  1. The scripture reading today comes from the book of Ecclesiastes chapter 9 and 10.

    Ecclesiastes 9 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on your own Bible, in the bulletin, or on the screen.

  3. Starting in chapter 9, verse 1, we read,

  4. But all this I laid to heart, examining it all,

  5. how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God.

  6. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know.

  7. Both are before him.

  8. It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked,

  9. to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean,

  10. to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.

  11. As the good one is, so is the sinner.

  12. And he who swears is as he who shunts an oath.

  13. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun,

  14. that the same event happens to all.

  15. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil,

  16. and madness is in their hearts while they live.

  17. And after that, they go to the dead.

  18. But he who is joined with all the living has hope,

  19. for a living dot is better than a dead lion.

  20. For the living know that they will die,

  21. but the dead know nothing.

  22. And they have no more reward,

  23. for the memory of them is forgotten.

  24. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished,

  25. and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun.

  26. Go, eat your bread with joy,

  27. and drink your wine with a merry heart,

  28. for God has already approved what you do.

  29. Let your garments be always white.

  30. Let not oil be lacking on your head.

  31. Enjoy life with the wife whom you love,

  32. all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun,

  33. because that is your portion in life,

  34. and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.

  35. Whatever your hand finds to do,

  36. do it with your might,

  37. for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom

  38. in Sheol to which you are going.

  39. Again, I saw that under the sun,

  40. the race is not to the swift,

  41. nor the battle to the strong,

  42. nor bread to the wise,

  43. nor riches to the intelligent,

  44. nor favor to those with knowledge,

  45. but time and chance happen to them all.

  46. For man does not know his time.

  47. Like fish that are taken in an evil net,

  48. and like birds that are caught in a snare,

  49. so the children of man are snared at an evil time

  50. when it suddenly falls upon them.

  51. I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun,

  52. and it seemed great to me.

  53. There was a little city with few men in it,

  54. and a great king came against it and besieged it,

  55. building great siege works against it.

  56. But there was found in it a poor wise man,

  57. and he, by his wisdom, delivered the city.

  58. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

  59. But I say that wisdom is better than might,

  60. though the poor man's wisdom is despised

  61. and his words are not heard.

  62. The words of the wise heard in quiet

  63. are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools.

  64. Wisdom is better than weapons of war,

  65. but one sinner destroys much good.

  66. Dead flies make the perfumant's ointment

  67. give off a stench,

  68. so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.

  69. A wise man's heart inclines him to the right,

  70. but a fool's heart to the left.

  71. Even when the fool walks on the road,

  72. he lacks sense,

  73. and he says to everyone that he is a fool.

  74. If the anger of the ruler rises against you,

  75. do not leave your place,

  76. for calmness will lay great offenses to rest.

  77. There is an evil that I have seen under the sun,

  78. as it were an error proceeding from the ruler.

  79. Folly is had in many high places,

  80. and the rich sit in a low place.

  81. I have seen slaves on horses,

  82. and princes walking on the ground like slaves.

  83. He who digs a pit will fall into it,

  84. and a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall.

  85. He who quarries stones is hurt by them,

  86. and he who splits logs is endangered by them.

  87. If the iron is blunt,

  88. and one does not sharpen the edge,

  89. he must use more strength.

  90. But wisdom helps one to succeed.

  91. If the serpent bites before it is charmed,

  92. there is no advantage to the charmer.

  93. The words of a wise man's mouth win him favor,

  94. but the lips of a fool consume him.

  95. This is the word of God.

  96. Great. Thank you, Anastasia.

  97. Thank you for reading well.

  98. And once again, we come to this interesting,

  99. but tricky passage in Ecclesiastes.

  100. And I think if you're anything like me,

  101. the first time you read that,

  102. you think,

  103. okay.

  104. On Monday morning,

  105. when I sat down with my Bible,

  106. and started to think about this morning,

  107. I read that for the first time,

  108. and thought,

  109. okay, this is going to be interesting.

  110. What is the author,

  111. what is Kohelet, the teacher,

  112. trying to say to us?

  113. Well, the author is coming back

  114. to one of the ideas that we looked at last week.

  115. He is, in the second half of the reading,

  116. he is considering wisdom once again.

  117. Remember last week,

  118. we spoke about wisdom,

  119. and Kohelet, the teacher,

  120. he said he sought for wisdom everywhere,

  121. and he couldn't find it.

  122. Well, he comes back to that idea this morning,

  123. and I want us just to think about this,

  124. because I didn't feel like last week,

  125. I actually explained wisdom very well,

  126. and so let's just take a minute or two,

  127. to think about that.

  128. What is wisdom?

  129. I tried to say last week,

  130. in the Bible,

  131. wisdom is the skill of living life well.

  132. It is, you could say,

  133. knowing how to make life work.

  134. It's the skill of knowing how to flourish in your life.

  135. Now, when we think of wisdom,

  136. it doesn't sound like a very sexy or exciting word.

  137. I don't think too many of us lie awake at night thinking,

  138. how can I become more wise?

  139. Right?

  140. We're scrolling Google about,

  141. I don't think it's one of Google's top ten searches.

  142. How do I become more of a wise person?

  143. But if you think about it,

  144. what the Bible promises that wisdom gives us,

  145. how to make life work,

  146. the flourishing life,

  147. is actually something that all of us want.

  148. How many of us don't want to make life work?

  149. How many of us don't want to flourish?

  150. How many of us, if you're young,

  151. don't want to think about how not to waste your life?

  152. It's the reason so many young people come to me often and say,

  153. I'm looking for a mentor in life.

  154. Can you help me find a mentor?

  155. Someone who can guide me and coach me.

  156. It's the reason we listen to TED Talks and podcasts

  157. and read brilliant books

  158. because there's a desire inside of us to make life work,

  159. to not waste our lives,

  160. to find out the way to a flourishing life.

  161. And so we want to know how to make our finances work

  162. and make relationships work

  163. and make our careers work,

  164. how to make work-life balance work.

  165. And so wisdom is the skill

  166. of knowing how to make life work

  167. when you don't have the answers in front of you.

  168. Wisdom is knowing,

  169. is the skill of being able to find out

  170. what is the right thing to do

  171. when you don't know what to do.

  172. And so that's why Proverbs says,

  173. of all the skills you can get in life,

  174. make sure you acquire the skill

  175. of knowing how to make life work,

  176. the skill of living.

  177. Because it is one skill that can set you apart

  178. from your colleagues and your friends and your families.

  179. The skill of knowing how to make life work.

  180. And the ancient biblical word for this skill

  181. is the skill of wisdom.

  182. Okay? Wisdom.

  183. Wisdom.

  184. Now, as I said last week in chapters 8,

  185. the teacher, Kohelet,

  186. is trying to search out,

  187. seek for this wisdom.

  188. And he looks everywhere,

  189. but he can't find it.

  190. In chapter 10 and 9,

  191. he seems to have found it.

  192. He seems to have stumbled upon it

  193. because he talks about it quite a bit.

  194. But the teacher is in two minds about it.

  195. Because on one hand,

  196. when Anastasia reads to us,

  197. on one hand you think,

  198. okay, he's really saying wisdom is a good thing.

  199. He espouses some of the benefits of it.

  200. But on the other hand,

  201. he seems a little bit condescending towards it.

  202. He seems like he says,

  203. oh, you know,

  204. get wisdom, it's good for you,

  205. but actually it's not going to help that much

  206. at the end of the day.

  207. And so he seems to be in two minds about it.

  208. Well, let's see what he says.

  209. Look at chapter 9, verse 13 to 15.

  210. Now, once again,

  211. you're going to need your bulletin

  212. or a Bible in front of you.

  213. I don't have the scriptures on the screen,

  214. so you're going to need to follow in front of you.

  215. Look at what he says.

  216. He says,

  217. wisdom is able to be a great benefit to society.

  218. It's actually able to save many lives.

  219. He says, verse 13,

  220. I have seen an example of wisdom under the sun.

  221. It seemed great to me.

  222. There was this little city with few men in it,

  223. and a great king came against it and besieged it,

  224. building great siege works around the city.

  225. But there was found in it a poor man,

  226. a wise man,

  227. and he, by his wisdom,

  228. delivered the city.

  229. So here's this poor man.

  230. He's not very wealthy.

  231. He's not very well-esteemed.

  232. He's kind of despised and rejected.

  233. But by his wisdom,

  234. he's able to save the city

  235. and actually save a great many people's lives.

  236. Wisdom is a great benefit to society.

  237. And if you think about that,

  238. that's true in our modern life today.

  239. Think of the number of people who,

  240. by their wisdom,

  241. are able to save a great many people's lives.

  242. Think of doctors and nurses

  243. and people who respond in emergency situations.

  244. They are presented with the situation before them.

  245. They haven't been trained for that situation.

  246. But by their wisdom,

  247. they are able to find a solution

  248. where no solution seems obvious.

  249. And they save a great many people's lives.

  250. We can be thankful for the doctors

  251. and the nurses during COVID,

  252. who many of them put their lives on the line,

  253. many of them working insane hours

  254. through the night,

  255. finding solutions where there were no obvious solutions,

  256. and saved a great many people's lives.

  257. The teacher also says this.

  258. He says,

  259. Through wisdom,

  260. we're able to find success

  261. where success seems to evade us.

  262. Look at 10 verse 10.

  263. He says,

  264. If the axe is blunt

  265. and one does not sharpen the edge,

  266. he must use more strength.

  267. But wisdom helps one to succeed.

  268. He's saying,

  269. Listen,

  270. you've got a situation before you

  271. and you get stuck.

  272. You come up against a brick wall.

  273. You can't find a way through.

  274. But actually,

  275. wisdom enables you

  276. to overcome the obstacles in life.

  277. And again,

  278. think of the great benefit this is to us.

  279. Think of many of the things

  280. that we take for granted in our lives,

  281. but have not,

  282. we shouldn't take for granted.

  283. Think of things like running water,

  284. transport,

  285. engineering feats

  286. that allow us to live in massive buildings,

  287. airplanes that fly in the sky.

  288. For centuries,

  289. even millennia,

  290. these things were things

  291. that most of society

  292. didn't have in front of them.

  293. But someone was able,

  294. through wisdom,

  295. to find a solution

  296. and to break through the barriers.

  297. So we can be very grateful

  298. you don't need to walk a kilometer

  299. with a bucket in your hand

  300. down to the river

  301. to find fresh running water.

  302. No, you just turn on a tap.

  303. Wisdom is able to bring great benefit

  304. to our lives.

  305. But look at what else he says.

  306. He says,

  307. the life of wisdom

  308. is a source of joy

  309. and blessing

  310. to those who possess it,

  311. but also to those around them.

  312. Look at in 10 verse 12,

  313. the final words

  314. that Anastasia read to us.

  315. He says,

  316. the words of a wise man's mouth

  317. bring favor

  318. or bring grace.

  319. I don't know if you've ever spent

  320. an evening

  321. with a really wise person,

  322. someone you really esteem

  323. and look up to.

  324. And they just being themselves,

  325. but you feel so enriched

  326. by them.

  327. The Hebrew here

  328. could mean that

  329. if you're a wise person,

  330. your words bring grace

  331. and favor to your life

  332. because you're able

  333. to navigate the challenges

  334. of life

  335. or you bring grace

  336. and blessing

  337. to those around you.

  338. If you ever spend time

  339. with someone

  340. who's really wise,

  341. you feel like

  342. just their words

  343. deposit grace

  344. into your life.

  345. You come away

  346. from spending time

  347. with that person

  348. just feeling enriched

  349. in life.

  350. You feel so much better.

  351. And actually,

  352. how much better

  353. when such a person

  354. is the leader

  355. of a city

  356. because Anastasia

  357. didn't read it to us,

  358. but in verse 10,

  359. he says,

  360. woe to you,

  361. O land,

  362. when your king

  363. is a young

  364. and immature

  365. and foolish leader.

  366. You've got a leader

  367. of a city,

  368. they're immature,

  369. they're young,

  370. they're foolish,

  371. they're living for themselves,

  372. they're self-centered,

  373. they're not very wise.

  374. And what happens?

  375. The whole city

  376. languishes

  377. under their rulership.

  378. But O blessed are you,

  379. O land,

  380. when your rulers

  381. are wise,

  382. they bring grace

  383. and favor

  384. and blessing

  385. into your life.

  386. And so,

  387. again and again,

  388. the Bible says

  389. wisdom is a great blessing,

  390. a great benefit.

  391. It's a friend to us.

  392. That's why Proverbs

  393. says,

  394. seek out wisdom,

  395. search for it,

  396. pay for it.

  397. Even if it costs you,

  398. whatever you do,

  399. get wisdom.

  400. It's a great friend.

  401. to our lives.

  402. Friends,

  403. our lives

  404. and the lives

  405. of those around us

  406. and our city

  407. would be so much better,

  408. so much more blessed

  409. if we were able

  410. to fill our hearts

  411. and our lives

  412. with wisdom.

  413. But the teacher here

  414. also notices

  415. something else

  416. and he says,

  417. even the most wise,

  418. even the most brilliant

  419. of people,

  420. even those that we

  421. really look up to

  422. in honor and esteem,

  423. even they are not

  424. immune from the

  425. shortcomings

  426. of wisdom.

  427. He says,

  428. knowing how to

  429. make life work,

  430. you know how to

  431. flourish in life,

  432. it can serve you,

  433. it can be a friend,

  434. but it's not a silver bullet.

  435. It doesn't solve

  436. all of life's problems

  437. because even the

  438. most brilliant,

  439. the most wise of us

  440. are still going to

  441. encounter the

  442. shortcomings of wisdom.

  443. Look at what he says

  444. in 9 verse 15.

  445. Remember he talks

  446. about that poor man,

  447. that wise man,

  448. who saved his village

  449. by his wisdom.

  450. He says there was

  451. found in it a wise man,

  452. he by his wisdom

  453. delivered the city,

  454. but the next line,

  455. yet no one

  456. remembered him.

  457. No one remembered

  458. his wisdom.

  459. In other words,

  460. here is a city

  461. that is saved

  462. by this man,

  463. but 30 years later

  464. he dies,

  465. and another king

  466. comes and besieges

  467. the city,

  468. and no one

  469. remembers his wisdom,

  470. and the city,

  471. the village

  472. is just wiped out,

  473. and in the grand

  474. scheme of things,

  475. who remembers,

  476. who cares?

  477. Nobody.

  478. He's forgotten.

  479. And isn't that true

  480. of our lives as well?

  481. Think of this city

  482. in which we live

  483. a hundred years ago.

  484. Many brilliant,

  485. wise,

  486. outstanding people,

  487. very selfless people,

  488. people who

  489. laid down their lives

  490. for the good

  491. of their families

  492. or those around them.

  493. A hundred years later,

  494. does anybody

  495. remember them?

  496. What difference

  497. did their lives

  498. really make?

  499. Think of even

  500. the names

  501. that our streets

  502. are named after,

  503. right?

  504. That's one of the

  505. great things

  506. about Hong Kong.

  507. All these street names

  508. named after

  509. brilliant people.

  510. Do any of us

  511. know what they

  512. actually did?

  513. More than a handful

  514. of them?

  515. You can have

  516. the streets

  517. named after you,

  518. you can have

  519. a whole city

  520. named after you,

  521. but in 200,

  522. 300 years' time,

  523. who cares really?

  524. Wisdom is good,

  525. but it's short-lived.

  526. Look at what else

  527. he says.

  528. He says,

  529. Wisdom is great,

  530. but it so quickly

  531. gets spoiled

  532. or cancelled.

  533. Look at 10,

  534. verse 1.

  535. He says,

  536. Dead flies

  537. make the perfumer's

  538. ointment

  539. give off a stench,

  540. so a little folly

  541. outweighs wisdom

  542. and honor.

  543. Isn't that such

  544. a great picture,

  545. right?

  546. You've got a cake

  547. to your birthday.

  548. Someone bakes you

  549. a cake.

  550. You're so excited

  551. and you cut it open

  552. and there's a worm

  553. inside.

  554. And that little thing

  555. spoils the whole cake,

  556. right?

  557. You're not going to say,

  558. Oh,

  559. I'll just remove

  560. that little piece,

  561. but the rest of it

  562. lets enjoy.

  563. What are you going to do?

  564. You're probably going

  565. to throw it all out.

  566. But isn't that true

  567. of life,

  568. right?

  569. You have somebody

  570. who's really brilliant,

  571. they're absolutely wise,

  572. they may be a great boss,

  573. a great leader,

  574. it may be your company

  575. or an industry,

  576. maybe a great pastor,

  577. they really invest

  578. in your life,

  579. and they make

  580. one stupid decision,

  581. one foolish act,

  582. one dumb mistake,

  583. and how are their lives

  584. remembered

  585. for the rest

  586. of their lives?

  587. They are forever known

  588. as the one person

  589. that brought down

  590. that company

  591. or destroyed

  592. that industry

  593. or ruined

  594. that church.

  595. Forty years

  596. of selfless service

  597. 40 years

  598. of brilliant

  599. wisdom

  600. and teaching,

  601. 40 years

  602. of great leadership

  603. is reduced

  604. to nothing

  605. in a moment.

  606. Wisdom is such

  607. a great gift,

  608. but it gets cancelled

  609. so quickly.

  610. Friends,

  611. you can spend

  612. the next 40 years

  613. of your life

  614. building your name,

  615. your reputation,

  616. and in an instant

  617. it can get cancelled.

  618. It can get spoiled.

  619. Look what else

  620. he says here.

  621. He says,

  622. as great as it is

  623. to be a wise person,

  624. wisdom can't deliver you

  625. from the unpredictableness

  626. of life.

  627. We all tend to think

  628. that if we live life well,

  629. if we have the smarts,

  630. if we're academically

  631. sharp and diligent

  632. and we work hard,

  633. we will make life work.

  634. We will succeed.

  635. And the teacher says,

  636. not necessarily.

  637. Even the smartest people

  638. in life,

  639. there's unpredictableness.

  640. Look what he says

  641. in 10,

  642. verse 8 and 9.

  643. He says,

  644. a wise man,

  645. he plans a building project,

  646. he digs a pit,

  647. oh, he falls into it

  648. and he dies.

  649. An architect,

  650. an engineer,

  651. he decides to break

  652. through a wall

  653. and he doesn't know

  654. on the other side

  655. death is waiting for him.

  656. Verse 9,

  657. he who quarries stones,

  658. he wants to build

  659. his retirement home

  660. and so he gets

  661. some stones

  662. and he's just

  663. chiseling them off,

  664. just doing the final touches

  665. to his dream home

  666. and he's left blind.

  667. Stone shoots up

  668. and takes out his eye.

  669. He who splits logs

  670. is endangered by them.

  671. Maybe you're the wisest person.

  672. You plan perfectly,

  673. you do your checks

  674. and balances,

  675. everything in order,

  676. but there's a whole lot

  677. of life that is unpredictable

  678. and beyond your control.

  679. Maybe you're a very

  680. careful driver.

  681. driver.

  682. You drive very carefully,

  683. you always stick

  684. to the speed limit,

  685. safety belt,

  686. double safety belt,

  687. you drive the safest car

  688. on the road,

  689. oh, but there's

  690. a foolish driver

  691. that's looking at his phone

  692. and he cuts across traffic,

  693. takes you out.

  694. When I was growing up,

  695. we had a very,

  696. very close family friend

  697. in South Africa

  698. and he used to,

  699. he drove motorbikes,

  700. he loved motorbikes,

  701. but he was an extremely

  702. careful driver.

  703. He always said,

  704. you drive a motorbike

  705. like you drive

  706. the biggest lorry

  707. on the road.

  708. If you can't drive

  709. a bus through that gap,

  710. you don't take the gap,

  711. very safe driver.

  712. One day he flies

  713. back into Johannesburg,

  714. he phones his wife

  715. at the airport

  716. and says,

  717. I've just landed,

  718. I'll be home

  719. in 45 minutes,

  720. see you there.

  721. He doesn't come home.

  722. He's driving home

  723. and a truck driver,

  724. a guy didn't have

  725. his license,

  726. wasn't concentrating,

  727. goes off the road,

  728. cuts across,

  729. hits him

  730. and in the instant

  731. he's dead.

  732. You can be

  733. the wisest person,

  734. but there's a whole

  735. lot of life

  736. that is unpredictable.

  737. You can't manage.

  738. And so look at

  739. what the teacher says.

  740. Finally,

  741. he says,

  742. the final thing

  743. about wisdom,

  744. he says,

  745. wisdom actually

  746. can't deliver you

  747. from the main problem,

  748. the one enemy,

  749. the one adversary

  750. that all of us

  751. ultimately must face

  752. and that is

  753. our mortality.

  754. The fact that

  755. one day

  756. all of us

  757. are going to die.

  758. Look at what he says

  759. in chapter 9

  760. verse 11 and 12.

  761. He says,

  762. again I saw

  763. under the sun

  764. the race is not

  765. to the swift

  766. nor the battle

  767. to the strong

  768. nor bread,

  769. he means economic

  770. like food

  771. to the wise,

  772. nor riches

  773. to the intelligent,

  774. nor favor

  775. to those with knowledge,

  776. but time and chance

  777. happen to all of us.

  778. For man does not

  779. know his time.

  780. Like fish,

  781. they are taken

  782. in an evil net.

  783. Like birds,

  784. they are caught up

  785. in an evil snare.

  786. So the children of man

  787. are snared

  788. at an evil time

  789. when it suddenly

  790. falls upon them.

  791. He says,

  792. ultimately you can be

  793. the smartest,

  794. most brilliant person

  795. in the world.

  796. You can be the most

  797. diligent,

  798. hard working,

  799. well organized,

  800. sharpest person.

  801. But ultimately

  802. there is an adversary

  803. that all of us

  804. face

  805. that none of us

  806. can outsmart.

  807. I heard a story

  808. recently of a man

  809. in the UK,

  810. he goes to an

  811. elders meeting

  812. at church one night,

  813. at the end of

  814. the elders meeting

  815. he gets a phone call.

  816. Your wife has just

  817. passed away.

  818. So what happened?

  819. She was healthy.

  820. Adult sudden death

  821. syndrome.

  822. No medical explanation,

  823. she is at home,

  824. she suddenly just dies.

  825. And the author

  826. wants us to see

  827. that the mortality

  828. rate for humanity

  829. is still 100%.

  830. That all of us

  831. ultimately

  832. are going to die.

  833. And that's what

  834. the teacher

  835. Kehelith is saying.

  836. Even the brightest,

  837. even the smartest,

  838. even the shrewdest

  839. escape artist

  840. cannot escape

  841. our one final enemy,

  842. death.

  843. Now I know that

  844. in Asia

  845. we don't like to

  846. talk about death

  847. very much, right?

  848. It's the thing

  849. we try to avoid

  850. talking about.

  851. We say when

  852. someone dies,

  853. we say they've

  854. passed on,

  855. they've passed away.

  856. We have euphemisms

  857. to soften it,

  858. to not talk about it.

  859. Death is the one thing

  860. we all try to avoid

  861. thinking about

  862. and talking about.

  863. Claire and I

  864. have this friend

  865. who's from Hong Kong,

  866. he grew up

  867. overseas abroad,

  868. and when he was

  869. younger,

  870. his father

  871. passed away

  872. one day,

  873. but the extended

  874. family was still

  875. here in Hong Kong

  876. and for two years

  877. they didn't tell

  878. the family

  879. that the father

  880. had passed away.

  881. And so the

  882. grandparents would

  883. phone

  884. and my friend

  885. would lower his

  886. voice and answer

  887. the phone and say,

  888. yes, yes, no,

  889. we're all doing

  890. well here,

  891. kids just send

  892. their love.

  893. And for two years

  894. he would pretend

  895. to be his dad

  896. because they didn't

  897. want to let the

  898. family know that

  899. their son had

  900. passed away.

  901. We all try to

  902. avoid thinking

  903. about it and

  904. talking about it.

  905. But actually,

  906. Kohelet,

  907. the teacher,

  908. says that

  909. thinking about

  910. our mortality,

  911. thinking about

  912. the fact that

  913. all of us

  914. one day are

  915. going to die,

  916. is actually a

  917. source of wisdom.

  918. It's one of the

  919. ways that we can

  920. steward our lives

  921. well.

  922. Do you remember

  923. the prayer that

  924. Moses prays in

  925. Psalm 90?

  926. He says,

  927. teach us to

  928. number our days,

  929. O Lord,

  930. that we may get

  931. a heart of

  932. wisdom.

  933. I know that

  934. we all think

  935. we're going to

  936. live forever,

  937. especially if you're

  938. 25 or younger,

  939. you feel like,

  940. I'm immortal,

  941. right?

  942. I'll never face

  943. those things.

  944. Old age is a

  945. long way off.

  946. Well,

  947. take it from me,

  948. your hair starts

  949. to recede sooner

  950. than you think.

  951. Right?

  952. Age old starts,

  953. old age starts

  954. to set in.

  955. But the teacher,

  956. Kohelet,

  957. says that thinking

  958. about death

  959. actually is one

  960. way that we get

  961. wisdom.

  962. Realizing that we

  963. are not immortal

  964. helps us to

  965. steward our lives

  966. well.

  967. Look what he

  968. says here in

  969. chapter 9,

  970. verse 7 to 10.

  971. He says,

  972. he's talking about

  973. death and he

  974. says,

  975. so go and eat

  976. your bread with

  977. joy.

  978. Drink your wine

  979. with a merry heart.

  980. He's saying,

  981. listen,

  982. you're not going to

  983. live life forever,

  984. so actually enjoy

  985. your life.

  986. And verse 9,

  987. enjoy life with

  988. the wife whom

  989. you love.

  990. Enjoy the days

  991. of your vain life

  992. that God has

  993. given you under

  994. the sun.

  995. Whatever your

  996. hand finds to

  997. do,

  998. do it with all

  999. your might.

  1000. Now,

  1001. he's not saying

  1002. just go party

  1003. it up,

  1004. take drugs,

  1005. drink yourself

  1006. into a stupor

  1007. because,

  1008. hey,

  1009. you've just got

  1010. one life to

  1011. live.

  1012. YOLO,

  1013. you only live

  1014. once,

  1015. so just,

  1016. you know,

  1017. make it happen,

  1018. right?

  1019. Because what does

  1020. verse 8 say?

  1021. Read it with me.

  1022. He says,

  1023. verse 8,

  1024. let your garments

  1025. always be white,

  1026. let not oil be

  1027. lacking on your

  1028. head.

  1029. So he's saying,

  1030. live your life

  1031. with purity,

  1032. live your life

  1033. before the face

  1034. of God Almighty,

  1035. but before God,

  1036. live,

  1037. enjoy your life

  1038. to the one

  1039. life that he's

  1040. given you.

  1041. But ultimately,

  1042. what Koheleth

  1043. really wants us

  1044. to get about

  1045. death is this,

  1046. that death

  1047. is the great

  1048. equalizer

  1049. of all

  1050. humanity.

  1051. Death is

  1052. coming to

  1053. all of us.

  1054. He says,

  1055. it doesn't matter

  1056. who you are,

  1057. what your

  1058. background is,

  1059. what your

  1060. culture is,

  1061. how brilliant

  1062. or successful

  1063. you've been.

  1064. It doesn't matter

  1065. how healthy

  1066. you eat,

  1067. how much

  1068. exercise you do.

  1069. Exercise is good.

  1070. It'll mean that

  1071. when you are alive,

  1072. at least your life

  1073. will be maybe

  1074. better.

  1075. Exercise is good.

  1076. But even if you're

  1077. the best exercise

  1078. in the world,

  1079. even if you only

  1080. eat healthy food,

  1081. you are still

  1082. going to die.

  1083. He says,

  1084. it doesn't matter

  1085. whether you're

  1086. a billionaire

  1087. or whether

  1088. you sweep

  1089. the streets

  1090. for a living.

  1091. It doesn't matter

  1092. whether your name

  1093. is on lights

  1094. and newspapers,

  1095. your name is on

  1096. buildings all

  1097. around Hong Kong,

  1098. or nobody

  1099. knows your name.

  1100. all of us

  1101. one day

  1102. are going to

  1103. face death.

  1104. Look at how he

  1105. says it in

  1106. chapter 9,

  1107. verse 2 and 3.

  1108. He says,

  1109. it is the same

  1110. for all of us

  1111. since the same

  1112. event happens

  1113. to the righteous

  1114. and to the wicked,

  1115. to the good

  1116. and to the evil,

  1117. to the clean

  1118. and to the unclean,

  1119. to him who

  1120. sacrifices

  1121. and to him

  1122. who does not.

  1123. As the good

  1124. one is,

  1125. so is the sinner,

  1126. the one who swears,

  1127. and that means

  1128. swears an oath

  1129. to God,

  1130. and the one

  1131. who shuns his oath.

  1132. This is an evil,

  1133. there is an evil

  1134. that is in all

  1135. that is done

  1136. under the sun.

  1137. The same event

  1138. happens to all.

  1139. The hearts of the

  1140. children of man

  1141. are full of evil

  1142. and madness

  1143. is in their hearts

  1144. while they live.

  1145. And after that,

  1146. they all go

  1147. to the dead.

  1148. The teacher

  1149. is telling us

  1150. that death

  1151. is the great

  1152. equalizer

  1153. of all humanity.

  1154. It doesn't matter

  1155. who you are

1156. or where you come from,

  1157. the ground

  1158. at death's door

  1159. is equal.

  1160. You know,

  1161. in Hong Kong

  1162. we love to compare,

  1163. right?

  1164. Where do you live?

  1165. What street

  1166. do you live on?

  1167. What school

  1168. did you go to?

  1169. What company

  1170. do you work for?

  1171. How quickly

  1172. have you progressed

  1173. through your career?

  1174. We love to compare.

  1175. And the teacher

  1176. here is saying

  1177. all those comparisons

  1178. ultimately

  1179. are meaningless

  1180. because

  1181. there is

  1182. an equalizer

  1183. that will come

  1184. to all of us.

  1185. The race

1186. is not to the swift.

  1187. The battle

1188. is not to the strong.

  1189. The rich

1190. is not to the intelligent.

  1191. Time and chance

  1192. happen to them all.

  1193. This is

  1194. life

  1195. under the sun.

  1196. This is what

  1197. the teacher

  1198. observes

  1199. and sees

  1200. around him.

  1201. This is our lot

  1202. in life.

  1203. And so he says

  1204. seek wisdom.

  1205. Wisdom can benefit you.

  1206. Wisdom is good.

1207. It can be your friend.

  1208. But it's not

  1209. the silver bullet.

  1210. It cannot

  1211. ultimately

  1212. save you.

  1213. Because one day

  1214. all of us

  1215. will face

  1216. the call

  1217. when death

  1218. comes and

  1219. knocks on our door.

  1220. Death is the one

  1221. great equalizer.

  1222. Except

  1223. that it's not.

  1224. Friends,

  1225. if you've been

  1226. coming to Watermark

  1227. for some time

  1228. you'll know

  1229. that there is

  1230. another

  1231. great equalizer

  1232. that the Bible

  1233. speaks about.

  1234. The great equalizer

  1235. of all the world

1236. is not just the fact

  1237. that all of us

  1238. are one day

  1239. going to die.

  1240. In fact,

  1241. the greatest equalizer

  1242. that the Bible

  1243. speaks about

  1244. happened

  1245. to one man

  1246. and his death

  1247. upon the cross.

  1248. Because

  1249. Jesus Christ

  1250. went to the cross

  1251. and died

  1252. to once again

  1253. reset

  1254. the balances

  1255. and to equalize

  1256. all of humanity.

  1257. Listen to how

  1258. the Apostle Paul

  1259. writes it

  1260. in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  1261. He says,

  1262. God's gift

  1263. of grace

  1264. is given

  1265. to all

  1266. who believe.

  1267. For there is

  1268. no distinction

  1269. in life.

  1270. For all people

  1271. have sinned

  1272. and fall short

  1273. of the glory

  1274. of God.

  1275. And all

  1276. who are in Christ

  1277. are justified

  1278. by his grace

  1279. as a gift

  1280. through the redemption

1281. that is in Jesus Christ

  1282. whom God put forward

  1283. as an atoning sacrifice

  1284. by his blood.

  1285. Friends,

  1286. the scripture says

  1287. that

  1288. all of humanity

  1289. is

  1290. infected

  1291. and affected

  1292. by the reality

  1293. of sin.

  1294. and all

  1295. of humanity

  1296. therefore

  1297. is under

  1298. sin's curse

  1299. called death.

  1300. He says

  1301. there is no distinction.

  1302. All people,

  1303. it doesn't matter

  1304. your culture,

  1305. your race,

  1306. your background,

  1307. your ethnicity,

  1308. it doesn't matter

  1309. whether you've got

  1310. a trillion dollars

  1311. in the bank account

  1312. or you've got nothing.

  1313. All humanity,

  1314. the great equalizer

1315. is that all of us

  1316. have sinned

  1317. and fall short

  1318. of God's glory.

  1319. The rich,

  1320. the poor,

  1321. the righteous,

  1322. the unrighteous,

  1323. the pastor,

  1324. the drug addict,

  1325. all of us

1326. are in the same boat.

1327. That's what our passage says.

  1328. Look at chapter 9 verse 5.

  1329. He says,

  1330. What is this?

1331. The hearts of the children of man

  1332. are set on evil,

  1333. set on madness.

  1334. But friends,

1335. the good news of the gospel

  1336. is that

  1337. though all have sinned

  1338. and though all

  1339. have fallen short

  1340. of God's glory,

  1341. all are able

  1342. to be forgiven

  1343. healed,

  1344. healed,

  1345. justified,

  1346. restored,

  1347. ransomed,

  1348. healed,

  1349. because Jesus Christ

  1350. went to the cross

  1351. for the sins

  1352. of all those

1353. who would turn to Him

  1354. and trust Him.

  1355. Friends,

1356. Jesus didn't just go to the cross

  1357. for the righteous,

  1358. for the wealthy,

  1359. for the privileged.

1360. Jesus didn't just go to the cross

  1361. for the poor,

  1362. for the marginalized,

  1363. for the downhearted.

  1364. Jesus Christ

  1365. went to the cross

  1366. for all humanity

1367. who would come to Him

  1368. and trust in Him

  1369. and look to Him.

  1370. Elsewhere,

  1371. the apostle Paul writes,

1372. and listen to what he says.

  1373. He says,

  1374. In Christ Jesus,

  1375. you are all

  1376. sons and daughters

  1377. of God

  1378. through faith.

  1379. for in Christ

  1380. there is neither Jew

  1381. nor Greek.

  1382. Now,

  1383. to us,

  1384. that doesn't sound

  1385. really radical.

1386. But in the first century,

1387. that is a radical idea.

  1388. That's like

  1389. walking into

  1390. Mississippi

  1391. in 1963

  1392. and saying,

  1393. there is no distinction

  1394. between black and white,

  1395. right?

1396. That is a radical idea.

  1397. There is no difference

  1398. between Jew and Greek.

  1399. Paul says,

  1400. there is no difference

  1401. between male

  1402. and female.

  1403. Again,

  1404. a radical idea

  1405. in the first century.

  1406. There is no difference

  1407. between slave

  1408. and free

  1409. for Christ Jesus

  1410. went to the cross

  1411. for all humanity.

  1412. Friends,

  1413. the cross of Christ

  1414. is the great equalizer.

  1415. The ground

  1416. is level

1417. at the foot of the cross.

  1418. Come with your pride

  1419. and your accolades

  1420. and your credentials

1421. and you will be humbled.

  1422. But come empty-handed

1423. with nothing in your hands,

  1424. feeling guilty,

  1425. worn down,

  1426. broken,

1427. and you will be honored

  1428. with the greatest honor,

  1429. the name of Christ.

  1430. The name that Christ

  1431. will give you.

  1432. You will be called

  1433. the son or daughter

1434. of the Most High King.

  1435. The ground

  1436. is level

  1437. at the foot

  1438. of the cross.

  1439. But the Bible says

  1440. that because Jesus

  1441. really is God,

  1442. because He died

  1443. and He rose again,

  1444. Jesus solves

  1445. the two great problems

  1446. that the teacher

  1447. is grappling with

  1448. in Ecclesiastes 9 and 10.

  1449. Look at how Jesus

  1450. solves the problem

  1451. of wisdom.

  1452. Jesus Christ

  1453. comes and gives you

  1454. a wisdom

1455. that you can never achieve

  1456. by simply observing

  1457. life under the sun

  1458. on your own.

1459. In the book of James

  1460. in the New Testament,

  1461. the apostle James,

  1462. who is actually

  1463. the half-brother of Jesus,

  1464. writes and he says,

  1465. there's actually

  1466. two different kinds

1467. of wisdom in this world.

  1468. There's a wisdom

  1469. that's observed

  1470. that you gain

  1471. just by observing

  1472. life under the sun.

  1473. You listen to podcasts,

1474. you listen to TED Talks,

  1475. you read great books.

  1476. There's a wisdom

  1477. that you can observe

  1478. that you can gain

  1479. by observing

  1480. life under the sun.

1481. And it may help you

  1482. get ahead in life,

  1483. it may help you

  1484. to progress

  1485. in your career,

  1486. but very often

  1487. there's a trail

  1488. of pain

  1489. and destruction

  1490. and broken relationships

  1491. behind that kind

  1492. of wisdom.

  1493. And the apostle James

  1494. says there's another

  1495. kind of wisdom

  1496. that comes from

  1497. beyond the sun.

  1498. And it's an upside-down

  1499. wisdom.

  1500. It's a wisdom

  1501. that may not get

  1502. your name on lights,

1503. it may not make you

  1504. the most famous person

  1505. in the world,

  1506. but it's a wisdom

  1507. that will answer

  1508. the deep questions

  1509. of life.

  1510. It's a wisdom

  1511. that will help you

  1512. to find out

1513. what life is all about.

  1514. He says there's a

  1515. different kind of wisdom,

  1516. it's an upside-down

  1517. wisdom.

  1518. It seems like foolishness

  1519. to those who simply

1520. observe life under the sun.

1521. It's the kind of wisdom

  1522. that will help you

1523. not to waste your life.

  1524. But it's the kind

  1525. of wisdom that comes

  1526. not by trying

  1527. to find wisdom,

1528. but by setting your heart

  1529. on the one

  1530. who truly is wisdom.

1531. In the book of Proverbs,

  1532. the writer says this,

  1533. he says,

1534. the fear of the Lord

  1535. is the beginning

  1536. of wisdom.

  1537. And what that means

  1538. is this,

  1539. you don't find wisdom

1540. by trying to be wise,

  1541. you find wisdom

  1542. by setting your heart

  1543. on Jesus

  1544. who is wise himself.

  1545. Do you see that?

  1546. That's a radically

  1547. important idea.

  1548. Think about that,

  1549. the more you try

  1550. to be impressive

  1551. or smart

  1552. or brilliant,

1553. how do you come across?

  1554. You actually come across

  1555. foolish, right?

1556. Have you ever come across

  1557. somebody who

  1558. in a social setting,

  1559. they're always trying

  1560. to look smart,

  1561. they're always trying

  1562. to be impressive,

  1563. they're always trying

1564. to look as the wise

  1565. person in the room

1566. and what do you think

  1567. about that person?

  1568. They actually come across

  1569. as foolish.

1570. But who is the person

  1571. that's truly wise

  1572. and truly impressive

  1573. and truly brilliant?

  1574. It's actually the person

  1575. that forgets about themselves

  1576. and isn't trying

  1577. to be impressive,

  1578. but actually sets themselves

  1579. trying to serve

  1580. and love others.

  1581. The one characteristic

  1582. of all wise people

  1583. is that they're actually

  1584. not enamored

  1585. with themselves at all.

  1586. They've forgotten

  1587. about themselves.

  1588. The writer of Proverbs

  1589. says this,

1590. if you set your heart

1591. on trying to be wise,

1592. if you set your heart

1593. on trying to get ahead

  1594. in life

1595. and trying to make life work

  1596. and trying to not

  1597. waste your life,

  1598. you'll waste your life.

1599. But if you set your heart

  1600. on centering your life

  1601. on Jesus

  1602. and the gospel,

  1603. you will find

  1604. that actually

  1605. you will be wise.

  1606. in the New Testament,

  1607. the book of Colossians,

  1608. Paul writes this

  1609. and he says,

  1610. in Jesus Christ

  1611. are hidden,

  1612. that's an important word,

  1613. are hidden

  1614. all the treasures

  1615. of wisdom

  1616. and knowledge.

  1617. Now Paul's not saying

  1618. if you're not a Christian

  1619. you can't be smart,

  1620. right?

  1621. Okay?

  1622. He's not saying

  1623. only Christians

  1624. are smart people.

  1625. There's some people

  1626. that are very smart

  1627. and they wouldn't

  1628. profess faith in Christ.

  1629. Some of you

  1630. are here this morning.

1631. But what he is saying

  1632. is this,

  1633. that the key

  1634. to unlocking

  1635. the secrets to life,

  1636. this key to unlocking

  1637. the vaults

  1638. of the treasures

  1639. of wisdom

  1640. are not found

  1641. by simply observing

  1642. life around you.

  1643. It's not found

  1644. by simply observing

  1645. life under the sun.

  1646. It's found

1647. in coming to the one,

  1648. the author

1649. and the designer of life.

  1650. It's found

1651. in coming to the one

  1652. who created life.

  1653. This key to unlocking

  1654. the treasures

  1655. of wisdom and knowledge

  1656. are actually found

1657. and coming to the one

  1658. who made you

  1659. and who created you

  1660. and knows the purpose

  1661. for your life.

  1662. Jesus Christ

  1663. being the author

  1664. of life

  1665. will show you

  1666. how life was meant

  1667. to be lived.

  1668. Not according to just

  1669. the natural wisdom

  1670. of this world

  1671. but according to

  1672. an altogether

  1673. different kind

  1674. of wisdom.

1675. A wisdom that is not

  1676. found in life

  1677. under the sun

  1678. but found beyond

  1679. the sun.

  1680. we tend to think

  1681. that it's the strong

  1682. and the powerful

  1683. and the beautiful

  1684. that are successful

  1685. in life.

  1686. And Jesus is

  1687. blessed are the poor

  1688. and the weak

  1689. and the meek

1690. and the poor in spirit

  1691. and the merciful.

  1692. We tend to think

  1693. that honor

  1694. and respect

  1695. and long life

  1696. are the signs

  1697. of a good life.

  1698. And Jesus is

  1699. serving others

  1700. and being humble

  1701. are actually the signs

  1702. of greatness.

  1703. We tend to think

  1704. that those who

  1705. accumulate great wealth

  1706. are the blessed ones.

  1707. And Jesus says

  1708. it's more blessed

  1709. to give away

  1710. than to receive.

  1711. We tend to think

  1712. that it's those

1713. who have a big following

  1714. and a great name

  1715. and are esteemed

1716. that are the great ones

  1717. in our generation.

  1718. And Jesus says

  1719. he whoever humbles

  1720. himself like a child

  1721. is the greatest

  1722. in the kingdom.

  1723. Friends,

  1724. Jesus says

  1725. that the wisdom

  1726. that you gain

  1727. by observing life

  1728. under the sun,

  1729. the wisdom

  1730. that our teacher finds

1731. by listening to TED talks

  1732. and podcasts,

  1733. it's not wrong,

  1734. it's not pointless,

  1735. it's not sinful,

  1736. but it's not enough.

1737. It does not help you.

  1738. It may help you

1739. to get ahead in life,

  1740. it may help you

  1741. to focus on life,

  1742. but ultimately

1743. you can still get ahead

1744. in life and be a fool

1745. because it won't help you

  1746. to discover

  1747. the true answers

  1748. to life's biggest questions.

  1749. And so Jesus

  1750. actually solves

  1751. the answers

  1752. that wisdom

  1753. poses.

  1754. But not only that,

  1755. Jesus also solves

  1756. the problem of death

  1757. because Jesus died

  1758. and rose again.

  1759. The teacher says

  1760. there's only one thing

  1761. in this world

  1762. that you can be

  1763. absolutely certain of.

1764. All of us are going to die

  1765. and then after that,

  1766. who knows?

  1767. You can't be certain

1768. of anything beyond the grave.

  1769. But Jesus Christ

  1770. died and rose again

  1771. so that those

  1772. who come to him,

  1773. those who trust him,

1774. those who put their faith

  1775. in him,

  1776. truly can be certain

1777. of life in this world

  1778. and of the world

  1779. to come.

1780. And how do you know that?

  1781. Because under

  1782. the hill of Calvary,

  1783. there is a tomb

  1784. and that tomb

  1785. is empty.

  1786. Friends,

  1787. there are many things

  1788. in this world

1789. that you cannot be certain of.

  1790. There are many

  1791. unpredictable things

  1792. in life.

1793. But there are some things

1794. you can be certain of.

1795. You can be absolutely certain

  1796. that Jesus Christ

  1797. loves you

  1798. because he went

1799. to the cross for you.

1800. He died on the cross for you.

1801. He shed his blood for you.

1802. He took the nail-scarred hands

1803. to go to the cross

  1804. for you.

  1805. You can be absolutely

1806. certain of his love for you.

1807. You can be absolutely certain

1808. that if you are in Christ,

1809. he has not abandoned you.

1810. He has not forsaken you.

  1811. In Jesus Christ,

1812. he went to the cross

  1813. and he died there,

1814. but he didn't remain there.

1815. He rose from the grave.

  1816. He rose.

1817. He is ascended into heaven

  1818. and in heaven now,

  1819. he is interceding

1820. for those who are in Christ.

  1821. Friends,

  1822. Jesus Christ was abandoned

  1823. on the cross

1824. so that you will never

  1825. be abandoned.

  1826. Jesus Christ died

  1827. like a fool,

  1828. as Niels reminded us

  1829. a few weeks ago,

1830. so that fools like you and I

  1831. don't need to live

  1832. in our folly,

1833. but can discover the wisdom.

  1834. Friends,

  1835. Jesus Christ

  1836. went to the cross

  1837. so you can be

  1838. absolutely certain

  1839. that beyond death,

  1840. there is life

  1841. beyond the grave.

  1842. Jesus rose again

  1843. so that your hope

1844. is not only in this life.

  1845. The Bible describes Jesus

  1846. as a poor,

  1847. wise man

  1848. who came not just

  1849. to save his village,

1850. but to save all of humanity,

  1851. all those who would

  1852. trust in him,

  1853. all those who would

  1854. surrender to him.

  1855. Friends,

  1856. let's not be like

  1857. the village

  1858. in this parable

  1859. who rejected

  1860. and despised

  1861. the wisdom

  1862. of that poor,

  1863. wise man.

  1864. Jesus Christ

  1865. came to save

  1866. those who would

  1867. trust in him.

  1868. And so let's

1869. take heed of his wisdom.

  1870. Let's bank our lives

  1871. on him.

  1872. Let's surrender to him.

  1873. Let's center our lives

  1874. on him.

1875. And as we do that,

1876. we will find the wisdom

1877. to truly make life work.

1878. We will find the wisdom

  1879. how not to waste

  1880. our lives.

1881. We will find the wisdom

  1882. to,

1883. we will find the skill

  1884. of making life work

  1885. if we will center

  1886. our lives on Jesus.

  1887. promises.

  1888. But not only that,

  1889. we will defeat

  1890. death.

  1891. We will escape

  1892. the one great enemy

  1893. that none of us

1894. can escape on our own.

  1895. We will take hold

  1896. of life

  1897. and life everlasting.

  1898. Friends,

  1899. human wisdom

  1900. is good,

  1901. but it's limited.

  1902. Because life

  1903. is unpredictable,

  1904. and ultimately

  1905. it cannot save you

  1906. from the inevitability

  1907. of death.

  1908. And while death

  1909. is the great equalizer

  1910. of humanity,

  1911. there is another

  1912. equalizer,

  1913. the cross of Christ

1914. that invites all of us,

  1915. sinners though we are,

1916. to come and find hope

  1917. and fresh life

  1918. in him.

  1919. Friends,

  1920. Jesus died

  1921. and rose again.

  1922. Then we don't need

1923. to die in our foolishness,

1924. but that we can take

  1925. hold of life

  1926. and take hold

  1927. of his wisdom.

  1928. And so this week,

1929. as you go into your week,

1930. as you go to the office,

1931. as you go to holiday,

  1932. as you parent

  1933. your children,

  1934. as you look after

  1935. your aged parents,

  1936. as you pursue

  1937. a relationship

1938. or you try and reconcile

  1939. to a broken relationship,

1940. as you mourn the death

  1941. of a loved one

  1942. or a friend,

  1943. friends,

  1944. don't just seek wisdom,

  1945. don't just try

  1946. and make life work,

  1947. seek Jesus,

  1948. the author of life,

  1949. the author of wisdom,

  1950. the one who really

1951. did die and rose again

1952. so that we may find life.

  1953. Let's seek not wisdom

  1954. in our own lives,

  1955. but Jesus,

  1956. who is wisdom.

  1957. Let's pray together.

1958. Maybe actually before I pray,

1959. let me just give us

  1960. a few moments

1961. to respond on our own

  1962. in quiet.

  1963. In his word,

  1964. God calls us

1965. to not center our lives

1966. on trying to make life work,

1967. but to center our lives

  1968. on Jesus,

  1969. who will give us

  1970. the wisdom

  1971. to make life work.

  1972. How's Jesus asking us

1973. to respond to him today?

  1974. Amen.

1975. What will it look like

1976. for you to center your life

  1977. on Jesus this week?

1978. Maybe I can ask you,

1979. what is the one area

  1980. in your life

1981. that you try to live

  1982. by your own wisdom?

  1983. For many of us,

  1984. the temptations,

  1985. we'll say,

  1986. I'll surrender everything

  1987. to Jesus,

1988. but there's this one area

  1989. in my life

  1990. I don't want to let go

  1991. of control.

  1992. Friends,

  1993. that's the one area

  1994. where we'll probably

  1995. be most foolish.

  1996. What's the one area

  1997. of your life

1998. Jesus wants you to come

  1999. and center on him?

  2000. Amen.

  2001. Amen.

2002. Lord Jesus Christ, we bring our lives before you.

2003. In particular, we bring the areas of our life this morning that we find so hard to bring before you.

2004. Father, where we are tempted to live by our own wisdom,

2005. we confess that often we lead ourselves into foolishness.

2006. We have a trail of brokenness behind us.

2007. So Christ, we come before you this morning, and we ask you, come and have your way in our life.

2008. Come and be our King. Come and be our Lord.

2009. Come and be our Master.

2010. Come and be our Lord.

2011. Jesus, come and lead our lives, and give us the wisdom, God,

2012. to not waste our lives, but to make our lives flourish.

2013. By centering our lives in you, come and help us, we pray.

2014. God, where we lack faith, where we find it hard, won't you help us to trust you?

2015. Where we fear for God, won't you come and draw us near.

2016. Where we are anxious and worried, Jesus, come and bring your peace, and help us to trust you, we pray.

2017. In your great and gracious name, amen.

  2018. Bye.

  2019. Bye.
