  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you.

  18. I'm going to ask this if you remain standing for our opening song.

  19. We're going to be singing Psalm 145, sorry, 145, verses 1 through 9.

  20. I will extol.

  21. Thank you.

  22. Each generation.

  23. Thank you.

  24. In your benevolence and your abundant grace,

  25. they'll celebrate the righteousness that you have shown to them.

  26. In praise and joy, so they will relate.

  27. The Lord is gracious and compassionate.

  28. He's slow to anger, rich in steadfast love.

  29. The Lord is good to all that He has made,

  30. and merciful to all on earth that move.

  31. I'm going to ask Stephen to come up now.

  32. He's going to be reading a passage of Scripture from the Old Testament.

  33. Ecclesiastes chapter 5, verses 10 through 17.

    Ecclesiastes 5:10–17

  34. Whoever loves money never has enough.

  35. Whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.

  36. This, too, is meaningless.

  37. As goods increase, so do those who consume them.

  38. And what benefits are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them?

  39. The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much.

  40. But as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.

  41. I have seen such a grievous evil under the sun.

  42. Wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners, or wealth lost through some misfortune.

  43. So that when they have children, there is nothing left for them to inherit.

  44. Everyone comes from their mother's womb, and everyone comes, so they depart.

  45. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.

  46. This, too, is a grievous evil.

  47. As everyone comes, so they depart.

  48. And what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?

  49. All their days they eat in darkness, with great frustration, affliction, and anger.

  50. This is God's words.

  51. Let's pray.

  52. Heavenly Father, we come before you this Sunday, acknowledging our sin and confessing our sin and our guilt.

  53. We acknowledge many times this week we have sinned against your holy law, even today.

  54. We have looked for security, satisfaction, goodness and truth, not in you, but in ourselves and in your creation.

  55. We know that we are not worthy to be called for us to approach you as our heavenly Father.

  56. But we are thankful for the grace and mercy that you've shown to us in Christ.

  57. That it's because of his work on the cross that we can be adopted into sonship,

  58. and that you can look upon us and forget our sins,

  59. and that it is the righteousness of Christ that we have that allows us to be blameless in your sight.

  60. We also lift up Keith before you as he comes to preach your word.

  61. We pray that you would be able to use him as your instrument to speak to us truth and goodness.

  62. We pray that your spirit would be with him.

  63. And we just pray for us that we would be listening with hearts and minds open,

  64. and that we would be able to respond to your message in faith and repentance.

  65. And we just pray this all in your name.

  66. Amen.

  67. Amen.

  68. Well, we're about to stand again to sing our next psalm.

  69. This is Psalm 39.

  70. And it gives the same message of what we see in Ecclesiastes,

  71. the same message that what we're going to see in 1 John 2 about the vanity of life.

  72. We're going to be thinking tonight about how we need to have no love for this world and the darkness in it.

  73. And so we're going to sing the same thing in our psalm to recognize the brevity of our life,

  74. the vanity of our life apart from our love for Christ.

  75. Will you stand with me to sing Psalm 39?

  76. Lord, show me that my life will end,

  77. how many days I'll see,

  78. and cause me, Lord, to understand how brief my life will be.

  79. O Lord, how short you make my days,

  80. before I sink in death.

  81. My years are nothing in your sight,

  82. man's life is but a breath.

  83. Like shadows people go apart,

  84. they bustle to and fall.

  85. They heap up wealth,

  86. but do not know

  87. to whom their wealth will go.

  88. O Lord, please listen to me,

  89. my prayer,

  90. and hear my cry for aid.

  91. Do not be deaf to the appeal,

  92. which I with tears have made.

  93. For as your guests I stay a while,

  94. I'm like my fathers all.

  95. A stranger and a pilgrim here,

  96. have mercy when I call.

  97. O turn away your eyes from me,

  98. let me rejoice again.

  99. before I finally depart,

  100. and hear no more remain.

  101. Amen.

  102. Amen.

  103. Well, let's turn to the Lord again in prayer.

  104. God, we thank you again for the privilege

  105. to be in your house this evening,

  106. to gather together as your people

  107. to give you praise.

  108. And we recognize, God,

  109. that we are not worthy to be called your people.

  110. We are not worthy to be your sons and daughters.

  111. As Stephen has already prayed,

  112. we recognize our own sin

  113. and our own depravity

  114. that separates us from your holiness.

  115. We recognize that we are children of wrath

  116. apart from the grace of God.

  117. And so, God, we come to you humbly

  118. and repent of our sins.

  119. We recognize that we have wandered away from you

  120. in thought, in word, and in deed.

  121. And we ask for forgiveness.

  122. We ask that you may cleanse our hearts

  123. by the blood of Jesus.

  124. May you see his righteousness in us.

  125. And with that reality, Lord,

  126. may it transform the way that we live our lives

  127. as we've sung and read already

  128. to recognize the vanity of our lives,

  129. to recognize just how short our time on this earth is,

  130. but we desire to make it count for you.

  131. God, we think of the many ministries of this church,

  132. the activities within this community.

  133. And we pray, Lord,

  134. that you will allow us to be productive

  135. in our mission.

  136. That we may see this city, this community,

  137. this nation transformed with the truth of the gospel.

  138. And so, God, while the task seems so

  139. outside of our reach,

  140. we can be so overwhelmed by the secular society around us

  141. that we think we are losing ground,

  142. may we not forget that you are the king

  143. and that your kingdom will never fail.

  144. And so, God, we ask that you equip us

  145. and enable us,

  146. give us a desire to serve you.

  147. We think of the many practical opportunities

  148. even in this church.

  149. We think of our international ministry, Connect.

  150. We thank you for the numbers that you have brought

  151. in recent weeks,

  152. both students,

  153. middle-aged and elderly,

  154. those who are new to our city,

  155. those craving relationship,

  156. those searching for truth.

  157. May we be faithful in pointing them to you.

  158. We thank you for the revamping of our toddlers group,

  159. for the new faces of parents and children who have come.

  160. We pray, Lord, for more in this community

  161. to know the opportunity for relationship here,

  162. that these families may be loved and served well,

  163. that they may come into this building

  164. and recognize your presence and your love

  165. in a way that they never have before.

  166. Lord, we thank you for the many students we have in our midst.

  167. And though some cycle through

  168. and some are only here for a short amount of time,

  169. Lord, we do ask that we may be faithful

  170. in loving them and serving them.

  171. We know there are many other churches

  172. that care for students well also,

  173. so we ask that you equip them

  174. with the heart and the desire

  175. and the ability to transform lives.

  176. We pray, Lord, for our students

  177. who are in the midst of a very difficult environment

  178. where darkness pervades the campus,

  179. where Christianity is scoffed at.

  180. May they hold firm to their faith.

  181. May you be close to them.

  182. May you prove yourself faithful to them

  183. and may you give them a boldness

  184. to share the good news of the gospel.

  185. Lord, we pray that for each one of us

  186. in our each walks of lives

  187. in the corners of this city that we live,

  188. that we may be lights in darkness,

  189. that we may speak truth in love,

  190. that others may come to know you.

  191. Lord, as we want to focus more tonight on prayer,

  192. may that be our desire not only tonight

  193. but throughout our week

  194. to be in constant communication with you,

  195. to hear what you have to say through your word,

  196. to be able to respond through prayer,

  197. to recognize that you are close,

  198. that you are a God who listens,

  199. that you are a God who answers.

  200. May we find great comfort

  201. and make great assurance

  202. in our relationship with you.

  203. And so, Lord, we ask that

  204. as we gather after this service

  205. to pray with one another,

  206. that we may be able to do so in sincerity,

  207. recognizing that you are a powerful God,

  208. that you are sovereign over all,

  209. and that you will answer our prayers

  210. according to your perfect will.

  211. We thank you that you are a God who loves us,

  212. that you are a God who cares,

  213. and we pray, Lord,

  214. that you be with us now

  215. as we turn to the preaching of your word.

  216. In Jesus' name we pray.

  217. Amen.

  218. Well, this evening we're going to be

  219. continuing our study

  220. in the book of 1 John.

  221. We're going to be looking specifically

  222. in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  223. starting in verse 12.

  224. And as we would have seen in recent weeks

  225. and we're going to see tonight,

  226. how John writes this book

  227. is very much like a reminder to the church.

  228. And so I wonder how many of us

  229. often get reminders from one another.

  230. I think in our day and age with technology,

  231. we're often getting reminders on our watches,

  232. on our phones, on our computers,

  233. about appointments and tasks

  234. that we have to complete.

  235. If you're married, have a spouse,

  236. they're likely one to remind you

  237. of many things,

  238. birthdays, appointments, invitations.

  239. If you have children,

  240. oftentimes be a reminder

  241. to pick up a child here,

  242. a reminder that you may be late here,

  243. a reminder that you have people

  244. coming over to your home

  245. for dinner this night.

  246. One reminder that I often get

  247. is with this Apple Watch.

  248. I've had this watch for a number of years.

  249. And when you get the watch,

  250. it comes with these programmed notifications.

  251. And so I get more reminders

  252. than I really care to oftentimes.

  253. And one of those reminders

  254. comes from a mindfulness app.

  255. I don't know if any of you

  256. have seen this before.

  257. And oftentimes throughout the day,

  258. it will ding and I'll look at it

  259. and it says,

  260. don't forget to breathe.

  261. There's other reminders that say,

  262. stand up or go for a walk.

  263. And you think,

  264. these kind of seem a little patronizing.

  265. Like, I'm not holding my breath here.

  266. Of course I'm going to be breathing.

  267. And so for some, though,

  268. they actually like those.

  269. I've disabled those alerts

  270. because I don't really find them helpful.

  271. But some people do,

  272. even though it's a basic reminder

  273. that you can kind of split up your day,

  274. that can help you to refocus in a way.

  275. That's why it's intended.

  276. These well-intended reminders

  277. that give us a greater purpose

  278. to refocus on a task,

  279. on what we have going on that day.

  280. And I think in a similar way,

  281. this is what we see

  282. in this letter of 1 John.

  283. It's a reminder to the church

  284. of who we are

  285. and how we're supposed to live.

  286. You see, John wrote this letter

  287. as a leader of a number of house churches

  288. around, likely around Ephesus.

  289. And the thing was,

  290. this is the same John

  291. who wrote the Gospel of John,

  292. who would have been and seen

  293. and experienced life with Jesus.

  294. And so now he's trying

  295. to encourage the church

  296. in light of what he has experienced,

  297. in light of what he knows,

  298. and in light of conflict

  299. that has come to the church.

  300. So he wants to remind the church

  301. of the Gospel

  302. and how we are to live

  303. in light of the Gospel.

  304. And so we actually looked

  305. at this last week.

  306. One of these things

  307. that John says,

  308. he says,

  309. I'm not writing you

  310. a new command.

  311. What I'm telling you,

  312. you would have already heard.

  313. In a text that we'll look at later

  314. in chapter 2,

  315. he says,

  316. I'm not writing you

  317. because you don't know the truth.

  318. I'm writing you

  319. because you do know the truth.

  320. And so he's reminding the church

  321. of what they ought to know.

  322. Something very simple,

  323. something very basic.

  324. A reminder to us as well

  325. to understand as he begins

  326. in this letter

  327. that God is light.

  328. And if we want to have fellowship

  329. with him,

  330. we need to walk in the light.

  331. We are to keep his commandments.

  332. We're supposed to have this love

  333. for one another

  334. as James preached last week.

  335. And what we're going to see tonight,

  336. that we're not to have

  337. this love for the world.

  338. If we love God

  339. and God is light,

  340. then we should have no love

  341. for the darkness of this world.

  342. And so let's read our passage,

  343. 1 John chapter 2,

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  344. starting in verse 12 through 17.

  345. I am writing to you, dear children,

  346. because your sins have been forgiven

  347. on account of his name.

  348. I am writing to you, fathers,

  349. because you know him

  350. who is from the beginning.

  351. I am writing to you, young men,

  352. because you have overcome the evil one.

  353. I am writing to you, dear children,

  354. because you know the Father.

  355. I am writing to you, fathers,

  356. because you know him

  357. who is from the beginning.

  358. I am writing to you, young men,

  359. because you are strong

  360. and the word of God lives in you

  361. and you have overcome the evil one.

  362. Do not love the world

  363. or anything in the world.

  364. If anyone loves the world,

  365. love for the Father is not in him.

  366. For everything in the world,

  367. the lust of the flesh,

  368. the lust of the eyes,

  369. the pride of life,

  370. comes not from the Father,

  371. but from the world.

  372. The world and its desires pass away,

  373. but whoever does the will of God

  374. lives forever.

  375. This is the word of God.

  376. Pray with me once more.

  377. God, as we hear your text

  378. and we listen to it preached,

  379. we ask, Lord,

  380. that the truth of the gospel

  381. may penetrate our hearts.

  382. So, God, we ask now,

  383. even in these moments,

  384. that we put away all distraction,

  385. that you do a work through your Spirit

  386. to soften our hearts,

  387. to open our eyes and ears

  388. to the reality of the gospel,

  389. that it may transform us

  390. for our good and your glory.

  391. We pray in Jesus' name.

  392. Amen.

  393. Now, I mentioned these reminders.

  394. Some of us find reminders helpful.

  395. Other of us may really hate reminders.

  396. Perhaps if you're a child

  397. living at home with your parents,

  398. you get reminders frequently

  399. for things like brushing your teeth

  400. or making your bed

  401. or putting your shoes on.

  402. My children are already smiling

  403. because they're used to these reminders.

  404. It's things that they know,

  405. but it's things that they need to hear.

  406. The thing they don't like to hear it

  407. is because, like most of us,

  408. we don't like being told

  409. what to do oftentimes.

  410. And so, as we look at this reminder

  411. from this letter tonight

  412. from John,

  413. he doesn't just come out

  414. and just tell us what to do.

  415. We're going to see that in this passage,

  416. but really his reminder

  417. is threefold

  418. because, first,

  419. he reminds us of our identity,

  420. who we are in Christ,

  421. what Christ has done for us.

  422. Secondly, then he reminds us

  423. what are we supposed to do

  424. in light of this reality,

  425. and thirdly,

  426. why we need to do it.

  427. And so that's really

  428. the three points

  429. that we're going to be focusing on tonight,

  430. who we are in Christ,

  431. what we are to do,

  432. and why we are to do it.

  433. And so let's consider

  434. this first point,

  435. who we are.

  436. Now, my youngest, Crawford,

  437. just turned three,

  438. and he's getting to the age

  439. where we want him

  440. to be a little more independent.

  441. We want him to do

  442. more things for himself

  443. as he grows up.

  444. But it doesn't often work

  445. if we just tell him,

  446. Crawford, do this.

  447. The best way to get him

  448. to do things

  449. is to encourage him

  450. that he's becoming a big boy.

  451. He wants to be big and strong

  452. like his brother,

  453. so we encourage him that way.

  454. You're getting so big now,

  455. you can take your plate

  456. to the dishwasher yourself.

  457. You're getting so big now,

  458. you can clean up after yourself

  459. and put away your toys.

  460. You're such a big boy now.

  461. That's much more useful

  462. in getting him to act

  463. like a big boy

  464. when we encourage him

  465. that he is one.

  466. And I think the same works for us.

  467. We are much more motivated

  468. when we are reminded

  469. what to do,

  470. not just by being told

  471. to do it,

  472. but by being reminded

  473. of our own identity.

  474. And that's what we see here

  475. in a pattern

  476. that actually repeats

  477. often throughout the Bible.

  478. When we have these commands

  479. that are given by God,

  480. it's usually preceded

  481. by a statement of some sort,

  482. reminding us of who we are.

  483. The indicative

  484. precedes the imperative.

  485. And it's both

  486. that are important.

  487. Both that are important

  488. in this passage.

  489. Because if we only stress

  490. what we're to do

  491. without remembering

  492. who we are,

  493. what does that do to us?

  494. We become reliant

  495. on the law

  496. as a means of our own

  497. assurance and approval.

  498. Instead,

  499. if we do the opposite,

  500. if we're only focused

  501. on what we're to do

  502. without who we actually are,

  503. did I say that right?

  504. Or did I do that in reverse?

  505. If we focus on

  506. what we're to do

  507. rather than who we are,

  508. we focus,

  509. we cling to the law, right?

  510. If it's the opposite,

  511. if we focus on who we are,

  512. am I getting this wrong?

  513. Am I sounding ridiculous here?

  514. If we stress only,

  515. if we have this concern

  516. for who we are,

  517. man,

  518. I'm really confusing myself here.

  519. I've never done that.

  520. If we stress what we're to do

  521. without remembering

  522. who we are,

  523. that leads us to rely

  524. on the law, right?

  525. If we stress who we are

  526. without concern

  527. for what we are to do,

  528. that leads to a rejection

  529. of the law.

  530. There we go.

  531. And so what John

  532. is saying here,

  533. that both are really important.

  534. And so he starts this phrase

  535. by saying,

  536. I'm writing to you,

  537. I'm writing to you,

  538. I'm writing to you

  539. over and over again,

  540. really in a poetic fashion

  541. to really emphasize

  542. the assurance

  543. that he wants believers

  544. to have

  545. about what we're to do

  546. based on the fact

  547. of what Christ

  548. has done for us.

  549. And so he focuses

  550. on these three groups,

  551. on children,

  552. on fathers,

  553. on young men.

  554. But really,

  555. when we think about it,

  556. I don't know

  557. if it's really

  558. that helpful

  559. to kind of distinguish

  560. these three groups.

  561. Some people say,

  562. well, it's kind of

  563. he's talking to different stages

  564. of spiritual maturity.

  565. I don't know

  566. if that's really the case here.

  567. Because when he talks

  568. about little children,

  569. this isn't the only time

  570. he says in this letter,

  571. seven times he talks

  572. about little children.

  573. Each time,

  574. he's referring to believers

  575. in general.

  576. When he speaks

  577. to young men

  578. and to fathers,

  579. what's true of one

  580. is true of the other group

  581. as well.

  582. These are not

  583. mutually exclusive

  584. reminders here.

  585. And so it's kind of like

  586. if you've heard

  587. like an announcement,

  588. if you've been

  589. at a big event

  590. or a performance

  591. of some sort,

  592. and someone gets

  593. on the loudspeakers

  594. and says,

  595. ladies and gentlemen,

  596. boys and girls,

  597. children of all ages.

  598. Right?

  599. They could have just said

  600. everybody who's here.

  601. Right?

  602. But they're adding

  603. a bit of flourish

  604. to what they're saying.

  605. I think John is doing

  606. a very similar thing here.

  607. In this poetic flourish,

  608. he's addressing

  609. everyone in the church.

  610. Young and old,

  611. mature Christians,

  612. those who are new

  613. to the faith,

  614. and he's reminding them

  615. of this.

  616. Your sins are forgiven.

  617. You know him

  618. who is from the beginning.

  619. You have overcome

  620. the evil one.

  621. You know the Father.

  622. Again, you know him

  623. who is from the beginning.

  624. You are strong.

  625. The word of God

  626. is in you.

  627. And I'm going to say it again.

  628. You have overcome

  629. the evil one.

  630. Is this not a good

  631. reminder to hear?

  632. We can read this

  633. and think that

  634. John is just talking

  635. to this New Testament church

  636. without really taking it

  637. to heart ourselves.

  638. But this is true

  639. for you and me

  640. if we are believers.

  641. And so it's good

  642. for that reminder

  643. to sink in.

  644. If we're here tonight

  645. and we feel heavy

  646. and burdened

  647. by sin in our lives,

  648. know this,

  649. that your sin

  650. is forgiven.

  651. If you feel

  652. spiritually alone

  653. and isolated,

  654. be encouraged

  655. that you know

  656. the Father

  657. and his word

  658. is in you.

  659. If you are spiritually

  660. weak

  661. and tired

  662. and broken,

  663. know that you are

  664. strong in Christ.

  665. That you have overcome

  666. the evil one.

  667. And so John

  668. is not saying this

  669. to motivate the church

  670. to earn this

  671. in any way,

  672. to prove themselves

  673. so that this may be true.

  674. He's not hoping

  675. that this may become

  676. true for the church.

  677. He's speaking

  678. as though this

  679. is a current reality

  680. for those who are

  681. in Christ.

  682. And so we can take heart

  683. and let this be

  684. our comfort

  685. and our assurance

  686. knowing what Christ

  687. has already done

  688. for us.

  689. And it's because

  690. we know

  691. that sense of identity

  692. that we can then

  693. listen to this

  694. second point,

  695. this second reminder

  696. because

  697. when we know

  698. who we are,

  699. it makes us

  700. much more receptive

  701. to listen

  702. to what we are to do.

  703. Verse 15,

  704. do not love the world

  705. or the things

  706. in the world.

  707. If anyone loves

  708. the world,

  709. the love for the Father

  710. is not in them.

  711. Now immediately

  712. this may raise

  713. some red flags

  714. for some.

  715. those outside

  716. the church

  717. may try to use

  718. this verse

  719. in a weaponized

  720. fashion

  721. to think,

  722. look,

  723. these Christians

  724. they're just

  725. a bunch of

  726. self-righteous

  727. judgmental people

  728. who hate everyone

  729. who's not like them.

  730. Certainly this isn't

  731. what John is saying

  732. here.

  733. But even for Christians

  734. this may confuse us

  735. because we've heard

  736. other verses

  737. in the Bible,

  738. right?

  739. John 3, 16,

  740. for God so loved

  741. the world

  742. that he gave

  743. his only son.

  744. So if God

  745. loves the world

  746. why would he command

  747. us to not love

  748. the world?

  749. How can we reconcile

  750. these two things?

  751. I think it's important

  752. that we define

  753. some terms here

  754. that we understand

  755. what John is trying

  756. to say.

  757. We need to understand

  758. what he's talking

  759. about when he says

  760. world and understand

  761. what he's talking

  762. about when he says

  763. love.

  764. My dad always

  765. tells a story

  766. when he,

  767. years ago

  768. when he was

  769. starting the practice

  770. of law,

  771. one of his law

  772. partners was doing

  773. some wills

  774. for this couple

  775. and he had completed

  776. the wills

  777. and he had a secretary

  778. wanted to bring

  779. them back in

  780. so his secretary

  781. had this thick

  782. southern accent

  783. called this couple

  784. and said your wheels

  785. are done

  786. and they had actually

  787. just taken their car

  788. to the body shop

  789. to get new tires

  790. on their car

  791. and so when they

  792. heard that message

  793. your wheels are done

  794. they thought they said

  795. your wheels are done

  796. and so they went

  797. to the auto body shop

  798. to pick up their car

  799. even though they got

  800. there and realized

  801. no one had called

  802. and their wheels

  803. were not done

  804. before they realized

  805. their mistake

  806. that there was

  807. the secretary

  808. saying your wills

  809. are done

  810. not your wheels

  811. are done

  812. and so in the same way

  813. I think it's

  814. very important

  815. that we understand

  816. what's being communicated

  817. here when we think

  818. about this word world

  819. and we think about

  820. this word love

  821. when the Bible

  822. speaks of this word

  823. world

  824. it speaks of it

  825. in two different ways

  826. in different passages

  827. on the one hand

  828. this word world

  829. it can mean

  830. this physical

  831. material world

  832. and so we have

  833. some religions

  834. maybe even some

  835. within Christianity

  836. who want to think

  837. that the physical world

  838. is bad

  839. they hold it in contrast

  840. to the spiritual world

  841. and so they want

  842. nothing to do

  843. with the physical world

  844. you might have heard

  845. of asceticism before

  846. it's these people

  847. that deny themselves

  848. any worldly pleasure

  849. they want to leave society

  850. be separated

  851. from secular world

  852. go live in a commune

  853. in the desert somewhere

  854. that's not what Paul

  855. is saying here

  856. in fact that's a harmful

  857. way of thinking

  858. about the physical world

  859. because we recognize

  860. that God created

  861. the physical world

  862. and he called it good

  863. and he promises

  864. to come again

  865. he has promised

  866. to redeem the world

  867. this physical world

  868. from the effects

  869. of sin

  870. and so this verse

  871. it's not saying

  872. reject the physical world

  873. reject this created world

  874. as if it's totally evil

  875. instead John is speaking

  876. in a different way

  877. in this context

  878. he speaks of the world

  879. as this whole way of life

  880. resulting from the fall

  881. of humanity

  882. he's speaking of

  883. a whole value system

  884. of attitudes

  885. which are opposed to God

  886. and so that's what

  887. we mean by world

  888. what does he mean

  889. by this phrase love

  890. when John is using love here

  891. he's not using

  892. the same word

  893. or the expression

  894. as when we say

  895. that God loved the world

  896. or God loved his creation

  897. with a love in which

  898. he's going to rescue humanity

  899. here when John talks

  900. about this love

  901. he's talking about

  902. more of an attraction

  903. that we have

  904. to something

  905. that we want to enjoy

  906. apart from God

  907. and so when we combine

  908. these understanding

  909. of world and love

  910. what we see in John 3.16

  911. is actually very different

  912. from what we see

  913. in 1 John 2

  914. so we're not confused

  915. John 3.16

  916. John is talking about

  917. God's divine love

  918. divine selfless love

  919. of redemption

  920. for his creation

  921. in their passage tonight

  922. John is talking about

  923. this humanly selfish love

  924. of participation

  925. in the evil things

  926. of this fallen world

  927. and so he goes on

  928. to give us a definition

  929. of this world

  930. really this worldliness

  931. that is all around us

  932. he says in verse 16

  933. for everything in the world

  934. the lust of the flesh

  935. the lust of the eyes

  936. the pride of life

  937. comes not from the father

  938. but from the world

  939. and so what does

  940. this description mean

  941. when we hear this word lust

  942. I think in modern times

  943. we often just

  944. automatically relate it

  945. to the sexual desires

  946. that humans have

  947. but I think actually

  948. when we look at this word

  949. in the Greek

  950. it has a much more

  951. broad sense

  952. of this intense

  953. passionate longing

  954. for anything

  955. and most times

  956. when it's talked about

  957. in the Bible

  958. it's in a negative connotation

  959. so here it's this

  960. it's this passionate

  961. intense longing

  962. for the flesh

  963. in John 6

  964. Jesus is talking

  965. to some Jewish leaders

  966. and he's talking

  967. about how they are

  968. to have life

  969. and saying

  970. you have to eat

  971. my flesh

  972. and drink my blood

  973. obviously we recognize

  974. that he's foreshadowing

  975. his own crucifixion here

  976. but these religious leaders

  977. even his own disciples

  978. were confused

  979. and really grossed out

  980. by what he was saying

  981. it was hard for them

  982. to understand

  983. and so he goes

  984. to his disciples

  985. and says

  986. does this offend you?

  987. it is the spirit

  988. who gives life

  989. and the flesh

  990. is no help at all

  991. it is only through

  992. the spirit

  993. that we can accept

  994. Christ as Savior

  995. the flesh

  996. only wants to reject him

  997. and so this desire

  998. of the flesh

  999. this lust of the flesh

  1000. is this longing

  1001. for anything

  1002. contrary to God

  1003. likewise

  1004. in this lust

  1005. of the eyes

  1006. it's not simply

  1007. talking again

  1008. about sexual desire

  1009. though that's

  1010. included in this

  1011. but it's referring

  1012. to this

  1013. short-sighted desire

  1014. for what's

  1015. in front of us

  1016. and so maybe

  1017. some of us

  1018. have been a victim

  1019. of false advertising

  1020. in some way

  1021. we see something

  1022. on our phones

  1023. or on the computer

  1024. or on the television

  1025. something that we want

  1026. that looks really attractive

  1027. maybe something to eat

  1028. or something to buy

  1029. and we get it

  1030. and we realize

1031. that's not nearly as good

  1032. as I thought

1033. it was going to be

1034. it's what we see here

1035. the lust of the eyes

  1036. is when we are

  1037. captivated

  1038. by this

  1039. outward appearance

  1040. of something

  1041. without really assessing

  1042. its real true value

  1043. especially in light

  1044. of eternity

  1045. and so things like

  1046. this misplaced

  1047. sexual desire

  1048. this lust for

  1049. possessions

  1050. and comforts

  1051. in this world

  1052. that won't actually

  1053. provide any sort

  1054. of lasting satisfaction

  1055. lastly here

  1056. this pride of life

  1057. it's this confidence

  1058. that we have

  1059. in our own resources

  1060. in our own wealth

  1061. in our own intellect

  1062. in our own success

1063. things that set us up

1064. so that we can be

  1065. self-reliant

  1066. and self-sufficient

  1067. forgetting our need

  1068. to depend

  1069. and rely on God

1070. and so when we combine

  1071. these descriptions together

  1072. to get a better

  1073. understanding

  1074. of what this worldliness

  1075. looks like

  1076. it's really this

  1077. desire for earthly things

  1078. that we don't have

  1079. and a pride

  1080. in earthly things

  1081. that we do have

  1082. and in either case

  1083. this pushes us

  1084. further and further away

  1085. from our Heavenly Father

1086. and so we need to ask

  1087. does this describe us

1088. do we have these cravings

  1089. for the world

  1090. do these

  1091. how do these tendencies

  1092. reveal themselves

  1093. in the Christian life

  1094. I think there's really

  1095. two different ways

  1096. of thinking about it

  1097. in one way

  1098. we may view Christianity

1099. as more of an accessory

  1100. because we focus

1101. so much of our time

  1102. and our energy

  1103. on our work

  1104. on our school

  1105. on our family

  1106. we're seeking wealth

  1107. and health

  1108. and comfort

  1109. and prosperity

1110. and we want Christianity too

1111. but it kind of just serves

1112. as the cherry on top

  1113. so to speak

  1114. to our otherwise

  1115. carefully curated lives

  1116. I'll come to church

  1117. on Sunday

  1118. I'll volunteer

  1119. when I can

  1120. but you know what

1121. the rest of the week

  1122. is really about me

  1123. achieving my goals

  1124. for my life

  1125. the other way

  1126. of looking at it

  1127. maybe you think

  1128. well it's maybe

  1129. think of yourself

1130. in a slightly better light

  1131. you would say

  1132. that your relationship

  1133. with God

  1134. is foundational

  1135. you want your faith

  1136. to shape your life

  1137. and your priorities

  1138. but if we're really

  1139. honest with ourselves

  1140. sometimes

  1141. we recognize that

  1142. this Christian life

  1143. is hard

  1144. and

  1145. the cravings

  1146. that we have

  1147. the sense

  1148. that we thought

  1149. that a Christian life

  1150. would gratify us

1151. maybe fails to live up

  1152. to expectation

1153. and so we feel like

1154. we have to top up

  1155. our Christian life

  1156. somehow

1157. we try to pile on

  1158. some of the pleasures

  1159. of the world

1160. so that we may have

  1161. a more fulfilled life

  1162. and this can happen

  1163. in really unassuming ways

  1164. we don't get up

  1165. in the morning

  1166. and think

  1167. what are the ways

1168. that I'm going to sin today

  1169. to be distracted

1170. from the way of God

1171. but as the day goes on

  1172. there are things

1173. that come before our eyes

  1174. there are things

  1175. that turn our heart

  1176. and our mind

  1177. away from God

  1178. as we seek satisfaction

  1179. elsewhere

  1180. and so I wondered

  1181. if either of these

  1182. scenarios describe you

  1183. do we have these

  1184. desires for things

  1185. apart from God

  1186. and it's not that

  1187. these desires

  1188. are necessarily

  1189. bad desires

1190. a passion for your family

1191. a passion for your work

  1192. they're good things

  1193. but it's when

  1194. these passions

  1195. these secondary things

  1196. become primary

  1197. that ultimately

  1198. lead us

  1199. away from God

  1200. and so John

  1201. is reminding us here

  1202. to evaluate

  1203. our whole value system

  1204. do we find

  1205. our satisfaction

  1206. in the things

  1207. of this world

  1208. or in God

  1209. our deepest

  1210. desires

  1211. in creating

  1212. this own

  1213. our own little

  1214. earthly kingdom

  1215. or do we care

  1216. more about

  1217. Christ's eternal

  1218. kingdom

  1219. that brings us

  1220. to our final point

  1221. we've looked at

  1222. who we are

  1223. and what we're

  1224. to do

  1225. and John

  1226. reminds us

  1227. of why we are

  1228. to do it

  1229. verse 16 and 17

  1230. for everything

  1231. in the world

1232. the lust of the flesh

1233. the lust of the eyes

  1234. the pride of life

  1235. comes not from the

  1236. Father

  1237. but from the world

  1238. the world

  1239. and its desires

  1240. pass away

  1241. but whoever

  1242. does the will

  1243. of God

  1244. lives forever

  1245. John is giving us

  1246. two reasons here

  1247. why we are not

  1248. to love the world

  1249. first love for the

  1250. world is incompatible

  1251. with love for God

  1252. and secondly

  1253. love

  1254. this world

  1255. is temporary

  1256. while God

  1257. and his kingdom

  1258. are eternal

  1259. and so let's look

  1260. at each of them

  1261. just briefly

  1262. this first one

  1263. love for the world

  1264. is not compatible

  1265. with love for God

  1266. I don't know

  1267. if many of you

  1268. have been following

  1269. the news

  1270. from the hurricane

  1271. Helene

  1272. that came through

  1273. the states

  1274. Rachel and I

  1275. have been paying

  1276. particular attention

  1277. to it because

  1278. it came right

  1279. through our town

  1280. where we used

  1281. to live

  1282. in Greenville

  1283. South Carolina

  1284. and up into

  1285. the mountains

  1286. of North Carolina

  1287. and it was devastating

  1288. what was done

  1289. we've been chatting

  1290. with neighbors

  1291. our own neighborhood

  1292. which had just

  1293. these huge oak trees

  1294. they're still without

  1295. power eight days

  1296. after the storm

  1297. one of my friends

  1298. was saying

  1299. that was our neighbor

  1300. saying there's at least

  1301. ten houses

  1302. with trees

  1303. right on the houses

  1304. you go up through

  1305. Greenville

  1306. into the mountains

  1307. these little towns

1308. where we used to drive

  1309. and hike

  1310. have been totally

  1311. wiped off the map

  1312. mudslides

  1313. taking houses away

  1314. rivers that have

  1315. completely taken roads

  1316. that where they are

  1317. there no more

1318. people that are coming in

  1319. are having to come

  1320. by helicopter

1321. or hike through the woods

  1322. because there's no

  1323. other way in

  1324. total devastation

  1325. from these rains

  1326. and winds

1327. and I think the same

  1328. can be true

  1329. of our hearts

  1330. when love

  1331. for the world

  1332. and our desires

  1333. for the flesh

  1334. enter our heart

  1335. it wants to wipe

  1336. out every other desire

  1337. it will erode

  1338. and destroy

  1339. our hearts

  1340. leaving no place

  1341. for the love

  1342. of God to dwell

1343. it says in James 4

  1344. 4

  1345. don't you know

  1346. that friendship

  1347. with the world

  1348. means enmity

  1349. against God

  1350. therefore anyone

  1351. who chooses

  1352. to be a friend

  1353. of the world

  1354. becomes an enemy

  1355. of God

  1356. see a love

  1357. for the father

  1358. and a love

  1359. for the world

  1360. can't coexist

  1361. and so we need

  1362. to ask ourselves

  1363. are we focused

  1364. on our own success

  1365. on our own comforts

  1366. on our own collection

  1367. of possessions

  1368. or are we striving

  1369. that our lives

  1370. may be lived

  1371. in conformity

  1372. with the will

  1373. of God

  1374. do we delight

  1375. in his law

  1376. do we long

  1377. to be in relationship

  1378. with him

  1379. are we passionate

  1380. about Christ

  1381. and his coming

  1382. kingdom

  1383. Paul says

  1384. in Galatians 6

  1385. 14

  1386. may I never

  1387. boast

  1388. except in the

  1389. cross of our

  1390. Lord Jesus Christ

  1391. through which the

  1392. world has been

  1393. crucified to me

  1394. and I to the

  1395. world

  1396. like Paul

  1397. are we willing

  1398. to die

  1399. to our worldly

  1400. desires

  1401. in order that

  1402. Christ may live

  1403. in us

  1404. so that brings us

  1405. to our second

  1406. and final reason

  1407. here

  1408. why we are not

  1409. to love the world

  1410. we don't love the

  1411. world

  1412. because it's

  1413. temporary

  1414. Stephen read for us

  1415. from Ecclesiastes

  1416. a book that talks

  1417. frequently about

  1418. the vanity of life

  1419. how the things

  1420. of this life

  1421. are not going

  1422. to last

  1423. and they're not

  1424. going to fulfill

  1425. our desires

  1426. Jesus has this

  1427. same message

  1428. in Matthew 6

  1429. he says

  1430. don't stow up

  1431. for yourself

  1432. treasures on earth

  1433. where moth

  1434. and vermin

  1435. destroy

  1436. where thieves

  1437. break in

  1438. and steal

  1439. but store up

  1440. for yourself

  1441. treasures in heaven

  1442. where moths

  1443. and vermin

  1444. do not destroy

  1445. where thieves

  1446. do not break

  1447. in and steal

  1448. for where your

  1449. treasure is

  1450. there your heart

  1451. will be also

  1452. if you knew

  1453. of a company

  1454. that was about

  1455. to go bankrupt

  1456. that they were

  1457. about to go

  1458. out of business

  1459. would you invest

  1460. in that company

  1461. of course not

1462. so why in the world

  1463. are we so willing

  1464. to invest our time

  1465. and our energy

  1466. and our money

  1467. and our own love

  1468. and affection

1469. for things in this world

  1470. that will not last

  1471. John who wrote

  1472. this letter

  1473. is the same

  1474. John who writes

  1475. the book of Revelation

  1476. where he talks

  1477. about Christ

  1478. coming again

  1479. and establishing

  1480. a new heaven

  1481. and a new earth

  1482. that first heaven

  1483. and the first earth

  1484. will pass away

  1485. and God will once

  1486. again dwell

  1487. with his people

  1488. and so again

  1489. we ask ourselves

  1490. do we long

  1491. for the temporary

  1492. pleasures of this world

  1493. are we content

  1494. with investing

  1495. our time and energy

  1496. in the fleeting things

  1497. in this world

  1498. that will not last

  1499. and will not satisfy

  1500. or we desire

  1501. to follow God's will

1502. that leads to eternal life

  1503. do we long

  1504. for Christ's return

  1505. when he will rule

  1506. and reign forever

  1507. this is a very

  1508. very simple reminder

  1509. that John gives

  1510. the church

  1511. reminding us

  1512. of who we are

1513. and what we're to do

1514. and why we're to do it

  1515. a simple reminder

  1516. with eternal implications

1517. and so if you are

  1518. in Christ

  1519. brother and sister

  1520. may this reminder

  1521. be taken to heart

  1522. that we may examine

  1523. the desires

  1524. of our heart

1525. to see whether they lead us

  1526. to God

  1527. or away from him

1528. may it be our desire

1529. to follow after his will

  1530. for our good

  1531. and his glory

1532. and if this doesn't define you

1533. if you are not a believer

  1534. John is actually

  1535. not writing to you

  1536. specifically in this passage

  1537. we so often times

  1538. in our lives

  1539. want to judge

  1540. the outside world

  1541. for not living

  1542. as Christians should

  1543. why should we expect

  1544. that they would

1545. because they do not have

  1546. an identity in Christ

1547. but what we do see

  1548. is an invitation

1549. an invitation to the lost

  1550. an invitation to those

1551. who are not in Christ

  1552. to come

  1553. to find your identity

  1554. in him

  1555. to recognize

  1556. that the things

  1557. of this world

  1558. are worthless

  1559. they will not last

  1560. but God

  1561. and his kingdom

  1562. will

  1563. and that gives us

  1564. reason to live

  1565. for him

  1566. to receive his love

1567. that he may be glorified

1568. may that be our prayer

  1569. let's pray together

  1570. Lord we thank you

  1571. that you are

  1572. a good God

  1573. who loves us

  1574. thank you

  1575. that you are eternal

  1576. that your kingdom

  1577. will never end

1578. and so may it be

  1579. our desire

  1580. and our passion

  1581. to see your kingdom

  1582. come

  1583. may we long

  1584. for your return

1585. and may we put aside

1586. the desires of the flesh

  1587. that distract us

  1588. that cause us

  1589. to wander

  1590. that take us away

  1591. from you

  1592. may we find

  1593. great assurance

  1594. in what you have

  1595. done for us

  1596. and our identity

  1597. in you

  1598. may you deepen

  1599. our love

  1600. for you

  1601. that we may desire

  1602. to live for you

  1603. and we pray this

  1604. in Jesus name

  1605. amen

1606. will you stand with me

  1607. for the singing

  1608. of our final psalm

  1609. our final psalm

  1610. Psalm 93

  1611. the Lord reigns

  1612. please

  1613. the Lord is king

  1614. his throne

  1615. endures

  1616. majestic

  1617. in his height

  1618. the Lord is robed

  1619. in majesty

  1620. and armed with strength

  1621. and might

  1622. the world is founded

  1623. firm and sure

  1624. removed it cannot be

  1625. your throne is strong

  1626. and you are gone

  1627. from all eternity

  1628. the seas

  1629. O Lord

  1630. have lifted up

  1631. they lifted up

  1632. their voice

  1633. the seas

  1634. have lifted up

  1635. their waves

  1636. and made

  1637. a mighty

  1638. noise

  1639. the Lord

  1640. in throne

  1641. their high

  1642. is strong

  1643. or powerful

  1644. receive

  1645. and thunder

  1646. up

  1647. the ocean

  1648. waves

  1649. or breakers

  1650. of the sea

  1651. your royal

  1652. statutes

  1653. Lord

  1654. stand firm

  1655. and changing

  1656. is your word

  1657. and holiness

  1658. adores your eyes

  1659. horrendous

  1660. days

  1661. O Lord

  1662. Lord

  1663. a reminder for you

  1664. to stay after

  1665. if you can

  1666. that we'll have

  1667. a few minutes

  1668. of just sharing time

  1669. with one another

1670. and we'll gather back up

  1671. in about ten minutes

  1672. for some group prayer

1673. now receive this good word

  1674. this benediction

  1675. from the Lord

  1676. now may the God

  1677. of peace

  1678. who brought again

  1679. from the dead

  1680. our Lord Jesus

  1681. the great shepherd

  1682. of the sheep

  1683. by the blood

  1684. of the eternal covenant

  1685. equip you with

  1686. everything good

  1687. that you may do

  1688. his will

  1689. working in us

  1690. that which is pleasing

  1691. in his sight

  1692. through Jesus Christ

  1693. to him be glory

  1694. forever and ever

  1695. Amen
