  1. Father, we confess before you that...

  2. Father, I guess I'm sort of forcing us to confess before you

  3. that most of the time we think we know who we are

  4. and we sort of recognize ourselves.

  5. But, Father, you know that many times we, in fact,

  6. don't really understand or recognize ourselves.

  7. And we ask, Lord, that your Holy Spirit would do a very gracious

  8. but powerful and gentle work in each one of our lives

  9. and in the life of our church as a whole,

  10. that your Holy Spirit would work in our lives,

  11. that you would bring this word deeply into our hearts

  12. and that you would bring the gospel deeply into our hearts

  13. so that we would see who we really are

  14. and that in seeing who we really are,

  15. we would call out to you and flee to you for refuge.

  16. And we give you thanks and praise, Father,

  17. that when we find refuge in you,

  18. we start to become as you truly intended us to be

  19. and you fit us for heaven.

  20. So we ask, Lord, that you would do this gentle

  21. but merciful and powerful work in our lives.

  22. And we ask this in the name of Jesus,

  23. your Son and our Savior.

  24. Amen.

  25. Please be seated.

  26. Actually, it's sort of a very fitting analogy for the sermon,

  27. but this is very unbalanced and it's very, very disconcerting,

  28. which I'll try to ignore.

  29. But it's probably just in the providence of God

  30. that it's here like this because it sort of fits with the sermon.

  31. As many of you know, or some of you know,

  32. I spend a lot of time in coffee shops and I work on my sermon

  33. and eventually get into different conversations with people about that

  34. where they find out I'm a pastor

  35. and they'll ask me questions about what it means to be a pastor.

  36. It's very common when I speak to people who are under 40

  37. that they have never been to a church service,

  38. like in their entire life.

  39. The little tiny things they might know about churches

  40. is if they happen to watch a church,

  41. something in the movies or television

  42. that shows a bit of a church service,

  43. but they've never been and they don't really know what goes on.

  44. So sometimes they'll ask me, like, what I do?

  45. What do we do on a Sunday morning?

  46. Like I always invite them to come or to watch online

  47. and maybe one of them are watching online today.

  48. And so one of the things sometimes I try to describe a sermon to them

  49. and I have to confess most of the time I flub it.

  50. I don't do a good job.

  51. So it's after I've failed

  52. and I try to sort of recalibrate in my mind how to talk about it.

  53. And so sometimes what I say is I'll say something like this.

  54. And I'd say a different thing if I'm talking to a devout Buddhist

  55. or a devout Jew or a devout Muslim.

  56. They have sort of different categories that I have to try to talk to.

  57. But often what I'll try to say, if I have my wits about me,

  58. is I'll say something like,

  59. it might surprise you to know that we Christians agree with agnostics

  60. and skeptics about something very, very important.

  61. We're in 100% agreement with them.

  62. We're in 100% agreement with agnostics and skeptics

  63. that the idea that human beings, mere human beings,

  64. could somehow ascend up to a big transcendent God

  65. and somehow or another come up with terms and ideas

  66. and concepts that sort of fit or capture him,

  67. that that's sort of like a vain type of thing

  68. in terms of it's vain you think you're special,

  69. but vain because it's fruitless.

  70. It can't possibly work.

  71. If God is this big transcendent God,

  72. there's just no way that we human beings could actually reach

  73. him, her, it, or whatever.

  74. And I said, we actually Christians,

  75. it's probably going to surprise you.

  76. It usually does surprise them, actually.

  77. They don't expect me to say that we agree

  78. with agnostics and skeptics about that.

  79. But then I say, but the difference is,

  80. and I said, if you think about it for a second,

  81. it makes sense.

  82. The difference is that we think that God has spoken to us.

  83. Like, if you think about it,

  84. if God is really that big and all-knowing,

  85. it's possible that he could speak to us.

  86. He could pick the right words for us to know.

  87. And then I say, you know,

  88. some other time we can talk about why we believe that,

  89. but that's what Christians believe.

  90. So I said, if you think about it,

  91. it makes sense that when we gather together,

  92. that part of what we do when we gather together

  93. is actually take something that God has spoken to us

  94. and try to think about it

  95. and see how it applies to our lives.

  96. And often people say, oh, like,

  97. I mean, obviously they've never thought about it.

  98. They've never been to a church in their entire life.

  99. And they go, oh, I mean, that's sort of,

  100. you know, different.

  101. And so, you know, and then I'll say,

  102. but there's a bit of a problem.

  103. And I said, part of the problem is,

  104. because they'll maybe say,

  105. well, I thought the Bible was written long ago.

  106. And I'll talk a little bit about how,

  107. if you think about it,

  108. that if God really is,

  109. if there really is a God,

  110. like the triune God,

  111. that's big and all-powerful and all-knowing,

  112. then it's possible for him to say words

  113. that could speak to every generation

  114. and every people group.

  115. And I said, but then sometimes,

  116. in fact, I just recently had a bit of a conversation

  117. just a couple of weeks ago with somebody.

  118. I said, so part of the thing that we need to do,

  119. I said, is you sort of have to make a bit of a bridge.

  120. And I said, you know,

  121. and it's not that surprising,

  122. because sometimes, you know,

  123. people say things,

  124. and we don't think it really applies to us.

  125. And then later on,

  126. we realize it really does apply to us.

  127. And I said, so part of what I do,

  128. when you see me here trying to look up in this space,

  129. trying to, looking a bit confused,

  130. and all of that,

  131. I'm trying to think of how do I bridge,

  132. how do I get that piece of what God has said

  133. that might have been written a long time ago,

  134. and how do I get people

  135. who are sitting in Ottawa in 2022

  136. to realize it's speaking to them?

  137. So, for instance,

  138. like if you put the,

  139. we're going to look at Psalm 2,

  140. you're going to see instantly what I mean

  141. as a perfect example,

  142. if we just look at Psalm 2,

  143. which is the psalm I'm looking at today,

  144. it's the beginning of a summer series,

  145. or sort of the,

  146. yes, in many ways,

  147. the beginning of a summer series,

  148. we're going to look at different psalms

  149. over the summer.

  150. And if you turn to Psalm 2,

  151. here we're reading something

  152. that was written 3,000 years ago,

  153. give or take a couple of years,

  154. 3,000 years ago,

  155. and you listen to it,

  156. and here's how it begins.

  157. Verse 1,

  158. Why do the nations rage,

  159. and the peoples plot in vain?

  160. The kings of the earth set themselves,

  161. and the rulers take counsel together

  162. against the Lord,

  163. and against his anointed,

  164. saying,

  165. let us burst their bonds apart,

  166. and cast away their cords from us.

  167. Like, look at verse 1 again,

  168. why do the nations rage,

  169. and the peoples plot in vain?

  170. So, if you think about it,

  171. just for a second,

  172. take off your holy hat,

  173. take off your holy clothes,

  174. and it just doesn't seem true.

  175. Right?

  176. I mean, it just doesn't seem true.

  177. Or maybe you think of it,

  178. and you say,

  179. you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

  180. that describes,

  181. that describes the MAGA Trump people.

  182. Or, depending on your other,

  183. you know, that describes

  184. all those people going out

  185. and demonstrating right now,

  186. you know, against Roe versus Wade.

  187. Yeah, that describes them.

  188. Like, and so maybe we look at it

  189. and think about how it describes them,

  190. but we don't look at it

  191. and think about how it describes us.

  192. It seems like it's too big a gap.

  193. It doesn't seem like a realistic thing to say.

  194. Okay.

  195. Well, here's the thing.

  196. Now, I meant to have my service,

  197. my phone,

  198. my family brought me my phone

  199. just at the very start of the service,

  200. so I didn't have a chance to look it up,

  201. but it maybe is even better

  202. that I don't look it up.

  203. There's a song

  204. that if I start to say the words to it,

  205. it is so well known to you

  206. that, in fact,

  207. if I started to sing the first verse,

  208. most of you could sing along with me

  209. even though the words aren't up on the screen.

  210. And even though I didn't have my phone with me,

  211. if I had a whiteboard,

  212. I'd probably by myself

  213. be able to put down

  214. most of the lyrics to the song,

  215. but I'd be willing to bet $100

  216. that with none of us looking at our phones,

  217. we could put all of the lyrics of the song

  218. up on the whiteboard

  219. within about a minute or two,

  220. and we could do it effortlessly.

  221. And it's a song

  222. which virtually every Canadian knows,

  223. and my guess is

  224. that almost every single one of you knows,

  225. and you know it very well.

  226. Imagine there's no heaven.

  227. It's easy if you try.

  228. No hell below us.

  229. Above us, only sky.

  230. Imagine, and it goes on.

  231. Am I not correct?

  232. Imagine there's no heaven.

  233. It's easy if you could all join up with me in singing it,

  234. and we'd all be able to put it up on the screen.

  235. And here's the other thing about that song.

  236. And I...

  237. It's not just that we know the lyrics to the song,

  238. but that most people,

  239. when they sing the song,

  240. have a deep emotional connection to that song.

  241. In fact, in an odd way,

  242. there's almost something transcendent

  243. or religious

  244. about that song.

  245. It moves you.

  246. It tugs at your heart.

  247. Imagine there's no heaven.

  248. It's easy if you try.

  249. No hell.

  250. No hell below us.

  251. Above us, only sky.

  252. It speaks to us

  253. at a very deep level.

  254. But that song

  255. is actually saying

  256. what verses 1 to 3 said

  257. in a modern singable form

  258. that tugs at your heart.

  259. Why do the nations rage or plot

  260. and the peoples plot in vain?

  261. That's God's comment.

  262. We work together,

  263. but the bottom line is,

  264. verse 3,

  265. let us burst their bonds apart,

  266. that is the God,

  267. that is the Lord

  268. and is anointed,

  269. and cast away their cords from us.

  270. Let us live.

  271. Let us live

  272. as if

  273. there is no God,

  274. there is no hell below us,

  275. there is no heaven up above,

  276. there is just us.

  277. Let us live in that way.

  278. And when we sing

  279. or hear that song,

  280. it tugs at our heart,

  281. it speaks to us.

  282. In fact,

  283. that song shows

  284. that verses 1 to 3

  285. of Psalm chapter 2

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  286. are deeply true.

  287. Not only are they deeply true

  288. of most Canadians,

  289. it is deeply true

  290. of you and me.

  291. Because if we're honest,

  292. there's something in that song

  293. that tugs at our heart too.

  294. To cast,

  295. to live as if God does not exist,

  296. to cast off his bonds,

  297. to cast off his cords.

  298. Now one of the things

  299. about the Bible

  300. is that as I,

  301. I think I learned it

  302. from Jackie Hill Perry

  303. that the Bible

  304. is both a window

  305. and a mirror.

  306. And it's a window

  307. in the sense that

  308. it opens up the door,

  309. the window to us

  310. to start to understand

  311. and see the world

  312. as it really is.

  313. And it's a mirror

  314. because it begins

  315. to reveal to us

  316. what we really look like

  317. and what we're really like

  318. at the level of the heart

  319. in the context

  320. of the living God.

  321. And that's what this psalm

  322. does in a very,

  323. very powerful way.

  324. It's a psalm that,

  325. with this,

  326. with Psalm 1,

  327. which we're going to look at

  328. next week,

  329. it's the introduction

  330. to the Psalter.

  331. It tells us how to enter

  332. into the Psalter.

  333. The Psalter is the book of Psalms

  334. and the book of Psalms

  335. are the songs

  336. that God wants us to sing.

  337. They're the prayers

  338. that God wants us to pray.

  339. And at the same time

  340. they teach us

  341. and they inform us.

  342. And one of the reasons

  343. that we can see

  344. why this psalm

  345. is here right at the beginning

  346. is it teaches us

  347. that while we're trying

  348. to learn how to sing

  349. the songs that God

  350. wants his people to sing

  351. and to pray the prayers

  352. that God wants us to pray,

  353. there is a part of us

  354. that doesn't want God

  355. to exist.

  356. Pascal,

  357. who wrote a famous

  358. sort of collection

  359. of thoughts

  360. of apologetics,

  361. I think it was

  362. in the 17th century,

  363. but I can't remember

  364. if it was the 17th

  365. or the 18th century

  366. in France.

  367. He has this very powerful thing

  368. where he says

  369. that if you want to talk

  370. about the Christian faith

  371. to people who are

  372. outside the Christian faith,

  373. you have to deal

  374. with two issues.

  375. One issue is that

  376. everybody has reasons,

  377. often very good reasons,

  378. why the Christian God

  379. cannot be true.

  380. But the other thing,

  381. which most people

  382. don't recognize,

  383. is that most people

  384. don't want

  385. the triune God

  386. to exist.

  387. They don't want

  388. Christianity to be true.

  389. They will accept

  390. just about anything

  391. other than accept

  392. the Christian faith.

  393. And Psalm 2

  394. is expressing that to us

  395. as a way for us

  396. as we enter into

  397. worship and prayer

  398. is to acknowledge

  399. that there is part of us

  400. that likes to cast off

  401. God's bonds

  402. and his courts.

  403. So how does God react?

  404. That we wouldn't

  405. want him to exist.

  406. All of verses 4 to 12

  407. talk about it,

  408. but we'll look at it

  409. in chunks.

  410. Let's look at the first thing

  411. is going to be very surprising.

  412. And actually,

  413. many of us find it troubling

  414. and many of us

  415. probably find it offensive.

  416. Look at verse 4.

  417. He who sits

  418. in the heavens

  419. laughs.

  420. One moment.

  421. So some of us

  422. don't want to recognize

  423. the fact that we

  424. have part of us

  425. that really

  426. the song imagined

  427. speaks to us

  428. at a deep level.

  429. And others,

  430. of course,

  431. would be very,

  432. very public about,

  433. you know,

  434. I've seen people

  435. about saying

  436. how they're looking

  437. forward to going to hell

  438. because all the cool people

  439. and their best friends

  440. will be there.

  441. And people can be

  442. very sort of,

  443. you know,

  444. ha-ha about it.

  445. And that's fine.

  446. But the surprising thing

  447. here is what the psalm

  448. reveals is that

  449. God laughs at this.

  450. But look,

  451. and it's a bit offensive.

  452. Look,

  453. again,

  454. verse 4,

  455. he who sits

  456. in the heavens

  457. laughs.

  458. The Lord holds

  459. them in derision.

  460. I mean,

  461. he just,

  462. he laughs

  463. like because

  464. it's ridiculous.

  465. Verse 5,

  466. then he will speak

  467. to them in his wrath.

  468. And that's a troubling

  469. idea for Canadians.

  470. And terrify them

  471. in his fury,

  472. saying,

  473. as for me,

  474. I have set

  475. my king

  476. on Zion,

  477. my holy hill.

  478. So it's interesting

  479. that this verse

  480. 4 to 6,

  481. it begins with a picture

  482. of heaven laughing

  483. and it ends up

  484. with God's response,

  485. not just as laughing,

  486. but there's also anger

  487. at what's going on

  488. by whether we human beings

  489. would live in this.

  490. And his response

  491. is that he sends

  492. his king

  493. to the earth.

  494. It begins

  495. with something

  496. transcendent

  497. and it ends

  498. with something

  499. very,

  500. very much

  501. among us.

  502. But we're bothered

  503. by some of this stuff.

  504. Well, in terms of,

  505. let's look at the thing

  506. about the laughing.

  507. We think this is

  508. sort of wrong for God,

  509. but it's something

  510. that we can actually

  511. deeply relate to.

  512. Imagine for a moment

  513. between the two services

  514. the places may be empty.

  515. And that's what it's like.

  516. We have a service

  517. at 8,

  518. very small little,

  519. very 1662,

  520. book of common prayer,

  521. the,

  522. thy,

  523. thou,

  524. dost language.

  525. And then there's

  526. a period of time

  527. when there's nobody

  528. here between the 9

  529. and the 10 o'clock service.

  530. And let's say Barbara's gone.

  531. And I think I'm here

  532. all by myself.

  533. And I start to do

  534. my best imitation

  535. of U2's Bono singing

  536. interspersed with how,

  537. what's the guitarist's name?

  538. Slash or something like that.

  539. How Slash plays his guitar.

  540. So I'm up here

  541. singing away,

  542. thinking I'm all by myself,

  543. playing the guitar,

  544. doing all the moves.

  545. And all of a sudden

  546. I discover that the

  547. more needs have all

  548. come in very quietly

  549. and are watching me.

  550. They could turn off

  551. all the lights,

  552. the room would be

  553. a bright red

  554. from the color of my face.

  555. Now they wouldn't

  556. all laugh at me

  557. because they're very nice,

  558. but imagine it was

  559. somebody else.

  560. And they would just think

  561. I'm completely

  562. and utterly ridiculous.

  563. Here I am,

  564. a man of a certain age,

  565. acting as if I'm

  566. a super rock star

  567. and it's just ridiculous

  568. and you would laugh

  569. and you all understand it.

  570. Well, that's,

  571. now you understand

  572. a little bit about

  573. your pretension and mine

  574. that I don't need God,

  575. I don't need a creator,

  576. I don't need a sustainer,

  577. I don't need oxygen.

  578. Whoa, whoa, whoa,

  579. that's wrong.

  580. Yes, you do.

  581. I don't need gravity.

  582. I'm just the God

  583. of the universe.

  584. No, no wonder God laughs.

  585. And what about the anger?

  586. I was talking to somebody

  587. about this just about

  588. a month or so ago

  589. and I said,

  590. imagine,

  591. I said that you had

  592. had some kids

  593. and they're your kids

  594. and so, you know,

  595. you changed their diapers

  596. when they were young,

  597. you, you know,

  598. you cared for them,

  599. you got them to school,

  600. you gave them sporting events,

  601. you gave them allowance

  602. and then for whatever reason

  603. you're very wealthy

  604. and you just continue

  605. to give them money

  606. and they don't work

  607. and you put them up

  608. in a very, very fine house

  609. and they get all the money

  610. they want every time

  611. they go to their bank account

  612. the money's there

  613. that they need

  614. and they live in a house

  615. and every single thing

  616. is coming from you

  617. and you are completely

  618. and utterly supporting them

  619. and then you discover

  620. that what they do

  621. is they go around

  622. telling people

  623. how bad and evil

  624. and how much you suck

  625. and how they're responsible

  626. for all this money,

  627. they're making it,

  628. they're sustaining it

  629. and you might be

  630. very angry at them.

  631. In fact,

  632. if you would be

  633. like most people,

  634. if you hear how much

  635. they're disparaging you

  636. and saying how they,

  637. you know,

  638. they're an orphan

  639. and that you're dead,

  640. they don't even have a dad,

  641. like you might just say,

  642. well, I've had enough

  643. of them,

  644. I'm going to cut them off,

  645. you'd be angry at them.

  646. So God's response

  647. to human beings

  648. thinking that we can

  649. be our own gods

  650. is actually very,

  651. that makes,

  652. like that's not

  653. an outrageous thing

  654. for God to do.

  655. But it isn't just

  656. that he laughs

  657. and it isn't just

  658. that he's anger,

  659. there's something deeper

  660. that's going on here.

  661. Now, just before I read

  662. the next bit,

  663. and if you have your Bibles

  664. you can already see it,

  665. but if you're just looking

  666. up on the screen

  667. you have to wait.

  668. You know what I tell

  669. my Jewish friends is,

  670. you know,

  671. we Christians accept

  672. what you call the Tanakh

  673. and we call it

  674. the Old Testament

  675. and we accept

  676. that that's God speaking.

  677. but we obviously,

  678. we believe that

  679. because of Jesus

  680. and his coming,

  681. because he is the Messiah,

  682. the anointed one,

  683. that there's also now

  684. more words

  685. that God has spoken to us

  686. and we call that

  687. the New Testament.

  688. And you might or might

  689. not know this,

  690. but what we call

  691. the New Testament

  692. quotes parts

  693. of the Old Testament

  694. or makes allusions to it.

  695. And the Bible text

  696. in the Old Testament

  697. that's most quoted

  698. in the New Testament

  699. is Psalm 110.

  700. It is found

  701. directly quoted

  702. or alluded to

  703. far more than

  704. any other text

  705. in the Old Testament.

  706. And the second most quoted text

  707. in the New Testament

  708. from the Old Testament

  709. is Psalm 2.

  710. Well, look at these

  711. next few verses

  712. and you'll understand why.

  713. Look at verse 7.

  714. So this is the king, right?

  715. As for me,

  716. I have set my king

  717. on Zion,

  718. my holy hill.

  719. And the king is now saying,

  720. I will tell of the decree.

  721. The Lord said to me,

  722. you are my son.

  723. Today I have begotten you.

  724. Ask of me

  725. and I will make

  726. the nations

  727. your heritage

  728. and the ends

  729. of the earth

  730. your possession.

  731. You will break them

  732. with a rod of iron

  733. and dash them in pieces

  734. like a potter's vessel.

  735. Now you can,

  736. those of you

  737. who are Christians,

  738. you can see that

  739. Jesus quotes that directly.

  740. It's part of the text

  741. in the New Testament

  742. to use about

  743. the divinity of Jesus.

  744. A riddle,

  745. a puzzle

  746. which is there

  747. in the Old Testament

  748. that only Jesus

  749. actually answers.

  750. But we're very bothered

  751. by this idea

  752. that the coming of God

  753. and of his Messiah

  754. to earth

  755. would lead to things

  756. being smashed.

  757. But here's a way

  758. to see it.

  759. In fact, actually,

  760. I've sort of jumped ahead

  761. a little bit

  762. in terms of the overall sermon.

  763. The sermon,

  764. the big idea

  765. of the sermon

  766. is that human rebellion

  767. against the triune God

  768. will only have

  769. one of two ends.

  770. Ruin,

  771. you are ruined,

  772. or you seeking refuge in him.

  773. You are ruined,

  774. or you realizing

  775. that you're heading to ruin,

  776. you seeking refuge in him.

  777. So imagine for a second

  778. you don't like

  779. the law of gravity.

  780. You hate the law of gravity.

  781. You find the law of gravity

  782. deeply offensive.

  783. You think it shouldn't be there.

  784. You think that by your power

  785. of your mind

  786. that it should not be there.

  787. You should be able to fly.

  788. You should be able to soar.

  789. You should be able to be like a god.

  790. And you can say that

  791. as you step off

  792. of a 12-story building.

  793. And you can shake your fist

  794. at gravity

  795. all the way down.

  796. You can scream at gravity.

  797. You can curse gravity.

  798. You can pretend you're flying.

  799. But you are falling.

  800. And you will end

  801. dead on the ground.

  802. The fact of the matter is

  803. that if in fact

  804. the triune god

  805. does exist

  806. and because every human being

  807. will die

  808. coming face to face

  809. with the triune god

  810. is an unavoidable reality.

  811. And you will either

  812. crash

  813. against that triune god

  814. in fact actually

  815. if up until now

  816. up until the end of verse 9

  817. all you can see

  818. is the only option

  819. is smashing.

  820. That you have your pretensions

  821. about God not existing

  822. and whether or not

  823. that's very conscious

  824. or whether or not

  825. it's something unconscious

  826. that you never recognize

  827. others might see in you

  828. or at times

  829. you start to realize

  830. that you don't

  831. you know

  832. like this is my body

  833. you know my body myself

  834. good grief

  835. I mean

  836. my body myself

  837. and if the psalm

  838. was just to end

  839. at verse 9

  840. it would present

  841. a very bleak

  842. and despairing

  843. view

  844. of the human

  845. project

  846. that all we human beings

  847. can do

  848. is to rebel against God

  849. whether conscious or not

  850. wish that he wasn't there

  851. and at the end of the day

  852. really all we are

  853. is people falling

  854. from a 12 story building

  855. railing against

  856. gravity

  857. and we lose

  858. gravity wins

  859. and we will be ruined

  860. but the psalm

  861. doesn't end

  862. at verse 9

  863. it has one more section

  864. one more trio

  865. of verses

  866. let's look at what they are

  867. now therefore

  868. verse 10

  869. oh kings be wise

  870. oh there's a possibility

  871. of wisdom

  872. be warned

  873. oh rulers of the earth

  874. serve the lord

  875. with fear

  876. and rejoice

  877. with trembling

  878. kiss the sun

  879. lest he be angry

  880. and you perish

  881. in the way

  882. for his wrath

  883. is quickly kindled

  884. and what's the final word

  885. blessed are all

  886. who take refuge

  887. in him

  888. what is the final word

  889. before you start

  890. to read the rest

  891. of the psalter

  892. is blessed

  893. are all

  894. who take refuge

  895. in him

  896. now

  897. one of the things

  898. that the rest

  899. of the psalter

  900. you know

  901. many of us

  902. and this is where

  903. that song

  904. imagine

  905. is so powerful

  906. right

  907. imagine there's

  908. no heaven

  909. it's easy

  910. if you try

  911. no hell below us

  912. above us only sky

  913. and you go on

  914. and on and on

  915. imagine all the people

  916. and you know

  917. all of this

  918. etc etc

  919. and the idea

  920. of serving the lord

  921. with fear

  922. and rejoicing

  923. with trembling

  924. is deeply offensive

  925. that's not what

  926. we want to hear

  927. and one of the things

  928. that the rest

  929. of the psalter

  930. will make clear

  931. to us

  932. is that human beings

  933. don't have a choice

  934. about serving

  935. and the other word

  936. for serving

  937. is worshipping

  938. that the fact

  939. of the matter

  940. is

  941. is that I don't

  942. have a choice

  943. between serving

  944. the triune god

  945. and not

  946. the choice

  947. between me

  948. is that I'm

  949. going to serve

  950. somebody

  951. or something

  952. I can't help

  953. but serve

  954. something

  955. or somebody

  956. and I might be

  957. serving my ego

  958. I might be serving

  959. my career

  960. I might be serving

  961. art

  962. I might be serving

  963. money

  964. I might be serving

  965. my politics

  966. I might be serving

  967. a certain type

  968. of ideology

  969. I might be serving

  970. technology

  971. or science

  972. or whatever

  973. I might be serving

  974. my wife

  975. or living in

  976. complete and utter

  977. terror about what

  978. my kids

  979. or my neighbors

  980. say

  981. and I am serving

  982. something

  983. so the question

  984. isn't will I serve

  985. or not

  986. is what are you

  987. in fact serving

  988. and the rest of the

  989. Psalter will start

  990. to make that

  991. very clear

  992. as you read

  993. through it

  994. and as you pray

  995. through it

  996. and as you sing

  997. through it

  998. and this particular

  999. thing of kiss the sun

  1000. one of the things

  1001. here which the psalm

  1002. is remembering

  1003. and one of the

  1004. problems I have

  1005. sometimes when I'm

  1006. talking to people

  1007. about the Christian

  1008. faith is I realize

1009. I can start to talk

  1010. about the Christian

  1011. faith as if it's

  1012. just ideas

  1013. if it's just

  1014. principles

  1015. it's just certain

  1016. things about how

  1017. culture or morality

  1018. or philosophical

  1019. types of ideas

  1020. but it's not

  1021. it's about a person

1022. I mean it is about

  1023. those things

  1024. there are ideas

  1025. there are concepts

  1026. and precepts

  1027. and practices

  1028. and processes

  1029. and that matter

1030. but at the end of the day

  1031. it's a person

  1032. and this word

  1033. kiss the sun

  1034. it's an image

  1035. of homage

  1036. of acknowledging

  1037. your sovereign

  1038. lord

  1039. to whom

  1040. it is

  1041. proper for you

  1042. to serve

  1043. and bring glory

  1044. and to listen

  1045. to and to follow

  1046. and it's an intimate

  1047. image

  1048. I had

  1049. some people

  1050. who were from

  1051. a French background

  1052. who were at the

  1053. earlier service

1054. and I shared with them

  1055. and I said

  1056. in a French culture

  1057. you don't just

  1058. sort of say

  1059. you know

  1060. like this

  1061. or shake your hand

  1062. it's the

  1063. the kiss

  1064. on either side

  1065. it's close

  1066. it's personal

  1067. you're in their space

  1068. it's a sign

  1069. of the fact

  1070. that you're willing

  1071. to be completely

  1072. and utterly

  1073. defenseless

  1074. and close

  1075. and that's the image

  1076. the psalms

  1077. when they're prayed

  1078. and as they're

  1079. sung

  1080. and as they're

  1081. reflected on

  1082. it's not just ideas

  1083. there's a king

  1084. who creates a kingdom

  1085. and his kingdom

  1086. is all centered

  1087. around him

  1088. and it's

  1089. it's relating to him

  1090. it's not a kingdom

  1091. where you just

  1092. sort of do things

  1093. as if the king

  1094. is gone

  1095. that's the beginning

  1096. of the psalm

  1097. casting his bonds

  1098. asunder

  1099. there's always a king

1100. that we are to be

  1101. close to

  1102. and intimate with

  1103. and that we are

  1104. to pay homage to

  1105. and when it says

  1106. that his wrath

  1107. in verse 12

  1108. is quick

  1109. that we might

  1110. get

  1111. we experience his anger

  1112. that we might perish

  1113. and that's the thing

  1114. about the ruin

  1115. and then his wrath

  1116. is quickly kindled

  1117. the image there

  1118. isn't that God

  1119. is very very thin

  1120. skinned

1121. can fly into a rage

  1122. in a moment

  1123. the issue is this

1124. that in the next 30 seconds

1125. I could have an aneurysm

  1126. and to your shock

  1127. collapse dead

  1128. that we don't know

  1129. when we will appear

  1130. before God

  1131. face to face

  1132. we might think

  1133. we know

  1134. I might think

  1135. you know

  1136. I'm having to plan

  1137. eventually for my retirement

  1138. and all

  1139. and you know

  1140. I think I'll plan

  1141. a retirement plan

  1142. until I'm 95

  1143. and all of that

  1144. type of stuff

  1145. but I don't know

  1146. I don't know

1147. if I'm going to die

  1148. on my way home

  1149. I don't know

  1150. part of the thing

  1151. that gets people

  1152. like if you

  1153. in Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  1154. there's this sort of

  1155. scary story

  1156. of a man

  1157. by the name

  1158. of Ananias and Sapphira

  1159. who dropped dead

  1160. and it's a whole other topic

  1161. for another sermon

1162. but one of the things

  1163. that commentators

1164. and all try to do

1165. is try to make it look

  1166. like what

  1167. what Ananias and Sapphira

  1168. did was so unbelievably

  1169. terribly wrong

1170. that God had to kill them

  1171. but that is not

1172. the point of the story

1173. the fact of the matter is

  1174. is that it was

  1175. a garden variety

  1176. type of bad thing

  1177. just garden variety

  1178. the simple little

  1179. white lie

  1180. that you or I

  1181. take or make

  1182. and we never even

  1183. give it a second's thought

  1184. and the point

  1185. of the story is

  1186. you never know

1187. when you're going to appear

  1188. before the living God

  1189. you just don't

  1190. it can spring up

  1191. in a moment

  1192. and you're there

  1193. I'm driving along

  1194. thinking how

1195. I'm going to do this

1196. I'm going to do that

  1197. I'm so great

  1198. I'm do this

1199. and the next thing I know

1200. I'm before the living God

  1201. I'm before him

  1202. all of a sudden

1203. in the blink of an eye

1204. in the twinkle of an eye

1205. but notice how the psalm ends

  1206. right now George

1207. if you are outside of Christ

  1208. you are a man

  1209. who stepped off

  1210. of the tallest building

  1211. in the world

  1212. and you are falling

  1213. and you might think

  1214. you're God

  1215. you might think

  1216. you're flying

1217. you might shake your fist

1218. at the true and living God

1219. but the fact of the matter is

1220. is that you only have

  1221. one destiny

1222. and that is to land

  1223. in the ground

  1224. but the psalm said

  1225. there is another option

  1226. why did God send

  1227. his son

  1228. his anointed one

  1229. to his anointed

  1230. to his Zion hill

1231. the hill where he died

  1232. why did he send

  1233. his only begotten son

  1234. why did he send

  1235. our king

  1236. and he sent

  1237. his king

  1238. that he might drink

  1239. the cup

  1240. that you deserve

  1241. he sent his son

  1242. and his king

  1243. that you and I

1244. might find refuge in him

  1245. you and I

1246. by simple act of faith

  1247. might find our refuge

  1248. in him

1249. just as I sort of bring

  1250. the sermon

  1251. to a close

  1252. what if you think

  1253. back to verse 2

  1254. let us burst

  1255. their bonds

  1256. apart

  1257. and cast away

  1258. their cords

  1259. from us

  1260. what is it

  1261. you discover

  1262. when you come

  1263. to the Lord

  1264. for refuge

  1265. what are those

  1266. cruel

  1267. and irksome

  1268. terrible bonds

  1269. and cords

  1270. that the Lord

  1271. has for you

  1272. and me

  1273. truth

  1274. the Lord wants

  1275. to bind us

  1276. with truth

  1277. what do I want

  1278. in the vanity

  1279. of my imaginations

  1280. I want lies

  1281. he wants to bind

  1282. me with the truth

  1283. he wants to

  1284. bind me with love

1285. when I want to hate

  1286. he wants to bind

  1287. me with goodness

  1288. when I would

  1289. rather do things

  1290. which are purely

  1291. and utterly

  1292. pursuing my ego

  1293. he wants to

  1294. bind me with beauty

  1295. when I want to

  1296. choose ugliness

  1297. ugliness from my lips

  1298. or ugliness

  1299. in my mind

  1300. or in my imagination

  1301. he wants to bind

  1302. me with beauty

  1303. he wants to bind

  1304. me with justice

  1305. when I would

  1306. rather have

  1307. injustice

  1308. he wants to

  1309. bind me with mercy

  1310. when I would

  1311. rather show

  1312. no mercy

  1313. he wants to

1314. bind me with the gift of forgiveness, when I would rather show no forgiveness but show resentment.

1315. Those are the terrible, terrible, terrible, atrocious things that the living, true and

1316. living God wants to bind you and me with. Those are the cords we want to cast away.

1317. And the Lord looks at you and me and says, gosh, George, you need to find refuge in me,

1318. the way, the truth, and the life, the true, the good, the beautiful. I who am just yet merciful,

1319. whose goodness is beauty and whose beauty is goodness. And we need that. We don't need to

1320. have those cast aside. I need those to bind me. And you know the wonderful thing? I was sharing

1321. this with somebody. We got on a bit of a sidetrack. This is a non-Christian. This is a couple of

1322. months ago. And I said, you know, one of the wonderful things about the Bible and things

1323. like this is if you think about it for a second, all the Bible says is you shall not tell a lie.

1324. And my implication is it tells you you should tell the truth. But you think about it for a

1325. second. You can sing. You can write poetry. You can write a novel. You can write laws.

1326. Just don't tell lies. Just don't tell lies. Like it's not free. It's not like it's so

1327. binding me as if I can only say one thing, you know, quack, quack, quack, quack. No,

1328. the whole universe is open. Write about economics. Write about statistics. Write beautiful songs

1329. and sing them. Just don't tell lies. Speak the truth. It doesn't tell you how to love.

1330. Love your children one way. Love your husband or your wife another way. Love your neighbor

1331. another way. Love the barista who's serving you another way. It doesn't tell you how to.

1332. You see what I mean? It's like these things aren't things which bind us. And that's the thing

1333. which the Psalms are going to now unfold. That now that you realize, okay, I have a sin problem.

1334. There's something in me. There's some significant part of me that's always going to be rebelling

1335. against God. That my refuge in him is a work of his grace, not of my accomplishment. And now the

1336. Psalm is going to help me to sing out of finding refuge in him and wanting to have deeper refuge in

1337. him and understanding how these chords and bonds that his word provides are completely trustworthy.

1338. And do not destroy me, but make me more fully myself and make me free and whole.

1339. We are all on one level. Fundamentally, we know that we are more ourselves in truth than in lie,

1340. more ourselves in goodness than in evil, more ourselves in beauty than in ugliness,

1341. more in ourselves in justice rather than injustice, more ourselves in mercy rather than in hatred.

1342. And that is what the Lord calls you and me to invite you to stand.

1343. Let's bow our heads in prayer. And just before I pray, if you're here or if you're watching online,

1344. if you either maybe you're not sure where you are with the trying God, but after hearing this,

1345. you realize there's been a tug in your heart that you don't want to have imagined tug on your heart,

1346. that you'd rather have the true and living God tug on your heart, that you'd rather not want to cast off his bonds,

1347. but you want to find refuge in him so that the bonds of truth and love and goodness and mercy and beauty and justice

1348. are the bonds that begin to actually keep you together and whole.

1349. There is no better time than right now to just call out to the true and living God and say,

1350. Jesus, please be my Savior and Lord, and I want to find my refuge in you and never let me go.

1351. And there's no better time than now just to call out to him and say that.

1352. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

1353. Father, we thank you that your word makes clear who we are.

1354. And we ask, Lord, that you create within us a hunger for you, a hunger for Jesus,

1355. that the message of the gospel and of your mercy, that it humble us,

1356. that it helps us to die to our pride and vain glory.

1357. We give you thanks and praise that you want us to find refuge in you,

1358. that you are our refuge, and that when we find our refuge in you through your grace,

1359. that, well, Father, that from the perspective of your grace, as we hear your words,

1360. we begin to understand that you just want us to be bond.

1361. You want to bind us with truth.

1362. You want to bind us with love.

1363. You want to bind us with joy.

1364. You want to bind us with peace and mercy and justice and beauty.

1365. And so, Lord, we ask that you create not only a hunger and longing and yearning for you,

1366. but a hunger and longing and yearning for your word,

1367. hunger and longing and yearning to know the psalms and have the psalms form us,

1368. to guide us in our prayer and the singing of our praises.

1369. We ask, Lord, that your word have a deep hole and root in our lives.

1370. And we ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  1371. Amen.
