192. without becoming

  1193. thinking

  1194. oh my

  1195. if God knew that

  1196. about me

  1197. he wouldn't

  1198. no no

  1199. he did know that

  1200. about you

  1201. when he died

  1202. for you

1203. and that as we get

  1204. closer to Jesus

  1205. and you look at

  1206. there's another place

  1207. later on

  1208. where I'll talk about

  1209. this other purpose

  1210. what is the purpose

  1211. as we spend time

  1212. with him

1213. because he's made us him

1214. that we will bear witness

  1215. to Jesus

1216. and that we will be

  1217. against evil

  1218. in whatever form

  1219. whether it's

  1220. spiritual evil

1221. which has to be exercised

  1222. whether it's

  1223. institutional evil

1224. it leads to great injustice

  1225. or any type of

  1226. institutional wrongdoing

  1227. against the poor

  1228. or others

  1229. we are against it

  1230. we're against the evil

  1231. and the idolatry

  1232. of greed

  1233. and gluttony

  1234. and other things

  1235. which bend human beings

  1236. out of shape

  1237. and break them

1238. that we are against it

1239. and that we are for healing

  1240. to bring the healing

  1241. to the city

  1242. to bring healing

  1243. to people

  1244. to bring healing

  1245. to our country

  1246. he makes us

  1247. and he makes us

1248. and we are to spend time

  1249. with him

  1250. to be with him

  1251. if you're watching this

  1252. if you haven't given

  1253. your life to Christ

  1254. if you're here

  1255. and you haven't given

  1256. your life to Christ

  1257. this is the time

  1258. to give your life

  1259. to Christ

  1260. call out to him

  1261. and say

  1262. Lord I need you

  1263. to be my savior

1264. and for those of us

  1265. who are here

  1266. who have done that

1267. you don't have to give

1268. your life to Christ again

  1269. he already took it

  1270. it's a time

  1271. for us to remember

  1272. it is good

  1273. to be here

  1274. and to recommit

  1275. to this

  1276. to recommit

  1277. to be Lord

  1278. in your presence

  1279. that we might go

  1280. from here

  1281. and we might deal

  1282. with whether it's

  1283. demonic evil

  1284. or institutional evil

  1285. or social evil

  1286. or cultural evil

  1287. or intellectual evil

  1288. that we will be

  1289. against it

  1290. that we will be

  1291. for the health

  1292. of our community

  1293. and our society

  1294. and our nation

  1295. and the world

1296. we will be for this

1297. we will be against evil

  1298. it is good

  1299. to be here

  1300. to reconnect

  1301. to remember

  1302. Lord is it me

  1303. show me the hardness

  1304. of my heart

  1305. grant me help

  1306. that I might repent

  1307. of that hardness

  1308. of my heart

  1309. that that might not

  1310. control me

1311. that I not be controlled

  1312. and have my eyes

  1313. and my heart

  1314. and my ears

  1315. blinded to the

  1316. not just to good

1317. to that which is good

  1318. and just and true

  1319. and right

  1320. but the beauty

  1321. of the world

  1322. and the beauty

  1323. in human beings

  1324. that those

  1325. things of my heart

  1326. that are hard

  1327. that make me bent

  1328. and shriveled

  1329. and less than human

  1330. Lord

  1331. show me those things

  1332. in your mercy

  1333. that I might repent

  1334. of them

  1335. that I might know

  1336. your freedom

1337. I invite you to stand

  1338. please stand

  1339. let's bow our heads

  1340. in prayer

  1341. Father we thank you

  1342. for Jesus

  1343. we ask Lord

  1344. that your word

  1345. would so work

  1346. and move within us

  1347. and Father

  1348. not that we be

  1349. blind to evil

  1350. or definitely

  1351. not that Father

  1352. that we see evil

  1353. clearly

  1354. that we see evil

  1355. clearly

  1356. and Father

  1357. it grants us

  1358. both a proper anger

  1359. that doesn't become

  1360. controlling

  1361. but a desire

  1362. Father

  1363. to see justice

  1364. and goodness done

  1365. that you'd show us

  1366. and reveal to us

1367. the hardness of our heart

  1368. the blindness

  1369. that we have

  1370. Father

  1371. show that to us

1372. and as you show it to us

  1373. remember

  1374. help us to remember

  1375. Jesus

  1376. and the gospel

1377. that we might come to you

  1378. for amendment of life

  1379. for healing

  1380. for restoration

  1381. for renewal

  1382. Father

  1383. Father you know

  1384. in this room

  1385. the different ethical

  1386. and other issues

  1387. that people here face

  1388. whether it's in government

  1389. or in our neighborhoods

  1390. or our business

  1391. and Father

1392. we ask for each one of us

  1393. that you help us

1394. to bear witness to Jesus

  1395. and also Father

  1396. be a source

  1397. and an agent

  1398. of healing

  1399. of reconciliation

  1400. of compassion

  1401. of right ordering

  1402. in those places

1403. that you have put us

  1404. and help us

1405. to be people of prayer

1406. we ask all these things

1407. in the name of Jesus

  1408. your son

  1409. and our savior

1410. and all God's people said

  1411. amen

  1412. amen
