  1. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would come,

  2. continue to come with might and power and deep conviction upon us.

  3. As we continue to think about your, read your word and think about it,

  4. puzzle over it, as we pray to you, as we sing your praises,

  5. as we gather around the Lord's table to remember Jesus' death.

  6. Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would continue to fall

  7. with might and power and deep conviction.

  8. And we ask, Father, we give you permission to have for you yourself

  9. to speak into our heart and rule in our heart through your word.

  10. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  11. Please be seated.

  12. So the text that we're going to be looking at today talks about sickness and death.

  13. And I have to say that some things have developed in my life over the last two days,

  14. two and a half days, that makes this actually far more personal.

  15. And so if I get emotional during the sermon, there's a reason for it.

  16. And when I tell you this, by the way, I am not equating a dog's life with a human's life.

  17. But some of you know that we have had this beautiful big German shepherd,

  18. 115, 120-pound gentle giant of a dog, for over seven years.

  19. Anyway, on Friday it had to be taken to the vet.

  20. And on Saturday we had to say that nothing else would be done

  21. and that we were bringing the dog home to die.

  22. I didn't think I'd get emotional.

  23. But I warned you. I wanted to just warn you.

  24. I mean, I'm not making a comment at all that the death of a dog is like the death of a human being.

  25. But, you know, dogs, especially a big gentle giant,

  26. 115, 120-pound gentle German shepherd,

  27. that does become part of the family for seven-plus years.

  28. So, I mean, obviously the vets don't know.

  29. It might be that he will live for a couple of weeks,

  30. but it's quite possible that by the time we gather again next week,

  31. we will have dealt with Rocky's remains.

  32. And the text today, obviously not about a dog,

  33. but it is about death and it is about sickness.

  34. And it is a text which has lots of challenges in it,

  35. things which puzzle people and distract us from the fundamental point,

  36. but it is a profound text to meditate upon,

  37. how Christians are to approach sickness and how they are to approach death.

  38. It's a very profound text,

  39. a text that is well worth meditating upon and contemplating upon for those of you who are in Jesus.

  40. And if you are here and you're not sure where you are with Jesus and Christianity,

  41. or if you're watching online,

  42. this gives you a bit of a window into how it is that Christians are invited

  43. to think about such very, very serious matters.

  44. The fact of the matter is, is that we all know that we will die,

  45. but really fundamentally we all know other people will die.

  46. We don't really believe that we will die.

  47. Although for some of you here or those online,

  48. you might have gotten a very bad prognosis this week,

  49. where a loved one has had a bad prognosis.

  50. So this is a deeply personal text,

  51. and let's turn to it and see what it is that was said.

  52. It's Mark chapter 5, beginning at verse 21.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  53. And as you've been warned, if I get a bit emotional during the sermon,

  54. it is because it's obvious, obvious,

  55. now that you know that thing about Rocky.

  56. So Mark chapter 5, verse 21,

    Mark 5:21

  57. and just before we read it, what's just happened?

  58. We preach through books of the Bible.

  59. Basically, Mark was written as one book to be read.

  60. And so we study it that way as a book.

  61. And what we just looked at last week was

  62. Jesus had gone to the other side of the Sea of Galilee,

  63. to the pagan side of the Sea of Galilee.

  64. And he'd come across, or he'd been met by a man

  65. who was demonized by a legion of demons.

  66. And Jesus delivers the man from the demons.

  67. And as a result of that,

  68. the people in the region want Jesus to leave.

  69. And so that's now where the story takes up.

  70. Jesus leaves.

  71. If people don't want Jesus, he leaves.

  72. And he leaves, and he goes back to the Jewish side of the lake.

  73. And that's where this story now takes up.

  74. And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side,

  75. a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.

  76. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue,

  77. Jairus by name.

  78. And seeing Jesus, he fell at Jesus' feet

  79. and implored him earnestly, saying,

  80. My little daughter is at the point of death.

  81. Come and lay your hands on her

  82. so that she may be made well and live.

  83. I have a bit of emotion still in my voice.

  84. Some of you who have very good imaginations

  85. can just very well imagine the tears that would have been in his voice

  86. as he asks for his precious daughter.

  87. And Jesus went with him.

  88. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.

  89. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for 12 years

  90. and who had suffered much under many doctors

  91. and had spent all that she had

  92. and was no better, but had grown worse.

  93. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  94. Why this story?

  95. One of the things, if you read the different,

  96. the four ancient biographies of Jesus,

  97. if you read them, all of them,

  98. one of the things you'll notice

  99. is that they have all of these little asides.

  100. Mark does it all the time.

  101. Oh yeah, Jesus spent a whole pile of time

  102. healing people and casting out demons,

  103. and then he did this.

  104. Or he spent the day doing this,

  105. healing people, casting out demons,

  106. and then he did this.

  107. And several of the writers

  108. mention right in the book

  109. that if they actually were to record everything that Jesus did,

  110. it would be too many books.

  111. Because he did lots of miracles.

  112. So you have to ask yourself a little bit,

  113. why this story?

  114. Like why did they tell this story

  115. rather than the thousands of other stories of healings

  116. that they could potentially have told?

  117. And I think one of the reasons is

  118. you have to remember

  119. every time you read the Bible

  120. is on one level,

  121. the world is very different than today.

  122. I mean, on the other level,

  123. it's very same.

  124. We still wrestle with the death of loved ones.

  125. And all of us will die

  126. unless Jesus comes first.

  127. Like that's all very deeply personal.

  128. And people back then were very smart.

  129. But one of the things

  130. which was different between now and then

  131. is even though obviously many people read,

  132. but books were expensive and very rare.

  133. And so it was fundamentally an oral culture.

  134. And it was an oral culture

  135. where people actually remembered things

  136. because they weren't constantly distracted

  137. by text messages,

  138. emails, phone calls,

  139. Twitter, Facebook,

  140. all of that type of stuff.

  141. You know, I told my wife the other day

  142. that often I turn off the sound with my phone

  143. during the day.

  144. I try to remember to leave it up so I can see.

  145. And that's just because the text messages

  146. can be really irritating.

  147. And if you're at all like me,

  148. there's something compelling

  149. as if you have to look at the stupid text.

  150. Well, you don't really, right?

  151. But you feel like you do.

  152. And it gives you several other irritating dings

  153. to make you think you have to look at it.

  154. Anyway, in their world,

  155. they wouldn't have had those types of distractions.

  156. And they were an oral culture.

  157. So often, one of the reasons

  158. they probably chose this story

  159. is not only the putting together,

  160. juxtaposition, which is a big word

  161. that just means putting together

  162. of these two very...

  163. They would have looked at it and said,

  164. you know, you remember that time

  165. when this happened

  166. and it was immediately followed by this

  167. and it was really striking.

  168. And the other thing,

  169. and this would help with memory,

  170. is that the woman has been suffering

  171. for 12 years

  172. and the girl is 12 years old.

  173. And, you know, that's one of the things

  174. to help you remember things, right?

  175. The number, that connection of the 12

  176. helps you to remember them

  177. and even helps to see,

  178. remember that the two things were connected

  179. because sometimes they might have said,

  180. gosh, he healed so many people.

  181. Was it that woman he healed?

  182. No, no, you know,

  183. they might even have...

  184. But this one would have really stuck out

  185. partially just because they happened

  186. right after each other

  187. and partly the 12.

  188. Helps them to remember.

  189. And the other thing, by the way,

  190. is that everything in this text,

  191. even the using of his name,

  192. is once again,

  193. part of what Mark is doing

  194. is to say this actually happened.

  195. This is historical.

  196. The fact that he gives the name

  197. of an important person

  198. and the fact that he mentions

  199. that lots of people were around.

  200. This is all the way that if Paul,

  201. not Paul,

  202. Mark is writing this

  203. and he's writing it at the time

  204. that many of these eye and ear witnesses

  205. were still alive

  206. and he's really constantly inviting people

  207. to say,

  208. listen, if you have any questions about this,

  209. get on a boat,

  210. go to this area.

  211. It's going to be in and around Capernaum,

  212. maybe even Capernaum

  213. and just look for Jairus.

  214. He's still around

  215. and talk to him about it.

  216. Like it's part of the way

  217. that Mark is writing it

  218. to help us to remember

  219. that this actually happened.

  220. So I'm not going to give an apologetic

  221. about miracles in this sermon once again

  222. just because of time constraints.

  223. But in a very, very real sense,

  224. if this is an historical account

  225. written at a time

  226. when many of the eyewitnesses

  227. were still alive,

  228. this in and of itself

  229. is something that should make

  230. an open-minded person say,

  231. maybe we don't live

  232. in a closed universe.

  233. Maybe there is a God

  234. that does exist.

  235. Maybe there is a personal God.

  236. Because Mark is trying to drive home

  237. that this is something

  238. that actually happened.

  239. So, the next little bit

  240. has actually caused Christians

  241. a lot of trouble.

  242. And it's, in fact,

  243. it's sometimes

  244. I've come across

  245. Jehovah Witnesses

  246. who occasionally

  247. have mentioned this

  248. as an example

  249. of why Jesus isn't God.

  250. It's caused trouble

  251. to Christians as well.

  252. It's a very puzzling thing

  253. that happens

  254. over the next few verses.

  255. And in some ways

  256. what happens

  257. is these little puzzles

  258. that deflect us

  259. from the really big thing

  260. that's going on in the text.

  261. But we have to look at them.

  262. Well, look what goes on.

  263. Verse 27, right?

  264. So, the woman has suffered.

  265. Verse 27,

  266. she had heard the reports

  267. about Jesus

  268. and came up behind him

  269. in the crowd

  270. and touched his garment.

  271. And in the original language,

  272. you might see,

  273. if you ever go to Israel,

  274. you'll see that

  275. more orthodox,

  276. devout Jews,

  277. they'll often have these tassels,

  278. certain colors

  279. on their garments.

  280. And basically,

  281. she just touches

  282. one of the tassels

  283. of the garment.

  284. For she said,

  285. verse 28,

  286. if I touch even his garments,

  287. I will be made well.

  288. And immediately,

  289. the flow of blood dried up

  290. and she felt in her body

  291. that she was healed

  292. of her disease.

  293. And Jesus,

  294. perceiving in himself

  295. that power

  296. had gone out from him,

  297. immediately turned about

  298. in the crowd

  299. and said,

  300. who touched my garments?

  301. And his disciples

  302. said to him,

  303. you see the crowd

  304. pressing around you

  305. and yet you say,

  306. who touched me?

  307. And I tried to bring out

  308. in my way of reading it

  309. is the original language

  310. they rebuked Jesus.

  311. They're putting him down.

  312. Like he's asking

  313. a stupid question.

  314. Duh.

  315. If we were maybe trying

  316. to put it in

  317. more modern Canadian.

  318. Duh.

  319. Like all sorts of people

  320. are touching you.

  321. So like,

  322. you look at this

  323. and you go,

  324. like what's going on?

  325. Like I thought Jesus was God.

  326. How come he didn't know

  327. who's touched him?

  328. And come on,

  329. like what's going on?

  330. Is he like a walking horseshoe?

  331. Is he like a walking rabbit's foot?

  332. A walking,

  333. you know,

  334. lucky charm

  335. and you touch it

  336. and something happens?

  337. Like this is,

  338. like what?

  339. Like what's going on

  340. in this text?

  341. It just seems sort of

  342. not right.

  343. So this is one of

  344. many texts.

  345. It's one of the things

  346. in the text

  347. that it's a very,

  348. very interesting thing

  349. to meditate upon

  350. and to contemplate

  351. because it's a really

  352. good window

  353. into something

  354. that we could

  355. begin to understand

  356. but not really understand

  357. because it's talking

  358. about how it is

  359. that Jesus can be

  360. fully God

  361. and fully human

  362. but one person

  363. and at the same time.

  364. So like,

  365. here's the first thing.

  366. If Jesus never asked

  367. a question,

  368. he wouldn't be human.

  369. If Jesus never asked

  370. a question,

  371. he wouldn't be human.

  372. I mean,

  373. there's a couple

  374. of babies here.

  375. I mean,

  376. you can ask,

  377. you know,

  378. that family over there.

  379. If their baby,

  380. as soon as they learn

  381. the first words,

  382. just starts lecturing them

  383. on the Einstein's

  384. theory of relativity

  385. or,

  386. you know,

  387. if you ask them

  388. what's the,

  389. you know,

  390. if a number

  391. with,

  392. you know,

  393. 11 digits

  394. is a prime number

  395. or not

  396. and they can tell you,

  397. you know,

  398. like that would just,

  399. that wouldn't be

  400. a human baby.

  401. Like you'd,

  402. I don't know

  403. what you'd think.

  404. It's some type of,

  405. I don't know

  406. what you'd think.

  407. It's not human.

  408. So if Jesus never

  409. asked a question,

  410. he wouldn't be human.

  411. And it's interesting,

  412. we have a problem

  413. asking this,

  414. like how come

  415. Jesus asked the question?

  416. Isn't he supposed

  417. to be God?

  418. But none of the,

  419. none of the disciples

  420. ask that question.

  421. It's not as if they go,

  422. whoa,

  423. Jesus just asked a question.

  424. What's going on?

  425. No,

  426. they would have been used

  427. to him asking questions

  428. all the time

  429. because human beings

  430. ask questions.

  431. And actually this is

  432. in a very,

  433. very small way.

  434. One of the things

  435. that we just sort of

  436. take for granted

  437. in our Western culture,

  438. in our Western culture,

  439. we take it for granted

  440. that it's a smart thing

  441. and a wise thing

  442. to ask questions.

  443. But that's actually

  444. partly how we've been formed

  445. at a very deep level

  446. by the Christian faith.

  447. It's not obvious

  448. in Islamic

  449. or Eastern cultures

  450. that it's a virtue

  451. to ask questions.

  452. In those questions,

  453. it's a virtue

  454. to accept,

  455. to just accept.

  456. And so Jesus

  457. is actually grounding

  458. at a very deep level

  459. the importance

  460. of questions.

  461. And he is human.

  462. Now,

  463. the second thing is,

  464. and this is where

  465. the text is a bit

  466. of a mirror

  467. to help us

  468. look at ourselves,

  469. is that part of the reason

  470. we have a hard time

  471. wondering how it is

  472. that Jesus could ask

  473. a question

  474. if he's supposed

  475. to be God

  476. is because

  477. if we were God,

  478. we would only

  479. tell people

  480. what to do.

  481. I mean,

  482. we already,

  483. many of us

  484. already think

  485. we're gods

  486. and we're always right,

  487. but dang it all

  488. if I'm God,

  489. not only would I tell you

  490. all the time,

  491. you want to know

  492. the right view

  493. on what Trudeau

  494. should be doing?

  495. I'm going to tell you.

  496. You're not interested?

  497. You should be interested.

  498. I'm God.

  499. Like,

  500. that's what I would do

  501. all the time.

  502. That's what you would do.

  503. Right?

  504. And so part of this

  505. is,

  506. so part of the problem

  507. is it shows,

  508. in a sense,

  509. the humility of God.

  510. we want to be like God

  511. and are proud.

  512. And if we had the power,

  513. we would be forcing people

  514. to shut up

  515. and listen to us.

  516. And so what the Bible

  517. is revealing here

  518. is that God,

  519. the Son of God,

  520. that it's part of

  521. the big story,

  522. that God,

  523. the Son of God,

  524. sets aside His glory,

  525. His prerogatives,

  526. His appearance as God,

  527. His power as God,

  528. but still maintaining

  529. the fact in nature

  530. that He is God,

  531. but He willingly sets

  532. that all aside

  533. to enter into

  534. our human world

  535. and to take into Himself

  536. our human nature.

  537. And so what that means

  538. is that,

  539. and you can't figure out

  540. the psychology of that,

  541. but what's constantly revealed

  542. then in the Scriptures

  543. is that in a sense,

  544. unlike us,

  545. Jesus lived,

  546. part of His constant temptation

  547. is would He continue

  548. to just trust

  549. that the Father

  550. would reveal to Him

  551. and give Him

  552. the things He needs

  553. as He needs them?

  554. I mean,

  555. that's partly what's going on

  556. with the temptation

  557. by the devil,

  558. which isn't recorded

  559. in Mark,

  560. but it's recorded

  561. in Matthew and Luke,

  562. is that would Jesus

  563. just actually be content

  564. to trust His Father?

  565. If His Father wants Him

  566. to know something,

  567. He'll know something.

  568. But does He want to know?

  569. Does He want to grasp

  570. back that power?

  571. And we're all familiar

  572. with the fact

  573. of curtailing

  574. our power

  575. to be with.

  576. like if you have

  577. young children,

  578. the Sunday school teachers

  579. out there,

  580. I mean,

  581. if you're visiting

  582. your nephew

  583. and your niece

  584. and you play

  585. or you maybe even

  586. wrestle a little bit

  587. with your two-year-old,

  588. one of my children,

  589. no,

  590. I won't tell you the story.

  591. I try not to tell stories

  592. that might embarrass my children

  593. and then you'll all

  594. wonder which one.

  595. But, you know,

  596. if we were playing

  597. with your nephew

  598. and niece,

  599. a little two-year-old,

  600. well, you don't beat them

  601. because you're way stronger

  602. than them.

  603. You curtail your power.

  604. To beat them

  605. is called child abuse, right?

  606. The right type of thing

  607. is you let them

  608. wrestle you to the ground

  609. or her wrestle you

  610. to the ground

  611. and tackle you

  612. and all of that type.

  613. You're just having fun, right?

  614. So we all understand

  615. what it means

  616. to curtail the power

  617. and that's what you're

  618. getting on here with Jesus.

  619. For this particular reason,

  620. the Father didn't want Him

  621. to know.

  622. So now you see something

  623. that He did all the time.

  624. He asked a question

  625. because He's human.

  626. He doesn't know.

  627. And He wants to find out

  628. for a variety of reasons.

  629. And then the other thing,

  630. this weird, weird thing

  631. is that why is it

  632. that Jesus,

  633. why is it that

  634. Jesus,

  635. she just touched Him

  636. and now the text

  637. is very clear.

  638. It sounds as if

  639. if you read it

  640. not very closely,

  641. it sounds as if

  642. somehow her faith

  643. is if faith

  644. is some type of

  645. internal power

  646. that you unleash

  647. and if you unleash

  648. this internal power

  649. then you're healing,

  650. you get healed

  651. and you can do this

  652. and you can do,

  653. no, no, no, no.

  654. The text is very clear

  655. that the power

  656. comes from Jesus.

  657. The woman purely receives.

  658. She doesn't add anything to it.

  659. All she's done

  660. is put herself

  661. in a place

  662. where she can receive

  663. and it all comes

  664. from Jesus.

  665. But what this also

  666. is showing

  667. is it's showing

  668. who Jesus is

  669. in His very nature.

  670. It's showing

  671. who God is

  672. in His very nature.

  673. Give you an example.

  674. Imagine that

  675. maybe one of you folks

  676. we become

  677. very, very good friends

  678. and I happen to discover

  679. as we become friends

  680. that you're very,

  681. very, very generous

  682. but you're especially

  683. generous towards

  684. your friends.

  685. Just very open-handed.

  686. Not clutching at all.

  687. Just very, very open-handed.

  688. And maybe it's something

  689. like I'm going to go

  690. to an area

  691. and there's no parking

  692. and I know that you live

  693. in a certain house

  694. and I'm with

  695. one of you other folks

  696. and I just pull

  697. into the driveway

  698. and park.

  699. And the person

  700. beside me would go,

  701. you can't park

  702. in somebody's driveway.

  703. And I go

  704. and I knock on the door

  705. to see if they're there

  706. and they're not there

  707. and the person beside me

  708. would say,

  709. no, you just can't go

  710. park in their driveway.

  711. Like, what?

  712. But I'd say,

  713. no, no, no, no, no.

  714. I know what they're like

  715. and they're really,

  716. really generous

  717. and they're very generous

  718. towards me

  719. and I know that I can

  720. park in their driveway

  721. even if they're not home.

  722. There'll be no problem.

  723. Just trust me.

  724. There's no problem.

  725. Because you know

  726. what they're like.

  727. And that's what

  728. you're seeing here

  729. about Jesus.

  730. That's what he's like.

  731. He heals.

  732. That's his nature.

  733. And this, by the way,

  734. is very, very mind-blowing

  735. because just you have

  736. to keep remembering

  737. that if you study

  738. the gods and goddesses

  739. of the day,

  740. the gods and the gods

  741. of the gods

  742. and goddesses

  743. of the day,

  744. they lied,

  745. they cheated,

  746. they raped,

  747. they hurt.

  748. They were completely,

  749. they were thin-skinned

  750. and you never knew

  751. if you did something

  752. to offend them

  753. and if you offended them

  754. they would make

  755. your life miserable.

  756. And that's what

  757. the gods and goddesses

  758. are like.

  759. And what you're seeing here

  760. is the real God

  761. and this real God

  762. is radically different

  763. than the other gods.

  764. And it's still even true today

  765. where one of the major religions

  766. of the world,

  767. fundamentally,

  768. that major religion

  769. is a religion

  770. of a warrior,

  771. triumph,

  772. militaristic God.

  773. And the other fundamental option

  774. is a God

  775. that at the end of the day

  776. says there's no difference

  777. between sickness and health

  778. because you're just going to die

  779. and get reborn

  780. and you're just going to die

  781. and get reborn.

  782. And in the face

  783. of such alternatives

  784. you have this radical picture

  785. of a God

  786. whose fundamental nature

  787. is to give you health.

  788. To come into contact with him

  789. is to come into contact

  790. with health.

  791. To come into contact with him

  792. is to come into contact

  793. with life.

  794. To poke this God

  795. is to poke health.

  796. Just constant,

  797. self-giving,

  798. generous,

  799. open-handed.

  800. Like there's that song

  801. The Reckless Love of God.

  802. Just reckless health.

  803. That's who he is

  804. and that's what's being revealed

  805. here in this story.

  806. And her tiniest,

  807. tiniest,

  808. tiniest sliver of faith

  809. and maybe it's mixed

  810. with some superstition,

  811. who knows what,

  812. she can't pass

  813. a theology test,

  814. she can't,

  815. she's never taken,

  816. you know,

  817. theology one

  818. and the nature of God.

  819. She just knows

  820. that if she can just touch him,

  821. she suspects,

  822. she's heard the stories

  823. and she believes it

  824. and she trusts

  825. that he's this type of person

  826. and he can do it

  827. and she does it

  828. and he does all the rest

  829. even if he's not conscious of it.

  830. Now,

  831. the next bit,

  832. you see,

  833. here's one of the things

  834. about the Bible

  835. that we don't often

  836. take it for granted.

  837. we just look at

  838. and we take it for granted

  839. that he's going to act

  840. a certain way.

  841. Partially that's because

  842. the stories like this

  843. have formed

  844. how our culture thinks

  845. even if we reject it

  846. but it's formed

  847. how we think.

  848. But the fact of the matter

  849. is that every single one of us,

  850. some of us more than others,

  851. we are used to put downs.

  852. We are used to being denigrated.

  853. We are used to being dismissed.

  854. It's interesting

  855. if you watch

  856. Raising,

  857. I think it's called

  858. Raising Dion.

  859. It's this thing on Netflix

  860. about an eight-year-old

  861. who develops superpowers.

  862. It's sort of a funny

  863. type of thing.

  864. But one of the main characters

  865. is a very interesting thing

  866. on Netflix

  867. because one of the main characters

  868. is a severely handicapped

  869. young woman,

  870. young girl.

  871. It's very,

  872. very unusual

  873. to have a very severely

  874. handicapped young girl

  875. as one of the stars

  876. of a thing.

  877. And one of the things

  878. which is very interesting

  879. about her

  880. when they're trying to describe

  881. what her superpower is,

  882. she says she's invisible.

  883. Well, why is she invisible?

  884. Because handicapped people

  885. are invisible.

  886. And many of us

  887. are familiar with

  888. what it's like

  889. to be invisible.

  890. And so if you just think

  891. about that for a second,

  892. you'll understand

  893. the drama

  894. that's going on here

  895. in the text.

  896. Look again what happens.

  897. Look at verse 32.

  898. He looked around

  899. to see who had done it,

  900. but the woman,

  901. knowing what had happened to her,

  902. she'd been hiding,

  903. right?

  904. Came in fear and trembling

  905. and fell down before him

  906. and told him the whole truth.

  907. Well, why is she so worried?

  908. She's an invisible woman.

  909. The last 12 years

  910. of her life

  911. have been 12 years

  912. where she's constantly

  913. denigrated,

  914. put down,

  915. kicked to the sideline.

  916. That's the real world

  917. for her.

  918. And if you're here

  919. and that's your real world,

  920. this story's for you.

  921. So he tells him

  922. the old truth.

  923. She's hiding

  924. and hiding and hiding.

  925. She's terrified

  926. that when she comes forward,

  927. he's going to say,

  928. well, I didn't mean

  929. to heal you.

  930. I'm going to take it back.

  931. You know,

  932. really, you?

  933. I thought it would have been

  934. somebody better looking,

  935. hipper, cooler, younger,

  936. has a big Instagram following,

  937. like, I don't know,

  938. influencer.

  939. What does he say,

  940. verse 34?

  941. This is why Jesus

  942. is so radical

  943. and so powerful.

  944. Look at verse 34.

  945. And he said to her daughter,

  946. daughter,

  947. that means,

  948. that's affection.

  949. That's affection.

  950. Daughter,

  951. not invisible woman,

  952. not person I don't care,

  953. not a loser in our culture,

  954. but daughter.

  955. Your faith has made you well.

  956. And that can also be

  957. equally translated

  958. as your faith has saved you.

  959. Go in peace

  960. and be healed

  961. of your disease.

  962. Now, this next part,

  963. my guess is,

  964. I don't know if this room

  965. would be 50-50 on this,

  966. but there's definitely divide.

  967. And we all know who we are.

  968. I would be the type,

  969. and I'm not boasting about this,

  970. this is something

  971. you need to pray

  972. that I get over.

  973. I would be the type,

  974. if it was my daughter,

  975. I'd be saying,

  976. Jesus,

  977. like, don't stop.

  978. Like, my daughter's sick.

  979. Like, don't stop.

  980. Like, I'd be the guy

  981. wanting to grab him,

  982. you know,

  983. by his tassels,

  984. not to be healed,

  985. but to say,

  986. listen, you know,

  987. that woman,

  988. she just don't care about that.

  989. You don't need to know that.

  990. You don't need to know who touched.

  991. I'd be pulling him.

  992. That's the type of person I am.

  993. Some of you type

  994. might be saying,

  995. really?

  996. There's people like that

  997. in the world?

  998. Like, that's like my annoying dad

  999. or my annoying mom

  1000. or sister.

  1001. Because some of you

  1002. would just be very,

  1003. very content,

  1004. just trusting.

  1005. I'm just telling you,

  1006. for those of you

  1007. who are very, very,

  1008. and maybe that's what

  1009. Jairus is like,

1010. that he was just very,

  1011. very calm.

  1012. But for,

1013. so there's two sort of

  1014. emotional ways

  1015. of understanding

  1016. what's just happened.

1017. But for those of you

1018. who are more like me,

1019. who wants to move them along,

  1020. get with the program,

  1021. Jesus.

  1022. That's what I'm thinking.

  1023. Don't stop.

  1024. You need to go

1025. and you need to get

  1026. to my place, right?

1027. And so now he's going

  1028. to move on.

  1029. But while Jesus

  1030. is still speaking,

  1031. we don't get told

  1032. all the other things

  1033. that Jesus says,

1034. but he speaks for a while

  1035. about this woman.

  1036. Verse 35,

1037. while he was still speaking,

1038. there came from the ruler's house

  1039. some who said,

1040. and in the original language,

  1041. the implication is

  1042. they sort of take

  1043. the Jairus aside

1044. and they sort of whisper

  1045. into his ear,

  1046. your daughter is dead.

1047. And it'd probably be tears,

  1048. like me telling you

  1049. about Rocky.

  1050. Your daughter's dead.

  1051. Why trouble a teacher

  1052. any further?

  1053. But Jesus overhears.

  1054. He overhears.

  1055. But overhearing

  1056. what they said,

1057. Jesus said to the ruler

  1058. of the synagogue,

  1059. do not fear,

  1060. only believe.

1061. Now one of the things

  1062. which is very interesting

  1063. in the story here

1064. is that we don't wait

  1065. to actually see

  1066. whether the Jairus

  1067. has actually any faith.

  1068. Because believe and faith

1069. are sort of the same way

  1070. of translating

  1071. the same basic word.

  1072. I mean,

  1073. I'll be honest,

  1074. if I was Jairus,

  1075. I'd say,

  1076. yeah, yeah, yeah,

  1077. Jesus, I have faith,

  1078. but I don't have any faith.

  1079. I have no faith.

  1080. And here you actually

  1081. get a very,

  1082. very powerful window

  1083. into what it is.

  1084. Remember,

  1085. faith is connecting.

  1086. That's ultimately

  1087. what it is.

  1088. It's a power to connect.

  1089. And so he actually

  1090. probably has

  1091. absolutely zero,

  1092. all he's done,

  1093. he stays connected

  1094. to Jesus.

  1095. That's the bottom line

  1096. about faith.

  1097. He stays connected

  1098. to Jesus.

  1099. He stays connected

  1100. to Jesus.

  1101. verse 37.

  1102. See that,

  1103. and Jesus allows

1104. no one to follow him.

1105. The crowd is put away

  1106. except Peter and James

  1107. and John,

  1108. the brother of James.

  1109. And they came

  1110. to the house

  1111. of the ruler

  1112. of the synagogue.

  1113. So there's now

  1114. just Jairus,

  1115. Peter,

  1116. James,

  1117. and John.

1118. They came to the house

  1119. of the ruler

  1120. of the synagogue

1121. and Jesus saw a commotion,

  1122. people weeping

  1123. and wailing loudly.

  1124. And by the way,

  1125. this isn't a bad sign,

1126. that's just how they grieve.

  1127. People from that time,

1128. if they came to one

  1129. of our funerals,

  1130. they'd go,

  1131. did they even like

  1132. that person?

  1133. Like,

  1134. they're all just quiet.

  1135. Right?

  1136. Like,

  1137. we'd look at a funeral

  1138. and we'd be saying,

1139. are they all mentally ill?

  1140. Like,

1141. what's the problem with that?

  1142. But they'd be looking

  1143. at us and saying,

  1144. did they even like

  1145. the person?

1146. Just the way they grieve,

  1147. that's all.

  1148. So they're weeping

  1149. and wailing loudly.

  1150. Verse 39,

1151. And when Jesus had entered,

  1152. he said to them,

  1153. Why are you making

  1154. a commotion and weeping?

1155. The child is not dead,

  1156. but sleeping.

  1157. Now,

1158. just sort of pause here.

  1159. This has caused

  1160. lots of debate

  1161. in commentaries

  1162. in other circles.

  1163. And just to emphasize

1164. that if you could go back

  1165. in a time machine

1166. and you had a doctor

  1167. with you,

1168. and you could go back

  1169. in a time machine

1170. and also get the ability

  1171. to understand Aramaic

  1172. or Hebrew or Greek

  1173. or whatever they're speaking,

  1174. the doctor would pronounce

  1175. the girl dead.

  1176. So Jesus isn't saying,

  1177. no, no, no, no,

  1178. she's just in a coma.

  1179. He's not saying that.

  1180. What he's doing

  1181. is he's speaking

  1182. to the disciples,

1183. he's speaking down the years,

1184. he's speaking to you and me,

  1185. and he's giving us

  1186. one of the images.

  1187. This whole story

  1188. is giving us

  1189. one of the images,

  1190. not all of them,

1191. but one of the images

  1192. for us to understand

1193. our own death in Jesus.

1194. And one of the fundamental ways,

1195. one of the fundamental ways

1196. to understand your death in Jesus

1197. if you are in Christ

1198. is that when it comes time

  1199. for me to death,

  1200. to die in Christ,

1201. I am falling asleep in Christ.

1202. And I can look forward

  1203. to the day

  1204. when just as Jesus

  1205. is about to do

  1206. to the young girl,

1207. he's going to say to me,

1208. he's going to say to me,

  1209. wake up.

  1210. Wake up.

  1211. And arise.

1212. That is the Christian hope.

1213. That in the far side of death,

  1214. one day,

1215. I am asleep in Christ,

  1216. and he will appear,

  1217. and he will say,

  1218. George,

  1219. wake up.

  1220. Arise and walk.

1221. And in that new heaven

1222. and in that new earth

  1223. with a resurrected body,

  1224. I will arise,

  1225. and I will walk

  1226. in that new heaven

  1227. and that new earth,

  1228. and I will eat

  1229. in that new heaven

  1230. and that new earth,

1231. because I will be at home

  1232. in that new heaven

  1233. and that new earth,

1234. not because of anything in me,

  1235. but because of Christ.

  1236. Christ.

1237. And that is your destiny

  1238. in Christ.

  1239. In Christ,

  1240. love is stronger

  1241. than death.

  1242. In Christ,

  1243. death does not have

  1244. the final word.

  1245. In Christ,

1246. life has the final word.

1247. Christ has the final word.

  1248. And that final word

  1249. is the first word

  1250. of the new beginning,

  1251. because I will walk

  1252. in that new world

  1253. and eat and dwell

  1254. and be at home

  1255. in that new world

  1256. with my Savior.

1257. So he doesn't say sleeping

  1258. because he thinks

  1259. she's asleep.

  1260. He says sleeping

1261. so that you and I

  1262. can have a powerful

  1263. and wonderful image,

  1264. one image,

  1265. of what it means

  1266. to die in Christ.

  1267. Verse 40,

1268. and they laughed at him,

  1269. made fun of him.

1270. He put them all outside

  1271. and took the child's

  1272. father and mother

1273. and those who were with him

1274. and went in where the child was

1275. and taking her by the hand.

  1276. He said to her,

  1277. Talitha Kumi,

  1278. which is Aramaic,

  1279. a language which doesn't exist

  1280. fundamentally anymore,

  1281. which means,

  1282. little girl,

  1283. I say to you,

  1284. arise.

  1285. And immediately,

  1286. the girl got up

  1287. and began walking,

1288. for she was 12 years of age

  1289. and they were immediately

  1290. overcome with amazement

1291. and he strictly charged them

1292. that no one should know this

1293. and told them to give her

  1294. something to eat.

1295. Just sort of in closing

  1296. about this,

1297. just a couple of things.

1298. I'm going to talk about this

1299. a little bit more next week

  1300. because the next text

1301. which immediately comes after this

1302. is a case where Jesus

  1303. goes to his hometown

1304. and they look down their nose at him

1305. and they have no faith

1306. and he heals very few people.

1307. So I'm going to talk about this

1308. a little bit more next week,

  1309. God willing.

1310. But one of the things

1311. just to say about this

1312. as I'm sort of wrapping it up

1313. is that this gives us Christians,

  1314. so first of all,

  1315. this is why Christians

  1316. invented hospitals

  1317. because we're about healing.

  1318. We should be.

1319. Now I know we have all sorts of,

  1320. you know,

  1321. and we're about healing

1322. and we should be praying

  1323. that people come up

  1324. with better medicines

1325. and we should pray for the sick

1326. and we should pray in faith.

1327. And if you pray in faith

  1328. as a Christian,

  1329. there's three basic outcomes.

1330. The first outcome is this,

  1331. that God,

  1332. that Christ might heal

1333. the person you're praying for

  1334. miraculously and instantaneously

1335. and probably many of us

  1336. have stories of that

  1337. actually happening.

  1338. The second thing is

  1339. sometimes he heals slowly,

1340. a combination maybe of providence

1341. and of things like medicine.

1342. And the third thing is,

1343. and this is the most important,

  1344. is that in Christ

  1345. he will heal finally

  1346. in the resurrection.

1347. The loved one that you have

  1348. whose body is racked

  1349. with Parkinson's or cancer

  1350. and seems to be

  1351. but a shadow or a husk

  1352. or a grotesque-looking being

1353. far from what you had known

  1354. and loved

  1355. in Christ

  1356. will walk.

  1357. The healing is final

  1358. and eternal.

  1359. The second thing is

1360. that I think all human beings

  1361. have an intuition.

  1362. I mean, it's very, very funny.

1363. I'm not recommending you watch this,

1364. but if you watch Ricky Gervais'

  1365. Three Seasons of Afterlife,

1366. which sometimes is very wise,

  1367. sometimes is very funny,

1368. sometimes is just grossly disgusting,

1369. sometimes is filled with hatred

  1370. of human beings.

  1371. But Ricky Gervais,

  1372. who's been an atheist

  1373. almost his entire life,

1374. is a very public atheist.

1375. You can really see him

  1376. wrestling with the fact

  1377. because the whole thing

  1378. is about a man

  1379. who loves his wife

  1380. who dies of cancer

  1381. and considers suicide.

  1382. And you see there,

  1383. he has no categories

  1384. to deal with it,

1385. but there's this fundamental intuition

1386. that love should be stronger

  1387. than death

  1388. and that death

1389. can't really be the end.

1390. And one of the things

1391. that we see in this story

  1392. is that that intuition

  1393. actually became fact

1394. and walked about in history.

  1395. health,

  1396. life,

  1397. walked among us

1398. and his name is Jesus.

  1399. And the second thing

1400. that you can see in this story,

  1401. and this shows you

1402. the importance of the cross,

  1403. one of the images

  1404. that you'll see it

  1405. towards the end

1406. of the Gospel of Mark

  1407. is just before Jesus

  1408. goes to the cross

1409. and I've talked about this before

1410. and I love this image

1411. and hopefully some of you

1412. love this image as well,

1413. is that Jesus is wrestling

  1414. with the fact

  1415. that when he's dying

  1416. upon the cross

1417. that what he's actually doing

1418. is he's taking the cup

  1419. from the Father.

  1420. And the cup

1421. is this Old Testament image.

  1422. And as I've shared

  1423. with you before,

  1424. what you can picture

1425. is that in a sense

  1426. everything about me

  1427. that's shameful,

  1428. everything about me

  1429. that's bad,

  1430. everything about me

  1431. that is wrong.

1432. And if you could just imagine

  1433. an evil wizard

  1434. or something like that,

1435. but in this case it's God

  1436. who somehow or another

1437. could take all of that evil,

  1438. all of that shame

  1439. and it would become

  1440. this foul,

  1441. foul,

  1442. disgusting looking liquid

  1443. that drips out

1444. and all comes into a cup

1445. and at the end of it

  1446. it's almost as if

  1447. God would ring me

  1448. to make sure

  1449. that every single bit

  1450. in me

  1451. that is proud

  1452. and lustful

  1453. and envious

  1454. and greedy

  1455. and hateful

  1456. and prejudiced

  1457. and everything

  1458. in me

  1459. from the moment

  1460. of my conception

  1461. to the moment

  1462. of my death,

1463. it's wrung out of me

  1464. and it becomes

  1465. like a cup

  1466. and what you're

  1467. to understand

  1468. when Jesus dies

  1469. upon the cross

  1470. is in his death

  1471. upon the cross

  1472. what you see

  1473. is Jesus

  1474. drinking your cup.

  1475. because he's man

  1476. he can drink it

  1477. for human beings

1478. and because he is God

  1479. he can drink it

  1480. for every person

  1481. it's as if

1482. he looks around the room

  1483. and he sees you

  1484. he took the sip

  1485. he sees you

  1486. he drank the cup

  1487. he sees you

  1488. he drank the cup

  1489. and when you see

  1490. Jesus dying

  1491. upon the cross

  1492. you see him

  1493. drinking that cup

  1494. and you see

  1495. this is a very

  1496. very wonderful thing

1497. because in this new heaven

1498. and in this new earth

  1499. and this salvation

1500. that you get in Christ

  1501. is that young girl

  1502. she died

  1503. but she

  1504. she enters

  1505. the realm of death

  1506. but at the

  1507. Jesus calls her back

1508. from the realm of the dead

1509. to this side of the grave

1510. but she will one day die

  1511. Jesus

  1512. drinks your cup

  1513. and mine

  1514. and the cup

  1515. of every human being

  1516. that he enters

  1517. into all there is

  1518. to taste of death

1519. and at the end of the day

  1520. on the third day

1521. he rises on the far side

  1522. of death

  1523. having drunk your cup

  1524. and that means

  1525. that in his death

  1526. and resurrection

  1527. every single bit

  1528. of evil and shame

1529. that you have ever done

  1530. or ever will do

1531. he is drunk for you

  1532. and when you put

  1533. your faith and trust

  1534. in him

  1535. you are putting

  1536. your faith and trust

  1537. in the one

1538. who is on that far

  1539. side of death

  1540. and has drunk

  1541. your cup

  1542. and it means

  1543. there is nothing

  1544. that is ever going

  1545. to come up

1546. that will so shock him

  1547. and make him repulsive

  1548. and dismiss you

1549. that he will turn away

  1550. from you

  1551. the health

  1552. and the life

  1553. that you have

  1554. in Christ

  1555. is eternal

1556. you don't have to worry

  1557. that something

1558. that something will come out

  1559. that will make him

  1560. change his mind

  1561. it isn't as if

1562. you know in those movies

  1563. where you think

1564. you've killed the bad guy

  1565. and then you see

  1566. the little finger

  1567. twitch a tiny bit

  1568. and you realize

  1569. the monster

  1570. hasn't been killed

  1571. when you receive

  1572. the health from Christ

1573. when you die in Christ

1574. in a sensory in him

  1575. there's no twitch

  1576. of your old man

  1577. it's all consumed

  1578. all dealt with

  1579. in the cross

  1580. and you share

  1581. in his resurrection

  1582. brothers and sisters

  1583. that's my hope

1584. that is a Christian hope

  1585. I am by nature

  1586. a marsh wiggle

  1587. if I had a patron saint

  1588. whose name would be

  1589. Puddle Glum

  1590. I am not a natural optimist

1591. but that is the Christian hope

  1592. that is my hope

  1593. and my prayer is

  1594. that that will be

  1595. more and more

  1596. your hope

  1597. please stand

  1598. if you're here

  1599. if you're watching

1600. I just want to say to you

  1601. the story about

  1602. what Jesus did

  1603. to that woman

  1604. there is nobody

  1605. so bad

  1606. or so dismissed

  1607. or so invisible

1608. that Jesus doesn't see you

  1609. and he didn't die

  1610. for you as well

  1611. nobody

1612. and all you have to do

  1613. is just say

  1614. Jesus

  1615. be my savior

  1616. and my lord

  1617. be my health

  1618. and my healing

  1619. and thank you

  1620. that you will never

  1621. let me go

  1622. and he will hear

  1623. your call

  1624. and your prayer

  1625. and he will make

  1626. you his

  1627. let's bow our heads

  1628. in prayer

  1629. father thank you

  1630. so much

  1631. that Jesus

  1632. loved us so much

  1633. thank you father

  1634. that he in humility

  1635. and in love

1636. was willing to set aside

  1637. his prerogatives

  1638. and his glory

  1639. and his power

  1640. as God

  1641. to come amongst us

  1642. to be Emmanuel

1643. to be God with us

  1644. to be with us

  1645. in our mess

  1646. only without sin

  1647. thank you

  1648. thank you that he

  1649. knows us so perfectly

1650. and loves us so perfectly

  1651. and so deeply

  1652. and thank you father

  1653. that you don't weigh

  1654. our merits

  1655. that you know

  1656. every single one

  1657. of our offenses

1658. and that when we put

  1659. our faith and trust

  1660. in Jesus

  1661. that every one

  1662. of those offenses

  1663. is gone

1664. and that you clothe us

  1665. father

  1666. in Jesus'

  1667. perfect life

  1668. that you clothe us

  1669. in his health

  1670. in his life

  1671. in his light

  1672. in his goodness

  1673. in his mercy

  1674. in his justice

  1675. that that's how

  1676. you clothe us

  1677. and it's all father

  1678. an act of grace

  1679. which is so remarkable

  1680. and so deep

  1681. and so wide

  1682. and so thick

  1683. that we desperately

  1684. need to come together

  1685. once a week

1686. to be reminded of it

  1687. because it so easily

  1688. flits from our mind

  1689. it is so big

  1690. and yet so real

  1691. and we thank you

  1692. that you offer it

  1693. to people like us

  1694. and father

  1695. we ask that you

  1696. fan into flame

  1697. with us

  1698. an ever deeper

  1699. hope in Jesus

  1700. as our hope

  1701. of glory

  1702. our hope

  1703. of life

  1704. our hope

  1705. of health

1706. that he is our hope

  1707. and help us

  1708. to bear witness

  1709. to that

  1710. in a culture

  1711. which has closed

  1712. its ears

  1713. but you still

  1714. have those father

  1715. who want

  1716. that you know

  1717. you are calling

  1718. to yourself

  1719. and help us father

  1720. to bear witness

  1721. to Jesus

  1722. and we ask this

1723. in the name of Jesus

  1724. your son

  1725. and our savior

  1726. amen
