  1. Then the angel left her. So far, the reading of God's Word.

  2. We're continuing in this series on the Apostles' Creed. We're now in that third article

  3. of the Creed where we confess that Jesus Christ, the only eternal, only begotten Son of God,

  4. the Father Almighty, our Lord, was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

  5. That phrase in the Creed is drawn directly from Luke 1, verse 35. And as we think about that phrase,

    Luke 1:35

  6. that great statement of the incarnation, it's also, as we've been doing this series, good to remind

  7. ourselves of some of the benefits that the creeds bring to us. These ecumenical or universal creeds

  8. of the church are personal, but they're not private. I, as an individual, am confessing my faith,

  9. the faith that I believe, by means of the faith by which I believe. But I'm doing so with the church

  10. of all ages, of all times, of all places. And so the creeds are these corporate, common summaries of

  11. the faith that have been tried and tested by the church around the globe and even handed down through

  12. the centuries. And in an age of ours that is so rootless, this is a wonderful blessing for us to be

  13. rooted in an ancient faith. And so as we as individuals and together as the local church here

  14. confess our faith using these words of the Apostles' Creed, we should realize that this act involves the

  15. whole body of Christ in a very positive and lively role. We confess the creed, ex animo is the language we

  16. traditionally use, from the soul. As one of my former teachers liked to say, breathlessly, breathlessly.

  17. And as we do so, we remind ourselves of the identity of our God, Father, Son, and Spirit, of His great works,

  18. and of the essence of our faith. And we affirm to our culture and to ourselves as we're constantly being

  19. shaped and even catechized by that culture into the reign of sin and death and evil in the world,

  20. rather than the gospel. As a gathered body right now, that we are explicitly publicly denying all other

  21. pretenders to the divine throne, apart from Jesus Christ. That there is no other pathway to God,

  22. but through Jesus Christ. God the Son come down to us from heaven to earth, the one who assumed our

  23. humanity in order to bring us redemption and justification and sanctification and adoption

  24. and glorification and salvation. God the Father acting for us in the Son by the Spirit.

  25. And finally, by our use of the creeds, we are helped to remember that we are ascribing to God alone

  26. the glory and honor that's due to Him as our Creator, but also as our Redeemer.

  27. The church has concluded here in the creed, but also maybe even more particularly,

  28. perhaps a little more decisively at the ecumenical council in Chalcedon in the year 451,

  29. that Jesus Christ is both truly God and truly man. One person with two natures, divine and human.

  30. United in that one person, yet those two natures are not confused, they don't change,

  31. they don't separate, they're not divided, and that's what we want to think about here this evening together.

  32. Three things, first of all, that Jesus is fully God.

  33. Second, that Jesus is also fully human.

  34. And third, briefly, what that means for us concerning His present ministry.

  35. So first of all, the deity of Christ.

  36. Jesus Christ is fully divine.

  37. B.B. Warfield is a name that doubtless many of you know here,

  38. and in one essay that he wrote on the person of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  39. he made a very interesting statement.

  40. He said,

  41. The New Testament evidence for the deity of the Lord Jesus is so abundant and persuasive,

  42. it can be difficult actually to state succinctly.

  43. And his point is that our tendency to defend the deity of Jesus is to go to a handful of really big texts,

  44. really big passages.

  45. And that's good, that's right, because there are clear, explicit passages that teach that He is God.

  46. But Warfield's point is even more than that,

  47. because he's saying that the whole New Testament is predicated on,

  48. is written on the presupposition that the one about whom these books are written is Himself very God.

  49. That it seeps through on each page, in each paragraph.

  50. You cannot miss it.

  51. But of course we know that some passages are epitomizing.

  52. They summarize for us very clearly the personal identity of Jesus.

  53. That He is Himself God.

  54. We think of Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  55. We think even more succinctly of the Gospel of John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  56. The opening words there.

  57. In the beginning was the Word.

  58. And the Word was with God.

  59. The text says the Word was face to face with God.

  60. And the Word was God.

  61. He has all the attributes of deity.

  62. The title of deity.

  63. And yet there's a personal differentiation

  64. between Father and Son.

  65. And of course, Spirit.

  66. Not in terms of divine being or divine essence.

  67. But in terms of personal character.

  68. And so wherever you look,

  69. as the church fathers knew and understood so well,

  70. it's not possible to speak about God the Father

  71. without implying that God the Father is Father

  72. because there is God the Son.

  73. And it's not possible to speak about God the Son

  74. without implying that there is God the Father.

  75. And so too, if we extended this,

  76. it's not possible to speak about God the Spirit

  77. without speaking of God the Father and God the Son.

  78. One God drives us to think about the three persons.

  79. The three persons drive us to think about one God.

  80. You know, that's the mystery of the incarnation.

  81. But we read then in Hebrews chapter 1 verse 2

    Hebrews 1:2

  82. that it's particularly Jesus Christ.

  83. He is the one for whom God created the world.

  84. The writer there is reflecting on Genesis 1

  85. just as John did in verse 1 of chapter 1

  86. of the Gospel of John,

  87. but doing so from a slightly different angle

  88. because what the writer in Hebrews there

  89. is saying to us when you read about God speaking

  90. in Genesis, understand this,

  91. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  92. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  93. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  94. because He is the creator of all that there is.

  95. He is also the one who governs providence.

  96. Yes, He does so through the work of His Spirit.

  97. You know, the Spirit is the perfecter of God's purposes.

  98. Every act proceeds from the Father in the Son

  99. and is brought to completion, perfection,

  100. by the Spirit.

  101. But particularly it's through the Son

  102. that the very universe is upheld.

  103. And were He to withdraw His hand,

  104. it would collapse entirely.

  105. In Him all things hold together.

  106. Colossians 1, verse 16 and 17.

    Colossians 1:16

  107. By Him, Jesus Christ,

  108. all things were created in heaven and earth,

  109. both visible and invisible,

  110. created through Him and created for Him.

  111. So that not only in redemption,

  112. but in creation and providence,

  113. the Son is the way, the truth, and the life.

  114. I mean, this is a remarkable picture of Jesus Christ.

  115. And when we start to understand this,

  116. perhaps we should not be so surprised

  117. when we read a little further in Hebrews 1,

    Hebrews 1:6

  118. verse 6,

  119. where God the Father pronounces, commands,

  120. let all my angels worship Him,

  121. God the Son.

  122. You know, we often think about and sing

  123. about the ascension of Jesus Christ,

  124. the angelic response in that great psalm,

  125. Psalm 24.

  126. One of the absolute just marvels of our tradition

  127. is our singing of Psalm 24.

  128. And you can't sing it and not have your heart moved.

  129. And the angels there, as it were,

  130. are looking over the battlements of heaven,

  131. asking, who is it that's coming back in triumph?

  132. And the call goes out,

  133. you ancient gates, lift up your heads,

  134. you doors be open wide,

  135. because it's the King of glory coming in.

  136. He's the King of glory forever to abide.

  137. And it's an extraordinary picture of Jesus.

  138. But do you also think about that moment

  139. when Jesus was conceived in the womb

  140. of the Virgin Mary

  141. and was utterly dependent on His mother there

  142. in every way, for every aspect of His life,

  143. in the darkness of her womb?

  144. And the same command is then ringing through the heavens.

  145. Let all my angels worship Him,

  146. cherubim, seraphim,

  147. gathered around the throne in awe and wonder,

  148. because the Son of God

  149. was taking human flesh.

  150. And all things are to be His,

  151. created for Him and through Him,

  152. appointed heir of all things.

  153. All things are Jesus Christ.

  154. And this is why I think

  155. in John's Gospel as well,

  156. he tells us in chapter 12 there,

  157. he references that wonderful vision

  158. of the prophet Isaiah from Isaiah 6.

  159. This incredible vision of the glory of God.

  160. And John says,

  161. that was a vision of Jesus Christ.

  162. And think about that vision,

  163. the angelic host there,

  164. marvelous, glorious.

  165. Yet they cover their faces,

  166. they cover their feet.

  167. You know, they are themselves without sin,

  168. but they're created.

  169. And so as creatures,

  170. they must veil themselves,

  171. they must tremble in the presence

  172. of the infinite holiness

  173. and majesty

  174. and glory of God the Son.

  175. Again, as John puts it

  176. in that prologue to his Gospel,

  177. he was in the beginning,

  178. face to face with God,

  179. because he was God.

  180. And all things were made

  181. through him and for him.

  182. And without him

  183. was not made anything

  184. that was made.

  185. And in him we beheld

  186. the glory of God.

  187. And God is jealous

  188. for his glory.

  189. God does not share his glory

  190. with any other.

  191. But in Jesus Christ,

  192. we see the glory of God.

  193. And when you start

  194. to put all these pieces together,

  195. you see how the Gospel

  196. comes to grip you

  197. when you learn who it is.

  198. Who it is who has come for you.

  199. When that finally gets

  200. preached into our hearts,

  201. when it penetrates

  202. our very being.

  203. Because the incarnation

  204. does not mean

  205. that Jesus was a little baby.

  206. it's not a nativity set.

  207. But it means that the creator

  208. and sustainer of all things,

  209. first in majesty and glory,

  210. worshipped by the angels,

  211. infinite, eternal,

  212. and unchangeable in his wisdom,

  213. his being, his power,

  214. his holiness, his justice,

  215. his goodness, his truth,

  216. who at a single word

  217. could dissolve this world,

  218. which has sinned against him.

  219. Descended to the depths

  220. of this world

  221. to assume our flesh,

  222. to become our Savior.

  223. Is that not overwhelming?

  224. You see, the Gospel's

  225. never done overwhelming us.

  226. And that's why we need to hear it

  227. again and again.

  228. That's why it always needs

  229. to be put in our ear,

  230. because it's always new.

  231. It's always startling.

  232. It's always bringing forth in us

  233. wave upon wave of adoration.

  234. That God the Son

  235. should come.

  236. But not only that, loved ones,

  237. that God the Son

  238. should come for me.

  239. For me.

  240. It's very particular.

  241. We see then that God

  242. comes for us in Jesus Christ.

  243. Jesus Christ is fully God,

  244. but also, secondly,

  245. he is fully man.

  246. He is fully divine,

  247. but also fully human.

  248. You know, that is just

  249. as important for us.

  250. And sometimes we focus

  251. so much of our energy

  252. on defending the deity

  253. of Christ

  254. that we don't pay enough

  255. attention, in fact,

  256. to the humanity of Jesus.

  257. Or as again,

  258. Warfield concluded,

  259. he said,

  260. if there are no two natures,

  261. divine and human,

  262. in one person,

  263. there's no incarnation.

  264. And if there's no incarnation,

  265. there's no Christianity

  266. at all.

  267. There are plenty of people

  268. who make the mistake

  269. of thinking that

  270. the humanity

  271. of Jesus

  272. is transfused

  273. with deity

  274. so that actually

  275. the life and experience

  276. of Jesus

  277. is somehow radically

  278. different from us.

  279. But that's not true.

  280. Of course,

  281. he has the full measure

  282. of the Spirit.

  283. But what the Scriptures

  284. tell us from beginning

  285. to end,

  286. what is the great emphasis

  287. over and over

  288. and over again,

  289. is that if he's not

  290. really,

  291. truly,

  292. fully man,

  293. sharing our world,

  294. sharing our frailty,

  295. knowing each of our weaknesses,

  296. getting thirsty,

  297. getting hungry,

  298. not a child prodigy,

  299. but growing in knowledge

  300. and understanding,

  301. going to a funeral

  302. and shedding tears

  303. of sorrow

  304. at the death

  305. of his friend,

  306. becoming exhausted

  307. in his body,

  308. without these things

  309. he would not at all

  310. be fit to be our Savior.

  311. And that brings us,

  312. then,

  313. to these opening chapters

  314. of Genesis.

  315. And we only read

  316. from Genesis 3,

  317. but I'm sure

  318. we're familiar

  319. with Genesis 1 and 2

  320. as well.

  321. I thought,

  322. there's a limit

  323. to how much

  324. I can read

  325. this evening.

  326. But when God created Adam,

  327. we know,

  328. he gave him

  329. the great privilege

  330. of sharing communion

  331. and fellowship with him.

  332. And Eden was there

  333. created as a sanctuary.

  334. It was a garden temple.

  335. And God,

  336. the great king,

  337. set Adam there

  338. to be a gardener,

  339. to be a priest king

  340. under him,

  341. to rule in his name.

  342. And the world

  343. was created good,

  344. but it was not

  345. in its final condition.

  346. And Adam was then

  347. given a task.

  348. He had the task

  349. to subdue it,

  350. to guard it,

  351. to tend it,

  352. to extend

  353. that glorious reign.

  354. And he was provided

  355. by God

  356. with everything necessary

  357. for that task.

  358. And he was called

  359. to follow the pattern

  360. of his creator

  361. because he was made

  362. an analogy of God

  363. in the very image

  364. and likeness of God.

  365. And God himself

  366. there in creation

  367. led this wonderful

  368. procession

  369. of six days

  370. of labor,

  371. transforming

  372. the tohu abohu,

  373. the darkness

  374. and void,

  375. into creation.

  376. No longer lifeless

  377. and void

  378. and this confused mass,

  379. but God molded it

  380. and shaped it

  381. and ordered it.

  382. And he separated

  383. the waters

  384. in the night

  385. from the day

  386. and through all

  387. of his ordering

  388. and separating

  389. and naming,

  390. he called Adam

  391. to follow him,

  392. to lead all of creation

  393. in another procession,

  394. a parade,

  395. as it were,

  396. behind the Lord himself

  397. in royal procession

  398. from his holy hill

  399. in Eden,

  400. doing what God

  401. commanded him to do

  402. to the very ends

  403. of the earth.

  404. There's one writer here

  405. who has marvelously put it

  406. summing this up.

  407. Whether plant,

  408. tree,

  409. sun,

  410. moon,

  411. star,

  412. bird,

  413. or fish,

  414. everything performs

  415. its duly ordained office

  416. in the first two chapters

  417. of Genesis,

  418. just like the priests

  419. and Levites

  420. of the sanctuary

  421. in their appointed work.

  422. And finally,

  423. Adam as the archpriest

  424. and crown

  425. of the whole created order,

  426. God's very vice-regent

  427. along with Eve,

  428. exercising dominion

  429. under God

  430. in this vast

  431. cosmic empire

  432. in which everything

  433. that happens

  434. is meant to redound

  435. to the glory

  436. of God.

  437. Now,

  438. that was the commission.

  439. That was the task.

  440. Adam was created

  441. there in covenant,

  442. in a covenant of works.

  443. He had a job to do.

  444. He was on probation.

  445. There was a trial.

  446. Would he do that job?

  447. Would he follow

  448. his creator?

  449. And of course,

  450. we know what happened.

  451. Adam forfeited

  452. his role.

  453. He listened

  454. to the false witness,

  455. the blasphemy

  456. of the serpent,

  457. that agent of Satan.

  458. The very one

  459. who he is supposed

  460. to drive out

  461. of the garden.

  462. That's the one

  463. from whom

  464. he takes counsel.

  465. Not only takes counsel,

  466. but takes counsel

  467. against the Lord,

  468. his creator.

  469. As though Adam

  470. might instead be God.

  471. As we read

  472. from Genesis 3,

    Genesis 3:8

  473. verse 8,

  474. they heard,

  475. that is Adam and Eve,

  476. the sound of the Lord

  477. God walking in the garden

  478. in the cool of the day.

  479. The cool of the day.

  480. The scene there

  481. could not be

  482. any more different

  483. from that old hymn.

  484. Perhaps

  485. you have the unfortunate

  486. privilege,

  487. like I do,

  488. of not being able

  489. to excise it

  490. from your mind.

  491. You know,

  492. I come to the garden alone.

  493. The dew is still

  494. on the roses,

  495. and the joy we share

  496. while we tarry there.

  497. None other has ever known.

  498. But that is not it at all.

  499. That is not at all

  500. the picture.

  501. This is the arrival

  502. of God as judge.

  503. God is on a mission

  504. of judgment here.

  505. The cool of the day

  506. is in fact

  507. the spirit of the day.

  508. This is the day

  509. of the Lord.

  510. The one who's come

  511. to execute judgment

  512. upon Adam

  513. in his sin.

  514. His image bearer

  515. who becomes

  516. the covenant breaker.

  517. And when that call

  518. comes to Adam

  519. from his covenant Lord,

  520. Adam, where are you?

  521. It's not that God

  522. doesn't know

  523. where Adam is.

  524. You think of that

  525. question that perhaps

  526. maybe a wife

  527. can ask a husband.

  528. Where are you

  529. in this relationship?

  530. There's something

  531. in between here.

  532. Where are you right now?

  533. You're not here.

  534. The true servant

  535. of the Lord

  536. that Adam was meant to be

  537. should have called back,

  538. Here I am.

  539. Let it be done to me

  540. according to your word.

  541. But he disobeyed

  542. the voice of his father.

  543. And in his transgression

  544. he plunged

  545. all in his stead,

  546. all of humanity

  547. into sin

  548. and death

  549. and alienation

  550. from God.

  551. But you know

  552. there's another promise

  553. as we read.

  554. This is why we read

  555. Genesis 3.

  556. Genesis 3.15

  557. that first announcement

  558. of the gospel.

  559. There will be another son

  560. born of the woman

  561. who will undo

  562. all that Adam did.

  563. Who will do

  564. all that Adam

  565. failed to do.

  566. Who will provide

  567. not only a sacrifice

  568. of atonement

  569. but also an obedient life.

  570. Because ultimately

  571. it's not sacrifice

  572. but it's obedience

  573. that God delights in.

  574. And that's the task

  575. given to

  576. and taken up gladly

  577. by our Lord Jesus Christ.

  578. The eternal son of God

  579. who becomes incarnate

  580. to give his life

  581. for his people.

  582. And this is particularly

  583. the focus

  584. of that promise to Mary

  585. that we read

  586. in Luke 1.

  587. Adam became a living being

  588. by the breath

  589. of the spirit.

  590. Genesis 2.7.

  591. Here in Luke

  592. the Holy Spirit

  593. coming upon Mary

  594. to overshadow her

  595. as the power

  596. of the Most High

  597. so that she'll

  598. become pregnant.

  599. This is part

  600. of the basic vocabulary

  601. of the spirit's work

  602. throughout the Bible.

  603. We think of

  604. Genesis 1.2.

  605. The spirit there

  606. hovering over the waters

  607. of creation.

  608. It's the exact same

  609. language we find

  610. from Moses

  611. singing to the assembly

  612. of the Lord.

  613. Israel there

  614. in Deuteronomy 32.

  615. He compares the Lord

  616. in verse 11

  617. to an eagle

  618. that stirs up its nest,

  619. flutters over its young,

  620. that spreads out its wings.

  621. And by the way,

  622. you notice

  623. that the same spirit

  624. who's at work

  625. in the womb of Mary

  626. has already been at work

  627. in her heart.

  628. That is why

  629. she answers

  630. amen

  631. to that promise.

  632. That's why

  633. all generations

  634. shall call her blessed.

  635. So the spirit

  636. prepares a body

  637. for the son.

  638. The son

  639. who is the exact image

  640. and imprint

  641. of God.

  642. It's not at all

  643. actually

  644. the virgin birth.

  645. You try to

  646. change the language

  647. but you can only

  648. get so far.

  649. It's the virgin conception.

  650. Because the conception

  651. of Jesus Christ

  652. is

  653. ex nihilo creation

  654. out of nothing.

  655. The exact parallel

  656. to the very beginning

  657. let there be light

  658. divine fiat

  659. and there was light.

  660. So that his humanity

  661. would be untainted

  662. by sin.

  663. And like Adam

  664. before the fall

  665. not yet confirmed

  666. in righteousness

  667. and glory.

  668. But his gestation

  669. his

  670. delivery

  671. are all

  672. all too normal.

  673. 100% normal.

  674. Still dependent

  675. on the word

  676. and spirit

  677. but following

  678. that other kind

  679. of creation

  680. you find in Genesis.

  681. Let the earth

  682. bring forth

  683. and the earth

  684. brought forth.

  685. And there was pain.

  686. Mary was in labor

  687. giving birth

  688. to a child.

  689. No obstetrics care.

  690. There was a placenta.

  691. It was bloody.

  692. A real human

  693. with a real soul

  694. was born to her.

  695. A particular Jewish male

  696. Jesus of Nazareth.

  697. You see

  698. the word

  699. became flesh.

  700. Yes

  701. but the word

  702. became flesh.

  703. Only God

  704. can save.

  705. Only God

  706. incarnate

  707. in our humanity

  708. can save fully.

  709. Because the great

  710. gift of Jesus Christ

  711. is that he is

  712. second man.

  713. Second Adam.

  714. The last Adam.

  715. Paul belabors

  716. that point

  717. for us

  718. in Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  719. chapter 5

  720. and 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  721. chapter 15.

  722. That he is the one

  723. who's come in our flesh

  724. to undergo

  725. the curse

  726. of the first man

  727. that first Adam

  728. and to fulfill

  729. the covenant

  730. of works

  731. for our sake.

  732. winning the right

  733. to unlock

  734. that gate of heaven

  735. and lead his people

  736. in procession

  737. into glory.

  738. So he is the God man.

  739. He's the mediator

  740. of the covenant

  741. of grace

  742. for our sake.

  743. That's the promise

  744. to Mary.

  745. That the Lord

  746. shall become

  747. the servant.

  748. The servant

  749. who is the Lord.

  750. And every moment

  751. of the life

  752. of Jesus Christ

  753. then we see him

  754. on trial,

  755. on probation,

  756. recapitulating,

  757. restoring all

  758. that was lost

  759. in Adam,

  760. fulfilling all

  761. that was promised

  762. throughout every stage

  763. of redemptive history.

  764. And all of God's

  765. covenant promises

  766. converge in him.

  767. He is the true Israel.

  768. He is the messianic

  769. savior,

  770. the son of David,

  771. the one whose kingdom

  772. shall have no end.

  773. So that finally

  774. you see a proper

  775. relationship

  776. has come into view.

  777. There's actually

  778. now a proper

  779. conversation

  780. between covenant

  781. Lord and covenant

  782. servant.

  783. The Lord speaks,

  784. Adam,

  785. where are you?

  786. The true servant

  787. of the Lord,

  788. Jesus Christ,

  789. answers back,

  790. here I am

  791. in obedience

  792. to God's glory.

  793. And for the first time

  794. the world

  795. has an Adam,

  796. Israel has a king

  797. who only does

  798. all that the Father

  799. commands him.

  800. That's what we read

  801. in John 8.

  802. I always do,

  803. Jesus says,

  804. what is pleasing

  805. to my Father.

  806. Because he is

  807. our answer.

  808. He is our proper

  809. response to God

  810. in his perfect

  811. life and obedience.

  812. But you see,

  813. he's also God's answer

  814. in flesh and blood

  815. to sinners,

  816. to me,

  817. to you.

  818. And when he died

  819. to bear God's judgment

  820. for our sake,

  821. he was then also

  822. raised as the first fruits

  823. of a new world

  824. altogether.

  825. So the day shall come,

  826. it's guaranteed

  827. for us

  828. that out of the graves

  829. even,

  830. God's people

  831. will be resurrected.

  832. And in Christ,

  833. even the last enemy

  834. will be subdued

  835. and all things

  836. will be made

  837. subject to him.

  838. because of his

  839. true humanity,

  840. you see,

  841. we can even be sure

  842. of those last lines

  843. of the creed,

  844. the resurrection

  845. of the dead

  846. and the life everlasting.

  847. And his last act

  848. of salvation

  849. is then to lead

  850. that procession,

  851. that parade

  852. that Adam was

  853. supposed to have done.

  854. At last,

  855. the faithful son,

  856. you see,

  857. the son of God

  858. who's become a son

  859. and who broke

  860. the neck

  861. of the tempter,

  862. that false witness,

  863. and who leads

  864. all of creation

  865. back to God,

  866. the head

  867. of a new people,

  868. bringing them

  869. with him

  870. in his train.

  871. This is why

  872. Jesus says

  873. in Hebrews chapter 2,

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  874. presenting himself

  875. to the Father,

  876. he says,

  877. here I am.

  878. And you see

  879. who I've brought

  880. with me?

  881. Brothers and sisters,

  882. now made children

  883. of God,

  884. the very ones

  885. that you have

  886. given to me.

  887. That's why we need

  888. Jesus to be fully

  889. man as well.

  890. Finally,

  891. briefly,

  892. Jesus did not

  893. take our humanity

  894. only for a season.

  895. There wasn't

  896. a clock

  897. that was running

  898. out here.

  899. He didn't ascend

  900. to heaven

  901. like a SpaceX

  902. rocket

  903. from Elosk Musk,

  904. flying,

  905. flying to the moon,

  906. leaving the scaffolding,

  907. all of the

  908. things necessary

  909. to get him there.

  910. Christ,

  911. who stands

  912. victorious

  913. at the right hand

  914. of God the Father,

  915. is still the God-man,

  916. and he'll be so forever.

  917. He descended

  918. from heaven.

  919. This is the wonder

  920. in such a way

  921. that without

  922. even leaving heaven

  923. from his divinity,

  924. he willed

  925. to be born

  926. in the virgin's womb,

  927. to be found

  928. in that cradle,

  929. to do the work

  930. of his Father

  931. on earth,

  932. to be upheld

  933. by the Spirit,

  934. to hang on the cross,

  935. and yet

  936. he continuously

  937. filled the world,

  938. even as he had done

  939. from the beginning.

  940. The mystery

  941. of the incarnation

  942. is one person

  943. and two natures,

  944. divine and human,

  945. but the divine

  946. does not absorb

  947. the human,

  948. does not mix

  949. with it,

  950. nor is it separated

  951. from it,

  952. but from eternity

  953. he has pledged

  954. himself that

  955. for eternity

  956. he will be

  957. enfleshed,

  958. the God-man,

  959. that he might

  960. in his earthly life

  961. and throughout

  962. all of his royal session

  963. be perfectly fitted

  964. to us,

  965. men and women,

  966. for our salvation.

  967. He continues

  968. to have a body,

  969. he will always

  970. be circumscribed

  971. by time and space.

  972. And reflecting

  973. on this again,

  974. the writer

  975. to the Hebrews

  976. writes in chapter 2

  977. verses 17 and 18,

  978. he, Jesus,

  979. was made like

  980. his brothers

  981. in every respect

  982. so that he might

  983. be a merciful

  984. and faithful

  985. high priest

  986. in God's service

  987. to make propitiation

  988. for the sins

  989. of the people

  990. and because he himself

  991. suffered when tempted,

  992. he is,

  993. not he was,

  994. he is,

  995. even now,

  996. he is able

  997. to help all those

  998. who are being tempted.

  999. Time permits us

1000. to say only one thing

  1001. briefly about temptation.

  1002. Jesus faced temptation

  1003. in the wilderness.

  1004. He faced temptation

  1005. in the Garden

  1006. of Gethsemane

  1007. where he agonized

  1008. over the most bitter

  1009. temptation.

  1010. temptation.

  1011. What is his prayer

  1012. there?

  1013. My Father,

  1014. he says,

  1015. let this cup

  1016. pass from me.

1017. That is what I desire.

  1018. Let this cup

  1019. pass from me.

1020. That is what I desire.

1021. We ought not to move

  1022. so quickly

  1023. past those words.

  1024. You know,

  1025. this was a perfectly

  1026. holy desire

  1027. because any other

  1028. desire would have

  1029. been unholy.

  1030. The fully human

  1031. Son,

  1032. Jesus Christ,

  1033. could never

  1034. desire to cry out

  1035. that cry of

  1036. dereliction.

  1037. My God,

  1038. my God,

  1039. why have you

  1040. forsaken me?

  1041. what he desired

  1042. was not that tree.

  1043. Not the cross.

1044. Is there no other way?

1045. And when Adam and Eve

  1046. ate from that tree

  1047. in the midst

  1048. of the garden

  1049. and they saw,

  1050. you know,

  1051. it delights the eyes,

  1052. they doubted the words

  1053. of their Father.

  1054. But Jesus Christ

  1055. was faced

  1056. with another tree.

  1057. And he pled

  1058. with his Father,

  1059. not that tree.

1060. Is there no other way?

  1061. And then he said,

  1062. nevertheless,

  1063. your will be done.

  1064. Because you see,

  1065. Father,

  1066. Son,

  1067. and Spirit

  1068. had from all eternity

  1069. determined

  1070. to create,

  1071. to redeem,

  1072. to gather a church

  1073. for everlasting

  1074. fellowship.

  1075. born out of

  1076. the love of God.

  1077. The love of God.

  1078. And so the incarnate

  1079. Son becomes

  1080. obedient to death,

  1081. even death

  1082. on the cross.

  1083. And have you ever

  1084. wondered why

  1085. there in Luke 22?

  1086. We're told an angel

  1087. is sent to him

  1088. from heaven

  1089. to strengthen him.

  1090. Just imagine that.

  1091. Let all my angels

  1092. worship him.

  1093. at his birth.

  1094. Let one of you

  1095. now go minister

  1096. to him

  1097. in his need.

  1098. Go strengthen him

  1099. in his hour

  1100. of temptation

  1101. to take the cup,

  1102. to drink it

  1103. to its bitter dregs

1104. so that we might enjoy

  1105. the cup of blessing,

  1106. the cup of glory,

  1107. the cup of salvation.

  1108. Knowing all this,

  1109. you see,

1110. how can we not know

  1111. that Jesus Christ,

  1112. loved ones,

  1113. will care for you?

  1114. That he will strengthen

  1115. you in your temptation

1116. when you call on him.

1117. Because he is the one

  1118. who's earned our trust.

1119. Do you ever think about that?

  1120. That he has actually

  1121. earned your trust.

  1122. It's not,

1123. as we heard this morning,

1124. there's an object of faith.

  1125. It's not faith

  1126. in wood fairies.

  1127. He's earned our faith.

  1128. He's earned our trust.

  1129. He's earned our trust.

  1130. And so,

1131. what can we do then

1132. but put our trust in him?

1133. Whether for the first time

1134. or for the thousandth time.

1135. Because there is no other mediator

  1136. between man and God.

1137. There is no other faithful son.

1138. There is no other champion

1139. of his brothers and sisters

1140. than our Lord Jesus Christ,

1141. conceived by the Holy Spirit

1142. and born of the Virgin Mary.

  1143. Amen.
