  1. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

  2. Father, you, you know, sometimes, Father, we can forget that we're saved by grace alone,

  3. through faith alone, and Christ alone, and sometimes we can think it's just about rules

  4. and doing this and doing that, and we can just forget, we can forget, Father, that your

  5. Son has died for us, that he loves us, that you love us, that you want us to pour out

  6. our hearts to you, that it's about having a relationship with you that changes you, and

  7. I mean, not changes you, changes us and brings you glory, and so, Father, we ask that your

  8. Holy Spirit would give us a fresh appreciation for the intimate relationship you desire to

  9. have with us, and the intimate relationship you desire your churches, our church, to have

  10. with you, and so we ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would do this gentle but deep work

  11. in our hearts that we might grow in these things, and we ask this in the name of Jesus,

  12. your Son and our Savior.

  13. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. So, four or five years ago, some of you have heard this story before, four or five years

  16. ago, I think Louise's, my wife's birthday is in early January, and four or five years ago,

  17. I think her birthday fell on a Tuesday night, so we have a tradition that we want to try

  18. to have as much of the family to come around to help celebrate, you know, honour the person

  19. whose birthday it is, and celebrate that, and, you know, give gifts, and so because Louise's

  20. actual birthday was on, I think it was a Tuesday night, we had the family thing on the weekend,

  21. but it comes to Tuesday night, and it sort of feels funny to do nothing at all on her

  22. actual birthday, like that just sort of feels like a bit wrong.

  23. So we decided that the two who still lived at home with us, and Louise and I, we'd go

  24. out for supper.

  25. So, you know, we get all ready, pick a restaurant, and we go to the restaurant, and I'm going to

  26. get some of these details probably wrong, but you're going to get the gist of it.

  27. We go to the restaurant that we've chosen, and the restaurant we've chosen isn't open,

  28. because the staff is having their Christmas party that night.

  29. And I think we try another restaurant, and there's something similar going on.

  30. Then we're having a quick discussion about where we want to go, and Louise has a very

  31. clear idea about where she'd like us to go, but I know better not.

  32. Now, the place that Louise wanted to go was inexpensive, and I wanted to spend more money

  33. than that.

  34. Now, listen, one of the things I need you to understand, I am not trying to justify myself.

  35. What I did was wrong.

  36. Like, what I did was wrong.

  37. I didn't listen to my wife.

  38. And you can listen to the different ways that I was wrong, but I don't want it to sound

  39. as if I'm trying to justify myself.

  40. I'm not justifying myself.

  41. And then we had a miserable evening, and we had a miserable evening because of me, and

  42. I wouldn't listen to my wife.

  43. Now, this story helps us to understand what's going on in this scripture text, which to us,

  44. when we just read it, looks very perplexing and very hard to appreciate and very hard to

  45. understand.

  46. So it would be a great help to me if you would get your Bibles out and turn with me to Ezra

    Ezra 3:1

  47. chapter 3, verse 1.

  48. And I mean, we will always have the words on the screen, but there is something about having

  49. a Bible of your own and being able to look around, look at the verses before and after,

  50. and it just helped to make the story more your own if you, in fact, can look at it yourself.

  51. And those of you who have tried to read the book of Ezra understand what I mean by saying

  52. this is a book which is very hard to get into.

  53. It's all weird names doing odd things and doesn't seem to relate to us.

  54. But that story I had about Louise and myself celebrating the birthday will help us at a

  55. very deep level to see why this is actually a very profound and helpful text and actually

  56. speaks about the deep yearnings of our heart.

  57. So chapter 3, verse 1, here's how it begins.

  58. So just what's happened in terms of the context of the book is in 586 BC, Nebuchadnezzar destroys,

  59. defeats Israel and Judah, destroys the city, takes the king away blinded into captivity, kills

  60. the high priest, takes almost everybody into captivity.

  61. The city is in ruins, the temple is in ruins, the holy things are gone, and looks as if

  62. almost Israel is over.

  63. But a prophet by the name of Jeremiah prophesied that 70 years from now that even though they'd

  64. been very sinful that God would bring them back.

  65. And God, one of the big themes of the book actually is how God uses pagan emperors to actually

  66. accomplish his will.

  67. The Assyrians eventually get defeated and Cyrus, the first Persian king, becomes the new emperor

  68. of a mighty empire.

  69. And some of you might not know this, but up until not that many years ago, Iran was called

  70. Persia.

  71. So imagine this is God doing something through the Ayatollah.

  72. That's how crazy this is.

  73. If all of a sudden the Ayatollah of Iran made a decision like this.

  74. That's the shocking thing about the story.

  75. So all of a sudden, Cyrus makes this decision that the Jewish people who want it can return

  76. to the ruins of their homeland.

  77. They, I mean, he might not think many want to go because who would want to leave civilization?

  78. Who would want to leave all of the economic prosperity and safety and protection of living

  79. at the center of the empire to go to these outlying area where there is just ruins and who knows

  80. what wild and outlaw type things are going on there.

  81. But he makes a decree that they can go back and he even gives money and other types of things.

  82. And that's what we see in chapter one and chapter two.

  83. And so this is taking place about five hundred and three, about three years, two to three

  84. years after Cyrus's decree.

  85. They've come back.

  86. They've got their homes at least sorted out enough so that they have a roof over their

  87. head.

  88. And our story keeps up with chapter three, verse one.

  89. And when the seventh month came and the children of Israel were in the towns, the people gathered

  90. as one man to Jerusalem.

  91. Then arose Yeshua, the son of Jostak, and with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel, the son

  92. of Shealatiel, with his kinsmen.

  93. And they built the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings on it as it is written

  94. in the law of Moses, the man of God.

  95. Now, pause.

  96. Yikes.

  97. Okay, George, this is a stretch.

  98. You're saying this story is going to be helped by understanding having a birthday meal with

  99. your wife.

  100. The law of Moses, 536 BC.

  101. And if you go further, all these burnt offerings and sacrifices, George, that is just religion.

  102. It's barbaric.

  103. It has nothing to do with us, but it does.

  104. If you could put up the first point, that would be very helpful.

  105. Here's the first point.

  106. The real Lord, who really exists, created the real world, calls the real you into a real

  107. covenant of real, unfailing love.

  108. That is the message of the Old Testament.

  109. It is the message of the New Testament.

  110. We understand, of course, that there is a new covenant, a greater covenant, the final

  111. covenant that's brought about by Jesus.

  112. We celebrate it in the Lord's Supper.

  113. We're going to celebrate the Lord's Supper at the end of the service.

  114. The real Lord, who really exists, created the real world, calls the real you into a real

  115. covenant of real, unfailing love.

  116. You might notice, I think, the real bit's important.

  117. So here's the thing which is going on.

  118. Earlier on, just before this, I prayed.

  119. And I am a very simple, I'm a simpleton when it comes to this type of stuff.

  120. And most Canadians, most Canadians, when they think of religion or spirituality, they think

  121. of it as a type of affectation.

  122. It's like a hobby.

  123. It just gives them some type of peace or inner hope.

  124. You know, and many people say, well, I personally prefer some Jack Daniels or expensive wine.

  125. That does the thing for me.

  126. But for others, you know, it's going to church.

  127. You know, that's fine if that's what it does for you.

  128. And, you know, some good whiskey does it for me.

  129. Then, you know, that's fine.

  130. It's all cool.

  131. You know, and they don't think that the story, when we read things like this, they don't think

  132. it's real.

  133. Not like a hockey game is real.

  134. And when people are talking about what happened in the hockey game, that's real.

  135. Or if somebody tells you about what happened at work, that that's real.

  136. Or that your bank statements are real.

  137. That religious stuff isn't real.

  138. It isn't real.

  139. But Christians believe it is real.

  140. When I did that prayer, I believe I am talking to a God that does exist who can hear my prayer.

  141. And that he will act in terms of what I've asked him to do.

  142. That's what I believe.

  143. I don't believe.

  144. If I just thought it was an affectation, I wouldn't take up Jack Daniels or anything like that.

  145. But I'd have nothing to do with this place.

  146. Like, I mean, this is a complete and utter waste of time.

  147. I believe there's a God who hears me.

  148. Who hears you.

  149. When you pray to him.

  150. I believe it's real.

  151. And that's what's at the heart of this story.

  152. That this story is talking about what the Jewish people were doing and how it's real.

  153. Now, why on earth does this matter?

  154. Well, here's why it matters.

  155. So, I was unbelievably shy with young women.

  156. And I desperately wanted to have a girlfriend.

  157. But I could barely talk to a real woman.

  158. I could barely talk to them.

  159. But I wanted to have a girlfriend.

  160. I remember if I thought I might bump into a girl that I liked.

  161. I'm not making this up.

  162. I would make a checklist in my mind of things to talk about.

  163. And I would try to memorize it.

  164. Because I was completely hopeless.

  165. Louise could tell you how hopeless I was.

  166. There's still times I'm pretty hopeless.

  167. But the thing about it is I would daydream about doing something with this young woman.

  168. Go out and doing something.

  169. In my daydreams, of course, the conversation flows effortlessly.

  170. Effortlessly.

  171. We have a good time.

  172. We laugh.

  173. Everybody's happy.

  174. That's the real world.

  175. I mean, that's my imaginary girlfriend.

  176. But in the real world.

  177. And in fact, if I was having an imaginary birthday party for my imaginary girlfriend,

  178. what happened to me that night wouldn't have ended up with my wife being terribly unhappy with me.

  179. My imaginary girlfriend would have loved everything I wanted to do.

  180. She would have thought I was wonderful.

  181. Everything would work out.

  182. And I would leave those daydreams feeling very pleased.

  183. But it's all imaginary.

  184. Well, because, dang it, like real people say things and have opinions and want things.

  185. And you don't necessarily figure those things out.

  186. That's what happens in the real world.

  187. So what we're seeing here in this text is actually, if God is real, okay, like, I don't want to offend you,

  188. but it's possible that your own boutique spirituality and religions is actually the equivalent,

  189. the religious equivalent, of having an imaginary girlfriend.

  190. Because, you see, if there's in fact going to be a real God that really does exist,

  191. it's going to be more like the birthday scenario, and it's in fact going to be like this.

  192. This is actually proof that they're talking about, like, the real God who actually really exists.

  193. And so, you see, in the real world, Louise communicated to me how she wanted to be honored and celebrated and enjoyed.

  194. And I needed her to communicate that.

  195. And I ignored it.

  196. Now, think about it here for a second.

  197. And if you have a birthday party for your one-year-old, like little Dahlia is having a birthday in whatever,

  198. eight, nine, ten months or whatever, you can't really ask Dahlia what she'd like for her birthday or what would be fun.

  199. I can give you a hint.

  200. A cupcake with about this much cake and that much icing will make Dahlia very happy.

  201. Put her in her little high chair and give her the cupcake with all that icing,

  202. and in a couple of minutes, the cupcake will be destroyed.

  203. There will be more cupcake and icing on the high chair, on the floor, on her face, in her hair, and all over her clothes than there is in her mouth,

  204. and she'll be really happy.

  205. They get a bit older, you have to start asking them their opinion.

  206. You still don't really, you know, it might be that the five-year-old would just like endless bowls of candy,

  207. and you'd say, well, we'll give you a candy, but you're not going to have endless bowls of them, right?

  208. So they start to communicate it.

  209. But as they get older, by the time they're old enough to be your peer, you've got to listen to them.

  210. That's the only way you know.

  211. But think about it for a second.

  212. If that's how we treat a child and that's how we treat a peer, by the time it comes to God,

  213. if God is real and he is a person, well, I don't have the vaguest idea in the world how to honor him.

  214. I don't have the vaguest idea in the world how to celebrate him or enjoy him unless he communicates it to me.

  215. I am completely, utterly dependent upon him communicating it to me.

  216. And if I screw things up because I can't even listen to Louise, I have to listen to him.

  217. And I can't second-guess him.

  218. I can't say, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you want that, but, you know, I think this is better.

  219. No, I've got to listen to him.

  220. So if you look back at the text, you'll notice, here's one of the keys to reading the whole book of Ezra.

  221. You'll notice that just before the end of verse 2 it says,

  222. as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God.

  223. And you're going to see, if you're careful, it's one of those things that you miss.

  224. But all the way through the book of Ezra, this little as it is written, as it is written, as it is written is always there.

  225. Right?

  226. But that's a sign that we're dealing with a real God.

  227. At least one who claims that this is the real God.

  228. We have to be completely and utterly dependent upon him revealing to us how it is that we honor him and celebrate him and enjoy his presence.

  229. Now, some of you might say, George, okay, that's all very good.

  230. Come on, George.

  231. How barbaric is it?

  232. You burnt animals?

  233. Burnt?

  234. Or, like, you take a cute little lamb or a cute little goat, you know, sheep, cut their throat and throw them on a fire?

  235. Like, that's just all completely and utterly barbaric.

  236. Like, what's going on here with this type of stuff?

  237. Well, let me just comment on it on a moment.

  238. But I think it'll be helpful if we look at the next few verses before I do.

  239. Let's look at verses 3 and following.

  240. It'll make it clearer.

  241. Verse 3.

  242. So, remember, they've all gathered.

  243. They want to offer burnt offerings.

  244. So, what they do is they, verse 3, they set the altar in its place.

  245. Now, here, our English translation for fear was on them because of the peoples of the lands.

  246. It's a very, very literal translation, but it actually sort of obscures the meaning.

  247. Basically, they were afraid of the people around them.

  248. And that's going to become an increasing theme, and I'm going to talk about it more in a couple of minutes.

  249. But they were afraid.

  250. And in some ways, it sort of implies that their fear drove them even closer to God.

  251. I mean, we can be afraid of people in our culture,

  252. and the temptation is that when we're afraid of people that it'll silence us,

  253. but it drove them to God.

  254. At least it did right then.

  255. And I'll continue reading.

  256. And they offered burnt offerings on the altar to the Lord,

  257. burnt offerings morning and evening.

  258. Now, here we go through this, all this weird stuff, and I'll explain it in a moment.

  259. And they kept the Feast of Booths, or Tabernacles, as it is written.

  260. Remember, I said that's all the way through.

  261. And offered the daily burnt offerings by number according to the rule,

  262. another version of as it is written.

  263. As each day required, as it is written.

  264. And after that, the regular burnt offerings, the offerings at the new moon,

  265. and all the appointed feasts of the Lord,

  266. and the offerings of everyone who made a free will offering to the Lord.

  267. From the first day of the seventh month,

  268. they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord,

  269. but the foundation of the temple of the Lord was not yet laid.

  270. Okay, so what's going on with this?

  271. Well, there's several things which are going on here which are important.

  272. The first one is, you don't have to have it up on there.

  273. Just remember that the key to understanding this text is that the real Lord,

  274. who really exists, created the real world,

  275. calls the real you into a real covenant of real and failing love.

  276. That's what's going on.

  277. It's always the case.

  278. It begins with Abraham right up to Jesus and the new covenant,

  279. and it continues on today.

  280. And so here's the point of the sacrifices.

  281. The sacrifice of an animal like that is real.

  282. You hear the cry of the animal.

  283. You hear the cries of the animal that are about to come.

  284. There's the blood.

  285. There's the smell of the awful.

  286. Like, it's real.

  287. And it's real.

  288. It's not just sort of sitting in silence in the comfort of your room

  289. and thinking certain thoughts, which can just be all about imaginary gods.

  290. This is very real.

  291. It's very earthy.

  292. It's very striking.

  293. And if you're listening to God,

  294. he says these times of these sacrifices are times for you to remember the covenant.

  295. Remember that I am the God, that he is the God who loves you,

  296. that has rescued you, that's called you into a relationship with him.

  297. It's a time not just to remember the covenant but to focus on God,

  298. that this is being done in a sense for him and for our relationship

  299. and to honour him and to glorify him.

  300. And it's also a time to remember that just as I have times when nobody can be married

  301. for any length of time without having to learn to say they're sorry to their spouse

  302. because we do wrong.

  303. And if that's true of us with a spouse or even with a friend,

  304. and there's times we have to apologise to our children that we've done something wrong,

  305. but it's definitely the case that you cannot possibly have a relationship

  306. with a God that's actually real that you never say sorry.

  307. If you have a religion like that or a spirituality,

  308. you have an imaginary girlfriend.

  309. You have an imaginary God.

  310. Not real.

  311. Sorry, I don't want to insult you.

  312. But you can't have a real relationship with a real person

  313. without ever having to say you're sorry and make an amendment of life.

  314. And you see there's a great cost with the sacrifice.

  315. Now, what about us?

  316. If you could put up the second point, that would be very helpful.

  317. Here's the thing to understand.

  318. I'll say this again at the end if I remember.

  319. The Lord Jesus Christ's death upon the cross

  320. was the true and greater sacrifice

  321. to which all the sacrifices pointed.

  322. That's what Jesus told us.

  323. The Lord Jesus Christ's death upon the cross

  324. was the true and greater sacrifice

  325. to which all the sacrifices pointed.

  326. So we don't slaughter lambs.

  327. We don't slaughter bulls and oxen.

  328. Why?

  329. Because at one time for all people

  330. on a busy road outside of Jerusalem

  331. in a place that was so cosmopolitan

  332. the charges against Jesus had to be read in three languages

  333. Hebrew, Latin, and Greek

  334. that Jesus, the Lamb of God, died on a cross

  335. and in a sense what he did on earth

  336. was also done in a sense in the transcendent, the spiritual

  337. that was a once-for-all offering of God, the Son of God

  338. in our place to make us right with God.

  339. So that we would enter into this real relationship

  340. of real unfailing love with the real God.

  341. He provides that covenant

  342. and all of these point to him.

  343. But you notice that little bit about how the house of God wasn't made.

  344. Look at the very end of verse 6.

  345. It says,

  346. but the foundation of the temple of the Lord was not yet laid.

  347. Now that's a small thing here

  348. but once again this shows that we're talking about relationships.

  349. I'm a sucker.

  350. I am a sucker for The Rock

  351. and his movies.

  352. I know it's corny

  353. but you know if I just want to relax on a Sunday afternoon

  354. like I'll watch something

  355. I'll re-watch something like the San Andreas Fault

  356. with you know

  357. him flexing his muscles

  358. you know rescuing people

  359. and doing all that type of stuff

  360. with a caring...

  361. I'm a sucker for those things.

  362. Maybe some of you, now you have lower opinion of me

  363. well that's fine.

  364. I'm a sucker for them.

  365. And so if you watch something like that disaster movie

  366. the San Andreas Fault breaks

  367. you know the San Francisco's all having tidal waves

  368. and all that type of stuff

  369. and Dwayne Johnson

  370. I can't remember his name in that

  371. but he always plays the same character

  372. so it doesn't really matter what his character name is

  373. it's always Dwayne Johnson

  374. the imaginary Dwayne Johnson.

  375. I mean in real life he probably cries

  376. when he cuts his finger

  377. I don't know

  378. but you know in those things he's indestructible

  379. and completely and utterly fearless

  380. and of course

  381. so that you know

  382. his daughter of course

  383. is up in San Francisco

  384. his wife is there

  385. and so the whole movie

  386. as things are falling apart

  387. is his rushing

  388. there

  389. now what's he rushing to do?

  390. if he was rushing

  391. because he knew where there was land

  392. and he was going to go to that land

  393. and he was going to build a house

  394. and he was going to get everything set up with food

  395. and then he went and rescued them

  396. well first of all

  397. they'd have been dead

  398. well that would have sucked

  399. but even if he was successful

  400. they'd say

  401. like

  402. are you a moron?

  403. like are you a loser?

  404. like you really wanted to go build a house

  405. before you came to be with us

  406. and rescue us?

  407. like what's all that about?

  408. of course not

  409. he goes to be with them

  410. he goes to find them

  411. he finds his wife

  412. he finds his daughter

  413. they're together

  414. then they sort out all that stuff

  415. that's what a real relationship of love is all about

  416. and that's what's going on here

  417. they begin with connecting with God

  418. then we'll worry about the temple

  419. then we'll worry about the walls

  420. because it begins with a real relationship

  421. with a real God that really does exist

  422. now

  423. this next bit's a bit odd

  424. because all of a sudden

  425. it talks about them starting to build the house

  426. which we'll read in a moment

  427. and it

  428. and there's all these priests and Levites

  429. and they have to supervise it

  430. and it just seems really weird

  431. well here

  432. let's look at it

  433. and I'll tell you how to understand it

  434. it all

  435. it

  436. you have to think about it

  437. with a real God

  438. and a real relationship with that God

  439. and if you don't think of it in those terms

  440. nothing in the Bible is going to make sense

  441. let's look at what it says

  442. verse 7

  443. so

  444. the foundation hadn't even been based

  445. so verse 7

  446. they gave money to the masons and the carpenters

  447. and food and drink and oil to the Sidonians

  448. and the Tyrians

  449. to bring cedar lodges from Lebanon

  450. to the sea

  451. to Joppa

  452. according to the grant

  453. that they had from Cyrus

  454. king of Persia

  455. now in the second year

  456. after their coming

  457. to the house of God at Jerusalem

  458. in the second month

  459. Zerubbabel

  460. the son of Sheal-Atil

  461. and Yeshua

  462. the son of Jehozadak

  463. made a beginning together

  464. with the rest of their kinsmen

  465. and Yeshua

  466. Yeshua is a priest

  467. and with the other priests

  468. and the Levites

  469. who had come from

  470. to Jerusalem

  471. from the captivity

  472. they appointed the Levites

  473. from 20 years old and upward

  474. to supervise the work

  475. of the house of the Lord

  476. and Yeshua

  477. with his sons

  478. and his brothers

  479. and Kadmiel

  480. and his sons

  481. and the sons of Judah

  482. together supervised the workmen

  483. in the house of God

  484. along with the sons

  485. of Hinnadad

  486. and the Levites

  487. and their sons

  488. and brothers

  489. and we'll just sort of pause here

  490. so what's going on?

  491. well I think you're going to know this

  492. instantly if I said this

  493. if it turned out

  494. that I'd won a small lottery

  495. and I'd got

  496. four or five hundred thousand dollars

  497. and I decided

  498. you know what I think

  499. I'm going to do

  500. I think I'm going to build

  501. a brand new house

  502. for Louise

  503. and I'm not going to tell her

  504. I'm going to find some land

  505. and I'm going to design the house

  506. and I'm going to

  507. supervise the builders

  508. and when it's all done

  509. I'm going to say to Louise

  510. one day

  511. let's go for a drive

  512. out in the country

  513. and we drive out

  514. to the country

  515. and I said

  516. see that house?

  517. does it look nice?

  518. yeah it looks nice

  519. I bought it

  520. and designed it

  521. and had it built for us

  522. do you think she'd be happy?

  523. no

  524. would she be right

  525. to be unhappy?

  526. yes

  527. she'd probably say

  528. something like

  529. George you had that money

  530. you didn't tell me

  531. and

  532. you know how much

  533. I would love

  534. to design a house?

  535. do you know how much

  536. I would enjoy

  537. talking with you

  538. over it

  539. about designing a house?

  540. do you have any idea?

  541. do you have any idea

  542. what you robbed me of?

  543. so what's going on here

  544. is

  545. they have the priests

  546. and the Levites

  547. supervising the building

  548. the house

  549. because the house

  550. has to be built

  551. as it is written

  552. it's God's house

  553. he designs it

  554. not them

  555. and that's why

  556. they're supervising it

  557. they're supervising it

  558. because

  559. it's

  560. for him

  561. now

  562. some of you might say

  563. well George

  564. that's

  565. you know

  566. that's a very

  567. creative way

  568. of reading the text

  569. but I think

  570. you're just

  571. imposing that

  572. on the text

  573. I don't think

  574. that's actually

  575. something that

  576. the text says

  577. I think you're

  578. just making it up

  579. and imposing

  580. on the text

  581. and it's a very

  582. interesting re-reading

  583. but that's not

  584. what the text says

  585. well it is

  586. look at verse 10

  587. and following

  588. and when the builders

  589. laid the foundation

  590. of the temple

  591. of the Lord

  592. the priests

  593. in their vestments

  594. came forward

  595. with trumpets

  596. and the Levites

  597. the sons of Asaph

  598. with symbols

  599. to praise the Lord

  600. according to the directions

  601. of David the king of Israel

  602. in other words

  603. just like one of you

  604. or any of us

  605. if we were going to build

  606. a house or something

  607. at a certain point in time

  608. we might take a bit of a break

  609. and have a barbecue

  610. and you know

  611. have a bit of a party

  612. and so they've come

  613. to a key part

  614. they've cleared away

  615. enough room

  616. that they can lay down

  617. the foundation

  618. they have a pause

  619. they have a party

  620. but look what happens next

  621. and they sang responsibly

  622. praising and giving thanks

  623. to the Lord

  624. what do they say

  625. for he is good

  626. for his steadfast love

  627. endures forever

  628. toward Israel

  629. for he is good

  630. for his steadfast love

  631. endures forever

  632. toward Israel

  633. and all the people

  634. shouted with a great shout

  635. when they praised the Lord

  636. because the foundation

  637. of the house of the Lord

  638. was laid

  639. now all the way

  640. through this

  641. every time you see

  642. the word Lord

  643. that's the covenant

  644. name for God

  645. it would be as if

  646. you know

  647. my grandkids

  648. if they always refer

  649. to it like a generic

  650. type of grandfather

  651. and all

  652. but they don't just

  653. when they talk to me

  654. I'm not their generic

  655. grandfather

  656. I'm their papa

  657. when they talk

  658. about Louise

  659. she's not a generic

  660. grandmother

  661. she's Nana

  662. she's their Nana

  663. and whenever you see

  664. the word Lord

  665. that's this

  666. that's the covenant

  667. name for God

  668. that's their private

  669. name for God

  670. and when you see

  671. this song right here

  672. for he is good

  673. for his steadfast love

  674. endures forever

  675. toward Israel

  676. usually in the Bible

  677. if you see this word

  678. steadfast love

  679. in the ESV

  680. it's translated

  681. one of the most

  682. important words

  683. in the Old Testament

  684. and I can't pronounce it

  685. because I can get that

  686. I can't get that guttural

  687. but it has said

  688. and has said

  689. is this idea

  690. of this unfailing

  691. steadfast

  692. covenant

  693. love

  694. and it describes

  695. how the Lord

  696. is towards his people

  697. that his love

  698. is a covenant love

  699. a relationship love

  700. like marriage

  701. is a covenant

  702. at least in a Christian sense

  703. and it's describing

  704. this covenant love

  705. between the Lord

  706. with his covenant name

  707. and his people

  708. and his love

  709. is steadfast

  710. it doesn't change

  711. and it's unfailing

  712. it can never not exist

  713. and that's the love

  714. that he has

  715. towards its people

  716. you see the text

  717. is trying to tell you

  718. that it's not about

  719. trying to figure out

  720. rules and religion

  721. and ritual

  722. that it's about

  723. relationship with a real God

  724. that's what the text

  725. is trying to tell you

  726. if you could put up

  727. the third point

  728. that would be very helpful

  729. here's the thing

  730. just as a bit of an

  731. not an aside

  732. it's a key part to this

  733. it's a key part

  734. to understanding Ezra

  735. and understanding yourselves

  736. you have a longing

  737. and a yearning

  738. to be in a relationship

  739. of unfailing love

  740. that is good

  741. and true

  742. and realer than real

  743. every human being

  744. every human being

  745. has a longing

  746. and a yearning

  747. to be in a relationship

  748. of unfailing love

  749. that is good

  750. and true

  751. and realer than real

  752. we might not want

  753. to acknowledge it

  754. it might be

  755. that it's dormant

  756. for long periods

  757. of time

  758. it might just be

  759. that in certain types

  760. of context

  761. it comes to the fore

  762. but that is a love

  763. that you have

  764. it's ultimately

  765. a love

  766. a desire

  767. that you have

  768. to know

  769. the chesed love

  770. of the Lord

  771. and that he is not

  772. just a generic God

  773. but that he is

  774. a God

  775. whose name you know

  776. and he knows

  777. your name

  778. it's also something

  779. we desire

  780. to have

  781. as much as

  782. possible

  783. with people

  784. you have

  785. that yearning

  786. only the gospel

  787. satisfies the deep

  788. yearning of your heart

  789. only the gospel

  790. satisfies the deep

  791. longing

  792. and yearning

  793. of your heart

  794. if you could put up

  795. the next point

  796. if you have

  797. you know

  798. if you'd like to join

  799. our music team

  800. that would be wonderful

  801. but usually

  802. before the service

  803. I pray some version

  804. of this prayer

  805. with the musicians

  806. and that is

  807. you come into

  808. his presence

  809. but it's describing

  810. what we're doing

  811. this morning

  812. you come into

  813. his presence

  814. to know him

  815. as the triune God

  816. receive grace

  817. from him

  818. and respond

  819. in a worthy manner

  820. that's what we do

  821. that's what this

  822. is supposed to be about

  823. us coming

  824. into the presence

  825. of the triune God

  826. we come together

  827. with our brothers

  828. and sisters

  829. all adopted

  830. by grace

  831. into his family

  832. and we come

  833. to receive grace

  834. from him

  835. and we come

  836. to respond

  837. in a worthy manner

  838. it's in this text

  839. it's what's to

  840. characterize

  841. our worship

  842. and our life

  843. two more things

  844. just to bring

  845. this to a close

  846. it's

  847. and the first one

  848. is really

  849. important for us

  850. because the fact

  851. of the matter

  852. is

  853. we have

  854. complicated

  855. emotions

  856. people are

  857. complicated

  858. the world

  859. keeps wanting

  860. to try to

  861. reduce us

  862. a lot

  863. most modern

  864. thought

  865. tends towards

  866. reductionism

  867. to reduce us

  868. to something

  869. simple

  870. but the Bible

  871. acknowledges

  872. our emotional

  873. complexity

  874. and it's seen

  875. here in this

  876. very next part

  877. of the story

  878. look what happens

  879. in verse 12

  880. so the foundation

  881. has been laid

  882. there's a little

  883. altar

  884. at a certain

  885. part of

  886. surrounded by

  887. a foundation

  888. they're all

  889. ruins everywhere

  890. they're afraid

  891. of the people

  892. but many of the

  893. priests

  894. verse 12

  895. and the Levites

  896. and heads

  897. of the fathers

  898. houses

  899. old men

  900. who had

  901. seen the

  902. first

  903. house

  904. that's

  905. Solomon's

  906. temple

  907. they wept

  908. with a loud

  909. voice

  910. when they saw

  911. the foundation

  912. of this house

  913. being laid

  914. though many

  915. shouted aloud

  916. with joy

  917. such a beautiful

  918. picture

  919. many weeping

  920. and many shouting

  921. for joy

  922. all at the same

  923. time

  924. all in the same

  925. service

  926. so that the

  927. people could not

  928. distinguish

  929. verse 13

  930. could not

  931. distinguish

  932. the sound

  933. of the joyful

  934. shout

  935. from the

  936. sound

  937. of the

  938. people's

  939. weeping

  940. the people

  941. shouted

  942. with a great

  943. shout

  944. and the sound

  945. was heard

  946. far away

  947. you know

  948. here's the

  949. thing

  950. we just celebrated

  951. a baptism

  952. of a beautiful

  953. little baby

  954. girl

  955. there are also

  956. women

  957. and family

  958. there's families

  959. in this church

  960. that struggle

  961. with infertility

  962. there's people

  963. in this service

  964. who wish

  965. that they

  966. could be

  967. married

  968. and have

  969. not been

  970. able to

  971. be married

  972. and on one

  973. hand

  974. to see

  975. this beautiful

  976. baby girl

  977. get baptized

  978. on one

  979. hand

  980. your heart

  981. weeps

  982. your heart

  983. weeps

  984. and for others

  985. you're filled

  986. with joy

  987. and both

  988. responses

  989. are good

  990. and both

  991. responses

  992. can be

  993. in the

  994. church

  995. they can

  996. both

  997. be in

  998. your small

  999. group

  1000. some

  1001. will

  1002. celebrate

  1003. the promotion

  1004. that somebody

  1005. gets

  1006. and others

  1007. will be

  1008. sad

  1009. at their

  1010. own failure

  1011. in their

  1012. areas of

  1013. professional

  1014. work

  1015. and both

  1016. can be

  1017. there

  1018. both

  1019. should be

  1020. there

  1021. not can

  1022. be

  1023. should

  1024. be

  1025. there

  1026. because

  1027. we are

  1028. emotionally

  1029. complex

  1030. people

  1031. and our

  1032. community

  1033. should

  1034. allow freedom

  1035. for emotional

  1036. complexity

  1037. and you know

  1038. Romans 8

  1039. says all

  1040. things work

  1041. together for

  1042. good for

  1043. those who

  1044. love God

  1045. and this

  1046. is another

  1047. place where

  1048. we both

  1049. weep and

  1050. mourn at

  1051. the same

  1052. time

  1053. and that's

  1054. very true

  1055. obviously

  1056. for Christians

  1057. that's very

  1058. true

  1059. all things

  1060. work together

  1061. for good

  1062. for those

  1063. who love

  1064. God

  1065. but you

  1066. know

  1067. our sin

  1068. and our

  1069. rebellion

  1070. and our

  1071. hard-headedness

  1072. and our

  1073. just plain

  1074. stupidity

  1075. and foolishness

  1076. sometimes

  1077. mean that

  1078. we lose

  1079. real goods

  1080. God

  1081. gives us

  1082. a new

  1083. good

  1084. but the

  1085. real good

  1086. is lost

  1087. even when

  1088. we get

  1089. a new

  1090. good

  1091. and so

  1092. even in

  1093. our private

  1094. lives we

  1095. can have

  1096. times of

  1097. deep regret

  1098. and weeping

  1099. at the

  1100. good that

  1101. was lost

  1102. while we

  1103. accept and

  1104. rejoice in

  1105. the new

  1106. good that

  1107. God has

  1108. given us

  1109. just one

  1110. final thing

  1111. bringing this

  1112. to a close

  1113. enemies

  1114. enemies

  1115. chapter 4

  1116. verses 1

  1117. to 5

  1118. now when

  1119. the adversaries

  1120. of Judah

  1121. and Benjamin

  1122. heard that

  1123. the returned

  1124. exiles were

  1125. building a

  1126. temple to

  1127. the Lord

  1128. the God

  1129. of Israel

  1130. now just

  1131. pause

  1132. the word

  1133. there for

  1134. adversaries

  1135. in the

  1136. Hebrew

  1137. the original

  1138. language

  1139. actually

  1140. the original

  1141. language has

  1142. a range of

  1143. meanings

  1144. but all of

  1145. them are

  1146. bad

  1147. adversary

  1148. is actually

  1149. the weakest

  1150. of the

  1151. senses

  1152. can also

  1153. be translated

  1154. as foe

  1155. oppressor

  1156. enemy

  1157. and it

  1158. has with

  1159. it as well

  1160. sometimes it's

  1161. used to

  1162. physical objects

  1163. as a hard

  1164. pebble that

  1165. cannot be

  1166. broken or

  1167. flint

  1168. so it's

  1169. communicating

  1170. this idea

  1171. of an

  1172. oppressor

  1173. who's like

  1174. a hard

  1175. pebble

  1176. that can't

  1177. be broken

  1178. now when

  1179. the

  1180. enemies

  1181. the oppressors

  1182. who are

  1183. their

  1184. neighbors

  1185. heard

  1186. that they

  1187. had

  1188. returned

  1189. well they're

  1190. the enemies

  1191. they're

  1192. haters

  1193. they're

  1194. people who

  1195. want them

  1196. to fail

  1197. I don't

  1198. think there's

  1199. anybody here

  1200. over a

  1201. certain age

  1202. hasn't had

  1203. somebody in

  1204. their life

  1205. who was a

  1206. hater

  1207. and they

  1208. approached

  1209. verse 2

  1210. that's the

  1211. enemies

  1212. they approached

  1213. Zerabbel

  1214. and the

  1215. heads of

  1216. the

  1217. fathers

  1218. houses

  1219. and said

  1220. to them

  1221. let us

  1222. build with

  1223. you

  1224. for we

  1225. worship

  1226. your

  1227. God

  1228. as you

  1229. do

  1230. and we

  1231. have been

  1232. sacrificing

  1233. to him

  1234. ever since

  1235. the days

  1236. of

  1237. Esar

  1238. and the

  1239. king of

  1240. Assyria

  1241. who brought

  1242. us here

  1243. but

  1244. Zerabbel

  1245. Yeshua

  1246. and the

  1247. rest of

  1248. the heads

  1249. of the

  1250. fathers

  1251. houses

  1252. and Israel

  1253. said to

  1254. them

  1255. you have

  1256. nothing

  1257. to do

  1258. with us

  1259. in building

  1260. a house

  1261. to our

  1262. God

  1263. but we

  1264. alone

  1265. will build

  1266. the house

  1267. to the

  1268. Lord

  1269. the God

  1270. of Israel

  1271. as King

  1272. Cyrus

  1273. the king

  1274. of Persia

  1275. has commanded

  1276. us

  1277. I'm going

  1278. to say

  1279. more about

  1280. this in a

  1281. moment

  1282. but I'll

  1283. just read

  1284. the final

  1285. two verses

  1286. then the

  1287. people of

  1288. the land

  1289. discouraged

  1290. the people

  1291. of Judah

  1292. other

  1293. translations

  1294. use stronger

  1295. words than

  1296. discouraged

  1297. they harassed

  1298. threatened

  1299. hated

  1300. cajoled

  1301. insulted

  1302. hated

  1303. the people

  1304. of Judah

  1305. and made

  1306. them afraid

  1307. to build

  1308. they bribed

  1309. counselors

  1310. against them

  1311. to frustrate

  1312. their purpose

  1313. all the days

  1314. of Cyrus

  1315. king of Persia

  1316. even until

  1317. the reign

  1318. of Darius

  1319. king of Persia

  1320. now

  1321. if you go

  1322. on to read

  1323. the rest of

  1324. chapter 4

  1325. 5 and 6

  1326. which I'm

  1327. not going

  1328. to read

  1329. and one

  1330. of the things

  1331. I've discovered

  1332. that if it

  1333. wants to be

  1334. helpful to

  1335. read

  1336. you have to

  1337. pay attention

  1338. to the

  1339. emperors

  1340. who are

  1341. listed

  1342. and it's

  1343. helpful to

  1344. maybe

  1345. I'm going

  1346. to have

  1347. a little

  1348. piece of

  1349. paper

  1350. that gives

  1351. me the

  1352. names of

  1353. the emperors

  1354. and the

  1355. dates

  1356. that they

  1357. reigned

  1358. but what

  1359. this book

  1360. just casually

  1361. mentions

  1362. is this

  1363. is over

  1364. a hundred

  1365. years of

  1366. hatred

  1367. this is

  1368. intergenerational

  1369. hatred

  1370. the scan

  1371. of the books

  1372. of Ezra

  1373. and Nehemiah

  1374. take place

  1375. over a hundred

  1376. years

  1377. and these

  1378. people who

  1379. hated them

  1380. hated them

  1381. for a hundred

  1382. years

  1383. a hundred

  1384. years of

  1385. hatred

  1386. now

  1387. the

  1388. communist

  1389. kicked

  1390. the

  1391. missionaries

  1392. out of

  1393. China

  1394. about

  1395. seven

  1396. years

  1397. ago

  1398. our

  1399. Chinese

  1400. brothers

  1401. and

  1402. sisters

  1403. have

  1404. faced

  1405. intergeneral

  1406. hatred

  1407. from the

  1408. communist

  1409. party

  1410. of

  1411. China

  1412. Khomeini

  1413. took power

  1414. in Iran

  1415. in late

  1416. 1970

  1417. the underground

  1418. church in Iran

  1419. is coming up to

  1420. 55 years of

  1421. hatred

  1422. intergenerational

  1423. hatred

  1424. hatred

  1425. and we can go

  1426. around the

  1427. world of

  1428. other places

  1429. of intergenerational

  1430. hatred

  1431. now what you

  1432. see the book of

  1433. Ezra and Nehemiah

  1434. about is the

  1435. flip side of that

  1436. because it doesn't

  1437. focus on it

1438. if you could put up

  1439. the point that

  1440. would be very

  1441. helpful

  1442. to follow the

  1443. Lord involves a

  1444. crucial and

  1445. inescapable

  1446. intergenerational

  1447. dimension

  1448. one of the

  1449. questions that

  1450. was put to

  1451. me at

  1452. GAFCON

  1453. which was

  1454. very

  1455. very

  1456. it's been

  1457. playing around

  1458. in my brain

  1459. like a

  1460. virus

  1461. the question

  1462. is who's

  1463. going to be

  1464. the pastor

  1465. of your

  1466. great

  1467. grandchildren

  1468. we all

  1469. hope that

  1470. Jesus will

  1471. come back

  1472. but who's

  1473. going to

  1474. pastor

  1475. your

  1476. great

  1477. grandchildren

  1478. now on

  1479. one hand

  1480. we need

  1481. to live

  1482. every day

  1483. as if

  1484. Jesus

  1485. might come

  1486. back

  1487. tonight

  1488. but on

  1489. the other

  1490. hand

  1491. we need

  1492. to wrestle

  1493. with this

  1494. intergenerational

  1495. aspect of

  1496. discipleship

  1497. that's why

  1498. things like

  1499. royal seminary

  1500. and church

  1501. planting are

  1502. so important

  1503. but it's

  1504. also why

  1505. we have to

  1506. find ways

  1507. to help

  1508. parents raise

  1509. godly

  1510. children

  1511. have good

  1512. Sunday school

  1513. and good

  1514. other types

  1515. of mentoring

  1516. and maybe

  1517. we should

  1518. be getting

  1519. into helping

  1520. people homeschool

  1521. because

  1522. increasingly

  1523. our culture

  1524. is very

  1525. very

  1526. anti-Christian

  1527. but there's

  1528. this inescapable

  1529. thing and that's

  1530. what's hidden

  1531. in the book

  1532. of Ezra

  1533. it's part of

  1534. the story

  1535. of the book

  1536. of Ezra

  1537. and Nehemiah

  1538. is that

  1539. they fail

  1540. they fail

  1541. time and time

  1542. and time

  1543. and time

  1544. again

  1545. but God

  1546. is faithful

  1547. why

  1548. because his

  1549. love towards

  1550. us is

  1551. hesed

  1552. it is

  1553. steadfast

  1554. it is

  1555. unfailing

  1556. it is

  1557. covenant

  1558. love

  1559. and so

  1560. they stumble

  1561. they're going

  1562. to spend

  1563. 17 years

  1564. not building

  1565. the temple

  1566. it's going

  1567. to take

  1568. 20 years

  1569. to build

  1570. the temple

  1571. because of

  1572. their fear

  1573. but God

  1574. never gives

  1575. up

  1576. he doesn't

  1577. give up

  1578. even though

  1579. many do

  1580. and he

  1581. sends

  1582. prophets

  1583. to challenge

  1584. them

  1585. at a

  1586. serious

  1587. time

  1588. and by

  1589. the way

  1590. you know

  1591. something

  1592. which is

  1593. so interesting

  1594. about how

  1595. the wisdom

  1596. of God

  1597. works

  1598. when Israel

  1599. was falling

  1600. apart

  1601. there was a

  1602. prophet named

  1603. Jeremiah

  1604. who said

  1605. there would

  1606. be 70

  1607. years

  1608. before

  1609. that the

  1610. temple

  1611. would be

  1612. back

  1613. and the

  1614. people of

  1615. Israel

  1616. would be

  1617. back

  1618. and the

  1619. worship

  1620. would be

  1621. back

  1622. they came

  1623. and they

  1624. started to

  1625. build

  1626. you can

  1627. check this

  1628. with all

  1629. the time

  1630. references

  1631. in 536

  1632. BC

  1633. they start

  1634. to build

  1635. the temple

  1636. they fall

  1637. into fear

  1638. they end

  1639. up finishing

  1640. it in the

  1641. year 560

  1642. BC

  1643. and 516

  1644. year BC

  1645. is 70

  1646. years after

  1647. the temple

  1648. was destroyed

  1649. in 586

  1650. BC

  1651. God kept

  1652. his word

  1653. it is

  1654. written

  1655. one final

  1656. thing

  1657. the Bible

  1658. gives hope

  1659. for enemies

  1660. you could put

  1661. up the final

  1662. point

  1663. here's the

  1664. thing I want

  1665. you to

  1666. understand

  1667. the Lord

  1668. does not

  1669. want more

  1670. Canadians

  1671. he has

  1672. zero interest

  1673. in Canadians

  1674. he wants

  1675. to adopt

  1676. more children

  1677. to glorify

  1678. and enjoy

  1679. him forever

  1680. forever

  1681. when I went

  1682. to Gafcon

  1683. there were

  1684. 52 nations

  1685. represented

  1686. and God

  1687. doesn't want

  1688. more Nigerians

  1689. and more

  1690. Singaporeans

  1691. and more

  1692. people from

  1693. Indonesia

  1694. he just

  1695. wants more

  1696. children

  1697. you maintain

  1698. aspects of

  1699. your cultural

  1700. identity

  1701. that's

  1702. wonderful

  1703. that has

  1704. to be

  1705. if you're

  1706. human

  1707. you're

  1708. going to

  1709. have

  1710. culture

  1711. but at

  1712. the end

  1713. of the day

  1714. he doesn't

  1715. want more

  1716. of that

  1717. he wants

  1718. you

  1719. he wants

  1720. you

  1721. he wants

  1722. you to be

  1723. his child

  1724. by adoption

  1725. and grace

  1726. now why

  1727. why am I

  1728. saying that

  1729. it's not

  1730. on the

  1731. screen

  1732. but if

  1733. you turn

  1734. to chapter

  1735. 6 verse

  1736. 21

  1737. which is

  1738. giving you

  1739. chapter 4

  1740. 5 and 6

  1741. gives you

  1742. this 20

  1743. year period

  1744. before the

  1745. temple ends

  1746. up getting

  1747. built

  1748. if you look

  1749. at chapter

  1750. 6 verse

  1751. 21

  1752. verse 19

  1753. on the 14th

  1754. day of the

  1755. first month

  1756. the returned

  1757. exiles

  1758. kept the

  1759. Passover

  1760. for the

  1761. priests and

  1762. Levites

  1763. had purified

  1764. themselves

  1765. all of them

  1766. were clean

  1767. so they

  1768. slaughtered the

  1769. Passover lamb

  1770. for all the

  1771. returned

  1772. exiles

  1773. for their

  1774. fellow priests

  1775. and for

  1776. themselves

  1777. it was

  1778. eaten

  1779. by the

  1780. people of

  1781. Israel

  1782. who had

  1783. returned

  1784. from exile

  1785. and also

  1786. by everyone

  1787. who had

  1788. joined them

  1789. and separated

  1790. himself

  1791. from the

  1792. uncleanness

  1793. of the

  1794. peoples of

  1795. the land

  1796. to worship

  1797. the Lord

  1798. the God

  1799. of Israel

  1800. by some

  1801. of the

  1802. haters

  1803. the people

  1804. gave up

  1805. having their

  1806. children

  1807. sacrificed

  1808. to Moloch

  1809. and who

  1810. had hated

  1811. the Israelites

  1812. who become

  1813. followers

  1814. of the

  1815. Lord

  1816. hate

  1817. doesn't

  1818. have the

  1819. final word

  1820. God's

  1821. heart is

  1822. that he

  1823. wants more

  1824. children

  1825. he doesn't

  1826. want more

  1827. people

  1828. biologically

  1829. descended

  1830. from Abraham

  1831. or from

  1832. one of the

  1833. twelve

  1834. I mean he

  1835. wants more

  1836. of them

  1837. sure he

  1838. does

  1839. but he

  1840. brings you

  1841. in by

  1842. adoption

  1843. and grace

  1844. and we

  1845. are to

  1846. pray for

  1847. our

  1848. persecutors

  1849. we are

  1850. to pray

  1851. for our

  1852. haters

  1853. we are

  1854. to pray

  1855. for them

  1856. please stand

  1857. as we

  1858. bring it

  1859. to a

  1861. you know

  1862. I'm just

  1863. gonna

  1864. I'm gonna

  1865. say one

  1866. thing

  1867. as I

  1868. as I

  1869. just

  1870. yeah

  1871. no

  1872. let

  1873. we'll

  1874. just

  1875. close

  1876. let's

  1877. close

  1878. father

  1879. we

  1880. thank you

  1881. that you

  1882. are a

  1883. god

  1884. who

  1885. loves

  1886. us

  1887. you

  1888. really

  1889. exist

  1890. you

  1891. call

  1892. us

  1893. into a

  1894. real

  1895. relationship

  1896. with

  1897. you

  1898. you

  1899. call

  1900. us

  1901. knowing

  1902. what

  1903. we're

  1904. really

  1905. like

  1906. you

  1907. adopt

  1908. us

  1909. as your

  1910. child

  1911. you

  1912. call

  1913. us

  1914. to be

  1915. part

  1916. of your

  1917. kingdom

  1918. and

  1919. you

  1920. want

  1921. us

  1922. to be

  1923. part

  1924. of

  1925. not

  1926. just

  1927. a

  1928. generic

  1929. abstract

  1930. family

  1931. but

  1932. to have

  1933. local

  1934. churches

  1935. that we

  1936. can be

  1937. part

  1938. of

  1939. where

  1940. we

  1941. can

  1942. rejoice

  1943. with

  1944. those

  1945. who

  1946. rejoice

  1947. and

  1948. weep

  1949. with

  1950. those

  1951. who

  1952. weep

  1953. and

  1954. support

  1955. those

  1956. who

  1957. need

  1958. support

  1959. and

  1960. receive

  1961. support

  1962. when

  1963. we

  1964. need

  1965. support

  1966. and

  1967. we

  1968. can

  1969. put

  1970. an

  1971. arm

  1972. around

  1973. people

  1974. and

  1975. they

  1976. can

  1977. put

  1978. an

  1979. arm

  1980. around

  1981. us

  1982. and

  1983. we

  1984. can

  1985. pray

  1986. for

  1987. people

  1988. and

  1989. they

  1990. can

  1991. pray

  1992. for

  1993. us

  1994. and

  1995. we

  1996. can

  1997. help

  1998. each

  1999. other

  2000. out

  2001. and

  2002. we

  2003. learn

  2004. what

  2005. it

  2006. means

  2007. to walk

  2008. with

  2009. you

  2010. and follow

  2011. you

  2012. together

  2013. and

  2014. we

  2015. can

  2016. have

  2017. a

  2018. heart

  2019. for

  2020. our

  2021. culture

  2022. that

  2023. even

  2024. that

  2025. parts

  2026. of

  2027. our

  2028. culture

  2029. that

  2030. hate

  2031. us

  2032. that

  2033. we

  2034. don't

  2035. hate

  2036. them

  2037. but

  2038. that

  2039. we

  2040. would

  2041. have

  2042. strong

  2043. confidence

  2044. father

  2045. that

  2046. you

  2047. are

  2048. God

  2049. that

  2050. you

  2051. are

  2052. real

  2053. that

  2054. you

  2055. have

  2056. a

  2057. plan

  2058. and

  2059. purpose

  2060. that

  2061. you

  2062. are

  2063. bringing

  2064. things

  2065. to

  2066. their

  2067. proper

  2068. end

  2069. and

  2070. we

  2071. can

  2072. pray

  2073. that

  2074. you

  2075. turn

  2076. the

  2077. hearts

  2078. of

  2079. haters

  2080. away

  2081. from

  2082. hate

  2083. not

  2084. so

  2085. much

  2086. to

  2087. love

  2088. towards

  2089. us

  2090. but

  2091. love

  2092. towards

  2093. you

  2094. and

  2095. from

  2096. that

  2097. love

  2098. towards

  2099. you

  2100. will

  2101. love

  2102. towards

  2103. us

  2104. and

  2105. father

  2106. we

  2107. ask

  2108. that

  2109. you

  2110. help

  2111. us

  2112. to

  2113. have

  2114. such

  2115. lives

  2116. of

  2117. prayer

  2118. may

  2119. the

  2120. gospel

  2121. grip

  2122. us

  2123. we

  2124. ask

  2125. this

  2126. in

  2127. the

  2128. name

  2129. of

  2130. Jesus

  2131. your

  2132. son

  2133. and

  2134. our

  2135. savior

  2136. and

  2137. all

  2138. God's

  2139. people

  2140. said

  2141. Amen
