  1. Now, we turn to read together from God's Word, and we have two Bible readings this morning.

  2. The first from the Old Testament, from the book of the prophet Micah, and we'll read from chapter 6, and the verses marked 1 to 9.

  3. This is the Word of God.

  4. Hear what the Lord says.

  5. Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.

  6. Hear, you mountains, the indictment of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth.

  7. For the Lord has an indictment against his people, and he will contend with Israel.

  8. O my people, what have I done to you?

  9. How have I wearied you?

  10. Answer me.

  11. For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery.

  12. And I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

  13. O my people, remember what Balak, king of Moab, devised, and what Balaam, the son of Beor, answered him.

  14. And what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of God.

  15. With what shall I come before the Lord, and by myself before God on high?

  16. What shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?

  17. Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of ram, with tens of thousands of rivers of oil?

  18. Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

  19. He has told you, O man, what is good.

  20. And what does the Lord require of you?

  21. But to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

  22. And then our second reading is from the Gospel according to Matthew chapter 5, the beginning of the famous sermon on the mount.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  29. Jeremiah said that.

  30. Jeremiah said that.

  31. Why God was a stranger in the land in Scotland.

  32. Because Jeremiah said he was a stranger in ancient Israel because the irreligious had no time for God.

  33. And the religious people had no heart for God.

  34. And the leaders had no zeal for God.

  35. And even committed believers had no thirst for God.

  36. And of course, of course, of course, of course, of course, of course, of course, of course, of course.

  37. And of course, that description of that land then is a description that could fit many lands at many times through history when we think of how it is.

  38. But into the situation in Israel at one stage comes the prophet Micah.

  39. And he comes really with a message that says, look, God is a stranger in these days because the people are practicing idolatry.

  40. And bribery and corruption, the people are being oppressed by the rich.

  41. The religious leaders are career diplomats just supporting the status quo because it's in their interests.

  42. And then it's now commercial interests.

  43. Money was the first commandment.

  44. It was what ruled in all things.

  45. And Micah comes into this situation and this scene where God seems to be a stranger.

  46. And he brings a message from God.

  47. And the message from God is there will be judgment.

  48. There will be destruction.

  49. There will be ruin and exile.

  50. But he brings a message of hope as well.

  51. Because he said, look, if you will just listen to God, if you will listen to God, he will actually bring deliverance to you.

  52. Deliverance from those armies of neighboring nations that are ready to invade you.

  53. He'll spare you that.

  54. He will actually bring blessings.

  55. And he will send a savior who will be born in the city of David in Bethlehem.

  56. This is what God will do.

  57. But you have to listen to him.

  58. You have to set your hearts to obey and to follow and to serve him.

  59. You have to change your behavior and live as God requires.

  60. And if you do that, the future will not be one of darkness and destruction and ruin.

  61. And so in verses 6 and 7 that we read, eventually, I'm sorry about that.

  62. But the people were talking to Micah and they were saying, well, look, what have we got to do?

  63. Okay, we're with you.

  64. Yeah, we forgot what God had done for us in the past.

  65. All his mighty acts and how good he was.

  66. We forgot all that.

  67. But what have we got to do?

  68. Have we got to bring, you know, burnt offerings?

  69. Will that please God?

  70. Will we, you know, will we sacrifice thousands of rams?

  71. Would that do?

  72. Or what about, will we even offer up our firstborn children?

  73. Is that what God wants?

  74. And Micah comes and in those famous words that I'm sure maybe nearly all of us must know and have heard about,

  75. he says, no, look, you already know.

  76. You know, the scriptures, there are so many different places where God has made it clear what he wants.

  77. He's told you what he wants.

  78. You're to do justly.

  79. You're to love mercy.

  80. And you're to walk humbly with your God.

  81. Simple, but not easy.

  82. Clear, not confusing.

  83. On Wednesday, those of us who were here at our New Year's Day service,

  84. our minister, Corey, was reminding us that this is a good time.

  85. For people to have a checkup on their health.

  86. Or maybe to have a checkup on their finances that everything is okay.

  87. But it's also a very good time for a spiritual checkup, isn't it?

  88. You know, the old year is past and God has promised to leave that in the past.

  89. The new year is coming.

  90. So how is it going to be with us?

  91. We read what Jesus said about the character of his followers at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount.

  92. But there's a sense in which these few verses in Micah, they're just that bit clear.

  93. They're very basic, aren't they?

  94. To the Christian life as we've been taught it.

  95. We are to do justly.

  96. We are to love mercy.

  97. And we're to walk humbly.

  98. We're to do justly.

  99. That just simply means, doesn't it, we are to live rightly with integrity.

  100. The scriptures teach us again and again that our God is a God of love.

  101. And it is righteousness that he loves.

  102. He is a righteous God.

  103. His ways are righteous.

  104. Always, always have been.

  105. And he wants his people to live righteously.

  106. The prophet Habakkuk says, look, God is of purer eyes than to behold iniquity.

  107. He hates that which is wrong, which is evil, which is wicked.

  108. And doing justly, it just means, doesn't it, living rightly, honestly.

  109. Not lying, not deceiving, not stealing, not taking advantage of other people.

  110. But living in a way that's upright, that's fair, that's just, that's honest.

  111. Keeping your word.

  112. Now, we can all see that that's not happening in the world as it is at the minute.

  113. We can all see that.

  114. We can all see how other people aren't doing justly.

  115. They're not living rightly.

  116. You know, politicians, estate agents, second-hand car salesmen, they've become a stereotype, haven't they,

  117. for people who are crooks, who are not doing right.

  118. Now, not all of them are like that.

  119. But we've just got used to thinking in that way, they're not going to be straight with you.

  120. You know, and people talk about spin nowadays.

  121. You know, where you turn the facts around so that they're not absolutely the way they should be presented,

  122. but they're presented in a way that helps you.

  123. You know, and it's almost become the norm that it's all right to cut corners in your work.

  124. You know, it's kind of all right, you know, to run other people down and be critical of them.

  125. You know what, look, the smart fellow, the guy who gets away with things.

  126. There's kind of, you know, a wee bit of grudging respect.

  127. An American told me not so long ago about the President-elect, Donald Trump,

  128. how he'd actually got away with not paying tax for a while.

  129. And I said, well, gosh, you know, I thought that would be kind of a bit strange.

  130. You know, I think in Britain, we maybe wouldn't elect somebody who, you know, evaded tax or tax.

  131. Oh, but he said, a lot of folk in America think that's a great idea,

  132. and they would do it if they could.

  133. You know, now, you know, Americans are no worse than us.

  134. It just, it's pervasive, this lack of righteousness and integrity.

  135. But we see it so easily in others.

  136. But what about us?

  137. Are we absolutely honest and upright, totally just in all of our dealings?

  138. You know, because it's very easy to be tainted by the world's standards.

  139. And honesty and integrity isn't the common virtue that it used to be.

  140. I'm sure some of you will remember the story.

  141. I think it was August or September last year,

  142. the man who found a bag with £10,000 in used banknotes on the London Underground.

  143. And the story became national news because he actually returned it.

  144. And that was so unusual.

  145. People would not expect that to happen.

  146. But what about God?

  147. We know how we ought to act with our relations, with our families,

  148. with the people we work with, with our neighbours, the people in church.

  149. But, you know, we have a good idea about that.

  150. But, you know, Micah is challenging the people here

  151. because they're going against God.

  152. They're living in a way that is offending and hurting the living God.

  153. And God himself says to them,

  154. Look, what have I done to you, my people?

  155. What have I done?

  156. You know, how have I worried you?

  157. You know, they weren't living for him.

  158. And you and I have a relationship with God if we're Christians.

  159. And are we being honest with God every day, every week?

  160. Do we act justly towards him?

  161. You see, we've all made vows, haven't we?

  162. When we come to communion, we're making vows.

  163. When we become members of a congregation like St. Columbus, we make vows.

  164. And when we marry, when we're baptised as adults,

  165. or we confirm our baptismal vows.

  166. You know, all of those things, you know, we make these vows.

  167. And God warns us in his word, the wise man in Ecclesiastes,

  168. When thou vows to a vow unto God,

  169. Defer not to pay it, for God has no pleasure in fools.

  170. We have to honour those vows to God.

  171. And, you know, it's by righteousness

  172. that we will one day be judged when we stand before God.

  173. Let's not be like those people.

  174. John Calvin talked about the people who attended his church in Geneva.

  175. And he said,

  176. All of them have a vague general reverence for God.

  177. But not all of them truly love him.

  178. C.S. Lewis, he talked about people who were semi-believers.

  179. You know, they believed enough to come to church and sing hymns and that,

  180. but it didn't go really very deep.

  181. Do justly.

  182. Let's think about doing justly in this new year.

  183. Love mercy.

  184. Ours is a religion of the forgiven.

  185. Somebody has written that.

  186. And our God is a God of mercy,

  187. a God of forgiveness.

  188. Mercy, forgiveness is the bedrock of our faith.

  189. And we are Christians

  190. because we have been forgiven

  191. by a merciful God.

  192. And the word that Micah uses here,

  193. it's a word,

  194. Corey's explained it to us quite a few times,

  195. a Hebrew word, chesed.

  196. And it really means, you know, loving kindness.

  197. Faithful loving kindness.

  198. Always being honest and faithful.

  199. And it embraces compassion as well.

  200. You know, and we're told here not just to show mercy,

  201. but to love mercy.

  202. You know, and that means,

  203. that means being glad,

  204. being willing,

  205. being delighted

  206. to reach out in forgiveness

  207. to people who've done us wrong.

  208. To reach out in compassion

  209. to people who are in need.

  210. You know, not just to forgive,

  211. in a way, grudgingly,

  212. or with a bad grace,

  213. or feeling,

  214. well, it's my duty,

  215. I have to do it.

  216. That's not what God requires of us.

  217. He wants us to love mercy.

  218. And it's not so much the action

  219. as the attitude.

  220. And again, it comes from the heart.

  221. True forgiveness,

  222. true mercy comes from the heart.

  223. But listen,

  224. it is not easy.

  225. For natural men and women,

  226. in fact, it's impossible.

  227. But even for those of us

  228. who are Christians,

  229. it is very hard.

  230. And the Jewish theologian,

  231. Dr. Jonathan Sachs,

  232. he has a book called

  233. To Heal a Fractured World.

  234. And in it, he says,

  235. forgiveness or mercy

  236. is so difficult

  237. because of justice.

  238. And he's right, isn't he?

  239. You know,

  240. when we're told

  241. we've got to forgive somebody,

  242. they've been,

  243. ah, but yeah,

  244. but look what they did to me.

  245. You know,

  246. and that's the difficulty.

  247. They should be punished,

  248. not forgiven.

  249. But for those of us

  250. who've been forgiven

  251. by Jesus,

  252. it should be part of our life.

  253. It should flow

  254. from our hearts

  255. because He is Lord

  256. of our lives now.

  257. In Mark 3,

  258. there was awful words,

  259. you know,

  260. that Jesus,

  261. it said He was grieved.

  262. What was He grieved on?

  263. When He saw the Pharisees,

  264. He was grieved

  265. at the hardness

  266. of their hearts.

  267. You know,

  268. a hard-hearted,

  269. an unforgiving Christian

  270. is a contradiction

  271. in terms.

  272. There isn't any such thing.

  273. There just isn't.

  274. And again and again

  275. in the Gospels,

  276. we read of Jesus

  277. reaching out

  278. in compassion,

  279. you know,

  280. to those who were in need

  281. and those who were

  282. neglected by others.

  283. Now,

  284. you know,

  285. the people that Jesus

  286. reached out to,

  287. some were suffering

  288. and it was their own fault.

  289. And some were suffering

  290. and it wasn't their own fault.

  291. But it didn't matter to him.

  292. He reached out to them.

  293. And,

  294. you know,

  295. you,

  296. you would be very unusual

  297. if you've never been wronged.

  298. You know,

  299. if someone has never

  300. lied about you,

  301. if someone has never

  302. taken advantage of you.

  303. And,

  304. certainly as a Christian

  305. in these days,

  306. you're bound to have been mocked

  307. or sneered at

  308. or have your views

  309. misrepresented.

  310. I mean,

  311. that,

  312. that,

  313. that,

  314. that just all happens.

  315. But the amazing thing

  316. about grace

  317. that we,

  318. we sing about it

  319. being amazing,

  320. the amazing thing

  321. about it is

  322. that the grace of God,

  323. when it transforms

  324. our hearts,

  325. makes us able,

  326. if we're walking

  327. closely enough

  328. with God,

  329. it makes us

  330. able

  331. to forgive

  332. and to show compassion.

  333. And,

  334. by the way,

  335. that's a,

  336. that's a,

  337. a,

  338. a big,

  339. big part

  340. of evangelism,

  341. of reaching out

  342. to folk

  343. in our families

  344. or our work

  345. or whatever

  346. who are not Christians.

  347. because it is

  348. a fact.

  349. It is

  350. Christians

  351. with large hearts

  352. that God

  353. uses

  354. in large

  355. measure

  356. to move

  357. people

  358. in large

  359. measure.

  360. Compassion.

  361. There's so much

  362. gratuitous

  363. cruelty

  364. and wickedness

  365. in the world.

  366. if we will

  367. just love

  368. mercy

  369. and show it

  370. what a difference

  371. that can make,

  372. what a witness

  373. that can be.

  374. And finally,

  375. walk humbly

  376. with your God.

  377. Now,

  378. you know enough

  379. to know,

  380. I'm sure,

  381. that humility

  382. doesn't mean

  383. thinking that

  384. you're no good,

  385. that you're useless,

  386. you won't ever

  387. be able to do

  388. anything to please

  389. God.

  390. That's not what

  391. humility is.

  392. Humility

  393. is having

  394. a realistic

  395. view of yourself,

  396. an honest view

  397. of what you're like.

  398. A sinner,

  399. yes,

  400. but a sinner

  401. who has had

  402. their heart

  403. and life

  404. transformed

  405. by God.

  406. The Puritan

  407. John Flavell

  408. helps us

  409. to understand.

  410. He wrote

  411. on one occasion,

  412. he says,

  413. they that know

  414. God

  415. will be humble

  416. and they

  417. that know

  418. themselves

  419. will not

  420. be proud.

  421. And the book

  422. of Proverbs

  423. helps us

  424. also to

  425. understand it

  426. by contrasting

  427. it.

  428. You know,

  429. the man or woman

  430. who is modest,

  431. humble,

  432. careful in the

  433. way they live

  434. is contrasted

  435. with people

  436. who are arrogant,

  437. presumptuous,

  438. and full of

  439. themselves.

  440. lives.

  441. And, you know,

  442. Micah speaks

  443. here about

  444. walking humbly,

  445. walking

  446. carefully

  447. with your

  448. God.

  449. And he always

  450. has in mind

  451. here people

  452. who already

  453. have a faith.

  454. You know,

  455. people who have

  456. already been

  457. touched by

  458. the grace of

  459. God and had

  460. their lives

  461. transformed.

  462. And he's

  463. talking about

  464. a life of

  465. ongoing communion

  466. and fellowship

  467. with God.

  468. Look,

  469. we have to

  470. have a realistic

  471. take on

  472. ourselves.

  473. And when we

  474. weep and

  475. mourn for

  476. the wrong

  477. that we've

  478. done,

  479. the psalmist

  480. promises,

  481. a broken and a

  482. contrite heart,

  483. the Lord

  484. will not

  485. despise.

  486. Jesus tells us,

  487. blessed are the

  488. poor in spirit,

  489. those who

  490. realize,

  491. those of us

  492. who realize

  493. that we need

  494. the grace of

  495. God and the

  496. help of God.

  497. And blessed

  498. are the merciful.

  499. You know,

  500. those who show

  501. mercy will get

  502. mercy.

  503. But on this,

  504. you know,

  505. these are days,

  506. it's difficult.

  507. And let me tell

  508. you, as you

  509. get older,

  510. you know,

  511. it's not so

  512. easy listening

  513. to all that

  514. goes on in

  515. the world.

  516. Not that our

  517. generations were

  518. any better than

  519. any others,

  520. but things

  521. changed so

  522. much.

  523. When we were

  524. growing up,

  525. you know,

  526. and Billy Graham

  527. and others

  528. will tell you,

  529. you know,

  530. children,

  531. we were seen

  532. and not heard.

  533. Our opinions

  534. didn't count.

  535. You know,

  536. nobody in school,

  537. nobody wanted

  538. to hear what you

  539. thought about

  540. Henry VIII

  541. and his wife.

  542. You know,

  543. you were told

  544. what to think.

  545. Now,

  546. it's a good

  547. thing that

  548. young minds

  549. are made

  550. to be

  551. critical

  552. and thinking.

  553. But along

  554. with that

  555. has come

  556. with self-promotion

  557. and

  558. entitlement,

  559. you know,

  560. and everybody

  561. wants to

  562. organize the

  563. world

  564. to suit

  565. themselves,

  566. to suit

  567. them.

  568. That's not

  569. how we should

  570. be.

  571. That's not

  572. how we should

  573. be.

  574. Vanity is

  575. not a good

  576. thing.

  577. It is

  578. good

  579. to have

  580. a realistic

  581. view of

  582. yourself.

  583. There's a

  584. wonderful

  585. historical

  586. parable

  587. about it.

  588. In the

  589. days of

  590. the

  591. Austro-Hungarian

  592. Empire,

  593. the

  594. emperors

  595. were buried

  596. in a little

  597. friary

  598. way outside

  599. the city.

  600. And

  601. when the

  602. emperor died,

  603. after a

  604. great service

  605. in the

  606. cathedral,

  607. a great

  608. procession

  609. would make

  610. its way

  611. down out

  612. of the

  613. city to

  614. this little

  615. friary,

  616. the grand

  617. duke would

  618. wrap on

  619. the door,

  620. a little

  621. window would

  622. open,

  623. and who

  624. is it?

  625. Oh,

  626. Franz

  627. Ferdinand,

  628. emperor of

  629. the Holy

  630. Roman Empire,

  631. and whatever.

  632. We don't

  633. know him,

  634. and it

  635. would close.

  636. And then

  637. the duke

  638. would wrap

  639. again,

  640. and who

  641. is it?

  642. Oh,

  643. Franz

  644. Ferdinand,

  645. electoral,

  646. of the

  647. Pope,

  648. Margrave

  649. of Hungary,

  650. and we

  651. don't know

  652. him.

  653. And a

  654. third time,

  655. he would

  656. wrap on

  657. the window

  658. would open.

  659. Who is

  660. it?

  661. Franz

  662. Ferdinand,

  663. a wretched

  664. sinner who

  665. looks for

  666. somewhere to

  667. lay his

  668. bones.

  669. Only in

  670. death were

  671. those great

  672. emperors

  673. divested of

  674. their vanity.

  675. For us as

  676. Christians,

  677. we should be

  678. going through

  679. this world

  680. remembering

  681. that we

  682. are just

  683. sinners,

  684. saved by

  685. grace.

  686. We've

  687. finished an

  688. old year,

  689. and we're

  690. beginning a

  691. new year.

  692. I'm sure

  693. you've

  694. reflected on

  695. it,

  696. however

  697. young or

  698. old you

  699. are,

  700. and you

  701. remember that

  702. God's been

  703. good to you.

  704. He has been

  705. good.

  706. God's been

  707. good to you

  708. and how in

  709. his providence

  710. he's taken

  711. care of you

  712. and brought

  713. you to the

  714. start of this

  715. new year.

  716. And you

  717. can't doubt

  718. his love for

  719. you in giving

  720. Jesus to be

  721. your saviour.

  722. So what do you

  723. do in return?

  724. What do we do

  725. to show our

  726. gratitude to

  727. our loving God?

  728. Well, we do

  729. what he's

  730. asked us to

  731. do.

  732. You know,

  733. we do justly.

  734. We live with

  735. integrity in a

  736. fallen world,

  737. whatever it

  738. costs.

  739. We show

  740. mercy.

  741. We reach

  742. out with

  743. compassion to

  744. everyone because

  745. there's so little

  746. of it about.

  747. And we walk

  748. humbly with

  749. our God,

  750. never forgetting

  751. that we are

  752. just sinners

  753. saved by

  754. grace.

  755. That's what he

  756. wants.

  757. Nothing more,

  758. nothing less,

  759. nothing else.

  760. Let's pray.

  761. Our loving

  762. Heavenly Father,

  763. help us to

  764. seal your

  765. words in

  766. our hearts

  767. and to go

  768. into this

  769. new year

  770. knowing the

  771. grace of God

  772. in our hearts

  773. and in our

  774. lives and

  775. seeking,

  776. Lord,

  777. above all

  778. other things

  779. to honour

  780. you by

  781. doing justly,

  782. by loving

  783. mercy,

  784. and by

  785. walking humbly.

  786. in Jesus name we pray this

  787. Amen
