  1. 11, as we think about the King's story and ours.

  2. Probably if you are paying attention to the news, you would have recognized once again

  3. that still today there is a lot of royal interest. We had that rather strange, rather sad, I think,

  4. story of so much attention being given to the royal Mother's Day photo. You know, that little

  5. bit of editing that generated days and days of media interest and speculation and chatter.

  6. In the absence of the princess, so much misinformation and misunderstanding was used to fill the vacuum.

  7. Thinking about that story this week perhaps helps us, in a sense, to appreciate some of the royal

  8. expectation there was as the crowds were heading to the festival in Jerusalem in that scene that we

  9. just read in Luke chapter 19. We have been following a crowd at fever pitch, waiting for the Messiah King.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  10. Is Jesus the one? And we have seen so much misunderstanding about the kind of King Jesus is and the timing of His kingdom.

  11. Now, we may or may not have paid any attention or be particularly bothered about royal stories in the press,

  12. but I would suggest that we all need to listen as King Jesus tells the story of God's King.

  13. Because in this little story, we have an explanation for history and how history will end,

  14. and we have revealed from Jesus our purpose as people until that point.

  15. This story, if we hear it well, will encourage us to live well as we mind the gap.

  16. You know, if you visit London and you're on the tube, and as the tube is drawing into the station,

  17. you hear that voice announce, please mind the gap.

  18. Now, watch your step as you continue on your journey as you leave the train.

  19. Well, the story Jesus tells strikes a similar note.

  20. He encourages the crowds and He encourages us to mind the gap between Jesus' first coming

  21. and His second coming.

  22. And again, what we see is that the timing of Jesus' return is unclear,

  23. but the reality that He will return is certain.

  24. And we are to mind the gap in the sense of being careful how we live, how we journey through this life.

  25. We have to be careful about our response to King Jesus and His summons for us to be servants.

  26. The story tells us that God's King has come, that His kingdom will come,

  27. and that His kingdom must grow.

  28. It's a story we all need a healthy interest in, a story that reminds us to mind the gap.

  29. Let's think, first of all, about the king's story, the story about a king.

  30. Perhaps you are familiar with the famous quote,

  31. those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes.

  32. Well, did you know, I discovered this this week,

  33. Jesus bases this parable on a famous event in history.

  34. This was living memory for the people in Judea, Israel, Jerusalem at the time.

  35. So in 4 BC, and this is history, Herod the Great died.

  36. And when he died, he divided his kingdom between three of his sons.

  37. And to his son called Archelaus, he was given the title King of Judea.

  38. And so Archelaus, when the will was read, then made the procession to Rome to claim that title,

  39. to claim kingship.

  40. But as he traveled, a delegation of 50 people from Judea followed him

  41. to go to the Roman emperor to say,

  42. we don't want this guy as king.

  43. He is unfit for service.

  44. And so what they expected to be routine actually took a really long time.

  45. But the upshot was,

  46. Archelaus was crowned king.

  47. And he did return to Judea as king.

  48. And he came and he dealt very severely with those who opposed his claims.

  49. Do we hear the parallel?

  50. Hear what Jesus is doing?

  51. Now Jesus is not saying,

  52. my character is the same as Archelaus.

  53. Absolutely not.

  54. Because Archelaus was a terrible king, an awful king.

  55. And Jesus is a wonderful king.

  56. But he is saying,

  57. my circumstances follow that pattern.

  58. Follow that story and history.

  59. Now before we get to the story,

  60. why does Jesus tell it?

  61. So sometimes Jesus tells stories

  62. and we're not always invited to know what was the context.

  63. Why did he choose to say it?

  64. But here we are led to understand why.

  65. Verse 11,

  66. Jesus went on to tell them a parable

  67. because, two things,

  68. he was near Jerusalem

  69. and the people thought that the kingdom of God

  70. was going to appear at once.

  71. So he's coming to the climax of his journey to Jerusalem

  72. and the crowds are hoping,

  73. well, if Jesus is the Messiah King,

  74. then he's going to be crowned in glory.

  75. His kingdom is going to come now.

  76. Our enemies are going to be defeated.

  77. We're going to live in a renewed promised land

  78. and it's going to be peaceful.

  79. And Jesus comes to say the reality is different.

  80. Now he has said to them that his kingdom is now.

  81. We've heard that on the journey.

  82. For example, in chapter 17 and verse 21,

  83. nor will people say of the kingdom,

  84. here it is or there it is

  85. because the kingdom of God is in your midst.

  86. So he's quite happy to say, yes, the kingdom is now.

  87. But he also invites us to recognize

  88. the kingdom has not fully yet come.

  89. It will not be final glory right away.

  90. So just like every king, Jesus will ascend,

  91. though in the first instance,

  92. Jesus will ascend across

  93. before ascending to the throne of glory.

  94. When Jesus arrives in Jerusalem,

  95. he will be crowned,

  96. but it will be a crown of thorns,

  97. not a crown of gold that he will wear.

  98. He will be greeted by great crowds,

  99. but those crowds will turn and cry,

  100. crucify him.

  101. We have no king but Caesar.

  102. He will win a victory,

  103. but that will be a spiritual victory

  104. over Satan and sin and death

  105. by his sacrificial death on the cross.

  106. So he needs them to know

  107. that the reality is different.

  108. So let's follow the king's story.

  109. Verse 12, we have a king who departs.

  110. A man of noble birth went to a distant country

  111. to have himself appointed king and then to return.

  112. And so the idea of going to a distant country

  113. implies this is going to take a while.

  114. There's going to be delay.

  115. Jesus teaches that.

  116. His kingdom is not coming.

  117. His return is not immediate.

  118. His authority is clear, though.

  119. The end of the story is never in doubt.

  120. He is going to be crowned

  121. and he is going to return.

  122. Jesus has been preparing his followers

  123. and us as we've listened for his departure.

  124. So ever since Jesus went up a mountain

  125. with James and Peter and John

  126. and shone with the glory of God,

  127. he spoke to them of his departure.

  128. He was going to leave.

  129. His departure involved his suffering and his death.

  130. And it involved his resurrection.

  131. And it involved his ascension

  132. to the throne of heaven.

  133. Now Jesus knows the response

  134. of many to him as king.

  135. Verse 14,

  136. his subjects hated him

  137. and sent a delegation to say,

  138. we don't want this man to be our king.

  139. And so we've seen on the journey

  140. and we'll see at the cross

  141. that he is the perfect king

  142. of perfect love,

  143. of absolute authority,

  144. of the kingdom and the glory of God

  145. that he brings.

  146. And yet he was rejected

  147. and he is rejected

  148. and he will be rejected

  149. by many throughout history.

  150. Sad reality.

  151. So the king departs.

  152. As the king departs,

  153. we also discover in verse 13

  154. that the king commands,

  155. he called ten of his servants

  156. and gave them ten minas.

  157. Put this money to work

  158. until I come back.

  159. Again, there's those two elements,

  160. ten servants, ten minas.

  161. They're told,

  162. put my money to work

  163. and do that until I come back.

  164. So they are going to be working.

  165. And again, verse 14 is in the background.

  166. There are going to be those

  167. who are serving the kingdom of Jesus

  168. who are going to be working for him

  169. while there will be others around them

  170. who say,

  171. we don't want him as king

  172. and we don't want to receive him

  173. or his message.

  174. So the kingdom will be opposed

  175. and the kingdom will grow.

  176. Do we recognize that?

  177. As true in our day as it was back then.

  178. So we have the same call.

  179. The church is to be doing the work of the king

  180. until the king's return.

  181. That's our purpose.

  182. It's our duty as Christians.

  183. We're doing the king's work.

  184. We have the promise of his presence,

  185. his power, his spirit,

  186. but we also know

  187. that we will face opposition

  188. and there is spiritual battle.

  189. Jesus prepares us for it,

  190. for us at that in the parable.

  191. So the king departs,

  192. the king commands.

  193. Then notice the king returns,

  194. verse 15.

  195. He was made king, however,

  196. and returned home.

  197. So remember that opposition.

  198. We don't want this king.

  199. It is to no effect.

  200. The king is crowned.

  201. He does receive glory,

  202. does have authority.

  203. And so Jesus is preparing us

  204. for this reality

  205. that as he approaches the cross,

  206. death is not the end for Jesus

  207. or for his mission,

  208. for his kingdom.

  209. Opposition,

  210. rejection

  211. does not stop the plan of God.

  212. Jesus will take the throne of heaven.

  213. That's where he's sitting right now,

  214. ruling and reigning over the universe

  215. and over the church,

  216. and he will return one day

  217. to draw history to an end,

  218. to establish the kingdom of God

  219. on this earth,

  220. to establish his final

  221. and ultimate victory

  222. over all the forces of evil,

  223. and God will dwell

  224. with his people forever.

  225. The king returns.

  226. When the king returns,

  227. we also discover

  228. the king judges.

  229. It's the bulk of the story,

  230. isn't it,

  231. from verse 15

  232. down to 27.

  233. In verse 15,

  234. then he sent for the servants

  235. to whom he'd given the money

  236. in order to find out

  237. what they had gained with him.

  238. So we are invited to imagine

  239. here is the king

  240. on his throne,

  241. and here is a day of reckoning.

  242. It's judgment day.

  243. And as the servants come,

  244. we see two categories in view.

  245. We find those

  246. who are described

  247. in verse 16 and 19

  248. as good and trustworthy.

  249. They have put the money to work.

  250. They have kept going

  251. until the king came back.

  252. And the result is

  253. they are given honor

  254. and responsibility

  255. in the kingdom,

  256. sharing in the king's rule,

  257. responsibility for ten cities

  258. or five cities.

  259. But then there's another judgment,

  260. isn't there?

  261. Verse 22,

  262. the master speaks to one

  263. who is described

  264. as a wicked servant,

  265. the one who doesn't work,

  266. the one who doesn't do anything

  267. with what has been given to him

  268. from the king.

  269. And we discover

  270. he loses everything

  271. and ultimately

  272. is given a sentence of death.

  273. So Jesus,

  274. as he has spoken to us

  275. in the gospels,

  276. announces that the father

  277. has given him authority

  278. to judge all people.

  279. And he will reward some

  280. with salvation,

  281. those who receive him by faith,

  282. those who honor him

  283. in their lives,

  284. those who are ready

  285. to serve him

  286. with the grace

  287. that he provides.

  288. But others

  289. will know punishment

  290. and condemnation,

  291. Jesus says.

  292. Those who reject him

  293. as king,

  294. those who rebel

  295. against his will

  296. and his word,

  297. those who are guilty

  298. of treason.

  299. And so Jesus tells us

  300. this story

  301. because we are invited

  302. to learn

  303. from history.

  304. Just as the people

  305. in Jesus' day

  306. could learn from

  307. the story of Archelaus

  308. since he parallels

  309. with Jesus' own story,

  310. we are invited

  311. to see Jesus

  312. is the king,

  313. God's king.

  314. He has departed,

  315. he is now in heaven,

  316. but he will return

  317. with glory

  318. after a delay.

  319. Only the father knows

  320. how long

  321. that will be

  322. and we are invited

  323. to receive him

  324. today.

  325. We're also reminded

  326. in this parable

  327. about how history

  328. will end.

  329. History will end

  330. with a bang

  331. and not a whimper.

  332. But that bang

  333. will not be the bang

  334. of an atomic bomb.

  335. It will not be the bang

  336. of an asteroid

  337. colliding with the earth,

  338. some of those

  339. fearful expectations

  340. that people might have.

  341. It's the loud thunder

  342. that announces

  343. the returning

  344. of the king.

  345. It's the trumpet blast

  346. that says,

  347. the king of kings

  348. and the lord of lords

  349. has come

  350. to establish

  351. his kingdom

  352. on the earth.

  353. And the teaching

  354. of Jesus

  355. and the teaching

  356. of the Bible

  357. reminds us also

  358. that history

  359. is working

  360. towards a certain end.

  361. It is not chaos,

  362. it is Christ

  363. who is in control.

  364. And there's a wonderful

  365. invitation in that,

  366. I think,

  367. to trust the one

  368. who sits on the throne,

  369. to trust the one

  370. who rules over history

  371. and who will rule

  372. for all eternity,

  373. to place our hope

  374. in him,

  375. to pray,

  376. your kingdom come,

  377. your will be done.

  378. But this parable

  379. also reminds us

  380. that all through history

  381. we're going to see

  382. these opposite responses

  383. to King Jesus.

  384. And we will see them

  385. in our own heart.

  386. And what we need

  387. to understand

  388. is that our response

  389. to Jesus

  390. determines

  391. our eternal destiny.

  392. That's the King's story.

  393. But I want to think

  394. just for a few minutes

  395. about the King's treasure.

  396. So last,

  397. maybe some of you,

  398. if you were here

  399. on Sunday evening,

  400. you might be thinking,

  401. I feel like you told us

  402. this story last week.

  403. I had a panic

  404. late on Sunday night.

  405. I usually,

  406. on Sunday night,

  407. think about what's coming

  408. next Sunday.

  409. I was like,

  410. oh, no,

  411. it's the same story.

  412. This is going to be bad.

  413. We're going to have

  414. the same sermon.

  415. But it's not the same story

  416. that we looked at.

  417. And actually,

  418. one of the things

  419. that makes it so different

  420. is the money.

  421. And I'm going to show you that.

  422. If you weren't here,

  423. you might be thinking,

  424. why is he even bothered?

  425. But, you know,

  426. there's some stories

  427. in some movies

  428. where money or treasure

  429. becomes central

  430. to the plot.

  431. Maybe you've read

  432. Treasure Island

  433. and you realize

  434. what that treasure does

  435. to various characters

  436. in that book.

  437. Or you think about

  438. the Ring of Power

  439. in Lord of the Rings

  440. and how central

  441. that becomes

  442. to the plot.

  443. Well, Jesus

  444. tells us this story

  445. and he told similar stories

  446. where the money

  447. becomes an important part

  448. of the storyline.

  449. I'm going to show you

  450. how this story

  451. was different

  452. from the one

  453. that we looked at

  454. in Matthew 25,

    Matthew 25:14–30

  455. verse 14 to 30.

  456. There's the parable

  457. of the talents.

  458. And there was a key

  459. difference there

  460. because there was still

  461. a king

  462. and there were still servants

  463. and there were gifts

  464. that were given.

  465. But one servant

  466. got ten talents,

  467. representing a huge amount

  468. of money.

  469. Somebody got five talents

  470. and somebody just got one.

  471. So, they were given

  472. different amounts

  473. according to their abilities.

  474. Now, that was Matthew 25.

  475. What about here?

  476. Look with me at verse 13.

  477. He called ten of his servants

  478. and gave them ten minas.

  479. Okay?

  480. Ten servants

  481. and they all get

  482. the same amount.

  483. The same treasure

  484. is given to them all.

  485. Now, that's significant.

  486. What does it mean?

  487. Jesus is telling us

  488. that everybody

  489. that listens to him

  490. receives the same good news.

  491. The good news

  492. of God's king

  493. and his coming kingdom

  494. of grace.

  495. That's the mina.

  496. That's the treasure

  497. that we are given.

  498. Just stop and think about

  499. what is the gospel?

  500. The gospel is the announcement

  501. that we are made

  502. by God,

  503. our good and holy creator,

  504. and we are subject to him

  505. as our good

  506. and gracious king.

  507. But as subjects,

  508. we choose to say no

  509. to God's rule

  510. in a whole variety of ways.

  511. Breaking his law,

  512. refusing his will,

  513. rejecting his love.

  514. That every person

  515. who has ever lived

  516. stands guilty

  517. of rebellion

  518. and treason

  519. against God

  520. and God's king.

  521. And wonderfully,

  522. despite our rejection

  523. of him,

  524. God chooses

  525. to show grace.

  526. And God,

  527. in his grace,

  528. sends his son Jesus

  529. as his promised king.

  530. And Jesus

  531. is the king

  532. who will rescue

  533. his people

  534. by dying

  535. in our place

  536. for the sins

  537. of all who will put

  538. their trust in him

  539. on the cross.

  540. Jesus is the king

  541. who rules

  542. over us,

  543. building his kingdom,

  544. the church,

  545. sending his spirit,

  546. giving forgiveness

  547. in new life.

  548. And Jesus

  549. is the king

  550. who will return

  551. to take his people

  552. to live with him

  553. one day

  554. in his eternal

  555. kingdom of love.

  556. And he invites us

  557. to receive

  558. his treasure,

  559. to believe

  560. the good news

  561. of saving grace,

  562. to turn from rebellion,

  563. to trust in him

  564. as Lord and Savior,

  565. and to enter

  566. into this kingdom.

  567. That good news

  568. is the treasure.

  569. And that good news

  570. is powerful.

  571. So here's the other difference

  572. from the story

  573. in Matthew.

  574. When there's the time

  575. of reckoning,

  576. when the servants

  577. stand before the king,

  578. we find them saying,

  579. you entrusted

  580. these talents

  581. to me,

  582. and see,

  583. I have gained

  584. ten more.

  585. I have gained

  586. five more.

  587. How does Jesus

  588. tell the story here?

  589. Verse 16,

  590. the first one

  591. came and said,

  592. Sir,

  593. your mina

  594. has earned

  595. ten more.

  596. Verse 18,

  597. the second came and said,

  598. Sir,

  599. your mina

  600. has earned

  601. five more.

  602. Where does the growth

  603. come from?

  604. It comes from the money.

  605. It comes from the treasure.

  606. It comes from the power

  607. of the gospel of God.

  608. The transformation

  609. comes from God

  610. and His good word

  611. about His good king.

  612. It is the good news

  613. of the Lord Jesus

  614. that brings forgiveness.

  615. It is the good news

  616. of the Lord Jesus

  617. that brings spiritual freedom.

  618. It's the good news

  619. of King Jesus

  620. that establishes us

  621. in fellowship with God

  622. and with one another

  623. in the church.

  624. It's the good news

  625. of King Jesus

  626. that we receive

  627. by faith.

  628. And so we teach it

  629. and we share it

  630. and we proclaim it

  631. all the while

  632. trusting

  633. that God's word

  634. does its work.

  635. That it's the gospel word

  636. that is powerful.

  637. It's the gospel word

  638. that saves.

  639. And we are called

  640. to be obedient

  641. and faithful servants.

  642. That takes us

  643. to the last thing

  644. I want us to think about

  645. the king's servants.

  646. I remember

  647. I think it was probably

  648. my first week

  649. as a Scottish history

  650. student

  651. we had

  652. a very energetic

  653. slightly eccentric

  654. perhaps

  655. a professor

  656. of Scottish history

  657. who told us

  658. two things

  659. that first week.

  660. One

  661. who told us

  662. just how bad

  663. and historically

  664. inaccurate Braveheart was.

  665. That can kind of

  666. help you gauge

  667. my age

  668. and stage in life.

  669. And the other thing

  670. he told us

  671. was that he was only

  672. recently back

  673. from Canada.

  674. When Scotland

  675. had had a referendum

  676. about independence

  677. from the UK

  678. and that referendum

  679. failed

  680. he'd had enough

  681. of UK rule

  682. and he left

  683. to go and live

  684. in Canada.

  685. For years

  686. and years

  687. and years

  688. a particular

  689. government

  690. or a particular

  691. form of government

  692. can lead us

  693. to vote

  694. with our feet

  695. to say

  696. nope

  697. I don't want

  698. that form of rule

  699. I don't want

  700. that king

  701. and so I'm

  702. leaving the country.

  703. We know this

  704. we see it

  705. we see it

  706. in the world.

  707. Jesus' story

  708. reveals something

  709. hugely significant.

  710. While many

  711. dislike his rule

  712. hate his rule

  713. oppose him

  714. as king

  715. we cannot

  716. avoid the reality

  717. of his rule.

  718. My feelings

  719. about the rule

  720. of Jesus

  721. your feelings

  722. about the rule

  723. of Jesus

  724. does not change

  725. the fact

  726. that he rules.

  727. He is king

  728. he will always be

  729. king of kings

  730. and lord of lords.

  731. He is

  732. God's king

  733. we all stand

  734. accountable to him

  735. and one day

  736. he will pass

  737. judgment

  738. on all of us.

  739. That's something

  740. we need to reckon

  741. with.

  742. Return with me

  743. for a moment

  744. to verse 11.

  745. I think this is

  746. really interesting

  747. how it's introduced.

  748. While they were

  749. listening to this

  750. he went on

  751. to tell them

  752. a parable.

  753. What have they

  754. just been listening to?

  755. They've been listening

  756. to Jesus

  757. talking with Zacchaeus

  758. and they've just

  759. heard Jesus say

  760. today salvation

  761. has come to this

  762. house because

  763. this man too

  764. is a son of Abraham

  765. for the son of man

  766. came to seek

  767. and to save the lost.

  768. What are they

  769. listening to?

  770. This good news

  771. that Jesus has come

  772. on a rescue mission

  773. that he brings

  774. saving grace

  775. that he comes

  776. to seek

  777. and to save

  778. the lost

  779. that he has

  780. the power

  781. to call people

  782. from darkness

  783. into light

  784. from death

  785. to life

  786. to make people

  787. who have deliberately

  788. made themselves

  789. strangers to God

  790. to bring them

  791. into the family

  792. of God.

  793. He's come on

  794. this loving

  795. rescue mission

  796. and yet still

  797. there are those

  798. who say

  799. we don't want him.

  800. There are two

  801. responses in this

  802. story of course.

  803. There's the

  804. positive response.

  805. There are those

  806. servants who hear

  807. the call of the king

  808. they acknowledge

  809. his authority

  810. and they gladly

  811. serve him

  812. honoring him

  813. with their obedience

  814. and in particular

  815. according to this

  816. parable

  817. they are those

  818. who put this

  819. money to work.

  820. The king gives

  821. a treasure

  822. they put the

  823. treasure to work.

  824. If the treasure

  825. is the good news

  826. of who Jesus is

  827. and what he's done

  828. for us in dying

  829. and rising

  830. what does it look

  831. like to put that

  832. to work in our lives?

  833. Well it begins

  834. of course by

  835. personally receiving

  836. by faith

  837. this good news.

  838. We apply it

  839. to our lives

  840. so that we might

  841. enjoy eternal life.

  842. We put it to work

  843. in our lives

  844. by seeking

  845. by God's grace

  846. to grow

  847. spiritually.

  848. So we want

  849. to read

  850. God's word

  851. that we might

  852. hear him speak

  853. to us.

  854. We might receive

  855. grace.

  856. We want to draw

  857. on our communion

  858. with him as we pray.

  859. We want to gather

  860. together to worship.

  861. We put it to work

  862. as we seek

  863. to grow

  864. in obedience.

  865. As we recognize

  866. that he is king

  867. and yes I am

  868. a servant.

  869. We look to grow

  870. in love.

  871. As we recognize

  872. that the rule

  873. of faith

  874. for the Christian

  875. is summarized

  876. by Jesus

  877. and love the Lord

  878. your God

  879. with all your heart

  880. soul mind and strength

  881. and love your neighbor

  882. as yourself.

  883. So we put it to work

  884. as we seek

  885. with his help

  886. to grow in our love.

  887. We put it to work

  888. as we grow

  889. in our commitment

  890. to his mission.

  891. As we recognize

  892. that he is the king

  893. and that everybody

  894. should recognize

  895. his glory.

  896. We want to support

  897. the work of the church

  898. here locally

  899. and globally

  900. in our prayers

  901. and our giving

  902. and our going.

  903. Well those

  904. we're told

  905. who put the money

  906. to work

  907. who have that

  908. positive response

  909. they receive

  910. don't they

  911. a positive outcome.

  912. Jesus says

  913. verse 17

  914. because you've been

  915. trustworthy

  916. in a very small matter

  917. take charge

  918. of ten cities

  919. faithful with

  920. just a little

  921. honour of

  922. greater responsibility

  923. that promise

  924. that we will

  925. rule with the Lord

  926. Jesus

  927. in the new heavens

  928. in the newer

  929. made to rule

  930. one day

  931. that rule

  932. will be perfectly

  933. restored

  934. and we will rule

  935. and reign

  936. with him.

  937. There's honour

  938. there's joy

  939. waiting for us

  940. as the people

  941. of God.

  942. There's a positive

  943. response to the king

  944. but there's also

  945. the negative response.

  946. Jesus knew he was

  947. going to meet

  948. a negative response

  949. by and large

  950. at the cross.

  951. Verse 20

  952. there's that servant

  953. who said

  954. here's your mina

  955. I've kept it

  956. laid away

  957. in a piece of cloth

  958. I was afraid of you

  959. because you're a hard man.

  960. He does someone

  961. refusing to do anything

  962. with the treasure

  963. that the king gives

  964. not receiving

  965. the good news

  966. personally

  967. not receiving

  968. Jesus as Lord

  969. and Saviour

  970. no desire

  971. to share it

  972. with others

  973. here's someone

  974. who misrepresents

  975. the king

  976. harsh

  977. unworthy

  978. of loyalty

  979. unworthy

  980. of service

  981. ignoring the fact

  982. that he's been

  983. joyfully generous

  984. you've looked after

  985. a little bit of money

  986. look after ten cities

  987. for me

  988. missing his generosity

  989. and failing

  990. in their duty

  991. as servants

  992. to the king

  993. it's a sad picture

  994. it's a sad picture

  995. in our day

  996. of someone

  997. who is religious

  998. but with no spiritual life

  999. got that mina

  1000. but doing nothing

  1001. with it

  1002. and that brings

  1003. the negative outcome

  1004. verse 24

  1005. take his mina away

1006. and give it to the one

  1007. who is ten

  1008. to take the money

  1009. means there's now

  1010. no relationship

  1011. with the king

  1012. no connection

  1013. to his kingdom

  1014. they are in fact

  1015. the enemies

  1016. of the king

  1017. in their rejection

  1018. those enemies

  1019. of mine

  1020. who did not want

  1021. me to be king

  1022. over them

  1023. bring them here

  1024. and kill them

  1025. in front of me

  1026. Jesus is very honest

  1027. sounds a loving warning

  1028. you don't want

  1029. to hear

  1030. condemnation

  1031. from king

  1032. jesus

  1033. the lesson

  1034. is loud and clear

  1035. of this parable

  1036. when it comes

  1037. to the good news

  1038. of king jesus

  1039. the good news

  1040. of his victory

  1041. over sin

  1042. and death

  1043. of his gift

  1044. of forgiveness

  1045. and eternal life

  1046. of entry

  1047. into his kingdom

  1048. of the privilege

  1049. of serving him

  1050. we either use it

  1051. or we lose it

  1052. and each of us

  1053. must decide

  1054. use it

  1055. or lose it

  1056. we're going to close

  1057. with this reminder

  1058. that the king

  1059. comes to us

  1060. today

  1061. to offer us

  1062. grace

  1063. today

  1064. remember verse 11

  1065. while they were

  1066. listening to this

  1067. while they were

  1068. listening to the one

  1069. who said

  1070. I've come to seek

1071. and to save the lost

  1072. I've come to bring

  1073. salvation and grace

  1074. I imagine

  1075. that at least

  1076. some of us

  1077. might be here

  1078. today thinking

  1079. jesus calls me

  1080. to put

  1081. what he's given me

  1082. to work

1083. and what have I done

  1084. for jesus

  1085. perhaps that's true

  1086. of most christians

  1087. as we reflect

  1088. william carey

  1089. who brought the gospel

  1090. to india

  1091. on his birthday

  1092. when he was 58

  1093. he wrote a letter

  1094. to his son

  1095. he said I'm 58

1096. and I've done so little

  1097. I imagine if that's true

  1098. for william carey

  1099. it's something that we

  1100. perhaps resonate with

1101. and we need to be reminded

1102. by the king of grace

  1103. you are not saved

1104. by what you have done

  1105. I am not saved

1106. by what I have done

  1107. but only by what

  1108. jesus has done

  1109. for you

  1110. remember

  1111. remember

  1112. we're saved by grace

  1113. remember our generous

  1114. king and savior

  1115. and remember

1116. that he loves to reward

1117. even the cup of water

  1118. given in his name

  1119. when we feel

  1120. kind of flat

  1121. I've done so little

  1122. we remember his goodness

  1123. and his grace

  1124. that's where we're going

  1125. to find our motivation

  1126. to keep on

  1127. seeking to be faithful

1128. with a cup of water

  1129. being faithful

  1130. in our weakness

  1131. as we remember

1132. the grace that he shows

  1133. to us

  1134. and that he gives

1135. to us day by day

1136. but maybe some of us

  1137. are here today

  1138. and you know

  1139. we read this story

  1140. and you see yourself

  1141. and I'm like the king's

  1142. subject saying no

  1143. saying I don't want him

  1144. to be king

  1145. I'm the servant

  1146. who's had the gospel

  1147. I've had gospel privileges

  1148. and I've done

  1149. nothing with it

  1150. if that's you

  1151. remember

  1152. grace is offered

  1153. to you

  1154. from Jesus

  1155. today

  1156. Peter the apostle

  1157. will remind us

  1158. that the delay

  1159. in Jesus' return

  1160. is actually good news

  1161. it's patience

  1162. because it represents

  1163. a chance to repent

1164. to turn away from sin

1165. and to turn to God

  1166. to submit to him

  1167. as Lord

  1168. and King

  1169. so there is grace

  1170. offered to

  1171. all of us today

  1172. from King Jesus

  1173. whoever we are

  1174. wherever we find

  1175. ourselves

  1176. there is that promise

  1177. of grace

  1178. if

  1179. we will have him

1180. and if we will receive

  1181. from him

  1182. let's pray together

  1183. thank you

  1184. for the

  1185. in

  1186. the

  1187. world

  1188. and

  1189. and

  1190. it

  1191. within

  1192. and
