  1. Father, sometimes it's really easy to follow Jesus.

  2. Sometimes, Father Jesus, following him means we do things that people think are good and wise and true.

  3. And sometimes we have to do things and change in ways that many people in our society think are odd or weird, maybe even wrong.

  4. And Father, you know the different things in our hearts, and you know how much we like approval of others.

  5. And we ask, Father, that the Holy Spirit would bring the truth of who Jesus is and what he did for us on the cross, bring that home deeply to us.

  6. And we ask that you would bring your word home to us as well, that we would hear every word of your scripture as good news for us.

  7. Not only good for us on this side of the grave, but good into eternity.

  8. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. So, I have sort of a nerdy aspect to me that many of you are aware of.

  11. And I have a bit of a nerdy conscience that sometimes gets me into trouble.

  12. It might get me into trouble today.

  13. And so, the way I'm mentioning this is this.

  14. When I was in the Anglican Church of Canada, for many, many, many years, it would come time for Advent.

  15. And so, especially when I was first being trained, I was told we had to do an Advent sermon, right?

  16. Because it was Advent.

  17. And then I would be told that Advent is about, you know, there's the four candles.

  18. And I think, was it one of them, like, love, peace, joy, and hope?

  19. Do I have that?

  20. I'd probably have the order all wrong.

  21. But that's what I was told.

  22. That's what Advent is.

  23. And then I'd have to get up and do the sermon.

  24. But here's part of my nerdy aspect.

  25. I'd look at the scripture text for the day.

  26. And the scripture text had nothing to do with those themes.

  27. Like, I mean, maybe if you really played around with it like you did, you know, and that's what, you know, that's what I'd hear people other do.

  28. They'd play around with it.

  29. You know, maybe there was this, you know, I sometimes felt like if you took, you know, enough letters from different words, you could make the word peace or something.

  30. And you could talk about that.

  31. So, like, I, you know, I sort of think that my sermon should be based on the Bible text, not like I just do some things and add a couple of Bible verses.

  32. So, and then it got even more complicated because as I started to become aware of the whole prayer book and the Inglis Reformation, I started to realize that actually how people talked about Advent isn't sort of how ancient Christians talked about Advent and how Anglicanism talked about Advent up until like just a few decades ago.

  33. So, anyway, I wrote a very nerdy blog that came out on Monday.

  34. And for those two or three people who read my blogs, if I don't get them done by 4.30 now, then they come out on Monday.

  35. If I get it done before 4.30 on Friday, then it comes out on Saturday.

  36. So, my blog didn't get done at 4.30 on Friday.

  37. You'll get it tomorrow.

  38. But one of the things I discovered is that like Advent goes right back to at least the fifth century.

  39. In fact, I was talking to a guy who was like a patristic scholar just a week or two ago.

  40. So, and he told me that like for those guys like in the fifth century, Gregory the Great, and I can't pronounce the name of the other pope, what they just did is codified stuff that had been going on a lot longer, right?

  41. So, if it begins in the fifth century, it might have gone like a century or more even earlier.

  42. And what happened is that these fundamental scripture texts, Advent, this way of beginning the church year, they didn't quite think of it in those terms back then, but preparing you to celebrate Christmas and all of that.

  43. They had these sort of eight foundational texts, a gospel text and epistle, which would be read the first Sunday of Advent, second, third, and fourth.

  44. And so, actually, if you go and find a 1662 book of common prayer, or you go online and type in 1662 book of common prayer, colics, if you look at the readings, this is what's so cool.

  45. Like people who don't like, who want something thick and ancient, you're looking at the scripture texts that basically, up until they changed the lectionaries in the 1970s,

  46. you're looking at the texts they read for Advent, right back to the 400s.

  47. Like, isn't that cool?

  48. Now, here's the problem, though.

  49. Those texts don't talk about faith, hope, peace, and joy.

  50. And so, what happens is that the Reformation comes in the mid-1500s, and Cramner, sort of this brilliant mind who ended up becoming a martyr,

  51. he looks at these readings, and he ends up making two completely new, three basically new prayers,

  52. and then a fourth one was added.

  53. That's too nerdy.

  54. Sorry, I'm losing you.

  55. But here's the thing.

  56. The collect that we have for all of Advent really gives you the ancient Christian, as reflected through the Reformation,

  57. when we wanted to return to the Bible and the Gospel, it gives you what Advent is.

  58. Now, listen, you know, faith, hope, peace, and joy, those are great.

  59. The Bible doesn't tell you how to celebrate Advent, so, like, there's not, this isn't like a Gospel issue or anything like that.

  60. So, all this is to say, so, Daniel and I are talking, like, months ago about what our scripture texts were going to be,

  61. and Daniel said, well, you know, we always do some specialized services around Advent and Christmas.

  62. Why don't we make December 12th the Advent Sunday, and then, which is what I'm doing,

  63. and then 19th and 24th and 25th we'll have Christmas sermons on the key Christmas texts,

  64. and then we'll do some other stuff December 26th, January 2nd, before we get back to Mark in January.

  65. So, what we're looking at today is we're looking at, in a sense, the text,

  66. which is the, that helps to form the ancient Christian, as reflected through the Reformation,

  67. way of understanding what Advent is all about.

  68. And what you see from that is it's about the three comings of Christ.

  69. It's about remembering, of course, the birth of Jesus humbly, the first coming,

  70. and it's also remembering the second coming, where he's going to come in glory to judge the living and the dead,

  71. and it is urging us to consider the third coming, which is when he comes into your life to be your Savior and your Lord.

  72. Now, this is all good, but one of the things is, is I discovered this week,

  73. and it's been bothering my nerdy conscience all week,

  74. is I could go through this text in such a way that the average Canadian would think,

  75. yeah, that sounds like a really good idea, I agree with that, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

  76. but not realizing that the Bible text actually goes against what most Canadians believe.

  77. And that doesn't feel very Canadian Advent-y, you know,

  78. and so I've struggled with it all week, but we're going to look at it anyway.

  79. Okay, so what we're going to do first is we're going to just pray or read the Colic for All of Advent,

  80. and you're just going to get it in your mind, and then you're going to see as we go through the Scripture text,

  81. we'll pray it again at the end, how this Scripture text has had a huge formative influence

  82. in the Book of Romans on how to understand Advent from an ancient perspective, a thick perspective.

  83. So you have it on the screen, that would be great.

  84. Let's pray it, say it together.

  85. Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness

  86. and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life

  87. in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility,

  88. that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty

  89. to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal

  90. through him who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit,

  91. now, so one God, now and forever. Amen.

  92. So you can see, I mean, there's already that judgment thing,

  93. which we're going to talk just a tiny bit about because there's some other stuff to get at,

  94. but let's look at the Bible text, and as we start to look at the Bible text,

  95. you'll see how this text, which goes way back, Christians in the 5th century,

  96. chose this as one of the texts on the first Sunday of Advent

  97. to prepare people for the birth of Christ, to remember it,

  98. to launch yourself into the Christian year, and so here's this text.

  99. Romans chapter 13, and we'll start at verse 8.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  100. Owe no one anything except to love each other.

  101. Just by the way, if you have your own Bible, it's really good to follow along.

  102. We have it up there on the screen, and you online, you can see it down here.

  103. But, you know, if you're at home, get your own Bible.

  104. It's really good to have your own Bible and to be able to look around the text

  105. to see if I'm handling the text correctly and honestly and fairly.

  106. I'll read it again.

  107. Owe no one anything except to love each other.

  108. For the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

  109. And here the word law doesn't mean like the law of Rome or the law of Canada.

  110. It means what we call the Old Testament

  111. and our Jewish friends call the Tanakh or the Torah.

  112. So it's saying all of the commands in the Bible.

  113. I'll read that verse 8 again.

  114. Owe no one anything except to love each other,

  115. for the one who loves another has fulfilled the commandments of the Bible, the law.

  116. For the commandments, verse 9, you shall not commit adultery,

  117. you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,

  118. and any other commandment are summed up in this word.

  119. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  120. Love does no wrong to a neighbor.

  121. Therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.

  122. Now, that is a good text.

  123. But if you think about it for a second,

  124. it has something in there which is a bit of a puzzle.

  125. It says, verse 8,

  126. Owe no one anything except to love each other.

  127. It's saying that somehow or another,

  128. I owe it to you to love you.

  129. That I owe it to people,

  130. owe it to each other to love them.

  131. Now, if you think about it for a second,

  132. this is actually an idea that Canadians would find,

  133. like just common sense.

  134. Like if you were getting talking with,

  135. you know, the Tim Hortons coffee person,

  136. or, you know, Bridgehead, or Starbucks,

  137. or something like that,

  138. and you got chatting with them

  139. because you're friendly with them,

  140. and you just talked about how there was this interaction

  141. and how a person was rude to you,

  142. they would just automatically say,

  143. well, it's just common sense, of course.

  144. Like everybody knows that it's,

  145. that's wrong,

  146. that they shouldn't have been rude to you.

  147. They should have acted in a more loving manner,

  148. that what they did was wrong.

  149. And that would just be,

  150. that's like common morality in Canada.

  151. But if you think about it for a second,

  152. it's a very odd idea.

  153. Like, and it's not actually,

  154. it isn't in fact the case that it's obvious

  155. to most people in the world,

  156. either today or throughout history.

  157. Like, in classic Hinduism,

  158. the caste that you're in,

  159. you deserve it.

  160. If you're at the very, very bottom

  161. of the caste hierarchy,

  162. well, you deserve that.

  163. And if you're at the top of the caste hierarchy,

  164. you don't owe it to love a lower caste person.

  165. They would go, what?

  166. They're in this situation of abject poverty,

  167. impoverishment, and powerlessness

  168. because they deserve it,

  169. because of what's happened in their previous lives.

  170. That's just, that's common sense.

  171. I deserve what I have,

  172. they deserve what they have,

  173. and I have no obligation to love them.

  174. That would be common sense.

  175. If you think about it within the Quran,

  176. the Quran is a book of conquest

  177. that Allah has basically commanded

  178. his followers and his people

  179. that the goal is that all of the world

  180. will be subject to Allah.

  181. And it wouldn't be an obvious thing

  182. from reading the Quran

  183. that there's an obligation to love.

  184. In fact, Muhammad had slaves.

  185. He was a warrior,

  186. and Muhammad was the greatest

  187. of all the followers of Allah.

  188. He was Allah's prophet.

  189. It isn't obvious in that context

  190. that you're owed,

  191. that you're owed it,

  192. that people deserve to be loved.

  193. They're owed it.

  194. And if you think about it,

  195. even, in fact,

  196. if you read, like,

  197. serious philosophers

  198. who take evolution seriously,

  199. it's not obvious

  200. that human beings are owed love

  201. because, you know,

  202. at the end of the day,

  203. from an evolutionary

  204. and a scientific perspective,

  205. there's nothing special

  206. about human beings.

  207. Like, there's nothing special

  208. about us.

  209. There's really, in a sense,

  210. I have no more of an obligation

  211. to love you

  212. than I do to love a bird

  213. or a budgie

  214. or an earthworm.

  215. That, in a sense,

  216. you're all just sort of the same.

  217. We might claim certain things,

  218. and one of you might claim

  219. that I owe it to love you,

  220. but that's really not based

  221. on science or reason.

  222. It's just something

  223. that you happen to say.

  224. In fact, actually,

  225. if you really think about it,

  226. I know this is a discredited idea,

  227. but the reason it's discredited

  228. is actually because

  229. of the influence

  230. of Christianity,

  231. not because of anything

  232. inherent to the problem

  233. of taking naturalistic evolution

  234. seriously.

  235. A very, very good case

  236. would be that, in fact,

  237. I don't owe anything

  238. to the weak.

  239. The weak should die,

  240. and it's, in fact,

  241. better for the human race

  242. in the long run

  243. if strong people

  244. are able to exercise

  245. their strength,

  246. have the majority of the food

  247. and the money

  248. and the resources

  249. and people who are poor

  250. will die off

  251. and those of us

  252. who are stronger

  253. and will actually be making

  254. the human race

  255. in a stronger and better way.

  256. And I know that's a discounted idea,

  257. but it's not discounted

  258. because there's anything

  259. inherently wrong

  260. with the idea

  261. within that worldview.

  262. It ends up ultimately

  263. because, you know what,

  264. we owe others

  265. the debt of love,

  266. and that idea

  267. comes from Christianity.

  268. In fact,

  269. if you could put up

  270. the first point,

  271. this is what Christianity teaches.

  272. Because the triune God

  273. is love,

  274. he designed human beings

  275. to be loved

  276. and to love.

  277. Because the triune God

  278. is love,

  279. he designed human beings

  280. to be loved

  281. and to love.

  282. That's how he designed

  283. human beings.

  284. If you go to

  285. an Anglican wedding ceremony,

  286. one of the things

  287. we say in the ceremony

  288. at sort of the opening remarks

  289. is that

  290. the institution of marriage

  291. is something that was

  292. instituted of God

  293. in the time of man

  294. and woman's innocency.

  295. In other words,

  296. that God designed

  297. human beings

  298. that some human beings

  299. would enter into marriage.

  300. And that's not something

  301. that was created

  302. because of evil

  303. coming into the world.

  304. That was part of God's

  305. original good intention.

  306. That that's just how

  307. God designed human beings.

  308. And this is the same thing

  309. here with this idea

  310. is that God designed

  311. human beings

  312. in a sense when

  313. when we say

  314. oh no one anything

  315. except to love each other,

  316. this is actually saying

  317. something that really

  318. you'd have to think

  319. that it's a bit of a tension

  320. within other religions

  321. and philosophies

  322. because there is

  323. something intuitive

  324. about that

  325. that does make sense.

  326. even though

  327. then maybe our mind

  328. will come and say

  329. no no no

  330. Allah has said

  331. something different

  332. or the Hindu scriptures

  333. have said something different

  334. or the demands of Marxism

  335. or the demands of cultural theory

  336. or critical theory

  337. demand something

  338. very very different

  339. than this

  340. but and so there's

  341. at least

  342. for some people

  343. there's a bit of a tension

  344. between these types of things

  345. but

  346. this is why

  347. in fact

  348. Christianity

  349. has this very very

  350. deep understanding

  351. of why it is

  352. in fact the case

  353. that I owe it

  354. to the coffee person

  355. to treat them

  356. in a loving way

  357. I owe it

  358. to the other drivers

  359. I owe it

  360. to those in government

  361. to treat them

  362. in a loving type of way

  363. now

  364. it's very curious

  365. that this

  366. this powerful idea

  367. is seen right here

  368. in the text

  369. at the same time

  370. and this is where

  371. my nerdy conscience

  372. issue came out

  373. because you see

  374. I just the text

  375. that I read

  376. it could be understood

  377. in such a way

  378. that the average Canadian

  379. would say

  380. yeah yeah I understand that

  381. because the average Canadian

  382. would say

  383. well you don't actually

  384. have to

  385. to be married

  386. to live together

  387. and as

  388. you know

  389. but if you're living together

  390. you can't cheat

  391. on your partner

  392. like that's wrong

  393. like that

  394. that would be

  395. a very common idea

  396. and you wouldn't have

  397. to do much

  398. to argue for that

  399. for most people

  400. it would just be viewed

  401. as inherently correct

  402. and even later on

  403. in the text

  404. when it talks about

  405. sexual immorality

  406. most Canadians

  407. from within their own

  408. perspective

  409. would understand themselves

  410. to be very moral people

  411. in the sexual matter

  412. and so I could

  413. read both of these things

  414. and I could go on

  415. but not realizing

  416. that actually the Bible

  417. is disagreeing with Canadians

  418. in a very powerful way

  419. and I've struggled

  420. in my conscience

  421. I wouldn't say struggled

  422. the devil has told me

  423. that I shouldn't talk

  424. about this

  425. but I thank you

  426. for praying for me

  427. here's what these two

  428. it's right here

  429. the word adultery

  430. which is a good word

  431. to translate it

  432. in verse 9

  433. you shall not commit adultery

  434. and later on

  435. in verse

  436. later on when we read it

  437. in verse 13

  438. there's the word

  439. sexual immorality

  440. in the original language

  441. it's the same word

  442. and the word

  443. is part of the

  444. porneia word group

  445. but here's the problem

  446. what does the porneia word group

  447. say

  448. the porneia word group

  449. is basically saying

  450. that sexual knowing

  451. and sexual stimulation

  452. is a good gift from God

  453. but is reserved

  454. to be enjoyed

  455. in the life

  456. of a biological male

  457. married to a biological female

  458. and outside of that

  459. we are called

  460. to sexual abstinence

  461. in singleness

  462. so now that I've just

  463. broken the law

  464. of Bill C4

  465. I'll say it again

  466. sexual knowing

  467. and stimulation

  468. is good

  469. actually it's not clear

  470. whether I've broken the law

  471. and not

  472. but the wording

  473. is very unclear

  474. but because the wording

  475. is unclear

  476. it might be that

  477. if I preach this sermon

  478. in a year

  479. you'll have to bail me out

  480. later in the week

  481. and I'm not saying

  482. that for laughs

  483. it's going to definitely

  484. go to the courts

  485. and it should concern

  486. Christians

  487. if you haven't looked

  488. at it or read it

  489. it should concern you

  490. the way it's worded

  491. is

  492. it can mean

  493. that as long as

  494. I don't do it

  495. in a therapeutic context

  496. for money

  497. that I'm fine

  498. but it's not clear

  499. that what I just

  500. have said

  501. is in fact

  502. breaking the law

  503. it's not clear

  504. and that was pointed out

  505. to the bill makers

  506. and they refused

  507. to clarify it

  508. so

  509. it's not clear

  510. I'm going to say it again

  511. what does the

  512. pornea word group mean

  513. it means this

  514. sexual knowing

  515. and stimulation

  516. is a good gift

  517. from God

  518. but it is reserved

  519. to be enjoyed

  520. in the life

  521. of a biblical

  522. in the life

  523. of a biological male

  524. married to a

  525. biological female

  526. or

  527. for those

  528. outside of that

  529. sexual abstinence

  530. and singleness

  531. now this is a

  532. heartbreaking text

  533. for many people

  534. and I know

  535. that there are

  536. people here

  537. who struggle

  538. with this teaching

  539. and I know

  540. it's very very funny

  541. because nowadays

  542. when we talk

  543. about this

  544. it automatically

  545. people think

  546. of trans

  547. and

  548. our trans

  549. family members

  550. or friends

  551. or are a

  552. lesbian

  553. and gay

  554. family members

  555. or friends

  556. but in fact

  557. this bible

  558. doesn't pick

  559. on it

  560. the text

  561. the word group

  562. doesn't pick

  563. on anybody

  564. it's a word

  565. to all human

  566. beings

  567. it includes

  568. it's a challenge

  569. to men

  570. and women

  571. who watch

  572. heterosexual

  573. pornography

  574. or

  575. have affairs

  576. or

  577. it's a

  578. challenge

  579. to all human

  580. beings

  581. but it's

  582. very curious

  583. isn't it

  584. that

  585. it's in the

  586. same text

  587. that say

  588. that we're

  589. owed love

  590. that we have

  591. this thing

  592. here which

  593. many Canadians

  594. would say

  595. is very

  596. profoundly

  597. unloving

  598. this week

  599. I was reading

  600. a story

  601. of a person

  602. who at 15

  603. years of age

  604. came out

  605. as a lesbian

  606. and she lived

  607. openly as a

  608. lesbian

  609. and when she

  610. was in

  611. university

  612. amidst the

  613. heartbreak

  614. of her

  615. girlfriend

  616. dumping her

  617. she came

  618. across

  619. she started

  620. for a variety

  621. of reasons

  622. looking at a

  623. couple of

  624. bible texts

  625. and she

  626. started to

  627. get in

  628. this little

  629. bit of

  630. a journey

  631. as to

  632. whether

  633. this first

  634. century Jew

  635. had something

  636. for her

  637. life

  638. and she

  639. didn't know

  640. what to do

  641. with any

  642. of this

  643. and so

  644. interestingly

  645. enough

  646. the only

  647. people she

  648. knew

  649. who were

  650. out

  651. Christians

  652. were as

  653. a lesbian

  654. couple

  655. and so

  656. she talked

  657. to the

  658. lesbian

  659. couple

  660. about it

  661. and they

  662. said that

  663. she should

  664. pursue

  665. Jesus

  666. that the

  667. bible

  668. has things

  669. to say

  670. that are

  671. just wrong

  672. about other

  673. things

  674. but she

  675. should pursue

  676. Jesus

  677. so it

  678. was with

  679. the encouragement

  680. of this

  681. lesbian

  682. couple

  683. that she

  684. did pursue

  685. Jesus

  686. and she

  687. ended up

  688. becoming a

  689. Christian

  690. and so

  691. as I'm

  692. looking at

  693. this text

  694. all week

  695. it's been

  696. playing with

  697. my mind

  698. if a

  699. member of

  700. the lesbian

  701. or the

  702. gay community

  703. was to come

  704. here wondering

  705. if there's

  706. something for

  707. them and

  708. Jesus

  709. or if a

  710. person

  711. struggling

  712. with

  713. or not

  714. struggling

  715. just very

  716. happily

  717. trans

  718. happily gay

  719. happily

  720. lesbian

  721. and if

  722. they were

  723. to come

  724. here

  725. if they

  726. were to

  727. see

  728. that I've

  729. now shut

  730. the door

  731. on them

  732. but

  733. you know

  734. that very

  735. very first

  736. thing is

  737. true

  738. the triune

  739. God is

  740. love

  741. and because

  742. the triune

  743. God is

  744. love

  745. he designed

  746. human beings

  747. to be loved

  748. and to love

  749. only that

  750. explains

  751. why it is

  752. that we

  753. sense

  754. that we

  755. are

  756. that

  757. that you

  758. are owed

  759. love

  760. only that

  761. statement

  762. explains it

  763. if you

  764. just think

  765. for a

  766. second

  767. it's

  768. not

  769. obvious

  770. actually

  771. in terms

  772. of the

  773. the real

  774. serious

  775. theology

  776. and philosophy

  777. of the world's

  778. religions

  779. and the

  780. and the

  781. and the

  782. religion

  783. of the

  784. West

  785. only this

  786. very very

  787. powerful

  788. truth

  789. that there

  790. is a

  791. God

  792. that does

  793. exist

  794. that the

  795. God

  796. who does

  797. exist

  798. is the

  799. triune

  800. God

  801. and it's

  802. because

  803. the

  804. triune

  805. God

  806. is triune

  807. three

  808. persons

  809. but one

  810. God

  811. that

  812. that it

  813. can be

  814. said

  815. that God

  816. is love

  817. because

  818. the

  819. father

  820. has

  821. always

  822. loved

  823. the

  824. son

  825. and the

  826. son

  827. has

  828. always

  829. loved

  830. the

  831. father

  832. and the

  833. son

  834. the

  835. Holy

  836. Spirit

  837. and the

  838. Holy

  839. Spirit

  840. the

  841. son

  842. and

  843. and

  844. it's

  845. because

  846. that has

  847. been true

  848. from all

  849. eternity

  850. that God

  851. designed

  852. human beings

  853. to be

  854. to be

  855. loved

  856. and to

  857. love

  858. the

  859. first

  860. thing

  861. is

  862. I'm

  863. going to

  864. say this

  865. a bit

  866. more in a

  867. moment

  868. is this

  869. text

  870. should never

  871. be taken

  872. by Christians

  873. in a

  874. political

  875. sense

  876. it's not

  877. part of

  878. the culture

  879. wars

  880. because

  881. you see

  882. this text

  883. is not

  884. about us

  885. versus

  886. them

  887. this text

  888. is about

  889. us

  890. because

  891. every

  892. single

  893. human

  894. being

  895. is

  896. sexually

  897. broken

  898. every

  899. single

  900. human

  901. being

  902. is

  903. sexually

  904. broken

  905. some

  906. of us

  907. more

  908. than

  909. others

  910. some

  911. of us

  912. are

  913. broken

  914. to such

  915. an

  916. extent

  917. that

  918. if

  919. one

  920. of

  921. the

  922. rest

  923. of

  924. us

  925. heard

  926. about

  927. it

  928. we

  929. would

  930. be

  931. actually

  932. quite

  933. shocked

  934. at

  935. the

  936. depth

  937. of

  938. our

  939. sexual

  940. brokenness

  941. so this

  942. is not

  943. an

  944. us

  945. versus

  946. them

  947. text

  948. this

  949. is a

  950. text

  951. about

  952. us

  953. finding

  954. a way

  955. forward

  956. to that

  957. place

  958. where we

  959. understand

  960. that we

  961. are loved

  962. I

  963. meant to

  964. show

  965. it

  966. a couple

  967. of weeks

  968. ago

  969. when

  970. or a

  971. month

  972. or two

  973. ago

  974. now

  975. Louise

  976. and I

  977. were in

  978. Montreal

  979. for a

  980. couple

  981. of days

  982. and we

  983. stayed

  984. on the

  985. south

  986. side

  987. of

  988. the

  989. Mount

  990. Royal

  991. and there's

  992. this

  993. Mount

  994. Royal

  995. it's a

  996. very

  997. beautiful

  998. park

  999. and we

  1000. decided

  1001. to walk

  1002. from where

  1003. we were

  1004. to the

  1005. other

  1006. side

  1007. of the

  1008. mountain

  1009. to go

  1010. to St.

  1011. Joseph's

  1012. Oratory

  1013. and it

  1014. was just

  1015. a beautiful

  1016. time to

  1017. go

  1018. you know

  1019. it was

  1020. one of

  1021. those

  1022. times

  1023. of the

  1024. leaves

  1025. on the

  1026. ground

  1027. that the

  1028. ground

  1029. was really

  1030. covered

  1031. with all

  1032. these

  1033. beautiful

  1034. multicolored

  1035. leaves

  1036. but there's

  1037. still enough

  1038. on the

  1039. trees

  1040. that you

  1041. had the

  1042. beautiful

  1043. leaves

  1044. on the

  1045. bottom

  1046. and above

  1047. you

  1048. all around

  1049. and it

  1050. was a

  1051. nice

  1052. temperature

  1053. it was

  1054. really

  1055. beautiful

  1056. anyway

  1057. we're

  1058. wandering

  1059. for a

  1060. way

  1061. we're

  1062. not in

  1063. any

  1064. rush

  1065. right

  1066. we're

  1067. just

  1068. taking

  1069. a

  1070. couple

  1071. of

  1072. days

  1073. off

  1074. so we

  1075. come

  1076. to

  1077. a

  1078. map

  1079. and

  1080. it

  1081. was

  1082. a

  1083. very

  1084. very

  1085. very

  1086. very

  1087. very

  1088. good

  1089. accurate

  1090. look at

  1091. the

  1092. map

  1093. and you

  1094. think

  1095. well

  1096. that's

  1097. a

  1098. nice

  1099. map

  1100. but I

  1101. don't

  1102. know

  1103. where I

  1104. am

  1105. like

  1106. in other

  1107. words

  1108. it

  1109. becomes

  1110. useless

  1111. and that's

  1112. actually

  1113. what goes

  1114. on in

  1115. our

  1116. culture

  1117. you see

  1118. the power

  1119. of what

  1120. this text

  1121. is going

  1122. to try

  1123. to point

  1124. this to

  1125. it's

  1126. trying

  1127. to

  1128. understand

  1129. it's

  1130. trying

  1131. to help

  1132. us

  1133. to

  1134. understand

  1135. where

  1136. we

  1137. need

  1138. to

  1139. go

  1140. and

  1141. where

  1142. we

  1143. are

  1144. and

  1145. part

  1146. of it

  1147. wants

  1148. to

  1149. understand

  1150. that you

  1151. are

  1152. sexually

  1153. broken

  1154. and that

  1155. if you

  1156. and I

  1157. just

  1158. look

  1159. within

  1160. to try

  1161. to figure

  1162. out

  1163. who we

  1164. are

  1165. and where

  1166. we have

  1167. to go

  1168. it's

  1169. hard

  1170. to figure

  1171. out

  1172. the

  1173. broken

  1174. parts

  1175. from the

  1176. good

  1177. parts

  1178. because

  1179. we look

  1180. at

  1181. ourselves

  1182. within

  1183. by our

  1184. normal

  1185. natural

  1186. abilities

  1187. and we

  1188. are like

  1189. looking

  1190. at the

  1191. beautiful

  1192. map

  1193. about

  1194. Mount

  1195. Royal

  1196. Park

  1197. without

  1198. knowing

  1199. where

  1200. we

  1201. are

  1202. to

  1203. know

  1204. whether

  1205. we

  1206. should

  1207. be

  1208. going

  1209. here

  1210. or

  1211. here

  1212. or

  1213. there

  1214. or

  1215. there

  1216. you

  1217. see

  1218. you

  1219. think

  1220. about

  1221. it

  1222. as well

  1223. if

  1224. because

  1225. the

  1226. triune

  1227. God

  1228. is

  1229. love

  1230. he

  1231. designed

  1232. human

  1233. beings

  1234. to be

  1235. loved

  1236. and to

  1237. love

  1238. that

  1239. word

  1240. designed

  1241. is really

  1242. important

  1243. and that

  1244. begins

  1245. to get

  1246. at the

  1247. great

  1248. profound

  1249. difference

  1250. between

  1251. the

  1252. Christian

  1253. faith

  1254. and how

  1255. most

  1256. Canadians

  1257. think

  1258. about

  1259. these

  1260. things

  1261. now

  1262. is

  1263. because

  1264. we're

  1265. stuck

  1266. by

  1267. that

  1268. word

  1269. designed

  1270. and that

  1271. we were

  1272. designed

  1273. by

  1274. love

  1275. to be

  1276. loved

  1277. and to

  1278. love

  1279. it

  1280. means

  1281. that

  1282. we

  1283. can't

  1284. treat

  1285. human

  1286. beings

  1287. as if

  1288. we're

  1289. just

  1290. plastic

  1291. as if

  1292. it's

  1293. just

  1294. clay

  1295. and you

  1296. can

  1297. just

  1298. mold

  1299. that

  1300. clay

  1301. in any

  1302. type

  1303. of

  1304. way

  1305. in fact

  1306. actually

  1307. if you

  1308. hear of

  1309. somebody

  1310. treating

  1311. another

  1312. human

  1313. being

  1314. if you

  1315. come

  1316. across

  1317. a dad

  1318. or a

  1319. mom

  1320. treating

  1321. their

  1322. kid

  1323. as if

  1324. they're

  1325. clay

  1326. that can

  1327. just

  1328. be

  1329. molded

  1330. in any

  1331. type

  1332. of way

  1333. that the

  1334. parent

  1335. wants

  1336. what do

  1337. we say

  1338. that's

  1339. not

  1340. loving

  1341. that's

  1342. what we

  1343. say

  1344. if we

  1345. see that

  1346. a man

  1347. is treating

  1348. his wife

  1349. as if

  1350. she's

  1351. just

  1352. sort of

  1353. plastic

  1354. or

  1355. treating

  1356. her like

  1357. she's a

  1358. blank

  1359. slate

  1360. and he

  1361. can just

  1362. paint on

  1363. her

  1364. whatever

  1365. he

  1366. wants

  1367. we say

  1368. that's

  1369. not

  1370. loving

  1371. and it's

  1372. because

  1373. we

  1374. understand

  1375. on one

  1376. fundamental

  1377. level

  1378. that if

  1379. love

  1380. if we

  1381. are designed

  1382. by love

  1383. to receive

  1384. love

  1385. and to

  1386. give love

  1387. that means

  1388. we're not

  1389. just plastic

  1390. we're not

  1391. just clay

  1392. to be

  1393. molded

  1394. we're just

  1395. not blank

  1396. canvases

  1397. there's

  1398. something

  1399. there

  1400. that can

  1401. love

  1402. and

  1403. and has

  1404. to be

  1405. loved

  1406. and we

  1407. can't be

  1408. reduced

  1409. and if

  1410. we're

  1411. designed

  1412. it means

  1413. that there's

  1414. things that

  1415. we can

  1416. do

  1417. that might

  1418. seem

  1419. right to

  1420. us

  1421. but are

  1422. actually

  1423. breaking

  1424. us

  1425. like

  1426. if you

  1427. had an

  1428. iphone

  1429. 13

  1430. pro

  1431. and you

  1432. happened to

  1433. leave it

  1434. down over

  1435. there

  1436. and one

  1437. of the

  1438. beautiful

  1439. little

  1440. kids

  1441. picked it

  1442. up

  1443. and figured

  1444. out

  1445. that that

  1446. would be

  1447. a great

  1448. way to

  1449. hammer in

  1450. a loose

  1451. nail on

  1452. one of

  1453. the chairs

  1454. you'd

  1455. grab it

  1456. from them

  1457. and why

  1458. because an

  1459. iphone 13

  1460. pro isn't

  1461. designed

  1462. to hang

  1463. hammer and

  1464. attack

  1465. and if

  1466. the little

  1467. smart ass

  1468. kid said

  1469. but it's

  1470. perfect for

  1471. it

  1472. you'd

  1473. say

  1474. no

  1475. it's

  1476. not

  1477. designed

  1478. for

  1479. it

  1480. and

  1481. consider

  1482. a couple

  1483. of other

  1484. things

  1485. I'm not

  1486. going to

  1487. give you

  1488. the answer

  1489. to these

  1490. things

  1491. but I

  1492. want to

  1493. try to

  1494. show

  1495. those of

  1496. you

  1497. who are

  1498. all of us

  1499. who have

  1500. trouble

  1501. thinking

  1502. about

  1503. this

  1504. and a lot

  1505. of us

  1506. Christians

  1507. are embarrassed

  1508. to even

  1509. think about

  1510. it

  1511. or talk

  1512. about

  1513. it

  1514. and if

  1515. you're

  1516. listening

  1517. in

  1518. and you're

  1519. here as

  1520. a seeker

  1521. and now

  1522. maybe you're

  1523. not a seeker

  1524. anymore

  1525. you're here

  1526. as a skeptic

  1527. you came

  1528. in sort

  1529. of like

  1530. this

  1531. but now

  1532. you're

  1533. sitting

  1534. like

  1535. this

  1536. just

  1537. consider

  1538. a couple

  1539. of these

  1540. questions

  1541. because the

  1542. fact of

  1543. the matter

  1544. is

  1545. if you

  1546. not only

  1547. follow

  1548. the trajectory

  1549. of the fact

  1550. that we're

  1551. owed love

  1552. but follow

  1553. the trajectory

  1554. of these

  1555. other things

  1556. which you

  1557. just think

  1558. are obvious

  1559. you realize

  1560. that you're

  1561. actually on

  1562. the Christian

  1563. side of the

  1564. conversation

  1565. not against

  1566. it

  1567. but you don't

  1568. realize it

  1569. like think

  1570. about it

  1571. for a second

  1572. every single

  1573. person

  1574. that you

  1575. almost

  1576. everybody

  1577. you meet

  1578. will care

  1579. it doesn't

  1580. matter how

  1581. secular

  1582. the person

  1583. is

  1584. or how

  1585. spiritual

  1586. the person

  1587. is

  1588. they care

  1589. who their

  1590. loved ones

  1591. sleep with

  1592. you meet a

  1593. 25 year old

  1594. and they start

  1595. to tell you

  1596. that their

  1597. mom has

  1598. divorced

  1599. their dad

  1600. and she's

  1601. sleeping with

  1602. this guy

  1603. but he's a

  1604. jerk

  1605. he's going

  1606. to hurt

  1607. her

  1608. they care

  1609. who their

  1610. mom sleeps

  1611. with

  1612. and moms

  1613. and dads

  1614. care who

  1615. their kids

  1616. sleep with

  1617. but if you

  1618. care who

  1619. people sleep

  1620. with

  1621. why can't

  1622. God

  1623. like why

  1624. can't

  1625. God

  1626. and if in

  1627. fact the

  1628. true and

  1629. living God

  1630. is the

  1631. triune God

  1632. who is

  1633. love

  1634. who designed

  1635. us

  1636. maybe he

  1637. actually knows

  1638. the right

  1639. maybe he

  1640. knows what's

  1641. right

  1642. or

  1643. if your

  1644. kid

  1645. begins to

  1646. get caught

  1647. up in

  1648. neo-nazi

  1649. racist

  1650. literature

  1651. or if

  1652. your kid

  1653. gets caught

  1654. up in

  1655. something

  1656. which not

  1657. just says

  1658. that there's

  1659. problems with

  1660. covid-19

  1661. vaccines but

  1662. all vaccines

  1663. and they

  1664. really get

  1665. identified with

  1666. that and

  1667. start to tell

  1668. you other

  1669. types of

  1670. stuff and

  1671. they start

  1672. to hang

  1673. around with

  1674. people like

  1675. that and

  1676. they get

  1677. their identity

  1678. out of it

  1679. you care

  1680. about how

  1681. their identity

  1682. is being

  1683. formed

  1684. you care

  1685. what their

  1686. identity

  1687. is based

  1688. on

  1689. but if

  1690. you care

  1691. about it

  1692. why can't

  1693. God

  1694. if you

  1695. find out

  1696. that your

  1697. best friend

  1698. has this

  1699. new boyfriend

  1700. but he

  1701. treats

  1702. your best

  1703. friend

  1704. like she's

  1705. just a play

  1706. thing

  1707. a toy

  1708. a playground

  1709. don't you

  1710. sort of

  1711. agree with

  1712. the human

  1713. that the

  1714. bible teaching

  1715. that a human

  1716. being is

  1717. more like a

  1718. temple than

  1719. a playground

  1720. that human

  1721. beings are

  1722. more like

  1723. temples

  1724. that there's

  1725. something sacred

  1726. and that human

  1727. beings are

  1728. just play

  1729. things or

  1730. play toys

  1731. but you see

  1732. once you think

  1733. these things

  1734. you're on the

  1735. Christian side

  1736. of the

  1737. conversation

  1738. now you're

  1739. in the

  1740. world of

  1741. the bible

  1742. you don't

  1743. treat a

  1744. person like

  1745. a blank

  1746. slate

  1747. or like

  1748. clay

  1749. and in

  1750. fact even

  1751. if you

  1752. think about

  1753. it for a

  1754. second

  1755. talk to

  1756. alcoholics

  1757. talk to

  1758. people who've

  1759. struggled

  1760. with drug

  1761. addiction

  1762. but not

  1763. just that

  1764. people have

  1765. had to go

  1766. into therapy

  1767. for all

  1768. sorts of

  1769. other reasons

  1770. what you

  1771. can

  1772. if you

  1773. talk to

  1774. an

  1775. alcoholic

  1776. those of

  1777. us who've

  1778. struggled

  1779. with any

  1780. type of

  1781. addiction

  1782. what they'll

  1783. tell you

  1784. is this

  1785. that the

  1786. thing that

  1787. was the

  1788. most natural

  1789. desire

  1790. inside of

  1791. them and

  1792. the most

  1793. powerful

  1794. desire

  1795. inside of

  1796. them was

  1797. ruining their

  1798. lives

  1799. and they

  1800. needed some

  1801. type of

  1802. therapy and

  1803. help to

  1804. get clarity

  1805. to set

  1806. aside the

  1807. desires that

  1808. were more

  1809. powerful so

  1810. they could

  1811. start to

  1812. have sanity

  1813. and freedom

  1814. and control

  1815. but you

  1816. see if you

  1817. understand and

  1818. think that now

  1819. you're on the

  1820. Christian side of

  1821. the conversation

  1822. you're on the

  1823. biblical side of

  1824. the conversation

  1825. could you put

  1826. up the next

  1827. point

  1828. here's another

  1829. thing

  1830. I know I

  1831. have to be

  1832. my time

  1833. in every

  1834. human being

  1835. you can see

  1836. the truth

  1837. that you

  1838. are designed

  1839. and the

  1840. truth

  1841. that the

  1842. design is

  1843. bent or

  1844. broken

  1845. in other

  1846. words

  1847. that you're

  1848. not just

  1849. designed

  1850. but you're a

  1851. little bit

  1852. of a ruin

  1853. and so am I

  1854. by the way

  1855. when I say

  1856. this

  1857. there's three

  1858. fingers pointing

  1859. back at me

  1860. you think

  1861. about it

  1862. if you go to

  1863. a science

  1864. fiction movie

  1865. or anything

  1866. like that

  1867. or you watch

  1868. some documentaries

  1869. if you look

  1870. at a documentary

  1871. of like when

  1872. a tsunami

  1873. has gone

  1874. through

  1875. or if you

  1876. look at a

  1877. documentary

  1878. or movie

  1879. where there's

  1880. been a huge

  1881. war or

  1882. earthquakes

  1883. or you look

  1884. at the

  1885. tornado

  1886. stuff like

  1887. that

  1888. we can all

  1889. tell the

  1890. difference

  1891. between when

  1892. there's been

  1893. something like

  1894. a tornado

  1895. and there's

  1896. just a pile

  1897. of rubbish

  1898. the winds

  1899. have just

  1900. picked things

  1901. up

  1902. helter

  1903. skelter

  1904. higgledy

  1905. piggledy

  1906. thrown them

  1907. in a thing

  1908. and it's

  1909. just a big

  1910. jumble

  1911. you can all

  1912. tell the

  1913. difference

  1914. between that

  1915. without

  1916. with very

  1917. rarely

  1918. making a

  1919. stake

  1920. and between

  1921. something

  1922. which has

  1923. now been

  1924. damaged

  1925. and ruined

  1926. there's a

  1927. difference

  1928. between what

  1929. the forces

  1930. of nature

  1931. create

  1932. which is

  1933. just a

  1934. jumble

  1935. of chaos

  1936. and what

  1937. human beings

  1938. design

  1939. and now

  1940. maybe due

  1941. to the

  1942. stress of

  1943. the wind

  1944. or over

  1945. time

  1946. if you're

  1947. watching

  1948. science fiction

  1949. things

  1950. or fantasy

  1951. things

  1952. are now

  1953. like ruins

  1954. starting to

  1955. crumble

  1956. you can see

  1957. the design

  1958. and you can

  1959. see the

  1960. design

  1961. you can see

  1962. that human

  1963. beings

  1964. aren't a

  1965. jumble

  1966. there's a

  1967. very interesting

  1968. book by

  1969. Eric Metaxas

  1970. that came out

  1971. just about a

  1972. month ago

  1973. called

  1974. Is Atheism

  1975. Dead

  1976. and the title

  1977. which I don't

  1978. think is the

  1979. world's greatest

  1980. title but it's a

  1981. play on words

  1982. to the famous

  1983. time magazine

  1984. cover in 1966

  1985. that is God

  1986. is dead

  1987. and the interesting

  1988. thing that he does

1989. time and time and time

  1990. and time again

  1991. throughout the book

  1992. is he shows from

  1993. science and from

  1994. archaeology how

  1995. things have developed

  1996. since 1966

  1997. and the fact

  1998. the matter

  1999. is is that

  2000. every week

  2001. every week

  2002. every month

  2003. every year

  2004. the evidence

  2005. of design

  2006. of human

  2007. beings

  2008. goes up

  2009. like this

  2010. and the

  2011. possibility

  2012. of randomness

  2013. is going

  2014. down like

  2015. this

  2016. when

  2017. Darwin

  2018. developed

  2019. his theory

  2020. of naturalistic

  2021. evolution

  2022. fundamentally

  2023. they thought

  2024. a cell

  2025. was just

  2026. sort of

  2027. like a

  2028. little bit

  2029. of jello

  2030. covered

  2031. in a

  2032. pouch

  2033. like in

  2034. a pouch

  2035. now

  2036. you study

  2037. the life

  2038. of a

  2039. cell

  2040. the more

  2041. they study

  2042. and understand

  2043. about the

  2044. cell

  2045. the more

  2046. it is

  2047. unbelievably

  2048. complex

  2049. and designed

  2050. the more

  2051. they know

  2052. about the

  2053. universe

  2054. the fact

  2055. that our

  2056. life wouldn't

  2057. exist

  2058. if the moon

  2059. wasn't the

  2060. exact size

  2061. it was

  2062. in the exact

  2063. distance

  2064. from us

  2065. it goes on

  2066. and on

  2067. if we weren't

  2068. in this

  2069. obscure

  2070. corner of

  2071. the galaxy

  2072. all these

  2073. things

  2074. and then

  2075. in human

  2076. beings

  2077. and not

  2078. just human

  2079. beings

  2080. at a

  2081. scientific

  2082. biological

  2083. physical

  2084. level

  2085. and environmental

  2086. level

  2087. but also

  2088. the way

  2089. that we're

  2090. social

  2091. the way

  2092. that

  2093. the way

  2094. that we're

  2095. formed

  2096. the way

  2097. that

  2098. the longings

  2099. and the

  2100. yearnings

  2101. of our

  2102. heart

  2103. there's

  2104. all this

  2105. idea

  2106. that we're

  2107. designed

  2108. but also

  2109. that there's

  2110. something

  2111. broken

  2112. about us

  2113. which is

  2114. why I said

  2115. that every

  2116. single human

  2117. being

  2118. is sexually

  2119. broken

  2120. every single

  2121. one of us

  2122. are ruined

  2123. our sexuality

  2124. is part

  2125. ruin

  2126. you see

  2127. here's the

  2128. wonderful thing

  2129. about the

  2130. gospel

  2131. the bible

  2132. doesn't just

  2133. sort of

  2134. leave us

  2135. there

  2136. to help

  2137. us to

  2138. encourage

  2139. to understand

  2140. that we

  2141. are designed

  2142. I mean

  2143. on one

  2144. level

  2145. if you're

  2146. honest

  2147. about the

  2148. longings

  2149. and yearnings

  2150. of your

  2151. heart

  2152. the idea

  2153. that love

  2154. has designed

  2155. you

  2156. for to

  2157. love

  2158. and to be

  2159. loved

  2160. is both

  2161. something

  2162. which is

  2163. incredibly

  2164. that draws

  2165. you

  2166. but also

  2167. is incredibly

  2168. frightening

  2169. because

  2170. every one

  2171. of us

  2172. have been

  2173. let down

  2174. by love

  2175. and life

  2176. and some

  2177. of you

  2178. some of

  2179. us

  2180. have been

  2181. terribly

  2182. terribly

  2183. terribly

  2184. terribly

  2185. broken

  2186. and

  2187. experienced

  2188. hatred

  2189. rather than

  2190. love

  2191. from people

  2192. who really

  2193. should have

  2194. loved you

  2195. and so

  2196. to hear

  2197. this is

  2198. both

  2199. something

  2200. which is

  2201. both

  2202. very

  2203. very

  2204. there's

  2205. a tug

  2206. of longing

  2207. but at

  2208. this

  2209. sometime

  2210. a tug

  2211. of fear

  2212. the Bible

  2213. provides

  2214. this

  2215. profoundly

  2216. good

  2217. news

  2218. look at

  2219. what it

  2220. continues

  2221. to say

  2222. in verses

  2223. 11 and

  2224. following

  2225. besides

  2226. this

  2227. you know

  2228. the time

  2229. that the

  2230. hour has

  2231. come for

  2232. you to

  2233. wake

  2234. from

  2235. sleep

  2236. for

  2237. salvation

  2238. is

  2239. nearer

  2240. to us

  2241. now

  2242. than

  2243. when

  2244. we

  2245. first

  2246. believed

  2247. the

  2248. night

  2249. is

  2250. far

  2251. gone

  2252. the

  2253. day

  2254. is

  2255. at

  2256. hand

  2257. so

  2258. then

  2259. let

  2260. us

  2261. cast

  2262. off

  2263. the

  2264. works

  2265. of

  2266. darkness

  2267. and

  2268. put

  2269. upon

  2270. us

  2271. the

  2272. arm

  2273. of

  2274. light

  2275. see

  2276. the

  2277. way

  2278. the

  2279. book

  2280. of

  2281. Romans

  2282. is

  2283. written

  2284. is

  2285. actually

  2286. there's

  2287. a bit

  2288. of an

  2289. introduction

  2290. for I think

  2291. the first

  2292. 15 verses

  2293. then verse

  2294. 16 and

  2295. 17

  2296. it's almost

  2297. as if

  2298. they give

  2299. a

  2300. praise

  2301. of what

  2302. the

  2303. whole

  2304. book

  2305. is

  2306. going

  2307. to be

  2308. about

  2309. then

  2310. verses

  2311. 18

  2312. to

  2313. halfway

  2314. through

  2315. chapter

  2316. 3

  2317. is

  2318. just

  2319. telling

  2320. you

  2321. the

  2322. problem

  2323. of us

  2324. being

  2325. not

  2326. able

  2327. to

  2328. save

  2329. ourselves

  2330. that

  2331. we're

  2332. broken

  2333. there's

  2334. something

  2335. bent

  2336. about

  2337. us

  2338. there's

  2339. something

  2340. ruined

  2341. about

  2342. us

  2343. and

  2344. that

  2345. what

  2346. we

  2347. do

  2348. is

  2349. ruined

  2350. and

  2351. ruinous

  2352. and

  2353. that

  2354. we

  2355. can't

  2356. save

  2357. ourselves

  2358. and

  2359. then

  2360. from

  2361. the

  2362. last

  2363. half

  2364. of

  2365. chapter

  2366. 3

  2367. up

  2368. to

  2369. chapter

  2370. 11

  2371. it

  2372. is

  2373. a

  2374. glorious

  2375. constant

  2376. exposition

  2377. of how

  2378. God

  2379. has done

  2380. something

  2381. in the

  2382. person

  2383. of

  2384. his

  2385. son

  2386. to

  2387. rescue

  2388. and

  2389. restore

  2390. people

  2391. who

  2392. cannot

  2393. rescue

  2394. and

  2395. restore

  2396. themselves

  2397. that

  2398. it's

  2399. all

  2400. been

  2401. done

  2402. by

  2403. Jesus

  2404. that

  2405. it's

  2406. not

  2407. just

  2408. something

  2409. happenstance

  2410. that

  2411. before

  2412. you

  2413. even

  2414. thought

  2415. of

  2416. Jesus

  2417. he

  2418. thought

  2419. of

  2420. you

  2421. before

  2422. you

  2423. started

  2424. to

  2425. think

  2426. of

  2427. going

  2428. towards

  2429. Jesus

  2430. he

  2431. was

  2432. calling

  2433. you

  2434. that

  2435. Holy

  2436. Spirit

  2437. was

  2438. moving

  2439. in

  2440. your

  2441. life

  2442. to

  2443. draw

  2444. you

  2445. to

  2446. Jesus

  2447. and

  2448. when

  2449. he

  2450. draws

  2451. you

  2452. to

  2453. Jesus

  2454. you

  2455. put

  2456. your

  2457. faith

  2458. and

  2459. trust

  2460. in

  2461. him

  2462. and

  2463. that

  2464. everything

  2465. that

  2466. had

  2467. to

  2468. be

  2469. done

  2470. to

  2471. make

  2472. you

  2473. right

  2474. with

  2475. God

  2476. was

  2477. done

  2478. by

  2479. him

  2480. that

  2481. you

  2482. receive

  2483. what

  2484. love

  2485. and

  2486. if

  2487. you

  2488. could

  2489. put

  2490. it

  2491. up

  2492. in

  2493. love

  2494. he

  2495. came

  2496. to

  2497. save

  2498. you

  2499. in

  2500. love

  2501. he

  2502. walks

  2503. with

  2504. you

  2505. in

  2506. love

  2507. he

  2508. will

  2509. come

  2510. to

  2511. save

  2512. you

  2513. in

  2514. the

  2515. whole

  2516. earth

  2517. and

  2518. bring

  2519. into

  2520. you

  2521. to

  2522. live

  2523. and

  2524. live

  2525. there

  2526. MARK

  2527. is

  2528. ischen

  2529. the ruins.

  2530. He lives

  2531. among the ruins.

  2532. He redeems the ruins.

2533. And one day, even the

2534. most ruined who have put their

2535. faith and trust in Jesus

2536. in the new heaven and the new earth,

  2537. well,

  2538. they, you, will be

2539. if we saw you on this

  2540. side of the grave

2541. we couldn't look at you for your glory.

  2542. We'd want

2543. to worship you because we're

  2544. idolaters.

2545. Our eyes couldn't stand the brightness.

2546. When God, the Son of God, who made

2547. you and designed you to love

  2548. and to be loved,

  2549. redeems you in love

  2550. and restores your ruins

2551. and not just restores, but

2552. amps it up to a whole other key

2553. and level that for the rest

2554. of eternity, you go farther up

  2555. and farther in,

2556. into the glory of who

2557. he created you to be

  2558. and the glorious creation

2559. that you were meant to live in,

  2560. where for all eternity

2561. you will bask in the love

2562. of the triune God for you

  2563. and you will respond

2564. with love to the triune God

2565. and not only to other

2566. human beings, but to all

  2567. of creation,

  2568. that all of creation

2569. will be seen to be in love,

  2570. from love, for love,

  2571. to be loved,

2572. in a love that will never end

2573. or ever come to a rest,

  2574. and where every day

2575. is better than the day before,

2576. and it will be hard to imagine

2577. how the day to come

  2578. will be even better

2579. than the day to be,

2580. but when we wake to that new day,

2581. that new day will be even better

2582. and greater than the day that was,

2583. and the day to be

  2584. will be greater still,

  2585. everlastingly.

2586. This text is telling us

2587. that what we now live in

  2588. is the night

  2589. that Jesus will return,

2590. and it's when he returns

2591. that the day will finally have dawned.

2592. You could put up verse 13,

  2593. actually verse 12 again,

2594. the night is far gone,

2595. the day is at hand,

2596. so then let us cast off

  2597. the works of darkness

2598. and put upon on the armor of light.

  2599. Let us walk properly

  2600. as in the daytime,

  2601. not in carousing,

2602. which is better than orgies

  2603. and drunkenness,

2604. not in porneia and sensuality.

  2605. Sensuality means sexualizing

  2606. all of life,

2607. not in quarreling and jealousy,

2608. but put on the Lord Jesus Christ

  2609. and make no provisions

  2610. for the flesh

  2611. to gratify its desires.

2612. If you could put up

  2613. the final point

  2614. as we close,

  2615. gripped by the gospel,

2616. cast off your works of darkness,

2617. put on the armor of light,

2618. walk in the dying of the night

2619. to the glory of God

2620. and the good of people.

  2621. It's really funny

  2622. to read nerdy commentators

2623. as they try to struggle

  2624. with this idea

2625. of putting on the armor of light,

  2626. but anybody who's watched

  2627. a superhero movie,

  2628. anybody who's read a fantasy

  2629. or science fiction novel,

  2630. we understand it intuitively.

2631. when you take the sword

  2632. out of the stone,

  2633. the sword changes you.

2634. When Aragorn gets his sword,

2635. the sword makes him more Aragorn

  2636. and makes him greater.

2637. When you get the suit

2638. and you put it on,

  2639. you become the suit.

2640. That's what the text is telling you.

  2641. It's very simple.

2642. And for those of you

  2643. with great imaginations,

2644. worry is a terrible misuse

  2645. of your imagination.

  2646. I'm preaching to myself.

  2647. Like imagine,

2648. as you wake up every day,

2649. today I'm going to take off

  2650. those things of darkness.

2651. I'm going to take off despair.

2652. I'm going to take off resentment.

2653. I'm going to take off bitterness.

2654. I'm going to take off greed.

2655. I'm going to take off

  2656. lack of generosity.

2657. I'm going to take that off

  2658. and I'm putting on

  2659. the armor of light.

  2660. I'm putting on Christ.

2661. How am I going to deal

  2662. with my temptations?

2663. I'm going to cast away

  2664. those things.

2665. I'm going to put on

  2666. the armor of light.

2667. And gripped by the gospel,

  2668. day by day,

2669. I'm going to cast off

  2670. the works of darkness.

2671. I'm going to put on

  2672. the armor of light.

2673. And I'm going to walk

2674. in the dying of the night

  2675. because that's the time

  2676. we're living in

2677. to the glory of God

2678. and the good of people.

2679. I'd like you all to stand.

2680. If you could put up

  2681. the collect again

  2682. in closing,

  2683. that would be wonderful.

  2684. In light of this

  2685. wonderful text,

  2686. let's pray together

2687. the collect for all of Advent.

  2688. Almighty God,

  2689. give us grace

2690. that we may cast away

  2691. the works of darkness

  2692. and put upon us

  2693. the armor of light.

  2694. now in the time

  2695. of this mortal life

  2696. in which your Son,

  2697. Jesus Christ,

  2698. came to visit us

  2699. in great humility,

2700. that in the last day

2701. when he shall come again

  2702. in his glorious majesty

  2703. to judge both

2704. the living and the dead,

  2705. we may rise

  2706. to the life immortal

  2707. through him

  2708. who lives and reigns

  2709. with you

  2710. and the Holy Spirit,

  2711. one God,

  2712. now and forever.

  2713. Amen.

  2714. Father,

2715. help us to put on

  2716. the armor of light.

  2717. And Father,

2718. if there are any here

  2719. who have not yet

  2720. given their lives

  2721. to Jesus,

  2722. Father,

2723. I ask that you just

  2724. help them to surrender,

  2725. to give their lives

  2726. to Christ.

  2727. We know you,

  2728. Father,

2729. that you will receive them

2730. as they turn to you,

2731. as they turn to Jesus.

  2732. Father,

2733. pour out the Holy Spirit

  2734. upon us

  2735. as we remember

  2736. your Son's death

  2737. and resurrection,

  2738. as we pray,

  2739. as we continue

  2740. to receive grace

  2741. from you together.

  2742. We ask this

  2743. in Jesus' name.

  2744. Amen.

  2745. Amen.
