  1. Father, we confess before you that sometimes we don't want to act like Christians

  2. because we are a bit embarrassed about how the world would view us,

  3. how average Canadians would view us or our friends.

  4. And we confess to that temptation even now.

  5. But Father, in the name of Jesus, not in our strength,

  6. but definitely not in our strength, but only in the name of Jesus,

  7. and washed by him and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

  8. In the name of Jesus, Father, we ask that every demon or evil spirit that is present or arrayed against us,

  9. whether it is in this place or those who are entering into our worship online,

  10. that, Father, in the name of Jesus, every evil spirit will be bound,

  11. that in the name of Jesus, every demon and evil spirit will be silenced,

  12. that in the name of Jesus, these foul spirits will be taken away, not to return.

  13. And Father, in the name of Jesus, we ask that you do not leave us empty,

  14. but that the Holy Spirit would come with might and power and deep conviction into each of our hearts,

  15. that you, Jesus, might rule in our hearts.

  16. We invite, with no qualifications, with no conditions,

  17. we invite, Lord Jesus, you to speak into our hearts and rule in our hearts,

  18. today and always.

  19. And we ask this in the precious name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  20. Amen.

  21. Please be seated.

  22. So now that I've weirded some of you out by that prayer,

  23. although some of you have heard me pray like this before,

  24. Jesus and the Legion of Demons.

  25. That's the sermon today.

  26. Jesus and the Legion of Demons were evil spirits.

  27. So let's turn and look at this text.

  28. It's Mark chapter 5, beginning at verse 1.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  29. It goes from 1 to 20.

  30. And just before, as you're maybe turning to look at it in your Bibles,

  31. just a couple of things.

  32. First of all, I've written a blog about the fact that there are apparent significant contradictions

  33. between Mark and Matthew and Luke.

  34. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are three ancient biographies of Jesus,

  35. either written by eyewitnesses or dependent upon eyewitness testimony.

  36. And all three of these ancient biographies were written when many eyewitnesses were still alive,

  37. to contradict it.

  38. And if you look at the three accounts, you'll see that there are some...

  39. I say that there's, in particular, three often pointed out contradictions.

  40. And I'm not going to talk about that in the sermon.

  41. I've written a blog.

  42. And as I've said before, if I get my blog written before 4.30 on Friday,

  43. you get it on Saturday.

  44. If I get it written after that, you get it on Monday.

  45. So on Monday, I've written a blog,

  46. and I'll talk about those apparent contradictions

  47. and why there aren't, in fact, any contradictions and you can trust the Bible.

  48. But what I'm going to do in this text...

  49. And by the way, this is actually just any...

  50. Those of you who do Bible studies yourselves,

  51. there's sort of two fundamentally different ways

  52. that you can do a Bible study on Matthew, Mark, or Luke.

  53. And because there's quite a few times

  54. when all three of these biographies will talk about the same event.

  55. And so one way to do it is to try to look at all three of them at the same time.

  56. The other way to do it is to sort of fundamentally just look at one of them

  57. and, in a sense, ignore the other two.

  58. Because in every case, they tell the story in such a way

  59. to make points that are significant for the story,

  60. the bigger story that they're telling, like in Matthew or Mark or Luke.

  61. So other than one little time where I'm going to mention something,

  62. fundamentally what I've been doing every week when we preach on Mark

  63. is just looking at Mark

  64. and not trying to bring in pieces of information from the other stories.

  65. We just sort of look.

  66. So I'm not prejudging how I answer the challenges in my blog.

  67. I'm going to preach this.

  68. We're going to look at the story as Mark has written it.

  69. And so here, let's go.

  70. What's just happened is Jesus has just calmed the storm.

  71. He is now in this area, which we'll hear about in a moment,

  72. which is a primarily pagan area.

  73. And at the end of the story, those of you who remember it,

  74. it mentions the Decapolis.

  75. And 67 BC, the area was subdued by the Imperial Roman forces.

  76. And when the area was subdued by the Imperial Roman forces,

  77. they picked this area and had picked 10 cities to be showcases of pagan,

  78. cultural, and religious life.

  79. And so that's the area that Jesus is coming into,

  80. where the 10 principal cities have been set aside by the Roman Empire

  81. now for quite a few years, almost 100 years,

  82. to be a showcase for pagan culture, power, understanding.

  83. And that's the area, a majority pagan area that Jesus has come into.

  84. And here's how it goes.

  85. Verse 1.

  86. They came to the other side.

  87. That's Jesus and the disciples.

  88. They've gotten out.

  89. Jesus has calmed the storm.

  90. They arrive on the other side.

  91. Sorry.

  92. So they came to the other side of the sea,

  93. to the country of the Gerasenes.

  94. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat,

  95. immediately there met him out of the tombs,

  96. a man with an unclean spirit.

  97. And just those of you who are a bit familiar with the Bible,

  98. but some of you aren't,

  99. the Bible sometimes will say unclean spirit,

  100. sometimes an evil spirit, and sometimes demon.

  101. It's just three different ways of referring to the same type of entity.

  102. They're not different types.

  103. They're all the same thing.

  104. So this man has come,

  105. and he has an evil spirit or evil spirits.

  106. And now Mark is going to, in a sense,

  107. take a bit of an aside.

  108. I guess if they were doing a movie of this,

  109. what you would see now is there'd be a bit of a flashback

  110. where you get different images of what the man is,

  111. sort of introducing the man

  112. before it gets back to what's going to happen

  113. between the man and Jesus.

  114. So it sort of all of a sudden switches,

  115. goes a little bit in time to make you familiar

  116. with this particular man who's never named.

  117. So that begins in verse 3.

  118. The man with the evil spirit lived among the tombs,

  119. and no one could bind him anymore,

  120. not even with a chain.

  121. For he had often been bound with shackles and chains,

  122. but he wrenched the chains apart,

  123. and he broke the shackles in pieces.

  124. No one had the strength to subdue him.

  125. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains,

  126. he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.

  127. And in the original language,

  128. the language is quite harsh and brutal.

  129. You sort of get a bit of a feel of it in the English, right?

  130. Where, you know, with chain, bound,

  131. shackles, chains, wrenched, chains,

  132. broke the shackles, the calling out.

  133. You get this sense of a very brutal type of a language.

  134. Now, in this description,

  135. it's very interesting if you think about it for a second.

  136. And, you see,

  137. the Bible provides to us a mirror

  138. of who we are really in our heart.

  139. And in a sense,

  140. constantly the challenge of reading the Bible is,

  141. will you see it as a mirror,

  142. or will you stand and looking at the Bible

  143. sort of as a critic and a judge?

  144. And, obviously,

  145. I'm not saying you shouldn't have questions and all of that.

  146. And if you're,

  147. wouldn't say that you're a Christian

  148. and you're watching this,

  149. it's completely valid to have, like, questions.

  150. I'm going to raise some questions about this in a moment.

  151. But, fundamentally,

  152. it's an opportunity.

  153. This is what Christians believe.

  154. It's a bit of a mirror.

  155. I mean, it's both a window

  156. to see into what the world is really like,

  157. but it's also a mirror to reveal to us

  158. who we are,

  159. what we really are like at the level of our heart.

  160. Now, if you think about it for a second,

  161. this description of what we've just read

  162. is what the average Canadian longs for.

  163. You go, what?

  164. If you think about it,

  165. what I've just read

  166. is what the average Canadian longs for.

  167. This man is very strong.

  168. He can break chains and shackles.

  169. I mean, that's what superheroes movies are about.

  170. That's what gyms are about.

  171. But he's very, very, very strong.

  172. He's feared.

  173. He takes no guff.

  174. There was a little feature the other day

  175. about Bruce Willis movies,

  176. which are still quite remarkably possible.

  177. And one of the things that characterizes Bruce Willis

  178. and other movies like that

  179. is he's a guy who takes no guff.

  180. Now, why is it that we would like a movie like that?

  181. Because in and of ourselves,

  182. I'd like to be the type of person

  183. who takes no guff.

  184. I'd like to be able to go into a meeting

  185. and I'm not going to take any of this type of stuff.

  186. And on one level,

  187. most of us would like to be a little bit feared.

  188. Maybe even sometimes a lot feared.

  189. This guy is independent.

  190. He doesn't care what people think.

  191. I mean, on one level,

  192. it's not what we sort of value in our society,

  193. that we wish that we were the sort of person

  194. who doesn't really care what people think.

  195. And he doesn't care for social conventions.

  196. And on one level,

  197. that speaks very powerfully of North American culture.

  198. We'd like to be the type of person

  199. who doesn't care for social conventions.

  200. Why?

  201. Well, because

  202. we want to be true to our inner life.

  203. And we want to be authentic and autonomous.

  204. And this man is true to his inner life

  205. and he is authentic and autonomous.

  206. He doesn't care about social conventions.

  207. He doesn't take any guff.

  208. He's very, very strong.

  209. And on one level,

  210. to our great horror,

  211. to meet a man who's autonomous

  212. and authentic and self-actualized.

  213. But to our horror,

  214. when we see a character like this in the Bible,

  215. we recoil from him in horror.

  216. Now, this is where you see

  217. the Bible starts to become a bit of a mirror.

  218. What does it say about the way

  219. that Canadians casually talk

  220. about the ideal type of life

  221. if we actually see an example of it

  222. and we would recoil from it in horror?

  223. I mean, most of us would.

  224. In fact, actually,

  225. if we came across somebody in a Bible study,

  226. that said,

  227. whoa, I'd like to be like that guy,

  228. you'd all go like this.

  229. You'd take a bit of a step back

  230. and say,

  231. what, you'd like to be like this?

  232. If it's your boss,

  233. you'd say to yourself,

  234. well, that explains a lot

  235. if your boss

  236. or your boss's boss

  237. thinks like that.

  238. But we would automatically just say,

  239. this person is not a model.

  240. They're alone.

  241. They're unloved.

  242. They're in agony.

  243. They are brutal individuals

  244. who are brutal to others

  245. and they brutalize themselves.

  246. They brutalize themselves.

  247. They brutalize others.

  248. He is a brutal man.

  249. You see,

  250. one of the things

  251. that the gospel constantly does

  252. is it subverts

  253. what we think we want.

  254. But it subverts

  255. what we think we really want

  256. and what our culture tells us

  257. we really want

  258. to fulfill at a deeper level

  259. what we truly want.

  260. Because the fact of the matter is

  261. is we do want to be free.

  262. Don't we?

  263. We want to be free.

  264. We want to be free.

  265. But we also want to be loved

  266. and we don't want to be alone

  267. and we don't want to brutalize others

  268. and be brutalized ourselves.

  269. So the story now is setting up

  270. how is Jesus going to handle this?

  271. How is he going to deal with it?

  272. What's going to be revealed about the man

  273. and what's going to be revealed about Jesus?

  274. So look what happens in verse 6.

  275. And here,

  276. the original language

  277. gives a bit of a stronger sense

  278. because you have this man

  279. who lives where death,

  280. where there is just death

  281. and lives alone.

  282. And the one thing that they will bring in,

  283. if you look at the other accounts,

  284. he's also naked.

  285. That's what I meant by

  286. I didn't care about social conventions

  287. and stuff like that.

  288. That's the one thing

  289. I'm going to bring in

  290. from the other accounts.

  291. This fearsome, brutal, yelling, cut man

  292. who's very, he's cut both in the sense

  293. he's very strong and he's cut

  294. because he cuts himself with stones.

  295. And he sees Jesus.

  296. And in verse 6,

  297. when he saw Jesus from afar,

  298. he ran and fell down before him.

  299. In the original language,

  300. there's this sense

  301. that he's hurling himself at Jesus.

  302. Hurling himself across the distance

  303. to hurling himself at Jesus.

  304. But rather than falling on Jesus,

  305. he falls down.

  306. Jesus doesn't have to defend himself.

  307. The guy just falls down.

  308. Almost like an early example

  309. of being slain in the spirit

  310. for my charismatic friends.

  311. He just falls down.

  312. Before Jesus.

  313. And not only does he fall down

  314. in the original language,

  315. he's prostrate before him.

  316. You know, if you've seen

  317. Roman Catholic ordinations,

  318. the priest through the deacon

  319. getting prostrate on the floor.

  320. That's the guy's prostrate.

  321. He hurls himself at the Jesus.

  322. But before that happens,

  323. he's now prostrate.

  324. Verse 7,

  325. Now, one of the things which is interesting here,

  326. and actually there's two cases in this text

  327. where, to our Muslim friends

  328. who might be watching this,

  329. there's two cases in Mark's gospel

  330. where the text very clearly says

  331. that Jesus is God.

  332. This is one of them.

  333. And it's very interesting

  334. because it says that Jesus is a God

  335. in the context,

  336. in the strongest possible sense

  337. that a pagan would understand it

  338. because it's a primarily pagan expression

  339. that for the pagans who believed

  340. that there were many gods,

  341. you know, that there was, you know,

  342. Hercules and Zeus

  343. and all these different gods,

  344. but they had this sense

  345. that higher than all of the gods

  346. and goddesses that they were aware of,

  347. that higher than all of those

  348. and however high you go,

  349. there is eventually

  350. an ultimately most high God.

  351. And the demon-possessed man

  352. is saying,

  353. Jesus, you are the son

  354. of the most high God.

  355. And what that is meaning is,

  356. of course, it means that Jesus

  357. is of the same nature

  358. as the most high God

  359. because that's, you know,

  360. I have, God has blessed me

  361. with nine children

  362. and all of the babies

  363. have human nature.

  364. Right?

  365. That's just how it is.

  366. Cats have kittens.

  367. They share the same nature.

  368. So this is a very high claim of God.

  369. Remember, they're in a primarily pagan area.

  370. He uses pagan categories,

  371. but he says that Jesus

  372. is fundamentally God.

  373. He says,

  374. what do you have to do with me,

  375. Jesus, son of the most high God?

  376. In the original language as well,

  377. it's even a stronger thing.

  378. What do you have to do with me?

  379. In the original language,

  380. it's expressing,

  381. the demon-possessed man

  382. is expressing that normally

  383. somebody like Jesus

  384. doesn't have anything to do

  385. with somebody like him.

  386. It would be a little bit

  387. as if on the drive home

  388. or when I get home today,

  389. I get a call

  390. and it's Justin Trudeau.

  391. And I would say,

  392. now maybe you guys get,

  393. some of you guys get called

  394. by Justin Trudeau all the time,

  395. right?

  396. But for me,

  397. I would view it as a prank.

  398. And after I did a couple of tests,

  399. et cetera,

  400. eventually became clear

  401. and Justin Trudeau called me,

  402. in a sense,

  403. I'm thinking,

  404. what does Justin Trudeau want with me?

  405. Like,

  406. we inhabit

  407. completely different spheres

  408. that have nothing to do

  409. with each other.

  410. So what on earth

  411. would somebody like him,

  412. like Justin Trudeau,

  413. want to have

  414. to talk with somebody like me?

  415. And that's the same type

  416. of idea here.

  417. The demon-possessed man

  418. is saying,

  419. son of the most high God,

  420. Jesus,

  421. you and I are in completely,

  422. and it's completely true,

  423. right?

  424. They are in completely

  425. and utterly

  426. different spheres.

  427. And now,

  428. demons lie.

  429. Of course,

  430. in a sense,

  431. he would know

  432. that ultimately

  433. God is sovereign,

  434. but he tries to talk

  435. as if it's not something

  436. that generally speaking

  437. the most high God

  438. would want.

  439. But that's what's happening.

  440. And the other thing about it

  441. is it's both a type

  442. of bravido,

  443. you know,

  444. I tell you,

  445. you have to swear by God,

  446. you're not going to hurt me.

  447. It's a type of bravido

  448. and whining,

  449. all interspersed

  450. at the same time.

  451. Like a type of groveling,

  452. whining with bravido

  453. intermingled,

  454. all in this short

  455. type of thing

  456. as if they're big and tough

  457. and you can tell Jesus

  458. what to do

  459. at the same time

  460. you're cringing

  461. and saying,

  462. don't hurt me

  463. and acknowledging

  464. that you're about

  465. to get your butt kicked,

  466. so to speak,

  467. and there's nothing

  468. you can do to stop it.

  469. That's the Greek,

  470. getting your butt kicked.

  471. Sorry,

  472. never mind,

  473. that's not what

  474. the Greek says.

  475. Anyway,

  476. so,

  477. now one of the things

  478. which is really interesting

  479. about this text

  480. and it's a,

  481. it's a real challenge

  482. to those who go to the church

  483. and those who might

  484. call themselves Christians

  485. is that this demon-possessed man,

  486. he knows Jesus,

  487. he passed the theology test

  488. way better than any of the disciples,

  489. but it doesn't have

  490. any type of a carryover

  491. into repentance

  492. or openness to Jesus.

  493. So there's two types of things

  494. that are going on here.

  495. Just because you can have

  496. very,

  497. very clear knowledge

  498. about certain types of things

  499. doesn't mean that it necessarily

  500. has affected your heart.

  501. Now,

  502. by heart,

  503. I don't just mean emotions,

  504. I mean the very center

  505. of who you are

  506. where your emotions,

  507. your imagination,

  508. your aesthetic sense,

  509. your intellect,

  510. your will,

  511. that sort of central place

  512. in the human being

  513. where all of these things

  514. flow out of

  515. that is so involved

  516. in a personal relationship

  517. with like a friend

  518. or if it's love,

  519. romantic love,

  520. where there's a sense

  521. of a turning

  522. of that whole self

  523. towards the other person

  524. and openness of that self

  525. to the other person.

  526. And so what you see here

  527. is you see both

  528. very,

  529. very accurate knowledge

  530. of Jesus

  531. but at the same time

  532. absolutely no desire

  533. for a relationship

  534. and no interest whatsoever

  535. in anything like repentance.

  536. And there's going to be

  537. an asking for mercy

  538. but it's not really

  539. the type of mercy

  540. that's connected

  541. to knowing

  542. and being known.

  543. So how does Jesus respond

  544. to this request

  545. don't torment me?

  546. you know,

  547. you're the son

  548. of the most high God

  549. and the fact

  550. that this demon-possessed man

  551. clearly knows Jesus

  552. but shows no,

  553. the demons show no

  554. hesitation.

  555. They're in a sense

  556. convicted,

  557. convinced demons.

  558. You don't want to change terms.

  559. How's Jesus going to respond to it?

  560. Well, let's see

  561. what happens in verse 9.

  562. And Jesus asked him

  563. so there's a bit of a pause

  564. from the casting out.

  565. Jesus asked him

  566. what is your name?

  567. The man replied

  568. my name is Legion

  569. for we

  570. are many.

  571. And he

  572. begged him earnestly

  573. not to send them

  574. out of the country.

  575. I'm going to read that text again.

  576. It's a very, very

  577. interesting text.

  578. Now,

  579. yeah,

  580. I'm going to say it.

  581. All week I sort of

  582. batted my mind

  583. back and forth

  584. whether I'm going to say

  585. anything about this.

  586. I understand

  587. that we live in a time

  588. when many, many people

  589. are,

  590. they wouldn't say

  591. that they're confused

  592. at all about their identity

  593. but that it's a very common thing

  594. for people to want to

  595. change their pronouns

  596. to reflect the fact

  597. that they believe

  598. that their internal identity

  599. is significantly different

  600. than their biology.

  601. And I understand

  602. that that's very

  603. prevalent.

  604. I understand

  605. that for some people

  606. it's a welcome thing

  607. and for others

  608. it's not a welcome thing.

  609. and I understand

  610. that for some

  611. to move towards

  612. their chosen identity

  613. is a,

  614. for them

  615. that's how they understand

  616. liberation.

  617. And I understand

  618. that many, many people

  619. want to be able

  620. to try to say

  621. that there's no such thing

  622. of,

  623. all this dualism

  624. and all is a bad thing

  625. and I understand

  626. all of that.

  627. I really do

  628. and I think

  629. I understand

  630. a tiny little bit

  631. about the emotional

  632. and imaginative

  633. longing for these types

  634. of things

  635. and to see it increase

  636. that they see it

  637. as a bit of a sense

  638. of liberation.

  639. And I'm definitely

  640. not saying

  641. that people who think

  642. this are demon-possessed,

  643. I'm not saying

  644. this at all.

  645. But for those here

  646. or those who might

  647. be online

  648. watching this,

  649. the very, very first time,

  650. this is quite a few years ago,

  651. the very first time

  652. I met somebody

  653. who wanted me

  654. to call them they

  655. as their pronoun,

  656. I have to confess

  657. the first thing

  658. that came to my mind

  659. was this story.

  660. It's the very first thing

  661. that came to my mind.

  662. And I think,

  663. amongst others,

  664. if those of you

  665. who are watching

  666. and you sense

  667. that your Christian friend

  668. might not want

  669. to use a word

  670. like they

  671. as your pronoun,

  672. I mean,

  673. I guess it just really

  674. depends on whether

  675. you'd like to have

  676. a relationship with them

  677. or whether you think

  678. Christians just have

  679. to automatically agree

  680. with you,

  681. but I don't think

  682. my reaction

  683. is completely,

  684. like I think

  685. for Christians

  686. who are well-instructed,

  687. this story

  688. and the pronoun,

  689. there's just something

  690. that doesn't fit

  691. with it very well.

  692. Now,

  693. whether we can have

  694. a conversation about that,

  695. I don't know

  696. if anybody will contact me

  697. about it or whatever,

  698. that's a whole other thing.

  699. Part of the thing

  700. we need to pray about

  701. in our society

  702. is that we can start

  703. to have civil conversations

  704. again,

  705. because that's being lost.

  706. We can't have

  707. civil conversations.

  708. People yell,

  709. and sometimes

  710. we Christians yell,

  711. and when we Christians yell,

  712. we need to repent of it.

  713. We should not be

  714. the best yellers.

  715. We should be yellers

  716. in repentance

  717. and recovery

  718. from yelling.

  719. So,

  720. that's just a bit

  721. of an aside note.

  722. I struggle

  723. but that's really true.

  724. The very first time

  725. I heard that pronoun,

  726. the very first time

  727. I ever heard of it,

  728. that's the first thing

  729. that popped into my mind.

  730. Do you realize

  731. if I was to say that,

  732. the background for that?

  733. Anyway,

  734. it's very,

  735. look again at the pronouns.

  736. It's very interesting,

  737. right?

  738. And Jesus asked him,

  739. what is your name?

  740. The man.

  741. And in a sense,

  742. whether it's the man,

  743. but it's not really

  744. the man who replies.

  745. He replied,

  746. that's singular,

  747. but then says,

  748. my name is Legion,

  749. for we are many.

  750. And he begged him earnestly.

  751. That is,

  752. the demons

  753. beg Jesus earnestly

  754. not to send them

  755. out of the country.

  756. whether the Legion,

  757. the demons

  758. are telling the truth

  759. and there really are

  760. close to 6,000 demons

  761. inside of the man or not,

  762. it doesn't really matter.

  763. It's obviously

  764. to speak to a Jewish person

  765. who's been conquered

  766. by the Roman legions,

  767. a militaristic,

  768. imperialistic,

  769. and threatening name.

  770. And it is revelatory

  771. in this text

  772. that Christians,

  773. the Bible teaches

  774. that it is possible

  775. to be so demonized

  776. that you can be possessed

  777. by an evil spirit

  778. and you can be so demonized

  779. that in fact

  780. you can have more than

  781. one evil spirit

  782. dwell within you.

  783. Now some of you

  784. are going to say,

  785. oh,

  786. George,

  787. time out,

  788. time out.

  789. George,

  790. what are you?

  791. Some medieval monk

  792. craves because

  793. you haven't had enough sex?

  794. Reading stupid,

  795. fanciful things

  796. and being scared

  797. of people in the dark?

  798. Like George,

  799. this guy is just

  800. mentally ill.

  801. There's a few other things

  802. maybe some people

  803. are thinking.

  804. And all I'll say

  805. about the mentally ill

  806. claim is this.

  807. If you,

  808. I think it was

  809. the last sermon

  810. I did just before

  811. in December,

  812. but it's in Mark

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  813. chapter 3

  814. and what you see

  815. in Mark chapter 3

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  816. is very interesting

  817. is that the Bible

  818. understands the distinction

  819. between mental illness

  820. and demon possession.

  821. The Bible itself

  822. makes that distinction

  823. and it's a distinction

  824. that's been lost

  825. and so what's being claimed here

  826. is not that the man

  827. is mentally ill

  828. but the man is demon possessed

  829. and we're going to see

  830. that very clearly

  831. in a few verses

  832. as the Bible

  833. brings it home

  834. that it's talking

  835. about demonization

  836. to the point of possession

  837. not mental illness.

  838. And then the other thing

  839. you might say

  840. Jojojojojo

  841. well I didn't know

  842. they understood

  843. the difference

  844. between those things

  845. but George

  846. what this text

  847. is talking about

  848. is just completely impossible.

  849. It's just completely impossible.

  850. And often in my sermons

  851. I try to have a bit

  852. of an apologetics element

  853. to it

  854. but at this time

  855. I'm not.

  856. Amongst other things

  857. there's the time reason

  858. but all I'm going to say

  859. is this

  860. this text

  861. as I said

  862. is an ancient biography

  863. story of Jesus.

  864. It was written

  865. by a man

  866. who might have

  867. been a direct eyewitness

  868. but it's very clearly

  869. based on eyewitness testimony

  870. and that's what it's claiming

  871. and it's written

  872. while many eyewitnesses

  873. were alive

  874. and if you read

  875. the whole thing

  876. the language

  877. as I've said before

  878. is never like

  879. once upon a time

  880. or anything like that

  881. it's always talking

  882. of the language

  883. of history

  884. that's the way it is

  885. at the level

  886. of the original language

  887. and the book

  888. understands the difference

  889. between like parables

  890. and metaphors

  891. and stories like that

  892. because we've just seen

  893. a whole pile of them

  894. and we'll see more

  895. in a moment.

  896. We just saw

  897. a little while ago

  898. two sermons ago

  899. there were a combination

  900. of parables

  901. slash aphorisms

  902. slash metaphors

  903. slash and then

  904. some parables

  905. so that Mark

  906. understands the distinction

  907. between these things

  908. just because

  909. he didn't know

  910. never heard of

  911. TikTok or Instagram

  912. doesn't mean he's stupid

  913. and he understands

  914. these things

  915. and this is written

  916. and the claim is

  917. that this actually happened

  918. that's the claim

  919. like you might say

  920. well it was just a lie

  921. or something like that

  922. you know

  923. and then we can have

  924. a discussion about it

  925. but you have to understand

  926. the claim is

  927. that this actually happened

  928. and in a sense

  929. what I'm going to show you

  930. in a moment

  931. is that Mark

  932. doubles down

  933. on the historical nature

  934. of this

  935. that it actually happened

  936. he's going to double down

  937. on it

  938. in a couple of moments

  939. and so the claim

  940. of the text

  941. is that this is actually

  942. what happened

  943. and obviously

  944. if it happened

  945. then you and I

  946. live in a world

  947. that is very different

  948. than is described

  949. by CBC

  950. and Instagram

  951. and Ottawa U

  952. and the Supreme Court

  953. of Canada

  954. and the Parliament

  955. of Canada

  956. we live in a very

  957. very different world

  958. and it's talked about

  959. by the elites

  960. in this country

  961. and I don't want

  962. to ever encourage

  963. you to live

  964. in a fantasy world

  965. I would like you

  966. as a Christian

  967. to live in the true world

  968. the real world

  969. as it really is

  970. and Mark

  971. is claiming

  972. that this is

  973. what the real world

  974. is like

  975. that there are

  976. in fact beings

  977. like evil spirits

  978. and they can

  979. affect

  980. human beings

  981. and they can

  982. in a sense

  983. demonize human beings

  984. even to the point

  985. of possession

  986. and

  987. there's another thing

  988. to pause about here

  989. before we see

  990. what Jesus

  991. is going to do

  992. remember I said

  993. at the beginning

  994. or close to the beginning

  995. some of you haven't

  996. maybe you've already

  997. fallen asleep

  998. but in some ways

  999. if you think about it

  1000. what this man

  1001. is described as

  1002. is what most Canadians

1003. would like to be like

  1004. except

  1005. that's not what

1006. they'd like to be like

  1007. but he embodies

  1008. what they like

  1009. it's just frightening

  1010. potentially for Canadians

  1011. to realize

  1012. that's what I

  1013. sort of like

1014. I'd like to be strong

  1015. take no guff

  1016. not be controlled

  1017. by social conventions

1018. be true to my inner self

  1019. be autonomous

  1020. be authentic

  1021. all of those things

1022. but when you see this

  1023. you say

  1024. no no no no

  1025. okay

  1026. obviously something's

  1027. missing

  1028. in my list

  1029. of desires

  1030. and fulfillments

  1031. the other thing

  1032. that this text

  1033. is showing

  1034. is that this man

  1035. perfectly expresses

  1036. the average Canadian

  1037. sphere of Christianity

  1038. I mean

  1039. how is it

  1040. that the average Canadian

  1041. or many Canadians

  1042. think of Christianity

  1043. they think of things

  1044. like the handmaid's tale

  1045. that if you come

  1046. close to Jesus

  1047. you're going to

  1048. lose your individuality

  1049. you're going to

  1050. be brutalized

  1051. you're going to

  1052. turn into a person

  1053. who brutalizes others

  1054. in fact

  1055. I don't know

  1056. if anybody

  1057. who's involved

  1058. deeply in the

  1059. trans movement

  1060. has watched this

  1061. but they might think

  1062. that what I said

  1063. earlier was brutalizing

  1064. to trans people

1065. and so in some ways

  1066. what you see

  1067. in this man

  1068. is how the average

  1069. Canadian

  1070. thinks

  1071. like that

  1072. the Christianity

  1073. that there's actually

  1074. something

  1075. many many Canadians

  1076. think there's something

  1077. evil about it

  1078. that it will destroy

  1079. your individuality

  1080. that it will

  1081. flatten you

1082. it will hollow you out

  1083. it will brutalize you

  1084. it will make you

  1085. the type of person

  1086. who brutalizes others

1087. but one of the things

  1088. that this text

  1089. is doing

  1090. is saying

  1091. you were right

  1092. to not want to

  1093. go like that

1094. and if you come across

  1095. an ideology

  1096. or a religion

  1097. or a spirituality

  1098. that leads you

  1099. in the direction

  1100. run as fast

  1101. as you can

  1102. from it

  1103. but what

1104. is going to be shown

  1105. in this text

  1106. is this is not

  1107. what Christianity is

  1108. Christianity

  1109. is the antidote

  1110. to this

1111. and it's going to be

  1112. shown

  1113. throughout the entire

  1114. rest of the gospel

  1115. Jesus is going to

  1116. deal with this guy

  1117. and as the story

  1118. goes on

  1119. what you actually

  1120. see is that

  1121. Jesus is going to

  1122. be everything

  1123. the complete opposite

  1124. of everything

  1125. that a demon does

  1126. and that when you

  1127. respond to Christianity

  1128. and you respond

  1129. not respond to Christianity

  1130. when you respond

  1131. to the gospel

  1132. when you ask Jesus

  1133. to be your savior

  1134. and your lord

1135. you see that there is

  1136. a this is a man

  1137. who is the perfect

  1138. penitent

  1139. that is the perfect

  1140. sacrifice

  1141. that embodies

  1142. perfect love

  1143. and he does

  1144. an act of

  1145. perfect love

  1146. setting aside

  1147. his power

  1148. and prerogatives

  1149. and all of those

  1150. things

  1151. the opposite

  1152. of what religion

  1153. does

  1154. and the opposite

  1155. of

  1156. he does all

  1157. of that

  1158. so by the end

  1159. of the story

  1160. you're in your

  1161. right mind

  1162. that you're

  1163. self-possessed

  1164. that your uniqueness

  1165. can finally start

  1166. to come out

  1167. and to flower

  1168. and to flourish

  1169. that you can have

  1170. a re-establishment

  1171. of community

  1172. and all

  1173. in the context

  1174. of being rightly

  1175. related to the true

  1176. and living God

  1177. the triune God

  1178. so see what happens

  1179. so they've asked

  1180. that Jesus

  1181. the demons

  1182. have revealed

  1183. that whether there's

  1184. just five

1185. pretending to be a legion

1186. or whether there really is

  1187. close to six thousand

  1188. whatever it is

  1189. we never know

  1190. that this man

  1191. is controlled

  1192. by many demons

  1193. so what happens

  1194. verse 11

  1195. now a great herd

  1196. of pigs

  1197. was feeding there

  1198. on the hillside

  1199. and they

  1200. that's the demons

  1201. begged Jesus

  1202. saying send us

  1203. to the pigs

  1204. notice this

  1205. let us

  1206. enter them

  1207. let us

  1208. enter them

  1209. they sort of

  1210. acknowledge

  1211. they don't actually

  1212. have power

  1213. so Jesus

  1214. gave them

  1215. permission

  1216. and the unclean

  1217. spirits

  1218. came out

  1219. and entered

  1220. the pigs

  1221. and the herd

  1222. numbering about

  1223. two thousand

  1224. rushed down

  1225. the steep bank

  1226. into the sea

  1227. and drowned

  1228. in the sea

  1229. you have a very

  1230. very powerful

  1231. graphic image

  1232. of the tremendous

  1233. chaotic

  1234. evil

  1235. life

  1236. denying

  1237. power

  1238. that was inside

  1239. this one man

  1240. inside this

  1241. one man

  1242. was such

  1243. rage

  1244. and hatred

  1245. of creation

  1246. and hatred

  1247. of life

  1248. and hatred

  1249. of God

  1250. that whether

  1251. it was two

  1252. or six thousand

  1253. it flows

  1254. into the pigs

  1255. and it

  1256. hurls them

  1257. hurls them

  1258. to their death

  1259. and destruction

  1260. and doom

  1261. mental illness

  1262. isn't contagious

  1263. this is the part

  1264. of the story

  1265. that shows

  1266. that it's not

  1267. mental illness

  1268. if you didn't

  1269. know that

  1270. you can sit

  1271. beside a man

  1272. or a woman

  1273. who has mental

  1274. illness

  1275. and it's not

  1276. contagious

  1277. you won't

  1278. get it

  1279. and we should

  1280. minister to

  1281. people

  1282. and love

  1283. people

  1284. who are

  1285. mentally ill

  1286. and our

  1287. congregation

  1288. has people

  1289. who suffer

  1290. from mental

  1291. illness

  1292. and there

  1293. are my

  1294. brother and

  1295. sister in

  1296. Christ

  1297. now

  1298. how do the

  1299. people respond

  1300. and how did

  1301. the man

  1302. what's the man

  1303. like afterwards

  1304. well that's what

  1305. goes on in the

  1306. story next

  1307. the herdsmen

  1308. have seen all

  1309. of this

  1310. it wasn't just

  1311. that there was

  1312. this man

  1313. and Jesus

  1314. and his

  1315. twelve

  1316. disciples

  1317. but there's

  1318. herdsmen

  1319. there with

  1320. the pigs

  1321. in verse 14

  1322. all of a sudden

  1323. we realize

  1324. that this

  1325. encounter

  1326. between Jesus

  1327. and the

  1328. demoniac

  1329. has been

  1330. witnessed

  1331. by the

  1332. locals

  1333. and in

  1334. verse 14

  1335. the herdsmen

  1336. flee

  1337. they flee

  1338. pigs go

  1339. this way

  1340. to their

  1341. death

  1342. herdsmen

  1343. go this

  1344. way

  1345. the herdsmen

  1346. fled and

  1347. told it in

  1348. the city

  1349. and in the

  1350. country

  1351. and people

  1352. came to

  1353. see what

  1354. it was

  1355. that had

  1356. happened

  1357. in other

  1358. words

  1359. they didn't

  1360. just believe

  1361. these herdsmen

  1362. because the

  1363. herdsmen

  1364. said it

  1365. these people

  1366. you know

  1367. once again

  1368. just because

  1369. they don't

  1370. have

  1371. instagram

  1372. doesn't

  1373. mean

  1374. they're

  1375. stupid

  1376. doesn't

  1377. mean

  1378. they're

  1379. gullible

  1380. they go

  1381. probably

  1382. nah

  1383. that didn't

  1384. happen

  1385. come on

  1386. really

  1387. that's

  1388. impossible

  1389. like what

  1390. let's

  1391. go check

  1392. it out

  1393. you know

  1394. these guys

  1395. have been

  1396. drinking

  1397. too much

  1398. cheap

  1399. wine

  1400. or whatever

  1401. they all

  1402. got drunk

  1403. they don't

  1404. know what

  1405. they're

  1406. talking about

  1407. they go

  1408. to look

  1409. in verse

  1410. 15

  1411. and they

  1412. came to

  1413. Jesus

  1414. and saw

  1415. the demon

  1416. possessed

  1417. man

  1418. and the

  1419. one who

  1420. had had

  1421. the legion

  1422. sitting there

1423. clothed and in his right mind

  1424. and they were afraid

1425. and those who had seen it

1426. described to them what had happened

1427. to the demon possessed man

  1428. and to the pigs

1429. and they began to beg Jesus

1430. to depart from their region

1431. now remember I said that

  1432. Jesus

1433. Mark has written this gospel

1434. to emphasize that this in fact

  1435. really happened

1436. and here's how we can see part of that

  1437. that's what he's doing

1438. you see he's written this gospel

1439. this biography at a time

1440. when there were so many eyewitnesses around

1441. and what he's saying here is

1442. listen if you don't believe me

1443. the early readers of this

1444. obviously we can't go back in time

1445. like if you just picture what it was like

  1446. you go there

1447. and what they're going to see

1448. is they're going to see

1449. 2,000 dead pigs floating in the water

1450. or maybe washed up on the beach

  1451. 2,000

1452. and they would have been there

  1453. rotting

  1454. for weeks

  1455. the birds of prey

  1456. I mean the birds

  1457. the vultures and others

1458. that would have come there

1459. this would have been something

1460. that was there for weeks

  1461. and people came

1462. and so this is the part of the story here

  1463. you see that

1464. Mark is in a sense saying

  1465. this did happen

  1466. this happened

1467. like you don't believe me

1468. go travel to this area

1469. I've given you enough descriptions

1470. that you can figure out where it is

1471. and go talk to the locals

  1472. and they'll say

  1473. I don't know what it was

  1474. I don't think it's

1475. I would have said it was impossible

  1476. but there's no question

1477. the guy was in his right mind

1478. this guy that was like a main

  1479. like a evil guy

1480. he's in his right mind

  1481. and there's the whole

  1482. the water

  1483. just all these pigs

  1484. it's like

  1485. just

  1486. I don't know

  1487. 100 meters

  1488. 300 meters

  1489. 400 meters

  1490. into the water

  1491. these dead pigs

1492. they ended up floating around

  1493. they

  1494. it's a very very public miracle

  1495. and the man

1496. look again at how the man is described

  1497. it's in verse 15

  1498. they came to Jesus

1499. and saw the demon possessed man

1500. the one who had had the legion

  1501. sitting there clothed

1502. and in his right mind

  1503. he was sitting there

  1504. he's calm

1505. he had his clothes on

1506. he was in his right mind

  1507. you see deeper

1508. than wanting to be true

  1509. to your inner self

1510. you want to be in your right mind

1511. and you want to be unique

1512. and you want to be an individual

1513. and that's the way God designed you and me

1514. but we want to be unique

  1515. and an individual

  1516. in such a way

1517. that it doesn't brutalize other people

  1518. where love is possible

  1519. and community is possible

1520. and that's what we see here

  1521. this man

  1522. it's a very powerful image

1523. just drawn in a couple of short words

1524. and it's very very interesting

1525. that the people wanted Jesus to flee

  1526. you see

1527. the pagan gods of those days

  1528. they raped

  1529. they lied

  1530. they murdered

1531. and people were to be their slaves

1532. and you would try to navigate

  1533. the distance

  1534. and the issues

  1535. of the different gods

  1536. and the different demands

1537. to try to sort of get out

  1538. from under their notice

  1539. or to

  1540. somehow or another trick

  1541. or coerce them

1542. into doing something for you

  1543. that you wanted

  1544. and it's a very fundamental principle

  1545. of religion

  1546. and spirituality

  1547. that the god

  1548. or the goddesses

  1549. or the all

  1550. wants you

  1551. to lose your identity

  1552. and to die

  1553. for its glory

  1554. but here we see

  1555. that Jesus

  1556. with all the power

  1557. in the world

  1558. uses his power

  1559. to die

  1560. he in a sense

  1561. goes the exact opposite

  1562. of what the demons

  1563. and what religious wants

  1564. and what our self

  1565. and our society wants

1566. which is to accrue power

  1567. and it's as if

  1568. you know

  1569. we're pulling back

  1570. and pulling back

  1571. and pulling like that

  1572. and he knows

  1573. that the only way

1574. that we can be free

  1575. is in a sense

  1576. that he does

  1577. what we cannot do

1578. which is to take this power

1579. and go all the way back

  1580. and go even deeper

  1581. to the full extent

  1582. of the problem

  1583. that the power causes

  1584. and he goes

  1585. and empties himself

  1586. and empties himself

  1587. and empties himself

  1588. even to the point

1589. of dying on the cross

  1590. you can't be more

  1591. powerless than dead

  1592. you can't be poorer

  1593. than dead

  1594. and the mystery

  1595. of the bible

  1596. tells us

  1597. that Jesus goes

  1598. and takes within death

  1599. all of the things

  1600. all of the punishments

  1601. all of the horrors

  1602. of death

  1603. with nothing left out

  1604. whatever that means

  1605. because we don't know

  1606. what that means

  1607. but whatever it means

  1608. he experiences

  1609. all of that

  1610. out of love

  1611. for you and me

  1612. that when we put

  1613. our faith and trust

  1614. in him

  1615. we begin a journey

  1616. of becoming

  1617. in our right mind

  1618. and being properly clothed

  1619. and being loved

  1620. by almighty God

  1621. and being able

  1622. to sit in peace

  1623. with almighty God

  1624. and with others

  1625. in peace

  1626. and freedom

  1627. and uniqueness

  1628. and love

  1629. and safety

  1630. and security

  1631. and affection

  1632. and delight

  1633. and that is why

  1634. he died for you

  1635. the complete opposite

  1636. of a demon

  1637. now some of you

  1638. might say

  1639. George

  1640. that's a very wonderful story

  1641. but I think I'm like

  1642. that guy

  1643. because you see

  1644. that guy

  1645. he didn't

1646. I remember what you said

1647. when you read it earlier

  1648. he doesn't get to

1649. he doesn't get to stay

  1650. with Jesus

  1651. and I think that's my worry

  1652. you know

  1653. I've tried different religions

  1654. I've tried different

  1655. spiritualities

  1656. and you know

  1657. they just don't stick

1658. and at the end of the day

  1659. I just think there's something

  1660. maybe broken or wrong

  1661. about me

1662. that this could never be

  1663. possibly true about me

1664. and that's sort of George

  1665. what the story shows

  1666. but that's not what

1667. the story shows at all

1668. let me show how it finishes

1669. and I'll tell you about

1670. something that's going to happen

  1671. in two chapters

  1672. look at verse 18

  1673. as Jesus was getting

  1674. into the boat

  1675. the man

  1676. who had been possessed

  1677. with demons

  1678. begged Jesus

1679. that he might be with him

  1680. and here's our fear

1681. and Jesus did not permit him

1682. and I've run out of time

  1683. but this doesn't mean

1684. that the man is rejected

  1685. by Jesus

  1686. this man becomes

  1687. the first evangelist

1688. he becomes the first evangelist

1689. he is given a mission

  1690. and a purpose

  1691. and a commission

  1692. and with great affection

  1693. Jesus says to him

1694. go home to your friends

  1695. and tell them

  1696. how much the Lord

  1697. has done for you

1698. and how he has had mercy on you

  1699. and since that's

  1700. every one of us

  1701. probably nobody here

  1702. has been delivered

  1703. from demons

1704. but maybe one of you have

  1705. I don't know

  1706. somebody watching

  1707. maybe you have been

  1708. had an exorcism

  1709. performed on you

  1710. and have been delivered

  1711. from demonic oppression

1712. at a very deep level

  1713. but all of us

  1714. can bear witness

  1715. about how much

1716. the Lord has done for us

1717. and even if we can't think

1718. of how much he's done for us

  1719. we can tell

1720. how he has had mercy on us

1721. how he has had mercy on me

  1722. verse 20

  1723. and he went away

  1724. and began to proclaim

  1725. in the Decapolis

  1726. how much Jesus

  1727. had done for him

  1728. and everyone marveled

1729. now it's very very interesting

  1730. because in the Bible

  1731. one of the things

  1732. that the Bible

  1733. wants to make clear

1734. is that there's only one hero

  1735. and that is Jesus

  1736. one of the things

  1737. I regularly pray

1738. with the people up front

  1739. I didn't do it today

  1740. but it's a very regular thing

1741. I pray that at the end

  1742. of the service

  1743. people won't want

1744. to know more about me

  1745. but know about

  1746. more

  1747. but want to know

  1748. more about Jesus

  1749. and I obviously

  1750. have an ego

  1751. and a flesh

  1752. and obviously

  1753. I like being admired

  1754. and obviously

1755. I like all of those things

  1756. but really

  1757. my deepest desire

  1758. is that nobody

1759. wants to talk to me

  1760. afterwards

  1761. they want to spend

  1762. time with Jesus

  1763. and I confess

  1764. in my flesh

  1765. because I'm a fallen

  1766. human being

  1767. that people

  1768. I might sort of

  1769. be bothered

  1770. if somebody says

  1771. about this wonderful

  1772. thing they heard

1773. a couple of months ago

  1774. and it's what I said

  1775. and they don't remember

1776. that it came from me

1777. but at the end of the day

  1778. what I really

  1779. really really really

  1780. do want

1781. and I want to grow

  1782. in wanting even more

  1783. is that they just

1784. they just love Jesus more

  1785. and they haven't realized

  1786. that I had anything

1787. to do with their love

  1788. and that would be

  1789. a good thing

  1790. that would be

  1791. a good thing

1792. and so one of the ways

1793. that the gospel models this

  1794. is this story ends

  1795. this is so cool

  1796. this story ends

  1797. that Jesus

  1798. in the Decapolis

  1799. he does the miracle

  1800. he the people

  1801. all say

  1802. get away from us

  1803. Jesus

  1804. and and they

  1805. and Jesus leaves

1806. and there's only one guy

  1807. left who likes Jesus

  1808. and in chapter 7

1809. Jesus comes to the region

  1810. again

  1811. and he speaks

  1812. and there's 4,000 people

  1813. there to hear him

  1814. and Jesus performs

  1815. the miracle

  1816. of feeding 4,000

  1817. right where this guy

  1818. had gone

  1819. Jesus did not

  1820. reject the guy

  1821. there are no little

  1822. people in Jesus' life

1823. if you come to know

  1824. Jesus as your Savior

  1825. and Lord

  1826. you are special

  1827. you are unique

  1828. you are deeply loved

  1829. and you will be

  1830. deeply loved

  1831. for all eternity

  1832. and part of

  1833. sanctification

  1834. is beginning to know

  1835. and experience that

  1836. now on this side

  1837. of the grave

1838. Jesus took this one guy

  1839. and he started

  1840. to tell people

  1841. about what Jesus

  1842. had done for him

  1843. and how mercy

1844. had been shown to him

  1845. and whether it was

1846. months or a year later

  1847. the Bible doesn't give

  1848. chronology

  1849. 4,000 people came

  1850. more than 4,000 people

  1851. came to hear Jesus

  1852. the next time

  1853. let's stand

  1854. bow our heads

  1855. in prayer

  1856. Father we give you

  1857. thanks and praise

  1858. for Jesus

1859. we thank and praise you

  1860. that

1861. he did what we could not

  1862. he disentangled himself

  1863. from power

  1864. and prestige

  1865. he did those things

1866. not have a hold of him

  1867. those things

  1868. that we wish

  1869. that we could do

  1870. but can't

  1871. he did for us

  1872. and that he did

  1873. the complete

1874. he used all of his power

  1875. to do the opposite

  1876. of what we expect

1877. power to be used for

  1878. he used his power

  1879. to resist temptation

1880. to live a sinless life

1881. and to die upon the cross

1882. as a sacrifice for sin

1883. so that I can be made right

  1884. with God

  1885. that anyone who puts

  1886. their trust and faith

  1887. in Jesus

1888. can be made right with you

  1889. and we give you

  1890. thanks and praise

  1891. Father

  1892. that when we receive

  1893. the Jesus

  1894. into our lives

  1895. that he will begin

  1896. to work within us

  1897. to put us

  1898. in our right mind

  1899. to put us

  1900. in our right mind

  1901. to heal us

1902. that we might be free

1903. as you intended us to be

  1904. and so Father

  1905. we ask that you

  1906. deliver us

  1907. from whatever

  1908. fear we have

  1909. of drawing close

  1910. to Christ

  1911. or surrendering

  1912. to him

  1913. that you would

  1914. deliver us

  1915. Father

  1916. from these fears

  1917. we confess

  1918. that we're not

  1919. really fearing you

  1920. we're fearing demons

  1921. and help us

1922. to have a great love

  1923. for Jesus

  1924. and trust

  1925. and know

  1926. that as he

  1927. becomes more precious

  1928. and real

  1929. and as his work

  1930. and his promises

  1931. become more precious

  1932. and real

1933. and deep to our hearts

1934. that you will help us

1935. to be in our right mind

  1936. and in community

  1937. with others

  1938. and in community

  1939. with you

  1940. so Father

  1941. please do this wonderful

  1942. work of grace

  1943. in our lives

  1944. and we ask this

1945. in the name of Jesus

  1946. your son

  1947. and our savior

  1948. amen
