  1. Father, we ask that you would gently but powerfully continue to pour out the Holy Spirit upon us.

  2. We thank you, Father, that we can meet together, whether it's in person or online,

  3. that we can be in your presence.

  4. Father, we acknowledge that you, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, three persons, one God,

  5. that you are the true and living God, the creator and sustainer of all things.

  6. And we give you thanks and praise that we can be in your presence through what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

  7. And we ask now, Lord, that you would minister to us, that you would give to us,

  8. that we would receive grace from your hands in a worthy manner, and that we would respond in a worthy manner.

  9. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. Please be seated.

  11. I just realized I forgot my Mikey thing. That's fine.

  12. People considering the Christian faith today have a lot of extra type of issues which we have to face.

  13. I mean, obviously, people who might first hear about some of the, actually hear what Christianity really is,

  14. and have that shared with them, they're going to have intellectual objections as to why the Christian faith isn't true,

  15. and why they couldn't possibly believe it.

  16. But whether it's acknowledged or not, there's a profound emotional and personal reason

  17. that might make becoming a Christian very difficult.

  18. And that is that we feel that to become a Christian would mean, well, we'd have less friends rather than more,

  19. that we will actually face rejection if we were to become a Christian.

  20. Many people in our culture think that Christianity is toxic,

  21. that rather than being part of a solution or just maybe one neutral option amongst many,

  22. that in fact the Christian faith is part of the problem,

  23. that it has to be rejected, that it's actually literally toxic.

  24. In our country, churches could be burned.

  25. It was just about a year ago that almost 50 churches were either burned or seriously defaced,

  26. and many of the leading lights in our culture just thought that that was fine.

  27. It hardly got any outrage whatsoever.

  28. And so we're sort of familiar with that as part of the issue in our culture,

  29. that if they were to rewrite the book today, How to Win Friends and Influence People,

  30. the first chapter wouldn't say become a Christian.

  31. That in fact would be the opposite of being able to influence people and win friends.

  32. And those of us who are Christians, we feel this in our bones as well.

  33. And so we wrestle with whether or not it's required to,

  34. maybe we should just leave the Christian faith or we should rewrite it

  35. in a way that doesn't get us rejected or put down.

  36. The text that we're going to look at today speaks directly into this issue.

  37. Whether you're a Christian or you're on the outside of the Christian faith looking in,

  38. trying to figure it out, the text that we're looking at today speaks directly to this issue.

  39. So it would be a great help if you were to look with me at the Bible for yourselves

  40. as we go sort of through it.

  41. And it's Mark chapter 6, verses 1 to 13.

    Mark 6:1–13

  42. And we're preaching through the gospel of Mark.

  43. And so what, just to remind us, Mark is one of the ancient eyewitness biographies of Jesus.

  44. Mark would have been an eyewitness of some of the things here,

  45. but he would have drawn upon the actual eyewitnesses.

  46. And this biography was written when the eyewitnesses were all still alive

  47. and kicking, so to speak.

  48. And so this is an ancient eyewitness biography.

  49. And what's just happened before this,

  50. two Sundays ago we looked at Jesus going to the pagan side of the Sea of Galilee,

  51. and he met a man who was possessed by a legion of demons,

  52. and he cast the demons out.

  53. But one of the results of that is that the people of that region wanted Jesus to leave.

  54. They didn't want him to stay there anymore, so he left.

  55. And then he comes to the Jewish side of the Sea of Galilee,

  56. and what we just looked at last week, he's met by a man whose daughter was dying.

  57. And so Jesus agrees to go with the man to heal his daughter.

  58. But on the way, he gets sort of interrupted by a woman who's had a very profound,

  59. and I guess in that cultural time,

  60. embarrassing and weakening medical condition that's impoverished her.

  61. She's had it for 12 years, and he heals her.

  62. But while he pauses, the daughter dies of the synagogue ruler, Jairus.

  63. But Jesus still goes anyway, and he's raised the daughter from the dead.

  64. That's what's just happened before this.

  65. And now the story continues, and here's how it goes.

  66. Jesus went away from there and came to his hometown, which is Nazareth.

  67. We know that Nazareth, archaeologists guess that, or estimate, I guess.

  68. I guess if I did it, it would be a guess, if an archaeologist does it, it's an estimate.

  69. And he estimate that probably at its most it had about 500 people living there.

  70. And anyway, he goes to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

  71. And on the Sabbath, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying,

  72. Where did this man get these things?

  73. Now, just to pause here before we go any further.

  74. Sometimes it's impossible in one language to capture all the significant nuances in another language.

  75. And there's a very significant nuance that's going to happen right here, which isn't really captured with this man.

  76. If you were to see me at a public gathering, and we had somebody there maybe who was a professor

  77. at the University of Ottawa or Carleton or University of Toronto, and they had a couple of PhDs,

  78. and they had a very prestigious position, and if I came up and talked about this guy,

  79. you'd all know that I was putting him down.

  80. If I didn't introduce him as Professor, you know, Bob or Professor Sue,

  81. and, you know, PhD from Oxford, another PhD from Harvard,

  82. if I didn't introduce them like that but just referred to them as this guy,

  83. every single one of you would know that I've just put them down.

  84. And that's what's happening here with this word, this man.

  85. In the original language, it's a dismissive term.

  86. And literally, given that Jesus is right there, it is like a public dismissiveness,

  87. which not only is it a public dismissiveness,

  88. it's a public dismissiveness, as we'll see later on in the story, that's accepted.

  89. In other words, it would be as if we had somebody here, a professor,

  90. and I was to say we're going to hear this guy say a few words,

  91. and all of you folks out there are going like this.

  92. Way to go, George.

  93. This is a good thing to dismiss.

  94. This is a good way to dismiss this guy.

  95. Way to go.

  96. Two thumbs up.

  97. And so just, I'll read it again from verse 2.

  98. That's the context here, right off the bat.

  99. So, and on the Sabbath, Jesus began to teach in the synagogue,

  100. and many who heard him were astonished, saying,

  101. where did this guy get these things?

  102. What is the wisdom given to him?

  103. How are such mighty works done by his hands?

  104. Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James,

  105. and I don't know how to pronounce that word, Joseph, and Judas, and Simon?

  106. And are not his sisters here with us?

  107. And they took offense at him.

  108. So, just a couple of other things that the put-downs continue.

  109. One of them is by referring to Jesus as son of Mary.

  110. The normal Jewish way of referring to a man would be to refer to him as Jesus, son of Joseph.

  111. In fact, there's a bit of debate among scholars,

  112. but most of them would agree that, in fact, it's also a bit of a dig

  113. that he was born illegitimately.

  114. And that, in our culture right now, isn't a bad thing.

  115. But for old people like me, there would be girls in high school who would miss a term, a year.

  116. And everybody would know they missed a year because they got pregnant and had a baby.

  117. They sent the family, sent the girl away completely to another place to have the baby.

  118. And then the baby would be put up for adoption

  119. because it was a shameful thing to have a child out of wedlock.

  120. Some families far more than others, but it was a shameful thing.

  121. It's not a shameful thing in our culture right now,

  122. but in many, many cultures in the world,

  123. it's a shameful thing to have a child out of wedlock.

  124. And once again, if I had a person here and I was introducing them

  125. and there was something shameful in our culture,

  126. and I pointed it out in public to everybody,

  127. and you all went like this,

  128. you can get a sense of what's going on here with Jesus.

  129. There is, in a sense, a very public dismissing of him,

  130. put down, and rejection of him.

  131. And just one other thing about this put down of him

  132. is that in the Jewish culture,

  133. it's not a shameful thing to be a carpenter.

  134. In fact, it would have been considered an honorable thing.

  135. It wouldn't have made him eligible to really be a rabbi.

  136. It didn't mean he had high-level qualifications,

  137. but it wouldn't be a put down necessarily.

  138. But in the other world,

  139. and Mark, the original writer of this ancient biography,

  140. is writing it not in Hebrew or Aramaic,

  141. but is writing it in Greek,

  142. so it's designed for the wider culture.

  143. And Nazareth itself is actually only four,

  144. I can't remember now if it's four kilometers or four miles,

  145. but just from a very, very significant Gentile city.

  146. And in the Gentile or the pagan world,

  147. a carpenter would be like a real put down.

  148. You know, it would be like in our day

  149. at the University of Ottawa,

  150. if they were introducing somebody and they said a janitor.

  151. And everybody in the University of Ottawa,

  152. well, just a janitor.

  153. Like, just a janitor.

  154. Not somebody with even a BA or an MA or a PhD.

  155. So there's multiple putting down of Jesus

  156. here in this particular story.

  157. So the interesting thing then

  158. is he's been publicly put down,

  159. publicly dismissed, publicly rejected.

  160. And he's been,

  161. this is done in a context where people know him.

  162. And they feel they have the sufficient social power

  163. to get away with it, and they do.

  164. So how does Jesus react?

  165. Like, how does he react?

  166. Like, let's just be honest here for a second.

  167. Like, you'll notice that over the last few weeks,

  168. I often say that the Gospels act

  169. as both a mirror and a window.

  170. It's a mirror in the sense that it helps you,

  171. if you think about it, to see yourself.

  172. It's a window in the sense that it actually helps you

  173. to understand a little bit about

  174. what the true and living God is actually like,

  175. what the universe is actually like.

  176. It's a window into understanding the real world.

  177. But, you know,

  178. you guys are probably all vastly more holy than me.

  179. But I would,

  180. I probably would sulk.

  181. And inwardly, I would storm and rage.

  182. And I would pout.

  183. And I would alternate internally between self-pity

  184. and murderous revenge fantasies.

  185. But as I said, that's probably just me.

  186. None of you would feel the same way

  187. to be publicly rejected, dismissed, and humiliated.

  188. And I also might, of course,

  189. feel severe self-doubt as well

  190. after actually being put down in such a way.

  191. Because we are social creatures,

  192. and to be treated in such a way

  193. often creates within us these,

  194. if you're at all like me,

  195. you can go back and forward

  196. between self-pity, anger, and doubt,

  197. all going back and forward

  198. in the face of this type of thing.

  199. So what does Jesus do?

  200. What does Jesus do?

  201. Well, let's look.

  202. Verse 4.

  203. We see the first bit of his response.

  204. In some ways,

  205. what we see from verses 4

  206. right through to 13

  207. is how Jesus responds

  208. to this particular situation

  209. and how his disciples react

  210. to Jesus' response.

  211. And so in verse 4,

  212. you see the first part of it.

  213. You see he makes a comment.

  214. And Jesus said to them,

  215. to them,

  216. not only to his disciples,

  217. but to the people of Nazareth,

  218. a prophet is not without honor

  219. except in his hometown

  220. and among his relatives

  221. and in his own household.

  222. So the first bit he does

  223. is he actually names it.

  224. He names it in public.

  225. He uses a common type of a parable

  226. or saying that was both common

  227. in the pagan world

  228. and common in the Jewish world.

  229. And he says that this is just,

  230. this is what you've actually,

  231. this is what's happening.

  232. I'm not being honored.

  233. And it's actually very,

  234. very interesting

  235. that this helps to show

  236. that the people

  237. who are saying these things

  238. about Jesus,

  239. obviously not all of it,

  240. but in some ways,

  241. his family,

  242. his own family is involved

  243. in this put down of Jesus.

  244. It would be as if his brother

  245. or his half-brother James

  246. says,

  247. like,

  248. this guy's just a carpenter.

  249. Like,

  250. come on,

  251. I'm his brother.

  252. Like,

  253. we're his brothers and sisters.

  254. Like,

  255. who does,

  256. like,

  257. who does he think he is

  258. to do all this stuff?

  259. And so he,

  260. he names it.

  261. Now,

  262. the next thing that he does

  263. is actually very,

  264. very interesting,

  265. although often what we,

  266. when we read the next bit,

  267. we miss what he's done

  268. because we get confused

  269. by what happens.

  270. And so we ask ourselves,

  271. in a sense,

  272. a different type of question

  273. than really noticing

  274. what happens

  275. with the flow of it.

  276. So just look what happens

  277. in verse five

  278. in the first bit of six.

  279. And he could do

  280. no mighty work there.

  281. That means he couldn't

  282. do a miracle.

  283. He could do no mighty work there

  284. except that he laid his hands

  285. on a few sick people

  286. and healed them.

  287. And he marveled

  288. because of their unbelief.

  289. He marveled.

  290. He was gobsmacked,

  291. to use an Irish expression,

  292. at their unbelief.

  293. Now,

  294. what often happens with us

  295. is we start to go off

  296. in a bit of a different direction

  297. as to why Jesus couldn't heal.

  298. But the fundamental thing

  299. to notice first,

  300. I'll talk a little bit

  301. about why he couldn't heal

  302. in quotation marks,

  303. couldn't.

  304. But the really interesting thing

  305. is that even though

  306. he's been publicly rejected,

  307. publicly dismissed,

  308. publicly put down,

  309. publicly shamed,

  310. he's still willing to heal.

  311. You'll notice that.

  312. That's actually the really

  313. important thing to notice.

  314. He's still willing to heal.

  315. Like, in a sense,

  316. what this is just saying to us

  317. is that if Jesus is put down,

  318. dismissed,

  319. rejected,

  320. and shamed,

  321. so will you,

  322. if you have him

  323. as your Savior and Lord.

  324. But love

  325. and speak the truth anyway.

  326. I mean,

  327. in some ways,

  328. that's actually the big message

  329. of this text.

  330. Jesus was rejected.

  331. Jesus was dismissed.

  332. Jesus was shamed.

  333. But his response

  334. was to continue

  335. to bear witness

  336. to the truth

  337. and to seek

  338. to be a,

  339. and to heal

  340. and deliver.

  341. And the lesson is,

  342. we're going to have

  343. the same thing happen to us.

  344. And our response

  345. shouldn't be proud,

  346. anger,

  347. attacking,

  348. but our response

  349. should be

  350. to continue

  351. to witness

  352. to the truth

  353. and to continue

  354. to seek

  355. to be an agent

  356. or to be healing

  357. and act

  358. towards deliverance.

  359. So Jesus

  360. is willing

  361. to heal.

  362. The problem here,

  363. and here's where

  364. people get confused,

  365. it's not

  366. that Jesus,

  367. let's say,

  368. let's say Matt

  369. here is Jesus

  370. and he comes up to me

  371. because he wants

  372. to heal me

  373. because I'm sick.

  374. And so he comes up

  375. on the stage

  376. and says,

  377. okay,

  378. I'm going to heal you.

  379. And, you know,

  380. he, I don't know,

  381. closes his eyes.

  382. If this was Hollywood,

  383. he'd close his eyes,

  384. maybe put his hands up,

  385. you know,

  386. do a little bit of this

  387. or a quivering.

  388. And then he all of a sudden

  389. stops and says,

  390. okay, George,

  391. you got to work with me

  392. here a bit.

  393. Okay,

  394. you got to work with me.

  395. Don't just sort of

  396. stand there

  397. like you're,

  398. you're the,

  399. a horizontal,

  400. a vertical version

  401. of a couch potato

  402. just saying whatever.

  403. You got to work with me.

  404. Okay,

  405. try to,

  406. try to get a little bit pumped.

  407. I need you to get a bit pumped

  408. and a little bit of energy

  409. and then I,

  410. then,

  411. and then I,

  412. and goes back

  413. and,

  414. oh no,

  415. George,

  416. you got to work with,

  417. no,

  418. that's not what's happening at all.

  419. What's happening

  420. is they don't come.

  421. I mean,

  422. you read the gospel,

  423. Jesus doesn't need

  424. people to believe him

  425. to heal them,

  426. but they don't come.

  427. It would be as if I have

  428. a couple of sick people

  429. or in my household,

  430. but I don't want to bring

  431. them out to Jesus

  432. and I don't want to ask

  433. Jesus to come to me.

  434. Why?

  435. Because I,

  436. you know,

  437. who is this guy?

  438. Yeah,

  439. yeah,

  440. yeah,

  441. yeah,

  442. yeah,

  443. yeah,

  444. he does miracles.

  445. Yeah,

  446. yeah,

  447. yeah,

  448. yeah,

  449. he has lots of wisdom,

  450. but good grief,

  451. he's just a carpenter.

  452. Like,

  453. we know him,

  454. like,

  455. he's nothing special,

  456. his mom is nothing special,

  457. his dad was nothing special,

  458. oh,

  459. if we even know

  460. who his dad was,

  461. and,

  462. you know,

  463. and his family's nothing special.

  464. Like,

  465. why do we want to have him

  466. come to our house?

  467. Like,

  468. you know,

  469. just,

  470. you know,

  471. forget about it.

  472. Like,

  473. they don't actually even want

  474. to have him come.

  475. So,

  476. it's not as if their faith

  477. is in any type of way,

  478. or their lack of faith

  479. is a barrier to Jesus' healing,

  480. because all of the healing

  481. comes from him,

  482. none of it comes from them.

  483. But they're uninterested.

  484. They have no belief,

  485. and they just want to reject him.

  486. Well,

  487. how does Jesus continue

  488. to react to it?

  489. Once again,

  490. does he pout,

  491. sulk,

  492. rage,

  493. revenge,

  494. or attack?

  495. We already see

  496. that he was willing

  497. to continue to heal,

  498. but they didn't want him to heal.

  499. And this next bit

  500. of how he responds to it

  501. is actually a very,

  502. very profound meditation

  503. upon the difference

  504. between Christianity and Islam,

  505. and the difference

  506. between Christianity

  507. and Buddhism

  508. and Hinduism as well.

  509. The difference between

  510. Buddhism and Hinduism

  511. and Christianity

  512. is a little bit hard.

  513. In fact,

  514. a lot of people,

  515. when they read this text,

  516. don't actually read the text

  517. or understand it

  518. in a Christian way.

  519. They actually

  520. bring in Buddhist

  521. and Hindu categories

  522. and think that the text

  523. is justifying their categories,

  524. but actually,

  525. it's a rejection.

  526. rejection of the errors

  527. in Buddhism

  528. and Hinduism,

  529. but a deep fulfillment

  530. of the deep desires

  531. of Buddhism

  532. and Hinduism.

  533. And it is a clear rejection

  534. of Islam,

  535. but it is,

  536. in fact,

  537. a fulfillment

  538. of the deeper desire

  539. of those who follow

  540. Islam.

  541. So what do I mean?

  542. Well, let's look.

  543. Look at 6B.

  544. And he went out about,

  545. he went about

  546. among the villages

  547. teaching,

  548. and he called the twelve

  549. and began to send them out

  550. two by two

  551. and gave them authority

  552. over the unclean spirits.

  553. He charged them

  554. to take nothing

  555. for their journey

  556. except a staff,

  557. no bread,

  558. no bag,

  559. no money in their belts,

  560. but to wear sandals

  561. and not put on

  562. two tunics.

  563. A tunic is a,

  564. there's just a long,

  565. it would be like a t-shirt,

  566. but it would be like

  567. that you wear

  568. right next to your skin,

  569. but it would go down

  570. past the knees.

  571. Now,

  572. here's the first thing.

  573. So,

  574. Jesus has been rejected.

  575. His disciples have been,

  576. seen him rejected

  577. and shamed

  578. and put down,

  579. but his response

  580. is he's still willing

  581. to heal.

  582. And his response

  583. is that he's going to go out

  584. and continue to teach

  585. and he's going to continue

  586. to deliver people

  587. from demons.

  588. He's going to continue

  589. to offer to heal.

  590. And not only does he do this,

  591. he now authorizes

  592. and calls the twelve

  593. to do the exact same thing.

  594. So,

  595. how is this,

  596. if you think about it

  597. for a second,

  598. Muhammad was a warrior.

  599. Muhammad was a warrior.

  600. warrior.

  601. And,

  602. and in the Quran

  603. and in the Hadiths,

  604. I mean,

  605. there's a,

  606. the consistent message

  607. of,

  608. of Muhammad

  609. from Allah

  610. is that if you're

  611. in a minority

  612. and you don't have

  613. any power,

  614. then,

  615. then you can sort of

  616. just,

  617. you know,

  618. be like this.

  619. But once you begin

  620. to get some power,

  621. then you,

  622. you need to be a warrior.

  623. You need to,

  624. to arm yourself.

  625. You need to,

  626. you need to attack.

  627. You need to take control

  628. of the situation.

  629. Muhammad was a warrior.

  630. and we see here

  631. the exact opposite

  632. message.

  633. In fact,

  634. what we see here

  635. is rather than

  636. when the time is right,

  637. grab your sword,

  638. is don't even have a staff.

  639. Don't have any money.

  640. Be completely

  641. and utterly powerless

  642. as you go out

  643. to bear witness

  644. to the truth.

  645. And the,

  646. the message about the,

  647. and the contrast

  648. with Buddhism

  649. and Hinduism

  650. is,

  651. you see,

  652. on one hand,

  653. often when people

  654. read this thing,

  655. they think,

  656. okay,

  657. now we're getting

  658. to something

  659. very familiar

  660. because this is

  661. a familiar category

  662. to us.

  663. This is the category

  664. of religion.

  665. In fact,

  666. you know,

  667. what we know

  668. about religious people

  669. is that they like

  670. to dress funny

  671. if they dress at all

  672. and,

  673. and that real religious people,

  674. they often don't like

  675. to eat very much

  676. and they often

  677. don't want to have

  678. any possessions

  679. and,

  680. and they want to,

  681. you know,

  682. do these odd types

  683. of rituals

  684. and they,

  685. they want to,

  686. you know,

  687. they're just very,

  688. very odd

  689. and that's sort

  690. of how you know

  691. that they're very

  692. religious

  693. and,

  694. in fact,

  695. one of the problems

  696. I have

  697. when I talk

  698. to friends

  699. who are,

  700. you know,

  701. enamored with,

  702. or would be Buddhists

  703. or would be Muslim

  704. or come from

  705. a Jewish background

  706. is that when I try

  707. to talk to them

  708. and I try to,

  709. to communicate

  710. that I'm actually

  711. like a very serious

  712. Christian

  713. or a devout Christian,

  714. I mean,

  715. that doesn't mean

  716. I'm always a good Christian

  717. but I try to be devout,

  718. is that I know

  719. that in their mind

  720. they don't really

  721. have a category for it

  722. because if they're Jewish,

  723. well then,

  724. I should be having

  725. like something

  726. that's very distinctive

  727. in my dress

  728. or,

  729. you know,

  730. I should be more

  731. emaciated

  732. or I,

  733. you know,

  734. I should have a,

  735. like,

  736. and often when people

  737. say that they want

  738. to be spiritual

  739. but not religious

  740. is they want to say

  741. we don't want to have

  742. anything to do

  743. with all that

  744. like really,

  745. really weird behavior

  746. but we want to,

  747. we still understand

  748. that there should still

  749. be something like

  750. religious and spiritual

  751. longings and yearnings

  752. and so on one hand

  753. you see

  754. this text looks like

  755. it's putting Jesus

  756. and the Christians

  757. in a familiar type of thing

  758. and people can say

  759. okay,

  760. I understand that

  761. although the next thing

  762. that will go on

  763. in their mind

  764. is Jesus,

  765. George,

  766. if you say you're

  767. a serious Christian

  768. how come you're not like that?

  769. Like,

  770. how come you're sitting here

  771. having a coffee

  772. in the coffee shop

  773. and how come you don't look

  774. like you've starved yourself

  775. to death

  776. or,

  777. you know,

  778. you're not dressed like that

  779. and there's probably

  780. a little bit of a,

  781. they're trying to get

  782. their mind around it

  783. but what's going on

  784. in this text here

  785. isn't that Jesus

  786. is telling them

  787. that they have to learn

  788. detachment from the world

  789. and non-attachment

  790. for the world.

  791. In fact,

  792. it's the complete opposite

  793. of that

  794. because he's sending them

  795. in to the world

  796. and he's sending them

  797. into the world

  798. to heal people

  799. and he's sending them

  800. into the world

  801. not only to heal people

  802. but to deliver

  803. and he's sending them

  804. into the world

  805. to heal people,

  806. to deliver people

  807. and to teach the truth

  808. so he's not at all

  809. telling them

  810. to practice detachment

  811. or non-attachment

  812. or to be some type

  813. of an ascetic

  814. and to be a beggar.

  815. The heart of what

  816. he's telling them

  817. is I'm going to give you

  818. this mission,

  819. I'm calling you

  820. to bear witness

  821. to the truth,

  822. to tell people about me,

  823. to tell people

  824. about the fact

  825. that I have come,

  826. I am the Messiah,

  827. I am the one

  828. who will reconcile

  829. not only the Jewish people

  830. but eventually they'll hear

  831. that I've come

  832. to reconcile all

  833. who put their faith

  834. and trust in me

  835. to reconcile

  836. them to the true

  837. and living triune God

  838. and that I want you

  839. to heal people

  840. and I want you

  841. to deliver people

  842. and I want you

  843. to do that

  844. not because it's

  845. going to be popular,

  846. not because everybody

  847. wants to be your friend,

  848. not because it's accepted

  849. but because that's just

  850. who,

  851. that's just the way

  852. to be properly human

  853. and I am trying

  854. to form you

  855. to be properly human

  856. and to be properly human

  857. you are a person

  858. of the truth

  859. not a person

  860. of the lie

  861. and you are a person

  862. who values healing

  863. and you are a person

  864. who wants to deliver people

  865. and you do that

  866. whether or not

  867. people accept you

  868. or not.

  869. That's just what you do

  870. if you follow me.

  871. And so the message

  872. of, you know,

  873. not the money

  874. and not that

  875. and even this next

  876. little bit

  877. which we're going

  878. to go you,

  879. what they're actually

  880. saying is

  881. just trust me.

  882. Like, trust me.

  883. Like, George,

  884. if you trust me

  885. that I can fit you

  886. for heaven,

  887. if you trust me

  888. that when you die

  889. death is not the end,

  890. neither is hell,

  891. but if you trust me

  892. you will awake

  893. in a new heaven

  894. and new earth.

  895. You will be reconciled

  896. to God

  897. and spend eternity

  898. with the triune.

  899. If you can trust me

  900. on that,

  901. if you trust me

  902. on that,

  903. can you trust me

  904. to care for

  905. some of your needs?

  906. It's a whole other thing

  907. that even if it means

  908. that you end up

  909. being martyred,

  910. it's still

  911. because you're

  912. bearing witness

  913. to the truth,

  914. but for now,

  915. can you just trust me

  916. that I can provide

  917. financially for you?

  918. You see,

  919. in a sense,

  920. for the average

  921. Christian today,

  922. that's part of

  923. the whole thing

  924. about financial

  925. generosity

  926. and tithing.

  927. Nobody,

  928. I can't ever tell you

  929. that if you give

  930. 10% of your money

  931. to the furtherance

  932. of the gospel

  933. and the glorification

  934. of God

  935. that you'll get

  936. more money back

  937. and anybody who says

  938. that to you

  939. is lying,

  940. they're speaking

  941. out of their butt,

  942. not out of the Bible.

  943. But the fact of the matter

  944. is,

  945. is that by doing

  946. something like that,

  947. you're trusting

  948. that God can continue

  949. to meet your needs,

  950. that you won't

  951. go hungry,

  952. you won't be

  953. homeless,

  954. but God will

  955. care for you.

  956. And so what this

  957. is actually teaching

  958. is, in a sense,

  959. the deepest longing

  960. of Hinduism

  961. and Buddhism,

  962. that there's a God

  963. who loves you,

  964. who cares for you,

  965. like he cares for you.

  966. And not that you

  967. have to learn

  968. non-attachment,

  969. but you have to learn

  970. not to make idols

  971. of things

  972. and think that

  973. all of the things

  974. have to be

  975. under your control.

  976. It's not an issue

  977. of attachment,

  978. but control.

  979. And so will you

  980. trust me

  981. to have me

  982. send you out

  983. into the world,

  984. even if you're rejected,

  985. even if you're shamed,

  986. even if people

  987. embarrass you,

  988. even if people

  989. unfriend you,

  990. stop following you

  991. on Instagram.

  992. And when they

  993. stop following you,

  994. they also say

  995. a whole pile

  996. of nasty things

  997. to all of their followers.

  998. And when those

  999. things happen to you

  1000. because you love me,

  1001. continue to trust me.

  1002. Pray for your persecutors.

  1003. Pray for their healing.

  1004. Pray for their deliverance.

  1005. Bear witness

  1006. to the truth.

  1007. Bear witness

  1008. to the truth.

  1009. I am calling you

  1010. to join me

1011. as people of the truth,

1012. not people of the lie,

  1013. and people of life,

  1014. not people of death.

  1015. That is who

1016. I am calling you to be

  1017. because I am

  1018. the God of truth.

  1019. I am true.

1020. I am the God of life.

  1021. I am life.

1022. I am the God of light.

  1023. I am light.

1024. I am the God of love.

  1025. I am love.

1026. I am the God of goodness.

  1027. I am good.

1028. I am the God of mercy.

  1029. I am mercy.

1030. I am the God of justice.

  1031. I am just.

  1032. Bear witness to it.

  1033. And that is partly

1034. what is going on here

1035. in verses 10 and following.

  1036. Verse 10,

1037. and he said to them,

1038. whenever you enter a house,

1039. stay there until you depart from there.

  1040. What that means is,

  1041. don't sort of,

1042. I am going to stay at this person's house

1043. and I am going to milk them for money

1044. and then I am going to stay

  1045. at another person's house,

1046. I am going to milk them for money

1047. and I am going to stay at another person's house,

1048. I am going to milk them for money.

1049. That's what the talk is.

1050. Just be content that your needs are met.

  1051. And verse 11,

1052. and if any place will not receive you

1053. and they will not listen to you

  1054. when you leave,

1055. shake off the dust that is on your feet

1056. as a testimony against them.

1057. This is a type of prophetic act

1058. where they go into a Jewish,

1059. in the culture of the day,

  1060. many Jewish people,

1061. if they left the pagan town,

1062. they would shake the dust off of their feet.

1063. And Jesus is saying here,

1064. you go into a Jewish town

  1065. and they reject you,

1066. shake the dust off your feet.

1067. But the point of that is not,

1068. the point of it is actually to be noticed

  1069. and people say,

  1070. whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,

  1071. what are you doing?

  1072. Right?

  1073. Because you see,

1074. any time in the Bible

  1075. that sin is mentioned,

1076. it's never mentioned to push you away,

1077. it's mentioned to connect with you.

1078. It's mentioned so that you want,

  1079. you go, what?

  1080. What's happening?

  1081. Like, what?

  1082. Like,

  1083. Jesus confronts to connect.

1084. He confronts in the hope

  1085. that you will repent.

  1086. That's why he confronts.

  1087. Never to shame,

  1088. never to belittle,

1089. never to put you down,

  1090. never to humiliate you.

  1091. He confronts to connect.

  1092. Verse 12,

1093. so they went out and proclaimed

  1094. that people should repent

1095. and they cast out many demons

  1096. and anointed with oil,

  1097. many who were sick.

  1098. And he healed them.

  1099. So,

  1100. this little picture

  1101. of how Jesus reacts

1102. is only going to go deeper

1103. as you continue to read

1104. the rest of the gospel.

1105. And the fact that this is actually

1106. what the gospel is all about

1107. is made more and more and more clear.

  1108. It's not as if,

  1109. you know,

1110. sometimes you watch a movie.

  1111. I was just watching,

  1112. you know,

  1113. something and

1114. it was actually sort of

  1115. a very,

  1116. very good thing,

  1117. a British production

  1118. and about a man

  1119. whose son is kidnapped

  1120. and he comes back

  1121. from abroad

  1122. and these things

  1123. that he does

  1124. to help him.

1125. But part of the problem

  1126. with it

  1127. is there's all these

  1128. little plot ends

  1129. that never get,

1130. it's sort of brought up

  1131. to create some tension,

1132. but it never gets tied

1133. into other types of things.

  1134. There's all these things

  1135. that happen

1136. that don't get tied up.

1137. And so the movie's all right,

1138. but it's not as good a movie

1139. or as good a story

  1140. as it could be

1141. if things were tied up.

  1142. Important sort of avenues

  1143. of tension

  1144. or sort of somehow

1145. rather than just being ignored

1146. or it's almost as if

  1147. occasionally the writer,

1148. it looked as if he,

1149. I'll throw this little bit in

  1150. because it will create

  1151. lots of tension

  1152. in the viewer

1153. and then I'll just hope

1154. that the viewer is so stupid

  1155. they don't notice

1156. that we never deal with it

1157. for the rest of the movie.

1158. But that's not what happens

  1159. in the gospel.

  1160. In the gospel,

1161. what we see is that

  1162. this insight about Jesus

  1163. loving people

  1164. and speaking the truth

1165. even after they reject him,

  1166. that rather than it

  1167. just being something

  1168. that's a bit of a plot device

  1169. to make you tense

  1170. and then forgotten,

  1171. it actually gets deeper

1172. as the whole story goes.

  1173. As the story goes,

1174. Jesus will begin to predict

  1175. that people are going

  1176. to reject him.

1177. And yet after he predicts

  1178. that people are going

  1179. to reject him,

  1180. that they're actually

  1181. going to crucify him,

  1182. you don't see him

  1183. then raging,

  1184. sulking,

  1185. pouting,

  1186. you see him continuing

  1187. to speak the truth

  1188. and you see him

  1189. continuing to heal.

1190. And by the end of the story,

1191. the end of the story,

  1192. in a sense,

1193. the whole climax of the story

  1194. is that Jesus dies

  1195. on the cross.

  1196. He's predicted

  1197. he's going to die

  1198. on the cross

1199. and he dies on the cross.

  1200. And the message is,

1201. with the bit that goes around it,

  1202. who is he dying

  1203. on the cross for?

1204. Is he dying on the cross

  1205. for the 11 disciples

  1206. that haven't,

  1207. that loved him

  1208. and trusted him

  1209. and maybe his mother

  1210. at the end

  1211. and that's it

  1212. because I don't like

  1213. anybody else?

  1214. No, he dies

1215. for the people in Nazareth.

1216. He dies for the people

  1217. who reject him.

1218. He dies for the Roman soldiers

  1219. who crucify him.

  1220. He dies for Pilate.

  1221. He dies for Herod.

1222. He dies for the people

  1223. who mock him.

1224. He dies for every single

  1225. human being.

  1226. His response

  1227. to being rejected

  1228. isn't hatred,

  1229. violent revenge.

  1230. It isn't

  1231. that as he sees

  1232. our gobsmacking

  1233. unbelief

  1234. that he rejects us.

  1235. But the story ends

  1236. with him dying

  1237. upon the cross

  1238. for the unworthy,

  1239. for his enemies,

  1240. for the people

  1241. who shame him.

1242. He dies on the cross

  1243. for them.

1244. He dies on the cross

  1245. for me.

  1246. That's what he does

  1247. because he is love.

  1248. And the truth

  1249. of the matter is

  1250. is that we can't

  1251. make ourselves right

  1252. with God

  1253. on our own effort.

1254. The fact of the matter

  1255. is that we need

  1256. a savior,

1257. that we get things wrong

1258. and we can't fix ourselves.

1259. And so this little window

1260. into the love of Jesus,

  1261. even in the face

  1262. of rejection,

  1263. that little window

  1264. that we might not

  1265. even notice

  1266. that a window is

  1267. as the story progresses

  1268. becomes bigger

  1269. and bigger

  1270. and bigger

  1271. and bigger.

  1272. He dies

  1273. for the unlovely

  1274. that we might

  1275. lovely be.

  1276. He dies

  1277. for the unworthy

  1278. that we might

  1279. worthy be.

  1280. He dies

  1281. for the people

  1282. of the lie.

  1283. We might become

  1284. people of the truth.

  1285. He dies

  1286. for the dead

  1287. that we might

  1288. be alive.

  1289. He dies

  1290. for the unjust.

  1291. He pays

  1292. the price

  1293. of our injustice.

  1294. Injustice

  1295. that we might

  1296. be reconciled

  1297. to God.

  1298. That's what he does.

  1299. That's who Jesus is.

1300. So all I can say

  1301. to you,

  1302. friends,

  1303. it is always

  1304. a good time

  1305. to be a follower

  1306. of Jesus.

  1307. It is just

  1308. as good a time

  1309. to be a follower

  1310. of Jesus

  1311. if we face

  1312. persecution

  1313. than if we are

  1314. sort of well-liked

  1315. or accepted.

  1316. It is always

  1317. a good time

  1318. to be a follower

  1319. of Jesus.

  1320. It is the end

  1321. of our longings

  1322. and our yearnings

  1323. and the deep need

  1324. of our soul.

1325. And all I can say

  1326. to any of you

  1327. who are watching

  1328. or any of you

  1329. who are here,

  1330. yes,

  1331. people might not

  1332. like you

1333. if you are a Christian,

  1334. but Jesus is calling

  1335. and inviting you

  1336. to know him

  1337. as your Savior

  1338. and your Lord.

  1339. He was rejected

1340. so you could be accepted.

  1341. And his acceptance

  1342. is worth it.

  1343. His acceptance

  1344. is worth it.

  1345. Please stand.

  1346. Father,

  1347. we give you

  1348. thanks and praise

1349. that we can come together

  1350. to be recharged,

  1351. to recommit.

  1352. Father,

  1353. to hear your word,

  1354. to come before you

  1355. and say,

  1356. Father,

  1357. so much,

  1358. we thank you

  1359. for Jesus.

  1360. I confess before you,

  1361. Father,

  1362. I've had a crappy week.

  1363. I haven't been

  1364. a very good Christian

1365. and I've maybe denied you

1366. or I'm having this big trouble

  1367. or this big doubt

1368. and that we can come

  1369. and know

  1370. that it's not

  1371. because of our worthiness

  1372. that you don't weigh

  1373. our merits,

  1374. that you pardon

  1375. our offenses.

  1376. It's not because

  1377. of our great accomplishments

  1378. that you always see

  1379. our deep need

  1380. and you are

  1381. God's great provision

  1382. for our deep need.

  1383. You are God's

  1384. true provision

  1385. for our great need.

  1386. and we give you

  1387. thanks and praise

  1388. so we can meet

  1389. with brothers and sisters,

  1390. so we can be

  1391. in your presence,

  1392. so we can meet

  1393. with those

  1394. who are curious

  1395. or mocking

  1396. and were skeptical

  1397. and yet have come

  1398. to hear more

1399. and that we can be

1400. and we can be fed

  1401. by your word

1402. and we can pray to you

1403. and pour out our heart,

  1404. Father,

  1405. for the world,

  1406. for healing,

1407. and that we can gather

  1408. around the table

  1409. of the Lord

  1410. to receive grace,

  1411. Father,

  1412. as we remember

  1413. Jesus and his

  1414. death upon the cross

  1415. and his mighty resurrection

  1416. and his coming again.

  1417. Father,

  1418. we thank you

1419. that we can gather again

  1420. to be fed

  1421. and to be nurtured

  1422. and to recharge

  1423. and once again

  1424. to say

  1425. we commit to you,

  1426. we follow you.

  1427. Lord,

  1428. work in us

  1429. that we might be

  1430. people of love,

  1431. not people of hate,

  1432. people of justice,

  1433. not people of injustice,

  1434. people of good,

  1435. not of evil,

  1436. people of the truth,

  1437. not of the lie.

1438. Form us more and more

  1439. and more in this

1440. as we keep our eyes

  1441. and our hearts

  1442. fixed on you,

  1443. Jesus.

1444. We ask all these things

1445. in the name of Jesus,

  1446. God's Son

  1447. and our Savior.

  1448. Amen.
