  1. For a moment, let's bow our heads in prayer.

  2. Father, we ask that you would gently but powerfully pour out the Holy Spirit upon us this morning.

  3. Father, once again, we ask that as you make us more aware of who Jesus is and what he did for us,

  4. that, Father, gripped by that, more and more gripped by that,

  5. you would help us to understand who we are, who each of us are,

  6. and how it is that you desire to shape us and form us and prepare us, Father, for an eternity in the new heaven and the new earth.

  7. And, Father, that is a work that only your Holy Spirit can do.

  8. And so we ask that you would be the one who would do that wonderful work in our hearts and our minds this morning.

  9. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  10. Please be seated.

  11. So, you know, we've all had situations, and maybe we've been guilty of ourselves,

  12. where, you know, we say to somebody, you know, go ahead and tell me what you really think.

  13. Like, I won't be upset. Like, I won't be mad. I won't hold it against you.

  14. And sometimes when people say that to us, they really mean it.

  15. They will accept it. They will hear it.

  16. They won't hold it against us.

  17. But as we all know, sometimes that's not true.

  18. We mistakenly or erroneously go ahead and tell them what we actually think about something or what we've done,

  19. and they do hold against us.

  20. A hundred million years ago, when I was...

  21. In the old Diocese of Ottawa that I was part of, there was a discernment process,

  22. a big process that you went through to discern whether or not you were called to be an Anglican minister,

  23. an Anglican presbyter.

  24. And sort of the culmination of that discernment on one level was going away for these two days, three days.

  25. You'd go off to... We went to a motel, and there was, you know, people from a variety of all over the province.

  26. And basically, from the time you arrived until lunchtime on Saturday, and you had to arrive on Thursday,

  27. you were assessed by all of these different people.

  28. But you also had specific times of assessment.

  29. And in my specific time of assessment, the guy was... He was an Anglican minister, and he just was... It was just odd.

  30. He kept asking me things like,

  31. What do you feel good about?

  32. I don't... Like, I don't know. How do you answer a question like that?

  33. I don't know. Like, I feel good that it's sunny outside?

  34. I don't know. I like...

  35. You know, what do you feel bad about?

  36. Like, what makes you happy? What makes you...

  37. He's asking me all these vague questions.

  38. And then he... And I'm sort of giving him some type of lame answer, probably.

  39. Because, yeah, I mean, the fact of the matter is,

  40. everybody at it, including me, are unbelievably tense, right?

  41. You're under whatever that is, like 48 hours, not counting sleep,

  42. of intensive scrutiny that helps to determine your future.

  43. So, yeah, there's no stress here amongst me or any of the other people.

  44. It was really dumb questions.

  45. Anyway, finally, after about 10 minutes, he said to me,

  46. Well, tell me, what is it you really don't like about the Anglican Church?

  47. Well, I'm not going to answer that question.

  48. And then he presses me and presses me and presses me.

  49. And he kept saying, Listen, I'm not going to hold it against you.

  50. I'm just curious. Like, you know, I'm just curious.

  51. So, kid you not, at that time at a university that I was still connected with,

  52. which will go nameless in case you can trace back who I'm referring to,

  53. there was an Anglican minister who was a chaplain.

  54. And I'd heard him speak several times.

  55. And that Anglican minister didn't believe that Jesus had risen from the dead,

  56. didn't believe in the incarnation or the virgin birth,

  57. didn't believe most things in the New Testament actually happened.

  58. Like, you just name any core doctrine.

  59. He didn't even hide that he didn't believe it.

  60. He boasted and tried to encourage everybody else to stop believing in these things.

  61. So, I just said, You know, there's this Anglican minister there,

  62. and he says all of these things.

  63. And as far as I'm concerned, if he believes those things,

  64. he shouldn't be an Anglican minister.

  65. Well, that's when I discovered he was going to hold it against me,

  66. and he was going to make a big deal of it.

  67. And rather than assessing me for the next 30 minutes,

  68. he gave me a 30-minute lecture about how maybe I was just not well-read enough.

  69. Maybe this other minister is more spiritually and intellectually and academically advanced,

  70. and on and on and on.

  71. And then in my third assessment, it turned out that I had to answer the question.

  72. I was narrow-minded and prejudiced because there were some concerns about it.

  73. Now, just as an aside, how on earth did I pass that, you're wondering?

  74. In those days, I had hair down to my belt and a beard,

  75. and I think that's the only reason I passed.

  76. Because they wanted younger people,

  77. and I just didn't look like somebody would hold those views.

  78. So, I think they gave me a pass,

  79. and they probably have been regretting it ever since,

  80. but that's a separate story.

  81. But the problem is, as we all know,

  82. that sometimes, you know, people say that,

  83. they say they're not going to hold it against you,

  84. they say certain things, but they just don't mean it.

  85. They just don't mean what we say.

  86. And this very, very, very sad text that we're looking at today,

  87. and for some of these sermons I've been saying,

  88. imagine that they were taking the Gospel of Mark,

  89. and they were turning it into like a Netflix series,

  90. or something like that,

  91. or an Amazon Prime series,

  92. or Crave, or whatever, HBO.

  93. And, you know, every week there was a bit of an episode.

  94. And this would be an episode that is just frankly sad.

  95. It ends in sorrow.

  96. It ends in almost inconsolable, heartbreaking sorrow.

  97. And the question arises from the text,

  98. it's like, why is it that there would be such a sad story?

  99. Like, why would this be in the Bible?

  100. Why would this be in the Gospel?

  101. A story which is so sad,

  102. a story about failure,

  103. a story about guilt,

  104. a story about doing wrong.

  105. But it really enters into a very, very profound topic

  106. in terms of whether or not,

  107. well,

  108. the older you are,

  109. the more that you understand,

  110. I think wise people understand,

  111. that what we need is not,

  112. we need justice always, of course.

  113. I'm not denying that we need justice.

  114. But more than justice,

  115. we need forgiveness.

  116. And is Jesus serious

  117. when he talks about forgiveness?

  118. Like, is the Bible serious about it?

  119. Does it have some wise things to say

  120. about one of the deepest needs

  121. that human beings have,

  122. which is a need for forgiveness?

  123. So let's look.

  124. If you have your Bibles,

  125. it's Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14:66–72

  126. verses 66 to 72.

  127. And just in terms of,

  128. you know,

  129. if this was Netflix or Amazon Prime

  130. or whatever,

  131. there'd be a little recap at the beginning.

  132. And rather than just pushing

  133. the skip recap button,

  134. just sort of just before that,

  135. there's been lots of very sad things.

  136. We're sort of almost halfway through

  137. the 24 hours that changed the world.

  138. It's all the first day of the Passover

  139. because Jewish people at that time,

  140. still actually,

  141. the day begins at sunset

  142. and ends the next sunset.

  143. That's how the day works.

  144. So there's 24 hours that changed the world.

  145. Jesus has predicted to his disciples

  146. and his other friends

  147. he's going to be betrayed.

  148. Judas has, in fact, betrayed him.

  149. Jesus has been just throwing himself

  150. on the ground in sorrow,

  151. calling out to the Father

  152. to answer a prayer with yes,

  153. and the Father says no.

  154. And Jesus is seized,

  155. and Judas,

  156. Jesus has just been through

  157. a kangaroo court,

  158. a show trial,

  159. and at the end of it,

  160. like on,

  161. given that his life depends

  162. upon how he answers it,

  163. he goes in,

  164. he gives the honest answer

  165. that he is the Messiah,

  166. he is God,

  167. the Son of God,

  168. and his enemies have got

  169. what they need

  170. to put him to death.

  171. And so while that's going on,

  172. this story happens.

  173. Okay?

  174. And here's how it begins,

  175. verse 66.

  176. And as Peter was below

  177. in the courtyard,

  178. one of the servant girls

  179. of the high priest came

  180. and seeing Peter warming himself,

  181. she looked at him and said,

  182. you also were with the Nazarene,

  183. Jesus.

  184. But he denied it,

  185. saying,

  186. I neither know nor understand

  187. what you mean.

  188. And he went out,

  189. Peter went out into the gateway

  190. and the rooster crowed.

  191. Now just a couple of things

  192. about this.

  193. First of all,

  194. it's very interesting.

  195. We talked about this last week

  196. to show that the whole,

  197. that his enemies attacking Jesus

  198. is the examination of Jesus

  199. doesn't take place

  200. in any official place

  201. like where the Sanhedrin meets

  202. or the official court,

  203. but in a high priest's house

  204. where there's guards

  205. in the courtyard.

  206. And here we see that

  207. while Peter is speaking below,

  208. Jesus, we now know,

  209. is on the second floor.

  210. That's where his enemies

  211. are going after him

  212. on the second floor

  213. and Peter is outside below him.

  214. And he has a,

  215. Jesus is put down

  216. by a servant girl.

  217. You know, here it is.

  218. Jesus, as we looked at last week,

  219. you can go back

  220. and read it later,

  221. he makes,

  222. in the presence of his enemies

  223. on trial for his life,

  224. he makes this momentous declaration

  225. that he, in fact,

  226. is the Messiah,

  227. that he is, in fact,

  228. God, the Son of God.

  229. He actually confesses to this

  230. in the presence of his enemies

  231. in a capital trial

  232. where he knows

  233. they want to have him

  234. put to death.

  235. And while he's making

  236. these momentous claims,

  237. and if you're here

  238. as a seeker

  239. or you're not quite sure

  240. what you think of,

  241. that's,

  242. we'll talk about that,

  243. not necessarily today,

  244. but why that's a good thing

  245. to believe,

  246. but later on,

  247. we will talk about

  248. why those,

  249. why it is,

  250. it's reasonable

  251. to believe that,

  252. and we'll say something

  253. in a moment,

  254. but while this is going on,

  255. the woman has just

  256. a casual put down

  257. of Jesus,

  258. the Nazarene Jesus.

  259. Some of you have heard

  260. me explain it before.

  261. If I was to bring

  262. somebody up front

  263. and I was to introduce

  264. the person as,

  265. you know,

  266. this is,

  267. this is an Oxford guy,

  268. Oxford gal,

  269. or Cambridge,

  270. MIT,

  271. you know,

  272. it's,

  273. that's who this person is,

  274. or if I was to say this,

  275. you know,

  276. John here is from

  277. Apple headquarters,

  278. you'd all go,

  279. oh,

  280. this person's a somebody,

  281. you know,

  282. this person here

  283. has just come,

  284. he's,

  285. he or she is with

  286. the Prime Minister's office,

  287. the Chief of Staff,

  288. they're here to address you,

  289. I'm trying to impress you

  290. with their credentials,

  291. but Nazarene is

  292. nowheresville,

  293. it would be as if

  294. and today,

  295. if I was to invite

  296. Steve up to speak

  297. and said,

  298. this is Steve

  299. from Brudenell,

  300. and Brudenell,

  301. as I've said to you before,

  302. if you look in a big

  303. empty spot

  304. of eastern Ontario

  305. and you're trying to go

  306. from one empty spot

  307. to another empty spot,

  308. you pass through Brudenell,

  309. it's nowhereville,

  310. and,

  311. and so this is just

  312. a casual put down

  313. of Jesus,

  314. the Nazarene,

  315. the guy from nowhere,

  316. the guy from

  317. unimportantville,

  318. like we're no,

  319. like we're only

  320. hicks live

  321. and nothing is ever

  322. of great value,

  323. but then Peter

  324. gives this really

  325. weird answer,

  326. look,

  327. look at it again,

  328. and by the way,

  329. verse 68 says,

  330. but he denied it,

  331. saying,

  332. I neither know

  333. nor understand

  334. what you mean,

  335. although then he goes

  336. out farther

  337. from the light,

  338. like farther off

  339. into the darkness,

  340. but here's the thing,

  341. it's weird,

  342. in the original language,

  343. he says,

  344. there are two separate

  345. words for knowledge,

  346. the first knowledge,

  347. type of knowledge,

  348. is theoretical

  349. or abstract knowledge,

  350. it's E equals MC squared

  351. type of knowledge,

  352. okay,

  353. it's like going

  354. to university

  355. and taking a,

  356. you know,

  357. a theory of numbers,

  358. or,

  359. you know,

  360. the theory,

  361. the high level,

  362. and the other one

  363. is practical knowledge,

  364. and this is just

  365. like a weird answer,

  366. like she just says,

  367. hey,

  368. you're with the

  369. Nazarene Jesus,

  370. and he said,

  371. I neither have

  372. the theoretical knowledge

  373. or the practical knowledge

  374. to understand

  375. what that means,

  376. like what?

  377. Like privately,

  378. she probably said to later,

  379. there's this jerk

  380. over there,

  381. like he gave me

  382. this really stupid answer,

  383. and I bet that Peter

  384. at the time

  385. didn't think

  386. he denied Jesus,

  387. I thought,

  388. I think he thought

  389. he was being clever,

  390. what exactly do you mean

  391. by Jesus,

  392. it's a common name,

  393. like I,

  394. you know,

  395. what about Nazarene,

  396. what does from mean,

  397. like,

  398. I don't know,

  399. like it's just,

  400. here,

  401. if you could put up

  402. the first point,

  403. just a little

  404. off the side point,

  405. but important,

  406. beware of using cleverness

  407. to try and cover up

  408. your unfaithfulness,

  409. beware of using cleverness

  410. to try to cover up

  411. your unfaithfulness,

  412. actually,

  413. the book of common prayer

  414. has a really,

  415. if you use morning

  416. and evening prayer,

  417. it's called

  418. dissembling and cloaking

  419. your sin,

  420. it's a beautiful phrase,

  421. dissembling means

  422. you try to confuse people

  423. with what you've actually said

  424. or you try to hide it

  425. and that's what Peter's

  426. trying to do

  427. and I bet you actually

  428. that at the time,

  429. Peter probably thought

  430. that he,

  431. I didn't deny her,

  432. he sort of got out of it

  433. somehow with,

  434. I mean,

  435. the servant girl

  436. probably thought

  437. he was a jerk,

  438. he probably thought

  439. he hadn't denied it

  440. because technically,

  441. technically,

  442. it might not sound like

  443. to him that it's a denial,

  444. but it was,

  445. it was a denial.

  446. In fact,

  447. actually,

  448. you'll notice

  449. that the text nails it,

  450. but he denied it

  451. saying,

  452. I neither know,

  453. so that the text,

  454. just one of the things

  455. you need to know

  456. about the text here,

  457. which is really interesting

  458. at this point,

  459. so first of all,

  460. how would anybody know

  461. about this encounter

  462. unless Peter told them

  463. about it,

  464. unless afterwards

  465. Peter told them

  466. what had happened

  467. and that Peter

  468. actually shared

  469. with people

  470. that I thought

  471. I was being clever,

  472. but I was really

  473. just being a jerk

  474. and I,

  475. you know,

  476. for that brief moment,

  477. I thought I'd avoided it,

  478. but in hindsight,

  479. what it was

  480. is actually,

  481. it was a denial.

  482. It's not just,

  483. and one of the,

  484. and one of the things

  485. in particular

  486. is that most modern scholars

  487. and following

  488. the testimony

  489. of the early church

  490. believe that Peter,

  491. this is ultimately

  492. Peter's gospel,

  493. even though it has

  494. Mark's name on it.

  495. In other words,

  496. that Mark wrote down

  497. how Peter

  498. remembered Jesus

  499. and what Peter saw

  500. and did with Jesus

  501. and Mark wrote it down.

  502. And,

  503. and so it's very interesting

  504. that not only

  505. later on

  506. for posterity

  507. does Peter label it

  508. a denial,

  509. but as we'll see

  510. in a moment,

  511. by the end of the story,

  512. Peter has had

  513. a change of heart,

  514. a deep sorrow

  515. that he now understands

  516. that this first thing

  517. that he did

  518. wasn't clever,

  519. but was in fact

  520. a denial.

  521. We'll see that.

  522. Look at verse,

  523. look at verse 69.

  524. And the servant girl

  525. saw Peter

  526. and he goes off

  527. into the darkness.

  528. She saw Peter

  529. and began again

  530. to say to the bystanders,

  531. this man is,

  532. is one of them.

  533. But again,

  534. Peter denied it.

  535. And,

  536. and actually

  537. just sort of pause here.

  538. You can't know this

  539. unless you know

  540. the original language,

  541. but in the original language,

  542. what it really is saying

  543. is Peter

  544. not just denied,

  545. he didn't just say no,

  546. he went on and on

  547. and on and on

  548. and on about it.

  549. Right?

  550. You know how sometimes,

  551. so if one thing

  552. what we try to do

  553. sometimes to cover up

  554. when we've been unfaithful,

  555. we,

  556. we think we're being clever

  557. with fine distinctions

  558. or something like that.

  559. The other way that we do,

  560. we try to get out of

  561. taking responsibility

  562. for a certain thing

  563. or denying something

  564. is we,

  565. we talk a lot about it.

  566. Right?

  567. You know,

  568. I'm not picking sides

  569. in part,

  570. but one of the things

  571. politicians do

  572. when somebody tries

  573. to,

  574. to pin them

  575. on whether they've done

  576. something,

  577. they give a long

  578. convoluted answer,

  579. hoping that by the end

  580. of the answer,

  581. which isn't an answer,

  582. you've forgotten

  583. what you've asked.

  584. Right?

  585. And,

  586. and so that's what Peter does.

  587. He goes on and on

  588. and on and on about it.

  589. But it actually ends up

  590. backfiring on him.

  591. Look again at verse 70.

  592. But again,

  593. he denied it.

  594. And after a little while,

  595. the bystanders again said

  596. to Peter,

  597. certainly you're one of them,

  598. for you are a Galilean.

  599. In other words,

  600. the more he talked,

  601. his Galilean accent

  602. came out.

  603. His Galilean

  604. isms

  605. came out.

  606. But he,

  607. Peter,

  608. began to invoke

  609. a curse

  610. on himself

  611. and to swear,

  612. I do not know

  613. this man

  614. of whom you speak.

  615. Now,

  616. just sort of

  617. pause here for a second.

  618. Some of you,

  619. especially if you're looking

  620. in your own Bibles,

  621. you might see that

  622. it's worded a little bit

  623. differently.

  624. Some of the,

  625. the versions of the Bible

  626. says,

  627. he began to invoke

  628. a curse on them

  629. and,

  630. and to swear.

  631. So,

  632. what's happening there,

  633. it's,

  634. one of the things

  635. about this,

  636. the language of the time,

  637. in the original language,

  638. you can't actually tell.

  639. The way the words are,

  640. it could mean either one.

  641. It could either mean

  642. that he

  643. curses himself

  644. or curses another person.

  645. And it might even just be

  646. that he did both,

  647. by the way.

  648. And I'll explain

  649. what he means

  650. when I,

  651. what this is.

  652. So,

  653. here's what it is.

  654. And we all,

  655. maybe none of us do this.

  656. Maybe we know people

  657. who talk this way,

  658. but it's definitely

  659. a thing of books

  660. and movies.

  661. You know,

  662. the first thing is,

  663. he said,

  664. may God,

  665. in a sense,

  666. okay,

  667. just,

  668. may God strike me dead.

  669. I swear to you

  670. on my mother's grave,

  671. I'm telling you the truth.

  672. That's invoking a curse

  673. on himself

  674. and taking an oath

  675. that he's telling the truth.

  676. Right?

  677. The,

  678. the other way is,

  679. you know,

  680. to be mad at the other person

  681. and,

  682. and just pardon my language

  683. to say in a sense

  684. to somebody who's challenging,

  685. you know,

  686. God damn you.

  687. I swear,

  688. I swear on my children's lives

  689. when I'm telling you the truth.

  690. And you can see that,

  691. in a sense,

  692. it might even be

  693. that he did both

  694. and it's just interesting

  695. because,

  696. you know,

  697. nowadays when we,

  698. you know,

  699. we can type on the computer

  700. and you just type

  701. and type

  702. and type

  703. and type

  704. and it just goes on forever.

  705. But back then,

  706. things to write on

  707. were very precious

  708. and expensive

  709. and you just had

  710. a certain number of words

  711. that you could do

  712. and that just one of the things

  713. that in the original language

  714. it could be

  715. that he did both.

  716. But it's more likely,

  717. but people,

  718. translators,

  719. because of English,

  720. you can't do it.

  721. Translators have to figure out

  722. which one's most likely

  723. and it's probably more likely

  724. that he's not trying

  725. to intimidate people

  726. because he's,

  727. he's frightened

  728. and so he does the first thing,

  729. you know,

  730. like,

  731. you know,

  732. God,

  733. strike me dead.

  734. You know,

  735. may God curse me forever.

  736. Strike me dead.

  737. I swear on my mother's grave

  738. or I swear by the temple

  739. that I am telling you the truth.

  740. I am telling you the truth.

  741. I do not know this man

  742. of whom you speak.

  743. If you could put up

  744. just the second point.

  745. Some of you might be familiar

  746. with the Bible

  747. and in Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  748. Jesus warns us

  749. against taking oaths

  750. and that's because

  751. it is far too common

  752. to invoke a curse

  753. or make an oath

  754. to try and cover up wrongdoing.

  755. Right?

  756. Like,

  757. if you see in a movie

  758. somebody saying like that,

  759. like,

  760. I swear on my mother's grave

  761. or whatever,

  762. they're lying usually,

  763. right?

  764. When they say something like that,

  765. it usually means they're lying

  766. and they're trying

  767. to get out of it

  768. and it's not,

  769. not that every time

  770. it happens,

  771. but often that's what happens.

  772. You try to up everything,

  773. you know,

  774. to cover up the fact

  775. that what you're doing

  776. is shady at the best,

  777. but often just downright despicable.

  778. And it's a human problem

  779. and Jesus nails it.

  780. And actually,

  781. you know,

  782. by the way,

  783. one of the arguments

  784. for why this

  785. is so trustworthy,

  786. like,

  787. like,

  788. occasionally you'll come

  789. across skeptics

  790. who'll say,

  791. you know,

  792. that most of these things

  793. in the New Testament,

  794. like,

  795. in these ancient eyewitness

  796. biographies

  797. aren't ancient eyewitness

  798. biographies.

  799. They were written much later

  800. and they were sort of

  801. written in secret

  802. and they're really trying

  803. to serve the power

  804. of the church

  805. and the church's agenda

  806. or some community's agenda.

  807. And one of the arguments

  808. as to why that isn't true

  809. is the fact that Peter

  810. records

  811. his

  812. despicableness.

  813. Like,

  814. how does this serve

  815. propping up the power

  816. structures of the church

  817. if in,

  818. you know,

  819. James and John

  820. and Peter

  821. all are shown

  822. to be failures

  823. and doubters

  824. and deniers

  825. and fleers

  826. and cowards

  827. and liars?

  828. Like,

  829. that's why the text

  830. has the,

  831. has the feel

  832. and the shape

  833. of integrity.

  834. Because this isn't

  835. something you'd make up

  836. if you're trying to make

  837. the Peter party

  838. or the,

  839. the more and more strong

  840. and why everybody

  841. should listen to him

  842. by having Peter

  843. make sure that it's

  844. written down

  845. just how,

  846. how much of a sinner

  847. he was and is.

  848. Well,

  849. remember I said

  850. that it's very

  851. interesting that

  852. Peter has to be

  853. the source of this

  854. and the first denial

  855. he might have at the time

  856. thought it wasn't

  857. really a denial

  858. but now when we're

  859. reading about it

  860. it's nailed

  861. that it's a denial.

  862. Look how

  863. we,

  864. we see that

  865. even in that time

  866. that Peter understood

  867. that what that first

  868. instant was

  869. was actually a denial.

  870. Look at verse 72.

  871. And immediately

  872. the rooster

  873. crowed a second time

  874. and Peter remembered

  875. how Jesus had said

  876. to him

  877. before the rooster

  878. crows twice

  879. you will deny me

  880. three times

  881. and Peter

  882. broke down

  883. and wept.

  884. And in the original

  885. language that broke down

  886. that means broke down

  887. like that means

  888. that means

  889. convulsive sobbing.

  890. that means

  891. hardly able to stand

  892. sorrow.

  893. Barely able to stand

  894. heart-wrenching

  895. sobs

  896. of sorrow.

  897. And it's really interesting

  898. I, you know

  899. it's really interesting

  900. that

  901. it's a rooster

  902. it's a rooster

  903. that serves

  904. as the sign

  905. because what is it

  906. about roosters?

  907. Roosters are an image

  908. of strutting

  909. pride.

  910. And so

  911. an image

  912. of strutting

  913. pride

  914. is what brings

  915. Peter

  916. to understand

  917. that he

  918. has nothing

  919. to be proud about

  920. and break him down

  921. in sobs.

  922. So why such a sad

  923. story in the Bible

  924. in the gospel?

  925. It's here I think

  926. because

  927. it's going to say

  928. something to us

  929. very profound

  930. and important

  931. about forgiveness

  932. about patience

  933. about prayer

  934. and about personal

  935. change.

  936. Actually

  937. it's interesting

  938. and if

  939. by the way

  940. one of the people

  941. that I talked to

  942. yesterday

  943. in the coffee shop

  944. or here

  945. shout out to you

  946. you guys do

  947. a great job

  948. it's a wonderful

  949. coffee shop

  950. to go to

  951. so a shout out

  952. to you

  953. if you're watching

  954. one of the

  955. baristas

  956. asked me

  957. as I'm getting

  958. my refill

  959. what I was going

  960. to like

  961. first of all

  962. she said

  963. anyway

  964. she asked me

  965. what I was going

  966. to talk about

  967. tomorrow

  968. which is now

  969. today

  970. and

  971. she said

  972. asked me

  973. if I was ready

  974. yet

  975. and I said

  976. no

  977. that's what

  978. I'm working

  979. on right now

  980. and she said

  981. what are you

  982. going to talk

  983. about

  984. and I said

  985. um

  986. I didn't have

  987. the deer in the

  988. headlight moment

  989. but I said

  990. um

  991. I'm going to

  992. talk about

  993. why forgiving

  994. yourself

  995. doesn't work

  996. and in fact

  997. only makes

  998. things worse

  999. and she goes

  1000. whoa

  1001. you talk about

  1002. things like that

  1003. like that

  1004. sounds deep

  1005. and then we

  1006. had this like

  1007. there's nobody

  1008. else

  1009. and then like

  1010. the four of

  1011. them

  1012. I have this

  1013. brief talk

  1014. a little bit

  1015. about why

  1016. it is

  1017. that self

  1018. forgiveness

  1019. doesn't work

  1020. so here

  1021. just

  1022. here's the

  1023. thing

  1024. we could all

  1025. think of

  1026. stories

  1027. in our own

  1028. lives

  1029. where we feel

  1030. bound by

  1031. guilt

  1032. where we've

  1033. done things

  1034. which are

  1035. terribly wrong

  1036. maybe at the

  1037. time we didn't

  1038. think they were

  1039. very wrong

  1040. but afterwards

  1041. we realized

  1042. just how wrong

  1043. they were

  1044. and

  1045. the feeling

  1046. of guilt

  1047. can be

  1048. very very

  1049. powerful

  1050. it can bind

  1051. us

  1052. and sometimes

  1053. even after a

  1054. person has

  1055. forgiven us

  1056. for the wrong

  1057. that they've

  1058. done

  1059. we've done

  1060. to them

  1061. we still feel

  1062. bound and

  1063. trapped by

  1064. that guilt

  1065. but often

  1066. in life

  1067. people don't

  1068. forgive us

  1069. and sometimes

  1070. as you know

  1071. even those

  1072. who don't

  1073. forgive us

  1074. they move

  1075. away or

  1076. they die

  1077. and they

  1078. died not

  1079. forgiving us

  1080. at all

  1081. and so

  1082. sometimes we

  1083. can be even

  1084. doubly bound

  1085. by it

  1086. we don't really

  1087. know where

  1088. to go

  1089. with our

  1090. guilt

  1091. and so

  1092. the culture

  1093. increasingly

  1094. what Canadian

  1095. culture

  1096. North American

  1097. culture

  1098. increasingly

  1099. recommends

  1100. you see it

  1101. in books

  1102. you see it

  1103. in movies

  1104. is that we

  1105. need to learn

  1106. to forgive

  1107. ourselves

  1108. and on one

  1109. hand it's a

  1110. very very

  1111. it's responding

  1112. to this

  1113. existential need

  1114. that not all

  1115. of us feel

  1116. all of the

  1117. time

  1118. everybody will

  1119. feel at some

  1120. point in time

  1121. in their life

  1122. and many

  1123. of us

  1124. can feel

  1125. it for

  1126. many years

  1127. and many

  1128. seasons of

  1129. our lives

  1130. this sense

  1131. of guilt

  1132. and with it

  1133. this sense

  1134. of shame

  1135. and a sense

  1136. of type

  1137. of powerlessness

  1138. in the face

  1139. of it

  1140. and it

  1141. sort of

  1142. beats us

  1143. up

  1144. it

  1145. takes the

  1146. oomph out

  1147. of our

  1148. sails

  1149. it makes

  1150. it hard

  1151. for us

  1152. to look

  1153. another

  1154. person

  1155. in the

  1156. eye

  1157. it makes

  1158. it hard

  1159. for us

  1160. to enter

  1161. into a

  1162. relationship

  1163. or a

  1164. friendship

  1165. it can

  1166. make it

  1167. hard for

  1168. us to

  1169. see other

  1170. people

  1171. it's very

  1172. isolating

  1173. and so in

  1174. response to

  1175. that our

  1176. culture does

  1177. the best

  1178. it can

  1179. it says

  1180. you need

  1181. to forgive

  1182. yourself

  1183. but here's

  1184. the problem

  1185. I use this

  1186. example with

  1187. them

  1188. imagine

  1189. this

  1190. you know

  1191. you

  1192. manage to

  1193. talk these

  1194. other three

  1195. into lending

  1196. you $5,000

  1197. and you

  1198. didn't tell

  1199. any of the

  1200. three of

  1201. them

  1202. that you

  1203. were doing

  1204. it to

  1205. all of

  1206. them

  1207. and then

  1208. after you

  1209. got the

  1210. $5,000

  1211. you left

  1212. and you

  1213. never came

  1214. back

  1215. you never

  1216. paid

  1217. them

  1218. and I

  1219. can tell

  1220. you for

  1221. each of

  1222. those three

  1223. young women

  1224. $5,000

  1225. is a lot

  1226. of money

  1227. I mean even

  1228. for some

  1229. of us

  1230. who have

  1231. a lot

  1232. of money

  1233. who could

  1234. write a

  1235. check

  1236. for $5,000

  1237. we'd be

  1238. pretty

  1239. upset

  1240. if somebody

  1241. stole $5,000

  1242. on us

  1243. and even

  1244. worse

  1245. if we

  1246. found out

  1247. that we

  1248. were just

  1249. one of

  1250. three

  1251. and that

  1252. in fact

  1253. it was

  1254. $15,000

  1255. and then

  1256. later on

  1257. in Facebook

  1258. or Instagram

  1259. like a year

  1260. or two

  1261. or three

  1262. years later

  1263. you see

  1264. their picture

  1265. and you

  1266. read this

  1267. little testimony

  1268. that they've

  1269. had in

  1270. Facebook

  1271. about how

  1272. they did

  1273. these wrong

  1274. things to

  1275. their three

  1276. friends

  1277. and it

  1278. involved

  1279. money

  1280. and it's

  1281. really

  1282. caused

  1283. this

  1284. person

  1285. grief

  1286. and

  1287. sadness

  1288. but

  1289. and then

  1290. they write

  1291. but now

  1292. I've forgiven

  1293. myself

  1294. and I said

  1295. you wouldn't

  1296. accept that

  1297. you say

  1298. you dirty

  1299. rat

  1300. what do you

  1301. mean

  1302. you forgave

  1303. yourself

  1304. like for

  1305. those of us

  1306. who've been

  1307. victims of

  1308. abuse

  1309. and then

  1310. you find

  1311. out later

  1312. two years

  1313. later

  1314. that the

  1315. person who

  1316. abused you

  1317. says I

  1318. now forgive

  1319. myself for

  1320. it

  1321. like what

  1322. that doesn't

  1323. make who

  1324. made who

  1325. died and

  1326. made you

  1327. God

  1328. how dare

  1329. you absolve

  1330. yourself

  1331. how dare

  1332. you forgive

  1333. yourself

  1334. you see

  1335. that just

  1336. doesn't work

  1337. it's it's a

  1338. type of

  1339. self flattery

  1340. and delusion

  1341. it's it's

  1342. taking

  1343. like to

  1344. forgive

  1345. yourself

  1346. it's actually

  1347. taking two

  1348. or three

  1349. more steps

  1350. into

  1351. narcissism

  1352. and the

  1353. more

  1354. narcissistic

  1355. and proud

  1356. and self

  1357. centered you

  1358. are the

  1359. more damage

  1360. you're going

  1361. to make

  1362. to others

  1363. in your

  1364. own life

  1365. but then

  1366. people might

  1367. say what

  1368. do you

  1369. do George

  1370. like there's

  1371. no hope

  1372. well no but

  1373. that's actually

  1374. what the

  1375. gospel is all

  1376. about

  1377. you see

  1378. because

  1379. what's

  1380. happening in

  1381. that moment

  1382. even when

  1383. there's the

  1384. two situations

  1385. because sometimes

  1386. we can be

  1387. overcome

  1388. with sorrow

  1389. and guilt

  1390. and feel bound

  1391. and all of that

  1392. when a person

  1393. has forgiven us

  1394. and sometimes

  1395. we feel that

  1396. when a person

  1397. hasn't forgiven us

  1398. and we don't

  1399. know where to

  1400. go to it

  1401. and what

  1402. this experience

  1403. is opening

  1404. the door to

  1405. is that in

  1406. the real

  1407. world

  1408. in the real

  1409. world

  1410. the world

  1411. of when we

  1412. walk out the

  1413. door of

  1414. streets and

  1415. cars and

  1416. sunsets and

  1417. bank balances

  1418. and math

  1419. and in the

  1420. real world

  1421. you have been

  1422. created by

  1423. God

  1424. and God

  1425. still exists

  1426. and God

  1427. has made you

  1428. for himself

  1429. and your heart

  1430. is restless

  1431. until it rests

  1432. in him

  1433. and every

  1434. offense against

  1435. another person

  1436. is also an

  1437. offense against

  1438. God

  1439. there's this

  1440. really wonderful

  1441. thing I think

  1442. it's in Acts 9

  1443. where Paul

  1444. before he

  1445. becomes a

  1446. Christian

  1447. has been

  1448. persecuting

  1449. Christians

  1450. and Jesus

  1451. appears to

  1452. him

  1453. and Jesus

  1454. says to

  1455. him

  1456. why have

  1457. you been

  1458. persecuting

  1459. me

  1460. because every

  1461. act of

  1462. violence and

  1463. abuse against

  1464. another person

  1465. is also an

  1466. act of abuse

  1467. against God

  1468. and so on

  1469. one hand

  1470. what we're

  1471. longing for

  1472. is to know

  1473. God

  1474. is to know

  1475. that our

  1476. creator has

  1477. forgiven us

  1478. and has

  1479. forgiven us

  1480. in a way

  1481. that is

  1482. just

  1483. that it's

  1484. not just

  1485. forgetting

  1486. it's not

  1487. just giving

  1488. me a pass

  1489. that it's

  1490. an actual

  1491. absorbing

  1492. into himself

  1493. the consequences

  1494. of what I've

  1495. done

  1496. there's that

  1497. there must be

  1498. some way

  1499. that God

  1500. can forgive

  1501. me

  1502. if you could

  1503. put up the

  1504. point

  1505. it's very

  1506. interesting

  1507. that Peter

  1508. probably calls

  1509. down a curse

  1510. upon himself

  1511. and here's

  1512. the gospel

  1513. the curse

  1514. that you

  1515. deserved

  1516. fell on

  1517. him

  1518. and the

  1519. blessing

  1520. he deserved

  1521. he put

  1522. on you

  1523. and in

  1524. you

  1525. the curse

  1526. that I

  1527. deserved

  1528. fell on

  1529. Jesus

  1530. and the

  1531. blessing

  1532. he deserved

  1533. in fact

  1534. he is

  1535. blessing

  1536. he put

  1537. on me

  1538. and in

  1539. me

  1540. when I

  1541. come to

  1542. him

  1543. and acknowledge

  1544. my guilt

  1545. and my

  1546. separation

  1547. from him

  1548. and my

  1549. inability

  1550. to save

  1551. myself

  1552. and I

  1553. call out

  1554. to him

  1555. for mercy

  1556. and grace

  1557. that Jesus

  1558. would have

  1559. mercy on

  1560. me

  1561. and Jesus

  1562. hears that

  1563. prayer

  1564. and he

  1565. has mercy

  1566. on me

  1567. and in

  1568. that moment

  1569. as I

  1570. call out

  1571. to him

  1572. for mercy

  1573. then what

  1574. happened on

  1575. the cross

  1576. 2000 years

  1577. ago

  1578. is applied

  1579. to me

  1580. and in

  1581. the Bible

  1582. the Bible

  1583. is very wise

  1584. if you trace

  1585. through blessings

  1586. and curses

  1587. and in a

  1588. sense

  1589. a blessing

  1590. and a curse

  1591. are opposite

  1592. a blessing

  1593. when we

  1594. bless something

  1595. we're asking

  1596. that they

  1597. will be

  1598. fulfilled

  1599. that it

  1600. will be

  1601. fulfilled

  1602. that they'll

  1603. be fulfilled

  1604. that not

  1605. just that

  1606. they'll be

  1607. fulfilled

  1608. but that

  1609. there's a

  1610. telos

  1611. an end

  1612. to their

  1613. life

  1614. a good

  1615. end to

  1616. their life

  1617. a meaning

  1618. to their

  1619. life

  1620. a purpose

  1621. to their

  1622. life

  1623. a place

  1624. in God's

  1625. universe

  1626. and with

  1627. God

  1628. and we're

  1629. asking that

  1630. they would

  1631. be fulfilled

  1632. that they

  1633. would come

  1634. to that

  1635. final resting

  1636. place

  1637. and move

  1638. towards

  1639. that end

  1640. that they

  1641. would thrive

  1642. that they

  1643. would connect

  1644. to creation

  1645. and to

  1646. God himself

  1647. that there

  1648. would be

  1649. restored

  1650. relationships

  1651. with God

  1652. and with

  1653. others

  1654. and that

  1655. they in a

  1656. sense would

  1657. walk in

  1658. beauty

  1659. and that

  1660. beauty would

  1661. characterize

  1662. their life

  1663. and what

  1664. is a curse

  1665. a curse

  1666. is that

  1667. you will

  1668. not find

  1669. fulfillment

  1670. but that

  1671. you will

  1672. find

  1673. frustration

  1674. that you

  1675. will not

  1676. find that

  1677. end and

  1678. purpose for

  1679. which you

  1680. were made

  1681. but that

  1682. you would

  1683. be lost

  1684. from it

  1685. that you

  1686. will not

  1687. thrive

  1688. in terms

  1689. of your

  1690. end

  1691. but that

  1692. you will

  1693. wither

  1694. it will

  1695. not be

  1696. that you

  1697. connect

  1698. with

  1699. God

  1700. and his

  1701. creation

  1702. but that

  1703. you will

  1704. be alienated

  1705. further

  1706. alienated

  1707. it is not

  1708. that you

  1709. enter into

  1710. relationship

  1711. but that

  1712. you become

  1713. more lonely

  1714. and it's

  1715. not that

  1716. you walk

  1717. in beauty

  1718. but that

  1719. you are

  1720. bound

  1721. by boring

  1722. ugliness

  1723. and that's

  1724. what we

  1725. wish

  1726. when we

  1727. say

  1728. you know

  1729. that

  1730. person

  1731. they said

  1732. they forgave

  1733. themselves

  1734. and this

  1735. is the wrong

  1736. thing they

  1737. did for me

  1738. and this

  1739. is what

  1740. I hope

  1741. I hope

  1742. they wither

  1743. I hope

  1744. everybody

  1745. knows how

  1746. bad they

  1747. are

  1748. I hope

  1749. that God

  1750. and others

  1751. have nothing

  1752. to do

  1753. with them

  1754. I hope

  1755. that their

  1756. life will

  1757. be completely

  1758. and utterly

  1759. miserable

  1760. that's what

  1761. we do

  1762. we curse

  1763. and the

  1764. wonder of

  1765. the gospel

  1766. is the

  1767. curse that

  1768. I deserved

  1769. fell on

  1770. him

  1771. and that's

  1772. why he

  1773. died on

  1774. the cross

  1775. and the

  1776. blessing that

  1777. he is

  1778. is offered

  1779. to me

  1780. and it's

  1781. offered to

  1782. you

  1783. we receive

  1784. it by

  1785. faith

  1786. and as

  1787. as you

  1788. can see

  1789. with this

  1790. image of

  1791. the curse

  1792. and the

  1793. blessing

  1794. it's

  1795. deep

  1796. we desire

  1797. a deep

  1798. disorder

  1799. in those

  1800. who've done

  1801. wrong

  1802. and we

  1803. desire for

  1804. ourselves

  1805. a deep

  1806. blessing

  1807. and that's

  1808. what we

  1809. see is

  1810. happening

  1811. in the

  1812. cross

  1813. if you

  1814. could put

  1815. up the

  1816. next point

  1817. it is

  1818. real and

  1819. true

  1820. he does

  1821. not weigh

  1822. your merits

  1823. he pardons

  1824. your offenses

  1825. we see that

  1826. actually in the

  1827. text not just

  1828. in this story

  1829. you don't have

  1830. if you have

  1831. your it's not

  1832. going to be on

  1833. the screen

  1834. because I

  1835. forgot to

  1836. ask Claire

  1837. to put it

  1838. on the

  1839. screen

  1840. but if

  1841. you back

  1842. when Jesus

  1843. in Mark

    Mark 14:48

  1844. chapter 14

  1845. verse 48

  1846. Mark

  1847. chapter

  1848. four

  1849. sorry 28

  1850. Mark

    Mark 14:28

  1851. chapter 14

  1852. verse 28

  1853. when Jesus

  1854. has predicted

  1855. that they're

  1856. all going to

  1857. flee and

  1858. leave him

  1859. alone

  1860. he says

  1861. this is

  1862. before the

  1863. cross

  1864. he knows

  1865. what he's

  1866. going to

  1867. do on

  1868. the cross

  1869. he knows

  1870. they're

  1871. going to

  1872. all mess

  1873. up and

  1874. all deny

  1875. him and

  1876. all flee

  1877. from him

  1878. but in

  1879. verse 28

  1880. he has

  1881. this promise

  1882. for them

  1883. but after

  1884. I am

  1885. raised up

  1886. in other

  1887. words after

  1888. I have

  1889. died on

  1890. the cross

  1891. all alone

  1892. I will

  1893. be raised

  1894. up and

  1895. I will

  1896. go before

  1897. you to

  1898. Galilee

  1899. in other

  1900. words I'm

  1901. looking forward

  1902. to seeing

  1903. you there

  1904. and in

  1905. Mark

    Mark 16:7

  1906. chapter

  1907. 16

  1908. verse 7

  1909. after Jesus

  1910. has died

  1911. and the

  1912. grave is

  1913. empty and

  1914. he's risen

  1915. from the

  1916. dead

  1917. Jesus

  1918. says

  1919. or that

  1920. the message

  1921. comes

  1922. but go

  1923. tell his

  1924. disciples

  1925. and

  1926. Peter

  1927. and

  1928. Peter

  1929. that he

  1930. it's the

  1931. angel says

  1932. go tell

  1933. the disciples

  1934. and Peter

  1935. Jesus

  1936. is going

  1937. to Galilee

  1938. and he

  1939. doesn't say

  1940. that so

  1941. that Peter

  1942. can stay

  1943. away from

  1944. Galilee

  1945. but so

  1946. that Peter

  1947. can go

  1948. to Galilee

  1949. and see

  1950. Jesus

  1951. curse that I

  1952. deserve fell

  1953. on him

  1954. the curse

  1955. that Peter

  1956. deserved

  1957. fell on

  1958. him

  1959. the blessing

  1960. that Peter

  1961. did not

  1962. deserve

  1963. the blessing

  1964. that Jesus

  1965. deserved

  1966. as a gift

  1967. of grace

  1968. is offered

  1969. to Peter

  1970. just a

  1971. couple of

  1972. moments

  1973. so why

  1974. is it by

  1975. the way

  1976. why is

  1977. there such

  1978. a sad

  1979. oh yeah

  1980. one other

  1981. thing

  1982. do you know

  1983. how

  1984. strong

  1985. tradition

  1986. says that

  1987. Peter died

  1988. Peter died

  1989. depending on

  1990. how you date

  1991. this

  1992. 31 to

  1993. 34 years

  1994. after this

  1995. account

  1996. Peter died

  1997. he died

  1998. because he

  1999. refused

  2000. to deny

  2001. that the

  2002. grave was

  2003. empty

  2004. and that

  2005. Jesus had

  2006. risen from

  2007. the dead

  2008. and therefore

  2009. that he

  2010. is Messiah

  2011. and Lord

  2012. and because

  2013. he refused

  2014. to deny

  2015. that Jesus

  2016. had conquered

  2017. death

  2018. he died

  2019. by crucifixion

  2020. under Nero

  2021. in Rome

  2022. in 64

  2023. why is

  2024. there a

  2025. sad

  2026. story

  2027. in the

  2028. gospel

  2029. it's

  2030. because

  2031. the need

  2032. for the

  2033. forgiveness

  2034. and these

  2035. other few

  2036. things I'll

  2037. just say

  2038. in closing

  2039. we need

  2040. this in

  2041. the real

  2042. world

  2043. and the

  2044. gospel

  2045. is about

  2046. the real

  2047. world

  2048. just very

  2049. briefly

  2050. first if

  2051. you could

  2052. put up

  2053. the thing

  2054. as this

  2055. story

  2056. and as

  2057. the gospel

  2058. grips you

  2059. it forms

  2060. you to be

  2061. patient

  2062. with each

  2063. other

  2064. if Peter

  2065. the apostle

  2066. fell

  2067. so will

  2068. you

  2069. so will

  2070. I

  2071. so will

  2072. your brother

  2073. and sister

  2074. in Christ

  2075. and if

  2076. the Lord's

  2077. grace was

  2078. greater than

  2079. Peter's fall

  2080. his grace

  2081. will be

  2082. greater for

  2083. you

  2084. and for

  2085. your brother

  2086. and sister

  2087. in Christ

  2088. as the

  2089. gospel becomes

  2090. real to us

  2091. it should

  2092. make us

  2093. less

  2094. judgmental

  2095. and anal

  2096. and hard

  2097. I know

  2098. it's hard

  2099. to believe

  2100. that this

  2101. is actually

  2102. what's supposed

  2103. to happen

  2104. if you

  2105. ever look

  2106. on Twitter

  2107. and see

  2108. how unbelievably

  2109. nasty

  2110. Christians

  2111. can be

  2112. to each

  2113. other

  2114. but I

  2115. have to be

  2116. patient with

  2117. them

  2118. because I

  2119. fall too

  2120. and if

  2121. you could

  2122. put up

  2123. the

  2124. oh

  2125. sorry

  2126. there's

  2127. no

  2128. just by

  2129. this

  2130. point

  2131. doesn't

  2132. have

  2133. it's

  2134. not

  2135. up

  2136. in the

  2137. shade

  2138. it

  2139. also

  2140. this

  2141. story

  2142. helps

  2143. us

  2144. in

  2145. prayer

  2146. as I've

  2147. said before

  2148. part of

  2149. what people

  2150. outside the

  2151. Christian faith

  2152. don't understand

  2153. is that once

  2154. the gospel

  2155. becomes real

  2156. to your

  2157. heart

  2158. it becomes

  2159. more real

  2160. to your

  2161. heart

  2162. there's a

  2163. profound

  2164. beauty

  2165. and emotional

  2166. resonance

  2167. to it

  2168. I was

  2169. talking to

  2170. a fellow

  2171. in a

  2172. coffee

  2173. shop

  2174. the

  2175. other

  2176. day

  2177. because

  2178. he said

  2179. that karma

  2180. is better

  2181. than whatever

  2182. Christianity has to say

  2183. I said no

  2184. karma has no

  2185. mercy

  2186. and when you

  2187. screw up

  2188. there's nothing

  2189. you can do

  2190. you are

  2191. helpless

  2192. and all

  2193. alone

  2194. because karma

  2195. is pitiless

  2196. but I believe

  2197. I have a

  2198. savior who

  2199. knows my

  2200. frailty

  2201. and stories

  2202. like this

  2203. means that

  2204. when you

  2205. have been

  2206. betrayed

  2207. when people

  2208. have been

  2209. wronged

  2210. you

  2211. you can

  2212. pour your

  2213. heart

  2214. out to

  2215. Jesus

  2216. who's

  2217. experienced

  2218. that

  2219. himself

  2220. and he

  2221. knows

  2222. your

  2223. heart

  2224. Allah

  2225. is

  2226. indifferent

  2227. and many

  2228. of the

  2229. eastern

  2230. religions

  2231. just tell

  2232. you that

  2233. you have

  2234. to just

  2235. get over

  2236. it

  2237. and

  2238. learn

  2239. to be

  2240. separate

  2241. from it

  2242. and just

  2243. observe

  2244. yourself

  2245. but

  2246. that

  2247. doesn't

  2248. answer

  2249. the deep

  2250. sorrow

  2251. of our

  2252. hearts

  2253. and we

  2254. can pour

  2255. out our

  2256. hearts

  2257. to a

  2258. savior

  2259. who knows

  2260. our

  2261. sorrows

  2262. who

  2263. experienced

  2264. sorrow

  2265. himself

  2266. and knows

  2267. the cursedness

  2268. of us

  2269. and became

  2270. our curse

  2271. for us

  2272. and finally

  2273. if you could

  2274. put up the

  2275. last point

  2276. the grace

  2277. of our

  2278. Lord Jesus

  2279. Christ

  2280. grounds

  2281. draws

  2282. and

  2283. I can't

  2284. read my

  2285. writing

  2286. what was

  2287. the last

  2288. one

  2289. and

  2290. fuels

  2291. that's

  2292. the word

  2293. honest

  2294. self

  2295. examination

  2296. repentance

  2297. and amendment

  2298. of life

  2299. like the

  2300. the irony

  2301. the paradox

  2302. the mystery

  2303. of the gospel

  2304. is that as

  2305. this story

  2306. as we hear

  2307. of Peter

  2308. in light of

  2309. what Jesus

  2310. does for us

  2311. on the cross

  2312. and as we

  2313. understand what

  2314. Jesus has done

2315. for us on the cross

  2316. and who he is

  2317. and we look at

  2318. these stories

  2319. rather than

  2320. making us

  2321. complacent

  2322. about the

  2323. wrong things

  2324. we do

  2325. in our

  2326. life

  2327. it actually

  2328. grounds

  2329. us looking

  2330. at ourselves

  2331. and the wrong

  2332. that we do

  2333. it actually

  2334. draws us

  2335. the story

  2336. in a sense

  2337. draws us

  2338. and pulls us

  2339. the way a light

  2340. in a dark

  2341. if you're stuck

  2342. in a dark

  2343. place

  2344. and you need to

  2345. see a light

  2346. in the distance

  2347. and it draws

  2348. you to know

  2349. you can go

  2350. that way

  2351. to safety

  2352. and it propels

  2353. you

  2354. it provides

  2355. this propelling

  2356. and it infuels

  2357. you to actually

  2358. look at yourself

  2359. because you see

  2360. no matter

  2361. how bad

  2362. I have been

  2363. and when I

  2364. realize some of

  2365. the things I've

  2366. done that are

  2367. very very bad

  2368. and I can

  2369. understand how

  2370. people would

  2371. want to curse

  2372. me

  2373. that curse

  2374. fell on him

  2375. there's no

  2376. aspect of how

  2377. cursed I am

  2378. that he does

  2379. not know

  2380. that he didn't

  2381. drink in his

  2382. cup

  2383. and so for

  2384. the first

  2385. time in your

  2386. life you can

  2387. begin to have

  2388. the emotional

  2389. and identity

  2390. security

  2391. to take

  2392. responsibility

  2393. for your own

  2394. crap

  2395. and call out

  2396. to Jesus

  2397. to help you

  2398. to move

  2399. forward

  2400. and live a

  2401. good life

  2402. live a life

  2403. of beauty

  2404. invite you

  2405. to stand

  2406. I hope

  2407. you've

  2408. gathered from

  2409. this and

  2410. from my

  2411. talk that

  2412. you're

  2413. invited

  2414. for those

  2415. of you who

  2416. are really

  2417. struggling with

  2418. guilt you're

  2419. you're invited

  2420. to know the

  2421. gospel even

  2422. more deeply

  2423. and you

  2424. are invited

  2425. there's no

  2426. better time

  2427. now than in

  2428. your prayers

  2429. to call out

  2430. to Jesus

  2431. and ask

  2432. forgiveness

  2433. and ask that

  2434. he would help

  2435. you amend

  2436. your life

  2437. and if

  2438. you've never

  2439. come to

  2440. Christ and

  2441. you start

  2442. to see the

  2443. beauty and

  2444. the power of

  2445. who he is

  2446. and the truth

  2447. of who he is

  2448. there's no

  2449. better time

  2450. now than to

  2451. call out to

  2452. him and ask

  2453. him to be

  2454. your savior

  2455. and for those

  2456. of you who are

  2457. just struggling

  2458. with sorrow

  2459. there's no

  2460. better time

  2461. now than to

  2462. pour out your

  2463. heart

  2464. and one of the

  2465. things you can

  2466. pray for us

  2467. is that we as

  2468. a congregation

  2469. will not just

  2470. share the gospel

  2471. and proclaim the

  2472. gospel but also

2473. that we will be a

  2474. community that's

  2475. shaped by the

  2476. gospel that we

  2477. will be a

  2478. community where

  2479. where it's that

  2480. people can become

  2481. more godly more

  2482. christ-like and

  2483. that through

  2484. spiritual and

  2485. and practical

  2486. friendships and

  2487. through small

  2488. groups and and

  2489. and through men's

  2490. and women's

  2491. ministry that that

  2492. we can do life

  2493. together that we

  2494. can be learn how

  2495. to be patient with

  2496. each other that we

  2497. can we can cry

  2498. together that we

  2499. can celebrate

  2500. together we can

  2501. do everything in

  2502. between together all

  2503. because of the

  2504. gospel and please

  2505. pray that that

  2506. becomes us more

  2507. and more and

  2508. more

  2509. that christ will

  2510. truly rule in the

  2511. gospel sense in

  2512. our midst let's

  2513. bow our heads in

  2514. prayer father we

  2515. thank you that

  2516. jesus would do

  2517. such an act of

  2518. love and grace and

  2519. mercy and justice

  2520. for us and we

  2521. ask lord that the

  2522. holy spirit would

  2523. bring this story and

  2524. bring the gospel and

  2525. uh deeply and

  2526. deeply into our

  2527. hearts that it

  2528. would form us

  2529. that it would form

  2530. us father to stop

  2531. flattering ourselves

  2532. and and look at

  2533. ourselves with with

  2534. with moral clarity

  2535. so that we might

  2536. repent and and you

  2537. would give us help

2538. to amend our lives and

2539. we thank you that you

2540. are so patient with us

2541. and and that our end

  2542. father in christ our

2543. end in christ is glory

  2544. is welcome from you

  2545. not weighing our merits

  2546. but pardoning our

  2547. offenses that the end

2548. of our story in christ

2549. is you smiling at us

  2550. and saying welcome

  2551. welcome my son welcome

  2552. my daughter father make

2553. christ more real to our

2554. hearts we ask this in

2555. the name of jesus your

2556. son and our savior amen

  2557. thank you

  2558. okay
