  1. Father, thank you so much that we, your people, can gather in your church, in your city, in your world,

  2. to listen to your word directed to us that comes to us for our good, for the salvation of many, and for the good of this world.

  3. We ask, Father, that the Holy Spirit would open and prepare our hearts for your word to have its role in our lives,

  4. to bring the repentance and healing and strengthening and hope that we desperately need.

  5. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  6. Please be seated.

  7. So I'm going to take a bit of a risk with you and with you watching online.

  8. And sort of a, it's a confession, actually.

  9. I know that some of you, maybe many of you, pray for me, and I'm very grateful for that.

  10. And I desperately need your prayers because I am a fallen human being.

  11. And I actually, I'll begin to work on my next, the next sermon a week from now.

  12. I begin to work on that on tomorrow, tomorrow morning.

  13. I'll start to work on it.

  14. I work on my sermon a bit every day.

  15. But a week ago Friday, I was sat down to get some work done on my sermon.

  16. I'm doing this, and I'm doing this, and I'm doing this.

  17. And then, and maybe it's because one of you were praying for me, because I'm not the world's, I'm a guy,

  18. which means I'm often not very self-aware, right?

  19. I can often get hangry.

  20. Angry because I'm hungry.

  21. But I'm trying to work on the sermon.

  22. And then I realized I'm not getting anywhere in the sermon.

  23. And the reason I'm not getting anywhere with the sermon is that I was so irate.

  24. I was so irate at what the government had done.

  25. This is just give me some mercy to declare the Emergency Measures Act.

  26. I was so irate.

  27. I could not work on the sermon.

  28. And, you know, pray that I never preach out of anger.

  29. That I never compose or design a sermon out of anger or deliver it out of anger.

  30. Pray that I never do that, because that would not honor Christ.

  31. And I just had to stop.

  32. And it took me well over an hour of just wrestling with it in prayer

  33. to be able to get to a point where I could just begin to work at things.

  34. Some of you are writers.

  35. Some of you are in positions of authority and influence.

  36. And it might very well be your vocation to write about what happened

  37. and to give counsel about what happened.

  38. And that's good and proper.

  39. It's hopefully many of you are in positions in government and business

  40. or the press or the media to write about it.

  41. But it's not the vocation of the pastor of the church

  42. who's going to come up and open the Word of God.

  43. I'm going to give you a lecture on my view about the Emergency Measures Act.

  44. It's not my vocation.

  45. Christians in good conscience can come to different conclusions and nuances about that.

  46. It's not my role.

  47. It isn't my role.

  48. So, you know, I struggled with it in prayer for an hour.

  49. And I came to a place of peace where I just...

  50. Not that I didn't still have moral judgments, but, you know, anger,

  51. for those of you who ever are at all attracted or have a problem with anger,

  52. anger is intoxicating.

  53. Anger is intoxicating.

  54. Those of you who don't get angry or get very afraid of it don't know what I'm talking about.

  55. Those of you who do, you know how intoxicating it can be.

  56. And so I came to a place of peace and was able to work on my sermon.

  57. And I think if you listen to the sermon next week,

  58. I don't think anybody would say that it came out of anger.

  59. And, you know, I was thinking about that this week because, I mean,

  60. there's a variety of biblical texts.

  61. And it wasn't this text that I thought about as I'm trying to wrestle with the whole issue in prayer.

  62. But, in fact, if I had of, this is a very profound...

  63. The text that we're going to look at today is a very profound resource

  64. to help you to, in fact, come to a place of compassion.

  65. Compassion doesn't mean you don't make moral judgments anymore,

  66. but compassion is the context within which you make moral judgments

  67. and judgments about justice,

  68. which is going to actually lead in a direction

  69. where there can be real justice and peace at the end of it.

  70. So I'd like to invite you to look at the text again

  71. and see how this is, in fact, a very profound text to aid us in compassion.

  72. So it's... I'll give you a little bit more context in a moment.

  73. It's Mark chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  74. Hopefully you take your own Bibles and you can follow along with me as you look at it.

  75. It's Mark chapter 6, verse 30.

    Mark 6:30

  76. And I'll give you a bit of context as we go into the text.

  77. But the one thing I'd like to tell you about this miracle,

  78. because it's the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000,

  79. it's the... other than the death and resurrection of Jesus,

  80. which is in all four of the Gospels,

  81. this is the only other miracle which is recorded in all four of the Gospels,

  82. just the resurrection of Jesus and the feeding of the 5,000.

  83. So it obviously made a huge impression on the apostles and the early church,

  84. and it got put, recorded in this ancient biography of Jesus.

  85. So here's how it begins.

  86. Verse 30.

  87. The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.

  88. And if you just go back sort of the beginning of the...

  89. like about 20 verses earlier,

  90. Jesus had sent them out to teach and to heal and to deliver.

  91. And so now they've returned.

  92. And that's what's happened.

  93. Verse 31.

  94. And Jesus said to them,

  95. Come away by yourselves to a desolate place or a solitary place.

  96. That's another very good way to translate it.

  97. And rest a while.

  98. For many were coming and going,

  99. and they had no leisure even to eat.

  100. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place,

  101. a solitary place by themselves.

  102. Now, this is going to be very important,

  103. and it's one of the things which you can't notice in the English,

  104. but it's there in the Greek.

  105. And if you know the Greek, the original language,

  106. you'll understand a little bit about the significance of what's going on.

  107. And up until now, every time there's been mention of a crowd,

  108. there's a particular word that was used in the original language,

  109. except in one occasion, and this is the second occasion so far.

  110. And the word is hoi polloi.

  111. And that, of course, as we know,

  112. not many people know that term anymore,

  113. but it's a term of dismissiveness used by the elites against ordinary people.

  114. The hoi polloi.

  115. What are the hoi polloi?

  116. They're just the hoi polloi.

  117. Well, that's the word which, all the way through this,

  118. when it's talking about the crowds or the many,

  119. that's the word they're using, the hoi polloi, the many.

  120. That's the context.

  121. And this is going to be very, very,

  122. and here, those of you who remember what happened just before this,

  123. it's very, very significant.

  124. Remember, Mark didn't just sort of give you this little,

  125. it's not like he sent you a tweet with no context,

  126. and that's the tweet.

  127. I mean, this would be too long for a tweet.

  128. But he just gives you, you know, an Instagram, you know,

  129. with five different little pictures,

  130. and each one of them has some of this,

  131. and it has no context to anything else.

  132. What's just going on before this is the complete opposite, right?

  133. Herod has met, and who's invited to Herod's birthday party?

  134. Well, the people invited to the Herod's birthday party aren't the hoi polloi.

  135. Who's invited to Herod's birthday party are the leading,

  136. and they're all men, only men,

  137. and they're the leaders of the military,

  138. the nobles, and the rich people.

  139. And probably with included, and that would have been, of course,

  140. yeah, I mean, they're the key influencers,

  141. the people who matter.

  142. So just before this, there's going to be a meal,

  143. but the meal is restricted for only men,

  144. and only those who are military leaders, nobles, and rich.

  145. Jesus is with the hoi polloi.

  146. Jesus is with the hoi polloi.

  147. And the difference between the two stories

  148. is a very, very interesting thing to meditate upon.

  149. I'm just going to point out a few point of things about it as we go on,

  150. but it's a very interesting thing to meditate upon.

  151. How we know what happens to the hoi polloi

  152. in the story with Herod.

  153. Herod kills one of the hoi polloi.

  154. What does Jesus do when they disrupt his plans?

  155. Look at it in verse 33 and verse 34.

  156. Now many, the hoi polloi,

  157. saw them going and recognized them,

  158. that's Jesus and the disciples,

  159. and they ran there on foot from all the town

  160. and got there ahead of them.

  161. And when Jesus went to shore,

  162. he saw a great crowd,

  163. and he had compassion on them,

  164. because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

  165. And he began to teach them many things.

  166. Now, once again, the contrast is very important.

  167. In the story, you might remember,

  168. and if you go back and you read it,

  169. Mark records what goes through,

  170. you know, they're probably drunk,

  171. there's a sensual dance.

  172. The person who's done the sensual dance

  173. is a 12 or 13-year-old girl

  174. who's both Herod's stepdaughter and his niece.

  175. It's a sensual dance that arouses him and the others.

  176. He makes a foolish promise up to half your kingdom.

  177. She asked for the head of John the Baptist.

  178. And Mark records what would have gone through Herod

  179. in his term of self-awareness.

  180. And by his self-awareness,

  181. he can't break his oath in front of all these powerful people.

  182. But the fact of the matter is,

  183. as we all know, that's not true.

  184. Because if Herod's stepdaughter had asked

  185. for three of your fortresses,

  186. he would still have been drunk,

  187. slightly inebriated,

  188. but his eyes would have gotten steely,

  189. his face would have gotten steely,

  190. and he would have said,

  191. honey, you better reconsider what you just asked for.

  192. And given that the political leaders of those times

  193. were not adverse to murdering family members,

  194. she would have probably looked back at her mom,

  195. and her mom would have done this.

  196. And she probably would have said,

  197. could I go back and ask my mom what I should ask for?

  198. But John's part of the hoi polloi,

  199. and the powerful people can kill the hoi polloi.

  200. That is often what life is like in the world.

  201. Putin believes he can take over the Ukraine

  202. and nobody will stop it.

  203. It doesn't matter how many people he kills.

  204. He doesn't want to kill a lot.

  205. He just wants the property and the resources

  206. and the spiritual significance,

  207. and he does.

  208. It's the way of the world.

  209. It's the way of the world.

  210. But Jesus sees the hoi polloi

  211. and has compassion on them and teaches them.

  212. Now, this is a compassion story.

  213. But what you're going to see

  214. is that it's not just a story,

  215. but a window, like a true picture

  216. of what reality is actually like at the deepest level.

  217. Just before the service here,

  218. I use my phone as a timer.

  219. That's why I'm looking down.

  220. I'm not checking new tweets or anything like that.

  221. I'm checking the time.

  222. And if you came and it was off,

  223. you know, when it turns on,

  224. there's a picture of Louise,

  225. and Shane was commenting on it.

  226. And if you saw the picture,

  227. some pictures, you know, you could take it,

  228. and, you know, a police could take the picture,

  229. and they'd be able to find the person.

  230. But it's just a picture.

  231. But some pictures actually communicate

  232. who the person is.

  233. Do you know what I mean?

  234. Like, it actually communicates who they are.

  235. And if you were to see this picture of my wife,

  236. you'd say, that's Louise.

  237. That captures Louise.

  238. The way she smiles, the way she looks,

  239. it just captures her grace and her beauty.

  240. It captures her.

  241. And this story isn't just sort of like Santa Claus for kids,

  242. but in terms of importance of compassion.

  243. And this story captures God,

  244. who's created all things and sustains all things,

  245. and who alone can redeem the world

  246. and will bring in a new heaven and a new earth.

  247. And it reveals that compassion

  248. is deeper than violence and hate,

  249. just as we long for,

  250. that it's deep in the created order

  251. and in the future.

  252. Let's see how that works out.

  253. And just before I say anything else,

  254. before we look at the text,

  255. the way it sets this up

  256. is it's very interesting

  257. that the story,

  258. all these little tiny details in the story

  259. set up the reality of the miracle.

  260. It sets up the reality of the miracle.

  261. So we've already seen it.

  262. Like the first way that it's done it

  263. is that John and Mark hasn't put the God,

  264. like he hasn't sort of said,

  265. I'll just throw a whole pile of miracle stories together.

  266. And then, you know,

  267. but no, no, what actually has happened

  268. is just before this

  269. is the story of Herod killing John the Baptist.

  270. And as I shared last week,

  271. Herod killing John the Baptist,

  272. we know a whole lot of other things about that story.

  273. I shared with you some of the things

  274. about what happened in the subsequent months and years

  275. and everything like that

  276. because one of the most important ancient historians,

  277. Josephus,

  278. was basically writing just after this

  279. and he records a whole pile of things.

  280. Like Herod's an historical person,

  281. John the Baptist is an historical person.

  282. Read Josephus.

  283. Josephus will tell you that Herod has

  284. John the Baptist killed.

  285. This is a story,

  286. a telling of history.

  287. And Mark,

  288. if you just look at it,

  289. Mark goes right from telling you

  290. this historical event

  291. to this historical event

  292. and there's no change in language.

  293. It's still the language of historical reporting.

  294. It doesn't go into,

  295. oh, by the way,

  296. once upon a time

  297. or into language of analogy

  298. or there once was a time

  299. when this happened

  300. or anything like that.

  301. It's the same type of historical language

  302. which is being used.

  303. And it emphasizes

  304. that Jesus and the disciples

  305. go in a boat.

  306. The boat would have carried,

  307. I mean,

  308. there would have been 13 of them

  309. and from what we know of boats

  310. at that time,

  311. it's probably a boat

  312. that would have carried

  313. about 15 people

  314. and there would have been

  315. some room for nets

  316. and everything like that

  317. but it wouldn't have been

  318. in something that would have had

  319. like a big pile of bread

  320. and fish

  321. that could go from here

  322. to the wall.

  323. It wouldn't have had that.

  324. It would have just had room

  325. for them

  326. and for some of their gear

  327. and they go to a solitary place

  328. and they keep saying

  329. they go to a solitary place,

  330. a solitary place,

  331. a solitary place

  332. and it's emphasizing

  333. all of these things

  334. and it's going to continue

  335. on with the rest of the story.

  336. Look how the story goes

  337. and in a sense

  338. it doubles down

  339. on the miracle.

  340. Look at verse 35.

  341. And when it grew late

  342. his disciples came to him

  343. and said,

  344. this is a desolate place,

  345. a solitary place

  346. and the hour is now late,

  347. probably an hour or so away

  348. from sundown.

  349. Send them away

  350. to go into the surrounding

  351. countryside and villages

  352. and buy themselves

  353. something to eat.

  354. You know,

  355. so the,

  356. and note one of the things

  357. that's going to be important

  358. in a moment,

  359. when I try to bring

  360. some of this home

  361. in terms of what it means

  362. for us

  363. and,

  364. but Jesus doesn't rebuke them

  365. for saying this.

  366. The disciples are showing

  367. compassion.

  368. They don't have any food.

  369. There's no food here.

  370. The people are hungry.

  371. The food's run out

  372. and it's going to take

  373. some time

  374. and they're going to

  375. probably have to finish

  376. the journey in the dark

  377. and they're not,

  378. it isn't,

  379. the story isn't taking place

  380. in an orchard

  381. or a vineyard

  382. or a grain field

  383. where people could

  384. take food from it

  385. and so,

  386. once again,

  387. there's compassion

  388. and they're never rebuked

  389. for it by Jesus

  390. and look what happens

  391. in verse 37.

  392. He answered them,

  393. you give them

  394. something to eat.

  395. Now,

  396. it's not a rebuke.

  397. It's one of those times

  398. when the disciples

  399. are thinking,

  400. okay,

  401. that this is how

  402. the story's going to go

  403. and all of a sudden

  404. Jesus does this like this

  405. and it's going

  406. in a completely

  407. different direction

  408. and they said to him,

  409. shall we go and buy

  410. 200 denarii worth of bread

  411. and give it to them to eat?

  412. Now,

  413. 200 denarii is

  414. about nine months.

  415. If you take

  416. Canadian dollars,

  417. you take what

  418. an average worker

  419. would make in Canada,

  420. it's nine months

  421. worth of wages

  422. approximately,

  423. just a little bit less,

  424. less than nine months.

  425. So,

  426. that's a lot of money.

  427. I don't know

  428. about any of you,

  429. but you probably

  430. don't have

  431. nine months worth

  432. of your pay

  433. in your pocket.

  434. But,

  435. I bet we couldn't,

  436. maybe I'm wrong,

  437. maybe a couple of you

  438. have a lot of

  439. hundred dollar bills

  440. on you.

  441. We probably couldn't

  442. take all of the pockets

  443. in the room

  444. and come up with

  445. the equivalent

  446. of nine months wages

  447. for an average

  448. working person.

  449. So,

  450. the disciples

  451. don't have

  452. those resources

  453. and it's going

  454. to take a lot

  455. to eat.

  456. They just pick

  457. out a number.

  458. And verse 38,

  459. he said to them,

  460. how many loaves

  461. do you have?

  462. Go and see.

  463. And when they found

  464. out,

  465. they said,

  466. five and two fish.

  467. Now,

  468. I would say

  469. that for a group

  470. of guys

  471. in our day in world,

  472. five loaves

  473. and two fish,

  474. because they weren't

  475. loaves like this,

  476. they were probably

  477. loaves like that,

  478. wouldn't feed us.

  479. But,

  480. you know,

  481. everybody in those

  482. age were a lot

  483. smaller and they'd

  484. be way,

  485. way skinnier.

  486. And maybe that was

  487. enough for them

  488. to have their meal

  489. so they could worry

  490. about breakfast

  491. the next day.

  492. But it wasn't

  493. that much food.

  494. And so,

  495. once again,

  496. you see,

  497. the story is

  498. emphasizing that

  499. they don't have

  500. any resources

  501. to handle this.

  502. Okay?

  503. I mean,

  504. that's separate

  505. from the fact

  506. that they said,

  507. well,

  508. even when we had

  509. the money,

  510. they could have

  511. gone on and maybe

  512. that's what

  513. happened originally.

  514. Like,

  515. even if we went

  516. to a place

  517. and we could

  518. buy all the

  519. things,

  520. we don't have

  521. wagons to bring

  522. all the bread

  523. and fish,

  524. like,

  525. we just,

  526. we don't have,

  527. it's just impossible,

  528. Jesus,

  529. we just don't have

  530. the resources.

  531. So then,

  532. Jesus does

  533. something here

  534. which is very

  535. significant to

  536. the miracle.

  537. It,

  538. once again,

  539. really emphasizes

  540. the miracleness

  541. of the miracle.

  542. Look what happens

  543. in verse 39

  544. and 40.

  545. he commanded

  546. them all

  547. to sit down

  548. in groups

  549. on the green grass

  550. so they sat

  551. down in groups

  552. by hundreds

  553. and by fifties.

  554. Now,

  555. this is going

  556. to be very,

  557. very important

  558. to the miracle.

  559. If you had

  560. 5,000 plus people,

  561. we don't know

  562. that number

  563. until the end,

  564. but nine months

  565. worth of wages

  566. tells you

  567. that they're

  568. estimating,

  569. this is a lot

  570. of money

  571. to feed this group.

  572. This is a very,

  573. very big group.

  574. But if they're

  575. all standing

  576. and milling around,

  577. that if Jesus

  578. did the miracle,

  579. people,

  580. I mean,

  581. the disciples

  582. might know,

  583. but apart from

  584. the disciples,

  585. the crowd

  586. wouldn't know

  587. because they

  588. might just think

  589. there's a couple

  590. of wagons

  591. of food back there

  592. they can't see

  593. very well

  594. or there's a big

  595. hall of,

  596. a couple of boats

  597. have come in

  598. with lots of fish

  599. and they've been

  600. cooking,

  601. like they can't see.

  602. But when you have

  603. them all sit down

  604. and all sit down

  605. in order groups

  606. and Jesus has done it

  607. and now they're

  608. looking at Jesus,

  609. they're expecting

  610. Jesus to do something,

  611. there's going to be

  612. a very,

  613. very clear view.

  614. There's no pile

  615. of food.

  616. There's no pile

  617. of fish.

  618. There's nothing.

  619. There's only Jesus.

  620. There's only Jesus.

  621. And what do they see?

  622. Verse 41,

  623. taking the five loaves

  624. and the two fish

  625. he looked up to heaven

  626. and said a blessing.

  627. A blessing here

  628. doesn't mean that he

  629. asked God to do a miracle.

  630. The blessing is

  631. probably a two-fold blessing.

  632. You know,

  633. we bless you

  634. and praise you God,

  635. the Father,

  636. creator of all things,

  637. sustainer of all things.

  638. You alone are God,

  639. there is no other.

  640. And bless these,

  641. your people

  642. and your children.

  643. But it's not a prayer

  644. for God to do a miracle,

  645. it's a prayer of blessing,

  646. it's a prayer of adoration

  647. and praise.

  648. And then he broke the loaves

  649. and gave them to the disciples

  650. to set before the people.

  651. And the disciples,

  652. and he divided the two fish

  653. among them all.

  654. And we don't know

  655. if the disciples

  656. were doing this,

  657. rolling their eyes

  658. or with anxiety.

  659. It gives you no emotional

  660. thing going on.

  661. But what they do

  662. is they do it.

  663. And they all ate

  664. and were satisfied.

  665. And they took up

  666. twelve baskets

  667. full of broken pieces

  668. and of the fish.

  669. And those who ate the loaves

  670. were five thousand men.

  671. So it would be interesting,

  672. you know,

  673. if you think about it,

  674. how would you want to film this

  675. if you were making

  676. a movie of it?

  677. So you have this

  678. five thousand plus,

  679. maybe ten thousand people

  680. all watching,

  681. quiet,

  682. maybe chatting

  683. amongst themselves,

  684. but quiet

  685. when he says

  686. the words of blessing.

  687. And they would have seen,

  688. I don't know,

  689. maybe they had

  690. some type of bowl

  691. or some type of basket

  692. or some type of bag

  693. and you would have seen

  694. Jesus take off a hunk

  695. and divide it

  696. amongst them all.

  697. And they would have just seen

  698. that it's not very much.

  699. And you can well imagine,

  700. I mean,

  701. I probably would look

  702. at the faces

  703. of the apostles.

  704. That's probably

  705. what I would film.

  706. As they walk

  707. first here

  708. and to there

  709. and I would take off

  710. just a tiny little bit

  711. and I'd probably be red

  712. faced with embarrassment

  713. and I give

  714. that little bit

  715. and a little bit

  716. and then another little bit

  717. and another little bit

  718. and then another little bit

  719. and another little bit

  720. and then I look down

  721. and the bread

  722. hasn't decreased

  723. and neither is the fish.

  724. And then I give

  725. a little bit

  726. and a little bit

  727. and a little bit

  728. and a little bit

  729. and the bread

  730. and the fish

  731. haven't decreased.

  732. And then I go back

  733. to the beginning

  734. and then

  735. at some point

  736. point in time, there would probably be this joyous, gobsmacked excitement as you give

  737. hunks and hunks of bread and fish to the person after person after person, and the bag never

  738. diminishes, and the bag never diminishes. And not only does the bag not diminish, the

  739. bag is fuller as you go, so that by the end of the whole thing they can gather up 12 baskets

  740. full of fish and bread, and everything about the story emphasizes that there is a miracle.

  741. To be very clear, there is more matter in the universe after the miracle than there was before.

  742. There is more matter in the universe after the miracle than there was before. Only God,

  743. only God, only God can create out of nothing. Only the true and living God described in the

  744. Gospels described in the Old Testament can create matter out of nothing. In fact, one of the reasons,

  745. if the conversation was able to turn to it, one of the reasons a Christian should say to their

  746. Muslim friends, and as many of us know, many of our Muslim friends are vastly more, I was just in a

  747. conversation with a Muslim man just at the end of last, or at the beginning of this week, and gosh,

  748. I mean, he's just very devout and very prayerful. Like, he really is probably a vastly better man than I am.

  749. But one of the things we would say to our Muslim friends is, if God himself walks amongst the created

  750. world and speaks, why would we need to wait six centuries for him to merely send a prophet?

  751. If God himself, God himself comes and walks amongst his creation and speaks and acts,

  752. why on earth would anybody want to wait for a prophet to come later?

  753. Now, obviously some of you are going to say, well, this is completely and utterly impossible,

  754. George. It violates every scientific law, to which I'd say it does not violate a single scientific law,

  755. not one. It does not violate a single scientific law. It violates a misunderstanding of science,

  756. but it doesn't violate science. Well, blah, blah, blah, blah. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. What does the

  757. scientific method say? The scientific method and scientific theory always works on the principle

  758. that you do the experiment and nothing extraneous comes into it. Like, the first law of thermodynamics

  759. is that in a closed system, there's neither, my mother is neither created or destroyed. But that's

  760. the whole point of this, is we Christians, this miracle shows we don't live in a closed system.

  761. I mean, the scientific research is based on the idea that we're just, we're going to work,

  762. we're only looking at natural causes. That's what we're going to look at. We're going to look at

  763. natural causes and natural processes, and we're going to see how things naturally react.

  764. And what this is saying is that it doesn't say, I mean, the second the bread is created,

  765. it can be eaten. The second the bread begins, is created, it begins to get dry at whatever rate

  766. bread gets dry in that type of environment. And if the bread is left on the ground, the bread will

  767. get merged with the ground, and eventually it will go moldy. All of the scientific law is completely

  768. and utterly practiced, but all that happened is that God himself has walked amongst, and he's

  769. created more matter. The second the matter comes into the world, it acts according to it. I mean,

  770. I've shared with you this analogy before, but it's a very important analogy to help you understand it.

  771. I mean, money works in very, very obvious ways, you know. I mean, one of the problems,

  772. I mean, one of the problems is, for those of you who maybe, you know, you check the money at the end

  773. of the service, and you do your bank balances, it can't just be within a dollar. Like, it has to be

  774. correct to the penny. I mean, that's just how, that's how numbers work. Like, you can't have one

  775. person say, oh, you know, I got, you know, $400, I got $350. That's close enough. No, it's not close

  776. enough, because that's not the way money works, right? And so, you know, money just works. You know,

  777. I have a 20, and you add a 20, you add a 20, it gets you sick, it gets you three $20 bills,

  778. that's $60. That's how it works. And so, imagine, you know, that I had far more financial resources

  779. than I have, and one of my children wants to buy a house, and they can't buy a house because they

  780. don't have the financial resources or the credit rating, et cetera, et cetera, to do it. So, my wife

  781. and I decide that we will, I mean, all the money will, in a sense, come from them, but we will,

  782. in effect, become a co-signer on the mortgage. And we say to our son, or we say to our daughter,

  783. that part of the condition of that, by the way, is that, you know, the bank account that you have

  784. the mortgage on, that we have a sign and authority that too, right? And then one day, and money works,

  785. just by money works, they're making X number of dollars, and X number of dollars, you know,

  786. works on the mortgage, and it works on the fractions, and the percentages, and all of that,

  787. and that's just how it works, and we can see by looking at that and another thing that our son

  788. or daughter is in some type of financial distress. And so, one day, Louise and I, we talk about it,

  789. and we decide that we just want to bless our kids, so we put $10,000 extra in the bank account.

  790. Well, has that violated the rules of math? No. Has it violated the way money works? No.

  791. That extra $10,000 is now in there. All of the other equations all just instantly change, right?

  792. And that's exactly what's going on here. In fact, if you could help the first point,

  793. here's the thing which is going on in the story, okay? Especially, I'm going to say it,

  794. and then I'll explain why I put it in this way. And I'm just going to add, up there,

  795. it doesn't say strong hand. I realized afterwards I should add that, because it's actually even better.

  796. The strong hand of love that made the world is the same strong hand of love that sustains the world,

  797. is the same strong hand of love that was nailed to the cross to redeem his fallen world,

  798. and is the same strong hand of love that will beckon and welcome his redeemed children

  799. into the new heaven and the new earth.

  800. I mean, that's what you're seeing when you look at this, because it's going to be the same hands

  801. that breaks the bread and distributes it. It's the same hands that will be nailed to the cross.

  802. Very same hands.

  803. And by God, the creator of all things, because only God can make something matter out of nothing,

  804. only God can do that. What we are actually seeing. Remember I said that this story,

  805. you know how Shane looked at the picture of Louise and said,

  806. that's a good picture of Louise, like that captures Louise.

  807. And what this story is telling us is this story captures God,

  808. and it captures the deeper, deepest reality.

  809. The world came into being not as an accident,

  810. not as a tragedy, and not because the gods wanted slaves,

  811. or because God needed somebody to praise him.

  812. It was God's strong hand of love that created the world.

  813. And I know there is famine in the world, and there's hunger in the world,

  814. and we all know that those things are wrong, and that the world is broken.

  815. And that's a different part of the story as to how the world became broken,

  816. but it wasn't broken by God, it was broken by human beings,

  817. and continues to be broken by human beings.

  818. But the fact of the matter is, is that whenever we eat,

  819. and whenever there's a good harvest,

  820. and whenever we have the clean rivers, and the rain, and all of that type of stuff,

  821. what you are actually seeing is the strong hand of love sustaining all things.

  822. The same strong hand of love that created all things

  823. is the same strong hand that sustains all things,

  824. and provides for us today the coffee, and the tea,

  825. and the milk, and the cereal, and the bacon, and the eggs,

  826. and the veggie bacon that we ate today.

  827. And it's the same strong hand of love that is nailed to the cross.

  828. And it will be that same strong hand of love

  829. that if we die before he returns,

  830. those who are redeemed in Jesus will close their eyes

  831. in the sleep of death,

  832. and wake in the new heaven and the new earth

  833. to the same strong hand of love,

  834. waving in welcome, and beckoning you in.

  835. You see, compassion

  836. is deep.

  837. It is deeper

  838. the violence of an invasion of Ukraine,

  839. the persecution of Christians

  840. in Nigeria,

  841. the persecution of Christians

  842. in many other groups in China.

  843. Our basic intuition

  844. that that looks strong

  845. but is ultimately doomed

  846. is shown to be true,

  847. a true intuition

  848. in light of the gospel.

  849. True and living God

  850. has compassion on the hoi polloi

  851. and gives them the dignity

  852. of feeding them

  853. and caring for them.

  854. In fact, that's actually one of the things

  855. which is so important about this story.

  856. See, I think many people

  857. will look at something like this

  858. and say,

  859. well, George, I mean,

  860. that's really a nice story.

  861. But if you were to know my story,

  862. you would know that

  863. I am always the left out.

  864. I am always the forgotten.

  865. I am always the butt of jokes.

  866. I am always the ignored.

  867. I am always the lonely.

  868. I am always the one

  869. who does not matter.

  870. One of the things

  871. which is so wonderful

  872. is what does this

  873. whole story focus on?

  874. Apart from Christ,

  875. it focuses on the hoi polloi,

  876. the people who don't matter.

  877. And all I can say is

  878. that Jesus looks at you

  879. and he says,

  880. you matter to me.

  881. You matter to me.

  882. And this good news

  883. that George is just talking about,

  884. that good news is for you.

  885. Your days have been the forgotten.

  886. I mean, that might not end

  887. on this earth,

  888. but I can tell you

  889. that from all eternity

  890. you matter to me

  891. and you will matter

  892. into eternity with me.

  893. And for us,

  894. just a couple of points

  895. in closing

  896. in terms of what it means

  897. for us to hear this story

  898. and to receive it.

  899. If you could put up

  900. the next point,

  901. that would be great.

  902. We're to receive

  903. the good news

  904. about the person,

  905. work, and promises

  906. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  907. And as we receive it,

  908. and as it becomes

  909. a deeper part of who we are,

  910. as it becomes clearer

  911. and clearer

  912. what Jesus,

  913. who he is,

  914. and the significance

  915. of the fact that

  916. you see,

  917. if you think about it,

  918. it's only if the creator

  919. of all things,

  920. only the creator

  921. of all things

  922. could die

  923. for the whole creation,

  924. could die for the rich

  925. and the poor,

  926. the gay and the straight,

  927. the black and the white,

  928. the Asian,

  929. the people from India,

  930. from all the different cultures,

  931. people living in feudal times

  932. and pagan times

  933. and remote tribes

  934. and powerful people

  935. and unpowerful people

  936. and handicapped people

  937. and people with spectacular

  938. physical and mental abilities.

  939. It's only the creator

  940. of all that could die

  941. for all.

  942. And it's only the creator

  943. of all who knows all

  944. that his death for all

  945. could be for all

  946. of who you are.

  947. That by the time

  948. you go from this story

  949. to the cross

  950. and then the resurrection,

  951. you realize that Jesus

  952. has done it all.

  953. and that all we can do

  954. is begin to live out of

  955. the truth

  956. of what he has done for us.

  957. Not live to attain

  958. something from him

  959. but to live out of the truth

  960. of his compassion for you.

  961. The truth that he looks

  962. at George and says,

  963. George,

  964. I am not weighing your merits.

  965. I never weighed them

  966. for a moment.

  967. I mean, George,

  968. how could I weigh your merits?

  969. Didn't you just tell everybody

  970. how irate you were

  971. a week ago

  972. that you couldn't

  973. even function?

  974. You should be so glad

  975. that I do not count

  976. your merits

  977. because, George,

  978. you would,

  979. you'd be up a creek,

  980. you know,

  981. the type of creek

  982. you go up without a paddle.

  983. That would be you, George.

  984. But no,

  985. I've done it all.

  986. I'm calling you

  987. to live out of

  988. what I have done

  989. and what I have promised.

  990. And so receive

  991. the good news

  992. about the person

  993. and work

  994. and promises

  995. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  996. and be formed.

  997. and his compassion

  998. for the hoi polloi.

  999. We are to be formed

  1000. by Christ,

  1001. not by Herod.

  1002. The world will try

  1003. to form us

  1004. into Herod.

  1005. But as the gospel

  1006. becomes more real,

  1007. it should lead us

1008. to have a great compassion

  1009. for the hoi polloi

1010. and not just the hoi polloi

  1011. for our own city,

  1012. but the hoi polloi

  1013. in Guatemala.

  1014. Hoi polloi,

  1015. the forgotten refugees

  1016. and the forgotten wars.

1017. And then one final thing,

1018. if you could put up

  1019. the final point.

  1020. There's a profound question

  1021. in this text

  1022. and a profound thing

  1023. that takes place

  1024. in this text.

  1025. And, you know,

1026. often it's when we think about it,

1027. we see it and go,

  1028. oh yeah,

  1029. but you see,

1030. part of what the gospel does

  1031. and the Bible does

  1032. in forming us

  1033. is it forms us

  1034. without us necessarily

  1035. realizing it.

  1036. But in a sense,

  1037. this question is given

1038. to us all the time.

  1039. We see a need,

  1040. like I see a need.

  1041. We're hoping to bring

1042. John Owen as an intern

1043. and part of what we want to do

  1044. is try to reboot

  1045. our ministry

  1046. to the university

  1047. and we can look

  1048. at the university

1049. and say we would love

  1050. to begin to have

  1051. a ministry once again

  1052. to university students

1053. once they really open up

  1054. and not just Ottawa,

  1055. you down the road

  1056. for Carlton.

  1057. And you know,

  1058. at the other hand,

  1059. where we meet

  1060. on a Sunday morning,

  1061. we could also say,

1062. and maybe he at some point

  1063. in time said,

1064. we need to have a heart

  1065. for all the embassies

1066. or we need to have a heart

1067. for all of the new Canadians

1068. and all of the poor

  1069. and those afflicted

  1070. and in danger

  1071. of gang violence

1072. or maybe he's calling us

  1073. to have a heart

  1074. for the arts

  1075. and entertainment

  1076. and bar world

1077. or maybe he's calling us

  1078. to have a heart

  1079. for Parliament Hill

1080. and all the civil servants

  1081. which will eventually

  1082. return at least occasionally

  1083. to the office.

1084. And we can look at it

  1085. and say,

1086. we don't have the resources

1087. to do any of that.

  1088. And Jesus said,

  1089. yeah, that's what

  1090. the story's about.

  1091. You don't.

1092. You don't have the resources.

  1093. You never,

1094. you're never going to have

  1095. the resources.

  1096. Like in a sense,

  1097. stop thinking about

  1098. your resources.

  1099. I mean,

1100. we have to pass budgets

  1101. and I'm not saying

  1102. we should pass

  1103. a $10 million budget.

  1104. That would be called

  1105. presumption.

  1106. But you see,

  1107. you do not have

  1108. the resources

1109. to feed the hoi polloi,

  1110. but you can trust

1111. and do what the one

  1112. who can feed

  1113. the hoi polloi

  1114. tells you to do.

  1115. See,

  1116. isn't that what's going on

  1117. in the story?

  1118. The disciples

  1119. don't have the resources

1120. to feed the hoi polloi.

  1121. What does Jesus

  1122. ask them to do?

1123. Take what I've given you

  1124. and just start

  1125. giving it out.

  1126. And the disciples

  1127. had nothing to do

  1128. whatsoever with the miracle.

  1129. It was all God.

  1130. It was all Christ.

1131. It was all his grace.

1132. It's always only his grace.

1133. All things come of you

  1134. and of your own

  1135. have I given you

1136. and there is no other way

1137. to live the Christian life.

1138. All things come of you

  1139. and of your own

  1140. have I given you.

1141. And that's the means of grace.

1142. You trust him at his word

  1143. and you take those

  1144. small steps of faith,

  1145. maybe with faith,

  1146. which is this,

  1147. the distance between

1148. my finger and my thumb.

  1149. You know,

  1150. but taking a thing

  1151. off of Nightbird

1152. who died over the last week,

  1153. some of you know

  1154. who I'm referring to

1155. and if you've seen that thing

  1156. in America's Got Talent,

  1157. I'm sort of playing

  1158. with what she said

  1159. when afterward she said

  1160. she only had a 2% chance

  1161. of survival

  1162. but she says

  1163. with this big smile

  1164. 2% is not nothing

1165. and I wish you all knew

  1166. how wonderful it was.

1167. And all I can tell you

1168. is if you have faith

  1169. this much,

  1170. that much faith

  1171. is in nothing

  1172. and I wish I could only

1173. tell you how wonderful it is.

  1174. It's the difference

  1175. between heaven and hell.

  1176. It's the difference

1177. between being used by God

  1178. and not.

1179. Your faith can be this small

  1180. but it's wonderful.

  1181. Please stand.

  1182. Let's bow our heads

  1183. in prayer.

1184. And if there's anyone here

1185. or any who are watching,

1186. if you feel a bit

  1187. of a pressure

  1188. that maybe

  1189. you're not quite sure

  1190. but you know

  1191. it's directed towards Christ,

  1192. I can tell you

  1193. that what it is

  1194. is if you've never

  1195. actually just acknowledged

1196. that you want to belong

  1197. to Christ

  1198. then that's Jesus

  1199. calling you.

1200. And all I can say

1201. is there's no better time

1202. than just to turn to him

  1203. in prayer

  1204. and say,

  1205. Jesus,

1206. I want you to be

1207. my Savior and my Lord

  1208. and I thank you

  1209. that you will never

  1210. let me go.

  1211. And you know

  1212. how terrible

  1213. and crummy I am

  1214. at keeping my commitments.

  1215. I just give myself

  1216. into your hands.

  1217. Never let me go.

  1218. There's no better time

1219. than today to pray that.

1220. And there's no better time

1221. for us to recommit to that.

1222. Not that we have to become

1223. Christians over and over again

1224. but every one of us

  1225. needs to recommit

  1226. and say,

  1227. yeah,

1228. I've had an angry week

  1229. or I've had a self-indulgent week

  1230. or I've had a greedy week

1231. or I've had an envious week

1232. and I am so glad

1233. I can come and be

  1234. in your presence,

  1235. God,

  1236. and receive grace

  1237. from you again

1238. because I need it again

  1239. and again and again.

1240. And I need to know

  1241. my weakness

1242. and I need to know

1243. I need to be formed

  1244. in compassion.

1245. I need to be formed

  1246. in compassion.

  1247. So let's pray.

  1248. Father,

  1249. thank you for Jesus.

  1250. Thank you that God,

  1251. the Son of God,

  1252. came and walked

  1253. among and amid

  1254. his fallen creation.

1255. Thank you that he is

  1256. truly Emmanuel.

  1257. He was truly Emmanuel,

  1258. God with us.

  1259. That he came,

  1260. Father,

  1261. and revealed

  1262. at the depths

  1263. of your compassion

  1264. and love and care

  1265. for us.

1266. That he died for us

  1267. as our Savior.

1268. That he is the one

1269. who is our hope of glory.

  1270. That he alone

  1271. is the one

  1272. who has done everything

1273. that has to be done

1274. to make us right with you

1275. and fit us for heaven.

  1276. And Father,

1277. we ask that these stories

  1278. and Jesus

  1279. and who he is,

  1280. that they would become

  1281. more and more real

  1282. to our hearts

1283. so that they would form us.

  1284. Father,

1285. we don't want to be

  1286. people of anger.

1287. We do want to be

  1288. people of compassion.

1289. We want to be people

  1290. whose compassion

  1291. doesn't overwhelm

  1292. their justice

  1293. or their truth

  1294. or the sense

  1295. of right and wrong.

  1296. But Father,

  1297. we want to approach

  1298. these things

  1299. out of compassion

  1300. and out of being

  1301. just resting in you.

  1302. And Father,

1303. we ask that your Holy Spirit

  1304. would move and work

  1305. in us as individuals

1306. and us as a congregation

1307. that that would be true of us.

  1308. And Father,

1309. help us to be attentive

1310. to how you would have us

1311. minister to the hoi ploi

  1312. of the world

  1313. for your great glory,

  1314. trusting that you would

  1315. provide the resources

1316. as we step out in faith.

1317. And we ask all these things

1318. in the name of Jesus

1319. and all God's people said,

  1320. Amen.
