  1. Father, sometimes there's stories in the Bible, and especially for us as Canadians,

  2. it's just really hard to understand why they're even in there,

  3. and why you'd ask for something like this to happen.

  4. And Father, sometimes, especially those, mainly those of us who are Christians,

  5. we have a hard time just being honest with you, that we find it puzzling,

  6. and that something like this would be in the Bible.

  7. And so, Father, we come before you. You know how hard it is for us to be honest before you.

  8. And we know, Father, that you want us to know who we really are in the context of who you really are.

  9. And so, Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would do a gentle but very deep work in each one of us

  10. and bring your word deep into our hearts and rule.

  11. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  12. Please be seated.

  13. So, why on earth did I say anything at all like that, especially given the text?

  14. Those of you who aren't aware of it, we're sort of preaching through...

  15. Here at Church of the Messiah, most of the time we either preach through whole books of the Bible or big chunks,

  16. and we're going through the story cycle, the series of stories about Abraham in the book of Genesis.

  17. And the reason I sort of prayed the way that I did is that we're going to look at circumcision today.

  18. This is the story where the rite of circumcision was first given to the Jewish people.

  19. And so, that's...

  20. I mean, if you think about it for a second...

  21. Like, just imagine Ricky Gervais doing a comment on the rite of circumcision.

  22. I mean, just don't imagine it necessarily with all the foul language.

  23. But...

  24. Or maybe you can.

  25. I don't know what's going on in your own heads.

  26. But, I mean, he would make a whole routine about...

  27. Isn't everything about this story a perfect example of why people should run away from religion?

  28. If the religion requires, you know, cutting off part of...

  29. Pardon my language.

  30. The male penis.

  31. Isn't that sort of like prima facie evidence that you should just run as fast and as far away as you possibly can from such religion?

  32. You can imagine how he would handle something like this.

  33. So, I don't want to trigger anybody.

  34. But one of the things that I think we need to think about a little tiny bit before we look at this is something which is very relevant.

  35. Because circumcision on the face of it just seems like a repulsive type of practice.

  36. And why God demands it is...

  37. It would be a question if we're sort of honest about it.

  38. But I don't want to trigger anybody on this.

  39. But I think part of the way that we need to start to think about it is to think about death.

  40. I was at a funeral this week.

  41. And I'm sort of bringing it right up front about we're going to talk about death a little bit.

  42. I have no idea if any of you either here or online have just had a loved one die.

  43. Especially I'm going to make a comment about a child dying.

  44. And that might be very hard for you.

  45. I don't mean to trigger anything.

  46. But it's best actually if we talk about these things and think about them.

  47. Because death is actually that one thing that we can't avoid.

  48. That's going to happen.

  49. Has happened to those that we know and love.

  50. And will one day happen to us.

  51. And I think if we think about death a little bit.

  52. It's going to be easier to think about this text.

  53. And why it is that something as weird as circumcision would be required by God of Abraham.

  54. You know like in the funeral that I just was at.

  55. There's a whole mixture of types of images.

  56. And in some ways with one or two exceptions.

  57. It sort of missed a couple of the different ways that human beings think about death.

  58. But it sort of captured the way that most Canadians think about death.

  59. You go to a better place.

  60. You go to a type of a spiritual place.

  61. Something where there's really no bodies.

  62. You go.

  63. You're all.

  64. When they die.

  65. They're sort of.

  66. Now the person is with you still.

  67. In some way.

  68. When they die.

  69. They're now sort of living in your memories.

  70. And in your heart.

  71. And in your strength.

  72. When they die.

  73. They're now part of everything that's around us.

  74. So that when we see the trees.

  75. Or see.

  76. Or feel the wind.

  77. We can remember that our loved one is now part of all of that.

  78. And then of course.

  79. If in a more.

  80. Like India.

  81. And countries like that.

  82. Ultimately the dead person is just being reincarnated.

  83. Somewhere else.

  84. But the end product of all of that.

  85. Will be that eventually they just merge with the one.

  86. They lose their identity.

  87. The primary analogy is.

  88. It's like a drop of water.

  89. Joining the sea or the ocean.

  90. And of course.

  91. The drop of water.

  92. You stop having any independent type of existence.

  93. You're all part of just the everything.

  94. And then you have that minority.

  95. Perfectly typified by Ricky Gervais.

  96. Who would just say.

  97. You don't go anywhere.

  98. When you're dead.

  99. You're dead.

  100. To believe anything other than that.

  101. Is just to be irrational.

  102. And anti-scientific.

  103. When you die.

  104. You die.

  105. That's it.

  106. Sort of.

  107. I don't hope I trigger other people with this.

  108. My wife and I watched the first half of Ricky Gervais.

  109. Controversial comedy routine.

  110. That's on Netflix.

  111. The only reason we watched half of it.

  112. Is just because.

  113. We watch it late night.

  114. And it was just.

  115. We were tired.

  116. We wanted to go to bed.

  117. I'm not recommending you watch it.

  118. It's very.

  119. Filled with foul language.

  120. He actually talks a little bit.

  121. About the ridiculousness.

  122. Of.

  123. Of the different views of death.

  124. And he makes it very clear.

  125. As a very public atheist.

  126. That when you die.

  127. You die.

  128. There's no.

  129. Nothing.

  130. You're just.

  131. You're gone.

  132. And then he shared how.

  133. People have tweeted him.

  134. And said.

  135. Is that what you'd say.

  136. To a grieving mother and father.

  137. As they're watching their child die.

  138. Is that what you would say.

  139. If you were there by that bedside.

  140. With them.

  141. And the dying child.

  142. And his response was.

  143. He tweeted back.

  144. And says.

  145. It all depends on whether it's a pain gig.

  146. Sir.

  147. It was funnier than special.

  148. In other words.

  149. He didn't really answer the question.

  150. But he's very unapologetic.

  151. About.

  152. What.

  153. He believes about death.

  154. The Bible is very.

  155. Very wise.

  156. And the Bible.

  157. And part of the problem.

  158. That we Canadians have.

  159. When we read the Bible.

  160. Is both.

  161. It's.

  162. Deep wisdom.

  163. And the fact.

  164. That it's very frank.

  165. About the nature of life.

  166. And talks about it.

  167. Very frankly.

  168. And we.

  169. Are very used.

  170. To using euphemisms.

  171. And dodging questions.

  172. And not really.

  173. Thinking very clearly.

  174. Although we don't realize that.

  175. But that's just sort of.

  176. A deep reflex.

  177. Within us.

  178. And so it catches us.

  179. By surprise.

  180. When we cross.

  181. Come across.

  182. Texts.

  183. Which are just very.

  184. Very frank.

  185. About the human condition.

  186. And.

  187. And ultimately.

  188. The Bible wants us.

  189. To understand the human condition.

  190. So that we will understand.

  191. Our need for God.

  192. The triune God.

  193. Not the God of Canadians.

  194. But the triune God.

  195. The Father.

  196. The Son.

  197. And the Holy Spirit.

  198. Three persons.

  199. One God.

  200. Forever and ever.

  201. A God of.

  202. Unending love.

  203. The only God.

  204. That you can realistically.

  205. Say is a God of unending love.

  206. Because.

  207. If God is just all things.

  208. Then that means.

  209. God is both love.

  210. And hate.

  211. He's.

  212. Life.

  213. And death.

  214. And corruption.

  215. He's terror.

  216. And he's joy.

  217. And he's all of those things.

  218. Equally.

  219. And you can't really pick.

  220. One over the other.

  221. And if God is just the one.

  222. Then that also just means.

  223. At the end of the day.

  224. He can't really be love.

  225. If there's just the one.

  226. If there's just the ocean.

  227. And the ocean doesn't love.

  228. All the things that make up the ocean.

  229. That's not love.

  230. That's just.

  231. The ocean.

  232. And if you just have a solitary God.

  233. Then you can't really have a God of love.

  234. Because.

  235. Love requires.

  236. Something outside of the person.

  237. To love.

  238. And only the Bible.

  239. Only the Bible.

  240. Describes the God.

  241. That really is the God of love.

  242. The God that we ultimately long for.

  243. That from all eternity.

  244. The Father has loved the Son.

  245. And the Son has loved the Father.

  246. And from all eternity.

  247. God is good.

  248. Why?

  249. Well because from all of eternity.

  250. The God has been.

  251. The Father has been good to the Son.

  252. And Son has been good to the Father.

  253. And the Holy Spirit.

  254. And only the God of the Bible.

  255. Can truly be understood.

  256. As a God of beauty.

  257. Because.

  258. From all eternity.

  259. The Father in a sense.

  260. Has seen the beauty of the Son.

  261. And the Son.

  262. The beauty of the Father.

  263. And both the beauty of the Holy Spirit.

  264. Because there's an other.

  265. For.

  266. And there needs to be an other.

  267. For there to be beauty.

  268. And so from all eternity.

  269. There is this God.

  270. Who's been a God of justice.

  271. A God of goodness.

  272. A God of.

  273. Of beauty.

  274. A God of love.

  275. A God that we ultimately long for.

  276. At a very, very, very deep level.

  277. Only the Bible reveals.

  278. Such a God.

  279. And it's in these stories.

  280. Even the oddest and hardest parts of them.

  281. That God reveals.

  282. Himself.

  283. The reality of who he is.

  284. To human beings.

  285. Like us.

  286. So what does the Bible say?

  287. What is this odd story.

  288. That involves circumcision.

  289. And how can we sort of understand.

  290. Why it's actually wisdom for us?

  291. Well.

  292. Turn in your Bibles.

  293. To Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  294. And in the first verse.

  295. It's going to begin like this.

  296. And just.

  297. If you've been following along.

  298. In chapter 12.

  299. God makes this base.

  300. Fundamental promise.

  301. That God is going to be.

  302. He's calling Abram.

  303. And he's going to be a bless.

  304. He's going to bless Abram.

  305. He's going to bless Abram.

  306. With children.

  307. With land.

  308. And God is going to bless him.

  309. To make him into a people.

  310. A multitude of peoples.

  311. And that they will be a blessing.

  312. And Abram is revealed.

  313. As being 65 years old.

  314. Or 75 years old.

  315. And his wife is 65.

  316. And they have.

  317. They've never been able to have children.

  318. And yet God makes this promise to them.

  319. And that they're called.

  320. And there's.

  321. And then.

  322. This part just before this.

  323. Sarah.

  324. Sarah.

  325. Gets tired of waiting.

  326. For God.

  327. To do something.

  328. So she tries to fix it.

  329. According to the cultural wisdom.

  330. Of her day.

  331. By allowing her servant.

  332. To start sleeping.

  333. With Abraham.

  334. And all that does.

  335. Is it produces a baby.

  336. But all it does.

  337. Is produce chaos.

  338. And hatred.

  339. And resentment.

  340. And it's a whole thing.

  341. Is a mess.

  342. And it's in that context.

  343. Of everything being a mess.

  344. That chapter 17 begins.

  345. And it goes like this.

  346. It says.

  347. When Abraham was 99 years old.

  348. The Lord appeared to Abraham.

  349. And said to him.

  350. I am God almighty.

  351. Walk before me.

  352. And be blameless.

  353. That I may make my covenant.

  354. Between me and you.

  355. And may multiply you greatly.

  356. Now just sort of pause there for a second.

  357. Some of us who have been Christians for a long time.

  358. You've probably seen.

  359. Or posters.

  360. Or sung songs.

  361. That mention El Shaddai.

  362. And that's the word here.

  363. God almighty.

  364. Is the word in Hebrew.

  365. El Shaddai.

  366. So that's where it comes from.

  367. In fact.

  368. Actually one of the things.

  369. Which is interesting about this story.

  370. Sort of a geeky moment.

  371. Is you'll notice it says.

  372. When Abraham.

  373. Verse 1.

  374. Was 99 years old.

  375. The Lord.

  376. That's sort of the covenant name for God.

  377. Appeared.

  378. And then God is revealed.

  379. Not just his Lord.

  380. Yahweh.

  381. The covenant God.

  382. But as El Shaddai.

  383. The almighty one.

  384. And then throughout the entire rest of the story.

  385. The word for God.

  386. That's used.

  387. Is the most abstract word for God.

  388. The most transcendent.

  389. Distant.

  390. God.

  391. That's over all things.

  392. Is the.

  393. So three different names for God.

  394. Mentioned in the text.

  395. That's a bit of an aside.

  396. But here's the thing.

  397. God says.

  398. I'm going to make a covenant with you.

  399. He's already inaugurated the covenant.

  400. In chapter 15.

  401. And he's reminding Abraham.

  402. That he's going to make a covenant with him.

  403. And what a covenant is.

  404. Is.

  405. It's a.

  406. It's in a sense.

  407. A bound.

  408. Relationship.

  409. Of two persons.

  410. It's a bound.

  411. Relationship.

  412. Of two persons.

  413. Or in this particular case.

  414. Of more.

  415. A secure.

  416. Relationship.

  417. That's not really to come to an end.

  418. And is to be characterized.

  419. By a deep relationship.

  420. With things like love.

  421. And intimacy.

  422. And presence.

  423. And.

  424. And if you think about it for a second.

  425. As I was describing.

  426. How.

  427. Only the Bible describes a God.

  428. That can realistically.

  429. Be understood.

  430. As a God of love.

  431. As a God of goodness.

  432. Of a God.

  433. As a God of beauty.

  434. Only really.

  435. A God of truth.

  436. As well.

  437. Because.

  438. The Father is always true to the Son.

  439. And the Son.

  440. Is true to the Father.

  441. And they know each other truly.

  442. There has to be something.

  443. Other than God.

  444. For God to truly be a God of truth.

  445. And.

  446. And.

  447. And so.

  448. Only the Bible has a God.

  449. That's a God of goodness.

  450. Of.

  451. Of love.

  452. Of beauty.

  453. Of truth.

  454. Only the Bible has that.

  455. And in a sense.

  456. It's.

  457. It's out of this.

  458. It's also in a sense.

  459. If you think about it.

  460. If there's a Father.

  461. The Son.

  462. And the Holy Spirit.

  463. Three persons.

  464. One God.

  465. Forever and ever.

  466. That.

  467. That.

  468. That's already.

  469. God.

  470. God doesn't need.

  471. Any human beings.

  472. Because he's lonely.

  473. But.

  474. As we all know.

  475. In the best of human beings.

  476. It's of the very nature.

  477. Of love.

  478. It's of the very.

  479. Very nature of love.

  480. That love be extended.

  481. Beyond.

  482. It's like.

  483. The very nature of goodness.

  484. That love be extended.

  485. Beyond.

  486. I am now.

  487. In day nine.

  488. Of having no hydro.

  489. There's a couple of us.

  490. In the congregation.

  491. Who've now.

  492. There was one.

  493. A fellow.

  494. At the eight o'clock service.

  495. He might be here as well.

  496. And.

  497. We've now.

  498. We're now on day nine.

  499. With no hydro.

  500. And.

  501. One of the things.

  502. I can tell you.

  503. About this odd experience.

  504. Is that neighbors.

  505. Have never talked to each other.

  506. More than they have.

  507. Than during these nine days.

  508. I've had my longest talks.

  509. With my next door neighbor.

  510. Since this has happened.

  511. And in very.

  512. Very helpful.

  513. And friendly ways.

  514. These conversations.

  515. Have been.

  516. Have been going on.

  517. And.

  518. You know.

  519. The fact of the matter is.

  520. That we.

  521. We long to have.

  522. Some type of a community.

  523. We long.

  524. To have some type of a relationship.

  525. Which is very stable.

  526. We live in a world.

  527. Where relationships.

  528. Aren't stable.

  529. Where many marriages.

  530. End in divorce.

  531. Where many.

  532. Parents.

  533. Don't treat their kids.

  534. Very well.

  535. Where bosses.

  536. Don't often.

  537. Treat their employees.

  538. Very well.

  539. Where companies.

  540. Go in and out of business.

  541. The idea.

  542. That in the 50s.

  543. Somebody might join a company.

  544. And be with it.

  545. For 30 or 40 years.

  546. Is sort of an idea.

  547. Of the past.

  548. We.

  549. We.

  550. We live in a world.

  551. Where all of these relationships.

  552. Seem to be very.

  553. Very just.

  554. Impermanent.

  555. And yet.

  556. For.

  557. For each of us.

  558. We.

  559. We long.

  560. To have something.

  561. Which is permanent.

  562. It's like.

  563. One.

  564. It's very interesting.

  565. The way.

  566. Many Canadians.

  567. Will talk about.

  568. The person.

  569. That they'd like.

  570. To live.

  571. To spend the rest.

  572. Of their time with.

  573. Is that.

  574. The rest of their life.

  575. Is they're looking.

  576. For a soul mate.

  577. They're looking.

  578. For something.

  579. Or someone.

  580. That is so close.

  581. To them.

  582. In their soul.

  583. That there could be.

  584. Never really be.

  585. A break.

  586. Of that.

  587. We have this desire.

  588. For a.

  589. A covenanted.

  590. Relationship.

  591. And what the Bible.

  592. Says.

  593. Is that the God.

  594. Who from all eternity.

  595. Was seen.

  596. The beauty.

  597. The father.

  598. Seeing the beauty.

  599. Of the son.

  600. And the son.

  601. Seeing the beauty.

  602. Of the father.

  603. And the.

  604. Both.

  605. Seeing the beauty.

  606. Of the Holy Spirit.

  607. And the Holy Spirit.

  608. Seeing the beauty.

  609. Of them.

  610. And the goodness.

  611. And the love.

  612. Etc.

  613. That that God.

  614. Desires to have.

  615. A relationship.

  616. With human beings.

  617. Like you and me.

  618. And not just.

  619. A fleeting.

  620. Relationship.

  621. He doesn't want to have.

  622. A one night stand.

  623. With human beings.

  624. He doesn't want to hook up.

  625. With human beings.

  626. He doesn't want to look up.

  627. A human being.

  628. On tinder.

  629. And then discard.

  630. That human being.

  631. What Bible.

  632. The Bible.

  633. Is revealing here.

  634. Is that the God.

  635. Who really does exist.

  636. That we'll discover.

  637. Throughout the rest of the Bible.

  638. Is in fact.

  639. Almost in a sense.

  640. A community.

  641. In a sense.

  642. With the father.

  643. The son.

  644. The Holy Spirit.

  645. Three persons.

  646. Yet one God.

  647. That that God.

  648. Desires to have.

  649. A relationship.

  650. Of love.

  651. And intimacy.

  652. And presence.

  653. With ordinary.

  654. Human beings.

  655. Like you and me.

  656. And that's not.

  657. A romantic view.

  658. Of the world.

  659. That's the real view.

  660. Of the world.

  661. That's the truth.

  662. And that's what we see here.

  663. Look at the text again.

  664. The first couple of verses.

  665. When Abram.

  666. Was 99 years old.

  667. The Lord appeared to Abram.

  668. And said to him.

  669. I am El Shaddai.

  670. Walk before me.

  671. And be blameless.

  672. And walk before me.

  673. Implies that.

  674. That the God almighty.

  675. El Shaddai.

  676. The Lord.

  677. The transcendent God.

  678. Desires to actually.

  679. Be with you.

  680. And he wants you to walk.

  681. Not as if.

  682. There is no God.

  683. Not as if.

  684. You are a God.

  685. But to walk.

  686. And spend the day.

  687. With you.

  688. And the word.

  689. Blameless.

  690. It does have a tiny bit.

  691. Of a moral aspect to it.

  692. But it's fundamentally.

  693. A relationship word.

  694. It's a word.

  695. Of maintaining relationship.

  696. To use sort of.

  697. A marriage analogy.

  698. It would be as if.

  699. You know.

  700. Louise and I.

  701. Have been married a long time.

  702. And it's definitely.

  703. Not the case.

  704. That we've never had a fight.

  705. Or that.

  706. That we've never been.

  707. Unhappy with each other.

  708. Or definitely.

  709. She's never been.

  710. Not the case.

  711. That she's never been.

  712. Unhappy with me.

  713. But the goal of the marriage.

  714. Is in a sense.

  715. To be blameless.

  716. That the relationship.

  717. Is never severed.

  718. And that it's restored.

  719. And that's the idea here.

  720. And that's the fundamental thing.

  721. That God is offering.

  722. To Abram.

  723. And he's already inaugurated.

  724. In chapter 15.

  725. You can go back.

  726. And listen to the sermon.

  727. Where God takes upon himself.

  728. All of the obligation.

  729. To make this work.

  730. And now.

  731. The covenant.

  732. Which was inaugurated.

  733. In chapter 15.

  734. It has to be confirmed.

  735. Abraham has to say.

  736. Yes to it.

  737. And then after.

  738. Abram says yes to it.

  739. God in chapter 22.

  740. Is going to make.

  741. His final confirmation.

  742. Of the whole thing.

  743. But that's sort of.

  744. Jumping ahead.

  745. And you look at it.

  746. In verse 2.

  747. I am El Shaddai.

  748. My desire.

  749. Abram.

  750. Is that you'll walk with me.

  751. That you'll be blameless.

  752. That we have a relationship.

  753. That I may make.

  754. I will make.

  755. My covenant.

  756. Between me and you.

  757. And may multiply you greatly.

  758. And God is saying this.

  759. To a man.

  760. Who's just said.

  761. Is 99 years old.

  762. And his wife is 89.

  763. And they've never been able.

  764. To have children.

  765. And for many of you.

  766. You weren't interested.

  767. In that other relational.

  768. Stuff stuff.

  769. You were sort of stuck.

  770. At how on earth.

  771. It can possibly be.

  772. That Abram was 99 years old.

  773. And have a baby.

  774. Once again.

  775. I just was thinking.

  776. About it this week.

  777. Because I watched.

  778. The first part of.

  779. This Ricky Gervais.

  780. Special.

  781. Hard to watch things.

  782. When you have no hydro.

  783. And often.

  784. The internet's not working.

  785. At our house as well.

  786. Actually.

  787. That's a whole other.

  788. You know.

  789. A whole other thing.

  790. But I could just imagine.

  791. What Ricky Gervais.

  792. Would say about a story.

  793. Like this.

  794. George.

  795. You actually believe.

  796. Like you're so stupid.

  797. You actually believe.

  798. 99 year old man.

  799. Can make an 89 year old.

  800. Woman pregnant.

  801. I mean.

  802. He probably.

  803. Actually.

  804. He might say.

  805. He probably.

  806. Not say stupid.

  807. He'd say something.

  808. Which was more colorful.

  809. Which I can't say.

  810. In church.

  811. He'd call me.

  812. A variety of names.

  813. For being so stupid.

  814. To believe it.

  815. Well.

  816. We're going to get to that.

  817. I'm not going to dodge.

  818. This particular issue.

  819. But let's look.

  820. And see now.

  821. What God.

  822. Going to actually do.

  823. This is what his desire.

  824. Is for Abram.

  825. And look at all of the things.

  826. That God makes a claim.

  827. A promise.

  828. That he's going to do.

  829. It begins at verse 3.

  830. Then Abram fell on his face.

  831. Now.

  832. By the way.

  833. Here.

  834. It's not clear.

  835. Whether Abram wanted to fall on his face.

  836. In worship.

  837. Or whether.

  838. Just.

  839. Being in God's presence.

  840. And hearing God speak.

  841. Made him fall on his face.

  842. Maybe it's both.

  843. Doesn't matter.

  844. But Abram just goes down.

  845. And God said to him.

  846. Behold.

  847. My covenant is with you.

  848. And you shall be the father.

  849. Of a multitude.

  850. Of nations.

  851. No longer shall your name.

  852. Be called Abram.

  853. But your name shall be Abraham.

  854. For I.

  855. Have made.

  856. You the father.

  857. Of a multitude.

  858. Of nations.

  859. By the way.

  860. What happens sometimes is.

  861. When God wants to do something.

  862. In these original languages.

  863. When there has to be a promise.

  864. Of the certainty.

  865. Of the future.

  866. They use the past tense.

  867. To communicate.

  868. The certainty.

  869. Of the future.

  870. No longer.

  871. Verse five again.

  872. No longer shall your name.

  873. Be called Abram.

  874. But your name.

  875. Shall be.

  876. Abraham.

  877. For I have made you.

  878. The father.

  879. Of a multitude.

  880. Of nations.

  881. And I will make you.

  882. Exceedingly fruitful.

  883. And I.

  884. Will make you.

  885. Into nations.

  886. And kings.

  887. Shall come.

  888. From you.

  889. And I will establish.

  890. My covenant.

  891. Between me and you.

  892. And your offspring.

  893. After you.

  894. Throughout their generations.

  895. For an everlasting covenant.

  896. And here.

  897. The word everlasting.

  898. Basically.

  899. It's.

  900. Into the future.

  901. Without end.

  902. That's sort of the.

  903. The idea.

  904. In the original language.

  905. Sort of captured.

  906. In the old prayer book.

  907. When it says.

  908. A world without end.

  909. That phrase.

  910. Those of you.

  911. Are familiar.

  912. With the old prayer book.

  913. When they'll.

  914. They'll often say.

  915. Things world without end.

  916. That's actually.

  917. Capturing the Hebrew.

  918. Idea.

  919. Which is expressed here.

  920. To be.

  921. Sorry.

  922. I'll read verse seven.

  923. Again.

  924. And I will establish.

  925. My covenant.

  926. Between me and you.

  927. And your offspring.

  928. After you.

  929. Throughout their generations.

  930. For an everlasting.

  931. Covenant.

  932. To be God.

  933. To you.

  934. And to your offspring.

  935. After you.

  936. And I will give.

  937. To you.

  938. And to your offspring.

  939. After you.

  940. The land.

  941. Of your sojournings.

  942. All the land.

  943. Of Canaan.

  944. For an everlasting.

  945. Possession.

  946. That's a world.

  947. Without end.

  948. Possession.

  949. And I.

  950. Will be.

  951. Their.

  952. God.

  953. And that's the heart.

  954. Of what God is.

  955. Notice all of the things.

  956. Abram has no children.

  957. He has no land.

  958. He has no.

  959. He's not.

  960. The head of a nation.

  961. I will make nations.

  962. Come from you.

  963. I will give you the land.

  964. You have no.

  965. Children.

  966. I will give you children.

  967. Or a child.

  968. And you will multiply.

  969. And most importantly.

  970. I.

  971. Will.

  972. Be.

  973. Your.

  974. God.

  975. So God looks to the unlikely.

  976. The unqualified.

  977. The unsuitable.

  978. The childless.

  979. Ninety nine.

  980. Year old man.

  981. And he makes these very.

  982. Very concrete.

  983. Real.

  984. Promises.

  985. About community.

  986. About nation.

  987. About family.

  988. About babies.

  989. And about land.

  990. Now I'm going to circle around to that.

  991. Why circumcision.

  992. In fact.

  993. Actually.

  994. There's sort of three questions.

  995. Around this text.

  996. If you think about it.

  997. The first one is.

  998. How on earth.

  999. Could a ninety nine year old man.

1000. Make an eighty nine year old woman pregnant.

  1001. Is the Bible.

  1002. Just being naive.

  1003. And foolish.

  1004. Is it talking.

  1005. Fairy tale language.

  1006. Second.

  1007. Why circumcision.

  1008. Why something.

  1009. That seems so barbaric.

  1010. And third.

  1011. Isn't circumcision.

  1012. Cruel.

  1013. And doesn't it reveal.

  1014. The masochistic.

  1015. Element.

1016. Of the God of the Bible.

  1017. Well.

  1018. Let's look.

  1019. Verse nine.

1020. And God said to Abram.

  1021. As for you.

1022. You shall keep my covenant.

1023. So those are all the things.

  1024. God's going to do.

  1025. God's going to.

1026. Actually give him a baby.

1027. He's going to not only give him a baby.

  1028. But ultimately.

  1029. There'll eventually be multitudes.

  1030. There'll be nations.

  1031. There'll be land.

  1032. There'll be.

  1033. All of this.

  1034. What's Abram to do.

  1035. How is Abram.

  1036. To receive the covenant.

1037. And show that he is received.

1038. And wants to enter into this covenant.

1039. And how will this be marked?

1040. Verse 9, and God said to Abram,

1041. As for you, you shall keep my covenant,

1042. you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.

1043. This is my covenant which you shall keep between me and you

1044. and your offspring after you.

1045. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

1046. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins,

1047. and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

1048. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised.

1049. Every male throughout your generations,

1050. whether born in your house or bought with your money,

1051. from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,

1052. both he who is born in your house

1053. and he who is bought with your money

  1054. shall surely be circumcised.

1055. So shall my covenant be in your flesh,

  1056. an everlasting covenant.

1057. Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin

1058. shall be cut off from his people.

1059. He has broken my covenant.

1060. And God said to Abram,

1061. As for Sarai, your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai,

1062. but Sarah shall be her name.

  1063. I will bless her.

1064. And moreover, I will give you a son by her.

  1065. I will bless her.

1066. And she shall become nations.

1067. Kings of people shall come from her.

1068. Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed

  1069. and said to himself,

1070. Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old?

1071. Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old,

  1072. bear a child?

1073. And Abraham said to God,

1074. Oh, that Ishmael might live before you.

  1075. And God said,

1076. No, but Sarah, your wife,

1077. shall bear you a son,

1078. and you shall call his name Isaac.

1079. I will establish my covenant with him

  1080. as an everlasting covenant

1081. for his offspring after him.

  1082. So, first of all,

1083. we can see that the Bible is very realistic.

  1084. Abraham doesn't just say,

  1085. Oh, yeah, yeah, God,

1086. you said that's going to happen,

1087. it's just going to happen.

1088. It's just sort of the same thing

1089. when I was introducing the gospel text.

  1090. Sometime down the road,

1091. people will listen to just the sermon

  1092. and not the service.

  1093. But in this service,

1094. I was introducing the gospel text,

1095. which we read in the service, John.

1096. And one of the things I pointed out

1097. is that Jesus knew the night before

1098. that he was going to be captured that night.

1099. He knew he was going to die on the cross the next day.

1100. And he knew that none of his disciples

1101. believed that he would rise from the dead.

1102. He knew that the Jewish authorities

  1103. didn't believe it.

1104. The Roman authorities didn't believe it.

1105. The soldiers who carried out the crucifixion

  1106. didn't believe it.

1107. He knew that his mom didn't believe it.

1108. His brothers and sisters didn't believe it.

1109. His disciples didn't believe it.

  1110. Nobody believed it.

  1111. The fact,

1112. one of the things is

1113. if you read the ancient biographies of Jesus,

  1114. it's very, very clear.

1115. The biographies make it very clear

  1116. that nobody believed

1117. that Jesus would rise from the dead.

  1118. Nobody.

  1119. Nobody, nobody, nobody.

1120. And we can see here in the text

  1121. that Abraham,

1122. and later on in the next story,

  1123. that Sarah,

  1124. none of them believed

1125. that Abraham would be able to have a baby,

  1126. that Sarah,

1127. that Abraham would be able to make God,

  1128. that Abraham,

1129. that God would be able to make Abraham

  1130. make Sarah,

  1131. get all the lines,

  1132. the makes correct,

  1133. make her pregnant.

  1134. So,

  1135. once again,

1136. you can sort of imagine

1137. what Ricky Gervais would say about this.

  1138. But here's the thing.

1139. This is a very important thing.

1140. God is making a claim here

1141. that he is going to do a miracle.

1142. And that's part of the reason

  1143. why the age 99

  1144. is very, very significant.

  1145. The age of 99

  1146. is very significant

1147. because it's going to be made

  1148. very clear to Abraham

1149. and to all of the Jewish people

  1150. who come after

  1151. and to us

  1152. that it's a miracle,

  1153. that God does something

  1154. that could not possibly,

  1155. under any stretch

  1156. of the imagination,

  1157. under any circumstances,

1158. could it have been accomplished,

  1159. humanly speaking.

  1160. It's completely

  1161. and utterly a miracle.

  1162. And so,

  1163. our skeptical friends

  1164. will say,

  1165. George,

  1166. this is completely

  1167. and utterly ridiculous.

  1168. How can you believe

  1169. that life could come

  1170. from such barrenness?

  1171. But here's the thing

  1172. which is very significant.

  1173. Ricky Gervais

  1174. and I both believe

  1175. that life comes

  1176. from barrenness.

  1177. The University of Ottawa,

  1178. the CBC,

  1179. CTV,

  1180. the Liberal Party,

  1181. the Conservative Party,

  1182. Secular Canada,

  1183. they and I

  1184. both believe

  1185. that life

  1186. comes from barrenness.

  1187. And you'll say

  1188. that's completely

  1189. and utterly absurd,

  1190. George,

  1191. that's not true.

  1192. And I will say

  1193. it is completely true

  1194. because that's what

  1195. you believe about evolution.

  1196. The very, very heart,

  1197. the basis

1198. of all secular Canadian thought

  1199. is that life emerged

  1200. out of barrenness

  1201. and death.

  1202. Ricky Gervais

  1203. believes that.

  1204. Which is more likely?

  1205. Which is more likely

  1206. to believe?

  1207. That a God

  1208. who is life himself

  1209. can make the barren

  1210. produce life

  1211. or remain

  1212. to believe

  1213. that unending

  1214. barrenness

  1215. can somehow

  1216. or another

  1217. produce life.

  1218. I would say

  1219. that one of us

  1220. is actually

  1221. believing something

  1222. which is more credible

  1223. and that Christians

  1224. in fact

  1225. are believing

  1226. something

  1227. that is more reasonable.

  1228. because the fact

  1229. of the matter

  1230. is

  1231. that really

  1232. anywhere

  1233. other than

  1234. the very, very

  1235. beginnings

  1236. of human belief

  1237. origins

  1238. nobody believes

  1239. that happens today.

  1240. If somebody

  1241. was to say

  1242. that there was

  1243. a whole pile

  1244. of sand

1245. and all of a sudden

  1246. out of that sand

  1247. and a whole pile

  1248. of other things

1249. that there was a tornado

  1250. and out of it

  1251. life emerged

  1252. like nobody

  1253. would believe that.

  1254. Like nobody

  1255. would believe that.

  1256. Nobody would believe it.

  1257. Everybody would go

  1258. looking

  1259. for some type

  1260. of microorganisms

  1261. that happened

  1262. to be there

  1263. that we just

  1264. weren't able

  1265. to detect.

  1266. Why?

  1267. Because everybody

  1268. knows that life

  1269. does not come

  1270. from barrenness

  1271. except when it

  1272. comes for the

  1273. foundation

  1274. of secular

  1275. Canada's belief.

  1276. We,

  1277. Christians,

  1278. are not gullible.

  1279. We know

  1280. that life

  1281. does not come

  1282. from barrenness.

  1283. Abram knew that.

  1284. Sarah knew that.

  1285. It's a miracle.

  1286. God did

  1287. what only God

  1288. could do.

  1289. What about

  1290. why circumcision?

  1291. Well,

  1292. I mean,

  1293. there's several

  1294. things here

  1295. which is going

  1296. to be a very,

  1297. very,

  1298. part of it

  1299. is a great

  1300. threat to Canadians.

  1301. Canadians.

  1302. Canadians.

  1303. Canadians.

  1304. Canadians.

  1305. Canadians.

  1306. Canadians.

  1307. Canadians.

  1308. In a sense,

  1309. the source

  1310. of procreation

  1311. is marked

  1312. as belonging

  1313. to God

  1314. with an indelible

  1315. mark

  1316. for the covenant

  1317. people.

  1318. And the circumcision

  1319. as the mark

  1320. that you've entered

  1321. into this covenant

  1322. community,

  1323. I mean,

  1324. it's going to come

  1325. to adults.

  1326. We're going to see

1327. at the end of the story,

  1328. or maybe we won't.

1329. If you read to the end,

  1330. you'll see that

1331. at the end of this,

  1332. Abraham gets himself

  1333. at 99 circumcised.

  1334. Everybody in his household

  1335. is circumcised

1336. by the end of the story.

  1337. But fundamentally,

1338. at the heart of it,

  1339. is that the agent,

  1340. in a sense,

  1341. the means of procreation

  1342. is marked indelibly.

1343. That means it can't be removed

1344. as being claimed by God,

  1345. as belonging to God,

  1346. that life,

  1347. ultimately,

  1348. is something

  1349. that comes from God.

  1350. The miracle

  1351. is a miracle

  1352. of life

  1353. coming to barrenness,

  1354. and the indelible mark

  1355. of belonging

  1356. to the community

  1357. is a reminder

  1358. that God

  1359. is the source

  1360. of life

  1361. and claims it.

  1362. And why the cutting

  1363. and the blood

  1364. and the pain?

1365. Well, the fact of the matter

  1366. is,

1367. and this is far harder

  1368. for us,

1369. because as we all know,

  1370. meat actually doesn't

  1371. come from an animal.

  1372. Meat is made

  1373. in a factory,

  1374. and it comes

  1375. pre-wrapped

  1376. in saran wrap

  1377. or whatever it is,

  1378. that there's no animals

  1379. that have been killed,

  1380. there's no blood,

  1381. there's no gore,

  1382. there's nothing like that,

  1383. and so it's harder

  1384. for us to see

  1385. the earthiness

  1386. and the reality

  1387. of every time

  1388. we have a hamburger,

  1389. the fact that

  1390. that was originally

  1391. a cow,

  1392. or if you're eating

  1393. a pork hamburger,

1394. it was originally a pig,

  1395. the earthiness of it.

1396. But here is the other

  1397. thing about it,

  1398. which is so hard

  1399. for us as Christians

1400. to get our minds around.

  1401. Like, think about

  1402. how we Canadians

  1403. think about death.

1404. Like, we live a real life,

1405. and we live a real life

  1406. where there's a real world,

  1407. and we're like,

1408. if we go and we buy

  1409. a dozen donuts

  1410. from Tim Hortons,

  1411. and afterwards,

1412. as we're going to the car,

  1413. we count them,

1414. and they only give us nine,

  1415. what do we do?

  1416. We go back,

  1417. we bought twelve,

1418. you only gave us nine.

  1419. We don't spiritualize

  1420. what happened to it.

  1421. But how is it

  1422. that we Canadians,

  1423. who first of all,

1424. are in denial of the fact

  1425. that we believe

  1426. that life comes out

  1427. of barrenness,

1428. also at the end of the day,

  1429. all of our understandings

1430. of the end of life

  1431. is completely and utterly

  1432. non-physical.

  1433. It's just,

  1434. like,

  1435. sorry,

  1436. I don't want to offend,

  1437. but it's like,

  1438. woo,

  1439. woo.

  1440. I mean,

  1441. that's why Ricky Gervais

1442. can go to make a lot of hay

1443. out of making fun of it.

  1444. Like,

  1445. really?

  1446. Like,

  1447. really,

  1448. you think about it

  1449. for a second,

  1450. that when you die,

  1451. you know,

1452. when your loved one dies,

  1453. sorry,

  1454. I'm offending you,

  1455. your loved one dies,

  1456. they're with you

  1457. in your spirit.

  1458. Well,

  1459. that's actually a bit creepy.

  1460. And how does that

  1461. actually work?

  1462. So,

  1463. when your loved one,

  1464. their loved ones died,

  1465. so,

  1466. you know,

  1467. your parent dies,

  1468. but their,

  1469. your parents,

  1470. grandparents have already died,

  1471. so,

  1472. your grandparents'

  1473. spirits are sort of

  1474. with your parent

1475. and they're now with you?

1476. And then you go back

  1477. for generations,

  1478. like,

  1479. what does it mean?

  1480. Like,

  1481. you mean,

  1482. like,

  1483. within you,

  1484. you have,

  1485. like,

  1486. a million,

  1487. a billion,

  1488. like,

  1489. spirits all sort of

  1490. present with you?

  1491. Like,

1492. how does that make any sense?

  1493. And,

1494. and if you think about it

  1495. for a second,

  1496. like,

1497. the idea that when you die

1498. and you just sort of

  1499. join everything,

  1500. how is that different

  1501. from just understanding

  1502. that when you're dead,

  1503. you're dead?

  1504. And,

  1505. and if you understand

  1506. that death is just

  1507. ultimately being like

  1508. a drop of water

  1509. going into the ocean,

  1510. how is that different

  1511. than just dying

  1512. and not having any

  1513. identity anymore?

  1514. Like,

  1515. how is it,

  1516. like,

1517. the thing about this story,

  1518. and you see,

  1519. this is,

1520. and so it's very easy

  1521. when you have

  1522. understandings of,

  1523. first of all,

  1524. that you're in denial

  1525. that life comes out

  1526. of barrenness

  1527. and you somehow

  1528. believe that

  1529. and you're in denial

  1530. about the fact

  1531. that you believe it

1532. and at the same time

  1533. that you,

  1534. you sort of believe

  1535. that there's some type

  1536. of a spiritual type

  1537. of thing that comes

  1538. to you

  1539. and,

  1540. and it makes it

  1541. very,

  1542. very easily

  1543. for you to think

  1544. that right and wrong

  1545. is,

  1546. and,

  1547. and how you live

  1548. your life

  1549. is sort of really

  1550. something more abstract

  1551. and more emotional

  1552. and just sort of

  1553. more spiritual

  1554. and not very earthy

  1555. and not,

  1556. not as,

  1557. as concrete as we

  1558. many,

  1559. many times know

1560. and want it to be

  1561. because dang it all,

  1562. if I buy a dozen donuts

  1563. at Tim Hortons,

  1564. there needs to be

  1565. twelve in the box.

  1566. Nine doesn't cut it.

  1567. I don't accept

  1568. three spiritual ones.

  1569. I want twelve

  1570. that I can eat,

  1571. not nine and three

  1572. that I can pretend

  1573. that I ate.

  1574. I want all twelve.

  1575. And so here,

  1576. you see,

  1577. it's all part of

  1578. what's going on

  1579. here in the Bible.

  1580. What is it saying?

1581. God is going to make

  1582. a covenant

  1583. and out of Abraham

  1584. is going to come,

1585. there's going to be land

1586. and there's going to be

  1587. babies

1588. and there's going to be

  1589. nations

1590. and what does that mean?

  1591. It means there's going

  1592. to be laws.

  1593. There's going to be

  1594. that you drive

  1595. on the right-hand side

  1596. of the road,

  1597. not the left-hand side

  1598. of the road.

1599. It means that you stop

  1600. at stop signs.

  1601. It means that there's

  1602. customs in families.

  1603. It means that there's

  1604. traditions

  1605. because it's real.

  1606. It's real life.

  1607. And so the Bible

  1608. is not calling you

  1609. into an imaginary life,

  1610. an emotional life,

  1611. a spiritual life.

  1612. It's talking into

  1613. a real life

  1614. where there's human beings

  1615. and there's land

  1616. and there's customs

  1617. and there's communities

  1618. and there's families

  1619. and there's obligations

  1620. of a husband

  1621. to a wife

  1622. and a wife

  1623. to her husband

  1624. and of parents

  1625. to the children

  1626. and children

  1627. to the parents

  1628. and neighbors

  1629. to each other

  1630. and neighbors

  1631. to the king

  1632. and king

  1633. to the people.

  1634. It's a real world

  1635. that the Bible

  1636. is calling you into

1637. and as part of that sign

  1638. of the real world,

  1639. the origin of life

  1640. is marked

  1641. as belonging to God

  1642. in a real,

  1643. indelible,

  1644. physical way

  1645. that you

  1646. can be reminded of

  1647. and hence circumcision.

  1648. And is it cruel?

  1649. There's two things here

  1650. about this text

  1651. which are so remarkable.

  1652. The first is

  1653. if you go back

1654. and you look at it

1655. and I'm sort of running

  1656. out of time

1657. so you just go look

  1658. at it yourself.

  1659. The rich

  1660. and the poor

1661. are part of the covenant community.

  1662. The foreigner,

  1663. the stranger,

  1664. the slave,

  1665. the owner,

  1666. all are part

  1667. of the community.

  1668. All are equal.

  1669. Ones who are not

  1670. physically descendant

  1671. of Abraham,

  1672. they are part

  1673. of the covenant community.

  1674. It is truly

  1675. for all

  1676. without respect

  1677. of person.

  1678. Bill Gates

  1679. and a street person

  1680. both have to enter

  1681. the kingdom of God

  1682. the same way.

  1683. And Bill Gates

  1684. can be outside

  1685. the kingdom

  1686. and the street person

  1687. in.

  1688. Both have to

  1689. humble themselves

  1690. and in our case

  1691. of the new covenant

  1692. accept what Christ

  1693. has done for them.

  1694. It's profoundly

  1695. equal.

  1696. And the wonderful thing

  1697. as well about this

  1698. is the fact

  1699. that it's babies.

  1700. See this is,

  1701. I was thinking

  1702. about afterwards,

  1703. I'd have a bit

  1704. of a time afterwards

1705. to try how this text

  1706. helps us to understand

  1707. why biblical,

  1708. many people

  1709. who are very,

  1710. very biblical

  1711. and don't believe

  1712. in magical things

  1713. like baptismal regeneration

  1714. understand the significance

  1715. of infant baptism.

1716. See the fact of the matter

  1717. is,

  1718. is that when they're

  1719. having an eight day

  1720. old baby

  1721. enter the covenant

  1722. community,

  1723. nobody can say

  1724. it's only brave people

  1725. who become part

  1726. of the community.

  1727. It's only holy people

  1728. who become part

  1729. of the community.

  1730. It's only people

  1731. with high IQs

  1732. who can be part

  1733. of the community.

  1734. It's only rich people.

  1735. It's only a person

  1736. of a certain race.

  1737. It's only a person

  1738. of a certain accomplishment

1739. that you need to do

  1740. some types of things

  1741. and because you do

  1742. some types of things

  1743. then you deserve

  1744. to be in it.

  1745. People with all

  1746. of the right connection,

  1747. no!

1748. By having an eight day

  1749. old baby

  1750. part of the covenant

  1751. community,

  1752. you realize that it's

  1753. only and completely

  1754. and utterly

  1755. because of God's grace.

  1756. they have earned

  1757. nothing,

  1758. they've accomplished

  1759. nothing

  1760. and God welcomes

  1761. them into the covenant

  1762. community.

1763. My time has to come

  1764. to an end.

  1765. All of this

  1766. paints a bit

  1767. of a riddle

  1768. that only Christ

  1769. is able to satisfy

1770. and bring to a completion.

  1771. You see,

  1772. we Christians

  1773. believe that when

1774. Jesus died upon the cross

1775. and rose from the dead,

  1776. there's a new covenant

  1777. which is offered

  1778. to human beings.

  1779. But the very,

  1780. very same principles

  1781. come.

  1782. I can't make

  1783. a new spiritual life

  1784. myself.

1785. That has to be a gift

  1786. that comes from God

  1787. to give me this

  1788. new spiritual life.

  1789. And the fact

  1790. of the matter is

  1791. is that Abraham

  1792. wasn't able to keep

  1793. perfectly the covenant.

  1794. He didn't walk

  1795. perfectly before God

  1796. and he wasn't

  1797. perfectly blameless.

  1798. And how is that

1799. going to be dealt with?

1800. And even if you go,

  1801. this is all part

  1802. of the first book

  1803. of a five-book series

  1804. and the next books

  1805. in the series

  1806. make very clear

1807. that there has to be

1808. some type of a means

  1809. by which justice

  1810. is dealt with

  1811. and the covenant

  1812. relationship can be

  1813. secured,

1814. but at the end of the day

  1815. it's going to involve

  1816. the death

  1817. and the sacrifice

  1818. of animals,

  1819. but all that is

  1820. is it's just,

  1821. you know,

  1822. an ending type

  1823. of sacrifice

  1824. and an ending type

  1825. of examination

  1826. of the context

  1827. of your conscience

  1828. and it's never

  1829. something which is

  1830. so completely

  1831. and utterly secure.

1832. And all of this text

  1833. is pointing,

  1834. how can God

  1835. justly deal with

  1836. the fact that we

  1837. keep breaking the covenant?

1838. How is it that we

  1839. can't perfectly keep

  1840. the covenant

1841. and God will accept it?

  1842. How does this work?

  1843. And the Bible

  1844. keeps pointing and pointing

  1845. for us to understand

  1846. this profound insight

  1847. that we can't.

  1848. And that's why

  1849. we need Jesus.

  1850. You see,

  1851. later on

1852. in the book of Exodus,

  1853. the book of Leviticus,

  1854. the book of Numbers,

1855. and the book of Deuteronomy,

1856. he's going to make very clear

1857. that there has to be

  1858. something like a sacrifice

1859. to make us right with God.

1860. It has to be something

  1861. from outside of us.

  1862. And if this covenant

1863. is to be as secure

  1864. and eternal

  1865. and go beyond life

  1866. and death

1867. and into the new heaven

  1868. and the new earth,

  1869. because the biblical view

  1870. of what happens

1871. at the end of the end

1872. of the end of the end

  1873. is that we inhabit

  1874. redeemed bodies

  1875. in a redeemed

  1876. and restored creation

  1877. for all eternity.

  1878. Real people

  1879. in real bodies

  1880. in a real world

  1881. with a real God.

  1882. And when we understand

  1883. that we'll be

  1884. real people

  1885. in real bodies

  1886. in a real world

  1887. with a real community

  1888. with a real God,

  1889. God,

  1890. it doesn't mean

  1891. that that makes

  1892. this world

  1893. less valuable,

1894. it makes it more valuable.

  1895. And the story

  1896. is going to continue

  1897. to show

  1898. in the illustration

  1899. of the sacrifices

  1900. that you have this,

  1901. in a sense,

  1902. blameless animal.

  1903. And the animal

1904. is going to be sacrificed.

  1905. You put your hand

  1906. on the animal

  1907. and there's a double

  1908. type of exchange

  1909. that happens there.

  1910. In a sense,

  1911. the sinlessness

  1912. or blamelessness

  1913. of the animal

  1914. is, in a sense,

  1915. put upon you,

  1916. clothed upon you,

  1917. and the wrong

  1918. that you've done

  1919. to break your relationship

  1920. with God

1921. is put on the animal.

  1922. And the animal

  1923. dies in your place,

  1924. but before the animal

  1925. dies in your place,

  1926. its innocence,

  1927. in a sense,

  1928. is placed on you.

1929. There's only going to be

  1930. one offspring

  1931. of Abraham

  1932. that perfectly lives

  1933. the covenant

  1934. and that's Jesus.

  1935. And when we see

  1936. Jesus dying

  1937. upon the cross

  1938. and when we put

  1939. our faith and trust

  1940. in him

  1941. and his resurrection power,

  1942. we're not only acknowledging

  1943. that only God

  1944. can give us

  1945. that spiritual life

  1946. that will outlast death.

  1947. Only God

  1948. can give us that.

  1949. And when we put

  1950. our hand upon

  1951. into Christ,

  1952. there's this

  1953. exchange that happens

  1954. and it's not just

  1955. with an animal

  1956. that can't really

  1957. fully represent

  1958. us as human beings

  1959. and can sort of

  1960. deal with

  1961. what we've done

  1962. up until now

  1963. but can't deal

  1964. with what we've done

  1965. in the future.

  1966. But when we see

  1967. God,

  1968. the Son of God,

  1969. who's the only one

  1970. who has perfectly

  1971. kept the covenant

  1972. that God made

  1973. with Abram,

  1974. the only one

  1975. of Abram's seed

  1976. that perfectly

  1977. keeps the covenant,

  1978. that when we put

  1979. our hands

1980. in the hand of Christ,

  1981. whether you are

  1982. rich or poor,

  1983. whether you are

1984. high IQ or low IQ,

  1985. whether you come

  1986. from Rwanda

  1987. or Sudan

  1988. or Ireland

  1989. or Canada

  1990. or China

  1991. or Indonesia,

  1992. whether you,

  1993. when you put

  1994. your hand

  1995. in the hands

  1996. of Christ

  1997. who is God,

  1998. the Son of God,

  1999. the only one

  2000. who has walked

  2001. perfectly in this covenant,

  2002. that what is happening

  2003. is that his

  2004. perfect keeping

  2005. of the covenant

  2006. is bestowed upon you.

  2007. And the wrong

  2008. you've done

  2009. to damage the covenant

  2010. is put upon him.

  2011. And this also happens

  2012. in the real world,

  2013. in real time,

  2014. in real history.

2015. But because of who he is,

  2016. in a sense,

2017. it happens in the heavens

  2018. and therefore

  2019. is available

  2020. for those before him

  2021. and after him

  2022. to every human being.

  2023. And so this picture

  2024. of the covenant

  2025. is pointing

  2026. to the greater covenant

  2027. that it was still

  2028. to come.

  2029. And every time

  2030. we celebrate

  2031. the Lord's Supper,

  2032. we renew

  2033. the covenant.

  2034. We remember

  2035. how it is

  2036. that we become

  2037. Christ's

  2038. and become part

  2039. of Christ's

  2040. covenant community.

  2041. That we reaffirm

  2042. that we need

  2043. to receive him

  2044. and feed on him

  2045. spiritually.

  2046. We need to receive

  2047. his benefits

  2048. and that we are

  2049. to walk with him.

  2050. We come confessing

  2051. our sins,

  2052. acknowledging

  2053. the different ways

  2054. this week,

  2055. acknowledging

  2056. that the ways

  2057. we've done wrong

  2058. this week,

  2059. acknowledging

  2060. that the only way

  2061. we can stand

  2062. before him

  2063. is because of

  2064. his finished work

  2065. upon the cross.

  2066. And we remember

  2067. once again

  2068. his death,

  2069. we remember

  2070. his resurrection,

  2071. we remember

  2072. his coming again,

  2073. we remember

  2074. that there will

  2075. one day be

  2076. the new heaven

  2077. and the new earth

  2078. and once again

  2079. we recommit

  2080. and we say

  2081. thank you Jesus

  2082. and we recommit

  2083. to walk as his.

  2084. Let's stand.

  2085. Bow our heads

  2086. in prayer.

  2087. Father,

  2088. we thank you

  2089. for the gift

  2090. of Jesus.

  2091. We thank you

  2092. for the gift

  2093. of new life

  2094. that comes in him.

  2095. We thank you,

  2096. Father,

  2097. that your desire

  2098. for us

  2099. is that one day

  2100. we who walk

  2101. with you

  2102. by faith

  2103. but not by sight,

  2104. that one day

  2105. the day will come

  2106. when we see you

  2107. face to face

2108. as you always see us

  2109. in our face.

  2110. That we will have

  2111. renewed bodies,

  2112. restored bodies,

  2113. resurrection bodies

  2114. in a restored

  2115. and recreated world,

  2116. in a community

  2117. under your headship

  2118. and your kingship.

  2119. We will walk

  2120. on this earth,

  2121. the new earth.

  2122. We will go

  2123. to distant stars

  2124. and different planets.

  2125. The whole

  2126. unending universe

  2127. will be ours

  2128. while our home

  2129. will always be

  2130. on this earth.

  2131. We will always be

  2132. under your kingly

  2133. and loving authority.

  2134. And, Father,

  2135. we ask that you

  2136. help us to understand

  2137. as your children

  2138. and people

  2139. at a deeper level

  2140. what Christ

  2141. has done for us

  2142. to give us

  2143. this new life

  2144. that can only

  2145. come from you

  2146. and that knowing

  2147. what our destiny is

  2148. that we will

  2149. love this earth.

  2150. We will love

  2151. our neighbors.

  2152. We will love

  2153. our nation.

  2154. We will love

  2155. all of this creation.

  2156. We will care

  2157. for it

  2158. knowing that

  2159. you love it

  2160. and will restore

  2161. all things.

  2162. And we ask

  2163. these things

2164. in the name of Jesus,

  2165. your Son

  2166. and our Savior.

  2167. Amen.

  2168. Amen.
