  1. Today's passage is from 1 Corinthians chapter 11. We're starting in verse 17.

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  2. But in the following instructions, I do not commend you, because when you come together, it is not for the better but for the worse.

  3. For in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you.

  4. And I believe it in part, for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.

  5. When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper that you eat.

  6. For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk.

  7. What? Do you not have houses to eat and drink in?

  8. Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing?

  9. What shall I say to you?

  10. Should I commend you in this?

  11. No, I will not.

  12. For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you,

  13. that the Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread.

  14. And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said,

  15. This is my body, which is for you.

  16. Do this in remembrance of me.

  17. In the same way, also, he took the cup after supper, saying,

  18. This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

  19. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.

  20. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,

  21. you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

  22. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord

  23. in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.

  24. Let a person examine himself, then,

  25. and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

  26. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body

  27. eats and drinks judgment on himself.

  28. That is why many of you are weak and ill and some have died.

  29. But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.

  30. But when we are judged by the Lord,

  31. we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

  32. So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat,

  33. wait for one another.

  34. If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home,

  35. so that when you come together,

  36. it will not be for judgment.

  37. About the other things, I will give directions when I come.

  38. This is the word of God.

  39. Thank you so much, Karen.

  40. Good morning, everyone.

  41. Okay, that's not bad.

  42. Great. Good morning.

  43. My name is Chris.

  44. I'm one of the leaders here at Watermark,

  45. and it's just really exciting to be here

  46. and to preach God's word as we're going to talk on communion,

  47. which I don't think I have preached a sermon here at Watermark ever on communion.

  48. So let's just start by praying

  49. and asking God to just speak to us today.

  50. Father, we thank you that your word is like a sword

  51. that penetrates, that cuts between the very deepest parts of our soul

  52. and our marrow and every part of our bones,

  53. and it breaks through into areas of our lives

  54. where we have kept hidden for so long,

  55. and it wants to expose us so that it wants to heal us

  56. and to make us truly the people you've made us to be.

  57. And I pray this morning you would do that.

  58. I pray wherever we've come from, wherever we are right now,

  59. that your word would do its work in our lives

  60. so that we might be the people you've called us to be.

  61. We might live in the freedom you have bought for us,

  62. and we might enjoy what it really means to be a redeemed,

  63. loved, restored people of God who are your family together.

  64. And we pray this in Jesus' name.

  65. Amen.

  66. Great.

  67. So we're going through this series,

  68. basically a back-to-basics series,

  69. looking at why do we do what we do.

  70. And we've said that if you lose your why,

  71. then the what of what you do can become dry and lose its life.

  72. But when you know why you're doing what you do,

  73. then actually that can reinvigorate and bring freshness and life

  74. to the things that we do on a regular basis.

  75. And we've looked at why we gather on Sundays.

  76. Last week, Kevin looked at why do we always talk about the gospel?

  77. And today we're going to talk about why do we take communion?

  78. Now, kind of before I start,

  79. it's worth noting that food and meals shape culture.

  80. Because the British eat to live,

  81. but the Hong Kongers live to eat.

  82. Because actually Hong Kong's got it better,

  83. more biblical than the British actually,

  84. because food is more,

  85. and meals are more than gaining nutrients for life.

  86. They're actually about strengthening relationships,

  87. about forming identities together.

  88. They're a communal thing.

  89. You know, I've always been incredibly amazed

  90. at how my wife's extended family,

  91. at festivals, they all get together,

  92. and at these restaurants,

  93. where the food quality is really poor,

  94. the service is terrible,

  95. and yet they love it.

  96. And it's overpriced as well.

  97. Why? Because what's happening

  98. is it's strengthening their sense of being a family together.

  99. And when families stop eating together,

  100. that's always a sign of dysfunction

  101. in their relationships, right?

  102. We know that.

  103. Because who you eat with

  104. displays who you identify with.

  105. It displays where your loyalty is

  106. and where your allegiance is.

  107. And so this passage,

  108. let me just talk a little bit about

  109. the context of the passage

  110. that we're looking at today in Corinth.

  111. Because in the ancient world,

  112. the meal tables you had,

  113. eating was a chance to network.

  114. It was a chance to get into certain social circles.

  115. A chance to get benefits.

  116. You know, like in mainland,

  117. if you want to get some business deals,

  118. you'll eat together and drink together

  119. and form guanxi, won't you?

  120. To be able to form those relationships.

  121. Well, the same would happen in ancient world.

  122. And often meals would take place at pagan temples

  123. where the food was devoted to idols.

  124. And Paul has already talked about this

  125. in the book of Corinthians

  126. because their meals in the world around them

  127. were often self-serving,

  128. they were self-indulgent,

  129. and they were idolatrous.

  130. And in Corinth,

  131. many of the new Christians

  132. who'd come out of that

  133. were bringing the same thinking

  134. of the pagan world into the church.

  135. And here was a church made up,

  136. this house church of about 15

  137. to maybe 50 people maximum,

  138. made up of rich and poor

  139. who would gather together

  140. and be hosted in the home

  141. of a wealthy person.

  142. I think we might have a,

  143. do we have a picture?

  144. Okay, here's a picture.

  145. Of a kind of home

  146. that they found in Corinth

  147. of a wealthy person.

  148. And what would happen is

  149. the rich people,

  150. they didn't need to work

  151. so they would come early

  152. and they'd get seated

  153. in the kind of seated area

  154. and there'd be nice food,

  155. that would be served to them

  156. and there'd be free-flown wine.

  157. And it was a great time,

  158. it was a party for them,

  159. catching up with all their

  160. kind of wealthy friends.

  161. And then the slaves

  162. and the lower classes

  163. would come later

  164. because they got off work

  165. and then there'd be nowhere

  166. for them to sit

  167. so they'd just be

  168. standing room only.

  169. There'd be no food left for them

  170. so they'd be hungry.

  171. And all the time

  172. then they'd have

  173. their worship gathering together

  174. where they were talking

  175. about Jesus,

  176. praying about Jesus,

  177. they were taking communion together

  178. and Paul basically

  179. lays into them,

  180. he's got pretty strong language

  181. in this passage,

  182. and he says three times,

  183. when you come together,

  184. guys,

  185. and that's a technical term

  186. for when you meet

  187. as a church,

  188. when you gather together,

  189. he says firstly,

  190. you can go back

  191. to that slide,

  192. firstly,

  193. you actually do more harm

  194. than good.

  195. It's not for better,

  196. it's for worse.

  197. Secondly,

  198. he says,

  199. it looks more like

  200. Lan Kui Fong

  201. than the church of God.

  202. Your divisions

  203. between the haves

  204. and the have-nots

  205. reflect more your loyalty

  206. to the way the world operates

  207. than to the people of God

  208. that God has created.

  209. And he said,

  210. thirdly,

  211. in light of those two things,

  212. when you come together,

  213. it's not the Lord's Supper

  214. you're taking

  215. because your own behavior

  216. is despising

  217. the very people

  218. Christ died

  219. to bring into his family.

  220. And he says this,

  221. he says,

  222. for in eating,

  223. each of you goes ahead

  224. with his own meal.

  225. One goes hungry,

  226. the other gets drunk.

  227. What?

  228. I mean,

  229. I like how Karen said it.

  230. What?

  231. Can you see,

  232. he's not a happy bunny

  233. at this point.

  234. What?

  235. Don't you have houses

  236. to eat and drink in?

  237. If you want to have

  238. a private party,

  239. do it in your own time.

  240. Don't despise

  241. the church of God

  242. and humiliate

  243. those who have nothing.

  244. What's he saying?

  245. He's saying,

  246. it is possible

  247. to make a mockery

  248. out of communion

  249. if you don't get

  250. what it's all about.

  251. That's the point.

  252. It's possible

  253. to make a mockery

  254. out of communion

  255. if you don't understand

  256. what it's about.

  257. And so what I want us to do

  258. is just go through,

  259. firstly,

  260. what is communion?

  261. Okay?

  262. Very briefly.

  263. And then we'll look at

  264. why we take communion

  265. and then how

  266. we are to take communion.

  267. Because in verses 23 to 26,

  268. Paul basically goes

  269. back to basics

  270. and says,

  271. okay,

  272. let me show you

  273. what communion is.

  274. Let me take you back

  275. to the first communion

  276. Lord's Supper meal

  277. that Jesus instituted

  278. and he says,

  279. I received from the Lord

  280. what I delivered to you

  281. and he's then going to go on

  282. and tell us about the meal.

  283. But what's he saying?

  284. Just spin this phrase.

  285. He's saying communion

  286. is not a man-made ritual.

  287. It's not like a shot of grace

  288. that's just infused

  289. into you in some way.

  290. It is a practice

  291. that is commanded by Jesus.

  292. And if Jesus commanded it

  293. to his church

  294. to be handed down

  295. from generation

  296. to generation

  297. of believers,

  298. you've got to believe

  299. that this is important.

  300. And just as we depend

  301. on food and drink

  302. to live.

  303. So what communion

  304. is proclaiming?

  305. It is a tangible,

  306. tasted proclamation

  307. declaring that our very lives

  308. and our community life

  309. is entirely dependent

  310. on Jesus.

  311. Entirely shaped

  312. by Jesus' life,

  313. his death,

  314. and his resurrection.

  315. It proclaims

  316. the Lord's death

  317. and that's a catch-all

  318. for the gospel.

  319. That's what communion is.

  320. It's a proclamation.

  321. It's a proclamation

  322. of Jesus

  323. and all that he is

  324. and that we depend on him.

  325. So why do we take communion?

  326. Like, what's the big deal?

  327. Okay, it's a bit of bread,

  328. it's a bit of wine.

  329. Well, the main reason

  330. that he gives here

  331. is to celebrate Jesus.

  332. And we're going to unpack this

  333. in a little bit.

  334. But it's to celebrate Jesus.

  335. Here's what he says.

  336. The Lord Jesus,

  337. on the night when he was betrayed,

  338. took bread.

  339. When he'd given thanks,

  340. he broke it

  341. and he said,

  342. this is my body,

  343. which is for you.

  344. Do this in remembrance

  345. of me.

  346. In the same way,

  347. he took the cup

  348. after Sava,

  349. saying,

  350. this is the new covenant

  351. in my blood.

  352. Do this as often

  353. as you drink it

  354. in remembrance

  355. of me.

  356. You see,

  357. the Corinthians

  358. had made the whole meal

  359. about themselves

  360. and they were

  361. the host of the meal.

  362. Basically,

  363. they did things their way.

  364. But in the Lord's Supper,

  365. Jesus is the host

  366. of the meal.

  367. And you notice in here,

  368. who's doing all the action?

  369. It's Jesus.

  370. Jesus,

  371. he gave thanks.

  372. Jesus broke the bread.

  373. He is the one

  374. who offers himself

  375. to us

  376. in the bread

  377. and wine.

  378. You see,

  379. it's personal.

  380. It's not just abstract.

  381. It's personal

  382. from Jesus

  383. to us,

  384. to the original disciples

  385. and then to us.

  386. And so that means

  387. how we respond

  388. to communion

  389. is how we respond

  390. to Jesus.

  391. And how do we respond?

  392. Well, he says,

  393. we're called

  394. to do this

  395. communion thing

  396. in remembrance

  397. of him.

  398. Now,

  399. that's a strange thing

  400. to say,

  401. in remembrance,

  402. because in the Bible,

  403. to forget

  404. doesn't mean

  405. to go,

  406. like to forget

  407. some information.

  408. Go,

  409. Jesus,

  410. yeah,

  411. that kind of name

  412. rings a bell.

  413. That's not what

  414. forget means.

  415. Forget means

  416. you turn in your heart

  417. away from God.

  418. That's what it means

  419. biblically.

  420. And so then,

  421. to remember Jesus

  422. is not to go,

  423. oh yeah,

  424. Jesus,

  425. he died for me.

  426. It's actually

  427. to recall his life,

  428. his death,

  429. and resurrection

  430. for the purpose

  431. of celebrating

  432. and rekindling

  433. your love for him.

  434. You know,

  435. I had an elderly

  436. friend once

  437. who,

  438. she had this little

  439. pendant with her,

  440. you know,

  441. around her neck,

  442. which had her

  443. and her husband's

  444. picture in it.

  445. And she would

  446. take it out

  447. and every time

  448. she'd recall

  449. the memories

  450. of her and her

  451. husband together.

  452. And as she did,

  453. you could see

  454. her face

  455. kind of light up.

  456. And that remembrance

  457. warmed her heart

  458. to her husband

  459. and his love

  460. for her

  461. and it actually

  462. strengthened

  463. their marriage bond

  464. in some kind of way.

  465. We know that

  466. when you rehearse

  467. with like an old friend

  468. and you go back

  469. over the stories

  470. and something,

  471. it just carries

  472. that bond together.

  473. Well,

  474. in some kind

  475. of similar way,

  476. when we take communion,

  477. what it's meant to do

  478. as we intentionally

  479. recall how Jesus

  480. has loved us,

  481. you know,

  482. you're meant to

  483. intentionally do that.

  484. It's meant to warm

  485. your heart

  486. and strengthen

  487. your love for him.

  488. You know,

  489. one of the things

  490. I do,

  491. often before I take communion,

  492. I recall how

  493. I was in a period

  494. of real darkness

  495. for about four years

  496. of my life

  497. and Jesus brought me

  498. out of that.

  499. And a lot of that

  500. was because of

  501. my own sinfulness.

  502. And as I stop

  503. and think about that

  504. and I think,

  505. but Jesus died

  506. even for me,

  507. that then

  508. refreshes

  509. and makes me

  510. delight again

  511. and say,

  512. wow,

  513. isn't Jesus'

  514. love incredible?

  515. That's what it's

  516. meant to do for us.

  517. Because in a world

  518. of performance

  519. and a world

  520. of busyness,

  521. we often forget

  522. his love,

  523. don't we?

  524. So it's to remember

  525. Jesus,

  526. to celebrate him

  527. and to enjoy him

  528. again.

  529. But how do we do that?

  530. What else are we

  531. trying to remember

  532. about Jesus

  533. and what he's

  534. done for us?

  535. Well,

  536. there's three things

  537. that I think

  538. we are to celebrate.

  539. Firstly,

  540. we're to celebrate

  541. that Jesus died

  542. to set us free.

  543. I don't know if you know

  544. this meal.

  545. Who did the Seder meal

  546. on Easter Thursday

  547. with us?

  548. Okay,

  549. a few of you.

  550. Some of you need to go

  551. back next year

  552. and do it again.

  553. It was a great time.

  554. But actually,

  555. we celebrated

  556. that kind of Passover meal.

  557. It's a Passover meal

  558. that Jesus celebrated

  559. on that Lord's Supper.

  560. And that Passover meal

  561. was a remembrance,

  562. a recalling

  563. of how God

  564. had rescued

  565. his people

  566. out of slavery

  567. in Egypt

  568. and brought them

  569. into the Promised Land.

  570. And Jesus

  571. and his disciples

  572. on that evening,

  573. they recounted

  574. the Exodus story

  575. and they would say

  576. as part of that,

  577. we were slaves

  578. and God

  579. brought us out.

  580. And you go,

  581. hey,

  582. but you guys

  583. weren't there.

  584. Like,

  585. this was like

  586. 1,500 years

  587. before Jesus

  588. and his disciples.

  589. But they themselves,

  590. as every Jew

  591. since has always done,

  592. they see themselves

  593. in the story

  594. of God's deliverance.

  595. Not just a past story,

  596. but it's a present story

  597. for now.

  598. It's their story

  599. prayed out

  600. in real time.

  601. Which means this,

  602. they would break

  603. the bread

  604. and they say,

  605. this is the bread

  606. of affliction.

  607. All who are hungry

  608. take and eat

  609. and celebrate

  610. God's deliverance

  611. for us.

  612. But what does Jesus do?

  613. He breaks the bread.

  614. He changes

  615. the narrative.

  616. He says,

  617. this is

  618. my body

  619. which is broken

  620. for you.

  621. That you

  622. is plural

  623. by the way.

  624. It's his people.

  625. But as part

  626. of his people,

  627. it's also personal

  628. for every single

  629. one of us.

  630. He's saying,

  631. I died

  632. to set you free.

  633. I died

  634. for your freedom.

  635. That's not freedom

  636. from Egypt.

  637. It's not freedom

  638. from life's difficult

  639. circumstances.

  640. It's not freedom

  641. for you to do you.

  642. It's freedom

  643. from the cramped world

  644. of living for yourself

  645. and your own self-glory

  646. and self-reliance

  647. and focusing on yourself

  648. and being set free

  649. so that you can live

  650. in the spacious place

  651. which is living

  652. for God's glory

  653. and learning to love

  654. others more than yourself

  655. and to find that

  656. there is true life

  657. found in him

  658. no matter what

  659. the circumstances

  660. you're going through.

  661. And so when you

  662. come to communion

  663. and maybe you're feeling

  664. like,

  665. will I ever break free

  666. of this anger

  667. or this selfishness

  668. or this lack

  669. of self-control

  670. or this habit

  671. that has enslaved me?

  672. When you take

  673. those elements

  674. you're proclaiming

  675. one thing in that.

  676. You're proclaiming

  677. that Jesus died

  678. to set me free

  679. from all of these things

  680. and he will set me free

  681. because he's moving me

  682. on a road to freedom

  683. and I can trust him.

  684. That's the first thing

  685. that communion

  686. reminds us on.

  687. He's died to set us free.

  688. The second thing

  689. he tells us

  690. we celebrate

  691. that he made us

  692. his own people.

  693. I love this part

  694. because if you get

  695. the story

  696. of what's going on

  697. God didn't just

  698. bring his people

  699. out of Egypt

  700. for them just to

  701. kind of wander

  702. by themselves

  703. in the wilderness.

  704. He rescues them

  705. from slavery

  706. to bring them

  707. to himself

  708. and then he takes

  709. them to this mountain

  710. Mount Sinai

  711. where he enters

  712. into a covenant

  713. relationship

  714. with the people

  715. there.

  716. It's like a marriage

  717. ceremony

  718. and if you remember

  719. the Ten Commandments

  720. they start with

  721. you remember

  722. the Lord your God

  723. rescued you

  724. out of the house

  725. of slavery

  726. and then you've got

  727. actually about

  728. 613 commandments

  729. that kind of come

  730. as part of this

  731. covenant

  732. and then at the end

  733. of it most of what

  734. people don't realize

  735. in Exodus 24

  736. is it's actually

  737. a kind of

  738. a ratification

  739. ceremony.

  740. There's a ceremony

  741. where Moses

  742. sprinkles blood

  743. on the people

  744. which was a sign

  745. that if they broke

  746. the covenant

  747. commands

  748. then they should

  749. pay for that

  750. with their own blood.

  751. And then what happens

  752. it says the elders

  753. went up

  754. and it says

  755. they beheld God

  756. and they ate

  757. and drank.

  758. Do you see

  759. what's happened?

  760. They had a meal.

  761. They celebrated

  762. their new identity

  763. that now

  764. they were kind of

  765. married as God's people

  766. to the creator

  767. of the universe

  768. and God

  769. is the host

  770. of the meal.

  771. I mean wouldn't

  772. you love to be

  773. a fly on the wall

  774. of that meal

  775. right?

  776. I wonder what

  777. he served.

  778. But in light

  779. of all that

  780. background

  781. Jesus

  782. picks up

  783. the cup

  784. and he says

  785. this cup

  786. is the new

  787. covenant

  788. in my blood.

  789. This is actually

  790. amazing

  791. because the entire

  792. Old Testament

  793. story is a tragedy

  794. telling you

  795. that the people

  796. of God

  797. broke his covenant

  798. not just once

  799. not just twice

  800. but like every

  801. almost all the time

  802. constantly

  803. time after time

  804. they forgot

  805. their God

  806. they turned

  807. to idols

  808. and their blood

  809. should have been

  810. demanded from them

  811. because that was

  812. the deal

  813. that would have

  814. been fair

  815. that would have

  816. been justice

  817. that God

  818. would bring

  819. and actually

  820. the story

  821. says we are

  822. no different

  823. but Jesus

  824. is saying

  825. to sinners

  826. God doesn't

  827. write us off

  828. God doesn't

  829. say that's it

  830. you've had your

  831. chance

  832. I'm just going

  833. to move on

  834. now

  835. our failure

  836. reveals the

  837. depths of

  838. his faithfulness

  839. to us

  840. and what that

  841. means is

  842. he creates

  843. a new

  844. covenant

  845. so that

  846. you and

  847. I and

  848. we as

  849. his people

  850. can be

  851. brought back

  852. to himself

  853. and in

  854. the new

  855. covenant

  856. he places

  857. his own

  858. blood there

  859. instead of

  860. yours

  861. that's why

  862. he dies

  863. on that

  864. cross

  865. his life

  866. is poured

  867. out

  868. for the

  869. forgiveness

  870. of your

  871. sins

  872. that Jesus

  873. paid it

  874. all

  875. all to

  876. him

  877. we owe

  878. sin

  879. your sin

  880. my sin

  881. had left

  882. a crimson

  883. stain

  884. but he

  885. washed it

  886. white as

  887. snow

  888. and he's

  889. made a new

  890. way for us

  891. to have this

  892. marriage ceremony

  893. with God

  894. again

  895. in deep

  896. intimate

  897. relationship

  898. with God

  899. do you know

  900. God actually

  901. wants a

  902. relationship

  903. with you

  904. some of us

  905. wonder

  906. communion is

  907. meant to

  908. remind you

  909. he's done

  910. everything

  911. that he's

  912. he's running

  913. to bring you

  914. back to

  915. himself

  916. but here's

  917. the thing

  918. he died

  919. to make

  920. you own

  921. but you

  922. his own

  923. but it's

  924. not just

  925. you

  926. you and

  927. Jesus

  928. in a

  929. kind of

  930. little

  931. love

  932. in

  933. okay

  934. the

  935. covenant

  936. the new

  937. covenant

  938. isn't just

  939. between

  940. God

  941. and you

  942. the new

  943. covenant

  944. is between

  945. God

  946. and his

  947. people

  948. his

  949. people

  950. so

  951. communion

  952. proclaims

  953. that Jesus

  954. death

  955. has broken

  956. down

  957. all the

  958. social

  959. all the

  960. economic

  961. all the

  962. racial

  963. all the

  964. personality

  965. divisions

  966. that were

  967. there

  968. in

  969. Corinth

  970. and we

  971. have

  972. in

  973. Hong

  974. Kong

  975. right

  976. now

  977. to

  978. create

  979. and to

  980. bring

  981. us

  982. together

  983. as

  984. his

  985. family

  986. so your

  987. worth

  988. and value

  989. in this

  990. community

  991. is not

  992. determined

  993. by your

  994. titles

  995. or your

  996. status

  997. or your

  998. education

  999. or your

  1000. clothing

  1001. or your

  1002. charisma

  1003. it's not

  1004. determined

  1005. by any

  1006. of that

  1007. it's only

  1008. determined

  1009. by one

  1010. thing

  1011. and one

  1012. thing

  1013. only

  1014. and that

  1015. is

  1016. Jesus

  1017. blood

  1018. we all

  1019. it's the

  1020. most democratic

  1021. thing in

  1022. the world

  1023. we all

  1024. come

  1025. leveled

  1026. on the

  1027. playing

  1028. field

  1029. because

  1030. there's

  1031. only one

  1032. way we

  1033. can come

  1034. it's

  1035. through

  1036. him

  1037. that's

  1038. actually

  1039. why you're

  1040. sitting next

  1041. to each

  1042. other

  1043. I don't

  1044. know if

  1045. you realize

  1046. that

  1047. because

  1048. communion

  1049. is like

  1050. a marriage

  1051. renewal

  1052. ceremony

  1053. it's like

  1054. a renewal

  1055. of your

  1056. marriage

  1057. vows

  1058. celebrating

  1059. how Jesus

  1060. has made

  1061. us his

  1062. own

  1063. people

  1064. again

  1065. we are

  1066. his

  1067. bride

  1068. he is

  1069. the

  1070. heavenly

  1071. husband

  1072. that's

  1073. actually

  1074. why you

  1075. can't

  1076. take

  1077. communion

  1078. by

  1079. yourself

  1080. that's

  1081. a

  1082. snack

  1083. because

  1084. communion

  1085. is a

  1086. family

  1087. meal

  1088. now can

  1089. I be

  1090. real

  1091. just for

  1092. a minute

  1093. here

  1094. I just

  1095. thought about

  1096. this quite

  1097. a bit

  1098. because

  1099. what I

  1100. think

  1101. most of

  1102. us at

  1103. Watermark

  1104. do

  1105. including

  1106. myself

  1107. at times

  1108. is when

  1109. we take

  1110. communion

  1111. we will

  1112. today

  1113. what we

  1114. do is

  1115. we'll

  1116. kind of

  1117. line up

  1118. like

  1119. no eye

  1120. contact

  1121. we kind

  1122. of look

  1123. forward

  1124. go and

  1125. get the

  1126. elements

  1127. go back

  1128. to my

  1129. seat

  1130. and it's

  1131. just me

  1132. and Jesus

  1133. in this

  1134. beautiful

  1135. kind of

  1136. communion

  1137. of one

  1138. how is

  1139. that a

  1140. communal

  1141. meal

  1142. that's

  1143. individualism

  1144. now there's

  1145. a moment

  1146. for you

  1147. and Jesus

  1148. and we'll

  1149. talk about

  1150. that in a

  1151. minute

  1152. but no

  1153. what you're

  1154. supposed to

  1155. do

  1156. is look

  1157. around you

  1158. you're

  1159. supposed to

  1160. look around

  1161. not just

  1162. in like

  1163. oh let me

  1164. find my

  1165. friends

  1166. but you're

  1167. supposed to

  1168. look around

  1169. and go

  1170. wow

  1171. isn't it

  1172. incredible

  1173. that I get

  1174. to sit

  1175. next to

  1176. this person

  1177. and that

  1178. person

  1179. they're in

  1180. the family

  1181. they're my

  1182. family

  1183. and you go

  1184. and you look

  1185. over and you

  1186. look at

  1187. he even

  1188. brought an

  1189. Australian like

  1190. Dan

  1191. into his

  1192. people

  1193. wow

  1194. isn't his

  1195. love way

  1196. more expansive

  1197. than mine

  1198. I don't know

  1199. why we always

  1200. pick on

  1201. Australians

  1202. I think

  1203. they've just

  1204. got thicker

  1205. skin than

  1206. everyone else

  1207. right

  1208. and communion

  1209. is meant to

  1210. not just

  1211. rekindle your

  1212. love for

  1213. Jesus

  1214. it's meant

  1215. to rekindle

  1216. the amazement

  1217. and your

  1218. love for his

  1219. church and his

  1220. people

  1221. did you know

  1222. that

  1223. that means

  1224. we need to

  1225. start thinking

  1226. and doing

  1227. communion

  1228. differently

  1229. in our

  1230. hearts and

  1231. our minds

  1232. hearts and

  1233. because we

  1234. are God's

  1235. covenant

  1236. people

  1237. together

  1238. so we

  1239. celebrate

  1240. that Jesus

  1241. died to set

  1242. us free

  1243. we celebrate

  1244. he died to

  1245. make us his

  1246. own people

  1247. thirdly

  1248. under why do

  1249. we celebrate

  1250. he died so

  1251. that we can

  1252. celebrate

  1253. that he is

  1254. also resurrected

  1255. and he's coming

  1256. again to

  1257. restore all

  1258. things

  1259. you see

  1260. he says

  1261. this in

  1262. verse 26

  1263. he says

  1264. as often

  1265. as you

  1266. eat this

  1267. bread

  1268. and drink

  1269. the cup

  1270. you proclaim

  1271. the Lord's

  1272. death

  1273. until he

  1274. comes

  1275. you know

  1276. in Corinth

  1277. in the Roman

  1278. Empire

  1279. many meal

  1280. tables

  1281. many gatherings

  1282. would at some

  1283. point have to

  1284. proclaim

  1285. Caesar

  1286. the Roman

  1287. Emperor

  1288. is Lord

  1289. when the

  1290. church

  1291. gathered

  1292. in their

  1293. homes

  1294. they were

  1295. doing

  1296. something

  1297. utterly

  1298. revolutionary

  1299. they were

  1300. proclaiming

  1301. Jesus was

  1302. a king

  1303. of a

  1304. different

  1305. kind

  1306. of

  1307. kingdom

  1308. and while

  1309. the world

  1310. might look

  1311. as if

  1312. it's ruled

  1313. by powerful

  1314. people

  1315. ultimately

  1316. they're all

  1317. under the

  1318. authority

  1319. of the

  1320. one who

  1321. is going

  1322. to come

  1323. back

  1324. the one

  1325. who is

  1326. going

  1327. to restore

  1328. and return

  1329. and rebuild

  1330. and bring

  1331. in his

  1332. kingdom

  1333. and so

  1334. for those

  1335. of us

  1336. who are

  1337. suffering

  1338. right now

  1339. maybe you're

  1340. hurting

  1341. maybe you're

  1342. lonely

  1343. maybe there's

  1344. just struggles

  1345. that you're

  1346. going through

  1347. for those

  1348. of us

  1349. who are

  1350. sojourners

  1351. like Kevin

  1352. talked about

  1353. you just

  1354. feel that

  1355. sense of

  1356. waiting

  1357. that sense

  1358. of restlessness

  1359. that sense

  1360. of uncertainty

  1361. with where

  1362. you are

  1363. right at

  1364. this time

  1365. in life

  1366. weighed

  1367. down by

  1368. the pressures

  1369. of the

  1370. world

  1371. around

  1372. you

  1373. communion

  1374. proclaims

  1375. that Jesus

  1376. has not

  1377. only inaugurated

  1378. a new

  1379. kingdom

  1380. but he's

  1381. going to

  1382. come in

  1383. to establish

  1384. it

  1385. and that

  1386. means your

  1387. future

  1388. is utterly

  1389. secure

  1390. that means

  1391. no believer

  1392. needs to

  1393. live with

  1394. FOMO

  1395. ever

  1396. because

  1397. Christ

  1398. has come

  1399. and you

  1400. and I

  1401. has come

  1402. and is

  1403. coming

  1404. and you

  1405. and I

  1406. are included

  1407. in that

  1408. and you

  1409. know in the

  1410. last book

  1411. of the

  1412. Bible

  1413. in the

  1414. book of

  1415. Revelation

  1416. what happens

  1417. to those

  1418. of us

  1419. who are

  1420. part of

  1421. God's

  1422. people

  1423. who have

  1424. trusted

  1425. him

  1426. through the

  1427. storms

  1428. of life

  1429. and have

  1430. held on

  1431. to Jesus

  1432. all through

  1433. it

  1434. what happens

  1435. in the

  1436. last book

  1437. of the

  1438. Bible

  1439. there's a

  1440. meal

  1441. there's a

  1442. wedding banquet

  1443. that his

  1444. people

  1445. are finally

  1446. reunited with

  1447. their husband

  1448. Christ

  1449. because communion

  1450. is just a little

  1451. taste that this

  1452. is we're looking

  1453. forward it's like

  1454. the hors d'oeuvre

  1455. before the main

  1456. meal it's like

  1457. we're looking

  1458. forward to him

  1459. coming as our

  1460. husband and

  1461. restoring all

  1462. things

  1463. communion

  1464. celebrates that

  1465. he set us

  1466. free

  1467. it celebrates

  1468. that he's

  1469. made us

  1470. his own

  1471. we're to

  1472. remember and

  1473. celebrate that

  1474. he's coming

  1475. again to

  1476. restore all

  1477. things

  1478. and so then

  1479. in the light

  1480. of all of

  1481. those things

  1482. in the light

  1483. of this

  1484. declaration

  1485. and this

  1486. proclamation

  1487. that we're

  1488. doing as

  1489. we take

  1490. communion

  1491. how should

  1492. we celebrate

  1493. how should

  1494. we take

  1495. communion

  1496. it's my

  1497. third thing

  1498. I remember

  1499. going to

  1500. Puyo

  1501. for the

  1502. first time

  1503. anyone been

  1504. to Puyo

  1505. and the

  1506. first time

  1507. I went

  1508. it was like

  1509. I was like

  1510. wow this is

  1511. amazing

  1512. there's just

  1513. the mountains

  1514. and there's

  1515. the beach

  1516. and it's

  1517. just incredible

  1518. and I spoke

  1519. to my friend

  1520. who lives

  1521. there

  1522. and I

  1523. said to

  1524. him

  1525. wow

  1526. you must

  1527. wake up

  1528. every morning

  1529. thinking

  1530. you're just

  1531. the most

  1532. luckiest

  1533. person alive

  1534. you're just

  1535. amazed

  1536. at just

  1537. living here

  1538. and he

  1539. turned around

  1540. to me

  1541. and he

  1542. said

  1543. huh

  1544. actually

  1545. I guess

  1546. I've just

  1547. got used

  1548. to it

  1549. because

  1550. you know

  1551. I've just

  1552. been here

  1553. so long

  1554. it's just

  1555. so familiar

  1556. with me

  1557. and actually

  1558. you reminding

  1559. me right now

  1560. actually is

  1561. really helpful

  1562. to remember

  1563. that actually

  1564. this is really

  1565. beautiful

  1566. because

  1567. familiarity

  1568. breeds

  1569. contempt

  1570. doesn't

  1571. it

  1572. sometimes

  1573. and I

  1574. think

  1575. and I

  1576. speak also

  1577. personally

  1578. but I

  1579. think for

  1580. many of

  1581. us

  1582. we can

  1583. be so

  1584. used to

  1585. taking

  1586. communion

  1587. that we've

  1588. lost the

  1589. wonder

  1590. of communion

  1591. I don't

  1592. know if you're

  1593. honest for a

  1594. minute

  1595. but I wonder

  1596. how many of you

  1597. actually look

  1598. forward to

  1599. coming and

  1600. taking communion

  1601. some of us

  1602. were going

  1603. oh let me

  1604. just hear the

  1605. sermon and

  1606. then we rush

  1607. out

  1608. and we don't

  1609. most of the

  1610. church's history

  1611. communion has

  1612. actually been the

  1613. center point of

  1614. the church gathering

  1615. I don't know if

  1616. you know that

  1617. the preaching is

  1618. meant to lead

  1619. you into

  1620. communion

  1621. but what that

  1622. means is

  1623. and I think

  1624. as a church

  1625. I mean I

  1626. think we

  1627. we can think

  1628. more about

  1629. how can we

  1630. change things

  1631. up to make

  1632. things fresher

  1633. I think there's

  1634. a lot of

  1635. things like that

  1636. just you know

  1637. taking just a

  1638. wafer and a

  1639. cracker you know

  1640. a cracker and a

  1641. juice it doesn't

  1642. feel like a

  1643. meal does it

  1644. doesn't even feel

  1645. like a starter

  1646. sometimes and so

  1647. there's we're

  1648. obviously fighting

  1649. against certain

  1650. things just because

1651. we have to do it

  1652. because of the

  1653. the way you know

  1654. 150 people we

  1655. can't have like a

  1656. full-blown meal

  1657. every Sunday

  1658. but in spite of

  1659. all that I think

  1660. we can still learn

  1661. how to love Jesus

  1662. more and appreciate

  1663. the wonder by not

  1664. just mindlessly

  1665. coming to

  1666. communion but

  1667. actually learning

  1668. how to have

  1669. reminders every

  1670. time we come so

  1671. this meal really

  1672. does what it's

  1673. meant to do in

  1674. our hearts and

  1675. our community

  1676. life and so

  1677. how should we

  1678. come and celebrate

  1679. communion I've got

  1680. two things first

  1681. thing we should

  1682. celebrate it

  1683. seriously not

  1684. flippantly okay

  1685. now listen to me

  1686. by seriously I

  1687. don't mean like

  1688. not smiling okay

  1689. I don't mean that

  1690. kind of seriously

  1691. okay I mean

  1692. there's there's

  1693. there's like a

  1694. weightiness to it

  1695. you know with your

  1696. wedding vows okay

  1697. even if the renewal

  1698. of your wedding

  1699. vows you you don't

  1700. just go in there

  1701. kind of lightly and

  1702. flippantly do you

1703. do you go in there

  1704. with someone going

  1705. well do you take

  1706. this this woman to

  1707. be your wife and

1708. you go well I guess

  1709. there aren't any

  1710. other better options

  1711. so why not right

  1712. that's not what you

  1713. do right you you

  1714. think about it you

  1715. prepare for it because

1716. you know that that is

  1717. a serious moment and

  1718. you're declaring

  1719. something that is

  1720. serious and Paul says

  1721. here to the

  1722. Corinthians he says

  1723. in verse 27 whoever

  1724. eats the bread or

1725. drinks the cup of the

  1726. Lord in an unworthy

  1727. manner will be guilty

  1728. concerning the body

  1729. and blood of the

  1730. Lord

  1731. do you know what

  1732. an unworthy manner

  1733. is it's it's when

  1734. you're treating Jesus

  1735. sacrifice so lightly

  1736. by the reality of

  1737. your life lived for

  1738. yourself in every

  1739. other area of your

  1740. life or you just

  1741. come and you are

  1742. treating his church

  1743. you're treating other

  1744. people with with the

  1745. contempt the

  1746. Corinthians were

  1747. treating others in

  1748. the church without

  1749. repentance without a

  1750. desire to change it

  1751. just kind of walking

1752. in and that makes a

  1753. mockery of what

  1754. Christ died to

  1755. create you know you

  1756. you don't say all I

1757. have is yours in your

  1758. wedding vow and then

  1759. just be treating your

  1760. spouse like like dirt

  1761. with no desire to

  1762. change without

  1763. consequences and God

1764. says I will not be

  1765. mocked by my people

  1766. you're serious and he

1767. ramps up the level a

1768. little bit more and we

1769. need to hear this he

  1770. says this he says

  1771. anyone who eats and

  1772. drinks without discerning

  1773. the body eats and

  1774. drinks judgment on

  1775. himself this is why

1776. many of you are weak and

1777. ill and some have died

1778. just just listen to that

1779. for a minute like let the

  1780. gravity of that sentence

1781. just sink for a minute

1782. he says you can drink

  1783. judgment on yourself and

1784. some of you are sick and

1785. you've even died because of

  1786. it

1787. some of us actually today

1788. you need to hear that

1789. because maybe your career is

1790. your God and you think you

1791. can just kind of play around

1792. with God in your own life

1793. with Christ in your own

1794. life and what he's saying

1795. here and this is I mean I

1796. was kind of a little

1797. disturbed by this but this

  1798. is what he's saying he's

1799. saying God is able to

  1800. devastate your career in

1801. one instant he's able to

  1802. devastate the most precious

1803. things that you are looking

1804. to apart from Christ in one

1805. instant not to be harsh but

1806. to wake you up to avoid you

  1807. actually facing eternal

1808. judgment in hell and so

1809. that you can come in out of

1810. slavery to self into the

1811. freedom that he died for you

1812. to bring you into it's

1813. actually his grace that wants

1814. to wake you up you know there

1815. are people in watermark who I

  1816. know that have experienced

1817. that and God is so grateful

1818. they are so grateful that God

1819. did that because they see how

1820. where their life was going you

1821. know you can say God can take

1822. away your health he can take

1823. away your relationships he can

1824. even take away your life

  1825. there's a sense of a fear of

1826. God here right and we talk

1827. about the grace of God all the

1828. time and we need to right but

1829. sometimes I think we can take

1830. that casually and we don't see

1831. the fear of God and God's

  1832. disciplining judgment for those

1833. who mock his grace and we mock

1834. his grace when we just treat

1835. him flippantly and by the way

1836. let me put a caveat here don't

1837. take this as if I've just said

1838. hey you know if you take

  1839. communion today and then

1840. tomorrow you get COVID that

1841. that's kind of the judgment of

1842. God has come on you and whatever

1843. I mean it could be but I'm not

1844. we're not going there because

1845. this is a broken world and

  1846. there's there's different

  1847. things I mean we don't be

1848. simplistic about that the point

1849. here is that communion is a

  1850. health check to examine

1851. yourself that's what Paul says

1852. examine yourself so you discern

1853. the body and by that he means

1854. you discern the body of Christ's

1855. broken few what Jesus has done

1856. for you you think about his love

1857. you ask yourself each time what

1858. has Christ done for me how am I

1859. treating him and then you think

1860. about the body of Christ which is

1861. his people and you go how are my

1862. relationships how am I treating

1863. the church around me this is what

1864. communion is meant to do it's

1865. meant to be like an ECG like a

1866. heart monitor check you know Kevin

1867. can share with me about an Anglican

1868. church in Australia where I think

1869. they said they take communion about

1870. once a month or so but but before

1871. they do that they message all the

1872. members and they say hey listen

1873. we're going to take communion

1874. you've got to get all your

1875. relationships in order as far as it

1876. depends on you before you come

1877. I wonder if we should actually do

1878. something like that because then

1879. you begin to see this actually means

1880. something you know I've have you

1881. ever been this I've done this where

1882. you come to church and I've just

1883. had a big fight with my spouse with

1884. Fiona or you know you've you've got

1885. issues with someone in your CG and

1886. it's cold war and you come in and

1887. you know like this and I'm right I'm

1888. not gonna do anything and then it

1889. comes to communion do you know for

1890. me if I know communion is coming up

1891. I'm going oh flip I've got to deal

1892. with this I've got to either apologize

1893. I've got to move towards that person

1894. and I should never take communion if I

1895. have not resolved in my heart to

1896. actually move towards whether it's

1897. broken relationships it doesn't mean

1898. you have to fix everything but it

1899. means where's your heart moving are

1900. you coming in repentance to God are

1901. you asking God to just work in you

1902. are you resolving that I need to move

1903. towards this because that's what

1904. communion is to do and by the way if

1905. you are a Christian not a Christian we

1906. actually don't take communion not

1907. because we're trying to be mean but

1908. because we don't want you to be a

1909. hypocrite and proclaim something in

1910. your life that is not true of you we

1911. want you to actually come and hear

1912. about who Christ is so that you can

1913. take communion and delight in all he

1914. has done for us so we don't come

1915. flippantly we take it seriously we

1916. confess where we need to we confess

1917. how am I treating the church around me

1918. but then in the light of that we don't

1919. stay at that point okay because you know

1920. what happens straight after you've done

1921. the wedding vows people don't go oh

1922. they go right you celebrate the set

1923. this the weightiness then transforms

1924. into joy not a kind of guilt not a

1925. not a somberness the idea is that you

1926. know in some churches they call this

  1927. the Eucharist Eucharist means

1928. Thanksgiving it's meant to overflow that

1929. you know if we've examined ourselves and

1930. if we've seen and brought our sin to

1931. Christ then we can come confidently

1932. here not because we have anything to

1933. offer of ourselves but because we know

1934. that we don't get judgment when we come

1935. to Christ we get unending mercy because

1936. this meal is for people who have not

1937. got everything right this meal is for

1938. people who are not adequate this meal

1939. is for people who just have screwed up in

1940. so many ways I mean just look around you

1941. some of you look great others also look

1942. great but you know if you've experienced

1943. let me just say this is if you've

1944. experienced hurt from someone in the

1945. church what you can do sometimes is you

1946. look around and you go how can they like

1947. what right have they got to take you

1948. meaning like you know don't you know what

  1949. they've done but if you've examined

1950. yourself first you realize that somebody

1951. else could say that of you and yet you are

1952. invited by the host of the meal who is

1953. Jesus himself because his blood was not

1954. poured out for people who've done it all

1955. well it's poured out for people who know

1956. they haven't but know they need the grace

1957. of a savior and when you come and

1958. experience that you know that there is

1959. freedom for you you know that you are his

1960. and nothing can separate you from his love

1961. you know that your future is secure with

1962. him and you can celebrate Jesus and what

1963. that does is that then leads you as you

1964. look around and you look around the church

1965. and you go wow what a bunch of sinners but

1966. what a bunch of saints saved only by the

1967. blood of Jesus and that looks meant to lead

1968. you to love the church even more than you do

1969. right now that's why we take communion

  1970. you
