  1. so we have lots of very cute little kids in the church today which is very very it's a very good

  2. thing and it's also Father's Day by the way which I guess I'll have to say Happy Father's Day in

  3. case I forget to say it later on which would be quite likely to happen with me one of the things

  4. which is interesting about young children obviously Caspar is not even close to that

  5. is that at some point in time they start to become morally aware and are able to make wrong choices

  6. like very self-consciously wrong choices I don't know and those of you who have parents of young

  7. kids you can maybe have a bit of a discussion about when that comes I think of it somewhere in

  8. their twos you'll have a time when the child is you know just playing around and and maybe there's a

  9. something on a table or a counter that they're not supposed to touch and they go wandering over

  10. to it and and you say to them we'll just call call it we'll pretend it's a boy and his name is Bobby

  11. and you say to to say to Bobby Bobby you know you're not supposed to touch that and and here's the up

  12. until then you know they just do whatever they're doing they're just little little tiny kids just

  13. doing whatever sort of pops into their heads and sometimes weird things pop into their heads or cute

  14. things but this time you say you know Bobby you know you're not supposed to touch that and Bobby

  15. stops and looks at the parent like he he looks at the parent and you say again to the child Bobby

  16. don't touch that you know you're not supposed to and Bobby looks at the parent and then Bobby touches the

  17. object and you know that Bobby has chosen to do something which is wrong and that's something which

  18. happens to every child in fact if you met a parent who said that never happened to my child

  19. you might not say anything to the parent but inwardly you know that that parent's just deluded

  20. because the fact of the matter is is that there always comes a time when a young child will

  21. gratuitously no it's a big word but gratuitously freely just choose to do something that's wrong

  22. now last week I said a couple of things about the problem of evil usually conceived as the problem

  23. of why evil exists in the world and what God does about it but prior to that there's a far more there's

  24. a far deeper profound human question that most of us turn our eyes away from in terms of thinking about

  25. and that is why is it that you and I gratuitously choose to do things that are wrong

  26. like if one of you says you don't do it that just shows you're not self-aware

  27. but the fact the matter is is that every single one of us even the best

  28. will have times when we know it's wrong there's no nothing forcing us it's not like you know I don't

  29. know we have to steal because we're starving to death it's you know not because we have guns pointed

  30. to our head and you know we have to make some terrible moral choice or anything like that

  31. there are fact every single one of us have times where we just freely knowingly choose to do something

  32. that's wrong we do why is that

  33. what is it about human beings

  34. that that is part of what makes a human being a human being at least today

  35. part of the problem is that it's hard for us to think about this and come to an answer to it

  36. without being demoralized without thinking that there's just it's it's hard for us to bear the

  37. idea that there's just something in us which is just broken in a way like that and and so it's

  38. demoralizing so we don't we don't think about it and most of the time what we just do is we

  39. pretend it's not there it's not an elephant in the room and and or we pretend that it's not really

  40. something that happens to us very often because we're very good at making excuses for the wrong

  41. that we do and don't want to acknowledge that we have an opportunity to forgive and we choose not to

  42. forgive we have an opportunity to let go of resentment and we choose not to let go of resentment we have a

  43. chance to to to to help another person and we just choose not to do it and we don't like to

  44. that's not something that we like to think about as being true to us the story that we're going to

  45. look at today and it's so i invite you to turn in your bibles to genesis chapter 20 and as i i sort

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  46. of said in my prayer it's a on the surface it's a very very simple story but it's actually some simple

  47. stories can be very deep and profound um i know i might be igniting a few people by saying this but

  48. the fact the matter is is that depth psychologists like freud and and jung have often gone to some

  49. of these very ancient stories in the book of genesis to mine their depths in modern days

  50. jordan peterson's lectures on some of these stories have gotten in the millions in terms of views

  51. have seen in a sense the profound depth in these very simple stories we're going to look at one of

  52. these very simple stories and it points the way forward to thinking about the evil that we do the

  53. wrong that we do in a way that won't lead us to pretend and won't demoralize us so if you turn in

  54. your bibles to genesis chapter 20 and um last week i i borrowed something that i learned from an australian

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  55. anglican scholar by the name of john woodhouse telling the story in terms of scenes and i think i'm

  56. going to do that again this week so scene number one trusting in lies to protect you that's what

  57. scene number one is called trusting in lies to protect you verses one and two from there uh that is uh

  58. where he'd been like by the tree and and sort of close to sodom and and gomorrah from there abraham

  59. journeyed toward the territory of the negev uh he's sort of going south closer to egypt

  60. from there abraham journeyed toward the territory of the negev and lived between kadesh and shir and he

  61. sojourned in gerar which was an important uh center for caravan routes uh where there was water etc

  62. and so people would stop there was an important uh resting spot in a in a city so but back so he he

  63. sojourned in gerar and abraham said of sarah his wife she is my sister

  64. and abimelech the king of gerar sent and took sarah so the implication here is that uh abimelech

  65. uh takes sarah to be one of his wives to be in his harem and what we see here right off the bat

  66. is that what abraham has done is he's lied in a way to protect himself we're going to discover in a

  67. few scenes why it is that he in his own self-consciousness why he is that he chose to lie

  68. but one of the things which is very interesting here i've talked to many people over the years

  69. who've said you know if god really wanted me to know him why doesn't he just reveal himself to me

  70. in a way which is very blatant and obvious and if he just revealed himself to me then i would believe in

  71. him well the fact of the matter is is that the the bible shows time and time and time again that that

  72. is rarely true what has just gone on before this is the most an un just a spectacular and in in many

  73. ways horrific demonstration of the existence of of god with the destruction of sodom and gomorrah

  74. with the land being destroyed and and the smoke going up into into the heavens and abraham

  75. knew that god was going to do this and and god did it and and very few people on the history of

  76. the planet have ever had a more remarkable demonstration of the existence of god and yet

  77. very shortly after this abraham is not trusting in god to protect him but decides that he will trust in

  78. lies and deception for him to be protected

  79. and in fact one of many of us could start to wonder and this is going to be one of the main questions as

  80. this story progresses if abraham lies and deceives to protect himself why on earth would god choose him

  81. as somebody special

  82. like why would god choose a liar

  83. to be the the founder of the promised people like that

  84. that is actually wrong like that's just wrong that god would do that

  85. scene two the lord intervenes look at verse three

  86. but god came to abimelech in a dream by night and said to him behold you are a dead man

  87. because actually it's funny that like that's what it says in the in hebrew you are a dead man

  88. because of the woman whom you have taken for she is a man's wife now abimelech had not approached her

  89. in other words they hadn't had sexual relations so he said lord will you kill an innocent people

  90. did he not himself say to me she is my sister and she herself said he is my brother

  91. in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my and the innocence of my hands i have done this

  92. so the lord intervenes to speak to abimelech in a dream and one of the things that we discover here

  93. is that not only has abraham lied but sarah has lied they've been partners in lying and deceiving

  94. now there's another big question here which some of you might not know but others

  95. who've been following along knows and that is this sarah is 89 years old

  96. now i hope to get to that age and probably in my own eyes i'm still going to be a good looking chap

  97. at 89 but there's a type of obvious question why on earth did abimelech choose an 89 year old woman

  98. to be his wife so just very very briefly a part of what's going on here in the story is this

  99. the story is going to maintain time and time and time again that the birth of isaac in fulfillment

  100. to the promises of god's saying that he's going to start to bless the nations through this line

  101. it's going to be shown time and time again that abraham and sarah contributed nothing that is

  102. completely and utterly a miracle of god in fact not only that that abraham and sarah continually

  103. sabotage what god wants to do which is what they're doing right here that what's going to happen

  104. abraham leaves and now he can't take his wife with him because now she's with abimelech how's how on

  105. earth is isaac the promised child of abraham going to happen so they actually constantly act in ways

  106. which undermines god doing something so it's going to be very very clear that only god was able to

  107. accomplish this the second the second thing is and and this is probably part of it is that god's desiring

  108. god's plan to create a line through which the entire world will be blessed and which salvation

  109. will come he seems to have acted in a way so that many of these early patriarchs live far longer lives

  110. than they normally had but there's still a bit of a mystery here the two stories pre previous to this

  111. it takes very very clear that sarah has gotten too old she she know she's uh she's uh she's menopausal

  112. post-menopausal she's she's old so i'm just going to suggest something here you can take with it as you

  113. want you can discuss it over coffee you can think george is completely and utterly ridiculous that's

  114. fine but abimelech wants to get married to sarah and i wonder if some of modern fiction is pointing to

  115. what maybe has happened here that the miracle that's going on is god reverses sarah's aging

  116. in the very next story the baby will be born and i wonder if what's happening is that sarah is in a

  117. sense going backwards in time from 89 to looking young enough and being young enough to bear a child

  118. that's pure speculation on my part you can do with it as you will all i'm trying to do is piece

  119. together he chose a woman to marry and in the very next story she gives birth take with it as you want

  120. the next scene is god's clear but confusing message verses six and seven then god said to abimelech in

  121. the dream yes i know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart and it was i who kept you

  122. from sinning against me therefore i did not let you touch her now then return the man's wife

  123. here's the here's the here's the confusing bit for he is a prophet so that he will pray for you

  124. and you shall live but if you do not return her know that you shall surely die you and all were yours

  125. now i'm not going to spend very much time on it for some people it's a shock that god might do

  126. something that might he might kill i guess all i want to do is that part of what's going on here

  127. and it's going to continue throughout the rest of the bible is to try to help us to understand that

  128. god is not a labradoodle

  129. god is not a labradoodle he's not just a tame little pet that will follow you around god is a

  130. consuming fire he creates all things out of nothing he sustains all things out of nothing

  131. heaven and earth flees from his presence he is the transcendent and imminent god he is uncreated

  132. and needs no environment and if god was to reveal himself fully and completely to us it would unmake us

  133. and that is who the true and living god actually is

  134. but the other part which is this is the prophet like how could god choose abraham to be a prophet

  135. he lies he's not good does this mean that god sort of enables his favorites does god sort of reward

  136. some people for living lies of deception and it's going to even get worse as the story progresses

  137. the yuck factor of abraham and sarah is going to increase once we get a couple of scenes down

  138. but first scene four the virtuous pagans look at verse eight so abimelech rose early in the morning

  139. and called all his servants and told them all these things and the men were very much afraid

  140. then abimelech called abraham and said to him what have you done to us and how have i sinned against you

  141. that you have brought on me in my kingdom a great sin you have done to me things that ought not to be done

  142. and abimelech said to abraham what did you see that you did this thing

  143. now what abraham what abimelech is doing here is he's being very virtuous he in fact does fear god

  144. to the extent that he understands god uh he's making clear that he would not have taken another man's wife

  145. and he wants to make sure that there's a public airing of this so there is no appearance of evil

  146. and there's going to be restitution now by the way this is something that we need desperately in our

  147. country do we have in fact and i'm not picking on politics particular politicians do we have

  148. a clear airing of things which they have done wrong i have done something which is wrong i apologize

  149. and if necessary i will resign this is a consistent message to our country and it's not just to

  150. politicians but to people in churches and business and communities where in fact you do not have this

  151. very clear public acknowledgement that something has gone on and a desire to clear it to clear the air

  152. to acknowledge responsibility to make restitution to make very clear what the right path is and what we

  153. see here is that the pagans are virtuous and abraham and sarah are not

  154. and we in canada today could learn from the virtuous pagans

  155. in gerar

  156. and once again we wondered to ourselves why didn't god choose abimelech rather than abraham

  157. why didn't he choose a virtuous man

  158. rather than abraham and sarah

  159. well as i said it gets worse for abraham and sarah

  160. next scene scene five is deception and blame shifting

  161. verses 11 to 13

  162. so abraham answers abimelech's questions abraham said i did it because i thought

  163. there is no fear of god at all in this place

  164. and they will kill me

  165. because of my wife

  166. besides

  167. she is indeed my sister

  168. the daughter of my father

  169. the daughter of my father

  170. though not the daughter of my mother

  171. and she became my wife

  172. and when god

  173. caused me to wander from my father's house

  174. i said to her

  175. this is the kindness you must do to me

  176. at every place

  177. to which we come

  178. say of me

  179. he is my brother

  180. we see here the seeds of prejudice

  181. don't we

  182. the problem with

  183. i don't know

  184. the irish

  185. i'm irish

  186. the problem with the irish

  187. if you go to ireland

  188. they're just always looking to try to steal your stuff

  189. or take your stuff

  190. or just just pick your

  191. pick your racial group

  192. or your ethnic group

  193. or your

  194. your your racial group

  195. it's a standard part of prejudice

  196. that everybody there

  197. they're just going to want to rip you off

  198. they're just going to take advantage of you

  199. and here we see abraham's prejudice

  200. despite the fact that the pagans in fact

  201. are more virtuous

  202. and the other thing is

  203. it's not as

  204. in in in the original language

  205. when he says

  206. and when god caused me to wander

  207. what he's doing is blame shifting

  208. he's saying listen

  209. it's not my fault

  210. god caused me to wander

  211. and because god caused me to wander

  212. i had to do all of these things

  213. to protect myself

  214. he's blame shifting

  215. trying to pass away his responsibility

  216. for his freely chosen

  217. doing of something which is wrong

  218. and now even when he's confronted

  219. he doesn't accept responsibility

  220. but in fact doubles down on it

  221. and blames god for it

  222. and then once again

  223. how on earth could they pick

  224. abraham and sarah

  225. he married his sister

  226. is the bible saying that's all right

  227. like is the bible

  228. saying it's all right

  229. to marry your sister

  230. you might not always have been clear about it

  231. occasionally i've made these little references

  232. like if you pick something like

  233. the lord of the rings

  234. it's six books

  235. and if you were just to try to

  236. to read one story

  237. in the in the in the in the first book

  238. and not read the rest of the story

  239. you're not going to be able to interpret it correctly

  240. uh... for instance

  241. not giving any spoilers

  242. if you just took

  243. if you skip the beginning

  244. and and end of book one

  245. and you just read a few of boromer's speeches

  246. you might understand

  247. you might believe that he's a

  248. a far better man than he actually was

  249. but he actually does want to steal the ring

  250. and and the understanding

  251. that the depth of the problem

  252. only becomes more clear

  253. as you read all six books

  254. and and genesis is book one

  255. of a five book series

  256. all written fundamentally

  257. ultimately by moses

  258. uh... genesis exodus leviticus numbers

  259. and deuteronomy

  260. are a five book series

  261. and so if you just look at this story

  262. if this was the only story

  263. i'd have to say god says it's all right

  264. for a man

  265. for a guy to marry his sister

  266. but if you read all five of the books

  267. it becomes very clear

  268. that what abraham and sarah had done

  269. is wrong in god's eyes

  270. i'm sorry it's not going to be up there on the thing

  271. but if you have your own bibles

  272. if you turn to leviticus

  273. i'll just sort of show it to you

  274. leviticus chapter 18

    Leviticus 18 chapter mention

  275. uh... verse 9

  276. and verse 11

  277. uh... it says this

  278. leviticus uh... chapter 18

  279. verse 9

  280. um... you shall not uncover

  281. the nakedness of your sister

  282. your father's daughter

  283. or your mother's daughter

  284. whether brought up in the family

  285. or another in another home

  286. in other words

  287. you shouldn't have

  288. it's another way of saying

  289. sexual relations

  290. and then if you go down

  291. to verse 11

  292. you shall not uncover

  293. the nakedness of your father's

  294. wife's daughter

  295. brought up in your father's family

  296. since she is your sister

  297. another language of sexual knowing

  298. it's forbidden

  299. and then again

  300. in deuteronomy chapter 27

    Deuteronomy 27:22

  301. verse 22

  302. deuteronomy chapter 27

    Deuteronomy 27:22

  303. verse 22

  304. cursed be anyone who lies

  305. with his sister

  306. whether the daughter of his father

  307. or the daughter of his mother

  308. and all the people shall say

  309. amen

  310. so the bible makes it clear

  311. that abraham

  312. and sarah

  313. are doing something

  314. that is wrong

  315. in god's eyes

  316. once again

  317. how on earth

  318. are abraham and sarah worthy

  319. like what's going on

  320. with god

  321. scene six

  322. abimelech

  323. makes

  324. right

  325. turn to

  326. verses

  327. 14 to 16

  328. then abimelech

  329. took sheep

  330. and oxen

  331. and male servants

  332. and female servants

  333. and gave them to abraham

  334. and returned sarah

  335. his wife

  336. to him

  337. and abimelech said

  338. behold my land is before you

  339. dwell where it pleases you

  340. to sarah he said

  341. behold

  342. now just notice this little dig

  343. abimelech

  344. is making

  345. a very very

  346. even though

  347. he can argue

  348. that he's not been guilty

  349. of anything

  350. he wants to make sure

  351. there's no appearance

  352. of evil

  353. so he's going to make

  354. a gift

  355. of lots

  356. of gold

  357. and servants

  358. and he's saying

  359. there's no hard feelings

  360. the whole land

  361. is before you

  362. I want you

  363. to be able to stay

  364. but he gets in

  365. the little dig

  366. notice the little dig

  367. verse 15

  368. behold the land

  369. my land is before you

  370. dwell where it pleases you

  371. verse 16

  372. to sarah

  373. he said

  374. behold I have given

  375. your brother

  376. not husband

  377. I've given you

  378. a brother

  379. a thousand pieces

  380. of silver

  381. it is a sign

  382. of your innocence

  383. in the eyes of all

  384. who are with you

  385. and for everyone

  386. that you

  387. are vindicated

  388. at the expense

  389. to himself

  390. he makes sure

  391. the other person

  392. is vindicated

  393. once again

  394. profound lessons

  395. for how we should

  396. live today

  397. and then finally

  398. the final scene

  399. entitled

  400. why on earth

  401. Abraham

  402. then verse 17

  403. then Abraham

  404. prayed to God

  405. and God healed

  406. Abimelech

  407. and also healed

  408. his wife

  409. and female slaves

  410. so that they

  411. bore children

  412. for the Lord

  413. had closed all the

  414. wombs of the house

  415. of Abimelech

  416. because of Abraham

  417. Sarah's wife

  418. Abraham's prayer

  419. worked

  420. in the sense

  421. that Abraham

  422. prayed

  423. and God said

  424. yes

  425. occasionally

  426. people

  427. when they find out

  428. I'm a minister

  429. they might say

  430. something like

  431. we're having a picnic

  432. this afternoon

  433. if you could do

  434. something

  435. if you could pray

  436. for good weather

  437. I'd really appreciate it

  438. and I always say

  439. I'm in sales

  440. not management

  441. my prayers

  442. don't work any better

  443. than yours

  444. and then I'll usually say

  445. my wife is closer

  446. to management

  447. than I am

  448. maybe you should ask

  449. her to pray

  450. so we tend to have

  451. a thought here though

  452. isn't it

  453. that in fact

  454. that

  455. that

  456. if we're closer

  457. to God

  458. God will answer

  459. our prayers

  460. so

  461. what on earth

  462. is going on here

  463. in this particular story

  464. he prays as a prophet

  465. and God says yes

  466. so

  467. he

  468. it's very easy

  469. to look at this

  470. and say

  471. this is just the problem

  472. with religion

  473. and religious texts

  474. that what goes on

  475. in religion

  476. is that there's

  477. one rule for me

  478. another for thee

  479. that's not just

  480. a problem for religion

  481. it's a problem

  482. in politics

  483. it's a problem

  484. in university faculties

  485. it's a problem

  486. in media establishments

  487. and in businesses

  488. one rule for me

  489. another for thee

  490. and I

  491. as soon as I say that

  492. all of you can think

  493. of instances

  494. where it's the case

  495. but it seems to often

  496. be the case

  497. in religious institutions

  498. one rule for me

  499. another for thee

  500. and how on earth

  501. can you say

  502. George

  503. that God is showing

  504. mercy and grace

  505. to Abraham

  506. if Abraham

  507. has been doing

  508. very very bad things

  509. and it's not

  510. mercy and grace

  511. if it's unjust

  512. or unfair

  513. or wrong

  514. Abraham is

  515. undeserving

  516. and if Abraham

  517. is undeserving

  518. then it's wrong

  519. for God

  520. to favor him

  521. it's

  522. you know

  523. you can't have

  524. mercy and grace

  525. if there's injustice

  526. if there's

  527. favoritism

  528. you can't just

  529. sort of pick

  530. it's just

  531. George

  532. you know

  533. it was bad

  534. if

  535. when Trump

  536. was leaving office

  537. and he lets his crony

  538. he gives last second

  539. you know

  540. get them

  541. out of jail

  542. and declares them

  543. innocent for their cronies

  544. and it'll be just as wrong

  545. if Biden does it

  546. at the end of his term

  547. if in his final week

  548. he just starts taking

  549. all of the guys

  550. who are his golfing buddies

  551. and his campaign donors

  552. and he just makes

  553. their criminal charges

  554. go away

  555. and that's just wrong

  556. and this seems like

  557. that's what's going on here

  558. and it's just wrong

  559. George

  560. and if after reading

  561. the story

  562. you think that

  563. that's a good thing

  564. so I just want to talk

  565. about three types

  566. of things

  567. to try to help us

  568. to understand

  569. why this story

  570. is deep and profound

  571. why it's in the Bible

  572. and here's the first thing

  573. there is

  574. this Bible text

  575. reveals to you

  576. and me

  577. that there is

  578. a natural

  579. or common

  580. there's a natural

  581. spiritual imagination

  582. where there's a natural

  583. religious

  584. intuition

  585. there's something

  586. which is common

  587. to almost all

  588. human beings

  589. about how spiritual

  590. and religious things

  591. should work

  592. it's how our imagination

  593. works

  594. it's a profound

  595. institution

  596. intuition

  597. and it's common

  598. to all

  599. and it's common

  600. to every religion

  601. and in fact

  602. many versions

  603. of Christianity

  604. are in fact

  605. times when

  606. people forget

  607. what the gospel is

  608. and just allow

  609. the natural

  610. religious

  611. spiritual intuition

  612. and imagination

  613. re-read the text

  614. and so Christianity

  615. becomes a form

  616. of this natural

  617. imagination

  618. about how

  619. religion and spirituality

  620. should work

  621. and if you could put up

  622. the first slide

  623. that would be really good

  624. hopefully you can see it

  625. and those of you

  626. watching online

  627. it will be at the bottom

  628. and here it is

  629. I call it the

  630. what do I call it here

  631. I call it the

  632. I think I have the

  633. no I have the right thing

  634. I call it the natural

  635. spiritual imagination

  636. I think I just called it that

  637. and here's the thing

  638. here's how it works

  639. first of all

  640. you start doing better

  641. then you start

  642. being spiritual

  643. or engaging

  644. in spiritual things

  645. and then as you

  646. proceed along

  647. because you're doing

  648. a better and better

  649. you're living a better

  650. and better life

  651. and you're getting better

  652. at doing spiritual

  653. or religious things

  654. you come to the point

  655. where God accepts you

  656. which I guess

  657. we could call

  658. salvation

  659. and you see that

  660. in Christians as well

  661. you have a person

  662. who used to be

  663. a practicing Christian

  664. and they have been

  665. away for a long time

  666. and they start to feel

  667. like maybe they need

  668. to get back to church

  669. but they can't come

  670. back to church

  671. because they've been

  672. living a very bad life

  673. so they talk to you

  674. and they say

  675. you know I've been

  676. living a very bad life

  677. and normally I've been

  678. living a bad life

  679. often I've been

  680. living an unsuccessful life

  681. like my family's

  682. a little bit messed up

  683. my business is

  684. a little bit messed up

  685. and you know

  686. frankly I have

  687. some other problems

  688. and so what we say is

  689. well once I start

  690. to do a little bit better

  691. I'll come to church

  692. and coming to church

  693. and then doing it

  694. and then maybe as well

  695. they'll start to do

  696. a few other things

  697. like this is just

  698. the Christian version

  699. they'll start to read

  700. the Bible

  701. and they'll start to do

  702. a few other types

  703. of things

  704. and then they're

  705. sort of doing better

  706. they're living a better life

  707. and they're more

  708. have a more successful life

  709. and they're going to church

  710. and doing religious things

  711. regularly

  712. and the sense is

  713. that if you do those things

  714. at some point in time

  715. God accepts you

  716. you're saved

  717. and this is not just

  718. this is like

  719. it's the same

  720. you know with

  721. with you know

  722. whether it's Hinduism

  723. and the different types

  724. of rules

  725. that you need to follow

  726. and getting your life

  727. in order

  728. and then the spiritual

  729. practices

  730. so that you're going

  731. to do better

  732. as a Hindu

  733. you know

  734. I've talked to some

  735. people who grew up

  736. Muslim

  737. and they've left

  738. they don't go to the mosque

  739. or anything like that

  740. and they like to drink a lot

  741. which is wrong

  742. and they eat pork sandwiches

  743. which is wrong

  744. and they sort of say

  745. you know

  746. I need to start getting

  747. some of those things

  748. under control

  749. stop watching porn

  750. and stop drinking beer

  751. and once I do

  752. maybe I'll start going

  753. back to the mosque

  754. and I start to do

  755. those religious practices

  756. and it's the common way

  757. that the religious

  758. imagination works

  759. and it's the way

  760. we judge Abraham

  761. right

  762. like how on earth

  763. could Abraham

  764. be God's prophet

  765. why

  766. well because the way

  767. our mind naturally works

  768. is that

  769. if you're going to be

  770. a prophet

  771. like that's like

  772. a really high level

  773. acceptance by God

  774. so surely you got

  775. to get your life

  776. in order

  777. and then after that

  778. you got to be doing

  779. the religious practices

  780. and if you're doing

  781. all of those things

  782. then eventually

  783. you're going to be able

  784. to be sort of

  785. like a prophet

  786. like high up

  787. up here

  788. because that's just

  789. the way it works

  790. you do

  791. God

  792. you don't choose

  793. a prophet

  794. a guy who

  795. married his sister

  796. like that's just

  797. that will never happen

  798. that's just

  799. that goes against

  800. how we understand

  801. religion and spirituality

  802. it goes against

  803. our imagination

  804. it goes against

  805. our intuitions

  806. it's just wrong

  807. and it's wrong

  808. whether it's

  809. it's a bespoke

  810. spirituality

  811. you know

  812. whether it's

  813. it's a mystical thing

  814. whether it's

  815. Buddhism

  816. Hinduism

  817. whether it's

  818. it's Islam

  819. you know

  820. whether it's

  821. many forms

  822. of Christianity

  823. and and

  824. and one of the

  825. reasons in our

  826. culture

  827. many people

  828. are rejecting

  829. religion

  830. is because

  831. they look at

  832. that

  833. and and they

  834. and they just

  835. say

  836. well this doesn't

  837. just doesn't

  838. work

  839. you know

  840. because fact

  841. the matter

  842. is

  843. that

  844. I know

  845. because you see

  846. there's an extra

  847. thing to that

  848. that this is

  849. what should happen

  850. in our culture

  851. is that

  852. okay

  853. you know

  854. I've lived a messy

  855. type of life

  856. and you know

  857. my job's not going

  858. very well

  859. and my you know

  860. there's problems

  861. in my marriage

  862. and all of that

  863. I'm going to start

  864. getting some control

  865. over that

  866. so I'm starting to do

  867. better

  868. now that I'm doing

  869. better

  870. I can go to the mosque

  871. I can go to the temple

  872. I can go to the church

  873. and and after I start

  874. to do that

  875. and get involved

  876. in that

  877. now I'm actually

  878. connected to God

  879. and the result of that

  880. is going to be

  881. that God is now

  882. going to take care

  883. of me

  884. and bless me

  885. and what often

  886. happens is

  887. then you get

  888. the cancer diagnosis

  889. for your mom

  890. then you don't get

  891. the promotion

  892. then you're

  893. the stocks

  894. that you invested

  895. in go

  896. go belly up

  897. and and and now

  898. you're mad at God

  899. because good grief

  900. God

  901. I was doing

  902. my part of the deal

  903. I good grief

  904. I stopped watching

  905. the porn

  906. I stopped drinking

  907. the beer

  908. I'm going to church

  909. and now this happens

  910. like

  911. God

  912. you let down

  913. your part of the deal

  914. the second thing

  915. the problem

  916. there's a big problem

  917. and the big problem

  918. is what I began

  919. the sermon with

  920. the mystery

  921. of your wrongdoing

  922. the mystery

  923. of your wrongdoing

  924. like

  925. what

  926. why is it

  927. why is it

  928. that you can

  929. have an opportunity

  930. you get a phone call

  931. and somebody says

  932. I'd really like

  933. to take

  934. pick you up

  935. I'd love to treat

  936. you to a good meal

  937. buy a couple

  938. of beers

  939. have a really

  940. good afternoon

  941. and you say

  942. no because

  943. I'm going to

  944. watch porn

  945. like

  946. I mean

  947. you know

  948. it's wrong

  949. like

  950. why would

  951. you do that

  952. like

  953. good grief

  954. you have

  955. your good friend

  956. just said

  957. he'll take you out

  958. pay for your meal

  959. you'll have a really

  960. good time

  961. like that sounds

  962. wonderful

  963. like why would

  964. you gratuitously

  965. do the other thing

  966. and you

  967. you can multiply

  968. like

  969. why is it

  970. that we do

  971. things like that

  972. but why is it

  973. that the natural

  974. religious

  975. spiritual

  976. imagination

  977. pretends

  978. that that

  979. part of

  980. our doing

  981. wrong

  982. doesn't exist

  983. because the fact

  984. the matter

  985. is

  986. that we

  987. sometimes

  988. gratuitously

  989. choose

  990. what is

  991. wrong

  992. and no

  993. amount

  994. of depth

  995. therapy

  996. changes

  997. that

  998. no

  999. amount

  1000. of behavior

  1001. modification

  1002. changes

  1003. that

  1004. no amount

  1005. of finding

  1006. coaches

  1007. who can

  1008. give you

  1009. techniques

  1010. about

  1011. human

  1012. behavior

  1013. that

  1014. doesn't

  1015. change

  1016. it

  1017. no amount

  1018. of spiritual

  1019. practices

  1020. removes

  1021. it

  1022. and

  1023. given

  1024. the fact

  1025. that we

  1026. have a

  1027. part of

  1028. us

  1029. that just

  1030. gratuitously

  1031. do

  1032. something

  1033. which

  1034. is

  1035. wrong

  1036. it

  1037. means

  1038. that the

  1039. natural

  1040. spiritual

  1041. imagination

  1042. is

  1043. doomed

  1044. it

  1045. will

  1046. never

  1047. ever

  1048. work

  1049. to

  1050. my

  1051. Buddhist

  1052. friends

  1053. you

  1054. will

  1055. never

  1056. get

  1057. enlightenment

  1058. to

  1059. my

  1060. Hindu

  1061. friends

  1062. you

  1063. will

  1064. never

  1065. stop

  1066. the

  1067. cycle

  1068. of

  1069. life

  1070. and

  1071. rebirth

  1072. never

  1073. to

  1074. my

  1075. Muslim

  1076. friends

  1077. it

  1078. doesn't

  1079. work

  1080. you

  1081. choose

  1082. to

  1083. do

  1084. wrong

  1085. so

  1086. do

  1087. I

  1088. so

  1089. do

  1090. you

  1091. why

  1092. is it

  1093. that we

  1094. cling

  1095. to this

  1096. religious

  1097. model

  1098. and we

  1099. know

  1100. that we

  1101. choose

  1102. wrong

  1103. and you

  1104. see

  1105. what

  1106. happens

  1107. is

  1108. because

  1109. we

  1110. choose

  1111. wrong

  1112. what

  1113. do

  1114. we

  1115. do

  1116. we

  1117. have

  1118. one

  1119. rule

  1120. for

  1121. me

  1122. and

  1123. another

  1124. rule

  1125. for

  1126. thee

  1127. we

  1128. become

  1129. very

  1130. good

  1131. at

  1132. blame

  1133. shifting

  1134. we

  1135. become

  1136. very

  1137. good

  1138. at

  1139. pretend

  1140. and

  1141. what's

  1142. the

  1143. problem

  1144. with

  1145. blame

  1146. shifting

  1147. and

  1148. pretending

  1149. that

  1150. we're

  1151. far

  1152. more

  1153. righteous

  1154. far

  1155. more

  1156. together

  1157. I

  1158. mean

  1159. in

  1160. good

  1161. grief

  1162. if

  1163. there

  1164. is

  1165. ever

  1166. an

  1167. age

  1168. where

  1169. we

  1170. have

  1171. a

  1172. problem

  1173. with

  1174. this

  1175. is

  1176. people

  1177. don't

  1178. actually

  1179. want

  1180. to

  1181. eat

  1182. a

  1183. good

  1184. tasting

  1185. cupcake

  1186. they

  1187. even

  1188. if

  1189. the

  1190. cupcake

  1191. or

  1192. the

  1193. donut

  1194. at

  1195. Tim

  1196. Hortons

  1197. at

  1198. one

  1199. fifth

  1200. the

  1201. price

  1202. is

  1203. twenty

  1204. times

  1205. more

  1206. tasty

  1207. we

  1208. want

  1209. the

  1210. Facebook

  1211. Instagram

  1212. TikTok

  1213. moment

  1214. to make

  1215. it

  1216. look

  1217. like

  1218. things

  1219. are

  1220. good

  1221. and

  1222. what

  1223. happens

  1224. it

  1225. makes

  1226. us

  1227. profoundly

  1228. insecure

  1229. it

  1230. makes

  1231. us

  1232. profoundly

  1233. insecure

  1234. and

  1235. we

  1236. reject

  1237. religion

  1238. because

  1239. it's

  1240. just

  1241. in

  1242. image

  1243. management

  1244. and

  1245. it's

  1246. hard

  1247. for

  1248. us

  1249. to

  1250. think

  1251. of

  1252. the

  1253. fact

  1254. that

  1255. we

  1256. do

  1257. things

  1258. which

  1259. are

  1260. wrong

  1261. without

  1262. being

  1263. profoundly

  1264. demoralizing

  1265. so the

  1266. first thing

  1267. is the

  1268. natural

  1269. way that

  1270. our

  1271. religious

  1272. and

  1273. spiritual

  1274. imagination

  1275. works

  1276. the

  1277. second

  1278. thing

  1279. is the

  1280. mystery

  1281. of our

  1282. wrongdoing

  1283. isn't that

  1284. what we

  1285. see in

  1286. the story

  1287. of

  1288. Abraham

  1289. we

  1290. evaluate

  1291. Abraham

  1292. as being

  1293. unworthy

  1294. because of

  1295. our

  1296. natural

  1297. religious

  1298. imagination

  1299. we

  1300. look at

  1301. Abraham

  1302. and see

  1303. that he

  1304. gratuitously

  1305. chose to

  1306. do what

  1307. was wrong

  1308. the third

  1309. and final

  1310. thing is

  1311. the subversive

  1312. fulfillment

  1313. of the

  1314. gospel

  1315. the subversive

  1316. fulfillment

  1317. of the

  1318. gospel

  1319. by that

  1320. I mean

  1321. is the

  1322. gospel

  1323. subverts

  1324. the

  1325. natural

  1326. religious

  1327. imagination

  1328. but it

  1329. fulfills

  1330. our

  1331. deeper

  1332. desire

  1333. to live

  1334. a life

  1335. that is

  1336. right

  1337. with God

  1338. that's

  1339. transparent

  1340. and honest

  1341. and doesn't

  1342. have to

  1343. pretend

  1344. that there's

  1345. not a

  1346. part of

  1347. us that

  1348. choose to

  1349. do

  1350. what's

  1351. wrong

  1352. it's

  1353. the

  1354. good

  1355. news

  1356. that

  1357. God

  1358. subverts

  1359. but he

  1360. actually

  1361. fulfills

  1362. at a

  1363. deeper

  1364. level

  1365. what we

  1366. desire

  1367. if you

  1368. could put

  1369. up the

  1370. final slide

  1371. the scandalous

  1372. grace of

  1373. the triune

  1374. God

  1375. and the

  1376. way the

  1377. gospel works

  1378. is there's

  1379. an announcement

  1380. Abraham

  1381. you are a

  1382. bad

  1383. man

  1384. George

  1385. you are

  1386. a bad

  1387. man

  1388. but it

  1389. begins

  1390. with God

  1391. accepting me

  1392. as his

  1393. child

  1394. by salvation

  1395. by grace

  1396. I'll explain

  1397. more about

  1398. that in a

  1399. moment

  1400. and then

  1401. it leads

  1402. from that

  1403. to begin

  1404. practicing

  1405. the means

  1406. of grace

  1407. which is

  1408. another way

  1409. a better

  1410. way

  1411. a gospel

  1412. way

  1413. of talking

  1414. about

  1415. religious

  1416. observance

  1417. it's not

  1418. religious

  1419. observance

  1420. it's

  1421. practicing

  1422. the means

  1423. of grace

  1424. and we

  1425. begin

  1426. with being

  1427. accepted

  1428. by God

  1429. completely

  1430. and utterly

  1431. undeserved

  1432. and it's

  1433. from that

  1434. place

  1435. that we

  1436. begin

  1437. to live

  1438. and practice

  1439. the means

  1440. of grace

  1441. and it's

  1442. from that

  1443. place

  1444. that we

  1445. become

  1446. more and

  1447. more convinced

  1448. that it's

  1449. important

  1450. that not only

  1451. do we do

  1452. things like

  1453. justice

  1454. and mercy

  1455. and compassion

  1456. but also

  1457. that we

  1458. write songs

  1459. that are

  1460. good

  1461. and dance

  1462. dances

  1463. that are

  1464. beautiful

  1465. and start

  1466. businesses

  1467. which are

  1468. successful

  1469. and rise

  1470. up in the

  1471. civil service

  1472. not as just

  1473. a person

  1474. who just

  1475. puts everybody

  1476. down

  1477. but to be

  1478. known as a

  1479. man and woman

  1480. of integrity

  1481. that we start

  1482. to do better

  1483. once again

  1484. I don't have

  1485. it in here

  1486. but remember

  1487. that we're

  1488. looking at the

  1489. stories of

  1490. Abraham

  1491. and within

  1492. the stories

  1493. of Abraham

  1494. itself

  1495. there is a

  1496. pointer at

  1497. the very

  1498. very end

  1499. a very

  1500. very famous

  1501. story

  1502. of Abraham

  1503. and we're

  1504. going to be

  1505. looking at it

  1506. in two weeks

  1507. time

  1508. and it's in

  1509. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 22:8

  1510. 22 verse 8

  1511. and it's the

  1512. story of now

  1513. Abraham has his

  1514. child

  1515. and Ishmael

  1516. is gone

  1517. and it's

  1518. only Isaac

  1519. and God

  1520. says to

  1521. Abraham

  1522. I want you

  1523. to take

  1524. your son

  1525. your only

  1526. son whom

  1527. you love

  1528. your only

  1529. son whom

  1530. you love

  1531. and I want

  1532. you to

  1533. take him

  1534. up onto

  1535. the mountain

  1536. and I want

  1537. you to

  1538. kill him

  1539. as a

  1540. sacrifice

  1541. for me

  1542. and Abraham

  1543. goes

  1544. and does

  1545. it

  1546. and there's

  1547. this very

  1548. famous line

  1549. that as

  1550. they're going

  1551. up the

  1552. mountain

  1553. and he's

  1554. gotten rid

  1555. of the

  1556. servants

  1557. it's just

  1558. Abraham

  1559. and his

  1560. son Isaac

  1561. and Abraham

  1562. it's verse 8

  1563. of chapter 22

  1564. at verse 7

  1565. it goes

  1566. and Isaac

  1567. said to his

  1568. father Abraham

  1569. my father

  1570. and Abraham

  1571. said here I

  1572. am my son

  1573. and Isaac

  1574. says behold

  1575. the fire

  1576. and the wood

  1577. but where

  1578. is the lamb

  1579. for the burnt

  1580. offering

  1581. and Abraham's

  1582. famous answer

  1583. is God

  1584. will provide

  1585. for himself

  1586. the lamb

  1587. for the burnt

  1588. offering

  1589. my son

  1590. at the end

  1591. of the story

  1592. after Abraham

  1593. is going to

  1594. go ahead

  1595. and do it

  1596. there is a

  1597. ram that

  1598. is provided

  1599. and God

  1600. reveals to Abraham

  1601. he's not to

  1602. kill his son

  1603. and there's a

  1604. ram

  1605. not the

  1606. lamb

  1607. but a

  1608. ram

  1609. and then

  1610. in the

  1611. other stories

  1612. we're going

  1613. to discover

  1614. in the

  1615. book of

  1616. Exodus

  1617. and in

  1618. the book

  1619. of

  1620. Leviticus

  1621. and Numbers

  1622. and Deuteronomy

  1623. that there's

  1624. to be

  1625. the sacrifices

  1626. but as

  1627. the story

  1628. unfolds

  1629. because there's

  1630. books after

  1631. these first

  1632. five that

  1633. make up

  1634. the 39

  1635. books of

  1636. the Old

  1637. Testament

  1638. there is

  1639. this

  1640. realization

  1641. at a

  1642. deeper and

  1643. deeper

  1644. level

  1645. that the

  1646. mere sacrifice

  1647. of animals

  1648. for a

  1649. human being

  1650. is not

  1651. going to

  1652. be sufficient

  1653. and then

  1654. the very

  1655. first

  1656. historical

  1657. record we

  1658. have of

  1659. Jesus

  1660. is when

  1661. John the

  1662. Baptist

  1663. says at

  1664. the beginning

  1665. of Jesus'

  1666. ministry

  1667. behold

  1668. the lamb

  1669. of God

  1670. that takes

  1671. away

  1672. the sin

  1673. of the

  1674. world

  1675. Abraham's

  1676. not worthy

  1677. by the

  1678. religious

  1679. imagination

  1680. he does

  1681. wrong

  1682. he needs

  1683. grace

  1684. and he

  1685. needs

  1686. grace

  1687. that is

  1688. also

  1689. going

  1690. to be

  1691. at one

  1692. with

  1693. justice

  1694. and how

  1695. is that

  1696. the case

  1697. God looks

  1698. at you

  1699. and he

  1700. looks at

  1701. me

  1702. and I

  1703. cannot

  1704. be

  1705. perfect

  1706. I

  1707. choose

  1708. to do

  1709. wrong

  1710. at different

  1711. times

  1712. and so

  1713. God

  1714. provides

  1715. for me

  1716. in a way

  1717. that I

  1718. cannot

  1719. provide

  1720. for myself

  1721. he

  1722. provides

  1723. I am

  1724. made

  1725. in the

  1726. image

  1727. of God

  1728. he

  1729. takes

  1730. the one

  1731. of whom

  1732. every human

  1733. being is

  1734. made in

  1735. the image

  1736. of

  1737. and that

  1738. one

  1739. who

  1740. every one

  1741. of us

  1742. is in

  1743. the image

  1744. of

  1745. he takes

  1746. flesh

  1747. and becomes

  1748. human

  1749. being

  1750. and he

  1751. lives

  1752. amongst us

  1753. he becomes

  1754. my representative

  1755. who can

  1756. better be

  1757. my representative

  1758. than he

  1759. whose image

  1760. I am

  1761. made in

  1762. and he

  1763. comes and

  1764. dwells

  1765. amongst us

  1766. and knows

  1767. every trial

  1768. and temptation

  1769. that you

  1770. and I

  1771. do

  1772. only without

  1773. sin

  1774. he knows

  1775. the depth

  1776. of temptation

  1777. I give

  1778. in

  1779. he doesn't

  1780. give in

  1781. he identifies

  1782. with me

  1783. even more

  1784. deeply

  1785. than I am

  1786. able to

  1787. experience

  1788. myself

  1789. he my

  1790. representative

  1791. he identifies

  1792. with me

  1793. he chooses

  1794. to be my

  1795. substitute

  1796. to take

  1797. my place

  1798. so that the

  1799. wrongdoing

  1800. that I have

  1801. done is

  1802. dealt with

  1803. in him

  1804. and he can

  1805. do it

  1806. why

  1807. because he's

  1808. my representative

  1809. and he's

  1810. identified with

  1811. me

  1812. he knows

  1813. what he's

  1814. doing

  1815. and he

  1816. offers in

  1817. exchange

  1818. for him

  1819. for him

  1820. taking

  1821. my

  1822. doom

  1823. the

  1824. destiny

  1825. which

  1826. he

  1827. deserves

  1828. there

  1829. is no

  1830. sacrificing

  1831. of God's

  1832. justice

  1833. but mercy

  1834. without

  1835. sacrificing

  1836. justice

  1837. is greater

  1838. than

  1839. justice

  1840. and that

  1841. is what

  1842. God

  1843. offers

  1844. us

  1845. in the

  1846. person

  1847. of

  1848. Christ

  1849. and

  1850. that's

  1851. why

  1852. the

  1853. gospel

  1854. subverts

  1855. this

  1856. but fulfills

  1857. the

  1858. religious

  1859. imagination

  1860. Jesus

  1861. knew

  1862. the wrong

  1863. that I

  1864. have done

  1865. and

  1866. every

  1867. wrong

  1868. that I

  1869. have

  1870. done

  1871. has been

  1872. dealt

  1873. with by

  1874. him

  1875. and my

  1876. standing

  1877. with him

  1878. is not

  1879. on me

  1880. being able

  1881. to do

  1882. right

  1883. and not

  1884. do

  1885. wrong

  1886. and it's

  1887. not by

  1888. having

  1889. one rule

  1890. for me

  1891. and another

  1892. rule

  1893. for other

  1894. people

  1895. and it's

  1896. not by

  1897. me being

  1898. really

  1899. really good

  1900. at jumping

  1901. at other

  1902. people

  1903. for having

  1904. specks

  1905. in their

  1906. eye

  1907. while I

  1908. have a

  1909. log

  1910. in mine

  1911. it's

  1912. by

  1913. me

  1914. understanding

  1915. that

  1916. God

  1917. knew

  1918. the

  1919. depth

  1920. of the

  1921. wrongdoing

  1922. and everything

  1923. about me

  1924. when he

  1925. died

  1926. for when

  1927. Jesus

  1928. died

  1929. for me

  1930. on the

  1931. cross

  1932. it's

  1933. all

  1934. been

  1935. dealt

  1936. with

  1937. and that

  1938. means

  1939. that

  1940. week

  1941. by

  1942. week

  1943. one

  1944. of

  1945. the

  1946. means

  1947. of

  1948. grace

  1949. is

  1950. that

  1951. I

  1952. can

  1953. gather

  1954. with

  1955. other

  1956. brothers

  1957. and

  1958. sisters

  1959. in

  1960. Christ

  1961. and we

  1962. can

  1963. gather

  1964. around

  1965. the

  1966. Lord's

  1967. table

  1968. and we

  1969. can

  1970. remember

  1971. that

  1972. Jesus

  1973. died

  1974. on the

  1975. cross

  1976. that

  1977. he

  1978. shed

  1979. his

  1980. blood

  1981. that

  1982. his

  1983. body

  1984. was

  1985. pierced

  1986. and he

  1987. did

  1988. this

  1989. knowing

  1990. the

  1991. truth

  1992. the

  1993. mystery

  1994. the

  1995. secret

  1996. the

  1997. riddle

  1998. the

  1999. enigma

  2000. of

  2001. who

  2002. I

  2003. am

  2004. and

  2005. who

  2006. you

  2007. are

  2008. and

  2009. he

  2010. knew

  2011. that

  2012. when

  2013. he

  2014. died

  2015. for

  2016. me

  2017. and

  2018. so

  2019. I

  2020. can

  2021. confess

  2022. my

  2023. sins

  2024. confident

  2025. in

  2026. his

  2027. forgiveness

  2028. I

  2029. am

  2030. not

  2031. going

  2032. to

  2033. unearth

  2034. anything

  2035. in

  2036. my

  2037. past

  2038. that

  2039. is

  2040. so

  2041. terrible

  2042. that

  2043. he

  2044. did

  2045. not

  2046. turn

  2047. away

  2048. from

  2049. me

  2050. but

  2051. he

  2052. died

  2053. for

  2054. me

  2055. and

  2056. so

  2057. I

  2058. have

  2059. a

  2060. place

  2061. where

  2062. I

  2063. don't

  2064. have

  2065. to

  2066. pretend

  2067. and

  2068. it's

  2069. really

  2070. hard

  2071. because

  2072. I

  2073. like

  2074. pretending

  2075. and I

  2076. like

  2077. having

  2078. different

  2079. rules

  2080. for

  2081. other

  2082. people

  2083. and

  2084. I

  2085. like

  2086. seeing

  2087. specks

  2088. in

  2089. other

  2090. people's

  2091. eyes

  2092. and

  2093. not

  2094. noticing

  2095. the

  2096. logs

  2097. of

  2098. mine

  2099. I'm

  2100. addicted

  2101. to

  2102. that

  2103. but

  2104. week

  2105. by

  2106. week

  2107. as

  2108. part

  2109. of

  2110. the

  2111. means

  2112. of

  2113. grace

  2114. I

  2115. loves

  2116. me

  2117. and

  2118. I

  2119. can

  2120. start

  2121. to

  2122. look

  2123. at

  2124. the

  2125. wrong

  2126. that

  2127. I've

  2128. done

  2129. and

  2130. said

  2131. that

  2132. is

  2133. wrong

  2134. that

  2135. is

  2136. gratuitous

  2137. and

  2138. I

  2139. can

  2140. start

  2141. to

  2142. have

  2143. the

  2144. self

  2145. possession

  2146. and

  2147. standing

  2148. in

  2149. Christ

  2150. to

  2151. say

  2152. yes

  2153. this

  2154. week

  2155. I've

  2156. done

  2157. this

  2158. and

  2159. yes

  2160. this

  2161. week

  2162. I've

  2163. done

  2164. this

  2165. and

  2166. I

  2167. can't

  2168. even

  2169. begin

  2170. to

  2171. count

  2172. them

  2173. and

  2174. I'm

  2175. sorry

  2176. for

  2177. them

  2178. but

  2179. I

  2180. am

  2181. so

  2182. thankful

  2183. for

  2184. grace

  2185. I'm

  2186. so

  2187. thankful

  2188. for

  2189. the

  2190. cross

  2191. I'm

  2192. so

  2193. thankful

  2194. for

  2195. Christ

  2196. I

  2197. thank

  2198. you

  2199. for

  2200. these

  2201. means

  2202. of

  2203. grace

  2204. of

  2205. reading

  2206. your

  2207. word

  2208. and

  2209. of

  2210. a

  2211. common

  2212. one

  2213. another

  2214. life

  2215. with

  2216. brothers

  2217. and

  2218. sisters

  2219. and

  2220. of

  2221. the

  2222. Lord's

  2223. table

  2224. and

  2225. of

  2226. the

  2227. songs

  2228. and

  2229. that

  2230. I

  2231. can

  2232. recommit

  2233. and

  2234. once

  2235. again

  2236. I

  2237. can

  2238. say

  2239. thank

  2240. you

  2241. Jesus

  2242. you

  2243. know

  2244. this

  2245. week

  2246. I

  2247. had

  2248. a

  2249. chance

  2250. to

  2251. do

  2252. justice

  2253. and

  2254. I

  2255. chose

  2256. to

  2257. be

  2258. silent

  2259. I

  2260. recommit

  2261. help

  2262. me

  2263. to

  2264. live

  2265. in

  2266. a

  2267. way

  2268. which

  2269. spreads

  2270. the

  2271. gospel

  2272. which

  2273. does

  2274. good

  2275. for

  2276. this

  2277. city

  2278. which

  2279. brings

  2280. you

  2281. glory

  2282. invite

  2283. you

  2284. to

  2285. stand

  2286. if

  2287. you're

  2288. here

  2289. or

  2290. you're

  2291. watching

  2292. and

  2293. if

  2294. you've

  2295. never

  2296. given

  2297. your

  2298. life

  2299. to

  2300. Christ

  2301. it's

  2302. no

  2303. better

  2304. time

  2305. right

  2306. now

  2307. to

  2308. say

  2309. Jesus

  2310. I

  2311. now

  2312. understand

  2313. what

  2314. it is

  2315. that

  2316. you've

  2317. done

  2318. for

  2319. me

  2320. on

  2321. the

  2322. cross

  2323. and

  2324. I'm

  2325. tired

  2326. of

  2327. being

  2328. demoralized

  2329. by my

  2330. wrongdoing

  2331. I'm

  2332. tired

  2333. of

  2334. play

  2335. acting

  2336. I'm

  2337. tired

  2338. of

  2339. pretending

  2340. I'm

  2341. glad

  2342. that I

  2343. can

  2344. be

  2345. honest

  2346. with

  2347. you

  2348. and

  2349. honestly

  2350. I

  2351. want

  2352. you

  2353. Jesus

  2354. to

  2355. be

  2356. my

  2357. savior

  2358. and

  2359. my

  2360. lord

  2361. and

  2362. I

  2363. thank

  2364. you

  2365. that

  2366. you

  2367. will

  2368. never

  2369. let

  2370. me

  2371. go

  2372. and

  2373. there's

  2374. no

  2375. better

  2376. time

  2377. than

  2378. today

  2379. to

  2380. say

  2381. quietness

  2382. of

  2383. my

  2384. heart

  2385. but

  2386. surrounded

  2387. by

  2388. my

  2389. brothers

  2390. and

  2391. sisters

  2392. there

  2393. will

  2394. be

  2395. a

  2396. time

  2397. for

  2398. me

  2399. later

  2400. to

  2401. say

  2402. that

  2403. I'm

  2404. sorry

  2405. for

  2406. what

  2407. I've

  2408. done

  2409. and

  2410. to

  2411. recommit

  2412. to

  2413. you

  2414. to

  2415. be

  2416. gripped

  2417. by

  2418. the

  2419. gospel

  2420. and

  2421. to

  2422. live

  2423. in a

  2424. way

  2425. that

  2426. brings

  2427. you

  2428. glory

  2429. and

  2430. recommit

  2431. to

  2432. the

  2433. means

  2434. of

  2435. grace

  2436. fellowship

  2437. with

  2438. other

  2439. believers

  2440. whether

  2441. it's

  2442. one

  2443. on

  2444. one

  2445. or

  2446. mentors

  2447. or

  2448. small

  2449. groups

  2450. and

  2451. weekly

  2452. meetings

  2453. that

  2454. I

  2455. recommit

  2456. thank

  2457. you

  2458. that

  2459. you

  2460. accept

  2461. me

  2462. Christ

  2463. thank

  2464. you

  2465. let's

  2466. bow

  2467. our

  2468. heads

  2469. in

  2470. prayer

  2471. father

  2472. pour

  2473. out

  2474. the

  2475. holy

  2476. spirit

  2477. upon

  2478. us

  2479. with

  2480. gentle

  2481. but

  2482. very

  2483. deep

  2484. and

  2485. penetrating

  2486. power

  2487. we

  2488. ask

  2489. that

  2490. you

  2491. would

  2492. help

  2493. us

  2494. to

  2495. put

  2496. to

  2497. death

  2498. our

  2499. natural

  2500. religious

  2501. imagination

  2502. and

  2503. intuition

  2504. that

  2505. you

  2506. would

  2507. grip

  2508. us

  2509. by

  2510. the

  2511. scandalous

  2512. nature

  2513. of

  2514. your

  2515. grace

  2516. that

  2517. we

  2518. would

  2519. learn

  2520. to

  2521. live

  2522. out

  2523. of

  2524. the

  2525. promise

  2526. of

  2527. the

  2528. scandalous

  2529. subversive

  2530. fulfillment

  2531. of

  2532. your

  2533. grace

  2534. offered

  2535. to

  2536. people

  2537. like

  2538. me

  2539. and

  2540. that

  2541. you

  2542. would

  2543. help

  2544. us

  2545. to

  2546. see

  2547. the

  2548. world

  2549. from

  2550. those

  2551. perspectives

  2552. and

  2553. those

  2554. eyes

  2555. and

  2556. we

  2557. ask

  2558. Lord

  2559. that

  2560. you

  2561. would

  2562. do

  2563. this

  2564. wonderful

  2565. work

  2566. we

  2567. thank

  2568. you

  2569. for

  2570. Jesus

  2571. and

  2572. we

  2573. ask

  2574. it

  2575. all

  2576. in

  2577. his

  2578. name

  2579. and

  2580. we

  2581. say

  2582. together

  2583. Amen
