  1. For a moment, let's bow our heads in prayer.

  2. Father, it can be very lonely in life.

  3. It can be very stressful.

  4. It can be very hectic.

  5. There can be lots of anxiety in our lives.

  6. And so, Father, we give you thanks and praise

  7. that you have invited us week by week

  8. to gather with others who are your people

  9. and to come into your presence

  10. to sit and stand and sing and pray in your presence

  11. and to receive grace from you Sunday by Sunday.

  12. Father, it is a great honour and privilege

  13. that you desire us to be in your presence

  14. to receive grace from you.

  15. And we know, Father, that you bestow grace on your people

  16. as we are in your presence.

  17. And we ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit

  18. would work deeply but gently in our hearts,

  19. that we might receive the grace you desire

  20. to give us this morning

  21. and that we might respond in a worthy manner,

  22. a manner which is worthy of your glory,

  23. worthy of us,

  24. and worthy of the great needs of the world.

  25. And so, Father, we ask that you would do this gentle

  26. but deep and mysterious miracle in our hearts

  27. once again today as we gather in your presence.

  28. And we ask this in the name of Jesus,

  29. your Son and our Savior.

  30. Amen.

  31. Please be seated.

  32. So I have a trigger warning this morning.

  33. And the trigger warning is,

  34. some of you might have noticed,

  35. if you're familiar with the fact

  36. that we preach through books of the Bible

  37. and we're preaching through Mark's Gospel,

  38. an ancient biography of Jesus,

  39. Jesus talks about money.

  40. So we're going to talk about money.

  41. And that is probably one of the least popular things

  42. to talk about.

  43. And if you're here online,

  44. you're thinking,

  45. oh, good grief,

  46. they're going to talk about money.

  47. Maybe some of you are thinking about the same thing.

  48. But Jesus talks about it.

  49. And, you know, really,

  50. if you think about it for a second,

  51. for us who are followers of Jesus,

  52. the question is,

  53. what does it mean to follow Jesus

  54. in a world where there is money?

  55. And what does it mean to follow Jesus

  56. in a world where money is very, very, very, very important?

  57. What does it mean to follow Jesus

  58. in a world where money is desired

  59. and we feel anxious about it?

  60. What does it mean to follow Jesus

  61. and trust him as our Savior and Lord

  62. in such a world?

  63. And so while on one hand

  64. it might seem like a scary topic,

  65. probably some of you have heard me say it before,

  66. the thing which is so shocking about the Bible

  67. isn't that it's like a hallmark,

  68. unrealistic movie,

  69. but the problem we have with the Bible

  70. is that it's so deeply realistic

  71. that it talks about real life,

  72. it talks about suffering,

  73. and it talks about,

  74. in fact today we're not only going to talk about that,

  75. it talks about hypocrisy,

  76. it talks about climbing the greasy pole

  77. and stepping on others to climb the greasy pole,

  78. it talks about these profound things

  79. that make up our day-to-day life

  80. and we get a bit shocked,

  81. thinking we'll maybe just get

  82. a couple of little pleasing quotes

  83. to discover that it talks about

  84. what it really is like to live.

  85. So we're going to look at that

  86. because we're looking at what the Bible says,

  87. but we have to get to,

  88. there's two other little short stories

  89. that all linked

  90. that we have to look at first.

  91. So if you have your Bibles,

  92. turn in them to Mark chapter 12,

    Mark 12:35

  93. verses 35 and following,

  94. and if you're using these little booklets,

  95. it's on page 78,

  96. Mark chapter 12,

    Mark 12:35–44

  97. verses 35 to 44,

  98. and here's what is happening.

  99. And just one of the things to remember

  100. as we read this

  101. is that even though if you look at this,

  102. you have the whole book

  103. with a little study page on the side,

  104. there's still a fair amount of pages left in it,

  105. but what's happening here

  106. is just happening maybe two days

  107. before Jesus is dying on the cross.

  108. So when you're reading this,

  109. you need to keep this in mind.

  110. Jesus knows that he's going to die on the cross.

  111. He's told his disciples

  112. he's going to die on the cross

  113. and rise from the dead.

  114. They don't believe him.

  115. I don't know what they think.

  116. They think he's being metaphorical

  117. or poetical or something.

  118. Who knows?

  119. But they don't believe him.

  120. Nobody believes he's going to die on the cross.

  121. His enemies are plotting his death upon the cross

  122. and he knows he's going to rise from the dead.

  123. And so all of these words,

  124. you need to hear them remembering

  125. that that's what Jesus knows

  126. and also must be the,

  127. you know, for some of you

  128. who have really good imaginations,

  129. I'm not one of you,

  130. the emotional shock.

  131. And then even just thinking back

  132. as the disciples,

  133. they go through the shock of seeing Jesus die.

  134. They see the shock of the blood

  135. coming out of his side,

  136. the shock that he's covered in spices,

  137. the shock that he's buried in a tomb.

  138. And then the huge shock three days later

  139. when the tomb is empty

  140. and the grave cloths are there

  141. and the stone is rolled away

  142. and they can't find the body

  143. and he appears alive

  144. and they now start to think back

  145. to all of these things that he had said

  146. in the days preceding his death upon the cross

  147. and his resurrection.

  148. That's how we have to amend

  149. and enter into this

  150. imaginatively and emotionally.

  151. And if we do that,

  152. we start to see

  153. the profound beauty of the text,

  154. that the way that it,

  155. you know,

  156. those who've been Christians for a long time

  157. and the gospel becomes real to their heart,

  158. it's that there's a deep emotional satisfaction

  159. with the gospel

  160. that grows as you become more,

  161. as the gospel becomes more real to your heart

  162. because there's this deep resonance

  163. with our deep longings and yearnings

  164. and the gospel has this profound ability

  165. to form us in ways that are for our good.

  166. This, what Jesus teaches

  167. and what he does,

  168. well, let's look.

  169. So it begins in a bit of an odd way

  170. and for some people,

  171. it just seems like he's playing a bit of a word game.

  172. But look what happens first.

  173. Mark chapter 12, verse 35.

    Mark 12:35

  174. And as Jesus taught in the temple,

  175. he said,

  176. how can the scribes say that the Christ

  177. is the son of David?

  178. Now, once again,

  179. some of you might remember,

  180. what's a scribe?

  181. A scribe, if you go back in time,

  182. or sorry, if you imagine today,

  183. imagine one person

  184. or a group of people

  185. who are three different things in our society.

  186. A public intellectual,

  187. a legal scholar,

  188. and then think of somebody

  189. who's like an assistant deputy minister

  190. or a deputy minister in the government

  191. and is really competent

  192. and she just knows how things work

  193. in the government,

  194. in the real world.

  195. And so when you see scribe,

  196. think of that.

  197. Somebody who knows how the world works,

  198. how bureaucracies and systems

  199. and the culture works.

  200. Somebody who's a public intellectual

  201. and somebody who's a legal scholar.

  202. That's what a scribe is, okay?

  203. And they're experts in knowing

  204. what our Jewish friends call the Tanakh

  205. and what we would call

  206. the Old Testament in particular.

  207. And so one of the things

  208. which is interesting here

  209. is that Jesus asks a question

  210. and this is easy for us to miss

  211. the significance of this.

  212. On one hand, it's just fair.

  213. Just before this,

  214. people have been asking him hostile questions

  215. and then just immediately before this

  216. there was a friendly question.

  217. But here's the thing,

  218. if you think about it for a second,

  219. if there really is a triune God

  220. that actually does exist

  221. and if that triune God does exist

  222. and has created and sustained all things,

  223. and many here would of course

  224. believe and accept that,

  225. but for some of you that would be

  226. maybe some of you watching

  227. or some of you here,

  228. that's like,

  229. I don't know if I believe that,

  230. that's fine,

  231. but if,

  232. imagine for a second

  233. that there is really in fact

  234. the triune God

  235. who does exist,

  236. who's created everything,

  237. sustains all things,

  238. is sovereign over all things.

  239. Our mental and spiritual

  240. and emotional and aesthetic

  241. and cultural and intellectual categories

  242. couldn't grasp him.

  243. If you think about it for a second,

  244. if my,

  245. if the categories of thought

  246. in Ottawa in 2022,

  247. the aesthetic and spiritual

  248. and emotional and intellectual

  249. and philosophical

  250. and scientific categories,

  251. if our categories were adequate

  252. to completely understand

  253. such a God,

  254. that would mean we were bigger than God,

  255. which means that God doesn't exist.

  256. And so one of the things

  257. which is important

  258. when Jesus asks questions

  259. in the Gospels

  260. is you see the questions

  261. of his critics

  262. and even the questions

  263. of the seekers

  264. aren't going to be adequate

  265. to understand who he is.

  266. He needs to challenge

  267. my categories.

  268. He needs to challenge

  269. your categories.

  270. And actually,

  271. as we see just in a moment,

  272. if you think about it for a second,

  273. what he's doing

  274. is a profound challenge

  275. of our categories

  276. because in our categories,

  277. if such a God exists,

  278. we would set down criteria

  279. by which he should relate

  280. to the world.

  281. If you think about it for a second,

  282. you know,

  283. he should be inclusive.

  284. And in fact,

  285. the matter is,

  286. is no, no, no, no, no,

  287. don't do things in history.

  288. They should do things,

  289. God,

  290. you should reveal yourself

  291. at an emotional level

  292. or somewhere inside each of us

  293. in some way,

  294. which is sort of,

  295. I don't know,

  296. democratic and equitable,

  297. but it shouldn't be in history

  298. and it shouldn't be in the past

  299. and good grief,

  300. it shouldn't be a Jewish guy.

  301. I mean,

  302. what's going on with that?

  303. And we'd have all of our criteria

  304. and it should be connected,

  305. your revelation about yourself

  306. should be connected to us

  307. in such a way

  308. that it's going to help me

  309. to thrive

  310. and be the best me that I,

  311. we'd have all our criteria.

  312. And we put these criteria,

  313. see,

  314. what Jesus is doing here,

  315. he's challenging our criteria.

  316. and that has to be the case

  317. if there is in fact a God

  318. like Jesus describes.

  319. If our criteria aren't challenged,

  320. then we're God.

  321. We're God.

  322. Not only we're God,

  323. our culture is God

  324. and we can look down our noses

  325. at other cultures

  326. who have different criteria

  327. because, you know,

  328. frankly,

  329. we have the God criteria.

  330. So that's one of the subtle things

  331. which is going on

  332. in this question.

  333. All the times in the Bible

  334. that in the ancient biographies

  335. of Jesus,

  336. when Jesus asks a question

  337. and when he raises issues

  338. that we feel uncomfortable with,

  339. he's challenging our criteria,

  340. but that's exactly

  341. what should be happening

  342. if there is in fact

  343. a God that's real.

  344. So,

  345. read verse 35 again

  346. and as Jesus taught

  347. in the temple,

  348. he said,

  349. how can the scribes

  350. say that the Christ,

  351. in other words,

  352. that's one way of saying

  353. the Messiah,

  354. is the son of David

  355. and in that time period

  356. it was recognized

  357. that when the Messiah came,

  358. he would be,

  359. in a sense,

  360. in the lineage,

  361. the human lineage of David

  362. that you would be able

  363. to trace back

  364. whom his dad was

  365. or his mom was

  366. and trace them back

  367. and back and back

  368. and back

  369. and it would go

  370. all the way back,

  371. you know,

  372. dad to baby,

  373. you know,

  374. dad to baby,

  375. you know,

  376. parents to baby,

  377. all the way back to David

  378. and so that was

  379. one of his titles

  380. and so Jesus says,

  381. okay,

  382. it's accepted

  383. that he's going to be human

  384. and he's going to be

  385. in the lineage of David.

  386. We all accept that

  387. and then what he does

  388. is he says these two things.

  389. He says,

  390. verse 36,

  391. David,

  392. that's King David,

  393. himself,

  394. in the Holy Spirit

  395. declared,

  396. and now Jesus

  397. is going to quote

  398. what we now know of

  399. as Psalm 110,

    Psalms 110:1

  400. verse 1.

  401. The Lord said to my Lord,

  402. sit at my right hand

  403. until I put your enemies

  404. under your feet.

  405. Now,

  406. King David calls his son

  407. Lord,

  408. so how is he his son?

  409. And the great throng

  410. heard him gladly.

  411. Now,

  412. just a couple of things

  413. to sort of help us

  414. to understand

  415. what's going on here.

  416. There's no way in English

  417. to translate this

  418. to capture what's going on.

  419. It's just,

  420. it's impossible to translate.

  421. And that's why you need

  422. to have gatherings like this

  423. where we talk about it.

  424. The first thing here,

  425. by the way,

  426. is

  427. like,

  428. true confessions,

  429. and this isn't like coming out,

  430. but for maybe some of you

  431. who are guests

  432. or some of you online,

  433. I believe that,

  434. on one hand,

  435. I believe this is a work

  436. of accurate history,

  437. that when we read Mark,

  438. we're reading

  439. an accurate historical account

  440. of things which happened

  441. in the past.

  442. I also believe

  443. that every word

  444. which is there

  445. is the word

  446. that God wanted there.

  447. Now,

  448. I don't believe this

  449. because I'm an uneducated,

  450. narrow-minded,

  451. bigoted,

  452. modernist

  453. whose mind needs

  454. to be decolonized.

  455. Although,

  456. maybe I am

  457. all of those things.

  458. I believe it

  459. because I trust Jesus

  460. as my Savior and Lord,

  461. and that's what Jesus

  462. just taught us

  463. with his question.

  464. Did you notice

  465. what he says?

  466. Look back at verse 35.

  467. David,

  468. so he's acknowledging

  469. that David

  470. wrote Psalm 110,

    Psalms 110:1

  471. verse 1,

  472. but he also said

  473. that David wrote it

  474. in the Holy Spirit.

  475. In other words,

  476. when you read,

  477. the Lord said to my Lord,

  478. sit at my right hand

  479. until I put your enemies

  480. under your feet,

  481. you are hearing

  482. the Holy Spirit

  483. speak words

  484. to you and me.

  485. Unworthy,

  486. ungrateful,

  487. presumptuous,

  488. ignorant,

  489. sinful,

  490. foolish,

  491. all those things

  492. that we are,

  493. people who are going

  494. to die someday.

  495. This is the Holy Spirit

  496. speaking

  497. word by word.

  498. That's what Jesus

  499. is just telling us.

  500. They're the real words

  501. of David,

  502. but the Holy Spirit

  503. superintended them

  504. so that the very words

  505. that the Father,

  506. the Son,

  507. and the Holy Spirit

  508. wanted were communicated

  509. and written down to us.

  510. You see,

  511. that's one of the reasons

  512. why if you're a guest

  513. or you're watching online

  514. and you're curious,

  515. that's one of the reasons.

  516. Like,

  517. if in fact it really

  518. is the case

  519. that the triune God,

  520. the creator and sustainer

  521. of the entire universe,

  522. the one who is sovereign

  523. over the entire universe,

  524. if he really has spoken,

  525. doesn't it make sense

  526. to want to sit

  527. and listen?

  528. And that's why

  529. it's part of

  530. a worship service

  531. in a church,

  532. not only the reading

  533. of the scripture,

  534. but us trying to enter

  535. into it

  536. and meditate upon it

  537. and hear it speak

  538. directly to us.

  539. But here's the other thing

  540. which is going on

  541. in the text.

  542. In the original Hebrew,

  543. and all of,

  544. not all,

  545. but most of the hearers

  546. would have understood this

  547. when Jesus was speaking.

  548. What he says is this.

  549. Look at verse 36.

  550. He's quoting Psalm 110.

  551. The Yahweh said to my Adonai,

  552. sit at my right hand

  553. until I put your enemies

  554. under your feet.

  555. David himself calls him Adonai,

  556. so how is he his son?

  557. And the throng heard him greatly.

  558. Now Yahweh

  559. is the ancient Jewish name,

  560. a covenant name for God.

  561. He is the true God

  562. that exists

  563. that's over all things

  564. and he is the God

  565. who is in a covenant relationship.

  566. A covenant relationship

  567. is sort of like a marriage

  568. with his people.

  569. And maybe another way

  570. to put it is

  571. every one of my kids

  572. at some point in time

  573. in their life,

  574. they would call me George.

  575. And I would correct them

  576. and say there's

  577. eight billion people

  578. in the world

  579. who can call me George.

  580. There's only nine

  581. who can call me Dad.

  582. And you're one of them.

  583. So call me Dad.

  584. It's a special covenant name.

  585. And so there's all sorts of ways

  586. to talk about God

  587. and the high God,

  588. but for the Jewish people,

  589. it's Yahweh.

  590. And that became

  591. such a special name

  592. that we don't even know

  593. if we're pronouncing

  594. the name correctly now

  595. because that's a whole other

  596. long story.

  597. But the other thing is

  598. that in the Old Testament,

  599. one of the most other

  600. common names for God

  601. was Adonai.

  602. And it means most high,

  603. the most high ruler,

  604. the highest of all gods.

  605. If you went to the pagan Romans,

  606. if you went to the pagan Greeks

  607. and they believe in,

  608. I don't know,

  609. 50, 100, 200, 300 gods,

  610. and if they have a sense

  611. that there might be a high God,

  612. when a Jewish person said Adonai,

  613. they would mean

  614. above all gods,

  615. above all gods and goddesses

  616. that you think you know,

  617. above all of them is Adonai.

  618. And so that's what's going on

  619. in the text.

  620. And Jesus is just pointing out

  621. this is a really weird thing.

  622. Yahweh says to Adonai,

  623. but David also knows,

  624. we all know that the Messiah,

  625. everybody knew this was

  626. a messianic text,

  627. that the Messiah was going to come,

  628. but now, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,

  629. the Messiah is called Adonai?

  630. And how can the Messiah

  631. be both a human being

  632. and be God?

  633. And Jesus is posing

  634. a riddle to them,

  635. a riddle that he himself

  636. would show that he is

  637. the answer to the riddle,

  638. because he's ultimately

  639. referring to himself.

  640. And this is going to become

  641. very important

  642. when we talk about money

  643. and when we talk about

  644. climbing the greasy pole

  645. and stepping on people,

  646. because what Jesus is saying here,

  647. I mean, part of,

  648. why is it that I as a,

  649. I mean, there's all sorts of reasons

  650. why I as a Christian

  651. believe that Jesus,

  652. in fact, is the Messiah,

  653. that he is both fully human

  654. and fully God,

  655. but not two different beings,

  656. but one person,

  657. Jesus, the Christ,

  658. the Son of God,

  659. the second person

  660. of the Trinity,

  661. who set aside his glory

  662. and divine prerogatives

  663. and his appearance of God

  664. as God,

  665. and emptied himself

  666. and takes the form

  667. of a servant

  668. and comes

  669. and he becomes Emmanuel,

  670. he comes and lives

  671. amongst us

  672. in all of our mess,

  673. and he lives amongst us,

  674. and what Jesus

  675. is saying here,

  676. just remember,

  677. this is two days

  678. before he dies

  679. on the cross,

  680. Jesus is telling them,

  681. when you see me

  682. hanging on the cross,

  683. you are seeing Adonai

  684. hanging on the cross,

  685. that is who is dying,

  686. you are seeing the Messiah,

  687. the Christ,

  688. you are seeing God

  689. die on the cross,

  690. and that is nonsense

  691. to all human categories,

  692. the prime minister

  693. sends others

  694. to go to die in war,

  695. the king sends others

  696. to go to die in war,

  697. the prime minister,

  698. the king,

  699. are protected by others

  700. at the cost of their life,

  701. and Jesus is revealing

  702. that all of those

  703. depictions of God

  704. that fit in our categories

  705. are massively missing

  706. the God

  707. who actually does exist

  708. because the God

  709. who actually does exist

  710. isn't the God

  711. who sends others

  712. to die for his glory,

  713. but he is one

  714. who dies for others

  715. so they might be glorified.

  716. He becomes rich,

  717. that we,

  718. through his poverty,

  719. sorry,

  720. he became poor

  721. so that we,

  722. through his poverty,

  723. might become rich.

  724. We'll see how it works out

  725. in a very common human problem

  726. which is described

  727. immediately afterwards,

  728. and it's actually,

  729. as you look at these

  730. two common human problems

  731. that come right after this,

  732. you start to get a sense

  733. of the deep emotional power

  734. once you come to accept

  735. that Christ is in fact

  736. the Savior and the Lord,

  737. that the gospel is true,

  738. that there is this profound

  739. good news

  740. that God loves you so much

  741. that he himself

  742. emptied himself

  743. of all of his glory

  744. and splendor

  745. and divine prerogatives.

  746. He emptied himself

  747. of all of that

  748. and emptied himself

  749. of all of the praise

  750. which was due with him,

  751. and he left the safety

  752. and the glory of heaven

  753. to come and live amongst us

  754. and experience human life

  755. in all of its fullness,

  756. and then out of love for you,

  757. he dies in your place

  758. and in your stead.

  759. Out of love for you.

  760. This is a story of one,

  761. of two things.

  762. Your need for salvation,

  763. your potential doom

  764. is vastly worse

  765. than the worst

  766. three o'clock in the morning

  767. time you have ever had

  768. when you wake up terribly anxious.

  769. Your condition is actually

  770. vastly worse.

  771. But on the other hand,

  772. you are vastly more loved

  773. than you can possibly imagine.

  774. And that is the news

  775. of the gospel.

  776. You are vastly more loved

  777. than you can dare to dream.

  778. Look how it works out

  779. in this.

  780. This is a problem

  781. of appearances

  782. and of climbing

  783. the greasy pole

  784. and of,

  785. well, look what Jesus says,

  786. verse 38.

  787. And in his teaching,

  788. he said,

  789. beware of the scribes

  790. who like to walk around

  791. in long robes

  792. and like greetings

  793. in the marketplaces

  794. and have the best seats

  795. in the synagogue

  796. and the places of honor

  797. at feasts.

  798. And then look at this

  799. little neat little thing

  800. he puts in,

  801. who devour

  802. widows' houses

  803. and for a pretense

  804. make long prayers.

  805. And look at this.

  806. This is really

  807. a sobering thing.

  808. I mean,

  809. on one level,

  810. he's talking about

  811. the general problem of,

  812. he's talking about

  813. the general problem

  814. of hypocrisy.

  815. He's talking about

  816. the general problem

  817. that we appear

  818. to be one thing

  819. but we're actually

  820. something very different.

  821. He's talking about

  822. the problem

  823. of how we look

  824. to the rich

  825. or we look

  826. to the popular

  827. or we look

  828. to the powerful

  829. and we do things

  830. to cater their favor.

  831. We do things

  832. so that they'll like us,

  833. that the rich person

  834. will like us,

  835. that the powerful person

  836. would like us,

  837. that the influential person

  838. would like us,

  839. that if we're in business

  840. or government

  841. we look for

  842. who the cool person is,

  843. the person on the up and coming

  844. and we try to ingratiate

  845. ourselves into them

  846. and fit in with them

  847. and fit in with their circle

  848. in the hope

  849. that as they rise

  850. that we will rise with them

  851. and it's a very,

  852. very common human problem.

  853. And on one level,

  854. Jesus' words

  855. is speaking to this

  856. common human problem

  857. but he's also looking

  858. very specifically

  859. into that

  860. which is the visible church

  861. and he's making it say

  862. that it's very possible

  863. for me as a minister

  864. to start to maybe,

  865. you know,

  866. to want to just look

  867. with appearances

  868. and whatever's going

  869. to make myself

  870. more popular

  871. and maybe bring in crowds

  872. or maybe bring in more money

  873. or, you know,

  874. maybe get,

  875. you know,

  876. have more,

  877. you know,

  878. influence,

  879. have more,

  880. whatever it is,

  881. that it's easy for me

  882. to change the way I dress,

  883. the way I speak,

  884. the topics I speak on

  885. and do all of these

  886. types of things

  887. because I want to connect

  888. with the rich,

  889. the popular

  890. and the powerful

  891. and I want to move up

  892. and if I want to move up

  893. I step on those

  894. who are little people

  895. because that's the only way

  896. you move up.

  897. You can't move up

  898. to those people

  899. without stepping on little people.

  900. It's completely

  901. and utterly impossible.

  902. If you're spending

  903. all your time

  904. looking up

  905. at those people,

  906. you don't see the others

  907. that you're stepping on

  908. and we all know it

  909. and Jesus says

  910. that when it happens

  911. within the visible church,

  912. when he says

  913. the greater condemnation,

  914. he doesn't say this

  915. about LGBTQ plus activists.

  916. He doesn't say it

  917. about the people

  918. who are off

  919. just spending all their time

  920. drinking in bars.

  921. He says it about people

  922. like me

  923. and you.

  924. This is a profound

  925. warning to us.

  926. And you see,

  927. we're going to get

  928. to the good news

  929. in a moment.

  930. But you see how

  931. there's this very,

  932. very profound

  933. if in fact

  934. the news

  935. that I have just

  936. shared with you

  937. at different times

  938. throughout this sermon

  939. and the news

  940. of this

  941. that Jesus is saying

  942. all of this

  943. just before he dies

  944. on the cross.

  945. Nobody thinks

  946. he looks like God.

  947. Nobody thinks

  948. he's anybody special.

  949. He doesn't have

  950. any armies.

  951. He doesn't have

  952. a PhD.

  953. He doesn't have

  954. villas.

  955. He doesn't have

  956. sermons.

  957. He's a nobody.

  958. And he dies

  959. on a cross

  960. stripped naked

  961. not even having

  962. his clothes

  963. at the end

  964. as they embarrass him

  965. and humiliate him.

  966. The religious leaders

  967. and the cultural leaders

  968. and the political leaders

  969. and the intellectual leaders

  970. and the aesthetic leaders

  971. who want to climb

  972. the greasy ladder

  973. have stepped

  974. on him

  975. on their way

  976. up

  977. that

  978. greasy

  979. pole.

  980. He's the one

  981. stepped on

  982. on the way up.

  983. and he does it

  984. out of love

  985. for you and me.

  986. And you see

  987. if

  988. you begin

  989. to have the gospel

  990. become

  991. if you realize

  992. I can give

  993. my life to Christ

  994. it's

  995. it makes sense

  996. it's

  997. what I need

  998. it's the

  999. I need to give

  1000. my life to Christ

  1001. and it's the story

  1002. of Christ

  1003. and the good news

1004. of what he has done

  1005. for us

  1006. as that starts

  1007. to become more real

  1008. to us

  1009. at a deep level

  1010. it forms us

1011. not to be a person

1012. who is going to be

  1013. one thing in public

  1014. and another thing

  1015. in private

1016. who's going to be one

  1017. who's never looking

  1018. at the little people

  1019. and we don't care

1020. if we step on them

  1021. it's going to create

  1022. within us

  1023. a very different thing

  1024. because our

  1025. our imagination

  1026. and our heart

  1027. is captivated

  1028. by the picture

  1029. and the truth

  1030. of God

  1031. setting aside

  1032. his glory

  1033. and divine prerogatives

  1034. and entering

  1035. into our human existence

  1036. entering into the existence

  1037. of the little people

  1038. the forgotten people

  1039. that they might loved

  1040. and lovely be

1041. at a very very deep level

1042. it starts to form us

  1043. in a very different

  1044. way of living

  1045. but it's exactly

  1046. the way of living

  1047. that most Canadians want

  1048. we do not want

  1049. to be separate people

  1050. and for most people

1051. we might brush it off

  1052. if somebody

  1053. if you confronted somebody

  1054. about how they've

  1055. stepped on this person

  1056. and this person

  1057. and this person

  1058. up to the top

  1059. and you confronted

  1060. them about it

  1061. and they might

1062. they might rail at you

  1063. and stuff like that

  1064. but inwardly

  1065. they would either rage

  1066. or be ashamed

  1067. because nobody

1068. wants to be that guy

  1069. nobody wants to be

  1070. that gal

1071. and what we see here

1072. is at a very very

  1073. very deep level

  1074. Jesus is forming us

  1075. for something

  1076. that on one level

  1077. we deeply

  1078. deeply deeply

  1079. desire to be

  1080. when we accept

  1081. the gospel

  1082. it's in that context

  1083. that he talks

  1084. about money

  1085. now just before

  1086. I read this

  1087. I'm going to have

  1088. my standard caveat

  1089. if you're here today

  1090. and you don't know

  1091. what you think

  1092. about Jesus

  1093. you're not sure

  1094. whether you

  1095. believe in him

  1096. or want to belong

  1097. to him

  1098. maybe you're thinking

  1099. you're going to leave

  1100. maybe you're trying

  1101. to figure out

  1102. what to do

  1103. if you're watching

  1104. online

  1105. and you're just curious

  1106. so I love

  1107. what

  1108. before you hear

  1109. anything else

  1110. just listen to

1111. what he has to say

1112. but I want to make

  1113. you aware

  1114. of the fact

  1115. that the council

  1116. and myself

  1117. would like it

  1118. if that describes

  1119. you

  1120. you haven't given

  1121. your life to Christ

  1122. we don't want you

1123. to give us any money

  1124. like really

  1125. literally

  1126. we don't want you

1127. to give us any money

  1128. because it's not

  1129. about money

  1130. it's about

  1131. figuring out

  1132. whether Jesus

  1133. is in fact

  1134. the one

  1135. who can reconcile

  1136. you to the

  1137. triune God

  1138. the creator

  1139. and sustainer

  1140. of all things

  1141. and that's the

  1142. great existential

  1143. question

  1144. and money

  1145. is completely

  1146. and utterly

  1147. irrelevant

  1148. and

  1149. and I'll explain

  1150. in a moment

  1151. why Jesus

  1152. says what he says

  1153. and why it matters

  1154. to us

  1155. once we're

  1156. following him

  1157. but if you

  1158. haven't decided

  1159. to follow him

  1160. yet

  1161. we don't want

  1162. your money

  1163. not about money

  1164. it really isn't

  1165. what does Jesus

  1166. say

  1167. and this is a

  1168. very scary thing

  1169. it touches on

  1170. our deep fears

  1171. about Christ

  1172. and money

  1173. verse 41

  1174. and he sat down

  1175. opposite the treasury

  1176. and watched the people

  1177. putting money

  1178. into the offering

  1179. box

  1180. many rich people

  1181. put in large sums

  1182. and a poor widow

1183. came in and put in

  1184. two small copper coins

  1185. which make a penny

  1186. now that's a very

  1187. inadequate translation

  1188. and there's not really

  1189. any good way

  1190. to make an English

  1191. translation

  1192. unless if you had

  1193. a study bible

  1194. or something

  1195. there might be

  1196. a footnote there

  1197. I looked up

  1198. the average

  1199. Canadian salary

  1200. and so basically

  1201. what you understand

  1202. is imagine

  1203. that in Canadian

  1204. society

  1205. and I've known

  1206. people who've

  1207. had to

  1208. had their money

  1209. managed for them

  1210. and so every day

  1211. they have a couple

  1212. of dollars

  1213. or whatever the

  1214. amount is in the

  1215. bank

  1216. and five days a

  1217. week they get

  1218. money available

  1219. to them

  1220. and in Canadian

  1221. in our current

  1222. current day

  1223. this is somebody

  1224. who every day

  1225. from Monday to

  1226. Friday gets

  1227. two toonies

  1228. that's what it

  1229. means for Canadians

  1230. two toonies

  1231. four bucks

  1232. Monday

  1233. Tuesday

  1234. Wednesday

  1235. Thursday

  1236. Friday

  1237. they go to

  1238. wherever the

  1239. social service

  1240. center

  1241. hand them

  1242. two toonies

  1243. and that's

  1244. what she has

  1245. to live on

  1246. and she

  1247. puts both

  1248. of them

  1249. aside for the

  1250. glory of God

  1251. now

  1252. and then

  1253. Jesus says

  1254. this

  1255. verse 43

  1256. and he

  1257. calls his

  1258. disciples

  1259. to him

  1260. and said

  1261. to them

  1262. truly I

  1263. say to

  1264. you

  1265. this

  1266. poor

  1267. widow

  1268. has put

  1269. in more

  1270. than all

  1271. those

  1272. who are

  1273. contributing

  1274. to the

  1275. offering

  1276. box

  1277. for they

  1278. all

  1279. contributed

  1280. out of

  1281. their

  1282. abundance

  1283. but she

  1284. out of

  1285. her

  1286. poverty

  1287. has put

  1288. in

  1289. everything

  1290. she

  1291. had

  1292. all

  1293. she

  1294. had

  1295. to

  1296. live

  1297. on

  1298. be a

  1299. little

  1300. bit

  1301. as if

  1302. Bill

  1303. Gates

  1304. came

  1305. to

  1306. visit

  1307. us

  1308. and by

  1309. the

  1310. way

  1311. Bill

  1312. if

  1313. you're

  1314. watching

  1315. you're

  1316. always

  1317. welcome

  1318. but he

  1319. comes

  1320. and after

  1321. the

  1322. sermon

  1323. he

  1324. you know

  1325. ignores

  1326. what I've

  1327. said

  1328. about not

  1329. giving us

  1330. money

  1331. and he

  1332. writes us

  1333. a check

  1334. for

  1335. $25,000

  1336. I don't

  1337. know how many

  1338. billions he has

  1339. left over

  1340. but he has

  1341. lots

  1342. of billions

  1343. left over

  1344. after $25,000

  1345. my guess is

  1346. most of you

  1347. here

  1348. couldn't drop

  1349. a check

  1350. for $25,000

  1351. very easily

  1352. maybe a couple

  1353. of you could

  1354. but

  1355. here's the

  1356. deep fear

  1357. we have

  1358. with the

  1359. text

  1360. if we're

  1361. honest

  1362. with it

  1363. what is

  1364. Jesus

  1365. doing

  1366. here

  1367. George

  1368. don't

  1369. you

  1370. think

  1371. this

  1372. woman

  1373. was

  1374. foolish

  1375. George

  1376. don't

  1377. you

  1378. think

  1379. does

  1380. God

  1381. just

  1382. want

  1383. us

  1384. to be

  1385. poor

  1386. George

  1387. I

  1388. would

  1389. like

  1390. to

  1391. be

  1392. able

  1393. to

  1394. own

  1395. a

  1396. condo

  1397. or

  1398. a

  1399. house

  1400. someday

  1401. I

  1402. want

  1403. to

  1404. make

  1405. some

  1406. money

  1407. so

  1408. I

  1409. can

  1410. just

  1411. like

  1412. I

  1413. don't

  1414. want

  1415. to

  1416. have

  1417. a

  1418. McMansion

  1419. I

  1420. would

  1421. just

  1422. like

  1423. to

  1424. be

  1425. able

  1426. to

  1427. have

  1428. a

  1429. house

  1430. of

  1431. my

  1432. own

  1433. and yet

  1434. Jesus

  1435. seems

  1436. to be

  1437. talking

  1438. here

  1439. in a

  1440. particular

  1441. way

  1442. as if

  1443. what

  1444. he

  1445. wants

  1446. is

  1447. that

  1448. the

  1449. best

  1450. thing

  1451. I

  1452. could

  1453. possibly

  1454. be

  1455. is

  1456. a

  1457. poor

  1458. widow

  1459. giving

  1460. all

  1461. of

  1462. my

  1463. money

  1464. until

  1465. I

  1466. starve

  1467. to

  1468. death

  1469. like

  1470. George

  1471. this

  1472. just

  1473. seems

  1474. to be

  1475. completely

  1476. kooky

  1477. doesn't

  1478. he

  1479. know

  1480. what

  1481. it's

  1482. like

  1483. to

  1484. be

  1485. human

  1486. doesn't

  1487. he

  1488. know

  1489. what

  1490. it's

  1491. like

  1492. to

  1493. have

  1494. to

  1495. worry

  1496. about

  1497. money

  1498. doesn't

  1499. he

  1500. know

  1501. the

  1502. answer

  1503. is

  1504. he

  1505. does

  1506. know

  1507. all

  1508. of

  1509. those

  1510. things

  1511. he

  1512. does

  1513. know

  1514. all

  1515. of

  1516. those

  1517. things

  1518. and

  1519. if

  1520. we

  1521. just

  1522. listen

  1523. to

  1524. our

  1525. heart

  1526. for

  1527. a

  1528. second

  1529. why

  1530. is

  1531. it

  1532. that

  1533. it

  1534. would

  1535. be

  1536. like

  1537. a

  1538. dagger

  1539. in

  1540. our

  1541. heart

  1542. if

  1543. all

  1544. of

  1545. a

  1546. sudden

  1547. I

  1548. don't

  1549. know

  1550. God

  1551. showed

  1552. up

  1553. just

  1554. in

  1555. front

  1556. of

  1557. us

  1558. and

  1559. said

  1560. I

  1561. need

  1562. you

  1563. to

  1564. write

  1565. a

  1566. check

  1567. for

  1568. $3,000

  1569. and

  1570. for

  1571. almost

  1572. every

  1573. single

  1574. one

  1575. of

  1576. us

  1577. here

  1578. that

  1579. would

  1580. be

  1581. like

  1582. that's

  1583. not

  1584. all

  1585. your

  1586. money

  1587. in

  1588. most

  1589. cases

  1590. here

  1591. probably

  1592. but

  1593. why

  1594. is

  1595. it

  1596. that

  1597. we

  1598. get

  1599. so

  1600. anxious

  1601. around

  1602. money

  1603. and

  1604. why

  1605. is

  1606. it

  1607. that

  1608. we

  1609. hate

  1610. being

  1611. anxious

  1612. around

  1613. money

  1614. yet

  1615. we

  1616. are

  1617. anxious

  1618. around

  1619. money

  1620. and

  1621. you

  1622. know

  1623. if

  1624. you

  1625. think

  1626. about

  1627. it

  1628. for

  1629. a

  1630. second

  1631. if

  1632. you're

  1633. anxious

  1634. around

  1635. money

  1636. and

  1637. you're

  1638. having

  1639. problems

  1640. with

  1641. money

  1642. doesn't

  1643. that

  1644. usually

  1645. indicate

  1646. that

  1647. you

  1648. need

  1649. someone

  1650. who

  1651. loves

  1652. you

  1653. so

  1654. much

  1655. that

  1656. he

  1657. died

  1658. for

  1659. you

  1660. that

  1661. maybe

  1662. you

  1663. need

  1664. his

  1665. help

  1666. with

  1667. your

  1668. money

  1669. it's

  1670. not

  1671. that

  1672. he

  1673. wants

  1674. us

  1675. to

  1676. be

  1677. poor

  1678. first

  1679. of

  1680. all

  1681. Jesus

  1682. is

  1683. pointing

  1684. to

  1685. what

  1686. he's

  1687. about

  1688. to

  1689. do

  1690. on

  1691. the

  1692. cross

  1693. Flannery

  1694. O'Connor

  1695. wrote

  1696. a book

  1697. back

  1698. in the

  1699. 50s

  1700. and

  1701. one

  1702. of

  1703. her

  1704. lines

  1705. in it

  1706. which

  1707. I

  1708. love

  1709. is

  1710. that

  1711. you

  1712. can't

  1713. be

  1714. poorer

  1715. than

  1716. dead

  1717. you

  1718. can't

  1719. be

  1720. poorer

  1721. than

  1722. dead

  1723. and

  1724. Jesus

  1725. literally

  1726. does

  1727. he

  1728. is

  1729. the

  1730. true

  1731. and

  1732. greater

  1733. widow

  1734. he

  1735. literally

  1736. truly

  1737. gives

  1738. all

  1739. that

  1740. he

  1741. has

  1742. there's

  1743. a

  1744. very

  1745. wonderful

  1746. quote

  1747. I'm

  1748. sure

  1749. St.

  1750. Paul

  1751. was

  1752. thinking

  1753. about

  1754. this

  1755. story

  1756. when

  1757. he

  1758. wrote

  1759. this

  1760. wonderful

  1761. quote

  1762. it's

  1763. not

  1764. going

  1765. to

  1766. be

  1767. up

  1768. on

  1769. your

  1770. screen

  1771. you

  1772. just

  1773. have

  1774. to

  1775. listen

  1776. to

  1777. it

  1778. it's

  1779. 2nd

  1780. Corinthians

  1781. chapter

  1782. 8

  1783. verses

  1784. 9

  1785. and

  1786. 10

  1787. and

  1788. it

  1789. says

  1790. this

  1791. for

  1792. you

  1793. know

  1794. the

  1795. for

  1796. your

  1797. sake

  1798. he

  1799. became

  1800. poor

  1801. so

  1802. that

  1803. you

  1804. by

  1805. his

  1806. poverty

  1807. might

  1808. become

  1809. rich

  1810. you

  1811. know

  1812. if

  1813. you

  1814. think

  1815. about

  1816. it

  1817. for

  1818. a

  1819. second

  1820. there's

  1821. no

  1822. free

  1823. lunch

  1824. about

  1825. 15

  1826. years

  1827. ago

  1828. there

  1829. was

  1830. a

  1831. very

  1832. wealthy

  1833. man

  1834. in

  1835. the

  1836. congregation

  1837. and

  1838. he

  1839. invited

  1840. me

  1841. out

  1842. and

  1843. Louise

  1844. out

  1845. to

  1846. a

  1847. $500

  1848. a plate

  1849. banquet

  1850. this

  1851. is

  1852. 15

  1853. years

  1854. ago

  1855. I

  1856. don't

  1857. know

  1858. what

  1859. that

  1860. would

  1861. be

  1862. today

  1863. with

  1864. inflation

  1865. a

  1866. $1,500

  1867. $2,000

  1868. a plate

  1869. banquet

  1870. and he

  1871. invited

  1872. us

  1873. to it

  1874. and of

  1875. course

  1876. Louise

  1877. said

  1878. oh yeah

  1879. we have

  1880. like an

  1881. extra

  1882. $2,000

  1883. each

  1884. in our

  1885. pockets

  1886. we'll

  1887. buy

  1888. no

  1889. we

  1890. said

  1891. we

  1892. can't

  1893. afford

  1894. it

  1895. I

  1896. said

  1897. no

  1898. no

  1899. it's

  1900. on us

  1901. it's

  1902. on me

  1903. it's

  1904. on me

  1905. you're

  1906. my

  1907. guest

  1908. now

  1909. did

  1910. I

  1911. get

  1912. a

  1913. free

  1914. meal

  1915. yeah

  1916. was

  1917. the

  1918. meal

  1919. free

  1920. no

  1921. for

  1922. Tom

  1923. to

  1924. take

  1925. us

  1926. out

  1927. to

  1928. that

  1929. meal

  1930. in

  1931. today's

  1932. dollars

  1933. he

  1934. was

  1935. out

  1936. four

  1937. grand

  1938. somebody

  1939. had

  1940. to

  1941. pay

  1942. and

  1943. what

  1944. Jesus

  1945. is

  1946. saying

  1947. here

  1948. is

  1949. that

  1950. he

  1951. is

  1952. going

  1953. to

  1954. pour

  1955. himself

  1956. out

  1957. he

  1958. is

  1959. pouring

  1960. himself

  1961. he

  1962. is

  1963. becoming

  1964. completely

  1965. and utterly

  1966. poor

  1967. and he's

  1968. becoming

  1969. poor

  1970. so he

  1971. will pay

  1972. the cost

  1973. that you

  1974. cannot

  1975. pay

  1976. he

  1977. will

  1978. pay

  1979. to

  1980. cover

  1981. that

  1982. heavenly

  1983. banquet

  1984. and that

  1985. time

  1986. of

  1987. eternity

  1988. that

  1989. you

  1990. cannot

  1991. possibly

  1992. ever

  1993. imaginatively

  1994. pay

  1995. and he

  1996. will

  1997. pay

  1998. it

  1999. all

  2000. and he

  2001. does

  2002. it

  2003. all

  2004. for

  2005. you

  2006. out

  2007. of

  2008. love

  2009. for

  2010. you

  2011. and

  2012. it's

  2013. not

  2014. that

  2015. these

  2016. things

  2017. are

  2018. free

  2019. they

  2020. come

  2021. at

  2022. a

  2023. cost

  2024. but

  2025. he

  2026. bears

  2027. the

  2028. cost

  2029. not

  2030. you

  2031. he

  2032. offers

  2033. it

  2034. to

  2035. you

  2036. completely

  2037. and utterly

  2038. out

  2039. of

  2040. grace

  2041. and

  2042. out

  2043. of

  2044. love

  2045. and

  2046. so

  2047. when

  2048. we

  2049. see

  2050. Jesus

  2051. dying

  2052. on

  2053. the

  2054. cross

  2055. we

  2056. see

  2057. him

  2058. dying

  2059. on

  2060. the

  2061. cross

  2062. to

  2063. pay

  2064. that

  2065. price

  2066. that

  2067. we

  2068. cannot

  2069. says

  2070. he

  2071. pays

  2072. it

  2073. for

  2074. the

  2075. hypocrites

  2076. he

  2077. pays

  2078. it

  2079. for

  2080. the

  2081. people

  2082. who

  2083. climb

  2084. the

  2085. greasy

  2086. pole

  2087. he

  2088. pays

  2089. it

  2090. for

  2091. the

  2092. people

  2093. who

  2094. are

  2095. squashed

  2096. by

  2097. the

  2098. greasy

  2099. pole

  2100. he

  2101. pays

  2102. it

  2103. for

  2104. the

  2105. indifferent

  2106. rich

  2107. he

  2108. pays

  2109. it

  2110. for

  2111. the

  2112. poor

  2113. widows

  2114. he

  2115. pays

  2116. it

  2117. for

  2118. you

  2119. and

  2120. me

  2121. that's

  2122. who

  2123. he

  2124. pays

  2125. it

  2126. for

  2127. for

  2128. you

  2129. and

  2130. me

  2131. this

  2132. is

  2133. not

  2134. a

  2135. text

  2136. to

  2137. condemn

  2138. us

  2139. but

  2140. to

  2141. show

  2142. us

  2143. our

  2144. need

  2145. for

  2146. a

  2147. savior

  2148. and

  2149. here's

  2150. the

  2151. thing

  2152. how

  2153. can

  2154. I

  2155. say

  2156. that

  2157. I

  2158. follow

  2159. the

  2160. one

  2161. who

  2162. is

  2163. meek

  2164. and

  2165. lowly

  2166. if

  2167. I

  2168. am

  2169. arrogant

  2170. shouldn't

  2171. it

  2172. mean

  2173. that

  2174. if

  2175. my

  2176. heart

  2177. is

  2178. set

  2179. on

  2180. the

  2181. one

  2182. who

  2183. in

  2184. meekness

  2185. and

  2186. lowliness

  2187. died

  2188. for

  2189. me

  2190. that

  2191. I

  2192. should

  2193. learn

  2194. to

  2195. be

  2196. meek

  2197. and

  2198. lowly

  2199. how

  2200. can

  2201. I

  2202. say

  2203. that

  2204. I

  2205. follow

  2206. the

  2207. man

  2208. who

  2209. shunned

  2210. appearances

  2211. to

  2212. really

  2213. deal

  2214. with

  2215. reality

  2216. if

  2217. I

  2218. in

  2219. my

  2220. life

  2221. only

  2222. want

  2223. to

  2224. deal

  2225. with

  2226. appearances

  2227. and

  2228. not

  2229. reality

  2230. shouldn't

  2231. that

  2232. wonderful

  2233. tale

  2234. that

  2235. he

  2236. in

  2237. reality

  2238. deals

  2239. even

  2240. if

  2241. the

  2242. appearances

  2243. don't

  2244. seem

  2245. to

  2246. match

  2247. up

  2248. shouldn't

  2249. that

  2250. form

  2251. within

  2252. me

  2253. this

  2254. deep

  2255. desire

  2256. for

  2257. integrity

  2258. and

  2259. how

  2260. can

  2261. I

  2262. say

  2263. I

  2264. follow

  2265. the

  2266. God

  2267. who

  2268. gave

  2269. him

  2270. his

  2271. all

  2272. if

  2273. I

  2274. give

  2275. nothing

  2276. how

  2277. does

  2278. that

  2279. make

  2280. any

  2281. sense

  2282. to say

  2283. that I

  2284. am being

  2285. saved by

  2286. the one

  2287. who has

  2288. given it

  2289. all if

  2290. I give

  2291. nothing

  2292. I'm

  2293. not

  2294. we're

  2295. going to

  2296. say this

  2297. right now

  2298. just so

  2299. it's

  2300. very

  2301. out

  2302. front

  2303. by

  2304. those

  2305. of you

  2306. who know

  2307. me

  2308. know

  2309. that I

  2310. am

  2311. not

  2312. even

  2313. remotely

  2314. organized

  2315. enough

  2316. to

  2317. orchestrate

  2318. anything

  2319. like

  2320. this

  2321. like

  2322. you

  2323. know

  2324. me

  2325. I

  2326. used

  2327. to

  2328. say

  2329. regularly

  2330. people

  2331. who

  2332. don't

  2333. like

  2334. organized

  2335. religion

  2336. should

  2337. come

  2338. to

  2339. my

  2340. church

  2341. because

  2342. we have

  2343. disorganized

  2344. religion

  2345. lots of

  2346. times

  2347. but

  2348. I was

  2349. going to

  2350. in the

  2351. announcements

  2352. announce

  2353. that those

  2354. of you

  2355. who call

  2356. this your

  2357. church home

  2358. just so

  2359. you know

  2360. that as

  2361. of the

  2362. end of

  2363. last

  2364. Sunday

  2365. we needed

  2366. $58,000

  2367. to balance

  2368. our books

  2369. I didn't

  2370. preach this

  2371. sermon

  2372. because of

  2373. that

  2374. complete and

  2375. utter coincidence

  2376. really is

  2377. or providence

  2378. I didn't plan

  2379. it that way

  2380. and I'm not

  2381. preaching this

  2382. sermon because

  2383. we have a need

  2384. for $58,000

  2385. to balance

  2386. our books

  2387. I present

  2388. that to

  2389. you for

  2390. this is

  2391. your

  2392. church

  2393. home

  2394. whether

  2395. you're

  2396. online

  2397. or here

  2398. and not

  2399. everybody

  2400. can give

  2401. that much

  2402. money

  2403. but everybody

  2404. can pray

  2405. and pray

  2406. that we

  2407. as a church

  2408. are always

  2409. seeking to

  2410. know God

  2411. to do

  2412. his will

  2413. to bring

  2414. him glory

  2415. to make

  2416. a difference

  2417. in the

  2418. world

  2419. for him

  2420. trusting

  2421. that he

  2422. will supply

  2423. the issue

  2424. isn't about

  2425. that the

  2426. issue here

  2427. is about

  2428. how can

  2429. you follow

  2430. the God

  2431. who gave

  2432. himself

  2433. for you

  2434. if you

  2435. never

  2436. give

  2437. the Bible

  2438. gives you

  2439. a very

  2440. very rough

  2441. estimate of

  2442. how to

  2443. handle that

  2444. generosity

  2445. and what

  2446. it is

  2447. and it's

  2448. called a

  2449. tithe

  2450. it's 10%

  2451. of your

  2452. income

  2453. which is

  2454. a shock

  2455. and when

  2456. Louise and

  2457. I began

  2458. to move

  2459. towards

  2460. tithing

  2461. we didn't

  2462. do it

  2463. by just

  2464. instantly

  2465. doing

  2466. because we

  2467. were

  2468. scaredy

  2469. cats

  2470. or I

  2471. was probably

  2472. more of a

  2473. scaredy

  2474. cat

  2475. Louise is

  2476. less of a

  2477. scaredy

  2478. cat

  2479. than I

  2480. am

  2481. and but

  2482. we moved

  2483. to that

  2484. point where

  2485. we would

  2486. give 10%

  2487. of our

  2488. income

  2489. to the

  2490. local

  2491. church

  2492. and to

  2493. others

  2494. for the

  2495. furtherance

  2496. of the

  2497. gospel

  2498. and that's

  2499. just a

  2500. very simple

  2501. rule of

  2502. thumb

  2503. to understand

  2504. what it

  2505. means to

  2506. follow the

  2507. one whose

  2508. gave is

  2509. all for

  2510. you

  2511. and that

  2512. means you

  2513. are going

  2514. to be

  2515. formed to

  2516. be one

  2517. who gives

  2518. and once

  2519. again that's

  2520. the answer

  2521. to our

  2522. longings and

  2523. our yearnings

  2524. nobody at

  2525. their funeral

  2526. if you could

  2527. go over here

  2528. what people

  2529. said nobody

  2530. would want

  2531. at their

  2532. funeral to

  2533. say you

  2534. know the

  2535. problem with

  2536. George is he

  2537. was really

  2538. cheap

  2539. the problem

  2540. with George

  2541. is he was

  2542. really miserly

  2543. the problem

  2544. with George

  2545. is he was

  2546. unbelievably

  2547. ungenerous

  2548. if I was

  2549. to hear that

  2550. I would be

  2551. crushed

  2552. what would

  2553. we like

  2554. people to

  2555. say

  2556. we'd like

  2557. to hear

  2558. people say

  2559. you know

  2560. the problem

  2561. with George

  2562. is he was

  2563. too generous

  2564. the problem

  2565. is that

  2566. you know

  2567. Sue is

  2568. too giving

  2569. the problem

  2570. with Bob

  2571. is they

  2572. just

  2573. he's so

  2574. giving

  2575. it's almost

  2576. like a

  2577. problem

  2578. wouldn't

  2579. that be

  2580. the error

  2581. we'd like

  2582. to have

  2583. to be

  2584. known for

  2585. let's

  2586. stand

  2587. and bow

  2588. our heads

  2589. in prayer

  2590. and if

  2591. you're here

  2592. or you're

  2593. watching

  2594. online

  2595. and if

  2596. you'd like

  2597. to know

  2598. more about

  2599. Jesus

  2600. let us

  2601. know

  2602. we'd love

  2603. to connect

  2604. you with

  2605. some people

  2606. who could

  2607. just walk

  2608. with you

  2609. as you

  2610. maybe look

  2611. at one

  2612. of the

  2613. gospels

  2614. Mark

  2615. or John

  2616. and talk

  2617. it through

  2618. so you

  2619. get to

  2620. know

  2621. him

  2622. and

  2623. maybe

  2624. it is

  2625. that you've

  2626. never really

  2627. considered

  2628. Christ

  2629. but now

  2630. you feel

  2631. maybe

  2632. that you

  2633. should

  2634. become

  2635. his child

  2636. by adoption

  2637. and grace

  2638. there's

  2639. no better

  2640. time

  2641. than now

  2642. than just

  2643. to stop

  2644. listening to

  2645. me

  2646. and say

  2647. Jesus

  2648. please

  2649. I need

  2650. you to

  2651. be my

  2652. savior

  2653. and Lord

  2654. please

  2655. take me

  2656. and if

  2657. you say

  2658. that

  2659. with your

  2660. heart

  2661. he will

  2662. never

  2663. turn you

  2664. away

  2665. he will

  2666. take you

  2667. as his

  2668. own

  2669. and for

  2670. all of us

  2671. let's

  2672. pray

  2673. father

  2674. you know

  2675. how anxious

  2676. we are

  2677. about money

  2678. you know

  2679. how anxious

  2680. we are

  2681. about appearances

  2682. you know

  2683. how anxious

  2684. we are

  2685. about our

  2686. health

  2687. and how

  2688. anxious

  2689. we can

  2690. get about

  2691. our future

  2692. you know

  2693. how anxious

  2694. we can be

  2695. about relationships

  2696. you know

  2697. you know

  2698. you know

  2699. how anxious

  2700. we can be

  2701. about having

  2702. our needs

  2703. met

  2704. and father

  2705. we know

  2706. that you

  2707. you know

  2708. these things

  2709. about us

  2710. and still

  2711. you love

  2712. us

  2713. and you

  2714. have

  2715. invited us

  2716. to be

  2717. your children

  2718. by adoption

  2719. and grace

  2720. you have

  2721. provided

  2722. a wonderful

  2723. savior

  2724. for us

  2725. who loves

  2726. us

  2727. loved us

  2728. to the

  2729. point of

  2730. death

  2731. and rose

  2732. from the

  2733. dead

  2734. and has

  2735. come into

  2736. our lives

  2737. and this

  2738. is your

  2739. world

  2740. you are

  2741. our father

  2742. in heaven

  2743. and we

  2744. give you

  2745. thanks

  2746. and praise

  2747. that you

  2748. know us

  2749. and that we

  2750. can pour

  2751. out our

  2752. hearts

  2753. to you

  2754. about the

  2755. things that

  2756. make us

  2757. worried

  2758. and afraid

  2759. and the

  2760. things that

  2761. we feel

  2762. guilty about

  2763. and that

  2764. everything

  2765. about you

  2766. all you know

  2767. all of these

  2768. things and

  2769. you and you

  2770. knowing them

  2771. all you still

  2772. sent jesus

  2773. to die on

  2774. the cross

  2775. for us

  2776. because you

  2777. love us

  2778. and so we

  2779. thank and

  2780. praise you

  2781. help us

  2782. father to

  2783. make the

  2784. gospel so

  2785. real to

  2786. our hearts

  2787. that we

  2788. can be

  2789. more and

  2790. more honest

  2791. to you

  2792. and pour

  2793. out our

  2794. hearts

  2795. to you

  2796. and that

  2797. we can

  2798. pour out

  2799. our hearts

  2800. to your

  2801. people

  2802. and with

  2803. one another

  2804. and feel

  2805. through their

  2806. arms and

  2807. their prayers

  2808. your love

  2809. and concern

  2810. for us

  2811. and lord we

  2812. ask that you

  2813. help us to

  2814. be people

  2815. of integrity

  2816. to put

  2817. aside the

  2818. appearances

  2819. that so

  2820. beguile us

  2821. to help us

  2822. to put aside

  2823. trying to

  2824. step on

  2825. others in

  2826. our pursuit

  2827. of the

  2828. popular

  2829. the powerful

  2830. the influential

  2831. as we try

  2832. to climb

  2833. the greasy

  2834. pole

  2835. and father

  2836. help us

  2837. to be so

  2838. enamored

  2839. and in

  2840. love with

  2841. the gospel

  2842. that we

  2843. like him

  2844. might become

  2845. people who

  2846. are people

  2847. of giving

  2848. and generosity

  2849. and you know

  2850. how hard it

  2851. is we ask

  2852. that you

  2853. help us

  2854. to trust

  2855. you that

  2856. you will

  2857. only walk

  2858. with us

  2859. through the

  2860. world of

  2861. appearances

  2862. and money

  2863. and all

  2864. those other

  2865. things in

  2866. hypocrisy

  2867. that you

  2868. will walk

  2869. with us

  2870. in a way

  2871. that leads

  2872. to our

  2873. freedom

  2874. and our

  2875. wholeness

  2876. and our

  2877. integrity

  2878. and our

  2879. beauty

  2880. and our

  2881. loveliness

  2882. because

  2883. you died

  2884. for the

  2885. loveless

  2886. that loved

  2887. and lovely

  2888. we might

  2889. be

  2890. please make

  2891. the gospel

  2892. more real

  2893. to our

  2894. heart

  2895. we ask

  2896. this in

  2897. the name

  2898. of Jesus

  2899. your son

  2900. and our

  2901. savior

  2902. and all

  2903. God's

  2904. people said

  2905. amen
