  1. Now, we're going to spend some time together in the introductory words from Paul of 1 Corinthians,

  2. page 1144 of our church Bible.

  3. We're going to read verses 1 to 9.

  4. As we think together about that statement, we believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son,

  5. our Lord, let's note together, even as we read, how often in which ways Paul describes Jesus,

  6. and we'll think together why that matters.

  7. 1 Corinthians chapter 1 at verse 1.

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  8. Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God and our brother Sosthenes,

  9. to the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be His holy people,

  10. together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.

  11. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  12. I always thank my God for you because of His grace given you in Christ Jesus,

  13. for in Him you have been enriched in every way, with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge,

  14. God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.

  15. Therefore, you do not lack any spiritual gift, as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

  16. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  17. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

  18. We're going to begin this week, as we did last week, with a question, perhaps a question that you have had asked

  19. or you've heard debates about, are all religions basically the same?

  20. Don't all roads lead to God?

  21. Don't all roads lead up the same mountain?

  22. So you may have heard that from a secular context, people without any religious background

  23. imagining that all religions are basically the same.

  24. You sometimes find it from people from within religious backgrounds,

  25. trying to smooth over the differences that exist to create that idea that,

  26. well, so long as everyone is worshipping, we're all worshipping the same God.

  27. I want us to ask the question, does that make sense?

  28. And to ask the question another way, what would Jesus say if He was asked the question,

  29. are all religions basically the same?

  30. In John chapter 8 verse 42, Jesus said, if God were your Father, you would love Me.

    John 8:42

  31. So there's a particular connection between the Father and the Son and how we should feel about the Father and the Son.

  32. John 14 verse 6 that we just read, I am the way, the truth and the life.

    John 14:6

  33. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

  34. And to go through all the Gospels, we would find Jesus making many exclusive claims, exclusive demands to loyalty.

  35. And to read the New Testament, we begin to understand that without Jesus,

  36. the Bible says we're not worshipping the true God.

  37. Without Jesus, there is no Trinity.

  38. Without Jesus, there is no final revelation from God.

  39. Without Jesus, there is no salvation.

  40. Without Jesus, there is no way back home to our God and Creator.

  41. So to listen to the whole testimony of the Bible is to understand that true worship must be Christ-centred.

  42. And so it's really important to be precise, especially about the person and the work of Jesus.

  43. Whenever you read, whenever we share the Apostles' Creed together,

  44. you maybe notice that there's so much of the Creed devoted to Jesus.

  45. Why is that?

  46. Because He is at the center.

  47. And there's so much confusion and misunderstanding that the Apostles' Creed helpfully clarifies for us.

  48. So when there are suggestions that good intentions is what matters,

  49. that being sincere as a worshipper is what it's all about,

  50. we need to understand from Scripture that it's no value if we're not worshipping in and through the Lord Jesus.

  51. When other religions say, well, Jesus was a good man, or a great man, or a wise guru,

  52. even if someone says He was a chosen by God man,

  53. that is no help for salvation or for worship.

  54. So the Jesus we must worship and proclaim is Jesus Christ, God's only Son and our Lord.

  55. And that's why we read from the book of 1 Corinthians.

  56. Because I think we have a lot to learn today from this letter and from what was happening in the church.

  57. So imagine, so Corinth was a large city, a significant city.

  58. Imagine the church kind of around this size, maybe slightly larger.

  59. Imagine if we were the only Christians in this city.

  60. And in this city, we were surrounded by pagan worship everywhere.

  61. And in fact, until a few months ago, that had been our background.

  62. And the city was known for immorality, famous or infamous through the Roman Empire,

  63. for its wild living.

  64. And in this city, there's competition and fighting,

  65. because everybody wants to be top dog and number one.

  66. And within this city, there's also the pressure of political rule claiming absolute loyalty on its citizens.

  67. Welcome to Corinth.

  68. But in some ways, welcome to Edinburgh.

  69. The challenge that Paul faces as he writes this letter to these young Christians in Corinth,

  70. is that while the gospel is intended to both break down boundaries because of grace,

  71. but to establish boundaries, because God set apart people who are called to be holy,

  72. the boundaries between the church and the world is almost non-existent.

  73. Worldly values have been accepted.

  74. And so Paul is writing to a church divided.

  75. See if you have time to read the letter of 1 Corinthians and read it through that lens of,

  76. here is a people who are divided.

  77. You'll see it coming everywhere.

  78. The first four chapters, we discover they're divided over leadership.

  79. I think Paul's the best.

  80. I think Peter's the best.

  81. We are of the Jesus party.

  82. They're a church divided over sexual ethics.

  83. In chapter 5.

  84. In chapter 6, we understand they're divided because they're taking each other to courts of law.

  85. They're divided over, what should we do about food offered to idols?

  86. Chapter 8.

  87. How should we practice public worship?

  88. Chapter 11.

  89. How do we exercise our spiritual gifts?

  90. Chapters 12 and 13.

  91. They're even divided over how to understand the resurrection, as we discovered in chapter 15.

  92. And so Paul writes to this young church, this divided church,

  93. and he really gives them one answer to their division.

  94. And the answer is Jesus.

  95. Takes them back to Jesus.

  96. To understand that he is everything.

  97. They're understanding the truth about who Jesus is,

  98. and the difference that Jesus makes is what will create a Christ-centered worshiping community.

  99. That's where their holiness will come from.

  100. That's where their unity will come from.

  101. In the present, before the writing of Paul's letter,

  102. they're spotting the difference between the church and the world.

  103. It was like doing those Where's Wally puzzles.

  104. If you've done Where's Wally, you know you're looking really hard.

  105. It's really difficult to find Wally.

  106. It's really hard to spot because they all look kind of similar.

  107. What Paul calls the church towards is the kind of difference that's night and day.

  108. And that can only happen as Christians are rooted in the gospel.

  109. And so what we're going to do is we're going to sort of focus in on Paul's introduction.

  110. And then we're going to sort of zoom out together.

  111. We're going to consider the titles that he uses for Jesus.

  112. And then we're going to pan from Corinth towards Edinburgh

  113. and think about why we also need the same truths that Paul was sharing in Corinth.

  114. The first thing to think about is the church's one foundation.

  115. Did you notice as we were reading these nine verses how often Jesus was mentioned?

  116. Nine times in nine verses with a variety of titles.

  117. Let's read them again with that emphasis.

  118. It is verse one, Christ Jesus who called Paul.

  119. So they are to hear that the authority for this whole letter comes not from Paul,

  120. but it comes from Jesus Christ.

  121. Verse two, to the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus.

  122. It is Christ Jesus who has set this church apart for God,

  123. who has made the church holy and has set them apart that they would call on His name in true worship,

  124. uniting them with everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  125. Verse three,

  126. grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  127. This Jesus who gives grace and peace is co-equal with the Father.

  128. That the undeserved love of God, right relationship with God,

  129. the flourishing of life from God comes from the Son as it comes from the Father.

  130. It comes from the Lord Jesus Christ.

  131. Verse four,

  132. I always thank my God for you because of His grace given you in Christ Jesus.

  133. Christ Jesus doesn't just give grace,

  134. He is God's gift of grace to the church.

  135. God's greatest gift is Himself in giving His Son to be our Savior,

  136. a gift to all who trust in Him.

  137. Christ Jesus in verse five is the source of all their spiritual riches.

  138. That they are able to teach the Bible and share the Bible and encourage one another in their faith

  139. is down not to themselves and their own greatness, but to Jesus and His grace.

  140. In verse six,

  141. we discover Jesus is the subject of Paul's teaching.

  142. God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.

  143. Remember, this was Paul who resolved to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

  144. Chapter one, verse 30,

  145. Christ Jesus who has become for us wisdom from God.

  146. That is our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

  147. Therefore, as it is written,

  148. let the one who boasts,

  149. boast in the Lord.

  150. Paul's message, Jesus is everything.

  151. Verse seven,

  152. we discover Jesus is the basis for Christian hope.

  153. Therefore, you do not lack any spiritual gift

  154. as you eagerly wait

  155. for our Lord Jesus Christ

  156. to be revealed.

  157. The same Lord Jesus Christ

  158. who gives spiritual gifts

  159. is the same Lord Jesus Christ

  160. who will return one day

  161. to finish the work of salvation,

  162. to establish God's kingdom,

  163. the kingdom of God

  164. on the earth,

  165. the earth as it is renewed.

  166. In verse eight,

  167. he reminds this church

  168. that Jesus is the key figure in history.

  169. He will keep you firm to the end

  170. so that you'll be blameless

  171. on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  172. The end of history,

  173. the beginning of the eternal reign of God

  174. is known as the day of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  175. And Jesus is the one who both

  176. keeps and perfects His people

  177. and returns as judge and king

  178. to bring His people in the end

  179. into His kingdom.

  180. Verse nine,

  181. God is faithful

  182. who has called you

  183. into fellowship with His Son,

  184. Jesus Christ,

  185. our Lord.

  186. It is God's Son.

  187. It is Jesus Christ,

  188. our Lord,

  189. who brings us fellowship

  190. with God.

  191. He is the subject of worship.

  192. He is the center of the church.

  193. First Corinthians is an amazing letter

  194. for so many ways.

  195. One of the ways I think it's amazing

  196. is that Paul can be thankful

  197. for this church

  198. and see God's grace in this church

  199. where there's so much confusion

  200. and there's so much crazy stuff happening

  201. where if we were invited

  202. to write the letter,

  203. we would probably just tell them

  204. to stop it.

  205. Just,

  206. what are you doing?

  207. But Paul celebrates grace

  208. and calls them back to the gospel.

  209. And Paul does another wonderful thing.

  210. He moves beyond the surface problems,

  211. divisions over leadership,

  212. divisions over public worship,

  213. divisions in the law court,

  214. to go to the heart issue,

  215. to say to the church,

  216. and we hear it so clearly

  217. in this introduction,

  218. what we need

  219. is to center

  220. and to re-center

  221. on the Lord Jesus Christ.

  222. The gospel that unites,

  223. the gospel that gives life,

  224. the foundation that needs

  225. to be built on

  226. is the reality

  227. that we are all one

  228. in Christ Jesus.

  229. What we boast about

  230. is not our intellect

  231. and skill and wisdom.

  232. Our boast is to be in Jesus.

  233. How is the church to live, Paul?

  234. The church is to be holy

  235. in response to

  236. the call of Jesus.

  237. He has set us apart

  238. by His grace.

  239. How are we supposed

  240. to make our decisions, Paul?

  241. Your decisions are based

  242. on what's going to give

  243. most honor

  244. to the Lord Jesus.

  245. So Paul is making

  246. really clear

  247. to this young church

  248. that the foundation

  249. for their life of faith

  250. is Jesus Christ,

  251. the Lord.

  252. Now let's just slow down

  253. a little bit

  254. and think about

  255. each of these titles

  256. that Paul uses

  257. on numerous times

  258. to ask ourselves

  259. what are we to believe

  260. about Jesus?

  261. Maybe you've been struck

  262. if you've walked

  263. or driven past

  264. the mosque up the road,

  265. they have the big banner

  266. Muslims believe in Jesus too.

  267. It's a really interesting

  268. way to communicate

  269. with the city, I think.

  270. I imagine wanting

  271. to break barriers

  272. and create a talking point.

  273. But again,

  274. the question that we would

  275. need to ask,

  276. respectfully ask,

  277. is could they confess

  278. what we confess?

  279. Could they confess

  280. the Apostles' Creed?

  281. Could somebody

  282. from any other religion

  283. that has a high view

  284. of Jesus,

  285. but not an ultimate view

  286. of Jesus,

  287. could they confess

  288. what we confess?

  289. And the answer is no.

  290. What makes Christianity

  291. unique is what

  292. the New Testament teaches

  293. to explain and defend

  294. that Jesus is the Christ,

  295. God's anointed one,

  296. He is God's Son,

  297. and He is the Lord.

  298. But that sign up the road

  299. reminds us

  300. that in the post-Christian

  301. and multicultural city

  302. and society

  303. that we live in,

  304. not dissimilar in some ways

  305. to Corinth,

  306. we need to know

  307. precisely what we believe

  308. or better,

  309. who we believe in.

  310. And we need to be ready

  311. to hold on to

  312. what makes us different,

  313. even if there is pressure

  314. from culture

  315. to try and flatten out

  316. the differences.

  317. And we need to graciously

  318. look for ways

  319. to both defend

  320. and share

  321. what we believe

  322. about Jesus.

  323. So let's begin

  324. with that.

  325. We believe

  326. in Jesus.

  327. Whenever we hear

  328. the name Jesus,

  329. it reminds us

  330. that He is a real figure

  331. in history.

  332. This is the Jesus

  333. who was born

  334. in Bethlehem,

  335. who was raised

  336. in Nazareth,

  337. who worked

  338. with His Father

  339. as a carpenter,

  340. and then became

  341. a traveling preacher,

  342. the Jesus

  343. who was executed

  344. by the Roman authorities

  345. sometime around

  346. 30 AD.

  347. This is the Jesus

  348. whose life was recorded

  349. in the history

  350. of the Gospels.

  351. Not unbiased accounts,

  352. but deliberately

  353. saying,

  354. this is what we have

  355. come to discover

  356. about Jesus.

  357. And they wanted

  358. to persuade

  359. and to convert

  360. through these

  361. redemptive histories,

  362. showing Jesus

  363. at the center

  364. of the story of salvation.

  365. The figure in history

  366. also recorded

  367. in non-Christian sources,

  368. Jewish and Roman.

  369. Historians make reference

  370. to the life,

  371. the death,

  372. and also

  373. that His followers

  374. believed in His resurrection.

  375. And of course,

  376. there is eyewitness testimony.

  377. Paul was one

  378. who saw

  379. the risen Lord Jesus

  380. and was taught

  381. by Him.

  382. The apostles

  383. who wrote

  384. the Gospels

  385. bearing witness

  386. to His ministry

  387. and His miracles,

  388. His claims to be God,

  389. His death

  390. on the cross,

  391. His resurrection

  392. and ascension.

  393. The Jesus

  394. that we believe in

  395. is a historical figure.

  396. And we have

  397. accurate,

  398. eyewitness,

  399. reliable testimony

  400. in the New Testament

  401. to give us confidence

  402. in that figure.

  403. Secondly,

  404. we believe in Jesus Christ.

  405. sometimes those two words

  406. come together

  407. so often

  408. that we might

  409. kind of just skip over,

  410. maybe even get confused

  411. and think,

  412. well,

  413. is this just a descriptor

  414. of who He is?

  415. It's not a surname,

  416. but rather it's a title

  417. or a job description.

  418. And it's a job description

  419. that is loaded

  420. with information.

  421. So boys and girls,

  422. if I was to talk to you

  423. about a teacher

  424. and the job of a teacher,

  425. you'd probably have

  426. lots of ideas

  427. about what a teacher does

  428. because you've been

  429. in a classroom

  430. and you know

  431. they teach you numbers

  432. and they teach you

  433. how to write

  434. and to spell

  435. and they teach you geography

  436. and all kinds of information

  437. on different subjects.

  438. They correct,

  439. they control,

  440. they do all kinds of things.

  441. When it comes to the Christ

  442. or the Messiah,

  443. we find His job description

  444. throughout the Old Testament.

  445. Christ or Messiah

  446. means the anointed one,

  447. anointed by God,

  448. given a task.

  449. And the remarkable thing

  450. about the Lord Jesus

  451. is that all these various strands

  452. that we find

  453. in the Old Testament,

  454. all these hopes

  455. and longings

  456. and promises

  457. come together

  458. in this one man.

  459. Jesus the Christ.

  460. Let's mention,

  461. just for our own benefit,

  462. six expectations

  463. for God's Christ.

  464. Firstly,

  465. that He is anointed

  466. in the sense

  467. that He is God's prophet,

  468. someone who speaks for God.

  469. John's Gospel begins

  470. describing Jesus

  471. as God's Word.

  472. And when God the Father

  473. sends Jesus the Son

  474. into the world,

  475. He is God's final

  476. and decisive revelation

  477. to the world.

  478. And Jesus,

  479. the Word who became flesh,

  480. fully reveals God's will

  481. for our salvation.

  482. Jesus speaks for God

  483. because He is God.

  484. So, He is anointed

  485. as prophet.

  486. But the New Testament

  487. also recognizes

  488. Jesus is our true priest

  489. or high priest.

  490. So, in the Old Testament,

  491. we meet the priests

  492. and they represent

  493. the people before God.

  494. Principally, perhaps,

  495. we think of them

  496. offering sacrifices.

  497. And as we read the Gospels

  498. and as we read

  499. the New Testament letters,

  500. we recognize

  501. Jesus is understood

  502. both as the priest

  503. who represents

  504. us before God

  505. and the one

  506. who offers Himself

  507. as the perfect sacrifice.

  508. And in Hebrews chapter 7 to 10,

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  509. we're reminded

  510. that Jesus in heaven

  511. still functions

  512. as our great high priest.

  513. What's Jesus doing now?

  514. He's interceding for us

  515. and He's sending

  516. the Spirit to us

  517. and He's speaking

  518. through His Word.

  519. And then Jesus is anointed

  520. in the sense

  521. that He is God's King

  522. with the authority of God

  523. to rule over us

  524. by His Word,

  525. the Gospel Word,

  526. by the Spirit.

  527. And as a King,

  528. not only does He rule over us,

  529. He also defends

  530. and protects us

  531. so that when our faith

  532. is in Jesus,

  533. our salvation is secure.

  534. He is our great prophet,

  535. priest, and King.

  536. But also we find

  537. within the Gospels

  538. reference to Jesus

  539. as the Son of David.

  540. At one place,

  541. it would be Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  542. We'll get there in a few weeks.

  543. Blind Bartimaeus.

  544. Remember Bartimaeus,

  545. he hears that Jesus

  546. is walking by

  547. and he cries out,

  548. Son of David,

  549. have mercy on me.

  550. The great hope

  551. of Old Testament Israel,

  552. 2 Samuel 7,

  553. was that a king

  554. from the family line

  555. of David,

  556. would be established

  557. to rule and reign forever.

  558. Bartimaeus was blind,

  559. but he saw it.

  560. And Jesus,

  561. in His teaching,

  562. says that He is the king,

  563. but perhaps not the kind of king

  564. that the people expected.

  565. He would bring in

  566. the glory of God

  567. in His reign,

  568. but it would be the glory

  569. of a spiritual kingdom,

  570. not an earthly one.

  571. And His kingdom

  572. wouldn't come instantly.

  573. It would be both

  574. a kingdom that would come now

  575. and there would be more to come.

  576. There's now

  577. and there's not yet.

  578. So He'd tell parables

  579. about the growth of the kingdom

  580. from a mustard seed

  581. until it became a great tree.

  582. Or He'd tell parables

  583. about a king

  584. who goes away

  585. in a long journey

  586. and he delays

  587. on His return.

  588. So the kingdom is here,

  589. but we're still waiting

  590. Jesus' return

  591. when it will be brought

  592. in decisively.

  593. But Jesus is recognized

  594. throughout the New Testament

  595. as the son of David,

  596. the promised king

  597. and saviour.

  598. Jesus is also

  599. the son of man.

  600. That was His favourite title

  601. He used of Himself.

  602. As He would say to Zacchaeus,

  603. again, we'll get there

  604. in a few weeks,

  605. the son of man came

  606. to seek and to save the lost.

  607. Who is the son of man

  608. in the Old Testament?

  609. He is this glorious figure.

  610. Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  611. we meet Him

  612. in the throne room of heaven

  613. and God the Father

  614. gives Him glory

  615. and authority

  616. and eternal rule.

  617. And the amazing thing,

  618. as Jesus says,

  619. He's the son of man

  620. and He claims

  621. that glory

  622. for Himself,

  623. He is also the one

  624. who comes near

  625. and shows compassion

  626. and suffers

  627. and substitutes Himself

  628. and sacrifices

  629. for our forgiveness.

  630. And that takes us

  631. to another of those promises

  632. in the Old Testament

  633. that Jesus is

  634. the suffering servant.

  635. Perhaps this is where

  636. the people in Jesus' day

  637. often got Him wrong.

  638. They were big on the glory part

  639. but struggled to see

  640. how suffering could be good news.

  641. He is the servant

  642. who brings this great hope

  643. of rescue and salvation,

  644. not by force of might

  645. but by the way

  646. of humble sacrifice.

  647. And so Jesus turned

  648. expectations upside down.

  649. Jesus is the Christ,

  650. the Anointed One

  651. and His work for us

  652. is good news.

  653. He is also

  654. God's only Son.

  655. He is Jesus,

  656. He is Christ,

  657. He is God's

  658. only Son.

  659. We thought about that

  660. last week

  661. when we thought about God

  662. and the Father Almighty,

  663. that God is the Father

  664. of believers

  665. by adoption.

  666. That's such a wonderful,

  667. precious truth.

  668. That He loves us

  669. and invites us

  670. into His family.

  671. But uniquely,

  672. He is the Father

  673. of His Son

  674. from all eternity.

  675. the testimony

  676. that the Father gives.

  677. We heard it

  678. as Jesus was baptized.

  679. This is my Son

  680. and I love Him.

  681. Or we can think about

  682. the testimony

  683. of John 3,

  684. 16.

  685. For God so loved

  686. the world

  687. that He gave

  688. His one

  689. and only Son

  690. that whoever

  691. believes in Him

  692. shall not perish

  693. but have

  694. eternal life.

  695. life.

  696. And we discover

  697. this mystery

  698. within the teaching

  699. of the New Testament.

  700. Something that's

  701. perhaps impossible

  702. for us to wrap

  703. our minds around.

  704. That Jesus is

  705. the eternally begotten

  706. Son of the Father.

  707. That Jesus is always

  708. Son to His Father

  709. and the Father

  710. is always

  711. the Father

  712. to His Son.

  713. There is no beginning

  714. to Jesus.

  715. He is eternally

  716. the Son.

  717. How does that work?

  718. We may never know.

  719. But we do need

  720. to know

  721. that Christ

  722. is the Son of God.

  723. And that's clear

  724. in Scripture.

  725. He's not just

  726. a good man.

  727. Absolutely He was

  728. a good man

  729. but He was more

  730. than that.

  731. Not just a God

  732. inspired man.

  733. He is God man.

  734. He's not just

  735. our moral example.

  736. Not just our

  737. great teacher

  738. to follow.

  739. He is the one

  740. who saves us

  741. as God.

  742. The one

  743. we worship.

  744. And that takes us

  745. to the last title

  746. that we hear

  747. a number of times

  748. in 1 Corinthians

  749. that He is

  750. the Lord

  751. Jesus Christ.

  752. He is our

  753. Lord.

  754. The word Lord

  755. when the Greek

  756. Old Testament

  757. was being written.

  758. It's the same word

  759. that's used

  760. for God

  761. in the Old Testament.

  762. To go back

  763. to John's Gospel

  764. he had a purpose

  765. statement

  766. as he wrote

  767. that Gospel.

  768. He wrote that

  769. we might believe

  770. that Jesus

  771. is the Messiah

  772. the Son of God

  773. and that by believing

  774. we might have life

  775. in His name.

  776. And one of John's

  777. purposes

  778. as he writes

  779. is to show

  780. the uniqueness

  781. of Jesus.

  782. Remember those

  783. I am sayings

  784. where Jesus claims

  785. the name of God

  786. and the authority

  787. of God

  788. so that when we hear

  789. Jesus say to us

  790. follow me

  791. we understand

  792. that this is

  793. the Lord

  794. who is speaking

  795. to us.

  796. Not a wise guru

  797. and not

  798. just a man

  799. this is the Lord

  800. who is speaking.

  801. And it's not surprising

  802. then that the first

  803. confession

  804. of the church

  805. was

  806. Jesus

  807. is

  808. Lord.

  809. If we go back

  810. to Corinth

  811. that's set

  812. against the background

  813. where they're beginning

  814. to hear

  815. the demands

  816. that they proclaim

  817. along with every

  818. other citizen

  819. Caesar

  820. is Lord.

  821. These competing

  822. loyalties

  823. perhaps we recognize

  824. competing claims

  825. for our own

  826. heart

  827. and loyalty

  828. and worship

  829. and ultimately

  830. for the early

  831. Christian martyrs

  832. it was as they

  833. testified

  834. that Jesus

  835. is Lord.

  836. That's where the

  837. pressure came.

  838. That's where the

  839. persecution came.

  840. Paul's message

  841. to the Corinthians

  842. surrounded by

  843. the pressures

  844. of the Roman Empire

  845. was to live

  846. with Jesus

  847. Christ

  848. as Lord.

  849. G.I. Packer

  850. to come much

  851. closer to our own

  852. day

  853. says that if

  854. Jesus is God

  855. the Son

  856. and the anointed

  857. Saviour

  858. King

  859. he has a right

  860. to rule us

  861. and we have no

  862. right to resist

  863. him.

  864. It's the Lordship

  865. of Jesus

  866. and it reminds

  867. us

  868. just as we

  869. close

  870. that what we

  871. believe

  872. about Jesus

  873. matters.

  874. It's not

  875. incidental.

  876. We don't want

  877. to do

  878. Jesus a disservice

  879. we don't want

  880. to do other

  881. people a disservice

  882. by trying to

  883. airbrush out

  884. the differences

  885. and to suggest

  886. that well

  887. we're kind of

  888. all the same

  889. if we're

  890. worshipping

  891. some way.

  892. If we are

  893. to take

  894. Jesus

  895. on his own

  896. terms

  897. thinking about

  898. what C.S.

  899. Lewis said

  900. borrowing from

  901. Rabbi Duncan

  902. who used to

  903. teach in the

  904. Free Church

  905. College

  906. if we take

  907. Jesus and his

  908. claims seriously

  909. we are left

  910. to conclude

  911. either he's

  912. a liar

  913. or he's

  914. a lunatic

  915. or he is

  916. indeed the

  917. Lord.

  918. That's what

  919. Paul wrote

  920. to the church

  921. in Corinth

  922. Jesus

  923. is

  924. Lord

  925. therefore

  926. as God's

  927. people

  928. we should

  929. live

  930. in

  931. him

  932. uniting

  933. around

  934. him

  935. as

  936. our

  937. centre

  938. lifting

  939. him

  940. up

  941. and

  942. not

  943. ourselves

  944. living

  945. holy

  946. lives

  947. for the

  948. sake

  949. of

  950. his

  951. honour

  952. and

  953. not

  954. our

  955. own

  956. worshipping

  957. in ways

  958. that

  959. please

  960. him.

  961. We need

  962. that same

  963. message

  964. always

  965. that we

  966. would have

  967. that same

  968. controlling

  969. centre

  970. for our

  971. church

  972. and for

  973. our

  974. individual

  975. Christian

  976. lives.

  977. And as

  978. we thought

  979. about a lot

  980. of truths

  981. about Jesus

  982. let's just

  983. close by

  984. reminding

  985. ourselves

  986. that more

  987. than simply

  988. knowing

  989. truths

  990. Jesus Christ

  991. is Lord

  992. we must

  993. trust him

  994. and be able

  995. to say

  996. that Jesus

  997. Christ is

  998. my Lord

  999. and be

  1000. ready to

  1001. submit to

  1002. him

  1003. in worship

  1004. and obedience

  1005. and to

  1006. live under

  1007. his rule

  1008. because he

  1009. is God's

  1010. son

  1011. Jesus

  1012. Christ

  1013. our

  1014. Lord.

  1015. Let's pray

  1016. together.
