  1. Father, you know how easy it is for us to get distracted.

  2. You know how easy it is for me to get distracted.

  3. You know how easy it is for me to hear something and maybe get offended and then want to stop

  4. listening.

  5. You know how easy it is for me, Father, to cling to my own fantasies and preconceptions

  6. and idols rather than face the real world.

  7. We ask, Lord, that you would gently but deeply pour out the Holy Spirit upon us this morning,

  8. not just those who are here but those joining with us online and those who will be joining

  9. with us online downstream, not live but downstream.

  10. We ask, Father, that you would gently but deeply pour out the Holy Spirit upon us, that you

  11. would form our minds and our wills and our imaginations and our affections and our desires.

  12. So that we might seek to know that which is true and beautiful and good.

  13. This we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  14. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. This could easily turn into a rant from an old guy about how the world has changed and

  17. not in good ways.

  18. But I'm going to make my best effort to not do something like that.

  19. It's not becoming of a minister to ever do rants about how one time period was better than

  20. another.

  21. Only God knows that, actually, doesn't he?

  22. But it is the case, I think, for many people in our culture today that they've lost a sense

  23. of honouring the dead.

  24. And I don't mean ancestor worship.

  25. I just mean that the practice is around having a loved one or a neighbour die.

  26. That increasingly, there's no funerals.

  27. Increasingly, there's not really anything at all to mark the death of that particular person.

  28. We pay some money for some professionals to dispose of the body.

  29. And we just sort of keep on with our very life.

  30. And so if you're here and that's sort of your attitude, or if you're watching online and

  31. that's sort of what you think, this next bit is going to be very weird to you.

  32. But it is a very deeply human thing to desire to honour a loved one who has died.

  33. It's, I think, deeply human to want to do this.

  34. And the story that I've heard, and so I didn't hear this directly from the person who did it.

  35. I heard it one person removed.

  36. And it's this.

  37. When I, before this, I looked after four little rural churches in Killaloo, Eganville, Clontarf,

  38. and Tremor.

  39. And three of those small churches had their own graveyards.

  40. They're way up the Ottawa Valley, just small little churches with graveyards.

  41. And I began my ministry there on June 1st, which is, of course, quite hot.

  42. And when I went to the church in Killaloo for the first time, I noticed that there was this shed

  43. just off to the side, a very big shed, but a shed off to the side, very big shed with sort of in the trees.

  44. And I just assumed that that was where they kept the yard maintenance stuff and ladders and all that type of stuff.

  45. I just assumed that was the case.

  46. But in January, I discovered that that actually wasn't the case.

  47. I discovered that that's where they stored the caskets of people who died in the winter.

  48. Because I did a funeral in January, and I went with the hearse, and I went and we put the body in there.

  49. And I discovered that it was sort of like not just an Anglican body storage, but sort of for the community.

  50. That's where we stored the bodies over the winter.

  51. And this is a story that I was told that had happened about 30 years earlier, but it was still very much talked about.

  52. And it's all about honoring the dead.

  53. There was a woman who had a, I guess we'd call it a phobia.

  54. She hated the idea that if she died in the winter, that her body would be in that shed, just with strangers, going down to minus 30.

  55. And she hated the idea that that's what would happen to her body.

  56. And she talked about it a lot.

  57. And as she got older, and as she got closer to death, she asked her sons and her sons-in-law if they would promise her that if she died in the middle of winter, that they would bury her.

  58. Now, some of us are city folks, and we don't know what the ground is like in the winter, but it's frozen.

  59. You can't just dig a hole.

  60. Well, lo and behold, she did.

  61. She died in mid-January, and so even as she died and her sons paid their respects, they left that place and began the preparation and planning to see that their mom would be buried in the hole.

  62. So they knew where the grave site was, and they had the others to make sure it was marked off, and then they cleared away the snow, and they made a very large fire to cover the area.

  63. And they let it burn for a little bit, and then they took the fire away, and they scraped off a little bit of dirt, and then they made another fire, took it away, scraped off a little bit of dirt, another fire, on and on and on.

  64. A long, long day in very, very cold temperatures, standing there, taking away a tiny little inch of earth at a time, until they finally got past that which was frozen, was able to dig the rest of the hole relatively quickly, says George.

  65. She's just standing there.

  66. I mean, now.

  67. And then that next day, they buried their mom.

  68. They buried their grandmother.

  69. They buried their mother-in-law.

  70. They buried their aunt.

  71. Because it was a group of about six or seven men, and that's what they spent the whole day doing, sometimes going back to get warmed up and do all that other types of stuff.

  72. But the women would bring food for them to eat during the day so that they did it.

  73. But that's how they honored their mom.

  74. And I think that's quite a remarkable story about honoring your mother.

  75. The story which we're about to read is a story about honoring the dead.

  76. It's a story about honoring the dead that goes sideways in a very remarkable way.

  77. So if you have your Bibles, we're going to begin reading at Mark chapter 15, verse 40.

    Mark 15:40

  78. Mark chapter 15, verse 40.

    Mark 15:40

  79. And Mark, I mean, there's two ways that you could look at Mark.

  80. On one hand, you could be like a Christian and believe that it's God's word.

  81. But another way to look at it, which would be how scholars or whatever literary critics would look at it, is it's an ancient biography.

  82. It's an eyewitness biography written while eyewitnesses were alive.

  83. And here's the story that they tell.

  84. And just immediately before this, we have the account of Jesus breathing his last.

  85. And the centurion, seeing Jesus breathing his last, makes a comment about Jesus.

  86. And now here's where the story takes up at verse 40 of chapter 15.

  87. There were also women looking on from a distance.

  88. Among them were whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger, and Joses, and Salome.

  89. When Jesus was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him.

  90. And there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

  91. And I just sort of pause here.

  92. The women had been observing the crucifixion from a distance.

  93. They didn't want to be amongst the mockers, and they didn't want to be amongst the gamblers,

  94. and they didn't want to be amongst those who, in every culture, there are bloodthirsty.

  95. If we had a public crucifixion, there would be many people who would film it,

  96. because there's always people who like blood and gore.

  97. It's something they enjoy.

  98. And they didn't want to be part of that, but they see him die.

  99. They see him breathe his last.

  100. The story continues.

  101. And when evening had come, since it was the day of preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

  102. Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God,

  103. took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

  104. Now, once again, it's the body of Jesus.

  105. He's clearly dead.

  106. But just as an aside, why is it that it took courage to do this?

  107. Well, a moment's reflection will help us.

  108. Some of you know this, and some of you don't, but on the 16th of April, 2008,

  109. this congregation voted to separate from the Anglican Church of Canada

  110. and come under a different jurisdiction, still remaining Anglicans,

  111. but not at all connected to the Anglican Church of Canada.

  112. And when we did that, I, as a minister, had a lot of fears about it, anxieties.

  113. I had a peace about it, but I had anxiety, of course, because it's not unusual for people to say,

  114. yeah, we have your back, Pastor, but then when you take the step, they leave the pastor all alone.

  115. And in fact, the way my former diocese talked about it was there was just this one kooky guy named George Sinclair

  116. who wanted it, but the congregation didn't want it.

  117. And they, in fact, sent messages to the congregation assuring them that after the vote,

  118. Jesus, we would just fire George and that we'd provide another priest for all the people

  119. who wanted to stay with the Diocese of Ottawa.

  120. So that was the way that everybody in the diocese expected that it was going to happen.

  121. Maybe they'd know that there'd be two or three other weird people who would go with me,

  122. but fundamentally nobody would leave such a beautiful building

  123. and all of the resources in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa.

  124. But, of course, I became persona non grata.

  125. There were well over 100 clergy in the Diocese of Ottawa,

  126. so in the week after I left, how many of them called me up to say anything to me?

  127. I'll give you the answer.

  128. Out of the 100, 120 active clergy and retired clergy, maybe 150, 180, how many called me?

  129. One.

  130. One minister called me and offered to bring me groceries because he didn't want to see me go hungry.

  131. To the rest, I was a leper.

  132. I mean, very truly, most of the diocese would have allowed a Wiccan to speak in church, but not allow me.

  133. But we all know what it's like if you see somebody that they make a spectacular wrong move,

  134. and to associate with them is to be tainted by them.

  135. And so it took Joseph great courage.

  136. Even though Joseph, Jesus, was now dead, the threat was over, they had won.

  137. It takes great courage to want to ask for the body of Jesus.

  138. But you know what?

  139. Joseph wanted to honor the body of Jesus.

  140. Because if he hadn't have done it, what would have happened is what happened to the other thieves,

  141. which was the normal Roman custom.

  142. The bodies would be taken down and they would be thrown in a dump.

  143. And Joseph wanted to honor Jesus.

  144. And so he took this big risk.

  145. Now, Pilate's a bit confused about this.

  146. Look what happens next, verse 44.

  147. Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus should have already died.

  148. He would have seen Jesus as a strong guy, and normally people wouldn't have died so quickly,

  149. and he'd probably forgotten the Jewish custom and the fact that they would guarantee the death.

  150. He'd just forgotten why would he remember Jewish superstitions.

  151. He was a great Roman.

  152. But he's surprised.

  153. Verse 44, Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus should have already died.

  154. And summoning the centurion, sort of like a captain or a major,

  155. he asked him whether Jesus was already dead.

  156. And when he learned from the centurion that Jesus was dead,

  157. he granted the corpse to Joseph.

  158. Joseph.

  159. Now, once again, notice the text continually says dead, dead, body, corpse.

  160. It continually emphasizes the, you know, if I had been doing the scene things for this,

  161. this whole scene would have been called Jesus is dead, dead, dead, dead.

  162. That's what I would have called the scene if I was doing that with scenes.

  163. He's dead, dead, dead, dead.

  164. Now, sometimes people, when they're downstream trying to explain why the grave is empty,

  165. the tomb is empty, they'll talk about how Jesus maybe didn't die.

  166. And they'll say things like, Lazarus wasn't a doctor.

  167. Maybe he didn't really die.

  168. And that sounds very convincing.

  169. But we forget that there's two types of people who are experts in being able to make this determination.

  170. One, of course, is doctors.

  171. And we do know that, in fact, if a doctor makes a mistake and issues, says somebody's dead when they're alive,

  172. there's, I mean, lots of people will make fun of them for a long time,

  173. and there may be some questions of their judgment.

  174. But there's a whole other category of person who's expert in knowing when somebody's dead,

  175. and that's professional killers.

  176. I'm not being funny.

  177. Professional killers are experts.

  178. And the fact of the matter is, if a professional killer makes the mistake,

  179. people don't just make fun of them.

  180. Something far worse could happen to that guy,

  181. because they're paid to make sure the person's dead.

  182. And the centurions and the duty officers connected with the bearer,

  183. and they would have potentially, this same group of guys would have done dozens,

  184. scores of crucifixions,

  185. I think they estimated that when it came time a few years later,

  186. when the Jewish people started to revolt against Roman rule,

  187. they'd crucify a thousand at a time, a thousand at a time, crucified.

  188. So Jesus was dead.

  189. Verse 46,

  190. And Joseph bought a linen shroud,

  191. and he took Jesus down,

  192. and he wrapped Jesus in the linen shroud,

  193. and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock.

  194. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

  195. And Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joseph,

  196. saw where Jesus was laid.

  197. Once again, you notice the language, the tomb,

  198. the laid, the body,

  199. this continuing hammering away at this continuing thing,

  200. which, as I said, if I had done the Netflix things,

  201. it would have been called,

  202. Jesus is dead, dead, dead, dead, dead,

  203. like he's dead.

  204. Now, here's the thing which is going on in the text.

  205. If you could put up my first point, Claire,

  206. that would be very helpful.

  207. On Friday afternoon,

  208. April the 3rd,

  209. 33 AD,

  210. Jesus died.

  211. On Friday afternoon,

  212. April the 3rd,

  213. 33 AD,

  214. Jesus died.

  215. I was talking to somebody the other day

  216. who's sort of friendly towards Christianity.

  217. I'm not sure where they are with their Christian faith,

  218. but they're friendly to them,

  219. and we were talking a little bit about it.

  220. And he assumed,

  221. he was actually completely floored

  222. that, first of all,

  223. the things like the Gospel of Mark

  224. go back to being eyewitness accounts.

  225. He had never dawned on him

  226. that there are ancient Christian letters

  227. that talk about the death and resurrection of Jesus

  228. that go way back.

  229. The first letter,

  230. Christian letter,

  231. which we have,

  232. which is an undisputed letter

  233. from that time period,

  234. is from 15 years after this,

  235. 15 or 16 years after this.

  236. And he was floored

  237. that they actually know the date that Jesus died.

  238. And the scholars debate

  239. whether it was the 7th of April,

  240. 30 AD,

  241. or the 3rd of April,

  242. 33 AD.

  243. But there's enough historical references

  244. in these ancient biographies

  245. connected to Roman emperors

  246. and other historical characters

  247. that they can sort of figure out

  248. that there's only two possible dates

  249. while Pontius Pilate was in that area

  250. where you had the combination

  251. by solar calendar of a Friday,

  252. you know,

  253. the Thursday,

  254. Friday,

  255. Saturday,

  256. when the Passover

  257. and the Sabbath would happen.

  258. And I think the evidence is best

  259. for it being April 3rd,

  260. 33 AD.

  261. But the point is

  262. that what's being recorded here

  263. is history.

  264. That's why I can say,

  265. you could say,

  266. on Friday afternoon,

  267. April the 3rd,

  268. 33 AD,

  269. Jesus died.

  270. Now,

  271. the next part of the story,

  272. you know,

  273. this is part of the thing about,

  274. and why you might like

  275. want to have a little journal like this

  276. to reflect upon the text.

  277. The next part is deeply human.

  278. At least it's human in my experience.

  279. Maybe it's not yours.

  280. But,

  281. you know,

  282. every one of us

  283. probably knows people,

  284. and hopefully we aren't that person,

  285. who sort of says,

  286. yeah,

  287. yeah,

  288. yeah,

  289. yeah,

  290. you know,

  291. the family members

  292. or my friends,

  293. they can sort of do those arrangements,

  294. but,

  295. you know,

  296. at the end of the day,

  297. they don't really get it quite right.

  298. They need somebody like me there

  299. just to make things better,

  300. just to make them really proper.

  301. They do their best.

  302. They mean well.

  303. But really,

  304. unless I sort of come and,

  305. you know,

  306. fix up whatever,

  307. it's not quite done well.

  308. And that's what's going on here.

  309. Look how it goes.

  310. It's chapter 16,

  311. verse 1.

  312. When the Sabbath was passed,

  313. Mary Magdalene,

  314. Mary the mother of James,

  315. and Salome,

  316. bought spices

  317. so that they might go

  318. and anoint Jesus.

  319. Now,

  320. what's going on here?

  321. Actually,

  322. if you could put up the point,

  323. that would be very helpful.

  324. On Saturday evening,

  325. April the 4th,

  326. 33 AD,

  327. some women bought spices

  328. to cover the stench

  329. of Jesus'

  330. decomposing body.

  331. That's what's being communicated here.

  332. On the evening,

  333. Saturday evening,

  334. April the 4th,

  335. 33 AD,

  336. some women bought spices

  337. to cover the stench

  338. of Jesus'

  339. decomposing body.

  340. You see,

  341. Jewish people didn't embalm.

  342. And so what they did

  343. is they would put spices

  344. on the body,

  345. if they could afford it,

  346. to help cover up

  347. the stench

  348. of decomposition.

  349. And so what would have happened,

  350. it's not mentioned

  351. in Joseph's case,

  352. is that Joseph,

  353. in another account,

  354. knows that he had

  355. at least one person

  356. helping him

  357. and maybe servants.

  358. And when they had

  359. the linen shroud,

  360. they would have put

  361. the spices down

  362. on the shroud.

  363. They would have

  364. put some spices

  365. on the part of Jesus

  366. that was probably,

  367. you know,

  368. he's probably on his back

  369. facing up.

  370. And then they wrapped

  371. it all up.

  372. And the women probably thought,

  373. well, you know,

  374. those guys,

  375. they're guys.

  376. They meant well.

  377. But, you know,

  378. I bet they didn't get

  379. enough spices

  380. and I bet it's not

  381. tucked in right

  382. and I bet it's just

  383. not done right.

  384. You know people like that?

  385. That's what they were thinking.

  386. And so,

  387. so they went

  388. and bought extra spices

  389. and they weren't

  390. buying spices

  391. to make cookies

  392. to celebrate

  393. the resurrection

  394. of Jesus.

  395. They were buying spices

  396. to put on the

  397. decomposing body

  398. of Jesus

  399. so it wouldn't smell.

  400. That's what they were doing.

  401. That's what they were doing.

  402. And they were doing it

  403. at night

  404. after the Sabbath is over,

  405. the stalls

  406. and the business is open

  407. and they felt comfortable

  408. doing that.

  409. And those of you

  410. who are women,

  411. know what this is like,

  412. you feel comfortable

  413. doing that

  414. because there's lots

  415. of people around

  416. and you feel safe

  417. but the idea of walking

  418. way out to a tomb

  419. in the middle of the night

  420. all by yourself,

  421. just a couple of women

  422. and it's going to be dark

  423. and you can't really do it,

  424. well that's a very,

  425. very different proposition.

  426. So they go home,

  427. they go to bed

  428. and the next morning

  429. they wake up

  430. and here's what they do.

  431. It's verse 2

  432. and 3.

  433. And very early

  434. on the first day

  435. of the week

  436. when the sun had risen,

  437. they went to the tomb

  438. and they were,

  439. notice again the death,

  440. right?

  441. And they were saying

  442. to one another,

  443. who will roll away

  444. the stone for us

  445. from the entrance

  446. of the tomb?

  447. Now if you could just

  448. put up my next point

  449. that would be handy.

  450. With the first faint

  451. light of dawn,

  452. April 5th,

  453. 33 AD,

  454. some women left

  455. for the tomb of Jesus

  456. to put additional spices

  457. on his body

  458. to cover up the stench

  459. of decomposition.

  460. They went to honour him.

  461. They went to honour him.

  462. I mean for us

  463. it sounds pretty gross

  464. that you'd want to

  465. unwrap the body

  466. and touch the body

  467. after it had been dead

  468. for that many hours

  469. and that sounds

  470. very gross to us,

  471. some of us more than others.

  472. But for others of us

  473. you understand

  474. that great desire

  475. to have that one time

  476. to make sure

  477. that you can,

  478. they didn't have time

  479. on Friday

  480. to really see him dead

  481. and just to be with him,

  482. to be with his body.

  483. They didn't have that time

  484. because there's soldiers around

  485. and people screaming

  486. and yelling

  487. and the hustle and bustle

  488. and then it's taken away

  489. and all they can do

  490. is look at a distance.

  491. They don't have that time

  492. and they want that time.

  493. They love Jesus.

  494. They're deeply sad

  495. that he's dead.

  496. And yes, it's gross.

  497. They would have been familiar

  498. with those type of grossnesses

  499. back then

  500. because you can't just,

  501. it was harder

  502. just to pay a professional

  503. to go and do it

  504. and you don't have to be bothered

  505. and they wanted

  506. to unwrap his body.

  507. They wanted to put

  508. the spices down.

  509. They wanted to wrap him back up.

  510. They wanted to make sure

  511. it was done well

  512. and they wanted

  513. a quiet time alone

  514. with him in the tomb.

  515. It's deeply human.

  516. It's deeply human.

  517. And the text doesn't tell us.

  518. It might have even been

  519. that some others

  520. who couldn't handle

  521. the gross aspect

  522. were planning to come

  523. and do their respects later

  524. as well,

  525. privately, quietly,

  526. just to see him.

  527. See, all of these

  528. are stories

  529. of people who love Jesus

  530. who wanted to honor him

  531. in his death.

  532. And then

  533. the story takes

  534. a weird turn.

  535. And by now,

  536. I hope you've gathered

  537. that what they're making

  538. is a claim

  539. that it goes

  540. really, really, really weird

  541. and completely

  542. and utterly

  543. against what they had expected

  544. and what they were preparing for

  545. and how they were preparing

  546. to live for the rest

  547. of their lives.

  548. Look what happens.

  549. Look at verses

  550. four to seven.

  551. And looking up,

  552. they must have been coming

  553. from the bottom

  554. and the cave

  555. slash tomb

  556. has been cut in the side.

  557. And looking up,

  558. they saw that the stone

  559. had been rolled back

  560. and it was very large.

  561. And entering the tomb,

  562. they saw a young man

  563. sitting on the right side

  564. dressed in a white robe

  565. and they were alarmed.

  566. And just sort of pause here

  567. before I read any further.

  568. It's clear from the original language

  569. and it's clear from the other accounts

  570. that this is a way

  571. of describing an angel.

  572. They're seeing an angel.

  573. Verse six,

  574. And he said to them,

  575. Do not be alarmed.

  576. You seek Jesus of Nazareth

  577. who was crucified.

  578. He is risen.

  579. He is not here.

  580. See the place

  581. where they laid him.

  582. But go,

  583. tell his disciples

  584. and Peter

  585. that he is going before you

  586. to Galilee.

  587. There you will see him

  588. just as he told you.

  589. If you could put up the point.

  590. On the morning of April 5th,

  591. 33 AD,

  592. some women found

  593. the stone rolled away

  594. from Jesus' tomb

  595. and his body was gone.

  596. Now up until now,

  597. you could go to the religion faculty

  598. at Ottawa U.

  599. You could go to the ultra-liberal

  600. religion faculty

  601. at St. Paul University.

  602. You could go to the religion faculty

  603. at Carleton.

  604. You could go to just about

  605. any school.

  606. And they would not disagree

  607. with a single thing

  608. of my points

  609. that I've set up until now.

  610. They might,

  611. you know,

  612. my explanation,

  613. they might have different nuances.

  614. That's fine.

  615. But the four points

  616. that I've put up right now,

  617. that would be just,

  618. that's part of the bedrock thing

  619. that nobody would disagree with.

  620. Some of them might disagree

  621. with 33 and 30,

  622. but,

  623. you know,

  624. at the end of the day,

  625. all of this stuff,

  626. I've completely and utterly,

  627. they all agree.

  628. But in that text,

  629. in particular,

  630. in verse 5 and 6,

  631. this is where they lose it.

  632. Okay, George,

  633. you're saying an angel

  634. talked to the women.

  635. Like, seriously?

  636. An angel talked to the women?

  637. George,

  638. and you say it's history?

  639. You say it's biography?

  640. And you have an angel talking?

  641. George,

  642. that's completely

  643. and utterly ridiculous.

  644. Now,

  645. they might say it

  646. with more scorn

  647. and not affection.

  648. And we might get deeply red

  649. in the face

  650. and uncomfortable

  651. and not know what to say.

  652. And I'm not going to give you

  653. a whole account

  654. of what they,

  655. of what to say.

  656. But I am,

  657. if you could put up

  658. the fifth point,

  659. I am going to maintain

  660. that this sentence

  661. makes complete sense

  662. as an historical account

  663. of what actually happened.

  664. Amongst other things,

  665. because I'm not going into it,

  666. the person who is,

  667. well, no,

  668. I'll make the point first.

  669. On the morning of April 5th,

  670. 33 AD,

  671. an angel told the women

  672. that Jesus had been resurrected

  673. from death,

  674. from the dead.

  675. Now,

  676. angels,

  677. you know,

  678. that's completely impossible.

  679. It's completely implausible.

  680. Well,

  681. amongst other things,

  682. that only makes sense,

  683. of course,

  684. if angels don't actually exist.

  685. If they do exist,

  686. then there's nothing wrong

  687. with this.

  688. Now,

  689. here's what,

  690. here's what's going on,

  691. you know,

  692. and that's why,

  693. by the way,

  694. this is one of the reasons

  695. I've made all of my points

  696. by giving the actual date

  697. of the resurrection

  698. and the claim

  699. that's being made.

  700. That you can't read

  701. the Gospels

  702. and not realize,

  703. you know,

  704. if you want to think,

  705. if you think

  706. that they may be

  707. trying to just be symbolic,

  708. well,

  709. the Bible has

  710. an account

  711. of Christian truth

  712. which is symbolic.

  713. It's called

  714. the Book of Revelation

  715. and nobody can read

  716. the Book of Revelation

  717. and read one of the Gospels

  718. and think that

  719. they're the same genres.

  720. Like,

  721. early Christians,

  722. just,

  723. they weren't dummies.

  724. They're writing

  725. an ancient biography

  726. and they're making

  727. these claims.

  728. They're claiming

  729. that that's what happened.

  730. Now,

  731. here's the issue

  732. with it

  733. and this is why

  734. on one level,

  735. and I think increasingly

  736. in our culture

  737. there's maybe

  738. going to begin

  739. a new openness to it

  740. and I want to park here

  741. just for a couple of minutes.

  742. I see the time.

  743. I want to park here.

  744. I have,

  745. I know somebody who,

  746. I know several people now

  747. who might have been

  748. a bit far

  749. from the Christian faith

  750. for a while

  751. and I don't know

  752. if they're definitely,

  753. at least a couple of them

  754. that I'm thinking of,

  755. they're definitely

  756. not Christians

  757. but they have a respect

  758. for Christians

  759. that they didn't have before

  760. and that's because

  761. on a very fundamental level

  762. they're starting to realize

  763. and recognize

  764. something which has

  765. always been true

  766. that Christian truth,

  767. the Christian faith

  768. has been a bastion,

  769. has been a bastion

  770. of truth

  771. and of evidence

  772. and of reason

  773. and of what is real.

  774. like I talk to people

  775. and once they start

  776. to realize

  777. what I think about things

  778. they come to realize

  779. that there's people

  780. in our,

  781. like there's actually

  782. people in our

  783. educational institution

  784. that think that

  785. two plus two

  786. equals four

  787. isn't a statement

  788. of something which is true

  789. but is a patriarchal construct.

  790. That there are people

  791. in our culture

  792. who think that

  793. you should have

  794. different ways

  795. of knowing

  796. taught alongside science

  797. because they're both

  798. equally valid

  799. that something

  800. that you get

  801. from a dream

  802. or a legend

  803. is going to be

  804. equally as good

  805. at treating people

  806. or handling things

  807. as evidence-based,

  808. scientific-based medicine

  809. and that's just

  810. completely ridiculous.

  811. And the next bit,

  812. this isn't a political rant

  813. and I know normally

  814. I try to make

  815. a whole pile of covering

  816. for it

  817. and I don't want

  818. to offend

  819. and I'm going to offend

  820. and I'll take you

  821. out for coffee

  822. and I'll give you

  823. lots of nuances

  824. around it

  825. but I know people

  826. who sit through

  827. and these are people

  828. who are scientists

  829. with graduate level

  830. degrees in biology

  831. and they sit through

  832. a workshop

  833. where they say

  834. that you can't refer

  835. to women breastfeeding,

  836. you have to refer

  837. what's the word

  838. to milking agents

  839. like, you know,

  840. chest feeding?

  841. And they sit

  842. through things

  843. where, you know,

  844. you might have seen

  845. an viral clip

  846. that you couldn't tell

  847. in an autopsy

  848. whether the corpse

  849. was a male or female

  850. and they go,

  851. like, what?

  852. And I know several people

  853. who, you know,

  854. ten years earlier

  855. or five years earlier

  856. they would have been

  857. very dismissive

  858. of Christians

  859. but all of a sudden

  860. they just look at Christians

  861. and they realize

  862. that Christians

  863. have had this long tradition

  864. deeply formed

  865. that we're concerned

  866. with evidence,

  867. that we're concerned

  868. with the truth,

  869. that we're concerned

  870. with reason

  871. and they see our culture

  872. getting unmoored

  873. and all of a sudden

  874. they realize

  875. that if they're going

  876. to go and have some people

  877. they can at least

  878. have conversations with

  879. and maybe have,

  880. start to realize

  881. that there's something

  882. grounding,

  883. just actually what's real,

  884. that that's where you go,

  885. that's where Christians

  886. inhabit.

  887. and for some of them

  888. it's a very shocking

  889. realization

  890. that that's sort of

  891. that they're on the same

  892. side of the playing field

  893. with guys like me

  894. and you folks.

  895. You see,

  896. I mean,

  897. you just look at this story.

  898. Christians say

  899. that they didn't roll

  900. the stone away

  901. so Jesus could get out.

  902. They rolled the stone away

  903. so that people could go in

  904. and verify

  905. that the body was gone.

  906. Kathy Keller

  907. has a wonderful line.

  908. She says,

  909. it's always been part

  910. of the Christian tradition

  911. to trust and verify.

  912. Trust and verify.

  913. That that's part

  914. of the Christian tradition.

  915. Even the angel says,

  916. look,

  917. the body's gone.

  918. Christianity would be

  919. a radically,

  920. radically,

  921. radically different religion.

  922. In fact,

  923. it would be like

  924. the religions

  925. of most of the world

  926. if we were to say,

  927. yeah,

  928. Jesus rose from the dead.

  929. Oh,

  930. did he rise from the dead?

  931. How do you know?

  932. Well,

  933. you know,

  934. we know that the body's gone.

  935. Can I go?

  936. No,

  937. no,

  938. you know,

  939. it happened right here

  940. in this tomb.

  941. Well,

  942. can we go and look?

  943. No,

  944. no,

  945. no,

  946. no,

  947. no,

  948. no,

  949. no,

  950. no,

  951. no,

  952. no,

  953. no,

  954. no,

  955. no,

  956. no,

  957. no,

  958. no,

  959. no,

  960. no,

  961. no,

  962. no,

  963. no,

  964. no,

  965. no,

  966. no,

  967. no,

  968. no,

  969. no,

  970. no,

  971. no,

  972. no,

  973. no,

  974. no,

  975. no,

  976. you know,

  977. maybe it's ancient myths

  978. and ancient stories

  979. and I'm not,

  980. I'm not putting them down at all

  981. and ancient practices,

  982. you have stories,

  983. you have myths,

  984. you have practices,

  985. you have legends,

  986. you have,

  987. you know,

  988. poetry,

  989. you have all of these types of things

  990. and the person who follows them

  991. has to follow those things.

  992. You follow the myths

  993. and you meditate upon the myths

  994. and you make them your own

  995. and you do the practices

  996. and that makes you acceptable to God.

  997. But at the very,

  998. very heart of the Christian faith

  999. and this is something

  1000. that Protestant and Catholics

  1001. and Eastern Orthodox

  1002. we all agree on.

1003. At the very heart of the Christian faith

  1004. is,

  1005. I mean,

1006. it's obviously important to us

  1007. what Jesus taught

1008. and it's important to us

1009. that we do what Jesus told us to do

1010. but at the very heart of it

1011. is that God in his son

  1012. does something in history,

  1013. that he accomplishes something.

1014. That's the heart of the Christian faith.

  1015. That on April 5th, 33 AD,

  1016. the tomb was empty

  1017. because Jesus rose.

1018. That's the heart of the Christian faith.

1019. It's the heart of the Christian faith

1020. that I'm not made right with God

  1021. because I'm really good

  1022. at keeping the teachings.

1023. You're not made right with God

1024. because you suck at keeping the teachings

  1025. and you suck

1026. and I'm way better at it

1027. and so I'm acceptable to God.

  1028. No,

1029. that's not what the Christian faith is.

1030. The Christian faith is that

  1031. I'm an unworthy person

1032. and Jesus did something for me

1033. that I cannot do for myself

1034. and I receive it by grace

1035. and so right in the very, very center

  1036. of Christianity

  1037. is a concern

1038. not just with stories and myths

  1039. and allegories and symbolism

  1040. and metaphors

1041. but of something actually happening

  1042. in the real world

1043. which is why Christianity has miracles

  1044. and the others don't.

1045. It's all about what happens

  1046. in the real world

1047. and it's a very different way of living

1048. but at the same time

1049. and this is what makes

  1050. Christianity so weird

1051. to people on the outside.

  1052. I had a fellow,

  1053. maybe he's watching this

  1054. today or downstream

  1055. and he's an engineer.

1056. He was from a communist country,

  1057. raised an atheist.

1058. He fled the Iron Curtain,

  1059. came to the West

1060. and I've had quite a few conversations

  1061. with him

1062. and I got him all wrong

1063. for the first three or four months.

1064. I just assumed he was an atheist

1065. and it finally dawned on me

1066. that by his own thinking

  1067. he had rejected atheism

  1068. and come to believe

1069. that there were beings like angels.

  1070. And you see,

  1071. the other thing

1072. which is just so weird

  1073. about Christianity

1074. is we have this concern

  1075. for truth,

  1076. for evidence,

  1077. for reason,

  1078. for thinking,

  1079. for being careful,

  1080. for being clear

1081. but at the other hand,

  1082. we believe there's a soul,

  1083. we believe there's angels,

  1084. we believe there's meaning,

  1085. we believe there's beauty,

  1086. we believe there's goodness,

1087. we believe there's right and wrong,

  1088. we believe that there's

  1089. these transcendent truths,

  1090. we believe that

  1091. because the creator God,

  1092. the triune God

  1093. has created all things,

1094. that different things in creation

  1095. just aren't mere things

  1096. or mere stuff

1097. or mere collections of atoms

  1098. but that they communicate

  1099. in some ways,

1100. that they point to things,

1101. that they're metaphors of things,

1102. that the body has a type

1103. of a significance to it

1104. and you can't discover that

  1105. from science,

  1106. from cutting it up

  1107. and dissecting it,

1108. that there's this whole world

  1109. of meaning,

  1110. of beauty,

  1111. of goodness,

  1112. of dance,

  1113. of poetry,

  1114. of laughter

  1115. and Christianity

1116. is not just the bastion of truth,

1117. it's also the bastion of that

1118. which believes that there is more

1119. and the two are held together

  1120. with no contradiction whatsoever,

1121. hence if that statement is up there,

  1122. why that statement makes

1123. all the sense in the world

  1124. that on the morning

  1125. that April 5th, 33 AD,

1126. an angel told the woman

1127. that Jesus had been resurrected

  1128. from the dead

  1129. and no Christian

1130. has to blush at that

  1131. and we say,

1132. yeah, that's exactly what it is.

1133. Don't you believe in minds

  1134. and souls

  1135. and beauty

  1136. and goodness

  1137. and love

  1138. and truth

  1139. and justice?

  1140. Don't you believe

  1141. there's something more

1142. than what you can just consume

  1143. or push around?

  1144. Don't you believe

  1145. there's something more?

  1146. And don't you believe

  1147. that in a,

  1148. don't you wish

  1149. there was a world

  1150. where there's both

  1151. something more

  1152. and something that,

1153. and you can think about it

  1154. and there's no contradiction?

  1155. There's a coherence

  1156. and doesn't that sound

  1157. beautiful and attractive?

  1158. And if you think

  1159. that's beautiful and attractive

1160. then what you are being attracted to

  1161. is only Christianity

  1162. and nothing else.

  1163. If you were,

1164. wish that there was a world

1165. where you could do science

  1166. and do art,

  1167. where you could

  1168. analyze things

  1169. very carefully

  1170. and think really hardly

1171. and at the same time

  1172. recognize beauty

  1173. and awe

  1174. and mystery

  1175. and you wish

  1176. there was a way

1177. that both of those things

  1178. could coexist

  1179. in one,

  1180. perhaps one way,

  1181. what you are wishing

  1182. for is that Christianity

  1183. was true,

  1184. is true.

1185. And I want to tell you,

  1186. friends,

1187. I want to tell you,

  1188. brothers and sisters,

  1189. it's true.

  1190. Go listen to some

  1191. of Mike Lacona's tapes

  1192. and many others.

  1193. There is no better

  1194. explanation

  1195. for the historical facts

  1196. around the death

  1197. of Jesus

  1198. than that he is

  1199. resurrected from the dead.

  1200. There is no better

  1201. rational,

  1202. reasonable explanation

  1203. for the facts

  1204. than what that angel

  1205. just said.

  1206. Amen.

  1207. Amen.

  1208. Amen.

1209. I have to wrap things up.

  1210. My voice is going.

  1211. April showers

  1212. bring May flowers

1213. and they also bring allergies.

  1214. Could you put up

  1215. the next point

  1216. just briefly?

  1217. Excuse me.

  1218. On Friday afternoon,

  1219. April 3rd, 33 AD,

  1220. death appeared

  1221. to swallow Jesus.

1222. I just say it appeared

1223. not because he didn't die,

  1224. but it appeared

  1225. that death

  1226. had swallowed Jesus

  1227. and death had won.

  1228. On Sunday,

  1229. April 5th, 33 AD,

  1230. people began to learn

  1231. that Jesus

  1232. had swallowed death.

  1233. This tiny little man

  1234. probably wasn't much taller

  1235. than five foot tall,

  1236. scrawny

1237. and not very good looking.

  1238. scrawny

  1239. because he was

  1240. lower working class,

  1241. not good looking

  1242. because that's what

  1243. the Bible tells us.

1244. He died on the cross

  1245. amidst blood

  1246. and gore

  1247. and jeers

  1248. on Friday,

  1249. April 3rd,

  1250. and on Sunday,

  1251. April 5th.

  1252. We began to learn

  1253. that he

  1254. had swallowed death.

  1255. Now,

  1256. I'm going to go

  1257. through these things

  1258. a little bit quick.

  1259. You know,

  1260. for Christians,

  1261. this is why

  1262. for Christians,

  1263. the grave

1264. is a bed of hope

  1265. for those in Christ.

  1266. the sweetest lie

  1267. that Canadians

  1268. tell themselves

  1269. is that they

  1270. will never die.

  1271. And the second

  1272. sweetest lie

  1273. that Canadians

  1274. tell themselves

  1275. is that even

  1276. if they die,

1277. it will all work out.

  1278. We know

  1279. from the teachings

  1280. of Jesus

  1281. that those things

  1282. are not true.

  1283. Of course,

  1284. it's just biologically

  1285. the case that we're

  1286. all going to die.

  1287. And for many people,

  1288. as their death becomes,

  1289. their upcoming death

  1290. becomes a reality,

  1291. they face terror.

  1292. But for Christians,

  1293. for those who are

  1294. in Christ,

  1295. in his finished work,

  1296. in his arms,

  1297. where he has come

  1298. into them

  1299. to be their savior,

1300. and they are in him,

  1301. the grave becomes

  1302. a bed of hope.

  1303. If Jesus tarries,

1304. there will be a time

  1305. when my eyes close,

  1306. and I don't know

  1307. what I will see

  1308. as my eyes close.

  1309. Maybe I will be

  1310. in a coma.

  1311. Maybe I'll see

  1312. the ceiling.

  1313. Maybe I'll see

  1314. the loved ones

  1315. around me,

  1316. and my eyes

  1317. will close.

  1318. And the moment

  1319. my eyes close

  1320. on my loved ones,

  1321. my eyes open

  1322. in glory.

  1323. And that is

  1324. the Christian hope.

  1325. hope.

1326. That is the Christian hope.

  1327. Why did they go

  1328. without fear?

  1329. Why did they go

  1330. with fear?

  1331. Look at,

1332. if you could put up

  1333. verse 8,

  1334. and they went out

1335. and fled from the tomb

  1336. for trembling

  1337. and astonishment

  1338. had seized them,

  1339. and they said nothing

  1340. to anyone,

  1341. for they were afraid.

  1342. I put this,

1343. I had not talked about this

  1344. all the way through

  1345. Mark's gospel.

  1346. If you go,

  1347. I'm going to make

  1348. this little point.

  1349. If you go back

  1350. and you read

  1351. Mark's gospel

  1352. on your own,

  1353. one of the things

  1354. you're going to find

  1355. is his disciples

  1356. kept getting it wrong.

  1357. They kept not doing

1358. what he wanted them to do.

1359. They kept getting it wrong,

  1360. like all the time,

  1361. like his mom thinks

  1362. he's insane.

1363. I'm not making that up.

  1364. Like his sisters

  1365. and brothers

  1366. think Jesus is insane.

  1367. Like, you know,

  1368. just after Jesus says

  1369. he's going to die

  1370. on the cross,

  1371. the disciples get

  1372. in an argument

  1373. about who's going

1374. to sit at Jesus' throne

1375. when he rules the world.

  1376. Like they keep

  1377. getting it wrong.

  1378. And so the gospel

  1379. of Mark ends

1380. in the most brilliant way.

  1381. How do I believe

  1382. that Jesus died?

  1383. I couldn't go see

  1384. the empty tomb.

  1385. I believe it

  1386. because the tomb

  1387. is empty,

  1388. and I've been told

  1389. that Jesus rose

  1390. from the dead.

1391. That's how all of us believe.

  1392. And the question ends

1393. in a bit of an ironic

  1394. type of way,

1395. like an odd type of way,

  1396. because it's a challenge

  1397. to you and me.

1398. Am I going to be

  1399. like the woman

  1400. and be afraid?

  1401. Like, I'll be honest,

1402. when I made that comment

  1403. about chest feeding units,

  1404. I wondered whether

  1405. I should say something

  1406. like that in Canada

  1407. in 2022.

  1408. And you all know.

  1409. You all know

  1410. that that's the case.

1411. Because we can be afraid

1412. to speak and bear witness

  1413. to the truth.

  1414. And the text

  1415. is calling you,

  1416. it's calling me,

  1417. to listen to what

  1418. the angel said,

  1419. to listen to what

  1420. Jesus promised,

1421. to trust that it's true,

1422. and to not live out

  1423. of fear.

1424. Not be like those women

  1425. who obviously changed

  1426. their mind later on,

  1427. and, you know,

1428. there's all that other stuff,

1429. but not to be like that.

1430. To walk with a confidence

1431. not based in my flesh,

1432. not based on my accomplishment,

  1433. but based on Christ,

1434. to not live in fear.

  1435. Jesus doesn't want us

  1436. to live in fear.

  1437. He doesn't want us

  1438. to live by fear,

1439. live by fear of death,

  1440. live by lies,

  1441. live by injustice,

  1442. live by hatred.

1443. He wants us to live

  1444. by the truth.

1445. He wants us to live

  1446. by goodness.

1447. He wants us to live

  1448. by beauty.

1449. He wants us to live

  1450. by justice.

  1451. He doesn't want us

  1452. to live by fear.

1453. That's what he wants us,

1454. that's how he wants us

  1455. to live,

  1456. brothers and sisters.

1457. so the last two points very briefly if you put up number seven Jesus confers grace

1458. triune God-given life-giving grace to the unworthy his grace to the unworthy disciples his grace to

1459. the unworthy Peter the grace to the unworthy women his grace to unworthy George his ungrace

1460. his grace to unworthy Adam I mean Andrew his grace to the unworthy Joe his grace to unworthy

1461. Ken and unworthy Uzo and and and Amy and Deborah and and Diane and Louise grace to the unworthy

1462. George proclaimed and then the final point your only hope my only hope in life and death

1463. is the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ that is my hope in life and death

1464. that is the only hope and he wants us to live as people of hope and we are people of hope when

1465. the life and death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ become the story that we live by when

1466. we are in him because we trust him as our Christ our savior our Lord and that is a life of hope your

1467. only hope in life and death is the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ invite you

1468. to stand please stand let's bow our heads in prayer

1469. father you know how frail we are you know how many fears we have and you know better than even we do

1470. how unworthy we are time and time and time again so father we thank you for grace we thank you for the

1471. grace that comes to us through Jesus we thank you for what he did for us on the cross we thank you for

1472. his defeat of death we thank you that he made sure that people understood that not only was the body

1473. gone but that it was gone because he was alive we give you thanks and praise that even now he is in

1474. heaven and that he intercedes for us that when he's he walks with us and intercedes for us that he is

1475. with us that he still is Emmanuel God with us and that one day he will come visibly powerfully in glory

1476. to bring this created world to its end to to knit together that which should be knit and and and to

1477. put to death that which should be put to death and to bring in the new heaven and the new earth and that

1478. he has died and risen from the dead to fit us for heaven father we thank you for what Christ has done

1479. we thank you for what he will continue to do in our lives and we ask Lord that you help the gospel

1480. to be real to our hearts so that we will not live by fear but that we will live by hope and we ask this

1481. in the name of Jesus your son and our savior and all God's people said amen

  1482. Amen

  1483. Amen

  1484. Amen

  1485. Amen

  1486. Amen

  1487. Amen
