  1. Just to bow your heads in prayer for a moment, please.

  2. Father, we, Father, most of the time we're not really aware of this,

  3. but sometimes your word or your Holy Spirit makes clear to us that,

  4. Father, we're like a bundle of contradictory things.

  5. You know, we want to, you know, we easily see ourselves as the victim,

  6. and then the very next moment we see ourselves as triumphing,

  7. and maybe you want to have lots of money one moment,

  8. and another moment we want to be just very, very generous and live simple lives,

  9. and the next minute we want fame,

  10. and then the other moment we just want to be left alone,

  11. and some moments, Father, we want you to act sort of almost like a divine puppeteer

  12. and just make everything move around to fix our problems,

  13. and then the next moment we want you to not have any type of control over our lives,

  14. and Father, we are not always aware of just how unruly we are

  15. and contradictory we are,

  16. but, Father, we rejoice and just marvel that you see us perfectly,

  17. and still you love us,

  18. and still your Son died on the cross for us.

  19. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would so bring the gospel home,

  20. the beautiful way, Father, that you continually invite us to,

  21. that that beautiful way, Father, would become more and more real to our hearts,

  22. that it might structure and form and shape and propel and draw us

  23. in terms of how we live our day-to-day lives

  24. until that day, Father, when we, your children, see you face to face.

  25. So, Father, do that gentle but powerful work of your Holy Spirit in our lives,

  26. and we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. Please be seated.

  30. Excuse me, I seem to have something stuck in my throat.

  31. Hopefully, it'll just clear itself up.

  32. So, that was quite a scripture text.

  33. If you're wondering why we would talk a text about that describes other people's religions

  34. as being abominations, as forbidding your sons and daughters to marry other people,

  35. that seems to talk about there being a holy race, and it's terrible

  36. if anybody who's not part of that holy race becomes part of your family.

  37. It's not because I have a weird personality,

  38. and I intentionally go looking for weird texts like that to speak on.

  39. Like, I'm actually very Canadian, and I, you know, my wife and the staff can tell me

  40. that when I first read this text again in preparation for,

  41. I mean, I'd read it many, many times as part of my daily Bible reading,

  42. but when I first read it, knowing that I was going to preach on it,

  43. I was a bit appalled by it.

  44. And I said to people, you need to pray for me.

  45. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to say about a text like this.

  46. It's really, really quite something.

  47. So, but the reason we do it is that one of the things we want to do here

  48. is we want to, Paul in Acts chapter 20 says he wants to declare the whole counsel of God.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  49. And that's what we want to do here at this church,

  50. and one of the ways that we do this is by preaching through books in the Bible,

  51. Old Testament, New Testament.

  52. And so what that means is that we preach,

  53. sometimes we have to look at texts which are just very difficult.

  54. And so actually, if you're sort of trying to figure out the Christian faith,

  55. or maybe you're trying to figure out like whether you should stay a Christian

  56. or whether you should join and become a Christian,

  57. in some ways we're the perfect church for you

  58. because, you know, if you sign a contract or a deal somewhere,

  59. and then you find out in the small print that there's these rules

  60. that you didn't know about and now you're sort of screwed,

  61. we look at the fine print.

  62. And we don't sort of hide from these uncomfortable things

  63. and things which sort of go against the grain of Canadians and how we think.

  64. So let's look at the text.

  65. And so what I'm going to do, it's a bit different from how I normally preach.

  66. I'm going to read, again, all of chapter 9,

  67. and I'll just point out a couple of very, very small things.

  68. And then, but because the issues of intermarriage and abominations

  69. and the holy race and other things

  70. are all sort of intermingled throughout the whole thing,

  71. you know, normally I would read a couple of verses, explain it,

  72. a couple of verses, explain it.

  73. I think what I need to do is we're just going to look at it

  74. so you can see that we're not hiding from anything.

  75. And one of the things I would suggest to you,

  76. if you have little notes or something,

  77. is make a note.

  78. Okay, is George going to talk about this?

  79. Okay, is he going to talk about this?

  80. And if I don't in the sermon sort of address these big issues,

  81. make sure you, if you're online, send me an email.

  82. If you're here, make sure you ask me at the end of the service.

  83. But let's sort of look at the text.

  84. I'm not going to read chapter 10.

  85. It's 44 verses.

  86. It's the continuation of the story.

  87. But just to give you, in a sense,

  88. the summary of what happens in chapter 10.

  89. And actually, let's read the text,

  90. and I'll give you the summary.

  91. And then we'll sort of try to figure out

  92. what's going on in this text.

  93. And just so you know,

  94. a very typical way out of a text like this

  95. is to say, oh, well, that's just the Old Testament.

  96. And they're just sort of hard and judgmental,

  97. and we're Christians,

  98. and that's not what the New Testament is like.

  99. And I'm not going to say that.

  100. Because actually, that's not true.

  101. And I'm not going to repudiate the text,

  102. and I'm not going to do tap dancing around the text.

  103. Believe it or not, I think this text,

  104. in a very stark way,

  105. which grabs our attention,

  106. brings before us the importance

  107. of embracing the beautiful vision of the Bible.

  108. If we get over our fears about the text,

  109. I think the text is calling us

  110. to embrace a beautiful vision

  111. and help us know what it means

  112. to embrace this beautiful vision

  113. and move forward to life.

  114. Now you're really worried.

  115. Is George going to say racism

  116. and all his beautiful vision?

  117. No, I'm not.

  118. Let's look at what it says.

  119. So it's Ezra chapter 9,

    Ezra 9 chapter mention

  120. and here's how it begins.

  121. After these things had been done,

  122. now what that means is,

  123. if you go back and you read

  124. all of the book of Ezra,

  125. which is a good thing to do,

  126. about 80 years earlier,

  127. after the nation of Israel

  128. had been taken away into captivity,

  129. there's basically no Jewish people left

  130. in what the Jewish people call the promised land,

  131. or we would now call Israel.

  132. And they'd been gone for over like 140 years,

  133. 130 years.

  134. And then about 80 years earlier,

  135. a large group,

  136. a fairly large group of people

  137. returned from exile.

  138. And in chapters 1 to 6,

  139. it describes what happened

  140. sort of in the first 20 years

  141. of them coming back.

  142. And then between chapter 6 and chapter 7,

  143. there's almost 60 years of sort of silence.

  144. And then Ezra leaves a very small group of people

  145. to come back from exile.

  146. And so in chapter 9 here,

  147. it's five months after what we talked about

  148. in chapter 7 and 8.

  149. So it's about five months later,

  150. and Ezra's been given the task

  151. by the pagan emperor of Persia

  152. to teach the Torah,

  153. the Tanakh,

  154. and to make it the law of the region.

  155. And that's his job.

  156. So now it's about five months later,

  157. and we'll take it up again.

  158. And after these things had been done,

  159. the officials approached me

  160. and said,

  161. the people of Israel

  162. and the priests and the Levites

  163. have not separated themselves

  164. from the peoples of the lands

  165. with their abominations.

  166. If you're doing little pins

  167. or little marks,

  168. put a mark there.

  169. Make sure I come back

  170. and talk about it.

  171. Why is it that God wants,

  172. that Ezra thinks God wants them

  173. to separate from the people of the land

  174. and to describe what they do

  175. as abominations?

  176. And then it mentions

  177. from the Canaanites,

  178. the Hittites,

  179. the Perizzites,

  180. the Jebusites,

  181. the Ammonites,

  182. the Moabites,

  183. the Egyptians,

  184. and the Amorites.

  185. Now, just to be clear,

  186. so the first thing is

  187. the officials come

  188. and tell Ezra this,

  189. and it's not that

  190. they've just not separated,

  191. but they're actually doing it.

  192. So they've taken up

  193. what Ezra's calling

  194. an abomination.

  195. The things that

  196. the neighboring nations do,

  197. Ezra describes

  198. as abominations

  199. and he discovers

  200. that there's a significant part

  201. of the community

  202. which are doing them.

  203. Then verse 2,

  204. and this is sort of now

  205. describing a little bit

  206. about the means

  207. by which this,

  208. a key aspect

  209. of how this has come about.

  210. Verse 2,

  211. for they have taken

  212. some of their daughters,

  213. that's the Canaanites,

  214. et cetera,

  215. to be wives for themselves

  216. and for their sons,

  217. so that the holy race

  218. has mixed itself

  219. with the peoples

  220. of the lands.

  221. And in this faithlessness,

  222. the hand of the officials

  223. and the chief men

  224. has been foremost.

  225. Now, there's that phrase,

  226. the holy race,

  227. and for many of us

  228. reading this today,

  229. it sounds like

  230. the Deep South

  231. and slavery

  232. in the United States.

  233. It sounds like apartheid.

  234. It sounds like

  235. what the Nazis did

  236. by looking for

  237. a small trace

  238. of Jewish blood.

  239. It sounds like

  240. these racial purity movements

  241. and it's a

  242. pretty stark thing.

  243. So what does Ezra do?

  244. So the people

  245. have told him this.

  246. Some of the leaders

  247. have come and told him this.

  248. It might very well be

  249. that because he's been there

  250. for five months

  251. and been teaching the Torah,

  252. they now realize,

  253. some of them,

  254. that there's been things

  255. going on in the Torah

  256. and the Tanakh forbid.

  257. So how does Ezra respond?

  258. And he responds

  259. in a very interesting way.

  260. He doesn't repudiate it

  261. or tell them

  262. that he's wrong,

  263. but he also doesn't act

  264. in a judgmental way.

  265. He's going to identify

  266. with the people,

  267. but he's going to identify

  268. with them by mourning

  269. and grieving.

  270. Listen to what it says,

  271. verse 3.

  272. As soon as I heard this,

  273. I tore my garment

  274. and my cloak

  275. and pulled hair

  276. from my head

  277. and beard

  278. and sat appalled.

  279. Now just pause.

  280. We all know

  281. that there's different,

  282. you know,

  283. because we have the media now,

  284. we can see how grief works

  285. in different countries

  286. and, you know,

  287. like here in Canada,

  288. like most people

  289. now don't even have

  290. funerals anymore.

  291. We don't really,

  292. and a lot of our grief now

  293. in Canada,

  294. it's done very private

  295. and it's often medicated.

  296. This is a very,

  297. some people in the world,

  298. they're very demonstrative

  299. emotionally

  300. about their grieving

  301. and mourning

  302. and that's what's going on here.

  303. The Bible's not telling us

  304. that we should become like this,

  305. but it's showing

  306. how they grieved

  307. and that's what he's doing.

  308. Verse 4,

  309. and here's a really

  310. interesting phrase,

  311. you know that,

  312. that old spiritual,

  313. it causes me to tremble,

  314. tremble, tremble.

  315. That's where they get this from.

  316. The next verse,

  317. then all who trembled

  318. at the words of God,

  319. it causes me to tremble,

  320. tremble, tremble.

  321. Then all who trembled

  322. at the words of God,

  323. the God of Israel,

  324. because of the faithfulness,

  325. sorry,

  326. then all who trembled

  327. at the words

  328. of the God of Israel

  329. because of the faithlessness

  330. of the returned exiles,

  331. gathered around me

  332. while I sat appalled

  333. until the evening sacrifice.

  334. And at the evening sacrifice,

  335. I arose from my fasting

  336. with my garment

  337. and my cloak torn

  338. and fell upon my knees

  339. and spread out my hands

  340. to the Lord my God,

  341. saying,

  342. now just,

  343. it's very interesting,

  344. you know,

  345. that he's appalled.

  346. But as you're going to see

  347. and what he's just done

  348. is in a sense

  349. he sees himself

  350. as needing to grieve

  351. and mourn for the nation.

  352. Now,

  353. this is still problematic

  354. if it's grieving

  355. that they're not racist enough.

  356. Obviously,

  357. that makes it even worse,

  358. right?

  359. But he's grieving

  360. and others are grieving

  361. and now he prays.

  362. Like,

  363. he doesn't immediately

  364. take up a sword

  365. and go starting killing people.

  366. He doesn't do anything like that.

  367. He grieves

  368. and he prays.

  369. And you'll notice

  370. in the words of the prayer,

  371. there's still problematic

  372. things in them

  373. for us Canadians,

  374. but he constantly identifies

  375. with the people.

  376. So here's how he prays.

  377. Verse 6,

  378. Notice the R language,

  379. not these people,

  380. but R.

  381. Verse 7,

  382. We have been in great guilt

  383. and for our iniquities,

  384. we, our kings,

  385. and our priests

  386. have been given into the hand

  387. of the kings of the lands

  388. to the sword,

  389. to captivity,

  390. to plundering,

  391. and utter shame

  392. as it is today.

  393. Now,

  394. just sort of pause here

  395. for a second.

  396. Ezra understands,

  397. and this is a problematic thing

  398. for lots of Canadians,

  399. that what has happened

  400. to them,

  401. they're having their city destroyed,

  402. the people carried away,

  403. that that is all God's judgment.

  404. I mean,

  405. on one level,

  406. Nebuchadnezzar just did it

  407. because he wanted

  408. a bigger empire

  409. and he wanted more tax revenues.

  410. But Ezra understands

  411. that what's happened

  412. is actually God's judgment.

  413. And I'm not going to be able

  414. to talk about God's judgment.

  415. I mean,

  416. I'm going to have enough

  417. just trying to talk

  418. about abominations and racism

  419. without talking about

  420. God's judgment,

  421. but it's a key part

  422. of his prayer.

  423. It's not that he's having

  424. this power of positive thinking,

  425. putting the best face forward.

  426. He's acknowledging

  427. the deep guilt

  428. that led to God's judgment.

  429. And he sees them now

  430. continuing that

  431. which led to God's judgment

  432. on them.

  433. But he's also going to talk

  434. about grace and mercy.

  435. Let's see how he goes on.

  436. Verse 8.

  437. But now for a brief moment,

  438. favor or grace

  439. has been shown

  440. by the Lord our God

  441. to leave us a remnant

  442. and to give us

  443. a secure hold

  444. within his holy place

  445. that our God

  446. might brighten our eyes.

  447. It's a wonderful phrase.

  448. excuse me,

  449. it's a wonderful phrase.

  450. That he might brighten our eyes.

  451. That's a wonderful phrase,

  452. isn't it?

  453. And,

  454. sorry,

  455. I've lost my place

  456. turning around.

  457. If he has shown us favor

  458. to leave us around,

  459. brighten our eyes,

  460. that's verse 8,

  461. and grant us

  462. a little reviving

  463. in our slavery.

  464. For we are slaves,

  465. yet our God

  466. has not forsaken us

  467. in our slavery.

  468. You see,

  469. here's acknowledgement

  470. of God's steadfast love.

  471. And once again,

  472. if he's acknowledging

  473. God's steadfast love

  474. in the context

  475. of being racist himself,

  476. this makes it even worse,

  477. not better.

  478. That's the question

  479. that we need to go back

  480. and think about.

  481. Verse 9 again.

  482. Yet our God

  483. has not forsaken us

  484. in our slavery,

  485. but has extended to us

  486. his steadfast love

  487. before the kings

  488. of Persia

  489. to grant us

  490. some reviving

  491. to set up

  492. the house of our God

  493. to repair its ruins

  494. and give us protection

  495. in Judea and Jerusalem.

  496. And now,

  497. our God,

  498. what shall we say

  499. after this?

  500. For we are forsaken

  501. your commandments,

  502. which you commanded

  503. by your servants,

  504. the prophets,

  505. saying,

  506. now here comes

  507. once again

  508. for us Canadians

  509. the problematic bit.

  510. The land

  511. that you are entering

  512. to take possession of

  513. is a land impure

  514. with the impurity

  515. of the peoples

  516. of the lands,

  517. with their abominations

  518. that have filled it

  519. from end to end

  520. with their uncleanness.

  521. Therefore,

  522. do not give your daughters

  523. to their sons,

  524. neither take their daughters

  525. for your sons,

  526. and never seek their peace

  527. or prosperity.

  528. That's a hard phrase,

  529. isn't it?

  530. Never seek their peace

  531. or prosperity,

  532. that you may be strong

  533. and eat the good

  534. of the land

  535. and leave it

  536. for an inheritance

  537. to your children forever.

  538. He's basically quoting

  539. or paraphrasing

  540. parts of Deuteronomy,

  541. but as well as that,

  542. Exodus,

  543. and as well as that,

  544. actually,

  545. the book of Judges

  546. and Joshua.

  547. And after,

  548. verse 13,

  549. after all that has come

  550. upon us

  551. for our evil deeds

  552. and for our great guilt,

  553. seeing that you are God,

  554. have punished us

  555. less than our iniquities

  556. deserve,

  557. and have given us

  558. such a remnant as this,

  559. shall we break

  560. your commandments again

  561. and intermarry

  562. with the people

  563. who practice

  564. these abominations?

  565. Would you not be angry

  566. with us

  567. until you consumed us

  568. so that there should be

  569. no remnant

  570. nor any to escape?

  571. O Lord,

  572. the God of Israel,

  573. you are just,

  574. for we are left

  575. a remnant

  576. that has escaped

  577. as it is today.

  578. Behold,

  579. we are before you

  580. in our guilt,

  581. for none can stand

  582. before you

  583. because of this.

  584. Now,

  585. you'll see

  586. there's 44 more verses

  587. after this,

  588. and I can just tell you

  589. that the short answer

  590. about what's going

  591. to happen after this

  592. is some of the secular leaders

  593. are struck by this,

  594. as Ezra continues to pray.

  595. They say that

  596. we need to deal with this,

  597. we need to put away,

  598. literally,

  599. they need to put away

  600. their foreign wives

  601. and the children

  602. from the foreign wives

  603. and that we need

  604. to deal with this,

  605. and they start to deal

  606. with it right away.

  607. In fact,

  608. this has probably happened,

  609. they can date it

  610. if you're sort of curious.

  611. This has started to happen,

  612. I've lost the dates here,

  613. but I think it's something

  614. like the 12th of,

  615. oh yeah,

  616. the 16th of December

  617. is when this happens.

  618. The 19th of December,

  619. they call everybody together

  620. and they say

  621. that if you don't come together,

  622. your property's forfeit.

  623. Ezra wants to deal

  624. with it right away,

  625. but the leaders

  626. of the community

  627. say,

  628. no, no,

  629. this is a very,

  630. very big issue,

  631. we want to make sure

  632. we do it in a just way,

  633. and so people go home

  634. and on the beginning

  635. of the 29th of December,

  636. they begin looking

  637. at individual cases

  638. and they are to judge

  639. these people,

  640. the goal is to have

  641. the wives

  642. and the children put away,

  643. I'll talk about it

  644. a little bit in a moment,

  645. but they're all to be judged

  646. according to the law,

  647. according to what we call

  648. the Tanakh or the Torah

  649. or the Old Testament,

  650. and by the 27th of March,

  651. so they take three months

  652. and it's all dealt with.

  653. So what's going on?

  654. As I said,

  655. I didn't go out of my way

  656. to find a chapter like this

  657. and I've read it many times

  658. but it never really struck me,

  659. I guess it strikes you

  660. very different

  661. if you have to speak

  662. about it in public,

  663. and in our case,

  664. it's on YouTube,

  665. so who knows

  666. what's going to happen

  667. downstream.

  668. So here's a couple of things,

  669. let's just walk towards,

  670. if you could put up

  671. the first point,

  672. that would be

  673. very, very helpful,

  674. and this is something

  675. which I've only been

  676. becoming aware of

  677. over the last couple of years.

  678. The world has been

  679. so changed by Jesus

  680. that it is hard

  681. to look at anything

  682. the way an ancient pagan would.

  683. This is a very odd way

  684. to begin this,

  685. isn't it,

  686. for some of you,

  687. but it's the truth.

  688. The world has been

  689. so changed by Jesus

  690. that it is hard

  691. to look at anything

  692. the way an ancient pagan would.

  693. There's a fellow

  694. by the name of Tom Holland

  695. who wrote a best-selling book

  696. called Dominion,

  697. and some of you

  698. are aware of him.

  699. There's a very, very good book

  700. brought by Glenn Scrivener

  701. called The Air We Breathe,

  702. and he looks at seven things

  703. which most modern Western people

  704. just think of as obvious,

  705. and he does a very, very clever thing.

  706. He uses non-Christian scholars

  707. and experts

  708. to show how all of those ideas

  709. that the average Canadian think

  710. is just obvious and reasonable

  711. aren't obvious and reasonable,

  712. but all, in fact,

  713. come from the Christian faith,

  714. all of them.

  715. And so we're so used

  716. to thinking in these categories.

  717. Like, Jesus is so completely changed

  718. the way people in the world think

  719. that when they look at stories like this,

  720. whether people realize it or not,

  721. they're looking at it

  722. from part of the way

  723. that they've learned to think

  724. because of Jesus.

  725. And so when we hear a text like this,

  726. we think of the soccer moms

  727. who live next door to us,

  728. we think of our nice neighbor,

  729. and we think this sounds

  730. like very, very, very type

  731. of extreme type of behavior

  732. and way of discussing it with them.

  733. But what we don't understand

  734. is what actually,

  735. what is it that the people did?

  736. Like, what were those people

  737. doing around there?

  738. And what did they believe?

  739. And what were the stories

  740. that they told themselves?

  741. If their kids went to Sunday school,

  742. what would they be taught

  743. in Sunday school?

  744. And how did that,

  745. that they were taught

  746. in Sunday school,

  747. then how did that reflect

  748. in their religion

  749. and their culture

  750. and their politics?

  751. Well, here's what they were taught.

  752. Baal, the main god

  753. that they worshipped,

  754. had sex with his mother.

  755. Why did he have sex

  756. with his mother?

  757. Because his father,

  758. who was a higher god,

  759. was mad at his wife

  760. and he wanted to humiliate her.

  761. So he encouraged Baal

  762. to have sex with his mom.

  763. You can just picture

  764. some of the moms here

  765. telling them a nice sweet story.

  766. Yes, I want to tell you

  767. all about Baal.

  768. He had sex with his mother.

  769. Because his dad

  770. wanted to humiliate his wife.

  771. It gets worse.

  772. Baal, sister,

  773. one of his sisters

  774. took the form of a cow

  775. and while she was

  776. in the form of a cow,

  777. he raped her

  778. 77 to 88 times.

  779. He raped her

  780. 77 to 88 times.

  781. This is their gods.

  782. As well as that,

  783. Baal

  784. regularly had sex

  785. with his daughter.

  786. And Baal

  787. fought with

  788. and murdered

  789. his brothers.

  790. And part of their mythology

  791. and part of their worship

  792. is that after this

  793. had happened,

  794. it was like an endless cycle.

  795. So it's not as if

  796. Baal just once did it.

  797. It's how they understand

  798. how fruitfulness happens.

  799. Like part of fruitfulness

  800. is to, in a sense,

  801. worship and reenact

  802. Baal having sex

  803. with his mom.

  804. And as well as that,

  805. the whole purpose

  806. that any of the gods

  807. had any human beings

  808. created was so that

  809. human beings

  810. could be their slaves.

  811. Every human being

  812. was a slave.

  813. Glenn Scrivner,

  814. if you go googling,

  815. he has this

  816. very powerful video

  817. called

  818. The Night Before Christmas

  819. and one of the things

  820. he says

  821. is that for the pagan gods,

  822. if a pagan god

  823. was to arrive,

  824. people would flee.

  825. And it's a stark

  826. contrast with Emmanuel,

  827. the Christian notion

  828. of God with us

  829. as Jesus.

  830. So imagine

  831. you live in the neighborhood

  832. with people like this

  833. and they're your neighbors

  834. and you start to realize

  835. that the neighbors,

  836. that's the stories

  837. they tell their kids.

  838. Would you let your kids

  839. play with them?

  840. And then you get

  841. to know the neighbors

  842. and one day

  843. they're saying,

  844. oh yeah, yeah,

  845. you know God,

  846. you know,

  847. the gods,

  848. Bahal and Asherah,

  849. they've given us

  850. two boys

  851. and four girls

  852. and then you sort of

  853. ask them,

  854. well,

  855. one moment

  856. there's just like

  857. two boys and two girls.

  858. Did something tragic

  859. happen to two

  860. of your daughters?

  861. They say,

  862. oh no, no,

  863. nothing tragic.

  864. One of our daughters,

  865. we gave them

  866. to the temple priest.

  867. You know when you go

  868. to see the priest

  869. having sex with somebody?

  870. Well, one of them

  871. is my daughter.

  872. And what about

  873. your other daughter?

  874. Well,

  875. we needed to deal

  876. with the gods

  877. being angry at us

  878. and they needed

  879. a human sacrifice

  880. and it was our

  881. great honor and privilege

  882. to give our other daughters

  883. so the priest

  884. could kill the daughter.

  885. Would you let your children

  886. play with your neighbors?

  887. Would you want

  888. your son or your daughter

  889. to marry

  890. one of the neighbors?

  891. Well,

  892. my George,

  893. that paints this whole picture

  894. in a very different light.

  895. what do you think

  896. the family structures

  897. would be like

  898. where the stories

  899. that they tell you

  900. to structure the universe

  901. is of this type of...

  902. I mean,

  903. let's...

  904. How many of you

  905. want to agree

  906. with the word abomination?

  907. That's not a judgmental phrase.

  908. It's actually

  909. a pretty good phrase.

  910. Really?

  911. That's how your family

  912. is structured?

  913. That's how you see the world?

  914. That's what you reenact?

  915. You reenact

  916. the regular rape

  917. of Baal of his sister?

  918. Like,

  919. that's how you

  920. understand the world?

  921. Now,

  922. here's the other thing

  923. to understand

  924. and this...

  925. When I tell you this

  926. and you might want

  927. to read Glenn Scrivener's book

  928. or Tom Holland's book

  929. Dominion

  930. or hear Tom Holland

  931. do some interviews.

  932. And...

  933. You see,

  934. this great...

  935. This profound project

  936. is...

  937. That's how everybody thought.

  938. Like,

  939. if you could go back in time,

  940. okay,

  941. the equivalent of the CBC,

  942. the equivalent

  943. of the Supreme Court,

  944. the government,

  945. the spiritual leaders,

  946. the universities,

  947. the artists,

  948. like,

  949. that's just...

  950. That's just how everybody thinks

  951. and that's just what

  952. everybody knows.

  953. And...

  954. And...

  955. And...

  956. If you can think about it,

  957. so God is actually

  958. trying to form a people

  959. that are centered around

  960. a beautiful vision

  961. which is radically...

  962. To say radically

  963. is too weak a word

  964. for how different it is

  965. from what everybody knows.

  966. And you can understand

  967. a little bit

  968. if they...

  969. If people are told...

  970. I'm going to describe

  971. more of it in a moment

  972. that no,

  973. we...

  974. We...

  975. No,

  976. we actually

  977. don't have a priest

  978. having sex

  979. with a whole pile

  980. of young girls

  981. as a way of worship.

  982. We read the scripture.

  983. Boy,

  984. is that ever lame.

  985. No power in that.

  986. No...

  987. With that.

  988. What wimps.

  989. And don't you know

  990. this is how the world is,

  991. you Jewish people?

  992. Now you understand

  993. a little bit

  994. about what the constant

  995. struggle is

  996. that God is trying

  997. to form a people

  998. in the midst of

  999. how everybody thinks

  1000. like this

  1001. which is very,

  1002. very different.

  1003. G.K. Chesterton

  1004. wrote a book

1005. over a hundred years ago

  1006. called Orthodoxy.

1007. It's still well worth reading.

1008. And one of the things

  1009. that he said

  1010. is that

  1011. the sort of

  1012. in some ways

  1013. the modern world

  1014. has gone mad

  1015. and it's gone mad

  1016. because the modern world

  1017. has taken

1018. some of the Christian virtues

1019. maybe one or two of them

1020. out of the whole range of them

  1021. and they've

  1022. followed them

  1023. to the utmost

  1024. but they follow

  1025. these virtues.

  1026. It's very interesting.

  1027. I was just watching

  1028. Tom Holland

  1029. who's still not a...

  1030. He's basically

  1031. become a Christian

  1032. in his thinking

  1033. but he acknowledges

  1034. that he hasn't

  1035. become a Christian.

  1036. But he now

  1037. just sees

  1038. that it's hard

  1039. for him to see

  1040. the world

  1041. through anything

  1042. other than Christian eyes

  1043. but he can't quite

  1044. have that giving

  1045. of himself.

  1046. And, you know,

  1047. he said

  1048. in this conversation

  1049. that

  1050. the modern world

  1051. takes a different virtue

1052. and sort of drives it

  1053. like a sledgehammer

  1054. through everything

  1055. and has disconnected it

  1056. from the other

  1057. Christian virtues

  1058. and it's also

  1059. disconnected it

  1060. from God,

  1061. grace,

  1062. forgiveness

  1063. and forgiveness

  1064. and that that's

  1065. what's describing

  1066. the modern world.

  1067. So, if you could

1068. put up the next point,

  1069. this would be

  1070. very helpful.

  1071. There can be

  1072. no good yes

  1073. without saying

  1074. multiple no's.

  1075. This is something

  1076. which is very hard

1077. for us to think about

1078. but if you think about it

  1079. all,

  1080. that's actually just

1081. true all of the time.

1082. If one of you decides

1083. that you want to get

  1084. your PhD

1085. which is a good thing

  1086. to do to pursue

  1087. that higher education,

  1088. you're going to have

1089. to say no to all

  1090. sorts of things.

  1091. You're going to have

1092. to say no to spending

1093. the money that you spend

  1094. on your PhD

1095. to maybe buy a car

  1096. or some other types

  1097. of things

  1098. or a nicer car.

1099. You're going to say no

  1100. to spending,

  1101. you know,

  1102. on a nice day

1103. you're going to go study

  1104. rather than go play

  1105. some sports.

1106. Like, you have to see

  1107. a range of no's.

  1108. If you're going

  1109. to have children,

  1110. if God gives you

  1111. that ability

  1112. and the opportunity

  1113. to have children,

  1114. you have children,

1115. you say yes to children,

  1116. you're going to have

  1117. to say no

1118. to all sorts of things.

  1119. Your house won't be

  1120. as tidy,

  1121. you won't have

  1122. as much money

  1123. to spend on yourself.

1124. You have to all of a sudden

1125. take them into the account

  1126. when you do things

1127. and if I want to say yes

  1128. in marriage to Louise,

1129. I say no to three

  1130. and a half billion

  1131. other women.

  1132. That's like that.

  1133. You can't say yes

  1134. to something good

  1135. without saying

  1136. a whole range of no's.

1137. The yes forms the no's.

  1138. That just makes sense,

  1139. right?

  1140. We want people

  1141. to say yes

1142. to things which are good

1143. and once you say that,

  1144. there's going to have

1145. to be a whole pile

  1146. of no's.

1147. And so that's what we see

  1148. working out here

  1149. in the text.

1150. And if you cover up

  1151. the next point,

  1152. here it is.

1153. The Lord is inviting you

  1154. to say yes

  1155. and embrace

  1156. his grace-given

  1157. beautiful way.

1158. The Lord is inviting you

  1159. to say yes

  1160. and embrace

  1161. his grace-given

  1162. beautiful way.

  1163. You see,

  1164. here's what's going on

  1165. in the text

  1166. which we don't

  1167. entirely realize.

  1168. What they're saying,

  1169. what the Jewish people

  1170. are invited to learn

  1171. and we're invited

  1172. to learn from this

  1173. is to say,

1174. no, no, no, no, no, no.

  1175. Human beings

  1176. aren't made

  1177. to be slaves.

  1178. God made human beings

1179. so that we could be

  1180. in a covenant

  1181. of love with him.

  1182. His desire was

  1183. that we would walk

  1184. with him

  1185. and have talks

  1186. in the garden

  1187. with him

  1188. that he could have

  1189. fellowship with us.

  1190. That's the vision,

  1191. not slavery.

1192. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  1193. You don't just,

  1194. you don't just do

  1195. all of these things

  1196. to people.

  1197. You don't just sort

  1198. of treat your children

  1199. and your wife

  1200. and your kids

  1201. like property.

  1202. No, every human being

1203. is made in the image

  1204. of God.

  1205. They have an integrity.

  1206. They have a dignity.

  1207. They have a value

  1208. that works.

1209. No, no, no, no, no.

  1210. Everybody doesn't

  1211. have to be married.

  1212. Like, just,

1213. what did I just say?

  1214. Every human being,

  1215. even if they're single,

  1216. even if they're a widow,

1217. even if they're an orphan,

  1218. they have a value.

1219. You can't just oppress them.

1220. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  1221. The community

  1222. that should be formed

  1223. around this beautiful way

1224. is one where they acknowledge

  1225. that there's the broken,

  1226. there's the poor,

  1227. there's the orphans,

  1228. there's the stranger,

  1229. and we're supposed

  1230. to care for them,

  1231. and we're not allowed

  1232. to oppress them.

1233. And no, no, no, no, no, no.

1234. It's not as if men

  1235. are sort of somehow

  1236. better than women.

  1237. No, no.

  1238. There's this beautiful vision

  1239. that every man

1240. bears the image of God

  1241. and a woman

1242. bears the image of God.

  1243. And God wants

  1244. a husband and wife

1245. to cleave to each other

  1246. and forsake all others

  1247. and to be generous

  1248. and to be fruitful

  1249. and to be multiply

1250. and to make the world

  1251. into a garden

1252. and into a beautiful place.

1253. And it's to be characterized

  1254. not by the darkness

  1255. of doing these things,

  1256. but God wants there

  1257. to be light

  1258. and he wants there

  1259. to be life

  1260. and he wants there

  1261. to be generosity.

1262. And he wants to be able

  1263. to walk with you.

1264. And that's this beautiful vision.

  1265. And why wouldn't you

  1266. want to embrace that?

  1267. If you're watching this

  1268. and you don't know

1269. where you are with Christ,

  1270. why wouldn't you want

  1271. to embrace that?

  1272. That's the vision.

  1273. Don't you want that

  1274. to be true?

  1275. That's what we want

  1276. to be true.

  1277. And the Bible says

  1278. God's,

  1279. and if you embrace

  1280. that vision,

  1281. you say no

  1282. to child sacrifice.

  1283. You say no

  1284. to incest.

  1285. You say no

  1286. to murdering your brother.

  1287. The beautiful way says

1288. we're going to figure out

  1289. reconciliation

  1290. rather than murder.

1291. We're going to figure out

  1292. truth-telling.

1293. We're going to figure out

  1294. repentance.

1295. We're going to figure out

  1296. prayer.

  1297. We're going to learn

  1298. how to walk

  1299. with our God together.

  1300. We want to row

  1301. in the same direction

  1302. in the family

  1303. and the community.

  1304. Isn't that a beautiful vision?

1305. And if you do that,

1306. you've got to say no

1307. to all this other stuff.

1308. So even in chapter 10,

1309. I have to watch my time.

  1310. I'm sort of already

1311. at the end of it.

  1312. Here's the thing,

1313. is that from the law's

  1314. point of view,

  1315. and this is just

1316. to give you a sense

  1317. of the complexity

  1318. of the issue,

  1319. not the complexity,

  1320. the closest modern

  1321. Canadian example

  1322. of what they're facing

  1323. is the issue

  1324. of bigamy.

  1325. You see,

  1326. according to Jewish law,

  1327. these relationships

  1328. were all illegal.

  1329. So just in Canada,

  1330. if it turned out

  1331. that I have

  1332. a second wife,

  1333. well,

  1334. that's against the law.

  1335. You folks would have,

  1336. if Louise didn't

  1337. kill me first,

  1338. you would have to

1339. figure out what to do

  1340. with me about

  1341. having two wives.

1342. But what the Canadian law

  1343. doesn't allow

1344. is for there to continue

  1345. to be two wives.

1346. One of them has to be

  1347. put away.

  1348. But how are they

  1349. put away?

  1350. There's two things

  1351. in the text

1352. which give you a hint.

  1353. The first is,

  1354. by the way,

  1355. that there's conversion.

  1356. If you go back

  1357. and read Ezra 6,

    Ezra 6:21

  1358. verse 21,

  1359. you'll see that

  1360. part of what's

  1361. been going on

  1362. on this whole

  1363. 80, 100-year journey

  1364. is that the peoples

  1365. of the nations

  1366. get captivated

  1367. by this beautiful vision

  1368. and are included

  1369. in the beautiful vision.

  1370. And so conversion

  1371. is an option.

  1372. And the other thing

  1373. is that the law

1374. which is used to judge,

  1375. and they don't go

  1376. into all the details,

  1377. there's literally

  1378. thousands of cases,

  1379. they can't go into

  1380. all of the details.

  1381. Well, they're judged

  1382. not according to

  1383. the pagan myths,

  1384. but they're judged

  1385. according to the law.

  1386. And the law

  1387. specifically says

  1388. you are to care

  1389. for the orphan

  1390. and the widow,

  1391. that justice

1392. is to be done to them.

  1393. So it doesn't go

  1394. into the details,

  1395. but you know

  1396. that that's how

  1397. they're to be judged.

1398. Now, just in my last

  1399. couple of minutes,

  1400. what about the racism

  1401. and the holy race?

1402. If you could put up

  1403. the fourth point,

1404. that would be very helpful.

  1405. The holy race

1406. is not a biological reality,

  1407. but a grace-created reality.

  1408. The holy race

1409. is not a biological reality,

  1410. but a grace-created reality.

  1411. In fact, actually,

  1412. literally,

  1413. it doesn't say race.

1414. The Bible has no category

  1415. for race.

1416. Race is a secular idea,

  1417. not a biblical idea.

  1418. Biblically,

1419. there are only human beings,

  1420. and every human being

1421. is made in the image of God,

1422. and that's the only reality.

  1423. There's just human beings.

  1424. That's all there is.

1425. But the actual literal word

  1426. isn't holy race,

  1427. but holy seed.

  1428. And it's a collective singular,

1429. which is a weird tense.

  1430. But you see,

  1431. what makes,

  1432. in a sense,

  1433. so on one level,

  1434. it's describing

  1435. the people that God

  1436. has called apart

  1437. for himself,

1438. but God calls them apart.

  1439. He doesn't just say,

  1440. oh, well,

1441. you have the right chromosomes,

1442. or you have the right skin color.

  1443. No,

  1444. everybody enters by grace.

1445. God is the only one

1446. who can set us aside

  1447. for himself.

  1448. It's a grace-driven reality,

  1449. and it's this odd

  1450. double symbolism,

  1451. because you see,

  1452. right,

  1453. if you go right,

1454. the term first comes up

  1455. in Genesis 12,

  1456. where God said

  1457. he's going to bless

1458. all of the people groups

  1459. of the world,

1460. and he's going to bless

1461. all of the people groups

  1462. of the world

  1463. through his holy seed.

  1464. And on one level,

  1465. it describes those people

  1466. that God has called

  1467. apart from himself,

  1468. but it also describes

1469. the one who would come

  1470. from that people group,

  1471. which is the Messiah.

  1472. It's this,

  1473. because it's a collective singular,

  1474. it on one level

  1475. describes the people,

1476. but it also can describe

  1477. one person.

  1478. And you see,

1479. all the way through this,

  1480. even if you listen

  1481. to this text,

  1482. Ezra,

  1483. there's a,

  1484. you know,

  1485. there's both a promise

  1486. and a riddle

  1487. to how Ezra thinks.

  1488. He knows about this

  1489. holy seed,

1490. and God is going to,

  1491. is doing something

  1492. through the holy seed,

1493. and one day he's going

  1494. to go through something

  1495. with the holy seed.

  1496. He also understands

  1497. that he can't stand

  1498. in God's presence

  1499. because his sins

  1500. are so bad,

  1501. and he understands

  1502. there's something

  1503. grace there,

  1504. but he can't quite

  1505. get his mind around

  1506. how that's going

  1507. to all work out,

  1508. because you see,

  1509. if you just have,

1510. if God just sort of

  1511. lets you just go

  1512. for the wrong things

  1513. you've done,

  1514. that's called favoritism,

  1515. that's called prejudice,

  1516. it's actually not

  1517. anything good.

  1518. And so there's this,

  1519. there's this profound

  1520. mystery and riddle

  1521. which is there

  1522. that somehow or another

  1523. there's this promise

  1524. of grace,

1525. we don't see how grace

  1526. is going to work

  1527. because we do things

  1528. which are wrong,

1529. and yet at the same time

  1530. we understand

  1531. that there's going

  1532. to be a way

  1533. that God is going

  1534. to make us holy

1535. and stand in his presence,

1536. and if you could put up

  1537. the final point

1538. that would be very helpful.

  1539. it's a promise

  1540. and a riddle,

  1541. this beautiful way

1542. points to the beautiful way

1543. in all of its fullness

  1544. and completeness

  1545. that comes to Jesus,

  1546. from Jesus,

  1547. where even though

  1548. people reject Jesus,

1549. virtually nobody in the world

  1550. anymore can think

  1551. apart from Jesus' teaching.

1552. It's because of Jesus' teaching

  1553. that we're at first

  1554. struck with what's been

  1555. happening to the women.

  1556. That's not how pagans

  1557. would view it.

  1558. They would just say,

  1559. oh, well, you know,

1560. sucks to be those women.

1561. You know, we can kill them anyway.

1562. Like, we can just kill

  1563. the children anyway.

  1564. But on one hand,

1565. yeah, the Savior that comes

1566. that changes how the world thinks,

  1567. at the same time,

  1568. well, here's the thing,

  1569. Jesus dies,

  1570. you know how all

  1571. of the pagan myths

  1572. say that human beings

1573. are created to be slaves,

1574. and part of the beautiful way

1575. is that God did not make

1576. human beings to be slaves.

  1577. But Jesus dies a slave's death

1578. so that you, a slave

1579. to the world, the flesh,

1580. and the devil, and to idols,

  1581. and your passions

1582. might be free in him.

  1583. That's the culmination

  1584. and the propulsion

  1585. of the beautiful vision.

1586. If the pagan gods come,

1587. you run because they want to kill.

  1588. when Emmanuel comes,

  1589. he dies

  1590. for those of us

  1591. who are slaves

1592. so that we could be his children

  1593. by adoption and grace.

  1594. Isn't that a beautiful vision?

1595. That is the beautiful vision.

1596. And he wants to include you.

  1597. And he wants you

1598. to embrace the beautiful vision,

  1599. and if you embrace

  1600. the beautiful vision,

  1601. there's going to be

  1602. a whole range of no's

1603. that you have to say.

  1604. And by the way,

  1605. this whole issue

  1606. of intermarriage,

1607. it's part of the reason

  1608. why it still is

  1609. a Christian teaching,

  1610. and it's a Christian teaching

1611. if you just think about it

  1612. for a second.

1613. I'm called to be generous

  1614. with my money,

1615. and I think that the Bible

  1616. wants me to try

  1617. to be generous

1618. with 10% of my money,

1619. and if I marry somebody

  1620. who actually thinks

  1621. that's really wrong,

1622. how's that going to work out?

  1623. I think I need to gather

  1624. with the Lord's people

  1625. on a Sunday morning,

1626. and if I marry somebody

  1627. who says,

  1628. no, Sunday mornings

1629. is when you sleep in,

  1630. and then maybe go

1631. and have some really nice

  1632. croissants and coffee,

1633. how's that going to work out?

  1634. And if you say,

1635. I think I really need to go

  1636. and spend some time

1637. in Bible reading and prayer,

  1638. and they say,

1639. well, I wanted to spend

  1640. some time with you,

1641. how's that going to work out?

1642. And it can go on

  1643. and on and on,

  1644. and it's not that

1645. the Lord is cruel to you,

1646. he wants you to embrace

  1647. the beautiful vision,

1648. and he wants you to walk

  1649. in the beautiful vision,

1650. and he wants you to walk

  1651. in the beautiful vision

  1652. and the power

  1653. of the Holy Spirit

  1654. for your great good

1655. and the good of the world,

  1656. and I urge you

  1657. to embrace it,

  1658. but stand in prayer.

  1659. Father,

  1660. I began by praying

  1661. about how we seem

  1662. to be contradictory

1663. and we want it all,

  1664. and we want people

  1665. to think we're generous,

  1666. but we don't want

1667. to give away any money.

  1668. We want people

  1669. to think we're smart,

1670. but we don't want to read.

1671. We want to be athletic,

  1672. but not work out,

  1673. and we never even

  1674. see ourselves usually

  1675. most of the time,

  1676. and Father,

  1677. we give you thanks

  1678. and praise for this

  1679. beautiful vision

  1680. and how it's anchored

  1681. in grace,

  1682. and we ask,

  1683. Lord,

  1684. that your grace

1685. given to us in Jesus

  1686. would become such

1687. an anchor to our soul

  1688. and such a strong

  1689. place to stand

  1690. and such a reality

  1691. in our lives

  1692. that pushes us

  1693. to be generous,

  1694. and it pushes us

1695. even to look at ourselves

  1696. and on one hand,

  1697. Father,

  1698. just laugh at ourselves

1699. at how ridiculous we are

1700. and at the same time

  1701. call out to you

  1702. for help,

  1703. that Father,

  1704. our lives,

  1705. Father,

1706. more and more and more

  1707. might embrace

  1708. the beautiful vision

1709. in all of its completeness

1710. in all of whom we are,

  1711. that this beautiful vision

  1712. would be that

  1713. which guides our church,

  1714. our individual lives,

  1715. our friendships,

  1716. our interactions,

  1717. Father,

  1718. with the state

1719. as we try to get them

  1720. to cast away things

  1721. which aren't in keeping

  1722. with it,

  1723. not that they all

  1724. become Christians,

  1725. but that it's ultimately

  1726. a beautiful vision

  1727. for everybody,

  1728. and so,

  1729. Father,

  1730. we ask that this

  1731. beautiful vision

  1732. would become more real

  1733. to our hearts,

  1734. and we ask this

1735. in the name of Jesus,

1736. your Son and our Savior.

  1737. Amen.
