  1. There are two scripture readings this morning are from the Gospels, and we read first of all

  2. from Luke's Gospel chapter 5. Luke's Gospel chapter 5, and we read together verses 1 to 11.

  3. Jesus is ministering in different places. He's wandering about. He has already done a lot of teaching and performed some miracles.

  4. So Luke chapter 5, verses 1 to 11.

    Luke 5:1–11

  5. On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,

  6. and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.

  7. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked them to put out a little from the land,

  8. and he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

  9. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,

  10. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.

  11. And Simon answered, Master, we toiled all night and took nothing,

  12. but at your word I will let down the nets.

  13. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish,

  14. and their nets were breaking.

  15. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them,

  16. and they came and filled both the boats so that they began to sink.

  17. But when Simon Peter saw it,

  18. he fell down at Jesus' knees saying,

  19. Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

  20. For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken.

  21. And so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.

  22. And Jesus said to Simon,

  23. Do not be afraid.

  24. From now on you will be catching men.

  25. And when they had brought their boats to land,

  26. they left everything and followed him.

  27. And our second reading is from the Gospel according to Mark, chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  28. And we read from the verse Mark 27.

  29. Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Cederae of Philippi.

  30. And on the way he asked his disciples,

  31. Who do people say that I am?

  32. And they told him,

  33. John the Baptist.

  34. And others say,

  35. Elijah.

  36. And others,

  37. one of the prophets.

  38. And they asked him,

  39. But who do you say that I am?

  40. Peter answered him,

  41. You are the Christ.

  42. And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

  43. Amen.

  44. This is the word of God.

  45. In an address in 1963,

  46. the then President of the United States, Richard Nixon, said,

  47. that the greatest event in human history happened

  48. when man walked upon the moon.

  49. The astronaut,

  50. Hale Irwin,

  51. chose to disagree.

  52. And he said,

  53. the greatest event in human history

  54. happened

  55. when God in Christ

  56. walked on the earth.

  57. And

  58. we're here this morning

  59. because

  60. we agree with Hale Irwin.

  61. And in recent weeks

  62. with Christians

  63. here in Edinburgh

  64. and across the globe,

  65. we've been celebrating

  66. the birth

  67. of the baby

  68. in the manger.

  69. And

  70. with so many

  71. different Christians,

  72. our minister

  73. has constantly

  74. been reminding us

  75. that the birth

  76. of the baby

  77. in the manger

  78. was neither

  79. the beginning

  80. nor the end

  81. of God's

  82. loving purposes

  83. for us.

  84. C.H. Spurgeon,

  85. the great Baptist preacher,

  86. said on one occasion,

  87. Jesus Christ

  88. is the arm

  89. and substance

  90. of the gospel.

  91. He is in himself

  92. all theology.

  93. He is the foundation

  94. of every

  95. precious truth.

  96. Christy Annette,

  97. it's about

  98. various

  99. other things

  100. as well,

  101. but essentially

  102. it is about

  103. Jesus.

  104. It's about

  105. Jesus.

  106. But who is he?

  107. He himself

  108. asked that question

  109. of the disciples

  110. when they were

  111. in Caesarea Philippi.

  112. Very important

  113. question

  114. because

  115. the scholars

  116. all tell us

  117. that

  118. once there was

  119. a confession,

  120. once

  121. Peter and the

  122. disciples

  123. recognized

  124. that he was

  125. the Messiah,

  126. the promised

  127. deliverer,

  128. the saviour,

  129. Jesus made

  130. his way

  131. down

  132. from the very

  133. north of Galilee

  134. down through

  135. Samaria,

  136. Judea,

  137. to Jerusalem

  138. and to the cross.

  139. He knew

  140. that he would

  141. leave witnesses

  142. there.

  143. But who was he?

  144. C.S. Lewis,

  145. the famous

  146. Christian

  147. apologist

  148. and

  149. Ulsterman

  150. once

  151. asked the

  152. question,

  153. what are we

  154. to make

  155. of Jesus?

  156. And he

  157. goes on to

  158. say,

  159. look,

  160. if Jesus

  161. of Nazareth,

  162. a historical

  163. figure,

  164. it's not just

  165. Christians who

  166. believe that

  167. this man

  168. Jesus was

  169. real.

  170. And

  171. both

  172. Jewish and

  173. Roman

  174. historians

  175. acknowledge

  176. there was

  177. such a

  178. man.

  179. They don't

  180. believe he

  181. was the

  182. son of

  183. God.

  184. But Lewis

  185. says,

  186. look,

  187. if he

  188. is who

  189. he says

  190. he was,

  191. the son

  192. of God,

  193. you know,

  194. he's able

  195. to forgive

  196. our sins.

  197. He's able

  198. to heal

  199. the sick.

  200. He's able

  201. to take

  202. us to

  203. heaven

  204. when our

  205. bodies die.

  206. Then

  207. we should

  208. bow before

  209. him.

  210. But if

  211. he's not,

  212. if he's

  213. a megalomaniac,

  214. you know,

  215. who lives

  216. in a fantasy

  217. world and

  218. he's on

  219. an ego

  220. trip,

  221. then we

  222. can just

  223. forget all

  224. about him.

  225. Now,

  226. fortunately,

  227. there are

  228. four biographies

  229. written of

  230. Jesus from

  231. the time in

  232. which he

  233. lived and

  234. walked on

  235. earth.

  236. Matthew,

  237. Mark,

  238. Luke and

  239. John.

  240. And

  241. between

  242. them,

  243. they answer

  244. for us

  245. the three

  246. big questions

  247. we all

  248. need to ask

  249. about Jesus.

  250. first of

  251. all,

  252. what was

  253. his life

  254. like?

  255. We know

  256. there was

  257. such a

  258. man,

  259. but what

  260. was his

  261. life

  262. like?

  263. Then,

  264. secondly,

  265. what was

  266. his life

  267. for?

  268. And

  269. finally,

  270. what has

  271. his life

  272. meant?

  273. What was

  274. his life

  275. like?

  276. Well,

  277. it was

  278. unique.

  279. It was

  280. difficult.

  281. It was

  282. demanding.

  283. It was

  284. incredibly

  285. full.

  286. I mean,

  287. the number

  288. of things

  289. that the

  290. gospel

  291. writers say

  292. he did

  293. and the

  294. words that

  295. he spoke,

  296. but John,

  297. at the end

  298. of his

  299. gospel,

  300. he said,

  301. look,

  302. there are

  303. many other

  304. things that

  305. Jesus did,

  306. the which,

  307. if they should

  308. all be written

  309. down,

  310. he said,

  311. I suppose

  312. all the

  313. books in

  314. the world

  315. couldn't

  316. contain

  317. what is

  318. written.

  319. And

  320. interestingly,

  321. after the

  322. stories of

  323. his birth,

  324. Jesus is

  325. only mentioned

  326. twice before

  327. he's an

  328. adult man

  329. in his

  330. thirties.

  331. Once,

  332. when he's

  333. forty days

  334. old,

  335. he's brought

  336. to the

  337. temple in

  338. Jerusalem,

  339. according to

  340. the Jewish

  341. traditions,

  342. and then

  343. when he was

  344. about twelve,

  345. he came up

  346. with his

  347. parents to

  348. Jerusalem to

  349. celebrate the

  350. feast of the

  351. Passover.

  352. But when he

  353. was about

  354. thirty,

  355. he began

  356. a roving,

  357. itinerant,

  358. preaching,

  359. teaching,

  360. healing,

  361. ministry,

  362. where he

  363. does miracles

  364. and he

  365. speaks,

  366. you know,

  367. constantly

  368. to the

  369. people.

  370. And then,

  371. as now,

  372. the judgments

  373. about him

  374. varied.

  375. You know,

  376. there was

  377. a judgment

  378. really of

  379. class.

  380. The people

  381. who lived

  382. in his

  383. village and

  384. lived round

  385. about,

  386. knew his

  387. background,

  388. the family

  389. he came

  390. from.

  391. When he

  392. went to

  393. the synagogue

  394. and opened

  395. the scriptures

  396. and began

  397. to expound

  398. them,

  399. they said,

  400. but isn't

  401. this the

  402. carpenter's

  403. son?

  404. You know,

  405. as if a

  406. man who

  407. worked with

  408. his hands

  409. couldn't

  410. know about

  411. God.

  412. And then

  413. there was

  414. the judgment

  415. of contempt.

  416. The religious

  417. leaders,

  418. the scribes,

  419. the Pharisees,

  420. you know,

  421. oh,

  422. look at him,

  423. he's a

  424. friend of

  425. publicans

  426. and sinners.

  427. You know,

  428. again,

  429. because he

  430. mixed with

  431. what we

  432. would call

  433. ordinary

  434. people,

  435. well,

  436. they weren't

  437. having any

  438. of that.

  439. But of course,

  440. there was a

  441. judgment of

  442. conviction.

  443. There were

  444. people who

  445. believed.

  446. We read how

  447. Peter said,

  448. you are the

  449. Christ,

  450. you're the

  451. Messiah.

  452. And at the

  453. cross,

  454. the Roman

  455. centurion

  456. said,

  457. truly,

  458. this man

  459. was the

  460. Son of

  461. God.

  462. But in

  463. all that he

  464. did,

  465. look,

  466. he was

  467. misunderstood

  468. even by

  469. his own

  470. family.

  471. He was

  472. deserted

  473. by his

  474. disciples.

  475. He was

  476. denied by

  477. his friends.

  478. He knew

  479. temptations

  480. almost beyond

  481. measure.

  482. You know,

  483. he knew

  484. hours of

  485. loneliness

  486. and what

  487. it felt

  488. like to

  489. be rejected.

  490. And yet,

  491. yet all

  492. through that,

  493. his sole

  494. concern was

  495. for the

  496. souls of

  497. men and

  498. women.

  499. He sought

  500. to warn

  501. about and

  502. expose those

  503. evil things

  504. that damage

  505. and destroy

  506. and mar

  507. our natures.

  508. believers.

  509. He sought

  510. to expose,

  511. he was

  512. courageous

  513. in doing

  514. it,

  515. religious

  516. sham and

  517. hypocrisy,

  518. the false

  519. religion that

  520. only leads

  521. people to

  522. destruction.

  523. He was

  524. always teaching

  525. that to be

  526. right with

  527. God,

  528. you had to

  529. live in the

  530. way God

  531. taught and

  532. God sought,

  533. to live

  534. righteously,

  535. to live

  536. morally.

  537. And right

  538. was always

  539. going to be

  540. right,

  541. even if

  542. nobody did

  543. it.

  544. And wrong

  545. was always

  546. going to be

  547. wrong,

  548. even if

  549. everybody

  550. did it.

  551. You know,

  552. there was a

  553. moral dimension

  554. to life

  555. that God

  556. had set in

  557. place.

  558. And of course,

  559. he constantly

  560. battled against

  561. Satan in

  562. all his

  563. guises.

  564. But what

  565. was perhaps

  566. most impressive

  567. about this

  568. man's life

  569. was the

  570. manner in

  571. which he

  572. conducted

  573. himself.

  574. How he

  575. responded

  576. to the

  577. abuse and

  578. the lies

  579. that were

  580. told about

  581. him.

  582. You know,

  583. when he was

  584. introduced

  585. and maligned

  586. and lied

  587. about,

  588. you know,

  589. even at the

  590. end of his

  591. life,

  592. when,

  593. you know,

  594. false charges

  595. were brought

  596. against him.

  597. There was

  598. that terrible,

  599. you know,

  600. that terrible

  601. miscarriage of

  602. justice when

  603. he was a

  604. victim of

  605. lies.

  606. And then

  607. he was,

  608. you know,

  609. he was

  610. demeaned

  611. and he

  612. was beaten

  613. and he

  614. was crucified.

  615. There was

  616. absolutely

  617. no self

  618. pity.

  619. There was

  620. no self

  621. defense.

  622. There was

  623. no pride.

  624. There was

  625. no arrogance.

  626. there just

  627. weren't any

  628. selfish desires

  629. in his

  630. life.

  631. No selfish

  632. ambition or

  633. improper

  634. desires.

  635. And we

  636. look in

  637. vain for

  638. a stain

  639. on his

  640. character.

  641. You know,

  642. he didn't

  643. injure anyone.

  644. He didn't

  645. take advantage

  646. of anyone.

  647. He didn't

  648. lie about

  649. people.

  650. He didn't

  651. mistreat

  652. people.

  653. He didn't

  654. commit a

  655. wrong action.

  656. In a way,

  657. it's all

  658. summed up

  659. in Mark's

  660. Gospel

  661. chapter 7

  662. where

  663. one of

  664. the

  665. folk

  666. testifies

  667. and says,

  668. you know,

  669. truly,

  670. this man,

  671. he has

  672. done all

  673. things well.

  674. what a

  675. testimony

  676. that was.

  677. So,

  678. that's what

  679. his life

  680. was like.

  681. But what

  682. was his

  683. life for?

  684. Well,

  685. two main

  686. things,

  687. really.

  688. He came,

  689. first of all,

  690. to show

  691. people what

  692. God was

  693. like.

  694. And secondly,

  695. to save

  696. people from

  697. the consequences

  698. of their

  699. sin.

  700. He came,

  701. first of all,

  702. to show

  703. people what

  704. God is

  705. like.

  706. You know,

  707. philosophers

  708. with their

  709. inquiring

  710. intellects,

  711. and little

  712. children with

  713. their innocent

  714. questions ask,

  715. what is God

  716. like?

  717. We all want

  718. to know what

  719. is God

  720. like.

  721. And Jesus

  722. gives a very

  723. simple answer.

  724. He says,

  725. whoever has

  726. seen me

  727. has seen

  728. the Father.

  729. That's what

  730. God is like.

  731. God is

  732. like Jesus.

  733. See,

  734. before his

  735. coming,

  736. people knew,

  737. those who

  738. believed,

  739. that God

  740. was the

  741. creator of

  742. the heavens

  743. and the

  744. earth.

  745. He was

  746. almighty.

  747. He was

  748. all-powerful.

  749. He was

  750. holy.

  751. You know,

  752. he was

  753. wise.

  754. He was

  755. merciful.

  756. But when

  757. Jesus came,

  758. they saw

  759. him bringing

  760. little children

  761. to sit

  762. around him.

  763. You know,

  764. they saw

  765. him mixing

  766. with people

  767. nobody else

  768. would mix

  769. with.

  770. Lepers,

  771. beggars,

  772. outcasts.

  773. They saw

  774. him,

  775. they saw

  776. him,

  777. you know,

  778. healing the

  779. sick,

  780. lifting up

  781. the sad,

  782. spending

  783. time with

  784. the fallen,

  785. the outcasts

  786. of society.

  787. Jesus,

  788. when he

  789. came,

  790. showed

  791. that God

  792. is loving

  793. and compassionate

  794. and personal.

  795. There's an old

  796. hymn written

  797. by a 19th

  798. century English

  799. clergyman,

  800. F.W.

  801. Faber,

  802. where he

  803. says,

  804. you know,

  805. there's a

  806. wideness

  807. in God's

  808. mercy,

  809. like the

  810. wideness

  811. of the

  812. sea.

  813. And he

  814. goes on

  815. to talk

  816. in the hymn,

  817. there is

  818. no place

  819. where

  820. earth's

  821. sorrows

  822. are more

  823. felt than

  824. up in

  825. heaven.

  826. There is

  827. no place

  828. where

  829. earth's

  830. feelings

  831. have such

  832. kindly

  833. judgment

  834. given.

  835. heaven.

  836. Jesus

  837. came to

  838. show us

  839. what God

  840. is like

  841. and that's

  842. what he's

  843. like.

  844. And he

  845. came to

  846. save people

  847. from the

  848. consequences

  849. of their

  850. sin.

  851. On the

  852. cross,

  853. Jesus

  854. said,

  855. Father,

  856. I have

  857. finished

  858. the work

  859. you gave

  860. me to

  861. do.

  862. And that

  863. work was

  864. a rescue

  865. work.

  866. Christianity

  867. is a

  868. rescue

  869. religion.

  870. You know,

  871. there's a

  872. great barrier

  873. between us

  874. and God

  875. that needs

  876. to be

  877. broken.

  878. There's a

  879. great gulf.

  880. There's a

  881. bridge that

  882. needs to

  883. be built

  884. to take

  885. us back

  886. to God.

  887. And Jesus

  888. came to

  889. do that.

  890. The Apostle

  891. Paul had

  892. that testimony,

  893. didn't he?

  894. He says,

  895. there's one

  896. mediator,

  897. one maker

  898. of peace

  899. between God

  900. and man,

  901. the man

  902. Christ Jesus.

  903. Peter,

  904. in his

  905. first letter,

  906. he says

  907. pretty much

  908. the same

  909. thing.

  910. He says,

  911. he died

  912. the just

  913. for the

  914. unjust

  915. that he

  916. might bring

  917. us to

  918. God.

  919. And then

  920. going to

  921. the cross

  922. and bearing

  923. our sins,

  924. Jesus broke

  925. that great

  926. barrier

  927. between God

  928. and people.

  929. He built

  930. a bridge

  931. that people

  932. could get

  933. back to

  934. God.

  935. And down

  936. through the

  937. centuries,

  938. this wonderful

  939. message

  940. has

  941. resonated

  942. in the

  943. Christian

  944. church.

  945. And as

  946. one hymn

  947. writer puts

  948. it,

  949. there was

  950. no other

  951. good enough

  952. to pay

  953. the price

  954. of sin.

  955. He only

  956. could unlock

  957. the gates

  958. of heaven

  959. and let

  960. us sin.

  961. So that's

  962. what his

  963. life was

  964. like.

  965. And that's

  966. what his

  967. life was

  968. for.

  969. But what

  970. has his

  971. life meant?

  972. Well,

  973. what does

  974. the coming

  975. of this

  976. unique

  977. man who

  978. was also

  979. God

  980. mean?

  981. Who lived

  982. this

  983. extraordinarily

  984. gracious

  985. and selfless

  986. life?

  987. Who claimed

  988. that he did

  989. this to show

  990. us God

  991. and to

  992. save us

  993. from the

  994. consequences

  995. of our

  996. sin?

  997. Well,

  998. really,

  999. it does

  1000. many things,

  1001. but two

  1002. things

  1003. primarily.

  1004. Firstly,

  1005. it transforms

  1006. our human

  1007. nature.

  1008. That's what

  1009. his life

  1010. has done,

  1011. if we

  1012. will allow

  1013. it.

  1014. And secondly,

  1015. it assures

  1016. us of

  1017. the future.

  1018. First of

  1019. all,

  1020. it transforms

  1021. our human

  1022. nature.

  1023. Apparently,

  1024. 90% of

  1025. Britain,

  1026. 90% of

  1027. people,

  1028. I beg your

  1029. pardon,

  1030. in Britain,

  1031. in the

  1032. UK,

  1033. are unhappy

  1034. with their

  1035. appearance.

  1036. They would

  1037. like to

  1038. change.

  1039. You know,

  1040. so anti-wrinkle

  1041. cream doesn't

  1042. work, by the

  1043. way, let me

  1044. tell you,

  1045. and plastic

  1046. surgery,

  1047. all of that,

  1048. you know,

  1049. to change

  1050. their appearance.

  1051. 45 million

  1052. people in

  1053. Britain this

  1054. weekend have

  1055. bought lottery

  1056. tickets in the

  1057. hope of winning

  1058. millions of

  1059. pounds,

  1060. things,

  1061. because that

  1062. will change

  1063. their lives,

  1064. they reckon.

  1065. No.

  1066. We don't

  1067. need our

  1068. appearance,

  1069. well, okay,

  1070. some of us

  1071. need our

  1072. appearances to

  1073. change,

  1074. but most of

  1075. you folk

  1076. don't.

  1077. we don't need

  1078. our appearances

  1079. to change.

  1080. You know,

  1081. we don't need

  1082. more stuff

  1083. that money

  1084. will buy.

  1085. We need

  1086. our hearts

  1087. to change,

  1088. and that's

  1089. what Jesus

  1090. Christ

  1091. has done.

  1092. Human nature,

  1093. our natures,

  1094. are not in

  1095. themselves good.

  1096. We are

  1097. utterly,

  1098. utterly selfish.

  1099. selfish.

  1100. We just

  1101. are,

  1102. you know,

  1103. and our

  1104. nature has

  1105. been warped

  1106. and wasted

  1107. by sin,

  1108. stained and

  1109. solid by

  1110. wrongdoing

  1111. against God,

  1112. and it

  1113. needs to

  1114. be remade.

  1115. And Jesus

  1116. comes and

  1117. does that.

  1118. He says to

  1119. the religious

  1120. leader,

  1121. Nicodemus,

  1122. Nicodemus,

  1123. look,

  1124. you need to

  1125. be born again.

  1126. You need to

  1127. be born from

  1128. above.

  1129. And that

  1130. has become,

  1131. well,

  1132. it's misused

  1133. a lot nowadays,

  1134. isn't it?

  1135. But actually,

  1136. because it's

  1137. the word of

  1138. God,

  1139. and Jesus

  1140. said it,

  1141. it's true.

  1142. And if I

  1143. could,

  1144. if you'll

  1145. excuse a

  1146. personal

  1147. reminisce,

  1148. when I was

  1149. a teenager

  1150. growing up

  1151. on Northern

  1152. Ireland,

  1153. I wasn't a

  1154. Christian.

  1155. I went to

  1156. church on

  1157. Sunday morning.

  1158. It was part

  1159. of the social

  1160. round.

  1161. It's what you

  1162. did.

  1163. But three

  1164. of my

  1165. grandparents

  1166. died within

  1167. about 18

  1168. months of

  1169. each other.

  1170. And three

  1171. different

  1172. ministers

  1173. conducted

  1174. their

  1175. funerals.

  1176. I remember

  1177. virtually nothing

  1178. about them.

  1179. Except,

  1180. when we

  1181. were in

  1182. the cemeteries,

  1183. and the

  1184. coffins were

  1185. being put

  1186. into the

  1187. ground,

  1188. each of the

  1189. ministers

  1190. quoted,

  1191. what I

  1192. now know

  1193. are words

  1194. of Jesus.

  1195. Jesus

  1196. said,

  1197. I am the

  1198. resurrection

  1199. and the

  1200. life.

  1201. Whosoever

  1202. believeth in

  1203. me,

  1204. though he

  1205. were dead,

  1206. yet shall

  1207. he live.

  1208. And whosoever

  1209. lives and

  1210. believes in

  1211. me will

  1212. never die.

  1213. Now,

  1214. if I thought

  1215. about it at

  1216. 12, I

  1217. thought that

  1218. was just

  1219. mumbo

  1220. jumbo.

  1221. How can

  1222. you be

  1223. dead,

  1224. but yet

  1225. live,

  1226. and yet

  1227. live and

  1228. never die?

  1229. And there

  1230. they are,

  1231. putting my

  1232. grandparents'

  1233. coffin in

  1234. the ground.

  1235. But of

  1236. course,

  1237. what Jesus

  1238. was talking

  1239. about was

  1240. spiritual life

  1241. and death.

  1242. All of us

  1243. have a

  1244. physical life.

  1245. You know,

  1246. we were all

  1247. born and

  1248. came into the

  1249. world and

  1250. grown up.

  1251. But there's

  1252. also a

  1253. spiritual life,

  1254. the life of

  1255. the soul.

  1256. And by

  1257. nature, we

  1258. are spiritually

  1259. dead.

  1260. You know,

  1261. we're cut

  1262. off from

  1263. God.

  1264. And when

  1265. we come in

  1266. faith and

  1267. repentance to

  1268. Jesus Christ,

  1269. to the cross,

  1270. and accept

  1271. that he took

  1272. the punishment

  1273. that we

  1274. deserve,

  1275. and when we

  1276. put our

  1277. trust in him

  1278. and accept

  1279. his forgiveness,

  1280. we're given

  1281. a new heart,

  1282. a new life.

  1283. it was

  1284. promised.

  1285. Even in the

  1286. Old Testament,

  1287. it was promised

  1288. by God that

  1289. that would

  1290. happen.

  1291. And of

  1292. course,

  1293. it transforms

  1294. people's lives.

  1295. And that

  1296. is what

  1297. it means.

  1298. It means

  1299. the life of

  1300. Jesus means

  1301. transformation

  1302. for those

  1303. who will

  1304. trust in

  1305. him.

  1306. And of

  1307. course,

  1308. he comes

  1309. to

  1310. reshape

  1311. our

  1312. future.

  1313. Because,

  1314. you know,

  1315. we need

  1316. guidance.

  1317. We need

  1318. leading in

  1319. life.

  1320. You know,

  1321. and it's

  1322. not just

  1323. young people.

  1324. We think

  1325. young people,

  1326. oh,

  1327. they need

  1328. career guidance,

  1329. and they need

  1330. this,

  1331. and they need

  1332. that.

  1333. All of us

  1334. need it.

  1335. Older folk

  1336. as well.

  1337. You know,

  1338. there's this

  1339. assumption

  1340. sometimes that

  1341. old people

  1342. are wise.

  1343. Not a bit

  1344. of it.

  1345. You know,

  1346. the Bible

  1347. talks about

  1348. an old

  1349. and foolish

  1350. king.

  1351. And so

  1352. many stories,

  1353. particularly in

  1354. the Old

  1355. Testament,

  1356. are of

  1357. people who

  1358. really lost

  1359. things as

  1360. they got

  1361. older.

  1362. So,

  1363. we need

  1364. God to

  1365. redirect our

  1366. paths,

  1367. to give us

  1368. destiny as

  1369. the children

  1370. of God.

  1371. Because

  1372. without that,

  1373. what is

  1374. life really?

  1375. William Shakespeare

  1376. has a great

  1377. quote in

  1378. Macbeth.

  1379. He says,

  1380. life is a

  1381. tale told

  1382. by an

  1383. idiot

  1384. full of

  1385. sound and

  1386. fury,

  1387. signifying

  1388. nothing.

  1389. Carl Jung,

  1390. one of the

  1391. great psychoanalysts

  1392. of the

  1393. 20th century,

  1394. he wrote

  1395. that really

  1396. the central

  1397. neuroses

  1398. of our

  1399. time is

  1400. emptiness.

  1401. You know,

  1402. what's life

  1403. all about?

  1404. What's life

  1405. for?

  1406. They say.

  1407. And of course,

  1408. the Rolling

  1409. Stones,

  1410. with their

  1411. most famous

  1412. song of

  1413. all,

  1414. you know,

  1415. can't get

  1416. no satisfaction

  1417. for getting

  1418. the bad

  1419. grammar

  1420. we know

  1421. what they

  1422. meant.

  1423. If you're

  1424. ever in

  1425. the north

  1426. of Scotland,

  1427. up in the

  1428. Highlands,

  1429. and going

  1430. into

  1431. Inverness,

  1432. if you're

  1433. going in

  1434. on the

  1435. road from

  1436. Nairn

  1437. into

  1438. Inverness

  1439. City,

  1440. there's this

  1441. huge billboard,

  1442. big sign,

  1443. massive letters,

  1444. and it says,

  1445. no,

  1446. your car

  1447. shouldn't be

  1448. making that

  1449. noise.

  1450. and it

  1451. gives the

  1452. address of

  1453. a garage

  1454. down below

  1455. where you

  1456. could go

  1457. and spend

  1458. money and

  1459. get your

  1460. car fixed.

  1461. How many

  1462. of us have

  1463. been in

  1464. that position?

  1465. You know

  1466. there's

  1467. something wrong.

  1468. Yeah,

  1469. your car

  1470. shouldn't

  1471. really be

  1472. making that

  1473. noise.

  1474. You know

  1475. something's

  1476. wrong.

  1477. You're not

  1478. quite sure

  1479. because you're

  1480. not a

  1481. mechanic.

  1482. You don't

  1483. know what

  1484. it is,

  1485. but you

  1486. know something's

  1487. not right.

  1488. Life's like

  1489. that.

  1490. Life's like

  1491. that.

  1492. We know,

  1493. without God

  1494. and without

  1495. Jesus,

  1496. we know

  1497. that

  1498. something

  1499. is not

  1500. right.

  1501. And we

  1502. need Jesus

  1503. to transform

  1504. our life

  1505. and help

  1506. move the

  1507. center of

  1508. gravity

  1509. from self

  1510. to Jesus

  1511. so that

  1512. we serve

  1513. him.

  1514. We serve

  1515. other people.

  1516. We work

  1517. for the

  1518. extension of

  1519. his kingdom.

  1520. And of

  1521. course,

  1522. we have

  1523. hope.

  1524. Don't we?

  1525. We have

  1526. hope of

  1527. eternal life

  1528. with Jesus

  1529. in heaven.

  1530. And the

  1531. other thing,

  1532. on a

  1533. practical

  1534. level,

  1535. you know,

  1536. it's so

  1537. difficult to

  1538. explain to

  1539. people sometimes,

  1540. but Jesus

  1541. takes us to

  1542. where the

  1543. good things

  1544. are.

  1545. You know

  1546. that story

  1547. we read

  1548. from Luke

  1549. where Jesus

  1550. goes to

  1551. Peter and

  1552. they've been

  1553. fishing all

  1554. day and

  1555. they haven't

  1556. caught anything

  1557. and here

  1558. comes this

  1559. carpenter

  1560. and tells

  1561. them to put

  1562. out into

  1563. the deep,

  1564. you know,

  1565. but they

  1566. go and

  1567. do it

  1568. and what

  1569. do they

  1570. discover?

  1571. That he

  1572. has taken

  1573. them to

  1574. where the

  1575. good things

  1576. are.

  1577. And he

  1578. does that

  1579. again and

  1580. again.

  1581. I bet,

  1582. no, I don't

  1583. bet, I'm not a

  1584. betting man,

  1585. but I guarantee

  1586. if I asked

  1587. the Christians

  1588. who, people

  1589. here this

  1590. morning, who've

  1591. been Christians

  1592. for maybe 15

  1593. or 20 years,

  1594. to tell you a

  1595. story when

  1596. Jesus in

  1597. their lives

  1598. led them

  1599. through a

  1600. situation and

  1601. they couldn't

  1602. understand, why

  1603. am I going

  1604. through this?

  1605. Why is God

  1606. allowing this

  1607. to happen?

  1608. But he

  1609. brought them

  1610. to where the

  1611. good things

  1612. are.

  1613. I could

  1614. guarantee

  1615. almost everyone

  1616. would be able

  1617. to do that.

  1618. See this

  1619. pulpit?

  1620. It's a

  1621. replica,

  1622. exact replica,

  1623. of the pulpit

  1624. in Milan

  1625. Cathedral.

  1626. And if you

  1627. were to go to

  1628. Milan Cathedral

  1629. today and

  1630. approaching that

  1631. huge, huge,

  1632. apparently it's

  1633. one of the

  1634. greatest cathedrals

  1635. in Europe,

  1636. there's three

  1637. great doors

  1638. and there are

  1639. arches over

  1640. each door with

  1641. carvings on

  1642. them.

  1643. And over the

  1644. door on the

  1645. left, it

  1646. says, all

  1647. that pleases

  1648. is but for

  1649. a moment.

  1650. And over the

  1651. door on the

  1652. right, it

  1653. says, all

  1654. that troubles

  1655. is but for

  1656. a moment.

  1657. But over the

  1658. big central

  1659. arch, it

  1660. said, that

  1661. only is

  1662. important,

  1663. which is

  1664. eternal.

  1665. Can I ask

  1666. this morning,

  1667. are you

  1668. thinking about

  1669. eternal

  1670. things?

  1671. do you

  1672. think much

  1673. about the

  1674. living God

  1675. who made

  1676. you?

  1677. What are

  1678. you making

  1679. of Jesus

  1680. to use

  1681. C.S.

  1682. Lewis'

  1683. question?

  1684. But of

  1685. course,

  1686. really,

  1687. the only

  1688. question that

  1689. really,

  1690. truly matters

  1691. is the one

  1692. that Jesus

  1693. asked Peter

  1694. and he

  1695. asks each

  1696. of us,

  1697. who do

  1698. you say

  1699. that I

  1700. am?

  1701. Let's

  1702. pray.

  1703. Our

  1704. loving

  1705. Heavenly

  1706. Father,

  1707. we thank

  1708. you that

  1709. your great

  1710. plan of

  1711. salvation

  1712. was to

  1713. bring Jesus

  1714. as a baby

  1715. in a manger

  1716. to live

  1717. and grow

  1718. and then

  1719. die on a

  1720. cross and

  1721. be resurrected

  1722. that we

  1723. sinful

  1724. sons of

  1725. men

  1726. might

  1727. know

  1728. new life,

  1729. know

  1730. eternal

  1731. life

  1732. in our

  1733. souls.

  1734. And so

  1735. we thank

  1736. you again

  1737. for Jesus,

  1738. the wonderful

  1739. example he

  1740. showed us

  1741. in his life

  1742. of how to

  1743. live.

  1744. And in

  1745. his death,

  1746. he was a

  1747. sacrifice

  1748. for our

  1749. sins.

  1750. in his

  1751. resurrection,

  1752. a conqueror,

  1753. in his

  1754. ascension,

  1755. a king,

  1756. and in his

  1757. intercession for

  1758. us day by

  1759. day, a

  1760. great high

  1761. priest.

  1762. Lord, we

  1763. thank you for

  1764. him and

  1765. we pray that

  1766. you would

  1767. give us

  1768. each one the

  1769. grace this

  1770. morning to

  1771. answer that

  1772. Jesus is not

  1773. just a

  1774. saviour,

  1775. but he is

  1776. my saviour.

  1777. In his

  1778. name we pray

  1779. this.

  1780. Amen.
