  1. Father, sometimes your word brings up issues that cause emotional turmoil for us.

  2. And Father, we don't like having emotional turmoil,

  3. but we know ultimately that when you raise issues that cause emotional turmoil,

  4. it is for our good.

  5. We give you thanks and praise that you know the sorrows of our hearts,

  6. the sadnesses, the unfulfilled dreams that we have,

  7. and we give you thanks and praise that we can pour out our hearts to you about those things,

  8. that you are our Father in heaven and that we live in your world and that you love us.

  9. We ask, Father, that you would gently but deeply pour the Holy Spirit upon us this morning

  10. as we read this and think about this powerful story in your word.

  11. And we give you full permission for your word to speak deeply into our hearts

  12. and form us.

  13. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  14. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. So today's sermon comes with a trigger warning.

  17. And I'm not saying that as a joke.

  18. It's very serious.

  19. There's a particular issue which drives the story.

  20. And it's an issue which was very painful then.

  21. And it's painful for many people today.

  22. And it's painful, in fact, for some of the people in our church.

  23. And the issue which is triggered, which is very difficult,

  24. is the problem of people who would like to have children but can't.

  25. And for some people, they would love to be able to have children,

  26. but they can't find anybody to marry.

  27. Or they've never been able to marry.

  28. Or at least not anybody that would be suitable.

  29. So they can go through their 20s and their 30s.

  30. And then maybe, of course, if you're a woman, enter into your 40s.

  31. And now it's no longer possible to have children.

  32. And you've never been able to find somebody to marry.

  33. And it can be very, very painful.

  34. And it's one of those pains that people have that they don't really wear on their sleeve.

  35. But it still can be a very, very deep ache and sorrow.

  36. And then, of course, there are women and men who've married.

  37. But for a variety of reasons, for whatever reasons, they're not able to have children.

  38. Or maybe they were able to have one miracle child, but they would long to have many children.

  39. And that's a very deep pain.

  40. It can be a very deep ache that can last for a very, very long time.

  41. And once again, it's not something often that they wear on their sleeve or even feel free to talk about.

  42. But it's a very, very real ache.

  43. And what drives the events of this story, amongst other things,

  44. is the struggle over childlessness.

  45. And the reaction of somebody who gets pregnant in the context of somebody who's childless.

  46. Now, this story, though, in other words, for some here in the room,

  47. it can evoke and maybe even trigger very, very powerful emotions.

  48. And the story itself doesn't directly deal with the issue of childlessness.

  49. But one of the things you need to understand about this story that we're about to read,

  50. and I know, by the way, if you went to the University of Ottawa,

  51. they would just say this is nonsense.

  52. But that's fine.

  53. People in universities aren't always right.

  54. I know that's a bit of a shock.

  55. But historically, Christians have understood that this story that we're about to read in Genesis

  56. is actually part of a five volume.

  57. It's actually five books that are meant to be one book.

  58. It would be like if you're reading The Lord of the Rings,

  59. and The Lord of the Rings as a whole is six books.

  60. And you're supposed to read the six books understanding that there's one author.

  61. And historically, Christians have believed that there's one ultimate,

  62. one primary author of this, which is Moses.

  63. And he wrote five different books.

  64. And then, of course, as Christians, we would now say that, in fact,

  65. this is one book out of a 66-book story,

  66. the 39 books that were written before Jesus

  67. and the 27 books that were written after Jesus.

  68. And one of the things that if you read the whole story,

  69. so there's two things about this.

  70. And so one of them isn't directly in this story.

  71. It would be if you kept to read the rest of the story.

  72. And even a little bit, if you were to think back to how the whole story begins in Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  73. is that one of the things which is very, very powerful

  74. is that at no point in time in the Bible

  75. does the Bible ever connect a woman's dignity or worth

  76. to the bearing of children or of even being married.

  77. At no point in time in the Bible

  78. does it connect a woman's dignity or worth or value

  79. or being used by God or ability to bring glory to God

  80. is connected to having a child, being married or having a child.

  81. And it's actually a very, very,

  82. we're going to talk about it a little bit more later on,

  83. that part of what the Bible is,

  84. is it's, I would call it,

  85. the Bible is, the Bible understood in the context of the gospel

  86. is the perennial sexual revolution

  87. to clarify how we human beings get sexual relations

  88. and sexual knowing all messed up.

  89. And the Bible is this unending source

  90. as seen through the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit

  91. to bring sanity to us.

  92. So there's things in our human nature that might mean,

  93. and it's not wrong for a person, for a woman

  94. to desire to have children.

  95. That's not a wrong desire.

  96. And the Bible doesn't say it's a wrong desire.

  97. The Bible very, very clearly portrays

  98. that women who are blessed

  99. and men who are blessed to enter into holy matrimony,

  100. they are doing a good thing.

  101. If they're blessed with children,

  102. that is a good thing.

  103. If they're not able to be married

  104. or not able to have children,

  105. those are also things,

  106. which while all of these things can be sources of sorrow,

  107. they're all things

  108. that don't affect our dignity and worth,

  109. our value,

  110. our ability to be used by God.

  111. And this is profoundly countercultural.

  112. And the other thing that we're going to see in this story

  113. is that there's the dynamic of childlessness

  114. and pregnancy,

  115. which causes conflict,

  116. massive conflict.

  117. But one of the things

  118. that's very, very powerful about this story,

  119. and by the way,

  120. if you're watching this and you're not a Christian,

  121. and you might not understand this,

  122. that Christians have trouble with this too,

  123. our culture has sort of formed us.

  124. The stories of our culture

  125. have formed us

  126. to do one of two types of things.

  127. One is to actually try to divide characters

  128. in a story into the good guys and the bad guys.

  129. Or the other thing,

  130. the thing which the elites like,

  131. but people tend to not want to go watch those movies

  132. or read those books.

  133. So they win awards

  134. and they sell a thousand copies.

  135. It's to sort of despair of the idea

  136. that there's any good or evil,

  137. right or wrong at all.

  138. But for the bulk of the stories,

  139. which human beings like,

  140. we want to try to put characters

  141. in the good category and the bad category.

  142. And one of the things

  143. which is going to be confusing for us

  144. when we read this story

  145. is that everybody's bad

  146. in the sense that everybody does some wrong things.

  147. Like everybody.

  148. There's no hero in the story.

  149. But what you see in the story

  150. is a profound sympathy

  151. for people who do bad things.

  152. And it's hard for us

  153. to get our minds around a story.

  154. In a sense,

  155. what you're doing is

  156. the story is giving us

  157. a little bit of a glimpse

  158. about how God,

  159. the triune God,

  160. sees human beings.

  161. He sees us as human beings.

  162. He sees the evil that we do.

  163. He sees the good that we fail to do.

  164. He doesn't minimize it and say,

  165. well, you're one of the good guys,

  166. so therefore the bad things that you do

  167. aren't as bad as the bad things

  168. the bad people do.

  169. And for you bad people,

  170. the bad things you do are way worse

  171. because that doesn't happen ever in the Bible.

  172. What you see is

  173. without minimizing moral evil

  174. and without minimizing the consequences

  175. of moral evil,

  176. you see this constant sympathy.

  177. This constant sympathy

  178. towards how people are presented.

  179. So here's how the story goes.

  180. If you turn in your Bibles,

  181. it's a long introduction,

  182. but it's an important introduction.

  183. And here's how the story goes.

  184. It's Genesis chapter 16,

    Genesis 16:1

  185. verses 1 to the end of the story.

  186. And for those of you

  187. who have maybe not come to the church

  188. for a long time,

  189. we preach through either books of the Bible

  190. or large chunks of the Bible,

  191. and we're in the process

  192. of going through the story of Abraham.

  193. So we've done chapter 12, 13, 14, 15,

  194. and now chapter 16,

  195. and here's how the story goes.

  196. Now Sarai, Abram's wife,

  197. had borne him no children.

  198. She had a female Egyptian servant

  199. whose name was Hagar.

  200. Now just sort of pause here.

  201. One of the problems for us

  202. reading a story like this

  203. is we're all familiar with the problem.

  204. How big or small a problem it is,

  205. of course, is itself a problem,

  206. the problem of racism

  207. and the problem of prejudice.

  208. And so for many people in our culture,

  209. hearing a story like this

  210. that instantly goes to identifying

  211. the woman as an Egyptian

  212. sounds as if it's, in a sense,

  213. racializing the story.

  214. It's bringing in prejudice.

  215. So is that what's going on in the story?

  216. Well, it's not what's going on

  217. in the story at all.

  218. What's going on here

  219. is something which is very, very important

  220. in terms of how the story

  221. forms you in a deep way.

  222. Excuse me.

  223. You see,

  224. here's the thing.

  225. We have a person here

  226. who's in the church today

  227. who has a PhD in the Old Testament.

  228. And if you talk to him,

  229. he can tell you one of the things

  230. which is remarkable

  231. about not only the book of Genesis

  232. but about all of the Pentateuch

  233. is all of these intricate interconnections

  234. in the story.

  235. And that's what's going on here.

  236. You see,

  237. Egypt is bringing up something.

  238. In Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  239. at the beginning of these stories

  240. about Abraham,

  241. what happens is

  242. you get this profound thing

  243. that sort of launches

  244. the rest of the Bible

  245. about how God has called Abram

  246. to leave Ur of the Chaldees

  247. and he's called him

  248. to go to this land

  249. that he doesn't know where it is

  250. and that God's going to bless him

  251. and he's going to make him

  252. a blessing which blesses

  253. and he's going to bless him

  254. with the land

  255. and it's a very, very powerful

  256. moving set of verses.

  257. And then almost immediately after that

  258. there's a famine

  259. that comes to the land

  260. and Abram,

  261. rather than trusting God

  262. or rather than seeking God's will,

  263. he tries to take matters

  264. into his own hand

  265. and he goes down to Egypt.

  266. And if you remember the story,

  267. what he does

  268. is not only does he decide

  269. to go down to Egypt

  270. but he decides

  271. that he's going to manage

  272. the Egyptian issue

  273. by lying

  274. and by doing something,

  275. him and Sarah together

  276. decide they're going to do

  277. something terrible.

  278. They're going to pretend

  279. that they're brother and sister

  280. and anyway,

  281. the whole thing becomes

  282. this complete and utter disaster.

  283. And in fact, actually,

  284. so when we see here now

  285. Hagar, who's an Egyptian,

  286. she probably became

  287. their servant

  288. in that incident.

  289. And there's other things

  290. which go on in this story

  291. because just before this,

  292. they talk about

  293. the 400 years

  294. and they're going to be

  295. in their impression

  296. and this is going to set

  297. the stage for eventually

  298. we discover it's going

  299. to be Egypt.

  300. And so there's all

  301. these little threads

  302. that go all the way

  303. through the story

  304. that connect things

  305. in the story

  306. and echoes of each other.

  307. But the particular thing

  308. which is going on here,

  309. if you've been reading

  310. the stories from chapter 12,

  311. 13, 14, 15, and 16

  312. and you come to this

  313. and you see this

  314. and it reminds you

  315. of the disaster

  316. that happened in chapter 12,

  317. it's saying

  318. something bad

  319. is about to happen.

  320. In modern movies,

  321. it would be done

  322. with a certain type of music

  323. where all of a sudden

  324. the music stops

  325. in their silence

  326. and it signals

  327. to the viewer

  328. that something

  329. bad is about to happen

  330. and that's what's going on

  331. here in the text.

  332. So, verse 2.

  333. So what's the bad thing

  334. that's about to happen?

  335. Verse 2.

  336. And Sarai said to Abram,

  337. Behold, now,

  338. sorry, behold,

  339. behold, now,

  340. the Lord has prevented me

  341. from bearing children.

  342. We'll talk about that

  343. in a moment.

  344. Go into my servant

  345. and go into my servant

  346. is sexual language.

  347. Basically, she's saying

  348. I want you to have sex

  349. with my servant.

  350. Go into my servant,

  351. it may be that I shall

  352. obtain children by her.

  353. And Abram listened

  354. to the voice of Sarai.

  355. So after Abram

  356. had lived ten years

  357. in the land of Canaan,

  358. Sarai, Abram's wife,

  359. took Hagar the Egyptian,

  360. her servant,

  361. and gave her to Abram,

  362. her husband,

  363. as a wife.

  364. And he went into Hagar

  365. and she conceived.

  366. And when she saw

  367. that she had conceived,

  368. she looked with contempt

  369. on her mistress.

  370. So,

  371. so first of all,

  372. this sounds a bit weird

  373. to us, eh?

  374. I could just imagine

  375. me suggesting

  376. to Louise

  377. that she find

  378. a younger woman

  379. for me to marry

  380. and I'll be married

  381. to both of them.

  382. And that would not be

  383. a conversation

  384. would go very well,

  385. nor should it.

  386. But here's the thing.

  387. What Sarah and Hagar do

  388. is the cultural wisdom

  389. of the day.

  390. In other words,

  391. it is what the cultural

  392. equivalents of the CBC,

  393. the Liberal Party,

  394. the Conservative Party,

  395. Ottawa U,

  396. Hollywood,

  397. the Globe and Mail,

  398. all of our elites

  399. have a cultural wisdom

  400. around sexual knowledge.

  401. and sexual relations.

  402. And in the,

  403. the equivalents

  404. of the CBC

  405. and the Supreme Court

  406. and Parliament

  407. and the Senate

  408. and Ottawa U

  409. and,

  410. and Hollywood,

  411. the equivalents

  412. in those days

  413. would have said

  414. that what Sarah

  415. and Hagar were doing

  416. was the smart,

  417. wise way

  418. to fix the problem.

  419. They're following

  420. the cultural wisdom

  421. of the day.

  422. And it leads

  423. to complete

  424. and utter disaster.

  425. The disaster

  426. is going to get worse

  427. as the story goes on.

  428. There's going to be

  429. demands for justice

  430. which is really

  431. just masking a desire

  432. to hurt,

  433. not for justice

  434. but to hurt,

  435. to crush,

  436. to oppress,

  437. to afflict.

  438. There's going to be

  439. abandonment

  440. and running away

  441. and there's only going

  442. to be further heartache

  443. as they follow

  444. the wisdom of the world.

  445. this in fact is

  446. why you see

  447. that the Bible's teaching

  448. is part of the continual

  449. true sexual revolution,

  450. the perennial sexual revolution.

  451. You see,

  452. if you watch Hollywood

  453. and read stories

  454. and listen to the experts,

  455. they continually

  456. tell us different ways

  457. to live sexually

  458. in the world

  459. which they say

  460. are wise.

  461. And the stories

  462. and the movies

  463. never show

  464. in fact

  465. the folly

  466. of following

  467. the wisdom

  468. of the world.

  469. So in the wisdom

  470. of our world,

  471. there is pressure

  472. on women

  473. to have

  474. sexual knowing

  475. with their boyfriends

  476. because they believe

  477. that unless they have,

  478. they sexually know

  479. their boyfriends,

  480. their boyfriends

  481. will not date them

  482. and they'll never marry

  483. and they want to marry.

  484. Or

  485. there is pressure

  486. put on young men

  487. and young women

  488. and older men

  489. and older women

  490. that they need to have

  491. sexual knowing

  492. of many people

  493. because how else

  494. will you be prepared

  495. for marriage

  496. unless you have

  497. sexual knowing

  498. of many people.

  499. And the cultural

  500. wisdom of the day

  501. says that if you want

  502. to have a long

  503. and happy marriage,

  504. you need to live

  505. together first

  506. because that's the way

  507. that you find out

  508. whether you're in fact

  509. suited to be

  510. with this other person.

  511. And this is all

  512. just the commonplace

  513. wisdom of the world.

  514. What they don't say

  515. is because God

  516. has designed

  517. sexual knowing

  518. as a powerful

  519. unitive force

  520. within the person

  521. that when a woman

  522. sleeps with a man

  523. and one or both

  524. have absolutely

  525. no intention

  526. of ever marrying them,

  527. all that happens

  528. is that there's

  529. a type of tearing

  530. in the person

  531. in a hardening

  532. of relations

  533. between the sexes

  534. and a distrust.

  535. And that's not

  536. even calling,

  537. that's not even

  538. connected to things

  539. like sexually

  540. transmitted diseases

  541. which can in fact

  542. in many cases

  543. lead to infertility

  544. or to unwanted

  545. pregnancies

  546. and abortions.

  547. And there's no

  548. type of sense

  549. that the supposed

  550. wisdom of living

  551. together

  552. to prepare you

  553. for marriage

  554. that all

  555. of the statistics

  556. for decades

  557. consistently show

  558. that people

  559. who lived together

  560. before marriage

  561. are much more

  562. likely to divorce

  563. than to remain

  564. married.

  565. Nor that the

  566. pressure to sexually

  567. know many different

  568. people to somehow

  569. prepare you for

  570. marriage,

  571. that to sexually

  572. know many people

  573. only forms you

  574. to have sex

  575. with lots of

  576. people.

  577. doesn't help

  578. you or form

  579. you at all

  580. to sexually

  581. know just one

  582. person,

  583. your husband

  584. or your wife.

  585. In fact,

  586. the sexual

  587. wisdom of our

  588. world causes

  589. chaos.

  590. And the

  591. wisdom of the

  592. Bible,

  593. because you see

  594. one of the

  595. things in what

  596. happens in this

  597. story,

  598. and it's a

  599. subtle thing,

  600. but it's very

  601. powerful and

  602. cumulative.

  603. The wisdom

  604. of the world

  605. in those days

  606. was polygamy

  607. was good

  608. amongst other

  609. things.

  610. And one of

  611. the things

  612. that the

  613. Bible consistently

  614. shows is

  615. that whenever

  616. polygamy or

  617. these other

  618. things happen,

  619. all that

  620. happens is

  621. heartache and

  622. chaos.

  623. And that the

  624. wisdom,

  625. portrayed especially

  626. in Exodus and

  627. Deuteronomy,

  628. where it talks

  629. about you

  630. shall not

  631. commit adultery,

  632. that that

  633. is something

  634. which opens

  635. the door to

  636. a perpetual

  637. sexual revolution.

  638. that points

  639. you towards

  640. sanity and

  641. wholeness and

  642. health.

  643. So they

  644. follow the

  645. wisdom of

  646. the world,

  647. and Hagar

  648. successfully gets

  649. pregnant,

  650. and Sarah

  651. is crushed,

  652. Hagar's

  653. arrogant and

  654. contemptuous,

  655. and we can

  656. all see that

  657. this is going

  658. to be a

  659. recipe for a

  660. great time

  661. together.

  662. In sitcoms,

  663. of course,

  664. what would

  665. happen is

  666. there'd be a

  667. period of

  668. conflict.

  669. They'd all

  670. come to their

  671. senses,

  672. they'd have a

  673. group hug,

  674. and they'd

  675. live together

  676. happily ever

  677. after,

  678. and that,

  679. of course,

  680. is completely

  681. and utterly

  682. unrealistic to

  683. most of

  684. human

  685. experience,

  686. but what

  687. is portrayed

  688. in sitcoms,

  689. and what we

  690. think should

  691. happen to

  692. us.

  693. Well,

  694. how does it

  695. work out?

  696. Look what

  697. happens in

  698. verse 5.

  699. Sarah said

  700. to Abram,

  701. May the

  702. wrong done

  703. to me

  704. be on you.

  705. I gave

  706. my servant

  707. to your

  708. embrace,

  709. and when

  710. she saw

  711. that she

  712. had conceived,

  713. she looked

  714. on me with

  715. contempt.

  716. The same

  717. word for

  718. contempt is

  719. also the

  720. word for

  721. curse.

  722. She

  723. curses,

  724. Sarah.

  725. May the

  726. Lord judge

  727. between you

  728. and me.

  729. But Abram

  730. said to

  731. Sarah,

  732. Behold,

  733. your servant

  734. is in

  735. your power.

  736. Do to

  737. her as

  738. you please.

  739. Then Sarah

  740. dealt

  741. harshly

  742. with her,

  743. and Hagar

  744. fled from

  745. Sarah.

  746. So here

  747. we see

  748. just a

  749. perfect

  750. picture

  751. of human

  752. life.

  753. Why is

  754. it that we

  755. can't

  756. accept

  757. responsibility

  758. for the

  759. wrong that

  760. we do?

  761. Sarah

  762. blames

  763. Abram.

  764. Abram

  765. shuffles

  766. off

  767. responsibility.

  768. Sarah

  769. claims that

  770. she wants

  771. justice,

  772. which is

  773. what she's

  774. trying to

  775. talk to

  776. Abram

  777. about

  778. what she

  779. doesn't

  780. really want

  781. justice.

  782. She wants

  783. to smash.

  784. That's what

  785. she wants.

  786. She doesn't

  787. want justice.

  788. She wants

  789. to smash.

  790. And so

  791. she smashes.

  792. And Hagar

  793. flees.

  794. And now

  795. the focus

  796. shifts

  797. to Hagar.

  798. Sarah,

  799. in a sense,

  800. disappears from

  801. the story,

  802. at least this

  803. incident,

  804. moment,

  805. and now

  806. the focus

  807. goes on

  808. Hagar.

  809. How is

  810. God going

  811. to deal

  812. with all

  813. of this?

  814. Well,

  815. let's

  816. look.

  817. Verse 7,

  818. the angel

  819. of the

  820. Lord

  821. found her,

  822. now the

  823. her is

  824. Hagar,

  825. not Sarai,

  826. but found

  827. Hagar,

  828. by a

  829. spring of

  830. water in

  831. the wilderness,

  832. the spring

  833. on the

  834. way to

  835. Shur.

  836. Now,

  837. just sort

  838. of pause

  839. here for

  840. a second.

  841. It's just

  842. a very

  843. tiny bit

  844. of the

  845. story,

  846. but remember,

  847. stories form

  848. us,

  849. and one

  850. of the

  851. things which

  852. is subtly

  853. forming us

  854. here at the

  855. very,

  856. very beginning

  857. of the

  858. Old Testament

  859. is that

  860. God goes

  861. seeking

  862. Hagar,

  863. the one

  864. who treats

  865. Sarai with

  866. contempt,

  867. the one

  868. who curses

  869. Sarai out.

  870. God

  871. goes

  872. looking

  873. for

  874. Hagar.

  875. Hagar.

  876. See,

  877. every single

  878. one of us

  879. who have

  880. become a

  881. Christian,

  882. God

  883. sought you

  884. before you

  885. sought him.

  886. That's the

  887. pattern of

  888. the Bible.

  889. The Lord

  890. seeks you,

  891. and he

  892. seeks you

  893. even when

  894. you've done

  895. things which

  896. aren't very

  897. good.

  898. The Lord

  899. seeks

  900. Hagar,

  901. and the

  902. Lord finds

  903. Hagar.

  904. Verse 8,

  905. and he

  906. said,

  907. Hagar,

  908. servant

  909. of

  910. Sarai,

  911. where have

  912. you come

  913. from and

  914. where are

  915. you going?

  916. She said,

  917. I am

  918. fleeing from

  919. my mistress

  920. Sarai.

  921. The angel

  922. of the Lord

  923. said to

  924. her,

  925. return to

  926. your mistress

  927. and submit

  928. to her.

  929. Now,

  930. that causes

  931. problems for

  932. us.

  933. I don't

  934. know if

  935. you're aware

  936. of the

  937. fact,

  938. but the

  939. most popular

  940. tattoo in

  941. Canada is

  942. the phrase,

  943. I love to

  944. submit.

  945. Haven't you

  946. found that

  947. is the

  948. case?

  949. Like,

  950. I don't

  951. know,

  952. you know,

  953. every time

  954. I go into

  955. a Starbucks,

  956. it's like

  957. every person,

  958. I think,

  959. what are you,

  960. a herd of

  961. independent

  962. minds?

  963. You all

  964. like to

  965. tattoo on

  966. your arms

  967. where everybody

  968. can see I

  969. love to

  970. submit?

  971. No,

  972. of course,

  973. this is like

  974. a completely

  975. terrible thing.

  976. This is so

  977. un-Canadian.

  978. In fact,

  979. for many people

  980. looking at this,

  981. they go,

  982. oh,

  983. come on,

  984. good grief.

  985. Like,

  986. how,

  987. what?

  988. Listen,

  989. the Bible

  990. shouldn't be

  991. telling her to

  992. submit.

  993. Like,

  994. so how would

  995. Hollywood tell

  996. it?

  997. Well,

  998. here's the

  999. thing.

  1000. Here's the

  1001. thing where

  1002. the Bible

  1003. is wise.

  1004. There is

  1005. no option

  1006. to Hagar

  1007. other than

  1008. submitting.

  1009. The question

  1010. isn't,

  1011. see,

  1012. that's what

  1013. Hollywood and

  1014. the wisdom of

  1015. the world

  1016. likes to try

  1017. to tell us.

  1018. the option

  1019. for George

  1020. is,

  1021. will I

  1022. submit?

  1023. Or will

  1024. I be

  1025. an independent,

  1026. powerful,

  1027. self-asserting,

  1028. autonomous,

  1029. self-actualizing

  1030. person that

  1031. everybody should

  1032. applaud?

  1033. Should I do

  1034. that or should

  1035. I submit?

  1036. Well,

  1037. who's going to

  1038. pick submitting

  1039. when that's

  1040. the option?

  1041. But that's

  1042. not the

  1043. option in

  1044. life.

  1045. Bob Dylan,

  1046. in his

  1047. Christian phase,

  1048. put it

  1049. perfectly.

  1050. You've

  1051. got to

  1052. serve

  1053. somebody.

  1054. It might

  1055. be the

  1056. devil,

  1057. or it

  1058. might be

  1059. the

  1060. Lord,

  1061. but you

  1062. got to

  1063. serve

  1064. somebody.

  1065. The

  1066. question

  1067. isn't,

  1068. will you

  1069. submit

  1070. or not?

  1071. The

  1072. question

  1073. is always

  1074. who or

  1075. what will

  1076. you submit

  1077. to?

  1078. So,

  1079. if you

  1080. get upset

  1081. with the

  1082. story,

  1083. well,

  1084. what's

  1085. Hagar

  1086. going to

  1087. do?

  1088. Hagar's

  1089. going to

  1090. go back.

  1091. Here she

  1092. is a

  1093. single,

  1094. unattached

  1095. woman in

  1096. a patriarchal

  1097. society.

  1098. She's

  1099. going to

  1100. go back

  1101. and be

  1102. somebody's

  1103. slave.

  1104. she's

  1105. not going

  1106. to go

  1107. to

  1108. Egypt

  1109. and start

  1110. the

  1111. equivalent

  1112. of

  1113. Shopify

  1114. or

  1115. Amazon

  1116. and be

  1117. unbelievably

  1118. rich.

  1119. She's

  1120. going to

  1121. submit

  1122. to

  1123. somebody.

  1124. But

  1125. what does

  1126. he tell

  1127. her?

  1128. And we're

  1129. going to

  1130. see,

  1131. in a sense,

  1132. the promise

  1133. which comes

  1134. immediately

  1135. after that.

  1136. Remember,

  1137. if you go

  1138. back and

  1139. you read

  1140. Genesis

    Genesis 12:1

  1141. chapter 12

  1142. verses 1,

  1143. 2,

  1144. and 3,

  1145. one of the

  1146. things which

  1147. characterizes the

  1148. blessing that

  1149. God is to

  1150. give Abram,

  1151. is that

  1152. Abram is

  1153. blessed to

  1154. be a

  1155. blessing.

  1156. So what

  1157. he is telling

  1158. Hagar to

  1159. do is to

  1160. go back to

  1161. the one who's

  1162. being blessed

  1163. to be a

  1164. blessing,

  1165. because if

  1166. she goes

  1167. back,

  1168. she will

  1169. be blessed.

  1170. She goes

  1171. to Egypt,

  1172. slavery,

  1173. she goes

  1174. to poverty,

  1175. she goes

  1176. back,

  1177. and she's

  1178. going to

  1179. have to

  1180. submit,

  1181. or she

  1182. can go

  1183. back and

  1184. submit.

  1185. God is

  1186. going to

  1187. deal with

  1188. things so

  1189. that she's

  1190. blessed.

  1191. Look, in

  1192. fact, what

  1193. happens.

  1194. Verse 10.

  1195. So verse 9,

  1196. return to

  1197. your mistress

  1198. and submit

  1199. to her.

  1200. The angel

  1201. of the

  1202. Lord,

  1203. verse 10,

  1204. also said

  1205. to her,

  1206. I will

  1207. surely

  1208. multiply

  1209. your

  1210. offspring

  1211. so that

  1212. they cannot

  1213. be numbered

  1214. for multitude.

  1215. And the

  1216. angel of

  1217. the Lord

  1218. said to

  1219. her,

  1220. behold,

  1221. you are

  1222. pregnant,

  1223. and you

  1224. shall bear

  1225. a son,

  1226. you shall

  1227. call his

  1228. name Ishmael,

  1229. because the

  1230. Lord has

  1231. listened to

  1232. your affliction.

  1233. He shall

  1234. be a wild

  1235. donkey of

  1236. a man.

  1237. That's an

  1238. image of

  1239. a person

  1240. who loves

  1241. freedom,

  1242. but at the

  1243. same time

  1244. he's going

  1245. to have a

  1246. problem.

  1247. His freedom,

  1248. his love

  1249. of freedom

  1250. will mean he

  1251. won't get

  1252. along with

  1253. people.

  1254. Verse 12,

  1255. he shall

  1256. be a wild

  1257. donkey of

  1258. a man,

  1259. his hand

  1260. against

  1261. everyone,

  1262. and everyone's

  1263. hand against

  1264. him,

  1265. and he

  1266. shall

  1267. dwell

  1268. over

  1269. against

  1270. all his

  1271. kinsmen.

  1272. But the

  1273. thing is,

  1274. right,

  1275. there's a

  1276. prophecy of

  1277. some other

  1278. things that

  1279. are going

  1280. to go on

  1281. there,

  1282. but fundamentally

  1283. if she

  1284. goes back

  1285. and submits

  1286. to the

  1287. one whom

  1288. the Lord

  1289. is blessing

  1290. to be a

  1291. blessing,

  1292. is that

  1293. she will

  1294. be blessed.

  1295. Her son

  1296. will be

  1297. safely born.

  1298. Her son

  1299. will marry.

  1300. her son

  1301. will have

  1302. children,

  1303. and she

  1304. will be a

  1305. mom who

  1306. has a

  1307. child,

  1308. and who

  1309. has

  1310. grandchildren,

  1311. and great

  1312. grandchildren,

  1313. of course,

  1314. in those days

  1315. she would die

  1316. before any

  1317. of that

  1318. would be

  1319. seen,

  1320. probably.

  1321. But that

  1322. is what

  1323. God is

  1324. promising her

  1325. and offering

  1326. her.

  1327. Verse 13,

  1328. this is very

  1329. significant.

  1330. So she

  1331. called the

  1332. name of

  1333. the Lord

  1334. who spoke

  1335. to her,

  1336. you are

  1337. a God

  1338. of seeing.

  1339. For she

  1340. said,

  1341. truly,

  1342. here I

  1343. have seen

  1344. him who

  1345. looks after

  1346. me.

  1347. Therefore

  1348. the well

  1349. was called

  1350. Bir Lahai

  1351. Roy.

  1352. It lies

  1353. between

  1354. Kadesh

  1355. and Bered

  1356. and Hagar

  1357. bore Abram

  1358. a son,

  1359. and Abram

  1360. called the

  1361. name of

  1362. his son

  1363. whom

  1364. Hagar

  1365. bore

  1366. Ishmael.

  1367. In other

  1368. words,

  1369. Abram

  1370. comes

  1371. back,

  1372. there's

  1373. peace

  1374. which

  1375. goes

  1376. back

  1377. there.

  1378. Abram

  1379. was 86

  1380. years

  1381. old

  1382. when

  1383. Hagar

  1384. bore

  1385. Ishmael

  1386. to

  1387. Abram.

  1388. But here's

  1389. the thing,

  1390. trying to

  1391. wrap this

  1392. up,

  1393. here's the

  1394. thing which

  1395. is very

  1396. significant

  1397. about this.

  1398. If you

  1399. go back

  1400. to verse

  1401. 13,

  1402. you are

  1403. a God

  1404. of seeing.

  1405. In the

  1406. original

  1407. language,

  1408. the same

  1409. name

  1410. sentence

  1411. can be

  1412. understood

  1413. in different

  1414. senses

  1415. all at

  1416. the same

  1417. time.

  1418. In English,

  1419. of course,

  1420. you have

  1421. to pick

  1422. one.

  1423. And it

  1424. also means

  1425. not just

  1426. you are

  1427. a God

  1428. of seeing,

  1429. but you

  1430. are a

  1431. God who

  1432. sees me.

  1433. And it

  1434. also could

  1435. be understood

  1436. as you

  1437. are the

  1438. God I

  1439. see.

  1440. And then

  1441. the thing

  1442. about the

  1443. well is

  1444. that there's

  1445. a living

  1446. God who

  1447. sees

  1448. me.

  1449. You know,

  1450. here's one

  1451. of the

  1452. things.

  1453. things.

  1454. I mean,

  1455. one of the

  1456. problems,

  1457. of course,

  1458. to go back

  1459. to the

  1460. thing which

  1461. I mentioned

  1462. at the

  1463. first,

  1464. is, of

  1465. course,

  1466. one of the

  1467. reasons that

  1468. people can

  1469. feel so

  1470. hard done

  1471. by and

  1472. hurt,

  1473. and hard

  1474. done by,

  1475. I didn't

  1476. mean to say

  1477. it that way,

  1478. can be very

  1479. hurt,

  1480. is that they

  1481. haven't been

  1482. able to find,

  1483. they'd love to

  1484. be married,

  1485. they'd love to

  1486. have children,

  1487. they aren't

  1488. able to find

  1489. it,

  1490. and it's a

  1491. very,

  1492. very hard

  1493. thing,

  1494. and at

  1495. some point

  1496. in time,

  1497. they start

  1498. to feel

  1499. invisible.

  1500. It's one

  1501. of the

  1502. things which

  1503. is also

  1504. hard,

  1505. not just

  1506. for women

  1507. like that,

  1508. but for

  1509. men,

  1510. is the

  1511. feeling of

  1512. being

  1513. invisible.

  1514. It's the

  1515. problem of

  1516. the poor,

  1517. they are

  1518. invisible.

  1519. One of the

  1520. things I had

  1521. several people

  1522. tell me who

  1523. live in the

  1524. downtown core,

  1525. is that when

  1526. we had the

  1527. lockdown,

  1528. especially the

  1529. first lockdown,

  1530. what did they

  1531. say to me?

  1532. They never

  1533. realized there

  1534. were so many

  1535. street people

  1536. in Ottawa.

  1537. Why did they

  1538. never realize

  1539. there were so

  1540. many street

  1541. people in

  1542. Ottawa?

  1543. Because they're

  1544. often invisible

  1545. amidst all

  1546. the others,

  1547. and when

  1548. there's nobody

  1549. there,

  1550. they're no

  1551. longer

  1552. invisible.

  1553. What is

  1554. part of the

  1555. problem with

  1556. aging?

  1557. Often with

  1558. age, you

  1559. start to

  1560. feel invisible,

  1561. unseen,

  1562. and so we

  1563. have this

  1564. very, very

  1565. powerful way

  1566. of describing

  1567. the true

  1568. and living

  1569. God.

  1570. Not the

  1571. God of

  1572. Canadians,

  1573. but the

  1574. God of

  1575. the Bible.

  1576. The God

  1577. of Canadians

  1578. is often

  1579. just an

  1580. impersonal

  1581. force or

  1582. some type

  1583. of wispy

  1584. type of

  1585. thing,

  1586. but the

  1587. God of

  1588. the Bible

  1589. is not

  1590. an invisible

  1591. force,

  1592. it's not

  1593. something

  1594. wispy.

  1595. The God

  1596. of the

  1597. Bible is

  1598. the true

  1599. and living

  1600. God,

  1601. and the

  1602. true and

  1603. living God

  1604. is the

  1605. one who

  1606. sees you.

  1607. You are

  1608. not

  1609. invisible to

  1610. the true

  1611. and living

  1612. God,

  1613. and he

  1614. looks upon

  1615. you with

  1616. sympathy.

  1617. He sees

  1618. very clear-eyed

  1619. the wrong

  1620. you've done

  1621. and the good

  1622. you've done,

  1623. but you're

  1624. never invisible

  1625. to the true

  1626. and living

  1627. God.

  1628. And this

  1629. becomes even

  1630. more, as

  1631. the Bible

  1632. continues,

  1633. and as you

  1634. learn more

  1635. about the

  1636. true and

  1637. living God

  1638. and the

  1639. different ways

  1640. that the

  1641. true and

  1642. living God

  1643. sees,

  1644. both with

  1645. justice and

  1646. mercy and

  1647. with compassion

  1648. and with

  1649. sympathy,

  1650. and it

  1651. culminates in

  1652. the New

  1653. Testament.

  1654. John's

  1655. Gospel, in

  1656. particular,

  1657. the clearest.

  1658. In John's

  1659. Gospel, it's

  1660. very, very

  1661. clear that

  1662. when you

  1663. see Jesus,

  1664. you are

  1665. seeing the

  1666. living God.

  1667. And the

  1668. way that you

  1669. see the

  1670. living God

  1671. most completely

  1672. and perfectly

  1673. in the

  1674. Gospel of

  1675. John is

  1676. when you

  1677. see Jesus

  1678. dying upon

  1679. the cross.

  1680. And one

  1681. of the

  1682. things which

  1683. is so

  1684. remarkable about

  1685. the seven

  1686. last words

  1687. that Jesus

  1688. has from

  1689. the cross

  1690. is the

  1691. way that

  1692. even as

  1693. he is

  1694. hanging on

  1695. the cross

  1696. dying,

  1697. he sees.

  1698. He sees

  1699. the thief

  1700. upon the

  1701. cross.

  1702. He sees

  1703. the disciple

  1704. whom he

  1705. loves.

  1706. He sees

  1707. his mother.

  1708. He sees.

  1709. He sees

  1710. you.

  1711. You see

  1712. God

  1713. perfectly

  1714. revealed

  1715. when you

  1716. see Jesus

  1717. dying upon

  1718. the cross.

  1719. He sees

  1720. God and

  1721. you are

  1722. seeing the

  1723. God who

  1724. sees you

  1725. and sees

  1726. me.

  1727. The promise

  1728. that God

  1729. would be a

  1730. blessing to

  1731. Abram and

  1732. Sarah and

  1733. that part of

  1734. that profound

  1735. mystery of

  1736. blessing isn't

  1737. as you can see

  1738. that they were

  1739. perfect.

  1740. they are

  1741. not

  1742. perfect.

  1743. But from

  1744. them believing

  1745. the promise

  1746. you see

  1747. from them

  1748. believing the

  1749. promise

  1750. eventually they

  1751. will give

  1752. birth to

  1753. the son

  1754. who will

  1755. give birth

  1756. to a son

  1757. who will

  1758. give birth

  1759. to a son

  1760. that down

  1761. the road

  1762. and down

  1763. the road

  1764. and down

  1765. the road

  1766. is great

  1767. Abram's

  1768. greater son

  1769. who dies

  1770. on the cross

  1771. so that

  1772. Abram and

  1773. Sarah can

  1774. be made

  1775. right with

  1776. the true

  1777. and living

  1778. God.

  1779. And for

  1780. Hagar

  1781. potentially.

  1782. but in

  1783. the cross

  1784. you see

  1785. the God

  1786. you see

  1787. God

  1788. and you

  1789. see the

  1790. God who

  1791. sees you.

  1792. You're not

  1793. invisible.

  1794. Just in

  1795. closing

  1796. part of the

  1797. great lesson

  1798. of this text

  1799. is not just

  1800. to bring us

  1801. to this point

  1802. this profound

  1803. insight.

  1804. Remember I

  1805. said that one

  1806. of the things

  1807. which is

  1808. complicated for

  1809. us when we

  1810. read this

  1811. story is we

  1812. want to put

  1813. people in

  1814. good guys

  1815. and bad

  1816. guys and

  1817. downgrade

  1818. their badness

  1819. and upgrade

  1820. their goodness

  1821. or do the

  1822. opposite depending

  1823. on what

  1824. sides we

  1825. are and we

  1826. don't see

  1827. that happening

  1828. in the text.

  1829. We see the

  1830. wrong.

  1831. We see the

  1832. hurt.

  1833. We see the

  1834. sorrow.

  1835. We see the

  1836. sadness and

  1837. we don't see

  1838. it and we

  1839. see it seen

  1840. with sympathy

  1841. and the

  1842. steps to

  1843. deliver people

  1844. from oppression

  1845. and to bring

  1846. people into

  1847. love.

  1848. To live out

  1849. of the promise

  1850. that comes from

  1851. the gospel

  1852. that when

  1853. Jesus dies

  1854. for you on

  1855. the cross

  1856. he sees

  1857. you and

  1858. he died

  1859. for you

  1860. and to

  1861. realize that

  1862. he has come

  1863. and sought

  1864. me the

  1865. promise God

  1866. comes and

  1867. gives me this

  1868. great gift of

  1869. grace when I

  1870. do not am

  1871. worthy of it

  1872. and I do not

  1873. deserve it.

  1874. You see

  1875. part of

  1876. Sarah's

  1877. problem was

  1878. she thought

  1879. God couldn't

  1880. accomplish

  1881. things and

  1882. so she

  1883. needed to

  1884. do it

  1885. for herself.

  1886. She

  1887. stopped living

  1888. out of the

  1889. promise

  1890. and thought

  1891. that God

  1892. needed her

  1893. power to

  1894. fix the

  1895. things that

  1896. his power

  1897. couldn't

  1898. manage.

  1899. and that's

  1900. always a

  1901. consistent

  1902. problem and

  1903. danger for

  1904. us who are

  1905. Christians

  1906. thinking that

  1907. somehow we

  1908. need to use

  1909. our power

  1910. because God's

  1911. power isn't

  1912. enough.

  1913. You see

  1914. what happens

  1915. is it will

  1916. happen now in

  1917. the rest of

  1918. the story in

  1919. chapter 17 and

  1920. 18 and

  1921. 19 and

  1922. 20 and

  1923. 21 and

  1924. 22 is

  1925. that when

  1926. Abram and

  1927. Sarah are

  1928. being faithful

  1929. they live out

  1930. of the

  1931. promise.

  1932. And as

  1933. the promise

  1934. of grace

  1935. and of

  1936. blessing

  1937. becomes real

  1938. to their

  1939. heart

  1940. God will

  1941. at the

  1942. same time

  1943. put into

  1944. their heart

  1945. the things

  1946. that they

  1947. need to

  1948. do out

  1949. of obedience

  1950. and gratitude

  1951. to the

  1952. promise.

  1953. Not because

  1954. his hand

  1955. is short

  1956. or weak

  1957. but because

  1958. the very

  1959. promise of

  1960. the blessing

  1961. and the

  1962. promise

  1963. forms you

  1964. to do

  1965. things

  1966. in a way

  1967. that don't

  1968. bring your

  1969. own power

  1970. first and

  1971. foremost

  1972. and you're

  1973. not trying

  1974. to be

  1975. God.

  1976. It just

  1977. flows out

  1978. of being

  1979. formed by

  1980. the promise.

  1981. And that's

  1982. how the

  1983. Christian life

  1984. is to be.

  1985. Not that

  1986. if I don't

  1987. do this

  1988. God can't

  1989. get it

  1990. done.

  1991. But what

  1992. has God

  1993. done for

  1994. me?

  1995. And as

  1996. that becomes

  1997. more real

  1998. to my

  1999. heart

  2000. you look

  2001. around and

  2002. you say

  2003. gosh I

  2004. got to do

  2005. something

  2006. about the

  2007. poor.

  2008. Or I've

  2009. got to do

  2010. something to

  2011. help the

  2012. city be

  2013. more

  2014. prosperous.

  2015. Or I've

  2016. got to do

  2017. something to

  2018. help the

  2019. victims of

  2020. violence.

  2021. Or I've

  2022. got to do

  2023. something about

  2024. the world

  2025. where there's

  2026. true

  2027. poverty.

  2028. I've got to

  2029. be more

  2030. generous.

  2031. As you

  2032. look upon

  2033. the generosity

  2034. of Christ

  2035. you say

  2036. gosh I've

  2037. got to be

  2038. more

  2039. generous.

  2040. as the

  2041. gospel forms

  2042. you realize

  2043. you know

  2044. what I

  2045. need to

  2046. forgive.

  2047. And that's

  2048. a very

  2049. very very

  2050. different way

  2051. of living

  2052. than thinking

  2053. you've got to

  2054. forgive so

  2055. God will

  2056. forgive you.

  2057. Or you've

  2058. got to be

  2059. generous because

  2060. unless you give

  2061. that money God

  2062. can't do

  2063. anything about

  2064. it.

  2065. It's a very

  2066. very very

  2067. very different

  2068. way to live

  2069. than to live

  2070. out of the

  2071. fullness of

  2072. seeing the

  2073. God who

  2074. sees me.

  2075. Please stand.

  2076. Nothing

  2077. special or

  2078. mystical about

  2079. standing but

  2080. you've been

  2081. sitting and

  2082. you're going

  2083. to sit again

  2084. in prayer and

  2085. it's good to

  2086. have a bit of

  2087. a stretch.

  2088. Let's bow

  2089. our heads in

  2090. prayer as we

  2091. stand.

  2092. Father we

  2093. give you

  2094. thanks and

  2095. praise that

  2096. you see us.

  2097. That there

  2098. has never

  2099. been a point

  2100. in time in

  2101. any of our

  2102. lives where

  2103. you have

  2104. not seen

  2105. us.

  2106. That you

  2107. see us as

  2108. we really

  2109. are.

  2110. You see

  2111. us in the

  2112. things you

  2113. see the

  2114. things about

  2115. us that

  2116. are eccentric

  2117. maybe a bit

  2118. kooky.

  2119. You see the

  2120. things about

  2121. us that are

  2122. good and

  2123. true and

  2124. beautiful and

  2125. wise.

  2126. You see the

  2127. things about

  2128. us that

  2129. are wrong

  2130. the wrong

  2131. we've done.

  2132. You see us

  2133. you see us

  2134. perfectly and

  2135. seen as

  2136. perfectly still

  2137. you love

  2138. us and

  2139. send your

  2140. son to

  2141. be our

  2142. savior to

  2143. die upon

  2144. the cross

  2145. and as he

  2146. dies on the

  2147. cross he

  2148. sees each

  2149. one of us

  2150. with eyes

  2151. of love.

  2152. We ask

  2153. Lord that

  2154. you would

  2155. grip us

  2156. with the

  2157. gospel.

  2158. We ask

  2159. Lord that

  2160. you would

  2161. help us

  2162. to put to

  2163. death any

  2164. sense of

  2165. boasting or

  2166. rivalry that

  2167. somehow or

  2168. another unless

  2169. I do what

  2170. only I can

  2171. do you

  2172. cannot get

  2173. good things

  2174. done in

  2175. this world.

  2176. Father put

  2177. that to

  2178. death within

  2179. us.

  2180. But make

  2181. the gospel

  2182. Father the

  2183. promise the

  2184. blessing the

  2185. knowledge that

  2186. you see us

  2187. and love us

  2188. and redeem us

  2189. Father make

  2190. that more and

  2191. more real to

  2192. our heart and

  2193. as you make it

  2194. more real to

  2195. our heart help

  2196. us Father to

  2197. live out of

  2198. that grace

  2199. and to do

  2200. the things that

  2201. your grace

  2202. leads us to

  2203. do not so

  2204. that you will

  2205. love us but

  2206. out of an

  2207. overflow of the

  2208. wonder and the

  2209. marvel of

  2210. your grace and

  2211. love for us.

  2212. And so

  2213. Father we ask

  2214. that your Holy

  2215. Spirit would do

  2216. that wonderful

  2217. and deep work

  2218. within our

  2219. lives because we

  2220. cannot do it in

  2221. our own strength.

  2222. And Father if

  2223. there are any

  2224. who are here or

  2225. watching who

  2226. have not yet

  2227. recognized that

  2228. Jesus is the

  2229. one who sees

  2230. them and loves

  2231. them we ask

  2232. Father that you

  2233. would turn their

  2234. heart to Jesus

  2235. that they like

  2236. us would trust

  2237. him as their

  2238. savior and their

  2239. Lord.

  2240. Lord and we

  2241. ask all of

  2242. these things in

  2243. the name of

  2244. Jesus your

  2245. son and our

  2246. savior and all

  2247. God's people said

  2248. amen.
