  1. Let's pray. Bow our heads in prayer.

  2. Father, it's snowy, it's cold.

  3. We thank you that we can be where it's warm and where it's not snowing.

  4. We ask, Lord, that you would help us to know deeply the truth of your word,

  5. the truth of your gospel, and how we should then live,

  6. given that the gospel is truly true.

  7. Father, bring this home to our hearts this morning.

  8. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. So quite a few years ago, one of my children started to have very severe breathing problems one evening.

  11. And she has an asthma problem.

  12. We knew that she had an asthma problem.

  13. She was quite young, very, very young.

  14. But her breathing problems, even when we gave her puffers, it didn't fix things.

  15. Things just got worse.

  16. And so we eventually decided that I had to take her to the hospital.

  17. We didn't call the ambulance.

  18. I drove her to the hospital.

  19. And she continued to go downhill, actually.

  20. And it felt afterwards I discovered that it was a bit of touch and go

  21. as to whether they were actually going to be able to save her life.

  22. But I can't remember if it was the day after a very, very hard night or two days after two hard nights.

  23. I'd been sleeping at the hospital, sleeping in quotation marks on a chair beside my daughter's bed.

  24. But she had turned the corner.

  25. Still not better, but she turned the corner.

  26. The things were looking good.

  27. The machines and the trend lines were going in good directions now.

  28. And I went down to the cafeteria of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario to get a muffin or something like that.

  29. And no surprise, a cup of coffee, a very big one because I was very tired.

  30. And as I'm leaving the cafeteria, I bump into somebody who was a regular, occasional-slash-regular member of the church whom I knew.

  31. And I had forgotten that this guy attended the church.

  32. But not only was he a doctor at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario,

  33. he was actually the head of a department in the hospital.

  34. So he was sort of a big mucky-muck guy.

  35. And he said, George, what are you doing here?

  36. And I just told him.

  37. And he said, oh, is she all right?

  38. And I said, oh, yeah, it looks like things are going well.

  39. And he said, are they treating you well and her well?

  40. And I said, yeah, I have no complaints.

  41. They're doing a great job.

  42. And he said, well, I'm going to come up and see her.

  43. Now, I don't know.

  44. Afterwards, I was wondering if he was thinking of this and this and this and all these other things.

  45. But he says he'll come up and see me.

  46. And I don't really sort of realize the significance of this until we get out of the hospital,

  47. the elevator at the floor that my daughter was on.

  48. And there happened to be a senior doctor walking by with a group of interns, obviously.

  49. And the doctor stopped suddenly and turned and said, I'll call him Andy.

  50. Andy, what are you doing here?

  51. And so Andy said to this doctor, whom we'll call Bob,

  52. Andy said, oh, you know, this is my really good friend.

  53. And he's also my pastor and his daughter's in your ward.

  54. And all of a sudden, Andy got a Bob, the doctor.

  55. They got very concerned.

  56. I found out that this Dr. Bob was actually the doctor who was in charge of that whole department.

  57. That's, I guess, why she was really surprised when a doctor from another apartment came onto her floor

  58. to see one of her patients.

  59. And so Bob got instantly concerned as to whether I was being treated right.

  60. You could just tell from the body language, like, oh, is everything going all right?

  61. Are you being treated all right?

  62. And I said, no, I'm fine.

  63. There's no problems.

  64. And then Bob says to me, well, listen, at any time while you're here,

  65. if you have any problems, this is my name.

  66. The nurses know how to reach me.

  67. You get a hold of me.

  68. I'll make sure things are put right.

  69. And then, of course, the head of the department from then on came and visited my daughter.

  70. Now, why am I telling you this story?

  71. What I've described is something which is just very, very deeply human.

  72. People look after their friends and sort of just their tribe, their friend.

  73. They look after each other often.

  74. And I don't know if this doctor from our congregation, Andy,

  75. he sort of wanted to guarantee that I would get treated really well by making an appearance.

  76. Like, I don't know all that, the politics, and I never asked him.

  77. And he's no longer with us.

  78. But we got even better treatment after that.

  79. But here's the thing.

  80. It's very, very deeply human to do something like what this doctor did.

  81. And she sees an important person in the hospital.

  82. I'm that person's friend and pastor.

  83. And you look after each other.

  84. That's what you do.

  85. That's human.

  86. Now, I mention this because it's actually a dynamic of what's going on in the story.

  87. And it's a very important dynamic in this story.

  88. And it's one of the reasons why this dynamic which I'm describing,

  89. which when I point it out to you, you'll see that it's there in the story.

  90. And it's one of the reasons why the Christian faith transformed the world.

  91. Like, it's very hard maybe for some of you to believe that,

  92. but the Christian faith transformed the world.

  93. Well, let's see how.

  94. If you turn in your Bibles to Mark chapter 10, sorry, Mark chapter 14.

Mark 10 chapter mention Mark 14 chapter mention

  95. And we're going to be reading from verse 53 on.

  96. Mark 14, 53 on.

  97. We're preaching through the book of Mark.

  98. And that's why we come to this story.

  99. And I'm going to do, once again, the same type of technique I did last week.

  100. Imagine this is a European, some Europeans or the BBC or some British group has decided to put all of this into a bit of a series,

  101. a limited edition series.

  102. And so there's a succession of episodes to tell the overarching story.

  103. And you might or might not remember, but last week ended on a cliffhanger.

  104. I'm watching The Last of Us.

  105. And those of you who've been following that along, last week ended with a cliffhanger.

  106. And there's a similar cliffhanger that happens here.

  107. The story ends with all of Jesus' friends abandoning him and a group of men armed with clubs and other weapons have seized him.

  108. And they've carted him away in the night.

  109. And now the story continues.

  110. And so we'll call this first scene, scene one, the right quorum.

  111. Scene one, the right quorum.

  112. And it's verse 53.

  113. And here's how it goes.

  114. And they led Jesus to the high priest.

  115. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.

  116. Now, you can listen to my last two sermons.

  117. I'm not going to go into the significance of naming the chief priests, the elders and the scribes.

  118. But here we see now the high priest.

  119. We know now, in fact, later on, it's covered up in our translation.

  120. It's the Sanhedrin.

  121. And there's one high priest and 70 other members that make up this gathering.

  122. I mean, but there's, and by the way, when it says here, they led Jesus to the high priest, it's not as if they led Jesus there.

  123. This is where you need to, you know, the filmmaker would have to make sure that the episode shows this.

  124. They lead him there with clubs, seized.

  125. So they've seized him to make sure he can't run away.

  126. They're all armed, heavily armed.

  127. Jesus is in the midst of them.

  128. And that's how they lead him to the high priest.

  129. And when it says all, and this is going to be important throughout the story, wherever you see the word all or whole,

  130. they don't mean every single priest and every single scribe and every single elder.

  131. And they don't even mean every single one who's on the Sanhedrin.

  132. What they're referring to is basically that a quorum has been reached.

  133. And ancient people who wrote at that time that we have their records of what they wrote,

  134. we know that in those days a quorum was the high priest and 22 other people.

  135. And if you had the high priest and 22 other people, you had everybody there.

  136. You had all, in a sense, that's what all refers to.

  137. And that's later on what whole refers to.

  138. And when they say the decision is unanimous, that's what it's referring to.

  139. It's a valid meaning on one level of the Sanhedrin.

  140. They can make decisions.

  141. And that fits in with why in other of the ancient biographies it says that some people remember the council

  142. and they wouldn't have voted against this.

  143. Well, that's not a discounting of what's happening right here.

  144. The quorum has been reached.

  145. And here's the thing with my introductory story.

  146. It's a normal human thing to care for your group, so to speak.

  147. And my parishioner that I've called, Andy, he sees me there in the hospital.

  148. He knows I shouldn't be there.

  149. And he wants to make sure, I mean, he is a doctor.

  150. He loves children.

  151. He's a doctor because he loves to see children made well.

  152. So he has both a natural human desire to go see my daughter.

  153. But at the same time, he's wanting to make sure I'm carried well.

  154. But that can also get twisted so that we make sure the right people, our people, are in positions of power and authority.

  155. And the high priest is manufacturing and the others are manufacturing this.

  156. And they might say beforehand, we're going to be gathering people together.

  157. We've got to get our people there.

  158. We've got to get our people there who are sound.

  159. Right?

  160. You know, don't bring in Fred or, you know, or Smith.

  161. They're on our side.

  162. But, you know, they get wishy-washy and caught up on legalities and all of that stuff.

  163. And don't bring in, you know, Abe.

  164. And don't bring in, you know, Sam.

  165. Because, you know, I don't know, they're a bit sympathetic to it.

  166. And we want to make sure our people, the sound people, from our point of view, are there.

  167. And that's the dynamic that's going on.

  168. And they're successful.

  169. They're successful.

  170. So the right quorum is there.

  171. So now the next bit is sort of odd.

  172. And if, once again, we were doing this as a television series, we're setting up something here that's going to be central to the very next episode.

  173. The next episode seems to be taken aside from the storyline.

  174. And it's setting it up with this small incident.

  175. But there's also something very important for us to notice in it.

  176. So scene two is he knows better with a question mark.

  177. He knows better.

  178. And it's verse 54.

  179. And it goes like this.

  180. And Peter had followed Jesus at a distance right into the courtyard of the high priest.

  181. And Peter was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire.

  182. Now, when we'd last seen Peter, he'd fled.

  183. Obviously, he has a bit of a change of heart.

  184. And he follows along at a distance.

  185. And now he comes right into the courtyard.

  186. Now, why do I call it he knows better?

  187. This is deeply human.

  188. Deeply, deeply human.

  189. Jesus has warned Peter that he, Peter, is going to deny Jesus three times before the cock crows, before the rooster crows.

  190. Although there's a different way to understand that, which we'll talk about next week.

  191. And Peter has seen that every time Jesus speaks, Jesus is correct.

  192. And so Peter here thinks, I know better.

  193. Because what does he do?

  194. He actually goes and sits with the guards.

  195. Like, you know, this is actually just saying, I know better.

  196. Like, Peter, Jesus is going to be wrong.

  197. I'm not going to deny him.

  198. And, you know, maybe that would be hard for Peter to deny him if he'd gone and just hidden off somewhere by himself for the night.

  199. You know, trying to pray and screw up the curds and things.

  200. But he, in a sense, tempts fate.

  201. He tests the limits.

  202. Right?

  203. And he actually goes right amongst a whole pile of guards.

  204. Some of whom are going to recognize him.

  205. And who are going to ask him if, you know, he's tempting.

  206. You know, he's like, not that any of this happened to any of our, any of us when we were young.

  207. And our parent says to us, well, why did you go to that party?

  208. Or why did you go off with those people?

  209. Didn't you know that if you went with those people, they were going to do this and that was going to happen?

  210. Well, you did.

  211. But you thought you could sort of go up to the line but not cross the line?

  212. It's very deeply human.

  213. That's what Peter thought he could do.

  214. You could go up to the line but not cross it.

  215. And as we'll see next week, he crosses it.

  216. But in the meantime, something also deeply human, weirdly human, happens next.

  217. See, one of the things about this story is that everything about it could easily be filmed in a realistic series.

  218. It's something, once again, which is weirdly human that we don't often think about.

  219. And that's the next thing.

  220. It's scene number three, the show trial.

  221. Some of you know what a show trial is.

  222. The show trial, verse 55, and it goes like this.

  223. Now, the chief priests and the whole council, that's the Sanhedrin literally,

  224. were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.

  225. Now, a show trial is something that comes from the Soviet era where basically everybody knew that the person was going to be found guilty.

  226. Everybody knows that in advance.

  227. But they go through the appearance of having a legal trial.

  228. But everything about it is a sham.

  229. The person's going to probably confess, has been beaten or tortured until they confess,

  230. or threatened with the death of their loved ones until they confess.

  231. Everybody knows, involved in the trial, that there's no justice there.

  232. It's all just appearance.

  233. But, you know, here's the thing.

  234. This is what's so deeply human about it.

  235. We can say, oh, you know, those terrible Soviet Union or, you know, other more modern examples of it, right?

  236. Because they're not seeking a trial to figure out what happened.

  237. You know, look what it says again.

  238. They're seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death.

  239. And that's what they're seeking to do.

  240. But we all know that they just want to have Jesus killed, but they're looking for evidence, so to speak.

  241. And, you know, most people won't just come out and say, yeah, that's a lie.

  242. I did that just because I'm selfish.

  243. And I just did it, you know, because I don't like you.

  244. I hate you.

  245. Nobody says that.

  246. Well, they say, well, you know, there's this reason and there's this circumstance and I'm pursuing justice and I'm doing this and I'm doing that.

  247. Like, that's a deeply human thing.

  248. We rationalize our actions.

  249. In fact, it's almost as if in Genesis 3, which is whether or not you believe it's literally true,

  250. and I actually believe that it's literally true,

  251. it's deeply psychologically true that we human beings continue to love fig leaves.

  252. That after we've done something wrong, and the people who matter know we've done something wrong,

  253. we like to have some type of fig leaf to try to cover that, the revelation that we've done something wrong.

  254. We like to have things to make it look like we're, it was really good.

  255. And we see that in Canada.

  256. We see it in our own lives.

  257. It's something deeply human.

  258. So they are going to have a pretend process, but everything about this is wrong.

  259. If you'll notice here in the previous story, it said that Jesus, or the previous verse,

  260. that Peter had followed them into the courtyard of the high priest.

  261. Like, this is a trial happening in the middle of the night,

  262. and it's happening not where the Sanhedrin has their meeting, nor in the high court,

  263. but in the high priest's personal residence, where guards are out front,

  264. to make sure that inconvenient, nasty people who might want to give other type of testimony

  265. definitely can't even appear.

  266. Everything about this stinks, but they still want to make it look like there's evidence.

  267. They still want to make it look like they're just concerned with the truth.

  268. They have valid reasons, but everything about it stinks.

  269. So how does it work out for them?

  270. Well, we already had a hint, but how does it work out for them?

  271. The next scene is scene four, the false witnesses mess up.

  272. That's what it's called, the false witnesses mess up.

  273. Verses 56 to 59.

  274. I mean, there's another problem.

  275. We're in the middle of the night.

  276. Like, where do these witnesses show up?

  277. Like, how is it that a quorum shows up?

  278. Like, these things don't naturally happen, right?

  279. Everything about this is a conspiracy.

  280. The right people are there.

  281. It's all a show trial.

  282. It's all a stage, but they still mess up.

  283. Verse 56.

  284. For many bore false witness against Jesus, but their testimony did not agree.

  285. And some stood up and bore false witness against Jesus, saying,

  286. We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands,

  287. and in three days I will build another not made with hands.

  288. Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.

  289. Now, what's going on here is probably the high priest who's organizing this whole thing,

  290. along with a couple of his buddies.

  291. He's going to himself, like, we got morons as false witnesses.

  292. Like, he's probably going to later on give a tongue lashing to some of his assistants and aides,

  293. because they got complete idiots and fools to come up and do the false witness.

  294. Like, can't you even do something as simple as this correctly?

  295. And then what we see in the text is actually a very important moment for us as Christians.

  296. Notice here in verse 58 it says,

  297. We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands,

  298. and in three days I will build another not made with hands.

  299. And you wonder, well, where's the contradiction in that?

  300. But here's what's gone on.

  301. Mark has summarized their argument better than they could put it.

  302. That's what he's done.

  303. They probably have bits and pieces of this, and the bits and pieces are contradictory.

  304. They're maybe internally contradictory and contradict each other,

  305. and they're not able to put it together.

  306. They can't get their lie straight.

  307. And Mark has summarized their argument and stated it really clearly, better than they could.

  308. Now, just as a bit of an aside, how on earth would Mark know this?

  309. Well, here's the problem.

  310. And this goes right to the heart of why it is that we're even reading a text like this 2,000 years later.

  311. They had a perfect plan.

  312. The chief priests had an absolutely perfect, brilliant plan.

  313. Who knows how many other times they had successfully got something like this off.

  314. There was just one hugely inconvenient fact.

  315. That dang Jesus rose from the dead.

  316. Like, that massively screwed up all of their calculations.

  317. When the tomb is empty, and Jesus appears alive, and he spends 40 days with them, teaching them.

  318. And that's separate from the fact that maybe some of these priests and others who are there later on become Christians

  319. and let people know what happens.

  320. Now, here's the thing.

  321. If you could put up the first point, Claire, that would be good.

  322. Since Jesus is the way and the truth and the life,

  323. the way of truth is solid and clear.

  324. And the way of the lie is vain, empty, complexity.

  325. You lie, and then people challenge you on it.

  326. You tell another couple of lies, and then later on you have to recount it.

  327. And now it's harder to remember your multiple lies than if you just actually tell the truth.

  328. I mean, that's just, that's been true time and time and time again.

  329. And the fact of the matter is, is if you're pursuing a lie, that is something vain,

  330. both in a sense vain that you'll never accomplish it,

  331. but also vain that it's something involving your own self-flattery.

  332. Lies are empty, and it just raises you into a whole area of complexity where you can't keep it straight.

  333. And you've just seen that with these people who want to give lying testimony.

  334. And their lying testimony are empty, and there's the complexity,

  335. and because of the complexity, they can't get their lies straight.

  336. And this, by the way, is when I said that, you know, when you're looking at these stories

  337. and you see how they fit, how quite literally,

  338. some guys and gals at Netflix or BBC or, you know, some European broadcasting thing,

  339. they could make these things into a realistic show.

  340. And why that is very, very important, and why it is that Christianity changed the world,

  341. is that the other religions and spiritualities of the world,

  342. truth is based in story and in myth and in feeling and in mystical experience,

  343. but not in real life.

  344. Not in real life.

  345. And the Christian claim is that this actually happened.

  346. Truth is in history. Truth is historical.

  347. And that, as that idea launches into the Roman Empire

  348. and then eventually into all of the other,

  349. into many other cultures in the world,

  350. then you start to realize that you, like, there's something to pursuing truth.

  351. And not just religious truth, but historical truth,

  352. and economic truth, and scientific truth,

  353. and technological truth, and moral truth.

  354. And you can see in our culture,

  355. where our culture increasingly is what you can describe validly as a post-truth society.

  356. Why?

  357. Because in our society increasingly,

  358. what matters is truth is connected to your feeling,

  359. to your story, or to your myth,

  360. and not in what is actually real.

  361. And as these things, in a sense,

  362. it's a return to ancient paganism,

  363. it's a return to many of the Eastern religions

  364. prior to the advent of Christianity,

  365. where people are always just as smart

  366. and always just as clever.

  367. And people never completely got lost.

  368. You can't live in the world without being concerned with true.

  369. You notice if your apples are stolen,

  370. because there's fewer than there were there.

  371. But Christianity, the Bible, Christ,

  372. introduces into human consciousness

  373. this idea,

  374. the Bible introduces this revolutionary idea

  375. that becomes a virus that infects the human race.

  376. Truth is solid and clear.

  377. It's historical.

  378. And you do not go just to story and myth and feeling

  379. to understand what's happening.

  380. You seek the truth.

  381. And the truth is solid and clear.

  382. And that's why Mark is able to summarize their lies

  383. better than they are.

  384. Because he's seeking the truth.

  385. Even the truth of what their accusation is,

  386. he seeks the truth.

  387. They seek lies and can't get it straight.

  388. Now, in a series,

  389. it's often the case,

  390. if you were doing this as a BBC thing or whatever,

  391. it's often the case that sometimes,

  392. in a subsequent episode,

  393. you revisit something from an earlier episode

  394. that just seemed to be a little bit of a small thing.

  395. And you spend the whole episode

  396. sort of trying to actually understand that small thing,

  397. because that small thing is actually very important.

  398. And that's how I'd like to approach this now.

  399. And that's the next scene,

  400. is scene five.

  401. And we go back to verse 58.

  402. Scene five, verse 58.

  403. And it's titled,

  404. The Ironic Ignorance of Lies.

  405. The Ironic Ignorance of Lies.

  406. Now, and look here,

  407. in verse 58 it goes,

  408. we heard him say,

  409. and here's how Mark has summarized

  410. what they were trying to get at.

  411. I will destroy this temple that is made with hands,

  412. and in three days I will build another,

  413. not made with hands.

  414. Now, this is one of the cases where

  415. the original,

  416. knowing the original language

  417. helps you to understand what's going on.

  418. And what's going on is that when it says temple,

  419. so first of all,

  420. Jesus didn't say this, by the way,

  421. but it's something Jesus would agree with.

  422. And the deep irony is,

  423. it's actually a summarizing,

  424. like the basic principle

  425. is a summary of the Torah,

  426. the Tanakh, Old Testament teaching.

  427. It's a fundamental summary

  428. of Genesis to Malachi.

  429. Now, applied to the temple,

  430. but it's actually a deeply biblical teaching.

  431. And interestingly enough,

  432. it's a teaching that secularists in Canada

  433. and atheists actually believe as well.

  434. And here's what is going on.

  435. I will destroy this temple,

  436. and in the original language,

  437. the word temple here

  438. isn't just referring to the entire place,

  439. you know, where there's,

  440. you know, some residences

  441. and storehouses and places of prayer.

  442. It's referring to the most holy place

  443. and the holy of holies.

  444. That's what it's referring to.

  445. The very holy place

  446. where God is supposed to dwell

  447. and meets with the high priest

  448. only once a year with sacrifices

  449. and the holy of holies.

  450. And outside of that,

  451. only the high priest can go in

  452. after sacrifices,

  453. and it's where God dwells.

  454. So they say that Jesus said,

  455. I will destroy this holy place,

  456. this holy of holies.

  457. And here's what the claim is,

  458. that it's made with hands.

  459. And if you go back

  460. and you were to read

  461. what we call the Old Testament,

  462. what our Jewish friends

  463. called the Tanakh or the Torah,

  464. the way they describe idols

  465. are gods that are what?

  466. Made with hands.

  467. And if you go back

  468. and read the entire Old Testament,

  469. they say that's completely ridiculous.

  470. Why is it that you make something

  471. with your own hands

  472. and then you bow down

  473. and worship it?

  474. Like, and that's exactly

  475. what you would hear

  476. if you were to go

  477. down Rideau Street

  478. and down Bank Street

  479. and you would go to the bars

  480. and the places

  481. where people are having dim sum

  482. and they haven't gone to church

  483. and if you were to press them on it,

  484. they might eventually articulate it

  485. in some such way.

  486. I think it's completely crazy

  487. that people go to the synagogue,

  488. the temple, the mosque,

  489. the church,

  490. or anything like that.

  491. They're just taking ideas

  492. that they've made up themselves

  493. and then they sort of

  494. try to worship it

  495. and they want to get us worship it.

  496. And of course,

  497. that's just completely ridiculous.

  498. Like, you know,

  499. I make my, you know,

  500. we're just making your stuff up

  501. out of yourself.

  502. And so what they're saying

  503. is that the Holy of Holies

  504. is just made with hands.

  505. And then in three days,

  506. and Jesus does talk about this,

  507. I will build another

  508. and he does talk about

  509. this a little bit specifically.

  510. He will make another

  511. and he does talk about this.

  512. He's going to in fact say

  513. that the place where we meet with God

  514. is ultimately him.

  515. And when it says

  516. not made with hands,

  517. that, once again,

  518. if you go back to the Old Testament,

  519. that's what the contrast is.

  520. Idols are just stuff made by hands.

  521. There's wonderful texts in the Bible

  522. where the prophets mock

  523. the peoples of the world

  524. and say they go into a bush

  525. and they cut down a tree

  526. and they take half of the tree

  527. and they burn their game

  528. that they've caught

  529. and with the other half

  530. they make an idol

  531. and fall down and worship.

  532. Like, isn't that

  533. the most ridiculous thing

  534. in the world?

  535. We believe in the God

  536. who makes, in a sense,

  537. his kingdom

  538. and the holy of holies.

  539. It's not made with hands.

  540. It's made by God.

  541. If you could put up

  542. the second point,

  543. what humans have made

  544. to be holy

  545. is not holy.

  546. What the triune God

  547. has made to be holy

  548. is truly holy.

  549. See, here's where we now

  550. disagree with our secular friends.

  551. We say,

  552. we agree with you.

  553. We agree with you

  554. a thousand percent.

  555. You're completely right.

  556. If it's just people

  557. making up stuff

  558. out of their own heads,

  559. it doesn't matter

  560. how bespoke it is

  561. and how solemn

  562. we talk about it

  563. or the music

  564. or the effects

  565. or whatever.

  566. It's just stuff

  567. made up by hands.

  568. Just, you know,

  569. crap that people make

  570. and you shouldn't worship it.

  571. But what if

  572. there really is a God

  573. that does exist

  574. who has made certain things

  575. to be holy?

  576. He's done it.

  577. Not us.

  578. We just receive it.

  579. Well, you know,

  580. in fact,

  581. if we live in a world

  582. where nothing is ever made

  583. by the triune God

  584. and there's nothing

  585. that's actually

  586. really truly holy,

  587. then we live

  588. in a meaningless universe.

  589. And there is a part of us,

  590. and it's because

  591. we ultimately

  592. are made in the image

  593. of God,

  594. that longs

  595. to not live

  596. in a meaningless,

  597. empty universe.

  598. And so for many people,

  599. they don't understand

  600. that that sense

  601. that they make,

  602. that they have,

  603. which is very,

  604. very deep,

  605. is only made clear

  606. and understood

  607. in the gospel.

  608. Now,

  609. from his enemy's

  610. point of view,

  611. the question is,

  612. can this be fixed?

  613. Well, here we get

  614. to scene six.

  615. Scene six,

  616. which is entitled

  617. The Ironic Witness

  618. of the Leading Enemy.

  619. Right?

  620. So the last scene

  621. was called

  622. The Ironic

  623. Ignorance of Lies.

  624. They actually

  625. are on to something.

  626. But here we see

  627. this next scene

  628. is called

  629. The Ironic Witness

  630. of the Leading Enemy.

  631. Verses 60 to 61,

  632. and here's how it goes.

  633. And the high priest

  634. stood up in the midst,

  635. and in the original language,

  636. this is a dramatic

  637. moment of emphasis.

  638. He's been sitting,

  639. in a sense,

  640. like up here,

  641. running things,

  642. and now all of a sudden

  643. he leaves his place,

  644. goes right into the middle,

  645. face to face,

  646. right in the middle.

  647. And makes this thing.

  648. And the high priest

  649. stood up in the middle

  650. and asked Jesus,

  651. Have you no answer to make?

  652. What is it that these men

  653. testify against you?

  654. But Jesus remained silent

  655. and made no answer.

  656. Again,

  657. the high priest asked him,

  658. Are you the Christ,

  659. the Son of the Blessed?

  660. Are you the Christ,

  661. the Son of the Blessed?

  662. And Son of the Blessed

  663. means Son of God.

  664. Blessed is a way

  665. that they have avoided

  666. using the name of God,

  667. which had already developed

  668. as a habit

  669. in those days.

  670. And just to be clear,

  671. they understood

  672. in a way that

  673. we understand

  674. on one level,

  675. except that so many people

  676. in our culture

  677. now believe lies,

  678. right?

  679. That what is in,

  680. you know,

  681. we have at least

  682. one woman here

  683. in the congregation

  684. who's going to have a baby,

  685. and we all know

  686. that what is in that baby,

  687. what is in her womb,

  688. will not come out

  689. as a kitten

  690. or a dog.

  691. It is human.

  692. human.

  693. Humans beget humans.

  694. They have human nature.

  695. We know that,

  696. but we don't know that

  697. because our culture

  698. increasingly believes lies.

  699. And when you believe lies,

  700. you enter into vain,

  701. empty complexity.

  702. And vain,

  703. empty complexity

  704. is where evil grows.

  705. Where evil grows.

  706. So he's saying,

  707. are you the Messiah?

  708. Are you God,

  709. the Son of God?

  710. Are you claiming

  711. that you are God,

  712. that there is God the Father

  713. and God the Son?

  714. Are you claiming that,

  715. the high priest says?

  716. Now just so you know,

  717. there's a,

  718. I'm going to entitle

  719. this sermon,

  720. by the way,

  721. The Trial of God,

  722. Part 1.

  723. Then we're going to have

  724. an interlude,

  725. and then we're going to have

  726. The Trial of God,

  727. Part 2.

  728. And in a sense,

  729. The Trial of God,

  730. Part 1,

  731. is the trial of the committed

  732. and the engaged,

  733. and trial number two

  734. is the trial of the apotheists.

  735. People don't really give a hoot.

  736. People don't give a hoot.

  737. Apotheists.

  738. And what we see here

  739. is that they're going to need

  740. to have two things

  741. to convict Jesus,

  742. because there's going to have

  743. to be two trials,

  744. because they're not allowed

  745. to pass a death sentence

  746. on anybody.

  747. The Romans have to do that.

  748. So from their point of view,

  749. they want a charge of blasphemy,

  750. because by their law,

  751. blasphemy is a capital offense,

  752. and they can sentence

  753. Jesus to death.

  754. But they're also looking

  755. for something

  756. that the Romans will see

  757. as being worthy of death.

  758. And they're looking

  759. for two things,

  760. and the high priest,

  761. ironically,

  762. nails it.

  763. Are you the Messiah?

  764. Messiah.

  765. If Jesus says yes,

  766. Rome's got him.

  767. Because as far as they're concerned,

  768. the Messiah means

  769. a king,

  770. a ruler,

  771. who will overthrow the Romans

  772. and bring in Jewish rule

  773. over all the earth.

  774. If you say you're the Messiah,

  775. got you.

  776. And if you say

  777. you are God,

  778. the Son of God,

  779. you are guilty of blasphemy,

  780. the Romans don't give a hoot

  781. about that,

  782. but we give a hoot about it.

  783. You're deserving of death.

  784. And here we see something

  785. which is very, very, very,

  786. very important.

  787. You know, the Bible says

  788. that the demons know perfectly

  789. about who God is

  790. and about who Jesus is,

  791. yet it doesn't cause them

  792. to love him

  793. or to want to know him,

  794. but it only deepens their hatred.

  795. We often think

  796. that if we just know what's true,

  797. we'll submit to it.

  798. We'll want to follow it.

  799. We'll want to believe it.

  800. But that's, in fact,

  801. a very shallow view

  802. of human nature.

  803. Often, the more clearly we know,

  804. the more we hate.

  805. So will Jesus stay silent?

  806. Let's go to the next scene.

  807. Scene 7, verse 62.

  808. Truth, death, and vindication.

  809. And we're almost done.

  810. Truth, death, and vindication.

  811. Scene number 7, verse 62.

  812. It goes like this.

  813. And Jesus said, right,

  814. so the charge is,

  815. are you the Christ?

  816. That's the Messiah.

  817. Are you the Son of the Blessed?

  818. In other words,

  819. are you the Son of God?

  820. Are you God, the Son of God?

  821. And Jesus said,

  822. I am.

  823. Yes.

  824. He's been silent.

  825. He's been silent to all the lies

  826. and all the confusion

  827. and all the vain complexity.

  828. Now he says,

  829. yes, I am.

  830. And you will see

  831. the Son of Man,

  832. that's a semi-divine figure,

  833. now understood to be fully divine,

  834. seated at the right hand of God

  835. in the place of honor

  836. and coming later

  837. with the clouds of heaven.

  838. Now here's the thing.

  839. If you could put up

  840. the next point,

  841. Claire,

  842. it would be very helpful.

  843. This is very significant.

  844. On trial for his life,

  845. because that's what he is.

  846. He's on trial for his life.

  847. The Bishop of Ottawa,

  848. just a few months

  849. before we left

  850. the Diocese of Ottawa,

  851. called me in,

  852. improperly,

  853. probably illegally,

  854. on a Saturday afternoon

  855. to fire me.

  856. And he made a huge

  857. strategic mistake.

  858. He had a lawyer with him.

  859. I was very worried.

  860. I thought I was going to get fired

  861. and it would mess up us

  862. leaving the church

  863. and everything like that.

  864. But when I went in

  865. and I saw the lawyer,

  866. at that point in time,

  867. they didn't know

  868. that we had a lawyer.

  869. And I said to him,

  870. I see that you have

  871. a lawyer present.

  872. And my lawyer has told me

  873. to never be in a room

  874. alone with you

  875. when you have a lawyer

  876. and I don't.

  877. Here's his card.

  878. Your lawyer can call my lawyer

  879. and set up a time

  880. for us to have this meeting.

  881. Now I ended up answering

  882. a couple of questions.

  883. I'd been trained

  884. by another lawyer

  885. about what to say.

  886. But the point is,

  887. I avoided being fired.

  888. Jesus is on trial

  889. for his life.

  890. And here's the point.

  891. On trial for his life,

  892. Jesus testifies

  893. that he is both

  894. the Messiah

  895. and God,

  896. the Son of God.

  897. On trial

  898. for his life,

  899. he testifies

  900. publicly

  901. to his enemies

  902. that he is both

  903. the Messiah

  904. and God,

  905. the Son of God.

  906. If you could put up

  907. the next point as well.

  908. And here's the other thing

  909. which he is saying

  910. when he says,

  911. and you will see

  912. me at the right hand

  913. of God,

  914. the Father,

  915. and you will see me

  916. coming again

  917. with the clouds of heaven.

  918. There is an implication here

  919. that he knows

  920. that he is going to die

  921. and he's going to rise

  922. from the dead

  923. and he's going to ascend

  924. and he's going to return.

  925. The resurrection of Jesus

  926. is a vindication

  927. of who he is,

  928. what he accomplished,

  929. and what he taught.

  930. The resurrection of Jesus

  931. is a vindication

  932. of who he is,

  933. what he accomplished,

  934. what he taught.

  935. You know,

  936. there are some,

  937. I'm not going to go

  938. into all the details,

  939. there were quite a few times

  940. within the first

  941. ten years

  942. that I was a Christian

  943. where I almost gave up

  944. the Christian faith.

  945. And I have to tell you,

  946. it was,

  947. you know,

  948. my education

  949. at Carleton University

  950. and then going to

  951. an ultra, ultra,

  952. ultra liberal seminary.

  953. And I have to confess,

  954. you know,

  955. in heaven I'll discover

  956. that there was

  957. a little old lady,

  958. maybe Beryl,

  959. praying for me

  960. and that's why

  961. I didn't lose my faith.

  962. That's what I'll discover.

  963. But I will say to you

  964. that one of the things

  965. that helped me,

  966. and just,

  967. I think some of you

  968. have heard this before,

  969. but for me,

  970. if I was to stop

  971. being a Christian,

  972. I would be a nihilist.

  973. I think that's

  974. the best option.

  975. All things are permissible.

  976. There is no God.

  977. There is no meaning in life.

  978. And partly what stopped me

  979. from losing my faith

  980. was that I didn't see

  981. any middle ground

  982. beyond that,

  983. but the other thing was

  984. that Jesus just,

  985. dang it,

  986. he rose from the dead.

  987. And even though

  988. I might not know

  989. how to solve

  990. this intellectual problem

  991. or this dilemma

  992. or this moral thing,

  993. the fact of the matter is

  994. Jesus really did rise

  995. from the dead.

  996. And if that is the case,

  997. it vindicates

  998. that he is God,

  999. the son of God.

  1000. He is the Messiah.

  1001. It does vindicate

  1002. that he accomplished

  1003. something on the cross

1004. for me to make me

  1005. right with him

  1006. because that's what

  1007. he taught.

  1008. And it vindicates him.

  1009. It vindicates him.

  1010. And then almost

  1011. to the end,

1012. if you could put up

  1013. the final point,

  1014. Claire,

  1015. the only judgment

  1016. that matters

  1017. is the judgment

1018. made by the triune God.

  1019. The only judgment

  1020. that matters

  1021. is the judgment

1022. made by the triune God.

  1023. See,

  1024. this is the beauty

  1025. of the gospel,

  1026. is the beauty

  1027. of the gospel

  1028. is that what Jesus

  1029. taught is when we,

  1030. in a sense,

  1031. put our faith

  1032. and trust in him,

  1033. that what he's accomplished

  1034. for us,

  1035. his taking away

  1036. of our sin

  1037. and gifting us

  1038. his righteous life,

  1039. we know

  1040. what God's judgment

  1041. will be about us

  1042. because we are

  1043. in Christ.

  1044. and we will know

  1045. that Christ

  1046. has dealt

  1047. with everything

  1048. that needed

  1049. to be dealt

  1050. with in your life

  1051. and mine

  1052. so that the justice

  1053. of God

  1054. could be satisfied

  1055. and the mercy

  1056. of God

  1057. could be revealed.

1058. And so when we put

  1059. our faith

  1060. and trust in Christ,

  1061. we can know

  1062. with absolute certainty

  1063. that the only judgment

  1064. that matters

  1065. is made by him.

  1066. And he will say,

  1067. welcome my son

  1068. or welcome my daughter.

  1069. Just in closing,

  1070. I'll just read

  1071. the last few verses.

  1072. Scene number eight,

1073. how to prove yourself wrong.

1074. How to prove yourself wrong.

  1075. Verses 63 to 65.

  1076. And the high priest

  1077. tore his garments

  1078. and said,

  1079. what further witnesses

  1080. do we need?

1081. You have heard his blasphemy.

  1082. What is your decision?

  1083. And they all,

  1084. like trained seals,

  1085. said,

  1086. condemned him

  1087. as deserving death.

  1088. And then some began

  1089. to spit on him

  1090. and cover his face

  1091. and strike him

  1092. saying,

  1093. ha, ha, ha, ha,

  1094. prophesy that.

  1095. You can't prophesy anything.

  1096. Prophesy that.

  1097. And the guards

  1098. received him with blows.

  1099. If you go back

  1100. and you read

  1101. Mark chapter 10

    Mark 10:33

  1102. verse 33 and 34,

  1103. Jesus said

1104. that after he was condemned,

1105. he would be spit upon

  1106. and beaten with blows.

  1107. And I'm sorry,

  1108. those fools mocking

  1109. that he couldn't prophesy

  1110. fulfilled the prophecy

  1111. by what they did.

  1112. They made themselves foolish.

  1113. Invite you to stand.

1114. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

  1115. Father,

  1116. we confess

  1117. that we are human.

  1118. And Father,

  1119. for those of us

  1120. who are in Christ,

  1121. on one hand,

  1122. Father,

  1123. we know that

  1124. you have made us

  1125. born again.

1126. When we put our faith

  1127. and trust in Jesus,

1128. you made us born again.

  1129. And that Jesus

1130. is our hope of glory.

  1131. And that one day

  1132. we will stand

1133. before you face to face,

  1134. not based on

  1135. our own righteousness

  1136. or our own accomplishments,

  1137. but purely and utterly

  1138. because of the grace

1139. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1140. and his finished work

  1141. upon the cross

  1142. and our faith

  1143. and trust in him.

  1144. And even that,

  1145. Father,

1146. is a moving of your Holy Spirit

1147. to help us to do that.

  1148. And so,

  1149. Father,

  1150. we know

1151. that that is our destiny,

  1152. but there is still

  1153. a part of us,

  1154. Father,

  1155. that loves lies

1156. and doesn't love the truth.

  1157. And Father,

1158. we ask that you would

  1159. make the gospel

  1160. more and more real

  1161. to our heart,

  1162. to form us

  1163. to love truth,

  1164. to love true truth

  1165. and truth

  1166. in the spiritual world,

  1167. the aesthetic world,

  1168. the world of economics,

  1169. the world of science,

  1170. the world of justice,

  1171. just the world

  1172. of how it is,

  1173. that you,

  1174. Father,

  1175. more and more

  1176. would grip us

  1177. with the gospel

  1178. so that our desire,

  1179. our heart's desire

  1180. is to have

1181. eyes that see the truth

  1182. and a heart

  1183. that desires

  1184. not just the truth,

1185. but also to see the truth

  1186. within the context

  1187. of love and mercy

  1188. and grace,

  1189. a concern for justice,

  1190. true justice

1191. and true right and wrong,

  1192. all,

  1193. Father,

  1194. with a humbling knowledge

  1195. that we ourselves

  1196. are sinners

  1197. who need to be

  1198. redeemed by grace.

  1199. Father,

1200. we ask that you would

  1201. so grip us

  1202. with the gospel

  1203. that you would do

  1204. that work of sanctification

  1205. in our lives.

  1206. And Father,

  1207. if there are any

1208. who are hearing this message

  1209. who have not yet

1210. given their life to Christ,

  1211. that you would,

  1212. Father,

  1213. by your Holy Spirit,

  1214. help them to cross

  1215. that important line

  1216. where they

  1217. call out to you

  1218. that you,

  1219. Father,

  1220. would be their Father

  1221. in heaven

1222. as they put their faith

  1223. and trust in Jesus.

1224. And we ask all these things

1225. in the name of Jesus,

  1226. your Son,

  1227. and our Savior,

1228. and all God's people said,

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.
