  1. This morning's reading comes from Ecclesiastes chapter 12.

    Ecclesiastes 12 chapter mention

  2. Starting in verse 8, we read,

  3. Vanity of vanities, says the preacher, all is vanity.

  4. Besides being wise, the preacher also taught the people knowledge,

  5. weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care.

  6. The preacher sought to find words of delight,

  7. and uprightly he wrote words of truth.

  8. The words of the wise are like goads,

  9. and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings.

  10. They are given by one shepherd.

  11. My son, beware of anything beyond these,

  12. of making many books there is no end,

  13. and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

  14. The end of the matter all has been heard.

  15. Fear God and keep his commandments,

  16. for this is the whole duty of man,

  17. for God will bring every deed into judgment,

  18. with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

  19. This is the word of God.

  20. Great, thank you, Celeste.

  21. Let's pray together briefly as, before we look at this word.

  22. Heavenly Father, once again, as we come to your word,

  23. we do come with humility.

  24. We come, God, not to sit over your word in judgment,

  25. thinking that we have the final say.

  26. We acknowledge that you are God and we are not.

  27. Lord, we come to your word because we want to encounter you,

  28. the living God.

  29. We want to hear you speaking to us,

  30. to both challenge us and to comfort us,

  31. to draw us near to yourself.

  32. God, this morning we pray that you help us

  33. to understand your word,

  34. and to hear you speaking to us,

  35. and help us to respond appropriately.

  36. God, help us to love you more,

  37. and to trust you more,

  38. and to obey you,

  39. because you have spoken to us today.

  40. And so we pray these things in your awesome

  41. and your majestic name.

  42. Amen.

  43. Now, in order to understand our passage today,

  44. we need to just be reminded of the structure

  45. of the book of Ecclesiastes.

  46. If you're new, let me explain it to us again.

  47. Ecclesiastes kind of has two authors,

  48. or two voices that are speaking.

  49. The majority of Ecclesiastes,

  50. almost everything actually,

  51. from halfway to chapter one,

  52. or the second verse of chapter one,

  53. right up to almost the end of chapter 12,

  54. is the voice of this skeptic,

  55. who the author calls the teacher.

  56. In Hebrew, his name is Koheleth.

  57. And Koheleth, or the teacher,

  58. he is not the author,

  59. but the author is using his words

  60. to make a point.

  61. And what is his point?

  62. Well, the author,

  63. who employs the words of this teacher,

  64. the author's main point is this,

  65. life is not meaningless.

  66. The author has used the hopelessness

  67. of Koheleth's worldview

  68. to provoke us

  69. and to think about life beyond

  70. just life in the sun.

  71. The teacher, Koheleth,

  72. he looks around him,

  73. he's not very aware of God,

  74. he knows there is a God out there,

  75. but this God doesn't seem

  76. to break into his life.

  77. And he looks around

  78. and he just thinks life is meaningless.

  79. And the author's kind of

  80. using this teacher,

  81. this Koheleth,

  82. to provoke us

  83. and to think about the meaning of life.

  84. It's kind of like

  85. when I was a teenager,

  86. I loved listening to music,

  87. U2,

  88. and Dave Matthews' band,

  89. and these other bands.

  90. And one of my favorite things to do

  91. was to try and work out

  92. or listen to or research

  93. the story behind the lyrics to the songs.

  94. So you hear a great song,

  95. you think,

  96. oh, that's a nice song,

  97. and then you go and find out

  98. what prompted the writer to write that.

  99. And you hear the reason behind

  100. the actual author's intentions,

  101. and suddenly it makes the song come alive.

  102. It's kind of like maybe

  103. another analogy might be

  104. you read Macbeth,

  105. some Shakespeare,

  106. and you find out what's going on.

  107. And then at the end,

  108. you hear Shakespeare actually stepping in

  109. saying, okay,

  110. this is what I want you to take from it.

  111. Or maybe you read

  112. The Lord of the Rings,

  113. and you think,

  114. I don't know what's going on.

  115. And then you listen to an interview

  116. by J.R. Tolkien.

  117. So you say,

  118. ah, okay, I understand.

  119. Well, the author of Ecclesiastes

  120. has been employing the words

  121. of this teacher, Koheleth,

  122. to provoke us.

  123. And the teacher's been saying,

  124. meaningless, meaningless,

  125. everything's meaningless.

  126. And the author's saying,

  127. is that really the case?

  128. Is that really the case?

  129. And so in chapter 12,

  130. today we sit down with the author,

  131. and we get to hear him speak

  132. and tell us his intentions

  133. for writing the book of Ecclesiastes.

  134. Okay, does that make sense?

  135. You following?

  136. And he does this in two ways.

  137. In verses 9 to 11,

  138. he summarizes the work of the teacher.

  139. And then in verses 12 to 14,

  140. he gives his own conclusion.

  141. Okay?

  142. And so let's dive in

  143. and see what happens.

  144. And so the last six weeks,

  145. we've been following this teacher,

  146. Koheleth, on his quest.

  147. And he's been searching for meaning

  148. and purpose,

  149. wisdom and knowledge,

  150. justice and truth.

  151. And look at how the author

  152. sums up the work of the teacher,

  153. verses 9 and 10.

  154. He says,

  155. Besides being wise,

  156. the teacher also taught

  157. the people knowledge,

  158. weighing and studying

  159. and arranging many proverbs

  160. with great care.

  161. The teacher sought to find

  162. words of delight

  163. and to honestly write

  164. words of truth.

  165. So he's saying,

  166. the teacher's like a collector

  167. of fine sayings.

  168. He's traveled around,

  169. he's asked many people,

  170. and he's collected

  171. these words of wisdom,

  172. and he's arranging them

  173. and putting them in order,

  174. and he's trying to come up

  175. with the summary

  176. of his explanation

  177. of the meaning

  178. and the purpose of life.

  179. Ecclesiastes is his summary

  180. of his work.

  181. But has this worked?

  182. Has the teacher's approach

  183. really got him anywhere?

  184. I mean, he's been on this quest

  185. and this journey,

  186. and what is his conclusion?

  187. Where has he arrived?

  188. Has it actually helped him?

  189. Maybe another way

  190. of asking that is,

  191. should we follow the teacher

  192. and go about things

  193. the way he has?

  194. Should we go and read

  195. all the sacred texts

  196. and interview thousands

  197. of people

  198. and collect all our summary

  199. of wisdom

  200. and come up

  201. with our own answer?

  202. And if so,

  203. will we find the answer

  204. to the questions

  205. that we ask in our heart?

  206. Well, the author answers

  207. yes and no,

  208. both positively

  209. and negatively.

  210. Look at what he says

  211. in verse 11.

  212. First he says,

  213. yes,

  214. the teacher

  215. has some wisdom.

  216. Look at verse 11.

  217. The words of the wise

  218. are like goads,

  219. like nails firmly fixed

  220. are the collected sayings.

  221. They are given

  222. by one shepherd.

  223. So the author tells us here

  224. that these wise sayings,

  225. the kind of things

  226. that the teacher's been

  227. on his journey

  228. to go and collect

  229. and find

  230. and navigate

  231. and arrange

  232. and study

  233. and put together.

  234. These sayings

  235. are like goads.

  236. Do you remember

  237. a few weeks ago

  238. we said what a goad is?

  239. It's that sharp pointed stick

  240. that a farmer uses

  241. to provoke the sheep

  242. and the cattle

  243. to go where he wants them to go.

  244. And so as the author's been,

  245. as the teacher's been

  246. collecting these sayings,

  247. he says,

  248. these words of wisdom

  249. are like a goad

  250. that are meant

  251. to provoke us

  252. out of our slumber,

  253. out of our laziness.

  254. They get us thinking.

  255. They get us thinking

  256. about what is life

  257. really about?

  258. What is the meaning

  259. and the purpose of life?

  260. And so the author is saying,

  261. actually the teacher's

  262. in his quest

  263. to find the meaning of life,

  264. he's been provoked,

  265. he's been challenged,

  266. he's been provoked

  267. out of his complacency.

  268. Sometimes words of wisdom

  269. are uncomfortable.

  270. Sometimes God's word

  271. is uncomfortable.

  272. uncomfortable.

  273. Sometimes God's word

  274. can feel like

  275. it is provoking you,

  276. challenging you.

  277. And if you're new to faith,

  278. that might feel uncomfortable

  279. at times.

  280. You read something

  281. in the Bible

  282. and you think,

  283. hang on, hang on,

  284. I don't know

  285. if I can believe that.

  286. But isn't that exactly

  287. what you'd expect

  288. from a God

  289. who's different from you?

  290. I mean,

  291. if you just agree,

  292. if the Bible agrees

  293. with everything

  294. that you believe

  295. and your worldview,

  296. is God maybe not

  297. just exactly like you?

  298. Sometimes God's word

  299. can provoke us,

  300. can challenge us,

  301. can offend you even.

  302. But the words of wisdom

  303. are like that.

  304. They challenge our complacency.

  305. And so the author says,

  306. yes,

  307. Kohelet's search

  308. has yielded some wise words

  309. which are meant

  310. to help us think

  311. about the meaning

  312. and the purpose of life.

  313. There's some wisdom there.

  314. But on the other hand,

  315. the author says,

  316. actually,

  317. this doesn't really help

  318. Kohelet.

  319. In many ways,

  320. he gets back,

  321. he comes back

  322. to where he began

  323. in the first place.

  324. Look at verse 12.

  325. He says,

  326. My son,

  327. beware of anything

  328. beyond these.

  329. Or another translation says,

  330. Furthermore,

  331. my son,

  332. be warned of this.

  333. Of making many books,

  334. in other words,

  335. writing many wise things,

  336. there is no end.

  337. And much study

  338. is a weariness

  339. to the flesh.

  340. The author's telling us here,

  341. you can search

  342. for all eternity

  343. and explore human philosophy

  344. and human wisdom

  345. and never arrive

  346. at anything concrete,

  347. any conclusion.

  348. You can read

  349. a thousand sacred texts

  350. and you can travel

  351. to the Himalayas

  352. and go to this temple

  353. and sit under

  354. this Buddhist teaching

  355. and listen to that preacher

  356. and listen to a million sermons.

  357. And if all you're doing

  358. is filling your head

  359. with more and more knowledge,

  360. you can go round

  361. and round in circles

  362. and wear yourself out

  363. and never arrive

  364. at anything concrete

  365. or substantial.

  366. In fact,

  367. this is exactly

  368. what happened

  369. with Kohileth.

  370. If you got your Bible,

  371. turn back with me

  372. to chapter 1,

  373. verses 2.

  374. The opening sentence

  375. of the teacher,

  376. these are his words.

  377. Meaningless,

  378. meaningless,

  379. says the teacher.

  380. Meaningless,

  381. meaningless.

  382. Everything is

  383. meaningless.

  384. meaningless.

  385. That's how he began

  386. his search.

  387. And 5,500 words later,

  388. 220 verses later,

  389. 12 chapters later,

  390. how does the teacher

  391. end his search

  392. for meaning?

  393. Well, look at the very

  394. last thing he says

  395. in chapter 12,

  396. verse 8.

  397. Meaningless,

  398. meaningless,

  399. says the teacher.

  400. Everything is meaningless.

  401. Here this wise man,

  402. this teacher,

  403. has gone on this

  404. lifetime exploration

  405. of the meaning

  406. and the search of life

  407. and he's collected sayings

  408. and he's interviewed

  409. hundreds of people

  410. and he's sat under

  411. the very best teachers

  412. and where has he ended up?

  413. At the exact same place

  414. where he began.

  415. He has gone round

  416. and round

  417. in circles

  418. and made no ground.

  419. I don't know if you remember

  420. Nielsen's very first sermon

  421. from six weeks ago

  422. in chapter 1.

  423. He spoke

  424. from chapter 1

  425. about how the teacher

  426. says,

  427. life just goes round.

  428. The river runs down

  429. and gets into the sea

  430. and the sea never gets full.

  431. The wind blows

  432. from east

  433. to west

  434. and west

  435. to east

  436. and east

  437. to west.

  438. The sun rises

  439. and it sets

  440. and tomorrow

  441. it rises

  442. and it sets.

  443. There is no change,

  444. there is no gain,

  445. there is no point.

  446. Do you remember that?

  447. Well that's exactly

  448. where Kohelet has landed.

  449. The opening sentence

  450. of his search

  451. is identical

  452. to the closing sentence

  453. of his search.

  454. Meaningless,

  455. meaningless

  456. says the teacher

  457. there is no meaning.

  458. And so having explored

  459. wisdom

  460. and pleasure

  461. and work

  462. and money

  463. and death

  464. and youthfulness

  465. and old age

  466. and truth

  467. and justice

  468. the teacher

  469. has come back

  470. full circle

  471. to where he began.

  472. The author says

  473. verse 12

  474. Be warned

  475. my son

  476. of these

  477. there is no end

  478. of the making

  479. of many books

  480. there is no end

  481. and much study

  482. is a weariness

  483. to the flesh.

  484. And at this point

  485. the author

  486. steps out

  487. from behind

  488. the curtain

  489. Shakespeare

  490. comes out

  491. from behind

  492. the pen

  493. the songwriter

  494. comes out

  495. from behind

  496. the album

  497. and he

  498. tells us

  499. that he

  500. respectfully

  501. disagrees.

  502. He has arranged

  503. the words

  504. of the teacher

  505. like goads

  506. to provoke us

  507. and to challenge us

  508. and just when we think

  509. we might be tempted

  510. to agree

  511. with Kohelet

  512. he says

  513. no

  514. that's not

  515. the point of life

  516. don't listen

  517. to Kohelet

  518. that's not

  519. what I want

  520. you to say.

  521. Look at verse

  522. 13 with me

  523. the end

  524. of the matter

  525. in Hebrew

  526. there's just

  527. two words there

  528. end matter

  529. it's emphatic

  530. it's like

  531. final conclusion

  532. the end

  533. of the matter

  534. all has been

  535. heard

  536. fear God

  537. keep his commands

  538. for this

  539. is the whole

  540. duty

  541. or the essence

  542. of man.

  543. The teacher

  544. has gone round

  545. and round

  546. in circles

  547. and ended up

  548. back where he

  549. started

  550. and just when

  551. we're thinking

  552. this has been

  553. a monumental

  554. waste

  555. of six weeks

  556. of coming

  557. to church

  558. the author

  559. steps in

  560. and says

  561. wait

  562. let me put

  563. you back

  564. on the path

  565. let me put

  566. your feet

  567. on a solid

  568. rock

  569. the end

  570. of the matter

  571. all has

  572. been heard

  573. in the turmoil

  574. and the confusion

  575. in the disorder

  576. of life

  577. here is a word

  578. that will break

  579. the cycle

  580. of futility

  581. that will cause

  582. you not to

  583. waste your life

  584. when you feel

  585. like you're walking

  586. on sinking sand

  587. and you're sinking

  588. deeper

  589. and deeper

  590. and deeper

  591. when the ideas

  592. and the philosophies

  593. of world views

  594. take you nowhere

  595. here is a rock

  596. upon which you can

  597. build and bank

  598. your life

  599. when the winds

  600. of change blow

  601. in a post-modern

  602. post-truth world

  603. where everything

  604. is up for grabs

  605. and nothing is certain

  606. the author

  607. steps in

  608. and says

  609. here is a word

  610. of conviction

  611. here is a word

  612. of certainty

  613. here is a word

  614. of clarity

  615. when all has

  616. been heard

  617. and said

  618. fear God

  619. keep his commands

  620. this is the essence

  621. of mankind

  622. or humanity

  623. now

  624. if you're new

  625. to church

  626. or new

  627. to faith

  628. that instruction

  629. to fear God

  630. may sound

  631. pretty odd

  632. I mean

  633. we've got enough

  634. things in life

  635. to fear already

  636. right

  637. we don't need

  638. to add more

  639. to it

  640. what's up

  641. with this instruction

  642. to fear God

  643. the word fear

  644. feels like a very

  645. negative emotion

  646. it feels

  647. disempowering

  648. when you fear

  649. something

  650. you want to draw

  651. back and retreat

  652. right

  653. I remember

  654. when I was a boy

  655. we grew up

  656. in Johannesburg

  657. and you know

  658. we don't live

  659. in apartments

  660. in South Africa

  661. you have a garden

  662. and my brother

  663. and I used to play

  664. cricket

  665. most afternoons

  666. and we invariably

  667. hit the tennis ball

  668. over the wall

  669. and so you'd jump

  670. over the wall

  671. to go and fetch

  672. the tennis ball

  673. but the neighbors

  674. had some big dogs

  675. and so you'd jump

  676. up on the wall

  677. and you had to look

  678. under the trees

  679. if the dogs were around

  680. and then you'd jump

  681. over quickly

  682. get the ball

  683. throw it over

  684. and often the dogs

  685. would hear you

  686. jumping over

  687. and would run

  688. like crazy

  689. down the garden

  690. and you had to

  691. leap up

  692. grab on the tree

  693. and climb back

  694. over the wall

  695. before the dogs

  696. got you

  697. right

  698. fear

  699. feels like something

  700. you want to run

  701. away from

  702. or escape

  703. so what's up

  704. when the Bible

  705. says we should

  706. fear God

  707. I mean that

  708. he says this is

  709. the sum total

  710. the essence

  711. of what it means

  712. to be human

  713. when he says

  714. this is the whole

  715. duty of man

  716. the Hebrew

  717. doesn't have

  718. the word duty

  719. this is the essence

  720. of humanity

  721. well admittedly

  722. the Hebrew word

  723. to fear

  724. is a difficult

  725. word to translate

  726. sometimes it can

  727. mean fright

  728. or scared

  729. but generally

  730. it means

  731. an awe

  732. or reverence

  733. before something

  734. that is majestic

  735. to be an awe

  736. or reverential

  737. before something

  738. of authority

  739. listen to how

  740. Sinclair Ferguson

  741. describes it

  742. this is the best

  743. description of the

  744. fear of God

  745. I can find

  746. he says this

  747. to fear God

  748. is to know him

  749. and yet to love him

  750. wholeheartedly

  751. and unreservedly

  752. because of who

  753. he is

  754. and what he

  755. has done

  756. to have this

  757. profound sense

  758. of being

  759. in the presence

  760. of majesty

  761. it is a thrilling

  762. awareness

  763. that we have

  764. this greatest

  765. of all privileges

  766. mingled

  767. with the

  768. realization

  769. that now

  770. the only thing

  771. that really matters

  772. in all the world

  773. is his opinion

  774. to have the assurance

  775. of his smile

  776. is everything

  777. and yet to feel

  778. that he frowns

  779. on what we may

  780. do

  781. is desolation

  782. or anguish

  783. to fear God

  784. is to be sensitive

  785. to both his greatness

  786. and also his

  787. graciousness

  788. to fear God

  789. friends

  790. is to humbly

  791. and yet assuredly

  792. bring our entire

  793. lives before him

  794. and say

  795. here I am

  796. have your way

  797. in my life

  798. knowing that

  799. you are completely

  800. known by him

  801. anyway

  802. and yet somehow

  803. loved by him

  804. nonetheless

  805. and the bible

  806. says

  807. new testament

  808. and old testament

  809. that this is actually

  810. one of the most

  811. important ways

  812. to relate

  813. to God

  814. if you want to

  815. know God

  816. if you want to

  817. experience

  818. the living God

  819. one of the ways

  820. to relate to him

  821. is to relate to him

  822. like this

  823. to fear him

  824. let me read a couple

  825. of scriptures

  826. just to show us

  827. this

  828. Deuteronomy 10

  829. says this

  830. and now

  831. what does the

  832. Lord your God

  833. require of you

  834. but to fear

  835. the Lord your God

  836. to walk in his ways

  837. to love him

  838. to serve him

  839. with all your heart

  840. and with all your soul

  841. or think of Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  842. chapter 2

  843. in the new testament

  844. the apostle Paul

  845. after writing about

  846. the majesty of Jesus

  847. who went on the cross

  848. for sinners like us

  849. says this

  850. therefore now

  851. brothers and sisters

  852. as you have always

  853. obeyed in my absence

  854. so now much more

  855. in my presence

  856. now much more

  857. in my absence

  858. work out your salvation

  859. with fear

  860. and trembling

  861. with a sense

  862. of trepidation

  863. knowing that God

  864. is at work

  865. in your life

  866. or in Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  867. chapter 12

  868. writes this

  869. let us offer

  870. acceptable worship

  871. to God

  872. with fear

  873. and awe

  874. knowing that our God

  875. is a consuming fire

  876. in other words

  877. we don't approach God

  878. with just a callousness

  879. and a casualness

  880. and a oh well

  881. you know

  882. we'll see what happens

  883. there's a reverence

  884. for who he is

  885. this is the sum total

  886. all has been heard

  887. and said

  888. fear God

  889. keep his commands

  890. now what does that

  891. actually mean

  892. what does that look like

  893. in our lives

  894. well a couple of things

  895. on the one hand

  896. it means to trust

  897. God supremely

  898. in scripture

  899. to fear God

  900. means realizing

  901. that God

  902. is bigger

  903. than our issues

  904. and therefore

  905. we can trust him

  906. with our issues

  907. in Exodus chapter 20

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  908. as the people

  909. are in the wilderness

  910. Moses says this

  911. to them

  912. he says

  913. do not fear

  914. the giants

  915. the problems

  916. the wilderness

  917. the things around you

  918. don't be afraid

  919. of those

  920. for God

  921. has come to you

  922. to test you

  923. that the fear

  924. of God

  925. may be before you

  926. and that you may not sin

  927. so saying

  928. you're going to come

  929. against a whole lot

  930. of obstacles

  931. don't be afraid

  932. of them

  933. but have a worldview

  934. see in your mind

  935. the majesty of God

  936. fear him

  937. and trust him

  938. as you face

  939. these challenges

  940. and so friends

  941. what are some of the challenges

  942. that you face

  943. this week

  944. are the economies

  945. and tatters

  946. maybe work is

  947. challenging

  948. maybe uncertain

  949. whether you're going

  950. to keep your job

  951. that's okay

  952. don't fear that

  953. fear God

  954. God is bigger

  955. than your work

  956. God is bigger

  957. than your travels

  958. God is bigger

  959. than your challenges

  960. fear God

  961. he is God

  962. work is not God

  963. your boss is not God

  964. the economy is not God

  965. no God is God

  966. and therefore

  967. you can trust him

  968. it's to trust him

  969. supremely

  970. it's a call

  971. to prioritize God

  972. as first

  973. in our hearts

  974. and our lives

  975. to fear God

  976. is to live

  977. with the realization

  978. that God is God

  979. and I am not

  980. that God

  981. is the center

  982. of the cosmos

  983. the universe

  984. and I am not

  985. now that's not

  986. just being humble

  987. that's being honest

  988. that's not humility

  989. that's just reality

  990. the problem of course

  991. with humanity

  992. is that we tend

  993. to think of ourselves

  994. as the center

  995. of the universe

  996. and that causes

  997. all sorts of problems

  998. right

  999. and this is what

  1000. the teacher

  1001. wants us to see

  1002. what the author

  1003. wants us to see

  1004. he's saying

  1005. you may never

  1006. find the answer

  1007. to every question

  1008. that you ask

  1009. you may not

  1010. find the solution

  1011. to every philosophical

  1012. conundrum

  1013. that's okay

  1014. following Jesus

  1015. doesn't promise

  1016. to solve every problem

  1017. or make life easy

1018. and a bed of roses

  1019. in fact

  1020. if you're going

  1021. to follow Jesus

  1022. sometimes that's going

  1023. to make life

  1024. more difficult

1025. but what he is saying

  1026. is this

  1027. if you fear God

  1028. you will break

  1029. out of the cycle

  1030. of futility

1031. if you want to find

  1032. the essence of life

  1033. know this

  1034. he is God

  1035. he is the center

  1036. of the universe

  1037. you are not

  1038. so it's a call

  1039. to prioritize God

  1040. but it's also

  1041. a call to enjoy

  1042. the blessings of God

  1043. without being ensnared

  1044. by them

  1045. I don't know

  1046. if you've noticed

  1047. over the last couple

  1048. of weeks

  1049. as we've gone

  1050. through Ecclesiastes

  1051. there are these

  1052. kind of weird passages

  1053. throughout the book

  1054. that Tremper Longman

  1055. calls the Carpe Diem

  1056. passages

  1057. they say

  1058. drink

  1059. be merry

  1060. eat your bread

  1061. enjoy the wife

  1062. of your youth

  1063. do what you want

  1064. live it up

  1065. and if I'm honest

1066. as one of the preachers

  1067. we've kind of skipped

  1068. over them pretty quickly

  1069. have you noticed that

  1070. okay

  1071. maybe in CG

  1072. you've asked that question

  1073. why don't they ever

  1074. talk about these things

  1075. okay

  1076. and the reason is

  1077. because these are

  1078. pretty difficult passages

1079. I mean what do you

  1080. do with them

  1081. right

  1082. are these passages

  1083. God's wisdom to us

  1084. that we should obey

  1085. or is this

  1086. the foolishness

  1087. of the teacher

  1088. that we should reject

  1089. right

1090. well what do we do

  1091. with these

  1092. Carpe Diem passages

  1093. well I think

  1094. the answer is this

  1095. the answer is

  1096. if you fear God

  1097. obey them

  1098. and enjoy the blessings

  1099. of God

  1100. but if you don't

  1101. be very careful

  1102. in other words

1103. if you want to enjoy

1104. the good things in life

  1105. without being ensnared

  1106. by them

  1107. without being mastered

  1108. by them

  1109. make sure that

  1110. God is your God

  1111. not the pleasures

  1112. of life

  1113. don't live for the

  1114. pleasures of life

  1115. they'll ensnare you

  1116. live for God

1117. and if you live for God

  1118. you get to enjoy

  1119. the pleasures of life

  1120. and be free

  1121. from their snares

  1122. and their tentacles

  1123. the way to enjoy

  1124. the pleasures of life

  1125. without them

  1126. becoming your God

1127. is to live for the

  1128. one true God

  1129. and to center

  1130. your life on him

  1131. because when you

  1132. live for Christ

  1133. and his approval

  1134. when he is your

  1135. deepest longing

  1136. and your greatest

  1137. ambition

  1138. when what God

  1139. thinks about a matter

  1140. is the most important

  1141. thing to you

  1142. when you fear God

  1143. then you can live

  1144. however you please

  1145. maybe another way

  1146. of saying it

  1147. is like this

  1148. friends love the

  1149. Lord your God

  1150. with all your heart

  1151. and all your soul

  1152. and all your might

  1153. and all your strength

  1154. and you'll figure

  1155. the rest out

  1156. as you go along

  1157. so as a Christian

  1158. there are many

  1159. things in life

  1160. that the Bible

  1161. doesn't give us

  1162. answers to

  1163. should you

  1164. take that promotion

  1165. that new job

  1166. well fear God

1167. and you'll figure it out

  1168. maybe you're dating

  1169. somebody

  1170. and there's a hole

  1171. of questions

  1172. you're not sure

  1173. how do you handle

  1174. this relationship

  1175. what's appropriate

  1176. what's not appropriate

  1177. well fear God

1178. and you'll figure it out

1179. maybe you're not so sure

  1180. about money

  1181. how much is enough

  1182. I mean

1183. how much should I give away

1184. how much should I save

1185. the Bible doesn't give you

  1186. an answer to that

  1187. well fear God

  1188. sent to your life

1189. on the majesty of Jesus

1190. and you'll figure it out

1191. so when you come to

  1192. those Carpe Diem passages

  1193. the answer is this

1194. let the fear of God

  1195. being your guiding rock

1196. the light of the path

1197. and if you do that

  1198. you can enjoy

  1199. the pleasures of life

  1200. without them

  1201. becoming your God

  1202. does that make sense

  1203. the fear of God

  1204. is a clarifying word

1205. in a world of confusion

1206. but here's the other thing

  1207. it means

  1208. the fourth thing

  1209. the final thing

  1210. is this

  1211. it's a call

  1212. to eternal significance

  1213. look at verse 14

  1214. with me

  1215. of our passage

  1216. it's the final verse

  1217. in the whole book

  1218. of Ecclesiastes

1219. and this is what it says

1220. the end of the matter

  1221. all has been heard

  1222. fear God

  1223. keep his commands

1224. this is the essence of man

  1225. verse 14

  1226. for God will bring

  1227. every deed

  1228. into judgment

  1229. with every secret thing

  1230. whether good

  1231. or evil

  1232. what the author

  1233. tells us here

  1234. is that one day

  1235. each one of us

  1236. is going to be

  1237. accountable to God

  1238. for the lives

  1239. that we've lived

  1240. he says

  1241. every deed

  1242. whether good

  1243. or evil

  1244. positive

  1245. or negative

1246. now on the one hand

  1247. that should cause

  1248. a humility

  1249. because we should know

1250. that we're going to be

  1251. answerable to God

  1252. for the way

1253. that we've lived our lives

  1254. every careless word

  1255. that you've said

  1256. every dumb tweet

  1257. that you've loaded up

  1258. on social media

  1259. right

  1260. every grudge

  1261. that I've held

  1262. in my heart

  1263. every stupid thing

  1264. I've done

1265. I'm going to one day

  1266. be accountable

  1267. to God for that

  1268. but it's not

1269. not only the negative things

1270. it's also the positive things

1271. look at what he says

  1272. for every deed

  1273. whether evil

  1274. or good

  1275. in other words

  1276. what he says

  1277. every little thing

  1278. that I do

  1279. in God's name

1280. for the glory of God

1281. is not going to be forgotten

  1282. Jesus actually says

  1283. this in Matthew 10

  1284. he says

1285. every cup of cold water

  1286. that you give

  1287. to a little child

  1288. in his name

  1289. and for his glory

  1290. you will

1291. how does he say it

1292. you will by no means

  1293. lose your reward

1294. and what Jesus is saying here

  1295. is you can do

  1296. little things

  1297. that nobody

  1298. in the world notices

  1299. every good motivation

  1300. in your heart

  1301. every little thing

  1302. that you do

  1303. has eternal

  1304. significance

  1305. because sovereign God

  1306. in heaven notices

  1307. and it's not

  1308. inconsequential

  1309. and so

  1310. that little thing

  1311. that you do

  1312. that nobody notices

  1313. it

1314. or put it this way

  1315. it transforms

  1316. the meaningless things

  1317. of our life

  1318. into that

  1319. which has eternal

  1320. significance

  1321. and purpose

  1322. suddenly the myriad

  1323. of things

  1324. that Kohelet looks at

  1325. and thinks

  1326. meaningless

  1327. vanity

  1328. purposelessness

  1329. are suddenly impregnated

  1330. with eternal meaning

1331. and so think about this

  1332. tomorrow

1333. you're going to go to work

1334. and if Kohelet is right

  1335. meaningless

  1336. vanity

  1337. purposelessness

  1338. who cares

1339. your job is just a means

  1340. to get a salary

  1341. to earn some money

1342. and then you're going to die

1343. but if the author is right

1344. if God is going to bring

  1345. every little thing

  1346. that you do

  1347. and remember it

  1348. nothing is inconsequential

  1349. and so suddenly

  1350. that transforms

  1351. your work

  1352. into just an opportunity

  1353. to earn a salary

  1354. and get money

  1355. into a vocation

  1356. into a calling

  1357. into a chance

  1358. to bless somebody

1359. a chance to glorify God

  1360. in your workplace

  1361. it's a chance to

  1362. as you go

1363. and teach in the classroom

  1364. to impact students

  1365. and to grow them

1366. as you do your research

  1367. it's a way to find out

  1368. about the world

  1369. that God has made

1370. and make it a better place

1371. as you write up a contract

  1372. as a lawyer

  1373. it's a chance

  1374. to do justice

  1375. and do what's right

  1376. to protect someone's interests

  1377. as you make money

  1378. it's a chance

1379. to provide for somebody's pension

1380. and care for their future

  1381. knowing that your life

  1382. is not inconsequential

  1383. changes your workplace

  1384. it impregnates

1385. every little thing you do

  1386. with eternal significance

  1387. and meaning

  1388. or think about pleasure

  1389. if you're in Christ

1390. and you seek to honor God

  1391. and live by faith

1392. the things that you do

  1393. enjoy in life

  1394. are not just distractions

  1395. from the arbitrary

  1396. meaninglessness of life

  1397. to keep you going

1398. through the drudgery of life

1399. they are gifts of heaven

  1400. for you to enjoy

  1401. they are gifts

  1402. from your father

1403. and so as you go

  1404. on that trip

  1405. or that overseas holiday

  1406. as you go

  1407. and enjoy time

  1408. with your kids

  1409. these are a gift

  1410. from God

  1411. for you to enjoy

  1412. or think about money

  1413. and wealth

  1414. for the teacher

  1415. money was an enigma

  1416. it was something

1417. he was meant to enjoy

1418. but it only ended up

  1419. causing pain

  1420. but if Christ

  1421. is supreme

  1422. if he's the one

  1423. that you love

  1424. and treasure unreservedly

  1425. you get to enjoy

  1426. the blessings of God

  1427. without feeling guilty

  1428. because money

  1429. is not your God

  1430. but God is

  1431. well friends

  1432. think about the fact

  1433. that one day

1434. you're going to get old

  1435. and one day

  1436. you're going to die

  1437. for Kohelet

  1438. this is completely meaningless

  1439. arbitrary

  1440. we get old

  1441. ultimately

1442. death is the final enemy

1443. none of us get to defeat it

  1444. and that's the end

  1445. but for the author

  1446. he says

  1447. that's not true

  1448. if you're in Christ

1449. if you live for God

1450. if God is the one

1451. that you live to please

  1452. the most important one

  1453. in your heart

1454. then you can truly say

  1455. with the apostle Paul

  1456. to live is Christ

  1457. and to die

  1458. is gain

  1459. because the grave

  1460. has been defeated

  1461. one day

1462. at the end of your life

  1463. death gets transformed

  1464. from an enemy

  1465. into a servant

1466. that will take you home

  1467. what the author

  1468. is saying here

  1469. is that

  1470. to live

  1471. for the majesty

  1472. of God

  1473. makes every little

  1474. meaningless

  1475. and arbitrary

  1476. thing in life

  1477. suddenly impregnated

  1478. with significant

  1479. and eternal consequence

  1480. because nothing

  1481. is forgotten

  1482. friends you

  1483. but now

  1484. see what he says

  1485. he says

  1486. there is a point

  1487. if you don't want

  1488. to waste your life

  1489. and I don't want you

  1490. to waste your life

  1491. then walk away

  1492. from the futility

1493. of life under the sun

  1494. abandon empty philosophy

  1495. abandon humanistic

  1496. wisdom

  1497. abandon your striving

  1498. after the wind

  1499. trying to grasp

  1500. the wind

  1501. center your life

  1502. on God

  1503. and who he is

  1504. truly the God

  1505. who is the center

  1506. of the cosmos

  1507. who knows you

  1508. better than you

  1509. know yourself

  1510. who loves you

  1511. better than

  1512. you could ever

  1513. love yourself

1514. or hope to be love

  1515. set your hope

  1516. on him

  1517. friends the words

  1518. of the author

  1519. is this

  1520. give yourself

  1521. to the only one

  1522. whose opinion

  1523. really matters

  1524. in life

  1525. live under the

  1526. greatness

  1527. and of his grace

  1528. give yourself

  1529. to him

  1530. don't waste

  1531. your life

  1532. live for the

  1533. one who knows

  1534. you infinitely

  1535. better than you

  1536. could ever hope

  1537. to imagine

  1538. and yet who loves

  1539. you to the cross

  1540. and back

  1541. all has been

  1542. heard

  1543. this is the end

  1544. of the matter

  1545. fear God

  1546. live for him

  1547. set your hope

  1548. on him

  1549. this is the

  1550. essence

  1551. of humanity

  1552. well as we

  1553. come to a

  1554. close

  1555. how should

  1556. we do

  1557. this

  1558. how should

  1559. we grow

  1560. in the

  1561. fear of

  1562. God

  1563. well I want

  1564. to give us

  1565. three quick

  1566. suggestions

  1567. three very

  1568. simple ways

  1569. to do this

  1570. how do we

  1571. become those

  1572. who are not

  1573. enslaved by the

  1574. trappings of

  1575. life

  1576. but live in

  1577. the fear of

  1578. God

  1579. how do we

  1580. become those

  1581. who as

  1582. Sinclair Ferguson

  1583. said

  1584. live with the

  1585. assurance of his

  1586. smile as the

  1587. most important

  1588. thing in our

  1589. life

  1590. how do we

  1591. live with his

  1592. opinion as the

  1593. most important

  1594. thing to us

  1595. well three brief

  1596. things

  1597. first do this

  1598. dive into the

  1599. scriptures

  1600. dive into the

  1601. scriptures

  1602. Christian writer

  1603. and author

  1604. Tim Talley

  1605. says this

  1606. there is an

  1607. inseparable

  1608. relationship

  1609. between the

  1610. revelation of

  1611. God in the

  1612. scriptures

  1613. and the fear

  1614. of God in the

  1615. heart

  1616. Cynthia you okay

  1617. you're welcome

  1618. to go

  1619. to the degree

  1620. that we are in

  1621. the scriptures

  1622. is the degree

  1623. to which the

  1624. fear of God

  1625. will reside

  1626. in our hearts

  1627. friends you

  1628. want to be those

  1629. who fear God

  1630. you must come

  1631. to know him

  1632. as he reveals

  1633. himself in the

  1634. scriptures

  1635. you cannot grow

  1636. as a Christian

  1637. without being

  1638. committed to his

  1639. word

  1640. friends day by day

  1641. start off your

  1642. day getting on

  1643. your knees and

  1644. saying God

  1645. come and reveal

  1646. yourself show

  1647. yourself to me

  1648. I want to know

  1649. you as you reveal

  1650. yourself to me

  1651. in your word

  1652. dive deep into

  1653. the scriptures

  1654. secondly feed

  1655. your soul on the

  1656. majesty of God

  1657. J.B.

  1658. wrote Phillips

  1659. wrote a book

  1660. and he says

  1661. your God is too

  1662. small

  1663. I think that's

  1664. true for most

  1665. of us

  1666. even as

  1667. Christians our

  1668. view of God

  1669. is infinitely

  1670. infinitely

  1671. small

  1672. friends if you

  1673. want to grow

  1674. in the fear

  1675. of God

  1676. if you want

  1677. to be rooted

  1678. and anchored

  1679. into a solid

  1680. rock

  1681. Christ our

  1682. assurance

  1683. in the midst

  1684. of the storms

  1685. and the uncertainty

  1686. of life

  1687. get to know

  1688. the majesty

  1689. and the

  1690. immensity

  1691. and the

  1692. sovereignty

  1693. and the

  1694. holiness

  1695. and the

  1696. infinite

  1697. glory

  1698. of who

  1699. God is

  1700. don't have

  1701. a small

  1702. view of God

  1703. get to know

  1704. his majesty

  1705. friends the

  1706. one true

  1707. God of the

  1708. Bible is

  1709. infinitely more

  1710. majestic

  1711. and glorious

  1712. than you can

  1713. imagine

  1714. grow your

  1715. understanding

  1716. of who

  1717. God is

  1718. to the

  1719. degree to

  1720. which we

  1721. know his

  1722. majesty

  1723. and his

  1724. sovereignty

  1725. and his

  1726. holiness

  1727. and his

  1728. splendor

  1729. is the

  1730. degree to

  1731. which God

  1732. will consume

  1733. our hearts

  1734. know the

  1735. depth of

  1736. his majesty

  1737. and then

  1738. finally

  1739. prayerfully

  1740. surrender

  1741. to Christ

  1742. prayerfully

  1743. surrender

  1744. to him

  1745. Psalm 86

  1746. Jeremy put

  1747. this up

  1748. on the

  1749. slide

  1750. earlier

  1751. I didn't

  1752. know that

  1753. Jeremy was

  1754. going to

  1755. but Psalm 86

  1756. says this

  1757. this has been

  1758. my prayer

  1759. for my

  1760. heart

  1761. this week

  1762. and my

  1763. prayer

  1764. for us

  1765. as a

  1766. church

  1767. and I

  1768. want to

  1769. urge you

  1770. to make

  1771. this your

  1772. prayer

  1773. this week

  1774. there is

  1775. none like

  1776. you amongst

  1777. the gods

  1778. oh lord

  1779. nor are

  1780. there any

  1781. works like

  1782. yours

  1783. for you

  1784. are great

  1785. and do

  1786. wondrous

  1787. things

  1788. you alone

  1789. are God

  1790. and then

  1791. here's the

  1792. prayer

  1793. another

  1794. translation

  1795. says give

  1796. me an

  1797. undivided

  1798. heart

  1799. to fear

  1800. your name

  1801. God don't

  1802. allow me

  1803. just to

  1804. honor you

  1805. and revere

  1806. you on

  1807. Sunday

  1808. morning

  1809. on a

  1810. Thursday

  1811. night

  1812. at CG

  1813. unite

  1814. my heart

  1815. give me

  1816. one heart

  1817. that whether

  1818. I'm in the

  1819. marketplace

  1820. whether I'm

  1821. on the

  1822. sports field

  1823. whether I'm

  1824. out with a

  1825. friend

  1826. whether I'm

  1827. dating

  1828. somebody

  1829. whether I'm

  1830. at home

  1831. or exhausted

  1832. when I'm

  1833. singing songs

  1834. of worship

  1835. may my

  1836. heart be

  1837. undivided

  1838. united

  1839. teach me

  1840. oh God

  1841. your ways

  1842. that I may

  1843. fear your

  1844. name

  1845. God give me

  1846. an undivided

  1847. heart

  1848. to revere

  1849. you

  1850. and to

  1851. know me

  1852. to know

  1853. God

  1854. deeply

  1855. to have

  1856. a heartfelt

  1857. love

  1858. so deep

  1859. and so

  1860. rich

  1861. that it

  1862. changes

  1863. the way

  1864. you live

  1865. begins

  1866. with a

  1867. prayer

  1868. of surrender

  1869. begins

  1870. by saying

  1871. Lord

  1872. have

  1873. your

  1874. way

  1875. in me

  1876. teach

  1877. me

  1878. your

  1879. way

  1880. show

  1881. me

  1882. your

  1883. majesty

  1884. guide

  1885. me

  1886. in

  1887. your

  1888. truth

  1889. give

  1890. me

  1891. an

  1892. undivided

  1893. heart

  1894. that

  1895. fears

  1896. your

  1897. name

  1898. the

  1899. end

  1900. of the

  1901. matter

  1902. all

  1903. has

  1904. been

  1905. heard

  1906. fear

  1907. God

  1908. keep

  1909. his

  1910. commands

  1911. this

  1912. is

  1913. the

  1914. whole

  1915. essence

  1916. of

  1917. man

  1918. let's

  1919. take a

  1920. few

  1921. minutes

  1922. to

  1923. reflect

  1924. and

  1925. respond

  1926. and

  1927. then

  1928. I'll

  1929. lead us

  1930. in what

  1931. to do

  1932. next

  1933. I want

  1934. to encourage

  1935. you

  1936. let's

  1937. just

  1938. maybe

  1939. sit

  1940. quietly

  1941. for a

  1942. minute

  1943. or so

  1944. what is

  1945. an

  1946. appropriate

  1947. response

  1948. for you

  1949. let's

  1950. take

  1951. time

  1952. to do

  1953. that

  1954. more

  1955. how

  1956. AND

  1957. opportunity

  1958. to

  1959. seize

  1960. the

  1961. next

  1962. minute

  1963. and

  1964. to

  1965. explore

  1966. all

  1967. and

  1968. what

  1969. And

  1970. well

  1971. even

  1972. I'm

  1973. writing

  1974. I'm

  1975. writing

  1976. videos

  1977. and

  1978. do

  1979. Thank you.

  1980. Thank you.

  1981. Thank you, God.

  1982. Thank you, God.

  1983. Thank you, God.

1984. God, I pray that we will have such a glimpse of your glory, God, that living for your opinion will be the most important thing in our life.

  1985. Thank you, God.

  1986. Thank you, God.

1987. That knowing that the only thing that matters is what you say and what you feel.

  1988. Thank you, God.

  1989. Thank you, God.

1990. To have the assurance of living under your smile.

1991. God, you're not going to be the most important thing in our life.

1992. I'm going to be the most important thing in our lives.

1993. And to hate the prospect of ever living under your frown.

1994. God help us to be sensitive

  1995. to both your greatness

  1996. and your graciousness

  1997. I pray

  1998. God won't you come

  1999. and deliver us

  2000. from small gods

  2001. insignificant gods

2002. gods that are no gods at all

  2003. come and astound us

  2004. with your majesty

  2005. we pray

  2006. you
