  1. Good morning, Watermark. The scripture reading comes from Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  2. Starting in verse 1, we read,

  3. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

  4. to the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus,

  5. grace to you and peace from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  6. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  7. who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

  8. even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world,

  9. that we should be holy and blameless before him.

  10. In love, he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ,

  11. according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace,

  12. with which he has blessed us in the beloved.

  13. In him, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespassers,

  14. according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us,

  15. in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will,

  16. according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time,

  17. to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

  18. In him, we have obtained an inheritance,

  19. having been predestined according to the purpose of him,

  20. who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

  21. so that we, who are the first to hope in Christ,

  22. might be to the praise of his glory.

  23. In him, you also, when you heard the word of truth,

  24. the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him,

  25. were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  26. who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it,

  27. to the praise of his glory.

  28. This is the word of God.

  29. Great, Iris. You read that so well. Well done. Thank you.

  30. Okay, let's look at this passage.

  31. And we're going to dive right in.

  32. It's a very meaty, meaty passage.

  33. Let's see if we can try and make sense of it.

  34. He starts off, Paul, verse 1,

  35. Paul, that's the guy who's writing this letter.

  36. And he writes to a bunch of Christians.

  37. He says, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God.

  38. Okay, we're going to talk a lot about the will of God

  39. in a few minutes' time. Hold on to that thought.

  40. And he says,

  41. To the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus.

  42. Last week, we spoke a little bit about the word saints.

  43. Saints doesn't mean super religious people or super holy ones.

  44. It just means those that are in Christ,

  45. those that are followers of Jesus.

  46. And he says,

  47. To those who are in Ephesus.

  48. Paul is this apostle who is writing this letter

  49. to this small church in the ancient city of Ephesus.

  50. Now, let's talk a little bit about Ephesus.

  51. Ephesus was one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire.

  52. It was the fifth largest city in the Roman Empire.

  53. It was the capital of the province of Asia in the Roman Empire.

  54. It was given this title,

  55. The First and Greatest Metropolis of Asia.

  56. That was the title,

  57. which sounds a lot to me like Asia's First World City.

  58. Right?

  59. Is that Asia's World City?

  60. That's our title.

  61. Okay, Ephesus, Asia's World City.

  62. But that's not the only place where connections with Hong Kong end.

  63. It was also a major port city.

  64. It was built.

  65. It had a major harbor.

  66. It was built on a port.

  67. It was a major trading city

  68. because it was built on the trading routes in that region.

  69. And so all the trade and the shipping routes that came past

  70. would stop in Ephesus and do their trade.

  71. So it was a very economically important and powerful city.

  72. It was also a very well-educated city.

  73. There was a big library called the Library of Celsus.

  74. It was actually built a few years after this letter.

  75. The third biggest library in the whole Roman Empire

  76. had 12,000 manuscripts and documents.

  77. So it was a very well-educated city.

  78. It was also a very religious city.

  79. Just outside of the city of Ephesus

  80. was this great temple called the Temple of Artemis,

  81. one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

  82. Ephesians were very proud of their Temple of Artemis.

  83. But it was also a very superstitious city.

  84. Everywhere you walked,

  85. there would be these little shrines

  86. and people offering offerings to Artemis,

  87. to the goddess of Artemis.

  88. There's actually a great story in Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  89. There's a silversmith called Demetrius,

  90. and he makes silver shrines of the goddess Artemis

  91. that people buy and then, you know,

  92. worship and carry around in their pockets.

  93. And he gets upset because the apostle Paul

  94. comes to Ephesus

  95. and is telling people about Jesus,

  96. and now people aren't buying his silver shrines

  97. because they're following Jesus.

  98. And so he gets this mob together

  99. to try and kill Paul and the apostles

  100. or at least drive them out.

  101. And this is what he says.

  102. He says,

  103. this guy Paul is persuading people

  104. to turn away from gods made with hands,

  105. saying that they're not actually gods.

  106. Which that's an interesting thought, right?

  107. Anyway, we can talk about that another time.

  108. He says,

  109. there's a danger not only to this business of ours,

  110. but also the great goddess Artemis,

  111. causing her to be deposed from her magnificence,

  112. she whom all Asia and the whole world worship.

  113. So they're getting upset

  114. because now these Ephesians are hearing about Jesus,

  115. who they say is the one true God,

  116. not Artemis,

  117. and now people are no longer buying his shrines

  118. or worshiping there at their temple.

  119. And so here is this great big world city,

  120. this trading city,

  121. this port city,

  122. this harbor city,

  123. an economically important city,

  124. a religious and superstitious city,

  125. lots of magic and spiritualists in the city.

  126. And in the middle of the city

  127. is this small little church.

  128. It's not very impressive,

  129. not very fancy.

  130. They maybe met in somebody's house,

  131. a house church,

  132. 10 people,

  133. maybe 15 people.

  134. And they're facing opposition and persecution

  135. for following Jesus.

  136. And the apostle Paul writes this letter

  137. to encourage them in their faith

  138. and to encourage them to follow Jesus.

  139. And so that's kind of what the letter is

  140. and where it's going.

  141. So verse two,

  142. he says,

  143. grace to you and peace from God,

  144. our father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  145. Now,

  146. the next 12 verses

  147. from verse three to 14

  148. are a tsunami

  149. of information

  150. and doctrine

  151. and theology.

  152. Okay?

  153. It's kind of like drinking

  154. from a fire hydrant.

  155. It's just you,

  156. the point is to be blown away.

  157. Okay?

  158. And in the Greek Bible,

  159. these 200 words

  160. are one sentence.

  161. It's probably the most complex sentence

  162. in the whole Bible.

  163. Paul goes all over the place

  164. without a full stop.

  165. And Iris did such a great job

  166. of reading it,

  167. but even our English,

  168. we've broken down

  169. to various sections.

  170. Paul just is overwhelming us

  171. with the tsunami of doctrine.

  172. Okay?

  173. And so let's try

  174. and see if we can pull out the threads

  175. and see something

  176. of the big idea

  177. of what Paul is saying

  178. and what God is wanting to say to us.

  179. And I think there's two big ideas here.

  180. Okay?

  181. The first one is this,

  182. the blessings of being in Christ

  183. and secondly,

  184. the cosmic purpose of God in Christ.

  185. Okay?

  186. The blessings of being in Christ

  187. for us individuals

  188. and the cosmic plan of God

  189. for the whole world in Christ.

  190. Okay?

  191. Let's see if we can try

  192. and make sense of that.

  193. So let's look at the first one,

  194. the blessings of being in Christ.

  195. Look at how Paul starts off.

  196. He says,

  197. blessed be

  198. or praise be

  199. or glory be

  200. to the God and Father

  201. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  202. So it's a statement of praise.

  203. He's worshiping God.

  204. All glory to you, God.

  205. And why is he doing that?

  206. Well, look what he says.

  207. For he has blessed us

  208. in Christ

  209. with every spiritual blessing

  210. in the heavenly places.

  211. So he writes this declaration of praise.

  212. Paul is doing

  213. what we did earlier.

  214. We sang.

  215. Nate and Cynthia

  216. and Jeremy

  217. led us in songs of worship

  218. and he's worshiping God.

  219. Why?

  220. Because of the multitude

  221. of blessings

  222. that God the Father

  223. has given

  224. or bestowed

  225. on those who are in Christ.

  226. Now, of course,

  227. he's not talking about

  228. material blessings

  229. like this great job I got

  230. or this house I've got

  231. or my great wife

  232. that I've got.

  233. Those are wonderful blessings as well.

  234. He's talking about

  235. the spiritual blessings,

  236. those that come

  237. from the Holy Spirit

  238. that pertain to

  239. my relationship with God.

  240. Praise be

  241. the God and Father

  242. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  243. who has blessed us in Christ

  244. with every spiritual blessing

  245. in the heavenly places.

  246. Okay,

  247. well,

  248. what are those blessings?

  249. Well,

  250. the rest of the passage

  251. is jam-packed full of them.

  252. Okay,

  253. let's look at a couple of them.

  254. Firstly,

  255. look at the blessings

  256. in the past.

  257. He says here

  258. in verse 3 and 4

  259. how God has blessed us

  260. in Christ

  261. even before time began.

  262. Okay,

  263. he says here,

  264. blessed be God

  265. who has blessed us

  266. in Christ

  267. even as He chose us,

  268. verse 4,

  269. in Him

  270. before the foundation

  271. of the world.

  272. So,

  273. I mean,

  274. that's a little mysterious.

  275. I'll give it to you.

  276. Okay,

  277. I don't fully understand

  278. how that all works.

  279. But something is saying

  280. before time began,

  281. before the foundations

  282. of the world,

  283. God chose

  284. to set His love

  285. on His people.

  286. Now,

  287. I may say

  288. that sounds a lot like

  289. election,

  290. predestination,

  291. and that whole

  292. big thing,

  293. right?

  294. And you're right.

  295. That's exactly

  296. what it sounds like.

  297. And how does that work?

  298. Well,

  299. I'm not exactly sure.

  300. But all we know

  301. is what the Bible

  302. says about it.

  303. The Bible says

  304. it's true.

  305. God and His sovereignty

  306. somehow arranged it

  307. like that.

  308. But Paul's point here

  309. is that God's blessings

  310. on His people

  311. didn't originate

  312. with me.

  313. God didn't look at me

  314. and say,

  315. now,

  316. Kevin,

  317. there's a good guy.

  318. There's a guy

  319. I can really bless.

  320. Not actually,

  321. before I'd done

  322. a single thing,

  323. good or bad,

  324. but before I'd done

  325. anything,

  326. God somehow

  327. in His mind

  328. chose to set

  329. His love

  330. on His people.

  331. And if you're in Christ,

  332. that's true

  333. for you as well.

  334. Christians aren't

  335. the instigators

  336. of God's blessing

  337. and a favor

  338. in our lives.

  339. We're the recipients

  340. of it.

  341. God is the instigator.

  342. It begins with Him.

  343. God set His love

  344. on His people.

  345. Now,

  346. one way you may

  347. think about this

  348. is if you're

  349. a parent here,

  350. when did you

  351. first decide

  352. to love your child?

  353. Was it when they

  354. started to make

  355. their bed?

  356. Right?

  357. Or they started

  358. to obey you

  359. or listen to you?

  360. Or maybe when

  361. they were finally

  362. potty trained,

  363. no more diapers,

  364. now I'm going

  365. to love my child.

  366. No, no, no,

  367. before they were

  368. even born, right?

  369. You love them.

  370. I remember when

  371. Claire and I

  372. went to have a scan.

  373. Claire was pregnant

  374. with Sierra,

  375. our first child,

  376. 12 weeks pregnant.

  377. And you go and

  378. have the scan

  379. to see if there's

  380. any medical conditions,

  381. right?

  382. If there's Down syndrome

  383. and they look at

  384. the nose and the flesh

  385. behind the neck,

  386. and when you go,

  387. the doctor says,

  388. now listen,

  389. these are the odds

  390. of a Down syndrome

  391. baby at your age

  392. and everything.

  393. And if the scan

  394. reveals that there's

  395. something wrong,

  396. well, these are

  397. your options,

  398. right?

  399. This is how we

  400. can terminate

  401. the pregnancy.

  402. And Claire and I

  403. said, no, no,

  404. no, we've set our

  405. hearts, we will

  406. love this child.

  407. Okay, there may be

  408. some medical

  409. challenges, okay,

  410. we'll live with that.

  411. No, we've decided

  412. before this child's

  413. even born,

  414. before we've met

  415. this child,

  416. we will love

  417. this child.

  418. Well, think about

  419. adoption, right?

  420. You go and you want

  421. to adopt a child,

  422. the agency doesn't

  423. say, okay,

  424. here's five pictures,

  425. choose which one's

  426. got the same nose as

  427. you and the same ears

  428. and which one looks

  429. cuddly.

  430. No, they don't give

  431. you a picture.

  432. And the agency says,

  433. we've got to tell you,

  434. there may be some

  435. medical challenges

  436. with this child,

  437. we don't know,

  438. right?

  439. And what do you say?

  440. we have decided in

  441. our heart,

  442. we will love this

  443. child as if it's our

  444. own flesh and blood.

  445. We have set our love

  446. on this child.

  447. Well, that's actually

  448. Paul's argument.

  449. Look what he says in

  450. verse five.

  451. He says,

  452. in love,

  453. he predestined us

  454. for adoption

  455. to himself

  456. as sons

  457. through Jesus Christ.

  458. Praise be to God

  459. and Father

  460. who in eternity

  461. past

  462. chose to set

  463. his love on us.

  464. That's in the past.

  465. Well, what about

  466. the present blessings?

  467. Well, look what he says.

  468. In Christ,

  469. we've been adopted

  470. as sons

  471. through Jesus Christ.

  472. Verse five.

  473. Adopted as sons,

  474. welcomed into his family.

  475. Now, you may say,

  476. why does Paul

  477. use the word of sons?

  478. Why not sons

  479. and daughters, right?

  480. Is Paul being chauvinistic?

  481. What's wrong with daughters?

  482. Well, in the ancient world,

  483. it was very common

  484. for sons

  485. to be adopted

  486. by high-ranking

  487. members of society,

  488. senators,

  489. and other officials

  490. in order to ensure

  491. that they had an heir

  492. to pass on their name

  493. and their inheritance.

  494. You may remember

  495. Caesar Augustus,

  496. the first emperor

  497. of the Roman Empire,

  498. was actually not

  499. the son of Julius Caesar.

  500. He was adopted,

  501. his adopted son.

  502. And yet,

  503. he was the heir

  504. of Julius Caesar.

  505. All his money,

  506. all his wealth,

  507. his status,

  508. everything was passed

  509. on to him.

  510. In the ancient Roman world,

  511. sons,

  512. adopted children,

  513. like in our day and age,

  514. have full legal rights

  515. and standing

  516. as natural children

  517. and is.

  518. There's no difference.

  519. Do you see what Paul's saying here?

  520. For those who have come to Christ

  521. in faith and repentance,

  522. you've been given

  523. the full legal standing

  524. and rights

  525. as if you are

  526. a legitimate child

  527. or son of God.

  528. In Romans 8,

  529. Paul writes this,

  530. In Christ you've received

  531. the spirit of your adoption

  532. as sons,

  533. through whom we cry,

  534. Abba,

  535. Father.

  536. The spirit himself

  537. bears witness

  538. with our spirit

  539. that we are children of God

  540. and if children then heirs,

  541. heirs of God,

  542. and listen up,

  543. fellow heirs with Christ,

  544. co-heirs with Christ.

  545. Now,

  546. in some ways,

  547. that sounds almost sacrilegious.

  548. I mean,

  549. Paul's almost saying

  550. if you're in Christ,

  551. you are equal

  552. with Christ

  553. before God the Father.

  554. Now,

  555. he's not saying

  556. you're divine,

  557. okay,

  558. I'm sorry to break it to you,

  559. you are not God.

  560. He's not saying

  561. that you're holy like Jesus,

  562. but he's almost saying

  563. there's something

  564. of equality

  565. that what Christ,

  566. the Son of God is,

  567. you as a son of God

  568. or daughter of God

  569. are a co-heir with Christ.

  570. I mean,

  571. it sounds ridiculous,

  572. right,

  573. that me,

  574. sinful,

  575. broken,

  576. messed up me,

  577. with all my issues

  578. and all my idols

  579. that I go and worship

  580. and all my insecurities

  581. and my fears,

  582. God looks on me

  583. and says,

  584. my son,

  585. I love you

  586. like I love my son Jesus.

  587. I mean,

  588. that's incredible.

  589. It almost feels wrong

  590. to say that.

  591. Oh,

  592. but we've been adopted

  593. as legal sons

  594. and daughters of God.

  595. And look at what he says

  596. in verse 7.

  597. In him you have redemption

  598. through his blood.

  599. Redemption means

  600. you once were a slave,

  601. you were under bondage,

  602. a price was being paid

  603. and now you're set free.

  604. So think about

  605. the ancient world,

  606. right?

  607. Someone's a slave,

  608. they've got the slave master

  609. that's cruel to them,

  610. always telling them

  611. what to do

  612. and somehow

  613. they are redeemed

  614. from slavery.

  615. Somebody pays

  616. the ransom price

  617. and they're set free.

  618. Well,

  619. the next day

  620. the slave goes

  621. into the marketplace

  622. and their previous

  623. slave owner comes

  624. and says,

  625. hey slave,

  626. come to me,

  627. I've got a job

  628. for you to do.

  629. And what does he say?

  630. You've got no claim on me.

  631. I've been set free.

  632. Whatever you say

  633. is meaningless.

  634. Well,

  635. Paul says here

  636. we have been redeemed

  637. through Christ.

  638. In other words,

  639. the bondage

  640. of our shame,

  641. the bondage

  642. of our guilt,

  643. the bondage

  644. of our debt

  645. that we owe

  646. as a result of our sin

  647. has no claim on us.

  648. You know

  649. that wonderful song

  650. we often sing?

  651. When Satan

  652. tempts me

  653. to despair

  654. and tells me

  655. of the guilt within,

  656. up where I look

  657. and see him there

  658. who made an end

  659. to all my sin.

  660. Friends,

  661. maybe this week

  662. you messed up,

  663. you did something wrong

  664. and Satan comes

  665. and says,

  666. you're such a sinner.

  667. How could God

  668. ever love you?

  669. Do you really think

  670. God the Father

  671. accepts you

  672. after all the things

  673. you've done wrong?

  674. How could God love you?

  675. Do you know

  676. what you say?

  677. I've been redeemed

  678. by the blood of Christ.

  679. Your accusations

  680. have no claim on me.

  681. We've been redeemed

  682. by His blood.

  683. He also says,

  684. in Christ

  685. we've been forgiven

  686. of our sins,

  687. washed,

  688. cleansed,

  689. justified,

  690. treated as if

  691. we'd never sinned.

  692. In Christ,

  693. the record of sin

  694. has been nailed

  695. to the cross.

  696. It's been torn up.

  697. It's been destroyed.

  698. To justify

  699. means

  700. just as if

  701. I had never sinned.

  702. Friends,

  703. look what he says

  704. in verse 4.

  705. God has chosen us

  706. to be holy

  707. and blameless

  708. in His sight.

  709. All of this

  710. is the blessings

  711. for those

  712. who are in Christ.

  713. Chosen before

  714. the world began.

  715. Redeemed,

  716. adopted,

  717. forgiven,

  718. cleansed,

  719. holy and blameless.

  720. Friends,

  721. we've been welcomed

  722. into God's family.

  723. Praise be

  724. to the God and Father

  725. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  726. who has blessed us

  727. in Christ

  728. with every

  729. spiritual blessing

  730. in the heavenly places.

  731. It's amazing.

  732. It really is amazing.

  733. Oh,

  734. but that's just

  735. the past blessing.

  736. That's just

  737. the present blessings.

  738. We haven't even got

  739. to the future blessings.

  740. Look at

  741. verse 11 to 14.

  742. Skip over 9 and 10.

  743. We'll come to that

  744. a little bit later.

  745. He says,

  746. in Him,

  747. we,

  748. he's talking about the Jews,

  749. okay,

  750. Paul's a Jew.

  751. In Him,

  752. we Jews,

  753. have obtained

  754. or been allocated

  755. an inheritance.

  756. That means a future blessing.

  757. Having been predestined

  758. according to the purpose

  759. of Him

  760. who works all things

  761. according to the counsel

  762. of His will.

  763. Okay,

  764. I told you he's very wordy.

  765. Nobody taught Paul

  766. to write short sentences.

  767. Zoe,

  768. he needs to go back

  769. to your grade 5 classes.

  770. You can teach Paul

  771. how to write,

  772. okay.

  773. In Him,

  774. you also,

  775. Gentiles,

  776. when you heard

  777. the word of truth,

  778. the gospel,

  779. we're sealed

  780. with the Holy Spirit,

  781. a guarantee

  782. of our inheritance

  783. until we acquire it.

  784. All that,

  785. what Paul is saying is,

  786. there's a future blessing

  787. that is coming

  788. for those who are in Christ.

  789. An inheritance.

  790. What's an inheritance?

  791. Maybe you've got

  792. inheritance coming your way,

  793. okay,

  794. one day.

  795. Some great uncle

  796. in the Bahamas,

  797. you get a phone call

  798. from a lawyer one day

  799. saying,

  800. your great uncle

  801. passed away,

  802. he left you an inheritance.

  803. What's an inheritance?

  804. It's a future blessing,

  805. it's a gift of grace

  806. that comes to you

  807. not having earned it.

  808. It's not a wage,

  809. it's not a salary,

  810. it's not a consultancy fee,

  811. you haven't earned it,

  812. it's just a gift of grace

  813. that comes to you

  814. by the kindness

  815. of some person.

  816. Paul says here,

  817. we've got an inheritance,

  818. an eternal inheritance

  819. that will never perish,

  820. it'll never spoil,

  821. it'll never fade,

  822. it won't lose its value

  823. on the stock market,

  824. okay,

  825. many people have lost

  826. a lot of money

  827. on the stock market,

  828. you'll never lose

  829. your inheritance,

  830. it cannot be taken from you,

  831. no one's got to break

  832. into your cryptocurrency account

  833. and steal it from you,

  834. the algorithms,

  835. you've got an inheritance

  836. in Christ

  837. that is coming,

  838. an eternal inheritance

  839. that can never be taken

  840. away from you.

  841. praise be to the God

  842. and Father

  843. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  844. who has blessed us

  845. in Christ

  846. with every spiritual blessing

  847. in the heavenly places.

  848. Now,

  849. why is that?

  850. Why is it

  851. that you,

  852. or I,

  853. should be blessed

  854. with all these great blessings?

  855. I mean,

  856. I'm not a very nice guy,

  857. there's nothing special

  858. about me,

  859. sorry to reveal to you,

  860. there's nothing particularly

  861. special about you,

  862. I know your parents

  863. told you that you're special,

  864. but,

  865. but,

  866. but why not everyone?

  867. Why,

  868. why not the bus driver?

  869. Why,

  870. what's,

  871. what's different?

  872. Well,

  873. there's one little phrase

  874. that appears

  875. about 15 times

  876. in this passage.

  877. I wonder if you noticed it

  878. when Iris was reading,

  879. I just couldn't hear,

  880. I couldn't help but smile

  881. at the repetition.

  882. Did you see it

  883. in your passage?

  884. Look at how many times

  885. he says the phrase

  886. in Christ,

  887. in Him,

  888. in the Beloved,

  889. in Christ Jesus.

  890. Look at verse 3,

  891. He has blessed us

  892. in Christ.

  893. Verse 4,

  894. chosen in Christ.

  895. Verse 4,

  896. made holy and blameless

  897. before Him.

  898. Verse 5,

  899. adopted as heirs

  900. through Jesus Christ.

  901. Verse 6,

  902. blessed in the Beloved.

  903. Verse 7,

  904. in the Beloved

  905. we have redemption.

  906. Through His blood

  907. we have forgiveness

  908. of sins.

  909. Verse 11,

  910. in Him we have obtained

  911. an inheritance.

  912. In Him you are sealed

  913. with the promised Holy Spirit.

  914. Do we get the message?

  915. The point is,

  916. it's all in Jesus.

  917. Every spiritual blessing,

  918. every gift of grace,

  919. everything that you want

  920. and desire

  921. and need in life

  922. is found in Christ,

  923. in Jesus.

  924. And apart from Him,

  925. you have nothing

  926. of eternal significance.

  927. Oh, you may be a billionaire,

  928. you may have houses

  929. all over the world

  930. and accolades

  931. and have your name

  932. in lights,

  933. but you'll have nothing

  934. of eternal significance,

  935. nothing that's going to last,

  936. nothing that a thousand years

  937. from now

  938. anybody's going to actually

  939. give any rocks about.

  940. Okay?

  941. Nobody's going to care.

  942. But in Christ,

  943. you have everything

  944. you need

  945. both now

  946. and for all eternity.

  947. Praise be

  948. to the God and Father

  949. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  950. who has blessed us

  951. in Christ

  952. with everything we need

  953. in the heavenly places.

  954. All this is because of Jesus.

  955. Okay,

  956. that's the first point,

  957. the blessings

  958. of being in Christ.

  959. Now, to be honest,

  960. we've only just

  961. scratched the surface.

  962. I mean,

  963. there's so much more here,

  964. right?

  965. And there's so much more

  966. that the New Testament

  967. talks about.

  968. Now, all that we said

  969. is good and true.

  970. I hope you can see

  971. it's in the Bible.

  972. I didn't make it up.

  973. But actually,

  974. that's not the main point

  975. of the passage.

  976. Everything we've just said

  977. is secondary

  978. to the main point

  979. of the passage.

  980. The main point

  981. is actually found

  982. in verse 9 and 10.

  983. We skipped over it.

  984. Look at how often

  985. Paul talks about

  986. God's plan

  987. or His purpose

  988. or His will.

  989. Okay?

  990. The main point here

  991. is God has a cosmic plan

  992. for the whole of creation

  993. that He is working towards.

  994. Look at verse 5.

  995. In love He predestined us

  996. according to the purpose

  997. of His will.

  998. Verse 11.

  999. In Him

  1000. we have obtained

  1001. an inheritance

  1002. having been predestined

  1003. according to the purpose

  1004. of Him

  1005. who works all things

  1006. according to the counsel

  1007. of His will.

  1008. In verse 9,

  1009. the great climax

  1010. in the gospel

1011. He has made known to us

1012. the mystery of His will

  1013. according to His purpose

1014. which He set forth in Christ

  1015. as a plan

1016. for the fullness of time.

1017. What Paul is telling us here

1018. is there is a great

  1019. big cosmic

  1020. universal plan,

  1021. a purpose

  1022. that will be revealed

1023. at the fullness of time,

  1024. the end of time,

  1025. to which the whole

  1026. of creation

  1027. is moving towards.

1028. There is a cosmic arc

  1029. for the whole

  1030. of the universe

  1031. that God is orchestrating

  1032. together.

  1033. So just recently

1034. we looked at the book

  1035. of Ecclesiastes,

  1036. right?

  1037. If you remember that.

1038. And we meet this guy

  1039. called Kohelet,

  1040. the teacher.

  1041. And remember his worldview?

  1042. What does Kohelet say?

  1043. Anybody?

  1044. Meaningless,

  1045. meaningless.

  1046. Everything is meaningless,

  1047. right?

  1048. You wake up,

  1049. you go to work,

  1050. you eat,

  1051. you sleep,

  1052. tomorrow you're going

1053. to do the same thing.

  1054. The sun rises,

  1055. the sun sets,

  1056. tomorrow it's going

1057. to do the same thing.

  1058. Meaningless,

  1059. meaningless.

  1060. Everything is meaningless.

  1061. Well,

  1062. Paul here

1063. looks Kohelet in the eye

  1064. and says,

  1065. you've lost your marbles.

  1066. It's not meaningless.

1067. There is a great big purpose

  1068. and a plan

  1069. for all of creation.

  1070. Nothing

  1071. is meaningless.

  1072. The problem,

  1073. of course,

1074. is that we can't see it.

  1075. We're blind to it.

  1076. Which is why

  1077. in verse 18,

  1078. in the next page,

1079. we're going to look at it

  1080. next week,

1081. Paul prays this great prayer

  1082. and he says,

  1083. God,

1084. I pray that the eyes

  1085. of their hearts

  1086. will be opened

  1087. to see the hope

  1088. of the gospel.

  1089. The problem is

1090. we can't see the great plan

  1091. which is why

  1092. we need our Bibles

  1093. because we'll never

1094. discover it on our own.

  1095. But Paul's point here

  1096. is that God

  1097. is not just this

  1098. watch keeper God.

  1099. He,

  1100. you know,

  1101. dialed up the watch

1102. and then he put it aside

  1103. and said,

1104. let me just sit back

  1105. and let life happen

  1106. on its own.

  1107. No,

  1108. God is working

  1109. all things.

  1110. There's a plan,

  1111. there's a purpose,

  1112. there's a narrative arc

1113. to which the whole world

  1114. is ended.

  1115. There's a teleos,

  1116. an end point

  1117. for all of creation.

  1118. And what is that

  1119. great end point?

1120. What is that great big plan?

  1121. Well,

  1122. look at verse 9 and 10.

1123. The point of the entire passage

  1124. and actually the point

1125. of the whole of Ephesians

1126. is here in verse 9 and 10.

  1127. It says,

  1128. God in the gospel

1129. is making known to us

1130. the mystery of his will.

  1131. So there's this will

  1132. that's been hidden

  1133. for generations.

1134. And now he's made it known

  1135. in the gospel,

  1136. according to his purpose,

  1137. which he set forth

  1138. in Christ,

  1139. a plan

  1140. for the fullness

  1141. of time.

  1142. That means when time

  1143. reaches its fulfillment,

  1144. and here it is,

  1145. to unite

  1146. all things

  1147. in Christ,

  1148. things in heaven

  1149. and on earth.

  1150. Okay,

  1151. there it is.

  1152. Paul has just revealed

  1153. the grand purpose

1154. of the whole of creation.

  1155. There is coming

  1156. a time

  1157. when God

  1158. will unite

  1159. together

  1160. in Christ

  1161. all things

  1162. in heaven

  1163. and on earth

  1164. under the headship

  1165. of Christ.

  1166. The word unite

  1167. there means

  1168. to sum up

  1169. or to bring

  1170. a summary statement,

  1171. right,

  1172. under the headship

  1173. of something.

  1174. So,

1175. if you've got your Bible,

  1176. there's a heading.

  1177. It's a summary statement,

  1178. right,

  1179. the supremacy of Christ

  1180. or the spiritual blessings

  1181. of Christ.

  1182. Paul says that

  1183. God has set forth,

  1184. he's enacted

  1185. some plan,

  1186. some purpose

  1187. that will be realized

  1188. at the fulfillment

  1189. of time.

1190. And what is that plan?

  1191. That in Christ

  1192. all things

  1193. in heaven and earth

  1194. will be brought together

  1195. under his headship,

  1196. his rule,

  1197. his leadership.

  1198. Okay,

  1199. now I know this

  1200. sounds a little bit

  1201. philosophical,

  1202. but we'll get

  1203. to the applications

  1204. in a minute.

  1205. So,

  1206. at the moment,

  1207. the world,

  1208. the universe,

  1209. is in disconnect.

  1210. There is a discord

  1211. in the universe.

  1212. Do you remember

1213. in the Garden of Eden,

  1214. God and man

  1215. dwell together,

  1216. right?

  1217. And in the book

  1218. of Revelation,

1219. at the end of the Bible,

1220. it says the dwelling place

1221. of God is with man.

  1222. There's going to be

  1223. this unity together.

  1224. But we don't see

1225. this unity at the moment.

  1226. The heavens and earth

  1227. are separated.

  1228. There's a discord.

  1229. C.S. Lewis called it

  1230. the great divorce.

  1231. There's like a breakdown

  1232. in the relationship

  1233. between heaven and earth,

  1234. God and mankind.

  1235. In fact,

  1236. all the discord

1237. that we see in the world,

  1238. racism,

  1239. sexism,

  1240. wars,

  1241. animosity,

  1242. that's just a mirror

  1243. of the breakdown

  1244. that's happened

  1245. between God and man.

  1246. It's a picture

  1247. of what's happened.

  1248. But it won't always

  1249. be like this.

1250. God is going to restore

  1251. heaven and earth together.

  1252. There's going to be

  1253. a unity.

  1254. That's why in Revelation

  1255. it says,

  1256. the dwelling place

1257. of God is with man.

  1258. It's like a marriage.

  1259. The two are going

  1260. to become one again.

1261. They're going to be reunited.

  1262. Heaven and earth

  1263. are going to be

  1264. joined together

  1265. in the one new

  1266. heaven and earth.

  1267. Reunited.

  1268. And Christ is going

  1269. to be the head.

  1270. Christ is going

1271. to be Lord of all.

  1272. Heaven and earth

  1273. are going to be

  1274. brought together

  1275. in Christ,

  1276. under Christ,

  1277. in His leadership.

  1278. Look at how

  1279. Colossians 1 says it.

  1280. For by Him,

  1281. Jesus,

  1282. all things were created

1283. in heaven and on earth,

  1284. visible and invisible,

  1285. thrones,

  1286. dominions,

  1287. rulers,

  1288. and authorities.

  1289. All things were created

  1290. through Him

  1291. and for Him.

  1292. And through Jesus,

  1293. He will reconcile

  1294. to Himself

  1295. all things,

  1296. whether on earth

  1297. or in heaven.

  1298. Right now,

  1299. Jesus is the head

  1300. of this church.

  1301. One day,

1302. He will be the head

  1303. of all the cosmos,

  1304. all creation.

  1305. For all eternity,

  1306. things will be united

  1307. under the heavens

  1308. and earth

  1309. with Christ

  1310. as the head

  1311. and the Lord.

  1312. And why is God

  1313. doing this?

  1314. What is His motivation

  1315. for it?

  1316. Well,

  1317. there's one more phrase

  1318. that Paul repeats

  1319. three times

  1320. in this passage.

  1321. I wonder if you

  1322. picked it up.

  1323. Look at verse 6.

  1324. He says,

  1325. In love,

  1326. He predestined us

  1327. for adoption,

  1328. according to purpose

  1329. of His will,

  1330. to the praise

  1331. of His glory.

  1332. Okay,

  1333. we sang about that

  1334. earlier.

  1335. Jeremy introduced

  1336. that song,

  1337. to the praise

  1338. of His glory.

  1339. Verse 11.

  1340. We have obtained

  1341. an inheritance

  1342. in Christ,

  1343. being predestined,

  1344. coined the purpose

  1345. of His will,

  1346. to the praise

  1347. of His glory.

  1348. Look at verse 14.

  1349. The Holy Spirit

  1350. is our guarantee

  1351. to the praise

  1352. of His glory.

  1353. Friends,

  1354. sometimes we feel

1355. like life is so arbitrary,

  1356. so meaningless,

  1357. so random,

  1358. right?

  1359. And Ephesians

  1360. is meant to arrest

  1361. the futility

  1362. and the randomness

  1363. of life

  1364. and say,

  1365. it's not random

  1366. at all.

  1367. God has a plan

  1368. and a purpose.

  1369. He is working

  1370. the whole of creation

  1371. together

  1372. to an end point

  1373. to unite things

  1374. all under Christ

  1375. to the praise

  1376. of His glory.

  1377. Sometimes we get

  1378. so focused

  1379. on our little lives,

  1380. our problems,

  1381. our challenges,

1382. what's in front of us,

  1383. right?

  1384. Oh,

  1385. that job promotion.

  1386. I really need

  1387. that job promotion.

  1388. Or,

  1389. the soccer scores.

  1390. What's happening

  1391. with my team?

  1392. Or,

  1393. that social media post.

  1394. Oh,

  1395. I only got 300 likes

  1396. and last time

  1397. I got 400

1398. and what's wrong with me?

  1399. Or,

  1400. maybe that text message

  1401. somebody sends you

  1402. that's not very nice

1403. and you get all worked up

1404. and you can't sleep at night

1405. and then you get all worked up

  1406. and we get consumed

  1407. with our little things

  1408. and Paul wants to

  1409. blow open

  1410. our mindset

  1411. and see,

1412. just take a step back

  1413. and seeing

  1414. the world

  1415. is not about you.

  1416. That's Paul's point here.

  1417. He says,

  1418. there is a great

  1419. cosmic purpose

  1420. and design

  1421. for all creation

1422. and it's not about you.

  1423. Yes,

  1424. you are very blessed.

  1425. We read about

  1426. all the amazing blessings.

  1427. Yes,

1428. it has implications for you

  1429. but actually

  1430. it's not about you.

  1431. God is uniting

  1432. all things together

  1433. in Christ

  1434. for the praise

  1435. of His glory.

  1436. Now,

  1437. we're coming into land.

  1438. John Stott,

1439. look at how John Stott said it.

1440. I think we should have it up here.

  1441. John Stott says this,

1442. How did we become God's people?

  1443. The answer,

  1444. according to the pleasure

  1445. of His will.

1446. And why did He make us His people?

  1447. Answer,

  1448. for the praise

  1449. of the glory

  1450. of His grace.

  1451. Everything we have

  1452. and everything we are

  1453. in Christ

  1454. comes both from God

  1455. and returns to God.

1456. It begins with His will

1457. and it ends in His glory.

  1458. For this is where

  1459. everything begins

  1460. and ends.

  1461. Friends,

  1462. what's really going on

  1463. in the world?

  1464. What's the narrative arc

  1465. of all of history?

  1466. That one day

  1467. all things

  1468. will either be

  1469. banished to hell

  1470. or united

  1471. under Christ

  1472. and His Lordship

  1473. for the praise

  1474. of His glory.

1475. and so what that means

  1476. is that

  1477. our little things

  1478. in life

  1479. don't need to consume

  1480. us anymore.

  1481. You know,

  1482. sometimes we get so,

  1483. I said fixated

  1484. in the little things

  1485. in life.

  1486. It's like

  1487. you're missing

1488. the birth of your child

  1489. because you're scrolling

  1490. on Instagram,

  1491. right?

  1492. that's a really

  1493. dumb thing to do.

  1494. Don't do that.

  1495. Nobody would do that.

  1496. Oh,

1497. but we all do it

  1498. all the time.

  1499. We miss the great

  1500. big cosmic plan

  1501. of God

  1502. because we're so fixated

  1503. on our little things

  1504. and our little problems.

  1505. Friends,

  1506. God's great cosmic plan

  1507. is to unite

  1508. all things

  1509. under Christ

  1510. to the praise

  1511. of His glory.

1512. And so as we come

  1513. to close,

  1514. let me ask you

  1515. this question.

  1516. what is the connection

  1517. between the first point,

  1518. the multitude of blessings

  1519. in Christ,

  1520. and the second point,

  1521. the purposes of God

  1522. in Christ?

1523. And the answer is this.

1524. Let me see how I wrote here.

1525. As you pick up your cross

  1526. and follow Jesus,

1527. as you give your life

1528. to what God is doing

  1529. in the world,

1530. all the blessings of God

1531. will be given to you

  1532. not as an end

  1533. of themselves

  1534. but as a foretaste

  1535. of what will be

  1536. your eternal reality

  1537. forever.

  1538. Okay,

  1539. does that make sense?

  1540. You know,

  1541. sometimes we look

  1542. at the blessings

  1543. and we say,

  1544. oh,

  1545. isn't it wonderful

  1546. I'm adopted

  1547. into God's family.

  1548. Praise God,

  1549. isn't it wonderful

1550. my sins have been forgiven?

  1551. Isn't it wonderful

1552. that I've got an inheritance

1553. with my name in it?

  1554. Wonderful.

  1555. But actually,

  1556. all those

  1557. are secondary

  1558. to those

  1559. come as a byproduct

  1560. of what God

1561. is doing in the world.

  1562. He is uniting things

  1563. under Christ.

1564. So let me give you

  1565. this analogy.

  1566. In the Ukraine

1567. there's been this terrible war

  1568. at the moment,

  1569. right?

1570. We all know about it.

  1571. Absolutely disastrous.

  1572. Just terrible.

  1573. And millions of people

1574. are needing to be evacuated

  1575. out of Ukraine.

  1576. And so imagine this,

1577. at the south of Ukraine

  1578. they say,

1579. there are all these children

  1580. and women and children,

  1581. we've got a great big ship

1582. that is going to come

  1583. and evacuate you

  1584. out of Ukraine.

1585. All you've got to do

1586. is get to this port town,

  1587. this harbor front

1588. and you will get on the ship

  1589. and be evacuated out.

  1590. And so these women

  1591. and children,

  1592. they leave

1593. and they get to the harbor

1594. and there in front of them

1595. is this great big cruise liner.

  1596. I mean,

  1597. the best cruise liner

  1598. you've ever seen.

  1599. And there's water slides

  1600. and there's basketball courts

  1601. and there's golf simulators

  1602. and there's endless food

  1603. and there's movie theaters

1604. and there's like the greatest

  1605. cruise liner

  1606. you've ever seen

  1607. in your life.

1608. And they get on the cruise ship

  1609. to be taken away

  1610. and while they're there

  1611. for three weeks

  1612. they have the time

  1613. of their life, right?

1614. But the point of the cruise liner

  1615. isn't just to have a holiday.

1616. The point isn't just to enjoy

  1617. all the benefits

  1618. and then turn around

  1619. and say,

  1620. well that was fun,

1621. let's go back to Ukraine now.

  1622. Best of luck.

1623. The point is to take them

  1624. to a new home

  1625. and there they're going

  1626. to be established

1627. and they're going to be

  1628. given new passports

  1629. and a new home

  1630. and the new home

1631. is going to be set up.

1632. A place where there is

  1633. no more war

1634. and there is no more suffering

1635. and there are no more tears

  1636. and their family

  1637. will be taken there

1638. and a whole new life

  1639. awaits them there.

1640. And for them to stay

  1641. on the cruise ship

  1642. and say,

1643. I want to stay here

1644. because this is so fun

  1645. is not the point

  1646. of being evacuated.

  1647. It's a pretty bad analogy

1648. but the point is this,

  1649. in this life

  1650. God has blessed us

  1651. amazingly,

  1652. wonderfully,

  1653. all these blessings

  1654. in Christ.

  1655. But that's not

1656. the end of the story.

1657. The end of the story

  1658. is God is orchestrating

  1659. all things.

  1660. He's making a new heavens

  1661. and a new earth.

  1662. There is a cosmic

  1663. great big plan

1664. that God has got in store

  1665. for the whole world

1666. and He plans for you

1667. to be a part of it

1668. if you are in Christ.

  1669. And the blessings

  1670. that God gives you

  1671. are not an end

  1672. in themselves,

  1673. they're a foretaste

1674. of what will be true

  1675. for you

  1676. for all eternity.

1677. And so we end off

  1678. where we started.

  1679. Praise be the God

  1680. and Father

1681. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1682. who has blessed us

  1683. in Christ

  1684. with every spiritual blessing

  1685. according to the purpose

  1686. of His will

1687. with which He set forth

  1688. in Christ

1689. for a fullness of time

  1690. to unite all things

  1691. in Him,

  1692. things in heaven

  1693. and on earth

  1694. to the praise

  1695. of His glorious grace.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. Let's pray together.

  1698. Father,

  1699. Father,

  1700. as we've looked

1701. at this very complex passage

  1702. with a multitude

  1703. of threads

  1704. and truths

  1705. and doctrinal statements,

  1706. God,

  1707. the end result

1708. is that we get on our knees

  1709. and we join

  1710. the Apostle Paul

1711. and we say all praise to You,

  1712. all glory to You

  1713. for what You've done.

  1714. God,

  1715. thank You for the

  1716. infinite blessings

1717. that we have in Christ.

  1718. God,

  1719. for those of us

1720. that are not in Christ,

  1721. I pray that You

  1722. open the eyes

  1723. of our hearts

  1724. to see You

  1725. and to know You,

  1726. to know the hope

  1727. of the gospel

  1728. and to join You,

  1729. God,

1730. in Your great big cosmic plan

  1731. for all creation.

  1732. God,

  1733. I pray that we won't

  1734. be consumed

  1735. with small,

1736. pithy things in our lives,

  1737. that our lives

  1738. won't be consumed

  1739. with Instagram posts

  1740. and other meaningless things,

  1741. that God,

  1742. You'll open the eyes

  1743. of our hearts.

  1744. You'll give us a window

  1745. into what You're doing

  1746. that we will

  1747. spend our lives,

  1748. pouring out our lives

  1749. according to Your plan

  1750. and that therein

  1751. we will be blessed.

  1752. God,

  1753. we pray this

  1754. in Your great

  1755. and Your gracious name.

  1756. Amen.
