  1. Okay. Okay, good morning, everybody. Great to see many of you that we haven't seen for months and months.

  2. Welcome back to church. It is really wonderful to be able to gather and to worship and to see you face to face.

  3. So great to have you with us this morning.

  4. The feeling I get is our family did some camping over the last few months.

  5. And, you know, when you camp, you sleep really badly.

  6. And so, like, every half an hour, you're looking at your watch or your phone and how long until morning.

  7. And it's like half past two.

  8. And you kind of doze back to sleep and you wake up and you look at your phone and it's only three o'clock.

  9. And you're kind of waiting for the sun to rise.

  10. And then eventually, at around half past five, you see the first rays of sun.

  11. And it feels like morning is coming.

  12. And in some ways, I feel like morning is coming.

  13. The rays of sun are starting to begin to shine.

  14. And hopefully, we are moving towards some level of normality.

  15. But it's really wonderful to be with you all today.

  16. Now, one of the questions I want us to ask is, we kind of like life is transitioning.

  17. Hopefully, the fifth wave is coming to an end and is going to be buried.

  18. Hopefully, there won't be a sixth wave.

  19. But, you know, but for now, we're in this transition.

  20. And what might God want to say to us as the fifth wave passes, as we go back to school and back to work, as we start together, as life starts to get back to normal, what might God want to say to us this morning?

  21. Well, we're going to look at a passage.

  22. Annabelle's going to come and read to us in a few minutes' time.

  23. And we're looking at this passage.

  24. That's a very well-known passage.

  25. But the reason we're going to look at it is because this passage in Deuteronomy 6, the nation of Israel, are also at a time of transition.

  26. And a time of transition for two reasons.

  27. The one reason is because Israel is coming out of the wilderness.

  28. If you know the story of the Bible, they left Egypt.

  29. They came into the wilderness.

  30. And they've been there for 40 years.

  31. And for 40 years, they've wandered through the wilderness, kind of in this limbo stage, neither in the promised land, but also not back in Egypt, wondering, are they coming or are they going?

  32. They've been waiting to go into the promised land, this land that is described as a place of rest, a place of milk and honey.

  33. And they've been waiting.

  34. And now at this juncture, they are finally ready to get into the promised land.

  35. They're about to go in.

  36. And so Moses speaks to them these words on the cusp of this new season.

  37. But the other reason why Israel is in this transition is because Moses, the great leader, the guy who helped Israel come out of Egypt and into the promised land, he's not going to go in with them.

  38. He is old and he's about to die.

  39. And he's going to hand over the reins to Joshua, the new young leader.

  40. And so in some ways, the book of Deuteronomy that we're going to look at is Moses' final sermon to the people of God, the nation of Israel.

  41. It's kind of like his last words.

  42. As they go into their next season, these are his final words to them.

  43. He's led them out of Egypt.

  44. He's led them through the wilderness for 40 years.

  45. They're about to go in.

  46. And he's not going with them.

  47. And so this is what Moses wants to say to them.

  48. What might God want to say to them in this next season?

  49. And what might God want to say to us as we come out of the fifth wave and into this season of normalcy to some degree?

  50. Well, Annabelle is going to come and read God's word to us from Deuteronomy chapter 6, and then I'll pick up again.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  51. The scripture reading today comes from the selected portions of Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  52. If you read along in the bulletin, note that we have the entire chapter printed for your reference.

  53. So please skip to the appropriate verse.

  54. Starting from verse 6, we read.

  55. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  56. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

  57. And these words I command you today shall be on your heart.

  58. You shall teach them diligently to your children and talk of them when you sit in your house

  59. and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise.

  60. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontless between your eyes.

  61. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

  62. And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob,

  63. and to give you with great and good cities that you did not build,

  64. and houses full of good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig,

  65. and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant.

  66. And when you eat and are full, then take care, lest you forget the Lord,

  67. who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  68. It is the Lord your God you shall fear.

  69. Him you shall serve, and by his name you shall swear.

  70. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you.

  71. For the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God.

  72. Lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you,

  73. and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

  74. Then from verse 20,

  75. When your son asks you in time to come,

  76. what is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules

  77. that the Lord our God has commanded you?

  78. Then you shall say to your son,

  79. We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt,

  80. and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

  81. And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous,

  82. against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household before our eyes.

  83. And he brought us out from there,

  84. that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers.

  85. And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes,

  86. to fear the Lord our God for our good always,

  87. that he might preserve us alive as we are this day.

  88. And it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to do all this commandment

  89. before the Lord our God as he has commanded us.

  90. This is the word of God.

  91. Amen.

  92. Okay, great.

  93. Thank you.

  94. Let's just pray briefly as we look at this passage.

  95. Heavenly Father, we come before your word this morning.

  96. In this season where things are starting to open up,

  97. we can start to gather as a church and worship and sing and pray.

  98. Kids can go back to school and we can go back to the office.

  99. God, this season of transition,

  100. we want to steward this season ahead of us well.

  101. We don't just want to get sucked into the rat race of life.

  102. And before we know it, life is just the way it's always been.

  103. And yet we forget about you.

  104. So Father, we pray, come and speak to us.

  105. Let your word come and find a place in our heart.

  106. God, you know where each one of us are at this morning.

  107. And won't you come by your spirit and meet us, God,

  108. and both encourage us and challenge us.

  109. And let your word speak to us.

  110. We ask you to be here in your awesome name.

  111. Amen.

  112. So this passage that Annabelle read to us,

  113. along with two other passages,

  114. Deuteronomy 11 and Numbers 15,

  115. in the Jewish faith is called the Shema.

  116. And the Shema makes up the prayers,

  117. the daily prayers that Orthodox Jews will pray

  118. every morning and every evening.

  119. It's like some of the most important part of their scriptures

  120. and what they will pray on a daily basis.

  121. And the word Shema in Hebrew means hear or listen.

  122. And it comes from the first word in verse 4.

  123. Annabelle read it to us.

  124. Hear, O Israel.

  125. In verse 3 again, I think,

  126. Hear, therefore, O Israel.

  127. Listen up.

  128. Turn your attention to me.

  129. If you have children,

  130. I'm sure you've gone through this experience.

  131. Claire and I had this recently at the dinner table

  132. where we had to explain to our children

  133. the difference between hearing and hearing.

  134. Right?

  135. There's a difference between hearing the audio sounds

  136. and actually responding or paying attention.

  137. So you say to your kids,

  138. Okay, dinner is here.

  139. Let's come to the table.

  140. And they're grossed in a book

  141. or they're drawing something

  142. or they're watching something.

  143. And what do they say?

  144. They say,

  145. Yes, yes, I'm coming now.

  146. And then three minutes later,

  147. you call them again.

  148. Say,

  149. I'm coming.

  150. I'm just finishing the page.

  151. And then seven minutes later,

  152. you've got to call them again.

  153. And they're listening.

  154. They're responding.

  155. They're nodding their heads,

  156. but they're not listening.

  157. Right?

  158. Or maybe you've had this

  159. where you're trying to have a conversation

  160. with somebody

  161. and they are on their phone.

  162. And they're nodding their head

  163. and they're saying,

  164. Mm-hmm.

  165. Uh-huh.

  166. Yeah, I'm listening to you,

  167. but they're not really listening.

  168. Right?

  169. Well, God here speaks to His people.

  170. And at this critical juncture

  171. in Israel's life and history,

  172. they've just come out of this

  173. season in the wilderness

  174. and God doesn't want them

  175. just to politely nod their heads

  176. and say,

  177. Mm-hmm.

  178. We're listening.

  179. He wants their attention.

  180. I'll often say to my girls

  181. when they're not listening,

  182. I'll say,

  183. Okay, look me in the eye.

  184. I want your attention.

  185. Are you listening to me?

  186. Hear, O Israel.

  187. Listen up.

  188. I've got something important

  189. to say to you.

  190. And what does God want to say

  191. to His people?

  192. Well, look what He says.

  193. Hear, O Israel,

  194. The Lord our God,

  195. the Lord is one.

  196. You shall love the Lord your God

  197. with all your heart

  198. and with all your soul

  199. and with all your might.

  200. These commands that I'm giving you today

  201. shall be on your heart.

  202. Now, this passage is obviously very famous

  203. because later on, you know,

  204. in the Bible and the Gospels,

  205. somebody comes to Jesus and says,

  206. Jesus, there are 600 commands

  207. in the Old Testament.

  208. Which one is the most important?

  209. I mean, out of 600,

  210. I can't do all of them.

  211. What must I prioritize?

  212. And Jesus picks this very verse.

  213. You shall love the Lord your God

  214. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  215. And so all Israel knew

  216. this was kind of the central command

  217. along with, you know,

  218. the first of the Ten Commandments

  219. in chapter 5.

  220. You shall have no other gods before me.

  221. This was the central command

  222. for Israel in the Old Testament.

  223. On Wednesday afternoons

  224. at the office,

  225. we have a preaching meeting

  226. where we always review

  227. the last Sunday sermon

  228. and give critical feedback.

  229. And then the preacher needs to present

  230. some ideas and thoughts

  231. for the coming Sunday.

  232. And we always ask this question,

  233. in one sentence,

  234. what are you actually trying to say?

  235. Because if you can't summarize

  236. in one sentence,

  237. you don't know what you're saying, right?

  238. It's a good test.

  239. In our CG,

  240. we often say at the end of Thursday night,

  241. okay, in one sentence,

  242. what does God try to say to you tonight?

  243. Summarize it.

  244. Well, you could take

  245. the book of Deuteronomy,

  246. Moses' final sermon,

  247. and in some ways,

  248. summarize it in one sentence.

  249. Moses, what are you saying to us?

  250. As we go into this next season,

  251. the promised land,

  252. what are you saying?

  253. You shall love the Lord your God

  254. with all your heart,

  255. all your soul,

  256. all your might.

  257. Well, Lord willing,

  258. this won't be my final sermon

  259. at Watermark.

  260. Hopefully,

  261. we've got many more years here.

  262. But we face the same situation.

  263. We're kind of coming out

  264. of this holding pattern,

  265. being neither in Egypt,

  266. but neither in the promised land.

  267. We're in this kind of limbo.

  268. It hasn't quite been 40 years,

  269. even though it might feel like that

  270. for some of us.

  271. But we're in this pattern.

  272. What does God want to say to us?

  273. Here, O people of Watermark,

  274. people of Hong Kong,

  275. listen up.

  276. The Lord our God,

  277. the Lord is one.

  278. We shall love God

  279. with all of our heart,

  280. soul, mind, and strength.

  281. Now, this passage,

  282. this verse is very famous,

  283. but what does it actually mean?

  284. What does God actually say?

  285. Well, the point that God is making here

  286. is that God's people

  287. are to be those who treasure God

  288. and trust Him

  289. and are devoted to Him

  290. with all that they have

  291. in every area of their life.

  292. The point here isn't that

  293. we are meant to spend hours debating.

  294. What does Moses mean by heart

  295. and what does he mean by soul?

  296. You know, what part of you

  297. is your heart?

  298. What is your soul?

  299. Why does Jesus add mind,

  300. but Moses forgets to add mind?

  301. The point here,

  302. Moses isn't giving us

  303. a diagnostic of the faculties

  304. of the human being.

  305. The point really is

  306. all of your life

  307. and every area of your life,

  308. bring that before God

  309. and treasure Him

  310. and trust Him

  311. and devote yourself to Him

  312. in all of those areas.

  313. In fact,

  314. you see,

  315. in the ancient world,

  316. almost every culture

  317. understood

  318. and was quite comfortable

  319. with the idea

  320. of the plurality

  321. of various deities

  322. and gods.

  323. And so every culture

  324. in the ancient world

  325. would recognize,

  326. there's many gods, right?

  327. There's the God of the Jews

  328. and there's the God

  329. of the Babylonians

  330. and the God of the Canaanites.

  331. There's the God of the sun

  332. and the moon

  333. and the water

  334. and the war

  335. and fertility

  336. and all these things.

  337. But the general consensus was,

  338. you can worship

  339. whatever god you want,

  340. but when you come

  341. into our territory,

  342. you know,

  343. if you're going to come

  344. and live in Canaan,

  345. well, then you honor our gods.

  346. If you're going to go

  347. and live in Babylon,

  348. well, then you honor

  349. the gods of the Babylonians.

  350. So everyone was okay

  351. with the idea

  352. that there's many gods.

  353. Just don't come

  354. and disrespect our God

  355. when you live here.

  356. And of course,

  357. they also agree

  358. there are many gods

  359. for many parts of your life.

  360. You want to have a child?

  361. Okay, well,

  362. you pray to the God

  363. of fertility.

  364. You're going to go off to war?

  365. You honor the God of war,

  366. et cetera, et cetera.

  367. And so what would happen

  368. is that the nation of Israel,

  369. they were tempted

  370. to do the same thing,

  371. to take on this same worldview.

  372. And so on Sunday

  373. or Sabbath then,

  374. I guess they go to the,

  375. on Saturday,

  376. they go to the Sabbath

  377. and they bring their offerings

  378. and they worship

  379. and they praise God.

  380. But then the rest of life,

  381. they want to do other things.

  382. They worship those gods.

  383. If you're going off to war,

  384. you praise the God of war.

  385. You want to have a child,

  386. you honor the God of fertility.

  387. And so like the rest

  388. of the nations around them,

  389. Israel was tempted

  390. to honor God supremely,

  391. primarily,

  392. but have these other gods

  393. in their lives.

  394. I recently read a story

  395. of a pastor from Africa.

  396. And I didn't know him,

  397. good thing.

  398. He was offering various body parts

  399. of a young lady

  400. that had died in his village.

  401. And so he went to the cemetery

  402. and he bought these body parts

  403. and he would offer them

  404. to the spirits

  405. as a special offering

  406. to drive out the evil spirits

  407. and to try and secure blessing

  408. and prosperity for his life.

  409. Okay?

  410. But he's a pastor.

  411. And so someone challenged him

  412. and said,

  413. hang on,

  414. hang on,

  415. aren't you like meant

  416. to be a man of God?

  417. How can you do this

  418. spirit worship

  419. at the same time?

  420. And he said,

  421. yes,

  422. I am a man of God.

  423. I only do this

  424. outside of church hours.

  425. Okay?

  426. And we laugh at that,

  427. right?

  428. When I read that as well,

  429. I thought,

  430. you've got to be kidding.

  431. We laugh at that

  432. and we think that is

  433. so primitive, right?

  434. That is so ancient, right?

  435. You people from Africa,

  436. you're so primitive, right?

  437. But don't we do

  438. the same thing

  439. in our own kind of way?

  440. We come on Sundays

  441. and we worship God

  442. and we sing,

  443. God and God alone.

  444. Yes, yes,

  445. and we worship God

  446. and we take communion.

  447. But on Monday to Friday,

  448. we go into our city

  449. and we are tempted

  450. to offer a special offering

  451. as the word

  452. to the various gods

  453. and idols of our own world.

  454. And so on Sunday,

  455. we worship God

  456. and we take communion.

  457. But on Monday,

  458. we sacrifice

  459. on the altar of Korea

  460. our families

  461. and our marriages

  462. and our children.

  463. Or we sacrifice

  464. our ethics

  465. and our principles

  466. on the altar

  467. of financial security

  468. and stability.

  469. Or we sacrifice

  470. on the altar

  471. of people pleasing

  472. our convictions

  473. and our honoring of God.

  474. And so in the same way,

  475. we can do exactly

  476. what Israel

  477. and these other people

  478. are doing.

  479. But God is saying here

  480. that when we do that,

  481. when we limit God

  482. to one facet of our life,

  483. to say forgiveness of sin

  484. or to Sundays

  485. or to eternal life

  486. or one facet of our lives,

  487. actually we reduce God

  488. into an idol

  489. just like the other idols

  490. of the nations around us

  491. and the idols of our lives.

  492. But look at what God

  493. wants to say here.

  494. He says,

  495. the Lord our God,

  496. the Lord is one.

  497. And the Hebrew there

  498. can be translated

  499. in various ways.

  500. If you have a Bible,

  501. you'll see there are probably

  502. notes at the bottom.

  503. There's a couple of different ways

  504. it can be translated.

  505. But the big idea here

  506. is the Lord,

  507. Yahweh is His name,

  508. He is the one true God.

  509. He's not just

  510. the God of Israel.

  511. He's not just

  512. the God of the Jews.

  513. He's not just

  514. the God of salvation

  515. or atonement

  516. or forgiveness of sins

  517. or the God

  518. who got you out of Egypt.

  519. He is not just

  520. the bombshell to God

  521. that we kind of

  522. keep on standby

  523. and when things go badly

  524. we kind of rush

  525. and take refuge in Him.

  526. He is the one true,

  527. true, eternally sovereign

  528. Lord of all creation

  529. of all universes.

  530. If there are multiple universes,

  531. that's okay.

  532. He's Lord of all of them

  533. as well.

  534. He's the God

  535. of every dimension of life

  536. because He is the one true,

  537. uncreated, eternally glorious,

  538. sovereign God.

  539. He's the God

  540. of every facet of life,

  541. of all peoples,

  542. of all cultures,

  543. of all countries

  544. and circumstances.

  545. He's the God

  546. of all of life

  547. and all of our lives

  548. and therefore

  549. the God of every facet

  550. and part of our lives.

  551. He's not just the God

  552. we run to for salvation.

  553. He's the God

  554. who's Lord

  555. over Sundays,

  556. service,

  557. but He's also the God

  558. who's Lord

  559. over the Thursday afternoon

  560. board meeting.

  561. He's God

  562. of the prayer meeting

  563. on a Thursday night,

  564. but He's also God

  565. of your staff meeting

  566. on a Monday morning.

  567. He is Lord

  568. over creation

  569. and cosmos,

  570. but He's also Lord

  571. of our finances

  572. and our sexuality

  573. and our relationships

  574. and our relationships

  575. with our parents.

  576. He's the God

  577. of our longings

  578. and our fears

  579. and our anxieties

  580. and our worries.

  581. The Lord,

  582. your God,

  583. the Lord is one.

  584. God over every facet

  585. of life

  586. and therefore,

  587. He calls us

  588. for this undivided love

  589. and affection,

  590. this undivided devotion

  591. and loyalty,

  592. this worship

  593. and this trust.

  594. Hear, O Israel.

  595. Hear, people of God.

  596. The Lord, our God,

  597. Yahweh,

  598. the God of the Bible,

  599. is the one true God.

  600. Therefore,

  601. love Him

  602. with your heart,

  603. your soul,

  604. your mind,

  605. your strength,

  606. with every facet

  607. of our lives.

  608. In some senses,

  609. as Israel

  610. stands on the verge

  611. of going into

  612. this new season

  613. in the nation,

  614. the life of Israel,

  615. God is actually

  616. not doing anything

  617. very new

  618. and original.

  619. Sometimes,

  620. Claire and I

  621. laugh to one another

  622. because,

  623. I don't know if you

  624. ever hear this,

  625. but we often hear

  626. people saying,

  627. you know,

  628. God,

  629. He's doing a new thing

  630. in the world.

  631. I really just sense

  632. God's doing something

  633. new in the world.

  634. And we often laugh

  635. and say,

  636. no,

  637. He's not really.

  638. He's actually doing

  639. the same thing

  640. He's been doing

  641. for millennia.

  642. God,

  643. by His grace,

  644. is saving sinners

  645. and redeeming

  646. and rescuing

  647. those who need Him.

  648. And He's calling

  649. all people

  650. to love Him

  651. with all their heart,

  652. soul,

  653. mind,

  654. and strength.

  655. God,

  656. He's not really

  657. doing all that much

  658. new.

  659. He's doing the same

  660. thing He's always done.

  661. Here,

  662. oh,

  663. watermark,

  664. as the restrictions

  665. lift,

  666. as we go back

  667. to school

  668. and university,

  669. as life,

  670. we go into

  671. this new season,

  672. what does God

  673. want to say to us?

  674. Listen up.

  675. I've got something

  676. to say.

  677. I am the one

  678. true God.

  679. Love me with

  680. every facet

  681. and dimension

  682. of your life.

  683. Now,

  684. what does this

  685. actually mean?

  686. What are the

  687. implications of this?

  688. Why is this

  689. necessary and

  690. important for us?

  691. Well,

  692. let's look at this

  693. passage,

  694. and it's going to give us

  695. four things briefly

  696. why this is important

  697. for us.

  698. Look,

  699. firstly,

  700. the reason why this is

  701. important is for our

  702. own good.

  703. For our own good.

  704. Look at verse

  705. three with me.

  706. It wasn't read to us,

  707. but it's in the

  708. bulletin.

  709. God says,

  710. listen up,

  711. hear my commands,

  712. and make sure you

  713. obey them,

  714. you,

  715. your children,

  716. and your

  717. grandchildren,

  718. verse three,

  719. that your days

  720. may be long,

  721. that it may go

  722. well with you,

  723. that you may

  724. multiply greatly

  725. in the land

  726. that the Lord

  727. your God,

  728. the God of your

  729. fathers,

  730. has promised you,

  731. the land flowing

  732. with milk and honey.

  733. God actually says

  734. the same thing

  735. in verse 24.

  736. He says,

  737. In other words,

  738. why does God

  739. command us

  740. to love Him

  741. and treasure Him

  742. with all that we have?

  743. To trust Him

  744. above all things.

  745. Well,

  746. one of the reasons

  747. it is God's love

  748. that commands us

  749. to love Him.

  750. It's not His harshness,

  751. it's not His severity,

  752. it's certainly not

  753. God's insecurity

  754. because, you know,

  755. He needs some love

  756. and affirmation,

  757. and if we don't love Him,

  758. who's going to love Him?

  759. So He commands us

  760. to love Him.

  761. It's not His insecurity

  762. or His need

  763. for affirmation,

  764. it's because of

  765. our best interest,

  766. for our own sake.

  767. God,

  768. in His love,

  769. because He's designed

  770. the world

  771. and designed humanity

  772. to flourish

  773. and to be blessed

  774. as we obey Him,

  775. God calls us

  776. for our own good

  777. because God calls us

  778. to be fully human.

  779. There's a pastor

  780. by the name of N.T. Wright.

  781. I'm sure you've heard of him.

  782. He's a very famous

  783. British pastor.

  784. He's still alive

  785. and he writes this.

  786. Listen to what he says.

  787. He says,

  788. what on earth

  789. are we here for anyway?

  790. I mean,

  791. why are we here

  792. as human beings?

  793. The fundamental answer

  794. is that what we are here for

  795. is to become genuine human beings,

  796. reflecting the God

  797. and whose image we made,

  798. and we're doing so

  799. on the one hand

  800. by worship

  801. and on the other hand

  802. through mission.

  803. We do this,

  804. not least of all,

  805. by following Jesus.

  806. And N.T. Wright goes on

  807. and he says,

  808. the way that this

  809. actually works out

  810. is not just by blindly

  811. following the rules.

  812. You don't become fully human

  813. by just doing what God says

  814. because that's what

  815. the pastor tells me.

  816. Actually,

  817. as we give our lives to God

  818. and say,

  819. God,

  820. I'm going to trust you.

  821. With this area of my life

  822. that's so hard,

  823. I'm going to trust you.

  824. What happens is that

  825. God actually starts to change us

  826. and transform us

  827. from the inside

  828. so that our hearts

  829. correspond with

  830. what is really true.

  831. So that what happens

  832. is you do start to

  833. follow your own heart

  834. or become authentic,

  835. right?

  836. We all want to become authentic

  837. in this day and age.

  838. So you can actually become

  839. your authentic self.

  840. You can follow your heart.

  841. But at the same time,

  842. you will also

  843. do what God commands

  844. because God's commands

  845. are written on our hearts.

  846. You see what he's saying?

  847. He's saying,

  848. God doesn't just call us

  849. to just be your authentic self,

  850. whatever your version

  851. of truth is.

  852. No, no, actually,

  853. there is a thing

  854. called truth.

  855. But as you follow Him,

  856. your truth,

  857. whatever that is,

  858. will correspond

  859. with what is actually true

  860. and you will be

  861. your most authentic self

  862. as you follow Him

  863. and you will do

  864. what God commands

  865. because your life

  866. will align

  867. with what is ultimate reality.

  868. What are we actually here for?

  869. We're here to become

  870. genuine human beings.

  871. And how do we do that?

  872. By saying,

  873. Christ,

  874. have your way

  875. in my life.

  876. But not only that,

  877. not only for our own sake,

  878. but also for the sake

  879. of the next generation.

  880. Look at verse 6 to 9 with me.

  881. Look at what Moses writes here.

  882. He says,

  883. These words that I command you

  884. shall be on your heart.

  885. You shall teach them diligently

  886. to your children.

  887. You shall talk about them

  888. when you sit in your house

  889. and when you walk by the way,

  890. when you lie down

  891. and when you rise.

  892. You shall write them

  893. on the doorposts of your house

  894. and on your gates.

  895. D.A. Carson very famously said,

  896. if you've been to Watermark,

  897. you've probably heard this quote.

  898. He says,

  899. One generation loves

  900. and treasures the gospel.

  901. The next generation

  902. just assumes the gospel.

  903. And the third generation

  904. denies the gospel.

  905. Most of us who are parents

  906. know that it doesn't matter

  907. what you tell your kids

  908. is most important.

  909. Our kids are going to grow up

  910. to love and treasure

  911. what is actually

  912. most important to us.

  913. Okay?

  914. So, men,

  915. those of us that are fathers here,

  916. you can tell your kids

  917. as much as you want

  918. to honor their mother,

  919. your wife, right?

  920. But if our kids see us

  921. actually treasuring other things,

  922. work or video games

  923. or ourselves,

  924. more than our wives,

  925. you can tell them

  926. as much as you want

  927. our kids are not going to grow up

  928. to honor and treasure

  929. their mother, right?

  930. Why?

  931. Because our kids don't do

  932. what we tell them to do.

  933. They do what they actually

  934. see us doing.

  935. Our kids are going to value

  936. what's most important to us,

  937. not what we tell them

  938. is most important to us, right?

  939. I remember our youngest daughter,

  940. Shiloh,

  941. when she went to kindergarten first,

  942. okay, here in Hong Kong.

  943. She's three years old

  944. and there's this boy

  945. in her class.

  946. We met him

  947. and all he could talk about

  948. was Liverpool.

  949. Okay, I know

  950. things are bad around here.

  951. The state of affairs

  952. are really bad.

  953. All he could talk about

  954. was Liverpool Football Club.

  955. And I was like,

  956. he's three years old, right?

  957. Well, anyway,

  958. he followed Shiloh

  959. and went from the same kindergarten

  960. to the same school.

  961. And so,

  962. even this year,

  963. when I see him

  964. on the way to school,

  965. say,

  966. hey, Lucas,

  967. how are you?

  968. And what is he talking about?

  969. Football, right?

  970. The Premier League

  971. and which managers

  972. have just been fired

  973. and which ones are coming in.

  974. And he's just talking

  975. all about football.

  976. And when I met his dad,

  977. what do you think

  978. his dad spoke about?

  979. Football, right?

  980. Football.

  981. That's all they could talk about.

  982. Now, I tried to convert them

  983. to a proper football club,

  984. but anyway,

  985. we're still working on that.

  986. But why?

  987. Parents,

  988. because our kids

  989. treasure what we treasure.

  990. Our kids love

  991. what we love.

  992. Friends,

  993. if we want our children

  994. and our kids

  995. to love the Lord Jesus Christ

  996. and to trust Him

  997. and to treasure Him

  998. above all things,

  999. in this world

  1000. of confusion and chaos

  1001. when there's so much

  1002. that's unknown,

1003. if we want to give our kids

  1004. rock-solid identity

1005. that they can stand firm

1006. in a world of sinking sand

  1007. and confusion,

1008. we can't just drop our kids

  1009. at church on Sunday

1010. or pray a quick prayer

1011. before they go to bed.

1012. We need to make sure

  1013. that we are loving

  1014. and treasuring

  1015. and delighting

  1016. and trusting

1017. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  1018. above all things,

  1019. that we love Him

  1020. heart, soul, mind,

  1021. and strength,

1022. that He is the most important

  1023. one in every facet

1024. and area of our lives

1025. so that what is glorious

  1026. and wonderful

  1027. and beautiful

  1028. about Christ to us

  1029. becomes wonderful

  1030. and glorious

  1031. and beautiful to them.

  1032. Now,

  1033. you may be here

  1034. and you may say,

  1035. okay, but I'm single

  1036. or I'm not married

1037. or maybe you are married

1038. but you don't have kids.

  1039. I don't, you know,

  1040. the next generation,

  1041. that's someone else's business.

  1042. Okay, but what about

  1043. the next generation

  1044. in Hong Kong?

1045. What about the next generation

  1046. in our church?

  1047. Maybe you don't have

  1048. biological kids

  1049. but friends,

  1050. our city,

  1051. the next generation

  1052. is awash with despair

  1053. and hopelessness

  1054. and there's a call on us

1055. even if you don't have

  1056. biological kids

  1057. to stand

1058. and to give the next generation

  1059. hope

1060. in the midst of all

  1061. the hopelessness

1062. in the midst of the despair

  1063. to say,

  1064. there is a God

  1065. and He's real

1066. and you can trust Him

  1067. and you can bank

  1068. your life on Him

  1069. and friends,

  1070. our church

  1071. is a young church.

1072. I know a lot of the students

  1073. are away now,

1074. they've all gone back home

  1075. but our church

  1076. is a young church

  1077. and this church

  1078. needs men and women

  1079. that are older,

1080. that have walked the life

  1081. to show us

  1082. what it looks like

  1083. to love and trust

  1084. and honor Christ

1085. in every area of our life

  1086. when you're 40

  1087. and you're 50

  1088. and you're 60

  1089. and you're 70.

1090. If you are 50 plus

  1091. here this morning,

  1092. maybe your kids

  1093. have grown up

1094. and are no longer at home,

  1095. this church needs you

1096. because we need to know

1097. and see what does it look like

1098. to still trust Christ supremely

  1099. when you're in your 50s

1100. and can I just say

  1101. if you're in your 40s,

  1102. I know your 40s

1103. are probably a crunch period

  1104. of life,

  1105. you know,

  1106. kids,

  1107. it's full on

1108. and work is full on,

1109. I'm going to get there soon,

  1110. I'm almost there,

  1111. please,

  1112. if you're 40 plus,

  1113. Oscar,

  1114. one or two others,

  1115. we need you

  1116. in this church

1117. because can I just say,

  1118. sorry,

  1119. I shouldn't have said that

1120. but can I just say,

  1121. okay,

  1122. listen up here,

1123. look me in the eye,

  1124. right,

  1125. when you're 20

  1126. and 25,

  1127. it's easy

  1128. to be radical

  1129. for Jesus,

1130. you've got so much time

  1131. on your hands,

  1132. you know,

  1133. you don't have

  1134. that many demands,

1135. I know it feels like

  1136. university is demanding

  1137. but it's not really,

  1138. okay,

  1139. and it is easy

1140. to be radical for Jesus

1141. and you go on mission trips

1142. and you lead a thousand CGs

  1143. and you're always serving

  1144. in a thousand ways

  1145. but when you're 40,

  1146. it's hard,

  1147. it's hard,

  1148. your boss is breathing

  1149. down your neck

  1150. and he's wanting you

  1151. to work,

  1152. you know,

  1153. 70 hours

1154. and you're not just graduated

  1155. but you're also not

  1156. top of the pile

1157. and so you're in that

  1158. middle management zone

  1159. and you've got kids

  1160. and you've got demands

1161. and you've got aging parents,

  1162. it's hard to love

  1163. and trust Jesus

1164. in every area of life.

  1165. Friends,

  1166. if you're in your 40s here,

1167. we need you to show us

1168. and to show the young people

  1169. in this church

  1170. what it looks like

  1171. to love God

1172. with all of your heart

1173. and all of your soul

1174. and all of your mind

1175. and all of your strength

  1176. because we need examples

1177. and so the next generation,

1178. not just our biological kids

  1179. but this city

  1180. and this church,

  1181. we need it,

  1182. okay,

1183. so for our own sake,

1184. for the sake of the next generation,

  1185. third reason,

  1186. this is quick,

  1187. because of the danger

  1188. of grace,

  1189. the danger of grace.

1190. Now I know that sounds blasphemous

1191. but look at verse 10

  1192. and 12 with me.

1193. What Moses is going to say here

  1194. is that God's blessings

  1195. apart from covenant relationship

  1196. with God

1197. are actually a dangerous thing.

  1198. Look at verse 10.

  1199. It says,

1200. when the Lord your God

1201. brings you into the land

1202. that He swore to your fathers

  1203. to give you

1204. with great and good cities

  1205. that you didn't build

1206. and houses full of good things

  1207. that you didn't fill

1208. and cisterns that you didn't dig

1209. and vineyards and olive trees

  1210. that you didn't plant

  1211. and when you eat

1212. and are full and satisfied,

  1213. then take care

  1214. lest you forget

  1215. the Lord your God

  1216. who brought you

1217. out of the land of Egypt,

1218. out of the house of slavery.

1219. What God is saying here

  1220. is that,

1221. oh let me say it this way,

1222. I know it sounds blasphemous

  1223. to talk about grace

  1224. as a dangerous thing

1225. because at the very heart

  1226. of Christianity

1227. and the heart of who God is

1228. is the fact that God relates to us

1229. on the basis of grace,

  1230. not what we earn

  1231. or our effort

  1232. or our good works.

  1233. It's God's grace.

1234. But the whole point of the Bible

1235. is that people are saved by grace

  1236. not by works.

1237. But look at this passage

  1238. that's saying to us,

1239. God in His incredible kindness to us

  1240. if that kindness,

1241. if the blessings of God

  1242. are untethered,

  1243. disconnected

1244. from covenant relationship to Him,

1245. those blessings actually have a way

1246. of becoming a snare to us,

  1247. of tripping us up

1248. because it's easy to fall more in love

  1249. with those blessings

1250. than the one who gives those blessings

  1251. in the first place.

1252. And so His very blessings

  1253. can actually destroy us.

1254. And so He says here

1255. that these things become more important

1256. and we get cut off

  1257. from the very one

1258. who gives those blessings to us.

  1259. Look at verse 11.

1260. When you eat and are full,

1261. take care lest you forget

  1262. the Lord your God.

  1263. In the Bible,

  1264. to forget God

1265. doesn't mean to have a lapse of memory.

  1266. It means God fades

  1267. into the background

  1268. and is no longer

  1269. in our consciousness.

1270. And so how do we stop

1271. the gifts of God's grace

1272. becoming a snare to us?

1273. How do we stop ourselves

  1274. loving God's kindnesses

  1275. more than God Himself?

  1276. Hear, O Israel.

  1277. The Lord is one.

1278. Love the Lord your God

1279. with every facet of your life,

  1280. all your heart, soul,

  1281. mind, and strength.

  1282. And that brings us

1283. to the last and the final point

  1284. is this.

1285. Because God loved us first.

1286. Look at verse 20 to 22 with me.

  1287. This is amazing.

  1288. It says,

1289. When your son or your daughter

1290. asks you in time to come,

  1291. what is the meaning

  1292. of the testimonies

  1293. and the commands

  1294. and the statutes?

1295. that the Lord God commanded us.

  1296. In other words,

1297. your son or your daughter

1298. comes to you and says,

1299. Why should we obey God?

  1300. I mean,

  1301. why should we do

  1302. all this stuff anyway?

1303. Then you shall say to your son,

1304. Well, Moses told us to.

  1305. I don't know.

1306. I'm just doing what Moses said.

  1307. Because Kevin the pastor

  1308. just told me to.

  1309. No, no, no.

1310. That's not what you say.

  1311. What you say is,

1312. We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt.

1313. And God brought us out of Egypt

  1314. by a mighty hand.

  1315. In other words,

1316. when your children come to you

  1317. and say,

1318. Why do we do these things?

1319. Why do we obey God?

1320. And why should we do

  1321. all these things?

  1322. You tell them.

1323. There was once upon a time.

  1324. You remind them

  1325. of the salvation

  1326. and the deliverance

1327. that God accomplished for you

1328. when they had no way

  1329. of saving themselves.

  1330. What's Moses saying here?

  1331. He's saying,

1332. You tell them the gospel.

  1333. Right?

  1334. You know,

  1335. in the Old Testament,

  1336. the story of God

  1337. saving His people

1338. out of slavery in Egypt

  1339. and bringing them

  1340. into freedom

1341. by the blood of the Lamb

  1342. is always a picture

  1343. of an analogy

  1344. of a signpost

  1345. to point them towards

  1346. the cross.

  1347. Right?

1348. The way that we were slaves

  1349. to sin and death

  1350. and darkness

  1351. and we were delivered

  1352. out of that slavery

  1353. and brought into freedom

  1354. by the blood

1355. of the true and better Lamb,

  1356. Jesus Christ.

  1357. In other words,

  1358. so when God says,

1359. Why should we do these things?

1360. Why do we honor God?

1361. Why do we obey God

1362. in every area of our life?

1363. Because once upon a time,

  1364. friends,

1365. you and I were slaves to sin.

  1366. Once upon a time,

  1367. we were unlovable

  1368. in our natural state.

  1369. We were unlovable

  1370. in our depravity.

1371. We were dead in our sin.

  1372. We were deservedly

  1373. objects of God's wrath.

  1374. But God,

  1375. in His supreme mercy,

  1376. in His unmerited grace,

1377. God poured out for us

  1378. riches and mercy

  1379. by sending His Son

  1380. to the cross,

1381. by dying in our place

1382. so that we could come

  1383. out of that place

  1384. and be reconciled

  1385. and be welcomed

  1386. into His family,

1387. that we could be set free

  1388. from bondage to sin

  1389. and live for God.

1390. Do you know that amazing verse

  1391. in 1 John?

  1392. It says this,

1393. In this the love of God

1394. was made manifest for us

1395. that God sent His Son

1396. to die that we might

  1397. live through Him.

  1398. This is love.

1399. Not that we love God first,

1400. but that He loved us

  1401. and sent His Son

1402. to be an atoning sacrifice

  1403. for us.

  1404. You see,

  1405. in Deuteronomy chapter 7,

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  1406. the very next chapter,

1407. God says to His people,

  1408. It's not because

1409. you were the biggest nation

1410. or the most powerful nation

  1411. that I rescued you.

  1412. In fact,

  1413. you were the smallest

1414. out of all the nations.

  1415. I rescued you

1416. simply because I loved you.

  1417. And chapter 8,

  1418. He says,

  1419. It's not because

1420. you were the wisest nation

1421. and had it all going for you.

  1422. No, no,

1423. you weren't very wise at all.

  1424. But I rescued you

  1425. simply because

1426. I set my love upon you.

  1427. And chapter 9,

  1428. He's going to say,

  1429. It's not because

1430. you were the most righteous nation.

  1431. No, no, no.

1432. You were just as unrighteous

  1433. as everyone else.

  1434. I chose you

  1435. and loved you

  1436. simply because

1437. I chose to love you.

  1438. So friends,

  1439. why do we love

  1440. the Lord Jesus Christ

1441. with all of our heart

  1442. and soul

  1443. and mind

  1444. and strength?

1445. Because when we were unlovable

  1446. and had nothing

  1447. to bring to God,

  1448. He loved us

  1449. by sending His Son

1450. to die on the cross.

  1451. And so friends,

1452. when our children say to us,

1453. why do we need to obey God

1454. and do what He asks?

1455. Why do we go to church on Sunday

  1456. rather than going to

  1457. soccer club

  1458. and rugby club

  1459. and tennis club?

1460. Why do we do family devotions

  1461. around the dinner table

1462. rather than just watching TV?

1463. Why do we take communion regularly

  1464. and ask God

1465. to forgive us of our sins?

  1466. The answer is

  1467. not because we're Christians

1468. and that's what Christians do.

  1469. The answer is

1470. you tell them the gospel.

  1471. You tell them that

  1472. once upon a time

  1473. I was God's enemy

  1474. worthy of hell

1475. but Jesus sent His love upon me

1476. and died on the cross

1477. so that I could be ransomed,

  1478. healed, restored, forgiven,

1479. that I could be brought

  1480. into His family.

  1481. God loved me

1482. so that now I can love Him.

  1483. And friends,

  1484. when your colleagues

  1485. or your workmates

  1486. or your school friends

  1487. or your university friends

  1488. say to you,

1489. why don't you just sleep

  1490. with your boyfriend

  1491. or your girlfriend?

  1492. If it feels right,

  1493. it must be right.

1494. Or why do you give a portion

1495. of your income to the church?

1496. I mean, that sounds crazy.

1497. Why would you do that?

1498. Or why not cheat on this test?

1499. Or why not just exaggerate

  1500. on your resume

  1501. and get that job?

  1502. The answer is not

  1503. because I'm a Christian

1504. and this is what Christians do.

  1505. The answer is

1506. because I once was lost

  1507. and hopeless

  1508. and worthy of hell.

  1509. And Jesus Christ

1510. set His love upon me

1511. and woke up my heart

1512. so that I can love Him.

  1513. Ransomed, healed,

  1514. restored, forgiven.

1515. Now because Jesus loves me,

  1516. I love Him

1517. with every facet of my life.

  1518. And friends,

  1519. when your own heart

  1520. questions you

  1521. and that voice

  1522. in your head says,

1523. why do you honor God?

  1524. Why don't you do

  1525. just what feels good?

  1526. Why don't you just

  1527. live for yourself?

1528. And when that voice comes

  1529. and says,

  1530. why don't you hold

  1531. on to that grudge

  1532. and just bear

1533. and not forgive that person

1534. that's treated you so badly?

  1535. The answer is not,

  1536. I'm a Christian,

  1537. I guess I better forgive them.

1538. You preach to your own heart

  1539. the gospel

  1540. that once you were

  1541. an enemy of God

  1542. and for no doing

  1543. of your own accord,

1544. God set His love upon you

1545. and He sent His Son

1546. to die on the cross

1547. so that you may be rescued,

  1548. ransomed, healed,

  1549. restored, forgiven,

1550. that you may love Him

1551. because with all of your life

  1552. because Jesus loved you

1553. with all of His life.

  1554. Friends, as we come

  1555. to this juncture,

1556. hear, O people of God,

  1557. the Lord our God,

  1558. the Lord is one.

1559. Let's love the Lord our God

1560. with all of our heart

1561. and all of our soul

1562. and all of our mind

1563. and all of our strength.

  1564. Let's take a few minutes

  1565. and respond

1566. and we're going to take communion

1567. in a few minutes' time

  1568. but I want to,

  1569. before we get there,

1570. I want to just give us

  1571. three minutes

  1572. just to sit quietly

  1573. and Nate,

1574. maybe you want to come

1575. and just play the keys for us

  1576. and let's just think,

  1577. what has God

1578. been saying to you today?

1579. And then what does it look like

  1580. to respond?

1581. Maybe you want to think

  1582. specifically,

1583. is there an area of life

1584. where I'm still holding on?

  1585. I've allowed Jesus

1586. to be Lord of this area

  1587. and this area

  1588. and this area

  1589. and this area

  1590. but there's one area

1591. that I don't want to let go.

  1592. Let's respond to God

  1593. this morning.
