  1. Thank you so much for having me and our friends from Atlanta here.

  2. Been really enjoying your hospitality from Keith and James and the members here.

  3. It's only been three days since we've been in Edinburgh now.

  4. Been enjoying the city a lot, especially just the amount of walking that you have to do here,

  5. which is healthy. It's a good thing.

  6. My Apple Watch has been giving me shout-outs that I didn't know existed.

  7. I got all kinds of medals yesterday for walking.

  8. I got a gold coin or some kind for walking 81 minutes straight,

  9. which in Atlanta, Georgia, is an eternity.

  10. So I think another few more days here, I'm definitely going to be going home with more medals.

  11. I'm going to, and as you can tell, yes, I am from the States,

  12. so I don't have the beautiful accent that James has.

  13. And I don't know if you knew this, but in the States,

  14. if you're somebody with a British accent or a Scottish accent,

  15. your credibility skyrockets.

  16. So I don't know if the reverse is true,

  17. where if you lack such an accent here, your credibility goes down.

  18. I hope that's not the case.

  19. But either way, you know, the good news is God's word is true,

  20. whatever accent it's spoken in.

  21. So I do want to go into God's word with you and read with you one verse.

  22. And I just happen to have a ESV Bible.

  23. So I'm going to read you that one verse from the ESV Bible.

  24. I think the NIV that you use is a fine translation.

  25. I just happen to have the ESV.

  26. So let me read that for us,

  27. and I think it will be also up on the screen as well in the ESV,

  28. Luke chapter 9, verse 23.

    Luke 9:23

  29. So as I read this, let's give it our attentive hearing,

  30. because this is God's word.

  31. And he said to all,

  32. if anyone would come after me,

  33. let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

  34. May God bless the reading and preaching of his word.

  35. The gospel of Luke is structured in a way where

  36. the first nine chapters are about revealing who Jesus is.

  37. So you get to see Jesus is the calm in your storm.

  38. Jesus is the source of your blessedness,

  39. or that's a biblical word for your happiness.

  40. He is the true Lord of the Sabbath.

  41. He's the giver of true rest.

  42. These wonderful revelations of who Jesus is,

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  43. chapters 1 through 9.

  44. Here is the transition point that Luke is making now,

  45. in the middle of chapter 9.

  46. And it's a transition that he's, in a way,

  47. inviting you and me to consider making.

  48. And it's this.

  49. Having learned these things about Jesus,

  50. what will you do with him?

  51. Maybe more pointedly,

  52. for those of you who grew up learning about Jesus

  53. and kind of living in the chapters 1 through 9,

  54. and having been revealed to you, right,

  55. who Jesus is,

  56. the question Luke is asking now is,

  57. will you go beyond knowing about him

  58. to actually following him?

  59. And what does that mean?

  60. What does it mean to follow him as his disciple?

  61. I think Jesus explains it all so simply and yet so thoroughly in this single verse,

  62. chapter 9, verse 23.

  63. Every phrase in this verse is important,

  64. so I would like to chew on this slowly with you.

  65. And I think we can break this down into three parts

  66. and consider how Jesus' call to discipleship is,

  67. one, it's a call to go after something.

  68. Two, it's a call to deny.

  69. And three, it's a call to daily carry.

  70. These three.

  71. It's a call to go after.

  72. It's a call to deny.

  73. And a call to daily carry.

  74. Let's go through these one at a time.

  75. Point number one,

  76. the call to discipleship is a call to go after something.

  77. The NIV says,

  78. whoever wants to be my disciples,

  79. and I think that's a fine translation

  80. of what it says in the Greek,

  81. that is,

  82. if anyone will come after me,

  83. or go after me,

  84. because that's essentially what a disciple is.

  85. A disciple is somebody who goes after someone.

  86. And if you're going after someone,

  87. you're a disciple.

  88. But I think it's interesting that Jesus says,

  89. if anyone would come after me,

  90. because before that tells you,

  91. you ought to go after Jesus,

  92. I think it tells you something even more basic

  93. about yourself and me.

  94. And that is,

  95. you are someone who goes after things.

  96. Everybody in this world,

  97. even if you're not going after Jesus,

  98. is going after something.

  99. We're creatures that go after stuff.

  100. We latch on to things.

  101. We get hooked on things.

  102. We commit ourselves to things.

  103. And we get consumed by things.

  104. We must.

  105. Why?

  106. I think,

  107. I think C.S. Lewis is a popular author around here,

  108. so I may quote him.

  109. I think he explains this really well

  110. in his little book,

  111. The Weight of Glory.

  112. There's an excerpt that goes like this.

  113. God has given us the morning star already.

  114. You can go and enjoy the gift on many fine mornings

  115. if you get up early enough.

  116. What more, you may ask,

  117. do we want?

  118. Ah, but we want so much more.

  119. The poets and the mythologies know all about it.

  120. We do not want merely to see beauty,

  121. though God knows even that is bounty enough.

  122. We want something else,

  123. which can hardly be put into words,

  124. to be united with the beauty we see,

  125. to pass into it,

  126. to receive it into ourselves,

  127. to bathe in it,

  128. to become part of it.

  129. In other words,

  130. you're wired in such a way,

  131. human beings are wired in such a way,

  132. as to not just chase after something

  133. we consider to be ultimately beautiful

  134. and glorious,

  135. but we're wired to go after it

  136. until we enter into it,

  137. until we're one with it.

  138. We're wired to receive it into us,

  139. as Lewis says,

  140. to bathe in it and become a part of it,

  141. if you believe it to be

  142. a beautiful and glorious thing.

  143. And one way people manifest this

  144. is by putting on maybe a certain

  145. football team jersey,

  146. or hang a certain work of art in your home.

  147. All these ways we go after something in life

  148. we consider to be beautiful, glorious,

  149. until we are in some sense

  150. one with it.

  151. Our team was

  152. having a team meeting

  153. and just talking about

  154. the sites we should visit

  155. and see while we're here.

  156. And at one point,

  157. one of our team members, Ross,

  158. he pulled up his phone

  159. and he showed us

  160. a photo image of Arthur's seat.

  161. And he said,

  162. guys,

  163. I need,

  164. need,

  165. to enter

  166. this.

  167. He even went as far as to say,

  168. I need,

  169. pointing at Arthur's seat,

  170. I need to be one

  171. with whatever this is.

  172. And I said,

  173. Ross, calm down.

  174. We're going to go there.

  175. We'll visit.

  176. Don't worry.

  177. As in,

  178. he didn't just want to see

  179. a photo of it.

  180. He didn't want to hear

  181. someone else

  182. talking about their

  183. experience of it.

  184. He wanted to enter into it.

  185. He wanted to be

  186. one with it.

  187. And that's the meaning

  188. of going after something.

  189. Go after you means

  190. you're not satisfied

  191. until you're one with it somehow.

  192. A similar word

  193. the Bible uses for that,

  194. I think,

  195. is the word communion.

  196. Just think about

  197. what that word sounds like.

  198. The word common

  199. and the word union

  200. put together.

  201. It's to have something

  202. in common through union.

  203. That's why Paul,

  204. when he describes

  205. the sacrament of communion

  206. in 1 Corinthians,

  207. he describes it

  208. not as a mere

  209. observance

  210. of Christ,

  211. but as a

  212. participation

  213. in Christ.

  214. it's our receiving

  215. of Christ

  216. into ourselves,

  217. being united

  218. to him spiritually.

  219. But do you know

  220. where we first

  221. see this communion

  222. in the Bible?

  223. It's in Genesis,

  224. in the Trinity.

  225. The triune God

  226. who created all things

  227. and said,

  228. let us make mankind

  229. in our own image.

  230. We see God being

  231. communal

  232. from all eternity,

  233. perfectly satisfied

  234. in their union

  235. with each other,

  236. Father,

  237. Son,

  238. Holy Spirit,

  239. in their beauty,

  240. perfection,

  241. and glory.

  242. And in creating,

  243. in creation,

  244. God was extending

  245. that joy,

  246. that communal joy,

  247. to the creatures

  248. who are made

  249. in his image

  250. so that they would

  251. join in that fellowship

  252. and have communion

  253. with God as well.

  254. And because we're made

  255. in that image,

  256. in the image

  257. of this triune God,

  258. that's why we cannot

  259. help but long

  260. for communion

  261. with a beauty

  262. and glory

  263. that is perfectly

  264. satisfying.

  265. We will not

  266. stop

  267. going after

  268. things

  269. until we find

  270. this beautiful

  271. and glorious thing.

  272. It's how we're made.

  273. It's how we're wired.

  274. Now,

  275. Jesus' point is,

  276. of course,

  277. come after me,

  278. right?

  279. Because I'm here

  280. to restore to you

  281. this communion

  282. with God

  283. that was once lost

  284. because of sin's wages.

  285. But here's the thing

  286. I hope you also understand.

  287. That is,

  288. even if you don't,

  289. okay,

  290. even if you don't

  291. go after Jesus

  292. and have communion

  293. with him,

  294. because you were made

  295. in his image,

  296. you will have

  297. communion

  298. with something.

  299. You will chase after

  300. and latch on

  301. to something

  302. you consider to be

  303. glorious,

  304. beautiful,

  305. ultimately,

  306. and you will end up

  307. uniting yourself

  308. to it.

  309. You'll be discipled

  310. into it,

  311. even if you're not

  312. being discipled

  313. into Christ.

  314. It's how you're made.

  315. It's how you're wired.

  316. You can't help it.

  317. So the question,

  318. the bigger question,

  319. is not whether

  320. you're a disciple.

  321. You are.

  322. The real question is,

  323. what are you

  324. discipled by?

  325. What are you

  326. uniting yourself

  327. to?

  328. We're all doing it.

  329. The only question is,

  330. what is it?

  331. What do you identify

  332. yourself with

  333. most closely?

  334. Whose jersey

  335. are you wearing?

  336. Which picture

  337. do you want to

  338. enter into

  339. and be one with?

  340. We must.

  341. What is it?

  342. The trouble

  343. we fall into

  344. as a result

  345. of our human

  346. fallenness,

  347. our sinful nature,

  348. is that we latch

  349. onto things that are

  350. never completely

  351. satisfying.

  352. Never permanent

  353. enough,

  354. never true enough,

  355. never secure enough,

  356. never loving us

  357. enough,

  358. therefore never

  359. satisfying enough.

  360. And it's not

  361. satisfying enough

  362. because we were

  363. not made for

  364. these things.

  365. We were made

  366. for God

  367. as Augustine

  368. put it.

  369. Until

  370. we are

  371. finding our

  372. rest in him,

  373. our hearts

  374. will be restless

  375. because he made

  376. us for himself.

  377. That's why Jesus

  378. says,

  379. come after

  380. me.

  381. Don't just

  382. hear about me,

  383. learn about me,

  384. listen to

  385. teachings about

  386. me.

  387. Come after

  388. me

  389. until you're

  390. one with me,

  391. until you're

  392. entered into

  393. me,

  394. I've entered

  395. into you,

  396. until we have

  397. communion,

  398. come after

  399. me.

  400. He even

  401. says,

  402. eat me

  403. and drink

  404. me

  405. and be

  406. fully

  407. satisfied.

  408. This is

  409. Jesus'

  410. call

  411. to

  412. discipleship,

  413. to go

  414. after him

  415. and to be

  416. satisfied

  417. in him

  418. ultimately.

  419. And I think

  420. this is

  421. something we

  422. have to

  423. as saints

  424. and believers

  425. understand.

  426. To be a

  427. Christian does

  428. not mean we

  429. see Jesus

  430. for who he

  431. is.

  432. But to be a

  433. Christian means

  434. we go after

  435. Jesus because

  436. we see him

  437. for who he

  438. is.

  439. Until we're

  440. one with him,

  441. until we're

  442. bathed in

  443. him,

  444. he's

  445. that

  446. beautiful

  447. and glorious

  448. and worthwhile.

  449. Have you

  450. gone after

  451. him this

  452. way?

  453. Are you

  454. going after

  455. him this

  456. way as

  457. if you

  458. must be

  459. absolutely

  460. identified

  461. with him

  462. until his

  463. beauty,

  464. his glory,

  465. his life,

  466. his character,

  467. all that

  468. reflects him

  469. is reflected

  470. in your

  471. life,

  472. reflected in

  473. your character

  474. too.

  475. So the

  476. first thing

  477. this phrase

  478. tells,

  479. come after

  480. me,

  481. tells us

  482. is this

  483. is what

  484. you're

  485. wired to

  486. do,

  487. everyone is

  488. doing it,

  489. the only

  490. question is

  491. what are

  492. you going

  493. after?

  494. And the

  495. other thing

  496. this tells

  497. us is you

  498. must go

  499. after Christ

  500. if you

  501. want to be

  502. satisfied.

  503. Only through

  504. Christ will

  505. you restore

  506. your fellowship

  507. and communion

  508. with your

  509. maker,

  510. with the

  511. triune God

  512. and he

  513. will,

  514. he will

  515. satisfy you.

  516. The next

  517. thing he

  518. reveals to

  519. his followers

  520. is this,

  521. as soon

  522. as you

  523. take that

  524. first step

  525. to go

  526. after him,

  527. as you

  528. put your

  529. left foot

  530. forward to

  531. go after

  532. him,

  533. here's what

  534. your right

  535. foot does

  536. immediately as

  537. a follow

  538. through,

  539. you deny

  540. yourself.

  541. The call

  542. to discipleship

  543. is a call

  544. to deny

  545. yourself,

  546. that's the

  547. second point.

  548. And I

  549. think it's

  550. interesting

  551. that Jesus

  552. says,

  553. let him,

  554. let him

  555. deny

  556. himself,

  557. as if

  558. he'll do

  559. this willingly

  560. and voluntarily,

  561. let him,

  562. allow him,

  563. no need to

  564. coerce him,

  565. drag him

  566. to church

  567. against his

  568. will,

  569. let him

  570. gladly,

  571. freely,

  572. willingly do

  573. this,

  574. do what?

  575. Deny

  576. himself.

  577. And you

  578. have to

  579. ask at

  580. this point,

  581. why would

  582. anybody do

  583. that?

  584. Why would

  585. anybody

  586. willingly,

  587. voluntarily

  588. deny

  589. themselves

  590. and follow

  591. someone

  592. else?

  593. I mean,

  594. don't we

  595. all want

  596. to affirm

  597. ourselves?

  598. Nobody

  599. wants to

  600. be challenged

  601. and denied

  602. and corrected

  603. and rebuked.

  604. I want to

  605. be champion,

  606. I want to

  607. be heard,

  608. I want to

  609. be approved.

  610. It seems

  611. counterintuitive,

  612. let him

  613. deny himself.

  614. Right?

  615. It's

  616. counterintuitive

  617. until,

  618. until you

  619. realize it's

  620. not so

  621. counterintuitive

  622. if,

  623. if you

  624. have found

  625. something in

  626. your life

  627. that you

  628. actually want

  629. to affirm

  630. more than

  631. you affirm

  632. yourself.

  633. And that's

  634. possible if

  635. and only if

  636. you found

  637. something in

  638. your life

  639. that you

  640. consider to

  641. be more

  642. valuable to

  643. you than

  644. you.

  645. Then it

  646. becomes a

  647. natural movement

  648. in your heart

  649. to say,

  650. hey you,

  651. talking to

  652. yourself,

  653. hey you,

  654. move over.

  655. I want

  656. this in.

  657. I want to

  658. make room

  659. for this.

  660. I want to

  661. let this

  662. beautiful and

  663. glorious thing

  664. into my life

  665. and let it

  666. take control.

  667. Why?

  668. It's just

  669. more beautiful

  670. and glorious

  671. than myself.

  672. I want

  673. to let it

  674. happen.

  675. I want to

  676. deny myself

  677. so I can

  678. affirm this.

  679. When we

  680. find something

  681. more lovely

  682. than our

  683. own selves,

  684. self-denial

  685. becomes

  686. natural.

  687. Yielding

  688. to it

  689. becomes

  690. natural.

  691. For the

  692. sake of

  693. that thing

  694. we'll turn

  695. to even

  696. our own

  697. thoughts

  698. and say,

  699. hey,

  700. hey thoughts,

  701. move over.

  702. For the

  703. thoughts of

  704. my beloved,

  705. for the

  706. knowledge of

  707. my beloved,

  708. the will

  709. of my

  710. beloved,

  711. the desires

  712. of my

  713. beloved,

  714. the one I

  715. value and

  716. love more

  717. than I value

  718. and love

  719. myself.

  720. if you

  721. think about

  722. it,

  723. I mean,

  724. do you

  725. not do

  726. this even

  727. in your

  728. horizontal

  729. relationships

  730. with one

  731. another?

  732. Do we

  733. not do

  734. this for

  735. our

  736. friends,

  737. spouse,

  738. children,

  739. neighbors?

  740. And it's

  741. when you

  742. do that,

  743. that's when

  744. you really

  745. realize,

  746. okay,

  747. I'm doing

  748. this.

  749. I'm

  750. actually

  751. caring

  752. about

  753. and

  754. valuing

  755. the

  756. people

  757. around

  758. me

  759. because

  760. I'm

  761. telling

  762. myself

  763. to move

  764. aside

  765. and give

  766. them

  767. room,

  768. affirm

  769. them

  770. and deny

  771. myself.

  772. I'm trying

  773. to show

  774. them that I

  775. do love

  776. them,

  777. and at

  778. times I

  779. do love

  780. them more

  781. than I

  782. love

  783. myself.

  784. And again,

  785. I want to

  786. reiterate here

  787. what I

  788. reiterated

  789. earlier,

  790. and that

  791. is you

  792. do this

  793. whether you

  794. do this

  795. with God

  796. or not.

  797. Whatever

  798. you consider

  799. to be most

  800. beautiful,

  801. glorious,

  802. valuable,

  803. worthwhile

  804. in your

  805. life,

  806. you will

  807. deny

  808. yourself

  809. to let

  810. it in.

  811. And

  812. question again

  813. is not

  814. whether you

  815. do this,

  816. but what

  817. you do

  818. this with.

  819. For

  820. example,

  821. if you

  822. find your

  823. work

  824. identity,

  825. your

  826. career path,

  827. career

  828. identity,

  829. to be the

  830. most

  831. beautiful,

  832. glorious

  833. thing in

  834. your life

  835. worth boasting

  836. about,

  837. you will

  838. deny

  839. yourself

  840. to get

  841. it.

  842. You will

  843. deny

  844. your health,

  845. your diet,

  846. you will

  847. deny

  848. your sleep,

  849. you will

  850. deny

  851. social

  852. interactions

  853. to go

  854. after that.

  855. That will

  856. be a natural

  857. movement for

  858. you if you

  859. consider your

  860. work identity

  861. to be the

  862. most beautiful

  863. and glorious

  864. thing in

  865. your life.

  866. if you

  867. consider

  868. having certain

  869. pleasures

  870. to be the

  871. most beautiful

  872. and glorious

  873. thing in

  874. life,

  875. the most

  876. valuable

  877. thing in

  878. life,

  879. then you

  880. will deny

  881. yourself a

  882. measure of

  883. your character,

  884. your self-control,

  885. your patience,

  886. maybe even your

  887. goodness and

  888. your purity

  889. to go after

  890. it.

  891. You're wired

  892. to go after

  893. what you

  894. believe will

  895. bring beauty

  896. and glory into

  897. your life,

  898. and you'll

  899. deny yourself

  900. to do it.

  901. The only

  902. question is,

  903. what is it?

  904. The thing

  905. about going

  906. after Jesus

  907. is this,

  908. as you go

  909. after him

  910. and deny

  911. yourself for

  912. his sake,

  913. it will never

  914. ruin you.

  915. Latching

  916. onto him,

  917. indulging in

  918. him,

  919. if I may

  920. say that,

  921. it will never

  922. ruin you.

  923. If you latch

  924. onto anything

  925. else,

  926. you'll self-destruct.

  927. latch onto

  928. Christ,

  929. you'll come

  930. alive.

  931. And,

  932. scripture says,

  933. you will be

  934. glorified,

  935. as he is.

  936. Have you

  937. found this

  938. to be

  939. alive

  940. at the

  941. core of

  942. your discipleship,

  943. your going

  944. after Jesus,

  945. that for

  946. his sake

  947. you find

  948. all other

  949. things to

  950. be worth

  951. denying?

  952. have you

  953. found him

  954. to be

  955. more valuable

  956. and worth

  957. affirming

  958. than your

  959. self-affirmation?

  960. Is he

  961. more beautiful

  962. and glorious,

  963. truer,

  964. more freeing,

  965. more life-giving

  966. than anything

  967. else?

  968. Have you

  969. found Jesus

  970. to be that?

  971. Jesus is

  972. presuming,

  973. right,

  974. if you're

  975. going to

  976. come after

  977. me,

  978. you see me

  979. that way

  980. because you

  981. will deny

  982. yourself

  983. as you

  984. come after

  985. me.

  986. You will.

  987. You will

  988. say to

  989. yourself,

  990. move over,

  991. self.

  992. I want

  993. Jesus and

  994. his beauty

  995. and his

  996. glory,

  997. his truth,

  998. his wisdom,

  999. his character,

  1000. his love

  1001. in my life

  1002. more than

  1003. I want

  1004. you,

  1005. self.

  1006. Move

  1007. over

  1008. thoughts

  1009. so I

  1010. can meditate

  1011. on his

  1012. words more

  1013. than I

  1014. meditate

  1015. on what

  1016. you have

  1017. to say.

  1018. You can

  1019. at times

  1020. even say

  1021. to your

  1022. anxieties,

  1023. move over

  1024. anxieties,

  1025. I've listened

  1026. to you

  1027. long enough,

  1028. let me

  1029. tune into

  1030. his words

  1031. of reassurance,

  1032. his words

  1033. of control,

  1034. his words

  1035. of love.

  1036. And you

  1037. will do

  1038. this

  1039. willingly

  1040. and

  1041. voluntarily

  1042. because you

  1043. love him.

  1044. So let

  1045. him deny

  1046. himself.

  1047. As in

  1048. this is

  1049. what a

  1050. disciple

  1051. does

  1052. willingly

  1053. and

  1054. voluntarily.

  1055. When you

  1056. find Jesus

  1057. to be

  1058. the most

  1059. beautiful,

  1060. most glorious

  1061. thing in

  1062. your life,

  1063. you will

  1064. make room

  1065. for him.

  1066. Like we

  1067. sing in

  1068. that carol,

  1069. let every

  1070. heart

  1071. prepare him

  1072. room.

  1073. Why?

  1074. He's

  1075. bringing us

  1076. joy and

  1077. blessings

  1078. far as

  1079. the curse

  1080. is found.

  1081. Lastly,

  1082. the call

  1083. to discipleship

  1084. is a

  1085. call to

  1086. daily

  1087. carry.

  1088. Jesus

  1089. says,

  1090. and take

  1091. up his

  1092. cross

  1093. daily and

  1094. follow me.

  1095. And I

  1096. just want

  1097. to hone

  1098. in on the

  1099. word daily

  1100. for a

  1101. moment.

  1102. What's the

  1103. implication of

  1104. that word

  1105. daily?

  1106. Every day?

  1107. It implies

  1108. without ceasing,

  1109. continuously,

  1110. as in for the

  1111. rest of your

  1112. life.

  1113. every morning

  1114. you wake up.

  1115. That's daily.

  1116. What's he saying?

  1117. He's saying,

  1118. once you find

  1119. me, and you

  1120. begin to come

  1121. after me, and

  1122. you're denying

  1123. yourself as you

  1124. do it, you

  1125. find that's,

  1126. this is it.

  1127. Your daily

  1128. agenda, your

  1129. daily mission,

  1130. your daily

  1131. calling in

  1132. life.

  1133. This is the

  1134. reason you get

  1135. out of bed.

  1136. This is what

  1137. you prescribe

  1138. daily for your

  1139. body and

  1140. soul to come

  1141. after me and

  1142. get more of

  1143. me.

  1144. Because, he

  1145. says, carry

  1146. your cross and

  1147. follow me, which

  1148. is another way of

  1149. saying, imitate

  1150. me and become

  1151. more and more

  1152. like me, your

  1153. cross-carrying

  1154. savior.

  1155. As I carry the

  1156. ultimate cross for

  1157. you, he's saying

  1158. you must carry

  1159. your little cross

  1160. and follow me.

  1161. Imitate me.

  1162. Grow in your

  1163. likeness to me

  1164. daily.

  1165. That's your

  1166. mission now.

  1167. That is your

  1168. primary objective

  1169. in life.

  1170. That's your

  1171. ultimate career.

  1172. It's your

  1173. ultimate vocation.

  1174. Your

  1175. Christ-likeness.

  1176. And this is

  1177. why you should

  1178. get out of bed

  1179. every morning.

  1180. To do this

  1181. another day and

  1182. do it better than

  1183. yesterday.

  1184. To be more like

  1185. Jesus.

  1186. Of course, we

1187. get out of bed to

  1188. get to work and

1189. I get out of bed to

  1190. also get my kids

  1191. to school.

  1192. Hopefully on

  1193. time.

  1194. Doesn't always

  1195. happen.

  1196. To meet our

  1197. friends on time.

  1198. To make our

  1199. appointments.

  1200. That's what.

  1201. The question is

  1202. why.

  1203. Why do any of

  1204. this?

  1205. What's the

  1206. ultimate end to

  1207. it all?

  1208. And of course,

  1209. our catechism

  1210. tells us it's to

  1211. glorify God and

  1212. to enjoy him

  1213. forever.

  1214. That is the chief

  1215. end of our

  1216. existence.

  1217. And that's

  1218. wonderful.

  1219. How's.

  1220. What does that

  1221. look like in

  1222. all these different

  1223. spheres of life?

  1224. Scripture tells

  1225. us through all

  1226. these arenas of

  1227. life becoming for

  1228. you your school of

  1229. Christ-likeness.

  1230. To love your

  1231. neighbors as

  1232. Christ as first

  1233. loved you.

  1234. Becoming more and

  1235. more like Jesus in

  1236. those very arenas.

  1237. And making that

  1238. your daily mission.

  1239. That's why you

  1240. got sent into

  1241. those places to

  1242. begin with.

  1243. To display Christ

  1244. in you.

  1245. Your hope of

  1246. glory.

  1247. To be a

  1248. disciple daily

  1249. means that your

  1250. ultimate calling,

  1251. your ultimate

  1252. identity, your

  1253. ultimate vocation

  1254. is this.

  1255. You have become

  1256. one with Christ

  1257. and you are

  1258. daily becoming

  1259. more and more

  1260. like him.

  1261. This is the

  1262. the dailiness of

  1263. Christian discipleship

  1264. or the Christian

  1265. life.

  1266. The radical

  1267. ordinary nature

  1268. of Christian

  1269. discipleship.

  1270. And when we

  1271. deviate from this

  1272. path and fall

  1273. into sin we

  1274. return and that

  1275. is our daily

  1276. repentance.

  1277. The trouble I

  1278. think comes to

  1279. us believers

  1280. when we complicate

  1281. this very simple

  1282. faith and start

  1283. treating Christianity

  1284. more like this

  1285. sort of special

  1286. program to improve

  1287. our lives just a

  1288. little bit.

  1289. Or like a

  1290. fitness program to

  1291. sort of enrich

  1292. our lives when we

  1293. feel kind of weak

  1294. and suffering

  1295. through trials.

  1296. Or some self-help

  1297. program to better

  1298. certain aspects of

  1299. our lives.

1300. Like you can go to

  1301. the Barnes and

  1302. Noble section and

  1303. just find whether it's

  1304. a finance section or

  1305. a health section and

  1306. you flip open the

  1307. Bible for a section

  1308. that might help

  1309. you.

  1310. And Jesus, that is

  1311. not his call.

  1312. He's not talking

  1313. about that at all.

  1314. He's not saying take

1315. me as a sort of

  1316. useful tool to

  1317. improve your life.

  1318. He's saying I am

  1319. your life.

  1320. He's not saying let

  1321. me show you a

  1322. better way.

  1323. He's saying I am

  1324. the way.

  1325. I'm it.

  1326. I am the life.

  1327. Don't live anything

  1328. else.

  1329. Live me is what

  1330. he's saying.

  1331. Come after me

  1332. daily.

  1333. Rest of your life.

  1334. Now that you are

1335. in me, I am in you.

  1336. Put more and more

  1337. of me on display

  1338. through all that

  1339. I've given you.

  1340. Your relationships,

  1341. your situations,

  1342. even your trials

  1343. and your sufferings.

  1344. That's his call

  1345. to discipleship.

  1346. And to kind of

  1347. sum it all up

  1348. in an image,

  1349. Jesus says this

  1350. pathway of daily

  1351. becoming more

  1352. like Christ,

  1353. imitating his

  1354. character, his

  1355. love and putting

  1356. it on display.

  1357. It looks like

  1358. this.

  1359. You carrying

  1360. your cross.

  1361. And that to

  1362. me, before it

  1363. sounds difficult,

  1364. it does sound

  1365. difficult.

  1366. It should.

  1367. Before it sounds

  1368. difficult, it

  1369. tells me Jesus

  1370. is a realist.

  1371. Jesus is not

  1372. naive.

  1373. The world might

  1374. be.

  1375. Jesus is not.

  1376. The world might

  1377. think, yeah, you

  1378. just got to love

  1379. on people.

  1380. All you need

  1381. is love.

  1382. And love is love.

  1383. Love is an

  1384. intuition.

  1385. It's a passion.

  1386. It's a feeling.

  1387. It's an instinct.

  1388. You don't need an

  1389. ancient religion to

1390. tell you how to love

  1391. or what love is.

1392. You just got to love.

1393. We all have it in us.

1394. To me, and with all

  1395. due respect to those

  1396. who believe that, and

  1397. maybe some of you

  1398. believe that, I think

  1399. that's just quite

  1400. naive.

  1401. Because we cannot

  1402. love, at least not

  1403. truly, and we don't

  1404. know love, I don't

  1405. think, until we know

  1406. how to put ourselves

  1407. to death somehow.

  1408. Until we somehow

  1409. carry a cross of

  1410. self-denial as we

  1411. approach our

  1412. neighbors.

1413. Until we do that, I

  1414. think what we call

  1415. love is just self-love,

  1416. and it's not

  1417. self-giving.

  1418. It's a love that

  1419. only takes.

  1420. It's not sacrificial.

  1421. It's a love that

  1422. demands.

  1423. And that's not true

  1424. love.

  1425. Jesus is being very

1426. real with us when he

  1427. says, here's what you

  1428. imitating my love and

  1429. putting that on display

  1430. looks like.

  1431. It looks like you

  1432. struggling in carrying

  1433. your cross.

  1434. Just as I did.

1435. If you want true love,

  1436. not the selfish,

  1437. self-asserting kind,

  1438. but the self-giving,

  1439. sacrificial, right, the

  1440. truly noble and

  1441. virtuous kind, if

  1442. you're sure that's

  1443. what you want, know

1444. this, this is what it's

  1445. going to look like.

  1446. You carrying your

  1447. cross as I carried

  1448. your ultimate cross

  1449. for you.

1450. Your sin is upon my

  1451. shoulders.

  1452. Your sin is nailing

1453. me there until it is

  1454. accomplished.

  1455. My dying breath

  1456. bringing you life,

  1457. letting you know that

1458. it is finished as we

  1459. sing in our hymn.

1460. If you want to know

  1461. true love this way,

  1462. this kind of love,

1463. you have to look to my

1464. cross that was for you

  1465. and learn from that

1466. and do that for others.

  1467. And that's why I say

  1468. this idea that anybody

  1469. can love anybody.

  1470. Love is love.

  1471. It's just a passion and

  1472. an intuition and an

  1473. instinct.

  1474. I think it's quite

  1475. naive.

1476. I want to just take,

  1477. for example,

  1478. a scenario

  1479. where, imagine,

1480. you had a long day

  1481. at work

  1482. or in class.

  1483. You're back home.

  1484. You're ready to unwind

  1485. and de-stress.

  1486. So you have your

  1487. favorite TV show

  1488. ready to play

  1489. and you also have

  1490. your favorite

  1491. bucket of ice cream

  1492. ready to go.

  1493. Right?

  1494. So whether that's

  1495. your favorite Korean

  1496. drama,

  1497. which I'm sure

  1498. you're crazy fans of,

  1499. or Ben and Jerry's

  1500. ice cream,

  1501. whatever it is,

  1502. you're good to go,

  1503. ready to relax.

  1504. And then the phone

  1505. rings.

  1506. It's your friend.

  1507. They had the worst

  1508. day.

1509. And they want to tell

  1510. you all about it.

  1511. What is love

  1512. in that moment?

  1513. Love would be

  1514. turning off the TV,

  1515. putting the lid back

  1516. on the ice cream,

  1517. putting it back in

  1518. the freezer,

  1519. picking up,

  1520. saying to your

  1521. friend,

  1522. go ahead.

1523. Tell me all about it.

  1524. I'm here to listen.

  1525. Which is your doing

  1526. what?

  1527. Putting your evening

  1528. of relaxation

  1529. to death.

  1530. Putting your

  1531. unwinding to death

  1532. for the next hour

  1533. or two or three.

  1534. I don't know what

  1535. your friends are like.

  1536. As long as they

  1537. want to

  1538. talk to you.

  1539. Yeah, I'm here.

  1540. I'm here for you.

  1541. I'm listening.

1542. Tell me what's going on.

  1543. Or let's say you're

  1544. having an argument

  1545. with your spouse.

  1546. I'm sure it doesn't

  1547. happen very often

  1548. in Scotland.

  1549. Happens quite a bit

  1550. in Atlanta, Georgia.

  1551. I counsel quite a few

  1552. couples who run into

  1553. this.

  1554. You're having an argument

  1555. with your spouse,

  1556. and it's this classic

  1557. back and forth between

1558. what you view as the

  1559. right thing and what

  1560. your spouse thinks

  1561. is the right thing.

  1562. It's a conflict.

  1563. It's escalating.

  1564. What does it mean

  1565. to love your spouse

  1566. in that moment?

  1567. I'm tired.

  1568. Let's stop talking

  1569. about this.

  1570. Let's go to bed.

  1571. That's not love.

  1572. That's not making

  1573. that's a ceasefire.

  1574. But the war is

  1575. technically still

  1576. going on.

  1577. That's like North Korea

  1578. and South Korea

1579. right now, by the way.

  1580. It's a ceasefire.

  1581. They're not at peace.

  1582. Here's one thing

  1583. love could do

  1584. in that moment.

  1585. Regardless of what

  1586. the other person's

1587. speck in their eye is,

  1588. you acknowledging

1589. the log in your own eye,

  1590. you owning that first,

1591. and you confessing it first.

  1592. Honey,

1593. regardless of what you did,

  1594. I should not have

1595. spoken to you that way.

  1596. That was sinful,

1597. the way I spoke to you.

  1598. Please forgive me.

  1599. Owning your sin

  1600. while not saying anything

1601. about the other person's sin.

1602. What are you doing there?

  1603. You're putting your ego

  1604. to death.

  1605. You're killing your pride.

  1606. You're crucifying

  1607. your self-righteousness

  1608. and your defensiveness.

  1609. And that's love.

1610. This is why true love

  1611. isn't just a natural thing

  1612. that just bubbles up

1613. and wells up in it.

1614. Or love isn't just an instinct.

  1615. It's just,

  1616. that's not just a passion.

  1617. It's cross-carrying.

1618. And this is how we love

  1619. like Christ,

  1620. and this is Christian

  1621. discipleship.

  1622. Our carrying

  1623. our cross daily

1624. in the very spheres of life

1625. that God has called us

  1626. into daily

1627. and to carry our cross

  1628. there.

  1629. Take up your cross

  1630. daily

  1631. and follow me.

  1632. The only way

  1633. any of us

  1634. will even begin

  1635. to consider

  1636. practicing this

  1637. is if you

  1638. really consider yourself

  1639. to be a true

  1640. recipient of this.

  1641. This beautiful

  1642. self-giving love

  1643. of Jesus.

  1644. If you've received it,

  1645. then you probably know

  1646. what it means

  1647. to give it.

  1648. That's when you'll say,

1649. I want to be one

  1650. with

  1651. a lover

  1652. of my soul

  1653. and I want to

  1654. imitate him

  1655. and put him

  1656. on display

  1657. in my life.

  1658. I'm okay

  1659. with denying

  1660. my ego,

  1661. denying my pride

  1662. and denying

  1663. my comfort

  1664. and letting him

  1665. show.

  1666. Because he is

  1667. the one I value

  1668. the most.

  1669. He is the most

  1670. beautiful

  1671. and glorious

  1672. thing I've ever

  1673. encountered.

  1674. This cross-carrying

  1675. power of Christ.

  1676. His love.

  1677. His love

  1678. is my Arthur's

  1679. seat

  1680. that I must

  1681. enter into

  1682. and be one

  1683. with.

  1684. It's the only

  1685. way we'll know

  1686. how to do this.

  1687. It's if you

  1688. really have

  1689. received this

  1690. yourself.

  1691. What does

  1692. Jesus say

  1693. of the woman

  1694. crying at his

  1695. feet?

  1696. Mercy.

  1697. She loves

  1698. much because

  1699. she knows

  1700. she's forgiven

  1701. much.

  1702. Are you

  1703. forgiven

  1704. much?

  1705. I heard

  1706. my seminary

  1707. professor say

  1708. it very simply

  1709. and it still

  1710. hits me.

  1711. If you think

  1712. you're a little

  1713. sinner,

  1714. tiny little

  1715. sinner,

  1716. you have a

  1717. tiny little

  1718. savior.

  1719. If you think

  1720. you're a great

  1721. big sinner,

  1722. then you believe

  1723. in a great and

  1724. big savior.

  1725. Have you received

  1726. this great

  1727. mercy of God

  1728. for your

  1729. great sins?

  1730. grace, then

  1731. out of that,

  1732. out of that

  1733. gratitude,

  1734. out of that

  1735. rejoicing,

  1736. out of that

  1737. thankfulness and

  1738. your love for

  1739. him, you'll

  1740. extend that

  1741. mercy to those

  1742. around you.

  1743. It's all because

  1744. for you,

  1745. Jesus is not

  1746. useful,

  1747. he's beautiful.

  1748. His love for you,

  1749. his grace for you,

  1750. his mercy,

  1751. his kindness

  1752. towards you,

  1753. is beautiful

  1754. and it's

  1755. captivated you.

  1756. you want

  1757. nothing more

  1758. than you

  1759. putting him

  1760. therefore on

  1761. display and

  1762. that's God's

  1763. call for our

  1764. discipleship.

  1765. May the Lord

  1766. help us in

  1767. this.

  1768. Let's pray.

  1769. Our gracious

  1770. heavenly father,

  1771. we do ask

  1772. for you
