  1. whom they will call the Blessed One.

  2. Please have a seat.

  3. Let me just add my own welcome.

  4. Welcome to church this morning,

  5. especially if you're new and gathering with us.

  6. We pray that you would know God's encouragement.

  7. A welcome also to church this evening at 5.30.

  8. Some of the themes that we're touching upon this morning,

  9. we will think about in the wonderful beginning of John's gospel.

  10. We're thinking about the questions that Jesus asked.

  11. In John 1, he asked the question, what do you want?

  12. One of the most fundamental questions we can ever ask ourselves.

  13. Jesus asks it of us.

  14. And again, just a welcome,

  15. if you are able to join one of our community discipleship groups,

  16. a place to enjoy friendship, fellowship around the Bible,

  17. to discuss it, to pray together.

  18. A great opportunity for us to build strength together,

  19. to encourage one another in the middle of the week.

  20. Well, now let me invite you now to turn with me to God's words.

  21. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  22. This is the last time for now we'll be thinking about aspects of the life of David.

  23. And we just sang the psalm to the perfect king,

  24. anticipating the Messiah who will come.

  25. And in chapter 7 of 2 Samuel,

  26. we have the gospel of the promised king in another form.

  27. So let's hear God's word.

  28. After the king was settled in his palace,

  29. and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him,

  30. he said to Nathan the prophet,

  31. here I am, living in a house of cedar,

  32. while the ark of God remains in a tent.

  33. Nathan replied to the king,

  34. whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it,

  35. for the Lord is with you.

  36. But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan,

  37. saying,

  38. Go and tell my servant David,

  39. this is what the Lord says.

  40. Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?

  41. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.

  42. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.

  43. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,

  44. did I ever say to any of their rulers,

  45. whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel,

  46. why have you not built me a house of cedar?

  47. Now then, tell my servant David,

  48. this is what the Lord Almighty says.

  49. I took you from the pasture,

  50. from tending the flock,

  51. and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.

  52. I have been with you wherever you have gone,

  53. and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.

  54. Now I will make your name great,

  55. like the names of the greatest men on earth,

  56. and I will provide a place for my people Israel,

  57. and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own,

  58. and no longer be disturbed.

  59. Wicked people shall not oppress them anymore,

  60. as they did at the beginning,

  61. and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel.

  62. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.

  63. The Lord declares to you that the Lord Himself will establish a house for you.

  64. When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors,

  65. I will raise up your offspring to succeed you,

  66. your own flesh and blood,

  67. and I will establish His kingdom.

  68. He is the one who will build a house for my name,

  69. and I will establish the throne of His kingdom forever.

  70. I will be His father,

  71. and He shall be my son.

  72. When He does wrong,

  73. I will punish Him with a rod wielded by men,

  74. with floggings inflicted by human hands,

  75. but my love will never be taken away from Him,

  76. as I took it away from Saul,

  77. whom I removed from before you.

  78. Your house and your kingdom

  79. shall endure forever before me.

  80. Your throne shall be established forever.

  81. Nathan reported to David

  82. all the words of this entire revelation.

  83. Amen.

  84. So this morning,

  85. we are thinking about promise and fulfillment.

  86. And to help us with that,

  87. picture a child of the 80s,

  88. the first time walking down the street

  89. where they see one of those mobile phones.

  90. And imagine that child in the 80s saying,

  91. one day,

  92. one day my child will have one of those,

  93. those shiny, wonderful,

  94. magnificent pieces of technology.

  95. If we fast forward through the decades,

  96. and it's now the child's birthday,

  97. if he is given the shiny new iPhone,

  98. is the promise kept?

  99. I think we would all answer yes.

  100. You know,

  101. back in the 80s,

  102. the giant brick was the best

  103. that could be imagined at the time,

  104. but the promise has been fulfilled

  105. in light of new technology,

  106. in light of the passing of history.

  107. Now this is important

  108. because we have a central promise

  109. from God given to King David.

  110. And from this point in Israel's history,

  111. their hope is now centered on

  112. the everlasting Messiah King.

  113. He's the hope of God's people.

  114. So you turn to the Gospels.

  115. Remember John the Baptist

  116. asking the question about Jesus.

  117. Are you the one who is to come?

  118. That question matters

  119. more than anything else.

  120. But see,

  121. for most of the Israelites,

  122. and that includes in Jesus' day,

  123. their expectations were low

  124. in terms of how this promise

  125. would be fulfilled.

  126. This Messiah,

  127. he would be a strong king.

  128. He would have a settled

  129. political kingdom.

  130. There might be freedom and peace

  131. for the people of God

  132. in their land.

  133. But we're going to see

  134. that God's fulfillment

  135. is far bigger

  136. than they could ever have dreamed of.

  137. And it's a hope

  138. and it's a promise

  139. of Jesus,

  140. the Son of God,

  141. who has come to be Messiah King

  142. to establish an everlasting kingdom.

  143. So 2 Samuel 7

  144. explains to us

  145. the significance

  146. of Jesus as everlasting king.

  147. That right now,

  148. Jesus rules and reigns over all.

  149. Because we might find ourselves wondering,

  150. okay,

  151. here is a promise

  152. for a king of Israel,

  153. for a future king of Israel.

  154. What has that got to do with us?

  155. We turn to the gospels.

  156. Maybe we wonder,

  157. why is it that Matthew and Luke,

  158. as they tell the story of Jesus,

  159. why do they highlight,

  160. again and again,

  161. Jesus born in David's city?

  162. Jesus comes from David's family.

  163. Jesus fulfills David's promise.

  164. To help us,

  165. we're going to need to do some work.

  166. We're going to need to pull on some,

  167. what we can call,

  168. gospel threads.

  169. There are themes that are woven

  170. throughout the Bible.

  171. words,

  172. ideas,

  173. and themes

  174. that direct us

  175. both backwards

  176. to previous promises.

  177. So we'll be thinking a lot

  178. about creation

  179. and Adam and Eve.

  180. We're going to think about promises

  181. made to Abraham.

  182. But there are also going to be

  183. these promises

  184. that connect us forward

  185. to King Jesus,

  186. to the good news of the gospel.

  187. Because in this promise

  188. made to David,

  189. the Spirit gives us eyes to see,

  190. we will see the glory of Christ.

  191. We will see the hope

  192. that He brings,

  193. the promise of new beginnings,

  194. the grace that He shows

  195. to His people.

  196. But before we get to that point,

  197. we need to recognize

  198. the central theme of this passage.

  199. And it's the theme

  200. of the promised house.

  201. David wants to build

  202. a house for God.

  203. God speaks of building

  204. a house for David.

  205. His house building is there.

  206. So let's work through

  207. the text very briefly,

  208. thinking first about

  209. David's housing crisis.

  210. If you look in your Bibles,

  211. do you see the crisis there

  212. in the first three verses?

  213. God has settled the king

  214. in his palace

  215. and given him rest.

  216. God has established

  217. David as king,

  218. and David's instinct

  219. in response,

  220. God has given me rest.

  221. I want to build

  222. a resting place for God.

  223. We recognize again

  224. that David has a profound concern

  225. for God's glory.

  226. We already saw it

  227. in chapter 6.

  228. As he worshiped,

  229. as he wanted the ark

  230. to be brought to Jerusalem,

  231. he wanted to connect

  232. his throne with God's throne

  233. to show that he was living

  234. as God's king

  235. under God's rule.

  236. And he's still concerned

  237. for the glory of God.

  238. And so he has this problem,

  239. he has this crisis.

  240. Verse 2,

  241. he explains it to Nathan,

  242. the prophet.

  243. Here I am,

  244. living in a house of cedar.

  245. I've got this great big

  246. luxurious palace,

  247. but God's ark,

  248. the symbol of God's presence,

  249. the symbol of God's rule,

  250. it's in a tent.

  251. That doesn't seem right to David.

  252. Nathan recognizes David's heart,

  253. he recognizes his instinct is right,

  254. whatever you have in mind,

  255. go ahead and do it,

  256. for the Lord is with you,

  257. though we'll discover,

  258. God says,

  259. not yet and not you.

  260. That's David's housing crisis,

  261. but from that,

  262. we discover something

  263. of God's housing policy,

  264. because in verse 4,

  265. the word of the Lord comes.

  266. It comes through Nathan.

  267. And the response is that

  268. there is something

  269. that is far more important to God

  270. than living in a solid structure,

  271. than living in a cedar house.

  272. And that more important principle

  273. is what we can call

  274. the Emmanuel principle.

  275. This principle that God desires

  276. to live with his people,

  277. God with us,

  278. God with his people.

  279. So in verses 6 and 7,

  280. that's what he says,

  281. it was true for Israel.

  282. During the time of the Exodus

  283. and in the wilderness,

  284. I have been moving

  285. from place to place

  286. with a tent as my dwelling.

  287. Wherever Israel moved,

  288. God moved with them,

  289. because most important to him,

  290. being with his people.

  291. And in fact,

  292. he makes it even more personal,

  293. because he says this was true for David

  294. in his rise to the throne.

  295. Look at verse 8.

  296. I took you from the pasture

  297. and appointed you ruler.

  298. I have been with you

  299. wherever you have gone.

  300. The story of the nation,

  301. the story of the king,

  302. God with his people.

  303. It's one of the great themes

  304. and promises that we find

  305. throughout the Bible.

  306. So this evening,

  307. we're going to turn to

  308. John chapter 1, verse 14.

    John 1:14

  309. Jesus, the word of God,

  310. the word who became flesh

  311. and dwelt among us.

  312. And we have seen his glory,

  313. the glory of God

  314. in the tent of a human body.

  315. Well, having explained

  316. his housing priority

  317. and policy,

  318. in verses 11 to 16,

  319. we see the house building project.

  320. Three details that stand out.

  321. First of all,

  322. God will say to David,

  323. David,

  324. you will not build

  325. the house for me

  326. in the sense of a dwelling place.

  327. We discover in verse 12 and 13

  328. that that's going to be Solomon's job

  329. and Jesus is going to come

  330. and he's going to be the true temple

  331. and establish a kingdom

  332. that lasts forever.

  333. But David is not going to build the house.

  334. He's not going to build the dwelling place.

  335. But God will build David's house.

  336. We'll establish a dynasty.

  337. We'll establish a royal family

  338. for David.

  339. The Lord declares to you

  340. that the Lord himself

  341. will establish a house for you.

  342. There's a principle of grace going on here.

  343. That the first thing that needs to happen

  344. is that God must first

  345. make this promise.

  346. God must first establish

  347. David's family line

  348. as the one through whom

  349. the kingdom will rest forever.

  350. And from that promise,

  351. from that grace,

  352. then can come

  353. obedience serving,

  354. can come

  355. the building of the temple

  356. through Solomon.

  357. So David will not build the house.

  358. God will build the house.

  359. But we also need to recognize

  360. that these two houses,

  361. by God's design,

  362. will be connected.

  363. And we see that there

  364. in that it's this,

  365. someone from this permanent dynasty,

  366. Solomon, David's son,

  367. who will build a permanent dwelling place,

  368. the temple for the Lord.

  369. Speaking to us of God's desire

  370. that the throne

  371. and the temple

  372. be united.

  373. God desires

  374. that his king

  375. establish

  376. and be,

  377. when we come to Jesus,

  378. the true temple,

  379. the true meeting place

  380. between God and man.

  381. But there is this

  382. permanent union of the crowds

  383. that the Lord God

  384. will rule forever

  385. through the son he loves.

  386. And that son that he loves

  387. is Jesus.

  388. Two points of application

  389. for us at this stage.

  390. First, just to remind ourselves

  391. that God's glory matters.

  392. David was right

  393. in his concern

  394. for God's glory.

  395. His timing was off,

  396. but his instinct was right.

  397. We actually discover

  398. in the later prophets,

  399. you could turn to a prophet

  400. like Haggai.

  401. And Haggai is told

  402. by God

  403. to deliver a message

  404. to the people,

  405. a message of judgment.

  406. Judgment because

  407. the people were living

  408. in their luxurious houses,

  409. but the temple

  410. was lying in ruins.

  411. So, they are judged

  412. for not having a concern

  413. for God's glory,

  414. and that was shown

  415. in not having a concern

  416. for the temple.

  417. So, when David wanted

  418. to build,

  419. it was for him

  420. going to be

  421. an expression of worship.

  422. God is glorious.

  423. What value do you and I

  424. place on God's glory

  425. in our lives,

  426. in our day to day,

  427. relative to our own luxury,

  428. relative to our own concern

  429. for our own glory?

  430. Because God's glory matters.

  431. And secondly,

  432. God's building project matters.

  433. So, this kingdom promise

  434. that we have here

  435. is a permanent,

  436. eternal promise.

  437. This is a promise

  438. of God's everlasting king.

  439. This is a promise

  440. of God's faithful love.

  441. Even when,

  442. and God's word spoke of this,

  443. even when his people mess up,

  444. and we see the kings of Israel

  445. mess up in sin frequently,

  446. this is a promise

  447. of an eternal kingdom

  448. that even endures

  449. beyond the grave.

  450. Book of Acts,

  451. body of David decayed.

  452. Jesus' body didn't see decay.

  453. He was raised up

  454. and now he has

  455. an eternal kingdom.

  456. God's building project matters.

  457. And it matters

  458. because it centers on

  459. a perfect king.

  460. So, that's where

  461. we're going to turn next

  462. to the perfect king

  463. anticipated in this promise.

  464. Some of us, I imagine,

  465. will be familiar

  466. with the legend of Excalibur,

  467. the sword in the stone,

  468. the story of how

  469. the boy Arthur

  470. was revealed

  471. as the rightful king

  472. of the Britons.

  473. If you're not familiar

  474. with the story,

  475. the previous king died,

  476. a king by the name

  477. of Pendragon.

  478. There was no heir

  479. to the throne

  480. and so the kingdom

  481. was thrown into chaos.

  482. The knights of England

  483. were rising

  484. to get armies

  485. to fight with one another

  486. to see who would be the king.

  487. And then,

  488. this mysterious

  489. sword in the stone

  490. appeared.

  491. And there was a test.

  492. Whoever can pull

  493. the sword from the stone,

  494. he is the rightful king.

  495. Arthur passed the test

  496. and he was crowned

  497. and there was peace.

  498. For hundreds of years,

  499. ever since the promise

  500. of 2 Samuel 7,

  501. God's people

  502. have been searching

  503. and longing

  504. for the rightful king.

  505. Where is the Messiah?

  506. Has he come yet?

  507. When will he be?

  508. Are you the one

  509. who is to come?

  510. What will be the sign?

  511. How will we know

  512. when this worthy one appears?

  513. Not that he will pull

  514. a sword from a stone.

  515. The worthy one,

  516. the rightful king,

  517. will fulfill

  518. the amazing promise

  519. that we find here

  520. in this chapter.

  521. And so,

  522. what we're going to do

  523. is we're going to pull on,

  524. as I said,

  525. some of those gospel threads,

  526. these themes

  527. that are woven together,

  528. that help the New Testament

  529. writers to see

  530. the everlasting king

  531. is Jesus.

  532. They were in no doubt,

  533. as they began to preach

  534. the book of Acts

  535. and as they wrote

  536. the New Testament,

  537. that Jesus is this promised king.

  538. He is good news

  539. and a good news

  540. beyond anyone's

  541. wildest imagination.

  542. The first thread

  543. to pull on

  544. is the thread of hope

  545. and it's hope

  546. connected to a seed

  547. or to the offspring.

  548. Hope, of course,

  549. is important.

  550. It's important for us

  551. as people.

  552. Hope gets us out of bed.

  553. Hope keeps us

  554. moving forward.

  555. Hope allows us

  556. to dream

  557. that things

  558. will get better.

  559. It is a hard thing

  560. when we find our hopes

  561. are disappointed,

  562. when our hopes

  563. are crushed.

  564. One thing that we discover

  565. that we want

  566. as people

  567. is solid hope.

  568. Something or someone

  569. we can place our hopes in

  570. who will not,

  571. which will not disappoint.

  572. as we've already said,

  573. that for the people

  574. of God

  575. in the Old Testament,

  576. for the nation of Israel,

  577. this promise

  578. given to David

  579. meant that for them,

  580. Messiah King

  581. is my hope.

  582. Hope is now located

  583. in a person.

  584. And as they lived

  585. through dark times,

  586. times of division

  587. within the kingdom,

  588. as they saw

  589. their nation

  590. invaded,

  591. as they went

  592. into exile,

  593. still hope

  594. remained

  595. in the Messiah

  596. King.

  597. And that hope

  598. was planted there

  599. by God.

  600. There's a deliberate

  601. word choice

  602. here in verse 12.

  603. When your days

  604. are over

  605. and you rest

  606. with your ancestors,

  607. I will raise up

  608. your offspring

  609. to succeed you,

  610. your own flesh

  611. and blood,

  612. and I will establish

  613. his kingdom.

  614. That word offspring,

  615. sometimes translated

  616. seed,

  617. is a thread

  618. that speaks hope.

  619. Because those were words

  620. spoken to Abraham,

  621. known in the Bible

  622. as the father of faith.

  623. in Genesis chapter 15,

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  624. to childless Abraham

  625. came the promise

  626. that it will be

  627. an offspring,

  628. it will be a seed

  629. from your own body

  630. that God will bring

  631. blessing,

  632. God will speak

  633. his promise

  634. to the nations

  635. of the world.

  636. And now we're being told

  637. the king,

  638. this future king,

  639. is the seed,

  640. is the offspring

  641. who will bring

  642. blessing from God

  643. to all who will

  644. trust in him.

  645. If we want to know

  646. life with God,

  647. the love of God,

  648. hope from God,

  649. we need to know

  650. the offspring.

  651. And there's more.

  652. Because this word

  653. offspring

  654. or seed

  655. was a word

  656. that was spoken

  657. to Adam and Eve

  658. way back

  659. in the Garden of Eden.

  660. in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  661. as they were living

  662. in a perfect world,

  663. perfect garden,

  664. perfect peace

  665. with one another,

  666. perfect life with God,

  667. they fell into sin.

  668. They were tempted

  669. to disobey God,

  670. to mistrust God,

  671. to do the one thing

  672. they were commanded

  673. not to do,

  674. and so sin

  675. came into the world,

  676. bringing all the death

  677. and the ruin

  678. and the chaos

  679. that we see

  680. in our world today.

  681. And even then,

  682. Genesis 3, 15,

  683. God spoke a word

  684. of promise,

  685. the promise

  686. of a seed

  687. who would crush

  688. the head

  689. of the serpent.

  690. The one whose heel

  691. would be bruised,

  692. but he would crush

  693. the head

  694. of the serpent,

  695. anticipating

  696. King Jesus

  697. coming

  698. on a rescue mission

  699. to save sinners

  700. by defeating

  701. evil.

  702. evil.

  703. That's why

  704. the New Testament

  705. authors want

  706. to keep highlighting

  707. for us,

  708. Jesus is from

  709. Abraham's family,

  710. Jesus is from

  711. David's family line.

  712. That's why Paul

  713. in the book of Galatians

  714. will say,

  715. Jesus is the seed,

  716. because he speaks

  717. hope to the world.

  718. In the coming

  719. of Jesus

  720. as everlasting King,

  721. there is everlasting hope,

  722. hope that extends

  723. beyond death.

  724. Here is hope

  725. that is solid,

  726. it is death proof.

  727. In Jesus

  728. comes the blessing

  729. of God.

  730. To trust in Jesus

  731. means to enjoy

  732. life and relationship

  733. with God.

  734. It means that we

  735. enter into a covenant

  736. relationship with God,

  737. which means that

  738. his steadfast love,

  739. his faithful love,

  740. is now guaranteed

  741. to us.

  742. And this promise

  743. extends

  744. to all

  745. nations,

  746. whoever we are,

  747. wherever we're from,

  748. is a call to believe

  749. and to trust.

  750. And in the coming

  751. of Jesus,

  752. the promised seed,

  753. he brings the salvation

  754. of God.

  755. It's the message

  756. of the cross.

  757. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  758. speaks of Jesus

  759. winning

  760. a triumphant

  761. victory

  762. over sin

  763. and darkness

  764. at the cross.

  765. That by his death

  766. and through his resurrection,

  767. he has disarmed

  768. the power

  769. of evil.

  770. That for those

  771. who are dead

  772. in our sins,

  773. we are made alive

  774. with Christ.

  775. For those deserving

  776. to be condemned,

  777. Jesus took

  778. that condemnation.

  779. He took the record

  780. of all our wrongdoings.

  781. It was nailed

  782. to the cross.

  783. The price is paid

  784. in full

  785. by faith in him.

  786. We have freedom.

  787. There is hope

  788. in the coming

  789. of the perfect king.

  790. Here's a second thread

  791. that we need to pull on.

  792. Verses 10 and 11.

  793. It's connected to the idea

  794. of new beginnings.

  795. I will provide a place

  796. for my people,

  797. Israel,

  798. and will plant them

  799. so that they can have

  800. a home of their own

  801. and no longer be disturbed.

  802. End of verse 11.

  803. I will also give you rest

  804. from all your enemies.

  805. In the world

  806. that we live in

  807. right now,

  808. I imagine

  809. we all experience

  810. in different ways

  811. this sort of tension.

  812. we see

  813. beauty

  814. in our world.

  815. We see beauty

  816. within creation.

  817. We see beauty

  818. in one another.

  819. But we also

  820. see brokenness,

  821. tragedy,

  822. despair.

  823. There is this tension

  824. where we all have

  825. this longing

  826. for restoration

  827. and governments

  828. and organizations

  829. and individuals

  830. are plowing

  831. energy

  832. and billions

  833. of pounds

  834. to try and bring

  835. restoration.

  836. We have this tension

  837. where deep down

  838. we also sense

  839. something of human

  840. weakness.

  841. That we can't

  842. actually bring in

  843. the world

  844. we all want

  845. as much

  846. as we would love

  847. to.

  848. And so this

  849. promise

  850. comes as good news.

  851. It speaks

  852. of a kingdom

  853. established

  854. by God

  855. which brings

  856. good news

  857. for his people.

  858. It speaks

  859. of a restored

  860. creation.

  861. It speaks

  862. of God's people

  863. living in a world

  864. of peace

  865. and rest

  866. and where God

  867. is present.

  868. Now we pull

  869. on that thread

  870. that leads us

  871. again back

  872. to promises

  873. given to Abraham

  874. in Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  875. chapter 12.

  876. Abraham was told

  877. to leave

  878. his home,

  879. his family,

  880. to leave everything

  881. and to go

  882. to the place

  883. that God

  884. had promised him.

  885. The promised land.

  886. And in the promised land

  887. God's people

  888. were to be settled

  889. in this place

  890. that God

  891. had for them

  892. knowing that God

  893. was with them

  894. ruling over them

  895. for their good.

  896. It's a theme

  897. that pulls us

  898. all the way back

  899. again to the

  900. Garden of Eden

  901. to life as it was

  902. in the beginning

  903. creation,

  904. life for Adam

  905. and Eve.

  906. They were planted.

  907. They were planted

  908. in God's

  909. perfect garden.

  910. And they were planted

  911. in this perfect place

  912. and God was there.

  913. They were enjoying

  914. perfect friendship

  915. with their God.

  916. In the land,

  917. the Garden of Eden,

  918. they enjoyed

  919. deep rest.

  920. In fact,

  921. their very first

  922. full day

  923. as people created

  924. in the image of God

  925. was a day

  926. of rest.

  927. To share with God

  928. his enjoyment

  929. of the perfect world

  930. that he had made,

  931. to enjoy

  932. perfect relationship

  933. relationship with God,

  934. to live lives

  935. of worship.

  936. We were made

  937. for this rest.

  938. Don't we often

  939. find ourselves

  940. restless,

  941. frustrated,

  942. longing?

  943. Then we hear

  944. Jesus say,

  945. come to me

  946. and I will give you

  947. rest.

  948. He is inviting us

  949. into the life

  950. that we were made

  951. for.

  952. King Jesus,

  953. in his victorious

  954. work,

  955. opens up

  956. the way to

  957. paradise for us.

  958. Remember his words

  959. to the thief

  960. on the cross?

  961. That thief

  962. who turned

  963. and in his last

  964. hours recognized

  965. recognized

  966. that Jesus

  967. had done nothing

  968. wrong,

  969. that he was righteous

  970. and he was a king

  971. with a kingdom?

  972. As he turned

  973. to Jesus

  974. and said,

  975. remember me

  976. when you come

  977. into your kingdom?

  978. Jesus turned

  979. to him

  980. and said,

  981. today

  982. you'll be

  983. with me

  984. in paradise.

  985. Jesus

  986. is the way

  987. home

  988. to God.

  989. To enjoy

  990. life with

  991. God himself,

  992. we begin

  993. to experience

  994. it here,

  995. but we look

  996. forward

  997. the remains

  998. for the people

  999. of God,

  1000. a Sabbath rest

  1001. still to come.

  1002. We look forward

  1003. to eternal rest,

  1004. eternal peace,

  1005. an eternal sense

  1006. of being home

  1007. with our God.

  1008. And that's the

  1009. promise of the

  1010. gospel,

  1011. that King Jesus

  1012. who today

  1013. is ruling

  1014. and reigning

  1015. over all things

  1016. as King of Heaven,

1017. one day at the end

  1018. of history,

  1019. the time that God

  1020. appoints,

  1021. he'll return

  1022. and he'll make

  1023. everything new.

  1024. Sin

  1025. and evil

  1026. and death

  1027. will be destroyed.

  1028. A kingdom

  1029. of justice

  1030. and peace

  1031. will be established

  1032. that will last

  1033. forever

  1034. for all those

  1035. who trust

  1036. in him.

  1037. New beginnings

  1038. because of

  1039. a perfect king.

  1040. One more thread

  1041. to pull on.

  1042. It's the thread

  1043. that brings us

  1044. to consider

  1045. God's grace.

  1046. The idea of grace

  1047. runs counter

  1048. to culture.

  1049. We have so many

  1050. invitations

  1051. and encouragements

  1052. to make a name

  1053. for yourself.

  1054. That relentless

  1055. call to prove

  1056. yourself

  1057. in a relationship

  1058. in the workplace.

  1059. And it can be

  1060. exciting,

  1061. but it can also

  1062. be exhausting.

1063. It can be a call

  1064. that can lead us

  1065. to pride,

  1066. making a name

  1067. for ourselves.

  1068. And if we bring

  1069. that mentality,

  1070. that mindset

  1071. into religion,

  1072. thinking,

  1073. I must prove

  1074. myself so I can

  1075. save myself,

  1076. it is death.

  1077. It's deathly.

  1078. It's impossible.

  1079. God is too holy

1080. and we are too sinful.

  1081. The gap

  1082. is simply

  1083. too wide.

  1084. But God's grace

  1085. comes.

  1086. God's grace

  1087. comes here

  1088. in verse 9.

  1089. David wanted

  1090. to do something

  1091. for God.

  1092. God says,

1093. I have been with you

  1094. wherever you have

  1095. gone

  1096. and now

  1097. I will

  1098. make your name

  1099. great.

  1100. David,

  1101. I will make

  1102. for you

  1103. a great name.

  1104. And again,

  1105. this phrase

  1106. takes us back.

  1107. Takes us back

  1108. to Abraham,

  1109. takes us back

  1110. to Genesis 12,

  1111. actually takes us

  1112. back one chapter

  1113. earlier

  1114. to the Tower

  1115. of Babel.

  1116. You read

  1117. Genesis chapter 11,

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

1118. you come to the Tower

  1119. of Babel,

  1120. you find

  1121. the people

  1122. on the earth

  1123. instead of scattering

  1124. to spread

  1125. the glory of God

  1126. to the far reaches

  1127. of the world,

  1128. they gather together

  1129. in defiance

  1130. of God

  1131. and in an act

  1132. of pride

  1133. and rebellion

  1134. they build this city

  1135. then they want

  1136. to build this tower

  1137. so that we might

  1138. make a name

  1139. for ourselves.

  1140. God scatters

  1141. them in judgment

  1142. but God's

  1143. gracious response

  1144. is to speak

  1145. to Abraham

  1146. and to call

  1147. Abraham

  1148. and to say

  1149. Abraham,

  1150. I will make

  1151. your name

  1152. great.

  1153. There's grace

  1154. and from Abraham's

  1155. family,

  1156. blessing

  1157. to the nations

  1158. and now

  1159. we understand

  1160. that God

  1161. is raising

  1162. up a king

  1163. Abraham's line,

  1164. David's line,

  1165. who will bless

  1166. the nations,

  1167. who will extend

  1168. the grace of God.

  1169. There is grace

  1170. here in the promise

  1171. from God himself

  1172. to David,

  1173. I will establish

  1174. a house for you,

  1175. I will raise

  1176. up your offspring,

1177. I'm going to do it.

  1178. the God of grace

  1179. provides

  1180. the king

  1181. who will rule

  1182. and reign

  1183. forever.

  1184. The God of grace

  1185. establishes

  1186. the kingdom

  1187. that is everlasting,

  1188. establishes

  1189. a king

  1190. who forever

  1191. knows God's love

  1192. because he is

  1193. the eternal

  1194. son of God.

  1195. And the message

  1196. of the gospels

  1197. is Jesus

  1198. is this king

  1199. declared by the angels

  1200. as the savior,

  1201. as the Christ,

  1202. the anointed one,

  1203. the Messiah,

  1204. the Lord,

  1205. declared by God

  1206. the father

  1207. at his baptism

  1208. to be the beloved

  1209. son with whom

  1210. the father

  1211. is well pleased.

  1212. And even as we

  1213. turn to the cross

  1214. and think about

  1215. the message

  1216. of the cross,

  1217. Jesus,

  1218. the righteous

  1219. king,

  1220. the promised

  1221. king,

  1222. who will be

  1223. flogged,

  1224. who will be

  1225. killed,

  1226. though he has

  1227. done nothing

  1228. wrong,

  1229. in the place

  1230. of those

  1231. who have sinned,

  1232. in the place

  1233. of lawbreakers.

  1234. But as 2 Samuel 7

  1235. also anticipates,

  1236. this king will be

  1237. raised up.

  1238. And as we read

  1239. our Bibles,

  1240. we discover

  1241. Jesus was raised up.

  1242. He was raised up

  1243. from the dead

  1244. on the third day.

  1245. His disciples

  1246. saw him raised up

  1247. to glory where he

  1248. now sits on the

  1249. throne of heaven.

  1250. And he has been

  1251. raised up to receive

  1252. the name that is

  1253. above every name,

  1254. that the name of

  1255. Jesus,

  1256. every knee should

  1257. bow and every tongue

  1258. confess that Jesus

  1259. Christ is Lord.

  1260. We have this promise

  1261. from God,

1262. who is a God of grace,

  1263. that he will send

  1264. a king who is a

  1265. gift of grace,

  1266. who extends grace,

  1267. who says to us,

  1268. you don't have to

  1269. try and save yourself

  1270. or prove yourself,

1271. come to me and be

  1272. saved.

1273. Come to me and find

  1274. forgiveness.

1275. Come to me and find

  1276. rest.

  1277. Let's close very

  1278. briefly by thinking

  1279. about a personal

  1280. response.

  1281. God's storyline of

  1282. salvation weaves

  1283. together wonderful

  1284. threads and brings

  1285. them together in the

  1286. personal work of

  1287. Jesus, the promised

  1288. everlasting king.

  1289. Come back tonight,

  1290. we'll think about it

  1291. some more wonderful

  1292. theme to help us

1293. to see the glory of

  1294. God.

  1295. But Jesus fulfills

  1296. this promise to be

  1297. God with us.

  1298. Jesus is the king

  1299. who rescues.

  1300. Jesus is the king

  1301. who will return to

  1302. restore the world

  1303. we all want.

1304. He is the one who

  1305. brings salvation and

  1306. life with God for

  1307. sinners.

1308. He is the one who

  1309. offers and promises

  1310. ultimate peace and

  1311. rest.

1312. He is the one who

  1313. provides the way

  1314. home to God.

  1315. 2 Samuel 7 gives

  1316. the promise.

  1317. Jesus brings an

  1318. out-of-this-world

  1319. fulfillment.

  1320. It's hope and

  1321. promise for each

  1322. one of us today.

  1323. So how to respond?

  1324. And what can we

  1325. learn as David

  1326. receives this

  1327. promise?

  1328. We didn't read

  1329. these verses, but

  1330. I'm going to read

  1331. them now.

  1332. Three responses,

  1333. three verses.

  1334. As David gets

  1335. this promise, he

  1336. turns to God in

  1337. prayer.

  1338. The first response

  1339. I think that this

  1340. calls for is the

  1341. response of worship.

  1342. We hear it from

  1343. David.

  1344. King David went in

  1345. and sat before the

  1346. Lord and he said,

  1347. Who am I,

  1348. Sovereign Lord,

  1349. and what is my

  1350. family that you've

  1351. brought me thus

  1352. far?

  1353. Let the promises

  1354. of God about

  1355. Jesus the king

  1356. produce a sense

  1357. of wonder at his

  1358. mercy and his

  1359. goodness.

  1360. That the king of

  1361. the universe

  1362. commits himself

  1363. to tiny people,

  1364. sinful people like

  1365. us, to raise us

  1366. to glory, should

  1367. provoke the

  1368. response of

  1369. worship.

  1370. Second response,

  1371. verse 21,

  1372. David recognizes,

  1373. For the sake of

  1374. your word and

  1375. according to your

  1376. will you have done

  1377. this great thing and

  1378. made it known to

  1379. your servant.

  1380. Humility.

  1381. As we consider the

  1382. wonder of all that

1383. God has done for us,

  1384. shouldn't it lead us

  1385. to humility?

  1386. As we consider

  1387. ourselves, we think

  1388. about the state of

  1389. our hearts and our

  1390. lives, our weakness,

  1391. our inability, that

  1392. we would come with

  1393. empty hands to the

  1394. king of grace, to

  1395. receive forgiveness, to

  1396. receive salvation, to

  1397. enter into new

  1398. life.

  1399. The last response, I

  1400. think that these

  1401. promises of the

  1402. wonderful king calls

  1403. for is the response

  1404. of faith.

  1405. Listen to David in

  1406. verse 25,

  1407. And now, Lord God,

  1408. keep forever the

  1409. promise you have

  1410. made concerning

  1411. your servant and

  1412. his house.

  1413. Do as you

  1414. promised.

  1415. David knows that

  1416. promise is huge,

  1417. but he also knows

  1418. that God who promises

  1419. is faithful, and he

  1420. will do it.

1421. How do you and I

  1422. today know that God

  1423. is faithful to keep

  1424. his promises?

  1425. Because he sent

  1426. Jesus to be this

  1427. king.

1428. We see it in his

  1429. perfect life, we see

  1430. it in his sacrificial

1431. death, we see it in

  1432. the glory of his

  1433. resurrection.

  1434. He is this king.

  1435. And he calls for

  1436. believing trust.

  1437. He calls us to

  1438. accept God's

  1439. promises for

  1440. ourselves.

1441. And he calls us to

  1442. bow, to confess.

  1443. Jesus is my

  1444. Lord.

  1445. Jesus is my

  1446. king.

  1447. Let's pray

  1448. together.

  1449. Lord, our God,

  1450. we thank you for

  1451. the great storyline

  1452. of salvation

  1453. woven throughout

  1454. the pages of

  1455. the Bible.

  1456. people.
