  1. Father, your word leads us to talk about some very uncomfortable truths.

  2. And Father, you know how we have a great habit as human beings to ignore truths that are uncomfortable,

  3. to try to do some spin on them.

  4. And Father, you know how unpopular this text is for the average Canadian and even the average Canadian Christian.

  5. And you know, Father, how many Christians in Canada today struggle with some of these ideas and concepts

  6. and even use it as an excuse to walk away from the faith.

  7. Father, you know the state of our hearts.

  8. And we know that every word that you caused to be written in your word written was written for our health,

  9. for our salvation, for our healing, for our strengthening, for our good.

  10. And so, Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would fall with might and power and deep conviction upon us

  11. and upon all who are entering into worship through the video, through YouTube Live.

  12. We ask for the Holy Spirit would fall with might and power and deep conviction

  13. and that your word would do its work in our hearts.

  14. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. Some of you know that over the years I've had lots of conversations in coffee shops.

  17. Over the last 22 months I haven't had very many conversations in coffee shops, even recently.

  18. They're not really fully open. They're sort of open.

  19. Actually, mainly the few conversations I've had lately have almost all been with Muslims, actually,

  20. which is a very interesting development when they see me reading the Bible

  21. and they start into a bit of a conversation with me.

  22. But there's one fellow. I'm going to call him Bob.

  23. And if you're watching for a first time or you're a guest here for the first time,

  24. one of the things I try to do when I talk is if I'm using an example of a male,

  25. I just always try to use the word Bob so I don't slip and say the person's real name.

  26. And it's either usually Sue or Sally if it's a woman.

  27. So if you're here and your name is Bob, if I stopped using Bob when the person's real name was Bob,

  28. then you'd figure out that his real name was Bob, right?

  29. So it just has to always be Bob.

  30. So if you're a visitor, you're watching, your name is Bob.

  31. In fact, yeah, I'm not talking about you in this case, for sure.

  32. But ever, I'm not.

  33. But I've had one fellow that I think I had a failure in conversations with him.

  34. At the end of the day, only God knows.

  35. But I really, I spent months talking to this fellow, always misreading him in a very serious way.

  36. The person that he always sat with in the coffee shop was a very, very, very public atheist.

  37. And they always seemed to have very, very friendly conversations.

  38. And as I got to know this fellow Bob, I discovered that he was raised in an atheist household,

  39. that he got a PhD in one of the STEM fields, you know, science, technology, engineering, or medicine.

  40. He had a PhD in one of those STEM fields.

  41. He was raised in an atheist house.

  42. He had had a very, very high-profile job in the STEM field for 30-some-odd years.

  43. So I just kept talking to him, assuming that he was an atheist.

  44. And I actually, I kept missing what he was saying.

  45. And it must have really, it's like, maybe it's part of God's grace that even though I kept being clueless with him,

  46. that he kept talking to me.

  47. And I'd been talking to him for months before it finally dawned on me

  48. that with no help from Christians at all,

  49. he had come to the point where he completely and utterly rejected naturalistic evolution.

  50. And he believed that spiritual beings existed.

  51. And I had completely and utterly missed it.

  52. All these times we were talking, we were two ships passing in the night.

  53. I just, I just didn't listen.

  54. I guess I was just so overwhelmed by his background.

  55. And I'd never really come across somebody who all by themselves,

  56. completely and utterly separate from any interaction with Christians,

  57. had rejected naturalistic evolution completely

  58. and actually accepted that spiritual, that minds existed, spirits existed, angels,

  59. all those things, they all existed.

  60. Then we started to have very, very different conversations

  61. just before COVID hit and then he eventually moved to a different city.

  62. Actually, if you're watching, I, for some odd reason,

  63. I'd love to have a conversation with you again if you'd do me the honor and the pleasure.

  64. I mention all of this because the text that you, we just heard,

  65. and we're going to look at again in a moment,

  66. it makes very clear reference to Satan and to demons.

  67. And in Canada, basically there's two camps in Canada nowadays

  68. when it comes to things like this.

  69. There are a lot of people who completely and utterly reject anything like that

  70. as just being against reason, against science, against common sense.

  71. It's just kooky.

  72. Okay?

  73. And then the other camp, which might even now be the majority in Canada,

  74. is that they accept that these things exist.

  75. It's like a non-issue.

  76. Of course spiritual beings exist.

  77. Of course spells work.

  78. Of course crystals work.

  79. Of course there's a spiritual dimension to life.

  80. So I just want to say that, you know, over the weeks when we look at Mark's gospel,

  81. and we're going to go through all of it,

  82. we're going to take a break actually after this sermon

  83. to do more Christmas and Advent things

  84. and return to it in the second Sunday in January.

  85. We'll return to the series.

  86. But today I'm not going to do anything to try to convince those

  87. who don't think that demons exist.

  88. I will at some point in time,

  89. because it's going to come up again in other texts, I will.

  90. But for now, those of you who are watching, who are skeptical,

  91. just give us, just pretend it's, just listen to us as you would

  92. an anthropologist trying to figure out, like, weird people groups.

  93. But for the rest of you Canadians who accept that such things exist,

  94. just to let you know that there's, in a sense, there's two camps in Canada,

  95. but biblical Christianity, real Christianity,

  96. is on the side of the conversation that believes that minds exist

  97. and spirits exist, spiritual beings exist.

  98. We disagree with most Canadians,

  99. because most Canadians who are in this camp

  100. think that this world is either inherently good or neutral,

  101. and we Christians disagree with that.

  102. The Bible tells that that is a wrong way to understand it.

  103. But here is a text where you see that Jesus obviously believes

  104. in the existence of Satan and demons

  105. and Christians who trust him as their Savior and Lord

  106. should also believe the same as well.

  107. Now, I just mention that because it's in the context

  108. of talking about Satan and demons

  109. that these two very, very, very unpopular Canadian ideas,

  110. one of them is more of a Christian issue,

  111. and the other aspect is just a Christian and secular issue,

  112. is that it's in this context that Jesus is going to talk about

  113. an unforgivable sin.

  114. At least that's how it's often put.

  115. And as part of the way he talks about that

  116. and deals with some of these issues,

  117. he also, in a sense, he never uses the word hell,

  118. but he creates part of the, in a sense,

  119. the theological and spiritual superstructure

  120. and theology within which hell would be understood.

  121. So let's look at the text.

  122. Mark chapter 3, verses 20 to 35.

    Mark 3:20–35

  123. We're preaching through the gospel of Mark.

  124. And by the way, if you're here or if you're watching

  125. and you're either a skeptic or a scoffer or a seeker,

  126. we don't hide things about the Christian life.

  127. That's one of the reasons why we preach through books of the Bible.

  128. And if you go through all of Mark's gospel,

  129. we're going to have to talk about sexuality.

  130. We're going to talk about identity.

  131. We're going to have to talk about money.

  132. We're going to talk about hell.

  133. All sorts of things because we go through from verse to verse

  134. and so nothing's hidden.

  135. Here's how the text goes.

  136. Verse 20.

  137. Then Jesus went home.

  138. By the way, this would be his,

  139. the last couple of years of his life,

  140. he had a home.

  141. Not probably that he owned,

  142. but that he stayed with in the Capernaum area.

  143. That's sort of where his home base was for ministry during his public ministry.

  144. So verse 20.

  145. Then he went home and the crowd gathered again

  146. so that they could not even eat.

  147. That is the Jesus and his disciples and the people who lived in the home.

  148. And when his family,

  149. and in the original language,

  150. it implies not just family,

  151. but people who were close to him.

  152. So when his family,

  153. in a sense,

  154. and many of his friends heard it,

  155. that that's where he was,

  156. they went out to seize him,

  157. for they were saying,

  158. he is out of his mind.

  159. And actually, literally,

  160. the word literally is the one that's used to get the word berserk.

  161. He's berserk.

  162. Completely crazy.

  163. Raving.

  164. Mad.

  165. Now,

  166. just a little bit of an aside.

  167. I'm not going to say much about this

  168. in terms of the sermon.

  169. I just don't have time.

  170. It would be a whole interesting sermon in and of itself.

  171. But the thing to note here is that people at this time understood the difference between mental illness and demon possession.

  172. They didn't just say automatically that if somebody seemed to be exhibiting weird,

  173. you know,

  174. hearing voices or all those other mood swings,

  175. the things that we would identify as mental illness.

  176. They didn't just assume it was demonic.

  177. They had two categories.

  178. And in fact,

  179. you'll see that very clearly in the text,

  180. because here in this first text,

  181. they use what we would now call a psychological category,

  182. that he's mentally ill.

  183. And we're going to see that in the very next few verses,

  184. they use a demonic category.

  185. So,

  186. it's not,

  187. we can be really guilty of chronological snobbery

  188. and just think that because we know how to set,

  189. get a TikTok account,

  190. that somehow we're smarter than people who didn't have flush toilets.

  191. It's not the case.

  192. You read all writers,

  193. they were very smart,

  194. very perceptive.

  195. And in this day,

  196. they had this distinction,

  197. which we've lost.

  198. And then now the text goes in a very,

  199. very bit of a different direction,

  200. although it helps us to see that they do understand the distinction between mental illness and demonic oppression or possession.

  201. Verse 22,

  202. and the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying,

  203. he is possessed by Beelzebul.

  204. And by the prince of demons,

  205. he casts out the demons.

  206. And just sort of pause here for a second.

  207. I haven't really talked about it very much,

  208. but when you see the word scribes here,

  209. especially scribes from Jerusalem,

  210. this would really be like,

  211. a scribe was sort of a cross between somebody with a PhD,

  212. somebody who was a lawyer,

  213. somebody who was a public intellectual,

  214. somebody who was a judge,

  215. and someone who was a community leader.

  216. So it would be as if,

  217. almost as if,

  218. not quite,

  219. but almost as if Mayor Watson was also a lawyer,

  220. and also had a doctorate,

  221. and also had,

  222. like,

  223. was a public intellectual.

  224. And they're all rolled into one.

  225. And when it says that they come from Jerusalem,

  226. what this means is the elite have come.

  227. So in our case,

  228. it would be that somebody with a PhD from Cambridge,

  229. or Oxford,

  230. or Harvard,

  231. you know,

  232. who writes for elite journals,

  233. and elite media,

  234. and is also a lawyer and a judge,

  235. that's who's come.

  236. Like,

  237. this is a top-notch guy,

  238. has come from the center

  239. of the Jewish intellectual,

  240. spiritual,

  241. and cultural world.

  242. So a scribe is at the pinnacle of the intellectual,

  243. the cultural,

  244. the,

  245. you know,

  246. the biblical,

  247. and even in many ways,

  248. often because of their consultancy role,

  249. at the very height of politics,

  250. all blended in a way that doesn't exist anymore.

  251. And so they've come down from Jerusalem,

  252. and they say that Jesus is possessed.

  253. So the interesting thing,

  254. by the way,

  255. is that what this means is,

  256. they accept,

  257. they realize,

  258. they can't deny that Jesus has been doing miracles.

  259. His fame,

  260. if you look,

  261. you read the other part of the gospel before this,

  262. the way the gospel writers work,

  263. is they record a couple of significant incidents,

  264. that involve a miracle,

  265. or a healing,

  266. or an exorcism,

  267. but they also regularly tell you,

  268. that he did this all the time.

  269. And if you go back,

  270. there's been a couple of summary statements earlier,

  271. that basically just say,

  272. you know,

  273. Jesus is doing this all the time,

  274. all the time,

  275. all the time,

  276. all the time.

  277. We're just recording a couple of them.

  278. And in fact,

  279. in the text that we looked at,

  280. either last week or the week before,

  281. it just said that one of the reasons,

  282. that's one of the reasons why Jesus's fame,

  283. without social media,

  284. had spread so far,

  285. even into areas that were majority pagan,

  286. and mixed pagan Jewish areas,

  287. and the Jewish homeland,

  288. and the center of the Jewish homeland,

  289. the fact that he was doing these things,

  290. had become very well known.

  291. So the scribes,

  292. these cultural elite,

  293. they come,

  294. and they accept,

  295. that he's been doing exorcisms,

  296. and miracles,

  297. and healing,

  298. but they saw this,

  299. as evidence of something,

  300. very opposite,

  301. of what Jesus was interpreting it as.

  302. In fact,

  303. they say,

  304. that the fact that he's able to do this,

  305. is because of Satan,

  306. which we'll see in a moment,

  307. Beelzebul,

  308. Satan,

  309. sort of a common name.

  310. So the,

  311. if you think of the,

  312. demonic world,

  313. C.S. Lewis wouldn't say,

  314. that it was a hierarchy,

  315. if you read the screw tape letters,

  316. and if you haven't read,

  317. the screw tape letters,

  318. read the screw tape letters,

  319. at the bottom of the lower archy,

  320. or the height of the hierarchy,

  321. but a demon,

  322. that has more power,

  323. and influence,

  324. than other demons,

  325. and that Jesus is possessed,

  326. by this very,

  327. very high level,

  328. demon,

  329. or from God's perspective,

  330. a low level,

  331. demon,

  332. and that's why Jesus,

  333. is able to do this.

  334. So how does Jesus respond?

  335. Well here's how he does it.

  336. Look at verses,

  337. I'm going to read all of 23 to 30,

  338. and then we're going to circle back,

  339. and sort of unpack it.

  340. So they make this claim,

  341. against Jesus in public.

  342. So verse 23,

  343. Jesus called to them,

  344. and to him,

  345. he called them to him,

  346. and said to them in parables.

  347. Now he's answering this question,

  348. in public.

  349. How can Satan,

  350. verse 23,

  351. he called them to him,

  352. and said to them in parables,

  353. how can Satan cast out Satan?

  354. If a kingdom is divided,

  355. against itself,

  356. that kingdom cannot stand.

  357. And if a house is divided,

  358. against itself,

  359. that house,

  360. will not be able to stand.

  361. And if Satan,

  362. has risen up against himself,

  363. and is divided,

  364. he cannot stand,

  365. but is coming to an end.

  366. But no one,

  367. right,

  368. so now that is in a sense,

  369. he's given a bit of set of some arguments,

  370. about why it can't be Satan.

  371. Now he's going to challenge them,

  372. to understand how they should be,

  373. interpreting it in a different way.

  374. But,

  375. no one can enter a strong man's house,

  376. and plunder his goods,

  377. unless he first binds the strong man.

  378. Then indeed,

  379. he may plunder his house.

  380. And now it takes this,

  381. sort of very deeper turn,

  382. about the significance,

  383. of being closed to this truth.

  384. Truly,

  385. and by the way,

  386. those of you who remember,

  387. the King James Version,

  388. that would be verily.

  389. This,

  390. we could almost translate it as,

  391. Amen.

  392. And it means,

  393. whenever you see this,

  394. it's used about,

  395. I think,

  396. ten times or something in Mark.

  397. It means that God,

  398. Jesus is making a very solemn statement.

  399. Amen.

  400. Rather than us say,

  401. at the end of a prayer,

  402. Amen.

  403. Catches your attention.

  404. I say to you,

  405. all sins will be forgiven,

  406. the children of man,

  407. and whatever blasphemies they utter,

  408. literally in the Greek it says,

  409. whatever blasphemies they blaspheme,

  410. but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit,

  411. never has forgiveness,

  412. but is guilty of an eternal sin,

  413. for they were saying,

  414. he has an unclean spirit.

  415. So,

  416. whoa,

  417. that's heavy.

  418. What's going on?

  419. Well,

  420. here's a couple of things.

  421. Part of what Jesus is saying is,

  422. here's how your argument works.

  423. Okay?

  424. When you're trying to interpret what I'm doing,

  425. we'll use the example of Martin Luther King,

  426. Jr.,

  427. and his great action in the 60s

  428. to begin to break down segregation,

  429. to really begin to challenge at a very,

  430. very deep level.

  431. It was a cultural turning point,

  432. the United States,

  433. the great work of Martin Luther King,

  434. Jr.

  435. and if somebody said to you,

  436. Martin Luther King,

  437. Jr.,

  438. in all his works,

  439. he was actually working for the Klan,

  440. the Ku Klux Klan.

  441. You know those things,

  442. and I don't want to put an image,

  443. because it would just,

  444. it would,

  445. it would,

  446. it would,

  447. it would defile our room

  448. to put up an image

  449. of the Ku Klux Klan.

  450. Those evil men robed in white

  451. with the white hoods,

  452. cowards,

  453. covering their faces,

  454. the burning crosses.

  455. So imagine somebody said,

  456. you know Martin Luther King,

  457. he was actually working

  458. for the Ku Klux Klan,

  459. and you'd go,

  460. what?

  461. What?

  462. They'd say,

  463. yeah, yeah, yeah,

  464. all that stuff,

  465. the demonstrations with the cops,

  466. and, you know,

  467. the bus boycotts,

  468. and breaking down segregation,

  469. and opening places up,

  470. they were actually working for the Klan,

  471. and you'd go,

  472. what?

  473. Like,

  474. how could you possibly look

  475. at Martin Luther King

  476. and say that he was working

  477. for the Klan?

  478. But actually,

  479. it would even be worse

  480. if it went the other way.

  481. If somebody said,

  482. yeah, yeah,

  483. Martin Luther King,

  484. I've just been doing a lot

  485. of reading about him,

  486. I've really been doing

  487. lots and lots of research

  488. about him,

  489. and do you know

  490. that Martin Luther King

  491. ran the Ku Klux Klan?

  492. And you'd go,

  493. you'd laugh,

  494. like I just did,

  495. you'd giggle.

  496. And then they said,

  497. no, no, no, no,

  498. I've been studying it.

  499. Like,

  500. I've been looking

  501. at archival footage,

  502. and I've been reading

  503. interviews,

  504. and Martin Luther King

  505. ran the Ku Klux Klan.

  506. Now,

  507. you'd start to realize,

  508. what?

  509. Like,

  510. okay,

  511. how do you have

  512. a conversation

  513. with somebody like this?

  514. Like,

  515. how can anybody

  516. in their right mind

  517. possibly think

  518. that Martin Luther King

  519. organized the people

  520. in the white hoods

  521. to go around

  522. and lynch

  523. black people?

  524. And, like,

  525. wouldn't that be a,

  526. like,

  527. wouldn't it almost

  528. make you want to gag

  529. and vomit

  530. that it's such a

  531. perversion

  532. of the truth

  533. and such a slander

  534. against a very,

  535. very,

  536. very great man?

  537. Like,

  538. and you might try

  539. to say to them,

  540. no,

  541. no,

  542. no,

  543. no,

  544. no,

  545. no,

  546. no,

  547. like,

  548. Martin Luther King

  549. did things

  550. to stop black people

  551. from being African Americans

  552. from being lynched.

  553. Yeah,

  554. yeah,

  555. yeah,

  556. yeah,

  557. no,

  558. it was all part

  559. of a Ku Klux Klan.

  560. No,

  561. no,

  562. no,

  563. no,

  564. like,

  565. you,

  566. and that's what

  567. Jesus is saying

  568. here is going on

  569. with these scribes

  570. and the scribes.

  571. He's saying,

  572. like,

  573. like,

  574. one moment,

  575. like,

  576. if you know mentally ill people,

  577. imagine,

  578. you know,

  579. some of the,

  580. those of you who are downtown a fair bit

  581. and you see these regular mentally ill people,

  582. there's this really,

  583. like,

  584. I see so many sad cases

  585. of mentally ill people

  586. on the streets of Ottawa

  587. that are off their meds

  588. and,

  589. and you just see them gaunt,

  590. raving,

  591. waving their arms

  592. as they wander down the street

  593. with the sores all over their body,

  594. huddled in,

  595. in little corners,

  596. talking to non-existent people

  597. and if somebody healed them

  598. that all of a sudden

  599. they were in their right mind,

  600. how could you possibly think

  601. that that was the devil doing it?

  602. Like,

  603. how could you,

  604. if you saw somebody on the street

  605. and their arm

  606. was all bent

  607. and when you saw them,

  608. you know,

  609. their sleeves came up

  610. and there was basically no flesh on it

  611. and they'd lost all control

  612. of their fingers

  613. and then,

  614. like,

  615. a day later,

  616. you saw that their arm

  617. was straight,

  618. there was muscle on the arm

  619. and their fingers were moving

  620. and you said the devil do that,

  621. you say,

  622. what?

  623. That's not the sort of thing

  624. the devil does.

  625. You see,

  626. what the,

  627. what,

  628. what Jesus is pointing out here,

  629. like,

  630. look,

  631. look again at verses,

  632. 28,

  633. see,

  634. look again at verse 27,

  635. but no one can enter

  636. a strong man's house

  637. and plunder his goods

  638. unless he first finds

  639. the strong man,

  640. then indeed he may plunder his house.

  641. Jesus is saying

  642. that if you actually look

  643. at the evidence,

  644. what you see

  645. is the strong man of death

  646. is being,

  647. is being bound.

  648. That's why people

  649. are being healed.

  650. You are seeing

  651. the strong man

  652. of mental illness

  653. being bound

  654. and that's why people

  655. are being put

  656. in their right mind.

  657. You see the strong man

  658. of demonic possession

  659. being bound

  660. by someone

  661. stronger still

  662. and that stronger one

  663. is obviously of God

  664. because it brings life,

  665. it brings clarity

  666. of mind,

  667. it brings healing,

  668. it brings

  669. a putting away

  670. of death

  671. and you're going to see

  672. other nature miracles

  673. later on

  674. as it goes on

  675. and that what you're seeing

  676. is not

  677. demonic,

  678. but what you see

  679. is that it's possible

  680. to close yourself

  681. to the truth,

  682. so close yourself

  683. to the truth

  684. that no truth

  685. can penetrate

  686. your mind.

  687. Some of you

  688. have probably heard

  689. the old joke,

  690. there's a doctor

  691. dealing with a patient

  692. and then one day

  693. he comes

  694. because he's troubling

  695. all of his family,

  696. it's a psychiatrist,

  697. and because he believes

  698. he's dead

  699. and so,

  700. like how do you tell

  701. a live person

  702. that they're not dead

  703. and so then

  704. they have conversations

  705. about it,

  706. they try medication

  707. and all of that

  708. type of stuff

  709. and every time

  710. he comes up

  711. with something

  712. about well you do this

  713. and dead men do this,

  714. he always has

  715. some type of explanation

  716. as to why it really

  717. just proves

  718. that he's dead,

  719. not alive.

  720. Anyway,

  721. finally one day

  722. the fellow comes in

  723. and he happens

  724. to mention

  725. he'd just been

  726. watching a movie

  727. and murder

  728. and he noticed

  729. that one of the things

  730. which is very telling

  731. is that dead men

  732. don't bleed

  733. and the psychiatrist

  734. goes ah,

  735. maybe this will work.

  736. He's come to the conclusion

  737. that dead men

  738. don't bleed.

  739. So he said

  740. you understand

  741. that dead men

  742. don't bleed,

  743. right?

  744. And the guy says

  745. absolutely

  746. so you can put out

  747. your hand

  748. he cuts him

  749. and he cuts him

  750. here on the arm

  751. and blood comes out

  752. and the man goes

  753. whoa,

  754. doctor,

  755. thank you so much.

  756. You've shown to me

  757. that dead men

  758. do bleed.

  759. Sorry,

  760. it wasn't very funny.

  761. Sorry,

  762. anyway,

  763. it's so possible

  764. to be closed

  765. to the truth

  766. that you just,

  767. and you know

  768. we see this in life

  769. if you think about it

  770. for a second.

  771. How many people,

  772. maybe it's been

  773. some of you

  774. in the room here

  775. that have had

  776. a problem

  777. with a teacher

  778. or a boss

  779. or a coach

  780. or a parent

  781. and for some reason

  782. the teacher

  783. just turns against you.

  784. They put you

  785. in a certain category,

  786. a bad category

  787. and then it doesn't matter

  788. what you do.

  789. If you do an act

  790. of kindness,

  791. it's manipulation.

  792. If you accept responsibility,

  793. you know,

  794. they come up

  795. with some other bad,

  796. well of course

  797. you accept responsibility,

  798. of course you did

  799. that bad thing,

  800. we already knew

  801. you did bad things

  802. and no matter

  803. what you did,

  804. it always gets twisted

  805. by the person

  806. in a bad direction

  807. and we see that

  808. it's in movies,

  809. it's what happens

  810. with bullies,

  811. it's what can happen

  812. with parents,

  813. people will talk about

  814. that,

  815. you know,

  816. just something

  817. that Louise and I

  818. were watching

  819. the other night

  820. and it was this kid

  821. talking about

  822. how his dad

  823. tried to kill him

  824. when he was 12,

  825. how his dad

  826. was an evil man

  827. and nothing he did

  828. could ever convince

  829. the dad

  830. that the kid

  831. had any worth,

  832. that he was any good,

  833. everything would be

  834. twisted in an evil way

  835. and what Jesus

  836. is warning us about

  837. is that there is

  838. a way for us

  839. as human beings

  840. to be like that

  841. with God,

  842. to be like that

  843. with God.

  844. Now why does this matter?

  845. Obviously it can matter

  846. to a kid

  847. to have a parent

  848. like that

  849. that nothing you do

  850. will ever show

  851. that parent

  852. that there's something

  853. good about you

  854. or that you've moved

  855. in a good direction,

  856. that their mind

  857. is completely

  858. and utterly

  859. closed against you.

  860. But why does it matter?

  861. Look at verses 28 to 30.

  862. Truly,

  863. remember,

  864. amen,

  865. I say to you,

  866. all sins will be forgiven

  867. the children of man

  868. and whatever blasphemies

  869. they utter,

  870. but whoever blasphemes

  871. against the Holy Spirit

  872. never has forgiveness

  873. but is guilty

  874. of an eternal sin

  875. for they were saying

  876. he has

  877. an unclean spirit.

  878. Now we get troubled

  879. with the last part

  880. but not realize

  881. how amazing

  882. the first part is.

  883. What the Bible

  884. is saying here

  885. is that there's

  886. a watershed,

  887. a potential watershed

  888. in a person's life.

  889. Many of you know

  890. if you come here

  891. I really love

  892. the analogy

  893. of the watershed.

  894. If you're driving

  895. along the Trans-Canada

  896. at some point in time,

  897. I think it's between

  898. North Bay and Sudbury,

  899. there's a sign

  900. on the side of the road

  901. from here on in

  902. that all the water

  903. you see is flowing

  904. to the Arctic.

  905. Before this point

  906. it's all flowing south

  907. but from here on in

  908. it's a watershed.

  909. Everything is flowing

  910. in the direction

  911. it's flowing north.

  912. It's flowing towards

  913. Hudson's Bay

  914. or the Arctic.

  915. And what Jesus

  916. is saying here

  917. is that there's

  918. a watershed moment

  919. will come in your life

  920. and on one side

  921. of that watershed

  922. is eternal forgiveness.

  923. The flow of your life,

  924. the flow of the waters

  925. of your life

  926. are immersed

  927. in eternal forgiveness

  928. that you've been forgiven

  929. and you flow

  930. towards a forgiveness

  931. that will go on

  932. into all eternity.

  933. and on the other side

  934. of that watershed

  935. sorry for you folks here

  936. I'll try to reverse it

  937. later on.

  938. You're not bad guys

  939. okay on this side

  940. but the other side

  941. of the watershed

  942. is that

  943. you will never

  944. have forgiveness.

  945. The sin that is

  946. in your life

  947. is a sin

  948. that not only

  949. has begun

  950. in this side

  951. of the grave

  952. but continues.

  953. That direction

  954. the flow

  955. will continue

  956. into all eternity.

  957. And you see

  958. what Jesus

  959. is doing here

  960. is he's preparing us

  961. to understand

  962. what's going to happen

  963. to him

  964. at the end

  965. of the gospel.

  966. That his death

  967. is not just

  968. a mere death

  969. but his death

  970. is that

  971. which creates

  972. a watershed.

  973. That you can come

  974. to a point

  975. in time

  976. in your life

  977. where you receive

  978. what Jesus

  979. has done for you

  980. by his death

  981. upon the cross

  982. and that when you

  983. receive it

  984. what you've received

  985. is eternal forgiveness

  986. and the crossing

  987. over of a watershed

  988. that the flow

  989. of your life

  990. is now

  991. in forgiveness

  992. to forgiveness

  993. for every single

  994. thing that has

  995. ever been done

  996. or you ever

  997. will do.

  998. he's not saying

  999. that if you

  1000. happen to let slip

  1001. a stupid thing

  1002. about the Holy Spirit

  1003. you're going to go

  1004. to hell forever.

  1005. You see

  1006. blasphemy

  1007. is

  1008. like

  1009. couldn't you

  1010. blasphemy

  1011. is slander

  1012. blasphemy

  1013. is believing

  1014. lies

  1015. blasphemy

  1016. is believing

  1017. not just

  1018. lies about a person

  1019. but terrible

  1020. offensive lies

1021. just as if I was

  1022. to try to argue

  1023. to you

  1024. that Martin Luther

  1025. King ran

  1026. the Ku Klux Klan

  1027. I mean

  1028. just imagine

  1029. if I tweeted

  1030. that without

  1031. any context

  1032. I'd break

  1033. Twitter

  1034. I would break

  1035. Twitter

  1036. and I should

  1037. by the way

  1038. it would be

  1039. an evil thing

  1040. and so the reason

  1041. that Jesus

  1042. mentions the Holy

  1043. Spirit

  1044. is to under

  1045. because it

  1046. partly

  1047. it's not here

  1048. in the text

  1049. it's part of

  1050. the bigger

  1051. picture of the

  1052. Bible

  1053. that all of

  1054. the Trinity

  1055. is involved

  1056. in a person

  1057. becoming a

  1058. Christian

  1059. in redemption

  1060. the Father

  1061. sends the Son

  1062. the Son

  1063. dies as the Lamb

  1064. of God

  1065. who takes away

1066. the sin of the world

  1067. and the Holy Spirit

  1068. is God

  1069. who brings you

  1070. to a saving

  1071. faith and knowledge

  1072. of Jesus

  1073. all of the Holy

  1074. all of the Trinity

  1075. is involved

  1076. in your salvation

  1077. and mine

1078. it was the Holy Spirit

  1079. that led you

  1080. to Jesus

1081. it was the Holy Spirit

  1082. that led you

  1083. to accept him

  1084. as your Savior

  1085. and your Lord

  1086. it is not

  1087. your doing

  1088. it is nothing

  1089. that you can

  1090. pat yourself

  1091. on the back

  1092. for

  1093. it is not

  1094. because you

  1095. are so clever

  1096. so winsome

  1097. so cute

  1098. so charming

  1099. it's the work

  1100. of the Holy Spirit

  1101. and so to deny

  1102. the work

  1103. of the Holy Spirit

  1104. and to say

  1105. that the work

  1106. of the Holy Spirit

  1107. in miracles

  1108. in the person

  1109. of Jesus

  1110. and to be so

  1111. completely

  1112. and utterly

  1113. close to the truth

  1114. you are being

  1115. towards God

  1116. exactly like

  1117. that parent

  1118. or coach

  1119. who completely

  1120. and utterly

  1121. sees the child

  1122. as an evil child

  1123. a bad child

  1124. and no amount

  1125. of action

  1126. and no amount

  1127. of truth

  1128. will break through

  1129. the hardness

  1130. of their heart

  1131. and the Bible

  1132. says that even

  1133. if you are a

  1134. Kanata soccer mom

  1135. and you're really

  1136. really pleasant

  1137. or you live

  1138. in Rockcliffe

  1139. or you live

  1140. in a rich section

  1141. of Manitik

1142. or out in West Carleton

  1143. or you're a hockey star

  1144. or you're a PhD

  1145. from Harvard

  1146. or a D Phil

  1147. from Oxford

1148. or you are the head

1149. of the Globe and Mail

  1150. or whatever it is

1151. if there is in fact

  1152. a possibility

  1153. for you

  1154. to be completely

  1155. and utterly

  1156. so close to God

  1157. that nothing

  1158. can penetrate that

  1159. see the other thing

  1160. about this

  1161. is that sin

  1162. is not puny

  1163. sin

  1164. is not puny

  1165. God is infinite

  1166. you are finite

  1167. when you

  1168. as a finite being

  1169. do something

  1170. that separates you

  1171. from the infinite God

  1172. you have created

  1173. an infinite distance

  1174. between you

  1175. and God

  1176. and so only

  1177. an infinite

  1178. sacrifice

  1179. can cover

  1180. the infinite distance

  1181. that you have created

  1182. between yourself

  1183. and God

  1184. only the infinite

  1185. can cross the distance

  1186. between the infinite

  1187. and the finite

  1188. and so this is

  1189. pointing very powerfully

  1190. towards who Jesus is

  1191. and what he accomplishes

1192. for you on the cross

1193. it is the infinite God

  1194. closing the infinite distance

  1195. between you

  1196. and God

  1197. and an infinite distance

  1198. which

  1199. I mean you can't

  1200. add to infinity

  1201. it's just infinity

  1202. but your whole life

  1203. is just part of

  1204. an infinite separation

  1205. from God

  1206. and God

  1207. in the first God

  1208. the son of God

  1209. closes that infinite distance

  1210. that no finite being

  1211. could ever cross

  1212. and he dies

  1213. a death

  1214. that covers

  1215. that infinite distance

  1216. and offers you

  1217. a fellowship

  1218. and a walk

  1219. with that infinite

  1220. eternal God

  1221. and when you accept

  1222. Christ as your savior

  1223. and know him

  1224. as your savior

  1225. and know him

  1226. as your Lord

  1227. that eternal life

  1228. of forgiveness

  1229. begins

  1230. and carries on

  1231. into eternity

  1232. I think it was C.S. Lewis

1233. but it might have been

  1234. somebody else

  1235. who said

  1236. you see

  1237. if you're so completely

  1238. and utterly

  1239. closed to God

  1240. if you become

  1241. at a subtle level

  1242. like these scribes

  1243. who see these evidences

  1244. of the strong man

  1245. of God breaking

  1246. into our world

  1247. and they either just

  1248. you just dismiss them

  1249. as just being

  1250. so much nonsense

1251. you don't care about them

1252. you don't give a hoot for them

1253. you don't get mad about it

  1254. you just deny it

1255. you just close your mind

  1256. to it

  1257. you just say

  1258. yeah whatever

  1259. yeah whatever

  1260. I'm empathetic

  1261. but whatever it is

  1262. it closes you

  1263. to these things

  1264. and if that state

  1265. of your soul

  1266. continues into all eternity

  1267. then even if

  1268. in eternity

  1269. in the new heaven

  1270. and the new earth

  1271. you experience

  1272. the love of God

  1273. in a way

1274. that that love of God

  1275. could not be denied

1276. or could not be avoided

  1277. but you actually began

  1278. to experience

  1279. without any veil

  1280. the powerful goodness

  1281. and love of God

  1282. you would experience it

  1283. not as release

  1284. but as torment

  1285. you would experience

  1286. the warmth

1287. of the love of God

  1288. not as a warmth

  1289. which heals your bones

  1290. but as a fire

  1291. that burns

  1292. your bones

  1293. that it is possible

  1294. for a human being

  1295. to so become

  1296. close to God

  1297. and resent

  1298. the presence

  1299. and the demands

  1300. of God

  1301. that even his mercies

  1302. will be experienced

  1303. as torment

  1304. so some of you

  1305. might say

  1306. George

  1307. I mean that's all

  1308. very sobering

  1309. I mean I guess

  1310. what you're saying

  1311. is that the hell

  1312. is an uncomfortable

  1313. truth

  1314. and according to you

  1315. it's a truth

  1316. and so you shouldn't

1317. close your eyes to it

  1318. but think about it

  1319. but George

  1320. are you saying

  1321. that you sort of

  1322. somehow

  1323. are more open

  1324. to God

  1325. than I am

  1326. that you're more open

  1327. to truth about God

  1328. than I am

  1329. I mean frankly George

  1330. your poop smells

1331. just as bad as mine

  1332. and you're no better

  1333. than me

  1334. so I just

  1335. I even resent

  1336. the fact

  1337. that you would

  1338. think that

  1339. that's the problem

  1340. with Christians

  1341. they think that

  1342. and the other thing

  1343. George

  1344. you just listen

  1345. to what you're saying

  1346. I mean what you're saying

  1347. just defies

  1348. all the logic

  1349. of morality

  1350. and culture

  1351. and religion

  1352. and spirituality

  1353. and the good things

  1354. and things like

  1355. stoicism

  1356. like if you really

  1357. believe that

  1358. then why on earth

  1359. wouldn't you just

  1360. go ahead

  1361. and do whatever

  1362. you want

  1363. knowing you're

  1364. going to be forgiven

  1365. like George

  1366. what you've just said

  1367. is both

  1368. is both

  1369. personally

  1370. very offensive

  1371. and is morally

  1372. ridiculous

  1373. and those would be

  1374. good reactions

  1375. by the way

1376. and I'd have to say

  1377. well

  1378. I'm going to be

  1379. honest with you

  1380. yeah there's times

  1381. I think I'm a lot

  1382. better than other

  1383. people

  1384. but that's me

  1385. at my worst

  1386. not my best

  1387. there's

  1388. there's times

  1389. I do somehow

  1390. think I've just

  1391. figured these things

  1392. out and why don't

  1393. other people do it

  1394. but that's me

  1395. at my worst

  1396. not my best

  1397. that's me

  1398. forgetting the Bible

  1399. not being based

  1400. on the Bible

  1401. in a very

  1402. interesting way

  1403. Jesus sort of

  1404. addresses some of

  1405. these issues

  1406. in the very next

  1407. part or Mark

  1408. has Jesus

  1409. address this issue

  1410. in the very very

  1411. next bit that

  1412. comes

  1413. just part of it

  1414. one of the things

  1415. he doesn't

  1416. I'll talk about

  1417. that at the end

  1418. look at what

  1419. happens in

  1420. verses 31 to 35

  1421. and his mother

  1422. and brother

  1423. and his brothers

  1424. came and standing

  1425. outside they sent

  1426. to him and called

  1427. him and a crowd

  1428. was sitting around

  1429. him so they're

  1430. sitting around him

  1431. to listen to him

  1432. and they said to

  1433. him your mother

  1434. and your brothers

  1435. are outside

  1436. seeking you

  1437. and the implication

  1438. is that they're

  1439. sort of making

  1440. demands on Jesus

  1441. you're not just

  1442. saying oh where's

  1443. Jesus oh you've

  1444. seen Jesus

  1445. no no no

  1446. get Jesus here

  1447. okay we're outside

  1448. we're his mom

  1449. these are his

  1450. brothers

  1451. get Jesus

  1452. and tell him

  1453. to get his butt

  1454. out of that place

  1455. and come here

  1456. that's that's

  1457. what's going on

  1458. get his butt

  1459. out of there

  1460. come here

  1461. I'm his mom

  1462. these are his

  1463. brothers

  1464. tell him to come

  1465. and Jesus

  1466. answered them

  1467. that's the people

  1468. who passed it on

  1469. and he says

  1470. who are my mother

  1471. and my brothers

  1472. verse 34

  1473. and looking about

  1474. at those who

  1475. sat around him

  1476. he said

  1477. here are my

  1478. mother and my

  1479. brothers

  1480. verse 35

  1481. for whoever

  1482. does the will

  1483. of God

  1484. he is my

  1485. brother

  1486. she is my

  1487. or he is my

  1488. brother

  1489. she is my

  1490. sister

  1491. and my

  1492. mother

  1493. whoever does

  1494. the will

  1495. of God

  1496. now there's

  1497. a couple of

  1498. things here

  1499. which are going

  1500. on in this

  1501. text

  1502. the first thing

  1503. is here

  1504. that

  1505. you see

  1506. here's the

  1507. great thing

  1508. about this

  1509. Ted Lasso

  1510. if you've

  1511. watched that

  1512. one of the

  1513. things he

  1514. talks about

  1515. is that

  1516. sports players

  1517. have to be

  1518. like goldfish

  1519. because goldfish

  1520. only remember

  1521. things for

  1522. 10 seconds

  1523. and you know

  1524. that's probably

  1525. good advice

  1526. if you're in

  1527. sports to get

  1528. over things

  1529. but the

  1530. problem is

  1531. that human

  1532. beings

  1533. especially

  1534. Christians

  1535. but human

  1536. beings

  1537. we're like

  1538. goldfish

  1539. we very

  1540. very quickly

  1541. forget

  1542. and the

  1543. thing

  1544. that we

  1545. very

  1546. very

  1547. quickly

  1548. forget

  1549. is that

  1550. we forget

  1551. that what

  1552. had just

  1553. happened

  1554. what just

  1555. happened

  1556. well Jesus

  1557. just said

  1558. there is a

  1559. way

  1560. for you

  1561. to be

  1562. eternally

  1563. forgiven

  1564. the implication

  1565. is is that

  1566. the infinite

  1567. God has done

  1568. something that

  1569. a finite

  1570. human being

  1571. cannot do

  1572. to cross

  1573. the infinite

  1574. distance

  1575. between

  1576. God

  1577. and you

  1578. and he

  1579. has done

  1580. something

  1581. you cannot

  1582. possibly do

  1583. for yourself

  1584. he has died

  1585. for you

  1586. it is his

  1587. death that

  1588. covers everything

  1589. that you've

  1590. ever possibly

  1591. done

  1592. this is an

  1593. unbelievable

  1594. not unbelievable

  1595. hopefully you

  1596. believe it

  1597. this is a

  1598. a truth

  1599. of a profound

  1600. thing that

  1601. God has done

  1602. for you

  1603. and you

  1604. cannot do

  1605. for yourself

  1606. and then we

  1607. come here

  1608. and say

  1609. the will of

  1610. God

  1611. oh the will

  1612. of God

  1613. means I

  1614. have to be

  1615. good to

  1616. be right

  1617. with God

  1618. what

  1619. why are we

  1620. all goldfish

  1621. what does

  1622. the will of

  1623. God mean

  1624. listen to

  1625. Jesus and

  1626. do what he

  1627. says

  1628. believe that

  1629. he is the

  1630. Savior

  1631. in the Lord

  1632. and you

  1633. cannot save

  1634. yourself

  1635. what does

  1636. it mean

  1637. it means

  1638. that listen

  1639. I did

  1640. not become

  1641. a Christian

  1642. because I

  1643. am so

  1644. clever and

  1645. I could

  1646. follow all

  1647. the evidence

  1648. so well

  1649. God did

  1650. something for

  1651. me in the

  1652. person of

  1653. the Holy

  1654. Spirit that

  1655. I could

  1656. not do

  1657. for myself

  1658. the Bible

  1659. says that

  1660. when we

  1661. appear before

  1662. the judgment

  1663. seat of

  1664. God

  1665. no one

  1666. will have

  1667. an excuse

  1668. no one

  1669. will be

  1670. able to

  1671. say that

  1672. God

  1673. didn't do

  1674. things in

  1675. their life

  1676. in such a

  1677. way that

  1678. they did

  1679. not have

  1680. moments of

  1681. freedom and

  1682. clarity where

  1683. they could

  1684. not have

  1685. responded to

  1686. the gospel

  1687. that's what

  1688. Romans 1

  1689. through 3

  1690. is talking

  1691. about amongst

  1692. other things

  1693. and all I can

  1694. tell you is

  1695. if you're

  1696. watching this

  1697. if you're

  1698. honest with

  1699. yourself

  1700. before I

  1701. became a

  1702. Christian

  1703. I wasn't

  1704. honest about

  1705. this until

  1706. after I

  1707. became a

  1708. Christian

  1709. but before

  1710. I became

  1711. a Christian

  1712. I didn't

  1713. want it

  1714. to be

  1715. true

  1716. I didn't

  1717. want Jesus

  1718. to be the

  1719. Savior and

  1720. the Lord

  1721. I didn't

  1722. want him

  1723. to be the

  1724. Lord of

  1725. my life

  1726. do you

  1727. know how

  1728. geeky

  1729. nerdy

  1730. awkward

  1731. and just

  1732. unlikable

  1733. Christians are

  1734. and you

  1735. want me to

  1736. become one

  1737. of them

  1738. no way

  1739. the Christian

  1740. life comes

  1741. when there

  1742. is that

  1743. pressure of

  1744. the Holy

  1745. Spirit

  1746. Romans 3

  1747. Revelation 3

  1748. talks about

  1749. Jesus knocking

  1750. at the door

  1751. of your

  1752. heart

  1753. and the

  1754. Christian

  1755. life comes

  1756. when you

  1757. lay down

  1758. your sword

  1759. and shield

  1760. and you

  1761. stop running

  1762. and you've

  1763. been running

  1764. like this

  1765. to try to

  1766. shut out

  1767. Jesus'

  1768. voice

  1769. and you've

  1770. been running

  1771. with your

  1772. eyes closed

  1773. and the

  1774. Holy Spirit

  1775. just puts

  1776. that pressure

  1777. and you

  1778. finally say

  1779. I surrender

  1780. and you

  1781. stop

  1782. you take

  1783. your fingers

  1784. out of your

  1785. ears

  1786. you open

  1787. your eyes

  1788. and you

  1789. turn

  1790. and you

  1791. let him

  1792. come with

  1793. all his

  1794. love

  1795. and you

  1796. let him

  1797. take you

  1798. for himself

  1799. and what

  1800. does it

  1801. mean to

  1802. be completely

  1803. forgiven of

  1804. everything you've

  1805. done in your

  1806. life if you

  1807. take that

  1808. to mean

  1809. that you

  1810. can do

  1811. whatever you

  1812. want then

  1813. you're like

  1814. the mom

  1815. and the

  1816. brothers outside

  1817. demanding

  1818. Jesus come

  1819. out and

  1820. talk to

  1821. us because

  1822. we're who

  1823. we are

  1824. that's not

  1825. what it

  1826. means

  1827. it's only

  1828. in the

  1829. perspective of

  1830. forgiveness

  1831. that you can

  1832. begin to have

  1833. moral clarity

  1834. about the

  1835. world and

  1836. about yourself

  1837. that you can

  1838. begin to

  1839. have humility

  1840. that you

  1841. can be

  1842. convicted

  1843. of a

  1844. sin

  1845. of pride

  1846. or prejudice

  1847. or racism

  1848. or greed

  1849. or gluttony

  1850. or lust

  1851. or something

  1852. and before

  1853. that we

  1854. always wanted

  1855. to put up

  1856. our good

  1857. fronts that

  1858. we're this

  1859. type of

  1860. person

  1861. and so we

  1862. try to figure

  1863. out a way

  1864. to spin

  1865. that

  1866. to deny

  1867. it

  1868. to make

  1869. it look

  1870. like we

  1871. didn't

  1872. do it

  1873. you know

  1874. we used

  1875. to joke

  1876. in my

  1877. house

  1878. that sometimes

  1879. when one of

  1880. the kids

  1881. you'd hear

  1882. this loud

  1883. crash

  1884. and what

  1885. was the

  1886. thing they

  1887. say

  1888. first they

  1889. say nothing

  1890. happened

  1891. second

  1892. they'd say

  1893. it wasn't

  1894. me

  1895. and then

  1896. the third

  1897. thing they'd

  1898. say it

  1899. wasn't my

  1900. fault

  1901. that was

  1902. the litany

  1903. right

  1904. nothing

  1905. happened

  1906. how come

  1907. somebody's

  1908. screaming

  1909. wasn't

  1910. me

  1911. how come

  1912. they're

  1913. screaming

  1914. your name

  1915. not my

  1916. fault

  1917. right

  1918. and you

  1919. go through

  1920. and it's

  1921. only if you

  1922. know you're

  1923. completely

  1924. forgiven

  1925. that you

  1926. can actually

  1927. stop and

  1928. say yeah

  1929. that was

  1930. me

  1931. that was

  1932. me

  1933. Lord help

  1934. me to

  1935. see the

  1936. moral world

  1937. as it

  1938. really is

  1939. help me

  1940. to confront

  1941. the selfishness

  1942. and the

  1943. greed

  1944. in my

  1945. life

  1946. it's only

  1947. in that

  1948. perspective

  1949. in that

  1950. place

  1951. that you

  1952. can actually

  1953. begin to

  1954. have true

  1955. moral improvement

  1956. at the very

  1957. very deep

  1958. level of the

  1959. heart

  1960. as the

  1961. gospel

  1962. becomes real

  1963. to you

  1964. invite you

  1965. to stand

  1966. if you

  1967. are here

  1968. and you've

  1969. never given

  1970. your life

  1971. to christ

  1972. and you

  1973. feel that

  1974. pressure

  1975. in your

  1976. heart

  1977. all i can

  1978. say is

  1979. just as i

  1980. used in

  1981. that example

  1982. that's the

  1983. holy spirit

  1984. knocking

  1985. that's god

  1986. giving you an

  1987. opportunity to

  1988. no longer be

  1989. closed off to

  1990. him

  1991. for god so

  1992. loved the

  1993. world that he

  1994. gave his only

  1995. begotten son to

  1996. the end who all

  1997. that all who

  1998. believe in him

  1999. will not perish

  2000. but have

  2001. eternal life

  2002. have everlasting

  2003. life

  2004. that's god

  2005. calling

  2006. and all i can

  2007. say to you is

  2008. just turn and

  2009. face him and

  2010. say jesus be my

  2011. savior

  2012. do that miracle

  2013. of conversion

  2014. in me

  2015. and for those

  2016. of us who

  2017. gather

  2018. we gather as

  2019. goldfish who've

  2020. been redeemed

  2021. and the reason

  2022. why church is so

  2023. important is that

  2024. we can say the

  2025. creed

  2026. we can gather

  2027. around the word

  2028. of god and be

  2029. reminded of the

  2030. gospel and of

  2031. eternal forgiveness

  2032. and how we

  2033. forget it

  2034. ten seconds

  2035. after we can

  2036. recommit around

  2037. the lord's table

  2038. that we are the

  2039. lords that he is

  2040. our savior that we

  2041. do not deserve

  2042. salvation but he

  2043. has given it

  2044. freely and fully

  2045. we are his he

  2046. will never let us

  2047. go it is worth

  2048. following him and

  2049. it doesn't matter

  2050. if legislation

  2051. says that this is

  2052. all a pile of

  2053. baloney which

  2054. just happened this

  2055. week

  2056. it's the truth

  2057. it's the truth

  2058. let's bow our

  2059. heads in prayer

  2060. father we ask

  2061. that the holy

  2062. spirit would come

  2063. with might and

  2064. power and deep

  2065. conviction we

  2066. thank and praise

  2067. you that you do

  2068. not weigh our

  2069. merits but pardon

  2070. our offenses we

  2071. thank and praise

  2072. you father that

  2073. in jesus that

  2074. infinite distance

  2075. between us and

  2076. you was closed

  2077. that we are now

  2078. in your arms that

  2079. we are your

  2080. children by adoption

  2081. and grace that

  2082. christ is our

  2083. hope of glory that

  2084. you will never

  2085. forget us that

  2086. you will never

  2087. abandon us that

  2088. you will never

  2089. leave us alone that

  2090. you will never

  2091. mock us or deride

  2092. us that all you

  2093. want to do father

  2094. is have your word

  2095. come deep within

  2096. us so that we

  2097. might be formed by

  2098. the gospel might be

  2099. formed by grace that

  2100. we might be formed

  2101. by forgiveness that

  2102. that grace and

  2103. forgiveness might

  2104. humble us and

  2105. create within us a

  2106. longing and yearning

  2107. to bring you glory

2108. to live a life that

  2109. honors you and is

2110. good for this city is

2111. good for this nation is

  2112. good for this world

  2113. that you will give

2114. us a heart for the

  2115. broken and the lost

  2116. rather than contempt

  2117. father we thank you

  2118. for the gospel that

  2119. we can recommit around

2120. who jesus is and what

2121. he did for us on the

  2122. cross and father grant

2123. us a heart to share the

  2124. gospel to bear witness

2125. to jesus he is the hope

2126. of glory and there is

2127. no other we ask all

2128. these things in the name

2129. of jesus and all god's

  2130. people said amen

  2131. but today is enduring

  2132. nothingяз Slim

  2133. our value wedding

  2134. we'll be able to

  2135. receive victory

  2136. and be held

  2137. to fight with

  2138. baby

  2139. and if we recognize

  2140. and we see

  2141. again

  2142. we align
