  1. The scripture reading is from Revelations chapter 21 and 22.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  2. Starting in chapter 21 verse 1 we read,

  3. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

  4. For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

  5. And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

  6. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

  7. Behold, the dwelling place of God is with men.

  8. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people.

  9. And God himself will be with them as their God.

  10. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more.

  11. Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.

  12. For the former things have passed away.

  13. And he who was seated on the throne said,

  14. Behold, I am making all things new.

  15. Then in chapter 22 verse 1 we read,

  16. Then the angels showed me the river of the water of life,

  17. bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

  18. through the middle of the street of the city.

  19. Also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit,

  20. yielding its fruit each month.

  21. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

  22. No longer will there be anything accursed,

  23. but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it,

  24. and his servants will worship him.

  25. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads,

  26. and night will be no more.

  27. They will need no light of lamp or sun,

  28. for the Lord God will be their light,

  29. and they will reign forever and ever.

  30. And he said to me,

  31. These words are trustworthy and true.

  32. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets,

  33. has sent his angel to show his servants

  34. what must soon take place.

  35. And behold, I am coming soon.

  36. This is the word of God.

  37. Great. Thank you, Angeline.

  38. Well, once again, good morning.

  39. It's so great to be with you,

  40. and to celebrate Christmas together this morning.

  41. And especially welcome if it's your first time with us.

  42. If you're visiting us maybe from afar,

  43. or your first time in Watermark,

  44. a warm welcome to you.

  45. And a doubly special warm welcome to the children.

  46. It was so great having you singing up there.

  47. Thank you for singing.

  48. Children, that was really wonderful,

  49. and we're so glad that you're with us this morning.

  50. Now, for those that are maybe joining us for the first time,

  51. for the month of December,

  52. we as a church have been looking at these Christmas carols

  53. that we sing every year,

  54. and we hear playing of the speakers in the shopping centers,

  55. and on the streets.

  56. And we've been looking at these carols that we're so familiar with,

  57. but often we don't think a lot about.

  58. And we've been looking at the words to these carols,

  59. and the scriptures that have informed them and shaped them.

  60. And so a few weeks ago, we looked at,

  61. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,

  62. this amazing song that speaks about the brokenness of our world,

  63. the problem of sin,

  64. and the longing for all human hearts,

  65. for healing, for redemption, for a Savior.

  66. I love the words, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,

  67. and ransom captive Israel.

  68. Well, not just Israel, all of us.

  69. Dispel the shadows of the night,

  70. and turn our darkness into light.

  71. Describes, I think, the longing of every human heart, right?

  72. And we spoke about,

  73. Hark, the herald angels sing.

  74. This announcement of good news, of great joy.

  75. We spoke about,

  76. O Come, O Come, let us adore Him.

  77. The call of men and women throughout the ages to make Christmas about Jesus,

  78. to fall on our knees,

  79. to join the wise men, the magi, and the shepherds,

  80. and to worship and adore Christ the King.

  81. And today, as our final Sunday of Advent,

  82. and our final Sunday of 2022,

  83. we're going to be looking at one more carol,

  84. this very famous carol, Joy to the World.

  85. It's such a wonderfully joyful song.

  86. It captures, in many ways, the spirit of Christmas,

  87. the joy, and the hope, and the celebration.

  88. Do any children know how the song goes?

  89. Joy to the world, the Lord is come.

  90. Yes, the case here is blocking her ears.

  91. That's what happens when I try and sing.

  92. Joy to the world, the Savior reigns.

  93. Let men their songs employ.

  94. And then you get this refrain,

  95. Let heaven and nature sing.

  96. Let heaven and nature sing.

  97. Or repeat the sounding joy.

  98. Repeat the sounding joy.

  99. Such a song of celebration,

  100. and joy,

  101. and thanksgiving.

  102. And yet, once again,

  103. similar to our hymn last week,

  104. sometimes, if we're honest,

  105. Christmas doesn't always feel that joyful,

  106. that celebratory.

  107. Oscar referenced it earlier.

  108. For some of us, Christmas is a difficult time.

  109. Remembering a loved one that has passed,

  110. maybe far away from family.

  111. Sometimes, if we're honest,

  112. all the joy and the celebration of Christmas

  113. can feel like a little bit of Christian hyperbole,

  114. a little bit of over-promise and under-deliver.

  115. We talk about,

  116. the Savior's come.

  117. Joy to the world.

  118. But does Jesus' life and death and resurrection,

  119. does it really deliver on all the promises,

  120. especially the promises of the angels?

  121. Good news of great joy for all people.

  122. Sometimes it can feel like,

  123. hey, maybe for everybody else,

  124. but except me.

  125. You know, every year we light the candles, right?

  126. We light the candle of peace.

  127. Jesus has come to bring peace.

  128. And you think, peace?

  129. Where is peace in our world?

  130. You've got one nation declaring war on another nation.

  131. You've got one tribe fighting against another tribe.

  132. Governments fighting against their people.

  133. Or even on a really micro level,

  134. within families,

  135. sometimes our world seems starved of peace.

  136. Where is the peace that Christ promised?

  137. Or we light the candle of joy.

  138. And we think, joy?

  139. Many of us live with this dark cloud of joylessness

  140. that permeates our lives.

  141. Where is the joy that Jesus was supposed to bring?

  142. Or we light the candle of hope.

  143. And yet every year,

  144. December quickly rolls into January.

  145. January.

  146. And we face another year of,

  147. maybe, hardship, difficulty, turmoil.

  148. The optimism of Christmas

  149. dissipates about as quickly

  150. as the wrapping paper

  151. on the gifts that we receive, right?

  152. For those of you that are children,

  153. or youth,

  154. or yet,

  155. university,

  156. Christmas,

  157. joy,

  158. celebration.

  159. I hope you were really spoiled today.

  160. I hope your parents

  161. spoiled you rotten.

  162. But let's be honest,

  163. school is coming again.

  164. January is coming again.

  165. Classes are coming again.

  166. Exams are coming again.

  167. And so sometimes Christmas

  168. can feel big on sentimentality,

  169. but a little short on concrete hope.

  170. In other words,

  171. how is Christmas

  172. with fluffy lambs

  173. and fairy lights

  174. and soft swaying music,

  175. and how is that going to help us

  176. as we go into 2023

  177. and face another year

  178. of challenges

  179. and turmoil

  180. and difficulty?

  181. Friends,

  182. for some people,

  183. maybe if we're honest,

  184. the Christmas shopping

  185. and the decorations

  186. and the food

  187. is a nice escape

  188. from the realities of life.

  189. But when Christmas is over,

  190. life still happens, right?

  191. Well, today,

  192. I want us to think about Christmas

  193. and to take a step back.

  194. And today,

  195. I want us to see

  196. that Christmas

  197. is actually not just

  198. a historical event

  199. that happened 2,000 years ago.

  200. the Christmas story

  201. is actually still being written.

  202. And the final chapters

  203. in the story of Christmas

  204. have not yet been fully told yet.

  205. They're still coming.

  206. We're still in the midst

  207. of the story,

  208. and the story of good news

  209. of great joy

  210. is still being written

  211. and untold

  212. before our eyes.

  213. Today,

  214. I want us to see

  215. that Christmas,

  216. that Christ coming 2,000 years ago,

  217. His life,

  218. His death,

  219. His resurrection,

  220. was the beginning

  221. of good news,

  222. of great joy,

  223. but it's not all that there is.

  224. And there's more

  225. to the story

  226. and the announcement

  227. that the angels

  228. proclaimed on that day.

  229. In other words,

  230. today,

  231. I want us to see

  232. that Christmas calls us

  233. to a living faith

  234. and a living hope

  235. in the midst

  236. of a broken

  237. and a difficult

  238. and a tumultuous world

  239. because the Christmas story

  240. has not yet finished

  241. being written.

  242. Okay?

  243. Christmas calls us

  244. to a living hope

  245. and a living faith

  246. in the midst

  247. of a broken

  248. and difficult world

  249. because the story

  250. of Christmas

  251. has not yet finished

  252. being written.

  253. The reason is this.

  254. At Christmas,

  255. we celebrate

  256. Christ's first coming,

  257. His advent.

  258. But Christmas

  259. also anticipates

  260. and promises

  261. Christ's second coming.

  262. Look at the final verse

  263. that Angie read to us today

  264. in Revelation 22.

  265. Children,

  266. I think you've got

  267. in your packs

  268. something to write.

  269. Look at how this,

  270. you need to tell me,

  271. how does this verse end?

  272. Jesus says this,

  273. Behold,

  274. I am,

  275. what does it say?

  276. Coming soon.

  277. Do you know

  278. in the final chapter,

  279. Jesus says that three times?

  280. Verse 7,

  281. Behold,

  282. I'm coming soon.

  283. Verse 12,

  284. Behold,

  285. I'm coming soon.

  286. And the second last verse

  287. of the entire Bible,

  288. chapter 22,

  289. verse 20,

  290. Jesus says,

  291. Surely,

  292. I am coming soon.

  293. Christmas doesn't only

  294. celebrate Christ's first coming,

  295. it anticipates

  296. and looks forward

  297. to the day

  298. when Christ will come again.

  299. Friends,

  300. the story of Christmas

  301. is really the story

  302. of how Jesus entered

  303. into our broken world,

  304. our painful world,

  305. to rescue and heal

  306. and redeem humanity,

  307. but to bring us

  308. to a world

  309. of wonder and grace.

  310. And the brokenness

  311. and the pain

  312. and the tears

  313. of our world

  314. have an expiry date

  315. on them.

  316. But there is a world

  317. coming

  318. that Jesus is coming

  319. to initiate

  320. or inaugurate

  321. or bring about

  322. a world in which

  323. truth and joy

  324. and peace

  325. and the things

  326. we celebrate

  327. have no expiry date.

  328. How many of us

  329. have had Christmas parties

  330. in the last month,

  331. right?

  332. How many of us

  333. are tired

  334. of Christmas parties?

  335. Okay?

  336. We've all had

  337. office parties

  338. and CG parties

  339. and neighborhood parties

  340. and many Christmas parties.

  341. And what do we all play

  342. at Christmas parties?

  343. Secret Santa.

  344. Okay?

  345. And so everyone's

  346. got to buy a gift

  347. and you've got to

  348. either put it in the middle

  349. or maybe at your office

  350. you take someone's name

  351. out of the hat

  352. and you've got to

  353. buy a gift for somebody.

  354. Okay?

  355. And so what do we do?

  356. We all go online

  357. and we order something

  358. and then invariably

  359. the post is full

  360. and it's slow

  361. and your gift

  362. doesn't come

  363. in time

  364. for the Christmas party.

  365. And so what do you do?

  366. You print a picture

  367. of your gift,

  368. right?

  369. And you give it

  370. here's your coffee mug

  371. it's on the way,

  372. right?

  373. Or here's your book

  374. it's coming.

  375. Friends,

  376. every element

  377. of our Christmas celebration

  378. is like giving somebody

  379. a printed picture

  380. of the internet

  381. promising the real deal

  382. that's still to come.

  383. The very best elements

  384. of Christmas

  385. are like a picture

  386. that's been printed

  387. anticipating the reality

  388. that is still to come.

  389. And so this is what

  390. this Christmas carol

  391. points us to.

  392. It calls us to a living faith

  393. in a broken world

  394. because the final chapters

  395. of Christmas

  396. have not yet been written.

  397. And so let's look

  398. at this passage

  399. that Angie read to us

  400. this morning

  401. and let's see how

  402. the Christmas story

  403. wraps up.

  404. Revelation 21 and 22

  405. describes the final chapters

  406. of the Christmas story.

  407. Because it describes

  408. the world

  409. that Christ has prepared

  410. for us.

  411. And one of the things

  412. we see,

  413. we should have it

  414. on the screen,

  415. one of the things

  416. we find,

  417. the world to come,

  418. the world that Christ

  419. is going to bring about

  420. is not a world

  421. of clouds

  422. and angels

  423. playing harps

  424. on the clouds.

  425. It's described

  426. as a city.

  427. A city.

  428. And that means

  429. it's a real physical world

  430. with real physical bodies

  431. for those that are redeemed.

  432. It's a world

  433. in which there's life

  434. and activity

  435. and productivity

  436. and real relationships.

  437. It's going to be

  438. a real physical world

  439. that we get to enjoy

  440. and celebrate.

  441. It's a world

  442. in which,

  443. as our song said,

  444. the Savior reigns

  445. with Christ the King.

  446. And He reigns

  447. in truth

  448. and grace.

  449. And that's

  450. an amazing thing.

  451. Picture a world,

  452. imagine living

  453. in a city

  454. in which

  455. every relationship,

  456. every conversation,

  457. every aspect

  458. of the world

  459. is baptized

  460. or flooded

  461. with truthfulness

  462. and gracefulness.

  463. Where every conversation

  464. you have,

  465. you never have to

  466. second guess,

  467. never have to doubt,

  468. never have to wonder

  469. what somebody's real motives are,

  470. real intentions

  471. behind their words.

  472. A world permeated

  473. by truthfulness,

  474. a world permeated

  475. by gracefulness

  476. and kindness.

  477. Jesus is bringing

  478. a real physical world

  479. in which the Savior reigns

  480. but He reigns

  481. in truth and grace.

  482. A world in which

  483. He not only reigns

  484. righteously

  485. but the effects

  486. of His reign

  487. are felt throughout

  488. every corner of the world

  489. where every aspect

  490. is put right

  491. according to the way

  492. that God originally

  493. designed it.

  494. Here is going to be

  495. a world

  496. in which God

  497. and humanity

  498. are so combined,

  499. are so united

  500. that they're described

  501. like a marriage,

  502. the two becoming one.

  503. Where we see God

  504. face to face,

  505. we're no longer distant,

  506. there's no barrier

  507. between us.

  508. I didn't actually

  509. think about it earlier

  510. but in Angie's reading

  511. as she read it,

  512. I thought about it

  513. in chapter 22,

  514. it says,

  515. we will see His face.

  516. We will see His face.

  517. I don't know

  518. if you've ever been

  519. on a work trip

  520. or you've been away

  521. and separated

  522. from your family,

  523. your loved ones,

  524. maybe your wife,

  525. your kids,

  526. or your parents

  527. and so you long for Him.

  528. You want to be

  529. with your family.

  530. Maybe you had to go

  531. on a work trip

  532. and you're away

  533. for your child's birthday

  534. and you just think,

  535. oh, I wish I could

  536. be with them today

  537. and there's that longing

  538. or maybe you live

  539. in Hong Kong

  540. and your family

  541. lives somewhere else

  542. and you wish

  543. at a time like Christmas

  544. you could be

  545. with your family.

  546. There's a day coming

  547. when that separation,

  548. that feeling

  549. of homesickness

  550. will be utterly gone

  551. because we'll be truly

  552. at home,

  553. face to face with God.

  554. I don't know

  555. if you've ever

  556. been on a way

  557. on holiday

  558. and you try

  559. and phone your family.

  560. These days

  561. we FaceTime

  562. or you WhatsApp call

  563. or you Zoom call

  564. and it's nice

  565. but it's not quite the same.

  566. But sometimes

  567. you have those times

  568. when the connection

  569. is really bad

  570. and there's long silences

  571. and then you both

  572. try and speak

  573. and you speak

  574. over each other

  575. and the conversation

  576. is just a nightmare.

  577. Do you know

  578. what I'm talking about?

  579. I hate those calls.

  580. My family lives

  581. in Africa

  582. and the signal

  583. is not always very good

  584. and the electricity

  585. is always off

  586. and the power is down

  587. and we have those calls

  588. and it's more frustrating

  589. than rewarding.

  590. And so sometimes

  591. can I confess

  592. sometimes I just take the phone

  593. and I just kill it.

  594. I just can't handle it.

  595. I'm so frustrated

  596. by this call.

  597. It's such hard work.

  598. If we're honest

  599. sometimes

  600. even our relationship

  601. with God

  602. can be a bit like that.

  603. It feels like

  604. the connection is bad

  605. and there's long silences

  606. and then it feels like

  607. you don't know

  608. what he's saying

  609. and he certainly

  610. doesn't sound like

  611. he's hearing

  612. what you're saying

  613. and it feels like

  614. the connection is bad.

  615. Friends,

  616. there's coming a day

  617. Jesus says

  618. in the new world

  619. we will see him

  620. face to face.

  621. We will be with God

  622. and he will be with us

  623. in the same room.

  624. No more lost connection.

  625. No more brokenness.

  626. We will be with him.

  627. Look at what else it says.

  628. It says in verse 4

  629. it says

  630. he will wipe away

  631. every tear from our eyes.

  632. Death will be no more.

  633. There will be no more mourning.

  634. No more crying.

  635. No more pain anymore

  636. for the former things

  637. have passed away.

  638. Friends,

  639. when Christ comes again

  640. and brings about

  641. the world

  642. that is to be forever

  643. heaven is going to be

  644. a place

  645. where there will be

  646. no more sadness,

  647. no more despair,

  648. no more agony,

  649. no more anxiety

  650. inducing thoughts,

  651. no more panic attacks,

  652. no more brokenness

  653. where all of those things

  654. are going to dissipate

  655. and become

  656. non-existent entirely.

  657. I don't know if you've ever

  658. woken up in the middle

  659. of the night

  660. from a bad nightmare

  661. and you sit upright in bed

  662. and your heart is beating

  663. and suddenly you realize

  664. it was just a dream

  665. and it kind of,

  666. your heart calms down,

  667. you realize it's not true.

  668. There is coming a world

  669. that Jesus is going to

  670. come back and bring

  671. and everything that is sad

  672. and everything that is broken

  673. and everything that causes

  674. despair and hardship

  675. and panic attacks

  676. is going to become untrue.

  677. It's going to be like

  678. a distant memory

  679. from a distant world.

  680. Christmas promises

  681. that Christ is coming again

  682. and all those things

  683. will be put away.

  684. And conversely,

  685. Jesus tells us

  686. that the very best things

  687. in life,

  688. the most heart-wrenching stories

  689. of compassion and kindness

  690. and justice and mercy

  691. are a small glimpse,

  692. like an internet picture

  693. of the world that is to come.

  694. Look what else he says here.

  695. He says,

  696. Behold, I am making

  697. all things new.

  698. I'm making all things new.

  699. I don't know if you've ever

  700. seen the movie Toy Story.

  701. Anyone like the movie

  702. Toy Story?

  703. Children, do you like Toy Story?

  704. No, you don't like Toy Story.

  705. Okay.

  706. I know why you don't like it

  707. and I'm the same.

  708. I liked Toy Story

  709. up until the part

  710. where you meet the kid next door.

  711. Do you remember

  712. do you remember Sid?

  713. The neighbor to Andy

  714. and Woody

  715. and Buzz Lightyear.

  716. Right.

  717. What does Sid do?

  718. He takes toys

  719. and he pulls them apart

  720. and he destroys them

  721. and then he puts them

  722. back together again

  723. but they're a mixed match

  724. of toys.

  725. Right.

  726. And they're kind of

  727. this broken thing.

  728. They kind of work

  729. but they don't really work.

  730. Okay.

  731. This is Sid's toys.

  732. Sometimes life

  733. in this broken world

  734. can feel a bit like that.

  735. It can feel like

  736. life is broken

  737. and someone's trying

  738. to put it together again

  739. but it doesn't quite work.

  740. Sometimes relationships

  741. can feel like that.

  742. Right.

  743. They kind of work

  744. but they don't really work

  745. like they're meant to work.

  746. Friends,

  747. soon,

  748. very soon,

  749. Jesus is coming again

  750. and Jesus says,

  751. I'm going to make

  752. all things new.

  753. He's not going to just

  754. kind of put us back together

  755. and sort of fix us

  756. and duct tape us together.

  757. I had a friend once

  758. who said,

  759. if something's broken,

  760. duct tape it

  761. and if that doesn't work,

  762. you haven't put

  763. enough duct tape on it.

  764. Okay.

  765. So if you've got

  766. a broken boat,

  767. just duct tape it together

  768. and keep on going.

  769. Sometimes life can feel

  770. a bit like that,

  771. like it's been duct taped

  772. together.

  773. Jesus is coming

  774. to make all things new.

  775. To put away the brokenness

  776. and the duct tape

  777. of our lives.

  778. Jesus is coming

  779. not just to kind of fix us

  780. and sort of put us together.

  781. He's come to make

  782. all things new.

  783. And what does that mean?

  784. Well, look at what

  785. our song said.

  786. At the end of the

  787. Christmas story,

  788. it says,

  789. there will be a place

  790. where there's no more sin

  791. or sorrow to be found.

  792. Sin and sorrow

  793. are the two twin evils

  794. of our world.

  795. Two sources of pain

  796. because of our sinful hearts

  797. and the brokenness

  798. of the world

  799. in which we live.

  800. No more sin

  801. or sorrow will be found,

  802. nor thorns infest

  803. the ground.

  804. Genesis 3 talks about

  805. one of the consequences

  806. of sin coming

  807. to the world.

  808. There's this multitude

  809. of sorrows.

  810. It's like the soil

  811. of our lives

  812. are infested

  813. by thorns

  814. and thistles.

  815. And so our relationships

  816. and our work

  817. and even our hobbies

  818. and our families,

  819. it feels like

  820. even amongst

  821. the best things in life,

  822. thorns seem to somehow

  823. grow in the midst of it.

  824. And yet,

  825. even back then

  826. in Genesis 3,

  827. God promised

  828. that there would be

  829. one,

  830. a man who would come,

  831. born of a woman,

  832. who would take upon

  833. himself the thorns

  834. and the brokenness

  835. of our world,

  836. who in a very literal sense

  837. would wear a crown

  838. of thorns,

  839. one who would

  840. take upon himself

  841. the thorns

  842. and the curse

  843. of the world

  844. so that those

  845. who trust in him,

  846. those who receive him

  847. as their king,

  848. would receive favor

  849. rather than affliction

  850. and grace and kindness

  851. rather than turmoil.

  852. Friends,

  853. this is what Christmas

  854. is about.

  855. Jesus,

  856. the Redeemer,

  857. has come

  858. to take upon himself

  859. the curse

  860. and the brokenness

  861. and the thorns

  862. of our world

  863. to come and bring us

  864. and deliver us

  865. from as far as

  866. curse is found,

  867. he will bring his blessings.

  868. And that's an amazing line.

  869. It says,

  870. Revelation,

  871. Angie Redditor,

  872. says,

  873. no longer will anything

  874. be accursed.

  875. Well,

  876. in the words of our songs,

  877. he will make his blessings

  878. flow far as the curse

  879. is found.

  880. Think about that.

  881. As far as the curse

  882. is found.

  883. You know what that means?

  884. It means in every sphere

  885. of life,

  886. in the farthest corners

  887. of our world,

  888. where brokenness

  889. and pain exist,

  890. in that day,

  891. Jesus will bring healing

  892. and redemption

  893. and resolution.

  894. Friends,

  895. in our lives,

  896. where our identity

  897. feels broken

  898. and our self-worth

  899. feels broken,

  900. where we feel shame,

  901. where we feel guilt,

  902. we are relationship

  903. with ourself

  904. and our relationships

  905. with others,

  906. our relationship

  907. with God,

  908. even our relationship

  909. with creation,

  910. even the environment

  911. itself,

  912. are all tainted

  913. and affected

  914. by the curse.

  915. And every aspect,

  916. every sphere

  917. of life,

  918. where brokenness

  919. has entered in,

  920. Christ is going to bring

  921. his healing,

  922. redeeming grace.

  923. He will bring

  924. his blessings

  925. far as the curse

  926. is found.

  927. There is not a square

  928. inch of the entire

  929. cosmos that has been

  930. affected by sin,

  931. that Christ won't bring

  932. his healing and redeeming

  933. grace.

  934. Even creation itself,

  935. the trees and the mountains,

  936. the forests and the environment

  937. will experience

  938. and prove his redeeming grace.

  939. In the song,

  940. Joy to the World,

  941. that we're going to sing

  942. in a few minutes,

  943. it says,

  944. fields and floods,

  945. rocks,

  946. hills and plains

  947. will repeat

  948. the sounding joy.

  949. And Angie,

  950. you read about it

  951. in Revelation 22,

  952. it describes the trees

  953. and the rivers

  954. and their leaves

  955. and the healings

  956. that they bring.

  957. and describes

  958. a place how

  959. 12 months of the year

  960. the trees produce fruit.

  961. I don't think

  962. that's literal.

  963. I think what it means

  964. is heaven's going

  965. to be a place

  966. where there's no winter,

  967. no barrenness,

  968. no death,

  969. no frost,

  970. never winter,

  971. summer all the time around.

  972. It describes a place

  973. where there's never night,

  974. there's never any shadow

  975. of darkness

  976. in that place

  977. because light

  978. will permeate

  979. every aspect

  980. of creation.

  981. Scotty Smith

  982. says this,

  983. the valley

  984. of the shadow

  985. of death

  986. will soon become

  987. the playground

  988. of eternal life

  989. and joy.

  990. And so friends,

  991. Christmas tells us

  992. that Jesus came

  993. born as a baby

  994. in a manger,

  995. but that manger

  996. was dismantled

  997. and converted

  998. into a cross

  999. upon which he would

  1000. die and hang

  1001. for the sins

  1002. of the world.

  1003. But even that cross

  1004. is not the end

  1005. of the story

  1006. because that cross

  1007. is one day

  1008. going to become

  1009. a throne

  1010. from which the Savior

  1011. will rule and reign

  1012. in truth and grace

1013. over all of the new world.

  1014. Friends,

  1015. Christmas calls us

1016. to live with living faith

  1017. and living hope

  1018. even in the midst

  1019. of a broken

  1020. and fractured world

  1021. because the Christmas story

  1022. is not yet finished

  1023. being written.

  1024. Jesus came

  1025. but he's coming again

1026. and he's going to make

  1027. all things new

1028. and he's going to put right

  1029. all that is wrong

  1030. with the world.

  1031. Jesus is coming again

1032. and so joy to the world,

  1033. the Lord has come

  1034. but oh boy,

  1035. he's coming again.

  1036. He's coming again.

  1037. Now,

  1038. what does that mean?

  1039. How should we respond?

  1040. Well,

1041. let me give us two things

  1042. very quickly.

  1043. Firstly,

1044. our song that we're going

  1045. to sing,

  1046. Joy to the World,

  1047. tells us.

  1048. It says,

  1049. Let every heart

  1050. prepare him room.

1051. Let earth receive her king.

1052. I don't know if any of you

  1053. have been receiving guests

  1054. this Christmas.

  1055. Maybe you've had family

  1056. coming from afar

1057. and so what do you do?

  1058. You prepare their room,

  1059. right?

  1060. You make the bed,

1061. you write a little card

  1062. on the bed,

  1063. you put chocolates

  1064. on the bed

1065. and you clear out the junk

  1066. out of the cupboards

1067. and you make their room ready

  1068. and prepare them room

1069. for your guests to come,

  1070. right?

  1071. Friends,

1072. what does it look like

1073. for us to prepare him room

  1074. in our hearts,

1075. to clear out the junk

  1076. and to welcome

1077. heaven and earth's true king?

1078. What does it look like

1079. to fall on our knees

  1080. and say,

  1081. Christ,

1082. come and have your way

  1083. in my life?

  1084. Friends,

  1085. this Christmas,

  1086. Christ is coming.

  1087. Let every heart

  1088. prepare him room.

  1089. Let every heart

  1090. receive heaven and earth's

  1091. true king.

1092. But here's the second thing.

1093. At the end of Revelation 22

  1094. it says this,

1095. the spirit and the bride

  1096. say,

  1097. come

  1098. and let the one

  1099. who hears come.

  1100. Let the one

  1101. who is thirsty come.

  1102. Let he who desires

  1103. take of the water

  1104. of life without price.

  1105. Jesus issues us

  1106. an invitation.

  1107. He says,

  1108. I am coming

  1109. but why don't you

  1110. come first?

  1111. Come and receive

  1112. the gift of life

  1113. that I give.

  1114. At the end of

  1115. Matthew chapter 2

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  1116. you know the story

  1117. of the wise men?

  1118. There's an amazing line

  1119. where it says,

  1120. and they went home

  1121. a different way.

  1122. Remember they went

  1123. and they found Jesus

  1124. and they anticipated

  1125. going back to Jerusalem

  1126. and telling Herod

  1127. about the newborn king

  1128. but they were told

  1129. in a dream

1130. that Herod was a charlatan

1131. and so they went home

  1132. a different way.

  1133. Friends,

1134. maybe you came to church

  1135. with one attitude today.

  1136. Maybe Jesus wants you

  1137. to go home

  1138. a different way.

  1139. To go home

  1140. a different person.

  1141. To go home

  1142. with new hope,

  1143. with new joy

  1144. in your heart

  1145. because you've received

  1146. heaven and earth

  1147. true king.

  1148. Friends,

  1149. Christ has come

  1150. and He's coming again.

  1151. Let's open our hearts

  1152. and receive Him.

  1153. Let's come and drink

  1154. of His grace.

  1155. Let's come and worship

  1156. Him together.

  1157. Friends,

  1158. Christmas calls us

  1159. to a living faith

1160. in the midst of a broken

  1161. and fractured world

  1162. because Christmas

  1163. hasn't yet finished

  1164. being written.

  1165. It anticipates

  1166. Christ coming again.

  1167. So let's open up

  1168. our lives

1169. and open up our hearts

  1170. and receive Him.

  1171. Let's live with hope

  1172. and faith this year.

  1173. Joy and love

  1174. knowing that Christ

  1175. has come

1176. and He's coming again soon.

  1177. Let's pray together.

  1178. Father God,

  1179. thank you for

  1180. every one of us

  1181. here today.

  1182. For the children,

  1183. for the elderly,

  1184. for those that are

  1185. just beginning their lives

  1186. and those that are

  1187. in the second half

  1188. of their lives.

1189. For those that are seekers

1190. and those that are worshippers.

  1191. God,

1192. for those that have come

  1193. from afar

  1194. and those that call

  1195. Hong Kong home.

  1196. God,

  1197. we thank you

  1198. for every gift

  1199. of grace this morning.

  1200. Lord,

1201. we thank you for Christmas

  1202. and I pray that

1203. as we make our way

  1204. into 2023,

  1205. God,

  1206. we will live with

  1207. living faith

  1208. and living hope

  1209. because you,

  1210. Christ,

  1211. on the throne,

1212. you rule and you reign

  1213. and you come again

1214. to make all things new.

  1215. Jesus,

  1216. thank you

  1217. for the promise

  1218. of Christmas,

  1219. the hope,

  1220. the joy,

  1221. the celebration

  1222. of Christmas.

  1223. We praise you

  1224. and we love you.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.
