  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. Our scripture reading for today is from the book of Matthew, chapter 27 and 28.

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  3. Starting in verse 62, we read,

  4. The next day, that is after the day of preparation,

  5. the chief priests and the parrises gathered before Pilate and said,

  6. Sir, we remember how that imposter said while he was still alive.

  7. After three days I will rise.

  8. Therefore, order the tomb to be made secure until the third day.

  9. Lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people,

  10. He has risen from the dead, and the last fraud will be worse than the first.

  11. Pilate said to them,

  12. You have a guard of soldiers. Go. Make it secure as you can.

  13. So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

  14. Now, after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week,

  15. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

  16. And behold, there was a great earthquake,

  17. for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven

  18. and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  19. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.

  20. And for fear of him, the guards trembled and became like dead men.

  21. But the angel said to the woman,

  22. Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

  23. He is not here, for he has risen.

  24. And he said, Come, see the place where he lay.

  25. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead.

  26. And behold, he is going before you to Galilee.

  27. There you will see him.

  28. See, I have told you.

  29. So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy

  30. and ran to tell his disciples.

  31. And behold, Jesus met them and said, Greetings.

  32. And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.

  33. Then Jesus said to them,

  34. Do not be afraid.

  35. Go and tell my brothers to go to the Galilee,

  36. and there they will see me.

  37. While they were going, behold,

  38. some of the guard went into the city

  39. and told the chief priests all that had taken place.

  40. And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel,

  41. they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers and said,

  42. Tell people his disciples came by night

  43. and stole him away while we were asleep.

  44. And if this comes to the governor's ears,

  45. we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.

  46. So they took the money and did as they were directed.

  47. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

  48. This is the word of God.

  49. Great.

  50. Thank you, Riza.

  51. Good morning, everybody.

  52. Great to see if you're new to Watermark.

  53. My name is Kevin.

  54. And great to have you with us this morning.

  55. Before we start, great to see so many guests and visitors.

  56. Welcome.

  57. Lovely to have you with us.

  58. Also great to see Andrew and Akasha with little Ezekiel back.

  59. Ezekiel's two months old.

  60. And great to have you guys back, part of the family.

  61. And also great to have Sarah.

  62. Sarah was a Watermark many years ago,

  63. nine, ten years ago.

  64. Moved to Singapore and back visiting.

  65. Great to have you with us today, Sarah.

  66. Let's pray as we consider this scripture together.

  67. Won't you join me as we pray together?

  68. Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit,

  69. we celebrate in the fullest sense of the word,

  70. the wonder of Easter.

  71. And God, as we come to your word this morning,

  72. I pray that you will speak to us.

  73. Not just speak to our minds,

  74. but you will speak to our hearts.

  75. We pray, God, that you will take what is written in your word

  76. and you will write it in our hearts.

  77. And God, you will give us fresh hope

  78. and fresh confidence and fresh conviction

  79. about who you are

  80. and for those of us that are in Christ,

  81. who we are in you.

  82. God, we pray that you will be with us in our midst

  83. in your wonderful and gracious name.

  84. Amen.

  85. Many years ago, Professor Cyril Edwin Joad,

  86. who was once the head of philosophy and psychology

  87. at University of London,

  88. he was also a public figure, a broadcaster.

  89. He was asked the question,

  90. of all the people in history,

  91. who would you most like to interview

  92. and what question would you like to ask them?

  93. And at this stage in his life,

  94. Joad had abandoned his Christian faith.

  95. He considered himself an agnostic.

  96. And he answered the question,

  97. I would most like to meet Jesus Christ.

  98. And the question I would ask him

  99. is the most important question in all the world,

  100. did you or did you not rise from the dead?

  101. Well, Professor Joad is right when he says

  102. this is the most important question in all the world.

  103. Because upon the veracity or the truthfulness

  104. of Christianity's claim that Jesus Christ died and rose again,

  105. upon the truthfulness of that claim,

  106. as Jesus said would happen,

  107. as the Old Testament said would happen,

  108. Christianity stands or falls.

  109. In fact, the Apostle Paul,

  110. one of the early leaders in the church

  111. and a guy who wrote much of the New Testament,

  112. said that if Jesus' resurrection is proved false,

  113. we, our Christians, are the most pitied of all people in the world

  114. because our faith is futile.

  115. Our belief is delusional.

  116. Our hope is baseless.

  117. In fact, it is no hope at all.

  118. And that's what Matthew wants us to see

  119. in the passage that Reza read to us this morning.

  120. Matthew wants those of us

  121. that consider ourselves followers of Jesus

  122. to live with conviction and certainty

  123. regarding the historical reality of Christ's death and resurrection.

  124. Some of us may be here this morning.

  125. Maybe you've got doubts

  126. about whether the resurrection of Jesus really happened

  127. or whether it was something metaphorical,

  128. something that happened in people's hearts.

  129. Maybe some of us here consider ourselves Christians,

  130. but just the grind of life,

  131. the everyday difficulty of life,

  132. kind of makes us wonder,

  133. what's the relevance of it anyway?

  134. I mean, why does it really matter?

  135. Maybe you've been a follower of Jesus,

  136. but as you've been reading and thinking,

  137. the narrative of our culture

  138. has put doubts in your mind.

  139. Well, today, Matthew wants us

  140. to have greater conviction and certainty

  141. regarding the resurrection of Jesus.

  142. And so he does that in this passage

  143. by showing us two things.

  144. Firstly, he wants to show us

  145. the extensive effort of the religious leaders.

  146. And secondly, he wants to show us

  147. the matchless power of God.

  148. So let's look at those two things in turn.

  149. Firstly, the extensive effort of the religious leaders.

  150. If you've got your Bible or your bulletin

  151. open up in front of us,

  152. we're going to be looking at the scripture

  153. and diving into it.

  154. But our passage today that Reza read to us

  155. has three clear sections to it.

  156. It's broken down there in the bulletin for you.

  157. In the first section, verse 62 to 66,

  158. tells us about how the religious leaders,

  159. is their extensive efforts to avert or forestall

  160. or even stop the resurrection of Jesus happening.

  161. And in the last section, in chapter 28, verses 11 to 15,

  162. we see the extensive effort of the religious leaders

  163. to discredit the resurrection once they know about it.

  164. And so look at verse 62 with me.

  165. It says,

  166. The next day, that is the day after the preparation,

  167. the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate

  168. and they said to him,

  169. Sir, we remember how that imposter said

  170. while he was still alive,

  171. after three days I will rise.

  172. Therefore, order the tomb to be made secure.

  173. Now immediately we should be struck

  174. by the urgency of the religious leaders

  175. to crush any idea that Jesus would rise from the dead.

  176. Matthew tells us that the day after Jesus died,

  177. which is a Saturday,

  178. which is a Jewish Sabbath,

  179. the day of rest where no Jew should do any work

  180. or gather before anyone else,

  181. and especially on this day,

  182. which is the Passover Sabbath,

  183. the one day in the year

  184. where all the religious leaders should be either at home

  185. or gathering with God's people in the temple,

  186. these religious leaders are hustling and bustling,

  187. very busy with activity,

  188. gathering before Pilate,

  189. a non-Jew,

  190. as they make this attempt

  191. to cover over Jesus' resurrection.

  192. And they gather before Pilate

  193. and they ask that the tomb be securely sealed and guarded.

  194. John Stott calls this

  195. an astonishing breach of Sabbath law

  196. that no other incident in the Gospels

  197. show how clearly desperate the authorities were

  198. to eliminate Jesus.

  199. You'll no doubt remember,

  200. if you're familiar with the Gospels,

  201. how often Jesus gets in trouble

  202. with these very religious leaders

  203. for breaking the Sabbath law

  204. because he's often healing somebody that's sick

  205. or raising somebody back to life.

  206. Here these same religious leaders

  207. are breaking Sabbath law

  208. to make sure that Jesus stays well and truly dead.

  209. And notice what they call Pilate.

  210. Did you notice the first word?

  211. Sir, they say.

  212. In Greek, the word is kiriia.

  213. It's a word that honors somebody in authority.

  214. It's a word of submission.

  215. But it's a word that means Lord.

  216. In fact, in Matthew's Gospel,

  217. it only ever refers to Jesus

  218. or God himself.

  219. And yet here,

  220. the religious leaders go to Pilate

  221. and call him Lord.

  222. Matthew wants us to see

  223. that the authorities

  224. are submitting themselves to Pilate

  225. the way believers are submitted,

  226. are meant to submit themselves to God alone.

  227. Now, in this passage,

  228. they come to Pilate and they say,

  229. we heard that that imposter

  230. had made some claims.

  231. He was gonna rise after three days.

  232. Let's secure the tomb

  233. to make sure that it doesn't happen.

  234. And it's a bit hard to know

  235. what their motivation is.

  236. Are they concerned

  237. that the disciples

  238. are going to steal Jesus' body away

  239. and then make this claim?

  240. That's what they say in verse 64.

  241. Or are they mainly concerned

  242. that Jesus might just do

  243. what he said he would do?

  244. I mean, it's hard to know.

  245. Certainly, they've seen

  246. and heard of Jesus' powers,

  247. his miraculous healing of the sick,

  248. his curing of leprosy,

  249. his raising of Lazarus from the dead.

  250. He claimed more than six times

  251. in Matthew's gospel alone

  252. that he would die and rise again.

  253. They know about these claims.

  254. They say so themselves.

  255. And on the other hand,

  256. where are the disciples?

  257. The disciples are nowhere

  258. to be seen at this point, right?

  259. In fact, we haven't heard

  260. from the disciples

  261. since Judas betrayed Jesus.

  262. Peter denied him.

  263. And the disciples all flee at his arrest.

  264. The disciples are long gone.

  265. And the greatest concern

  266. of the Pharisees here

  267. is not the disciples.

  268. I think their concern is Jesus.

  269. That just maybe,

  270. Jesus really would do

  271. what he said he would do.

  272. And so look at how many times

  273. they used the word secure

  274. in the first few verses.

  275. Verse 64.

  276. Lord, sir, they say,

  277. order the tomb to be made secure.

  278. Verse 65.

  279. Pilate said,

  280. you have a guard of soldiers.

  281. Go and make the tomb secure as you can.

  282. So they went away

  283. making the tomb secure

  284. by sealing the stone

  285. and setting a guard.

  286. The irony is,

  287. Donald Hagner says,

  288. is that Jesus' opponents

  289. took his own words

  290. about his rising from the death

  291. more seriously

  292. than Jesus' own disciples did.

  293. Well, whatever their motivating fears are,

  294. their fears are certainly motivating them.

  295. Because look at their ironic behavior.

  296. Verse 63.

  297. They say,

  298. they go to Pilate

  299. and what do they call Jesus?

  300. They call him an imposter.

  301. A deceiver.

  302. Somebody wants to hide the truth.

  303. Well, look at their behavior

  304. in verse 11.

  305. When the guards

  306. told the chief priests

  307. all that had taken place,

  308. they assembled the elders

  309. and took counsel.

  310. They gave them

  311. sufficient sum of money.

  312. That's a lovely term.

  313. I'd love to know

  314. what that really means.

  315. Very ominous term, right?

  316. They gave a sufficient sum of money

  317. to the soldiers

  318. and they said,

  319. tell the people

  320. his disciples came at night

  321. and stole them away

  322. while we were asleep.

  323. And if it comes

  324. to the governor's years,

  325. we will satisfy him

  326. and keep you out of trouble.

  327. So they say,

  328. listen,

  329. this imposter,

  330. this deceiver,

  331. he doesn't,

  332. this guy who lies to everyone,

  333. oh, wait, wait.

  334. Let's just lie

  335. and keep the story

  336. covered up

  337. with a nice sum of money.

  338. And amazingly,

  339. the chief priests

  340. and the Pharisees

  341. are the first people

  342. in the history of the world

  343. to hear the good news of Easter.

  344. Jesus is risen

  345. from the grave.

  346. And yet for them,

  347. it's the worst news ever.

  348. Their worst fears

  349. are realized.

  350. And yet worse than that,

  351. actually for them,

  352. I wonder if they realize

  353. that they contributed

  354. to the veracity

  355. of the fact

  356. that the tomb was empty.

  357. I mean, think about it.

  358. If they had not had

  359. a bunch of guards

  360. seal the tomb,

  361. watching over the tomb,

  362. if they'd left it as it was

  363. and then Jesus' body disappeared,

  364. it would have been far easier

  365. to them say,

  366. oh, well,

  367. I guess his disciples

  368. came in the middle of the night

  369. and stole his body away.

  370. But by putting

  371. a bunch of armed guards there,

  372. sealing the tomb,

  373. doing everything

  374. they can

  375. to make sure

  376. that there's no ways

  377. anybody can steal the body,

  378. then when the body's not there,

  379. well, it's hard to say.

  380. I guess his disciples

  381. came in the night, right?

  382. It's a little harder

  383. to say that

  384. with all the security measures

  385. they put in place.

  386. Daniel Doriani says,

  387. it's a delicious irony

  388. that by trying

  389. to cover up

  390. the resurrection,

  391. they only helped

  392. to strengthen

  393. the legitimacy

  394. of the empty tomb.

  395. And what a great

  396. cover up it is, right?

  397. I mean,

  398. it's a great cover up.

  399. All this bribery

  400. and corruption

  401. worked pretty well

  402. to get Judas

  403. on their side.

  404. Remember,

  405. they lined Judas' pockets

  406. with 30 silver coins.

  407. Well,

  408. here they try again.

  409. Look at verse 15.

  410. And so,

  411. they took the money,

  412. did as they were directed,

  413. and the story

  414. has been spread

  415. amongst the Jews

  416. to this day.

  417. Now,

  418. when Matthew says,

  419. to this day,

  420. he's obviously writing

  421. about his day and age,

  422. right?

  423. He's not writing necessarily

  424. for all time in history.

  425. This was the primary story

  426. in the first century,

  427. that the tomb was empty

  428. because Jesus' disciples

  429. came in the middle

  430. of the night

  431. and stole his body away

  432. and disposed of it.

  433. And yet,

  434. when Matthew says

  435. that's the story

  436. that is told

  437. to this day,

  438. it has an elasticity

  439. to it,

  440. doesn't it?

  441. In the second

  442. and third century,

  443. this is the main story

  444. that people told

  445. why Jesus' tomb

  446. was found empty.

  447. We know in the second century

  448. that many Christians

  449. were still encountering

  450. the story

  451. and writing

  452. to oppose it.

  453. But even in our day and age,

  454. this is one of the stories

  455. we hear, right?

  456. This is one of the reasons

  457. given for the empty tomb,

  458. that the disciples came

  459. and stole it away.

  460. And yet,

  461. this story,

  462. like so many others,

  463. fails to answer

  464. the key questions

  465. of the narrative.

  466. For example,

  467. how could the gods

  468. possibly know

  469. who stole the body

  470. if they were fast asleep?

  471. I mean,

  472. generally,

  473. generally,

  474. eyewitnesses

  475. that are asleep

  476. and don't see

  477. the incident

  478. aren't very good witnesses.

  479. Furthermore,

  480. don't you think

  481. that at least

  482. one of these

  483. trained gods

  484. who knew

  485. that the penalty

  486. for falling asleep

  487. on duty

  488. was death?

  489. Don't you think

  490. one of them

  491. would have woken up

  492. at the sound

  493. of this massive stone

  494. being rolled away

  495. or the earthquake

  496. shaking?

  497. How is it that they

  498. just had the best

  499. night's sleep

  500. of their entire life?

  501. All ten of them,

  502. right?

  503. And furthermore,

  504. if Jesus died

  505. and was buried,

  506. why hasn't anybody

  507. in 2,000 years

  508. produced any evidence

  509. of where

  510. their corpse lay,

  511. bones lie,

  512. his dead body?

  513. The historian

  514. Craig Blomberg

  515. says,

  516. no ancient writer,

  517. Jew,

  518. Greek,

  519. or Roman

  520. has ever identified

  521. any tomb

  522. in which Jesus'

  523. body remains.

  524. Douglas O'Donnell

  525. asks a fascinating

  526. question.

  527. He says,

  528. how realistic

  529. is it to believe

  530. that these

  531. faithful Jews

  532. Jewish men

  533. and the women,

  534. if they indeed

  535. stole the body

  536. and lay it

  537. to rest somewhere,

  538. would violate

  539. half the Ten Commandments,

  540. would violate

  541. Jesus' own

  542. ethical teachings,

  543. and would violate

  544. their own consciences

  545. for a fraud,

  546. for a lie,

  547. if they knew

  548. it was all false?

  549. If the disciples

  550. knew where

  551. Jesus' body was

  552. and simply dumped it,

  553. what would be

  554. the possible motive

  555. for dedicating

  556. their lives

  557. to proclaim

  558. this message?

  559. of Jesus'

  560. resurrection

  561. from the dead.

  562. The motivation

  563. certainly wasn't

  564. money.

  565. Read the Acts

  566. of the Apostle.

  567. Money is not

  568. something they

  569. flourished in.

  570. The motivation

  571. certainly wasn't

  572. honor and prestige

  573. and reputation.

  574. When you read

  575. Paul's letters,

  576. what you find

  577. is that all he got

  578. for proclaiming

  579. this message

  580. was shame,

  581. ridicule,

  582. persecution.

  583. In fact,

  584. the message

  585. cost Jesus

  586. and his disciples

  587. everything they had

  588. because they

  589. believed in it.

  590. Reputation,

  591. friends,

  592. community,

  593. family,

  594. indeed their own

  595. lives.

  596. N.T. Wright

  597. says,

  598. it was three

  599. centuries before

  600. anybody gained

  601. anything except

  602. insults,

  603. danger,

  604. torture,

  605. and death

  606. for believing

  607. the resurrection.

  608. Friends,

  609. people might

  610. sacrifice their

  611. lives for

  612. honor or

  613. some great

  614. reward.

  615. Seldom

  616. will people

  617. sacrifice

  618. their lives

  619. if they

  620. know that

  621. it's a

  622. fraud

  623. if it's

  624. all a

  625. lie.

  626. And that

  627. begs the

  628. question,

  629. what turned

  630. these fearful,

  631. cowardly

  632. disciples that

  633. we read

  634. about in

  635. chapter 26

  636. who run

  637. away at

  638. the prospect

  639. of Jesus'

  640. arrest,

  641. what turned

  642. them into

  643. bold and

  644. courageous

  645. men almost

  646. overnight?

  647. A few

  648. weeks later,

  649. they stand

  650. before the

  651. very authorities

  652. that crucified

  653. Jesus and

  654. these men

  655. say,

  656. you better

  657. not proclaim

  658. the resurrection

  659. of Jesus

  660. and they

  661. say,

  662. what are we

  663. to do?

  664. To listen

  665. to God

  666. or to

  667. listen to

  668. you?

  669. And they

  670. go and

  671. they say,

  672. put us in

  673. jail if you

  674. will,

  675. we will not

  676. proclaim,

  677. stop proclaiming

  678. the message.

  679. What turned

  680. these cowardly

  681. men,

  682. these fearful

  683. women,

  684. into bold,

  685. courageous

  686. witnesses

  687. of Jesus?

  688. Friends,

  689. some people

  690. say,

  691. well,

  692. that was back

  693. then,

  694. you know,

  695. they were

  696. ignorant,

  697. they were

  698. primitive

  699. people,

  700. they were

  701. superstitious

  702. people,

  703. but these

  704. days we are

  705. enlightened,

  706. we are

  707. scientific,

  708. people,

  709. except no

  710. Jew,

  711. no Gentile

  712. in the

  713. ancient world

  714. ever had

  715. the idea

  716. that someone

  717. would rise

  718. from the

  719. dead.

  720. It was not

  721. part of any

  722. worldview,

  723. any culture,

  724. any religion

  725. of the time,

  726. that anybody

  727. would bodily

  728. rise from the

  729. dead in a

  730. physical body.

  731. N.T. Wright

  732. says,

  733. a great

  734. historian,

  735. everybody in

  736. the ancient

  737. world,

  738. just like

  739. everybody in

  740. the modern

  741. world,

  742. knows perfectly

  743. well that

  744. dead people

  745. don't get

  746. resurrected.

  747. Friends,

  748. do you hear

  749. what Matthew

  750. is trying to

  751. show us

  752. here?

  753. Matthew is

  754. showing us

  755. the extent

  756. that the

  757. people in

  758. Jesus'

  759. day went

  760. to avert,

  761. to stop,

  762. to cover up,

  763. to discredit,

  764. everything they

  765. could to make

  766. sure that the

  767. message of

  768. Jesus'

  769. resurrection

  770. did not

  771. get out.

  772. Do you see

  773. the security

  774. measures,

  775. the hush money

  776. that's paid

  777. out,

  778. the stories,

  779. the angst

  780. as they take

  781. counsel together?

  782. Do you see

  783. the passion

  784. that they go

  785. to,

  786. to avert,

  787. to discredit

  788. the resurrection?

  789. Do you

  790. sense their

  791. agony,

  792. their desperation

  793. using every

  794. means possible

  795. at their

  796. disposal to

  797. stop and

  798. put a lid

  799. on this

  800. message that

  801. Jesus died

  802. and rose

  803. again?

  804. The religious

  805. leaders,

  806. Pilate,

  807. the Pharisees,

  808. the scribes,

  809. everyone goes

  810. to extreme

  811. measures,

  812. extensive

  813. measures to

  814. keep the

  815. lid on,

  816. to negate

  817. and avert

  818. Jesus'

  819. resurrection.

  820. But that's

  821. of course not

  822. all Matthew

  823. wants us to

  824. see.

  825. He wants us

  826. to see and

  827. to know and

  828. to believe that

  829. despite all

  830. these efforts,

  831. the resurrection

  832. of Jesus really

  833. happened.

  834. Matthew's point

  835. is not just

  836. that Jesus rose

  837. from the dead,

  838. but that it

  839. happened despite

  840. all the efforts

  841. of those

  842. involved,

  843. who tried

  844. everything they

  845. could to

  846. avoid it.

  847. And Matthew's

  848. point here is

  849. that God is

  850. Lord, not

  851. Pilate, and

  852. that not the

  853. politicians, not

  854. the religious

  855. leaders, that

  856. God is Lord

  857. and God did

  858. that which man

  859. could not do.

  860. And so look

  861. at verse 1 to

  862. 10 of Matthew

  863. 28.

  864. Here Matthew

  865. wants us to

  866. not only

  867. understand it,

  868. but to see it.

  869. And I say

  870. that because

  871. four times

  872. Matthew uses

  873. the word

  874. behold.

  875. Look at

  876. verse 2.

  877. Behold, there

  878. was an

  879. earthquake.

  880. Verse 7.

  881. Behold, he

  882. is going

  883. before you.

  884. Verse 7

  885. again.

  886. Behold, I

  887. have told you

  888. these things.

  889. Verse 9.

  890. Behold, Jesus

  891. met them and

  892. said, greetings.

  893. The word

  894. behold means

  895. to see

  896. something.

  897. It's Matthew's

  898. way of saying,

  899. look here, look

  900. at the evidence,

  901. examine the

  902. evidence.

  903. He says in

  904. verse 6, the

  905. angels say,

  906. come and see

  907. the place

  908. where Jesus

  909. once lay.

  910. What is it

  911. that Matthew

  912. wants us to

  913. see?

  914. Well, a couple

  915. of things.

  916. Firstly, he

  917. wants us to

  918. see what

  919. the witnesses

  920. saw.

  921. He wants us

  922. to see the

  923. witnesses.

  924. Who are the

  925. first witnesses

  926. to Jesus'

  927. death and

  928. resurrection?

  929. It's the

  930. woman, right?

  931. It's Mary

  932. Magdalene and

  933. another lady

  934. called Mary,

  935. the two

  936. Marys.

  937. Many writers

  938. have observed

  939. that in

  940. the first

  941. century,

  942. women had

  943. low social

  944. status.

  945. They weren't

  946. considered

  947. credible witnesses

  948. in a court

  949. of law.

  950. Women were

  951. of low

  952. social status,

  953. which meant

  954. that if you

  955. want to make

  956. up a story

  957. and you need

  958. some witnesses

  959. to back up

  960. your story,

  961. the last

  962. people in

  963. the world

  964. that you

  965. choose to

  966. back up

  967. your made

  968. up story

  969. would be

  970. women.

  971. That's not

  972. because women

  973. are inferior,

  974. but in

  975. the first

  976. century,

  977. their witness

  978. wasn't

  979. considered

  980. very credible.

  981. And so

  982. why does

  983. Matthew,

  984. of all

  985. the people,

  986. if he makes

  987. up the

  988. story,

  989. why do

  990. all the

  991. gospel

  992. writers

  993. choose

  994. Mary 1

  995. and Mary

  996. 2 as

  997. their first

  998. witnesses?

  999. The answer

  1000. is,

  1001. the only

  1002. explainable

  1003. answer is

  1004. because that

  1005. must be what

  1006. took place.

  1007. That must be

  1008. what happened.

  1009. Pinchas

  1010. Lapidde

  1011. wrote a book

  1012. called The

  1013. Resurrection

  1014. of Jesus

  1015. from a

  1016. Jewish

  1017. perspective.

  1018. Listen to

  1019. what he

  1020. says.

  1021. He says,

  1022. if the

  1023. narrative

  1024. were made

  1025. up,

  1026. one would

  1027. have avoided

  1028. making women

  1029. the crown

  1030. witnesses

  1031. in the

  1032. resurrection,

  1033. since they

  1034. were considered

  1035. in rabbinic

  1036. Judaism,

  1037. unable of

  1038. giving valid

  1039. testimony.

  1040. The fact

  1041. that the

  1042. same woman

  1043. wanted to

  1044. anoint the

  1045. dead Jesus

  1046. right after

  1047. his burial,

  1048. as Jewish

  1049. custom demanded,

  1050. proves that

  1051. basically none

  1052. of his

  1053. disciples,

  1054. nor the

  1055. woman

  1056. themselves,

  1057. expected the

  1058. resurrection.

  1059. You see

  1060. that?

  1061. Matthew wants

  1062. us to see

  1063. that the

  1064. resurrection of

  1065. Jesus is not

  1066. the fiction of

  1067. man,

  1068. it's not a

  1069. made up story,

  1070. it's the

  1071. work of

  1072. God.

  1073. It's the

  1074. work of

  1075. God.

  1076. Secondly,

  1077. he wants us

  1078. to see the

  1079. work of God

  1080. himself.

  1081. One of the

  1082. things I found

  1083. out this week

  1084. that I'd

  1085. never seen

  1086. before,

  1087. is that

  1088. the angels

  1089. don't open

  1090. the tomb

  1091. so that

  1092. Jesus can

  1093. get out.

  1094. I'd always

  1095. imagined Jesus

  1096. stuck behind

  1097. the tomb,

  1098. and the

  1099. angels come

  1100. and open

  1101. up the

  1102. seal,

  1103. and Jesus

  1104. then walks

  1105. out.

  1106. But actually,

  1107. look what

  1108. happens here.

  1109. Matthew

  1110. doesn't tell

  1111. us that the

  1112. angels open

  1113. the tomb

  1114. that Jesus

  1115. might get

  1116. out,

  1117. but that

  1118. the woman

  1119. might get

  1120. in,

  1121. and see

  1122. the tomb

  1123. is already

  1124. empty.

  1125. Right?

  1126. The angel

  1127. rolls back

  1128. the stone,

  1129. and the

  1130. tomb is

  1131. empty.

  1132. Stone or

  1133. no stone,

  1134. God or

  1135. no God,

  1136. seal or

  1137. no seal,

  1138. Jesus is

  1139. not in

  1140. there.

  1141. Jesus has

  1142. already

  1143. left.

  1144. And what's

  1145. the point?

  1146. The point

  1147. here is that

  1148. the angels

  1149. didn't set

  1150. Jesus free.

  1151. God raised

  1152. Jesus from

  1153. the dead.

  1154. The point

  1155. here is not

  1156. that the

  1157. earthquake set

  1158. Jesus free,

  1159. it's that

  1160. God raised

  1161. him from

  1162. the dead.

  1163. And what's

  1164. the point

  1165. of the

  1166. angel

  1167. and the

  1168. earthquake

  1169. anyway?

  1170. Well in

  1171. Matthew's

  1172. gospel,

  1173. angels and

  1174. earthquakes are

  1175. always a sign

  1176. that God

  1177. is at work,

  1178. a sign of

  1179. God's agency.

  1180. Remember how

  1181. in chapter

  1182. one,

  1183. an angel

  1184. appears to

  1185. Mary,

  1186. or actually

  1187. to Joseph,

  1188. and says,

  1189. Joseph,

  1190. your wife,

  1191. your engaged

  1192. wife,

  1193. your betrothed

  1194. wife,

  1195. Mary,

  1196. is with

  1197. child.

  1198. This is

  1199. something that

  1200. God has

  1201. done for

  1202. her.

  1203. And so

  1204. what's

  1205. Matthew's

  1206. point here?

  1207. That despite

  1208. the gods,

  1209. despite the

  1210. seal

  1211. tomb,

  1212. despite the

  1213. stone,

  1214. despite the

  1215. speculation and

  1216. the effort to

  1217. avert it,

  1218. the tomb was

  1219. made empty by

  1220. God himself,

  1221. by divine

  1222. agency,

  1223. not human

  1224. activity.

  1225. It wasn't the

  1226. work of the

  1227. disciples that

  1228. emptied the

  1229. tomb.

  1230. It wasn't the

  1231. work of the

  1232. angels that

  1233. emptied the

  1234. tomb.

  1235. It wasn't the

  1236. work of the

  1237. earthquake that

  1238. emptied the

  1239. tomb.

  1240. Friends,

  1241. this is the

  1242. work of God

  1243. himself.

  1244. The angels

  1245. played no

  1246. part in the

  1247. resurrection.

  1248. The earthquake

  1249. played no

  1250. part in the

  1251. resurrection.

  1252. The resurrection

  1253. was an

  1254. activity of

  1255. God himself.

  1256. Matthew wants

  1257. us to see the

  1258. witnesses,

  1259. to see the

  1260. work in the

  1261. hand of God.

  1262. And finally,

  1263. Matthew wants

  1264. us to see the

  1265. physical body

  1266. of Jesus.

  1267. There's two

  1268. things in this

  1269. passage that's

  1270. been bothering

  1271. me all week.

  1272. three times

  1273. or twice in

  1274. this chapter

  1275. and once in

  1276. a previous

  1277. chapter, it

  1278. says that

  1279. Jesus rises

  1280. from the

  1281. dead and

  1282. goes on to

  1283. Galilee where

  1284. he meets his

  1285. disciples.

  1286. And I thought

  1287. that's the

  1288. strangest thing.

  1289. Why does the

  1290. Bible make that

  1291. point?

  1292. It says it

  1293. here in verse

  1294. 7.

  1295. The angels

  1296. say,

  1297. do not be

  1298. afraid.

  1299. Go quickly

  1300. tell his

  1301. disciples he's

  1302. risen and

  1303. behold he is

  1304. going before

  1305. you into

  1306. Galilee and

  1307. you will see

  1308. him there.

  1309. In verse

  1310. 10, Jesus

  1311. meets the

  1312. women and

  1313. he says,

  1314. do not be

  1315. afraid.

  1316. Go and tell

  1317. my brothers to

  1318. go to

  1319. Galilee and

  1320. there they

  1321. will see

  1322. me.

  1323. And in

  1324. chapter 26,

  1325. just two

  1326. chapters before,

  1327. Jesus says,

  1328. after I'm

  1329. raised up,

  1330. I will go

  1331. before you

  1332. into Galilee.

  1333. And I just

  1334. thought that is

  1335. the strangest

  1336. like, I

  1337. mean that's

  1338. random.

  1339. Why do we

  1340. need to know

  1341. that?

  1342. Why does

  1343. Matthew want

  1344. to tell us

  1345. that three

  1346. times?

  1347. Well it

  1348. seems to me

  1349. that this is a

  1350. really important

  1351. incident.

  1352. When the

  1353. Bible mentions

  1354. something two

  1355. or three

  1356. times, it

  1357. wants us to

  1358. take note of

  1359. it.

  1360. What's the

  1361. significance of

  1362. this?

  1363. I think what

  1364. Matthew and

  1365. what God

  1366. wants to

  1367. tell us is

  1368. that Jesus'

  1369. resurrection

  1370. took place in

  1371. real time and

  1372. place with a

  1373. real physical

  1374. body that people

  1375. could touch and

  1376. see.

  1377. You see, these

  1378. days we often

  1379. hear people

  1380. saying, well it

  1381. doesn't matter

  1382. whether Jesus

  1383. rose or not.

  1384. What matters

  1385. is that he

  1386. rises in your

  1387. heart, right?

  1388. And Matthew

  1389. wants to say,

  1390. no, no, no.

  1391. It actually

  1392. matters that he

  1393. rose in flesh

  1394. and blood, that

  1395. the disciples saw

  1396. him and touched

  1397. him, that they

  1398. heard him with

  1399. their own ears.

  1400. Matthew's at

  1401. pains to show

  1402. us that that's

  1403. not what happened,

  1404. that Jesus

  1405. didn't meet his

  1406. disciples in some

  1407. kind of

  1408. parapsychological,

  1409. extra sensory

  1410. spiritual way.

  1411. He met them in

  1412. the flesh, in

  1413. time and space.

  1414. The angels don't

  1415. say, listen, the

  1416. stone may be

  1417. rolled away, but

  1418. it doesn't matter,

  1419. just take it on

  1420. faith.

  1421. One commentator

  1422. says, the

  1423. resurrection calls

  1424. for renewal of

  1425. our minds, not

  1426. the removing of

  1427. our brains, right?

  1428. The angels don't

  1429. say, well, just

  1430. look from inside

  1431. your heart or

  1432. look inside your

  1433. soul or just

  1434. see Jesus in the

  1435. face of your

  1436. sleeping baby.

  1437. Or, you know,

  1438. feel him in the

  1439. coolness of the

  1440. breeze on a

  1441. spring evening.

  1442. Or see Jesus, the

  1443. risen Jesus in the

  1444. rising sunset.

  1445. No, no, they want

1446. us to feel, to sense

  1447. the reality of the

  1448. real Jesus.

  1449. Look at verse 9.

  1450. It says, behold,

  1451. Jesus met them and

  1452. said, Josan,

  1453. said, greetings,

  1454. right?

  1455. Hello, good

  1456. morning.

  1457. He came and

  1458. he, and it

  1459. says, they took

  1460. hold of his feet

  1461. and they worshipped

  1462. him.

  1463. One commentator

  1464. says, ghosts

  1465. don't normally have

  1466. feet.

  1467. They took hold of

  1468. his feet.

  1469. They felt his

  1470. hands.

  1471. They heard his

  1472. actual voice with

  1473. their actual ears.

  1474. The angel invites

  1475. them to use their

  1476. minds to make sense

  1477. of what they see.

  1478. And friends, this is

  1479. why Matthew writes

  1480. this.

  1481. This is why the

  1482. other gospel writers

  1483. write the biography

  1484. of Jesus.

1485. They want us to see,

  1486. to know that Jesus

  1487. really died and he

  1488. really rose again.

  1489. Do you remember the

  1490. beginning of Luke's

  1491. gospel?

  1492. Luke writes this in

  1493. chapter one, the

  1494. beginning of his

  1495. gospel.

  1496. He says,

1497. in as much as many

  1498. have undertaken to

  1499. write a narrative of

  1500. the things that were

  1501. accomplished about

  1502. Jesus, just as those

  1503. others who from the

  1504. beginning were

  1505. eyewitnesses and

  1506. ministers of the

  1507. word, spoke them to

1508. us, it seemed good to

  1509. me also, having

  1510. followed these things

  1511. closely for some time,

  1512. to write an orderly

  1513. account for you, most

  1514. excellent Theophilus,

  1515. that you may have

  1516. certainty concerning

  1517. the things you have

  1518. been taught.

  1519. Friends, that's what

  1520. the gospel writers

  1521. want.

  1522. That's what Matthew,

  1523. Mark, and Luke, and

  1524. John want for us.

  1525. That's what they want

1526. for Mary and for the

  1527. disciples and for

  1528. followers of Jesus.

  1529. Friends, that's what

  1530. Jesus wants for us

  1531. today.

  1532. Certainty, conviction,

  1533. assurance of faith,

  1534. that Jesus of Nazareth

1535. really did die and he

  1536. really did rise again.

  1537. Jesus didn't just rise

  1538. in their hearts, he

  1539. didn't just rise in a

1540. dream or rise in the

  1541. sunset, no, he

  1542. rise in physical bodily

  1543. form and he made

  1544. himself known.

  1545. Jesus died and rose

  1546. again.

1547. And so what should we

  1548. do with this?

1549. What does this mean for

1550. us in our day and age?

1551. Well, let me leave us

1552. as we close with three

  1553. things, three thoughts.

  1554. Firstly, what should we

  1555. do with this?

  1556. Believe it.

  1557. Believe it.

1558. I hope you see what

  1559. Matthew wants for us.

  1560. The death of

  1561. resurrection of Jesus

  1562. despite all the forces

1563. of hell, all the schemes

  1564. of man historically took

  1565. place.

1566. It happened in time and

  1567. place.

  1568. Believe it.

  1569. And so friends, when

  1570. Jesus comes to Thomas

1571. later on and he says,

1572. put your hands in my

  1573. nail scarred hands.

1574. Feel my, the scar on my

  1575. side.

  1576. He wants Thomas to

  1577. believe it, to really

  1578. know that it happened.

  1579. James writes in his

  1580. epistle, James is the

1581. brother of Jesus and he

  1582. says, you believe that

  1583. Jesus is God?

  1584. Well, that's good, but

  1585. that's not enough because

  1586. even the demons believe

1587. that Jesus is God and

  1588. they are destined to

  1589. hell.

  1590. In other words,

  1591. believing in our mind

  1592. intellectually or just

  1593. academically is not

  1594. enough.

1595. He wants us to know it

  1596. with conviction and

  1597. certainty, to bank our

1598. lives in it, to believe

1599. in the way that changes

  1600. our lives.

1601. Let the truth of who I

  1602. am and what happened

1603. on the cross and the

  1604. empty tomb shape your

  1605. life, says Jesus.

1606. This is the heart of the

  1607. good news.

  1608. Without the empty tomb,

  1609. there are words of

  1610. simply empty words.

  1611. Friends, do you believe

  1612. it?

1613. That Jesus died and rose

  1614. again?

  1615. That he's a seated in

  1616. heaven?

1617. He's alive and he rules

  1618. and he reigns?

  1619. Believe it.

  1620. Secondly, live it.

1621. Live in the light of

  1622. this resurrection.

1623. What I mean by this is

  1624. this.

  1625. If you're a Christian, and

1626. I know not all of us

  1627. would be Christians, but

1628. if you are a Christian

1629. today, live as exiles or

  1630. pilgrims in this world.

  1631. In other words, the

  1632. Bible says, and Jesus

1633. says again and again, if

  1634. you're a Christian, this

1635. world is not your home.

1636. Your ultimate home is in

  1637. heaven and live as

  1638. pilgrims or exiles in

  1639. this world.

1640. We looked at it earlier

  1641. in verse 10.

1642. Jesus says, go and tell

1643. my disciples that I am

1644. going ahead of them into

  1645. Galilee.

1646. There you will see me.

1647. Go and meet me there.

1648. Well, it reminds me of

  1649. John chapter 14 where

    John 14 chapter mention

  1650. Jesus says, believe in

  1651. God, believe in me.

1652. In my Father's house are

  1653. many rooms.

1654. I am going ahead of you

1655. to prepare a way for

  1656. you.

1657. I will come again and

1658. take you to myself that

1659. you may be where I am

  1660. also.

1661. Jesus again and again and

1662. again says that the life

1663. of a Christian is one who

1664. lives away from our home.

1665. That this world is not our

  1666. home.

1667. We are exiles and pilgrims

  1668. here.

1669. We live in this world

  1670. knowing that our

  1671. resurrection glory is

  1672. ultimate reality.

1673. And so that means that

  1674. Christians are not those

1675. who put all their stock

1676. or their hope or their

  1677. confidence in this world

  1678. because our real world,

1679. our real home is coming.

1680. In our call to worship

  1681. this morning that Karen

1682. read for us, one of the

  1683. greatest verses in the

  1684. Bible, 1 Peter chapter 1

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

1685. says this, blessed be the

1686. God and Father of our

  1687. Lord Jesus Christ.

1688. He says, according to his

1689. great mercy, he has caused

1690. us to be born again to a

  1691. living hope through the

  1692. resurrection of Jesus, to

1693. a hope that can never

1694. perish, spoil or fade, kept

  1695. in heaven for you.

1696. Friends, I want to ask you

1697. this morning, are you living

  1698. with living hope?

1699. Is the living hope of the

  1700. resurrection of Jesus true

1701. for your life and your

  1702. heart?

1703. Are you living in light of

  1704. that?

1705. Friends, do you live with a

  1706. hope, a concrete hope

  1707. through COVID, through

  1708. economic uncertainty?

  1709. When your stock portfolio

1710. loses 30% in one year

  1711. because of everything that's

1712. going on, do you live with

  1713. hope?

  1714. A hope that is

  1715. circumstance defying.

1716. A hope that is, that that

1717. goes through the ups and

  1718. downs of life.

1719. A hope that nothing in this

1720. world can touch or dilute or

  1721. take away from you.

1722. Jesus says because he died and

1723. rose again, we get to live

  1724. with living hope.

1725. In the New Testament, the

1726. Apostle Paul says that because

  1727. of Christ's death and

  1728. resurrection, he gets to

  1729. embrace suffering and

  1730. hardship.

1731. He says, just as Christ died

1732. and rose again, I will embrace

1733. his sufferings knowing that I

1734. will die and rise again.

1735. Friends, are you able to

  1736. embrace hardship, suffering,

1737. knowing that the resurrection of

1738. Jesus means you will rise with

  1739. him again?

  1740. Moreover, friends, are we

  1741. worshippers?

1742. In verse 9, when Mary and the

1743. other Mary see Jesus, it says

1744. they fell down and they

  1745. worshipped him.

1746. In verse 17, when the disciples

1747. see Jesus, they fall down and

  1748. they worship him.

1749. Friends, I want to ask you, is

1750. the quality of our worship based

1751. on how well the musicians play on

  1752. a Sunday?

1753. Is it based on whether we like

  1754. the songs or not?

  1755. Sometimes I don't like the

  1756. songs.

  1757. I don't know if I'm allowed to

  1758. admit that.

1759. But friends, even if the songs

1760. aren't great songs, even if the

1761. musicians are having a bad day,

  1762. can we worship?

  1763. Can we worship?

1764. Because Jesus has died and

  1765. risen again.

1766. Because he's alive and he reigns

  1767. in heaven.

1768. And before Jesus, at the right

1769. hand of God the Father, all

1770. creation will bow down and say,

1771. worthy are you, the lamb that

1772. was slain, to receive honor and

1773. glory and power and authority.

1774. Worthy are you to receive our

1775. worship because you died for our

1776. sins and you were raised for our

  1777. justification.

1778. Friends, live in light of the

  1779. resurrection.

  1780. Live with living hope.

  1781. Live with certainty and

  1782. conviction.

1783. Live with embracing suffering and

1784. hardship and persecution and even

  1785. laying down your life.

1786. live as a worshiper of Jesus.

1787. Live in light of the resurrection.

1788. And then finally, proclaim it.

1789. Proclaim the hope of the

  1790. resurrection.

1791. We're going to look at it next

1792. week in our final sermon, sermon

1793. number 58 in the book of Matthew.

1794. Over five years, we're going to

  1795. look at it.

1796. But look at briefly verse 6 of our

  1797. passage here.

1798. The angels say to Mary and Mary 1 and

1799. Mary 2, come and see the place where

  1800. Jesus lay.

1801. Then go and tell his disciples that he

1802. has risen from the dead.

1803. Jesus sees them a few verses later and

1804. he says, do not be afraid.

1805. Go and tell my disciples to go to

1806. Galilee and there they will see me.

1807. Friends, this city of Hong Kong is the

1808. greatest city in the world.

  1809. It really is.

1810. If you're from outside of town, I know

1811. your city is the second best city.

1812. This is the greatest city in the

  1813. world.

1814. But one of the things about our city, it

  1815. is starved for hope.

1816. It is desperate for hope.

1817. And our city of seven and a half

1818. million people longing for hope.

1819. Friends, can we be agents of hope for

  1820. our city?

1821. Our city is longing for circumstance

  1822. defying hope.

1823. A hope that will carry us through the

  1824. next storm.

  1825. The next pandemic.

  1826. The next economic downturn.

  1827. The next tragedy.

1828. And those of us that are Christians

  1829. live with living hope.

  1830. Resurrection hope.

1831. That come what may, we will die and we

  1832. will rise again.

1833. And we will live in our home where

1834. there will be no more tears.

  1835. No more suffering.

  1836. No more agony.

1837. The world will pass away and all things

  1838. will be made new.

1839. And friends, our city is desperate for

  1840. this hope.

  1841. Can we proclaim it?

1842. Can we go into our universities and our

1843. schools and our city and our apartment

1844. blocks and tell of the hope and the

  1845. wonder of Jesus?

1846. Friends, if you're a Christian this morning,

1847. don't keep this message to yourself.

1848. Don't keep this to yourself.

1849. Do what Jesus tells you to do.

1850. Come and see where he died and he rose

  1851. again.

1852. But then go and tell our city the message

  1853. of hope.

1854. Friends, in the latter part of his life,

1855. Cyril Edwin Joad came back to the faith

1856. that he once abandoned as an Oxford student.

1857. He came to see, as Matthew wants him to see,

1858. not the physical body of Jesus,

1859. but he came to see the testimony of Matthew,

1860. Mark, and Luke, and John.

1861. That they record the historical facts

1862. that Jesus died and rose again.

1863. He came to have certainty and conviction

1864. and confidence in the resurrection of Jesus.

1865. That Jesus, the Son of God,

1866. died on Calvary for our sins

1867. and was raised for our justification.

1868. That we might live with him forevermore.

1869. Friends, do you believe it?

  1870. Do you live it?

1871. Are you able to proclaim it?

  1872. Let's pray together.

1873. Jesus, this morning we hear the words of Matthew.

1874. We don't just want to hear it,

1875. we want to see it.

1876. That Jesus, you really did die

1877. and you really did rise again.

1878. That God is the Apostle Paul says

1879. that if this is not true,

1880. our faith is a farce,

  1881. our beliefs are delusional,

  1882. our hope is baseless.

1883. But God, this morning we have confidence,

  1884. we have conviction,

  1885. we have certainty

1886. that this is not just a message

1887. to make us feel good,

  1888. it's not just something

1889. to help us get through our lives,

  1890. it is true,

  1891. it is historical,

  1892. it's accurate,

  1893. it is real.

  1894. Jesus, I pray,

1895. won't you send us out this morning

1896. into the great city of Hong Kong

  1897. and cause us, God,

  1898. to live with hope

  1899. and certainty and conviction.

1900. God, help us to see it,

  1901. to know it,

  1902. to believe it,

1903. and to live in light of it.

1904. We pray this in your good

  1905. and your gracious name.

  1906. Amen.

  1907. Amen.

  1908. Amen.

  1909. Amen.
