  1. Father, we give you thanks and praise that as we gather as your people in your presence

  2. to sing your praises, to pray to you, and to hear your word, we give you thanks and

  3. praise that you desire us to have a true and accurate knowledge of ourselves in the context

  4. of the gospel and the context of hope.

  5. We thank you, Father, that you want us to know ourselves in the context of hope, that

  6. you can and will work within us to make us more whole, more free, more at one with truth

  7. and goodness and justice.

  8. So we ask, Father, that you would do that gentle but deep and powerful work in our midst as

  9. we enter into thinking about your word.

  10. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  11. Amen.

  12. Please be seated.

  13. I've shared this with you before.

  14. It's one of my character flaws, of which I have many.

  15. And I'm not very good at telling people off.

  16. When they've been doing something which is wrong and it needs to be corrected, I'm just

  17. not very good at it.

  18. I think I'm better at it than I was 10 years ago and better at it than I was 20 years ago,

  19. but it's just never been something that I've been very good at.

  20. And those times when I do finally confront a person about what they've done wrong that

  21. needs to be corrected.

  22. I can usually tell within, I was going to say a minute, but really it's probably within

  23. less than 30 seconds.

  24. I can tell within less than 30 seconds whether this is going to go really well or really bad.

  25. You can tell just by the way the person starts to receive it, whether they're going to be

  26. sort of penitent, whether they're going to acknowledge that they've done something wrong.

  27. And it's often, you can almost see them, if you were to videotape it, you can almost see

  28. them not slumping, but almost like puffing up their chest and moving forward and almost

  29. clenching their hands because they're going to fight you over this.

  30. They're going to point the finger at you and, or me I should say, and really be aggressive.

  31. And I can tell fairly quickly in a conversation whether it's going to go bad or not.

  32. Why is this?

  33. Not that why am I bad at confronting people?

  34. That's a whole, you know, that's a whole other topic of conversation.

  35. But why is it that, why is it that sometimes, not just others, but us, when we're confronted

  36. of something that we do wrong, why is it that we don't feel guilty, or maybe we do feel guilty,

  37. but our response isn't to say that we're sorry.

  38. Our response is to lash out, to get angry, to push back in a very, very hard way.

  39. And why is it at the same time, like in a bit of a similar type of thing, why is it that

  40. sometimes if we've been having a discussion with somebody, a friend or a family member,

  41. and we've made certain types of claims about things being true, and then maybe the next

  42. day you see it, that you see, you know, some really, really solid evidence that what you

  43. said was true is wrong.

  44. And what the other person was saying was true was correct.

  45. And when you see that, it doesn't make you happy.

  46. It makes you sad.

  47. And in fact, actually, not only might it make you sad that you've been incorrect and they're

  48. correct, but it might make you want to do things to try to, well, to make it look like

  49. either you didn't say it, or they didn't say it, or they're still wrong, or whatever.

  50. Like, why is it that that goes on in us as individuals?

  51. And of course, we can then extend it to what we see in politics and in culture and in the

  52. media and everything like that.

  53. But why is it that those two types of things is part of the human experience?

  54. The Bible text that we have today, the two texts, the two stories or incidents that we

  55. have in, we're going to look at today in the Gospel of Mark, is actually a very interesting

  56. meditation upon these two questions.

  57. And it's a meditation that actually has, it both is quite confronting, but it's actually

  58. also very deeply filled with hope.

  59. Hope that we can be better than that, or a way to be a little bit, or be a lot more better

  60. than that.

  61. So let's have a look at it.

  62. If you're following along in these, which we've given out, if you don't have one, there's

  63. still a few left, you can pick it up either now or after the service.

  64. It's Mark chapter 11, verse 27.

    Mark 11:27

  65. And if you're following along in this booklet, it's page 70, at the very bottom of the page.

  66. And just a reminder, Mark, it looks all fancy now, but it's an ancient eyewitness biography,

  67. eyewitness-based biography of Jesus.

  68. It's one of four ancient eyewitness-based biographies of Jesus written, while literally thousands

  69. of eyewitnesses were still alive and could have refuted it.

  70. And in terms of, he tells it like a story, and in the story, sort of a bit of a climax

  71. or a low mat, depending on how you look at it, as a climax, or maybe it's like a bit of

  72. a pit, that he announces he's going to go to Jerusalem and he's going to be captured,

  73. he's going to be killed.

  74. And that's in chapter 8.

  75. And now, just we looked at last week, he's finally come to Jerusalem.

  76. And we now know, but the people in the stories don't know, that within a couple of days, he'll

  77. be dying on a cross, and then he'll be buried.

  78. And so this story is written within that context.

  79. We know that, maybe some of you don't, but we know it.

  80. But Jesus has predicted that he's going to die in Jerusalem.

  81. And it didn't maybe look at that at first because of the triumphal entry, but we know

  82. that he's predicted it.

  83. So what happens?

  84. Look here, verse...

  85. Oh yeah, the other thing here that is important, just to know if you don't know the Bible very

  86. well, is that what's just happened before this is what's called the cleansing of the

  87. temple, where there were a whole pile of merchants taking up the area where pagans were supposed

  88. to be allowed to come and worship God.

  89. And Jesus has driven them all out.

  90. He's caused chaos and driven them all out of the temple area with just overturning tables

  91. and everything like that.

  92. And that's just sort of happened the day or two before this.

  93. And now we have this incident.

  94. Verse 27.

  95. And they, that's Jesus and his disciples, came again to Jerusalem.

  96. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came

  97. to him.

  98. And they said to him, by what authority are you doing these things or who gave you this

  99. authority to do them?

  100. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  101. This is, I've said this many times, but it's an important thing to remember.

  102. However, we live in a, unless you're a conspiracy theorist and think the World Economic Forum

  103. or, you know, Jewish people or, I don't know, Davos people or whatever, or, you know, is controlling

  104. all of the different groups in society.

  105. Apart from that, what we have in our day and age is we have very, we have separate types

  106. of elites.

  107. But that didn't exist at the time of Jesus.

  108. So when it talks about chief priests and scribes and elders, it's not talking about sort of

  109. like a Roman Catholic priest, a scribe being like a writer of a newspaper or a writer of

  110. novels and an elder being an old person.

  111. What it is, it's actually describing what's called the Sanhedrin.

  112. So Jerusalem, Israel, the Jewish people are under Roman occupation.

  113. And the Romans, they actually gave a lot of leeway for local management.

  114. And as long as the peace was kept and as long as tax dollars kept going up to the Romans,

  115. they allowed the Jewish people to basically govern themselves.

  116. And so what we have here is we have the three leading groups all together.

  117. It's called the Sanhedrin.

  118. And what you need to think of, it would be as if the spiritual elite, the literary elite,

  119. the political elite, the cultural elite, the intellectual elite, the commercial elite,

  120. the legal elite, the educational elite, that all of those elites are just one body.

  121. Like in our culture, there's lots of different groups.

  122. But in that time, there was just this one group that was all unified.

  123. And so that's the representatives of that one unified group.

  124. So in our days and age, it's Amazon and Apple and the Globe and Mail and the University of Toronto

  125. and McGill, the representatives of that one group all coming and saying to Jesus,

  126. by what authority are you doing these things?

  127. And it's a very interesting question because just to remind us,

  128. there's a difference between authority and power.

  129. Like a little bit of an illustration and maybe make why they're bothered.

  130. You know, the last little while, there's been odd things going on in England.

  131. People throwing tomato soup, cans of tomato soup or mashed potatoes on works of art.

  132. And then after they've done that, they glue themselves to the seat or the wall or whatever.

  133. And we might say, by what authority are you?

  134. But you don't ask them by what power you do it because they just did it.

  135. Like you don't ask Jesus by what power did you drive them all?

  136. Well, we know you did it.

  137. Authority is a different type of question.

  138. Like what justifies it?

  139. What gives you the right to be able to do something like that?

  140. You know, and I don't want to get you on the sideline as to what the climate change people would say,

  141. but that's the same type of thing.

  142. Like you just did this, caused this huge, huge big mess.

  143. Like what gives you the right?

  144. What gives you the authority to do that?

  145. That's the question which they ask.

  146. So how does Jesus answer the question?

  147. Well, let's look.

  148. Verse 29.

  149. Jesus said to them, I will ask you one question.

  150. Answer me.

  151. And I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

  152. Here's the question.

  153. Was the baptism of John the Baptist from heaven or from human beings?

  154. Answer me.

  155. Now, this is not an evasion.

  156. This is not him cloaking.

  157. This isn't trying to deflect the question.

  158. This isn't him trying to buy time.

  159. He's actually doing something which is very profound that we can learn from.

  160. One of the problems that we have often is that we just merely answer questions,

  161. but we don't answer the questioner, the person.

  162. And I don't mean in a bad way, like going after the questioner,

  163. because Jesus isn't at all threatening here.

  164. But it's very important in life that you don't just think of the question.

  165. You think of the person asking the question.

  166. And you don't want to just merely answer a question.

  167. You want to answer the person who's asking the question.

  168. And that's what Jesus is modeling here.

  169. And his question is a way to help the questioner, the person,

  170. come to a certain degree of self-knowledge,

  171. and also actually for Jesus to learn a little bit more about the questioner

  172. so that there can be, in fact, a really good answer

  173. that not only answers the question, but the person.

  174. So this is an evasion.

  175. And some of you might be thinking,

  176. what exactly is it that John the Baptist said?

  177. So if you just flip in your Bibles to Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  178. and if you're using this, it's actually the page doesn't have a number.

  179. It's at the very beginning, obviously, page 6.

  180. And this will help to refresh our memories

  181. as to why it is that Jesus says to them,

  182. the baptism of John the Baptist,

  183. was it from heaven or was it from...

  184. And heaven means from God.

  185. And here's how Mark begins his story of Jesus,

  186. his biography of Jesus.

  187. The beginning of the gospel, which means good news,

  188. the beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  189. And Mark quotes Isaiah,

  190. as it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

  191. Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

  192. who will prepare your way,

  193. the voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  194. prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

  195. So just pause.

  196. What Mark is saying here is that

  197. as you're going to read the rest of the gospel,

  198. we're going to meet John the Baptist,

  199. and John the Baptist is fulfilling this prophecy

  200. from 600 years earlier.

  201. John the Baptist is that messenger who's come

  202. to prepare the way of the Lord.

  203. And, you know, to our Muslim friends,

  204. I would say this is one of many texts in the Bible

  205. which is showing you that the Mark

  206. and the Christians in the Bible

  207. teaches that Jesus is God.

  208. John the Baptist has come to prepare the way of the Lord.

  209. What exactly did John the Baptist say?

  210. Look at verse 4.

  211. John appeared baptizing in the wilderness

  212. and proclaiming a baptism of repentance

  213. for the forgiveness of sin.

  214. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem

  215. were going out to him

  216. and were being baptized by him in the River Jordan,

  217. confessing their sins.

  218. Now, John the Baptist was clothed with camel's hair

  219. and wore a leather belt around his waist

  220. and ate locusts and wild honey.

  221. He was a bit of a hippie.

  222. And he preached, saying,

  223. after me comes he who is mightier than I,

  224. the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy

  225. to stoop down and untie.

  226. I have baptized you with water,

  227. but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

  228. And so what he's saying here is that

  229. this person he's about to introduce,

  230. we're going to see that in the next few verses,

  231. is vastly greater than him.

  232. And John the Baptist is a prophet.

  233. And only God can send...

  234. The baptism of the Holy Spirit

  235. is this idea that the Holy Spirit

  236. can actually flood you.

  237. You can be immersed in God the Holy Spirit.

  238. And only God can do that,

  239. not a human being.

  240. And now look at the next page,

  241. the actual baptism of Jesus.

  242. So part of what we've just seen

  243. is the message of John the Baptist

  244. and his baptisms.

  245. And then we see the actual baptism of Jesus

  246. and John the Baptist,

  247. who's going to be bearing witness

  248. to what happened.

  249. Verse 9,

  250. In those days,

  251. Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee

  252. and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.

  253. And when Jesus came up out of the water,

  254. immediately,

  255. and now actually the he,

  256. it's not clear in the original language

  257. whether it means Jesus

  258. or whether it means John the Baptist,

  259. or it could mean both,

  260. immediately he saw the heavens being torn open

  261. and the Holy Spirit descending on him.

  262. That's now Jesus like a dove.

  263. And a voice came from heaven,

  264. You are my beloved son.

  265. With you, I am well pleased.

  266. Now, every one of my children

  267. has the same nature as me.

  268. We're both human beings.

  269. And if a dog has puppies,

  270. those puppies have the same nature

  271. as the mother and the father.

  272. And so here we have another very clear claim

  273. that Jesus is actually God.

  274. He's God the Son.

  275. God the Father

  276. and God the Holy Spirit

  277. bearing witness

  278. that Jesus is God's Son.

  279. Now, let's go back to our text

  280. now that we've sort of been reminded

  281. about what it is that John the Baptist said.

  282. If you turn back to Mark chapter 11,

    Mark 11:30

  283. verse 30, 31.

  284. And by the way, just so you know,

  285. one of the things which is so interesting

  286. about the time of Jesus

  287. is that John the Baptist

  288. was well-known to historians.

  289. The Jewish historian Josephus

  290. has a lot of information

  291. about the life of John the Baptist.

  292. John the Baptist really was viewed as a prophet.

  293. He really was wildly popular.

  294. He really is known to history

  295. outside of the New Testament.

  296. And so Jesus says,

  297. you know, back to what the question is,

  298. okay, John the Baptist,

  299. you've asked me by what authority

  300. I've done these things.

  301. I'm going to ask you the,

  302. you know, the question is,

  303. does the baptism of John from heaven,

  304. in other words, from God

  305. or from human beings answer me?

  306. So verse 31,

  307. we get what goes on

  308. now in the questioners, right?

  309. Jesus isn't just going to answer the question.

  310. He's answering the questioner.

  311. Verse 31,

  312. and they, the elite,

  313. discuss it with one another,

  314. saying, hmm,

  315. if we say from heaven,

  316. he will say then,

  317. why did he not believe John the Baptist?

  318. But if we say from human beings,

  319. they were afraid of the people,

  320. for they all held that John the Baptist

  321. really was a prophet.

  322. So, they answered Jesus,

  323. we do not know.

  324. And Jesus said to them,

  325. neither will I tell you

  326. by what authority I do these things.

  327. Now,

  328. there's several things in here,

  329. of course, which is very important.

  330. John the Baptist is really telling us

  331. that when we see Jesus dying on the cross,

  332. we're seeing God die on the cross.

  333. But what's really going on here,

  334. just for now, very briefly,

  335. is that it's not that they don't know.

  336. Right?

  337. It's not that the questioners don't know.

  338. What is it?

  339. The questioners don't want to know.

  340. They don't want to know.

  341. And that means they cannot know.

  342. And if they cannot know,

  343. there's no answer that Jesus can give them

  344. that would allow them to know,

  345. other than to puzzle over

  346. how he asked them a question

  347. which revealed,

  348. if they're at all attentive,

  349. that the problem is inside of them.

  350. They don't want to know.

  351. So, here's part of the thing,

  352. which, remember I said,

  353. this is a profound meditation.

  354. It's opening to us something

  355. which the Bible teaches in many places,

  356. is that there is a part of you

  357. that finds the truth a threat.

  358. There is a part of you

  359. that finds the truth a threat.

  360. And that part can grow and grow and grow.

  361. In fact, that's what we're going to see here

  362. with these particular people.

  363. They find the truth a threat,

  364. and it's going to grow.

  365. And it's going to grow to the point

  366. that they killed Jesus.

  367. But it's not just saying that,

  368. it's not just saying this

  369. about how bad these guys were.

  370. It's making a far more basic comment

  371. about every single one of us,

  372. that if we're honest,

  373. remember I gave you that opening thing,

  374. why is it that sometimes if we hear,

  375. we've been in a conversation,

  376. maybe even an argument with somebody

  377. about what actually happened

  378. or what was true,

  379. and then we discover later on

  380. that we're wrong and they're right.

  381. And that fills us not with happiness

  382. that we know the truth,

  383. but with sadness

  384. that we're wrong.

  385. And all of us have had experiences,

  386. and probably if we were a married couple here,

  387. we could each look at the other,

  388. because we can all think of a time

  389. when they did that,

  390. and they're looking back at us

  391. and thinking of a time

  392. that we did that,

  393. where some type of truth is given,

  394. and it's obvious that it's the truth,

  395. but we fight back against it.

  396. We reject it.

  397. We push it away.

  398. We try to use our cleverness

  399. to reinterpret it

  400. or give a different lens

  401. or just insult the person

  402. that they're too stupid

  403. to possibly know.

  404. And this text is not saying,

  405. like if you say,

  406. George,

  407. are you saying that Christians

  408. then are sort of better

  409. than other people,

  410. that we're immune to that,

  411. that we've been able

  412. to figure out the truth,

  413. and no,

  414. that's not what Christians,

  415. I mean,

  416. some Christians say that.

  417. And all I can say

  418. is that the Bible says

  419. that Christians who say that

  420. and think that

  421. are deceiving themselves.

  422. The Bible here

  423. is revealing a human problem,

  424. and it's revealing

  425. a human problem

  426. that helps us to know

  427. why it is that

  428. I need a Savior,

  429. because there is a part of me

  430. that will reject the truth

  431. and find the truth a threat.

  432. And that's why,

  433. one of the many reasons

  434. that I need a Savior.

  435. And it's an invitation

  436. for us to look at this

  437. and say,

  438. Lord, how much is this true of me?

  439. Like, am I not even aware

  440. of the fact that

  441. when certain things come my way

  442. that I react in such a way

  443. and I push it away?

  444. Like, is it me, Lord?

  445. Help me to understand

  446. that it's me

  447. and help me to not be like that,

  448. to be changed.

  449. I don't want that

  450. to be the story of my life.

  451. In fact, actually,

  452. what the Bible is telling us

  453. is another thing

  454. which is very,

  455. even, you see,

  456. part of the thing

  457. is this truth itself

  458. is going to be offensive

  459. to many,

  460. because for many of us,

  461. our identity is that

  462. we're not like those naive people.

  463. We're people who suspend judgment.

  464. We're not like those naive people.

  465. We're a skeptic.

  466. We're not like those simple-minded people.

  467. We're too intelligent

  468. to actually believe such simple things.

  469. We're not like those simple people.

  470. We're open-minded.

  471. But these are just actual ways

  472. that we flatter ourselves

  473. and deceive ourselves

  474. that we find the truth a threat

  475. at times.

  476. Not all the time, obviously,

  477. but at times.

  478. And that that part can grow.

  479. See, by the way,

  480. just a bit of an aside,

  481. that's one of the reasons

  482. why science

  483. is a moral project,

  484. not just a technical project.

  485. Engineering.

  486. There has to be the desire

  487. to know the truth

  488. and to not be threatened by it.

  489. Now, the Bible here is very wise.

  490. It doesn't just say

  491. this is an intellectual problem,

  492. but it also is actually

  493. a problem connected

  494. to how we relate

  495. to what is right and wrong

  496. and how we relate

  497. to justice.

  498. That the Bible is very wise

  499. and it connects things

  500. which we separate.

  501. Because we tend to separate

  502. as if we have like the mind

  503. and intellectual things.

  504. And then there's the

  505. how we know right and wrong.

  506. And then we know

  507. how there's justice

  508. and injustice.

  509. And we tend to keep

  510. these two things,

  511. the right and wrong

  512. and justice and injustice.

  513. We might connect those.

  514. But often we think

  515. that right and wrong

  516. is just sort of over here

  517. and not really connected to this.

  518. But the Bible

  519. constantly pushes us

  520. to understand

  521. that how our mind

  522. and how our conscience

  523. and how our will

  524. and our emotions

  525. and our appreciation

  526. of beauty

  527. and our understanding

  528. of justice,

  529. that those all ultimately

  530. come down to one central

  531. fundamental root

  532. which the Bible

  533. calls the heart.

  534. And that these things

  535. aren't different,

  536. but they're all

  537. in a sense

  538. co-inhere with each other.

  539. They're all connected

  540. to each other.

  541. And you can't put them

  542. in separate bubbles

  543. at water-type bubbles

  544. or areas.

  545. That they're all

  546. connected to each other.

  547. And the Bible shows this

  548. not by just describing

  549. it the way I do,

  550. but just by the flow

  551. of the story

  552. because the very next story

  553. touches on how we relate

  554. to right and wrong

  555. and how we relate

  556. to justice and injustice.

  557. Look what happens

  558. in chapter 12, verse 1.

  559. And Jesus began

  560. to speak to them

  561. in parables.

  562. Now what's going

  563. to happen here

  564. is he's going

  565. to give a parable

  566. and then he's going

  567. to ask a question.

  568. He's going to give

  569. the answer

  570. and he's going

  571. to give the Bible

  572. passage.

  573. And the Bible

  574. passage is the hope.

  575. And then we're going

  576. to see how

  577. the original questioners

  578. who are still there

  579. and their moral,

  580. their intellectual,

  581. in a sense,

  582. refusal,

  583. their feeling threatened

  584. by the truth

  585. is also now connected

  586. to these being threatened

  587. by justice

  588. and by goodness.

  589. So let's see the story.

  590. It goes like this.

  591. Verse 1 again.

  592. And he began to speak

  593. to them in parables.

  594. A man planted a vineyard

  595. and put a fence around it

  596. and dug a pit

  597. for the wine press

  598. and built a tower

  599. and leased it

  600. to tenants

  601. and went into

  602. another country.

  603. And just pause.

  604. The commentaries tell me

  605. this was very,

  606. very common

  607. economic arrangement

  608. at the time

  609. that Jesus was speaking.

  610. Like we might look

  611. at it a bit off.

  612. It was very common,

  613. very, very common.

  614. Verse 2.

  615. When the season came,

  616. that is the harvest,

  617. he,

  618. that is the man,

  619. the owner,

  620. he sent a servant

  621. to the tenants

  622. to get from them

  623. some of the fruit

  624. of the vineyard.

  625. In other words,

  626. they have to,

  627. they've leased it,

  628. now they have to

  629. make their lease payments.

  630. And,

  631. but how did the people,

  632. the tenants react?

  633. Well,

  634. should they pay

  635. the lease payments?

  636. No.

  637. Verse 3.

  638. They took the messenger

  639. and beat him

  640. and sent him away

  641. handed.

  642. So the owner,

  643. verse 4,

  644. sent to them

  645. another servant.

  646. And the tenants

  647. struck that fellow

  648. on the head,

  649. treated him shamefully.

  650. Don't give him

  651. any money.

  652. So the owner,

  653. verse 5,

  654. sends another.

  655. And this person

  656. they kill.

  657. And it goes on

  658. and on and on.

  659. So,

  660. verse 4.

  661. And so with many others.

  662. The owner keeps

  663. sending people

  664. and the people

  665. that he sends,

  666. some of them

  667. they beat

  668. and some of them

  669. they kill.

  670. So verse 8,

  671. he thinks to himself,

  672. okay,

  673. I still have one other

  674. that I can send.

  675. It's my,

  676. look at this,

  677. a beloved son.

  678. Remember chapter 1?

  679. This is my beloved son.

  680. And if you go back

  681. and you look at

  682. Mark chapter 9

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  683. where God speaks again

  684. at the transfiguration,

  685. Jesus is described

  686. as my beloved son.

  687. And so now we have here

  688. for us who are reading this,

  689. a beloved son is sent.

  690. Finally he sent him,

  691. he sent him,

  692. the beloved son,

  693. to them,

  694. the tenants,

  695. saying,

  696. they will respect my son

  697. like surely,

  698. good grief,

  699. they'll respect my son.

  700. But those tenants,

  701. verse 7,

  702. said to one another,

  703. this is the heir,

  704. the only heir.

  705. Come,

  706. let us kill him

  707. and the inheritance

  708. will be ours.

  709. and they took

  710. the beloved son

  711. and killed him

  712. and threw him

  713. out of the vineyard.

  714. Now that's the story.

  715. And by the way,

  716. what Jesus is doing

  717. is in some ways,

  718. this is one way

  719. to summarize

  720. almost all

  721. of the Old Testament.

  722. What our Jewish friends

  723. call the Torah

  724. or the Tanakh,

  725. where God sends,

  726. I mean,

  727. the whole fall

  728. begins because

  729. Adam and Eve

  730. want to dethrone God

  731. and become,

  732. in a sense,

  733. the owner

  734. of the garden.

  735. And time after time,

  736. prophet is sent.

  737. Some of them

  738. they ignore,

  739. some of them

  740. they listen to,

  741. but most often

  742. they ignore them,

  743. they beat them,

  744. and some of them

  745. they even kill them.

  746. And Jesus is saying

  747. he's the end

  748. of that process,

  749. the beloved son.

  750. So what's the question?

  751. Jesus asks them,

  752. what will the owner

  753. of the vineyard do?

  754. Then he gives an answer.

  755. What's the just answer?

  756. Now we as Canadians

  757. don't like capital punishment,

  758. but the answer is

  759. he will come

  760. and destroy the tenants

  761. and give the vineyard

  762. to others.

  763. And we would ultimately

  764. all say

  765. that that's the right thing.

  766. Like, I mean,

  767. if one of us

  768. owned a house

  769. and we were leasing

  770. it out to somebody

  771. and the people

  772. never were paying,

  773. we would want

  774. eventually the police

  775. to go and

  776. arrest those people

  777. and sue them

  778. and we'd want

  779. to get their money

  780. and even if it means

  781. that every last penny

  782. of theirs is taken away,

  783. we'd want to get

  784. what was ours.

  785. That's just and right

  786. in terms of the story.

  787. And now Jesus quotes

  788. the Bible

  789. and here's what he says,

  790. verse 10,

  791. have you not read

  792. this scripture?

  793. And he quotes

  794. from Psalm 118,

  795. which was recognized

  796. in Jesus' day

  797. as a Messianic psalm.

  798. And here it is,

  799. the stone

  800. that the builders

  801. rejected

  802. has become

  803. the cornerstone.

  804. This was the Lord's doing

  805. and it is marvelous

  806. in our eyes.

  807. And I'm going to explain

  808. in a moment

  809. what this means.

  810. But notice here

  811. how it is

  812. that the same people

  813. who found truth

  814. a threat,

  815. how they hear

  816. this description

  817. of right and wrong

  818. and justice

  819. a threat.

  820. Verse 12,

  821. what's their response?

  822. Their response is,

  823. and they were seeking

  824. to arrest Jesus

  825. but feared the people

  826. for they perceived

  827. that he had told

  828. the parable against them.

  829. So they left him

  830. and went away.

  831. Now,

  832. the fact of the matter is,

  833. Jesus is predicting here

  834. that he's going to die.

  835. And in fact,

  836. he's correct.

  837. Within a couple of days,

  838. those very same people

  839. will have figured out

  840. a way to conspire

  841. with Rome,

  842. pressure Rome

  843. and conspire

  844. with Judas

  845. to have Jesus

  846. isolated,

  847. falsely accused,

  848. falsely condemned,

  849. killed unjustly

  850. for political expedience

  851. reasons

  852. of the Roman imperial power,

  853. crucified,

  854. and die.

  855. That's all going to come true

  856. in a couple of days.

  857. It's very interesting

  858. that their response

  859. to recognizing

  860. that this story

  861. is against them,

  862. that they're plotting

  863. to kill him.

  864. It doesn't go,

  865. good grief,

  866. is that me?

  867. Like,

  868. am I really

  869. so blind

  870. to what's right?

  871. Am I really

  872. so blind

  873. to injustice

  874. that I would respond

  875. with anger at this?

  876. Is that me?

  877. me?

  878. No,

  879. the fact of the matter

  880. is there is a part

  881. of you

  882. that finds justice

  883. and finds the good

  884. a threat.

  885. And me.

  886. I'm not just saying

  887. you and me.

  888. There is a part of me

  889. that finds at times

  890. justice

  891. a threat,

  892. that finds the good

  893. a threat,

  894. and that part

  895. can grow.

  896. There are some

  897. very important

  898. thoughts here

  899. that are

  900. captured in this

  901. whole story.

  902. If your center,

  903. if a person's

  904. center,

  905. or if a

  906. significant part

  907. of your personality,

  908. if a significant

  909. part of your

  910. thinking,

  911. if you're

  912. centered on

  913. your personal

  914. power,

  915. or the power

  916. of your group,

  917. your center

  918. isn't really

  919. on what's true,

  920. your center

  921. isn't really

  922. on what's good,

  923. your center

  924. isn't really

  925. on what is just,

  926. but the fact

  927. of the matter

  928. is your center

  929. is deeply

  930. connected

  931. to personal

  932. power.

  933. What the Bible

  934. is suggesting

  935. to us

  936. is that you

  937. will always

  938. be anxious.

  939. You will

  940. always

  941. be fragile.

  942. You will

  943. always

  944. be insecure.

  945. You will

  946. always

  947. feel

  948. threatened.

  949. And you

  950. will never

  951. find

  952. peace.

  953. Never.

  954. Because if

  955. it's all about

  956. your power,

  957. you're always

  958. under threat.

  959. Like good grief,

  960. it's all about

  961. your personal

  962. power,

  963. you'll notice

  964. every,

  965. you know,

  966. it's all about

  967. your beauty,

  968. and that personal

  969. power from beauty,

  970. you'll notice

  971. every zit,

  972. you'll notice

  973. every wrinkle,

  974. you'll notice

  975. every little

  976. bulge.

  977. It's always

  978. about you

  979. being,

  980. not just

  981. knowing the

  982. truth,

  983. but being

  984. the smartest.

  985. You're always

  986. going to be

  987. threatened by

  988. some little,

  989. you know,

  990. irk,

  991. some 12-year-old

  992. who's way

  993. smarter than

  994. you,

  995. or some new

  996. hire that's

  997. way smarter

  998. than you.

  999. You will

  1000. always be

  1001. insecure and

  1002. anxious.

  1003. You will

  1004. always be.

  1005. But you

  1006. know the

  1007. thing is,

  1008. and we all

  1009. know this

  1010. at a very,

  1011. very deep

  1012. level,

  1013. you see,

  1014. because the

  1015. very nature

  1016. of my

  1017. personal power

  1018. is that

  1019. others are

  1020. now going

  1021. to be a

  1022. threat,

  1023. but the

  1024. truth is

  1025. shareable.

  1026. Goodness is

  1027. shareable.

  1028. Justice is

  1029. shareable.

  1030. And the

  1031. truth doesn't

  1032. make you

  1033. anxious.

  1034. I mean,

  1035. it does when

  1036. it's threatening

  1037. your power,

  1038. but when you

  1039. actually just,

  1040. well, that's

  1041. just the

  1042. truth.

  1043. Yeah, yeah,

  1044. yeah,

  1045. I'm not going

  1046. to be very

  1047. popular if I

  1048. say that.

  1049. I'm not

  1050. going to be

  1051. very popular

  1052. that I

  1053. believe,

  1054. but it's

  1055. just the

  1056. truth.

  1057. It's just

  1058. true.

  1059. And why

  1060. is it that?

  1061. Why is it

  1062. that power

  1063. makes you

  1064. anxious,

  1065. but truth,

  1066. and knowing

  1067. what's right,

  1068. and walking

  1069. with what's

  1070. right, and

  1071. walking with

  1072. what's just,

  1073. and walking

  1074. with what's

  1075. true, why

  1076. is it that

  1077. those things

  1078. don't create

  1079. anxiety?

  1080. It's because

  1081. you were

  1082. made for

  1083. it.

  1084. You were

  1085. made for

  1086. truth.

  1087. You were

  1088. made for

  1089. justice.

  1090. You were

  1091. made for

  1092. goodness.

  1093. Augustine,

  1094. many years

  1095. ago, said,

  1096. you have

  1097. made us

  1098. for yourself,

  1099. and our

  1100. hearts are

  1101. restless till

  1102. they rest

  1103. in you.

  1104. You see,

  1105. Christians,

  1106. once again,

  1107. aren't saying

  1108. that we don't

  1109. have any of

  1110. these problems.

  1111. No,

  1112. Christians are

  1113. saying we

  1114. need a

  1115. Savior.

  1116. It's proof

  1117. that we

  1118. need a

  1119. Savior,

  1120. and it's

  1121. an invitation

  1122. for it to

  1123. say,

  1124. Lord,

  1125. in what

  1126. ways is

  1127. this me?

  1128. But why

  1129. is this

  1130. all set

  1131. in the

  1132. context of

  1133. hope?

  1134. Look again,

  1135. if Claire

  1136. can put it

  1137. up,

  1138. look again

  1139. what verse

  1140. 10 and

  1141. 11,

  1142. the Bible

  1143. passage that

  1144. Jesus shares,

  1145. that they

  1146. don't listen

  1147. to because

  1148. they're

  1149. threatened by

  1150. what's right

  1151. and wrong.

  1152. They're

  1153. threatened by

  1154. justice,

  1155. and they

  1156. respond by

  1157. anger.

  1158. But listen

  1159. to what

  1160. Jesus says.

  1161. He quotes

  1162. the psalm,

  1163. the stone

  1164. that the

  1165. builders

  1166. rejected.

  1167. You know

  1168. they're

  1169. looking for

  1170. stones.

  1171. There's a stone,

  1172. throw it out.

  1173. But it's

  1174. actually the

  1175. cornerstone of

  1176. something that

  1177. God wants

  1178. to build.

  1179. And this

  1180. thing,

  1181. which was

  1182. rejected,

  1183. and it

  1184. looks like a

  1185. tragedy,

  1186. and it

  1187. looks like a

  1188. defeat,

  1189. but it's

  1190. actually the

  1191. Lord's doing.

  1192. And it's

  1193. marvelous in

  1194. our eyes.

  1195. This act of

  1196. rejection,

  1197. this act of

  1198. evil,

  1199. God uses for

  1200. good to

  1201. build something

  1202. new,

  1203. and strong,

  1204. and stable.

  1205. Because on

  1206. one level,

  1207. every single

  1208. person would

  1209. want to say,

  1210. I want to

  1211. be a person

  1212. of the

  1213. truth,

  1214. not a

  1215. person of

  1216. the lie.

  1217. I want to

  1218. be a person

  1219. of the

  1220. good,

  1221. not a

  1222. person of

  1223. the evil.

  1224. I want to

  1225. be a person

  1226. of the

  1227. just,

  1228. not the

  1229. unjust.

  1230. That's

  1231. where I

  1232. want to

  1233. live.

  1234. I want

  1235. to live

  1236. in that

  1237. country,

  1238. in that

  1239. land,

  1240. where truth

  1241. is what

  1242. we feed

  1243. on,

  1244. and what

  1245. we live

  1246. out of.

  1247. I want

  1248. to live

  1249. in that

  1250. place where

  1251. goodness is

  1252. what I

  1253. live on,

  1254. and what

  1255. I feed

  1256. on,

  1257. and where

  1258. I live,

  1259. and justice,

  1260. and beauty,

  1261. that's where

  1262. I want to

  1263. live.

  1264. And Jesus

  1265. is saying,

  1266. you know,

  1267. when you

  1268. see me

  1269. dying on

  1270. the cross,

  1271. you see me

  1272. being rejected,

  1273. but actually

  1274. what you

  1275. really need

  1276. to see is

  1277. that I'm

  1278. doing something,

  1279. God is doing

  1280. something marvelous,

  1281. and is building

  1282. something different

  1283. and marvelous.

  1284. You're seeing

  1285. truth,

  1286. truth itself

  1287. dying for

  1288. lies,

  1289. so that we

  1290. might be

  1291. one with

  1292. the truth.

  1293. You're seeing

  1294. justice dying,

  1295. in a sense,

  1296. for the unjust,

  1297. so that we,

  1298. by accepting it,

  1299. can enter into

  1300. his justice.

  1301. We see goodness

  1302. dying for evil,

  1303. so that when we

  1304. trust in him,

  1305. we enter into

  1306. goodness,

  1307. because he desires

  1308. to build a

  1309. people,

  1310. a kingdom,

  1311. through faith

  1312. in Christ,

  1313. that is

  1314. characterized

  1315. by the good,

  1316. the true,

  1317. the just,

  1318. and the beautiful.

  1319. people.

  1320. And it's not

  1321. just ideas,

  1322. because he

  1323. really did

  1324. die,

  1325. and he really

  1326. did rise,

  1327. and he is

  1328. really coming

  1329. again.

  1330. So it's not

  1331. just these

  1332. ideas,

  1333. but it's his

  1334. presence,

  1335. and his

  1336. power,

  1337. and an

  1338. invitation to

  1339. be a member

  1340. of his

  1341. people.

  1342. That is the

  1343. gospel.

  1344. one of the

  1345. reasons why

  1346. church is so

  1347. important,

  1348. and I just

  1349. want to

  1350. encourage you,

  1351. first of all,

  1352. I want to

  1353. encourage you,

  1354. if you haven't

  1355. given your

  1356. life to Christ,

  1357. there's no

  1358. time better

  1359. than right now

  1360. to say,

  1361. you know,

  1362. I understand

  1363. that there's

  1364. part of me

  1365. that finds

  1366. these things

  1367. a threat,

  1368. and now I

  1369. need a

  1370. Savior,

  1371. and a call

  1372. out to Jesus

  1373. to be your

  1374. Savior.

  1375. He is your

  1376. hope,

  1377. the only

  1378. hope,

  1379. and he

  1380. will move

  1381. you and me

  1382. as we

  1383. draw closer

  1384. to him,

  1385. and he

  1386. draws closer

  1387. to us,

  1388. to feel

  1389. more

  1390. uncomfortable

  1391. when we

  1392. find the

  1393. truth a

  1394. threat,

  1395. and to

  1396. want to

  1397. repent,

  1398. and more

  1399. uncomfortable

  1400. when we

  1401. find goodness

  1402. a threat,

  1403. and want

  1404. to repent,

  1405. and find

  1406. when we're

  1407. uncomfortable

  1408. by justice,

  1409. to want to

  1410. repent of

  1411. that.

  1412. He will

  1413. come into

  1414. our lives

  1415. and begin

  1416. to rebuild

  1417. you in

  1418. the context

  1419. of his

  1420. people,

  1421. into one

  1422. who,

  1423. well,

  1424. he wants

  1425. to invite

  1426. you into

  1427. his kingdom

  1428. of truth

  1429. and justice

  1430. and goodness

  1431. and beauty,

  1432. and he's

  1433. asking you

  1434. to say,

  1435. let me

  1436. in,

  1437. let me

  1438. in,

  1439. be my

  1440. Savior.

  1441. One of the

  1442. wonderful

  1443. things about

  1444. coming to

  1445. church is

  1446. the church

  1447. is not

  1448. where we

  1449. pound our

  1450. chest and

  1451. wave our

  1452. fists because

  1453. we're always

  1454. right and we

  1455. always love

  1456. the truth and

  1457. we always love

  1458. justice and we

  1459. always love

  1460. goodness.

  1461. It's time for

  1462. us to be

  1463. refreshed by

  1464. God's word

  1465. and the power

  1466. of the Holy

  1467. Spirit and

  1468. the presence

  1469. of Jesus

  1470. to win the

  1471. creed,

  1472. to say,

  1473. you know,

  1474. Lord,

  1475. this week

  1476. it's not

  1477. always been a

  1478. good week,

  1479. maybe it's

  1480. been a terrible

  1481. week,

  1482. but I once

  1483. again,

  1484. it's like the

  1485. pledge of

  1486. allegiance,

  1487. I pledge

  1488. my allegiance,

  1489. I believe

  1490. there's just

  1491. one God,

  1492. I believe in

  1493. the Father

  1494. and the Son

  1495. and the Holy

  1496. Spirit and

  1497. it's time for

  1498. us to get on

  1499. our knees

  1500. and remember

  1501. and to

  1502. recommit

  1503. ourselves in

  1504. a sense by

  1505. a covenant,

  1506. renewing the

  1507. covenant,

  1508. remembering that

  1509. Jesus said,

  1510. I'm going to

  1511. die on the

  1512. cross for you,

  1513. I'm going to

  1514. break my body

  1515. and shed my

  1516. blood for you

  1517. and I want you

  1518. to feed on me

  1519. and to remember

  1520. that it's me

  1521. who makes you

  1522. right with God

  1523. and we can

  1524. come together

  1525. in the midst of

  1526. our failures,

  1527. in the midst of

  1528. our successes

  1529. and recommit

  1530. and to know

  1531. his favor

  1532. to face

  1533. the rest of

  1534. the week

  1535. and it's so

  1536. important that

  1537. you're able to

  1538. come here and

  1539. be part of

  1540. that,

  1541. it really is,

  1542. you and I

  1543. need it

  1544. and I'm very

  1545. thankful for

  1546. this technology

  1547. and the fact

  1548. that for some

  1549. who are old

  1550. and ill

  1551. and maybe even

  1552. incarcerated

  1553. and there's no

  1554. other opportunity

  1555. and I'm really

  1556. thankful we can

  1557. do that but

  1558. there is something

  1559. about being

  1560. together.

  1561. And eating

  1562. the bread

  1563. and drinking

  1564. the wine

  1565. and hearing

  1566. the beautiful

  1567. children

  1568. and helping

  1569. with Sunday

  1570. school and

  1571. making a

  1572. difference in

  1573. people's lives

  1574. and being part

  1575. of the women's

  1576. ministry and

  1577. the men's

  1578. ministry and

  1579. small groups

  1580. and we need

  1581. each other.

  1582. We need to be

  1583. together in the

  1584. presence of

  1585. Jesus as he

  1586. builds not just

  1587. us as a person

  1588. of the truth

  1589. but a people

  1590. of the truth.

  1591. I invite you

  1592. to stand.

  1593. Please stand.

  1594. We close in

  1595. prayer.

  1596. Let's bow

  1597. our heads in

  1598. prayer.

  1599. Father, thank

  1600. you so much.

  1601. Father, thank

  1602. you so much

  1603. that you are

  1604. the truth.

  1605. You are true.

  1606. You are good.

  1607. You are just.

  1608. You are beautiful.

  1609. Father, Son, and

  1610. Holy Spirit, three

  1611. persons, one God.

  1612. Thank you, Father,

  1613. that you love us.

  1614. Thank you that you

  1615. sent Jesus to die

1616. on the cross for us.

  1617. Thank you, Father,

  1618. that you know how

  1619. conflicted we can be

  1620. about the truth

  1621. and we don't want

  1622. the truth to be

  1623. true sometimes.

  1624. We don't want

  1625. justice to be

  1626. just sometimes.

  1627. We don't want

  1628. goodness to be

  1629. good sometimes.

  1630. Father, you know

  1631. how that can be

  1632. so conflicted

  1633. within us and

  1634. you know, Father,

  1635. the ways that we

  1636. can allow those

  1637. things to grow

  1638. and grow within

  1639. us.

  1640. Father, we give

  1641. you thanks and

  1642. praise that

  1643. seen us,

  1644. still you love

  1645. us, that your

  1646. son died for us,

  1647. that we might be

  1648. made one with you.

  1649. We ask, Father,

  1650. that your Holy

  1651. Spirit would bring

  1652. your word home to

  1653. us in a deep

  1654. way and bring

  1655. the gospel home

1656. to us in a deep

  1657. way, that we

  1658. might know that

  1659. sense of security

  1660. in the gospel,

  1661. so that we might

  1662. hear texts like

  1663. this and say,

  1664. Lord, is this me?

  1665. Show me those

  1666. times it's me,

  1667. and Jesus, please

  1668. come and help me

  1669. and use your

  1670. people to help me

  1671. to repent of

  1672. that, so that

  1673. each of us can

  1674. grow more and

  1675. more day by day

  1676. as a person of

  1677. the truth, not a

  1678. person of the lie,

1679. of a person of the

  1680. good.

  1681. Not the evil, of

  1682. justice, not of

  1683. injustice.

  1684. And we ask all

  1685. these things in the

  1686. sweet and precious

  1687. name of Jesus, your

  1688. Son and our

  1689. Savior.

  1690. Amen.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. Amen.

  1698. Amen.

  1699. Amen.

  1700. Amen.

  1701. Amen.

  1702. Amen.

  1703. Amen.

  1704. Amen.

  1705. Amen.

  1706. Amen.

  1707. Amen.

  1708. Amen.

  1709. Amen.

  1710. Amen.

  1711. Amen.
