  1. Father, we ask that your...

  2. Well, Father, we give you thanks and praise for your common grace

  3. given to human beings,

  4. whereby we, even the worst of us,

  5. manage to more or less live in the real world most of the time.

  6. But, Father, you know how deeply we end up choosing pride

  7. and self-centeredness and vanity

  8. and other types of things that blind us to what we really are like

  9. and who we really are and what the world is really like.

  10. And, Father, you know that we're usually unconscious of this in ourselves,

  11. even as we don't like it in others.

  12. We ask, Father, that in your kindness

  13. that you would pour out the Holy Spirit upon us

  14. with might and power and deep conviction,

  15. that your word would come into our heart,

  16. your gospel would come into our heart,

  17. that you would help us to see who we really are

  18. in light of your existence and in light of the gospel,

  19. and in seeing who we are,

  20. that we would love the person and work of Jesus even more

  21. and that we would, Father, allow your Holy Spirit

  22. to help us live in the real world

  23. where you are the creator and sovereign over all things.

  24. And we ask this in the name of Jesus,

  25. your Son and our Savior.

  26. Amen.

  27. Please be seated.

  28. So I changed the introduction to my sermon slightly

  29. because of what I was thinking about while I was driving in.

  30. I think it's the case that five or ten years ago,

  31. so sometimes I think to myself,

  32. what could you say to a Canadian to insult them?

  33. I mean, I managed to insult people without thinking about it far too often,

  34. but if you actually wanted to insult a Canadian,

  35. what were some of the ways that you could consult an average Canadian

  36. and probably an average American?

  37. And I think five or ten years ago,

  38. a comment, if you were to say to a Canadian

  39. that they do not live in the real world,

  40. that they're not living in the real world,

  41. that that would be an insult to them.

  42. But I'm not sure if it would still be an insult to a lot of Canadians,

  43. to tell you the truth.

  44. I was thinking about it while I was driving in.

  45. Now, you know, by the way,

  46. to say that you're not living in the real world,

  47. that doesn't mean, like in the real world,

  48. it doesn't mean that there's not imagination

  49. or whimsy or playfulness or hope.

  50. But today, the idea that what matters is my reality,

  51. what matters is my reality,

  52. that's such a powerful idea

  53. for a large number of people in our culture.

  54. I don't know if it would actually be an insult to them

  55. if you said to them that they're not living in the real world.

  56. They might say, who cares about the real world?

  57. What matters is my reality.

  58. I don't know, you can talk about it over coffee,

  59. whether, in fact, that's a thing,

  60. and whether, in fact, even for people

  61. who would very highly insist on the fact

  62. that what matters isn't whatever reality is,

  63. is my reality was what really, really matters.

  64. The fact of the matter is,

  65. is if I'm right that there are now,

  66. that that wouldn't actually be an insult to a lot of Canadians.

  67. Christianity very clearly comes down to

  68. on one side of that particular issue.

  69. I mean, it might be a surprise.

  70. There was a long op-ed piece

  71. in the National Post a week or so ago,

  72. two Saturdays ago,

  73. sort of perpetuating this idea

  74. that people like Christians are opposed to reason

  75. and science and knowledge

  76. and all of that type of stuff.

  77. It was a remarkably uninformed piece

  78. written by a retired university president.

  79. But it might be a surprise to people

  80. to know that Christianity comes down

  81. very, very firmly and clearly on this side,

  82. that people should want to know

  83. what the real world is

  84. and that we should want to try to live in the real world

  85. and deal with the real world.

  86. And so today we're going to look

  87. at a very, very interesting story.

  88. And the first part of the story

  89. is one of those stories,

  90. I'll just be very honest,

  91. when I'm doing my devotions,

  92. probably when I come to a story like this,

  93. it's the first 10 verses

  94. have the names of nine kings,

  95. all of them unpronounceable names,

  96. all unpronounceable people groups,

  97. all things that you don't have any idea

  98. really who they are other than the odd word.

  99. And I'll just be honest,

  100. if I was reading this in my devotions,

  101. I'd sort of yada, yada, yada, yada, yada.

  102. And by the time I actually got to the stuff

  103. which is sort of just easy to follow,

  104. I'd gotten so accustomed

  105. to not really paying attention,

  106. I might miss it.

  107. But it's a very, very simple story

  108. and very powerful story

  109. that portrays two different ways to live,

  110. living in the real world

  111. and living not in the real world.

  112. Because the fact of the matter is,

  113. is that even for those of us

  114. and those Canadians

  115. who desire to want to live in the real world,

  116. we would acknowledge

  117. that it can sometimes be very hard

  118. to live in the real world

  119. because there are things

  120. which are impediments

  121. to living in the real world.

  122. And so this is a very interesting story

  123. that speaks directly

  124. to this particular issue.

  125. So we're going to look at it.

  126. But now before I tell you

  127. to turn in your Bibles,

  128. well here, actually,

  129. I'll just give you a sample.

  130. This is how Genesis 14 begins.

  131. It's not going to be on the screen.

  132. In the days of Amraphel,

  133. king of Shinar,

  134. Ariarch, king of Elessar,

  135. Chedilo, Omer, king of...

  136. Okay, you're already gone to sleep, right?

  137. You got my...

  138. So here's what's going to go.

  139. If you just put up Claire on the screen,

  140. I paid thousands of dollars for this map,

  141. just the licensing arrangements.

  142. I wrote this myself.

  143. Probably all of you can gather that.

  144. And all of you will be saying,

  145. George, don't quit your day job.

  146. But simply put,

  147. this map sort of helps you to understand

  148. what the first part of Genesis 14 is saying.

  149. And then we're going to turn to Genesis 11

  150. to pick up the story.

  151. And so basically what's talking about

  152. is there's a group of four kings

  153. and they're all from a people group

  154. called Mesopotamia.

  155. And that's at the very top of the map.

  156. And Mesopotamia, in a sense, is off the map.

  157. At the day we would know it as Turkey,

  158. Iraq, Iran,

  159. those countries sort of in that region

  160. of what we now call Iran,

  161. what we now call Iraq,

  162. what we call Turkey,

  163. that would, in the time of this history,

  164. would have been known as Mesopotamia.

  165. And that's a different people group,

  166. a very ancient civilizations there.

  167. And if you sort of look down,

  168. there's a reddish circle with five X's.

  169. Those are five city-states.

  170. And sort of basically,

  171. most of the things you see in the map

  172. are what we would call Canaanites.

  173. But these five kings

  174. are the five kings that are mentioned.

  175. That's sort of the area that they ruled.

  176. And what's going on here

  177. is something as old as the hills

  178. and as modern as the daily news.

  179. The empire, or the kings,

  180. of Mesopotamia,

  181. 14 years prior,

  182. have subjugated probably the area

  183. just to the right of that line,

  184. which is supposed to be the Jordan River,

  185. including subjugating that area

  186. with the five X's,

  187. the five Canaanite kings.

  188. They've subjugated it.

  189. And so the people in that area,

  190. in the red circle,

  191. they have to be paying tribute

  192. to the people up in Mesopotamia,

  193. different people group.

  194. And then after they've been doing that

  195. for 12 years,

  196. once again,

  197. this is just like the modern news.

  198. They say,

  199. we're going to stop paying money for that.

  200. You know, they're far away.

  201. We can take them.

  202. We can kick their butt

  203. if they come back down here.

  204. You know, lots of chest thumping

  205. and all of that type of stuff.

  206. And so they stop paying any money.

  207. It takes a year for them to figure it out

  208. because back then they didn't have CNN.

  209. They didn't have Fox News.

  210. They didn't have BBC World Report

  211. or Twitter or Instagram.

  212. So it took them a year to figure that out.

  213. Takes them a while to get their army to come down.

  214. And the guys up in Mesopotamia said,

  215. we're going to recover that area

  216. because we like getting tribute

  217. and we like being in power

  218. and we like being in control,

  219. just like the news today, right?

  220. So what they do is that long orange line.

  221. They don't actually directly attack

  222. the Canaanite kings first.

  223. What they do is go slightly

  224. to the east of them,

  225. which is right for you folks.

  226. And they go and then what you see

  227. in the first part of Genesis 14

  228. is they conquer,

  229. they plunder and pillage

  230. and war and defeat

  231. a whole pile of people groups

  232. and tribal groups

  233. all the way down that orange line,

  234. all the way to the south,

  235. almost to Egypt.

  236. And then they decide

  237. they're going to start heading up

  238. because now they're going to go

  239. after the five guys

  240. that they'd previously conquered

  241. that were now trying to flex their muscles

  242. and say they could just ignore

  243. the people from Mesopotamia.

  244. And hopefully you can see there,

  245. I say battle,

  246. hopefully you can see that.

  247. The five kings,

  248. they move sort of down

  249. to meet the oncoming

  250. Mesopotamian kings.

  251. They fight a big battle,

  252. right?

  253. Where I say battle.

  254. And as we're going to see in a moment,

  255. the five kings,

  256. they get their butts kicked.

  257. They get very,

  258. very clearly defeated.

  259. In fact,

  260. there's even a thing,

  261. they talk about the tar pits being there

  262. and even the natural environment

  263. that I guess the kings had hoped

  264. would work in their advantage

  265. actually works to their disadvantage.

  266. People die in those pits.

  267. The kings flee.

  268. I'm sort of jumping ahead a little bit

  269. for a couple of verses.

  270. What I don't show you here

  271. because I couldn't figure out

  272. how to draw it

  273. is the kings from Mesopotamia,

  274. then they go and they basically sack,

  275. pillage,

  276. and plunder

  277. those five Canaanite cities, states.

  278. But then rather than going

  279. all up on north,

  280. right there,

  281. they sort of loop around

  282. and go back

  283. on the other side,

  284. the left-hand side of that line,

  285. the Jordan River,

  286. and they start heading back

  287. to Mesopotamia.

  288. They'd obviously be moving slow

  289. because they have lots of plunder,

  290. lots of treasure,

  291. lots of slaves.

  292. Either people they're going to keep as slaves

  293. or something that they would have done

  294. back in those days.

  295. If you found a rich person,

  296. you would take them away

  297. and hope that you could

  298. have them,

  299. sell them back for ransom

  300. to their family.

  301. So that's what they're all doing.

  302. They've won the battle.

  303. They're heading back.

  304. You can see the green line

  305. is where Abram lives,

  306. is at the bottom.

  307. And as you're going to see in a moment,

  308. he's going to go back up

  309. and there's going to be a battle

  310. and that's sort of what's going on

  311. in the story

  312. without all the names.

  313. So now let's look at the text.

  314. Sorry, that was a long,

  315. but one of the interesting things about it

  316. is once you sort of get over

  317. the problems with the names

  318. is, as I said,

  319. I mean, this is the Russian Ukraine.

  320. This is China and Taiwan.

  321. This is what's going on in Afghanistan.

  322. It's what's going on

  323. in the failed states

  324. of Northern Africa

  325. and the failed states

  326. of the Middle East.

  327. That's what's going on.

  328. There's people, warlords,

  329. who claim authority over others.

  330. They're willing to go to war

  331. and fight over it

  332. and exercise their power and authority.

  333. So this is a very, very ancient problem

  334. and it's a very, very contemporary problem.

  335. It's always been present.

  336. It was present here

  337. amongst the First Nations people groups

  338. that were here

  339. before those from Europe discovered it.

  340. The First Nations tribes

  341. fought battles against each other,

  342. took plunder, took slaves.

  343. It's a part of common human history.

  344. And so what happens now?

  345. Well, what happens now?

  346. Let's begin reading at verse 11

  347. and we'll sort of recap

  348. some of that there.

  349. Verse 11.

  350. So the enemy,

  351. that is the Mesopotamians,

  352. took all the possessions

  353. of Sodom and Gomorrah

  354. and all their provisions

  355. and went their way.

  356. They also took Lot,

  357. the son of Abram's brother,

  358. who was dwelling in Sodom

  359. and his possessions

  360. and went their way.

  361. So in the last story,

  362. we see that Lot had separated from Abram

  363. and lived near Sodom.

  364. Now we discover that he'd gone

  365. from living near Sodom

  366. to living in Sodom.

  367. And that's going to be important.

  368. There's going to be two whole chapters

  369. taken up later

  370. with the whole issue

  371. of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  372. And for many of you,

  373. whether you're watching this

  374. and you have very little

  375. Christian background,

  376. you've probably heard

  377. of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  378. And we're going to be looking at

  379. in a couple of weeks.

  380. But that's what happened.

  381. So now here's the sort of

  382. the question.

  383. I've given it away a little bit.

  384. But what's Abram going to do

  385. if he finds out about it?

  386. Well, let's look.

  387. Verse 13.

  388. Then one who had escaped

  389. came and told Abram the Hebrew,

  390. who is living by the oaks

  391. of Mamre, the Amorite,

  392. brother of Eschol and Aner.

  393. These were allies of Abram.

  394. So what's Abram now finds out

  395. that his nephew Lot's been captured.

  396. Now what's going to happen here?

  397. Now, here's one of the things

  398. about this story.

  399. If you go back

  400. and you look at chapter 12

  401. in particular,

  402. but also chapter 13,

  403. you'll see that Abram has been promised,

  404. has been blessed by God.

  405. Abram has been promised

  406. that his offspring,

  407. that he will produce

  408. a mighty nation,

  409. not that he will produce

  410. a mighty nation, not Lot.

  411. He, it will come from,

  412. in a sense, him and Sarah

  413. will be the source

  414. of new life

  415. that will create

  416. many, many, many descendants

  417. and that they will eventually

  418. completely and utterly

  419. possess the land.

  420. And that blessing

  421. has been promised

  422. in chapter 12

  423. and in chapter 13.

  424. It's just going to be

  425. his offspring.

  426. And as well as that,

  427. Lot had already

  428. separated from Abram

  429. and taken the best land.

  430. And now he's sort of screwed up

  431. and he's captured by

  432. the forces of Mesopotamia.

  433. So what's Abram going to do?

  434. Now, one of the,

  435. how can I put it?

  436. Not stereotypes.

  437. One of the concerns

  438. that people have,

  439. Canadians have,

  440. when they hear about Christianity,

  441. this idea that

  442. if I give my life to Christ,

  443. if I accept Christ

  444. as my Savior and Lord,

  445. that I'm going to go to heaven,

  446. that, you know,

  447. he's done everything

  448. that has to be done for me

  449. to make me right with God,

  450. there's sort of the idea,

  451. and it's also sort of common

  452. with it,

  453. because there's a very similar

  454. type of idea here.

  455. I just,

  456. Abram hasn't done anything

  457. to deserve this blessing.

  458. He's not particularly special.

  459. God just gives it to him.

  460. And there's a very,

  461. very common idea

  462. that this idea

  463. is going to produce

  464. arrogance and indifference,

  465. and maybe even violence.

  466. I mean,

  467. Abram's been promised by God,

  468. the triune God,

  469. that he's going to have

  470. all these things happen to him,

  471. the land's going to all have him.

  472. Like,

  473. how can that not,

  474. people will think,

  475. how can that not create

  476. within the mind

  477. of the people who hear that

  478. a type of arrogance

  479. and a type of self-centeredness

  480. and an indifference

  481. to those who are outside

  482. of, in a sense,

  483. your tribe.

  484. And,

  485. now,

  486. part of the problem

  487. when people think this

  488. is they sort of forget

  489. for a second

  490. that arrogance

  491. and indifference

  492. is a human problem.

  493. Like,

  494. arrogance and indifference

  495. is a human problem.

  496. It's not as if

  497. just people who understand

  498. the Christian faith

  499. have a problem

  500. with arrogance and indifference

  501. and the rest of the world

  502. is free of it.

  503. No,

  504. the fact of the matter is

  505. is that arrogance and indifference

  506. is a human problem.

  507. It's common

  508. whether you're a Buddhist,

  509. an atheist,

  510. a Hindu,

  511. a Muslim,

  512. believe in some

  513. ancient religion.

  514. That really,

  515. the question is,

  516. does somehow or another

  517. these Christian ideas

  518. which are seen here,

  519. does it make it worse?

  520. Or is,

  521. in fact,

  522. the case that there's

  523. something unique

  524. about this idea

  525. of blessing

  526. that's seen here in Abram

  527. and also seen in the Gospel

  528. that actually works

  529. against arrogance

  530. and indifference

  531. and violence?

  532. So,

  533. what happens?

  534. Well,

  535. if we look here at verse,

  536. we've just heard that

  537. Abram has now heard about it.

  538. How is he going to react?

  539. He remembers the blessing,

  540. he remembers the grace,

  541. he remembers the promise,

  542. he's living at a place

  543. where he has an altar,

  544. and that means

  545. he can regularly go

  546. and worship the God

  547. who's pronounced

  548. these blessings over him.

  549. He can be reminded of it,

  550. he can recommit to it,

  551. he can recommit to this God.

  552. So,

  553. what's Abram's response

  554. to hearing about

  555. the great destruction

  556. that's happened

  557. to these five pagan cities

  558. and the other areas,

  559. and the fact

  560. that his nephew Lot

  561. has been captured?

  562. Well,

  563. we find out

  564. what his response is

  565. in verse 14.

  566. When Abram heard

  567. that his kinsmen

  568. had been taken captive,

  569. he led forth

  570. his trained men

  571. born in his house,

  572. 318 of them.

  573. Sort of curious.

  574. It's not 315

  575. or 319,

  576. but 318.

  577. He took the 318 of them

  578. and he went in pursuit

  579. as far as Dan.

  580. And he divided his forces

  581. against them by night,

  582. he and his servants,

  583. and he defeated

  584. the Mesopotamians.

  585. He defeats them.

  586. This same four kings

  587. who rule sort of

  588. a very large empire,

  589. who have defeated

  590. all the people groups

  591. to the east

  592. and all the way

  593. to the south

  594. and then defeated

  595. these five Canaanite kings

  596. and then they've got

  597. enough plunder,

  598. they've made their point

  599. with the Canaanite kings,

  600. they now have more area.

  601. Abram defeats them.

  602. And not only does he defeat them,

  603. he pursues them

  604. to Hobah,

  605. north of Damascus.

  606. Then he brought back

  607. all the possessions

  608. and also brought back

  609. his kinsmen Lot

  610. with his possessions

  611. and the women

  612. and the people.

  613. So once again,

  614. these Mesopotamian kings

  615. who plundered

  616. and looted

  617. all of these people groups,

  618. including Sodom and Gomorrah,

  619. Abram,

  620. with these three other

  621. allies of him,

  622. a far smaller force,

  623. were able to defeat

  624. the Mesopotamians

  625. and now they are taking

  626. a slow journey back

  627. with the animals

  628. that have been captured,

  629. the women and children

  630. and some of the men

  631. who've been captured,

  632. and they're bringing

  633. all of that back

  634. towards where Abram lives

  635. on the way

  636. to these people

  637. being able to be resettled

  638. in their Canaanite

  639. and pagan areas.

  640. And you see,

  641. one of the things,

  642. if you just pause

  643. for a second,

  644. what you see

  645. in this story

  646. a little bit,

  647. we're going to get

  648. to the two different ways

  649. to live

  650. and whether you live

  651. in the real world

  652. or not,

  653. but the point

  654. of the blessing

  655. that you go back,

  656. if you read Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  657. chapter 12,

  658. the verses 2 and 3,

  659. and then you read

  660. verse 7,

  661. and you read

  662. how this blessing,

  663. this grace,

  664. is sort of reinforced

  665. and reenacted

  666. and deepened

  667. at the end

  668. of chapter 13,

  669. it's all completely,

  670. it's not something

  671. as a result

  672. of what Abram's

  673. accomplished.

  674. The blessing

  675. has no connection

  676. to his accomplishments,

  677. it's not earned,

  678. it's undeserved.

  679. And the fact

  680. of the matter

  681. is,

  682. is it's the particular

  683. nature of being

  684. blessed by God

  685. in a way

  686. which is unearned,

  687. undeserved,

  688. has nothing to do

  689. with your accomplishment,

  690. that as that

  691. becomes more real

  692. to you,

  693. as that becomes

  694. more real to me,

  695. it undermines

  696. both pride

  697. and religion.

  698. You see,

  699. religion,

  700. all religion,

  701. all spirituality,

  702. is always based

  703. on us

  704. accomplishing something.

  705. If you're a Buddhist,

  706. you're going to accomplish

  707. one set of things,

  708. if you're a Hindu,

  709. you'll accomplish

  710. a different set of things,

  711. if you're a Muslim,

  712. you'll accomplish

  713. a different set of things,

  714. if you have your

  715. bespoke spirituality

  716. here in North America,

  717. you'll have your own

  718. set of things

  719. that you have to

  720. accomplish,

  721. but you accomplish

  722. certain types of things

  723. to make yourself

  724. right with God.

  725. And that will always

  726. coexist with pride.

  727. Because good grief,

  728. you've done it,

  729. haven't you?

  730. And it will often

  731. go against,

  732. it will often

  733. connect with

  734. not only pride,

  735. but image management

  736. and make-believe.

  737. Because in your

  738. heart of hearts,

  739. you know that you

  740. haven't accomplished

  741. as much as you

  742. think you have,

  743. you're not quite as

  744. good as you,

  745. you actually aren't

  746. really as good

  747. as you like people

  748. to think you are

  749. and you want to

  750. have God think you are.

  751. So you become

  752. very concerned,

  753. even with whether

  754. you're conscious

  755. of it or not,

  756. with image management.

  757. And you sort of

  758. might even deceive

  759. yourself that you're

  760. far better than you

  761. actually are.

  762. But when you come

  763. across a blessing

  764. like this and the

  765. blessing of the gospel,

  766. which is very,

  767. very similar,

  768. in a sense,

  769. the blessing of Abraham

  770. is looking forward

  771. forward to this

  772. profound act of

  773. rescue that God

  774. will do in the

  775. person of his son,

  776. which is Jesus'

  777. death upon the

  778. cross.

  779. As the truth of

  780. this blessing comes

  781. home to you,

  782. that I didn't earn

  783. it,

  784. I didn't accomplish

  785. it,

  786. I don't deserve

  787. it,

  788. and yet God has

  789. given this to me

  790. as a gift,

  791. that in fact

  792. begins to not

  793. only undermine

  794. pride,

  795. but it

  796. undermines

  797. religion.

  798. One of the

  799. popular things

  800. that go on in

  801. our culture now

  802. to deal with

  803. our psychological

  804. and other problems

  805. is the practice

  806. of mindfulness.

  807. It's usually a

  808. Western adaptation

  809. of things come

  810. from Buddhism.

  811. It's often tried

  812. to be taught now

  813. in different

  814. therapies,

  815. and at the

  816. heart of

  817. mindfulness,

  818. I mean,

  819. there's different

  820. aspects to it,

  821. but part of

  822. it is that

  823. you,

  824. in a sense,

  825. try to

  826. disconnect

  827. from yourself

  828. and get to

  829. a place where

  830. you can just

  831. observe yourself,

  832. observe the

  833. flow of what's

  834. going on,

  835. and maybe as

  836. you observe

  837. what's going

  838. on,

  839. you'll follow

  840. like some

  841. of Jordan

  842. Peterson's

  843. advice,

  844. not that he's

  845. specifically

  846. talking about

  847. mindfulness,

  848. but of being

  849. friendly towards

  850. yourself,

  851. of wishing the

  852. best for

  853. yourself,

  854. but you try

  855. to go to a

  856. place where

  857. you can just

  858. observe what's

  859. happening in

  860. your life from

  861. a place

  862. within you

  863. to just

  864. observe

  865. yourself,

  866. and watch

  867. the flow of

  868. what's going

  869. through you

  870. and your

  871. thoughts and

  872. your emotions

  873. and stuff like

  874. that.

  875. But the big

  876. problem with it,

  877. I really became

  878. aware of this,

  879. believe it or not,

  880. by reading a

  881. non-Christian

  882. writer by the

  883. name of Peter

  884. Robinson,

  885. who talks about

  886. this several

  887. times in his

  888. book,

  889. where one of

  890. the characters

  891. in his book

  892. is a person

  893. who practices

  894. this,

  895. and Peter

  896. Robinson has

  897. his main

  898. sort of hero

  899. of the stories

  900. talk about the

  901. fact that she

  902. used that

  903. regularly to

  904. give herself a

  905. pass on the

  906. things that she

  907. had done to

  908. hurt people,

  909. to create

  910. excuses.

  911. See,

  912. the problem

  913. with it is

  914. that if

  915. yourself is

  916. still proud

  917. and prone

  918. to self-deception,

  919. then all

  920. you've done

  921. is created,

  922. in a sense,

  923. a place of

  924. pride to

  925. observe your

  926. life,

  927. a place to

  928. sort of

  929. separate the

  930. real you,

  931. the one who's

  932. observing from

  933. the you that

  934. does things,

  935. and it

  936. ends up

  937. actually,

  938. it doesn't

  939. end up really

  940. dealing with

  941. pride or

  942. selfishness or

  943. self-centeredness,

  944. it becomes a

  945. means by which

  946. you can sort of

  947. fool yourself

  948. about what's

  949. going on in

  950. your life,

  951. and your

  952. responsibility for

  953. what you've

  954. done.

  955. You see,

  956. in a sense,

  957. what it's

  958. trying to do

  959. is it's

  960. trying to

  961. create a

  962. substitute for

  963. the biblical

  964. doctrine of

  965. grace.

  966. You see,

  967. what grace

  968. creates for

  969. us,

  970. if we

  971. understand

  972. that this

  973. blessing that's

  974. been promised

  975. in Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  976. chapter 12,

  977. that I'm

  978. going to,

  979. you know,

  980. Abram,

  981. you don't

  982. deserve it,

  983. you don't

  984. merit it,

  985. you have an

  986. accomplished

  987. anything,

  988. I'm going

  989. to give

  990. my favor

  991. upon you,

  992. through you

  993. and through

  994. the seed,

  995. so to speak,

  996. the offspring

  997. that come

  998. from you,

  999. there will

  1000. be some

  1001. offspring that

  1002. eventually

  1003. develop,

  1004. some means

  1005. by which all

  1006. of the world

  1007. will be

  1008. blessed,

  1009. that people

  1010. will bless

  1011. themselves for

  1012. you,

  1013. I'm going

  1014. to bless

  1015. you so

  1016. you're going

  1017. to be a

  1018. blessing,

  1019. it's completely

  1020. undeserved,

  1021. and that's

  1022. looking forward

  1023. to this day

  1024. down the road

  1025. which is now

  1026. past for us,

  1027. Abram in a

  1028. sense is looking

  1029. at it in

  1030. faith in the

  1031. future,

  1032. we now remember

  1033. it in the

  1034. past,

  1035. where when

  1036. Jesus dies

  1037. upon the

  1038. cross for

  1039. us,

  1040. every wrong

  1041. thing that I've

  1042. ever done has

  1043. been dealt

  1044. with by him,

  1045. and the life

  1046. that I wasn't

  1047. able to live,

  1048. he lives for

  1049. me,

  1050. and when I put

  1051. my hand in

  1052. his,

  1053. and trust him

  1054. as my savior

  1055. and lord,

  1056. in a sense the

  1057. life that I

  1058. couldn't live

  1059. but should have

  1060. lived becomes

  1061. mine,

  1062. and the

  1063. consequences of

  1064. my bad

  1065. actions,

  1066. which if you

  1067. add them all

  1068. up I can't

  1069. possibly pay

  1070. for them,

  1071. he pays the

  1072. price of that,

  1073. and I have

  1074. this gift of

  1075. righteousness and

  1076. being right with

  1077. God that comes

  1078. to me unmerited,

  1079. undeserved,

  1080. unearned,

  1081. and it comes to

  1082. me from the

  1083. God who knows

  1084. every single

  1085. thing there is

  1086. to know about

  1087. me,

  1088. he knows every

  1089. dream I have

  1090. at night that

  1091. I don't remember,

  1092. he knows every

  1093. mask,

  1094. every self

  1095. deception,

  1096. all the

  1097. unreality,

  1098. every single

  1099. thing about me

  1100. from the moment

  1101. that I can make

  1102. moral choices

  1103. to the moment

  1104. of my death,

  1105. all of those

  1106. are dealt

  1107. with in the

  1108. cross,

  1109. and it's as

  1110. that promise

  1111. grasps you,

  1112. that you begin

  1113. to have a place

  1114. where you can

  1115. look at your

  1116. life,

  1117. and you can

  1118. observe,

  1119. gosh I was

  1120. selfish yesterday,

  1121. or gosh I was

  1122. self-centered,

  1123. or gosh I just

  1124. don't want to

  1125. really,

  1126. gosh I'm

  1127. prayerless,

  1128. or gosh I'm

  1129. taking credit

  1130. for that,

  1131. and I don't

  1132. know where it

  1133. came from that

  1134. idea,

  1135. I should really

  1136. be giving,

  1137. like it provides

  1138. a place where

  1139. we can actually

  1140. look at ourselves

  1141. in the security

  1142. of God's grace

  1143. and blessing,

  1144. it can begin

  1145. to,

  1146. unlike

  1147. mindfulness

  1148. which can

  1149. actually just

  1150. create a type

  1151. of self-flattering,

  1152. grace can

  1153. place,

  1154. create a

  1155. humble place,

  1156. a humble

  1157. place,

  1158. not just a

  1159. place,

  1160. because you're

  1161. not just by

  1162. yourself,

  1163. you're with

  1164. him,

  1165. you're with

  1166. Christ,

  1167. in the power

  1168. of the Holy

  1169. Spirit to

  1170. observe

  1171. who you

  1172. really are,

  1173. and respond

  1174. then with

  1175. repentance,

  1176. or with

  1177. gratitude,

  1178. or with

  1179. praise.

  1180. grace.

  1181. Now,

  1182. this story

  1183. takes a

  1184. sudden turn,

  1185. I have to

  1186. watch my

  1187. time,

  1188. this story

  1189. takes a

  1190. sudden turn,

  1191. but it just

  1192. ended here,

  1193. I guess what I

  1194. was just

  1195. telling you,

  1196. that would

  1197. sort of be

  1198. the end of

  1199. the sermon,

  1200. but it

  1201. takes a

  1202. very,

  1203. very sudden

  1204. turn,

  1205. and it

  1206. shows before

  1207. us a

  1208. deepening of

  1209. what I've

  1210. just tried to

  1211. communicate to

  1212. you,

  1213. which is two

  1214. different ways

  1215. of living in

  1216. the world.

  1217. A world

  1218. where it's

  1219. pride-driven

  1220. self-deception

  1221. and self-centeredness,

  1222. or a way of

  1223. living which is

  1224. in the real

  1225. world,

  1226. which acknowledges

  1227. that God is

  1228. the creator and

  1229. possessor of all

  1230. things,

  1231. and that unless

  1232. he bestows upon

  1233. us grace and

  1234. blessing,

  1235. we can't really

  1236. live.

  1237. What do I

  1238. mean?

  1239. Well,

  1240. let's just

  1241. look at it.

  1242. Look at

  1243. verse 17.

  1244. So,

  1245. Abram has

  1246. defeated

  1247. these with

  1248. his 318

  1249. men and

  1250. his three

  1251. little allies.

  1252. They've

  1253. defeated the

  1254. Mesopotamian

  1255. kings that

  1256. have defeated

  1257. multiple people

  1258. groups and

  1259. these five

  1260. kings of

  1261. these city

  1262. states.

  1263. He's

  1264. acted with

  1265. the blessing

  1266. hasn't made

  1267. him indifferent

  1268. to Lot,

  1269. but made

  1270. him sacrificially

  1271. concerned to

  1272. rescue Lot.

  1273. The blessing

  1274. hasn't made

  1275. him indifferent

  1276. to the

  1277. pagans,

  1278. the Canaanites,

  1279. the people

  1280. very different

  1281. from him

  1282. who live in

  1283. the region.

  1284. The blessing

  1285. has made him

  1286. have a heart

  1287. for them,

  1288. to desire to

  1289. liberate them,

  1290. and to bring

  1291. them back to

  1292. where they live.

  1293. And that is

  1294. what has

  1295. happened.

  1296. And in

  1297. verse 17,

  1298. after his

  1299. return from

  1300. the defeat

  1301. of

  1302. King

  1303. C.H.

  1304. and the

  1305. kings who

  1306. were with

  1307. him,

  1308. the king

  1309. of Sodom

  1310. went out

  1311. to meet

  1312. Abram

  1313. at the

  1314. valley of

  1315. Shaveh,

  1316. that is the

  1317. king's

  1318. valley.

  1319. Now you

  1320. can't really

  1321. see this in

  1322. English,

  1323. but once you

  1324. go back in

  1325. a few verses

  1326. we're going to

  1327. read about

  1328. what the

  1329. king of

  1330. Sodom

  1331. says.

  1332. But in

  1333. the original

  1334. language,

  1335. there's a

  1336. way to

  1337. communicate

  1338. that he

  1339. is coming

  1340. not with

  1341. gratitude,

  1342. not with

  1343. humility,

  1344. not with

  1345. thankfulness,

  1346. but with

  1347. pride.

  1348. That's in

  1349. the original

  1350. language,

  1351. it can't be

  1352. communicated in

  1353. English,

  1354. but you're

  1355. going to

  1356. capture it

  1357. again in

  1358. a moment

  1359. when we

  1360. see the

  1361. things he

  1362. says.

  1363. But Abram

  1364. isn't just

  1365. met by the

  1366. king of

  1367. Sodom,

  1368. he's also

  1369. met by this

  1370. other mysterious

  1371. character that

  1372. just sort of

  1373. appears out of

  1374. nowhere,

  1375. disappears.

  1376. He'll be

  1377. mentioned in

  1378. a very,

  1379. very important

  1380. psalm called

  1381. Psalm 110,

  1382. which I think

  1383. is the most

  1384. quoted piece of

  1385. the Old Testament

  1386. in the New

  1387. Testament.

  1388. And in

  1389. Hebrews chapter

  1390. six and

  1391. seven,

  1392. the writer

  1393. will make a

  1394. big deal of

  1395. what goes on

  1396. here.

  1397. But in

  1398. verse 18,

  1399. the other

  1400. person who

  1401. meets,

  1402. comes to

  1403. meet,

  1404. they don't

  1405. travel together,

  1406. but he also

  1407. ends up meeting

  1408. Abram at the

  1409. same time.

  1410. Verse 18 is

  1411. Melchizedek,

  1412. king of

  1413. Salem.

  1414. And Melchizedek

  1415. means righteousness

  1416. or being right

  1417. with God.

  1418. And Salem

  1419. means peace.

  1420. And in

  1421. the ancient

  1422. world,

  1423. you can't

  1424. really have

  1425. peace unless

  1426. you have

  1427. peace with

  1428. God.

  1429. So you

  1430. have this

  1431. priest king.

  1432. Salem is

  1433. probably a

  1434. short form for

  1435. Jerusalem.

  1436. This priest

  1437. king from

  1438. a small

  1439. place called

  1440. Jerusalem,

  1441. who's named

  1442. righteousness,

  1443. and he's the

  1444. king of

  1445. peace.

  1446. and he

  1447. brings out

  1448. bread and

  1449. wine.

  1450. And bread

  1451. and wine is

  1452. a, sorry,

  1453. here's a geek

  1454. moment.

  1455. It's called a

  1456. merism.

  1457. It, sorry,

  1458. that's a geek

  1459. moment.

  1460. I put some

  1461. of you to

  1462. sleep.

  1463. It's like if

  1464. you say you're

  1465. searching high

  1466. and low,

  1467. high and low

  1468. is a merism.

  1469. It means that

  1470. you're searching

  1471. high, low,

  1472. and everywhere

  1473. in between.

  1474. And so when

  1475. it says bread

  1476. and wine,

  1477. it's the

  1478. language of a

  1479. feast.

  1480. In other

  1481. words,

  1482. everything from

  1483. the wine to

  1484. the simplest

  1485. little thing,

  1486. like the

  1487. bread to

  1488. the most

  1489. expensive wine

  1490. and everything

  1491. in between,

  1492. it's a way of

  1493. referring to a

  1494. banquet.

  1495. So this

  1496. mysterious king

  1497. of Salem,

  1498. whose name is

  1499. righteousness and

  1500. Salem means

  1501. peace,

  1502. he comes to

  1503. meet Abram and

  1504. he brings out

  1505. a feast.

  1506. And we also

  1507. discover that he

  1508. was priest of

  1509. God most high.

  1510. And in

  1511. verse 19,

  1512. this priest

  1513. blesses

  1514. Abraham.

  1515. In other

  1516. words,

  1517. he's going to

  1518. pronounce this

  1519. most high God's

  1520. name over

  1521. Abram.

  1522. And this

  1523. representative of

  1524. the most high

  1525. God is going to

  1526. explain what has

  1527. happened in the

  1528. story.

  1529. He's going to

  1530. reveal to

  1531. Abram what's

  1532. really happened.

  1533. And what we

  1534. see has really

  1535. happened is that

  1536. blessed be

  1537. Abram by God

  1538. most high,

  1539. possessor of

  1540. heaven and

  1541. earth.

  1542. And you'll,

  1543. some of your

  1544. Bibles,

  1545. if you have

  1546. your Bibles,

  1547. you'll see

  1548. there's a

  1549. little note.

  1550. There's no

  1551. single word

  1552. that you can

  1553. translate the

  1554. Hebrew into.

  1555. And so it

  1556. could either be

  1557. translated as

  1558. possessor of

  1559. heaven and

  1560. earth or

  1561. creator of

  1562. heaven and

  1563. earth.

  1564. It's the

  1565. same idea.

  1566. So there's

  1567. the God

  1568. most high,

  1569. who's both

  1570. created the

  1571. earth and

  1572. possesses it

  1573. currently,

  1574. everything from

  1575. the highest

  1576. heavens to

  1577. the lowest

  1578. earth, so

  1579. everything in

  1580. between, all

  1581. that exists,

  1582. this most

  1583. high God

  1584. who's created

  1585. all things and

  1586. possesses

  1587. everything.

  1588. He has

  1589. blessed

  1590. Abram.

  1591. And then

  1592. verse 20,

  1593. and blessed,

  1594. and probably

  1595. be more

  1596. accurate to

  1597. say, and

  1598. praise be

  1599. to God

  1600. most high.

  1601. Why?

  1602. He is the

  1603. one who has

  1604. delivered your

  1605. enemies into

  1606. your hand.

  1607. God.

  1608. Why is it

  1609. that you

  1610. could take

  1611. 318 guys

  1612. and a

  1613. couple of

  1614. guys from

  1615. your buddies

  1616. and you

  1617. could defeat

  1618. the

  1619. Mesopotamian

  1620. war machine?

  1621. It wasn't

  1622. because you're

  1623. a brilliant

  1624. general.

  1625. It wasn't

  1626. because you're

  1627. a brilliant

  1628. strategist.

  1629. It wasn't

  1630. because you

  1631. had better

  1632. technology.

  1633. In fact,

  1634. actually,

  1635. archaeologically

  1636. speaking,

  1637. the Canada

  1638. areas were

  1639. technologically

  1640. behind

  1641. Mesopotamia.

  1642. That's what

  1643. archaeologists

  1644. would now

  1645. tell you.

  1646. It has

  1647. nothing to

  1648. do with

  1649. that.

  1650. Your

  1651. victory

  1652. was a

  1653. work of

  1654. God.

  1655. Your

  1656. victory

  1657. was a

  1658. work of

  1659. God.

  1660. You're

  1661. blessed

  1662. because God

  1663. used you.

  1664. You're

  1665. blessed

  1666. because you

  1667. understood

  1668. the blessing

  1669. and the

  1670. promise

  1671. doesn't

  1672. make you

  1673. prideful

  1674. and indifferent

  1675. to your

  1676. neighbors

  1677. or your

  1678. kinsmen.

  1679. And even

  1680. though your

  1681. neighbors and

  1682. your kinsmen

  1683. do not

  1684. acknowledge

  1685. God

  1686. most

  1687. high

  1688. or the

  1689. Lord,

  1690. you

  1691. understood

  1692. that the

  1693. blessing

  1694. of God

  1695. most

  1696. high

  1697. upon

  1698. you

  1699. has

  1700. motivated

  1701. you

  1702. to

  1703. take a

  1704. risk,

  1705. to pursue

  1706. them,

  1707. to defeat

  1708. the enemy,

  1709. to set

  1710. them free

  1711. and to

  1712. liberate

  1713. them.

  1714. And so

  1715. praise be

  1716. God

  1717. most

  1718. high,

  1719. verse 20,

  1720. who has

  1721. delivered

  1722. your enemies

  1723. into your

  1724. hand.

  1725. And Abram

  1726. gave him

  1727. a tenth

  1728. of everything.

  1729. it's an

  1730. act of

  1731. homage.

  1732. Homage is

  1733. a word

  1734. that not

  1735. many people

  1736. know anymore.

  1737. Homage

  1738. is an

  1739. act of

  1740. not only

  1741. worship,

  1742. but

  1743. acknowledgement

  1744. that there

  1745. is one

  1746. who is

  1747. superior to

  1748. you,

  1749. that you

  1750. are in a

  1751. relationship

  1752. with,

  1753. who cares

  1754. for you,

  1755. to whom

  1756. in a

  1757. sense you

  1758. owe

  1759. proper

  1760. obedience

  1761. and love

  1762. and affection

  1763. to.

  1764. And I

  1765. just sort

  1766. of want

  1767. to pause.

  1768. That's,

  1769. you see,

  1770. why.

  1771. So once

  1772. again,

  1773. if you're

  1774. here and

  1775. you haven't

  1776. given Christ,

  1777. you haven't

  1778. made Christ

  1779. your Savior

  1780. and your

  1781. Lord,

  1782. this is a

  1783. good reminder

  1784. to say,

  1785. we don't

  1786. want you

  1787. to give

  1788. us any

  1789. money.

  1790. We'd

  1791. rather give

  1792. you money.

  1793. We'd

  1794. rather bless

  1795. you.

  1796. But for

  1797. those of

  1798. us who

  1799. are

  1800. Christians,

  1801. this is

  1802. where this

  1803. idea of

  1804. the tithe

  1805. begins to

  1806. come into.

  1807. That for

  1808. a Christian

  1809. to give

  1810. back 10%

  1811. of your

  1812. money to

  1813. the Lord

  1814. God is

  1815. an act

  1816. of homage.

  1817. It's an

  1818. act of

  1819. acknowledging

  1820. that everything

  1821. you have

  1822. ultimately is

  1823. because of

  1824. your Lord

  1825. and Master,

  1826. that your

  1827. Lord and

  1828. Master loves

  1829. you and

  1830. cares for

  1831. you,

  1832. that he's

  1833. worthy of

  1834. trust and

  1835. obedience to,

  1836. that he

  1837. will see that

  1838. your needs

  1839. are met,

  1840. and the

  1841. giving of

  1842. money back

  1843. to him

  1844. and for

  1845. the cause

  1846. of his

  1847. kingdom

  1848. is an

  1849. act of

  1850. homage.

  1851. It's an

  1852. act of

  1853. worship.

  1854. It's why

  1855. it really

  1856. isn't a

  1857. wrong thing

  1858. to pass

  1859. a plate

  1860. in the

  1861. church.

  1862. It's

  1863. why it's

  1864. not wrong

  1865. for those

  1866. of us

  1867. who call

  1868. Jesus

  1869. Savior and

  1870. Lord to

  1871. move towards

  1872. a time

  1873. when we

  1874. can return

  1875. 10%

  1876. of all

  1877. that we

  1878. have,

  1879. and all

  1880. that we

  1881. have is

  1882. due to

  1883. his grace

  1884. and mercy

  1885. and provision,

  1886. all things

  1887. come of

  1888. him and

  1889. of his

  1890. own have

  1891. we given

  1892. him,

  1893. to move

  1894. to the

  1895. point that

  1896. we would

  1897. turn 10%

  1898. to him,

  1899. or more.

  1900. But that's

  1901. one way of

  1902. living.

  1903. So what

  1904. this king,

  1905. who gives

  1906. this feast

  1907. and blesses,

  1908. this priest

  1909. king,

  1910. revealing to

  1911. Abram that

  1912. Abram did

  1913. the right

  1914. thing in

  1915. understanding

  1916. how the

  1917. blessing is

  1918. to cause

  1919. him to

  1920. have a

  1921. concern

  1922. for his

  1923. neighbors

  1924. who don't

  1925. share the

  1926. same worship

  1927. of the

  1928. same God,

  1929. in a sense

  1930. aren't even

  1931. covered directly

  1932. by that

  1933. blessing,

  1934. that that

  1935. blessing is

  1936. one that

  1937. should lead

  1938. him to

  1939. care for

  1940. his

  1941. neighbors.

  1942. And what

  1943. we see

  1944. here,

  1945. by the

  1946. way,

  1947. you see,

  1948. this is

  1949. what prepares

  1950. us for

  1951. the gospel.

  1952. When

  1953. Christians

  1954. read this,

  1955. what we're

  1956. also hearing

  1957. is this,

  1958. as we

  1959. read this,

  1960. if you go

  1961. back to

  1962. Galatians,

  1963. and Galatians

  1964. will say that

  1965. it's in

  1966. this story

  1967. that Abram

  1968. preaches

  1969. the gospel

  1970. to us.

  1971. And how

  1972. he preaches

  1973. the gospel

  1974. to us

  1975. is this,

  1976. is that

  1977. the great

  1978. Abram's

  1979. greater

  1980. offspring

  1981. is the

  1982. Lord Jesus

  1983. Christ.

  1984. And he

  1985. pursued you

  1986. and me,

  1987. even to the

  1988. point of

  1989. death upon

  1990. the cross,

  1991. and experiencing

  1992. all there is

  1993. to taste of

  1994. death.

  1995. He pursued

  1996. us all the

  1997. way to

  1998. death,

  1999. to liberate

  2000. us,

  2001. to set us

  2002. free from

  2003. our pride,

  2004. our presumption,

  2005. our greed,

  2006. our hatred,

  2007. our racism,

  2008. our envy,

  2009. our sins,

  2010. our serving

  2011. of idols,

  2012. our fear

  2013. of demons,

  2014. that he

  2015. pursues us

  2016. and deals

  2017. with all

  2018. that has to

  2019. be dealt

  2020. with so

  2021. that he

  2022. would rescue

  2023. us and

  2024. give us

  2025. the victory,

  2026. not because

  2027. of something

  2028. that we

  2029. have earned

  2030. or accomplished

  2031. or deserved,

  2032. but purely

  2033. and utterly

  2034. out of his

  2035. great love

  2036. for us.

  2037. He goes

  2038. to the depths

  2039. of where

  2040. we are

  2041. to find

  2042. us and

  2043. to rescue

  2044. us.

  2045. And when

  2046. we put

  2047. our faith

  2048. and trust

  2049. in him,

  2050. he transfers

  2051. us from

  2052. the kingdom

  2053. of lies

  2054. to the

  2055. kingdom

  2056. of truth,

  2057. from the

  2058. kingdom

  2059. of death

  2060. to the

  2061. kingdom

  2062. of life,

  2063. from the

  2064. kingdom

  2065. of darkness

  2066. to the

  2067. kingdom

  2068. of light,

  2069. from the

  2070. kingdom

  2071. of hatred

  2072. to the

  2073. kingdom

  2074. of love,

  2075. from the

  2076. kingdom

  2077. of vengeance

  2078. to the

  2079. kingdom

  2080. of mercy,

  2081. from the kingdom

  2082. hatred of beauty

2083. to the kingdom of beauty

2084. he transfers us when we put our faith

  2085. and trust in him

2086. what is the problem with not living in the real world

2087. I'm not going to try to prove in this sermon

2088. that the triune God exists

2089. that's a topic of other types of things

2090. but for those of you who are watching

2091. and don't know where you are

2092. with the whole Christian faith

2093. this is at least the Christian story

2094. if there is in fact a God that does exist

2095. to live in the world

2096. as if that God exists

2097. is in fact to be living in the real world

2098. and to live in the world

2099. where the God who's revealed in these scriptures

2100. which is a God of rescue

  2101. a God of blessing

  2102. a God of grace

  2103. a God of mercy

  2104. a God of beauty

  2105. a God of life

  2106. a God of light

  2107. a God of truth

2108. whose blessing to us is undeserved

  2109. and unwarranted

  2110. freely given

2111. and received with open hands

2112. which begins to form us in such a way

2113. that as this story grips us

2114. we begin to become freed

2115. from those things which bind us

2116. and be able to see ourselves as we really are

2117. this is a story to invite us to live

  2118. in the real world

  2119. to fight our pride

2120. well what about the other way of living

  2121. look at verse 21

2122. and the king of Sodom

  2123. said to Abram

  2124. and it's in a sense

  2125. a type of command

  2126. give me the persons

2127. but take the goods for yourself

  2128. now here's the problem

2129. and this is just as contemporary

  2130. as our own lives

2131. the lives of those we know

  2132. one moment

  2133. Sodom

  2134. got his butt kicked

  2135. Sodom

  2136. the king of Sodom

  2137. provoked

  2138. a terrible destructive war

  2139. out of his pride

  2140. he provoked

  2141. the war

  2142. second thing

  2143. he lost

  2144. third thing

2145. rather than standing and fighting with his troops

2146. if you go back and you read the earlier part

2147. he fled to the hills

  2148. on top of that

  2149. he left his city

  2150. undefended

2151. so the other army from Mesopotamia

  2152. can march right in

  2153. and pillage and plunder

  2154. his city

2155. he was hiding in the hills in terror

  2156. not exercising his power

2157. that he should as a king

2158. to protect his own city

  2159. and now

2160. that somebody else has defeated his enemy

2161. he already in his mind

2162. is trying to tell some other story

  2163. no no no

  2164. I didn't provoke it

2165. it was all their fault

  2166. no no

  2167. I didn't actually lose the battle

2168. I was actually just being very very smart

  2169. no no

  2170. I don't

  2171. I'm not the

2172. I'm not the lord of somebody

2173. that all my rich people

  2174. and powerful people

  2175. have been kidnapped

2176. no no no no no

2177. none of those things have gone on

  2178. I'm still the king

  2179. I'm in charge

2180. and not only is he thinking that in his mind

  2181. Abram

2182. as we're going to see in a moment

  2183. realizes

  2184. that this king

  2185. with his demands

  2186. and his pride

2187. is not living in the real world

2188. pride leads you to not live

  2189. in the real world

  2190. and he's already formulating a story

  2191. in his own mind

2192. how the fact that Abram

2193. who deserves all of the possessions

  2194. that actually

  2195. it's just because

  2196. King King Sodom

2197. I'm making the kids cry

  2198. I'm sorry

  2199. that you know

2200. it's really just because of his grace

2201. and mercy that he's allowing

  2202. it's all a fantasy world

  2203. all of it's a fantasy world

2204. he's a legend in his own mind

2205. and a failure in real life

2206. and he's not dealing with the real world

2207. none of us have bosses

2208. or underlings like this at all

2209. none of us have neighbors or kids

2210. and none of us have ever been like this ourselves

  2211. I stand condemned

  2212. I say that

  2213. I'm not

  2214. I'm not saying that

2215. this is a human problem

2216. so he makes this peremptory thing

  2217. give me the persons

2218. and take the goods for yourself

2219. well he doesn't get to

2220. he can only come as a supplicant

  2221. he should be coming

  2222. thank you so much

2223. and by the way Abram

  2224. I hope you don't mention

  2225. too many people

2226. that I ran away and hid

2227. but Abram said to the king of Sodom

  2228. you see grace

  2229. and blessing

  2230. the grace and blessing

2231. that comes from the true and living God

2232. forms you to live in the real world

2233. and in the real world

2234. you don't take the proud pronouncements

  2235. of those in power

2236. as reflecting what's really going on

2237. we need to learn that

2238. when we look at the government

  2239. and the media

  2240. and the judiciary

  2241. they can say it

  2242. doesn't mean it's true

  2243. they can say it

  2244. doesn't mean it's real

2245. they can say it over and over and over again

  2246. doesn't make it true

2247. see we need to be so gripped with the gospel

2248. and what Christ has done for us in the cross

2249. so we understand that God is calling us to live

2250. as people of the truth

2251. and not as people of the lie

  2252. people of the beauty

2253. and not of the people who hate beauty

  2254. people of the good

  2255. not people of

  2256. the evil

  2257. people of love

2258. not the people of hatred

2259. people of light and clarity

  2260. not darkness

  2261. and confusion

2262. but Abram said to the king of Sodom

2263. I have lifted my hand to the Lord

  2264. I have made a vow

  2265. a pledge

  2266. to God most high

2267. Lord the God most high

2268. possessor of heaven and earth

2269. creator of heaven and earth

2270. that I would not take a thread

  2271. or a sandal strap

2272. or anything that is yours

  2273. lest you should say

2274. I have made Abram rich

2275. his fantasy world of pride

  2276. I will take nothing

2277. but what the young men have eaten

2278. and the share of the men

2279. who have went with me

2280. let Aner and Escol and Mamre

  2281. take their share

2282. and so Abram is going to release

2283. the plunder in the people

  2284. and take not himself

  2285. you see

  2286. the blessing

  2287. and the grace

2288. that comes from the gospel

  2289. make forms us

2290. and prepares us to live in the real world

  2291. and be generous

  2292. and to care

  2293. for our family

  2294. and our neighbors

  2295. in our world

  2296. it should form us

2297. not to try to seek

2298. the good of the city

  2299. of Ottawa

2300. or the nation of Canada

  2301. as Ottawa and Canada

  2302. defines the good

2303. but as the true and living God

  2304. defines the good

  2305. from that perspective

2306. we should work on Parliament Hill

2307. we should work in Apple

  2308. and in Facebook

2309. we should work in small businesses

  2310. and we should work

  2311. in municipal politics

  2312. and we should work

  2313. in education

  2314. and we should work

  2315. in academia

  2316. and we should work

  2317. in the media

  2318. and we should work

  2319. in our neighborhood

  2320. to be good neighbors

2321. who seek the true good

  2322. of our neighborhood

  2323. our city

  2324. and our nation

  2325. and the world

2326. not from the city's perspective

  2327. but from God's perspective

  2328. the true good

  2329. the gospel forms us

  2330. to seek

  2331. the true good

  2332. open-handed

  2333. open-hearted

  2334. and generous

2335. I invite you to stand

  2336. let's bow our heads

  2337. in prayer

  2338. Father if there are

  2339. any here

  2340. who have not yet

  2341. or watching

  2342. or will watch

  2343. in the months

  2344. or the days

  2345. or weeks

  2346. or months

  2347. or years to come

  2348. that are watching

  2349. Father

2350. if they have not yet

  2351. given their life

  2352. to Christ

  2353. Father

2354. and if they are feeling

  2355. a tug

  2356. in their heart

  2357. or their spirit

  2358. that they should open

  2359. themselves to Christ

  2360. and ask him

  2361. to be their Savior

  2362. and Lord

  2363. Father I ask

  2364. that the Holy Spirit

2365. would move in their lives

  2366. and to help them

  2367. take that interior step

  2368. of committing themselves

  2369. of asking Jesus

  2370. to be their Savior

  2371. and Lord

  2372. to be their blessing

2373. and to have his grace

  2374. come into their lives

  2375. and Father

2376. I ask that the Holy Spirit

  2377. would help them

  2378. to just stop running

  2379. and stop keeping Christ

  2380. far away

2381. but to open the door

  2382. and turn to him

2383. and we thank you Father

  2384. that Jesus will come

  2385. into any

  2386. who calls to him

  2387. to be their Savior

  2388. and Lord

  2389. and Father

  2390. for those of us

  2391. here or online

2392. who have given our lives

  2393. to Christ

  2394. Father

  2395. we give you thanks

  2396. and praise

  2397. that Christ died

  2398. for us

  2399. that the grace

  2400. and blessing

  2401. that he offers us

  2402. of being connected

  2403. to you

  2404. in a way

  2405. that will see us

  2406. spend in eternity

  2407. in the new heaven

  2408. and the new earth

  2409. that that grace

  2410. is something

  2411. bestowed upon us

  2412. which is unmerited

  2413. unaccomplished

  2414. undeserved

  2415. on our part

  2416. that is purely

  2417. and utterly

  2418. an accomplishment

  2419. of you

2420. and a work of power

  2421. and love

  2422. from you

  2423. and we ask Father

2424. that you would grip us

  2425. with these stories

  2426. and with the life

  2427. of Christ

  2428. the person of Christ

  2429. the accomplishment

  2430. of Christ

  2431. that as he

  2432. grips us

2433. and what he has done

  2434. for us

  2435. grips us

  2436. that we can begin

  2437. to see the world

  2438. as it really is

  2439. and see our lives

  2440. as it really is

  2441. and respond

  2442. with gratitude

  2443. with thanks

  2444. with praise

  2445. with repentance

  2446. with amendment

  2447. of life

  2448. with sobriety

  2449. with soberness

  2450. as your grace

  2451. and your goodness

  2452. works in our lives

  2453. that you form us

  2454. Father

  2455. for a life

  2456. of freedom

  2457. in pursuit

  2458. of the truth

  2459. and of love

  2460. and of beauty

  2461. of goodness

  2462. and mercy

  2463. and we ask

  2464. all these things

2465. in the name of Jesus

  2466. your Son

  2467. and our Savior

  2468. Amen

  2469. Amen
