  2. Thank you.

  3. Thank you.

  4. Thank you.

  5. Thank you.

  6. Thank you.

  7. We're so thankful for your presence with us. We're looking forward to having Pastor John preach for us this evening.

  8. We're also really glad to be able to welcome friends and family for Dara's baptism and for welcoming Callum into membership.

  9. We're so thankful for God's work in their lives. We look forward to that shortly.

  10. But welcome everybody as we gather together to worship our great God.

  11. Just a couple of notices. I've said already we're back here again for worship at 5.30.

  12. John, our friend from the church in Atlanta, will be preaching.

  13. Please do come along if you can to hear God's words again and to worship together.

  14. On Wednesdays we're back with our CDGs, our community discipleship groups in various locations.

  15. Again, check in with your leaders for the details for that.

  16. That will also be the beginning. So this month, our run-up to the election, UK election,

  17. we're going to give some time to praying for our nation and for the church within the nation.

  18. So Wednesday is going to be the first time where we do that within our groups.

  19. We'll do that together as well.

  20. So please come along if you can.

  21. And then one thing, you may have seen it in our notices.

  22. Dara and Shoris and Callum and Ewan and Joshua, they have a charity event for Bethany,

  23. a local Christian organization here.

  24. So that's on the 8th of June.

  25. So it's going to be a day of cycling and running and playing football.

  26. They'll be working hard all day.

  27. If you want to sponsor them, support them, encourage them,

  28. then you can check the newsletter for that.

  29. Our call to worship, which we can share together, comes from Psalm 111.

  30. Let's stand together for our call to worship,

  31. and we'll remain standing for our opening hymn,

  32. which is give to our God immortal praise.

  33. Praise the Lord.

  34. I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly.

  35. He provided redemption for his people.

  36. He ordained his covenant forever.

  37. Holy and awesome is his name.

  38. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

  39. All who follow his precepts have good understanding.

  40. To him belongs eternal praise.

  41. And let's remain standing as we praise our great God together.

  42. Give to our God the immortal praise.

  43. Mercy and truth are all his praise.

  44. Wonders of Christ in the heart below.

  45. Breathe his mercies in your soul.

  46. Qi if for your God of love.

  47. And let's not live for your God in the Bible.

  48. Give to the Lord of the kingdom,

  69. Amen.

  70. Amen.

  71. Amen.

  72. Let's join our hearts in prayer.

  73. Let's pray together.

  74. We recognize it is good and fitting to praise you, our Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  75. We praise you as the creator of this world, the sustainer of this world, and indeed the sustainer of each one of our lives.

  76. We thank you for bringing us here in this place to hear your word, to receive your grace,

  77. to take time from all the busyness, all the worries and cares of our lives, to be in your presence, to hear from you,

  78. to remember who you are and all that you have done for us.

  79. Lord, we thank you that you have provided redemption, that there is salvation that comes from you, our God.

  80. Father, we thank you for your love in sending your Son, Jesus, into this world to be our Savior.

  81. And we thank you for the perfect life of the Lord Jesus, for his sacrificial death,

  82. taking on himself the sin of his people, dying in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve,

  83. so that we might have life.

  84. Lord, we thank you for the work of your Holy Spirit, showing to us our need of a Savior,

  85. showing us our sin, and showing us the glory of Jesus, so that we might trust in him.

  86. Lord, we thank you that you are the God who has entered into a covenant relationship with your people.

  87. And you've done that not because we deserve it, but simply because of your grace.

  88. Lord, we thank you for the new covenant established in the broken body and the shed blood of the Lord Jesus,

  89. that guarantee that you will always and eternally love your people, your church.

  90. Lord, as we consider all that you have done for us and who you are,

  91. and we pray that you would cause us to worship you, to recognize your great glory.

  92. Lord, your word calls us to trust in the Lord with all our heart.

  93. And as much as we recognize the wisdom of that, we confess the times when we haven't trusted you with all our heart,

  94. when instead we have leaned on our own understanding, where we have pursued our own direction in life.

  95. Lord, your word calls us to worship the Lord our God and to serve him only.

  96. And again, we confess the times in which we have made other things and other people

  97. more important in our hearts and our lives than you, the one true and living God.

  98. We have that capacity towards idolatry, to take good things, good gifts, and to make them ultimate things,

  99. and to live for them above all.

  100. Lord, as we recognize our sin before you, we would confess our sin.

  101. That we would pray as the tax collector in the parable, Lord, have mercy on us as sinners.

  102. And as we confess our sin, we thank you for the wonderful promise we have in your word of forgiveness.

  103. That because of the saving work of the Lord Jesus, that you are a God so gracious

  104. as to cast all our sins into the depths of the sea, fully and finally paid for.

  105. And so we confess, knowing that you are faithful to forgive.

  106. Lord, we thank you that you have promised to be with us as we gather.

  107. And we pray that we would know your presence, that your spirit would be at work in all of our hearts and lives,

  108. so that together we might praise and glorify and magnify our God.

  109. And we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  110. And now, this is the point where we're going to, just in a few moments, welcome our new church members.

  111. We're going to baptize Dara, and we're so thankful, as we said, to God for that.

  112. Both Callum and Dara have given a clear testimony of their faith in the Lord Jesus,

  113. both in their words and in their lives.

  114. It's been a real encouragement to us as a church, no doubt an encouragement to their families.

  115. Now, just before welcoming them, we're going to read a few verses from Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  116. Acts chapter 2, from verse 38.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  117. So, Peter is just, the apostle being filled with the Holy Spirit.

  118. Peter has preached a great sermon.

  119. The crowd have asked, brothers, what shall we do?

  120. And Peter replied,

  121. With many other words, he warned them, and he pleaded with them, save yourselves from this corrupt generation.

  122. Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.

  123. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

  124. So, just a few words about church membership and baptism from that text.

  125. What's happening here, as the church begins, is that there's a whole group, 3,000 people responding to the good news about the Lord Jesus.

  126. So, Peter has told them that Jesus is God's promised Savior King.

  127. That in the coming of Jesus, all God's wonderful promises in the Old Testament come true.

  128. He's spoken to them about Jesus' perfect life.

  129. That His miracles were evidence that He was none other than the Son of God.

  130. He's spoken to them of Jesus' death on the cross.

  131. A death that secures the forgiveness of sin.

  132. He's spoken about the reality that because Jesus is sinless and perfect and God accepted His sacrifice,

  133. that Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day.

  134. And that Jesus gives the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  135. Jesus truly does forgive sins.

  136. Jesus does give the promise of eternal life that it's possible for people like us, by nature separate from God, because of our sin, to be brought near and to be brought home.

  137. And all of this as a gift of God's grace and all of this to give glory to God.

  138. So, they've heard this message.

  139. And how did they respond?

  140. They responded with repentance.

  141. So, acknowledging that need to turn from sin and to turn back to God.

  142. And then they stand up publicly to declare that Jesus is Lord.

  143. Now, that wasn't easy for them in their setting.

  144. And maybe it's never easy to stand up and say, Jesus is Lord.

  145. But that's what they do.

  146. And these first-generation believers, they're all baptized.

  147. And then they're added.

  148. They're numbered among the church.

  149. And this group then, how do they live?

  150. We hear about how they devote themselves.

  151. They devoted themselves to worshipping together.

  152. To hearing God's Word and to hear it be taught.

  153. So, they gather to hear teaching about Jesus.

  154. We hear them devoted to praying together.

  155. That they share food and they share the Lord's Supper.

  156. They commit to serving with one another for the good of others.

  157. It's a great picture of what happens whenever anyone becomes a member of God's church.

  158. It's what we're celebrating today.

  159. Callum has already been baptized as an infant.

  160. Adara is going to come and shortly be baptized.

  161. And baptism is a wonderful thing for us to see.

  162. The eyes of faith allow us to see this gospel sign.

  163. That the water, which we usually associate with washing and cleaning.

  164. It is pointing to the reality that Jesus washes away sin.

  165. By His death on the cross.

  166. We think about water that gives new life.

  167. That gives satisfaction in life.

  168. In fact, we were thinking about that on Friday.

  169. That through the death of Jesus and faith in Him.

  170. A person is now dead to sin and is alive in Christ.

  171. We have this living water.

  172. We have eternal life.

  173. So, there's wonderful messages in baptism.

  174. And then, Dara and Callum, they're going to be added to our church.

  175. To this church.

  176. As church members, of course, members of Jesus' church.

  177. But members of this local church.

  178. Where they will worship, continue worshiping with us.

  179. Where they will grow in faith as they grow in maturity.

  180. And where they will come alongside us to serve with us.

  181. And where we will serve them.

  182. And encourage them.

  183. And pray for them.

  184. So, we welcome them with thankfulness today.

  185. We welcome them because we remember.

  186. God still answers our prayers.

  187. These prayers that we make for our family members.

  188. For our church family.

  189. Our children.

  190. God answers them.

  191. We give thanks that God still loves to save people.

  192. He's not done building His church.

  193. And as we give thanks, we pray.

  194. We pray for all of our children.

  195. All our covenant children.

  196. That together, they might join in professing faith and love for Jesus.

  197. So, without further ado, Dara and Callum, do you want to come up here?

  198. I removed the foliage so you wouldn't have to live in the forest.

  199. We appreciate that.

  200. So, I have these five questions to ask.

  201. So, in Bible class, I know that you've been working through these.

  202. And you've been thinking about what they mean.

  203. So, let me ask them.

  204. You can answer them together.

  205. Here's the first one.

  206. Do you acknowledge yourself to be a sinner in the sight of God?

  207. Justly deserving His judgment.

  208. And without hope, apart from His sovereign mercy.

  209. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of sinners?

  210. And do you receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered in the gospel?

  211. Do you now resolve in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit that you will endeavor to live in obedience to God's word as a follower of Christ?

  212. Number four.

  213. Number four.

  214. Do you promise to support the church in its worship and work to the best of your ability by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, and your service?

  215. Okay.

  216. And one last one.

  217. Do you submit yourself to the government and discipline of the church and promise to seek its purity and peace?

  218. Yes.

  219. Wonderful.

  220. Now, having professed your faith, Dara, let's baptize you.

  221. It is a wonderful thing to be able to do this in the name of...

  222. Come over here.

  223. I'm going to baptize you, Dara Faulkner, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

  224. May the Lord bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you.

  225. And for both of you, it's such a wonderful thing to be able to welcome you both into this church, to see you standing up for Jesus.

  226. Because you know, we know, standing up for Jesus is never an easy and a straightforward thing.

  227. So it's a real encouragement, I think, to our faith to see you as young guys ready to do this.

  228. And I know that you're doing it in school and in your lives.

  229. And so it's our prayer that the grace of the Lord Jesus and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit would be with you always.

  230. That you would know, always, that you would know much joy as you serve Jesus.

  231. That you would find encouragement from us here.

  232. You'd always know that you've got elders here within your own family, but within the church family, who want to help you to grow.

  233. And towards that, Keith, who is our Bible class leader, is going to come and pray for you both.

  234. Thanks, Keith.

  235. Thank you.

  236. Thank you.

  237. Thank you.

  238. Thank you.

  239. Thank you.

  240. Now we're going to sing together

  241. before the children leave for their junior church classes.

  242. We're going to sing them nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  243. And again, let's stand together to sing praise.

  244. Amen.

  245. Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.

  246. No other font I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  247. For my pardon this I see, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  248. For my cleansing despite me, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  249. Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.

  250. No other font I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  251. Nothing can force sin atone,

  252. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  253. Not of good that I have done,

  254. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  255. Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.

  256. No other font I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  257. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  258. This is all my hope and peace,

  259. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  260. This is all my righteousness,

  261. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  262. Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.

  263. Oh, no other font I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  264. Jesus.

  265. Our first Bible reading this morning is in John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  266. If you're using a church Bible, that's page 1082.

  267. And Katrina McDonald is going to come and read that for us.

  268. John chapter 14, verses 1 to 7.

    John 14:1–7

  269. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  270. You believe in God. Believe also in me.

  271. My Father's house has many rooms.

  272. If that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

  273. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me so that you also may be where I am.

  274. You know the way to the place where I am going.

  275. Thomas said to him, Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?

  276. Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life.

  277. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  278. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well.

  279. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.

  280. Amen.

  281. Let's once again join our hearts in prayer.

  282. Let's pray together.

  283. Lord, we thank you for the wonderful compassion of Jesus, our Lord and Savior,

  284. as he comforted his anxious disciples,

  285. giving them this wonderful picture of heaven as your home,

  286. a home with many rooms,

  287. and of his going to prepare a place for his people,

  288. that he's going to die and then to rise,

  289. to return to heaven,

  290. to send the Spirit,

  291. to come back at the end of time,

  292. all towards this great end

  293. of God being with his people forever.

  294. Lord, we thank you

  295. for the wonderful goal of the gospel,

  296. that we might enjoy your presence now

  297. with the promise of seeing your face

  298. for all eternity

  299. when our faith and our trust is in Jesus.

  300. Lord, as we who are Christians enjoy that good news

  301. and as we find hope and comfort,

  302. we pray for many

  303. who as yet are not followers of the Lord Jesus.

  304. We pray for family members and friends.

  305. We think of neighbors and colleagues.

  306. Lord, we think of our various ministries,

  307. for the folks in Connect,

  308. for our student and young workers group,

  309. for people that come week by week.

  310. Lord, we pray that by your grace,

  311. you would send your Spirit,

  312. you would open people's eyes,

  313. open people's hearts,

  314. that they might receive Jesus as Lord.

  315. We pray that you would help us,

  316. who are your people,

  317. to be faithful in the way that we live,

  318. to be courageous in the words that we speak,

  319. to be able to point to the truth,

  320. that Jesus is our Lord

  321. and that he is good news

  322. and that there is no other way of salvation.

  323. Lord, we also want to give you thanks

  324. as a local church

  325. that we are part of your global church.

  326. Even as we look around the room,

  327. we recognize that we represent

  328. many different countries and cultures,

  329. languages and people groups represented here,

  330. giving us just a tiny glimpse

  331. of that great gathering of your people

  332. around your throne

  333. from every tongue and tribe

  334. and nation and people group.

  335. Lord, we thank you

  336. for our friends from the church in Atlanta.

  337. We pray for their church,

  338. for their ongoing ministry.

  339. May you encourage them

  340. and may you grow them in faith

  341. and in numbers,

  342. enable them to reach their communities

  343. for the Lord Jesus.

  344. And we thank you for their coming

  345. to encourage us

  346. and to serve us

  347. and to serve alongside us

  348. for a few days, Lord,

  349. that they would be an encourager of us

  350. and that we would encourage them.

  351. Lord, we thank you again

  352. for the recent visit

  353. of Wilbert Chepenu

  354. from Dumasani.

  355. South Africa has been in the news

  356. for their election process

  357. and as there is so much uncertainty

  358. and so many challenges

  359. facing South African society,

  360. we acknowledge the great need there is

  361. of the gospel of the Lord Jesus

  362. to take root

  363. and to penetrate

  364. through all parts of that nation.

  365. And so we pray

  366. for the church in South Africa.

  367. Lord, we remember

  368. our friends Manuel and Patty

  369. who we support

  370. in their ministry in Colombia

  371. that as they adjust

  372. to life in Bogota

  373. that you would be giving them

  374. fruitful avenues

  375. for a ministry of mentoring

  376. and encouraging pastors

  377. and their wives

  378. for those who are leaders

  379. in the church.

  380. We thank you for all the wisdom

  381. you have given to them.

  382. I pray that they would

  383. keep being refreshed

  384. in the gospel of your grace

  385. so that they might serve others.

  386. Lord, we do pray

  387. that you would help us

  388. in our calling.

  389. We know that Jesus called the church

  390. to go and make disciples

  391. of all nations.

  392. You know the challenge

  393. that we often find that.

  394. We feel small,

  395. we feel a sense

  396. of our own inabilities,

  397. but Lord, we know

  398. that your grace is sufficient.

  399. We know that you have given

  400. your spirit to help us

  401. and so we do pray

  402. for each one of us

  403. who are Christians individually

  404. and for our church collectively

  405. that you would guide us

  406. as we seek

  407. to make disciples

  408. for the Lord Jesus.

  409. Lord, we also want to thank you

  410. this morning

  411. for those who are

  412. in government over us,

  413. both here in Holyrood

  414. and down in Westminster.

  415. as attention turns

  416. to a general election,

  417. we recognize the significance

  418. of that moment

  419. for us as a nation.

  420. And so we pray

  421. that for your church

  422. it would be a time

  423. of seeking your faith,

  424. of seeking repentance

  425. and renewal,

  426. both for ourselves

  427. and within our nation.

  428. Lord, we ask for us

  429. as a local church

  430. that you would give us

  431. the spirit of prayer,

  432. that we would recognize

  433. the darkness,

  434. the fear,

  435. the uncertainty

  436. that grips so many

  437. in society,

  438. the challenges

  439. that face

  440. our political leaders

  441. and that we would pray

  442. for them,

  443. that we would pray

  444. for the light

  445. of the gospel

  446. to shine.

  447. And Lord,

  448. as we pray

  449. for the light

  450. of the gospel

  451. to shine

  452. through our nation,

  453. we also pray

  454. that that light

  455. would shine

  456. as we hear

  457. your word

  458. read and preached,

  459. that you would

  460. speak truth

  461. and that you would

  462. give life.

  463. We pray in Jesus' name.

  464. Amen.

  465. Now we're going to

  466. stand together

  467. to sing

  468. the first of the psalms,

  469. Psalm 1,

  470. a great wisdom psalm,

  471. reminding us

  472. of those two paths

  473. and those two destinations

  474. for our lives.

  475. So let's stand together

  476. as we sing

  477. Psalm 1.

  478. Psalm 1.

  479. How blessed

  480. the one

  481. who does not walk

  482. where wicked men

  483. would guide his feet,

  484. who does not stand

  485. in sinners' paths

  486. or sit upon

  487. the scorner's seat.

  488. The love of God

  489. is his delight,

  490. his meditation

  491. day and night.

  492. He prospers

  493. like a tree

  494. which has been planted

  495. by a flowing stream

  496. and in its season

  497. yields its fruit.

  498. Its leaves are always

  499. fresh and green.

  500. In every act,

  501. in every word

  502. he knows

  503. the blessing

  504. of the Lord.

  505. Not so the wicked

  506. they are like the chaff

  507. the wind

  508. will blow away.

  509. They will not

  510. in the judgment

  511. stand,

  512. nor sinners

  513. with the righteous

  514. stay.

  515. God knows

  516. the way

  517. the righteous

  518. go,

  519. the wicked's

  520. way

  521. he'll

  522. overthrow.

  523. Now can you turn

  524. with me in your Bibles

  525. to the book of Proverbs?

  526. This is on page 636

  527. if you're using

  528. a church Bible.

  529. And we're thinking

  530. this morning about

  531. walking in the way

  532. of wisdom.

  533. So we're going to hear

  534. Proverbs 3

  535. from verse 1

  536. to 12.

  537. My son,

  538. do not forget

  539. my teaching,

  540. but keep my commands

  541. in your heart

  542. for they will

  543. prolong your life

  544. many years

  545. and bring you

  546. peace and

  547. prosperity.

  548. Let love

  549. and faithfulness

  550. never leave you.

  551. Bind them

  552. round your neck,

  553. write them

  554. on the tablet

  555. of your heart.

  556. Then you will

  557. learn favor

  558. and a good name

  559. in the sight

  560. of God

  561. and man.

  562. Trust in the Lord

  563. with all your heart

  564. and lean not

  565. on your own

  566. understanding.

  567. In all your ways

  568. submit to him

  569. and he will

  570. make your paths

  571. straight.

  572. Do not be wise

  573. in your own eyes.

  574. Fear the Lord

  575. and shun evil.

  576. This will bring

  577. health to your body

  578. and nourishment

  579. to your bones.

  580. Honor the Lord

  581. with your wealth,

  582. with the firstfruits

  583. of all your crops.

  584. Then your barns

  585. will be filled

  586. to overflowing

  587. and your vats

  588. will brim over

  589. with new wine.

  590. my son,

  591. do not despise

  592. the Lord's discipline

  593. and do not resent

  594. his rebuke

  595. because the Lord

  596. disciplines those

  597. he loves

  598. as a father

  599. the son

  600. he delights in.

  601. Okay, so we're in

  602. the book of Proverbs

  603. today

  604. and the book of Proverbs

  605. is ancient

  606. wisdom literature.

  607. we can think of it

  608. in a sense

  609. as classroom material.

  610. Lessons in the school

  611. of life

  612. in the first instance

  613. given to boys

  614. to young men

  615. teaching us

  616. about God

  617. the wise creator

  618. teaching about

  619. the moral order

  620. within the universe

  621. and instructions

  622. and promises

  623. connected to

  624. growing in wisdom.

  625. Seems a good day

  626. a fitting day

  627. to consider that

  628. as we welcome

  629. two young men

  630. into membership.

  631. I'm sure as people

  632. we recognize

  633. that we are searching

  634. for wisdom

  635. maybe all the time.

  636. A quick search

  637. on Amazon

  638. the online bookstore

  639. will tell you

  640. that there are

  641. over 10,000 books

  642. dedicated

  643. to the topic

  644. of wisdom.

  645. So clearly

  646. there is a hunger.

  647. What's the key

  648. to being wise?

  649. Who is it

  650. that can guide me

  651. into wisdom?

  652. Perhaps people

  653. are asking

  654. a more basic question.

  655. What is wisdom?

  656. Wisdom

  657. I think we know

  658. is more than

  659. simply knowledge.

  660. Perhaps we know

  661. people who are

  662. incredibly book smart

  663. but perhaps

  664. quite foolish

  665. lacking common sense.

  666. Wisdom

  667. is also more than

  668. though it includes

  669. moral goodness.

  670. it's not just

  671. knowing about

  672. what is the good

  673. to do.

  674. Wisdom also

  675. includes things

  676. like when

  677. to do it.

  678. Think about it

  679. like grass cutting

  680. in Scotland.

  681. Wisdom knows

  682. you always need

  683. to cut the grass

  684. where information

  685. knowledge knows

  686. that.

  687. Wisdom knows

  688. when to do it.

  689. If you're a fool

  690. like me

  691. you try and do it

  692. on Wednesday afternoon

  693. you get caught

  694. in a deluge.

  695. So wisdom

  696. requires knowing

  697. what and

  698. when.

  699. Here's a helpful

  700. definition of

  701. what is wisdom

  702. from a biblical

  703. scholar by the

  704. name of Von Rad.

  705. Wisdom

  706. is becoming

  707. competent

  708. with regard

  709. to the realities

  710. of life.

  711. So there's a

  712. growing competence

  713. in how we

  714. apply wisdom

  715. to make choices.

  716. Recognizing

  717. that the vast

  718. majority of the

  719. choices that we

  720. make on a daily

  721. weekly basis

  722. are not

  723. strictly

  724. moral choices.

  725. You know

  726. it's not always

  727. the case that

  728. one is good

  729. one is bad.

  730. When it comes

  731. to relationships

  732. or things

  733. to do with

  734. our work

  735. or money

  736. or location

  737. how do we

  738. grow in

  739. wisdom?

  740. If you read

  741. through the

  742. book of Proverbs

  743. you discover

  744. as if we

  745. didn't know

  746. already that

  747. wisdom is

  748. something that's

  749. vital for life.

  750. And without

  751. appropriate wisdom

  752. we can make

  753. a real wreck

  754. of our own

  755. lives and

  756. we can deal

  757. damage to the

  758. lives of those

  759. around us also.

  760. We need wisdom.

  761. Some of the

  762. wisdom in here

  763. is really practical.

  764. So we all know

  765. I think that being

  766. a good neighbor

  767. is good.

  768. It's good to be

  769. friendly and

  770. hospitable but

  771. five o'clock in

  772. the morning is

  773. not the time to

  774. sing your good

  775. morning neighbor

  776. song.

  777. Okay that's part

  778. of wisdom.

  779. Timing matters.

  780. And maybe some

  781. of you read the

  782. book called

  783. When Helping

  784. Hurts.

  785. It's absolutely

  786. right and it's

  787. moral to want to

  788. help with the

  789. issues of poverty

  790. whether that's

  791. locally or globally.

  792. But that book is

  793. making the point

  794. that you can make

  795. a mess of things

  796. if you are well

  797. meaning but you

  798. are unwise in

  799. how you operate

  800. charity.

  801. So the what and

  802. the when and

  803. the why.

  804. And so here we

  805. find ourselves

  806. invited into the

  807. classroom for

  808. wisdom.

  809. And in this

  810. short section

  811. we're going to

  812. think about the

  813. path of wisdom

  814. the practices of

  815. wisdom.

  816. We're going to

  817. consider briefly

  818. the problem of

  819. wisdom and think

  820. about the person

  821. of wisdom.

  822. So let's begin

  823. with the path.

  824. Verse 5 and 6

  825. Trust in the

  826. Lord with all

  827. your heart.

  828. Lean not on

  829. your own

  830. understanding.

  831. In all your

  832. ways submit to

  833. Him and He will

  834. make your paths

  835. straight.

  836. So this is a

  837. popular image in

  838. wisdom literature

  839. that's biblical and

  840. non-biblical.

  841. The idea that life

  842. is a journey and

  843. wisdom is a path

  844. to follow.

  845. We just sang in

  846. Psalm 1 with the

  847. same image.

  848. We could go down

  849. in this chapter

  850. Proverbs 3 verse

    Proverbs 3:17

  851. 17 speaking of

  852. wisdom.

  853. Her ways are

  854. pleasant ways and

  855. all her paths are

  856. peace.

  857. wisdom.

  858. And this is

  859. helpful for

  860. reminding us that

  861. wisdom is not a

  862. simple technique to

  863. master.

  864. You know, it's not a

  865. door we unlock.

  866. Rather, it's a

  867. lifelong path that

  868. we follow.

  869. If the image was

  870. that of a door to

  871. unlock, well, there

  872. would be that sense

  873. that we could easily

  874. arrive, we could

  875. open, we could get

  876. wisdom.

  877. And we would like

  878. that, wouldn't

  879. we?

  880. It's the appeal of

  881. so much of the

  882. information that we

  883. have.

  884. It's the appeal of

  885. the TED Talks.

  886. It's the appeal of

  887. all those life hacks.

  888. If you've ever gone

  889. to a bookshop and

  890. seen seven steps to

  891. ten ways to improve

  892. your life, download

  893. these six episodes,

  894. subscribe to this

  895. podcast in wisdom,

  896. it'll be yours.

  897. Now, it sounds

  898. lovely, doesn't it?

  899. But we know that's

  900. not how life works.

  901. Somebody said

  902. information comes

  903. through learning,

  904. wisdom comes

  905. through living.

  906. To make the point

  907. there's no shortcuts

  908. on the path to

  909. wisdom.

  910. But this idea of

  911. the pathway is a

  912. really helpful

  913. picture.

  914. You'll think about

  915. the progress when

  916. you walk on a

  917. journey.

  918. Progress is steady,

  919. is gradual,

  920. it's the same

  921. habit, step,

  922. step over a

  923. long time.

  924. And the Bible

  925. uses this to give

  926. us this idea that

  927. over time, with

  928. the right habits,

  929. we will grow in

  930. wisdom.

  931. And for those of us

  932. who are more mature,

  933. you probably recognize

  934. that.

  935. That decisions become

  936. a little bit easier.

  937. The right responses

  938. to challenging

  939. circumstances perhaps

  940. come a little bit

  941. quicker or more

  942. naturally.

  943. That's the growing

  944. in wisdom.

  945. Following a path

  946. is nothing fancy.

  947. We don't make much

  948. progress if we

  949. try to cartwheel

  950. our way on

  951. our journey,

  952. so speaking

  953. personally at least,

  954. it's step by

  955. step.

  956. It's a long

  957. obedience in the

  958. same direction.

  959. And verse 5 and 6

  960. tells us how the

  961. journey begins.

  962. The journey of

  963. wisdom begins

  964. with who we

  965. trust.

  966. Trust in the

  967. Lord with all

  968. your heart,

  969. and lean not on

  970. your own

  971. understanding.

  972. It's asking us

  973. basically, which

  974. path are we going

  975. to follow?

  976. Who is going to

  977. call the shots

  978. in our lives?

  979. Whose authority

  980. are we going to

  981. rest in?

  982. The Lord's

  983. or our own?

  984. It's the image of

  985. the two ways to

  986. live, the two

  987. roads that we

  988. can follow.

  989. Jesus used that

  990. same image in

  991. the gospel,

  992. Sermon on the

  993. Mount, Matthew

    Matthew 7:13

  994. 7, verse 13

  995. and 14.

  996. As he invites

  997. people to trust

  998. him, he spoke

  999. about the narrow

  1000. gate and the

  1001. narrow way that

  1002. leads to life,

  1003. but the broad

  1004. road that leads

  1005. to destruction.

  1006. And then he said

  1007. towards the end

  1008. of his ministry,

  1009. and we heard it

  1010. in John 14, I

  1011. am the way.

  1012. That's the same

  1013. idea, the same

  1014. wisdom, like I am

  1015. the path, the

  1016. truth and the

  1017. life.

  1018. No one comes to

  1019. the Father except

  1020. through me.

  1021. And Jesus is

  1022. telling us something

  1023. remarkable there.

  1024. He's reminding us

  1025. every path, every

  1026. journey has a

  1027. destination, and we

  1028. know that.

  1029. But Jesus is

  1030. telling us the

  1031. destination that

  1032. our lives should

  1033. travel along

  1034. towards, that God

  1035. has designed us

  1036. to enjoy life

  1037. with him.

  1038. And Jesus

  1039. says, I am the

  1040. way home to

  1041. life with God.

  1042. He is the track

  1043. upon which our

  1044. lives are to run.

1045. That to be on the

  1046. path of wisdom

  1047. begins with

  1048. receiving Jesus

  1049. as Lord.

  1050. That's the

  1051. beginning of our

  1052. journey towards

  1053. God, that in the

  1054. end we would see

  1055. God.

  1056. And knowing that

  1057. all the way along

  1058. that path we walk

  1059. with him.

  1060. So that's the path

  1061. of wisdom, that

  1062. slow, steady,

  1063. step-by-step that

  1064. begins with trust.

  1065. But let's think

  1066. now about what are

  1067. the steps, what are

  1068. the practices to

1069. put on to help us

  1070. to grow in wisdom.

  1071. The book of

  1072. Proverbs again has

  1073. many examples of

  1074. these, but we can

  1075. find three of them

  1076. in our text.

  1077. The first is here

  1078. in verse 3, we

  1079. need to know

  1080. God.

  1081. It says there in

  1082. verse 3, let love

  1083. and faithfulness

  1084. never leave you,

  1085. bind them round

  1086. your neck, write

  1087. them on the

  1088. tablet of your

  1089. heart.

  1090. Love and

  1091. faithfulness, those

  1092. two words together,

  1093. those were words

  1094. that God used to

  1095. describe himself in

  1096. Exodus 34.

  1097. It's the language

  1098. of our covenant

  1099. God, the personal

  1100. Lord God who

  1101. enters into covenant

  1102. relationship with

  1103. his people.

  1104. And wisdom begins

  1105. with knowing God,

  1106. to know this God

  1107. of covenant love

  1108. and faithfulness,

1109. this God who is so

  1110. gracious as to

  1111. bind himself to

  1112. his people.

  1113. And wisdom binds

  1114. that truth, the

  1115. truth of God's love

  1116. and faithfulness

  1117. around our neck,

  1118. inscribing it,

  1119. tattooing it onto

  1120. our heart that we

  1121. would never forget

  1122. that we'd grow

  1123. deeper and deeper

  1124. into the love

  1125. and the faithfulness

  1126. of God.

  1127. Now how does that

  1128. lead to wisdom?

  1129. If I know and

  1130. trust that God

  1131. loves me and is

  1132. faithful towards me,

  1133. how does that help?

  1134. Well back in

  1135. chapter 2, we're

  1136. told that wisdom

  1137. has a way of

  1138. saving us.

  1139. So in verse 12,

  1140. it says, wisdom

  1141. will save you from

  1142. the ways of wicked

  1143. men.

  1144. And the teacher

  1145. warns about the

  1146. ways of wicked

  1147. men, about the

  1148. pull towards greed

  1149. and violence and

  1150. the love of money.

  1151. In verse 16, it

  1152. also says, wisdom

  1153. will save you from

  1154. the adulterous

  1155. woman.

  1156. So wisdom will

  1157. save from sexual

  1158. sin.

  1159. Sometimes sexual

  1160. sin becomes a

  1161. picture of idolatry.

  1162. So how does

  1163. knowing God's love

  1164. and faithfulness

  1165. save us?

  1166. Well if God's

  1167. love has truly

  1168. captured our

  1169. hearts, if we

  1170. know that we

  1171. have everything

  1172. in Jesus

  1173. as Lord,

  1174. that we

  1175. won't need

  1176. or want

  1177. or be pulled

  1178. away by those

  1179. other things.

  1180. We need to

  1181. know God.

  1182. Here's another

  1183. way of thinking

  1184. about it.

  1185. In verse 11

  1186. and 12,

  1187. speaks of the

  1188. Lord's discipline.

  1189. My son,

  1190. do not despise

  1191. the Lord's

  1192. discipline,

  1193. because the

  1194. Lord disciplines

  1195. those he loves

  1196. as a father,

  1197. the son he

  1198. delights in.

  1199. If I know

  1200. the Lord,

  1201. he is my

  1202. father and

  1203. he loves me

  1204. and I can

  1205. trust him,

  1206. then I can

  1207. receive his

  1208. discipline,

  1209. his testing,

  1210. his shaping,

  1211. his refining

  1212. as something

  1213. that is good

  1214. for me even

  1215. when it's

  1216. hard.

  1217. To read the

  1218. stories of

  1219. anyone who

  1220. is creating

  1221. a masterpiece,

  1222. whether that's

  1223. a novel or

  1224. a piece of

  1225. music or

  1226. some artwork,

  1227. is to

  1228. understand that

  1229. there is in

  1230. some ways a

  1231. painful process

  1232. of editing,

  1233. of revising,

  1234. of sometimes

  1235. scrubbing,

  1236. of cutting

  1237. that work.

  1238. And those

  1239. acts,

  1240. painful,

  1241. but it's a

  1242. sign of love.

  1243. Crafting

  1244. something

  1245. beautiful

  1246. requires love

  1247. and commitment.

  1248. Now God

  1249. is seeking

  1250. to craft

  1251. each of

  1252. us

  1253. into

  1254. the

  1255. beautiful

  1256. image

  1257. of God.

  1258. We were

  1259. made in

  1260. God's

  1261. image.

  1262. Jesus is

  1263. the perfect

  1264. image.

  1265. God would

  1266. make us

  1267. more like

  1268. Jesus.

  1269. That's

  1270. a refining

  1271. process.

  1272. That's going

  1273. to require

  1274. discipline.

  1275. Our rough

  1276. edges

  1277. need to

  1278. be removed.

  1279. Our sin

  1280. needs to

  1281. be exposed.

  1282. Dependent

  1283. faith

  1284. needs to

  1285. develop

  1286. sometimes

  1287. through

  1288. hardships.

  1289. But wisdom

  1290. knows he's

  1291. my father

  1292. and I can

  1293. trust him.

  1294. Wisdom

  1295. grows in

  1296. the knowledge

  1297. of God.

  1298. So in

  1299. verse 5,

  1300. we know I

  1301. can trust

  1302. him as

  1303. Lord and

  1304. Savior.

  1305. Verse 6,

  1306. I will

  1307. submit to

  1308. him as

  1309. king in

  1310. all my

  1311. ways,

  1312. not just

  1313. in the

  1314. ways that

  1315. it's

  1316. convenient.

  1317. Verse 9,

  1318. I will

  1319. worship

  1320. worship and

  1321. honor him

  1322. as

  1323. Lord.

  1324. So that's

  1325. the first

  1326. practice.

  1327. We need

  1328. to know

  1329. our God.

  1330. We need

  1331. to also

  1332. know

  1333. ourself.

  1334. And that's

  1335. related.

  1336. Since God

  1337. is created

  1338. and we

  1339. are made

  1340. in his

  1341. image,

  1342. we only

  1343. truly know

  1344. ourselves

  1345. as we

  1346. know

  1347. our

  1348. God.

  1349. Look with

  1350. me at

  1351. verses

  1352. 5 and

  1353. 7 again.

  1354. Trust in

  1355. the Lord

  1356. with all

  1357. your heart

  1358. and lean

  1359. not on

  1360. your own

  1361. understanding.

  1362. Verse 7,

  1363. do not be

  1364. wise in

  1365. your own

  1366. eyes.

  1367. Fear the

  1368. Lord and

  1369. shun evil.

  1370. We need

  1371. to know

  1372. our own

  1373. hearts.

  1374. We need

  1375. to know

  1376. the battle

  1377. that rages

  1378. within our

  1379. hearts.

  1380. Whose

  1381. wisdom is

  1382. going to

  1383. guide me

  1384. today in

  1385. this moment?

  1386. Whose

  1387. rule will

  1388. I live

  1389. under in

  1390. this

  1391. circumstance,

  1392. in this

  1393. relationship?

  1394. And the

  1395. warning comes,

  1396. don't be

  1397. wise in

  1398. your own

  1399. eyes.

  1400. Don't lean

  1401. on your

  1402. own

  1403. understanding.

  1404. Perhaps it's

  1405. helpful to

  1406. think of a

  1407. person with

  1408. a broken

  1409. leg.

  1410. So their

  1411. leg is

  1412. in plaster

  1413. and they've

  1414. got crutches.

  1415. So the

  1416. leg is

  1417. broken.

  1418. If you

  1419. have a

  1420. crutch

  1421. that's

  1422. broken,

  1423. you try

  1424. and lean

  1425. on that,

  1426. what happens?

  1427. Well the

  1428. crutch breaks

  1429. and there's

  1430. collapse.

  1431. And the

  1432. wisdom of

  1433. the Proverbs

  1434. is saying,

  1435. learn to

  1436. mistrust

  1437. your own

  1438. understanding

  1439. as it is

  1440. separate from

  1441. God's

  1442. wisdom.

  1443. Why is

  1444. that?

  1445. Well it's

  1446. because the

  1447. reality of

  1448. sin in

  1449. our hearts

  1450. and our

  1451. lives that

  1452. pulls us

  1453. out of

  1454. sync with

  1455. God's

  1456. good design,

  1457. that causes

  1458. us to go

  1459. against the

  1460. grain of

  1461. the moral

  1462. order within

  1463. the universe.

  1464. It is

  1465. folly to

  1466. lean on our

  1467. own

  1468. understanding.

  1469. It's

  1470. wisdom to

  1471. know God

  1472. and His

  1473. word and

  1474. His promises

  1475. to lean on

  1476. those because

  1477. they are

  1478. solid and

  1479. reliable and

  1480. unchanging.

  1481. So we need to

  1482. know ourselves.

  1483. And the third

  1484. practice is we

  1485. need to know

  1486. God's word.

  1487. This takes us

  1488. to verses

  1489. 1 and 2.

  1490. My son,

  1491. do not forget

  1492. my teaching,

  1493. but keep my

  1494. commands in

  1495. your heart.

  1496. So the premise

  1497. here is that

  1498. there is a

  1499. creator.

  1500. And we are

  1501. invited to

  1502. follow the

  1503. creator's

  1504. guidelines,

  1505. the maker's

  1506. manual.

  1507. That's the

  1508. key to life

  1509. lived well.

  1510. here is the

  1511. way to

  1512. know deep

  1513. and true

  1514. joy.

  1515. Joy in

  1516. God.

  1517. C.S.

  1518. Lewis put it

  1519. this way,

  1520. like a car

  1521. is made to

  1522. run on

  1523. petrol by

  1524. its inventor,

  1525. we are

  1526. designed to

  1527. run on

  1528. God

  1529. Himself.

  1530. And God's

  1531. word informs

  1532. us of God's

  1533. design for

  1534. our lives,

  1535. which is

  1536. God's

  1537. design for

  1538. our joy.

  1539. And so we

  1540. need God's

  1541. word to

  1542. tell us what

  1543. God teaches

  1544. because,

  1545. as we

  1546. discover,

  1547. it often

  1548. runs counter

  1549. to the

  1550. wisdom of

  1551. the age.

  1552. So here's

  1553. one example

  1554. in verse

  1555. 9.

  1556. Here's

  1557. God's

  1558. wisdom,

  1559. honour the

  1560. Lord with

  1561. your wealth,

  1562. with the

  1563. firstfruits of

  1564. all your

  1565. crops.

  1566. And so you

  1567. read the

  1568. Bible,

  1569. what's the

  1570. Bible say

  1571. about money?

  1572. It says,

  1573. it's better

  1574. to be

  1575. generous,

  1576. it's better

  1577. to be

  1578. sacrificial,

  1579. it's better

  1580. to use it

  1581. for the

  1582. sake of

  1583. others,

  1584. for God's

  1585. mission,

  1586. for God's

  1587. church.

  1588. The wisdom

  1589. of the

  1590. world often

  1591. says,

  1592. well,

  1593. take,

  1594. take,

  1595. take,

  1596. and hoard

  1597. it for

  1598. yourself,

  1599. spend on

  1600. your

  1601. pleasure.

  1602. We need

  1603. to hear

  1604. the wisdom

  1605. of Jesus.

  1606. For example,

  1607. Jesus said,

  1608. love your

  1609. enemies and

  1610. pray for

  1611. those who

  1612. persecute

  1613. you.

  1614. That's

  1615. very different

  1616. to the

  1617. wisdom of

  1618. the age that

  1619. says,

  1620. revenge,

  1621. that says,

  1622. tit for

  1623. tat violence.

  1624. The wisdom

  1625. of Jesus

  1626. is better

  1627. wisdom,

  1628. but if we

  1629. don't know

  1630. God's

  1631. word,

  1632. we don't

  1633. know that

  1634. wisdom.

  1635. We also

  1636. need to

  1637. hear and

  1638. to know

  1639. God's

  1640. word to

  1641. discover the

  1642. gospel,

  1643. to discover

  1644. the good

  1645. news of

  1646. what God

  1647. does to

  1648. save a

  1649. people for

  1650. himself,

  1651. according to

  1652. his perfect

  1653. wisdom and

  1654. for his

  1655. glory.

  1656. And that's

  1657. actually really

  1658. important,

  1659. even for how

  1660. we read a

  1661. book like the

  1662. book of

  1663. Proverbs.

  1664. Because to

  1665. read the

  1666. book of

  1667. Proverbs,

  1668. without thinking

  1669. about God's

  1670. wisdom for

  1671. salvation,

  1672. we might

  1673. think,

  1674. well,

  1675. if I live

  1676. the right

  1677. way,

  1678. then I

  1679. will gain

  1680. reward.

  1681. If I

  1682. do this,

  1683. then God

  1684. must do

  1685. that,

  1686. and we'll

  1687. find ourselves

  1688. on the

  1689. road that's

  1690. known as

  1691. legalism,

  1692. and we'll

  1693. think about

  1694. that problem

  1695. in a

  1696. moment.

  1697. So it's

  1698. really important

  1699. for us to

  1700. read,

  1701. to study,

  1702. to meditate,

  1703. to memorize,

  1704. to worship

  1705. God,

  1706. to hear

  1707. him,

  1708. wisdom,

  1709. that we

  1710. would discover

  1711. more of

  1712. his character,

  1713. that we

  1714. would be

  1715. staggered by

  1716. his love

  1717. and salvation,

  1718. that we

  1719. would grow

  1720. in wisdom.

  1721. So those

  1722. are the

  1723. practices of

  1724. wisdom.

  1725. But thirdly,

  1726. we need to

  1727. think for a

  1728. moment about

  1729. the problem

  1730. of wisdom.

  1731. So I

  1732. wonder if

  1733. anybody,

  1734. as we were

  1735. hearing this

  1736. being read,

  1737. if you

  1738. sensed a

  1739. tension

  1740. growing within

  1741. you.

  1742. So these

  1743. statements

  1744. all sound

  1745. like,

  1746. here's the

  1747. condition,

  1748. and then

  1749. here's the

  1750. consequence.

  1751. If X

  1752. happens,

  1753. then Y

  1754. happens.

  1755. So just

  1756. hear this

  1757. again.

  1758. My son,

  1759. do not

  1760. forget my

  1761. teaching,

  1762. but keep

  1763. my commands

  1764. in your

  1765. heart,

  1766. for,

  1767. here's the

  1768. consequence,

  1769. they will

  1770. prolong your

  1771. life many

  1772. years and

  1773. bring you

  1774. peace and

  1775. prosperity.

  1776. Here's another

  1777. one, here's

  1778. the condition

  1779. of verse

  1780. three,

  1781. let love

  1782. and faithfulness

  1783. never leave

  1784. you.

  1785. Here's the

  1786. consequence,

  1787. then you

  1788. will win

  1789. favor and

  1790. a good

  1791. name in

  1792. the sight

  1793. of God

  1794. and man.

  1795. Verse

  1796. seven,

  1797. here's the

  1798. condition,

  1799. do not

  1800. be wise

  1801. in your

  1802. own eyes,

  1803. fear the

  1804. Lord and

  1805. shun evil,

  1806. here's the

  1807. consequence,

  1808. this will

  1809. bring health

  1810. to your

  1811. body and

  1812. nourishment

  1813. to your

  1814. bones.

  1815. Do we

  1816. sense the

  1817. tension?

  1818. As we

  1819. look at

  1820. our own

  1821. lives,

  1822. as we

  1823. look around

  1824. at the

  1825. world around

  1826. us,

  1827. is this

  1828. how life

  1829. always

  1830. works?

  1831. We know

  1832. it's not.

  1833. We know

  1834. godly

  1835. people whose

  1836. lives are

  1837. cut short.

  1838. We know

  1839. those who

  1840. honor Jesus

  1841. and it

  1842. does not

  1843. bring them

  1844. honor and

  1845. a good

  1846. name.

  1847. We know

  1848. people who

  1849. fear the

  1850. Lord and

  1851. does not

  1852. bring them

  1853. health and

  1854. wealth.

  1855. love.

  1856. And so

  1857. there is a

  1858. problem and

  1859. sometimes this

  1860. is true and

  1861. generally as

  1862. people live

  1863. God's way we

  1864. might expect

  1865. this but we

  1866. need to

  1867. understand that

  1868. these are not

  1869. fixed laws.

  1870. This is not

  1871. like a slot

  1872. machine.

  1873. If I put in

  1874. X then

  1875. out comes

  1876. Y.

  1877. There is a

  1878. problem.

  1879. So we need

  1880. to say there

  1881. is an order to

  1882. the world that

  1883. God created and

  1884. we absolutely

  1885. need to say

  1886. that life by

  1887. God's design

  1888. is and

  1889. always will be

  1890. the best path

  1891. to flourishing

  1892. but we also

  1893. need to say

  1894. that we as

  1895. people we have

  1896. broken the

  1897. moral order

  1898. within the

  1899. universe.

  1900. That ever

  1901. since the

  1902. Garden of Eden

  1903. with Adam

  1904. and Eve we

  1905. have turned

  1906. our back on

  1907. the God of

  1908. wisdom on

  1909. God and his

  1910. wisdom.

  1911. If wisdom

  1912. begins with

  1913. fearing and

  1914. honoring the

  1915. Lord then

  1916. folly is

  1917. pursuing my

  1918. own honor.

  1919. It's putting

  1920. my own glory

  1921. first.

  1922. And ever

  1923. since Adam

  1924. and Eve did

  1925. that in the

  1926. Garden there's

  1927. been an

  1928. unraveling.

  1929. There's been

  1930. a disorder

  1931. as a result

  1932. of our sin.

  1933. So when we

  1934. read the book

  1935. of Proverbs

  1936. in a broken

  1937. world as we

  1938. recognize this

  1939. problem we

  1940. cannot expect

  1941. to see this

  1942. cause and

  1943. effect always

  1944. play out.

  1945. So how do

  1946. we read a

  1947. book like

  1948. the book

  1949. of Proverbs?

  1950. It's like

  1951. any part of

  1952. the law.

  1953. It exposes

  1954. our failures.

  1955. Who of us

  1956. can say we

  1957. have always

  1958. kept God's

  1959. commands in

  1960. our heart?

  1961. Who of us

  1962. can say we

  1963. have always

  1964. trusted in the

  1965. Lord with

  1966. all our

  1967. heart?

  1968. Who of us

  1969. can say in

  1970. all our

  1971. ways we

  1972. submitted to

  1973. God?

  1974. We've never

  1975. sought to be

  1976. wise in our

  1977. own eyes.

  1978. That we've

  1979. always honored

  1980. the Lord with

  1981. our wealth.

  1982. We read this

  1983. and we

  1984. understand we

  1985. simply don't

  1986. do it and

  1987. indeed we

  1988. can't keep

  1989. the conditions

  1990. of wisdom

  1991. perfectly.

  1992. So it reminds

  1993. us of our own

  1994. failure and

  1995. says to us we

  1996. need God's

  1997. help, His

  1998. mercy, His

  1999. grace.

  2000. grace.

  2001. And it

  2002. should also

  2003. encourage us

  2004. to believe

  2005. the gospel.

  2006. That because

  2007. of God's

  2008. salvation,

  2009. because of

  2010. God's Son,

  2011. there is a

  2012. day when

  2013. these wonderful

  2014. promises will

  2015. come fully

  2016. and finally

  2017. true.

  2018. That takes

  2019. us to our

  2020. last point,

  2021. the person

  2022. of wisdom.

  2023. To be

  2024. wise in

  2025. God's eyes,

  2026. to think

  2027. about the

  2028. whole Bible,

  2029. begins and

  2030. continues with

  2031. the Lord

  2032. Jesus.

  2033. Paul in

  2034. his letter

  2035. to the

  2036. Corinthians

  2037. described Jesus

  2038. as the

  2039. wisdom of

  2040. God.

  2041. Our

  2042. righteousness,

  2043. our holiness,

  2044. our redemption.

  2045. He is God's

  2046. wise way for

  2047. us to be

  2048. saved and

  2049. brought into

  2050. relationship with

  2051. God.

  2052. So as we

  2053. think about

  2054. Jesus, three

  2055. things very

  2056. briefly.

  2057. Think about

  2058. the path,

  2059. his path,

  2060. and Jesus

  2061. with us on

  2062. the path.

  2063. So back to

  2064. John 14.

  2065. Back in

  2066. John 14 when

  2067. Jesus was

  2068. using wonderful

  2069. words to

  2070. comfort his

  2071. disciples, there

  2072. was that

  2073. striking statement,

  2074. I am the

  2075. way, the

  2076. truth, and

  2077. the life.

  2078. Jesus is

  2079. saying, I

  2080. am.

  2081. He is

  2082. saying, I

  2083. am none

  2084. other than

  2085. God.

  2086. And then

  2087. he uses

  2088. wisdom

  2089. language to

  2090. say, as

  2091. God, I

  2092. am the

  2093. truth.

  2094. I am the

  2095. only truth.

  2096. I am the

  2097. only path to

  2098. life with

  2099. God.

  2100. He makes a

  2101. claim about

  2102. himself that

  2103. none of

  2104. those 10,000

  2105. plus books on

  2106. the Amazon

  2107. bookshelf would

  2108. ever dare to

  2109. make.

  2110. He is the

  2111. wisdom we

  2112. need to hear.

  2113. He is the

  2114. Son of God we

  2115. need to trust.

  2116. He is the

  2117. path to

  2118. wisdom.

  2119. Now let's

  2120. think about

  2121. his path.

  2122. Jesus, the

  2123. eternal Son of

  2124. God.

  2125. What was his

  2126. journey?

  2127. He left the

  2128. glory of

  2129. heaven that he

  2130. might live

  2131. among us.

  2132. Jesus is the

  2133. only one who

  2134. could read the

  2135. Proverbs and

  2136. say, yes, I

  2137. always did my

  2138. Father's will.

  2139. He is the

  2140. one who

  2141. perfectly kept

  2142. all the

  2143. commands, living

  2144. with perfect

  2145. trust, submitting

  2146. always to his

  2147. Father's will,

  2148. desiring the

  2149. Father's honor and

  2150. glory always, even

2151. as it led him to

  2152. walk the road to

  2153. Calvary to die on

  2154. the cross.

  2155. And there on

  2156. the cross, Jesus,

  2157. the sinless,

  2158. righteous one, is

2159. cut off as if he

  2160. were wicked.

  2161. He is regarded as

  2162. if he were an

  2163. unfaithful one.

2164. And so we need to

  2165. ask, why that

  2166. path?

  2167. Why that day?

  2168. And the Bible

  2169. tells us that it's

  2170. God's wisdom.

  2171. It's God's wisdom

  2172. for your salvation

  2173. and mine.

  2174. It's God's

  2175. gracious response

  2176. to our lack of

  2177. wisdom.

  2178. wisdom.

  2179. To listen to the

  2180. message the cross

  2181. communicates to us

  2182. is to hear Jesus

  2183. say, do not

  2184. lean on your

  2185. own understanding.

  2186. That you and I

  2187. simply do not

  2188. have the ability

  2189. to enjoy life

  2190. with God, to be

  2191. saved by

  2192. ourselves.

  2193. In fact, the

  2194. message of the cross

  2195. says we are so

  2196. wicked and foolish

  2197. selfish that

  2198. nothing less than

  2199. the death of the

  2200. sinless son of God

  2201. could save us.

  2202. That's how deeply

  2203. our folly and our

  2204. sin runs.

  2205. But the message of

  2206. the cross also

  2207. says, let God's

  2208. love and

  2209. faithfulness never

  2210. leave you.

  2211. Recognize, here is

  2212. God's gracious,

  2213. loving response

  2214. to our sin

  2215. to give us

  2216. salvation.

  2217. So we are

  2218. invited to trust

  2219. him as Lord.

  2220. He is the one

  2221. who secures

  2222. our favor

  2223. with God.

  2224. That when we

  2225. are trusting

  2226. in Jesus

  2227. it is true

  2228. of us

  2229. that God the

  2230. Father delights

  2231. in us as his

  2232. children.

  2233. When our

  2234. faith is in

  2235. Jesus

  2236. God the

  2237. Father loves

  2238. us as much

  2239. as he loves

  2240. his own

  2241. precious

  2242. son.

  2243. Last thing to

  2244. think about with

  2245. a person of

  2246. wisdom.

  2247. To recognize

  2248. that he is

  2249. with us

  2250. on the path

  2251. of wisdom.

  2252. So to walk

  2253. in wisdom we

  2254. must be walking

  2255. with Christ

  2256. Jesus.

  2257. We must be

  2258. trusting him as

  2259. Lord and

  2260. Savior.

  2261. We must be

  2262. living daily

  2263. in the gospel

  2264. of grace,

  2265. the wisdom

  2266. he provides.

  2267. And we

  2268. recognize that

  2269. God's grace

  2270. is so wonderful,

  2271. so amazing,

  2272. so outrageous,

  2273. that the

  2274. whole of

  2275. our Christian

  2276. lives,

  2277. the whole

  2278. journey of

  2279. faith and

  2280. growing in

  2281. wisdom is

  2282. about going

  2283. further up

  2284. and further

  2285. in,

  2286. in our

  2287. experience of

  2288. it.

  2289. To read

  2290. Proverbs

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  2291. chapter 3

  2292. is to be

  2293. reminded that

  2294. Jesus is the

  2295. only one who

  2296. fulfills the

  2297. demands of

  2298. wisdom.

  2299. He lived a

  2300. perfectly wise

  2301. life, but

  2302. also for

  2303. us he

  2304. secures all

  2305. those wonderful

  2306. promises.

  2307. So in him,

  2308. trusting in

  2309. him, there

  2310. is eternal

  2311. peace.

  2312. There is

  2313. treasure in

  2314. heaven.

  2315. When he is

  2316. our Savior, we

  2317. do find favor

  2318. with God.

  2319. We are given

  2320. a place of

  2321. honor.

  2322. when we

  2323. fear him

  2324. and trust

  2325. him, we

  2326. do enjoy,

  2327. we will

  2328. enjoy the

  2329. true and

  2330. final healing

  2331. of body and

  2332. soul in

  2333. resurrection

  2334. life.

  2335. And so

  2336. walking the

  2337. way of

  2338. wisdom is

  2339. walking with

  2340. Jesus,

  2341. putting on

  2342. those practices,

  2343. loving and

  2344. enjoying Jesus

  2345. who is for

  2346. us the true

  2347. wisdom of

  2348. God.

  2349. let me

  2350. pray for

  2351. us.

  2352. Our

  2353. Father in

  2354. heaven, we

  2355. thank you for

  2356. the wisdom of

  2357. your word.

  2358. We thank you

  2359. for the perfect

  2360. wisdom of

  2361. Jesus, your

  2362. Son.

  2363. We thank you

  2364. that in the

  2365. fullness of

  2366. your wisdom,

  2367. you have

  2368. given your

  2369. Son to be

  2370. our Savior,

  2371. that by your

  2372. grace, you

  2373. have made a

  2374. way for us

  2375. to be restored

  2376. to the life

  2377. that we were

  2378. made for,

  2379. to have our

  2380. sins forgiven,

  2381. to have peace

  2382. with God,

  2383. to have eternal

  2384. life, to have

  2385. joy of knowing

  2386. that you are

  2387. with us as we

  2388. walk through

  2389. life's journey.

  2390. We do pray that

  2391. you would help us

  2392. to grow in

  2393. wisdom, that we

  2394. would put on

  2395. these practices

  2396. growing in our

  2397. knowledge of

  2398. our God and

  2399. ourselves and of

  2400. your word,

  2401. that more and

  2402. more we might

  2403. look like and

  2404. enjoy life and

  2405. love from Jesus

  2406. our Savior.

  2407. We pray in his

  2408. name.

  2409. Amen.

  2410. Now, we're

  2411. going to sing a

  2412. section of Psalm

  2413. 116.

  2414. While we're

  2415. singing, our

  2416. boys and girls

  2417. will rejoin us

  2418. and then we

  2419. will move

  2420. towards the

  2421. Lord's table.

  2422. But let's

  2423. stand together

  2424. first of all to

  2425. sing this section

  2426. of Psalm

  2427. 116.

  2428. Rest, O my

  2429. soul, God

  2430. has been good

  2431. to you.

  2432. For you, O

  2433. Lord, have

  2434. saved my soul

  2435. from death,

  2436. my feet from

  2437. stumbling and

  2438. my eyes from

  2439. tears, that I

  2440. may live for you

  2441. while I have

  2442. breath.

  2443. I trusted in the

  2444. Lord, and

  2445. then I spoke.

  2446. I said in

  2447. anguish, I

  2448. am sorely

  2449. tried, and

  2450. in the

  2451. very depths

  2452. of my

  2453. dismay.

  2454. All men

  2455. are liars,

  2456. every one

  2457. I cried.

  2458. How can I

  2459. thank the

  2460. Lord for all

  2461. he's done,

  2462. with gratitude

  2463. salvation's

  2464. cup I'll

  2465. raise.

  2466. I'll

  2467. call upon

  2468. his name

  2469. and will

  2470. fulfill

  2471. my

  2472. vows to

  2473. him before

  2474. his

  2475. people's

  2476. face.

  2477. Please have

  2478. a seat.

  2479. I want us

  2480. to hear

  2481. again

  2482. two verses

  2483. we already

  2484. heard from

  2485. John 14

  2486. and then

  2487. one other

  2488. verse,

  2489. 1423.

  2490. Actually, I'll

  2491. read verse 1.

  2492. Do not let

  2493. your hearts

  2494. be troubled.

  2495. You believe

  2496. in God,

  2497. believe also

  2498. in me.

  2499. My

  2500. Father's

  2501. house has

  2502. many rooms.

  2503. If that

  2504. were not so,

  2505. would I have

  2506. told you that

  2507. I am going

  2508. there to

  2509. prepare a

  2510. place for

  2511. you?

  2512. And if I

  2513. go and

  2514. prepare a

  2515. place for

  2516. you, I

  2517. will come

  2518. back and

  2519. take you

  2520. to be

  2521. with me,

  2522. that you

  2523. also may

  2524. be where

  2525. I am.

  2526. And then

  2527. down in

  2528. verse 23,

  2529. Jesus said,

  2530. anyone who

  2531. loves me

  2532. will obey

  2533. my teaching.

  2534. my Father

  2535. will love

  2536. them and

  2537. we will

  2538. come to

  2539. them and

  2540. make our

  2541. home with

  2542. them.

  2543. You put

  2544. these together,

  2545. what have we

  2546. got?

  2547. We've got this

  2548. beautiful picture,

  2549. don't we,

  2550. of, first of

  2551. all, Jesus

  2552. saying God

  2553. comes to

  2554. make our

  2555. heart his

  2556. home if we

  2557. are believers

  2558. in the Lord

  2559. Jesus.

  2560. He comes to

  2561. live in us

  2562. until we

  2563. are at home

  2564. with the

  2565. Lord.

  2566. It speaks

  2567. to us of

  2568. life lived

  2569. with the

  2570. Father and

  2571. with his

  2572. Son, the

  2573. Lord Jesus,

  2574. of sharing

  2575. love, of

  2576. sharing

  2577. fellowship.

  2578. And that

  2579. takes us to

  2580. what we're

  2581. going to do

  2582. in just a few

  2583. moments at

  2584. the Lord's

  2585. table.

  2586. God's people

  2587. will share

  2588. in the

  2589. Lord's

  2590. Supper.

  2591. Jesus will

  2592. invite us

  2593. to his

  2594. table as

  2595. his welcomed

  2596. and well-loved

  2597. guests.

  2598. and God's

  2599. word promises

  2600. that this is

  2601. an anticipation

  2602. that one day

  2603. we will sit

  2604. with the

  2605. Lord and

  2606. eat at

  2607. his table

  2608. at the

  2609. great marriage

  2610. supper of

  2611. the Lamb.

  2612. Eating

  2613. together,

  2614. being at

  2615. home together,

  2616. these great

  2617. pictures of

  2618. love and

  2619. personal

  2620. fellowship.

  2621. That's what

  2622. the Lord's

  2623. Supper speaks

  2624. to us about.

  2625. God has

  2626. loved us so

  2627. much that

  2628. he gave

  2629. his Son,

  2630. the Lord

  2631. Jesus,

  2632. to die in

  2633. our place,

  2634. to take our

  2635. punishment,

  2636. to forgive

  2637. our sin,

  2638. to give us

  2639. eternal life.

  2640. God has

  2641. poured his

  2642. grace and

  2643. his love

  2644. out on us.

  2645. And because

  2646. of that,

  2647. as we

  2648. trust in

  2649. Jesus,

  2650. we are

  2651. invited to

  2652. eat as

  2653. those who

  2654. are welcomed

  2655. and well

  2656. loved.

  2657. And that

  2658. in itself

  2659. tells us

  2660. who this

  2661. meal is

  2662. for.

  2663. Because it's

  2664. only for

  2665. those who

  2666. have received

  2667. Jesus as

  2668. Lord and

  2669. Savior.

  2670. It's only for

  2671. those who

  2672. know his

  2673. forgiveness.

  2674. It's those

  2675. who know we

  2676. are sinners

  2677. who stand in

  2678. need of his

  2679. grace.

  2680. It's for

  2681. those who

  2682. have gladly

  2683. responded to

  2684. his invitation

  2685. to love

  2686. and friendship.

  2687. It's for

  2688. those who

  2689. know that

  2690. the Father

  2691. and the Son

  2692. by the Spirit

  2693. have made

  2694. their home

  2695. in our

  2696. hearts and

  2697. we have a

  2698. home waiting

  2699. for us

  2700. in glory.

  2701. So let me

  2702. say if that's

  2703. not true of

  2704. you, you're

  2705. very welcome

  2706. to be here,

  2707. but as we

  2708. share the

  2709. Lord's Supper,

  2710. can I ask

  2711. you to

  2712. please stay

  2713. seated?

  2714. and may

  2715. it be true

  2716. that even

  2717. today you

  2718. may come to

  2719. know Jesus

  2720. the way, the

  2721. truth, and the

  2722. life.

  2723. If you're here

  2724. and you're

  2725. exploring truth

  2726. and you want

  2727. to know more

  2728. about Christianity,

  2729. please speak to

  2730. me.

  2731. Please speak to

  2732. Keith or one

  2733. of our elders.

  2734. If you're part

  2735. of our church

  2736. and you want

  2737. to become a

  2738. member so

  2739. that you can

  2740. share the

  2741. Lord's Supper

  2742. with us,

  2743. please speak

  2744. to me.

  2745. After you get

  2746. in touch,

  2747. we'd love to

  2748. welcome those

  2749. who are

  2750. followers in

  2751. the Lord

  2752. Jesus.

  2753. But if it

  2754. is true of

  2755. you that

  2756. your love

  2757. and your

  2758. trust are

  2759. in Jesus,

  2760. that He is

  2761. your Savior,

  2762. if you're a

  2763. member of

  2764. God's church

  2765. here or

  2766. anywhere,

  2767. then please

  2768. come, this

  2769. meal is for

  2770. you.

  2771. Now before

  2772. we come,

  2773. we have an

  2774. opportunity to

  2775. confess our

  2776. faith using

  2777. the words of

  2778. the Apostles

  2779. Creed,

  2780. wonderful

  2781. words that

  2782. remind us of

  2783. that unity

  2784. that binds

  2785. us as

  2786. churches, as

  2787. Christians,

  2788. across history,

  2789. across culture,

  2790. across languages.

  2791. So we can

  2792. share these

  2793. words together

  2794. as the people

  2795. of God.

  2796. I believe in

  2797. God, the

  2798. Father Almighty,

  2799. creator of

  2800. heaven and

  2801. earth.

  2802. I believe in

  2803. Jesus Christ,

  2804. His only Son,

  2805. our Lord,

  2806. who was

  2807. conceived by

  2808. the Holy Spirit

  2809. and born of

  2810. the Virgin

  2811. Mary.

  2812. He suffered

  2813. under Pontius

  2814. Pilate,

  2815. was crucified,

  2816. died, and was

  2817. buried.

  2818. He descended

  2819. to hell.

  2820. The third day,

  2821. He rose again

  2822. from the dead.

  2823. He ascended to

  2824. heaven and is

  2825. seated at the

  2826. right hand of

  2827. God, the

  2828. Father Almighty.

  2829. From there,

  2830. He will come to

  2831. judge the living

  2832. and the dead.

  2833. I believe in

  2834. the Holy Spirit,

  2835. the Holy

  2836. Catholic Church,

  2837. the communion

  2838. of the saints,

  2839. the forgiveness

  2840. of sins,

  2841. the resurrection

  2842. of the body,

  2843. and a life

  2844. everlasting.

  2845. Amen.

2846. So how we do it

  2847. in this church,

  2848. you'll be ushered

  2849. up from the back

  2850. to come and to

  2851. receive.

  2852. There's bread,

  2853. and there's wine,

  2854. and there's grape

  2855. juice.

  2856. The wine is the

  2857. darker, the

  2858. grape juice is

  2859. the lighter.

  2860. Please hold on

  2861. to those, take

  2862. them back to

  2863. your seat so we

  2864. can eat and

  2865. drink together

  2866. in a few

  2867. moments.

  2868. Amen.

  2869. Here, city call to

  2870. members.

  2871. Thank you so much.

  2872. You are tekki vom

  2873. Amen.

  2874. Amen.

  2875. Amen.

  2876. Amen.

  2877. Amen.

  2878. Amen.

  2879. Amen.

  2880. Amen.

  2881. Amen.

2882. We turn to Paul's words in 1 Corinthians chapter 11, where we read,

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

2883. For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you, the Lord Jesus.

2884. On the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had broken it, he gave thanks.

  2885. Let's pray.

2886. Lord, our God, we thank you for the amazing privilege of gathering around this table,

2887. of being invited by your grace, of you showing such warm love and a welcome to us,

2888. because we come in the name of the Lord Jesus.

2889. Now we come because of his finished work through his death and resurrection.

2890. Now we come claiming covenant promises.

2891. We come because the Spirit has given us new life.

2892. We come because Jesus pleads our case and prays for us.

2893. And we come because we know you're a good and loving Father.

2894. And we thank you for your grace to us in the gospel.

2895. And we thank you for the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus,

2896. for the cost of forgiveness that he was willing to bear,

2897. taking the wrath that we deserve,

2898. suffering the consequences for sin that we should face,

2899. so that in his death we might have life,

2900. that by his wounds we might be healed.

2901. And Lord, we thank you that even now he meets with us,

2902. to draw close to us, to give us grace.

2903. And we thank you for our salvation.

2904. And we pray in Jesus' wonderful name.

  2905. Amen.

2906. So when Jesus had given thanks,

2907. he broke the bread and said,

2908. this is my body, which is for you.

2909. Do this in remembrance of me.

  2910. Let's eat together.

  2911. Amen.

2912. In the same way, after supper he took the cup,

2913. saying, this cup is the new covenant in my blood.

2914. Do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of me.

2915. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup,

2916. you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

2917. Let's drink to remember our Lord.

2918. Every time we share the Lord's Supper,

2919. we look back with thankfulness to what Jesus did in history.

  2920. Oh, Mount Calvary.

2921. Every time we share the Lord's Supper,

2922. we are reminded of what he still does in us and for us.

2923. Feeding us for that journey of faith.

2924. Giving us wisdom and grace that we need.

2925. And we look ahead to what Jesus is still to do.

2926. That he'll come back and he'll take us to be with him.

2927. That we might be where he is,

  2928. always and forever,

2929. to feast with great joy.

  2930. Let's pray.

2931. Father, thank you for this simple meal

2932. that speaks such wonderful truth.

2933. We thank you for your grace and your kindness.

2934. And we do pray that this would nourish us spiritually.

2935. That it would feed us.

2936. That we might go into this week

2937. and indeed into the rest of our lives.

  2938. And knowing satisfaction,

  2939. knowing life,

  2940. knowing joy

2941. that comes from knowing Jesus as Savior.

  2942. Amen.

  2943. Now our closing hymn

  2944. is the hymn,

2945. Not My Will But Yours Be Done.

2946. And we're going to stand together to sing.

  2947. Amen.

  2948. Amen.

  2949. Amen.

2950. Father, as in heaven, so on earth, my heart is drawn to self-exalting.

2951. Help me seek your kingdom first.

2952. As Jesus walks, O final walk, held by your same unchanging love,

2953. He stilled my vow, O lift your voice and pray, Father, not my wrath, but yours be done.

2954. Oh, in the garden He persisted, I may never fully know.

2955. The fearful weight of true obedience, it was held by him alone.

2956. What wondrous faith to bear that cross, to bear my sin, what wondrous love.

2957. My hope was sure, whether my Savior prayed, Father, not my will, but yours be done.

  2958. Amen.

2959. As Jesus rose, so I shall rise in ransom glory at the throne.

2960. My heart restored, with all your sins I sing, Father, not my will, but yours be done.

2961. As we go forth, our God and Father, lead us daily in the fight.

2962. That all the world might see your glory, and your name be lifted high.

2963. And in this name we overcome, for you shall see us safely home.

2964. Now as your church, we lift our voice and pray, Father, not my will, but yours be done.

2965. As we leave the Lord's table, we go with God's promise to be with us, to send us.

2966. Here is benediction from Romans chapter 1, verse 7.

    Romans 1:7

2967. To all who are loved by God and called to be his holy people, grace and peace to you, from God our Father and from the Lord.
