  1. Father, I ask that you would gently but powerfully pour the Holy Spirit upon myself and upon all who are watching this video, listening into this sermon.

  2. We ask, Lord, that you would draw us close to yourself, that you would help us to understand that you are God, that you are sovereign over all things, that you are good and loving, and that you keep your word.

  3. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  4. So, one of the things which is regularly talked about in movies and in literature nowadays is whether or not we are, in fact, just controlled or pushed around by blind, uncaring fate, or whether we have significant choice.

  5. And, of course, it would be a pretty depressing movie or story if at the end of it it was the case that it was just pure and utter blind, uncaring fate.

  6. So, usually when movies talk about it, in a sense, they try to say that there is some type of a choice.

  7. We also see, in small ways but increasing ways, discussions about whether the world is empty or full.

  8. It goes along, actually, with the previous type of question in the sense that if, in fact, everything is just a result of Allah's will, if, in fact, everything is just the working out of karma and karmic destiny,

  9. if, in fact, the world is, as certain naturalistic scientists describe it, that there's just cause and effect, then, in a sense, the world is empty.

  10. But we don't feel that the world is empty.

  11. We feel at times that there's things which are beautiful and loving and that when you see certain types of things,

  12. it's not just that you're imposing your desire for meaning and significance onto the event,

  13. but you have a sense that you're recognizing something which is there.

  14. At the same time, there's also questions about whether or not, and this is sort of going to sound like it's a bit of a left turn,

  15. but they're actually a bit connected with each other.

  16. Some people think, and some Christians think, that God only answers their prayers.

  17. And, of course, if you aren't a Christian, that's going to be very, very offensive,

  18. the idea that somehow or another God only answers your prayers.

  19. Like, that just seems wrong.

  20. And, in fact, many people, if they had the comfort to say that to a Christian who seems to talk as if that's the case,

  21. would actually say that not only is that arrogant, George, if I was the one making that claim,

  22. but it's actually not true.

  23. Like, George, if you just look at it,

  24. if it was true that God answered Christians' prayers but not non-Christians' prayers,

  25. and, by the way, I have to be careful.

  26. Like, if God answers, because it's not as if, like, on one level you can sort of divide the world into Christian and non-Christian,

  27. but, obviously, everybody in the world doesn't think of themselves as non-Christians.

  28. They think of themselves as themselves.

  29. And so, really, a better way to put it is, you know, the Buddhists would say,

  30. you know, George, I think, you know, God answers Buddhist prayers.

  31. I think he answers Hindu prayers.

  32. I think he answers secular people's prayers, spiritual people's prayers,

  33. boutique religious people's prayers.

  34. And, in fact, George, it doesn't even seem as if there's any evidence for the idea

  35. that God has any particular desire to answer Christians' prayers,

  36. because, I mean, if you look around,

  37. Christians aren't richer, more powerful, more successful than non-Christians.

  38. And, in fact, actually, if anything, it looks as if God is answering everybody's prayers other than Christians,

  39. because the Christian church is declining, and it's not very popular.

  40. So, anyway, we're going to look at a very, very old story,

  41. and it's in Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  42. This is the second to last of our series of sermons on the life of Abraham.

  43. And this story is a very simple story,

  44. but, like, a lot of these stories, like, all of these stories, of these Abraham stories,

  45. they're simple, but they're deep.

  46. And there's lots of different ways you could,

  47. there's lots of things you could mine from these particular stories,

  48. but we're just going to look at one aspect of this story.

  49. But it speaks into this whole thing of fate, of choice,

  50. of the world being, the universe being empty,

  51. or it being full of prayer and different people groups

  52. and their different understandings of God.

  53. And this one story actually has some very profound insights

  54. into each of these questions.

  55. So let's look.

  56. We're going to be looking at Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  57. And what happened just before this is Genesis chapter 20

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  58. was a story which helped us reflect upon the question

  59. of why it is that people do wrong things,

  60. like why do I gratuitously sometimes do something which I know is wrong?

  61. And the other thing about that story is it gave some profound insight

  62. into the religious and spiritual imagination

  63. and how the gospel subverts our religious and spiritual imaginations,

  64. our natural ones.

  65. But even while it subverts them,

  66. it actually fulfills the deepest longing

  67. of the spiritual and religious intuitions.

  68. That was in Genesis chapter 20.

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  69. We looked at it last week.

  70. So let's look at this story, Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  71. And it begins with a simple, beautiful verse that,

  72. I mean, that's a verse if you're a Christian.

  73. If you're from another type of faith commitment or searching or skeptic,

  74. this is a verse which in many ways captures the essence of the Christian life.

  75. And for Christians, it's a verse that captures

  76. one of the essences of the Christian life.

  77. And it's very simple.

  78. It goes like this.

  79. The Lord visited Sarah as he had said,

  80. and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

  81. Very, very simple.

  82. The Lord visited Sarah as he had said,

  83. and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

  84. Here's a very, very beautiful, gentle image of the Lord visiting.

  85. And the Lord visits to act, to deliver, to meet, to connect.

  86. And he visits Sarah,

  87. and he does exactly what he had said that he was going to do.

  88. He makes promises to Sarah

  89. that Sarah sometimes doesn't believe,

  90. but at other times sort of has believed.

  91. She's not a perfect person,

  92. but he has visited her,

  93. and he does what he's promising.

  94. In fact, this first verse, in a sense,

  95. summarizes all of the chapter.

  96. And it's also something which is very important

  97. because it helps to explain the gospel.

  98. You see, for Christians, the gospel is this good news

  99. that even though you are very, very far from God,

  100. the triune God, the true and living God,

  101. and even though he has no obligation

  102. to love you or to care for you,

  103. and even though you have done many things

  104. that make you not deserve his love,

  105. and even if there are things about you

  106. which are very shameful or very, very unsuccessful,

  107. that the promise of the gospel is that Jesus,

  108. the God, the Son of God, visited the human race.

  109. And just as he had promised in the 39 books

  110. of what we Christians called the Old Testament

  111. and our Jewish friends called the Tanakh,

  112. there's this constant promise

  113. that God would do something

  114. that human beings could not do for themselves

  115. that he would deliver,

  116. and that he does this in the person of his Son,

  117. in not just the life that Jesus lives,

  118. but most importantly, his death that he dies,

  119. and then his resurrection.

  120. And that this is God's means

  121. to reconcile people to himself.

  122. It's God's means that when we put our faith and trust

  123. in the person of Jesus and what he's done,

  124. that God makes us his child by adoption and grace,

  125. that he visits us, so to speak,

  126. and that now the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  127. in a sense, now live within the Christian,

  128. that Christ is our hope of glory,

  129. and that we now live as the child

  130. of our Heavenly Father in his world.

  131. And that's the gospel,

  132. that God visited us,

  133. just as he said he would,

  134. and he keeps his promise,

  135. which is if we put our faith and trust in Christ,

  136. that we will be his child by adoption and grace,

  137. that he doesn't weigh our merits,

  138. but pardons our offenses.

  139. And so in some ways,

  140. this very, very simple little verse,

  141. which encapsulates a story,

  142. also encapsulates what you'll see time and time again

  143. in the stories that come,

  144. and ultimately in the story of the New Testament,

  145. of the gospel,

  146. and the promise of the New Testament.

  147. And in this particular case,

  148. what we see is that God has promised

  149. that he was going to do something

  150. which was humanly and naturalistically impossible,

  151. that God was going to intervene

  152. in the natural world

  153. in a way that we would call a miracle,

  154. that Sarah,

  155. who has been barren for a long, long, long time,

  156. never able to bear children in her entire life,

  157. even when, in a sense,

  158. her reproductive capabilities were there,

  159. but long after that has ceased to exist,

  160. and she's truly barren,

  161. that God would create a miracle baby,

  162. that she would, in fact, have a baby.

  163. And so that's what's going to happen

  164. in the rest of the story.

  165. Let's just look at it.

  166. The next verses are very, very simple,

  167. just to show that, in fact,

  168. God, who's promised that he would do a miracle in Sarah,

  169. that he would bring life out of barrenness,

  170. he visits her and keeps his promise.

  171. Look what it says, verse 2.

  172. Abraham was 100 years old

  173. when his son Isaac was born to him.

  174. And Sarah said,

  175. God has made laughter for me.

  176. Everyone who hears will laugh over me.

  177. And she said,

  178. who would have said to Abraham

  179. that Sarah would nurse children?

  180. Yet I have born him a son in his old age.

  181. And so God has performed a miracle.

  182. Now, in fact,

  183. actually sort of even emphasizes

  184. that not only that the baby is born,

  185. but she's going to nurse the baby,

  186. like there's a whole...

  187. One of the things I like to say,

  188. and it's very true,

  189. is that the more science develops,

  190. science doesn't disprove the miracles,

  191. because science can't disprove miracles.

  192. Science increases the wow.

  193. Science increases the wow.

  194. Now, bringing up this thing of the miracle,

  195. and another thing,

  196. if the Bible just ended here,

  197. what we would have is a classic story

  198. that could be turned into

  199. a blockbuster Hollywood movie.

  200. You know, Abraham is 100,

  201. Sarah is 90,

  202. God has visited Sarah,

  203. he's kept his promise,

  204. a miracle has been performed,

  205. Isaac is born,

  206. and they all lived happily ever after.

  207. And there you go,

  208. you have a classic Hollywood movie,

  209. and they all lived happily ever after.

  210. But one of the things about the Bible

  211. is...

  212. Actually, on one level, by the way,

  213. the story ends

  214. with that those who are God's children

  215. by adoption and grace

  216. live happily ever after

  217. into eternity

  218. in the new heaven and the new earth.

  219. But that prophecy,

  220. which is still in the future for us,

  221. the Bible is a very, very,

  222. very realistic book.

  223. A very realistic book.

  224. And in fact,

  225. part of the problem we have

  226. with the Bible

  227. is how realistic it is.

  228. And the Bible is

  229. both a realistic mirror

  230. and a realistic window.

  231. It is a mirror

  232. in the sense that

  233. it helps us to see ourselves

  234. as we really are,

  235. and it's a window

  236. in the sense that

  237. it helps us to see the world

  238. as it really is.

  239. A world where there really is a God,

  240. the triune God,

  241. who really exists,

  242. who has created all things,

  243. who sustains all things.

  244. That that's the world

  245. that we actually live in,

  246. even if it's not the world

  247. portrayed by academia,

  248. by government,

  249. by the courts,

  250. by the media,

  251. by the public intellectuals.

  252. That in fact,

  253. the real world

  254. that actually is the one

  255. that we inhabit

  256. is one where

  257. the triune God

  258. has created

  259. and sustained all things,

  260. and we human beings

  261. live in it.

  262. So in this particular thing,

  263. you have a miracle.

  264. Now,

  265. you actually,

  266. the story in a sense

  267. just can't end here

  268. by saying,

  269. and they all lived

  270. happily ever after,

  271. because if you've been

  272. reading the story,

  273. if you've read the story

  274. from chapter 12,

  275. 13,

  276. all the way on to here,

  277. you'll see that God

  278. has made a couple of promises.

  279. He's promised not only

  280. that this boy will be born,

  281. but that he's going

  282. to be the heir.

  283. He's going to also be

  284. the beginning of a line

  285. that will culminate

  286. with God blessing

  287. the whole earth

  288. through this seed,

  289. this offspring,

  290. this line.

  291. And there's also been

  292. promises made

  293. about the land.

  294. And so those things

  295. still have to be dealt with.

  296. They have to be wrapped up.

  297. They have to have something

  298. that talks about how,

  299. it's not just that the birth

  300. is going to be enough.

  301. But the other thing is

  302. is that miracles

  303. have consequences downstream.

  304. And so what we're going to see

  305. is that if a miracle

  306. actually happens,

  307. it's going to have

  308. consequences downstream.

  309. And it's not,

  310. in a sense,

  311. going to be enough.

  312. Now, what do I mean by that?

  313. And let me help you

  314. to try to understand

  315. how it works

  316. and how it all fits in

  317. with science.

  318. I love,

  319. you've heard variations

  320. of this analogy before.

  321. If you've heard me preach

  322. many times,

  323. you know,

  324. Lord have mercy.

  325. And one of the analogies

  326. I like is of the pool table.

  327. And so you can imagine

  328. you have a pool table

  329. and it's a very,

  330. very large one

  331. and you have a machine

  332. which is designed

  333. to have the cue

  334. hit a particular ball.

  335. And assume for a second

  336. that in principle

  337. scientists could study

  338. the felt on the pool table,

  339. study the,

  340. how bouncy

  341. the edges

  342. of the pool table are,

  343. knows the roundnesses

  344. and everything about the balls

  345. and they place the balls

  346. in a particular,

  347. you know,

  348. the balls are placed.

  349. and scientists

  350. in theory

  351. could have the machine

  352. use the cue

  353. to hit the first ball

  354. to send the ball

  355. in motion.

  356. And in theory,

  357. scientists could

  358. mathematically plot

  359. how that ball

  360. is going to move,

  361. what balls

  362. it's going to hit

  363. and how those different balls

  364. will all be hit

  365. and how they'll bounce around.

  366. And it would in a sense

  367. be able to map

  368. how all of those things move

  369. and where they end up.

  370. And so one of the ways

  371. to understand,

  372. and that's how science works,

  373. right?

  374. It figures out,

  375. it studies

  376. how these natural processes work.

  377. But science can't say

  378. anything at all

  379. about a miracle

  380. because just as

  381. in this experiment,

  382. which is all,

  383. let's say,

  384. perfectly done,

  385. let's say a millisecond

  386. after the cue

  387. hits that first ball,

  388. a millisecond after it,

  389. your six-year-old

  390. adds an extra ball

  391. on the table

  392. right in the middle.

  393. Now,

  394. now all of your predictions

  395. aren't going to be correct.

  396. Now,

  397. the laws of motion

  398. and all of those other things

  399. are all still true,

  400. but there's now

  401. an extra ball

  402. on the table,

  403. which means now

  404. that those balls

  405. that you've calculated

  406. their directions

  407. are going to,

  408. some of them

  409. are going to hit that ball

  410. and they're all going to move

  411. in different ways

  412. and the end result

  413. will be a very different thing

  414. than you had predicted.

  415. And that,

  416. in many ways,

  417. is one of the best ways

  418. to understand

  419. what the Bible understands

  420. as a miracle.

  421. It's not that it suspends

  422. the laws of science

  423. or the laws of nature.

  424. It is that God,

  425. who sustains all things

  426. and is sovereign

  427. over all things,

  428. occasionally he does

  429. a new thing.

  430. He puts,

  431. in a sense,

  432. a new pool ball

  433. or billiard ball

  434. onto the table.

  435. And when the miracle comes,

  436. there's now going to be

  437. consequences downstream,

  438. right?

  439. The balls were all going

  440. to end up in a different place

  441. than if God had not done

  442. the miracle.

  443. And so,

  444. one of the things

  445. that we have to,

  446. in a sense,

  447. look at,

  448. like,

  449. see,

  450. what this starts

  451. to point us to

  452. and what this story

  453. is going to do,

  454. because the story

  455. doesn't just end

  456. with the miracle.

  457. The story looks

  458. at what happens

  459. downstream

  460. from the miracle.

  461. In fact,

  462. if I have a title

  463. for this talk,

  464. it will be

  465. downstream

  466. from a miracle.

  467. And that's what

  468. this story

  469. is going to show you.

  470. The miracle happens,

  471. but one moment,

  472. like,

  473. there's Ishmael,

  474. there's Hagar.

  475. You might not know

  476. who these people are

  477. if you're watching this

  478. and haven't followed

  479. any of the other stories,

  480. but if you have,

  481. there's these other people

  482. around.

  483. There's consequences

  484. for them,

  485. like,

  486. how's this miracle

  487. going to affect them?

  488. And so,

  489. what this story

  490. at a very simple level

  491. does,

  492. it shows that

  493. for Christians,

  494. and this,

  495. this,

  496. by the way,

  497. I think,

  498. perfectly fits

  499. our experience.

  500. You see,

  501. when I said,

  502. you know,

  503. earlier that,

  504. you know,

  505. if you have a world

  506. of pure cause and effect,

  507. whether it's from

  508. the will of Allah

  509. or karmic destiny

  510. or just cause and effect,

  511. it's hard to see

  512. how there could be

  513. really beauty

  514. and meaning

  515. and significance

  516. in the world,

  517. yet we feel there is

  518. beauty and meaning

  519. and significance.

  520. And we feel

  521. that we have choices,

  522. but the fact

  523. that we have choices

  524. doesn't mean

  525. that there's no longer

  526. other cause and effect

  527. or consequence.

  528. And so,

  529. how do you put

  530. all those things together?

  531. And the Bible

  532. presents this wonderful picture

  533. in the sense of a dance,

  534. guaranteed by God,

  535. a dance of providence,

  536. which is where God

  537. acts in the flow of events

  538. to bring about

  539. a result that he wants,

  540. where miracles,

  541. where God intervenes,

  542. and also human beings

  543. that God has endowed

  544. with the dignity

  545. of causality,

  546. in other words,

  547. that we can actually

  548. freely choose.

  549. And so,

  550. the world isn't

  551. simplistically reduced

  552. to cause and effect,

  553. nor is it simplistically

  554. reduced to mere choice,

  555. because,

  556. by the way,

  557. if the world was reduced

  558. to mere choice,

  559. once again,

  560. the world would be empty.

  561. It would not really have

  562. inherently some type

  563. of beauty or meaning

  564. and significance

  565. that we are to recognize.

  566. And so,

  567. the Bible,

  568. in stories like this,

  569. wonderfully puts together

  570. this dance

  571. of the existence

  572. of the triune God,

  573. of cause and effect,

  574. of human beings

  575. being able to choose,

  576. of providence

  577. and of miracle.

  578. And let's see how this now

  579. starts to work itself out

  580. in this story,

  581. because Abraham

  582. has another son

  583. who's about 12 years older

  584. or something like that,

  585. 10 to 12 or 13 years older.

  586. What happens?

  587. Well,

  588. we'll look at verse 8.

  589. And the child grew

  590. and was weaned,

  591. and Abraham made

  592. a great feast

  593. on the day

  594. that Isaac was weaned.

  595. And in the culture,

  596. archaeologists

  597. and anthropologists

  598. and scholars tell us

  599. that probably was

  600. somewhere between

  601. the ages 2 1⁄2 and 3,

  602. close to 3,

  603. that the weaning

  604. would have happened.

  605. Verse 9,

  606. But Sarah saw

  607. the son of Hagar,

  608. the Egyptian,

  609. whom she had born,

  610. sorry,

  611. but Sarah saw

  612. the son of Hagar,

  613. the Egyptian,

  614. whom she had born

  615. to Abraham,

  616. laughing.

  617. Now,

  618. just sort of pause here

  619. for a second.

  620. In this particular version

  621. of the Bible,

  622. which I've read,

  623. it's one of the most

  624. literal versions,

  625. the ESV.

  626. And sometimes

  627. the literal versions

  628. aren't very helpful,

  629. because there's a

  630. very, very strong

  631. connotation

  632. in the original language

  633. that it's cruel,

  634. mocking laughter.

  635. laughter.

  636. So it's not

  637. the laughter

  638. of a 12-year-old

  639. having lots of fun

  640. or a 14- or 15-year-old

  641. having lots of fun.

  642. It's the laughter

  643. of the bully.

  644. It's the laughter

  645. of the powerful

  646. in terms of ridiculing

  647. and shaming

  648. the weak.

  649. It's the laughter

  650. of not only shaming

  651. the weak,

  652. but the promise

  653. or the hope

  654. of the person laughing

  655. that harm

  656. and damage

  657. will be done.

  658. And that's what's

  659. being communicated

  660. here in this

  661. particular text.

  662. So,

  663. what's going to happen?

  664. Well,

  665. what we see here

  666. is these next

  667. two verses

  668. are a really important

  669. way to help us

  670. to understand

  671. how God interacts

  672. with the world.

  673. How there can still

  674. be both human freedom

  675. and there also

  676. can be,

  677. like as some Christians

  678. say,

  679. God only has plan A.

  680. He doesn't need

  681. a plan B.

  682. Human beings

  683. still have freedom,

  684. but God still

  685. sometimes,

  686. not sometimes,

  687. He superintends

  688. events towards

  689. His desired end.

  690. Verse 10,

  691. So,

  692. she,

  693. that is Sarah,

  694. said to Abraham,

  695. cast out this

  696. slave woman

  697. with her son,

  698. for the son

  699. of this slave woman

  700. shall not be heir

  701. with my son Isaac.

  702. and the thing

  703. was very displeasing

  704. to Abraham

  705. on account

  706. of his son.

  707. Now,

  708. some of you

  709. who are very familiar

  710. with the Bible

  711. will know that

  712. those words of Sarah

  713. end up becoming

  714. very important

  715. as part of an argument

  716. in the book of Galatians,

  717. but we're not going to

  718. necessarily go there

  719. right now.

  720. The point is

  721. that Sarah

  722. means harm

  723. to Hagar

  724. and her son Ishmael.

  725. She does not desire

  726. their good.

  727. She desires

  728. to hurt them.

  729. She is a

  730. tigress

  731. in a sense

  732. when it comes

  733. to standing up

  734. for her son.

  735. And even if,

  736. and from her point

  737. of view,

  738. Abraham's not

  739. doing enough

  740. about it,

  741. she's not going

  742. to stand idly by.

  743. She's a tigress.

  744. She's not a labradoodle.

  745. And she's going

  746. to defend

  747. her son.

  748. Now,

  749. by the way,

  750. this also ends up

  751. having a bit

  752. of an impact

  753. because if you go back

  754. and you read

  755. all of the earlier things,

  756. it's very,

  757. very clear

  758. from the earlier

  759. parts of the story,

  760. the earlier stories

  761. that make up

  762. the story of Abraham,

  763. that in fact

  764. the promise is

  765. that God was going

  766. to provide

  767. one son

  768. of promise,

  769. the line

  770. that would eventually

  771. culminate in

  772. Jesus the Messiah.

  773. And so,

  774. how is this going

  775. to work out

  776. if there's

  777. Ishmael

  778. and if there's

  779. enmity

  780. and how they're

  781. going to be

  782. with Isaac?

  783. And Abraham

  784. doesn't like

  785. what Sarah

  786. wants to do,

  787. but what's going

  788. to happen?

  789. Is Sarah

  790. going to win

  791. or is Abraham

  792. going to win?

  793. Well,

  794. as we see

  795. in the moment,

  796. well,

  797. let's see what

  798. happens.

  799. Look at

  800. verse 13.

  801. Verse 12.

  802. But God

  803. said to Abraham,

  804. be not displeased

  805. because of the boy

  806. and because of

  807. your slave woman.

  808. It's really

  809. more of a sense

  810. of,

  811. he can still

  812. be in a sense

  813. displeased.

  814. The implication

  815. of this

  816. is more

  817. in the original

  818. language that

  819. it's part of

  820. his promise

  821. that I'm going

  822. to do something

  823. about this

  824. on God's part

  825. through providence.

  826. Continues on,

  827. whatever Sarah

  828. says to you,

  829. do as she

  830. tells you,

  831. for through

  832. Isaac

  833. shall your

  834. offspring

  835. be named.

  836. And I

  837. will make

  838. a nation

  839. of the

  840. son of

  841. the slave

  842. woman

  843. also

  844. because

  845. he

  846. is

  847. your

  848. offspring.

  849. Now,

  850. if you've

  851. watched some

  852. of these

  853. other sermons

  854. on the

  855. life of

  856. Abraham,

  857. one of the

  858. things I

  859. say constantly

  860. is,

  861. I mean,

  862. not only in

  863. a sense

  864. is this

  865. a story,

  866. but it's

  867. a story

  868. within

  869. a bigger

  870. book,

  871. which we

  872. now know

  873. of as

  874. the book

  875. of Genesis.

  876. And the

  877. book of

  878. Genesis

  879. is also

  880. part of

  881. a larger

  882. story,

  883. which is

  884. the five

  885. books,

  886. all ultimately

  887. and primarily

  888. written by

  889. Moses,

  890. Genesis,

  891. Exodus,

  892. Leviticus,

  893. Numbers,

  894. and Deuteronomy.

  895. And of

  896. course,

  897. part of a

  898. larger book

  899. still in

  900. terms of the

  901. rest of the

  902. Old Testament

  903. and the

  904. New Testament.

  905. But Genesis

  906. 50 ends

  907. with a

  908. very,

  909. very important

  910. story,

  911. and we

  912. can see

  913. that this

  914. story here

  915. is foreshadowing

  916. this,

  917. and it's a

  918. very important

  919. thing for us

  920. to understand

  921. a little bit

  922. about how

  923. we have

  924. human freedom

  925. and how

  926. God interacts

  927. with our

  928. freedom while

  929. still being

  930. sovereign.

  931. There's a

  932. story at

  933. the end

  934. in terms of

  935. Joseph and

  936. his brothers,

  937. and his

  938. brothers hate

  939. Joseph,

  940. and so

  941. they sell

  942. Joseph as

  943. a slave to

  944. some wandering

  945. traders.

  946. They literally

  947. take their

  948. younger brother

  949. and give him

  950. to these

  951. traders.

  952. They take

  953. money for

  954. it, and

  955. they sell

  956. their son

  957. into slavery.

  958. And then

  959. the story

  960. proceeds,

  961. and all

  962. these other

  963. things happen

  964. in the story,

  965. but at the

  966. end of it,

  967. by a series

  968. of providential

  969. events,

  970. Joseph ends

  971. up becoming

  972. the second

  973. most powerful

  974. person in

  975. the nation

  976. of Egypt,

  977. and there's

  978. a famine,

  979. and his

  980. brothers come

  981. back, and

  982. his dad

  983. comes back,

  984. and all of

  985. that stuff,

  986. and it

  987. ends up

  988. that Joseph

  989. is able to

  990. save the

  991. life of his

  992. family.

  993. And after

  994. Joseph's

  995. father dies,

  996. the brothers

  997. say, by

  998. the way, we

  999. want you to

  1000. know that

  1001. before our

  1002. father died,

  1003. he privately

  1004. told us not

  1005. to hold

  1006. against us

  1007. the fact

  1008. that, you

  1009. know, like,

  1010. we sold

  1011. you into

  1012. slavery a

  1013. little bit,

  1014. because, you

  1015. know, they're

  1016. pretty worried.

  1017. Joseph is the

  1018. second most

  1019. powerful person

  1020. in Egypt,

  1021. and they

  1022. sold him

  1023. into slavery.

  1024. And there's

  1025. a very, very

  1026. powerful phrase

  1027. there that

  1028. Joseph says,

  1029. that you

  1030. meant it

  1031. for ill,

  1032. you meant

  1033. it for bad,

  1034. but God

  1035. used it

  1036. for good.

  1037. You meant

  1038. it for evil,

  1039. but God

  1040. used it

  1041. for good.

  1042. And what we

  1043. see here is

  1044. the same type

  1045. of a story

  1046. being told

  1047. here in this

  1048. thing.

  1049. Sarah means

  1050. this thing

  1051. for Hagar,

  1052. for evil,

  1053. but God

  1054. is going to

  1055. use it

  1056. for good.

  1057. Let's see.

  1058. how this

  1059. works.

  1060. And by the

  1061. way, if you

  1062. think about it

  1063. for a second,

  1064. this is going

  1065. to be very

  1066. important for

  1067. us to

  1068. understand when

  1069. it comes to

  1070. the gospel.

  1071. You see,

  1072. this story,

  1073. in a sense,

  1074. is preparing

  1075. us for the

  1076. gospel in a

  1077. very, very

  1078. subtle way.

  1079. You see,

  1080. what happens

  1081. in the gospel

  1082. is, like,

  1083. how does

  1084. Jesus end

  1085. up being

  1086. born where

  1087. he's born

  1088. fulfilling

  1089. prophecies,

  1090. and how does

  1091. he end up

  1092. dying where

  1093. he dies

  1094. fulfilling

  1095. prophecies,

  1096. and how does

  1097. he rise from

  1098. the dead,

  1099. and everything

  1100. like that?

  1101. And a lot

  1102. of these

  1103. things are

  1104. completely and

  1105. utterly out

  1106. of control.

  1107. Well, what

  1108. happens is an

  1109. emperor in

  1110. Rome just

  1111. decides that

  1112. he wants to

  1113. do something,

  1114. and all these

  1115. people groups

  1116. happen to

  1117. move around.

  1118. But he

  1119. makes his

  1120. decision because

  1121. for whatever

  1122. reason he

  1123. wants to have

  1124. more power or

  1125. just show how

  1126. powerful he is,

  1127. but the result

  1128. is that Jesus

  1129. is born exactly

  1130. where God has

  1131. prophesied that

  1132. the Savior would

  1133. be born.

  1134. And that when

  1135. it comes time to

  1136. the Jewish

  1137. religious leaders

  1138. and the Roman

  1139. leaders,

  1140. they all are

  1141. just acting out

  1142. of their own

  1143. agenda, and in

  1144. every case of

  1145. those agendas,

  1146. they're desiring

  1147. harm for Jesus,

  1148. but the result

  1149. of them acting

  1150. out of their

  1151. own agendas

  1152. and acting to

  1153. wanting to

  1154. harm Jesus

  1155. is that once

  1156. again, multiple

  1157. scripture texts,

  1158. the prophecies of

  1159. them is fulfilled,

  1160. and Jesus ends

  1161. up dying just as

  1162. he has also

  1163. predicted.

  1164. One of the

  1165. reasons you can,

  1166. in a sense,

  1167. trust the words

  1168. of Jesus is that

  1169. when you look at

  1170. the eyewitness

  1171. biographies of

  1172. Jesus, Jesus

  1173. himself predicts

  1174. he's going to

  1175. die in a way

  1176. that he can't

  1177. orchestrate,

  1178. because it's

  1179. something that

  1180. has to be done

  1181. by Roman power.

  1182. He doesn't say,

  1183. I'm going to

  1184. kill myself,

  1185. because then you

  1186. could just say,

  1187. well, I mean,

  1188. I don't know,

  1189. he's sitting up

  1190. and he's a bit

  1191. of a scam,

  1192. but he predicts

  1193. he's going to

  1194. die in a way

  1195. that only the

  1196. pagan Roman

  1197. authorities can

  1198. actually do,

  1199. and he dies that

  1200. way, vindicating

  1201. his words,

  1202. and then he

  1203. rises from the

  1204. dead.

  1205. And in all

  1206. those cases,

  1207. whether it's

  1208. the emperor,

  1209. whether it's

  1210. the Romans,

  1211. whether it's

  1212. the leaders,

  1213. the Jewish

  1214. leaders,

  1215. everybody is

  1216. acting according

  1217. to their free

  1218. will, and

  1219. they all act

  1220. in a way

  1221. which means

  1222. harm.

  1223. But it ends

  1224. up that God

  1225. uses it for

  1226. good, because

  1227. the death of

  1228. Jesus upon the

  1229. cross is his

  1230. death as the

  1231. Lamb of God

  1232. who takes away

  1233. the sin of the

  1234. world.

  1235. And his

  1236. resurrection is

  1237. the promise of

  1238. the vindication

  1239. and the promise

  1240. of life and

  1241. the hope of

  1242. glory for the

  1243. Christian.

  1244. And so

  1245. everybody uses

  1246. their freedom

  1247. freely, but

  1248. God superintends

  1249. the events by

  1250. providence that

  1251. even though

  1252. everybody in the

  1253. story means evil,

  1254. God brings great

  1255. good out of it.

  1256. It's one of the

  1257. ways that God

  1258. intervenes in the

  1259. world.

  1260. So what happens

  1261. to the child?

  1262. Well, let's look

  1263. verse 14, what

  1264. happens to

  1265. Ishmael.

  1266. So verse 14,

  1267. so Abraham

  1268. rose early in

  1269. the morning and

  1270. took bread and

  1271. a skin of water

  1272. and gave it to

  1273. Hagar, putting it

  1274. on her shoulder

  1275. along with the

  1276. child, and sent

  1277. her away, and

  1278. she departed and

  1279. wandered in the

  1280. wilderness of

  1281. Beersheba.

  1282. Now Abraham is

  1283. taking God at

  1284. his word that he

  1285. will do as he

  1286. said and as he

  1287. has promised.

  1288. We don't know

  1289. how much bread

  1290. she had.

  1291. Archaeologists,

  1292. anthropologists say

  1293. that she probably

  1294. had about what

  1295. we would now

  1296. consider almost

  1297. 12 litres of

  1298. water, which is

  1299. going to last a

  1300. couple of days

  1301. maybe in the

  1302. wilderness, but

  1303. it's not going to

  1304. be enough.

  1305. God has to

  1306. intervene in

  1307. some ways, whether

  1308. it's through

  1309. providence or

  1310. miracle, if that's

  1311. going to happen.

  1312. And we can see

  1313. that Sarah's

  1314. intent was

  1315. murderous.

  1316. She hasn't had

  1317. this word from

  1318. God that Abraham

  1319. has.

  1320. She's quite happy

  1321. if Sarah and

  1322. if Hagar and

  1323. Ishmael meet

  1324. their doom.

  1325. So what

  1326. happens?

  1327. Well, let's

  1328. listen.

  1329. And this story

  1330. which happens, it's

  1331. a beautiful

  1332. illustration of

  1333. the fact that

  1334. Christians believe

  1335. that there's only

  1336. one God, and

  1337. the one God who

  1338. really exists and

  1339. truly exists is the

  1340. only God who can

  1341. answer prayer, and

  1342. that he answers the

  1343. prayer of Christians

  1344. and of Buddhists

  1345. and of Hindus

  1346. and of the

  1347. Jewish people and

  1348. of people with

  1349. boutique

  1350. spiritualities.

  1351. He's the only

  1352. God to hear your

  1353. prayer, the

  1354. triune God.

  1355. There is no

  1356. other.

  1357. And whether you

  1358. acknowledge him

  1359. or not, there is

  1360. only that triune

  1361. God who can hear

  1362. your prayer, and

  1363. only he can

  1364. answer them.

  1365. And it's a

  1366. longer sermon, and

  1367. a different sermon

  1368. to say that

  1369. sometimes he says

  1370. no, sometimes he

  1371. says yes, sometimes

1372. he says not yet, and

  1373. sometimes he says

  1374. yes, but he

  1375. answers it in a

  1376. very, very

  1377. unexpected and

  1378. unanticipated way

  1379. that you might only

  1380. realize many, many,

  1381. quite a bit later

  1382. how he'd answered

  1383. your prayer in an

  1384. unexpected way.

  1385. But let's listen to

  1386. the story, verse

  1387. 15.

  1388. When the water

  1389. and the skin was

  1390. gone, because

  1391. they'd been wandering

  1392. in the wilderness,

  1393. she put the child

  1394. under one of the

  1395. bushes.

1396. Now, I just have to

  1397. pause here for a

  1398. second, and this

  1399. is one of the

  1400. problems, this is

  1401. actually one of the

  1402. ways that this

  1403. version of the

  1404. Bible is very

  1405. helpful, because

  1406. throughout the story

  1407. there's two different

  1408. Hebrew words, and

  1409. when the word boy

  1410. is used, boy

  1411. basically means, so

  1412. later on in the

  1413. Bible, Solomon, when

  1414. he's 40, calls

  1415. himself a boy.

  1416. And so boy

  1417. really doesn't

  1418. describe an actual

  1419. age, it describes

  1420. not being capable,

  1421. it describes not

  1422. being mature enough,

  1423. it describes not

  1424. being worthy enough

  1425. and competent

  1426. enough, and that's

  1427. what the word boy

  1428. means.

  1429. And the word child

  1430. captures this idea

  1431. of the biological

  1432. and, in a sense,

  1433. the maternal or

  1434. the paternal

  1435. relationship.

  1436. And so throughout

  1437. this story, when

  1438. it's emphasizing, I

  1439. mean, if you, you

  1440. know, Louise and

  1441. I, all of our

  1442. children are older,

  1443. like quite a bit

  1444. older, but I just

  1445. said all of our

  1446. children, I called

  1447. them my children,

  1448. even though some of

  1449. them are, you know,

  1450. have children of

  1451. their own.

  1452. But they're still,

  1453. they'll always be our

  1454. children.

  1455. And so throughout

  1456. this whole story,

  1457. when you see child,

  1458. it's emphasizing the

  1459. relationship between

  1460. Hagar and Ishmael.

  1461. And whenever you see

  1462. boy, it's emphasizing

  1463. the fact that they're,

1464. in a sense, of their

  1465. weakness and not being

  1466. competent.

  1467. So back earlier, it's

  1468. not that, in the

  1469. original language, it's

  1470. not the case that

  1471. somehow or another,

  1472. Ishmael got on

  1473. Hagar's shoulders.

  1474. No, no, they left

  1475. together.

1476. The skin of water, the

1477. bread was given to the

1478. two of them and they

  1479. go wandering off.

1480. And when here, when it

  1481. says, when the water,

1482. verse 15, of the skin

1483. was gone and she put

1484. the child under one of

  1485. the bushes, the word

1486. put is all right, but

  1487. it's actually better to

  1488. understand it as

  1489. thrown.

  1490. And if you've ever

  1491. watched any movie of

1492. two people or a group

  1493. of people and they're

  1494. wandering in the

  1495. desert and they're

  1496. about to, their water's

  1497. gone and they're

  1498. getting very, very weak

1499. and close to the point

  1500. of exhaustion, you

  1501. see them holding

  1502. each other and

  1503. supporting each other

1504. up and at the end

1505. it might be that they

1506. just sort of like put

  1507. the person down because

  1508. there's a tiny little

  1509. bit of a shade.

  1510. And that's what's

  1511. being communicated here

  1512. is that Ishmael is

  1513. close to death.

  1514. The water is, the

  1515. lack of water is

  1516. affecting him more

  1517. than Hagar.

  1518. Verse 16, then she

  1519. went and sat down

  1520. opposite him a good

  1521. way off about the

  1522. distance of a

  1523. bow shot.

  1524. For she said, let

1525. me not look on the

  1526. death of the child.

  1527. And as she sat

  1528. opposite him, she

  1529. lifted up her voice

  1530. and wept.

  1531. And God heard the

  1532. voice of the boy.

  1533. He's not Jewish.

  1534. He's not, in a sense,

  1535. from this point of

  1536. view, part of God's

  1537. people, so to speak.

  1538. He's not Jewish.

  1539. He's, yeah, he's not

  1540. Jewish.

  1541. But God hears his

  1542. prayer.

  1543. Listen again, verse

  1544. 17.

  1545. And God heard the

1546. voice of the boy and

1547. the angel of God, in

1548. a sense, another way of

  1549. referring to God, called

1550. to Hagar from heaven and

  1551. said to her, what

  1552. troubles you, Hagar?

1553. Fear not, for God has

1554. heard the voice of the

  1555. boy where he is.

  1556. Up!

1557. Lift up the boy and

1558. hold him fast with your

1559. hand, for I will make

1560. him into a great nation.

  1561. Then God opened her

1562. eyes and she saw a

  1563. well of water.

1564. And she went and filled

1565. the skin with water and

1566. gave the boy a drink.

1567. And God was with the

1568. boy and he grew up and

  1569. lived in the wilderness

  1570. and became an expert

  1571. with the bow.

  1572. He lived in the

  1573. wilderness of Paran and

1574. his mother took a wife

  1575. for him in Egypt.

1576. So one of the things

1577. that we see here is

  1578. that God answers

  1579. Ishmael's prayer.

  1580. You see, there's only

  1581. one God, the Father,

  1582. the Son, the Holy

  1583. Spirit, three persons,

  1584. one God.

  1585. He alone is the

  1586. creator of all things,

  1587. the sustainer of all

  1588. things, sovereign over

  1589. all things.

  1590. And so there's only

  1591. that one true and

  1592. living God that any

  1593. prayer can go to.

  1594. And he hears the

  1595. prayer of the wicked

1596. and the good, the old

1597. and the young, of the

  1598. gay and the straight,

1599. of the Buddhist and the

  1600. Hindu and the Muslim

  1601. and the Christian.

1602. There is only one God

  1603. who can hear everybody's

  1604. prayer.

  1605. And you might wonder

  1606. about that.

  1607. And it doesn't necessarily

1608. the case that he answers

  1609. the prayers of Christians

  1610. with more yeses than

  1611. non-Christians.

  1612. Now that, of course,

  1613. maybe requires a longer

  1614. whole sermon.

1615. I just want to point at

  1616. how this...

1617. Take a step back to

  1618. understand why this is.

  1619. And it connects with

  1620. the gospel.

1621. Imagine that you have a

  1622. friend.

1623. And you have a friend.

  1624. We'll call her Sue.

  1625. You know, and Sue's

  1626. pretty.

  1627. And she's nice.

  1628. And she's pleasant.

1629. And, you know, she has a

  1630. job.

  1631. And she's kind.

  1632. And she's creative.

  1633. And all of that.

1634. But for some reason, no

1635. guy ever asks her out.

1636. And no guy wants to

  1637. marry her.

  1638. And she'd love to

  1639. marry.

1640. But just no guy asks

  1641. Sue out.

  1642. Well, one day, Sue's

  1643. grandmother decides to

1644. buy her a lottery ticket.

  1645. And Sue, to everybody's

  1646. surprise, wins $60 million.

1647. And, of course, it's in

  1648. the paper.

1649. You know, Sue Smith or

  1650. Sue Sinclair wins $60

  1651. million.

1652. And within the next month,

1653. 20 guys want to date her.

1654. 20 guys want to date her.

  1655. Now, you can almost

1656. begin to see how, in

  1657. some ways, winning $60

  1658. million would actually be

  1659. more of a curse than a

  1660. blessing.

1661. Sue has wanted to get

  1662. married.

1663. Now, do they want to

  1664. marry her because she's

1665. Sue or because she has

  1666. $60 million?

1667. How would she even know

  1668. whether that's the case?

1669. I mean, she might actually

1670. even have to go and live

  1671. somewhere and change her

1672. name and pretend she has

1673. no money so that she could

1674. at least find somebody who

1675. would love her for herself

1676. and then have to navigate

  1677. the fact that she

  1678. misrepresented herself and

  1679. that she's actually Sue

1680. Smith and is worth $60

  1681. million plus whatever

1682. interest has been made over

1683. that time period while it

  1684. went on.

  1685. You know, because, you

  1686. know, in a sense, isn't

1687. that more what we desire?

1688. That we desire to be known

1689. for who we are and either

  1690. have people be our

1691. friends for who we are,

1692. not just for what we can

1693. give them, or to have that

  1694. love relationship with

1695. another person who loves us

  1696. for who we are.

1697. And in fact, actually, if you

1698. think about it for a second,

1699. wouldn't you say that if you

  1700. met somebody who'd say they'd

1701. rather have a million dollars

1702. than a husband or a wife who

1703. would love them, know them, and

  1704. love them?

1705. Wouldn't you think that that

  1706. person was shallow?

1707. And you see, this basic

1708. intuition that we have about

1709. ourselves, that we want to

1710. have people love us for

  1711. ourselves, you see, that's

1712. ultimately what God's end game

  1713. is.

1714. That God wants us to begin to

1715. love him for who he is.

1716. He calls us into a love

  1717. relationship with him.

1718. And you see, that's one of the

  1719. reasons why God doesn't

  1720. necessarily say yes to

  1721. Christians' prayers more than

  1722. non-Christians.

1723. See, if it was in fact the

  1724. case that, I don't know, every

1725. time I prayed, or most of the

1726. time I prayed, God gives me a

1727. yes and I get it, people would

1728. start to notice, good grief,

1729. you know, George is very

1730. successful, he has lots of

1731. money, like things are working

1732. out for him, how's it going?

  1733. I'd say, well, I just pray,

  1734. you know, I'm a Christian, and

1735. as a Christian, when I pray, God

  1736. just says yes.

1737. And people will say, I want to

  1738. become a Christian.

1739. Well, they don't want to become

1740. a Christian because they want

1741. to know the triune God.

  1742. They don't want to become a

  1743. Christian because they realize

1744. that they're far from God and

  1745. rebel.

1746. They want to become a Christian

1747. so they can get the stuff they

  1748. want.

1749. But God's desire is to have this

1750. relationship of love with you.

  1751. Now,

1752. just this final story, I'm very

1753. conscious of the time, I took a

1754. couple of minutes to introduce

1755. it, but the Bible doesn't have a

1756. jaundiced view of the human race

1757. that we only want to do evil

1758. things, and it's just a matter of

1759. God merely working through the

1760. evil things that happen so that the

1761. things that he wants to have

  1762. happen, happen.

1763. The Bible is realistic, and to be

1764. realistic, it isn't just that people

1765. desire evil things and that God,

1766. something happens as a result of

  1767. it.

1768. In fact, the Bible recognizes that

1769. sometimes people want to have fair

1770. treaties and do things which are

1771. fair, and that actually happens,

  1772. and it's very interesting.

1773. Look what happens in verse 22, and

1774. it begins by at that time.

1775. So it's actually saying that the

1776. same time this thing is going on

1777. with Hagar and Ishmael, at the same

1778. time this other thing happens as

  1779. well.

1780. So it presents, on one hand, it's

1781. showing that there's this dance,

1782. there's this dance between causality,

1783. that we can cause things, there's this

1784. dance, that there's an ordered

1785. universe, there's this dance of the

1786. fact that God is sovereign, there's

1787. this dance that sometimes God acts by

1788. miracles, but that there's this

1789. providence, and that people, not only

1790. do they act out of evil, but they act

1791. out of good things, and it's going on

1792. at the exact same time.

1793. And look what it says, just very, very

  1794. briefly.

1795. At that time, Abimelech and Phicol, the

1796. commander of his army, said to Abraham,

1797. God is with you in all that you do.

1798. Now therefore swear to me here by God

1799. that you will not deal falsely with

1800. me or with my descendants or with my

1801. posterity, but as I have dealt kindly

1802. with you, so you will deal with me and

1803. with the land where you have sojourned.

1804. And Abraham said, I will swear.

1805. Now God is using providence downstream.

1806. He's used providence downstream to make it

1807. now that there's only going to be Isaac.

1808. It's very clear who that seed is, but also

1809. now that the land is becoming more, in a

1810. sense, a place where Abraham has a true

  1811. claim to it.

1812. Verse 25, when Abraham reproved Abimelech

1813. about a well of water that Abimelech's

1814. servants had seized, Abimelech said, I do

1815. not know who has done this thing.

1816. You did not tell me, and I have not heard

  1817. of it until today.

1818. So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave

1819. them to Abimelech, and the two men made a

  1820. covenant, a treaty, a contract.

1821. Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock

1822. apart, and Abimelech said to Abraham, what

1823. is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that

  1824. you have set apart?

1825. And he said, Abraham said, these seven ewe

1826. lambs you will take from my hand that this

1827. may be a witness for me that I dug this

  1828. well.

1829. Therefore that place was called Beersheba,

1830. because there both of them swore an oath.

1831. So they made a covenant at Beersheba.

1832. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of

1833. his army, rose up and returned to the land of

  1834. the Philistines.

1835. Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba

1836. and called there on the name of the Lord.

1837. In other words, he worshipped the Lord.

1838. And he worshipped the Lord, the everlasting

  1839. God.

1840. And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of

  1841. the Philistines.

1842. So we have this wonderful picture.

1843. You see that the dance that on one hand,

1844. sometimes people wish real ill, but God will

1845. turn that ill into good.

1846. God is provident even though human beings are

1847. using their free will for evil.

1848. And sometimes human beings just want to have a

1849. fair treaty and they want to have friends and

1850. they want to be good neighbors.

1851. And this is also in a way that God can use

1852. sovereignly to have his purposes fulfilled

1853. because he will visit his people and do as he

1854. has said and keep his promises as he has said.

1855. So here's the thing just in summary.

1856. Yes, I've said that God answers the prayers.

  1857. If you're a Buddhist or a Hindu or a Muslim,

1858. the triune God hears and answers your prayers.

1859. And if you're an atheist and you pray,

1860. he hears and answers your prayers.

1861. There's only one God and he's a God who hears

  1862. and he's a God who sees.

1863. But what difference does it make to be a Christian?

1864. See, this is all preparing us, as I said earlier,

1865. about the gospel, about how it all works,

1866. where Jesus died on the cross,

1867. and how even this beginning bit about God has visited us

1868. and done what he had said he's done,

  1869. done what he's promised,

  1870. and he's promised a savior and a deliverer,

  1871. and he's done that.

1872. And he's promised that if anyone turns to Christ,

1873. that he will turn no one away,

1874. that he will take you,

1875. and he will be your savior and your Lord.

1876. He will take you into himself,

1877. and he will come and live within you,

1878. and he will be yours.

  1879. And just like others,

1880. we Christians are called to pray,

1881. but here's the difference that it makes to be a Christian.

1882. There is an everlasting God,

1883. the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

1884. the same God who is everlasting,

1885. the same God who heard Abraham,

  1886. who heard Ishmael,

  1887. is the only God.

1888. There is an everlasting God.

  1889. But he, to me,

  1890. as a Christian,

1891. is not just the everlasting God.

  1892. He is my Father.

1893. He is my Father in heaven,

1894. and I live in his world.

1895. Every day I wake up,

1896. and I wake up in his world.

1897. And I am his child

  1898. by adoption and grace.

  1899. He,

1900. when I put my faith and trust in Jesus,

1901. I become adopted as his child,

1902. and I only become his child

1903. by his grace to me.

  1904. I become his child

  1905. because of John 3, 16.

  1906. For God,

  1907. the words of Jesus,

1908. for God so loved the world

1909. that he gave his only begotten Son

1910. to the end that all who believe in him

  1911. will not perish,

  1912. but have everlasting life.

  1913. So,

1914. the everlasting God is my Father.

1915. I live in his world.

  1916. He is with me,

1917. and he loves to hear my prayers.

1918. And he holds me in the hollow

1919. in the palm of his hand.

1920. And nothing will ever cause him

  1921. to let me go.

1922. And I have the hope of glory

1923. because even if I have very hard things

1924. that I have to face,

1925. I don't have to face them alone.

1926. I face them with my Father,

1927. and he will bring me,

  1928. he will bring me

  1929. into his kingdom

  1930. and into eternal glory,

1931. not because of my strength,

  1932. but by his.

  1933. So,

  1934. every day,

1935. I am invited to live.

  1936. And you,

1937. if you are a Christian,

  1938. are invited to live

  1939. in your Father's world.

  1940. Let's pray.

  1941. Father,

1942. pour out the Holy Spirit upon us.

  1943. Help us to know

1944. that you hear our prayers,

1945. that you love to hear

1946. the prayer of your children.

  1947. Help us to know

1948. that this is your world,

1949. that you are our Father in heaven,

1950. but this is your world,

1951. and that you are sovereign,

1952. and that we can live today

  1953. and every day

  1954. as your child

  1955. by adoption and grace,

  1956. following Jesus,

  1957. our Savior and Lord,

1958. the one who redeemed us,

1959. and empowered by the Holy Spirit,

  1960. that you give

  1961. willingly and lovingly

  1962. and powerfully

1963. to all who become your children

  1964. by adoption and grace.

  1965. Help us, Father,

1966. to live in such a way.

  1967. And we ask this

  1968. in Jesus' name.

  1969. Amen.
