  1. And let's read together.

  2. We're going to read a passage from the New Testament, from Ephesians chapter 4, verses 17 to 24.

    Ephesians 4:17–24

  3. A very famous moment in Paul's letter.

  4. And so this is God's word to us today.

  5. Now, this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do,

  6. in the futility of their minds.

  7. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them

  8. due to their hardness of heart.

  9. They have become callous.

  10. They've given themselves up to sensuality and greed, to practice every kind of impurity.

  11. But that is not the way you learned Christ.

  12. Assuming that you have heard about Him and were taught in Him as the truth is in Jesus,

  13. to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

  14. and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

  15. and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God and true righteousness and holiness.

  16. Amen.

  17. This is God's holy word.

  18. In verse 17 here, just to look at this passage for a few minutes with you,

  19. in verse 17, Paul says this command,

  20. Do not walk any longer as the Gentiles do.

  21. And just before that, he says,

  22. Now this I say and I testify to the Lord.

  23. Now when he says,

  24. I testify to the Lord,

  25. it's a way, it's a phrase he uses to say,

  26. I speak right now with the authority of God.

  27. So the commands I'm about to give you are the very word of God.

  28. I speak with the authority of the Lord.

  29. Do not walk as the Gentiles do in darkness.

  30. Now what does he mean by that?

  31. By the word Gentile, Gentile sometimes in the Bible is used for anybody that's not Jewish.

  32. But here that's not what he means, not at all.

  33. He's talking to the Ephesians in Ephesus,

  34. and there in Ephesus there is a grand temple,

  35. very famous, the Temple of Artemis.

  36. And at the Temple of Artemis,

  37. it's the organizing principle of the whole city of Ephesus.

  38. And people go there day in and day out to worship all the gods,

  39. and they do so in all kinds of practices.

  40. And it's known as a city where people worship the gods

  41. and live in any way that they want to live.

  42. So it was known as a party city,

  43. a place of a lot of darkness at times.

  44. And Paul says,

  45. if you've become a Christian,

  46. if you've experienced the grace of Jesus in your life,

  47. if God has brought light through the cross and resurrection of Christ to you,

  48. if you believe in Jesus,

  49. don't live that life anymore.

  50. Don't walk in the way the city teaches you to walk.

  51. Put away the normal patterns of the culture.

  52. In other words,

  53. the word Gentile there just means the normal patterns and assumptions

  54. of the default culture of sinful humanity.

  55. It just means that by default,

  56. we're all carried into the patterns of our culture.

  57. And he said,

  58. but put that away.

  59. You've become a Christian.

  60. Your life has been changed.

  61. That's what he says.

  62. Now,

  63. that means,

  64. he's talking about something very important on New Year's Day.

  65. Verse 15,

  66. just before this,

  67. we didn't read this.

  68. He says,

  69. grow up in every way into him like Jesus.

  70. And so he says,

  71. he says,

  72. the goal,

  73. the goal of life,

  74. grow up in every way like Jesus Christ.

  75. Put away the normal patterns and assumptions of the culture around you.

  76. Now,

  77. what is Paul talking about there?

  78. He's talking about change.

  79. He's talking about deep change in your life.

  80. Put away the normal patterns that the culture teaches you,

  81. and instead,

  82. put on,

  83. become like Christ.

  84. Deep change.

  85. That is what every single person on January 1st,

  86. 2025 wants.

  87. We want change this year.

  88. We want to be different.

  89. We want this year to be better than last year.

  90. Of course,

  91. always.

  92. Every new year,

  93. we want that.

  94. And I was reading this week an article about change and about the industries that make the most money in January every single year.

  95. Some of them you will absolutely expect,

  96. right?

  97. So,

  98. of course,

  99. who profits most from January 1st?

  100. Deep desire to change.

  101. Gym memberships,

  102. obviously,

  103. are always the number one.

  104. Book sales increase immensely in January.

  105. Counseling and therapy clinics and centers go up by at least 15% on average in the UK and the States by the stats I read in January.

  106. The unexpected were not surprising,

  107. but I hadn't thought about financial advisors,

  108. budgeting apps.

  109. After Christmas,

  110. you've got to get a budgeting app.

  111. And lastly,

  112. language learning software,

  113. Babel,

  114. Duolingo.

  115. Duolingo makes almost all of its money from January subscriptions.

  116. Why?

  117. Because we want to change.

  118. Every single person wants to change.

  119. Paul tells you here,

  120. let me just give you three things about change here for this year,

  121. very briefly,

  122. that Paul says.

  123. First,

  124. he says that Christianity actually can provide for you the goal of change,

  125. a real goal,

  126. something to actually change into.

  127. And so,

  128. he says in verse 15,

  129. grow up in every way into the maturity of becoming like Jesus.

  130. And then he says,

  131. and put away the patterns of darkness that the culture teaches you.

  132. What does he mean by that?

  133. I can only give you one thing he means by it today.

  134. Verse 19.

  135. In verse 19,

  136. he says,

  137. the Gentiles have given themselves,

  138. the normal culture has given itself up to sensuality,

  139. greed,

  140. and to practice every kind of impurity.

  141. Now,

  142. what does he say?

  143. What does he say?

  144. Giving yourself over.

  145. This is Paul's special way of saying,

  146. it is the normal default pattern of every culture,

  147. because of our human disposition towards sin and rebellion against God,

  148. to love and to get addicted to things in this life more than we love God.

  149. He says,

  150. they've given themselves over.

  151. And it means that the normal pattern of culture in Ephesus and in Edinburgh in 2024

  152. is to love,

  153. what does he list?

  154. Greed and sensuality,

  155. sexuality,

  156. lust,

  157. money,

  158. bank account,

  159. success,

  160. every type of thing you can get your hands on in this life,

  161. to make something of yourself,

  162. to find meaning in this life.

  163. He says,

  164. the normal default position of human beings is that we will chase anything we can in this life

  165. to make something of ourselves.

  166. That real change,

  167. most people are seeking change in 2025.

  168. And what change is that?

  169. They want to make more money.

  170. They want to be more successful.

  171. They want to get a hold of their career.

  172. They want to have more relationships,

  173. better relationships.

  174. And he says,

  175. that's actually the default pattern,

  176. the sense that the most important things in our lives is money,

  177. bank account,

  178. wealth,

  179. success.

  180. And he says,

  181. but no,

  182. that's thinking in darkness.

  183. It's not walking in the true light.

  184. What does he say?

  185. Verse 15,

  186. every single human being is made with one ultimate goal.

  187. It is what we really want.

  188. It is the change that we really need.

  189. And that is to make this year about becoming more like Jesus.

  190. That the thing that we really need,

  191. no matter what the circumstances are,

  192. no matter bank account,

  193. no matter success or failure in your career,

  194. is to become more like Christ.

  195. That's the true goal,

  196. the true resolution,

  197. the ultimate resolution,

  198. is to become more and more like Christ this year.

  199. It's,

  200. I think,

  201. pretty common today in therapy,

  202. counseling,

  203. the books that will be purchased in January,

  204. even maybe through a friend,

  205. that it's pretty easy for us to identify

  206. the problems that we struggle with in our lives.

  207. You can go to counseling.

  208. You can go to therapy.

  209. You can pick up a lot of really good books

  210. at Blackwell's and Waterstones.

  211. And they will help you realize

  212. that maybe you struggle with greed.

  213. Maybe you struggle with careerism.

  214. You're too dedicated to it.

  215. Maybe you struggle with relationship

  216. after relationship after relationship.

  217. You chase and you chase and you chase.

  218. The modern world has gotten pretty good

  219. at identifying the problems.

  220. It's not too hard to see.

  221. Your friend can tell you

  222. if you don't know what your big problem is.

  223. But then who should you become?

  224. You know,

  225. you can go

  226. and get all these really good helps

  227. to identify the problems

  228. that you have deep down in your life,

  229. in your soul,

  230. that everybody else around you

  231. maybe can see already.

  232. But then the question is left,

  233. okay, you've put away greed,

  234. but now what?

  235. What's the goal?

  236. Who should you become?

  237. And Christianity comes and says

  238. there is one supreme goal in this life,

  239. and it's to become more and more conformed

  240. to the image of Jesus Christ Himself.

  241. Will you think about this?

  242. Will you make 2025

  243. a year

  244. where you say,

  245. I want to experience

  246. more and more

  247. the wisdom

  248. of Jesus Christ in my life?

  249. I want to experience

  250. more and more

  251. the courage of Christ,

  252. the insight,

  253. the passion,

  254. the zeal

  255. for life and ministry

  256. that He had,

  257. the compassion

  258. for people.

  259. I want this year

  260. to be a year

  261. where I'll become

  262. more patient,

  263. more loving,

  264. more faithful,

  265. more gentle,

  266. more meek,

  267. more mild,

  268. more strong,

  269. courageous like He was.

  270. I want to,

  271. I want above all else

  272. much more

  273. than I want to learn French

  274. on Duolingo,

  275. much more than that.

  276. I want

  277. to have the overwhelming joy

  278. that Jesus Christ has.

  279. And Paul says in verse 15

  280. that that is exactly

  281. what you're made for,

  282. to become more and more like Him.

  283. So second,

  284. how,

  285. the path,

  286. how can you get there,

  287. the path to change?

  288. Paul says here,

  289. very briefly,

  290. number one,

  291. let me give you two,

  292. two ways to seek this.

  293. The first is this.

  294. Paul says,

  295. be who you are this year.

  296. Be who you are.

  297. What does he mean?

  298. He says,

  299. stop walking in the cultural addictions

  300. of the Gentiles,

  301. the normal default rhythm

  302. of the culture of Ephesus

  303. or Edinburgh.

  304. And he says,

  305. instead,

  306. that is not the way

  307. you learn Christ.

  308. And so,

  309. down here,

  310. he turns

  311. and uses three verbs

  312. to talk about,

  313. these educational verbs

  314. to talk about

  315. the way to change.

  316. And he says,

  317. it's not the way

  318. you learn Christ.

  319. It's not what you've heard.

  320. It's not what you've been taught.

  321. And immediately,

  322. there's a sense

  323. in which you might come

  324. and say,

  325. is Paul here talking about,

  326. well,

  327. the real path

  328. to become like Jesus?

  329. The real path

  330. to seek change in my life

  331. is education.

  332. You know,

  333. he says,

  334. that's not the way

  335. you learned Christ.

  336. That's not the way

  337. you were taught.

  338. That's not the way

  339. you heard.

  340. I need to be educated more.

  341. I need to be more,

  342. I need to merely

  343. have more discipline

  344. and more education

  345. and I can become

  346. more and more like Christ

  347. and reach my goals.

  348. And it starts to sound like,

  349. if you go that route,

  350. like Christianity

  351. has become

  352. like every other world religion.

  353. That deep change

  354. in your life

  355. is something that you have

  356. to completely do

  357. by yourself.

  358. It's about education.

  359. It's about discipline.

  360. It's about a path

  361. that you pursue.

  362. It's the same sense

  363. in which Islam comes

  364. and says,

  365. look,

  366. if you want to experience

  367. change in your life,

  368. there's a five-fold path,

  369. five pillars.

  370. If the Buddha came

  371. and what did he say?

  372. He said,

  373. there's an eight-fold path

  374. to have deep change

  375. in your life,

  376. change that lasts,

  377. change that matters.

  378. And you can come today

  379. and you can have

  380. really good helps

  381. in your life,

  382. practices,

  383. cognitive behavioral therapy,

  384. all sorts of things

  385. that are very, very good.

  386. But for a moment,

  387. it could come across

  388. and seem here

  389. like Paul is talking

  390. about some kind of pathway

  391. that you pursue

  392. of education

  393. to better yourself

  394. and to really seek

  395. to become like Jesus

  396. in your life.

  397. And verse 22

  398. is absolutely critical,

  399. absolutely key.

  400. What does he say

  401. in verse 22?

  402. He says,

  403. put to,

  404. you've learned this,

  405. to put off your old self,

  406. which belongs

  407. to your former manner

  408. of life

  409. and is corrupt

  410. through deceitful desires

  411. and to be renewed

  412. in the spirit of your minds

  413. and to put on the new self.

  414. Now he says,

  415. you've got to put off

  416. your old self,

  417. you've got to put on

  418. your new self,

  419. but look,

  420. you've got to see,

  421. you've got to be

  422. really careful here

  423. and to see exactly

  424. what Paul says

  425. for just one minute.

  426. And it's this,

  427. John Stott,

  428. the great English commentator,

  429. he points this out.

  430. He says,

  431. when you really look

  432. at these verbs,

  433. when you really look

  434. at the language

  435. that's being used here,

  436. this language,

  437. to put off your old self,

  438. look,

  439. it's not the way

  440. you learned Christ.

  441. No,

  442. put off your old self.

  443. No,

  444. it doesn't say that.

  445. It says,

  446. to put off your old self

  447. and to put on

  448. your new self,

  449. the new self.

  450. And John Stott says this,

  451. these are past tense,

  452. middle infinitive verbs.

  453. Right?

  454. Yeah?

  455. Past tense,

  456. middle infinitives.

  457. That's very important.

  458. Why is it so important?

  459. It's important.

  460. Okay,

  461. move on from that.

  462. It's important for this reason.

  463. Because it could be

  464. translated like this,

  465. having put off

  466. your old self

  467. and having put on

  468. your new self,

  469. be renewed.

  470. Meaning,

  471. he's not talking about here,

  472. he's not talking here

  473. about a command.

  474. He's not saying,

  475. this year,

  476. the most important thing

  477. you can do

  478. is put off your old self

  479. and put off your new self.

  480. That's not the first thing.

  481. No.

  482. He's saying,

  483. having put off your old self

  484. and having already received

  485. the new self,

  486. renew your mind.

  487. Meaning,

  488. he's saying

  489. that when you come

  490. to Jesus Christ,

  491. the change

  492. has already happened.

  493. It's already happened.

  494. Now,

  495. the first thing

  496. that Paul says

  497. the pathway to change

  498. is this year,

  499. 2025,

  500. you've got to be

  501. who you are.

  502. You've got to be

  503. who you are.

  504. What is he saying?

  505. You know,

  506. you look at yourself

  507. and say,

  508. but I am greedy.

  509. I am selfish.

  510. I do struggle

  511. with lusts

  512. of all kinds,

  513. loving things

  514. in this world

  515. far too much.

  516. The old man,

  517. the old self in me

  518. is doing a lot of battle

  519. and sometimes winning.

  520. But here,

  521. Paul says,

  522. no,

  523. your old self

  524. has already been taken away.

  525. And you've got to see

  526. what he's saying.

  527. He's saying,

  528. the first thing,

  529. when God looks at you

  530. through Jesus,

  531. because of Jesus,

  532. he sees an emerald.

  533. He sees a diamond.

  534. He sees a finished product.

  535. He sees somebody

  536. who is beautiful

  537. in character

  538. and integrity.

  539. Why?

  540. Because when Jesus Christ

  541. went to the cross,

  542. he took on

  543. all of your injustice.

  544. This is the metaphor

  545. of clothing.

  546. He took on

  547. the clothing

  548. of your selfishness.

  549. He took on

  550. the clothing

  551. of your injustice

  552. so that you could

  553. receive his clothing,

  554. the clothing of his righteousness,

  555. so that you could be

  556. in God's sight

  557. made beautiful,

  558. pronounced beautiful,

  559. even though you're struggling,

  560. even though you aren't always.

  561. First thing,

  562. and we'll move

  563. to the final point,

  564. Christianity is unlike

  565. every other world religion,

  566. everything on offer

  567. in the bookshelf

  568. at Waterstones.

  569. There's nothing like it

  570. because what it says

  571. is this,

  572. the true path to change,

  573. to becoming like Christ,

  574. is to first see

  575. that when you come

  576. to faith in Jesus,

  577. God changes you.

  578. In his sight,

  579. you are pronounced clean,

  580. forgiven,

  581. beautiful,

  582. having the character

  583. of Jesus Christ himself

  584. even though

  585. it's not visible yet.

  586. Be who you are.

  587. Lastly,

  588. that means,

  589. okay,

  590. what do you do with that?

  591. How do you really

  592. take a hold of that

  593. in your life this year?

  594. Let me get very practical

  595. and very,

  596. right here at the

  597. very end.

  598. Okay,

  599. he says this,

  600. practice this change.

  601. All right,

  602. now that you know,

  603. if you've come to Jesus,

  604. if you have faith

  605. in your life,

  606. in God's eyes,

  607. you are already

  608. an emerald.

  609. And now you've got

  610. to practice that.

  611. And so,

  612. yes,

  613. now the command,

  614. put off your old self,

  615. be renewed

  616. in the spirit of your mind,

  617. and put on the new self.

  618. Paul says,

  619. how do you do that?

  620. All he means is this,

  621. first,

  622. put off the old self,

  623. now practice this,

  624. be who you are,

  625. practice it,

  626. take it up,

  627. take hold of these goods

  628. that you've been given.

  629. Here's how you do it.

  630. First,

  631. putting off the old self

  632. simply means this,

  633. it means that when you are alone,

  634. you've got to live

  635. in the presence of God

  636. in that moment.

  637. Putting off the old self

  638. means that in the most

  639. important moments of your life,

  640. which are the small moments,

  641. the moments,

  642. especially when you are

  643. by yourself,

  644. you've got to embrace

  645. the reality that you are

  646. living in the presence of God.

  647. Put away the old self.

  648. That means when temptation comes,

  649. you've got to fight,

  650. fight,

  651. fight,

  652. to say in that moment,

  653. I am in the presence

  654. of the living God,

  655. and I've already been changed,

  656. and I want to live into that.

  657. It's all about the small moments,

  658. not the big moments,

  659. the small moments.

  660. And then he says,

  661. step two,

  662. and then be renewed

  663. in the spirit of your mind.

  664. What is that?

  665. It doesn't say be renewed

  666. in the Holy Spirit of your mind.

  667. That's not the word

  668. being used here.

  669. It's be renewed

  670. in the spirit of your mind,

  671. meaning your spirit,

  672. your heart,

  673. your soul,

  674. your affections

  675. have to be renewed

  676. in that moment.

  677. Your mind has to work hard

  678. in that moment

  679. to renew your spirit,

  680. your affections,

  681. your heart.

  682. So what do you do?

  683. First you say,

  684. in the moment of temptation,

  685. in the moment where you desire

  686. to sin,

  687. to walk away from God

  688. in darkness,

  689. you've got to first say,

  690. I've already been changed.

  691. I'm an emerald.

  692. I want to say no to that.

  693. Put it off.

  694. Secondly,

  695. now,

  696. mind,

  697. talk to spirit,

  698. talk to your heart,

  699. talk to yourself,

  700. and say,

  701. self,

  702. you are already changed.

  703. You've got to be who you are.

  704. It's to talk to yourself

  705. and to allow that

  706. to become prayer.

  707. And to say,

  708. Lord,

  709. I'm in your presence right now,

  710. and right now,

  711. I need strength.

  712. I need renewal.

  713. And third step,

  714. final step,

  715. put on the new self.

  716. And what is that?

  717. It's the choice,

  718. the fight,

  719. to say today,

  720. right now,

  721. in this moment,

  722. I'm going to choose

  723. patience over impatience.

  724. I'm going to be slow to anger

  725. instead of quick to anger.

  726. I'm going to choose

  727. the affection I have

  728. for Jesus Christ,

  729. my Savior,

  730. more than my lust.

  731. It's a fight.

  732. You already are

  733. in God's sight,

  734. the emerald.

  735. Justification,

  736. and now seek

  737. sanctification.

  738. Practice it.

  739. Become who you are.

  740. Become who you are.

  741. And let me give you

  742. two applications

  743. and we'll finish.

  744. First is this.

  745. Deep change,

  746. fighting idols in your life,

  747. becoming like Christ this year.

  748. Boy,

  749. what is on offer here?

  750. What is on offer

  751. is a life of joy.

  752. More and more joy,

  753. more and more glorification of God.

  754. More and more becoming like Jesus

  755. means more and more joy,

  756. deep joy,

  757. surprising joy in your life.

  758. And I just want to say

  759. that that is not exactly,

  760. that will not come to you

  761. like a gym membership

  762. brings you benefits.

  763. So maybe you joined the gym

  764. last week

  765. to prepare for today.

  766. Whatever else it is

  767. you're seeking change

  768. in practical ways

  769. in your life this year.

  770. If you go to the gym

  771. every day,

  772. most days this month,

  773. and you eat really well,

  774. really healthily,

  775. on January 30th,

  776. you will look in the mirror

  777. and what will happen?

  778. You will see,

  779. I have changed.

  780. Maybe it's a small change,

  781. but you will notice

  782. there will be something

  783. that will have changed,

  784. right?

  785. The normal pathway to fitness.

  786. Becoming like Jesus

  787. is not like that.

  788. It's probably not the case

  789. that you will look up

  790. on January 30th

  791. and see all the ways

  792. that you've changed,

  793. that you've become

  794. more and more the emerald,

  795. the sanctified emerald

  796. that God has pronounced

  797. that you are

  798. through justification.

  799. Instead,

  800. probably what you need

  801. to think about

  802. is coming back here

  803. or wherever you may be

  804. in the world.

  805. On January 1st,

  806. 2026,

  807. and saying,

  808. in what ways

  809. did God change me

  810. last year?

  811. From a person

  812. who lacked joy

  813. into a person

  814. full of joy,

  815. from a person

  816. who is very negative

  817. all the time

  818. to a person

  819. of gratitude.

  820. A person who really

  821. struggles with impatience

  822. into a person

  823. of patience.

  824. You'll probably need

  825. to give it a year

  826. of fighting,

  827. fighting,

  828. fighting,

  829. to become more

  830. and more like Christ,

  831. to see results,

  832. to see,

  833. to visibly see.

  834. Boy,

  835. your spouse,

  836. your friend,

  837. your partner,

  838. they'll be able

  839. to tell you

  840. faster than that.

  841. But it's slow.

  842. There's a lot

  843. of patience here.

  844. Lastly,

  845. no, yes,

  846. lastly.

  847. I thought I had

  848. something else there,

  849. but I don't.

  850. Lastly,

  851. the risk.

  852. There's a risk here

  853. on January 1st,

  854. 2025,

  855. of doing what we all

  856. struggle with so much,

  857. and that's never starting.

  858. Never starting.

  859. Not,

  860. boy,

  861. don't hear.

  862. You are saved

  863. by grace through faith.

  864. That is why

  865. Jesus,

  866. through the cross

  867. and resurrection,

  868. God looks at you,

  869. if you're a Christian today,

  870. and says,

  871. you're already an emerald.

  872. Pronounced clean,

  873. forgiven.

  874. And now,

  875. fight.

  876. Work out your salvation

  877. with fear and trembling.

  878. Fight to become

  879. the emerald

  880. in this life

  881. that you are

  882. in God's sight.

  883. That's what we're,

  884. sanctification is what

  885. we're talking about.

  886. There's a risk

  887. of never growing

  888. very much.

  889. As a Christian.

  890. You can be a Christian

  891. and never grow

  892. very much in your life.

  893. Never really experience

  894. the depths of joy

  895. that are on offer.

  896. Jean-Paul Sartre,

  897. not a Christian,

  898. but a very famous

  899. French existentialist

  900. philosopher,

  901. he said it like this,

  902. something very true.

  903. He said,

  904. I have led

  905. a toothless life,

  906. a toothless life.

  907. I have never

  908. bitten into anything.

  909. I was waiting.

  910. I was reserving

  911. my teeth for later on,

  912. and I've looked up

  913. and just noticed

  914. that now my teeth

  915. are gone.

  916. Now there's a real danger

  917. and real risk

  918. of always saying,

  919. tomorrow,

  920. I will fight this

  921. vice and bad habit.

  922. Tomorrow,

  923. I will get serious

  924. about becoming

  925. more like Jesus.

  926. Tomorrow,

  927. next month,

  928. 2026 will be the year.

  929. When I leave university,

  930. that will be the time.

  931. when this move

  932. is passed,

  933. when this change

  934. in our circumstances

  935. is passed,

  936. then I'll be able

  937. to pray and read scripture

  938. and be a more patient person.

  939. And boy,

  940. the risk is not

  941. losing God's grace.

  942. No,

  943. forgive me,

  944. that's not the risk.

  945. No,

  946. but the risk

  947. is looking up

  948. year in,

  949. year out,

  950. and saying,

  951. decades have gone by

  952. and I've not yet

  953. experienced the joy

  954. that the scriptures

  955. talk about

  956. in this life.

  957. The change

  958. that's on offer to me

  959. of becoming more like Jesus

  960. in this life,

  961. sanctification is this,

  962. Ephesians 1, 3,

  963. you already have

  964. every spiritual blessing.

  965. Jesus has already

  966. given it in the gospel.

  967. So now,

  968. take hold of it.

  969. The final word.

  970. It would be like

  971. a starving man,

  972. a starving woman,

  973. starving to death

  974. and being gifted,

  975. totally gifted

  976. with a whole storeroom,

  977. a kitchen full of food,

  978. ready.

  979. To eat.

  980. And someone comes

  981. to that starving man,

  982. that starving woman

  983. and says,

  984. do you have food to eat?

  985. And objectively,

  986. they have every blessing.

  987. Everything has already

  988. been given to them.

  989. Every pronouncement

  990. has been made over them.

  991. The kitchen is full.

  992. The storehouse is full.

  993. But they're not walking in

  994. and opening the cabinet.

  995. Subjectively,

  996. they're not taking it.

  997. They're not taking hold of it.

  998. Don't starve yourself this year.

  999. Take up and eat.

  1000. Become like Jesus.

  1001. Fight.

  1002. Fight.

  1003. Because you have already

  1004. been given grace.

  1005. Because you are already

1006. an emerald in his sight.

  1007. Let us pray.

  1008. Father,

  1009. we ask

  1010. that this year

  1011. would be a year

  1012. of deep change.

1013. The real change we need.

1014. not merely the beautiful things

  1015. of learning languages

  1016. and getting fitter

  1017. and reading more books

  1018. and eating better

1019. or whatever it is, Lord,

  1020. but the real change

  1021. of being conformed

1022. to the image of the Son.

  1023. Give us, Lord,

1024. a desire for the fight

  1025. to put off,

  1026. to mortify,

  1027. to kill

  1028. the habits,

  1029. the sins,

  1030. the vices of darkness

1031. that our city teaches us,

  1032. that our selfishness

  1033. calls for,

  1034. and to put on

1035. the fruit of the Spirit.

1036. So we want to be

  1037. more like Jesus, Lord,

1038. because we want more joy

  1039. in our lives

1040. and because it gives you glory

  1041. and because we want

  1042. to enjoy you forever,

1043. even in these moments now.

1044. From one degree of glory

  1045. to the other,

1046. we ask that you would

1047. grow us up in this year.

1048. And we pray that through

  1049. because of the ground

  1050. of your grace,

1051. not in order to get it.

  1052. And we pray that

  1053. in Jesus' name.

  1054. Amen.

  1055. Amen.

  1056. Amen.

  1057. Amen.
