  1. we're going to use a couple of questions from the Heidelberg Catechism.

  2. Now we're going to return to the ideas that we find here as we come to Jesus' teaching later.

  3. But as we consider what God's law requires, and as it causes us to reflect on how we have done in terms of our obedience,

  4. that then leads us to see the importance of confessing our sin.

  5. And we're going to use a section of Daniel 9 to help us in that.

  6. So again, this is a couple of questions and answers.

  7. If I read the question then, if you're able, you can share the answer with me.

  8. What does God's law require of us?

  9. Christ teaches us this in summary in Matthew 22, 37 to 40.

  10. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  11. This is the greatest and first commandment.

  12. And a second is like it.

  13. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  14. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

  15. The next question.

  16. Can you live up to all this perfectly?

  17. No, I have a natural tendency to hate God and my neighbor.

  18. And as we recognize that in our own hearts, let me lead us in a prayer of confession drawn from Daniel 9.

  19. Lord God, we would confess with the prophet Daniel.

  20. We are covered with shame because we have sinned against you.

  21. We have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept his laws.

  22. We have rebelled and sinned against you.

  23. We have broken your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.

  24. We also confess that you are the Lord who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments.

  25. You are the Lord who is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against you.

  26. Lord, hear our prayer.

  27. Show us favor and forgive us.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. And then we remind ourselves of some of the wonderful promises that we have in the gospel.

  31. John chapter 3, verse 16, speaks to us of the certain promise of forgiveness and eternal life.

    John 3:16

  32. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

  33. Or as we have it again in Romans 8, verse 1,

    Romans 8:1

  34. And therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  35. And now we're going to hear God's word.

  36. And Neil Campbell is going to come and read that for us from Luke chapter 18, beginning at verse 9.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  37. Thanks, Neil.

  38. To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable.

  39. Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

  40. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself.

  41. God, I thank you that I am not like other men, robbers, evildoers, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

  42. I fast twice a week and I give a tenth of all I get.

  43. But the tax collector stood at a distance.

  44. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said,

  45. God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

  46. I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.

  47. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

  48. People were bringing their babies to Jesus to have him touch them.

  49. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.

  50. But Jesus called the children to him and said,

  51. Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

  52. I tell you the truth.

  53. Anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.

  54. A certain ruler asked him,

  55. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  56. Why do you call me good?

  57. Jesus answered.

  58. No one is good except God alone.

  59. You know the commandments.

  60. Do not commit adultery.

  61. Do not murder.

  62. Do not steal.

  63. Do not give false testimony.

  64. Honor your father and mother.

  65. All these I have kept since I was a boy, he said.

  66. When Jesus heard this, he said to him,

  67. You still lack one thing.

  68. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.

  69. Then come, follow me.

  70. When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.

  71. Jesus looked at him and said,

  72. How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.

  73. Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle

  74. than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

  75. Those who heard this asked,

  76. Who then can be saved?

  77. Jesus replied,

  78. What is impossible with men is possible with God.

  79. Peter said to him,

  80. We have left all we had to follow you.

  81. I tell you the truth,

  82. Jesus said to them,

  83. No one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children

  84. for the sake of the kingdom of God

  85. will fail to receive many times as much in this age

  86. and in the age to come,

  87. eternal life.

  88. Let's come and pray to God once again.

  89. Let's pray.

  90. Lord, we thank you that throughout the pages of the Bible,

  91. we hear you,

  92. our God and Father,

  93. we hear Jesus, the Savior,

  94. inviting us to come to you,

  95. come when we are weary,

  96. come when we are burdened,

  97. and to find rest.

  98. Thank you for the reminder from this scripture

  99. that anyone can come to you and find mercy,

  100. that eternal life is not a matter of earning our way into the kingdom,

  101. but rather it's humbly and independently receiving,

  102. just like a child.

  103. Lord, we thank you for your great grace

  104. and your mercy that you show to us

  105. in and through the Lord Jesus.

  106. And so we would ask

  107. that you would give us

  108. a fresh measure and experience

  109. of your grace and your goodness,

  110. your kindness and your mercy today.

  111. And we pray especially for those who are here today

  112. with heavy hearts for different reasons,

  113. those who are struggling physically,

  114. those who are carrying heavy burdens

  115. to do with families and friendships,

  116. those who are concerned about health matters

  117. and financial matters,

  118. those who are burdened down in so many ways.

  119. Lord, may each of them and each of us

  120. be coming and laying our burdens down

  121. and resting in the Lord Jesus

  122. and knowing his kindness in a special way.

  123. Lord, we pray for anybody who perhaps feels

  124. particularly discouraged today,

  125. finding that following Jesus is hard.

  126. Pray for those who are giving up hope

  127. and wondering if things will ever get better.

  128. Lord, may the light of your glory

  129. shine in a new way today for them,

  130. that you would give living hope

  131. as you remind us of Jesus, our living Savior.

  132. Lord, we pray too for our families and our friends.

  133. We think especially of those

  134. who as yet are not followers of the Lord Jesus.

  135. Lord, one of the things that causes our hearts

  136. to feel so sad is often

  137. to think about the people we love the most

  138. who are far from the kingdom,

  139. who seem to have so little concern

  140. for their eternal well-being,

  141. who don't seem to want to hear

  142. the good news of the Lord Jesus.

  143. And we recognize that what's impossible with us

  144. is eminently possible with you,

  145. a God of powerful, saving grace.

  146. And so we pray to see transformation

  147. by your grace,

  148. that you would break down barriers,

  149. that you would soften hearts,

  150. that men and women, boys and girls,

  151. young and old,

  152. those who we pray for often,

  153. those who we've prayed for for years,

  154. that you might be drawing them

  155. so that we and they

  156. would give glory to you together.

  157. Lord, help us to pray

  158. and not to give up.

  159. Help us to remember

  160. that you are the God who loves to save.

  161. Lord, we pray too for our city

  162. and for our nation today.

  163. And we pray for those

  164. who are in authority over us

  165. locally and nationally,

  166. that with the burdens

  167. and responsibilities that they carry,

  168. Lord, with the wisdom that they need,

  169. that you would cause them

  170. to humble themselves

  171. and to seek your wisdom,

  172. to seek your faith.

  173. Help us as your people

  174. to support them in our prayers,

  175. to honour them in the way

  176. that we obey,

  177. in the way that we speak

  178. of those who rule over us.

  179. And Lord, we give you thanks too

  180. for our emergency services.

  181. And we thank you for those

  182. who sacrifice so much for us,

  183. between our health service

  184. and the police

  185. and the fire services,

  186. those who give of themselves,

  187. those who take great risks

  188. for our health

  189. and peace and security.

  190. Lord, we pray in particular

  191. for those we know

  192. who are Christians

  193. who are serving there,

  194. Lord, that you would keep them,

  195. encourage them,

  196. especially sometimes

  197. when it's so hard

  198. to get to church regularly

  199. because of responsibilities at work.

  200. Lord, give them times of rest,

  201. times in your word,

  202. times to pray

  203. and to know your presence

  204. and the joy of fellowship with you.

  205. Lord, we pray

  206. for the work of the gospel

  207. in our city

  208. and in our nation.

  209. Lord, we pray that rich and poor

  210. and old and young,

  211. people who have always called

  212. Scotland home,

  213. people who have moved

  214. from different parts of the world,

  215. that together

  216. we would discover

  217. the joy of knowing Jesus,

  218. that you would be at work

  219. through your words,

  220. you'd be at work

  221. through your people,

  222. Sunday by Sunday

  223. as churches gather,

  224. week by week

  225. as your people scatter,

  226. to be a blessing

  227. in our communities.

  228. Lord, be pleased

  229. to point many

  230. to hope in Jesus.

  231. And Lord, we pray

  232. for our world.

  233. We recognize

  234. there is so much darkness,

  235. there is so much sadness,

  236. there is so much warfare

  237. and strife.

  238. Lord, we pray

  239. for the ministry

  240. of the Prince of Peace.

  241. And we pray

  242. for a day

  243. when true peace

  244. would reign,

  245. peace of the Lord Jesus

  246. that passes understanding

  247. would be formed

  248. in people's hearts

  249. and lives.

  250. Lord, we recognize

  251. lasting hope

  252. and lasting change

  253. is found ultimately

  254. and only

  255. in the Lord Jesus.

  256. And we thank you

  257. for the promise

  258. in your word

  259. that there is a day coming

  260. when the Lord Jesus

  261. will return,

  262. when he will make

  263. this world new,

  264. when he will deal

  265. once and for all

  266. with all that is evil

  267. and unjust,

  268. when his people

  269. will live

  270. in a world

  271. made perfect forever,

  272. that we will enjoy

  273. perfectly restored

  274. bodies and minds,

  275. able to worship,

  276. able to truly love.

  277. Lord, give us

  278. a longing

  279. for that day

  280. to work,

  281. to see

  282. your kingdom come

  283. and your will be done

  284. on earth

  285. as it is in heaven.

  286. Hear our prayers

  287. we ask

  288. in Jesus' name.

  289. Amen.

  290. Now, before we turn back

  291. to Luke chapter 18,

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  292. we're going to sing

  293. another section

  294. of a psalm,

  295. this time from Psalm 19,

  296. a reflection on the beauty

  297. and the value

  298. of the word of God.

  299. Psalm 19 from 7 to 11,

  300. and we'll stand together

  301. to sing.

  302. The perfect love

  303. of God revives the soul

  304. of man.

  305. His statutes,

  306. which are sure,

  307. make wise the simple one.

  308. The precepts of the Lord

  309. are right,

  310. God's radiant command

  311. and shed light

  312. on what we see.

  313. The fear of God

  314. is pure

  315. and lasts eternally.

  316. The standards

  317. of the Lord

  318. express

  319. His perfect truth

  320. and righteousness.

  321. of far more worth

  322. than gold,

  323. than much pure gold

  324. they are,

  325. than honey

  326. from the comb,

  327. than honey

  328. sweeter far.

  329. they warn

  330. the servant

  331. of the Lord

  332. in keeping

  333. them

  334. His great

  335. reward.

  336. Now,

  337. if you have your Bibles,

  338. perhaps,

  339. you can have them open

  340. so we can consider

  341. these words together.

  342. Page 1052

  343. if you're using

  344. the church Bible.

  345. We're thinking today

  346. about how to gain

  347. or how to miss

  348. eternal life.

  349. As we begin,

  350. I wonder

  351. if you find yourself

  352. this week

  353. sparing a thought

  354. for the man

  355. called John Cheeks.

  356. If you are paying

  357. attention to some

  358. of the more obscure

  359. items of news

  360. this week,

  361. you might know

  362. that John Cheeks

  363. was the man

  364. who is suing

  365. the lottery

  366. in America.

  367. In January

  368. of 2023,

  369. the U.S.

  370. lottery was

  371. testing all its

  372. machines to make

  373. sure that they

  374. were functioning

  375. correctly.

  376. In error,

  377. it printed

  378. some lottery

  379. numbers online.

  380. Guess whose numbers

  381. came up?

  382. Mr. John Cheeks.

  383. On that day,

  384. he thought he had

  385. gained

  386. $340 million

  387. until

  388. the lottery

  389. recognized their error.

  390. He missed out

  391. on that jackpot.

  392. He's suing them

  393. for emotional distress.

  394. He wants to get

  395. his money.

  396. He thought it

  397. was his.

  398. Turned out

  399. he was wrong.

  400. The story of

  401. John Cheeks

  402. helps us

  403. into the story

  404. of some of the

  405. men we meet

  406. on the road

  407. with Jesus.

  408. There's an

  409. individual,

  410. a rich ruler,

  411. and there's a

  412. group of people

  413. who presume,

  414. they presume

  415. they have

  416. ultimate gain,

  417. a gain that

  418. makes winning

  419. the lottery

  420. seem like

  421. small change.

  422. They presumed

  423. they were

  424. in God's

  425. kingdom.

  426. Eternal life

  427. with God

  428. was theirs

  429. for sure,

  430. but it turns

  431. out they

  432. were in error.

  433. They thought

  434. they were

  435. measuring up

  436. perfectly to

  437. God's standards.

  438. Jesus is going

  439. to tell them

  440. they were wrong.

  441. They thought

  442. God's kingdom

  443. worked on the

  444. basis of merit,

  445. and they had

  446. merited a place

  447. at God's table.

  448. Again,

  449. Jesus is going

  450. to tell them

  451. they're wrong.

  452. Jesus provides

  453. a reality

  454. check

  455. to warn

  456. of this

  457. error.

  458. He tells

  459. a story

  460. where the

  461. hero of the

  462. story,

  463. the one who's

  464. in the

  465. kingdom,

  466. is the

  467. tax collector.

  468. And against

  469. those who are

  470. trying to earn

  471. their way into

  472. the kingdom,

  473. Jesus says

  474. the kingdom

  475. belongs to

  476. those who are

  477. like little

  478. children,

  479. those who bring

  480. nothing to the

  481. table,

  482. as it were,

  483. they are in.

  484. It can be a

  485. hard lesson to

  486. learn.

  487. Let's go back

  488. to our

  489. playground days.

  490. Some of us,

  491. they're still here.

  492. For some of us,

  493. we have to go a

  494. little bit further

  495. back.

  496. Remember how teams

  497. were picked in

  498. school, how teams

  499. probably have always

  500. been picked in

  501. school?

  502. You would have

  503. captains,

  504. and those captains,

  505. they would decide

  506. who got to choose

  507. first.

  508. And of course,

  509. when it comes to

  510. team selection,

  511. you choose

  512. whoever you think

  513. is the best.

  514. And maybe

  515. you also choose

  516. those who you're

  517. friends with.

  518. So gradually,

  519. it works its way

  520. down until

  521. there's just one

  522. or two people

  523. left at the end.

  524. Well, as we

  525. grow up,

  526. we probably

  527. realize the

  528. pattern doesn't

  529. always change

  530. so much.

  531. In our

  532. workplaces,

  533. typically,

  534. it's the skilled

  535. and the successful

  536. who get the

  537. special responsibilities,

  538. who get the

  539. promotions.

  540. In friendships,

  541. typically,

  542. it's the funny

  543. and the outgoing

  544. who get the

  545. party invites.

  546. So the problem

  547. comes if we

  548. apply that way

  549. of thinking

  550. to religion.

  551. God's kingdom

  552. must work like

  553. the rest of the

  554. world works.

  555. God will accept

  556. me because I

  557. am.

  558. Well,

  559. here is Jesus,

  560. and He's

  561. walking closer

  562. to the cross,

  563. the place where

  564. He will die,

  565. and He needs

  566. us to hear

  567. and to understand

  568. that the greatest

  569. of all gains,

  570. the gain of

  571. knowing God

  572. and having

  573. eternal life,

  574. doesn't come

  575. because we

  576. earn it.

  577. It comes by

  578. God's gift.

  579. It comes

  580. because of

  581. grace.

  582. So how does

  583. He help us

  584. to get there?

  585. Three questions

  586. that we can

  587. take from our

  588. text.

  589. The first

  590. question,

  591. ask the question,

  592. how do we

  593. measure?

  594. This is

  595. verses 9

  596. to 14.

  597. Look at

  598. verse 9,

  599. to some who

  600. are confident

  601. of their own

  602. righteousness

  603. and look down

  604. on everyone

  605. else,

  606. Jesus told

  607. this parable.

  608. Last Sunday,

  609. I was down

  610. in the borders,

  611. I was preaching

  612. down in

  613. Galashios,

  614. in the community

  615. center there,

  616. we shared

  617. space with a

  618. group called

  619. Rugby Tots.

  620. So little

  621. two,

  622. three,

  623. four year olds

  624. learning the

  625. basics of

  626. rugby,

  627. learning how

  628. to catch

  629. a ball,

  630. learning how

  631. to pass.

  632. Some of

  633. them,

  634. they were all

  635. very cute,

  636. some of

  637. them seemed

  638. quite decent,

  639. but not

  640. any of

  641. them were

  642. on the

  643. same level

  644. as the

  645. Six Nations

  646. team that

  647. played yesterday.

  648. The best

  649. rugby taught

  650. in the

  651. Scottish

  652. borders was

  653. not playing

  654. for the

  655. Scottish

  656. national team

  657. yesterday.

  658. But imagine

  659. the three year

  660. old in

  661. Galashios who

  662. was feeling

  663. particularly good

  664. about their

  665. ball handling

  666. skills,

  667. thinking,

  668. I'm the

  669. best rugby

  670. player ever.

  671. if they'd

  672. switched on

  673. the TV

  674. yesterday

  675. evening,

  676. if they'd

  677. watched

  678. Gregor Townsend's

  679. team play,

  680. they would

  681. have received

  682. an important

  683. reality check.

  684. How we

  685. measure

  686. matters.

  687. And so

  688. Jesus uses

  689. a parable

  690. to deliver

  691. a reality

  692. check to

  693. a man,

  694. to a group

  695. of men

  696. who are

  697. measuring

  698. themselves

  699. against other

  700. people.

  701. And they're

  702. feeling really

  703. good about

  704. themselves,

  705. and they're

  706. despising

  707. other people,

  708. and they're

  709. really confident

  710. of being

  711. in God's

  712. team.

  713. And so

  714. Jesus tells

  715. a parable.

  716. He paints

  717. a picture

  718. of two

  719. praying men.

  720. Two people

  721. come to

  722. the same

  723. place of

  724. worship.

  725. There's a

  726. number of

  727. different things

  728. that are the

  729. same,

  730. one or two

  731. that are

  732. very different,

  733. and key

  734. is how they

  735. measure.

  736. Listen to

  737. how Jesus

  738. describes

  739. the religious

  740. man.

  741. The Pharisee,

  742. he stood

  743. by himself.

  744. He is

  745. standing

  746. apart

  747. because of

  748. his pride.

  749. I don't

  750. want to be

  751. associated

  752. with these

  753. lesser

  754. mortals

  755. over here.

  756. We hear

  757. it in his

  758. words,

  759. God,

  760. I thank

  761. you

  762. that I'm

  763. not like

  764. other people.

  765. I am

  766. so thankful

  767. that I'm

  768. in a

  769. different

  770. moral

  771. category.

  772. So,

  773. interesting,

  774. he's clearly

  775. very sincere

  776. and religious.

  777. I fast

  778. twice a

  779. week,

  780. I give

  781. a tenth

  782. of all

  783. I get,

  784. but his

  785. heart is

  786. not right

  787. before

  788. God.

  789. But then,

  790. Jesus introduces

  791. the rebellious

  792. man,

  793. the tax

  794. collector

  795. who robs

  796. his own

  797. people,

  798. who works

  799. with the

  800. enemy,

  801. the tax

  802. collector

  803. two.

  804. He stood

  805. at a

  806. distance.

  807. He stands

  808. apart,

  809. but he

  810. stands

  811. apart

  812. because he

  813. feels and

  814. he knows

  815. he's

  816. unworthy.

  817. He would

  818. not even

  819. look up to

  820. heaven.

  821. Standard

  822. way to

  823. pray.

  824. He doesn't

  825. feel he

  826. deserves it.

  827. He beats

  828. his breast

  829. as a sign

  830. of deep

  831. grief and

  832. repentance,

  833. because of

  834. his sin.

  835. And how

  836. does he

  837. pray?

  838. He

  839. prays,

  840. God,

  841. have

  842. mercy on

  843. me,

  844. a sinner.

  845. Literally,

  846. God,

  847. be propitiated

  848. to me,

  849. a sinner.

  850. God,

  851. turn your

  852. anger

  853. away from

  854. me.

  855. I know

  856. I am a

  857. sinner.

  858. I know

  859. I deserve

  860. your anger,

  861. but please

  862. have mercy.

  863. Turn the

  864. anger

  865. away

  866. from

  867. me.

  868. As

  869. Jesus

  870. tells

  871. the story,

  872. he's

  873. reminding

  874. us of

  875. why he

  876. is going

  877. to the

  878. cross.

  879. Jesus

  880. is going

  881. to the

  882. cross to

  883. be a

  884. substitute

  885. so the

  886. anger of

  887. God against

  888. our sin

  889. might not

  890. fall on

  891. us,

  892. but it

  893. might fall

  894. on

  895. Jesus.

  896. Now,

  897. we get to

  898. the sting

  899. in the

  900. tail,

  901. don't

  902. we?

  903. This

  904. would be

  905. a total

  906. shock to

  907. Jesus'

  908. original

  909. hearers.

  910. We

  911. already know,

  912. we've

  913. decided,

  914. we've

  915. heard the

  916. gospels

  917. probably,

  918. so we

  919. know who

  920. the good

  921. guys and

  922. the bad

  923. guys are,

  924. but in

  925. Jesus'

  926. day,

  927. the Pharisees

  928. are the

  929. elite.

  930. These are

  931. God's

  932. men.

  933. Jesus

  934. says,

  935. I tell

  936. you,

  937. this

  938. man,

  939. rather

  940. than the

  941. other,

  942. went home

  943. justified

  944. before

  945. God.

  946. Who

  947. is the

  948. one who

  949. is declared

  950. to be

  951. in right

  952. standing

  953. with God?

  954. Who

  955. is the

  956. one who

  957. is in

  958. the

  959. kingdom,

  960. who

  961. is on

  962. his

  963. way

  964. to

  965. enjoy

  966. eternal

  967. life?

  968. It's

  969. the bad

  970. guy.

  971. God

  972. because he

  973. shows true

  974. humility.

  975. He confesses

  976. his sin.

  977. He knows

  978. he needs

  979. mercy and

  980. he seeks

  981. mercy from

  982. God.

  983. That would

  984. have shocked

  985. the crowd

  986. in Jesus'

  987. day.

  988. And

  989. actually,

  990. this teaching

  991. still shocks

  992. people today.

  993. sin.

  994. I don't

  995. know if

  996. you've

  997. ever

  998. had

  999. those

  1000. conversations

  1001. where you

  1002. understand

  1003. that this

  1004. sinner's

  1005. prayer can

  1006. still cause

  1007. a great

  1008. scandal

  1009. and offence.

  1010. As people

  1011. understand

  1012. that Jesus

  1013. has come

  1014. to save

  1015. anyone,

  1016. anyone who

  1017. confesses sin

  1018. and trusts in

  1019. Jesus will

  1020. be saved.

  1021. Maybe I've

  1022. conversed,

  1023. you mean the

  1024. very worst

  1025. of criminals?

  1026. They could be

  1027. saved if they

  1028. trusted in

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. You mean a

  1031. horrible tyrant

  1032. and dictator

  1033. could be

  1034. saved even

  1035. if as they

  1036. were dying

  1037. they turned

  1038. to put their

  1039. trust in

  1040. Jesus?

  1041. And the

  1042. answer is

  1043. yes.

  1044. God is

  1045. gracious.

  1046. Jesus'

  1047. grace is

  1048. wonderful and

  1049. shocking.

  1050. Jesus explains

  1051. why the

  1052. tax collector

  1053. was justified.

  1054. It's this

  1055. principle of

  1056. reversal that

  1057. Jesus keeps

  1058. introducing

  1059. end of

  1060. verse 14.

  1061. All those

  1062. who exalt

  1063. themselves

  1064. will be

  1065. humbled

  1066. and those

  1067. who humble

  1068. themselves

  1069. will be

  1070. exalted.

  1071. What goes

  1072. up must

  1073. first go

  1074. down.

  1075. Unlike the

  1076. Pharisee who

  1077. compared himself

  1078. with others,

  1079. compared himself

  1080. with the bad

  1081. guys to feel

  1082. good about

  1083. himself and

  1084. to look down

  1085. on them,

  1086. the tax

  1087. collector is

  1088. justified because

  1089. he knows how

  1090. to measure.

  1091. He has

  1092. measured himself

  1093. against God's

  1094. perfect standard

  1095. and when we do

  1096. that we see

  1097. that we need

  1098. mercy.

  1099. That's what

  1100. Jesus wants

  1101. to expose

  1102. in verse 9,

  1103. a spirit of

  1104. self-righteousness,

  1105. a mindset that

  1106. thinks I can

  1107. win or I have

  1108. won God's

  1109. favor by my

  1110. actions.

  1111. And so this

  1112. story reminds us

1113. we need to be so

  1114. careful with the

  1115. measures that we

  1116. use, the

  1117. measure that we

  1118. use towards

  1119. God to

  1120. recognize that

  1121. God is

  1122. perfectly

  1123. holy.

  1124. He cannot

  1125. bear to

  1126. look on

  1127. sin, he

  1128. can have

  1129. nothing to

  1130. do with

  1131. sin.

  1132. We also

  1133. need to

  1134. understand that

  1135. his requirement

  1136. is perfect

  1137. obedience.

  1138. Unlike when

  1139. we sit an

  1140. exam, it's

  1141. not enough

  1142. just to

  1143. scrape a

  1144. pass.

  1145. You know,

  1146. 70% is a

  1147. good grade,

  1148. but not when

  1149. it comes to

  1150. obedience towards

  1151. God.

  1152. 100% love

  1153. and obedience

  1154. is the

  1155. requirement that

  1156. he sets, and

  1157. so we need to

  1158. know that

  1159. measure.

  1160. The parable

  1161. also tells us

  1162. we need to be

  1163. careful about

  1164. how we apply

  1165. measures towards

  1166. others.

  1167. First of all,

  1168. to understand

  1169. that we are

  1170. truly known

  1171. by God.

  1172. He is the

  1173. one who sees

  1174. our hearts,

  1175. our minds.

  1176. That should

  1177. humble us

  1178. before we're so

  1179. quick to judge

  1180. others, but

  1181. also to understand

  1182. we don't ever

  1183. truly know

  1184. others.

  1185. So we need to

  1186. be super careful

  1187. against pride

  1188. in a critical

  1189. spirit that can

  1190. so easily come

  1191. out.

  1192. And we also

  1193. need to be

  1194. careful with the

  1195. measure we apply

  1196. towards ourselves.

  1197. Sometimes it's

  1198. so important for

  1199. us to consider

  1200. what God's law

  1201. actually teaches,

  1202. because we know,

  1203. I think,

  1204. whenever we

  1205. measure by

  1206. the Ten

  1207. Commandments,

  1208. or we measure

  1209. ourselves up

  1210. against God's

  1211. command to

  1212. love Him

  1213. with all our

  1214. heart, soul,

  1215. mind, and

  1216. strength,

  1217. to love our

  1218. neighbor as

  1219. ourselves.

  1220. We've not

  1221. reached that

  1222. standard.

  1223. We cannot

  1224. reach that

  1225. standard.

  1226. So that

  1227. basing our

  1228. hope on

  1229. my righteousness,

  1230. pinning my

  1231. eternal future

  1232. on, well,

  1233. I think I'm

  1234. doing better

  1235. than others,

  1236. that mentality

  1237. is to miss

  1238. eternal life,

  1239. because what we

  1240. need is the

  1241. gospel.

  1242. Who we need

  1243. is Jesus.

  1244. Jesus is the

  1245. only one who

  1246. is perfectly

  1247. measured up.

  1248. If you want to

  1249. see what perfect

  1250. obedience looks

  1251. like, you see it

  1252. in Jesus.

  1253. What does perfect

  1254. love for God and

  1255. neighbor looks like?

  1256. We see it in

  1257. Jesus, and we see

  1258. it in the cross.

  1259. As we said,

  1260. Jesus will die

  1261. on the cross as

  1262. God's answer to

  1263. the human problem

  1264. of sin, to turn

  1265. away God's anger

  1266. against our sin,

  1267. and it's only as

  1268. we come to Him

  1269. that we can be

  1270. justified, that we

  1271. can find mercy, that

  1272. we can enjoy

  1273. eternal life.

  1274. So there's the

  1275. question of how we

  1276. measure.

  1277. Do we measure

  1278. against God's

  1279. standard?

  1280. Do we measure

  1281. against our own

  1282. standard?

  1283. There's another

  1284. question to ask

  1285. ourselves, how do

  1286. we come?

1287. Do we come on the

  1288. basis of grace, or

1289. do we come on the

  1290. basis of merit?

  1291. Again, I'm sure

  1292. many of us have

  1293. been following the

  1294. postmaster scandal

  1295. in the news since

  1296. the turn of the

  1297. year, an example

  1298. of perhaps the

  1299. greatest miscarriage

  1300. of justice in the

  1301. UK legal system.

  1302. There's a Christian

  1303. apologist by the

  1304. name of Glenn

  1305. Scrivener.

  1306. He's written a

  1307. really insightful

  1308. essay, and one of

  1309. the key problems

  1310. that he identified

  1311. that the justice

  1312. system is now

  1313. beginning to

  1314. identify is the

  1315. problem of

  1316. pretending there

  1317. are no errors.

  1318. You know, the

  1319. whole refusal of

  1320. companies and

  1321. governments to

  1322. acknowledge that

  1323. there could possibly

  1324. be any system

  1325. errors led to

  1326. tens of thousands

  1327. being unfairly

  1328. victimized and

  1329. prosecuted.

  1330. That same error,

  1331. the error of

  1332. pretending there

  1333. are no errors,

  1334. that lies at the

  1335. heart of the

  1336. human condition.

  1337. we have that

  1338. inbuilt ability to

  1339. persuade ourselves

  1340. that we are

  1341. right.

  1342. We have a

  1343. pretended goodness.

  1344. We manage to

  1345. whitewash over, you

  1346. know, the

  1347. deadliness of our

  1348. sin.

  1349. Just like Adam and

  1350. Eve in the garden,

1351. even as they sin and

  1352. they shame, they fall

  1353. into shame because they

  1354. turn their back on

  1355. God.

1356. We too try and cover

  1357. our sin with

  1358. pretended goodness,

  1359. just like those fig

  1360. leaves that Adam and

  1361. Eve used.

  1362. It just doesn't

  1363. cut it.

  1364. We come in verse

  1365. 18 to a man,

  1366. again, who is

  1367. confident that he

  1368. can, by his own

  1369. efforts, get eternal

  1370. life.

  1371. How do we know

  1372. that?

  1373. Because he says,

  1374. good teacher, what

  1375. must I do to

  1376. inherit eternal

  1377. life?

  1378. It's already a

  1379. flaw.

  1380. It's good to

  1381. desire eternal

  1382. life.

  1383. It's folly to try

  1384. and get there on

  1385. our own strength and

  1386. merit.

  1387. And what Jesus

  1388. does as he talks

1389. to this man is he

  1390. introduces some

  1391. systems tests.

  1392. He wants the

  1393. man to see the

  1394. error of this way

  1395. of thinking, to

  1396. throw up those

  1397. errors so that he

  1398. and we might throw

  1399. ourselves on the

  1400. mercy of God.

  1401. The first test he

  1402. introduces is the

  1403. test of goodness.

  1404. Jesus asks him in

  1405. verse 19, why do

  1406. you call me good?

  1407. No one is good

  1408. except God alone.

  1409. The main point

  1410. Jesus is wanting

  1411. to address here is,

  1412. does the man

  1413. understand that

  1414. God is the

  1415. standard of

  1416. absolute goodness

  1417. goodness and

  1418. that compared to

  1419. that absolute

  1420. standard of

  1421. goodness, none

  1422. of us can

  1423. possibly say we

  1424. are good.

  1425. Can he, can we

  1426. possibly hope to

  1427. compare with the

  1428. perfection of

  1429. God?

  1430. He doesn't seem

  1431. to have reflected

  1432. very deeply on

  1433. that because when

  1434. the second test is

  1435. introduced, the

  1436. test of love for

  1437. neighbor, Jesus

  1438. says you know the

  1439. commandments and

  1440. there's commandments

  1441. about neighbor

  1442. love, you shall

  1443. not commit

  1444. adultery, you

  1445. shall not murder,

  1446. you shall not

  1447. steal, you

  1448. shall not give

  1449. false testimony

  1450. on your father

  1451. and mother.

  1452. He effectively

  1453. says, yep,

  1454. tick that box,

  1455. all of these I've

  1456. kept since I was

  1457. a boy.

  1458. Really?

  1459. No anger,

  1460. no lust,

  1461. no cheek towards

  1462. your parents,

  1463. no impatience,

  1464. no pride,

  1465. ever.

  1466. This man has

  1467. failed to understand

  1468. that the law is

  1469. to function as

  1470. a mirror that

  1471. reveals to us

  1472. our imperfections.

  1473. As we spend

  1474. time in front of

  1475. the perfect law

  1476. of God, it

  1477. should show us

  1478. that God is

  1479. perfect and we

  1480. are not.

  1481. This man, he

  1482. likes what he

  1483. sees as he looks

  1484. in the mirror.

  1485. Why is that?

  1486. Because he only

  1487. ever really glances

  1488. at God.

  1489. He's so busy

  1490. gazing at

  1491. himself.

  1492. He needs

  1493. Romans 3.

  1494. We need

  1495. Romans 3.

  1496. Verse 20,

  1497. therefore,

  1498. no one will be

  1499. declared righteous

  1500. in God's sight

  1501. by the works

  1502. of the law.

  1503. Rather,

  1504. through the law,

  1505. we become

  1506. conscious of

  1507. our sin.

  1508. Or Romans 3,

  1509. 23,

  1510. for all have

  1511. sinned and

  1512. fall short

  1513. of the glory

  1514. of God.

  1515. He needs

  1516. the Heidelberg

  1517. Catechism.

  1518. And by that,

  1519. we're called

  1520. to love God

  1521. and love our

  1522. neighbor,

  1523. but we confess

  1524. that we are

  1525. prone to hate

  1526. in the way

  1527. that we live.

  1528. By now,

  1529. he should have

  1530. been running

  1531. to Jesus

  1532. for mercy

  1533. and grace.

  1534. The third

  1535. test that

  1536. Jesus introduces,

  1537. having introduced

  1538. the test of

  1539. goodness and

  1540. love for

  1541. neighbor,

  1542. is the test

  1543. of love

  1544. for God.

  1545. Verse 22,

  1546. when Jesus

  1547. heard this,

  1548. he said to

  1549. him,

  1550. you still

  1551. lack one

  1552. thing.

  1553. Sell everything

  1554. you have

  1555. and give

  1556. to the poor

  1557. and you'll

  1558. have treasure

  1559. in heaven.

  1560. Then come

  1561. follow me.

  1562. And it

  1563. becomes clear

  1564. that the man

  1565. hasn't kept

  1566. these commands.

  1567. He loves

  1568. money ahead

  1569. of God.

  1570. He is guilty

  1571. of coveting.

  1572. Money has

  1573. become an

  1574. idol to him.

  1575. And in

  1576. verse 23,

  1577. when he heard

  1578. this,

  1579. he became

  1580. very sad.

  1581. Now he's

  1582. reading the

  1583. error report.

  1584. Now he

  1585. sees the

  1586. problem,

  1587. the idol,

  1588. in his

  1589. heart.

  1590. But,

  1591. having asked,

  1592. how do I

  1593. inherit eternal

  1594. life?

  1595. Jesus says,

  1596. do that,

  1597. give it up,

  1598. to have me,

  1599. to have treasure

  1600. in heaven.

  1601. He won't.

  1602. He doesn't

  1603. see Jesus as a

  1604. treasure worth

  1605. sacrificing for.

  1606. And so he

  1607. is left sad.

  1608. Why is he

  1609. sad?

  1610. He's sad

  1611. because his

  1612. heart is

  1613. divided.

  1614. He kind of

  1615. wants to be

  1616. religious,

  1617. but he

  1618. really wants

  1619. to love his

  1620. money.

  1621. A divided

  1622. heart is

  1623. always going

  1624. to be a

  1625. sad heart.

  1626. If Jesus

  1627. is not

  1628. our goal,

  1629. if he is

  1630. not our

  1631. controlling

  1632. center,

  1633. as

  1634. Christians,

  1635. we will

  1636. have

  1637. sadness.

  1638. A

  1639. half-hearted

  1640. faith is

  1641. a sad

  1642. faith.

  1643. We need

  1644. total

  1645. commitment

  1646. to our

  1647. wonderful

  1648. Savior.

  1649. Then Jesus

  1650. goes on

  1651. to use

  1652. that

  1653. ridiculous

  1654. picture to

  1655. make a

  1656. serious

  1657. point.

  1658. He says

  1659. in verse

  1660. 24,

  1661. how hard

  1662. it is for

  1663. the rich

  1664. to enter

  1665. the kingdom

  1666. of God

  1667. and indeed

  1668. it is

  1669. easier

  1670. for a

  1671. camel

  1672. to go

  1673. through

  1674. the eye

  1675. of a

  1676. needle

  1677. than for

  1678. someone

  1679. who is

  1680. rich

  1681. to enter

  1682. the kingdom

  1683. of God.

  1684. So easy

  1685. to depend

  1686. on our

  1687. money,

  1688. so easy

  1689. to live

  1690. for our

  1691. money and

  1692. the things

  1693. that money

  1694. buys.

  1695. Well,

  1696. the crowd

  1697. are stunned

  1698. because remember

  1699. in their way

  1700. of thinking,

  1701. if you want

  1702. to know

  1703. who God

  1704. favors,

  1705. who God

  1706. is showing

  1707. His kindness

  1708. to,

  1709. it is to

  1710. the rich

  1711. people.

  1712. I thought

  1713. they had

  1714. God's

  1715. approval,

  1716. but now

  1717. Jesus is

  1718. saying

  1719. that's not

  1720. how it

  1721. works.

  1722. So if it's

  1723. not about

  1724. earning it,

  1725. if it's not

  1726. about religious

  1727. and moral

  1728. effort,

  1729. how does

  1730. anyone gain

  1731. eternal life?

  1732. They asked

  1733. the question,

  1734. verse 26,

  1735. who then

  1736. can be saved?

  1737. Jesus replied,

  1738. what is

  1739. impossible with

  1740. man is

  1741. possible with

  1742. God.

  1743. Do we hear it?

  1744. It is

  1745. impossible

  1746. by ourselves

  1747. to enter

  1748. into eternal

  1749. life.

  1750. It is

  1751. impossible

  1752. for us

  1753. to be

  1754. good enough

  1755. for God,

  1756. but what's

  1757. impossible

  1758. for us

  1759. is possible

  1760. for God.

  1761. And it's

  1762. possible

  1763. because God

  1764. has sent

  1765. His Son

  1766. Jesus,

  1767. and Jesus

  1768. has come

  1769. to make

  1770. the impossible

  1771. possible,

  1772. because Jesus

  1773. has come

  1774. as our

  1775. representative

  1776. and our

  1777. substitute,

  1778. and where

  1779. we have

  1780. disobeyed

  1781. the law,

  1782. He has

  1783. perfectly

  1784. obeyed

  1785. at all

  1786. points.

  1787. Where we

  1788. have failed

  1789. to love

  1790. God and

  1791. neighbor,

  1792. He has

  1793. perfectly

  1794. loved His

  1795. Father and

  1796. loved His

  1797. neighbor,

  1798. and He

  1799. showed us

  1800. that by

  1801. giving His

  1802. life to

  1803. make enemies

  1804. into friends.

  1805. He gave

  1806. His life as

  1807. the perfect

  1808. sacrifice to

  1809. make atonement

  1810. for our sin

  1811. and our guilt,

  1812. and His

  1813. perfect record

  1814. of perfect

  1815. righteousness

  1816. is credited

  1817. to His

  1818. people,

  1819. so that we

  1820. are saved

  1821. by grace

  1822. through faith

  1823. in Jesus.

  1824. So let's

  1825. ask our

  1826. big question,

  1827. how do we

  1828. gain or

  1829. how do we

  1830. miss

  1831. eternal life?

  1832. So far,

  1833. these two

  1834. groups,

  1835. they've

  1836. experienced a

  1837. huge shock.

  1838. They were

  1839. so confident

  1840. that God

  1841. had approved

  1842. of them,

  1843. but now

  1844. they're

  1845. discovering

  1846. from Jesus'

  1847. words that

  1848. no one is

  1849. good enough,

  1850. no one

  1851. merits life

  1852. with God.

  1853. And in

  1854. that,

  1855. there's been

  1856. a call

  1857. to honesty,

  1858. to honestly

  1859. consider,

  1860. can we

  1861. really and

  1862. truly be

  1863. good and

  1864. loving enough

  1865. for God?

  1866. Do we

  1867. think we

  1868. can meet

  1869. His

  1870. standards?

  1871. And with

  1872. that,

  1873. there comes

  1874. that need

  1875. for humility

  1876. instead of

  1877. coming with

  1878. those lists

  1879. of credentials.

  1880. Here's why

  1881. you should

  1882. accept me,

  1883. Jesus,

  1884. because of

  1885. all these

  1886. things that

  1887. I've done.

  1888. We come

  1889. like the

  1890. tax collector

  1891. and we

  1892. plead for

  1893. mercy.

  1894. But still

  1895. wonderfully,

  1896. we also need

  1897. to recognize

  1898. that hope

  1899. is offered.

  1900. It's true

  1901. for us,

  1902. if we listen

  1903. and learn,

  1904. there is

  1905. hope for us.

  1906. Last month,

  1907. rather,

  1908. we were learning

  1909. the new hymn,

  1910. Come unto Jesus.

  1911. The chorus

  1912. is wonderful.

  1913. Come unto

  1914. Jesus,

  1915. lay down

  1916. your burdens,

  1917. because He

  1918. is enough.

  1919. One of the

  1920. burdens that we

  1921. carry is the

  1922. burden of

  1923. trying to

  1924. earn our

  1925. approval.

  1926. Even as

  1927. Christians,

  1928. sometimes we

  1929. get it wrong

  1930. and we

  1931. think we

  1932. need to

  1933. earn God's

  1934. favor rather

  1935. than knowing

  1936. that He

  1937. loves us

  1938. perfectly in

  1939. Jesus.

  1940. We're

  1941. invited to

  1942. come unto

  1943. Jesus and

  1944. rest in

  1945. His love.

  1946. And to

  1947. help us to

  1948. understand this,

  1949. in between

  1950. this group who

  1951. are self-righteous

  1952. and they're

  1953. looking down on

  1954. others,

  1955. in between

  1956. them and

  1957. the rich

  1958. young man

  1959. who thought

  1960. He could

  1961. merit eternal

  1962. life,

  1963. there's another

  1964. group,

  1965. isn't there?

  1966. Who does

  1967. Jesus meet

  1968. in between?

  1969. He meets the

  1970. babies and

  1971. the little

  1972. children.

  1973. And this

  1974. little encounter

  1975. shows us

  1976. here's the

  1977. way to

  1978. gain eternal

  1979. life.

  1980. It also

  1981. tells us

  1982. some of the

  1983. struggles that

  1984. we have to

  1985. accept it.

  1986. So there's

  1987. the disciples,

  1988. verse 15.

  1989. People are

  1990. bringing babies

  1991. to Jesus for

  1992. Him to place

  1993. His hands

  1994. on them.

  1995. When the

  1996. disciples saw

  1997. this,

  1998. they rebuked

  1999. Him.

  2000. Jesus is

  2001. far too

  2002. busy doing

  2003. real ministry.

  2004. Babies,

  2005. children,

  2006. they're just

  2007. going to be

  2008. a distraction.

  2009. They're not

  2010. important.

  2011. Disciples are

  2012. struggling to

  2013. see that

  2014. Jesus'

  2015. kingdom works

  2016. on the

  2017. basis of

  2018. grace.

  2019. It's not

  2020. about who

  2021. earns it,

  2022. who deserves

  2023. it,

  2024. who's the

  2025. most significant

  2026. in society.

  2027. I think even

  2028. as Christians,

  2029. we can struggle

  2030. and fall

  2031. into the

  2032. trap.

  2033. I feel

  2034. that God

  2035. loves me

  2036. more this

  2037. week because

  2038. I've been

  2039. faithful and

  2040. obedient this

  2041. week.

  2042. I feel

  2043. that I'm

  2044. better than

  2045. others because

  2046. I'm being

  2047. obedient this

  2048. week.

  2049. Jesus is

  2050. so different.

  2051. What does

  2052. Jesus do?

  2053. The disciples

  2054. rebuke the

  2055. parents, but

  2056. Jesus called

  2057. the children

  2058. to Him and

  2059. said,

  2060. let the

  2061. little children

  2062. come to

  2063. Me.

  2064. Do not

  2065. hinder them,

  2066. for the

  2067. kingdom of

  2068. God belongs

  2069. to such as

  2070. these.

  2071. He called

  2072. them, He

  2073. invites them,

  2074. and they

  2075. come.

  2076. Why do they

  2077. become a

  2078. picture of

  2079. those who

  2080. gain eternal

  2081. life?

  2082. Because it

  2083. reminds us

  2084. how we are

  2085. to come.

  2086. We're to

  2087. come with

  2088. a childlike

  2089. trust.

  2090. We're to

  2091. come with

  2092. dependence.

  2093. We're to

  2094. come in

  2095. response to

  2096. the free

  2097. invitation to

  2098. life that

  2099. comes from

  2100. Jesus.

  2101. Not asking

  2102. what we need

  2103. to do, not

  2104. asking what

  2105. we need

  2106. to pay to

  2107. come like

  2108. children, to

  2109. hear the

  2110. Savior's call

  2111. and to run

  2112. to Him for

  2113. grace.

  2114. So, Jesus

  2115. is saying to

  2116. us today,

  2117. don't miss

  2118. eternal life.

  2119. Don't miss the

  2120. greatest gain of

  2121. all by measuring

  2122. against others and

  2123. saying, well, I'm

  2124. better than others

  2125. rather than

  2126. measuring against

  2127. God.

  2128. Don't miss out

  2129. either by measuring

  2130. against others and

  2131. saying, I'm no

  2132. good, so God

  2133. wouldn't want

  2134. me, because

  2135. that also is

  2136. to limit God's

  2137. grace and

  2138. God's mercy.

  2139. Rather, we're

  2140. invited to trust

  2141. Jesus, the good

  2142. and gracious

  2143. Savior and

  2144. King, and to

  2145. come to Him.

  2146. Remember Jesus

  2147. said, those who

  2148. exalt themselves

  2149. will be humbled

  2150. and those who

  2151. humble themselves

  2152. will be exalted.

  2153. Jesus has humbled

  2154. Himself, hasn't

  2155. He?

  2156. The eternal

  2157. Son of God has

  2158. left the glory of

  2159. heaven to become

  2160. one of us.

  2161. He humbled

  2162. Himself by living

  2163. a life marked by

  2164. suffering and

  2165. rejection and

  2166. shame.

  2167. He humbles

  2168. Himself by being

  2169. ready to walk

  2170. the road to

  2171. Jerusalem to

  2172. die on the

  2173. cross, to

  2174. take our sin, to

  2175. take our shame, to

  2176. pay the price in

  2177. full.

  2178. Faith in this

  2179. Jesus brings us

  2180. God's mercy.

  2181. faith in Jesus

  2182. secures the

  2183. forgiveness of

  2184. our sins.

  2185. Faith in Jesus

  2186. means we enter

  2187. life with Him

  2188. now.

  2189. With the promise

  2190. and reality that

  2191. united to Jesus,

  2192. humbly coming to

  2193. Him in faith, we

  2194. will be exalted.

  2195. We will have the

  2196. joy of eternal

  2197. life now, knowing

  2198. life with Jesus.

  2199. us and the

  2200. promise of

  2201. eternal life with

  2202. Him when He

  2203. returns, when He

  2204. makes everything

  2205. new, when He

  2206. takes His people

  2207. to be with Him.

  2208. If we've heard

  2209. His invitation and

  2210. His call to

  2211. grace, then we

  2212. will be exalted

  2213. and enjoy

  2214. eternity with

  2215. Him.

  2216. let's not miss

  2217. eternal life by

  2218. trying to make

  2219. it our own

  2220. way.

  2221. Let's seek Him

  2222. for grace, to

  2223. gain it, to

  2224. enjoy it.

  2225. Let's pray

  2226. together.

  2227. Lord, our

  2228. God, we

  2229. thank You.
