  1. The scripture reading today comes from the book of Matthew, chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the bulletin, on the screen, or on your own Bible.

  3. Starting in verse 15, we read,

  4. If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.

  5. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.

  6. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you,

  7. that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

  8. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church.

  9. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

  10. Truly, I said to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven,

  11. and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

  12. Again, I said to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask,

  13. it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

  14. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

  15. Then Peter came up and said to him,

  16. Lord, how often will my brothers sin against me, and I forgive him?

  17. As many as seven times?

  18. Jesus said to him,

  19. I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

  20. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king

  21. who wished to settle accounts with his servants.

  22. When he began to settle,

  23. one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

  24. And since he could not pay,

  25. his master ordered him to be sold,

  26. with his wife and children,

  27. and all that he had,

  28. and payment to be made.

  29. So the servant fell on his knees,

  30. imploring him,

  31. Have patience with me,

  32. and I will pay you everything.

  33. And out of pity for him,

  34. the master of that servant released him,

  35. and forgave him the debt.

  36. But when that same servant went out,

  37. he found one of his fellow servants

  38. who owed him a hundred denarii.

  39. And seizing him,

  40. he began to choke him, saying,

  41. Pay what you owe.

  42. So his fellow servant fell down

  43. and pleaded with him,

  44. Have patience with me,

  45. and I will pay you.

  46. He refused,

  47. and went and put him in prison

  48. until he should pay the debt.

  49. When his fellow servants saw

  50. what had taken place,

  51. they were greatly distressed.

  52. And they went and reported to their master

  53. all that had taken place.

  54. Then his master summoned him

  55. and said to him,

  56. You wicked servant,

  57. I forgave you all that debt

  58. because you pleaded with me.

  59. And should not you have had mercy

  60. on your fellow servant

  61. as I have mercy on you?

  62. And in anger,

  63. his master delivered him

  64. to the jailers

  65. until he should pay all his debt.

  66. So, also,

  67. my heavenly Father

  68. will do to every one of you

  69. if you do not forgive your brother

  70. from your heart.

  71. This is the word of God.

  72. Great.

  73. Thank you, Anastasia.

  74. Well, let's come before our Father

  75. in prayer

  76. as we look at this passage together.

  77. Lord Jesus Christ,

  78. Heavenly Father,

  79. Holy Spirit,

  80. we come before you this morning.

  81. We open up our,

  82. not only our hands,

  83. but our hearts.

  84. We want to hear from you.

  85. We want you to speak to us, God.

  86. Won't you minister to us?

  87. Won't you heal us?

  88. Won't you encourage us?

  89. Won't you call us to yourself?

  90. God, you know where each one of us

  91. are at this morning.

  92. You know our joys and our delights,

  93. our pains and our fears.

  94. Father, won't your word come and speak to us?

  95. Lord, open up our hearts

  96. as we open up your word, we pray.

  97. In your wonderful name.

  98. Amen.

  99. If you have recently returned to Hong Kong

  100. from being away for the whole summer

  101. or the whole of 2022,

  102. welcome back.

  103. EJ and others, great to have you.

  104. But you might be forgiven

  105. in not recognizing half of the church.

  106. And the reason is because

  107. over the last six months or so,

  108. there's been so much change at Watermark.

  109. We've had to say goodbye

  110. to a whole bunch of people.

  111. Chris and Jen, Chris and Fiona,

  112. Echo, Ryan and Catherine this week

  113. went to Singapore.

  114. We're going to be saying goodbye

  115. to some more people

  116. in the next couple of months.

  117. But we've also had a whole lot

  118. of new people coming,

  119. which has been wonderful.

  120. And that's been really exciting,

  121. getting to know some new people

  122. in the church.

  123. It's been really great.

  124. And so there's been lots of change.

  125. One of the new people

  126. that I hope does,

  127. I hope, let me put it this way.

  128. One of the guests

  129. that I hope never comes to Watermark,

  130. but may, but I hope

  131. we're going to do everything we can

  132. to shut him out,

  133. is a guest called Mr. Conflict.

  134. Mr. Conflict.

  135. What do you do when conflict

  136. comes to the church?

  137. Well, for a number of us here,

  138. you became a Christian at Watermark,

  139. and Watermark is maybe

  140. the only church that you know.

  141. And my hope is that

  142. it's been a good experience.

  143. Hopefully you've been welcomed

  144. with uncommon grace and humility.

  145. But we also know that

  146. that's not always the reality in church.

  147. Sometimes at Watermark,

  148. but maybe at another church as well,

  149. many of us have experienced pain

  150. and difficulty and conflict in the church.

  151. In Matthew 16,

  152. that we looked at a few weeks ago,

  153. Jesus says,

  154. I will build my church.

  155. And in chapter 18,

  156. which we looked at last week

  157. and this morning,

  158. Jesus is explaining his church,

  159. how it's going to operate

  160. and how his church is going to work.

  161. And one of the things that we see

  162. is that the church is made up

  163. of people who are both saints,

  164. but also sinners,

  165. but also sufferers,

  166. all at the same time.

  167. So the church,

  168. Christians are made up of

  169. saints and sinners and sufferers.

  170. The word saint doesn't mean

  171. someone who is morally perfect

  172. and got it all together.

  173. The word saint means

  174. someone who is set apart

  175. to be part of Christ's kingdom,

  176. belongs to Jesus.

  177. And that's what the church

  178. is made up of.

  179. But the church is also

  180. made up of sinners.

  181. We heard this last week

  182. where Niels explained to us,

  183. all of us are needy sinners.

  184. We are fallen.

  185. We are broken.

  186. We don't have it all together.

  187. Oh, but the church

  188. is also made up of sufferers

  189. because we live in a broken world

  190. and we feel the effect

  191. and the scars of other people's sin

  192. and brokenness in our lives.

  193. And so the church is made up

  194. of sinners and saints and sufferers

  195. and not just as a collection,

  196. but each one of us

  197. carry that ourselves.

  198. And so what that means is

  199. the church does not consist

  200. of those that are perfect people,

  201. but those that are forgiven people.

  202. Does that make sense?

  203. And so in a church family

  204. like Watermark,

  205. hopefully as wonderful as it is,

  206. it's not perfect.

  207. At best, we're made to be

  208. a foretaste of heaven,

  209. a picture of glory in some ways,

  210. this uncommon unity

  211. that Claire spoke about.

  212. But we're not perfect.

  213. We're still going to make mistakes.

  214. And sometimes that means

  215. this conflict is going to arise.

  216. And so in this passage,

  217. Jesus is going to tell us two things.

  218. He's going to say,

  219. on the one hand,

  220. don't be surprised

  221. when there's relational sin

  222. or conflict in the church

  223. because the church is not perfect.

  224. It's made up of imperfect people.

  225. And so don't be surprised

  226. when that happens as if,

  227. oh my goodness,

  228. I can't believe this.

  229. But on the other hand,

  230. Jesus says,

  231. don't be okay with it.

  232. Don't tolerate it.

  233. Don't say,

  234. oh well, you know,

  235. hey, that's the way it is.

  236. I guess we all just sinners,

  237. so okay.

  238. So don't be surprised,

  239. but don't be okay with it.

  240. And the reason is

  241. because conflict and sin

  242. is such a terrible thing.

  243. It causes such breakdown

  244. of relationship.

  245. It causes such hurt and pain.

  246. Sin always breaks relationship.

  247. One with God,

  248. vertically,

  249. but also horizontally

  250. with each other.

  251. And so that's why

  252. in our passage last week,

  253. if you'll remember,

  254. Neil's preached in verse six,

  255. Jesus says,

  256. if somebody causes

  257. one of these little ones,

  258. remember who the little ones?

  259. They're not the children.

  260. They're all of us.

  261. If somebody causes

  262. one of these little ones to sin,

  263. it would be better

  264. for a millstone

  265. to be tied around his neck

  266. and thrown into the sea.

  267. That's how serious

  268. Jesus is with sin.

  269. He says,

  270. if your right hand

  271. causes you to sin,

  272. hey, maybe you should

  273. cut it off.

  274. If your left foot

  275. causes you to sin,

  276. maybe cut it off.

  277. It's better to end

  278. into life maimed

  279. than to have two limbs

  280. and go to hell.

  281. Jesus says,

  282. sin is serious

  283. and it's terrible.

  284. And yet he says,

  285. don't be overly surprised

  286. when it happens

  287. because the church

  288. is not made up

  289. of perfect people.

  290. It's made up

  291. of forgiven people.

  292. Well,

  293. in our passage today,

  294. Matthew 18,

  295. the question is this.

  296. So how should we handle

  297. relational conflict

  298. in the church?

  299. There's two stories

  300. in our passage

  301. and they both start off

  302. with almost

  303. the identical sentence.

  304. If you've got your Bible,

  305. look at verse 15

  306. with me.

  307. Jesus says,

  308. if your brother

  309. sins against you.

  310. And then verse 21,

  311. Peter starts off

  312. the next section

  313. saying this,

  314. Lord,

  315. how many times

  316. should I allow

  317. my brother

  318. to sin against me

  319. and I forgive him?

  320. Two sentences

  321. that start off

  322. the two different sections

  323. almost identically.

  324. And so the question is this,

  325. how do we handle

  326. sin in the church?

  327. Relational conflict.

  328. When Jesus is talking

  329. about a brother here,

  330. he's not talking about

  331. your biological brother,

  332. he's talking about

  333. another believer,

  334. right?

  335. A brother or sister

  336. in Christ.

  337. Friends,

  338. how do we handle

  339. it when somebody

  340. lets you down?

  341. When somebody treats you

  342. in a way that you feel

  343. dishonored

  344. or embarrassed by them

  345. or shamed by them?

  346. Maybe you feel like

  347. somebody has spoken

  348. about you behind your back.

  349. Or maybe somebody

  350. says something

  351. and then you find out

  352. actually there's a whole

  353. other story,

  354. the reality is different

  355. and you feel like

  356. they've been dishonest

  357. with you.

  358. How do we handle

  359. these kind of difficulties?

  360. Somebody promises you

  361. something and then

  362. lets you down

  363. and makes a lame excuse.

  364. How do we handle

  365. relational difficulty

  366. in the church?

  367. Well,

  368. before we get to Jesus,

  369. let's think about this.

  370. Let me suggest

  371. a couple of ways

  372. we could handle it.

  373. One way is you could say,

  374. I'll trust you

  375. the first time,

  376. but thereafter

  377. you let me down,

  378. that's it, right?

  379. Do you know the saying,

  380. if you hurt me once,

  381. shame on you.

  382. You hurt me twice,

  383. shame on me.

  384. I don't know if you know

  385. that saying, right?

  386. It means I'll trust you

  387. the first time,

  388. but if you hurt me

  389. and I trust you again,

  390. that's my fault

  391. for trusting you.

  392. So maybe you feel like,

  393. I'll trust you the first time,

  394. but you've got one shot at it,

  395. don't let me down.

  396. After that,

  397. I'm going to withdraw

  398. and just retreat.

  399. Maybe you could feel like,

  400. hey,

  401. I've been hurt down

  402. by people in the past,

  403. maybe my parents

  404. or a colleague

  405. or a friend,

  406. maybe the pastor

  407. at my previous church.

  408. Actually,

  409. so I'm going to build up

  410. my wall around me

  411. and I'm going to just

  412. keep my distance from people

  413. and not really let anyone in.

  414. I don't know if you know

  415. the song by Paul Simon

  416. back in the 80s,

  417. I Am a Rock.

  418. He says,

  419. I have no need for friendship.

  420. Friendship causes pain.

  421. If I never loved,

  422. I never would have cried.

  423. So I built up the walls.

  424. I am a rock.

  425. I am an island.

  426. For a rock feels no pain

  427. and an island never cries.

  428. Maybe that's how you feel, right?

  429. I've been hurt in the past.

  430. I'm going to build up my walls.

  431. I'm not going to let anybody in.

  432. Maybe there's another way

  433. to handle difficulty

  434. and that is

  435. to take the advice

  436. of social media.

  437. What does social media

  438. tell us these days?

  439. If any relationship

  440. causes you stress

  441. or anxiety,

  442. it's a toxic relationship,

  443. you cut them off, right?

  444. That's the thinking

  445. of our world, right?

  446. Toxic relationships

  447. are bad for you.

  448. That person's dead to me.

  449. I don't have time

  450. for toxic relationships.

  451. Someone causes you

  452. stress and anxiety,

  453. you just cut them off.

  454. How should we as a church

  455. handle relational difficulty

  456. when conflict comes to church?

  457. Well, Jesus is going to give us

  458. two bits of wisdom

  459. in this passage

  460. that go right against

  461. the grain of popular culture.

  462. And so let's see

  463. what Jesus says

  464. in our passage.

  465. The first thing Jesus says

  466. is this.

  467. Don't hide from

  468. relational conflict.

  469. Talk about it.

  470. Don't ignore it.

  471. Sweep it under the rug.

  472. Pretend it doesn't exist.

  473. No, go talk about it.

  474. Address it.

  475. Look at verse 15

  476. with me

  477. in your Bible.

  478. Neil spoke about this

  479. last week,

  480. but let's look at it

  481. again briefly.

  482. Verse 15,

  483. Jesus says,

  484. If your brother

  485. sins against you,

  486. then put on a friendly face

  487. at church

  488. and pretend

  489. nothing has happened

  490. in order to maintain

  491. the peace.

  492. No, no,

  493. he doesn't say that.

  494. He says,

  495. No, if your brother

  496. sins against you,

  497. go and talk to him

  498. about it.

  499. Tell him his fault,

  500. his offense,

  501. between him

  502. and you alone.

  503. Now,

  504. the way that Matthew

  505. writes this,

  506. it sounds pretty

  507. black and white, right?

  508. Somebody does something,

  509. you just go to them

  510. and say,

  511. Hey, Buster,

  512. you messed up.

  513. Let's sort it out.

  514. Well, in reality,

  515. life's not often

  516. that black and white, right?

  517. It's not always

  518. that clear.

  519. And so maybe

  520. a better way

  521. of talking about it

  522. is if somebody,

  523. if you feel like

  524. somebody's hurt you

  525. or offended you

  526. or done something

  527. against you,

  528. a good way to handle it

  529. is to go and say,

  530. Hey, I feel like

  531. this has happened.

  532. Am I understanding

  533. the situation right?

  534. Or,

  535. my impression is that

  536. you said this,

  537. but then this happened

  538. and that feels like

  539. there's a disconnect.

  540. Can we talk about this?

  541. So rather than just

  542. going and saying,

  543. You sucker,

  544. this is what you did,

  545. there's a way

  546. to approach it

  547. that requires humility

  548. and wisdom

  549. and grace.

  550. But Jesus' point here

  551. is don't just sweep it

  552. under the rug,

  553. pretend nothing's happened,

  554. actually go and talk

  555. to your brother

  556. or your sister about it.

  557. See, I feel like

  558. this might have happened.

  559. Can we talk about this?

  560. And so our job

  561. is not to be

  562. the chief prosecuting officer

  563. in the church

  564. to go around

  565. telling everybody

  566. their fault.

  567. No, no,

  568. that's just going to

  569. make people defensive.

  570. If we do it

  571. with humility,

  572. people will have humility

  573. to hear it

  574. and receive it.

  575. But Jesus' point

  576. is this,

  577. when something comes up,

  578. when someone has wronged you,

  579. go and talk to them

  580. about it.

  581. Now,

  582. why should we do this?

  583. Is it because

  584. we want to put people

  585. in their place?

  586. Is it a bit too much

  587. pride in the church

  588. and so we've just

  589. got to humble people

  590. a little bit,

  591. bring them down

  592. a notch or two?

  593. Or maybe the reason

  594. is because

  595. actually my reputation

  596. has been tattered

  597. and I want to restore

  598. my reputation

  599. in the community.

  600. No, no,

  601. actually look at

  602. what Jesus says here,

  603. verse 15,

  604. because if he listens

  605. to you,

  606. you've gained your brother

  607. or your sister.

  608. Jesus' point here,

  609. his motivation,

  610. is love.

  611. It's to restore

  612. the relationship,

  613. to restore trust,

  614. to rebuild

  615. the relationship

  616. that's been hurt.

  617. The goal here

  618. is to love someone.

  619. It's a form of love

  620. to honor them enough

  621. to go and talk to them

  622. and say,

  623. hey, I know this is difficult,

  624. but I feel like

  625. this has happened.

  626. Can we talk about this?

  627. It's the same thing

  628. Jesus says

  629. in the section before,

  630. right?

  631. He says,

  632. if someone's got

  633. a hundred sheep

  634. and one wanders off,

  635. it's easy to think,

  636. ah, it's just one,

  637. I've still got 99.

  638. Actually,

  639. go and leave those 99

  640. where they are

  641. and you go after the one.

  642. Friends,

  643. it's easy to think,

  644. I've got 99 other friends

  645. in church,

  646. it's okay if I lose

  647. one or two.

  648. No, no, no.

  649. No, leave those 99,

  650. they'll still be there.

  651. You go after the one,

  652. say,

  653. hey, can we talk about this?

  654. Now,

  655. the reality is

  656. that sometimes

  657. it doesn't always go

  658. as well as that,

  659. right?

  660. You go and you talk

  661. to someone

  662. and you say,

  663. hey, can we talk about this?

  664. And they push back

  665. and they don't want

  666. to talk about it

  667. or they get defensive

  668. and they say,

  669. no, it's not the case

  670. or they maybe twist it on you

  671. and say,

  672. actually, it's your fault.

  673. If you hadn't done this,

  674. I wouldn't have done this.

  675. And what does Jesus say?

  676. Do we just say,

  677. okay, well, I tried.

  678. I guess I'll just avoid

  679. that person.

  680. No, look what he says.

  681. He says,

  682. go and take somebody with you.

  683. Maybe take a friend

  684. or a CG leader

  685. or an elder

  686. and say,

  687. hey, I really want

  688. to talk through this.

  689. I really want to store

  690. the relationship.

  691. Can we talk through

  692. what happened here?

  693. And eventually,

  694. that person still

  695. doesn't want to talk about it

  696. or maybe the members

  697. need to get involved

  698. and say,

  699. hey, when we've joined

  700. this church,

  701. we agreed this is how

  702. we're going to handle things

  703. and this isn't how

  704. we handle it.

  705. Let's really talk about it.

  706. But Jesus' point is here.

  707. When there's relational difficulty,

  708. you feel like someone's hurt you

  709. or let you down,

  710. don't ignore it.

  711. Don't pretend it.

  712. Go and talk to them.

  713. And the reason is this.

  714. Because relational conflict

  715. is like food

  716. that's going moldy

  717. at the back of the fridge.

  718. Right?

  719. Do you know what that is like?

  720. You open the fridge

  721. and there's some noodles

  722. from like three weeks ago

  723. and there's some stuff

  724. growing on it

  725. or you untapped the milk

  726. and you can smell it

  727. and it smells terrible.

  728. Oh, it's so easy

  729. just to close the fridge

  730. and leave it to someone else.

  731. Especially if you live

  732. in like a commune

  733. or a digs

  734. with other students, right?

  735. Say, I'm just going to leave it.

  736. It'll be someone else's problem.

  737. But it doesn't go away, does it?

  738. It's just going to get worse.

  739. Or even more serious,

  740. imagine you go to the doctor

  741. and you say,

  742. I'm just not feeling well.

  743. And he does a scan

  744. and he finds a growth

  745. or a lump

  746. and he feels like,

  747. I really want to go

  748. on holiday next week.

  749. This is not very convenient.

  750. I'm just going to pretend

  751. it's not there.

  752. That's not going to help things.

  753. It's not going to disappear

  754. on its own.

  755. It doesn't just vanish.

  756. No, no, no.

  757. You deal with it.

  758. You move towards it.

  759. Hey, can I tell you

  760. where I see this the most often

  761. in my life?

  762. With my marriage to Claire, right?

  763. Sometimes I know

  764. you'd never believe it,

  765. but just hypothetically, right?

  766. Something happens between us

  767. and there's some misunderstanding

  768. and I feel like,

  769. and then I tell myself,

  770. I don't want to avoid,

  771. I don't want to deal with this.

  772. I'm just going to avoid it.

  773. And I tell myself,

  774. it's not a big deal.

  775. It's just,

  776. if I ignore it,

  777. it's going to go away.

  778. And what happens

  779. after two or three days,

  780. I'm thinking about it

  781. and I start to think,

  782. I said this

  783. and then she said this

  784. and then I said

  785. we're going to do this

  786. and then she went and did this

  787. and I'm replaying it

  788. over in my mind

  789. and I'm telling myself,

  790. it's not a big deal,

  791. it's just going to go away.

  792. But what's happening,

  793. it's still there

  794. and then two days later,

  795. something small happens

  796. and what do you think

  797. comes out of my mouth?

  798. A whole volcano

  799. of frustration

  800. and emotion, right?

  801. And in that moment,

  802. I wish,

  803. oh my goodness,

  804. I wish just two days ago,

  805. I'd said,

  806. hey love,

  807. I feel like,

  808. I feel like there's something

  809. between us

  810. or hey love,

  811. I feel misunderstood,

  812. can we talk about this?

  813. I wish I had done it

  814. and I regret,

  815. I didn't.

  816. Friends,

  817. let's not let that happen

  818. in the church.

  819. Let's not stew on things

  820. or bury things

  821. or leave them unaddressed.

  822. Don't come to church

  823. with a fake smile,

  824. pretending everything's wonderful

  825. and in our heart,

  826. actually we are seething.

  827. No,

  828. let's talk about it.

  829. Let's address it.

  830. Let's restore the conflict.

  831. Let's humbly,

  832. graciously,

  833. love one another

  834. enough to talk about it.

  835. Now,

  836. in the second passage,

  837. second story,

  838. Jesus gives us

  839. another bit of wisdom

  840. and this is even harder

  841. and Jesus' wisdom is this.

  842. Firstly,

  843. we said,

  844. don't hide from it,

  845. talk about it.

  846. Secondly,

  847. Jesus says,

  848. don't hold on to it

  849. but release it.

  850. Look at verse 21 with me.

  851. Peter says,

  852. Lord,

  853. how often will my brother

  854. or sister

  855. sin against me

  856. and I forgive them?

  857. Now,

  858. that's a great question,

  859. right?

  860. That's a great question.

  861. How many times

  862. should somebody come to you

  863. and say,

  864. listen,

  865. I've messed up,

  866. please forgive me

  867. and you say,

  868. it's okay,

  869. it's behind us.

  870. Now,

  871. the rabbis in Jesus' day

  872. based on some scripture

  873. in the Old Testament

  874. thought three was a good number,

  875. right?

  876. Amos 1 and 2.

  877. So they said,

  878. three times you forgive your brother,

  879. the fourth time,

  880. that's it.

  881. They're not listening.

  882. Well,

  883. Peter's a very generous guy

  884. and so he says,

  885. seven times,

  886. Lord.

  887. And look at what Jesus says.

  888. I tell you not seven times

  889. but 77 times

  890. or the Greek could be

  891. 70 times seven times,

  892. right?

  893. Jesus' point here

  894. is not that you keep on

  895. forgiving somebody

  896. until you get to

  897. number 491,

  898. right?

  899. and then finally

  900. entitled to take revenge.

  901. 490 strikes

  902. and then you're out.

  903. No,

  904. Jesus' point here

  905. is don't keep score.

  906. Don't even count.

  907. If somebody comes to you

  908. and says,

  909. hey,

  910. I messed up,

  911. I'm really sorry,

  912. just forgive them.

  913. Let it go.

  914. Jesus' point here

  915. is if someone

  916. lets you down

  917. and messes up

  918. and they really come

  919. and ask for forgiveness,

  920. don't say,

  921. well,

  922. this is the fourth time,

  923. this is the seventh time.

  924. If they really are sorry,

  925. let it be to you

  926. like this is the very first time

  927. that it's happening.

  928. Now,

  929. Jesus here

  930. is not talking about

  931. brushing aside

  932. serious

  933. cases of abuse,

  934. right?

  935. If somebody comes

  936. and abuses you

  937. physically,

  938. emotionally,

  939. sexually,

  940. Jesus is not saying,

  941. ah,

  942. whatever,

  943. just forgive them,

  944. you know,

  945. you're a Christian,

  946. just let it go.

  947. No,

  948. no,

  949. friends,

  950. when there's cases of that,

  951. you may need to walk

  952. with a professional,

  953. a counselor,

  954. there's deep,

  955. deep pain involved,

  956. right?

  957. And so Jesus is not

  958. just brushing it off

  959. saying,

  960. ah,

  961. whatever.

  962. But Jesus is also

  963. not saying that

  964. forgiving somebody

  965. is the same

  966. as excusing somebody.

  967. And that's an important

  968. difference,

  969. right?

  970. Excusing somebody

  971. is saying

  972. there's some reason,

  973. there's some

  974. extenuating circumstances

  975. why they're not

  976. really responsible

  977. for what happened.

  978. So,

  979. for instance,

  980. right,

  981. you've got a meeting

  982. with somebody

  983. and they

  984. don't arrive

  985. for your meeting.

  986. They just don't show up.

  987. And they phone you

  988. and they say,

  989. I'm so sorry,

  990. it's my fault

  991. entirely,

  992. please forgive me.

  993. Okay,

  994. they're asking for forgiveness,

  995. right?

  996. But if somebody phones you

  997. and says,

  998. I'm so sorry,

  999. please forgive me,

  1000. just before I left

  1001. the office last night,

  1002. my boss gave me

  1003. this huge presentation.

  1004. And so I worked

  1005. until like 2 a.m.

1006. And just when I was

  1007. going to bed,

  1008. my dog got sick

  1009. and started vomiting

  1010. all over the couch.

  1011. And I,

  1012. it was an emergency,

1013. so I had to take my dog

  1014. to the vet

  1015. and you'll never believe

  1016. what happened.

1017. I got to the vet

1018. and there was somebody else

  1019. with their pet lion

  1020. and their lion

  1021. was attacking my dog

  1022. and I didn't get to sleep

  1023. until like 8 o'clock

  1024. this morning.

  1025. I'm so sorry.

  1026. What are they saying?

  1027. They're not asking

  1028. for forgiveness,

  1029. they're asking

  1030. to be excused,

  1031. right?

  1032. They're saying,

1033. it's not really my fault.

1034. Here are all the reasons

  1035. why I'm not responsible.

  1036. But when somebody's

  1037. asking to be excused,

  1038. what they're really saying

  1039. is the offense

  1040. that I've caused

  1041. is not that big

1042. or it didn't really hurt you

1043. or it's not really my fault.

  1044. But that's not what

1045. Jesus is talking about here.

  1046. Excusing somebody

  1047. is saying the offense

  1048. wasn't their fault.

  1049. Forgiving them

  1050. is releasing them

1051. even though it was their fault.

  1052. Jesus says we need

  1053. to forgive somebody

  1054. who sins against us.

  1055. He's not asking us

  1056. just to excuse them.

  1057. He's not asking us

  1058. to say,

  1059. well,

  1060. I guess it wasn't

  1061. really that bad.

  1062. Just, you know,

  1063. move on.

  1064. He's saying no,

  1065. it was bad.

  1066. It was painful.

1067. What they did was wrong.

  1068. But can you find

  1069. in your heart

  1070. to release them anyway?

  1071. When Jesus talks

  1072. about forgiveness here,

  1073. he's talking about

  1074. what Tim Keller says,

  1075. refusing to nurse

  1076. the grudge

  1077. in our heart

  1078. or replay the wrongdoing

  1079. over in our mind,

  1080. right?

  1081. in our hearts

  1082. and our minds.

  1083. C.S. Lewis says,

  1084. to forgive somebody

1085. is to make every effort

  1086. to kill

  1087. every taste

  1088. of resentment

  1089. or bitterness

  1090. in my heart,

  1091. every desire

  1092. to pay back,

  1093. humiliate,

1094. or to see the person

  1095. suffer.

  1096. It's to release

  1097. the moral debt

1098. that that person owes me

  1099. for their wrongdoing.

  1100. Now, of course,

  1101. that doesn't mean

  1102. that there's no consequences

  1103. to their wrongdoing.

1104. Somebody really lets you down

1105. again and again and again.

1106. It may take a while

  1107. to rebuild the trust.

  1108. It doesn't mean

  1109. that you just necessarily

  1110. trust them straight away,

1111. but you can release them

  1112. from the moral debt

  1113. that they owe you.

  1114. Somebody talks about you

  1115. behind your back

  1116. or lies to you

  1117. again and again,

  1118. there's consequences to that.

  1119. Somebody does something

  1120. really egregious,

1121. they may go to jail

  1122. and have to face

  1123. the consequences.

  1124. So forgiving them

  1125. doesn't mean

  1126. not facing consequences,

1127. but it means releasing them

  1128. of the bitterness

  1129. in our own hearts

  1130. the resentment

  1131. and the moral debt

  1132. that they owe us.

  1133. Jesus is calling us

  1134. to kill every taste

  1135. of resentment

  1136. in our hearts

1137. and to release the person

  1138. from our hearts.

1139. Now, on the one hand,

1140. as we spoke about earlier,

  1141. popular culture says,

1142. hey, if somebody hurts you,

1143. you cut them off, right?

  1144. They're causing you

  1145. stress and anxiety,

  1146. just find other friends.

  1147. On the other hand,

  1148. there's another approach

  1149. that popular culture has

  1150. and it says this,

  1151. to forgive somebody

  1152. is the best thing

  1153. that you can do

  1154. because that's actually

  1155. the way that you

1156. are going to be free

  1157. from the pain

  1158. that they're causing you.

  1159. In other words,

  1160. culture tells us

  1161. if you hold on

  1162. to resentment

  1163. and bitterness,

  1164. it's like drinking a poison

1165. that's only going to cause

  1166. your own heart pain

1167. and it's better to release them

1168. so that you can be free.

1169. And that is definitely true.

  1170. I don't know if you know

  1171. the famous phrase, right?

  1172. Holding on to bitterness

  1173. is like drinking poison

1174. and waiting for someone else

  1175. to die.

  1176. And that's definitely true.

  1177. If you refuse

  1178. to forgive somebody,

  1179. you are inextricably tied

  1180. to that person,

1181. even if you don't want to be.

  1182. Even if that person

1183. moves to the other side

  1184. of the world

1185. or even if they pass away

  1186. and die,

1187. you are still bound to them

1188. if you can't forgive them.

1189. And so that is true,

1190. but that's not Jesus' motivation.

  1191. Jesus gives another motivation

  1192. in this passage.

1193. Jesus gives us a reason

  1194. to practice radical,

  1195. undeserved forgiveness

  1196. and grace,

  1197. not because of what

1198. it will do to us,

  1199. but because of what

1200. He has already done for us.

  1201. Jesus compels us

  1202. to forgive those

  1203. that have hurt us,

  1204. not because of what

1205. you can do for yourself,

  1206. but because of what

1207. He has done for you.

  1208. And so Jesus tells

  1209. this parable

1210. that Anastasia read to us.

1211. He says there's this guy

  1212. who owes 10,000 talents.

1213. Now in the first century,

1214. a talent was the highest

  1215. currency available.

  1216. It was the highest

  1217. unit of currency.

  1218. And 10,000

  1219. was the highest

  1220. Greek numeral.

1221. So Jesus here is saying

  1222. an obscene amount

  1223. of money, right?

  1224. Robert Gundry,

  1225. one of the commentators,

  1226. says a gazillion dollars.

  1227. Okay,

  1228. so that's how much

  1229. this guy earns.

  1230. So here's a guy,

1231. he owes a gazillion dollars,

  1232. more than you can

  1233. even fathom.

  1234. And one day,

  1235. his loan is recalled.

  1236. And he's doomed, right?

  1237. There's nothing

1238. he can do about it.

1239. He can't pay it back.

1240. He can't trade his way

  1241. out of his debt.

  1242. He can't sell himself

  1243. into slavery

1244. and pay off his debt.

1245. There's nothing he can do.

  1246. He's dead.

  1247. He's doomed.

  1248. And so the man

  1249. falls on his knees

  1250. and he says,

  1251. Lord, have mercy

  1252. with me.

  1253. Have patience with me.

  1254. I will repay you

  1255. everything I owe.

  1256. Which is a lie.

  1257. He can't repay it.

  1258. He's never going

  1259. to repay it back.

  1260. And amazingly,

  1261. this king,

  1262. this master,

  1263. for some reason,

  1264. decides to give him

  1265. grace and mercy.

  1266. And he doesn't just

  1267. give him more time

  1268. to get his affairs

  1269. in order

  1270. or to restructure

  1271. his loan.

  1272. He says,

  1273. do you know what?

  1274. Take your debt

  1275. that you owe me

  1276. and write it off.

  1277. He takes the contract

1278. note and he tears it up.

  1279. He completely just

  1280. writes off

  1281. this guy's debt.

  1282. He says,

  1283. you owe me nothing.

  1284. Insane, right?

  1285. Amazing.

  1286. Now,

  1287. a gazillion dollars

1288. doesn't really make sense to us.

  1289. So picture yourself

  1290. in this situation.

  1291. Imagine

  1292. you've got a credit card

1293. and you're not really careful

1294. and you spend wildly on it

1295. and you do a whole lot

  1296. of crazy things

  1297. and you make some

  1298. really bad decisions

  1299. and you feel like

  1300. you're wealthy

  1301. and you get into

  1302. tons of debt.

1303. And before you know it,

  1304. your credit card statement

  1305. says you're half a million dollars

  1306. in debt,

  1307. $500,000 in debt.

  1308. Maybe even more,

  1309. maybe a million dollars,

  1310. okay?

1311. A million dollars you owe.

1312. But in addition to that,

  1313. you actually bought

  1314. an apartment

  1315. a few years ago

  1316. when times were good

  1317. and you mortgaged it

  1318. up to the hilt

  1319. and now you own

1320. $20 million on your apartment

1321. and you just lost your job

  1322. and now you owe

  1323. over $20 million,

  1324. you've got no job,

  1325. no income,

  1326. you're in deep trouble,

  1327. right?

  1328. And so one day

  1329. your bank manager

  1330. phones you

  1331. and says,

  1332. hey,

1333. we need to talk about

  1334. your loan,

1335. the money that you owe us

  1336. and you don't know

  1337. what to say.

  1338. And so you say,

  1339. listen,

  1340. I'm really busy,

  1341. I'll call you later

1342. and you don't call back

  1343. and he phones

  1344. and you avoid

  1345. his phone calls

  1346. and eventually

  1347. he comes around

  1348. to your house,

  1349. right?

  1350. And you say,

  1351. listen,

  1352. I'm in deep trouble,

  1353. right?

  1354. I don't know

1355. how I'm going to pay you,

  1356. $20 million.

  1357. I don't know

  1358. but I'll make a plan.

  1359. Anyway,

  1360. the next day

1361. you get a phone call

  1362. and your bank manager

  1363. says,

  1364. I'm feeling generous today,

1365. I'm going to write off

  1366. that million dollars

  1367. that you owe us.

  1368. You go online

  1369. to your credit card

  1370. and you see

  1371. the total

  1372. says zero.

  1373. Unbelievable.

  1374. Oh my goodness.

  1375. I mean,

  1376. isn't that a good thing?

  1377. Well,

  1378. you phone your manager

  1379. and you say,

  1380. that's incredible

  1381. and he says,

  1382. oh by the way,

  1383. your mortgage

  1384. is gone as well.

  1385. It's zero.

  1386. He's cancelled

  1387. your debt.

  1388. I mean,

  1389. $20 million.

  1390. I would feel

  1391. pretty happy,

  1392. pretty free.

  1393. The chain on your,

1394. the burden on your shoulders

  1395. is gone,

  1396. right?

  1397. Well,

  1398. that's what's happened

  1399. to this guy

  1400. and more.

  1401. And so,

1402. he walks down the street

  1403. and he's dancing

  1404. and he's singing

1405. and he sees this guy

  1406. who owes him $5,000

  1407. and he says,

  1408. Phoebe,

  1409. you owe me $5,000

1410. and he goes up to her

  1411. and he says,

  1412. when are you going

  1413. to pay me?

  1414. Sorry,

  1415. Phoebe,

  1416. picked on you.

1417. He sees his friend Bob,

  1418. right?

  1419. He says,

  1420. Bob,

  1421. when are you going

  1422. to pay me?

  1423. $5,000.

  1424. You owe me,

  1425. you said you're going

  1426. to pay me

  1427. and his friend comes

  1428. and says,

  1429. hey,

  1430. my wife's in hospital.

1431. I've just had to pay.

  1432. I'm getting paid tomorrow.

1433. I'll pay you this week.

1434. And what does he do?

  1435. He says,

  1436. you lying scoundrel.

1437. And he takes his Bob

  1438. and he throws him

  1439. on the floor

1440. and he starts punching him

  1441. and kicking him

  1442. and drags him off

  1443. to the police station.

  1444. Well,

1445. look at what Jesus says.

  1446. Jesus says,

  1447. the master,

  1448. in his anger,

  1449. the master who forgave

  1450. his debt,

1451. will deliver such a man

  1452. to the torturers

  1453. until all his debt

  1454. is paid.

  1455. Why?

  1456. Because here's a man

  1457. that's received radical,

  1458. radical mercy

  1459. and that radical mercy

  1460. he's received

  1461. is disconnected

1462. from the rest of his life

1463. and he does not know

  1464. how to extend

  1465. even a fraction

  1466. of that mercy

  1467. to others.

  1468. Friends,

  1469. you see what Jesus

  1470. is saying here?

  1471. Jesus is saying that

  1472. if you're a follower of Jesus,

1473. we were like the servant.

1474. We were in the deepest

  1475. debt possible.

  1476. And like the servant,

1477. we couldn't even come close

1478. to paying off our debt.

1479. And so like the servant,

  1480. the only thing

  1481. that we could do

1482. was to get on our knees

  1483. before our father

  1484. and say,

  1485. Lord,

  1486. have mercy.

  1487. Lord,

  1488. have mercy.

  1489. Friends,

  1490. Jesus says that

  1491. if you're a Christian

  1492. this morning,

  1493. you're not a Christian

  1494. because of anything

1495. you did to repay your debt.

  1496. no human being

  1497. could pay back

1498. the debt that they owed.

  1499. No human being

  1500. could merit

  1501. or earn God's grace.

  1502. The only way

1503. that you become a Christian

  1504. is to cling

  1505. onto that old

  1506. rugged cross

  1507. and say,

  1508. God,

  1509. have mercy.

  1510. The only chance

  1511. we have

  1512. is to plead

  1513. for the undeserved

  1514. mercy of Jesus.

  1515. Miroslav Wolf

  1516. says this,

  1517. forgiveness flounders

  1518. when we not only

  1519. exclude those

  1520. that have hurt us

  1521. from the community

  1522. of humanity,

  1523. but we exclude

  1524. ourselves

  1525. from the community

  1526. of sinners.

  1527. That's a profound thought.

  1528. Forgiveness fails

1529. when we look at others

  1530. and we say,

  1531. there's something

1532. less than human about you.

  1533. There's something

  1534. different about you.

  1535. But we also look

  1536. at ourselves

  1537. and we say,

  1538. there's something

  1539. different about me.

  1540. All those suckers

  1541. out there are sinners

  1542. but there's something

  1543. different about me.

  1544. And so C.S. Lewis

  1545. famously said,

  1546. to be a Christian

  1547. means to forgive

  1548. the inexcusable

  1549. because in Christ

  1550. God forgave

  1551. the inexcusable

  1552. in me.

  1553. Friends,

  1554. you know that

  1555. that's true for me,

  1556. your pastor.

  1557. I am infinitely worse

  1558. than you can imagine.

  1559. Some of you know

1560. a lot of bad stuff

  1561. about me.

  1562. You don't even know

  1563. the beginning of it.

  1564. Jesus Christ

  1565. forgave

  1566. the inexcusable

  1567. crap in my life

  1568. and therefore

  1569. Jesus says,

  1570. Kevin,

  1571. can you extend

1572. a little bit of mercy

  1573. to those that

  1574. have let you down?

  1575. In Romans 2,

    Romans 2:4

  1576. verse 4,

  1577. there's this

  1578. incredible verse.

  1579. It's kind of like

  1580. a bedrock verse

  1581. for our church.

  1582. He says this,

  1583. don't you know

  1584. that the kindness

  1585. of God

1586. is meant to lead us

  1587. to repentance?

  1588. That's a foundational

  1589. verse for our church.

  1590. Friends,

  1591. Christians are those

  1592. who live lives

  1593. of confession

  1594. and repentance

  1595. daily.

  1596. Why?

  1597. Not because of

  1598. God's severity.

  1599. It's not God's harshness

  1600. that leads me

  1601. to repentance.

  1602. It's not God's

  1603. severity

  1604. that causes me

1605. to fall on my knees.

  1606. It's His kindness.

  1607. It's His compassion.

  1608. It's His tenderheartedness.

  1609. When I see

  1610. how God has treated

  1611. a rebel like me,

  1612. it causes me

1613. to get on my knees

  1614. and say,

  1615. oh God,

  1616. I'm so grateful.

  1617. Come and change me.

  1618. But do you see

  1619. what Jesus is saying

  1620. in this story?

  1621. The kindness of God

  1622. not only leads us

  1623. to repentance,

  1624. it also leads us

  1625. to forgiveness.

  1626. To forgive somebody

  1627. is to give them

1628. what they do not deserve.

  1629. To give undeserved mercy

  1630. in response

  1631. to the undeserved harm

  1632. that they've caused us.

  1633. And that means

  1634. that forgiveness

  1635. is always extremely costly.

  1636. It costs you

1637. your right to be angry.

  1638. It costs you

  1639. your right

  1640. to vindication.

  1641. It costs you

  1642. your right

  1643. to a reputation

  1644. in the community.

  1645. It costs you

  1646. your right

1647. to feel like a victim.

  1648. To forgive somebody

  1649. is always extremely costly.

  1650. And yet,

1651. for those who are in Christ

  1652. who have experienced

  1653. the kindness of Jesus,

1654. it's no cost at all.

  1655. And the reason is

  1656. because Jesus

  1657. has not only forgiven

  1658. our debt,

  1659. He's given us Himself.

  1660. Friends,

1661. if Jesus has given you

  1662. a new name

  1663. and a new identity

  1664. and a name

  1665. that's welcome

  1666. into His family

  1667. and a purpose

  1668. and a hope

  1669. and a future

1670. and a new track record,

1671. if Jesus has given you

  1672. Himself,

1673. what are you and I

  1674. looking to that person

  1675. that is so hard

  1676. to forgive

  1677. to give us

  1678. that Jesus Himself

1679. has not really given us?

1680. And so in Ephesians 4,

  1681. the Apostle Paul says,

  1682. he writes to these

  1683. young Christians

  1684. and he says,

  1685. put away all bitterness.

  1686. Put away anger.

  1687. Put away the malice.

1688. Be kind to one another.

  1689. Tenderhearted.

  1690. Forgive one another

1691. just as God in Christ

  1692. has forgiven you.

  1693. Friends,

  1694. when we are unaware

  1695. or we forget

  1696. our profound,

  1697. daily,

  1698. ongoing need

  1699. for forgiveness,

  1700. we lose not only

  1701. the pattern

  1702. but also the power

  1703. to forgive those

  1704. that hurt us.

  1705. Jesus' forgiveness of us

1706. is not only the pattern,

1707. it's not only the law,

  1708. it's also the power,

  1709. the motivation

  1710. to forgive those

  1711. that have hurt us.

  1712. In Jesus Christ

  1713. and His grace,

1714. we know that we have

  1715. all that we need,

  1716. undeservedly so.

1717. And so we can release those

  1718. that have undeservedly

  1719. hurt us

  1720. or taken from us.

  1721. And so friends,

  1722. if you're a Christian

  1723. this morning

  1724. and you feel

  1725. the deep pain

  1726. of being wronged

  1727. or being hurt,

  1728. can I ask you,

  1729. can I urge you

  1730. to come to Jesus?

  1731. I can't heal that pain.

  1732. I can't repay back

  1733. what has been taken

  1734. from you.

  1735. But Jesus Christ can.

  1736. And He'll give you

  1737. more than what's been

  1738. taken from you.

  1739. Friends,

  1740. can I urge you

  1741. to come to Him

  1742. this morning?

  1743. Come in your pain,

  1744. come in your tears,

  1745. come in your agony,

  1746. and ask Christ

  1747. to wash you

  1748. with His grace.

  1749. Friends,

  1750. in the church

  1751. we have both sinners

  1752. and saints

  1753. and sufferers.

  1754. Not only across

  1755. the church family

1756. but within each one of us.

  1757. And that means

  1758. that we shouldn't be

  1759. surprised or shocked

  1760. when things don't go

  1761. perfectly well

  1762. in the church.

1763. And yet at the same time

  1764. because we're meant

1765. to be a taste of heaven,

  1766. we shouldn't be okay

  1767. with it.

  1768. We should mourn it

  1769. and grieve it.

1770. And so how do we

  1771. handle it

  1772. when someone wrongs us?

  1773. How do we handle

  1774. conflict in church?

  1775. Well, we graciously

  1776. and humbly

  1777. move towards that person.

  1778. And we say,

  1779. I want to restore

  1780. the relationship.

1781. Can we talk about it?

  1782. But we don't just

  1783. go towards them

  1784. to do that.

1785. We also go towards them

  1786. with unfathomable grace

  1787. because of the grace

  1788. that we've received

  1789. in Christ Jesus.

  1790. Friends,

  1791. I'd love to pray

  1792. for us this morning

  1793. but Natalie,

1794. do you want to come

  1795. and lead us

  1796. in song?

  1797. We're going to pray

1798. in a few minutes time

1799. but before we do that

  1800. I want to just take a,

1801. give us a minute or two

  1802. just to reflect

1803. and just to sit quietly

  1804. and just to think.

1805. And maybe as we do that

  1806. maybe I can actually

  1807. just pray

1808. and ask God the Holy Spirit

  1809. to speak to us.

  1810. friends,

  1811. what has God

  1812. been saying to you

  1813. this morning?

  1814. If you're a human being

  1815. the chances are

  1816. somebody's hurt you

  1817. or let you down.

  1818. If you've lived

1819. for more than five years

  1820. in this world,

  1821. more than five minutes,

  1822. somebody's caused

  1823. some offense,

  1824. somebody's treated

  1825. you unfairly.

  1826. Friends,

  1827. I really am convinced

  1828. that God wants

1829. to heal some of us

  1830. this morning.

  1831. He wants us

  1832. to set us free.

  1833. He wants us

  1834. to demonstrate

  1835. the undeserved kindness

  1836. that maybe those people

  1837. don't deserve

  1838. but He wants us

  1839. to

  1840. be free

  1841. and to receive

  1842. His grace

  1843. so that we can

  1844. extend grace.

  1845. And so God,

  1846. the Holy Spirit,

  1847. I ask you God,

  1848. won't you come

  1849. and speak to us?

  1850. Won't you come

  1851. and heal us?

  1852. Won't you come

  1853. and minister to us?

  1854. I pray.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Amen.

  1857. Amen.

  1858. Amen.

  1859. Amen.

  1860. Amen.
