  1. Today's reading is from Ephesians chapter 4 verse 17 to chapter 5 verse 2.

    Ephesians 4:17

  2. Starting in verse 17 we read, the new life.

  3. Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do,

  4. in the frutility of their minds.

  5. They are darkened in the understanding, alienated from the life of God,

  6. because of the ignorance that is in them.

  7. Due to their hardness of heart, they have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality,

  8. greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

  9. But this is not the way you learned Christ, assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him,

  10. as the truth is in Jesus.

  11. To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life,

  12. and is corrupt through deceitful desires.

  13. But to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

  14. and to put on your new self,

  15. created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

  16. Therefore, having put away falsehood,

  17. let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor,

  18. for we are members one of another.

  19. Be angry and do not sin.

  20. Do not let the sun go down on your anger,

  21. and give no opportunity to the devil.

  22. Let the thief no longer steal,

  23. but rather let him labor,

  24. doing honest work with his own hands,

  25. so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

  26. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths,

  27. but only such as is good for building up,

  28. as fits the occasion,

  29. that he may give grace to those who hear,

  30. and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,

  31. by whom you are sealed for the day of redemption.

  32. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander

  33. be put away from you,

  34. along with all malice.

  35. Be kind to one another,

  36. tenderhearted,

  37. forgiving one another,

  38. as God in Christ forgave you.

  39. Therefore,

  40. be imitatis of God,

  41. as beloved children,

  42. and walk in love,

  43. as Christ loved us,

  44. and gave himself up for us,

  45. a frequent offering and sacrifice to God.

  46. This is the word of God.

  47. All right.

  48. Thank you, Margo,

  49. for that warm introduction,

  50. and thank you, Kevin,

  51. for that introduction.

  52. So, again,

  53. my name is Margo.

  54. I'm part of Oasis CG.

  55. I'm also working with Young Life right now,

  56. and part of my identity is also as a Hong Konger,

  57. and I don't know if you know Hong Kongers,

  58. what do we love to drink?

  59. Ice lemon tea.

  60. And, of course,

  61. you know,

  62. being health conscious as I am,

  63. I always ask for less ice and less sugar,

  64. right?

  65. And, you know,

  66. growing up,

  67. that's like my favorite drink,

  68. right?

  69. Ice lemon tea.

  70. And I really,

  71. really wanted to have an ice cream,

  72. which was just like ice lemon tea.

  73. And so one day,

  74. when I was a small child,

  75. I remember I was walking with my parents in Beijing,

  76. we're traveling,

  77. and I walk across the store,

  78. and then this store was selling like ice cream,

  79. I think,

  80. and then it said lime sherbet.

  81. And I was like lime equals lemon,

  82. okay?

  83. Sherbet,

  84. kind of like ice cream,

  85. I guess.

  86. And so I was like spending 10 minutes just like begging my parents,

  87. like,

  88. please,

  89. please,

  90. I really,

  91. really want this lime sherbet.

  92. Like,

  93. please,

  94. mom,

  95. like,

  96. please,

  97. dad.

  98. And my parents were like,

  99. ah,

  100. like,

  101. I don't think so.

  102. Like,

  103. hey,

  104. you know,

  105. we're in a hurry.

  106. But then like after,

  107. you know,

  108. a huge tantrum,

  109. they're like,

  110. okay,

  111. okay,

  112. here's your lime sherbet.

  113. Okay,

  114. like,

  115. be happy.

  116. And I was like the happiest kid in the world.

  117. And when I put that lime sherbet in my mouth,

  118. I realized it tasted nothing like ice lemon tea.

  119. It was like a sour bomb had went off in my mouth.

  120. And I realized I was like,

  121. I was crying.

  122. I was like,

  123. oh my gosh,

  124. this is so bad.

  125. And my parents,

  126. you know,

  127. being good parents,

  128. they're like,

  129. no,

  130. you must finish your lime sherbet.

  131. Right?

  132. And so I was probably like the saddest looking kid in the world,

  133. like eating lime sherbet out in the street.

  134. And people were probably like really confused.

  135. And the thing is like,

  136. and the reason I tell this story is because,

  137. I think sometimes we have this expectation of like what it is.

  138. Right?

  139. But in versus the reality of this.

  140. And I think often Paul paints in Ephesians and then kind of the passage we're just reading,

  141. how the church is such a beautiful church.

  142. You know,

  143. people are changing.

  144. People are transforming.

  145. People are growing.

  146. You know,

  147. people are no longer stealing,

  148. but are now like generous to one another,

  149. like all these amazing things.

  150. And you know,

  151. sometimes,

  152. sometimes we do feel like that.

  153. Right?

  154. We feel like,

  155. man,

  156. we're growing.

  157. You know,

  158. I feel like,

  159. you know,

  160. some people in my CG was just saying recently,

  161. like they feel like,

  162. wow,

  163. they've like really been changing in the past few months.

  164. And wow,

  165. that's amazing.

  166. That's great to hear.

  167. But sometimes it's also,

  168. it feels like,

  169. you know,

  170. church doesn't necessarily meet the expectation of what that is.

  171. It isn't always perfect.

  172. You might feel like,

  173. oh,

  174. I remember sometimes,

  175. you know,

  176. you speak truth and love.

  177. It completely backfires.

  178. Right?

  179. You feel like,

  180. man,

  181. the church could be doing so much more.

  182. Like you're really passionate about evangelism,

  183. about serving young people,

  184. but you know,

  185. other people aren't there yet.

  186. And maybe you feel like,

  187. wow,

  188. church is great.

  189. You know,

  190. I know a lot of people,

  191. but I feel like,

  192. you know,

  193. it's not,

  194. I don't feel like I'm like,

  195. can be super vulnerable around these people.

  196. And even for myself,

  197. I remember when I was leading CG,

  198. where this one session,

  199. I was like,

  200. it was just me and this other guy.

  201. And I was like,

  202. dang,

  203. like maybe we need to close down our CG.

  204. Right?

  205. And it's like,

  206. sometimes it's hard.

  207. And I think here in Ephesians,

  208. Paul talks about,

  209. you know,

  210. this cosmic plan of Christ,

  211. adoption to the gospel,

  212. all these really great things.

  213. And then there's this perfect,

  214. loving community church.

  215. But then there seems to be somewhere,

  216. there's like a gap in between.

  217. Right?

  218. And that's where we're going to go today.

  219. And here,

  220. Paul tells us in today's passage,

  221. that we can only have this loving church.

  222. We can only love others

  223. by the daily renewal

  224. of our identity

  225. as God's new creation.

  226. Okay,

  227. let me repeat this.

  228. So Paul tells us

  229. that we can really only love each other

  230. through the daily renewal

  231. of our identity

  232. as God's creation.

  233. And he starts off

  234. with our hardened hearts.

  235. Right?

  236. In verse 17,

  237. 18,

  238. he paints this picture

  239. of our old life.

  240. What were we like before?

  241. You know,

  242. our old minds,

  243. our old hearts.

  244. And the key idea

  245. in verse 18

  246. is that,

  247. you know,

  248. our hearts,

  249. all these issues

  250. from our life

  251. actually came down

  252. from our hardened hearts.

  253. And that basically just means

  254. like our hearts

  255. were like stone

  256. and it progressively hardens

  257. and, you know,

  258. no matter what other people say,

  259. like we're just not going

  260. to listen to them.

  261. And it progressively develops.

  262. Right?

  263. So this hardened heart,

  264. you know,

  265. leads to us being ignorant

  266. of how we can live life,

  267. ignorant of how we can love others well.

  268. And it leads to being alienated

  269. from God

  270. and also ends up

  271. us being stuck

  272. in these loops of sin,

  273. these patterns of sin

  274. that we feel like

  275. we can't get out of.

  276. I remember when I was

  277. a teenager,

  278. actually,

  279. I feel like I was always

  280. stuck in these patterns of sin.

  281. Right?

  282. I remember

  283. myself,

  284. I was a super prideful kid,

  285. you know,

  286. always trying to seek

  287. external validation,

  288. you know,

  289. trying to get the highest grade,

  290. trying to compare myself

  291. with other people.

  292. My heart

  293. was just so hard.

  294. I was just captured

  295. by this idea that,

  296. man,

  297. I needed to achieve

  298. a lot of things

  299. so that I would have value.

  300. And I remember

  301. I was just being a huge jerk

  302. and this heart,

  303. you know,

  304. led to me just behaving

  305. like really poorly

  306. and just like treating

  307. my friends really poorly.

  308. I remember belittling them,

  309. belittling them,

  310. you know,

  311. trash talking,

  312. you know,

  313. as all good

  314. like teenage boys do.

  315. And yeah,

  316. I remember,

  317. you know,

  318. in my cringiest moment

  319. where I was in math class

  320. and we're just like

  321. trash talking to each other

  322. and I remember

  323. I was like,

  324. okay,

  325. it sounds better

  326. in Chinese,

  327. trust me,

  328. but I was like,

  329. you know,

  330. who is the idiot

  331. and who is the genius?

  332. And I was telling a friend

  333. and I was like,

  334. the class was like silent

  335. and I was like,

  336. for a split moment,

  337. I was like,

  338. yeah,

  339. I got him.

  340. And then I realized

  341. that actually I was

  342. the biggest idiot

  343. in the room,

  344. right?

  345. And so,

  346. it was like all these things

  347. that I was like

  348. treating my friends

  349. really poorly.

  350. I was stuck in this loop

  351. and I felt the consequences.

  352. You know,

  353. I didn't feel

  354. like I was any better.

  355. I constantly felt stressed

  356. and it was like,

  357. no matter what I did,

  358. I couldn't get out

  359. of this loop.

  360. I couldn't,

  361. through my own new insights,

  362. get out of these behaviors

  363. and whenever someone told me,

  364. like,

  365. hey,

  366. you know,

  367. when I went to church sometimes,

  368. like,

  369. people were like,

  370. oh,

  371. you know,

  372. love your friends,

  373. okay,

  374. like,

  375. okay,

  376. and then I would find ways

  377. to change my behavior

  378. a little bit

  379. but it feels like

  380. I'm still stuck,

  381. right?

  382. I would,

  383. like,

  384. find other ways

  385. to,

  386. like,

  387. trash talk my friends

  388. and,

  389. yeah,

  390. you know,

  391. even now,

  392. like,

  393. God's redeemed my heart

  394. and it's great

  395. but sometimes these old patterns

  396. of sin still exist,

  397. right?

  398. And it's not just like,

  399. and Paul doesn't talk about,

  400. oh,

  401. just one or two sins,

  402. it's all our sins,

  403. right?

  404. And maybe for you,

  405. it's status,

  406. right?

  407. Security.

  408. Maybe it's prestige,

  409. you know,

  410. finding approval

  411. from others,

  412. like,

  413. there's these things

  414. that kind of hook

  415. into our hearts

  416. and we feel like,

  417. man,

  418. sometimes we're just stuck

  419. in these loops

  420. and that's why I think

  421. Paul reminds us,

  422. right,

  423. as Corinthians,

  424. that actually we can't

  425. lift ourselves up,

  426. you know,

  427. we as flawed people,

  428. we can't use our own knowledge,

  429. our own strength

  430. to lift ourselves up.

  431. Actually,

  432. what we need

  433. is a new heart,

  434. right?

  435. Like,

  436. with our,

  437. I don't know if you guys

  438. ever experienced this

  439. but,

  440. you know,

  441. when I was a teenager,

  442. my mom was always like,

  443. oh,

  444. you know,

  445. clean your bed,

  446. pack your room

  447. and I was like,

  448. yeah,

  449. yeah,

  450. yeah,

  451. okay,

  452. mom,

  453. okay,

  454. mom,

  455. but it would just go

  456. from one year

  457. to out of the other year

  458. or like,

  459. I mean,

  460. unpopular colleague

  461. said something

  462. or unpopular boss

  463. said something,

  464. you're like,

  465. yeah,

  466. yeah,

  467. yeah,

  468. okay,

  469. but then it kind of

  470. just like goes

  471. from one year

  472. out of the other year,

  473. right?

  474. Like,

  475. our hearts

  476. are so hardened

  477. that,

  478. you know,

  479. even though like

  480. people give us

  481. new advice,

  482. new ideas,

  483. it's like hard for us

  484. and even if you look

  485. at humanity,

  486. like,

  487. I used to work

  488. for a humanitarian

  489. organization

  490. and I think

  491. as a collective,

  492. like,

  493. we've come so far,

  494. you know,

  495. we've had so much progress

  496. but if you just look

  497. at the news today,

  498. racism,

  499. war,

  500. suffering,

  501. it seems like

  502. we're stuck in these

  503. like old patterns,

  504. right?

  505. Like,

  506. no matter how hard

  507. we try,

  508. we can't get out

  509. and I'm all for,

  510. you know,

  511. podcasts,

  512. you know,

  513. I'm the podcast person

  514. or like self-help books,

  515. I love those,

  516. you know,

  517. don't get me wrong,

  518. go for it,

  519. read it,

  520. but those aren't

  521. going to dramatically

  522. change our hearts,

  523. change our lives

  524. and what we need,

  525. Paul,

  526. thankfully,

  527. you know,

  528. doesn't just leave us here

  529. like,

  530. oh,

  531. okay,

  532. good luck,

  533. you know,

  534. he uses the word

  535. but,

  536. which is,

  537. you know,

  538. one of Paul's

  539. favorite words

  540. and he tells us

  541. in the next section

  542. that actually what we need

  543. is this constant renewal

  544. in our new identity

  545. and verse 20,

  546. it talks about how,

  547. hey,

  548. our minds are no longer,

  549. you know,

  550. the old minds

  551. no longer darkened,

  552. we've now learned

  553. Christ,

  554. I want to pause here

  555. for a moment,

  556. what does it mean by,

  557. oh,

  558. we're just learned Christ,

  559. you know,

  560. it's actually not about

  561. just,

  562. obviously,

  563. it's great,

  564. the teaching of Jesus

  565. is great,

  566. knowledge,

  567. new knowledge

  568. that Jesus gives us,

  569. amazing,

  570. but the key thing

  571. is actually our goal

  572. as Christians,

  573. as apprentices to Jesus,

  574. is to become like Jesus,

  575. our goal is not

  576. to have new knowledge

  577. and that helps

  578. with how we live our life,

  579. our goal is to become

  580. like Jesus

  581. and in verses 22,

  582. he talks about how

  583. we put on our old self,

  584. you know,

  585. our self that was corrupting,

  586. that was degenerating

  587. and this is a beautiful image

  588. and he said,

  589. we said yes to Jesus already,

  590. we put on this new self

  591. and so even for those

  592. who haven't said yes to Jesus,

  593. that's totally okay,

  594. you know,

  595. he's inviting you every day

  596. and so this is a process

  597. that's already happened,

  598. right,

  599. putting off the old self,

  600. putting on the new self

  601. but why does Paul remind us

  602. even though it's already happened,

  603. right,

  604. and it's because we often forget

  605. and we need this daily renewal,

  606. it's like a person,

  607. you know,

  608. needing to have food

  609. every single day

  610. or a plant needing nutrients,

  611. we need renewal

  612. as verse 23 talks about,

  613. our mind needs constant renewal

  614. and while we cannot earn it,

  615. we cannot earn our faith,

  616. we cannot earn our salvation,

  617. daily renewal requires effort,

  618. okay,

  619. let me repeat this,

  620. so our faith,

  621. our walk with Jesus,

  622. while it cannot be earned,

  623. requires effort in our walk,

  624. now I don't become

  625. a better apprentice to Jesus,

  626. I don't become a better Christian

  627. just from sitting on Sunday service

  628. and just like passively absorbing

  629. what the preacher is saying,

  630. we need to work in our faith,

  631. right,

  632. and a lot of it actually is about,

  633. you know,

  634. what the Bible calls like

  635. spiritual disciplines

  636. or what we can call today

  637. as like daily habits,

  638. right,

  639. habits like God's word,

  640. listening to God's word,

  641. prayer,

  642. you know,

  643. solitude,

  644. silence,

  645. all these good things

  646. or even like engaging

  647. in a community

  648. that challenges you

  649. but still loves you,

  650. right,

  651. there's all these like

  652. great habits,

  653. things that we can renew ourselves

  654. in God every day

  655. and if that sounds hard,

  656. it's because it is,

  657. right,

  658. 21st century,

  659. we are in this hyper-connected society

  660. where we always need to be

  661. on top of the news,

  662. we're always checking up

  663. on what's our favorite sports team doing,

  664. how,

  665. yeah,

  666. maybe checking our emails

  667. quite a lot

  668. and we feel like,

  669. you know,

  670. we're constantly needing

  671. to be on top of things

  672. and so I want to present you

  673. kind of two scenarios.

  674. First scenario is,

  675. I don't know what you do

  676. when you wake up in the morning

  677. but I think for most of us,

  678. we,

  679. you know,

  680. check our phones,

  681. right,

  682. whether that's in the bathroom

  683. or like somewhere else.

  684. You're just doing your daily routine

  685. and you're like,

  686. you know,

  687. checking your emails,

  688. going social media

  689. or like reading the news

  690. and there's always something

  691. that maybe annoys you

  692. or like triggers you

  693. or like just gives you anxiety

  694. like,

  695. wow,

  696. this world is like

  697. not a great place,

  698. right,

  699. and versus scenario two

  700. where,

  701. you know,

  702. you're still doing

  703. your morning routine

  704. but you're just spending

  705. 10 minutes,

  706. 10 minutes

  707. just reading the word of God

  708. and sometimes,

  709. you know,

  710. it doesn't penetrate

  711. super deeply

  712. but that's okay,

  713. right,

  714. you're reading about

  715. God's steadfast love

  716. and just like reminding yourself

  717. like,

  718. okay,

  719. yeah,

  720. I'm a child of God

  721. and you have this small

  722. sense of peace

  723. and then you get out

  724. the door,

  725. you know,

  726. in these two scenarios,

  727. you both get out the door,

  728. you run to the MTR,

  729. right,

  730. because we're always

  731. in a hurry in Hong Kong

  732. and you come across

  733. your first battle of the day,

  734. a slow walker,

  735. right,

  736. and you're like,

  737. okay,

  738. okay,

  739. if you think about it,

  740. in which of these two scenarios

  741. are you going to have

  742. the most patience

  743. with the slow walker,

  744. right,

  745. and I'm always guilty of it,

  746. right,

  747. I'm always like,

  748. oh,

  749. trying to just like

  750. get across them really quickly,

  751. like,

  752. why can't you walk faster,

  753. right,

  754. and it's like,

  755. wow,

  756. actually,

  757. what I realized is,

  758. and what Paul is saying

  759. is that behavior change

  760. comes from a heart

  761. and our mind transformation,

  762. right,

  763. and actually,

  764. the battle is already lost

  765. how you started the day,

  766. you know,

  767. the battle isn't

  768. in that MTR slow walker

  769. or in that office space

  770. where you have this

  771. really annoying colleague

  772. that,

  773. you know,

  774. that constantly talks,

  775. it's actually won

  776. or lost in the morning,

  777. right,

  778. how are we spending our time

  779. feeding our minds

  780. and feeding our hearts?

  781. We have a choice,

  782. actually,

  783. we're not just passive people,

  784. you know,

  785. mindlessly absorbing

  786. social media,

  787. mindlessly absorbing technology

  788. where we can choose

  789. what we can feed

  790. in our hearts

  791. and our minds

  792. and we need this

  793. constant renewal,

  794. reminding of this new identity

  795. in God's creation

  796. and as a psychology major,

  797. I love looking at just research,

  798. reading books

  799. and actually research

  800. has also shown that,

  801. you know,

  802. behavior change

  803. comes from change

  804. in our identity,

  805. right,

  806. and that's why every day

  807. we actually need

  808. the daily renewal

  809. of our new identity.

  810. Who are we really?

  811. Am I just a office worker?

  812. Am I just a younger brother?

  813. I'm actually a new creation

  814. as well,

  815. right,

  816. and it's hard

  817. because,

  818. you know,

  819. I think Paul used the idea

  820. of like new clothes

  821. and old clothes.

  822. You know,

  823. even though our new clothes

  824. fit really well,

  825. you know,

  826. are probably more practical,

  827. aren't as worn,

  828. don't have holes,

  829. there's something more comfortable

  830. about wearing these

  831. like old clothes.

  832. Like I have this camp t-shirt

  833. from like 10 years ago

  834. that I just keep wearing

  835. from my pajamas.

  836. Like,

  837. I should probably throw that out.

  838. It's probably not very,

  839. not very great.

  840. But it's like,

  841. yeah,

  842. there's something about

  843. these old clothes

  844. that we feel more comfortable in.

  845. And that's why

  846. Paul constantly

  847. asks us to renew ourselves

  848. so that we don't forget.

  849. And moving on,

  850. Paul,

  851. you know,

  852. in the next verse,

  853. right,

  854. he uses the word therefore.

  855. You know,

  856. another of Paul's favorite words,

  857. therefore.

  858. And what does he do here

  859. when he talks about,

  860. you know,

  861. the next section,

  862. how do we love each other well?

  863. He connects actually

  864. the vertical dimension,

  865. like our relationship with God

  866. with the horizontal,

  867. which is how we love each other well.

  868. And he wants us to,

  869. he wants to point out

  870. kind of the insight,

  871. which is,

  872. actually for a lot of us,

  873. how we love each other well

  874. depends on how our relationship

  875. is secure in God.

  876. Are we being renewed

  877. in his identity every day?

  878. Right?

  879. We can't force ourselves

  880. to change our behavior

  881. through willpower alone.

  882. It might work for a while,

  883. but it won't last.

  884. Right?

  885. He's telling us that,

  886. wow,

  887. we need to renew ourselves

  888. in God every day

  889. so that we can love each other.

  890. And how do we love each other?

  891. Well,

  892. we model ourselves

  893. after Christ.

  894. And I think the really cool thing

  895. is here Paul talks about

  896. it's no longer just,

  897. you know,

  898. avoiding sin.

  899. And,

  900. you know,

  901. sometimes we're like,

  902. I don't know if you heard,

  903. like,

  904. oh,

  905. you know,

  906. rules of life.

  907. It's like,

  908. okay,

  909. just don't be a jerk.

  910. Don't be,

  911. don't be a bad person,

  912. right?

  913. That's how you should live life.

  914. Like,

  915. okay,

  916. you can do anything else,

  917. but just don't be a jerk.

  918. Right?

  919. Actually,

  920. Paul doesn't say that.

  921. He says,

  922. actually,

  923. you know,

  924. we have to no longer sin

  925. and love each other.

  926. Right?

  927. In verse 24,

  928. 25,

  929. sorry,

  930. he says,

  931. you know,

  932. we no longer lie,

  933. but speak the truth.

  934. We no longer steal,

  935. but we're being generous

  936. with each other.

  937. 29,

  938. no longer gossip,

  939. but say words

  940. that really encourage each other.

  941. No,

  942. 31,

  943. no longer be bitter,

  944. replace it with tender heartedness

  945. and forgiveness.

  946. And so the idea is,

  947. we're just no,

  948. we're not just no longer sinning.

  949. We're trying to love each other.

  950. And actually,

  951. Paul has this really great insight

  952. into our behavior.

  953. See,

  954. we,

  955. the tricky thing is,

  956. we can't replace

  957. our sinful behavior

  958. with nothing.

  959. It's like,

  960. for example,

  961. I don't know,

  962. sometimes I tell myself,

  963. like,

  964. okay,

  965. Marco,

  966. like,

  967. today,

  968. you need to stop using your phone so much.

  969. You've been on your phone too much.

  970. So I keep telling myself that.

  971. And I'm like,

  972. okay,

  973. no,

  974. but you stop to carry your phone around

  975. because it's,

  976. you need to communicate with other people.

  977. And so,

  978. you know,

  979. you go about your day,

  980. you're at a bank,

  981. you know,

  982. lining up to ATM

  983. or you're in a bathroom

  984. with nothing to do.

  985. And what do we do?

  986. We pull out our phones,

  987. right?

  988. Automatically.

  989. I'm like,

  990. on social media

  991. and I'm like,

  992. I catch myself.

  993. Five minutes later,

  994. I'm like,

  995. okay,

  996. what did I just do?

  997. And it's like,

  998. when we tell ourselves

  999. not to do something

1000. but don't replace it with something,

  1001. we automatically go back

  1002. to that old thing

  1003. that we're doing.

  1004. And so,

  1005. for us,

  1006. it's,

  1007. we can only substitute

  1008. a sinful behavior,

  1009. a sinful act

  1010. with a loving act.

1011. That's the only way it works.

1012. And what does that look like today?

  1013. Well,

  1014. for example,

  1015. I don't know about you guys,

1016. but during the fifth wave,

  1017. I was complaining quite a lot

  1018. about,

  1019. you know,

  1020. government policies,

  1021. COVID policies,

  1022. whatnot.

  1023. Instead of doing that,

1024. let's pray for the government,

  1025. right?

  1026. Instead of ghosting conflicts,

  1027. which is super easy

  1028. to do these days,

  1029. you know,

  1030. just don't respond

  1031. in a phone text.

  1032. Engage in conflict.

1033. Engage in a loving way.

  1034. Instead of feeling bitter

  1035. that other people

  1036. aren't where you are,

  1037. like,

  1038. man,

  1039. like,

  1040. church could be doing

  1041. so much more,

  1042. like,

  1043. man,

1044. we could be serving the poor,

  1045. we could be serving

  1046. these communities,

1047. we could be doing more.

  1048. Having that patience,

  1049. right?

  1050. Instead of doing that,

  1051. having that patience,

  1052. being inviting,

  1053. instead of being bitter.

  1054. And this is maybe,

1055. this is also a really tricky one.

1056. Because I think so often

1057. we want to present ourselves,

  1058. you know,

  1059. as spiritually good.

  1060. You know,

  1061. we're all,

  1062. like,

  1063. not that,

  1064. oh,

  1065. we're perfect,

  1066. but like,

  1067. oh,

  1068. you know,

  1069. we're kind of,

  1070. like,

  1071. put together,

  1072. right?

1073. Sometimes you go to church,

  1074. people ask,

  1075. like,

  1076. how are you doing?

  1077. You say,

  1078. good,

  1079. you know,

  1080. and that's kind of,

  1081. like,

  1082. how the conversation goes.

  1083. But it's like,

  1084. yeah,

  1085. it's super easy,

  1086. right?

  1087. Just to,

  1088. like,

  1089. have that facade

  1090. and just say,

  1091. okay,

  1092. you know,

  1093. things are going okay.

  1094. And you know what?

1095. Sometimes you are doing good.

  1096. That's totally cool.

1097. But I think a lot of times also,

  1098. and I think we're all

  1099. going to get there,

  1100. we're going to experience

1101. that one way or another.

  1102. It's like,

  1103. we're just spiritually dry.

  1104. Right?

  1105. We feel like,

  1106. oh,

  1107. okay,

  1108. I've been,

  1109. like,

  1110. pouring out,

1111. or work has been so hard,

1112. and I just feel like

  1113. disconnected from God.

  1114. I feel like,

  1115. okay,

  1116. I haven't been reading my Bible

  1117. for, like,

  1118. three weeks.

  1119. It's like,

  1120. yeah,

  1121. things are tough.

1122. And I think the temptation

  1123. is just to stay

  1124. at things are tough,

  1125. but also,

  1126. like,

  1127. okay,

1128. I'll deal with this alone,

  1129. right?

  1130. I think in Chinese,

  1131. we say,

  1132. oh,

1133. we don't want to bother

1134. other people with our problems.

  1135. But I think here,

1136. what Paul is also saying,

  1137. it's like,

  1138. hey,

1139. let's not lie to each other,

  1140. right?

1141. Let's actually just be honest.

  1142. Hey,

1143. where are we at right now?

1144. And the really cool thing is,

  1145. you know,

1146. Jesus didn't come for the healthy,

  1147. right?

1148. He came for the sick.

  1149. And the church isn't a place

  1150. actually full of

  1151. super healthy people.

  1152. The church is actually

  1153. a hospital of people

  1154. who are just working

  1155. out their faith.

  1156. Doesn't that,

  1157. like,

  1158. a beautiful imagery

1159. of what the church is like?

  1160. Wouldn't that be amazing

  1161. if, like,

1162. we're all doing all this?

  1163. You know,

  1164. we're all changing.

  1165. You know,

  1166. we're all, like,

  1167. trying to figure out

  1168. what does it mean

1169. to be an apprentice to Jesus

  1170. in the 21st century?

  1171. You know,

  1172. working out their faith,

  1173. being vulnerable,

  1174. speaking truth and love,

  1175. even though, like,

  1176. there will be setbacks.

  1177. Like,

1178. we're all going to keep growing

  1179. that way.

  1180. Now,

1181. if all of that sounds hard,

  1182. it's because it is,

  1183. it is hard,

  1184. right?

1185. It's just like going to the gym.

  1186. You know,

  1187. you don't start off

  1188. like the rock.

  1189. Or it's like,

  1190. you know,

  1191. behavior change is hard.

  1192. And loving is also

  1193. actually hard,

  1194. right?

  1195. We feel like sometimes

1196. we're in this comfort zone

  1197. and it's,

  1198. yeah,

  1199. it's just nicer

1200. to stay in this comfort area

  1201. without going out.

  1202. We feel like,

  1203. you know,

1204. when we love other people,

  1205. you know,

1206. you send a text like,

  1207. hey,

  1208. you know,

  1209. how's it going?

  1210. Other people don't respond.

  1211. You're like,

  1212. oh,

  1213. okay,

  1214. fine.

  1215. I don't know what's going on.

1216. But a lot of people

  1217. don't love back

  1218. the same way

  1219. that you might love

  1220. other people,

  1221. right?

  1222. And it feels like,

  1223. oh,

  1224. you know what?

  1225. It's just easier

  1226. not to like,

  1227. take that extra step

  1228. and like,

  1229. ask how they're doing.

1230. And I think opening up

  1231. also means,

  1232. you know,

  1233. loving other people

  1234. also means caring.

  1235. And that means

  1236. you're also going to

  1237. have a chance

  1238. of being disappointed,

  1239. right?

  1240. Whether that's,

  1241. you know,

  1242. CG drama.

  1243. I remember,

  1244. yeah,

  1245. that's,

  1246. I mean,

  1247. ask around,

  1248. this definitely happened.

  1249. People saying hurtful

  1250. things to each other

  1251. in CG are like,

  1252. you know,

  1253. you speak truth

  1254. and love

  1255. but then people

  1256. just like,

  1257. respond like,

  1258. horribly.

  1259. And,

  1260. yeah,

  1261. loving also just means

  1262. like,

  1263. interruption,

  1264. right?

  1265. It's like,

  1266. you have this well-laid

  1267. weekend plan

  1268. but suddenly,

  1269. like,

  1270. someone has an issue

  1271. and then,

  1272. okay,

  1273. you need to cancel

  1274. those plans

1275. or you need to like,

  1276. spend less time

  1277. going hiking

  1278. and just like,

  1279. spending that time

  1280. with that person

  1281. because there is like,

  1282. some sort of crisis

  1283. happening.

  1284. And,

  1285. sometimes we have

  1286. this like,

  1287. mental bank account

  1288. in our heads

  1289. where we're like,

  1290. okay,

  1291. we're like,

1292. keeping score a little bit

  1293. of like,

  1294. how we love

  1295. and,

  1296. you know,

  1297. we always,

  1298. you know,

  1299. whenever we give love,

  1300. you know,

  1301. we withdraw

  1302. but then we always

1303. want to receive it back,

  1304. right?

  1305. We don't ever want

  1306. to be like,

  1307. completely empty.

  1308. Like,

  1309. we kind of have

  1310. like a love tank

  1311. or a love bank

  1312. and here actually,

  1313. Paul reminds us

  1314. of the gospel,

  1315. right?

  1316. Because it's actually

1317. too hard on our own.

  1318. In verse 32,

  1319. he tells us

  1320. that even when

  1321. our debt,

  1322. our bank account

  1323. of God

  1324. was deeply,

  1325. deeply in the negative,

  1326. he forgave us

  1327. and he sacrificed himself

  1328. who,

  1329. he who was

  1330. of immeasurable worth

  1331. so that our bank

  1332. accounts of love

  1333. can also be

  1334. of immeasurable worth,

  1335. right?

1336. And so we can actually

  1337. just keep on giving

  1338. this love,

  1339. right?

  1340. Because we're drawing

  1341. from this huge reservoir

  1342. of love

1343. that just doesn't run out.

  1344. And,

  1345. you know,

  1346. sometimes,

  1347. yeah,

  1348. we can love

  1349. without being,

  1350. feeling like,

  1351. oh,

1352. we're going to be hurt

  1353. because,

  1354. you know,

  1355. God calls us

  1356. beloved children

  1357. even though

  1358. sometimes we feel like,

  1359. oh,

  1360. this ugly blob,

  1361. this dirty blob

  1362. and,

  1363. like,

  1364. actually,

1365. we can keep on going

  1366. because he loves us

1367. as this ocean of love

  1368. in Ephesians,

  1369. right,

  1370. which is so wide,

  1371. so long,

  1372. so high,

  1373. and so deep.

  1374. This ocean of love

  1375. that just

  1376. overcomes

  1377. any suffering

  1378. or any disappointment

  1379. that are just buckets

  1380. compared to this ocean.

  1381. and even for myself

  1382. this week,

  1383. man,

  1384. it's been

  1385. a hard week.

  1386. I was just,

  1387. no,

  1388. even I was,

  1389. like,

  1390. working on a sermon

  1391. on Saturday.

  1392. I was like,

  1393. okay,

  1394. Saturday,

  1395. last week,

  1396. I was like,

  1397. okay,

1398. this is a dedicated time

  1399. for a sermon.

  1400. Like,

  1401. okay,

  1402. I'm just going to,

  1403. like,

  1404. sit here

1405. and just work on it

  1406. and I get,

  1407. like,

  1408. a student

  1409. who's,

  1410. like,

  1411. I'm in some sort

  1412. of life emergency.

  1413. I'm like,

  1414. okay,

  1415. should I reach out

  1416. to that student?

  1417. I was like,

  1418. okay,

  1419. fine,

  1420. I'll talk to them.

1421. I met up with them

  1422. really quickly.

  1423. What I thought

  1424. might be,

  1425. like,

  1426. an hour conversation

  1427. became,

  1428. like,

  1429. a five-hour conversation.

  1430. I was like,

  1431. oh,

  1432. my gosh,

  1433. all right,

  1434. now I'm like,

  1435. or,

  1436. like,

  1437. you know,

  1438. throughout this week,

  1439. I remember just people,

  1440. like,

  1441. constantly dropping the ball

  1442. and I'm like,

  1443. okay,

  1444. I have to,

  1445. like,

  1446. pick up their slack

  1447. and then,

  1448. really hard

  1449. to be patient

  1450. with people

  1451. and,

  1452. you know,

  1453. even me,

  1454. I was,

  1455. like,

  1456. super aware

  1457. that my sermon

  1458. was coming up

  1459. about,

  1460. okay,

  1461. how we love people

1462. so I need to be,

  1463. like,

  1464. super aware,

  1465. okay,

1466. how I need to love people

  1467. well,

  1468. right,

  1469. but,

  1470. man,

  1471. let me tell you,

  1472. I struggled,

  1473. like,

  1474. big time.

  1475. I struggled big time.

  1476. My heart was just,

  1477. like,

  1478. bitter at different moments

  1479. and I realized,

  1480. like,

  1481. man,

  1482. I needed prayer.

  1483. I was,

  1484. like,

  1485. constantly praying,

  1486. like,

  1487. God,

  1488. like,

  1489. you know,

  1490. I'm,

  1491. like,

1492. kind of bitter at this moment

1493. even though it was really hard

  1494. that actually,

  1495. you know,

  1496. even though,

  1497. like,

  1498. man,

  1499. I have to constantly,

  1500. like,

  1501. forgive,

  1502. constantly,

  1503. like,

  1504. interrupt myself

  1505. and,

  1506. like,

  1507. be patient with people,

  1508. like,

  1509. actually seeing that

  1510. how sinful I was,

  1511. you know,

  1512. a reminder of actually

  1513. and how much love

  1514. and how much patience

  1515. God had with me

1516. and how much he forgave me

  1517. even when I was a jerk,

  1518. when I was impatient,

1519. even when I was grumbling

  1520. and,

  1521. you know,

  1522. living in love

  1523. in the 21st century

  1524. is really hard,

  1525. right,

1526. in the fast-paced Hong Kong,

  1527. where everything is moving

  1528. really quickly

1529. but God's grace is enough.

  1530. God's grace is enough

1531. each day to give us strength,

  1532. renew ourselves every day.

  1533. So,

  1534. friends,

1535. that is why every day

1536. we actually need to renew ourselves

  1537. in this abundant love

1538. that God has for us

1539. so that we can live out

  1540. as his new creations

  1541. and walking in love

  1542. as his children.

  1543. Let us pray.

  1544. Dear Father,

1545. thank you for this time

  1546. I'm able to,

  1547. yeah,

  1548. just read the word

  1549. and talk about

1550. just how you've been working

  1551. in our lives,

  1552. Lord.

  1553. And Father,

1554. I just pray that every day

1555. we see just how desperate

1556. we are for your love

  1557. because this world,

  1558. man,

1559. just takes our attention away

  1560. and it's so easy

  1561. to be impatient,

1562. so easy to be unloving,

1563. so easy to be in a hurry

  1564. and so easy to,

  1565. yeah,

  1566. withdraw,

  1567. Lord.

  1568. But Father,

1569. we know that your grace

  1570. and your love

  1571. is so wide,

  1572. so big.

1573. It's like an ocean of love

1574. that we can just drown in,

  1575. Lord,

  1576. and everything

  1577. that,

  1578. yeah,

  1579. comes our way,

  1580. Lord,

1581. it just pales in comparison.

  1582. And Father,

1583. I just pray that every day.

  1584. We're reminded

  1585. that we need to

  1586. make that effort,

  1587. Lord.

  1588. You know,

  1589. our faith isn't earned,

1590. but we do require effort.

  1591. And Father,

  1592. I just pray that,

  1593. yeah,

  1594. we just work that,

  1595. work out our faith

1596. and figure out what this means

1597. to live out being a Christian

  1598. in the 21st century,

  1599. Lord.

  1600. Let's pray that,

  1601. yeah,

1602. as we come out this week

1603. that we're just continually renewed

1604. and that whatever comes up at work

  1605. or in our CG,

  1606. Lord,

1607. that we are just renewed

  1608. in your love,

  1609. renewed in your,

  1610. a new identity

1611. that we can live out

  1612. in ways that continue

  1613. to love you

  1614. and model after you,

  1615. Jesus.

1616. I pray that in Jesus' name,

  1617. amen.
