  1. Father, we live in a time, Father,

  2. and you know how deeply Canadian most of us are,

  3. and we're afraid to talk about certain things,

  4. and we're even afraid to see certain things written in your word.

  5. And so, Father, we ask that you help us not to be afraid,

  6. to be secure, Father, in your word,

  7. and secure in your love for us,

  8. and that as your gospel becomes more real to us

  9. and helps us to be more secure in who you are

  10. and your great love for us,

  11. and that this is your word, your world,

  12. and we are your children living in your world under your care,

  13. that you would help us, Father,

  14. to allow your word to form us deeply and deeply,

  15. knowing that as your word forms us deeply,

  16. it'll form us to generosity and hospitality,

  17. to righteousness and to justice and mercy,

  18. and to prayerfulness.

  19. So, Father, do this wonderful work in our lives,

  20. and we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  21. Amen.

  22. Please be seated.

  23. So, you might have noticed when Matt was reading,

  24. but I have a full disclosure in case you didn't.

  25. The first half of this, we're reading the first half of a story.

  26. So, there's a story in two parts,

  27. and it's the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  28. I'm also aware that it's Pride Month.

  29. And so, if you're a guest here,

  30. or if you're a guest online,

  31. just let you know,

  32. those of you,

  33. if I move my head like this, it creates feedback,

  34. just let you know that

  35. this isn't like me throwing down the gauntlet,

  36. or trying to give the finger to anybody,

  37. or anything like that,

  38. or a challenge.

  39. I sort of,

  40. I don't think about what months they are,

  41. and stuff like that.

  42. And those of you know,

  43. we don't really do anything for Mother's Day,

  44. or Father's Day,

  45. or other days.

  46. We just preach through books of the Bible,

  47. or large sections of the Bible,

  48. and it never really struck me

  49. that we would be talking about this chapter,

  50. during this story,

  51. during Pride Month.

  52. So, it's not a challenge.

  53. It's,

  54. but I'm not embarrassed about the story.

  55. And maybe it's, in fact,

  56. one of the best times

  57. for us who are Christians

  58. to look at a story like this

  59. during Pride Week.

  60. Because actually,

  61. as you see this week and next week,

  62. it forms us towards compassion,

  63. as well as to justice and to righteousness.

  64. Now, just the other thing about it,

  65. it's the actual,

  66. this is sort of the lead up to Sodom and Gomorrah,

  67. and next week we actually have

  68. the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  69. Spoiler alert,

  70. but there you go,

  71. it gets destroyed.

  72. But interestingly enough,

  73. in this lead up

  74. to the story

  75. of Sodom and Gomorrah

  76. being destroyed,

  77. the Bible actually

  78. touches very,

  79. in very simple ways,

  80. in a very simple story,

  81. with the mystery of human freedom

  82. and worth and dignity,

  83. and the possibility of having true meaning

  84. in your life.

  85. Not a meaning that you sort of grab for yourself,

  86. but a meaning which is bigger than you

  87. that you can enter into and walk into it.

  88. So let's look,

  89. open up your Bibles,

  90. and we'll read this text together,

  91. this scary text.

  92. Part of this text has a bit of a,

  93. anyway,

  94. let's get into the text.

  95. And it goes like this,

  96. Genesis 18,

    Genesis 18:1

  97. verse 1,

  98. and we're going through the Abraham stories,

  99. and we're going to end in,

  100. we're going to take a week off the last week of June,

  101. but then we'll finish it the first week of July

  102. with the story of Isaac being sacrificed,

  103. potentially sacrificed,

  104. or sacrificed because of God's command.

  105. Here's how this story goes.

  106. And the Lord appeared to him,

  107. that's Abraham,

  108. by the oaks of Mamre,

  109. as he sat at the door of his tent

  110. in the heat of the day.

  111. He lifted up his eyes and looked,

  112. and behold,

  113. three men were standing in front of him.

  114. When he saw them,

  115. he ran from the door to meet them

  116. and bowed himself to the earth.

  117. And I just sort of pause,

  118. look again at verse 2,

  119. he's at his tent,

  120. and then verse 2,

  121. he lifted up his eyes and looked,

  122. and behold,

  123. three men were standing in front of him.

  124. Now, just a couple of things about this.

  125. I don't want to take too long about it.

  126. The first thing is,

  127. is you're going to see

  128. Abraham reacts in a very odd way to these men.

  129. And I know there's at least two people here

  130. in the service today who know Hebrew very well,

  131. and so if they tell me otherwise,

  132. I'll acknowledge it next week.

  133. But I think part of what explains the oddness

  134. that's going to happen afterwards

  135. is that they just appeared.

  136. He's sitting there, you know,

  137. and all of a sudden there's three men.

  138. Like, one moment there's none,

  139. and all of a sudden there are.

  140. And I think that's what helps to explain

  141. the odd things that he's going to do

  142. in response to it.

  143. Like, in a sense, the over-the-topness

  144. of how he responds to it.

  145. The other thing is about these men,

  146. and here's the thing,

  147. is if you read the text,

  148. as we read the text,

  149. and as you go into it next week as well,

  150. they're always called men,

  151. but they're also called angels.

  152. And one of the men is also called the Lord.

  153. And the narrator uses the word Yahweh,

  154. in a sense the covenant name for God,

  155. and they also use the word Adonai.

  156. Adonai, Abraham himself,

  157. clearly refers to this one of the people as God.

  158. So, you know, what's really going here?

  159. The Bible doesn't really explain it.

  160. It's not the incarnation.

  161. I don't think it's the pre-incarnate Christ

  162. or anything like that.

  163. Using a bit of a video game analogy,

  164. I think it's an avatar.

  165. That may be a better way to explain it.

  166. That two angels, in a sense,

  167. appear or take on flesh,

  168. just for the purpose of this story,

  169. and are in the story.

  170. And God himself, the angel of the Lord,

  171. who's mentioned throughout the Old Testament

  172. in different places,

  173. an angel who, in a sense, represents God,

  174. this also is like an avatar.

  175. So that to speak to this angel

  176. as if speaking to the Lord,

  177. and to hear this angel speak

  178. as if the Lord speaks.

  179. I think that's what's going on in the text.

  180. But the Bible never makes it clear,

  181. other than the fact that the Bible is clear,

  182. that up until the coming of Jesus,

  183. no man has ever seen God and lived.

  184. So I think it's like an avatar.

  185. Those of you who are familiar with video games,

  186. I think that's what's going on.

  187. So these three humans

  188. and or angels,

  189. all of a sudden they're there.

  190. And that's why Abraham,

  191. in verse two,

  192. he runs from the tent door to meet them,

  193. and he bowed himself to the earth.

  194. And in verse three,

  195. he speaks and says,

  196. O Lord,

  197. if I have found favor in your sight,

  198. do not pass by your servant.

  199. Let a little water be brought

  200. and wash your feet

  201. and rest yourselves under the tree.

  202. In other words, in the shade.

  203. While I bring a morsel of bread,

  204. just a morsel of bread,

  205. that you may refresh yourselves.

  206. And after that,

  207. you may pass on,

  208. since you have come to your servant.

  209. So Abraham is showing hospitality

  210. and also deference.

  211. So they said,

  212. do as you have said.

  213. In other words,

  214. they said,

  215. okay,

  216. we'll go and sit under the tree

  217. and you go and get the little morsel ready.

  218. Now just sort of pause here for a second

  219. before I read the next little bit.

  220. But,

  221. you know,

  222. I think we went,

  223. all told,

  224. 11 days without hydro.

  225. And,

  226. you know,

  227. such first world problems.

  228. It was so frustrating.

  229. I mean,

  230. we had a generator connected,

  231. you know,

  232. but I,

  233. you have to,

  234. first you have to make your coffee.

  235. Then you have to unplug

  236. the coffee maker.

  237. And then you have to plug in the toaster.

  238. And then you have to make the toast

  239. rather than putting the two on

  240. at the same time.

  241. And I'm just being a big baby.

  242. But that's like tiresome

  243. and stuff like that.

  244. And,

  245. you know,

  246. and you,

  247. you know yourselves as well.

  248. You know,

  249. some of you have virtually nothing

  250. in your fridge

  251. because between eating out

  252. and calling Uber,

  253. all you have in your fridge

  254. is maybe some mustard

  255. or some ketchup

  256. or something like that.

  257. Because we like everything quick.

  258. We like everything instant.

  259. We like everything eating out.

  260. So this next bit

  261. would drive us crazy.

  262. He says,

  263. let's just have a bit of

  264. morsel of bread,

  265. right?

  266. And then look what happens

  267. in verse six.

  268. And Abraham went quickly

  269. into the tent to Sarah

  270. and said,

  271. quick,

  272. three seahs of fine flour.

  273. Knead it

  274. and make cakes

  275. or bread.

  276. That's 22 liters

  277. of flour.

  278. Take 22 liters

  279. of flour,

  280. get a fire going

  281. and make bread

  282. out of 22 liters.

  283. That's a huge amount

  284. of flour.

  285. And then,

  286. verse seven,

  287. Abraham ran to the herd

  288. and took a calf.

  289. Well,

  290. just,

  291. I mean,

  292. I'm a city guy.

  293. I grew up in Montreal

  294. and then I went to Eganville.

  295. You know,

  296. and then I lived in Ottawa

  297. and I mainly lived in Ottawa.

  298. But let me tell you,

  299. like a calf isn't just

  300. like a little thing

  301. like this.

  302. He's not talking about

  303. like a baby goat,

  304. like a calf.

  305. It might weigh 500 pounds.

  306. 500 pounds.

  307. So,

  308. look,

  309. look what's going on here.

  310. It's like,

  311. it's crazy.

  312. For us Canadians,

  313. right?

  314. Have to stop for a moment.

  315. A morsel of bread

  316. and a bit of water,

  317. right?

  318. Verse seven,

  319. and Abraham ran to the herd

  320. and took a calf,

  321. tender and good.

  322. Hard text for vegetarians.

  323. And gave it to a young man

  324. who prepared it quickly.

  325. In other words,

  326. he killed it,

  327. skinned it,

  328. took out the guts,

  329. starts roasting it.

  330. This isn't just something

  331. like getting on the phone

  332. and hoping that

  333. if your Uber order

  334. is going to be longer

  335. than 25 minutes,

  336. you're not going to take it.

  337. Like,

  338. this is lots of work.

  339. 500 pounds of beef,

  340. 22 liters of flour

  341. made into bread

  342. and all this other stuff as well.

  343. Then he took curds

  344. and milk,

  345. verse eight,

  346. and the calf

  347. that he had prepared

  348. and set it before them.

  349. And he stood

  350. by them

  351. under the tree

  352. while they ate.

  353. Now,

  354. just sort of,

  355. you know,

  356. pause here for a second.

  357. Some of you

  358. might be thinking,

  359. like,

  360. this is way overkill,

  361. this is exaggeration.

  362. And what waste?

  363. Like,

  364. three dudes

  365. cannot,

  366. even the biggest eaters

  367. amongst you,

  368. if we were to pick

  369. the three guys

  370. with the biggest appetites,

  371. could not eat

  372. 500 pound calf,

  373. 22 liters of stuff,

  374. and all the other stuff.

  375. So what's going on here?

  376. I had a little tiny bit

  377. of a glimpse

  378. of what was going with this

  379. the first time.

  380. I got invited,

  381. unworthy as I am,

  382. to,

  383. in 2003,

  384. to go to rural Kenya.

  385. They invited

  386. evangelical Anglican,

  387. evangelical Anglicans

  388. from all over the world

  389. to come together

  390. for this consultation.

  391. And,

  392. this wasn't like

  393. a fancy type of thing

  394. where people on,

  395. you know,

  396. government expense accounts

  397. or Apple expense accounts

  398. or something like that go.

  399. This was in rural Kenya

  400. where,

  401. like,

  402. real Kenyans

  403. would actually go

  404. and real Nigerians

  405. and real people

  406. from the Congo

  407. and real people

  408. from Chile

  409. where it goes.

  410. So it was in rural,

  411. it was like about

  412. 50 kilometers north

  413. and upstream

  414. of,

  415. uphill from Nairobi.

  416. And on the Sunday

  417. that I was there

  418. we got invited to go,

  419. me and a fellow

  420. from India

  421. and a fellow

  422. from England.

  423. The three of us

  424. got invited

  425. to walk several kilometers

  426. down a road

  427. that a car couldn't make it

  428. to this place

  429. where there was a church.

  430. And we were the guests

  431. of honor

  432. and the English fellow

  433. got to preach.

  434. And it's so neat.

  435. Some of you

  436. have been to rural Africa

  437. or maybe some of you

  438. even have grown up there.

  439. And it's not just

  440. a church building

  441. but there's like

  442. a compound as well.

  443. And so as we're coming up

  444. for the meal

  445. the women

  446. are at several fires

  447. in the church compound

  448. making food.

  449. And as the service

  450. is going on

  451. you can smell the food.

  452. And at the end

  453. of the service

  454. the three of us

  455. with the elders

  456. of the congregation

  457. and the lay reader

  458. who was looking after it

  459. we get invited

  460. for the meal.

  461. We're invited to stay

  462. for the meal.

  463. It was part of the deal

  464. because they wanted

  465. to honor us.

  466. Now it was very,

  467. very odd for me

  468. as a Canadian

  469. to have this meal

  470. because basically

  471. other than the lay reader

  472. and the several men

  473. who were the elders

  474. and us three guests

  475. nobody ate.

  476. The women

  477. and others

  478. sat around us

  479. the outside of the room

  480. and others were outside.

  481. And after we ate

  482. they ate.

  483. Now it was just

  484. a way of them

  485. and their culture

  486. showing us honor.

  487. I felt uncomfortable

  488. like by my nature

  489. I would have said

  490. you know,

  491. no, no, you have this seat.

  492. That would have

  493. insulted them.

  494. They were honoring us.

  495. So what we see here

  496. is if you think about it

  497. for a second

  498. Abraham has realized

  499. that the Lord

  500. has showed up.

  501. So he's not just

  502. going to make

  503. two pieces

  504. of pita bread

  505. and a couple

  506. of dried fish

  507. to give to the Lord.

  508. Everybody should celebrate.

  509. And we know

  510. from other places

  511. in this story

  512. that Abraham

  513. has many servants

  514. many other dependents

  515. and others.

  516. They're all going to eat.

  517. It's not just

  518. for these three guys.

  519. This is a celebration.

  520. We're going to have

  521. the fatted calf.

  522. This is going to be

  523. a great day

  524. but as a way

  525. to honor them

  526. not even Abraham

  527. in this particular case

  528. eats with them.

  529. Just the three people eat.

  530. But you could be sure

  531. that if you went back

  532. in a time machine

  533. after the three had eaten

  534. everybody would eat.

  535. It's a festival.

  536. It's a celebration.

  537. But it's also

  538. showing honor

  539. to these three.

  540. And now we see

  541. something that

  542. they're going to

  543. actually say.

  544. Now before we read

  545. the thing that

  546. the angels say

  547. and remember

  548. this is part of the story

  549. leading up to

  550. the destruction

  551. of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  552. And one of the problems

  553. that we Canadians

  554. have with the Bible

  555. is we think the Bible

  556. is confused

  557. and we're not.

  558. But often

  559. what happens

  560. is that we are

  561. inconsistent

  562. and confused

  563. and massively unaware.

  564. Now if you think

  565. about it for a second

  566. and many people pray

  567. what happens

  568. so first of all

  569. most of the time

  570. we like to live our lives

  571. and basically have God

  572. do nothing to do with us.

  573. We want to do our own thing

  574. in our own way

  575. in our own time.

  576. But sometimes

  577. when we're really

  578. really really really

  579. really in trouble

  580. we pray

  581. and when we pray

  582. what do we want God to do?

  583. We want God

  584. to almost make

  585. all of the people

  586. you know

  587. maybe the bank managers

  588. or maybe our boss

  589. or our parents

  590. or our wife

  591. or our husband

  592. we want him almost

  593. to make them like puppets

  594. and he can just sort of

  595. all of a sudden

  596. move them around

  597. in such a way

  598. that the trouble

  599. that we're in

  600. goes away.

  601. And other times

  602. we pray

  603. that we want God

  604. to intervene

  605. in a sense

  606. that's like

  607. that's almost miraculous.

  608. We pray

  609. because you know

  610. somebody

  611. is close to death's door

  612. and we want them to live

  613. or we know

  614. that there's

  615. a financial crisis

  616. in one of

  617. you know

  618. for our friend

  619. or one of our kids

  620. and we want

  621. we want that

  622. to come to an end

  623. and so in a sense

  624. we pray for a miracle

  625. and if you think

  626. about it for a second

  627. what we're

  628. what we're showing

  629. is that when we want it

  630. when I want it

  631. when you want it

  632. I want God

  633. to intervene

  634. when I don't want

  635. him to intervene

  636. I want him

  637. out of the way

  638. but I want

  639. him to intervene

  640. and when he intervenes

  641. in a way

  642. that's like a miracle

  643. it's like this

  644. and if we're

  645. in a Bible study group

  646. or we're having

  647. a mentoring thing

  648. or maybe if

  649. you know

  650. because lots of people

  651. who aren't Christians

  652. and lots of people

  653. who even consider

  654. themselves secular

  655. they also pray

  656. I was talking

  657. to a young man

  658. this week

  659. who has nothing

  660. to do with

  661. the Christian faith

  662. but he told me

  663. he prays

  664. amongst other things

  665. but you see

  666. here's where

  667. inconsistencies

  668. if God

  669. is a God

  670. who can intervene

  671. and we want him

  672. to do that

  673. why

  674. why is it bad

  675. if God intervenes

  676. alright for a miracle

  677. but not in judgment

  678. like the reason

  679. we have a problem

  680. with that

  681. it actually reveals

  682. not only that

  683. we're confused

  684. but that in our

  685. heart of hearts

  686. I want to be God

  687. now each of you

  688. are saying

  689. George

  690. you're not God

  691. and under your breath

  692. you're saying

  693. because I'm God

  694. and that's why

  695. there's often

  696. conflict

  697. you have two

  698. people with

  699. God projects

  700. in denial

  701. trying to live

  702. together

  703. if you have kids

  704. you have four

  705. five six

  706. whatever the number

  707. is

  708. with God projects

  709. all trying to live

  710. together

  711. so we're a bit

  712. confused about this

  713. but this is the

  714. right type

  715. of intervention

  716. and that's

  717. what we see here

  718. in the next few

  719. verses

  720. look at verse

  721. nine

  722. these

  723. that's the

  724. guest

  725. they said

  726. to him

  727. verse nine

  728. where is

  729. Sarah your

  730. wife

  731. and Abraham

  732. said she's

  733. in the tent

  734. the Lord

  735. said I will

  736. surely return

  737. to you about

  738. this time

  739. next year

  740. and Sarah

  741. your wife

  742. shall have

  743. a son

  744. and Sarah

  745. was listening

  746. at the tent

  747. door behind

  748. him

  749. now Abraham

  750. and Sarah

  751. were old

  752. advanced

  753. in years

  754. the way

  755. of women

  756. had ceased

  757. to be with

  758. Sarah

  759. now just

  760. sort of

  761. pause here

  762. what the

  763. language is

  764. saying is

  765. that Sarah

  766. had been

  767. post-menopausal

  768. for a long

  769. time

  770. the original

  771. language

  772. the normal

  773. menstrual cycle

  774. that women

  775. have

  776. once they

  777. get a certain

  778. age

  779. puberty

  780. that has

  781. come to an

  782. end for

  783. quite a long

  784. time

  785. one of the

  786. things which

  787. is going on

  788. in this

  789. story

  790. is it's

  791. very similar

  792. to what

  793. happens if

  794. you read

  795. the gospels

  796. the eyewitness

  797. ancient

  798. biographies of

  799. Jesus

  800. is you see

  801. as you read

  802. the gospels

  803. very carefully

  804. that nobody

  805. believed

  806. first of all

  807. that Jesus

  808. would die

  809. and then

  810. second of all

  811. that if he

  812. did die

  813. that he

  814. would rise

  815. from the

  816. dead

  817. like nobody

  818. believed it

  819. and the

  820. stories

  821. all four of

  822. them set

  823. this up

  824. and this

  825. is setting

  826. up the

  827. fact that

  828. she's old

  829. she doesn't

  830. believe this

  831. nobody

  832. believes this

  833. that God

  834. in fact

  835. is going

  836. to do

  837. this

  838. profound

  839. miracle

  840. which is

  841. going to

  842. happen

  843. in a

  844. couple

  845. of

  846. chapters

  847. so after

  848. the general

  849. promise that

  850. there would

  851. be a son

  852. now it's

  853. very specific

  854. this son

  855. is going to

  856. come this

  857. time next

  858. year when

  859. they come

  860. back

  861. Sarah

  862. will have

  863. a son

  864. and it's

  865. setting up

  866. the miracle

  867. verse 12

  868. though Sarah

  869. doesn't believe

  870. this verse

  871. 12 so Sarah

  872. laughed to

  873. herself

  874. saying

  875. after I am

  876. worn out

  877. and my

  878. Lord is

  879. old

  880. it's a

  881. different word

  882. than Lord

  883. that's been

  884. used all the

  885. way through

  886. by the way

  887. it's

  888. the old

  889. guy

  890. shall I

  891. have

  892. pleasure

  893. the Lord

  894. said to

  895. Abraham

  896. why did

  897. Sarah

  898. laugh

  899. and say

  900. shall I

  901. indeed bear

  902. a child

  903. now that

  904. I am

  905. old

  906. he reads

  907. her thoughts

  908. is anything

  909. too hard

  910. for the

  911. Lord

  912. that could

  913. be a whole

  914. sermon

  915. just in

  916. of itself

  917. it's the

  918. big challenge

  919. to every

  920. single one

  921. of us

  922. it's the

  923. big challenge

  924. of prayer

  925. it's the

  926. big challenge

  927. of how

  928. to live

  929. our lives

  930. with a

  931. type of

  932. confidence

  933. and humility

  934. is anything

  935. too hard

  936. for the

  937. Lord

  938. at the

  939. appointed

  940. time I

  941. will return

  942. to you

  943. about this

  944. time next

  945. year

  946. and Sarah

  947. shall have

  948. a son

  949. but Sarah

  950. she's caught

  951. by her

  952. lie

  953. she's caught

  954. by what

  955. she her

  956. lack of

  957. faith

  958. her laughing

  959. at God

  960. and she's

  961. embarrassed

  962. and so

  963. she lies

  964. but Sarah

  965. denied it

  966. saying I

  967. did not

  968. laugh

  969. for she

  970. was afraid

  971. but the

  972. Lord said

  973. no you

  974. did

  975. you laughed

  976. now

  977. this is

  978. going to be

  979. important

  980. at the

  981. end of it

  982. but we

  983. see here

  984. once again

  985. we see

  986. that the

  987. Bible

  988. does not

  989. show that

  990. Abraham and

  991. Sarah are

  992. perfect people

  993. and that

  994. God

  995. is going to

  996. show grace

  997. is showing

  998. grace to

  999. imperfect

  1000. people

  1001. and imperfect

  1002. is not even

  1003. the right word

  1004. to use the

  1005. old fashioned

  1006. biblical word

  1007. Abraham and

  1008. Sarah are

  1009. sinners

  1010. and God

  1011. shows grace

  1012. to sinners

  1013. nothing

  1014. nothing

  1015. is too

  1016. hard for

  1017. the Lord

  1018. now we

  1019. come to

  1020. the part

  1021. that's

  1022. going to

  1023. start to

  1024. make us

  1025. a little

  1026. bit nervous

  1027. it's the

  1028. part about

  1029. what

  1030. what is

  1031. God going

  1032. to do

  1033. about

  1034. Sodom

  1035. and

  1036. Gomorrah

  1037. look at

  1038. verse 16

  1039. then the

  1040. men

  1041. set out

  1042. from there

  1043. and they

  1044. looked down

  1045. towards

  1046. Sodom

  1047. and Abraham

  1048. went out

  1049. with them

  1050. went with

  1051. them to

  1052. set them

  1053. on their

  1054. way

  1055. he's a

  1056. good host

  1057. he's going

  1058. to walk

  1059. a little

  1060. way

  1061. with them

  1062. on their

  1063. journey

  1064. and the

  1065. Lord said

  1066. shall I

  1067. hide from

  1068. Abraham

  1069. what I am

  1070. about to

  1071. do

  1072. seeing that

  1073. Abraham

  1074. shall surely

  1075. become a

  1076. great nation

  1077. a great and

  1078. mighty nation

  1079. and all the

  1080. nations of the

  1081. earth shall be

  1082. blessed in him

  1083. for I have

  1084. chosen him

  1085. and the word

  1086. there is

  1087. it's a

  1088. relational word

  1089. I know

  1090. him

  1091. I understand

  1092. him

  1093. it's not

  1094. just like

  1095. you know

  1096. eeny meeny

  1097. miny mo

  1098. there's this

  1099. idea of

  1100. the choosing

  1101. the

  1102. it's sort

  1103. of a little

  1104. bit similar

  1105. to in a

  1106. sense

  1107. the man

  1108. who's marrying

  1109. the woman

  1110. chooses

  1111. his wife

  1112. and the

  1113. woman chooses

  1114. her husband

  1115. and they

  1116. know each

  1117. other

  1118. it's not

  1119. just the

  1120. marriage ceremony

  1121. but as life

  1122. goes on

  1123. they have

  1124. a knowledge

  1125. of each

  1126. other

  1127. and that's

  1128. being

  1129. communicated

  1130. here

  1131. it's a

  1132. it's a

  1133. personal

  1134. interpersonal

  1135. relational

  1136. type of

  1137. word

  1138. verse 19

  1139. for I have

  1140. chosen him

  1141. that he

  1142. may command

  1143. his children

  1144. and his

  1145. household

  1146. after him

  1147. to keep

  1148. the way

  1149. of the

  1150. Lord

  1151. by doing

  1152. righteousness

  1153. and justice

  1154. the way

  1155. of the

  1156. Lord

  1157. is to

  1158. do

  1159. righteousness

  1160. and justice

  1161. so that

  1162. the Lord

  1163. may bring

  1164. to Abraham

  1165. what he

  1166. has promised

  1167. him

  1168. so

  1169. so God

  1170. the Lord

  1171. says to

  1172. himself

  1173. you see

  1174. what

  1175. this story

  1176. is communicating

  1177. to us

  1178. in a very

  1179. powerful way

  1180. and it's

  1181. one of the

  1182. reasons you

  1183. see we

  1184. gather in

  1185. church on

  1186. a Sunday

  1187. and part

  1188. of what

  1189. gathering

  1190. in a

  1191. church

  1192. on a

  1193. Sunday

  1194. is all

  1195. about

  1196. is the

  1197. word of

  1198. the Lord

  1199. is opened

  1200. and we

  1201. spend time

  1202. thinking about

  1203. it

  1204. because God

  1205. desires to

  1206. reveal his

  1207. heart to

  1208. us

  1209. he desires

  1210. to speak

  1211. to us

  1212. and his

  1213. words are

  1214. grace

  1215. he desires

  1216. to give

  1217. to us

  1218. and he

  1219. desires us

  1220. to help him

  1221. to understand

  1222. better who

  1223. he is

  1224. and who

  1225. we are

  1226. and what

  1227. the real

  1228. world is

  1229. like

  1230. and how

  1231. to live

  1232. in the

  1233. world

  1234. and so

  1235. we see

  1236. here that

  1237. we see

  1238. here this

  1239. in a sense

  1240. how God

  1241. normally

  1242. thinks

  1243. it's brought

  1244. out here

  1245. in this

  1246. particular

  1247. story

  1248. that that's

  1249. partly what

  1250. God wants

  1251. to do

  1252. and righteousness

  1253. and justice

  1254. are put

  1255. together

  1256. it's not

  1257. that you

  1258. either be

  1259. righteous

  1260. or you

  1261. be just

  1262. that you

  1263. have to

  1264. choose one

  1265. of the

  1266. two of

  1267. them

  1268. you can't

  1269. have one

  1270. without the

  1271. other

  1272. and they

  1273. come from

  1274. the same

  1275. same

  1276. root

  1277. and

  1278. and

  1279. and

  1280. and

  1281. it's

  1282. all about

  1283. righteousness

  1284. is is

  1285. living

  1286. well

  1287. and it's

  1288. living

  1289. well in

  1290. God's

  1291. world

  1292. and it's

  1293. living

  1294. well with

  1295. God

  1296. and with

  1297. all God's

  1298. creation

  1299. with other

  1300. people

  1301. and it's

  1302. it's

  1303. righteousness

  1304. is connected

  1305. to flourishing

  1306. in that

  1307. world

  1308. and justice

  1309. is all

  1310. about

  1311. restoring

  1312. the

  1313. flourishing

  1314. of human

  1315. beings

  1316. and human

  1317. relationships

  1318. in God's

  1319. world

  1320. in God's

  1321. presence

  1322. and sometimes

  1323. you have to

  1324. restore

  1325. because we

  1326. live in a

  1327. fallen

  1328. world

  1329. and God's

  1330. people get

  1331. oppressed

  1332. and when

  1333. God's people

  1334. get oppressed

  1335. then justice

  1336. is required

  1337. the oppressors

  1338. have to be

  1339. stopped

  1340. and there

  1341. has to be

  1342. some punishment

  1343. done to

  1344. them

  1345. and the

  1346. oppressed

  1347. need to be

  1348. delivered

  1349. and set

  1350. free

  1351. to the end

  1352. that they

  1353. can flourish

  1354. and that is

  1355. the way

  1356. of the

  1357. Lord

  1358. so God

  1359. knows

  1360. what's

  1361. going to

  1362. happen

  1363. and he

  1364. realizes

  1365. or he

  1366. communicates

  1367. he's going

  1368. to let

  1369. Abraham

  1370. know

  1371. what's

  1372. happening

  1373. verse

  1374. 20

  1375. and the

  1376. Lord

  1377. said

  1378. this is

  1379. now to

  1380. he's speaking

  1381. to Abraham

  1382. because the

  1383. outcry against

  1384. Sodom and

  1385. Gomorrah

  1386. is great

  1387. and their

  1388. sin is

  1389. very grave

  1390. I will

  1391. go down

  1392. to see

  1393. I will

  1394. go down

  1395. to see

  1396. whether they

  1397. have done

  1398. all together

  1399. according to

  1400. the outcry

  1401. that has

  1402. come to

  1403. me

  1404. and if

  1405. not

  1406. I will

  1407. know

  1408. now

  1409. here's the

  1410. thing about

  1411. stories

  1412. stories

  1413. work in

  1414. connection

  1415. with abstract

  1416. ideas to

  1417. help us to

  1418. understand abstract

  1419. ideas better

  1420. stories in a

  1421. sense shape

  1422. us to

  1423. understand

  1424. things

  1425. sometimes when

  1426. we realize

  1427. you know how

  1428. sometimes you

  1429. come to an

  1430. insight and

  1431. on one level

  1432. it's like you

  1433. always knew it

  1434. but you never

  1435. sort of put it

  1436. into words

  1437. and that often

  1438. happens because

  1439. stories have

  1440. formed us to

  1441. understand certain

  1442. things

  1443. so one of the

  1444. things that we've

  1445. seen I haven't

  1446. talked about it

  1447. much lately but

  1448. when they talk

  1449. all the time

  1450. throughout these

  1451. stories when they

  1452. talk about God

  1453. giving the land

  1454. that's a simple

  1455. way of

  1456. communicating that

  1457. God is sovereign

  1458. that he's all

  1459. powerful that he's

  1460. transcendent that

  1461. he's a higher

  1462. higher than all

  1463. those gods and I

  1464. can use words like

  1465. transcendent and I

  1466. can use words like

  1467. sovereign and we

  1468. might or might not

  1469. know what they

  1470. mean but when we

  1471. hear the Bible say

  1472. that God is going

  1473. to give the land

  1474. to Abraham that's

  1475. communicating that

  1476. God is sovereign

  1477. it's forming us to

  1478. have a bit of a

  1479. sense about what

  1480. sovereignty might

  1481. mean or all

  1482. powerful might mean

  1483. and the same thing

  1484. here it's not that

  1485. because you might

  1486. say well how did

  1487. like this doesn't

  1488. make any sense

  1489. George like I

  1490. thought God knew

  1491. all things like

  1492. didn't you just say

  1493. earlier is anything

  1494. too hard for the

  1495. Lord like isn't that

  1496. what you just said

  1497. earlier is not what

  1498. the Bible just said

1499. so how is it that

  1500. God can't know

  1501. what's going down

  1502. there well this

  1503. story is using this

  1504. very simple type of

  1505. language to communicate

  1506. profound truths about

  1507. God and profound

  1508. truths as well once

  1509. we we understand

1510. that who God is and

  1511. how he's made the

  1512. world and if God

1513. does this we need to

1514. do it we need to do

1515. it as well and what

  1516. what's being

  1517. communicated is that

  1518. God is not petty

  1519. he's not anger

  1520. driven he's driven

  1521. by justice he's driven

  1522. by goodness he's driven

1523. by the truth he's driven

  1524. he's deeply patient

  1525. and those are what

  1526. drive him and none

  1527. of his judgments are

  1528. done slap dash or

  1529. without knowing what's

  1530. actually gone on it's

  1531. why in many other

  1532. places in the Bible

  1533. especially in the New

  1534. Testament and you read

  1535. the book of Revelation

  1536. the constant claim made

1537. at the end of the days

  1538. as God's judgments are

  1539. fully revealed and in

  1540. a sense we replay what's

  1541. happened both at the

1542. end of the ages and

  1543. throughout the ages the

  1544. constant refrain is that

  1545. God was just praise

1546. him he did what was

1547. just and he wouldn't be

1548. just if he did things

  1549. slap dash he wouldn't

1550. be just if he didn't do

1551. it with what truly had

  1552. happened what was truly

  1553. wrong who were truly

  1554. affected he wouldn't be

1555. just he wouldn't be just

1556. or worthy of praise if

1557. he was driven by anger

  1558. and pettiness and so

  1559. this is communicating in

1560. a very simple but easily

  1561. to remember what like

1562. you can tell this story

  1563. to young children and

1564. and read it to them over

1565. and over and over again

1566. and as you read it over

1567. and over and over to

  1568. them it's it's forming

  1569. within them this idea

1570. God is not anger driven

1571. God wants to know the

1572. truth and and God acts

1573. out of the truth and God

  1574. acts in a way that's

1575. just he acts in a way

  1576. that's fair and that's

  1577. what's being communicated

  1578. here in this particular

  1579. thing

  1580. but there's something

1581. else that still has to

  1582. be revealed about God

1583. and that is his mercy

1584. even before the story of

  1585. the destruction of Sodom

  1586. and Gomorrah the question

  1587. is is God merciful

  1588. well that's what's going to

  1589. be communicated very

  1590. powerfully and not only

  1591. powerfully it's going to

1592. be communicated in such a

1593. way that it gives us a

  1594. an insight about the

  1595. profound dignity and

  1596. worth of human beings

1597. here's how it goes and

  1598. some of you will

1599. recognize this is a very

  1600. famous story and at

1601. least in some circles it

1602. goes like this verse 22

1603. so the men turned from

  1604. there and went towards

  1605. Sodom but Abraham still

  1606. stood before the Lord

1607. then Abraham drew near and

  1608. said in other words

1609. Abraham comes right up to

1610. the Lord this is an image

1611. of prayer by the way

1612. right coming near to the

1613. Lord to speak to him and

1614. to hear him speak to you

1615. verse 23 then Abraham drew

1616. near and said will you

  1617. indeed sweep away the

  1618. righteous with the wicked

1619. in other words you've said

1620. you're just will you sweep

1621. away the righteous with the

1622. wicked suppose there are 50

  1623. righteous within the city

1624. will you then sweep away the

1625. place and not spare it for

1626. the 50 righteous who are in

1627. it now by the way just pause

1628. here for a second the

1629. assumed subtext of all of

1630. this is two things which are

  1631. very important to grasp

  1632. Abraham knows Sodom and

1633. Gomorrah and he knows that if

1634. God goes and looks they will be

1635. swept away see part of what's

1636. being shown here about us as

1637. Christians is that we are to

1638. pray for all sorts and

1639. conditions of men and women

1640. now obviously you do not make

1641. the mistake of praying for

1642. Putin the way you pray for the

  1643. Ukrainian freedom fighter but

1644. you are to pray for both but not

1645. with moral equivalence but you

1646. pray for both so Abraham knows

1647. and believes two things that if

1648. God actually comes down the city

1649. is destroyed so this isn't moral

  1650. relativism this isn't moral

1651. indifference but this is Abraham

1652. interceding for very bad people

1653. verse 23 again then Abraham drew

1654. near and said will you indeed

1655. sweep away the righteous with the

1656. wicked suppose there are 50

1657. righteous within the city will you

1658. then sweep away the place and not

1659. spare it for the 50 righteous who are

1660. in it far be it from you to do such a

1661. thing to put the righteous to death

1662. with the wicked so that the

1663. righteous fair is the wicked far be

1664. that from you shall not the judge of

1665. all the earth do what is just and the

1666. Lord said if I find it Sodom 50

1667. righteous in the city I will spare

1668. the whole place for their sake

1669. Abraham answered and said behold I

1670. have undertaken to speak to the Lord I

1671. who am but dust and ashes suppose

1672. five of the 50 are righteous are

1673. lacking will you destroy the whole

1674. city for lack of five and the Lord

1675. said I will not destroy it if I find

1676. 45 there again Abraham spoke to the

1677. Lord and said suppose 40 are found

1678. there and the Lord answered for the

1679. sake of 40 I will not do it then

1680. Abraham said oh let not the Lord be

1681. angry and I will speak suppose 30 are

1682. found there and the Lord answered I

1683. will not do it if I find 30 there

1684. Abraham said behold I have undertaken

1685. to speak to the Lord suppose 20 are

1686. found there and the Lord answered for

1687. the sake of 20 I will not destroy it

1688. then Abraham said oh let not the Lord

1689. be angry and I will speak again but

1690. this one suppose 10 are found there and

1691. the Lord answered for the sake of 10 I

1692. will not destroy it and the Lord went

1693. his way when he had finished speaking to

1694. Abraham and Abraham returned to his

1695. place I did a bit of an inner internet

1696. search and I'm not sure if this is

1697. connected to it but in modern Judaism

1698. and it's been mod this for for quite a

1699. few centuries you need 10 men for

1700. synagogue you have less than 10 you

  1701. don't have a synagogue and I don't

1702. know if it's connected to this at all but

1703. the idea that you need that the 10 that

1704. one righteous community praying and

1705. bearing witness in that community so

1706. what's going on here does God does

1707. Abraham change God's mind one of the

1708. biggest crises I had in my young

1709. Christian life and it affected me for

1710. quite a few months and I wasn't able to

1711. find any help when I talked to

1712. Christians about it was that I was

1713. challenged by I guess what I would now

1714. know to be naturalist philosophers people

1715. who believe that really all there is is

1716. what science can discover if you can't

1717. weigh it if you can't measure it if you

1718. can't do scientific experiments on it it's

1719. not real and in this world where there's

1720. matter and there's energy things just

1721. happen it's like a billiard ball the you

1722. hit the ball and the ball hits other

1723. balls and the balls all move around and

1724. and they hit different things and and it's

1725. just cause and effect and that effect

1726. becomes a cause and I might think that I

1727. have free will and I might think that I've

1728. chosen to be a Christian but it's just all

1729. cause and effect and and that I almost

1730. lost my faith over it and it's in effect on

1731. one level it's the dominant philosophy

1732. underlying all of Canada although most

1733. people haven't really thought through what

1734. it actually means if it's true if there's

1735. only cause and effect which becomes

1736. another cause it's just really an endless

1737. series of causes and all of the causes are

1738. material and physical if that's the case

1739. there is no freedom and in a sense there

1740. is no you and if there is no freedom and

1741. there is no you life doesn't have any

1742. meaning and really ultimately have

1743. absolutely no type of dignity and that in

1744. fact is a problem and usually in

1745. naturalistic philosophers and thinkers they

1746. try to get around it in some way one of

1747. the things that they'll try to do now is

1748. create things like multiverses and stuff

1749. like that but it doesn't get around that

1750. fundamental problem that if a human being

1751. is really just a biological organism and

1752. biology can be reduced to chemistry and

1753. chemistry can be reduced to physics and

1754. it's just cause and effect then you really

1755. have no particular identity and you have

1756. no freedom and you have ultimately no

1757. meaning to your life and no type of a of

1758. worth and of course there's other ways of

1759. thinking about this in the world but you

1760. know the other two ways of thinking about

1761. it in the world apart from the Christian

1762. one have their own types of problems

1763. that if you take seriously ideas of karma

1764. and death and rebirth and and the fact

1765. that there was originally some type of

1766. cosmic accident or tragedy that left to

1767. distinct entities but every distinct

1768. entity is really ultimately just not the way

1769. things should be there should just be the

1770. one and at some point in time we will

1771. return to the one and if if we don't

1772. really have an identity and and and we do

1773. have some type of a of dignity in the

1774. sense that we do different things and it

1775. might move but it all it's doing is

1776. moving us towards that day when we lose

1777. who we are and we become like one and and

1778. in our for our Muslim friends I mean

1779. obviously people live better than this

1780. because you see on one level at at a very

1781. deep level we know that we have that

1782. there should be meaning to life and we

1783. know that we have some freedom and we

1784. know that we should have dignity even if

1785. that doesn't fit with our religions and

1786. our philosophies and and in Islam you

1787. just have divine command Allah just wills

1788. it it's written on who you are when you

1789. are born what your destiny is going to be

1790. and everything is just the will of Allah

1791. but here we see and and here I mean it's

1792. not obviously talking about the Trinity

1793. but the the Christian you know what when

1794. Jesus the Jesus brings to clarity what

1795. the Old Testament teaches and Jesus

1796. reveals how he is both God and the Father

1797. is God and both are God but there's not

1798. two gods but just one God and then as he

1799. talks about the Holy Spirit in such a way

1800. that it's very clear that the Holy Spirit

1801. is God and the Holy Spirit isn't Jesus and

  1802. there's just ultimately there's ultimately

1803. only one God but there's these three

1804. persons you actually only in Christianity

1805. do you have at a very very very deep

1806. level this picture of difference and

1807. freedom and action but without there being

1808. any sin and it's this Trinity that creates

1809. human beings and he creates us in his

1810. image and so what you see working out in

1811. here is that God gives the dignity of

1812. causality and provides the context that

1813. human beings can have true causality and

1814. not just causality in the physical world

1815. and the mental world and the emotional

1816. world but also in the spiritual world that

1817. that God gives human beings we have a mind

1818. we have a soul and our soul is enfleshed

1819. or another way to look at it would be that

1820. our flesh our physical biology is ensouled two

1821. different ways of saying the same thing and

1822. that means we are part of a world of cause and

1823. effect and flow but there's always part of us that

1824. part made in the image of God and likeness of

1825. God which is separate but connected not

1826. completely determined that really does have

1827. freedom that's made in the image of God and

1828. part of the way that God created human beings

1829. was that human beings would have the dignity

1830. the worth of being able to cause things to be

1831. to create to choose to build to plant to dance to sing to flourish and that goes not just for the physical world but for the emotional world the mental world and the spiritual world in prayer

1832. and God in his sovereignty

  1833. his will

1834. in a sense is intermingled without ever diminishing his will at any time whatsoever

1835. is intermingled with our prayers

1836. as he is sovereign over the entire earth

1837. and that is what's being seen here very very powerfully and simply in this very simple dialogue

1838. between Abraham and the Lord Abraham praying to the Lord and what we see here is that the Lord not only is not anger driven but that he's truth driven

1839. he's justice driven he's goodness driven but he's also concerned with mercy

1840. now Abraham has made a mistake

1841. his mistake is to think that the distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous is the distinction between persons

  1842. and that's a mistake

1843. it's not that I'm righteous and one of you is unrighteous

1844. but the Bible as it goes on and as more is revealed and as more is revealed in

1845. in Genesis and Exodus and all the way into the New Testament

1846. the line between the righteous and the unrighteous does not go between people

1847. does not go between people groups

1848. it does not go between nations

1849. it goes right down every single human being

1850. there are parts of me that are very very good

1851. and made in the image of God

1852. and there are parts of me that are very very bad and wicked

1853. and Abraham could only conceive

1854. of God coming down to wipe away

1855. but the very fact that this story shows mercy points to that greater time in the future

1856. when God would come down and live amongst us

1857. and his name was Emmanuel

1858. he came and dwelt and lived amongst us

1859. not so that we would be destroyed

1860. but that in his life and in his death upon the cross

  1861. justice and mercy meet

  1862. they kiss

  1863. they embrace

1864. and you see the perfect justice of God

1865. and the perfect mercy of God

1866. and the perfect goodness of God

1867. and even amidst all of the blood and the pain

  1868. the beauty of God

1869. God the Son of God

1870. Emmanuel coming and dwelling amongst us in our mess

  1871. and seeing

1872. eye to eye our great need

  1873. and his response

  1874. is to die

  1875. his response

  1876. is to have mercy

1877. and so the justice of God is met

1878. the things that I have done wrong

1879. that would demand God's justice and payment

  1880. are paid by him

1881. and his mercy is met

  1882. and that it's

1883. I am clothed with his righteousness

  1884. as a gift

  1885. and you see then

  1886. that it's not

  1887. that we practice hospitality

1888. and if we practice hospitality

  1889. and hospitality enough

1890. that maybe God will like us

1891. and it's not that maybe

1892. if we practice justice enough

1893. that God would like us

1894. or that we practice mercy enough

1895. that God would like us

1896. or if we pray enough

1897. that God would like us

1898. but that when we understand

  1899. that Emmanuel came down

  1900. that justice and mercy

  1901. in a sense

  1902. meet on the cross

  1903. and that

  1904. I

1905. who have a part of me

  1906. that is unrighteous

1907. that I cannot fix for myself

1908. that that is dealt with

  1909. by a pure

  1910. and utter gift

  1911. of God

1912. that is given to me

1913. as I reflect upon that

1914. and as I receive that gift

  1915. that gift

  1916. forms me

  1917. to be more hospitable

  1918. it forms me

1919. not to live in fear

  1920. of other people

  1921. but to be hospitable

  1922. it forms me

  1923. to show mercy

  1924. it forms me

  1925. to pray

1926. even for very bad people

  1927. it forms me

  1928. to pray

  1929. even for the impossible

  1930. why?

  1931. God showed hospitality

  1932. to me

1933. when he died upon the cross

1934. God showed mercy to me

1935. when he died for me

  1936. on the cross

  1937. God

  1938. did something

  1939. for a bad person

  1940. like me

1941. when he died upon the cross

  1942. and God did something

  1943. impossible

  1944. for me

1945. when he died upon the cross

1946. and he brought a sinner

  1947. like myself

  1948. to himself

  1949. and so that

  1950. as this gift

  1951. of Emmanuel

  1952. becomes more clear

  1953. to us

  1954. this time

  1955. when the true

  1956. and greater

  1957. story

  1958. the true

  1959. and greater story

  1960. of Genesis 18

  1961. when Jesus walks

  1962. amongst us

  1963. is Emmanuel

  1964. as we realize

  1965. the gift

  1966. of who he is

  1967. it forms us

  1968. it forms us

  1969. he was hospitable

  1970. to us

1971. I am to be hospitable

  1972. out of his hospitality

  1973. he has shown mercy

  1974. to me

  1975. out of his mercy

1976. I am to show mercy

  1977. out of his care

  1978. for the bad

  1979. I am to care

  1980. for the bad

  1981. out of his doing

  1982. the impossible

  1983. I am to pray

  1984. for the impossible

  1985. that is the gospel

1986. that's how it forms us

  1987. please stand

1988. let us bow our heads

  1989. in prayer

  1990. father

  1991. if there are any

  1992. here who are

  1993. listening

  1994. who would not

  1995. have described

  1996. themselves as

  1997. Christians

  1998. and father

  1999. ask that your

  2000. holy spirit

  2001. would move

  2002. and work

  2003. in their lives

  2004. to help them

  2005. to bow

  2006. the knee

  2007. to you

  2008. and to ask

  2009. Jesus to be

  2010. their savior

  2011. and their lord

  2012. and father

  2013. for us

  2014. father

  2015. you know

  2016. we can get

  2017. very upset

  2018. about the badness

  2019. of the world

  2020. we can

  2021. wish that we

  2022. could just have

  2023. rose colored glasses

  2024. to no longer

  2025. see the world

  2026. and the badness

  2027. but father

  2028. we thank you

  2029. for stories

  2030. like this

  2031. we ask lord

  2032. that as we

  2033. deal with the

  2034. badness of the world

  2035. and the goodness

  2036. of the world

  2037. as we

  2038. that father

  2039. that it's not

  2040. be that we

  2041. want rose colored

  2042. glasses

  2043. but that we want

  2044. the gospel

  2045. to be more real

  2046. to our hearts

  2047. so that we

  2048. can see the world

  2049. as it really is

  2050. but as we see

  2051. the world

  2052. as it really is

  2053. it creates

  2054. within us

  2055. as we reflect

  2056. upon the gospel

  2057. this desire

  2058. to be hospitable

  2059. to see mercy

  2060. to see justice

  2061. to see goodness

  2062. to pray

  2063. even for the worst

  2064. to pray

  2065. even for that

  2066. which is impossible

  2067. and father

  2068. mindful of

  2069. of how long

  2070. Sarah and Abraham

  2071. had to work

  2072. to wait

  2073. that you would

  2074. grant us

  2075. a great patience

  2076. and persistence

  2077. in prayer

  2078. that we would

  2079. not just pray

  2080. for an hour

  2081. or for a day

  2082. or a week

  2083. but that you

  2084. would put it

  2085. within our hearts

  2086. to be people

  2087. who would pray

  2088. in some cases

  2089. for years

  2090. and for decades

  2091. father form us

  2092. and shape us

  2093. by the gospel

  2094. the gospel

  2095. that we have received

  2096. and we ask this

2097. in the name of Jesus

  2098. your son

  2099. and our savior

  2100. amen

  2101. and the آf

  2102. the gospel

  2103. but that we offer

  2104. and the winding

  2105. on the šil

  2106. and your side

  2107. and our savior

  2108. to find them

  2109. so that we have

  2110. opportunity

  2111. to discrete

  2112. the captain

  2113. and he stated

  2114. no behind

  2115. but no behind

  2116. that we are

  2117. we have

  2118. the clang

  2119. that's

  2120. again

  2121. and our speaker

  2122. with the

  2123. family

  2124. and the people

  2125. who already

  2126. ойд

  2127. and then

  2128. and then

  2129. you

  2130. have
