  1. All right, let's read together from Matthew chapter 5, verses 21 to 26.

    Matthew 5:21–26

  2. This is God's Word.

  3. You have heard that it was said to those of old, you shall not murder.

  4. And whoever murders will be liable to judgment.

  5. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.

  6. Whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council.

  7. And whoever says, you fool, will be liable to the hell of fire.

  8. So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,

  9. leave your gift there before the altar and go.

  10. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

  11. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court,

  12. lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.

  13. Truly I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

  14. This is God's Holy Word.

  15. Tonight, as Cody says, we're carrying on in our series on the Sermon on the Mount.

  16. Last week we were looking at this huge claim that Jesus makes.

  17. He is sitting on top of the mountain, and he tells the crowds,

  18. he did not come to get rid of the law or the Old Testament, but he came to fulfill it.

  19. He came, he says, to give the law meaning, to fill it full of meaning.

  20. And now tonight, we hit the first of six commands, six Old Testament commands,

  21. which we've seen before, which he now elevates and gives their full meaning to, just like he said.

  22. So we're thinking about anger tonight, but if you have your Bibles open,

  23. you see this list from verse 21.

  24. To the end of the chapter, focused on six Old Testament commands,

  25. and Jesus says,

  26. And when he says that, he's not changing the commands.

  27. He's not making them more difficult or harder to observe.

  28. That's not what he's doing.

  29. He's telling the people that he's talking to in his day that the law has been interpreted wrong.

  30. He's telling the crowds, you know, you think you've got it right,

  31. focusing on the external acts, focusing on what you do.

  32. It's not that at all.

  33. It's all about the heart, and it's always been about the heart.

  34. Jesus doesn't abolish the law.

  35. He fills it with meaning.

  36. He says, this is what has always been about, the state of your heart.

  37. And why does that matter?

  38. Why does that matter?

  39. Because that's what God sees.

  40. That's what Jesus forces us to see in the sermon.

  41. You know, one constant problem throughout the Old Testament,

  42. when you see the law being given,

  43. and you see how the people respond to it.

  44. They become obsessed with the outward.

  45. They become obsessed with the external.

  46. And by the time we reach the book of Isaiah,

  47. what does God say?

  48. He says, their hearts are far from me.

  49. Their hearts are far from me.

  50. Jesus comes, and he gives it its true meaning.

  51. He says, this is what the law is all about.

  52. It's about your heart.

  53. God sees it.

  54. He knows what you think, how you feel.

  55. He knows your attitude towards him.

  56. He knows your attitude towards your neighbor.

  57. The law is all about your heart.

  58. And thinking about that has brought a lot of questions to the church throughout history.

  59. This is a really quick blanket summary.

  60. You could read forever about this.

  61. I did this week.

  62. But some commentators today,

  63. and over the last hundred years,

  64. have noticed that throughout church history,

  65. the church has, in large parts,

  66. either evaded the sermon,

  67. or become completely obsessed with it.

  68. So some have tried to evade it by saying that,

  69. you know, these laws are only meant for certain Christians.

  70. They're meant for the super holy,

  71. the clergy.

  72. They're meant for ministers.

  73. They're meant, you know, for Corey,

  74. not for us.

  75. Some have come and said,

  76. well, maybe it's for Christians.

  77. It's for people in the church.

  78. But as soon as you go back to work,

  79. as soon as you go back to your family life,

  80. it doesn't apply anymore.

  81. It doesn't matter.

  82. So in that way, you know,

  83. people have come and have evaded the Sermon on the Mount.

  84. Some obsess over these verses by saying that,

  85. how Christian you are,

  86. and I think this is quite common today,

  87. how Christian you are

  88. depends on how literally you obey these commands

  89. that Jesus makes.

  90. You can never be angry.

  91. You must always turn the other cheek.

  92. You must never swear enough.

  93. And you can see how that gives rise to,

  94. you know, certain groups and certain sects today.

  95. We want to avoid both.

  96. Jesus tells us,

  97. when you read the Sermon on the Mount,

  98. to avoid both tendencies.

  99. This sermon is part of a bigger chapter,

  100. part of a bigger section,

  101. framed by chapters 4 and 9.

  102. And in chapters 4 and 9,

  103. Matthew uses exactly the same phrase

  104. to say that Jesus has been going about

  105. the towns and the villages,

  106. preaching about the kingdom of God.

  107. And when he uses exactly the same phrase

  108. in chapter 4 and chapter 9,

  109. that's his way of saying that this whole section

  110. is about the kingdom of God.

  111. And one way,

  112. one way tonight,

  113. maybe we can describe,

  114. or we can describe the kingdom of God

  115. is by saying

  116. that it's the restoration of life

  117. as it's meant to be

  118. and creation,

  119. which will be completed by God

  120. out of love.

  121. That restoration,

  122. which began when Jesus died and rose again,

  123. it is ongoing,

  124. and it will be completed

  125. at the new creation.

  126. And if you are a Christian,

  127. you know,

  128. if you have repented and believed

  129. like we were telling the kids,

  130. you are tonight a part of that restoration.

  131. This is a long introduction, I know,

  132. but one summary for this sermon I read,

  133. it helped me think about this sermon

  134. and these six commands especially.

  135. One writer says this,

  136. In this way,

  137. the kingdom of God

  138. is the restoration of life.

  139. And it is the Sermon on the Mount

  140. which indicates the road

  141. towards this restoration.

  142. It's not opposed to life,

  143. to nature,

  144. and to the community,

  145. but in truth,

  146. it is for

  147. and in support

  148. of life.

  149. The sermon,

  150. these six commands

  151. aren't for the elite Christian,

  152. and they're not commands

  153. that you obsess over either,

  154. but Jesus

  155. preaches to you.

  156. Jesus preaches

  157. to the church tonight,

  158. and he says,

  159. to practice the life

  160. of the new creation.

  161. This world,

  162. this city,

  163. our lives are broken.

  164. They are messy.

  165. We are surrounded

  166. by disorder and frustration.

  167. God's ongoing work

  168. is to undo that.

  169. It's to undo that.

  170. And we are called to partake,

  171. to be a faint picture

  172. of what is to come.

  173. So specifically,

  174. when Jesus says,

  175. don't be angry,

  176. he's not telling you tonight

  177. to be a better Christian.

  178. He's telling you

  179. your purpose in the world.

  180. He's telling you

  181. what your function is

  182. in the world.

  183. God cares about

  184. the sort of person you are.

  185. Jesus has begun

  186. this kingdom work,

  187. and he says,

  188. don't be angry.

  189. Will you support life?

  190. Jesus asks,

  191. and not be angry.

  192. So just two points

  193. on these verses.

  194. Two points

  195. thinking about anger.

  196. What is anger?

  197. Anger,

  198. and what do you do

  199. about it?

  200. So what is anger?

  201. It's not hard to define,

  202. I don't think.

  203. You can look at a day

  204. this week probably,

  205. or a day this month,

  206. or we can easily

  207. remember a time at least

  208. where we got angry.

  209. We can remember a moment

  210. that we became antagonizing.

  211. We became hostile

  212. towards someone

  213. in words,

  214. or even in thought.

  215. It might involve

  216. screaming,

  217. shouting.

  218. It might involve

  219. insulting someone.

  220. It might all be

  221. in our head.

  222. It might involve

  223. a feeling of resentment

  224. that keeps on returning it.

  225. In psychiatry,

  226. it's called

  227. a non-cooperative response.

  228. Very professional

  229. and kind way of putting it.

  230. I think

  231. it's a non-cooperative

  232. response to something

  233. that has been done

  234. or said to you.

  235. Now,

  236. I'm from the Highlands

  237. and I know

  238. there's some people here

  239. from the Highlands.

  240. And I know,

  241. I know that you know

  242. what it means

  243. to be driving

  244. on a single track road

  245. with a camper van

  246. coming towards you

  247. and it's gone past

  248. the passing place

  249. and the driver

  250. is refusing

  251. to reverse

  252. and you've got

  253. a queue forming

  254. behind you

  255. and a queue forming

  256. behind him

  257. and now the driver

  258. in that camper van

  259. doesn't see you

  260. get out and shake your fists

  261. but your passenger

  262. hears every word

  263. you say about

  264. that camper van driver.

  265. And maybe this driver

  266. thinks everything is fine

  267. but your passenger

  268. knows you're angry.

  269. It's a non-cooperative response.

  270. What about,

  271. you know,

  272. this week,

  273. I'm trying not to think

  274. of too many personal examples

  275. to give myself away

  276. but in the cafe,

  277. you put your order in

  278. for your lunch

  279. or your coffee

  280. or whatever it is

  281. and the one person

  282. that's working

  283. behind that counter

  284. is trying to balance

  285. three orders

  286. and you're saying,

  287. just get a move on.

  288. Just think about

  289. my order here.

  290. Short-term examples

  291. of anger,

  292. long forgotten.

  293. What about your colleague

  294. or someone in your family,

  295. at your family gathering maybe,

  296. who says something

  297. that really hurts you,

  298. says something

  299. that angers you

  300. and you've got to see

  301. this person frequently

  302. and often,

  303. five days a week?

  304. What if that is

  305. an ongoing pain

  306. in your relationship

  307. and your response

  308. is either verbal,

  309. you retaliate

  310. or you keep it inside

  311. but even in moments of joy,

  312. that feeling of anger,

  313. that feeling of resentment

  314. takes over,

  315. even in a moment of joy.

  316. You remember

  317. what this person

  318. has said to you.

  319. In both short-term,

  320. long-term,

  321. verbally or mentally,

  322. we get angry

  323. and what does Jesus say

  324. in Matthew 5?

  325. He says it's devastating.

  326. He says it's devastating.

  327. So in verse 21,

  328. he says,

  329. you've heard it said,

  330. do not murder

  331. for you will be subject

  332. to murder.

  333. And then he says,

  334. no, more than that,

  335. don't be angry.

  336. Do not be angry

  337. for you will be subject

  338. to judgment.

  339. What is he saying?

  340. He's saying that

  341. unrighteous,

  342. insulting,

  343. hurtful anger

  344. has the same source

  345. as murder.

  346. That's what he's saying.

  347. He's saying you can't

  348. bring this down

  349. to whether or not

  350. you have caused

  351. physical harm.

  352. It's not as easy as that.

  353. That's what the Pharisees

  354. want to say.

  355. He says it's not as easy

  356. as that.

  357. It comes from a heart

  358. filled with contempt

  359. for someone.

  360. If it lasts for a moment,

  361. if it lasts for months,

  362. God sees the heart.

  363. God sees the heart.

  364. Anger comes from

  365. the same place.

  366. If you just look

  367. more precisely

  368. at the way Jesus

  369. describes anger here.

  370. In verse 22,

  371. from verse 22,

  372. there's this movement

  373. from anger

  374. to insulting

  375. to calling someone

  376. a fool.

  377. And a lot of commentators

  378. notice that

  379. there's not much difference

  380. between these three causes

  381. that Jesus gives us,

  382. or at least they aren't

  383. growing in intensity.

  384. In the original language,

  385. Jesus uses this word,

  386. raka,

  387. which means

  388. empty head,

  389. or we would probably

  390. say idiot today.

  391. And compare that

  392. to a fool,

  393. which probably has

  394. something more to do

  395. with someone's character.

  396. So maybe Jesus

  397. is saying here

  398. there's a difference

  399. in the way your anger

  400. can be displayed.

  401. Maybe you're angry

  402. at someone

  403. because of the way

  404. they intellectually

  405. work things out.

  406. Maybe you're angry

  407. at someone because

  408. of their heart,

  409. their character.

  410. anger.

  411. But anger is shown

  412. in everyday

  413. typical scenarios,

  414. if we can call it that.

  415. At the same time,

  416. in each of these three causes

  417. which aren't intensifying,

  418. these are each paired

  419. with a punishment

  420. which is intensifying.

  421. So Jesus says,

  422. anger generally

  423. results in judgment.

  424. Whoever insults

  425. is brought before the council.

  426. If you call someone

  427. a fool,

  428. he says,

  429. your judgment

  430. is the hell of fire.

  431. Why does the punishment

  432. that Jesus describes

  433. escalate

  434. while the cause doesn't?

  435. Why does he speak

  436. in that way?

  437. What is it about

  438. calling someone a fool

  439. that is worse

  440. than insulting someone?

  441. Nothing.

  442. Not much anyway.

  443. And that's not a point

  444. that Jesus is making.

  445. He's saying

  446. that there can be,

  447. there is an anger

  448. that we are liable to.

  449. And we can treat it

  450. very lightly.

  451. It can be expressed

  452. in different ways.

  453. It can be thought or spoken.

  454. It can be harsh and hurtful.

  455. It can be light

  456. and forgotten in a moment.

  457. It can be against

  458. that driver coming towards me

  459. that I'll never see again.

  460. It can be against my colleague

  461. who I see five days a week.

  462. But Jesus is saying

  463. when he gives you

  464. these three different causes

  465. of anger

  466. or three different

  467. ways you show anger

  468. and three different judgments,

  469. Jesus is saying

  470. that you take lightly

  471. what God takes so seriously.

  472. That is what he's getting at.

  473. That's why the punishment

  474. of the hell of fire

  475. is so shocking

  476. when we reach that point

  477. in the passage.

  478. We don't expect it.

  479. He's telling us

  480. how damaging

  481. anger can be

  482. and how serious it is.

  483. What is it

  484. to be angry?

  485. It's to be antagonizing.

  486. It's to be non-cooperative.

  487. And it's devastating

  488. because where God

  489. brings about restoration,

  490. where God promises

  491. to fix what is wrong

  492. in the world,

  493. we are going against that

  494. in our anger,

  495. in our hearts.

  496. it's helpful,

  497. I think,

  498. at this point

  499. to say something

  500. about righteous anger,

  501. something

  502. that most of us

  503. probably think we have

  504. and we probably

  505. don't show it

  506. very often

  507. if we do have it.

  508. Jesus shows us

  509. what righteous anger is.

  510. And if you keep going

  511. in Matthew's Gospel

  512. to chapter 23,

  513. Jesus is speaking

  514. about the Pharisees

  515. and he says,

  516. these people have

  517. shut the kingdom of God

  518. in people's faces.

  519. They've shut it up

  520. in people's faces.

  521. And then he says,

  522. you blind fools.

  523. You know,

  524. why can Jesus

  525. call the Pharisees

  526. fools?

  527. Why can he be angry?

  528. It's because

  529. they are convincing

  530. people

  531. that the law

  532. is about their actions.

  533. What this whole sermon

  534. is about.

  535. They're still convincing

  536. people that way.

  537. It's about the heart

  538. Jesus came to show

  539. that,

  540. to bring out

  541. that truest meaning

  542. and the Pharisees

  543. say, no, no,

  544. it's just about

  545. what you do.

  546. In other words,

  547. they distract people

  548. from what a true,

  549. restored,

  550. beautiful life is.

  551. They distract people

  552. from the restoration

  553. that God is doing.

  554. That's why Jesus

  555. can get angry.

  556. He's angry at sin.

  557. That's what

  558. righteous anger is.

  559. the kingdom of God

  560. which restores

  561. what is broken,

  562. which brings about

  563. all that is good.

  564. They shut it out.

  565. And he's angry

  566. at sin.

  567. And it's something

  568. we rarely

  569. get right.

  570. I read this example

  571. in an article

  572. earlier this week.

  573. It's from a Christian

  574. father

  575. talking about

  576. anger shown

  577. towards his kids.

  578. But I think

  579. we can apply it

  580. in many different ways.

  581. He says this,

  582. there is a difference

  583. between anger

  584. and my kids

  585. for the way

  586. their disobedience

  587. invites danger

  588. and shows disrespect

  589. to their mother

  590. versus anger

  591. at my kids

  592. because the real issue

  593. is that I am afraid

  594. of how their disobedience

  595. reflects on me

  596. as a dad

  597. in the public eye.

  598. The first motive

  599. is godly.

  600. The second motive

  601. is self-centered

  602. and lacking

  603. any real concern

  604. for the good

  605. of my children.

  606. Do you get angry?

  607. And if you do

  608. is it righteous?

  609. Or is it self-centered?

  610. The kingdom has come

  611. Jesus says.

  612. The kingdom has come

  613. and it will one day

  614. come finally.

  615. One day

  616. there will be

  617. no frustration

  618. there will be

  619. no aggravation

  620. there will be

  621. no sadness.

  622. Are you taking part

  623. tonight in that reality

  624. which has been

  625. brought about?

  626. Are you supporting

  627. life?

  628. Are you living

  629. a kingdom life

  630. as God restores

  631. what is broken?

  632. Or is your anger

  633. stopping you

  634. from being the person

  635. you are meant to be?

  636. Secondly,

  637. what can you do

  638. if anger

  639. is your problem?

  640. Jesus gives us

  641. two scenarios

  642. and again

  643. in these two scenarios

  644. he's heightening

  645. the situation.

  646. He's making them

  647. more serious

  648. as he goes along.

  649. He talks about

  650. dealing with your anger

  651. in terms of

  652. settling your case

  653. with your brother

  654. and then with an accuser.

  655. And it seems

  656. like these two

  657. quite random

  658. these two pictures

  659. are quite random

  660. but

  661. they capture

  662. exactly what you're

  663. meant to do

  664. with anger

  665. instead of letting it

  666. simmer in the background.

  667. In the first case

  668. we're dealing

  669. with a brother

  670. or a friend

  671. someone that we

  672. are bonded to

  673. someone that we

  674. are close to

  675. and the relationship

  676. here Jesus says

  677. is hurt by anger

  678. and Jesus says

  679. in verse 23

  680. leave the temple

  681. leave your sacrifice

  682. behind

  683. and go and

  684. reconcile

  685. with your brother.

  686. Leave church

  687. he says.

  688. That's how serious

  689. it is.

  690. Leave church

  691. mid service

  692. if you have to.

  693. Go home

  694. and reconcile

  695. with your brother.

  696. Make right

  697. the relationship

  698. the relationship

  699. that has been

  700. broken

  701. by anger.

  702. What's Jesus

  703. wanting you to do?

  704. At the least

  705. he's wanting you

  706. to understand

  707. that coming to church

  708. every week

  709. coming here

  710. every week

  711. does not remove

  712. the fact

  713. that we have

  714. a moral duty.

  715. Coming here

  716. worshipping God

  717. is

  718. the best thing

  719. you can do

  720. in the week

  721. and yet

  722. it doesn't

  723. take away

  724. the fact

  725. that you

  726. cannot

  727. leave anger

  728. unresolved

  729. outside that door.

  730. That's what

  731. Jesus is saying.

  732. If you're angry

  733. with someone

  734. that is near to you

  735. and that person

  736. knows it

  737. or

  738. as much as

  739. that breakdown

  740. is dependent

  741. on you

  742. Jesus says

  743. you need to

  744. heal

  745. your relationships.

  746. Church does

  747. not substitute

  748. the need

  749. to fix it.

  750. be reconciled

  751. whether you

  752. need forgiveness

  753. or your

  754. brother does

  755. Jesus

  756. fix it.

  757. Fix it.

  758. And the

  759. second picture

  760. it's different

  761. in that

  762. it's talking

  763. about being

  764. taken to

  765. court by an

  766. accuser.

  767. An enemy

  768. different situation

  769. it's building

  770. on the same

  771. case.

  772. If you are

  773. walking to

  774. court with

  775. your accuser

  776. you better

  777. be urgent

  778. in settling

  779. this matter

  780. quickly.

  781. And not

  782. rashly

  783. not insincerely

  784. but properly

  785. before they

  786. throw you

  787. in jail.

  788. In the

  789. same way

  790. Jesus

  791. says be

  792. quick to

  793. reconcile

  794. be quick

  795. to mend

  796. what is

  797. broken

  798. in your

  799. relationships.

  800. Be

  801. urgent

  802. Jesus

  803. says.

  804. King

  805. Solomon

  806. he gives

  807. us one

  808. reason I

  809. have many

  810. in the

  811. Bible

  812. why we

  813. ought to

  814. be

  815. urgent.

  816. One

  817. reason I

  818. have many.

  819. He says

  820. this in

  821. Ecclesiastes

  822. 7.

  823. Be not

  824. quick in

  825. your

  826. spirit to

  827. become

  828. angry

  829. for

  830. anger

  831. lodges

  832. in the

  833. heart.

  834. Anger

  835. left alone

  836. he's saying

  837. begins to

  838. make a

  839. home

  840. in you.

  841. It

  842. lodges in

  843. the heart

  844. and soon

  845. an increasing

  846. amount of

  847. your

  848. relationships

  849. will be

  850. threatened

  851. by this

  852. anger

  853. which

  854. becomes

  855. more and

  856. more at

  857. home in

  858. you

  859. and which

  860. becomes

  861. something

  862. is alive

  863. more and

  864. more.

  865. There will

  866. be more

  867. to be

  868. angry at

  869. you'll

  870. remain

  871. angrier

  872. for longer.

  873. Jesus

  874. says no

  875. settle

  876. this

  877. urgently.

  878. Settle

  879. it

  880. urgently.

  881. Don't

  882. let it

  883. happen.

  884. You're

  885. living

  886. separately

  887. he's

  888. telling

  889. the

  890. people

  891. to

  892. the

  893. way

  894. life

  895. is

  896. meant

  897. to

  898. be

  899. lived.

  900. You're

  901. denying

  902. the

  903. restoration

  904. that

  905. God

  906. is

  907. working

  908. out.

  909. So make

  910. amends as

  911. urgently as

  912. you can.

  913. Don't even

  914. let your

  915. Sunday

  916. worship

  917. take away

  918. from that.

  919. But fix

  920. things

  921. quickly.

  922. I know

  923. that this

  924. is difficult

  925. and

  926. for some

  927. people

  928. here

  929. relationships

  930. have been

  931. broken for

  932. years.

  933. Maybe.

  934. Anger

  935. or resentment

  936. or frustration

  937. has meant

  938. that you're

  939. relationship

  940. with your

  941. close friend

  942. or your

  943. brother

  944. is not

  945. what it

  946. used to

  947. be.

  948. And hearing

  949. Jesus say

  950. you need

  951. to fix

  952. that,

  953. it doesn't

  954. make it

  955. easy.

  956. It doesn't

  957. make it

  958. easy at

  959. all.

  960. We open

  961. with words

  962. from Romans

  963. 5,

  964. right at the

  965. start of the

  966. service,

  967. where Paul

  968. says that

  969. we were

  970. once enemies

  971. with God.

  972. And see

  973. that picture

  974. that Jesus

  975. gives us

  976. of walking

  977. to the

  978. court.

  979. The law

  980. is the

  981. accuser

  982. here.

  983. When

  984. we're told

  985. that we're

  986. enemies

  987. with God,

  988. the law

  989. is the

  990. accuser.

  991. We walk

  992. on a

  993. path and

  994. the law

  995. says,

  996. you know,

  997. you've not

  998. been able

  999. to keep

  1000. one of

  1001. these

  1002. commands.

  1003. Don't

  1004. be angry.

  1005. Don't

  1006. lust.

  1007. Keep

  1008. your word.

  1009. We are

  1010. not able

  1011. to do

  1012. any of

  1013. it,

  1014. the law

  1015. says.

  1016. And

  1017. you know,

  1018. the hell

  1019. that Jesus

  1020. talks about

  1021. here is a

  1022. reality

  1023. sin.

  1024. Off

  1025. that.

  1026. And yet,

  1027. and yet,

  1028. in the

  1029. court,

  1030. Jesus,

  1031. who is

  1032. not a

  1033. sinner,

  1034. walks in

  1035. and what

  1036. does he

  1037. say?

  1038. He says,

  1039. you'll pay

  1040. every penny.

  1041. He says,

  1042. you'll pay

  1043. every penny.

  1044. Christ was

  1045. blameless.

  1046. No one

  1047. could point

  1048. the finger.

  1049. But he

  1050. became sin.

  1051. He walks

  1052. in the

  1053. courtroom and

  1054. he says,

  1055. he'll pay

  1056. for it.

  1057. He'll pay

  1058. every penny.

  1059. When you

  1060. think about

  1061. your broken

  1062. relationships

  1063. and how

  1064. devastating

  1065. they can

  1066. be,

  1067. something

  1068. that no

  1069. one else

  1070. here could

  1071. even understand

  1072. and something

  1073. that you

  1074. don't know

  1075. how to

  1076. deal with,

  1077. do you

  1078. remember

  1079. tonight that

  1080. Jesus came

  1081. to you?

  1082. That Jesus

  1083. came to

  1084. you?

  1085. Do you

  1086. remember that

  1087. through taking

  1088. your punishment,

  1089. through his

  1090. death and

  1091. rising again,

  1092. he has

  1093. promised to

  1094. restore goodness

  1095. to you

  1096. and give

  1097. you life as

  1098. it is meant

  1099. to be?

  1100. Do you

  1101. remember that

  1102. it was your

  1103. anger and

  1104. my anger that

  1105. put him on

  1106. the cross in

  1107. the first

  1108. place?

  1109. The cry to

  1110. free Barabbas

  1111. and the cry to

  1112. put Jesus on

  1113. the cross was

  1114. my angry

  1115. cry.

  1116. It was

  1117. because my

  1118. sin that he

  1119. went there.

  1120. That's how

  1121. far God has

  1122. gone to

  1123. reconcile you

  1124. with him.

  1125. Jesus doesn't

  1126. reconcile with

  1127. you or with

  1128. me through a

  1129. conversation.

  1130. No, he

  1131. reconciles with

  1132. us through

  1133. death, his

  1134. own death.

  1135. Do you

  1136. believe that

  1137. though you

  1138. stand accused,

  1139. Jesus paid

  1140. the cost for

  1141. your anger

  1142. and for

  1143. mine?

  1144. Have you

  1145. trusted in

  1146. him for

  1147. that?

  1148. And if you

  1149. have, will

  1150. you take

  1151. part?

  1152. Will you take

  1153. part in

  1154. that

  1155. restoration?

  1156. If you're

  1157. a Christian,

  1158. will you live

  1159. out your

  1160. kingdom life?

  1161. Will you

  1162. support life

  1163. and not

  1164. be angry?

  1165. Just to

  1166. finish, a few

  1167. things we can

  1168. think about,

  1169. a few things we

  1170. can do this

  1171. week maybe.

  1172. Ask yourself

  1173. the hard

  1174. questions.

  1175. You know,

  1176. when I get

  1177. angry, is my

  1178. anger

  1179. righteous?

  1180. Righteous?

  1181. Am I

  1182. angry at

  1183. this because,

  1184. you know, it's

  1185. done directly

  1186. against God and

  1187. his restoration?

  1188. Or am I

  1189. angry because

  1190. it's upsetting

  1191. me?

  1192. And because it

  1193. offends me or

  1194. my needs?

  1195. Is my anger

  1196. slow to appear?

  1197. Is it quick to

  1198. disappear?

  1199. How often, you

  1200. know, how often

  1201. does the Bible

  1202. say to be slow

  1203. to anger?

  1204. Is that really,

  1205. really the case

  1206. for me?

  1207. Ask the hard

  1208. questions.

  1209. Anger,

  1210. anger can be

  1211. hard to deal

  1212. with for some

  1213. and others.

  1214. Some people

  1215. rarely get

  1216. angry, for

  1217. some, you

  1218. know, it's a

  1219. bit more

  1220. natural and

  1221. it's a habit

  1222. that needs to

  1223. be worked

  1224. out of.

  1225. One thing

  1226. to do, to

  1227. gradually work

  1228. yourself out of

  1229. an angry

  1230. heart, is

  1231. pursue love

  1232. in your

  1233. relationships.

  1234. no matter

  1235. how long

  1236. or how

  1237. short the

  1238. encounter.

  1239. You know,

  1240. ask, how

  1241. can I love

  1242. this person?

  1243. How can I

  1244. interact with

  1245. this person

  1246. in a way

  1247. that is

  1248. good for

  1249. them?

  1250. Maybe

  1251. anger is

  1252. what defines

  1253. that current

  1254. relationship.

  1255. Settle it,

  1256. Jesus says.

  1257. Settle it.

  1258. And pursue

  1259. love in your

  1260. relationships.

  1261. relationships.

  1262. Imitate your

  1263. God who

  1264. went to the

  1265. cross for

  1266. you.

  1267. And lastly,

  1268. one more

  1269. thing.

  1270. Remember you

  1271. have a kingdom

  1272. life.

  1273. You have a

  1274. kingdom life

  1275. if you're a

  1276. Christian.

  1277. It's not about

  1278. being a better

  1279. Christian.

  1280. It's just about

  1281. living the life

  1282. you've been

  1283. given.

  1284. Will you

  1285. pursue

  1286. restoration?

  1287. Will you

  1288. pursue what

  1289. Jesus has

  1290. died for?

  1291. Will you

  1292. support life

  1293. and not

  1294. be angry?

  1295. Let's pray.

  1296. Lord, we

  1297. thank you for

  1298. your word.

  1299. It's

  1300. difficult,

  1301. Lord.

  1302. We acknowledge

  1303. that when

  1304. we are so

  1305. quick to

  1306. become angry,

  1307. when it

  1308. becomes a

  1309. part of who

  1310. we are.

  1311. We ask

  1312. tonight,

  1313. Lord, that

  1314. by the

  1315. Holy Spirit,

  1316. by his

  1317. strength,

  1318. by his

  1319. power,

  1320. we would

  1321. become less

  1322. and less

  1323. angry in our

  1324. day-to-day

  1325. lives,

  1326. whether it

  1327. be short-term

  1328. encounters,

  1329. whether it

  1330. be with

  1331. our brothers

  1332. and our

  1333. friends,

  1334. where

  1335. relationships

  1336. have been

  1337. so hard.

  1338. Lord, we

  1339. thank you

  1340. that even

  1341. despite our

  1342. angry cries,

  1343. yet Jesus

  1344. walks into

  1345. the courtroom

  1346. and he

  1347. says he'll

  1348. pay every

  1349. penny to

  1350. be reconciled

  1351. to us.

  1352. We thank

  1353. you for

  1354. his sacrifice.

  1355. Help us

  1356. to reflect

  1357. on that,

  1358. we ask

  1359. for Jesus'

  1360. sake.

  1361. Amen.

  1362. Amen.
