  1. Today we are starting a new book of the Bible. We're going to look at the book of Job.

  2. It is not, as we said last week, it's not Job. This isn't the book of the Bible that tells us about our faith and work.

  3. This is the book of Job.

  4. And it is a shockingly bewildering account of a good and honest man and how he suffers unbelievably.

  5. And he suffers for a reason that he doesn't know or understand.

  6. And even those of us that have the Bible and get to see behind the scenes, even we struggle with it to understand it.

  7. And we're going to look at it for the next seven weeks.

  8. Now, the book of Job is part of a genre or the section of our Bibles known as the wisdom literature.

  9. So it's not part of the history. It's not primarily narrative.

  10. It doesn't involve the nation of Israel and how God's salvation history through them or the covenant people of God.

  11. Really, it's the wisdom literature like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.

  12. And one of the things that wisdom literature is concerned about is who God is rather than what God has done

  13. and how we get to live wisely in light of who he is.

  14. And so, while most of the Bible has to do with the people of God as a community,

  15. the wisdom books really push us individually.

  16. They say, what about you?

  17. If you were in Job's shoes, how would you respond?

  18. And they call us, they question us.

  19. But one of the things that's interesting about the wisdom literature

  20. is you'd think that a section of the Bible called the wisdom literature

  21. would have all the answers to life's big questions.

  22. And actually, they very seldom do.

  23. One of the things that the wisdom literature does is it actually asks us the questions

  24. that we should be asking but very seldom ask.

  25. And they kind of provoke us and they prod us by asking these really big and challenging questions.

  26. For instance, last year we looked at Ecclesiastes.

  27. What is the meaning of life?

  28. Where can we find hope and purpose?

  29. And Job is going to do similarly.

  30. Secondly, the wisdom literature helps us find wisdom by asking us these questions

  31. that are going to bring us face to face with who God is.

  32. They're going to challenge us with who is our understanding of God.

  33. Now, at first, the book of Job seems to be about suffering.

  34. And in some ways it is.

  35. And we're going to see an incredible amount of suffering by this really good man.

  36. But actually, the book of Job is much more than just about suffering.

  37. What it's really about, it's actually about the limits of our understanding.

  38. It asks us the question, what will we do when our understanding of God and who He is

  39. and how He ought to run the world makes no sense to us?

  40. When our understanding of who God is and whether God is really sovereign is turned on its head,

  41. how will we respond?

  42. Will we throw our hands in the air and say, that's it, I'm done?

  43. Or will we come and trust Him?

  44. Will we trust Him?

  45. And so what the book of Job wants us to do is to step back and to see that our knowledge

  46. and our understanding of the world and how it works

  47. and how we think God ought to run the world is tremendously limited.

  48. And when our questions aren't answered and when the world seems completely disorientated

  49. and storm-tossed and when God's ways of dealing with the world seem nonsensical, unfair, even unjust,

  50. will we walk away or will we trust Him?

  51. That's what the book of Job is going to ask us.

  52. And so let's listen as we, Angelina comes and reads to us,

  53. Job chapter 1 and most of Job chapter 2.

Job 1 chapter mention Job 2 chapter mention

  54. So let's listen to the reading of God's word this morning.

  55. Reading from Job chapter 1 and 2.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  56. Starting in verse 1 we read,

  57. There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job.

  58. And that man was blameless and upright,

  59. one who feared God and turned away from evil.

  60. There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

  61. He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels,

  62. 500 yoke of oxen and 500 female donkeys and very many servants,

  63. so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the East.

  64. His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day.

  65. And they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

  66. And when the days of feast had run their course,

  67. Job would send and consecrate them.

  68. And he would rise early in the morning

  69. and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all.

  70. For Job said,

  71. It may be that my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.

  72. Thus Job did continually.

  73. Now there was a day when the sons of God came

  74. to present themselves before the Lord,

  75. and Satan also came among them.

  76. The Lord said to Satan,

  77. From where have you come?

  78. Satan answered the Lord and said,

  79. From going to and fro on the earth

  80. and from walking up and down on it.

  81. And the Lord said to Satan,

  82. Have you considered my servant Job,

  83. that there is none like him on the earth,

  84. a blameless and upright man

  85. who fears God and turns away from evil?

  86. Then Satan answered the Lord and said,

  87. Does Job fear God for no reason?

  88. Have you not put a hedge around him

  89. and his house and all that he has on every side?

  90. You have blessed the work of his hands

  91. and his possessions have increased in the land.

  92. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has

  93. and he will curse you to your face.

  94. And the Lord said to Satan,

  95. Behold, all that he has is in your hand.

  96. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.

  97. So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

  98. Now there was a day

  99. when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking

  100. wine in their oldest brother's house

  101. and there came a messenger to Job and said,

  102. The oxen were plowing,

  103. the donkeys feeding beside them

  104. and the Sabians fell upon them

  105. and took them

  106. and struck down the servants

  107. with the edge of the sword

  108. and I alone have escaped to tell you.

  109. While he was still yet speaking,

  110. there came another and said,

  111. The fire of God fell from heaven

  112. and burned up the sheep and the servants

  113. and consumed them

  114. and I alone have escaped to tell you.

  115. While he was yet speaking,

  116. there came another and said,

  117. The Chaldeans formed three groups

  118. and made a raid on the camels

  119. and took them

  120. and struck down the servants

  121. with the edge of the sword

  122. and I alone have escaped to tell you.

  123. While he was yet speaking,

  124. there came another and said,

  125. Your sons and daughters

  126. were eating and drinking wine

  127. in their oldest brother's house

  128. and behold,

  129. a great wind came across the wilderness

  130. and struck the four corners of the house

  131. and it fell upon the young people

  132. and they are dead

  133. and I alone have escaped to tell you.

  134. Then Job arose and tore his robe

  135. and shaved his head

  136. and fell on the ground

  137. and worshipped.

  138. And he said,

  139. Naked I came from my mother's womb

  140. and naked shall I return.

  141. The Lord gave

  142. and the Lord has taken away.

  143. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

  144. In all this,

  145. Job did not sin

  146. or charge God with wrong.

  147. Again,

  148. there was a day

  149. when the sons of God

  150. came to present themselves

  151. before the Lord

  152. and Satan also came among them

  153. to present himself

  154. before the Lord.

  155. And the Lord said to Satan,

  156. From where have you come?

  157. Satan answered the Lord

  158. and said,

  159. From going to and fro on the earth

  160. and from walking up and down on it.

  161. And the Lord said to Satan,

  162. Have you considered my servant Job

  163. that there is none like him on the earth,

  164. a blameless and upright man

  165. who fears God

  166. and turns away from evil?

  167. He still hoses fast his integrity

  168. although you incited me against him

  169. to destroy him without reason.

  170. Then Satan answered the Lord

  171. and said,

  172. Skin for skin,

  173. all that a man has

  174. he will give for his life.

  175. But,

  176. stretch out your hand

  177. and touch his bone

  178. and his flesh

  179. and he will curse you

  180. to your face.

  181. And the Lord said to Satan,

  182. Behold,

  183. he is in your hand.

  184. Only

  185. spare

  186. his life.

  187. So Satan went

  188. from the presence

  189. of the Lord

  190. and struck Job

  191. with loathsome

  192. sores

  193. from the sole

  194. of his feet

  195. to the crown

  196. of his head.

  197. And he took

  198. a piece

  199. of broken pottery

  200. with which

  201. to scrape himself

  202. while he sat

  203. in the ashes.

  204. Then his wife

  205. said to him,

  206. Do you still

  207. hope fast

  208. your integrity?

  209. Curse God

  210. and die.

  211. But he said

  212. to her,

  213. You speak

  214. as one of the foolish

  215. women would speak.

  216. Shall we receive

  217. good from God

  218. and shall we not

  219. receive evil?

  220. in all this

  221. Job

  222. did not

  223. sin

  224. with his lips.

  225. This

  226. is the word

  227. of God.

  228. Angelina,

  229. thank you for reading us

  230. this long passage.

  231. Let's pray together

  232. as we come

  233. with us.

  234. Heavenly Father,

  235. Lord Jesus Christ,

  236. Holy Spirit,

  237. your word

  238. is so challenging,

  239. God.

  240. It confronts us,

  241. it challenges us,

  242. it sometimes offends us.

  243. But God,

  244. we know it's true,

  245. we know it's good

  246. because it comes

  247. from you

  248. and you are true

  249. and you are good.

  250. And so God,

  251. I pray,

  252. won't you help us

  253. to understand

  254. your word?

  255. Won't you open

  256. the eyes of our hearts

  257. to see you

  258. in your word?

  259. God,

  260. bring us

  261. to your throne room

  262. this morning,

  263. God.

  264. Help us to see

  265. you afresh.

  266. God,

  267. won't you both

  268. challenge us

  269. and comfort us

  270. from your word

  271. and help us

  272. to trust you,

  273. I pray.

  274. God,

  275. this morning

  276. we also want to

  277. just pray for

  278. our friends

  279. Gary and Kathy

  280. as Gary's in hospital

  281. and just going

  282. through his

  283. tremendous trial.

  284. Won't you again

  285. draw near to them?

  286. Won't you by

  287. your Holy Spirit

  288. really draw near

  289. to them today,

  290. God?

  291. Won't you bring

  292. healing to Gary's

  293. body in the hospital bed

  294. as they're in Beijing

  295. this morning

  296. and as they come back

  297. to Hong Kong tonight?

  298. Father,

  299. we pray for your

  300. protection

  301. just on the

  302. transition

  303. back to Hong Kong

  304. and we pray

  305. for the doctors

  306. to have profound wisdom.

  307. God,

  308. we pray above all

  309. for your healing hand

  310. to be involved

  311. in Gary

  312. this weekend

  313. and the next few weeks

  314. as he recovers

  315. from his fainting episode

  316. this week.

  317. Lord,

  318. we bring our friends

  319. before your throne

  320. of grace this morning

  321. and ask in your mercy

  322. won't you heal them?

  323. In your great name

  324. we pray.

  325. Amen.

  326. Amen.

  327. Okay,

  328. well,

  329. if you've got your Bible

  330. or your bulletin,

  331. keep it open.

  332. We're going to be looking

  333. at this passage,

  334. Job chapter 1 and 2.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  335. Now,

  336. Job 1 starts off

  337. telling us really

  338. how amazing Job is.

  339. I mean,

  340. that's the point

  341. of the first few verses,

  342. right?

  343. It says,

  344. there's this man

  345. in the land of Uz

  346. and his name was Job

  347. and he was blameless

  348. and he was upright

  349. and he feared God

  350. and he turned away

  351. from evil

  352. and he was super rich

  353. and had all sorts

  354. of amazing,

  355. life was really

  356. wonderful for him

  357. and it says,

  358. verse 3,

  359. he was the greatest man

  360. of all the people

  361. of the east.

  362. And the narrator

  363. is not just trying

  364. to give us

  365. background information,

  366. he's not just

  367. painting the scene,

  368. he's making a point here

  369. and he's saying,

  370. Job was a really,

  371. really good man,

  372. a really righteous man.

  373. In fact,

  374. a more righteous,

  375. more good man

  376. you could,

  377. you would struggle

  378. to find.

  379. He says he's blameless,

  380. which doesn't mean

  381. sinless perfection.

  382. Later on,

  383. Job repents

  384. of his sin

  385. and he says,

  386. listen,

  387. I've sinned in my youth

  388. but what it means is

  389. he's genuinely authentic.

  390. His inside life

  391. and his outside life,

  392. his public life

  393. and his private life

  394. are completely aligned.

  395. He's not one thing

  396. in public

  397. and another thing

  398. in private.

  399. It says he's upright

  400. in his dealings

  401. with people,

  402. fair and honest,

  403. just,

  404. transparent.

  405. He's one who fears God.

  406. He relates to God

  407. out of reverence

  408. and humility.

  409. In verse 5,

  410. we read that he offers

  411. sacrifices on behalf

  412. of his children

  413. in case his children

  414. might possibly

  415. have sinned

  416. in their hearts.

  417. He's someone

  418. who loves

  419. what God loves

  420. and hates

  421. what God hates.

  422. We're told he's

  423. someone who

  424. turned away

  425. from evil.

  426. Whatever is even

  427. smells of anything

  428. unlike God,

  429. he wants nothing

  430. to do with it.

  431. And in verse 8,

  432. we see that God

  433. says the same thing

  434. about Job.

  435. He is blameless

  436. and upright,

  437. fears God

  438. and turns away

  439. from evil.

  440. In chapter 2,

  441. God says the same thing

  442. about him a second time.

  443. And so three times

  444. we read,

  445. here is this amazing,

  446. amazing man.

  447. And the narrator's point

  448. is in Job,

  449. we have someone

  450. who is truly righteous,

  451. truly God-fearing,

  452. truly honorable

  453. and honest.

  454. He's walked with God

  455. and he's reaped

  456. the blessings.

  457. He's abundantly

  458. prosperous.

  459. He's blessed.

  460. He is prosperous

  461. and successful.

  462. He's described

  463. as the greatest

  464. of all the people

  465. of the East.

  466. And the narrator

  467. wants us to have

  468. no doubt

  469. that a more

  470. upright,

  471. godly,

  472. religious,

  473. devout,

  474. wonderful man

  475. you will never find.

  476. Christopher Ash writes,

  477. here is a good man

  478. who's become

  479. a great man,

  480. a pious man

  481. who's become

  482. a prosperous man.

  483. It's a picture

  484. of the world

  485. as the world

  486. ought to be,

  487. a world

  488. where the righteous

  489. lead and are prosperous,

  490. where prosperity,

  491. gospel of health,

  492. wealth,

  493. and happiness

  494. seems to be true.

  495. Job is faithful

  496. and everything

  497. is good

  498. and wonderful

  499. and very short-lived

  500. because the picture

  501. doesn't last

  502. very long.

  503. Five verses

  504. of Disneyland

  505. and 41 and a half

  506. chapters

  507. of hell

  508. because verse 6

  509. everything seems

  510. to go wrong

  511. and it goes wrong

  512. for anybody

  513. who takes Job

  514. seriously.

  515. From verse 6

  516. onwards

  517. and the rest

  518. of the scripture

  519. that Angela

  520. read to us,

  521. there are two

  522. narratives

  523. that are going

  524. to happen

  525. in parallel,

  526. one in heaven

  527. and one on earth

  528. and these two

  529. narratives

  530. are deeply troubling

  531. and challenging

  532. and Job

  533. is somehow

  534. caught in the

  535. middle of them

  536. and so let's look

  537. at what happens

  538. here.

  539. Verse 6,

  540. one day God

  541. is having a meeting

  542. with his angels

  543. here called

  544. the sons of God,

  545. kind of like

  546. God's heavenly

  547. counsel

  548. in the spiritual realm

  549. and there's this

  550. character called

  551. the Satan

  552. that somehow

  553. appears and arrives

  554. and I picture

  555. that he's off

  556. in the distance

  557. somehow,

  558. I don't think

  559. he is part

  560. of God's heavenly

  561. counsel

  562. but he's in the

  563. spiritual realm

  564. and God is meeting

  565. with his heavenly

  566. counsel

  567. and he calls off

  568. to Satan

  569. and says,

  570. Satan by the way

  571. just come and

  572. talk to us

  573. for a minute,

  574. what have you

  575. been up to?

  576. And the Satan

  577. says,

  578. oh you know,

  579. I've been going

  580. to and fro

  581. of the earth,

  582. walking up and down

  583. and doing my business

  584. and what is his business?

  585. Well his business

  586. is to tempt

  587. and to taunt

  588. those who want

  589. to follow God

  590. and remain faithful

  591. and trust him,

  592. to tempt them

  593. away from trusting God

  594. and following him

  595. to living lives

  596. of self-dependence,

  597. self-sufficiency,

  598. ultimately lives

  599. of destruction.

  600. And we know

  601. from the rest

  602. of scripture

  603. that Satan does

  604. this in various ways,

  605. sometimes division

  606. and conflict

  607. in the church,

  608. sometimes through lies

  609. and accusations

  610. that he'll put

  611. in our mind,

  612. sometimes through

  613. suffering and sickness,

  614. sometimes through

  615. bitterness and resentment

  616. and hardness of heart,

  617. sometimes actually

  618. he'll do it through

  619. prosperity and blessing

  620. and pride,

  621. but Satan uses

  622. various mechanisms

  623. to tempt

  624. and taunt

  625. those that want

  626. to trust God

  627. and follow him

  628. away from trusting

  629. the Lord

  630. towards trusting

  631. themselves.

  632. And so,

  633. God starts

  634. this conversation

  635. and he says,

  636. well,

  637. Satan,

  638. this is your job

  639. to draw people

  640. away from trusting me.

  641. Have you considered

  642. my servant Job?

  643. And it looks like

  644. you're not doing

  645. a very good job

  646. because here's my

  647. servant Job

  648. and he's pretty blameless,

  649. pretty upright,

  650. pretty faithful.

  651. He loves what I love

  652. and he hates

  653. what I hate.

  654. Have you seen Job?

  655. It doesn't look like

  656. you're doing a very good job.

  657. And Satan replies,

  658. look what he says,

  659. does Job fear you

  660. for nothing?

  661. In other words,

  662. does he trust you

  663. for no reward?

  664. You've put a hedge

  665. around him.

  666. You've blessed him.

  667. You've protected him.

  668. You've made sure

  669. that nothing wrong

  670. can happen to him.

  671. Take that hedge

  672. of protection away.

  673. Withdraw your hand.

  674. Let him suffer

  675. for a bit.

  676. Let him go

  677. through hardship

  678. and you will see

  679. he will curse you

  680. to your face.

  681. Satan says,

  682. Job doesn't love you.

  683. He doesn't serve you

  684. because he really

  685. honors you

  686. or treasures you.

  687. He serves you

  688. because you serve him.

  689. And as long as

  690. you serve him,

  691. he will keep on

  692. serving you.

  693. Satan says,

  694. as long as you're

  695. good to him,

  696. he will be good to you.

  697. But Job doesn't

  698. actually love you.

  699. He just loves,

  700. he's just using you.

  701. This is why

  702. he's devoted.

  703. He doesn't love you.

  704. He loves the things

  705. that you give him.

  706. He doesn't truly

  707. treasure you.

  708. No, he loves

  709. the treasures

  710. that come his way

  711. because he serves you.

  712. Job doesn't really

  713. honor you

  714. or think you are

  715. worthy of worship.

  716. No, he is faithful

  717. because faithfulness

  718. gets him

  719. certain results.

  720. And so Satan says,

  721. remove your blessings

  722. from his life.

  723. Let him suffer

  724. and come to difficulty.

  725. Pain and heartache

  726. will come his way

  727. and he will curse

  728. you to your face.

  729. Now friends,

  730. it's a profound

  731. question that

  732. the Satan asks,

  733. right?

  734. It's a question

  735. that we need

  736. to ask ourselves.

  737. Friends,

  738. do we truly

  739. love God

  740. or do we simply

  741. love the benefits

  742. that come our way

  743. from serving him?

  744. Do we truly

  745. treasure him

  746. or do we treasure him

  747. simply because

  748. we think

  749. that doing so

  750. will allow him

  751. to bless us,

  752. cause him to bless us?

  753. Friends,

  754. do we adore God

  755. or do we simply

  756. use him?

  757. Satan says that

  758. Job is someone

  759. who simply uses God

  760. for the good things

  761. that God will give him

  762. and bless him.

  763. And so God

  764. amazingly

  765. gives Satan

  766. permission

  767. to test,

  768. to tent,

  769. and to taunt Satan

  770. and to allow

  771. hardship to come

  772. his way.

  773. Now,

  774. before we continue,

  775. a couple of things

  776. to think about here.

  777. This raises all sorts

  778. of questions,

  779. right?

  780. Especially about this

  781. character,

  782. the Satan.

  783. I mean,

  784. who is this guy

  785. and what's going on

  786. with this?

  787. Well,

  788. there's a lot here

  789. that's not particularly

  790. clear.

  791. Whether he's the same

  792. character as the rest

  793. of the Bible calls

  794. the Satan or not,

  795. we're not sure.

  796. I think he is.

  797. But here are a couple

  798. of things to think about.

  799. One thing,

  800. it's clear that

  801. Satan is certainly

  802. not as smart

  803. as we generally

  804. think he is.

  805. We tend to think

  806. of the Satan

  807. as this omniscient,

  808. all-knowing,

  809. powerful being.

  810. But look,

  811. there's actually

  812. a whole lot

  813. that he doesn't know.

  814. He doesn't know

  815. what's going on

  816. inside Job's heart.

  817. He says,

  818. this is what's going

  819. on inside Job's heart.

  820. And he's completely wrong.

  821. He doesn't know

  822. the future.

  823. He says,

  824. listen,

  825. if you do this,

  826. this is what's going

  827. to happen.

  828. Just like you said

  829. in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  830. And yet he's

  831. completely wrong.

  832. So Satan

  833. is certainly

  834. not as smart

  835. as we sometimes

  836. think he is.

  837. He doesn't know

  838. what's going on

  839. with Job

  840. and he doesn't

  841. know the future.

  842. But also,

  843. he's not as powerful

  844. as we tend

  845. to think he is.

  846. Satan is

  847. on a chain.

  848. God gives him

  849. certain latitude.

  850. God allows him

  851. to inflict injury

  852. on Job.

  853. But notice,

  854. he can affect

  855. Job's circumstances

  856. if God allows,

  857. but he cannot

  858. touch Job's heart.

  859. He is not

  860. the master

  861. of Job's destiny.

  862. He is not

  863. the captain

  864. of his fate.

  865. Friends,

  866. Satan can test us,

  867. he can tempt us,

  868. he can taunt us,

  869. he can lie to us,

  870. but he cannot

  871. make you do anything.

  872. He has no power

  873. over your heart,

  874. over your decisions.

  875. He does not

  876. control your life.

  877. And the reason

  878. is because thirdly,

  879. Satan is not

  880. equal to God.

  881. Friends,

  882. the spiritual realm

  883. of the Bible

  884. is not yin and yang,

  885. of two cosmic beings

  886. battling it out

  887. for the good

  888. of the world.

  889. There is a God

  890. and he is sovereign

  891. and he rules

  892. the world.

  893. And there is

  894. a created being,

  895. a fallen angel

  896. called the Satan.

  897. And yes,

  898. he is a rival

  899. to God in sense

  900. that he wants

  901. to bring down

  902. his kingdom

  903. and draw people

  904. away from,

  905. but God

  906. has no equals.

  907. He has no rivals.

  908. Satan is a

  909. fallen created being

  910. who will one day

  911. be consigned

  912. to an eternity

  913. in the lake of fire

  914. which is always burning

  915. but never consuming.

  916. And so friends,

  917. do not fear the Satan.

  918. Do not be anxious

  919. or worried about him.

  920. He is not in control

  921. of your life.

  922. Submit to God.

  923. Surrender to God.

  924. He is the only one

  925. who is all powerful.

  926. Satan does not own you.

  927. He does not control you.

  928. He is not all-knowing.

  929. He is not all-powerful.

  930. He is not God's equal.

  931. And so what happens

  932. is God says to Satan,

  933. okay,

  934. Job is in your hands

  935. to a limited extent.

  936. You can cause difficulty,

  937. pain,

  938. and suffering

  939. to come his way

  940. but do not touch him.

  941. And what happens next

  942. is maybe apart

  943. from Good Friday,

  944. one of the most dreadful days

  945. in the history

  946. of the world.

  947. First,

  948. the Sabians,

  949. this dreadful nation

  950. from the north,

  951. come and attack

  952. Job's,

  953. his oxen,

  954. his donkeys,

  955. his wealth,

  956. his portfolio

  957. of animals

  958. is wiped out.

  959. While he's hearing

  960. the report of this,

  961. a fire falls from heaven,

  962. possibly lightning,

  963. and wipes out

  964. a second part

  965. of his portfolio.

  966. His sheepfold

  967. and all his servants

  968. are killed.

  969. While he's hearing

  970. the report of this,

  971. his manager

  972. is busy giving him

  973. the bad news,

  974. another messenger

  975. comes in

  976. and says,

  977. this other part

  978. of your portfolio,

  979. your thousands

  980. of camels

  981. are all killed

  982. and so are your servants

  983. at the hands

  984. of the Chaldeans.

  985. And just when Job

  986. thinks things

  987. couldn't get

  988. any possibly worse,

  989. the final servant

  990. comes in

  991. and says,

  992. natural disaster

  993. is struck

  994. and all your children

  995. have been killed

  996. and all your servants

  997. and I alone

  998. am left.

  999. And friends,

  1000. suddenly everything

  1001. that is precious

  1002. to Job

  1003. and everything

  1004. that makes Job

  1005. a great man

  1006. and everything

  1007. makes his life

  1008. worthwhile

  1009. and worth living

  1010. in one miserable

  1011. and disastrous day

  1012. is taken from him.

  1013. It all comes

  1014. crashing down.

  1015. It's like the music

  1016. in the playground

  1017. in Disney Park

  1018. suddenly comes

  1019. to a screeching halt.

  1020. The rides come

  1021. to a grinding halt

  1022. or the laughter

  1023. and the joy

  1024. fade out

  1025. in the background

  1026. and Job

  1027. goes from looking

  1028. at this happy scene

  1029. to staring

  1030. into the abyss

  1031. of darkness

  1032. and hell itself.

  1033. And the point

  1034. that the writer

  1035. of Job

  1036. wants to make

  1037. is that

  1038. the end

  1039. of Job chapter 1

    Job 1 chapter mention

  1040. couldn't possibly

  1041. be more different

  1042. from its beginning.

  1043. In the beginning

  1044. we have this blessed

  1045. and prosperous

  1046. and happy

  1047. and wonderful man

  1048. and at the end

  1049. we have a man

  1050. who is marked

  1051. with shame

  1052. and disgrace

  1053. and despised.

  1054. And the point

  1055. is why is this?

  1056. Is it because

  1057. Job is secretly

  1058. in his heart

  1059. a wicked man?

1060. Is it that he is

1061. reaping what he has sown?

  1062. No, the point

  1063. is just the opposite.

  1064. It's not because

  1065. he's a bad man

  1066. it's because

  1067. he's such a righteous man.

  1068. If Job was somehow

  1069. harboring some evil

  1070. or darkness

  1071. in his life

  1072. the whole story

  1073. wouldn't make sense.

  1074. It's precisely

  1075. because he's such

  1076. a good man

  1077. because he's so

  1078. God-fearing

  1079. and righteous

  1080. that the story

  1081. makes sense.

  1082. That Satan

  1083. can allow this

  1084. to happen.

  1085. Job's suffering

  1086. is simply

  1087. beyond comprehension.

  1088. And so look

  1089. at verse 20.

  1090. Job hears

  1091. the report of this

  1092. and it says

  1093. Job rose

  1094. and tore

  1095. his robe

  1096. perhaps symbolizing

  1097. the tearing

  1098. that is taking place

  1099. in his heart.

  1100. He shaves his head

1101. as a sign of mourning

  1102. and an identification

  1103. with the dead

  1104. and he falls

  1105. on the ground.

  1106. And so friends

  1107. let me ask you

  1108. have you ever

  1109. gone through

  1110. a dark night

  1111. of the soul

  1112. where everything

  1113. that was precious

  1114. and good

  1115. was taken from you?

  1116. Friends

  1117. have you ever

  1118. found yourselves

  1119. so crushed

  1120. and compressed

  1121. by the weight

  1122. of pain

  1123. and agony

  1124. and desperation

  1125. having nowhere

  1126. to turn

  1127. and nothing

  1128. to hold on to

  1129. that it seems

  1130. like the insides

  1131. were going to burst.

  1132. Friends

  1133. maybe you've

  1134. had to bury

  1135. a child.

  1136. It's not the way

  1137. it should happen.

  1138. Children should bury

  1139. their parents.

  1140. Friends

  1141. maybe you've watched

  1142. a loved one

  1143. being eaten alive

  1144. by cancer

  1145. until you eventually

  1146. had to say goodbye.

  1147. Friends

  1148. have you been

  1149. unfairly accused

  1150. sidelined

  1151. ridiculed

  1152. have your name

  1153. tarnished

  1154. dragged through

  1155. the mud

  1156. your reputation

  1157. your career

  1158. destroyed

  1159. unfairly

  1160. unjustly

  1161. and how

  1162. did we respond?

  1163. How do we respond?

  1164. This is the question

  1165. that Job

  1166. is asking us.

  1167. When we are

  1168. unrighteously

  1169. and unfairly

  1170. and unjustly

  1171. brought to our knees

  1172. how will we respond?

  1173. Well I must confess

  1174. that I have not

  1175. experienced

  1176. many of those things

  1177. not to the level

  1178. that many of you

  1179. have this morning

  1180. but let's look

  1181. at how Job responds.

  1182. Look at verse 20.

  1183. Job arose

1184. and he tore his robe

  1185. he shaved his head

  1186. he fell down

  1187. onto the ground

  1188. and he

  1189. worshipped.

  1190. he worshipped.

  1191. Friends

  1192. how few

  1193. of us

  1194. find worship

  1195. to be our first

  1196. reaction

  1197. even at the best

  1198. of times.

  1199. Many of us

  1200. struggle to worship

  1201. even when it's all

  1202. laid out for us

1203. and all we have to do

  1204. is just arrive.

1205. And here is a man

  1206. who is staring

  1207. in the face

  1208. a multitude

  1209. of losses

  1210. and bereavements

  1211. who's been

  1212. utterly stripped

  1213. of everything

  1214. that's precious

  1215. to him

  1216. and is walking

  1217. through loss

  1218. after loss

  1219. after loss

  1220. and his first

  1221. response

  1222. is to lift

  1223. his eyes

  1224. God would

  1225. and somehow

  1226. whether out of

  1227. instinct

  1228. or discipline

  1229. or maybe

  1230. just sheer

  1231. desperation

  1232. he falls on

  1233. his knees

  1234. and he

  1235. worships.

  1236. And when it says

  1237. he worships

  1238. I don't think

  1239. that means

  1240. he belts

  1241. out a worship

  1242. song.

  1243. I think

  1244. it means

  1245. that he

  1246. somehow

  1247. finds the

  1248. strength

  1249. to out of

  1250. the words

  1251. of his mouth

  1252. and out of

  1253. his mind

  1254. if not yet

  1255. his heart

  1256. to say

  1257. God

  1258. you are God

  1259. and you are

  1260. worthy of

  1261. adoration

  1262. and reverence.

  1263. It's

  1264. shockingly

  1265. provocative

  1266. and challenging

  1267. and C.S. Lewis

  1268. I don't have

  1269. the exact quote

  1270. to paraphrase him

  1271. in his book

  1272. The Screwtape

  1273. Letters

  1274. says

  1275. there is nothing

  1276. so dangerous

  1277. to the cause

  1278. of Satan

  1279. as when a person

  1280. no longer

  1281. desiring

  1282. but still

  1283. attending

  1284. to do

  1285. God's will

  1286. looks round

  1287. upon a universe

  1288. in which

  1289. every trace

  1290. of God

  1291. seems to have

  1292. vanished

  1293. and asks

  1294. why he has

  1295. been utterly

  1296. forsaken

  1297. and yet

  1298. still trusts

  1299. and obeys.

  1300. Friends

  1301. one of the things

  1302. that the Bible

  1303. tells us

  1304. is that

  1305. if you live

  1306. long enough

  1307. you will

  1308. suffer

  1309. tremendously

  1310. and every

  1311. one of us

  1312. will go

  1313. through some

  1314. kind of

  1315. dark night

  1316. of the soul

  1317. we are

  1318. looking

  1319. around

  1320. the universe

  1321. upon us

  1322. it will

  1323. seem

  1324. as if

  1325. every trace

  1326. of God

  1327. has vanished

  1328. where God

  1329. is silent

  1330. and the world

  1331. seems amuck

  1332. with injustice

  1333. and pain

  1334. and heartache

  1335. and God

  1336. will seem

  1337. either not

  1338. to care

  1339. or not

  1340. to be able

  1341. to do

  1342. anything

  1343. about it

  1344. and in

  1345. those moments

  1346. the question

  1347. that Job

  1348. asks us

  1349. is

  1350. how will

  1351. we respond

  1352. how will

  1353. we respond

  1354. Job

  1355. arose

  1356. and tore

  1357. his robe

  1358. shaved

  1359. his hair

  1360. fell

  1361. to his

  1362. knees

  1363. and worshipped

  1364. verse 21

  1365. he says

  1366. naked I

  1367. came from

  1368. my mother's

  1369. womb

  1370. naked I

  1371. shall return

  1372. the Lord

  1373. gave and the

  1374. Lord has

  1375. taken away

  1376. blessed

  1377. means praise

  1378. blessed be

  1379. the name

  1380. of the Lord

  1381. in all this

  1382. Job did not

  1383. sin or charge

  1384. God with

  1385. wrong

  1386. it's an

  1387. unbelievable

  1388. conclusion

  1389. to the

  1390. most shocking

  1391. story

  1392. except it's

  1393. not the

  1394. conclusion

  1395. it's only

  1396. half way

  1397. and the

  1398. book of

  1399. Job is

  1400. going to

  1401. keep on

  1402. shocking

  1403. us for

  1404. another

  1405. 41

  1406. chapters

  1407. it's

  1408. going to

  1409. be an

  1410. emotional

  1411. rollercoaster

  1412. of the

  1413. next

  1414. seven

  1415. weeks

  1416. and so

  1417. Job

    Job 2 chapter mention

  1418. chapter 2

  1419. starts off

  1420. the same

  1421. way

  1422. we are

  1423. back in

  1424. heaven

  1425. and God

  1426. is meeting

  1427. with his

  1428. council of

  1429. angels

  1430. at some

  1431. point

  1432. God

  1433. sees

  1434. Satan

  1435. and he

  1436. says

  1437. Satan

  1438. come over

  1439. here

  1440. and talk

  1441. to us

  1442. for a

  1443. second

  1444. he says

  1445. have you

  1446. considered

  1447. my servant

  1448. Job

  1449. that upright

  1450. and blameless

  1451. man

  1452. who

  1453. trusts God

  1454. and honors

  1455. him

  1456. he still

  1457. holds to his

  1458. integrity

  1459. though you

  1460. incited me

  1461. against him

  1462. to destroy

  1463. him

  1464. without

  1465. reason

  1466. Satan

  1467. you father

  1468. of lies

  1469. says God

  1470. your cynical

  1471. ignorance

  1472. has found

  1473. you out

  1474. you thought

  1475. you knew

  1476. Job

  1477. you thought

  1478. you could

  1479. turn him

  1480. against me

  1481. you thought

  1482. his devotion

  1483. depended on

  1484. his circumstances

  1485. but you

  1486. were wrong

  1487. for you

  1488. are always

  1489. wrong

  1490. Satan

  1491. and even

  1492. after you

  1493. did that

  1494. even after

  1495. I allowed

  1496. you to

  1497. nearly

  1498. destroy

  1499. him

  1500. still

  1501. he

  1502. worships

  1503. so the

  1504. Satan

  1505. goes again

  1506. he says

  1507. oh that's

  1508. because you

  1509. haven't really

  1510. allowed me

  1511. to touch

  1512. him

  1513. you only

  1514. allowed me

  1515. to touch

  1516. him on

  1517. a surface

  1518. level

  1519. skin for

  1520. skin

  1521. which is

  1522. a shocking

  1523. statement

  1524. as if that

  1525. didn't penetrate

  1526. deeply

  1527. allow me to

  1528. really hurt

  1529. him

  1530. and then

  1531. you'll see

  1532. he'll curse

  1533. you to

  1534. your face

  1535. and Christopher

  1536. Ash points

  1537. out that if

  1538. we were

  1539. writing the

  1540. book of

  1541. Job

  1542. or if

  1543. we were

  1544. God

  1545. we would

  1546. have said

  1547. that's

  1548. enough

  1549. enough

  1550. is enough

  1551. the man

  1552. has suffered

  1553. more than

  1554. anyone else

  1555. in one day

  1556. he has

  1557. suffered

  1558. tremendously

  1559. no more

  1560. Satan

  1561. be banished

  1562. but we're

  1563. not God

  1564. and that's

  1565. the point

  1566. and one of

  1567. the things

  1568. we're going

  1569. to learn

  1570. again and

  1571. again

  1572. in the book

  1573. of Job

  1574. is that

  1575. we are

  1576. not God

  1577. and God

  1578. does not

  1579. act like

  1580. us

  1581. and so

  1582. God

  1583. agrees

  1584. to allow

  1585. Satan

  1586. to strike

  1587. Job

  1588. once again

  1589. more intensely

  1590. and more

  1591. intimately

  1592. than before

  1593. and so

  1594. verse 7

  1595. of chapter 2

  1596. Satan

  1597. went out

  1598. from the

  1599. presence

  1600. of the

  1601. Lord

  1602. and struck

  1603. Job

  1604. with loathsome

  1605. sores

  1606. from the

  1607. sole of

  1608. his foot

  1609. to the

  1610. crown of

  1611. his head

  1612. a total

  1613. and intimate

  1614. suffering

  1615. all of

  1616. Job's

  1617. personhood

  1618. is invaded

  1619. with this

  1620. suffering

  1621. and verse

  1622. 8

  1623. Job

  1624. goes out

  1625. in the

  1626. rubbish

  1627. heap

  1628. of the

  1629. city

  1630. he takes

  1631. a piece

  1632. of broken

  1633. pottery

  1634. scrapes

  1635. himself

  1636. and he

  1637. sits

  1638. in the

  1639. ashes

  1640. and as if

  1641. Job

  1642. hasn't

  1643. suffered

  1644. enough

  1645. now

  1646. the

  1647. person

  1648. closest

  1649. to him

  1650. his wife

  1651. turns to

  1652. him

  1653. and says

  1654. curse

  1655. God

  1656. and die

  1657. curse

  1658. God

  1659. and die

  1660. but in

  1661. all this

  1662. Job

  1663. did not

  1664. sin

  1665. friends

  1666. what do

  1667. we do

  1668. with

  1669. Job

  1670. chapter

  1671. one

  1672. and

  1673. two

  1674. well

  1675. one of

  1676. the

  1677. things

  1678. as I

  1679. said

  1680. earlier

  1681. the

  1682. book

  1683. of

  1684. Job

  1685. doesn't

  1686. actually

  1687. give us

  1688. many

  1689. answers

  1690. and even

  1691. when he

  1692. gets

  1693. right

  1694. to the

  1695. end

  1696. God

  1697. does

  1698. not

  1699. answer

  1700. many

  1701. of

  1702. Job's

  1703. questions

  1704. and

  1705. that's

  1706. deeply

  1707. provocative

  1708. and

  1709. challenging

  1710. it's

  1711. offensive

  1712. it's

  1713. gut

  1714. wrenching

  1715. it's

  1716. confrontational

  1717. so what

  1718. are we

  1719. meant to

  1720. do

  1721. with

  1722. it

  1723. well

  1724. I

  1725. think

  1726. coming

  1727. back

  1728. to what

  1729. I said

  1730. in the

  1731. beginning

  1732. the

  1733. book

  1734. of

  1735. Job

  1736. asks

  1737. us

  1738. this

  1739. question

  1740. when

  1741. God

  1742. and

  1743. his

  1744. ways

  1745. seem

  1746. deeply

  1747. unjust

  1748. unfair

  1749. and

  1750. make

  1751. no

  1752. sense

  1753. when

  1754. God

  1755. allows

  1756. severe

  1757. hardship

  1758. to

  1759. come

  1760. our

  1761. way

  1762. and

  1763. it

  1764. seems

  1765. that

  1766. God

  1767. leaves

  1768. us

  1769. and

  1770. is

  1771. abandoned

  1772. us

  1773. what

  1774. will

  1775. we

  1776. do

  1777. will

  1778. we

  1779. shake

  1780. our

  1781. fists

  1782. at

  1783. the

  1784. heavens

  1785. and

  1786. walk

  1787. away

  1788. will

  1789. we

  1790. accuse

  1791. God

  1792. or

  1793. will

  1794. we

  1795. somehow

  1796. turn

  1797. our

  1798. eyes

  1799. heaven

  1800. would

  1801. and

  1802. say

  1803. God

  1804. I

  1805. do

  1806. not

  1807. understand

  1808. I

  1809. do

  1810. not

  1811. know

  1812. why

  1813. you

  1814. are

  1815. doing

  1816. the

  1817. things

  1818. you

  1819. do

  1820. but

  1821. one

  1822. thing

  1823. I

  1824. know

  1825. is

  1826. you

  1827. are

  1828. God

  1829. and

  1830. I

  1831. am

  1832. not

  1833. and

  1834. I

  1835. will

  1836. let

  1837. you

  1838. be

  1839. God

  1840. and

  1841. so

  1842. what

  1843. are we

  1844. to

  1845. do

  1846. with

  1847. this

  1848. well

  1849. Job

  1850. asks

  1851. us

  1852. one

  1853. question

  1854. and

  1855. that

  1856. is

  1857. the

  1858. question

  1859. how

  1860. will

  1861. we

  1862. respond

  1863. when

  1864. God's

  1865. ways

  1866. seem

  1867. unjust

  1868. friends

  1869. when

  1870. we

  1871. read

  1872. God's

  1873. word

  1874. and

  1875. it

  1876. offends

  1877. us

  1878. and

  1879. it

  1880. challenges

  1881. us

  1882. when

  1883. God's

  1884. ways

  1885. go

  1886. against

  1887. how

  1888. you

  1889. feel

  1890. what

  1891. must

  1892. be

  1893. right

  1894. with

  1895. the

  1896. world

  1897. will

  1898. you

  1899. curse

  1900. God

  1901. and

  1902. die

  1903. will

  1904. you

  1905. shake

  1906. your

  1907. fist

  1908. at

  1909. God

  1910. and

  1911. walk

  1912. out

  1913. or

  1914. will

  1915. you

  1916. somehow

  1917. resolve

  1918. out

  1919. of

  1920. desperation

  1921. better

  1922. still

  1923. out

  1924. of

  1925. faith

  1926. to

  1927. will

  1928. you

  1929. find

  1930. it

  1931. in

  1932. your

  1933. heart

  1934. to

  1935. trust

  1936. him

  1937. to

  1938. worship

  1939. him

  1940. to

  1941. obey

  1942. him

  1943. will

  1944. you

  1945. let

  1946. God

  1947. be

  1948. God

  1949. the

  1950. question

  1951. that

  1952. Job

  1953. asks

  1954. us

  1955. but

  1956. maybe

  1957. you're

  1958. thinking

  1959. Kevin

  1960. you've

  1961. got to

  1962. be

  1963. out

  1964. of

  1965. your

  1966. mind

  1967. right

  1968. after

  1969. all

  1970. we've

  1971. read

  1972. this

  1973. morning

  1974. how

  1975. on

  1976. earth

  1977. why

  1978. would

  1979. I

  1980. ever

  1981. trust

  1982. God

  1983. and

  1984. that's

  1985. a

  1986. good

  1987. question

  1988. and

  1989. the

  1990. God

  1991. hasn't

  1992. left

  1993. us

  1994. in

  1995. the

  1996. dark

  1997. in

  1998. fact

  1999. he's

  2000. given

  2001. us

  2002. his

  2003. Bible

  2004. he's

  2005. given

  2006. us

  2007. his

  2008. word

  2009. so

  2010. that

  2011. though

  2012. we

  2013. may

  2014. not

  2015. have

  2016. the

  2017. answer

  2018. to

  2019. every

  2020. question

  2021. one

  2022. thing

  2023. we

  2024. do

  2025. know

  2026. is

  2027. that

  2028. God

  2029. is

  2030. in

  2031. heaven

  2032. and

  2033. he

  2034. is

  2035. God

  2036. and

  2037. we

  2038. can

  2039. hold

  2040. on

  2041. to

  2042. him

  2043. remember

  2044. Isaiah

  2045. 55

  2046. I

  2047. think

  2048. it

  2049. is

  2050. it

  2051. says

  2052. my

  2053. ways

  2054. are

  2055. infinitely

  2056. higher

  2057. than

  2058. your

  2059. ways

  2060. my

  2061. thoughts

  2062. are

  2063. we

  2064. would

  2065. have

  2066. been

  2067. left

  2068. in

  2069. the

  2070. dark

  2071. but

  2072. he

  2073. tells

  2074. us

  2075. that

  2076. not

  2077. because

  2078. he's

  2079. going

  2080. to

  2081. give

  2082. us

  2083. every

  2084. answer

  2085. he

  2086. tells

  2087. us

  2088. that

  2089. so

  2090. that

  2091. when

  2092. it

  2093. feels

  2094. like

  2095. we

  2096. are

  2097. walking

  2098. in

  2099. the

  2100. dark

  2101. we

  2102. can

  2103. hold

  2104. on

  2105. to

  2106. him

  2107. and

  2108. we

  2109. can

  2110. say

  2111. God

  2112. I

  2113. do

  2114. not

  2115. understand

  2116. your

  2117. ways

  2118. I

  2119. do

  2120. not

  2121. understand

  2122. your

  2123. thoughts

  2124. but

  2125. one

  2126. thing

  2127. I

  2128. know

  2129. is

  2130. that

  2131. you

  2132. are

  2133. God

  2134. and

  2135. I

  2136. am

  2137. not

  2138. and

  2139. we

  2140. can

  2141. hold

  2142. on

  2143. to

  2144. him

  2145. and

  2146. so

  2147. friends

  2148. when

  2149. God's

  2150. ways

  2151. are

  2152. traveling

  2153. and

  2154. challenging

  2155. and

  2156. difficulty

  2157. the

  2158. reason

  2159. that

  2160. we

  2161. have

  2162. the

  2163. Bible

  2164. is

  2165. so

  2166. that

  2167. deconstruction

  2168. and

  2169. doubt

  2170. and

  2171. walking

  2172. away

  2173. from

  2174. God

  2175. is

  2176. not

  2177. the

  2178. only

  2179. option

  2180. left

  2181. to

  2182. us

  2183. God

  2184. doesn't

  2185. give us

  2186. the

  2187. Bible

  2188. just

  2189. to

  2190. entertain

  2191. us

  2192. or

  2193. to

  2194. scold

  2195. us

  2196. for

  2197. not

  2198. being

  2199. as

  2200. good

  2201. as

  2202. Job

  2203. but

  2204. calls

  2205. us

  2206. to

  2207. trust

  2208. in

  2209. God

  2210. like

  2211. Job

  2212. did

  2213. and

  2214. to

  2215. trust

  2216. in

  2217. the

  2218. God

  2219. that

  2220. Job

  2221. did

  2222. trust

  2223. in

  2224. and

  2225. so

  2226. friends

  2227. as

  2228. we

  2229. read

  2230. this

  2231. book

  2232. of

  2233. Job

  2234. it's

  2235. going

  2236. to

  2237. be

  2238. challenging

  2239. but

  2240. let's

  2241. cry

  2242. out

  2243. to

  2244. God

  2245. to

  2246. give

  2247. us

  2248. the

  2249. faith

  2250. to

  2251. trust

  2252. him

  2253. as

  2254. Job

  2255. did

  2256. Job

  2257. didn't

  2258. have

  2259. a

  2260. Bible

  2261. and

  2262. he

  2263. didn't

  2264. know

  2265. about

  2266. the

  2267. conversation

  2268. in

  2269. heaven

  2270. but

  2271. we

  2272. do

  2273. and

  2274. so

  2275. let's

  2276. trust

  2277. him

  2278. secondly

  2279. Job

  2280. didn't

  2281. know

  2282. about

  2283. the

  2284. gospel

  2285. and

  2286. he

  2287. didn't

  2288. know

  2289. about

  2290. Jesus

  2291. but

  2292. we

  2293. do

  2294. and

  2295. so

  2296. let's

  2297. trust

  2298. him

  2299. now

  2300. the

  2301. cross

  2302. of

  2303. Jesus

  2304. Christ

  2305. is

  2306. not

  2307. the

  2308. primarily

  2309. point

  2310. of

  2311. the

  2312. book

  2313. of

  2314. Job

  2315. but

  2316. it's

  2317. impossible

  2318. to

  2319. read

  2320. the

  2321. book

  2322. of

  2323. Job

  2324. without

  2325. seeing

  2326. in

  2327. it

  2328. the

  2329. shadows

  2330. of

  2331. the

  2332. truly

  2333. innocent

  2334. man

  2335. who

  2336. truly

  2337. suffered

  2338. friends

  2339. the

  2340. entire

  2341. Bible

  2342. revolves

  2343. around

  2344. the

  2345. one

  2346. righteous

  2347. man

  2348. the

  2349. one

  2350. innocent

  2351. man

  2352. who

  2353. was

  2354. infinitely

  2355. more

  2356. innocent

  2357. than

  2358. Job

  2359. and

  2360. yet

  2361. suffered

  2362. innocently

  2363. more

  2364. than

  2365. Job

  2366. ever

  2367. suffered

  2368. and

  2369. friends

  2370. Jesus

  2371. sacrificial

  2372. suffering

  2373. on the

  2374. cross

  2375. makes

  2376. no

  2377. sense

  2378. to us

  2379. and

  2380. to

  2381. many

  2382. in

  2383. the

  2384. world

  2385. for

  2386. those

  2387. of

  2388. us

  2389. who

  2390. are

  2391. Christians

  2392. who

  2393. have

  2394. come

  2395. to

  2396. love

  2397. and

  2398. trust

  2399. Jesus

  2400. and

  2401. see

  2402. him

  2403. for

  2404. who

  2405. he

  2406. is

  2407. the

  2408. suffering

  2409. servant

  2410. Jesus

  2411. the

  2412. Lord

  2413. it

  2414. gives

  2415. us

  2416. such

  2417. hope

  2418. and

  2419. such

  2420. confidence

  2421. but

  2422. for

  2423. most

  2424. of

  2425. the

  2426. world

  2427. a

  2428. naked

  2429. suffering

  2430. servant

  2431. hanging

  2432. on a

  2433. cross

  2434. as a

  2435. savior

  2436. is

  2437. utterly

  2438. scandalous

  2439. and

  2440. ridiculous

  2441. it

  2442. makes

  2443. no

  2444. sense

  2445. at

  2446. all

  2447. just

  2448. like

  2449. the

  2450. story

  2451. of

  2452. Job

  2453. and

  2454. yet

  2455. for

  2456. those

  2457. of

  2458. us

  2459. who

  2460. have

  2461. come

  2462. to

  2463. be

  2464. saved

  2465. by

  2466. it

  2467. is

  2468. our

  2469. hope

  2470. it

  2471. is

  2472. our

  2473. sure

  2474. foundation

  2475. it

  2476. is

  2477. an

  2478. anchor

  2479. for

  2480. the

  2481. soul

  2482. it

  2483. is

  2484. a

  2485. rock

  2486. upon

  2487. which

  2488. we

  2489. can

  2490. build

  2491. our

  2492. lives

  2493. Christ

  2494. the

  2495. sure

  2496. and

  2497. steady

  2498. anchor

  2499. while

  2500. the

  2501. tempest

  2502. rages

  2503. on

  2504. Christ

  2505. the

  2506. sure

  2507. and

  2508. steady

  2509. anchor

  2510. through

  2511. the

  2512. floods

  2513. of

  2514. doubt

  2515. and

  2516. unbelief

  2517. Christ

  2518. the

  2519. sure

  2520. and

  2521. steady

  2522. anchor

  2523. as

  2524. we

  2525. face

  2526. the

  2527. waves

  2528. of

  2529. death

  2530. friends

  2531. Job

  2532. didn't

  2533. know

  2534. about

  2535. the

  2536. suffering

  2537. servant

  2538. but

  2539. we

  2540. do

  2541. Job

  2542. didn't

  2543. know

  2544. that

  2545. Jesus

  2546. would

  2547. die

  2548. and

  2549. rise

  2550. again

  2551. and

  2552. promise

  2553. that

  2554. he

  2555. would

  2556. come

  2557. again

  2558. but

  2559. we

  2560. do

  2561. and

  2562. when

  2563. the

  2564. storms

  2565. of

  2566. life

  2567. seem

  2568. unbearable

  2569. and

  2570. when

  2571. life

  2572. has

  2573. more

  2574. questions

  2575. than

  2576. answers

  2577. and

  2578. when

  2579. we

  2580. have

  2581. nothing

  2582. to

  2583. hold

  2584. on

  2585. to

  2586. let

  2587. us

  2588. hold

  2589. on

  2590. to

  2591. Jesus

  2592. who

  2593. went

  2594. into

  2595. the

  2596. depth

  2597. of

  2598. hell

  2599. itself

  2600. on

  2601. our

  2602. behalf

  2603. for

  2604. us

  2605. and

  2606. came

  2607. out

  2608. the

  2609. other

  2610. side

  2611. and

  2612. let's

  2613. hold

  2614. on

  2615. to

  2616. him

  2617. and

  2618. so

  2619. dear

  2620. friends

  2621. Job

  2622. poses

  2623. the

  2624. question

  2625. when

  2626. life

  2627. hits

  2628. rock

  2629. bottom

  2630. and

  2631. God

  2632. seems

  2633. silent

  2634. how

  2635. will

  2636. we

  2637. respond

  2638. will

  2639. we

  2640. turn

  2641. our

  2642. backs

  2643. and

  2644. figure

  2645. out

  2646. life

  2647. on

  2648. our

  2649. own

  2650. or

  2651. will

  2652. we

  2653. somehow

  2654. find

  2655. it

  2656. in

  2657. our

  2658. hearts

  2659. to

  2660. turn

  2661. to

  2662. him

  2663. to

  2664. trust

  2665. him

  2666. to

  2667. obey

  2668. him

  2669. even

  2670. to

  2671. worship

  2672. let's

  2673. pray

  2674. Father

  2675. God

  2676. Job

    Job 1 chapter mention

  2677. chapter

  2678. 1

  2679. and

  2680. 2

  2681. leaves

  2682. us

  2683. this

  2684. morning

  2685. with

  2686. many

  2687. questions

  2688. it

  2689. leaves

  2690. our

  2691. hearts

  2692. wondering

  2693. but

  2694. God

  2695. it's

  2696. not

  2697. the

  2698. end

  2699. of

  2700. the

  2701. story

  2702. God

  2703. I

  2704. know

  2705. that

  2706. many

  2707. of

  2708. us

  2709. here

  2710. this

  2711. morning

  2712. may

  2713. feel

  2714. like

  2715. Job

  2716. in

  2717. the

  2718. storms

  2719. of

  2720. life

  2721. when

  2722. the

  2723. tempest

  2724. rages

  2725. on

  2726. God

  2727. I

  2728. pray

  2729. by

  2730. your

  2731. spirit

  2732. won't

  2733. you

  2734. draw

  2735. near

  2736. to

  2737. us

  2738. and

  2739. lift

  2740. our

  2741. eyes

  2742. and

  2743. see

  2744. Christ

  2745. our

  2746. sure

  2747. and

  2748. steady

  2749. anchor

  2750. father

  2751. when we

  2752. are

  2753. tempted

  2754. to give

  2755. up on

  2756. you

  2757. and to

  2758. take

  2759. the

  2760. reins

  2761. of our

  2762. life

  2763. and to

  2764. be our

  2765. own

  2766. God

  2767. lord

  2768. won't

  2769. you

  2770. draw

  2771. near

  2772. to

  2773. us

  2774. and

  2775. help

  2776. us

  2777. to turn

  2778. our

  2779. eyes

  2780. God

  2781. and

  2782. to

  2783. trust

  2784. you

  2785. father

  2786. I

  2787. pray

  2788. by

  2789. your

  2790. spirit

  2791. won't

  2792. you

  2793. draw

  2794. us

  2795. near

  2796. to

  2797. yourself

  2798. and

  2799. help

  2800. us

  2801. God

  2802. won't

  2803. you

  2804. give

  2805. us

  2806. faith

  2807. like

  2808. Job

  2809. won't

  2810. you

  2811. cause

  2812. us

  2813. God

  2814. in

  2815. the

  2816. storm

  2817. to

  2818. look

  2819. to

  2820. you

  2821. and

  2822. God

  2823. by

  2824. your

  2825. spirit

  2826. we

  2827. pray

  2828. won't

  2829. you

  2830. comfort

  2831. us

  2832. and

  2833. won't

  2834. you

  2835. give

  2836. us

  2837. hope

  2838. won't

  2839. you

  2840. cause

  2841. us

  2842. to

  2843. trust

  2844. to

  2845. obey

  2846. to

  2847. worship

  2848. in

  2849. your

  2850. name

  2851. we

  2852. pray

  2853. amen
