  1. Just bow our heads in prayer for a moment. Father, we like to have you do things in a way that suits us, that deals with our sort of unrecognized emotional neediness and our unrecognized self-centeredness.

  2. And Father, we like it when you act in a way that fits with us and pleases us. But Father, you're God, not us.

  3. And so Father, you are a God who bestows grace, that gives grace to sinners and to unredeemed sinners and to redeem sinners.

  4. And you continue to give us grace. And we are here today to be in your presence, to receive grace from your hands.

  5. And we ask, Lord, that you grant us open and hungry hearts to receive the grace from you this morning that we desperately need and to respond in a worthy manner.

  6. And Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would help us to do that.

  7. And we ask and thank all these things in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. Hope you don't mind me insulting you that you all, you and I all have unrecognized self-centeredness and neediness.

  10. But there, there you go.

  11. I've never been to a mosque.

  12. I mean, I've been outside of mosques, but I've never been to a mosque.

  13. Never gone inside it for, for one of their prayer services.

  14. I've been to a Buddhist wedding ceremony, but that Buddhist wedding ceremony was in a, was in a house, not a Buddhist temple.

  15. I've been to an anthroposophical dedication service in an anthroposophical church.

  16. And none of you have heard of anthroposophical, I'm going to get mixed up.

  17. Anyway, most of you have probably never heard of it.

  18. But the fact is, I haven't been to most of these places.

  19. I sort of know, or I think I know, what Muslims do in terms of the different prayers that they say.

  20. And they might gather for prayers.

  21. I don't know if it's one of those things, if I talk to a very devout Muslim watching something on TV,

  22. they'd say, no, no, that's not right, or that's not right.

  23. Or, you know, they're doing the morning prayer in the afternoon or something like that.

  24. I know that often television and movies get things about the Christian services not right.

  25. It's very common.

  26. And if anybody from Hollywood's listening, our congregation will release me to be a technical advisor periodically at good Hollywood rates,

  27. which will go to the church, Mission Fund, not to me, to help you get those things straight.

  28. Anyway, one of the things that if you're not that familiar with the Christian faith that you might know about Christians

  29. is that they do something, and some people call it the Mass, and some call it Holy Communion,

  30. and some call it the Eucharist, and some call it the Lord's Supper.

  31. And if you're like a Muslim or just a secular Canadian tuning in, or a Buddhist, or somebody with a bespoke spirituality,

  32. you might know those things.

  33. And, of course, Christians know that, and we're familiar with it.

  34. So this is actually a very different type of a sermon today, because what I read just a couple of minutes ago is where that comes from.

  35. It's where it comes from and sort of why it is that Christians do this, this thing called the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion.

  36. And so let's look at it.

  37. If you're just from an outsider trying to sort of figure out what we're all about, this is like a brilliant time.

  38. One of the main things that Christians do, we get the origin story, so to speak.

  39. And for us who are Christians, we don't talk about this enough.

  40. I probably don't talk about it enough, about what is the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion,

  41. and why it's significant, and what happens, and how we should do it.

  42. And so let's look.

  43. And if you were to take my preaching class, I would tell you never have seven points.

  44. I have seven points.

  45. So I'm going to flunk myself.

  46. But they're all very simple.

  47. And, in fact, actually, if you sort of want to hear them, here's the first thing.

  48. That what you're actually going to be surprised is that it's simple.

  49. It is simple.

  50. It is very simple.

  51. So let's turn in our Bibles to Mark chapter 14, verses 22 to 31.

    Mark 14:22–31

  52. There's sort of two stories there.

  53. The part that we're interested initially with is 22 to 25.

  54. Mark chapter 14, verses 22 to 25.

    Mark 14:22–25

  55. And what's just happened in the flow of this ancient eyewitness biography of Jesus is that just before this,

  56. we've had a bit of the fact that we've had Jesus and his disciples as observant Jews.

  57. They have been celebrating the Passover Supper.

  58. And at a key point in the third part of the Passover Supper, Jesus says to Judas that one of you will,

  59. not to all of them, one of you will betray me.

  60. And he never outs Judas.

  61. But he does say, woe to that man who betrays me.

  62. It would be better if he was never born.

  63. It was a very, very sobering moment.

  64. And that's what happens just before this.

  65. I talked about it last week if you're curious.

  66. It's a very sobering moment.

  67. And now this story happens.

  68. And here's how it goes.

  69. Verse 22.

  70. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread and after blessing it, broke it and gave it to them and said,

  71. Take, this is my body.

  72. And Jesus took a cup and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and they all drank of it.

  73. And he said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

  74. Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

  75. Now, some of you, maybe who are seekers, you go, Is that all?

  76. Like, isn't there more?

  77. And some of you might actually think it seems a bit lame.

  78. And some of you might think it seems a bit gross.

  79. This is my blood that you have to drink.

  80. It sounds like a vampire.

  81. And I'm going to return to that.

  82. The outside, how some people from the outside, it sounds, well, way too simple.

  83. It sounds a bit lame and it sounds a bit gross.

  84. But some of you who watch, and this might be for some of you, you heard me read this and you go,

  85. George, that's not what we say when we do a communion service.

  86. We say something different.

  87. Like, why did Jesus say this one thing here, but why do we say something different when we do,

  88. like in a few, later on we're going to do a communion service.

  89. Why is there this difference?

  90. And some of you who, you know, listen to some of the different YouTube things and TikTok things of ex-evangelicals

  91. and people who love the Christian faith and skeptics, they'll jump on this and go,

  92. aha, aha, you see that?

  93. This is why you can't trust the Bible, because it says different things.

  94. Like, they don't get it right.

  95. And a lot of times we don't know how to handle that when people say it.

  96. And actually, there's going to be an announcement about that that will help you later on.

  97. But what I'd like to say right now is something, just, it's a very important bit of a sidebar

  98. to help you understand what's, why it's different here than the other places

  99. and why you don't have to worry about it, but in fact should rejoice in it.

  100. There's a book that came out, I think within the last 12 months.

  101. I think at least two of you have read it, and it's about the founding of the denomination that we're in.

  102. And it's early days and bringing us sort of up to about the year 2021 or 2022.

  103. And what you might not know is that I actually got asked to write one of the chapters in the book as a memoir.

  104. And what I did is I covered the years 1994, a particular thing at the end of June 1994,

  105. to the end of August in 2004.

  106. And the reason they asked me, the editors and the compilers asked me to write this,

  107. is because our denomination was founded out of an organization called Essentials.

  108. And I was the chair of that organization from 1999 to 2004, to 1994 to 2004,

  109. when in 2004 it was announced that we had started this entity called the Anglican Network in Canada.

  110. I was the chair for that, for those 10 years.

  111. My wife, if you talk to her afterwards, she can say about all of the different scars I got from that process.

  112. But for that 11 years, I was at every single meeting, including the planning meetings.

  113. I was at every event.

  114. I didn't miss anything.

  115. And I was the chair and the organizer of many of those events.

  116. So they asked me to write a memoir about it.

  117. Now, and I wrote it.

  118. I did it because, and I didn't consult a whole pile of documents.

  119. It had been a very, very important time in my life.

  120. If I was writing, I guess, a very academic thing, I would have done a bit of research.

  121. But I didn't have to do research.

  122. I was there.

  123. I lived it all.

  124. And if I had to do some more research, if they wanted something more academic,

  125. I'd get on the phone.

  126. I'd call up Klaus.

  127. I'd get on the phone and call up Roger.

  128. I'd get on the phone and call up Cheryl and David and a couple of the other people

  129. who were at a lot of those things, not all of the things, but a lot of them.

  130. And we would compare notes to make it even more accurate.

  131. Now, I was just able to do this just out of my memory because I was actually there.

  132. Now, imagine, though, now somebody said,

  133. George, could you do a paper on those 10 years leading up to the start of the Anglican Church of Canada?

  134. Well, the Anglican Church of Canada, the first general synod, took place in 1893.

  135. I couldn't do that.

  136. I mean, I could do it, but I'd have to do what most of you would do.

  137. There's no obviously people left who were there.

  138. I'd have to look at written documents.

  139. And I'd have to try to compare the written documents.

  140. And when I wrote my piece, afterwards, people who were scholars of Canadian history,

  141. they might look and say, oh, George got this bit from here.

  142. And, oh, he didn't give a footnote there like he should have.

  143. And I'd never heard of this.

  144. I think George just made that up.

  145. And other scholars also looking at the other documents, they would be able to critique it.

  146. Now, why am I saying all of this?

  147. Because it's very, very important.

  148. Up until the later part of the 1800s,

  149. if you went back in a time machine and you asked an early church father

  150. or you asked somebody in the year 1500 or 1800, all smart people,

  151. they would just tell you that the Gospels are what is claimed,

  152. if you read the original documents, that they were eyewitness documents.

  153. And the eyewitnesses just report on what eyewitnesses had seen and talked about.

  154. In other words, they would have just said that when you were reading the Gospels,

  155. it's like reading my chapter in the book.

  156. You're hearing an eyewitness speak.

  157. But in the late 1800s, under the influence of a guy by the name of Hegel,

  158. a group of German scholars believed that they understood

  159. how religious movements developed according to Hegelian principles

  160. and how it took all of this long time and all of these steps.

  161. And they believed, because they were good Hegelians,

  162. that they understood how that worked.

  163. And, of course, if that model was going to work,

  164. then the New Testament couldn't be written by eyewitnesses.

  165. It had to be written 150, 200 years later,

  166. so that their Hegelian theory could work.

  167. Now, nobody dates the book as late as those German scholars in the late 1800s.

  168. Like, it sort of sucks to say that John was written in the year 200,

  169. then you find a document, a piece, a manuscript that shows

  170. that was written at least 80 years earlier.

  171. Like, that's sort of a defeater for the theory.

  172. But it's carried on and it's dragged on.

  173. And so often what happens is many scholars still basically think

  174. that what's happening is they're comparing documents.

  175. And so if the documents don't say the exact same thing,

  176. they say, well, that's been invented or something like that.

  177. But let's just take it that there's actually no evidence

  178. that it was written so late.

  179. And, in fact, I think there's very, very good evidence.

  180. And increasingly over time, they've been doing these remarkable studies

  181. about names and places and the frequency of names

  182. and how the customs are.

  183. Like, when they have very, very common names,

  184. you add an extra bit to it.

  185. Judas was a very, very common name, so they add a bit to it.

  186. Like, and it's amazing.

  187. The more they know about the past,

  188. the more accurate the New Testament is

  189. and the more accurate the Gospels are,

  190. the more likely it is that it had to be written by eyewitnesses

  191. and checked by eyewitnesses very close to the time.

  192. And that's just, like, as archaeologists and scholars

  193. learn more about the past,

  194. that just becomes increasingly the direction of modern knowledge.

  195. And so what we're seeing here is eyewitnesses.

  196. Now, how does that affect it being worded differently?

  197. Well, some of you have taken classes from Steve Griffin.

  198. And I bet you if you've taken some classes from Steve Griffin,

  199. he said some things the same in different lectures.

  200. Right?

  201. And if even in the same lecture,

  202. he probably just doesn't say it once, like he's a robot,

  203. but human beings often repeat things.

  204. And in this sermon, for instance,

  205. you might hear me say, for instance,

  206. that it is simple,

  207. or you might later on hear me say it's surprisingly simple,

  208. or it's unexpectedly simple.

  209. Those aren't contradictions.

  210. If one of you later on was saying,

  211. George's first point was, it is simple.

  212. Another person wrote down, it is surprisingly simple.

  213. Another person writes down, it is unexpectedly simple.

  214. And then later on, somebody said, you're all contradicting.

  215. No, you're not contradicting.

  216. George said all three of those things.

  217. So it's not as if it's just, you know,

  218. Jesus, like a robot,

  219. this is my body,

  220. and he's programmed to only say,

  221. this is my body.

  222. No.

  223. If you've received communion from me over the years,

  224. I've said a variety of different things.

  225. And in a talk,

  226. I might express the same idea several different ways,

  227. and they write it down that.

  228. That's all you're seeing.

  229. In fact, actually then,

  230. rather, it's actually a sign

  231. that it's more realistic about what actually human beings,

  232. what human beings actually do,

  233. and the differences are showing you

  234. a more realistic picture of how human beings actually function.

  235. that rather than being a defeater about the text,

  236. it's a reason to be more confident in the text.

  237. And there is absolutely no reason to think

  238. that the text is written as late

  239. as some scholars want to put it.

  240. And so if you look at the four different original accounts,

  241. three of them in the eyewitness biographies,

  242. one in Matthew,

  243. one in Mark,

  244. one in Luke,

  245. and then one written in an early letter,

  246. you'll see slightly different wordings,

  247. and that's reflected in how we do our liturgy.

  248. But what you can trust

  249. is that this goes right back to Jesus,

  250. and he institutes it.

  251. And it is surprisingly simple,

  252. but if you take in its very basic simplicity,

  253. it is profoundly beautiful.

  254. And part of the beauty is this.

  255. You know,

  256. let's look at it again.

  257. Verse 22,

  258. And as they were eating,

  259. he took bread,

  260. and after blessing it,

  261. broke it,

  262. and gave it to them,

  263. and said,

  264. Take, this is my body.

  265. In other places it says,

  266. Take and eat, this is my body.

  267. Or take and eat,

  268. this is my body given for you.

  269. And he took a cup,

  270. and when he had given thanks,

  271. he gave it to them,

  272. and they all drank it.

  273. And he said to them,

  274. This is my blood of the covenant,

  275. which is poured out for many.

  276. Truly I say to you,

  277. I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine

  278. until that day when I drink it new

  279. in the kingdom of God.

  280. You see,

  281. part of what's so beautiful about that

  282. is not only the words beautiful,

  283. which we're going to look at more in a moment.

  284. These very, very simple words

  285. can be said by Christian believers

  286. in Tehran or Shanghai,

  287. meeting in a room behind closed doors

  288. because of persecution.

  289. If you go to visit the missionaries

  290. you support in Angola

  291. and go to one of their church plants,

  292. these very simple words

  293. can be said under a tree

  294. in a village

  295. that in many ways

  296. still uses the farming techniques

  297. of 150 years ago.

  298. You can go to an ancient cathedral

  299. in Paris or England

  300. and you can hear these same words.

  301. Or you can be in the Ottawa Little Theatre

  302. on a Sunday morning

  303. and hear these same words.

  304. They are beautiful

  305. and they are profound

  306. and they are something

  307. that Christians

  308. in all sorts and conditions of life

  309. can partake of the Lord's Supper,

  310. the Holy Communion.

  311. Now, it's important to remember

  312. not just that it's simple

  313. but that it is in a story.

  314. These words of Jesus

  315. are in a story

  316. or an eyewitness biography.

  317. Listen to the words again.

  318. And as they were eating

  319. he took bread

  320. and after blessing it

  321. broke it

  322. and gave it to them

  323. and said,

  324. take, this is my body.

  325. And he took a cup

  326. and when he had given thanks

  327. he gave it to them

  328. and they all drank of it

  329. and he said to them,

  330. this is my blood of the covenant

  331. which is poured out for many.

  332. Truly I say to you

  333. I will not drink again

  334. of the fruit of the vine

  335. until that day

  336. when I drink it new

  337. in the kingdom of God.

  338. Now, I've talked to you

  339. you know, before

  340. I like watching movies

  341. by and large.

  342. I mean, a lot of movies

  343. are not very good

  344. but if I find a good movie

  345. I really like it.

  346. And one of the things

  347. that characterizes bad movies

  348. is they just stick things in randomly

  349. to try to make the movie

  350. more exciting

  351. or more titillating

  352. or create tension

  353. and it has nothing to do

  354. with the story.

  355. They just throw in a

  356. I don't know

  357. for some random reason

  358. the woman walking around

  359. in her underwear

  360. or they throw in

  361. an explosion

  362. or they throw in

  363. a hostile police examination

  364. but as the story goes on

  365. it has nothing to do

  366. with the story.

  367. You know, it was just simply

  368. put that somebody

  369. in Hollywood said

  370. oh, I don't want the people

  371. to fall asleep

  372. let's have the woman

  373. take her top off.

  374. Okay, oh, let's just

  375. have the police

  376. have a hostile investigation

  377. which we never follow up on

  378. and it has nothing to do

  379. with the story.

  380. Those are just crappy, right?

  381. They're crappy movies

  382. crappy stories.

  383. That's what they are.

  384. But in a good one

  385. in a well done one

  386. the different parts

  387. of the story

  388. help make the whole story work.

  389. And afterwards

  390. you know, you can ask

  391. when I mention a movie

  392. by the way

  393. I'm not recommending

  394. necessarily that you watch it

  395. but like if you watch

  396. the third season of Fargo

  397. and there's this

  398. random type of thing

  399. at the beginning

  400. that sets the whole thing off

  401. but if you look at it

  402. and you talk to other people

  403. who watch it

  404. they say, no, no

  405. that's really interesting

  406. because what they're doing

  407. is they're prefiguring this

  408. and prefiguring that

  409. and you go, oh yeah

  410. that's what they're doing.

  411. You actually have a discussion

  412. around it

  413. and see how it all fits together.

  414. So one of the things

  415. we can say for a fact

  416. is that people

  417. wouldn't read these stories

  418. continue to be reading

  419. these stories

  420. if they didn't have

  421. if they weren't

  422. well put together.

  423. If they were just

  424. crappy.

  425. And so we can ask

  426. not just

  427. you see

  428. and often when Christians

  429. disagree about communion

  430. what happens is

  431. they get caught up

  432. arguing about

  433. tradition

  434. or theology

  435. or philosophy

  436. and they forget

  437. that the words

  438. of institution

  439. that's what it's called

  440. are in a story

  441. and they don't go back

  442. to look at the story.

  443. Like

  444. why is it in this story?

  445. Like

  446. what's it doing

  447. in this story?

  448. And that's

  449. what we need to do.

  450. So you say

  451. okay well George

  452. what's going on?

  453. Why is this story here?

  454. Well let's listen

  455. to it again

  456. and as they were eating

  457. and he took bread

  458. and after blessing it

  459. broke it

  460. and gave it to them

  461. and said

  462. take this is my body

  463. or take and eat

  464. this is my body

  465. and he took a cup

  466. and when he had given thanks

  467. he gave it to them

  468. and they all drank of it

  469. and he said to them

  470. this is my blood

  471. of the covenant

  472. which is poured out

  473. for many

  474. truly I say to you

  475. I will not drink again

  476. of the fruit of the vine

  477. until that day

  478. when I drink it new

  479. in the kingdom of God.

  480. This

  481. is Jesus

  482. explaining

  483. and Mark

  484. recording it.

  485. Why does Mark

  486. record it?

  487. Because Mark

  488. understands afterwards

  489. that Jesus

  490. explains the story

  491. that you're reading

  492. and not only

  493. does he explain

  494. the story you're reading

  495. you see the story

  496. you're reading

  497. Mark

  498. explains the big story

  499. of the Bible

  500. and that's what Jesus

  501. is doing here.

  502. This

  503. is part of those

  504. there's several

  505. key sayings

  506. of Jesus

  507. throughout the gospel

  508. that explains the story

  509. gives you the purpose

  510. and the meaning

  511. of the story

  512. and what you see here

  513. is Jesus

  514. explaining the story

  515. which explains

  516. the big story.

  517. How does he do that?

  518. Well

  519. first of all

  520. as we went through it

  521. and I'm not going to

  522. reiterate it

  523. is the Jewish people

  524. they had a celebration

  525. called the Passover

  526. which celebrated

  527. how God

  528. had acted

  529. to deliver them

  530. from slavery

  531. and bondage

  532. in Egypt

  533. into

  534. freedom

  535. where he was

  536. to be their king

  537. the God

  538. and part of that

  539. is that

  540. the shedding

  541. of a blood

  542. of a lamb

  543. and if

  544. a Jewish family

  545. or any family

  546. was to shed

  547. the blood

  548. of a lamb

  549. an innocent lamb

  550. lay their hands

  551. on it

  552. the lamb

  553. is killed

  554. and the blood

  555. is taken

  556. and put in

  557. on the entrance

  558. of the house

  559. and if they stay

  560. inside

  561. then as God's

  562. judgment

  563. was going

  564. to pass over

  565. the nation

  566. of Egypt

  567. anybody

  568. who was in a sense

  569. covered

  570. by this

  571. the blood

  572. of the shed

  573. lamb

  574. and

  575. they were

  576. covered

  577. by that

  578. the judgment

  579. of God

  580. didn't fall

  581. on them

  582. it fell

  583. on the people

  584. committed

  585. to slavery

  586. and enslaving

  587. and believed

  588. it was their right

  589. and that was judged

  590. and they remembered

  591. that

  592. they still remember

  593. to this day

  594. our Jewish friends

  595. and so the first thing

  596. is that what's happening

  597. is that the Jewish people

  598. when they remembered it

  599. they had

  600. not just a

  601. not just a meal

  602. but they actually

  603. had to have

  604. certain types

  605. of food

  606. in the meal

  607. and the meal

  608. actually had four parts

  609. because part of it

  610. was retelling

  611. the story

  612. so that people

  613. would remember

  614. what God

  615. had done for them

  616. and part of it

  617. as well

  618. if you go back

  619. and look at

  620. the foundational

  621. text in Exodus

  622. and Leviticus

  623. and Deuteronomy

  624. they were also

  625. not just to retell

  626. the story

  627. of what God

  628. has done

  629. but to look

  630. forward to the day

  631. when the Messiah

  632. would come

  633. the final day

  634. and it's in that meal

  635. at the third part

  636. of the meal

  637. that Jesus

  638. interrupts the meal

  639. to do something

  640. and he takes

  641. the bread

  642. that they were

  643. using

  644. and they would

  645. have already

  646. eaten

  647. maybe it's

  648. towards the end

  649. of it

  650. and it would

  651. have been

  652. bread without

  653. leaven

  654. that's why

  655. we use

  656. wafers that

  657. have no

  658. leaven in them

  659. when we receive it

  660. and the cup

  661. would have been

  662. a cup of wine

  663. because that's

  664. what they would

  665. have drunk

  666. and so on one

  667. hand it's very

  668. significant that

  669. he's connecting

  670. me

  671. what's about

  672. to happen

  673. to this very

  674. ancient event

  675. and this ancient

  676. event that promises

  677. that sometime

  678. in the future

  679. the Messiah

  680. will come

  681. and the other

  682. thing that he's

  683. doing is

  684. as I tried

  685. to explain

  686. last week

  687. the Jewish

  688. people

  689. they begin

  690. their day

  691. at sundown

  692. we sort of

  693. begin our day

  694. technically

  695. at midnight

  696. or psychologically

  697. we think our day

  698. begins when we

  699. wake up in the

  700. morning

  701. but for the

  702. Jewish people

  703. still to this

  704. day

  705. the day

  706. begins

  707. when the night

  708. when sundown

  709. happens

  710. and the day

  711. ends

  712. with sundown

  713. and so

  714. what we're

  715. seeing here

  716. is we're

  717. seeing this

  718. unbelievably

  719. chaotic

  720. and packed

  721. 24 hour

  722. period

  723. that's all

  724. the very

  725. first day

  726. of the

  727. Passover

  728. and the

  729. story of

  730. the exodus

  731. and the

  732. promise of

  733. the Messiah

  734. and the

  735. remembering

  736. of the

  737. lamb

  738. that's been

  739. slain

  740. and how

  741. they're

  742. covered

  743. that's

  744. fully

  745. in their

  746. mind

  747. and in

  748. that 24

  749. hour

  750. period

  751. Jesus

  752. sacrifices

  753. a

  754. celebrates

  755. a Passover

  756. supper

  757. because he's

  758. an observant

  759. Jew

  760. he institutes

  761. the Lord's

  762. supper

  763. he's going

  764. to go to

  765. the garden

  766. of Gethsemane

  767. he's going

  768. to pray

  769. that God

  770. would take

  771. spare him

  772. from this

  773. hour

  774. but he's

  775. offering to

  776. drink the

  777. cup

  778. and we'll

  779. look at

  780. that next

  781. week

  782. we're going

  783. to see

  784. Judas

  785. betray him

  786. and he's

  787. going to

  788. be captured

  789. we're going

  790. to see him

  791. being taken

  792. to the

  793. different

  794. Jewish

  795. and all

  796. of the

  797. different

  798. authorities

  799. and how

  800. they ultimately

  801. just hand

  802. him over

  803. to death

  804. and we're

  805. going to

  806. see him

  807. stripped

  808. and we're

  809. going to

  810. see him

  811. whipped

  812. and humiliated

  813. and we're

  814. going to

  815. see him

  816. drag his

  817. cross

  818. through the

  819. streets

  820. we're going

  821. to see

  822. all of the

  823. apostles have

  824. fled

  825. and we're

  826. going to

  827. see him

  828. die on

  829. his arms

  830. and his

  831. feet nailed

  832. to a cross

  833. and we're

  834. going to

  835. see him

  836. die

  837. and we're

  838. going to

  839. see him

  840. say things

  841. from the

  842. cross

  843. before he

  844. dies

  845. and we're

  846. going to

  847. see that

  848. make sure

  849. that he's

  850. really dead

  851. we're going

  852. to see a

  853. spear piercing

  854. his side

  855. and blood

  856. and water

  857. flowing out

  858. and we're

  859. going to

  860. see before

  861. this 24

  862. hour period

  863. is over

  864. some men

  865. take him

  866. and they

  867. embalm him

  868. and they

  869. put him

  870. in a

  871. tomb

  872. and that's

  873. all going

  874. to happen

  875. in 24

  876. hours

  877. the first

  878. day of

  879. Passover

  880. and the

  881. people are

  882. running around

  883. and they're

  884. afraid

  885. and they're

  886. going to

  887. be hiding

  888. for a

  889. couple of

  890. days

  891. and then

  892. there's

  893. going to

  894. be this

  895. crazy

  896. crazy

  897. crazy

  898. thing

  899. where

  900. women

  901. good grief

  902. women

  903. in those

  904. days

  905. they say

  906. he's

  907. actually

  908. that the

  909. tomb

  910. is empty

  911. and that

  912. he's

  913. alive

  914. and he

  915. saw him

  916. and they're

  917. going to

  918. see that

  919. the tomb

  920. is empty

  921. and then

  922. later

  923. they're

  924. all going

  925. to see

  926. it

  927. but in

  928. that 24

  929. hour

  930. period

  931. what is

  932. Jesus

  933. doing

  934. he's

  935. giving them

  936. a 5,000

  937. feet in the

  938. air view

  939. of what's

  940. happening

  941. he's

  942. saying

  943. you see

  944. the Passover

  945. supper

  946. you see

  947. what's

  948. going to

  949. happen

  950. in the

  951. garden

  952. you see

  953. what's

  954. going to

  955. happen

  956. with the

  957. betrayal

  958. you see

  959. the trial

  960. you see

  961. my humiliation

  962. you see

  963. my being

  964. stripped

  965. naked

  966. you see

  967. the beatings

  968. you see

  969. my death

  970. you're going

  971. to be

  972. seeing all

  973. of these

  974. things

  975. and what's

  976. really

  977. happening

  978. what you

  979. need to

  980. understand

  981. is really

  982. happening

  983. is this

  984. I'm going

  985. to have

  986. my body

  987. broken

  988. for you

  989. I'm going

  990. to have

  991. my blood

  992. shed

  993. for you

  994. what does

  995. that mean

  996. is I'm

  997. going to

  998. take

  999. into

  1000. myself

  1001. that

  1002. punishment

  1003. I'm going

  1004. to stand

  1005. in your

  1006. place

  1007. I'm going

  1008. to stand

  1009. in your

  1010. place

  1011. and the

  1012. judgment

  1013. of God

  1014. that should

  1015. fall on

  1016. you

  1017. will fall

  1018. on me

  1019. and it's

  1020. not just

  1021. that I

  1022. am going

  1023. to die

  1024. in your

  1025. place

  1026. but you

  1027. know how

  1028. there was

  1029. that whole

  1030. thing about

  1031. me taking

  1032. God

  1033. taking the

  1034. people for

  1035. himself

  1036. this is a

  1037. new covenant

  1038. a brand new

  1039. start for the

  1040. human race

  1041. and it's

  1042. not going

  1043. to be

  1044. just for

  1045. Jewish

  1046. people

  1047. it's

  1048. going to

  1049. be for

  1050. people in

  1051. Singapore

  1052. and people

  1053. in Uganda

  1054. and people

  1055. in Nigeria

  1056. and people

  1057. in Venezuela

  1058. and it's

  1059. going to be

  1060. for people

  1061. in Manhattan

  1062. and people

  1063. in Ottawa

  1064. it's going

  1065. to be for

  1066. people in

  1067. Israel

  1068. and I'm

  1069. creating a

  1070. brand new

  1071. covenant

  1072. and a

  1073. covenant

  1074. is

  1075. like a

  1076. marriage

  1077. is like a

  1078. pale reflection

  1079. of a

  1080. covenant

  1081. and marriage

  1082. isn't as

  1083. good an

  1084. example

  1085. nowadays

  1086. because we

  1087. Canadians

  1088. think of

  1089. marriage as a

  1090. contract

  1091. which you

  1092. enter into

  1093. and then

  1094. you break

  1095. when the

  1096. terms of

  1097. the business

  1098. arrangement

  1099. no longer

  1100. work for

  1101. you

  1102. but this

  1103. is God

  1104. pledging

  1105. that he

  1106. will be

  1107. your God

  1108. in an

  1109. intimate

  1110. connection

  1111. of love

  1112. and affection

  1113. and protection

  1114. and blessing

  1115. and when he

  1116. has entered

  1117. into this

  1118. new covenant

  1119. with you

  1120. he will

  1121. never let

  1122. you go

  1123. and he

  1124. will deal

  1125. that's all

  1126. that's wrong

  1127. with you

  1128. and this

  1129. covenant

  1130. will begin

  1131. on this

  1132. side of

  1133. the grave

  1134. and it

  1135. will carry

  1136. you through

  1137. the grave

  1138. through death

  1139. and it

  1140. will be

  1141. for all

  1142. eternity

  1143. and it

  1144. is a

  1145. hope of

  1146. glory

  1147. and it

  1148. is a

  1149. covenant

  1150. that will

  1151. end up

  1152. with you

  1153. being able

  1154. to stand

  1155. naked

  1156. and unashamed

  1157. in the

  1158. very presence

  1159. of the

  1160. triune

  1161. God

  1162. and the

  1163. new heaven

  1164. and the

  1165. new earth

  1166. and that's

  1167. what I am

  1168. that's what

  1169. I am

  1170. accomplishing

  1171. on the

  1172. cross

  1173. and that's

  1174. what I'm

  1175. instituting

  1176. and that's

  1177. what's going

  1178. on

  1179. despite the

  1180. appearances

  1181. that's what's

  1182. going on

  1183. and unlike

  1184. the kingdoms

  1185. where the emperor

  1186. sends out the troops

  1187. to die on his

  1188. behalf

  1189. and under

  1190. unlike all of the

  1191. gods that you

  1192. know that

  1193. have you die

  1194. for them

  1195. this is the king

  1196. who dies

  1197. for his citizens

  1198. this is the god

  1199. who dies

  1200. for his

  1201. creatures

  1202. out of love

  1203. so when we

  1204. read these

  1205. words we're

  1206. reading Jesus

  1207. is 5,000

  1208. feet

  1209. meters

  1210. or feet

  1211. up in the

  1212. air

  1213. explanation

  1214. of what's

  1215. going on

  1216. now some

  1217. of you might

  1218. say it still

  1219. seems gross

  1220. and it still

  1221. seems lame

  1222. I haven't

  1223. lost you

  1224. my Muslim

  1225. friend

  1226. or my

  1227. secular

  1228. friend

  1229. or one

  1230. of you

  1231. who are

  1232. here

  1233. and wonders

  1234. about it

  1235. that leads

  1236. to the next

  1237. point

  1238. let's read

  1239. it again

  1240. and as they

  1241. were eating

  1242. he took

  1243. bread

  1244. and after

  1245. blessing

  1246. it broke

  1247. it and gave

  1248. it to them

  1249. and said

  1250. take this

  1251. take this

  1252. is my

  1253. body

  1254. and he

  1255. took a

  1256. cup

  1257. and when

  1258. he had

  1259. given

  1260. thanks

  1261. he gave

  1262. it to

  1263. them

  1264. and they

  1265. all

  1266. drank

  1267. of it

  1268. and he

  1269. said

  1270. to them

  1271. this is

  1272. my

  1273. blood

  1274. of the

  1275. covenant

  1276. which

  1277. is poured

  1278. out

  1279. for many

  1280. truly

  1281. I say

  1282. to you

  1283. I will

  1284. not

  1285. drink

  1286. again

  1287. of the

  1288. fruit

  1289. of the

  1290. vine

  1291. until

  1292. that

  1293. day

  1294. when I

  1295. drink

  1296. it

  1297. new

  1298. in the

  1299. kingdom

  1300. of God

  1301. you notice

  1302. that prediction

  1303. of the

  1304. resurrection

  1305. what we need

  1306. to understand

  1307. is it does

  1308. sound lame

  1309. and it does

  1310. sound a bit

  1311. gross

  1312. but it is

  1313. a means

  1314. of grace

  1315. from the

  1316. triune

  1317. God

  1318. for ordinary

  1319. people like

  1320. you and

  1321. me

  1322. what Jesus

  1323. is instituting

  1324. is a very

  1325. significant

  1326. means of

  1327. grace

  1328. it comes

  1329. right from

  1330. the triune

  1331. God

  1332. right from

  1333. the heart

  1334. and the

  1335. power

  1336. and the

  1337. mind

  1338. of the

  1339. triune

  1340. God

  1341. as a

  1342. means of

  1343. grace

  1344. for ordinary

  1345. people

  1346. like you

  1347. and me

  1348. well

  1349. why it

  1350. does seem

  1351. weak

  1352. but

  1353. you know

  1354. what

  1355. it's

  1356. this story

  1357. is only

  1358. remembered

  1359. because

  1360. the men

  1361. who embalmed

  1362. the people

  1363. who saw

  1364. Jesus

  1365. people in

  1366. those days

  1367. knew that

  1368. nobody

  1369. survived

  1370. crucifixion

  1371. Romans

  1372. were batting

  1373. a thousand

  1374. at killing

  1375. people

  1376. with crucifixion

  1377. a thousand

  1378. and in a sense

  1379. their record

  1380. still stands

  1381. because they

  1382. killed Jesus

  1383. they batted

  1384. a thousand

  1385. they saw

  1386. his blood

  1387. loss

  1388. they saw

  1389. his dehydration

  1390. they saw

  1391. the blood

  1392. come from

  1393. his side

  1394. they saw

  1395. him

  1396. carried

  1397. down

  1398. obviously

  1399. dead

  1400. collapsing

  1401. on the

  1402. ground

  1403. any of

  1404. you who've

  1405. watched

  1406. the 13

  1407. hours

  1408. I have to

  1409. confess

  1410. it's one

  1411. of my

  1412. favorite

  1413. movies

  1414. there's a

  1415. very very

  1416. terrible

  1417. scene

  1418. towards the

  1419. end

  1420. where

  1421. one of

  1422. the

  1423. people

  1424. who died

  1425. is thrown

  1426. down

  1427. they can't

  1428. get him

  1429. down from

  1430. the building

  1431. and they

  1432. just drop

  1433. him

  1434. and his

  1435. friend

  1436. screams

  1437. no

  1438. and anybody

  1439. who sees

  1440. the body

  1441. drop

  1442. knows

  1443. that

  1444. the

  1445. guy

  1446. is not

  1447. alive

  1448. and they

  1449. would have

  1450. seen

  1451. the Roman

  1452. guys

  1453. they're not

  1454. going to

  1455. take Jesus

  1456. down

  1457. very carefully

  1458. and reverently

  1459. no

  1460. they just

  1461. pull things

  1462. out

  1463. knock him

  1464. down

  1465. the thud

  1466. he's

  1467. embalmed

  1468. and he's

  1469. dead

  1470. the only

  1471. reason we

  1472. know this

  1473. story is

  1474. because he

  1475. rose from

  1476. the dead

  1477. and if he

  1478. rose from

  1479. the dead

  1480. that's a

  1481. game changer

  1482. no offense

  1483. my Muslim

  1484. friends

  1485. but it

  1486. means

  1487. that Islam

  1488. is not

  1489. true

  1490. no offense

  1491. my Buddhist

  1492. friends

  1493. or my

  1494. secular

  1495. friends

  1496. but it

  1497. means that

  1498. Jesus

  1499. is who

  1500. he said

  1501. he is

  1502. and his

  1503. teaching is

  1504. trustworthy

  1505. and it

  1506. comes from

  1507. a place

  1508. of great

  1509. power

  1510. because he

  1511. has defeated

  1512. death

  1513. and he has

  1514. defeated that

  1515. which causes

  1516. death

  1517. and he's

  1518. done this

  1519. in a public

  1520. way

  1521. and he's

  1522. done it

  1523. for you

  1524. and me

  1525. and that

  1526. means that

  1527. this is a

  1528. mighty act

  1529. of grace

  1530. from the

  1531. triune God

  1532. for us

  1533. and if he

  1534. offers us

  1535. a means

  1536. of grace

  1537. it might

  1538. not look

  1539. like what

  1540. we expect

  1541. power to

  1542. do

  1543. and it

  1544. might look

  1545. lame

  1546. and it

  1547. might look

  1548. gross

  1549. but it

  1550. comes from

  1551. the one

  1552. who looked

  1553. at you

  1554. and loved

  1555. you

  1556. and died

  1557. for you

  1558. and has

  1559. defeated

  1560. death

  1561. well we

  1562. look at

  1563. it and

  1564. one of the

  1565. significances

  1566. of the

  1567. symbolism

  1568. you know

  1569. they didn't

  1570. really

  1571. nobody sat

  1572. there and

  1573. thought oh I

  1574. just drank

  1575. Jesus'

  1576. blood

  1577. that's pretty

  1578. gross

  1579. they would

  1580. have found

  1581. that

  1582. gross

  1583. they would

  1584. have found

  1585. it actually

  1586. probably more

  1587. gross than

  1588. you do

  1589. because the

  1590. Jewish law

  1591. forbids it

  1592. and we have

  1593. cultures where

  1594. some of us

  1595. will eat things

  1596. which are made

  1597. of blood

  1598. but they

  1599. would have been

  1600. more gross

  1601. for them

  1602. but what

  1603. this is

  1604. symbolizing

  1605. is that we

  1606. remember what

  1607. Jesus does

  1608. for us on

  1609. the cross

  1610. we remember

  1611. what our

  1612. destiny is

  1613. in Christ

  1614. and what

  1615. we know

  1616. if we're

  1617. at all

  1618. honest

  1619. I need

  1620. the inside

  1621. of me

  1622. to change

  1623. I need

  1624. that place

  1625. where my

  1626. the choosing

  1627. to do wrong

  1628. is changed

  1629. where my

  1630. choosing to be

  1631. proud is changed

  1632. where my

  1633. lack of

  1634. generosity

  1635. where my

  1636. lack of

  1637. forgiveness

  1638. where my

  1639. desire for

  1640. revenge

  1641. where these

  1642. hard things

  1643. from within

  1644. me where

  1645. they emerge

  1646. that's where

  1647. I need

  1648. God's grace

  1649. to come in

  1650. and we're

  1651. reminded of it

  1652. when we feed

  1653. on him

  1654. it is this

  1655. powerful way

  1656. to say

  1657. no no

  1658. this isn't

  1659. just sort of

  1660. like putting

  1661. something on

  1662. your hair

  1663. and doing

  1664. like some

  1665. lipstick

  1666. to make

  1667. the externals

  1668. look

  1669. this is

  1670. something

  1671. that's

  1672. the grace

  1673. is for

  1674. all of you

  1675. the redemption

  1676. is for

  1677. all of you

  1678. and we need

  1679. to be remembered

  1680. that Jesus

  1681. comes

  1682. he lives

  1683. within us

  1684. we are now

  1685. born again

  1686. and we need

  1687. to be reminded

  1688. that we need

  1689. to think

  1690. of get

  1691. who he is

  1692. and what he's

  1693. done for us

  1694. and his words

  1695. we need to get

  1696. them inside

  1697. of us

  1698. because it's

  1699. on the inside

  1700. that he changes

  1701. us and so

  1702. he's given

  1703. us this

  1704. powerful means

  1705. of grace

  1706. that we remember

  1707. this and we

  1708. reenact it

  1709. and we think

  1710. it's lame

  1711. because we say

  1712. like I've heard

  1713. people say

  1714. you know

  1715. Ramadan

  1716. is way better

  1717. than anything

  1718. Christians do

  1719. because we have

  1720. to fast

  1721. for all this

  1722. length of time

  1723. even when it's

  1724. really hot

  1725. and you know

  1726. we look at

  1727. things like yoga

  1728. and I'm not

  1729. putting any

  1730. things down

  1731. but from our

  1732. Canadian point

  1733. of view

  1734. these things

  1735. they resonate

  1736. with us

  1737. they show

  1738. willpower

  1739. they show

  1740. losing weight

  1741. they show

  1742. mind control

  1743. they show

  1744. how to get

  1745. more flexible

  1746. and how to

  1747. get the body

  1748. in shape

  1749. and they

  1750. all speak to

  1751. us

  1752. and they all

  1753. look like

  1754. they have

  1755. power

  1756. but the fact

  1757. of the matter

  1758. is

  1759. is that you

  1760. can lose

  1761. all the weight

  1762. you want to

  1763. lose

  1764. and you get

  1765. to be the

  1766. perfect weight

  1767. and you can

  1768. get unbelievable

  1769. mind control

  1770. and you can

  1771. have unbelievable

  1772. flexibility and

  1773. strength

  1774. you can have

  1775. fantastic

  1776. physical

  1777. discipline

  1778. but the fact

  1779. of the matter

  1780. is it's all

  1781. doomed because

  1782. you will die

  1783. go to a

  1784. graveyard and

  1785. you'll see

  1786. where you end

  1787. up

  1788. it doesn't

  1789. matter how

  1790. strong you

  1791. are how

  1792. fit you

  1793. are how

  1794. fantastic

  1795. your willpower

  1796. is it all

  1797. dies

  1798. this is a

  1799. means of

  1800. grace what

  1801. does a

  1802. means of

  1803. grace mean

  1804. my time's

  1805. going but

  1806. like a

  1807. perfect way

  1808. to understand

  1809. a means of

  1810. grace is

  1811. this if

  1812. you go

  1813. back and

  1814. I should

  1815. have looked

  1816. it up I

  1817. think it's

  1818. 2nd Kings

  1819. 18 but I

  1820. might be wrong

  1821. about it 1st

  1822. Kings 18 I

  1823. might be wrong

  1824. about it there's

  1825. this time when

  1826. Elijah is going

  1827. to have a

  1828. contest with

  1829. the prophets

  1830. of Baal and

  1831. they agree

  1832. they're going

  1833. to have a

  1834. contest to see

  1835. which god

  1836. will send

  1837. fire and

  1838. there's like

  1839. you know

  1840. hundreds and

  1841. hundreds of

  1842. them and

  1843. they set the

  1844. altar up and

  1845. they put the

  1846. animal on it

  1847. and they

  1848. you know

  1849. they use

  1850. their willpower

  1851. and they use

  1852. their physical

  1853. power and

  1854. they use their

  1855. magical incantations

  1856. and they do

  1857. they cut

  1858. themselves and

  1859. they sacrifice

  1860. themselves and

  1861. they do everything

  1862. they possibly can

1863. do at the end of

  1864. the day the fire

  1865. doesn't come

  1866. and then Elijah

  1867. comes and he

  1868. takes some stones

  1869. and he kills an

  1870. animal he puts

  1871. some wood and he

  1872. pours water on it

  1873. he pours water on

  1874. it pours water on

  1875. it pours water on

  1876. it and just so

  1877. you know I'm not

  1878. a camper I've said

  1879. this before but I

  1880. sort of do

  1881. understand that if you

1882. want to start a fire

  1883. you don't pour

  1884. water on the

  1885. wood first

  1886. that's just not

  1887. how you start

  1888. fires that's not

  1889. going to work

  1890. ever and then

  1891. and then he

  1892. prays and God

  1893. sends the fire

  1894. so Elijah acts

  1895. in obedience to

  1896. do what God

  1897. tells him to do

  1898. even though it

  1899. looks weak and

  1900. even though it

  1901. looks foolish and

  1902. even though it

  1903. looks like it will

  1904. never accomplish

  1905. what it's supposed

  1906. to accomplish but

  1907. because he does

  1908. what God asks him

  1909. to do God does

  1910. what only he can

  1911. do which is send

  1912. the fire and

  1913. that's at the

  1914. heart of the

  1915. means of grace

  1916. and by the

  1917. way if you're

  1918. watching this

  1919. we Christians

  1920. often also think

  1921. it's lame

  1922. that's why we

  1923. want to try to

  1924. have something

  1925. maybe with special

  1926. music or some

  1927. special lighting or

  1928. smoke machines or

  1929. lasers to try to

  1930. create some more

  1931. powerful emotion or

  1932. why we want to

  1933. have you know get

  1934. me dressed up in

  1935. lots of robes and

  1936. parade around and

  1937. have choirs and

  1938. all of this stuff

  1939. because we sort of

  1940. worry that these

  1941. mere words aren't

  1942. going to be enough

  1943. but the fact the

  1944. matter is is that

  1945. all those things

  1946. just distract

  1947. the means of

  1948. grace aren't if

  1949. you have lots of

  1950. processions and

  1951. lots of robes it's

1952. not if you have a

  1953. way to emotionally

  1954. manipulate people to

  1955. feel particular

  1956. emotions it's not

  1957. connected to any of

  1958. that it's the simple

  1959. obedient act of

  1960. repeating the words

  1961. of Jesus and

  1962. receiving the bread

  1963. and the wine in

  1964. obedience to him

  1965. and God brings the

  1966. fire and he's not

  1967. interested per se in

  1968. making you richer

  1969. making you slimmer

  1970. making you more

  1971. muscular having you

  1972. have better mind

  1973. control he has a

  1974. way better plan for

1975. you and that plan is

1976. to be in the new

  1977. heaven and the new

  1978. earth and to stand

  1979. in his presence and

1980. only he knows how to

1981. get there and so we

  1982. humbly receive it can

  1983. be in a great

  1984. cathedral nothing wrong

  1985. with processions nothing

  1986. more wrong with robes

1987. but you and I today

  1988. or that church that

  1989. earlier today met

  1990. under a tree in a

  1991. field still using

  1992. farming techniques from

  1993. hundreds of years ago

  1994. you and I in

  1995. obedience say the

  1996. words receive the bread

1997. and the wine and God

  1998. gives grace

  1999. he fits you for

  2000. heaven

2001. I just because of the

2002. time I'm just going to

2003. say a couple of things

2004. I'm going to just very

  2005. very briefly

  2006. the story which comes

  2007. right after this

  2008. actually we'll read it

  2009. I'll be very brief

  2010. it's very important to

  2011. understand communion this

  2012. story that happens next

2013. and look at this verse

2014. 26 and when they had

2015. sung a hymn they went

2016. out to the Mount of

  2017. Olives the Passover meal

2018. is over and Jesus said

2019. to them you will all fall

2020. away for it is written I

2021. will strike the shepherd and

  2022. the sheep will be

2023. scattered but after I am

2024. raised I will go before

  2025. you to Galilee

  2026. Peter said to him

2027. even if even though they

2028. all fall away I will

  2029. not it's a proud and

  2030. arrogant statement

  2031. he doesn't say oh

2032. Jesus I'm going to fall

2033. away have mercy on me

2034. but no no you're wrong

2035. Jesus and Jesus said to

2036. him truly I tell you this

  2037. very night before the

  2038. rooster crows twice you

2039. will deny me three times

2040. but Peter doubles down he

  2041. says emphatically if I

2042. must die with you I will

2043. not deny you and they

2044. all said the same now

  2045. here's the thing very

  2046. briefly because of the

2047. time the Lord's Supper is

2048. not for the the elite it's

2049. not for the people who

  2050. make believe they're worthy

2051. the Lord's Supper is for

  2052. redeemed sinners the Lord's

2053. Supper is for a redeemed

2054. sinner like you and me

  2055. that's who it's for

2056. you want to know something

  2057. else which is really

  2058. interesting you know on

2059. one hand Peter and all

  2060. those disciples were right

2061. they they were wrong they

  2062. would deny Jesus before

2063. the night was over but

2064. they said they'll die for

2065. him every single one of

  2066. those disciples except John

  2067. died a martyr's death

2068. everyone and John died in

2069. exile in a place that now

2070. we would think of as a

2071. holiday place but back then

2072. was an exile and they all

  2073. died refusing to say

  2074. anything other than that

2075. Jesus had risen from the

2076. dead they died for a fact

2077. for the good news what's the

  2078. difference you see the

  2079. difference is that Peter

2080. says this and they said

2081. this out of their self

2082. will out of their mind

  2083. control out of their

2084. control out of me control

2085. out of my agenda out of my

2086. power and part of the

  2087. mystery I I long for the

2088. day we can have a church

2089. building where we can kneel

2090. for communion if you want to

2091. receive communion by kneeling I

2092. long for that day to return

2093. it's part of the Anglican

2094. tradition to kneel to receive

  2095. communion why what's the

  2096. difference between now and

2097. what will happen to them

  2098. later it's this profound

2099. truth of the Bible I am

2100. taller when I kneel before

2101. him I am taller when I kneel

  2102. before Jesus and receive

2103. grace from him it is

  2104. completely against what the

2105. world would say they'd say

  2106. George you're shorter when

2107. you kneel well generally you

2108. are and if I kneel to an

  2109. idol I've only become

2110. smaller and if I kneel to

2111. fears and if I kneel to

  2112. lies I've only become

2113. smaller but if I kneel to

2114. him I am taller and I can be

  2115. by God's grace like

2116. I am not going to be

2117. I am not going to be

2118. I am not going to be

  2119. burned at the cross

2120. burned at a stake he had

2121. earlier denied the faith and

2122. then he recanted he repented

2123. and he wanted he held his

2124. hand the story is he held his

2125. hands in the flame because he

2126. wanted that to die be burned

2127. first you are taller when you

2128. bow when you kneel final

2129. thing I have could you put up

2130. the two the first of the two

2131. sentences Claire this is a

2132. little bit of help just as we

2133. bring to a close about how to

  2134. receive communion the first

2135. thing is actually I'm just

2136. going to say a challenge to

2137. those who are online I

2138. understand why there's lots of

  2139. reasons why you're not

  2140. receiving coming here to

2141. receive communion I just want

2142. to urge you you are passing up

2143. a means of grace I want to

2144. urge you I mean it might be

2145. that you can't come most of

2146. the time it I know there can

2147. be health and other types of

2148. reasons but I want to urge you

2149. that you are passing up a

2150. means of grace and for those of

2151. you are watching and maybe

  2152. you're in a city far away

  2153. maybe you're a university

  2154. student who's can't get up

2155. early enough on a Sunday

  2156. morning you're watching it

2157. later on from the University of

2158. Ottawa I just like to urge you

2159. to consider that maybe God has

2160. brought you to watch these

2161. services because he wants you

2162. to begin that person who begins

2163. to pray that a church can be

2164. planted in your city I want to

2165. I want to challenge you that

2166. this might exactly be while

2167. you're watching this that you

  2168. can be if you're a university

2169. student the means by which we

2170. can get back on the campus to

2171. share the gospel and I want to

2172. challenge you to bring it to God

2173. in prayer and if he's and to

2174. share it with us so that we can

2175. join with you in prayer that God

2176. will plant a church so that you

2177. can go on a Sunday morning and

2178. will miss having you watch but

2179. that you can receive the means

2180. of grace of the Lord's Supper on

  2181. a Sunday morning I want to

  2182. challenge you

2183. and these sentences are going to

2184. be very very helpful for us to

  2185. understand how to receive

2186. communion and they come from the

2187. Book of Common Prayer it comes

2188. from the English Reformation and

2189. part of them are yellowed on a

2190. purpose notice what we do the

2191. first thing is this is

2192. traditionally if you were to go

2193. to a if you had come to my

2194. eight o'clock service back in

2195. the day with an altar rail and I

2196. went along the things you would

2197. have heard me say this every

2198. Sunday as I was giving you

2199. communion and it explains what

2200. communion is and what you should

2201. be praying into and if you'd like

2202. to find these words later on we

2203. can send them to you it's in the

2204. the 1662 Book of Common Prayer

2205. but notice we don't hide the

2206. words we don't try to like we

2207. just say the body of our Lord

2208. Jesus Christ which was given for

2209. you we're being invited to

2210. remember that his body was given

2211. for you and notice this preserve

2212. part of the means of grace is not

2213. that we become Christians through it

2214. but those of us who are Christians

  2215. redeem sinners it's a means by

2216. which God preserves us body and soul

  2217. unto everlasting life

  2218. unto everlasting life

2219. and then I say take and eat this in

2220. remembrance that Christ died for you

2221. once again remembering that he had

2222. died for us and hear this feed on him

2223. in your heart by faith with

  2224. thanksgiving

2225. as you prepare to receive communion

2226. you can think of these words and you

  2227. say Lord I'm a I'm I'm watching these

2228. other people receiving and I want you

2229. to help me feed on you in my heart

2230. and you might say I don't know what

2231. that's going to be like emotionally I

2232. don't know what's going to be like

2233. emotionally maybe it's going to be

2234. very moving maybe it'll be nothing

2235. but help me not only now but always to

2236. feed on you in my heart and feed on

2237. you in my heart with thanksgiving for

2238. who you are and what you've said and

2239. what you've accomplished for me

2240. and then after you have received the

2241. bread I would come along and I would

2242. say the blood of our Lord Jesus

  2243. Christ

2244. once again we're just copying the

  2245. words of Jesus

2246. which was shed for you

2247. once again notice this preserve your

2248. body and soul unto everlasting life

2249. drink this what in remembrance that

2250. Christ's blood was shed for you and be

2251. thankful and we can say Lord grip me

2252. with the gospel I'm not thankful

2253. help me to be thankful not necessarily

2254. the emotion of thankfulness but the

2255. life of thankfulness which is more

2256. important than the emotion of

2257. thankfulness you see when we have a

2258. life of thankfulness it is easier to

2259. do hard things it is easier to to be

2260. faithful it is easier to read the Bible

2261. it is easier to be generous it's easier

2262. to forgive and so we can ask God not

2263. just for the emotion of thankfulness but

2264. the reality the life of thankfulness

  2265. invite you to stand

2266. let's bow our heads in prayer

2267. father thank you for the grace of our

2268. Lord Jesus Christ for what he did for us

2269. on the cross for his life his death his

2270. resurrection we thank and praise you

2271. father that you have brought us to a

2272. faith in Christ for those of us who have

2273. come to a faith a personal faith and

2274. trust in Jesus as Savior and Lord

2275. father if there are any here or any who

2276. are watching who have not yet come to a

2277. faith and trust in Jesus as Savior and

2278. Lord we ask father that you help them to

2279. put their faith and trust in him we thank

2280. you father for Jesus and we thank you

2281. father that you have provided this very

2282. very simple but very beautiful and

2283. profound means of grace whereby you

2284. preserve us body and soul unto everlasting

2285. life that you fit us for an eternal life

2286. with you in the new heaven and the new

2287. earth and we ask father that you help us

2288. to be thankful for what Christ has

2289. accomplished for us not just as an

2290. emotion father although we love the

2291. emotion of thankfulness and I if you

2292. give us that as well that's great but

2293. more than the emotion we ask Lord that you

2294. grant us the habits and the and the mind

2295. and the tone of life and and and and

2296. disciplines of life that emerge out of a

2297. deep thankfulness for what you have done

2298. for us in the person of your son and his

2299. death upon the cross on our behalf and we

2300. ask these things in the name of Jesus your

2301. son and our Savior amen

2302. your son and I don't say that in the

2303. scriptures for us in the given生

2304. which is striking to him

2305. He was my son and I think of this
