  1. Let's just bowing our heads, remain standing.

  2. Father, as we come now to, we've heard your word written,

  3. and now, Father, we come to look at it again more carefully

  4. and listen to it more carefully.

  5. Father, you know how easy it is for our thoughts to flit away

  6. and flit away and flit away,

  7. and you know how hard it is, Father, for us to hear your word

  8. and realize how it's speaking to us, us directly.

  9. And so we ask, Father, that the Holy Spirit would do a gentle

  10. but powerful work in our lives to bring your word home to us

  11. in light of who Jesus is and what he has done for us on the cross.

  12. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  13. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. Homes and houses are in the news a lot,

  16. and they have been for the last couple of years.

  17. It's a great concern for a lot of younger people

  18. and a lot of new Canadians as to whether they'll ever be able

  19. to own a home of their own, given how expensive they are.

  20. And it's just a great concern.

  21. And I think part of the reason it's...

  22. I mean, it's always a concern, of course,

  23. because there's something about owning your own house

  24. or your own condo that's yours,

  25. that has a sense of real security to it.

  26. And it's also because, in many ways,

  27. we feel like we live in an insecure world.

  28. And I think we feel we're in an insecure world

  29. because we don't have any roots.

  30. At least a lot of people in our culture,

  31. I'm not saying everyone here in this room don't have roots.

  32. Many of us, in fact, hopefully our roots are sort of in the gospel.

  33. But a lot of our culture, we feel unrooted, uprooted, rootless.

  34. A lot in our culture actually sort of think they can find their roots

  35. by, you know, making up stories or rituals

  36. or try to find the roots in themselves.

  37. But, you know, many people don't think they'll have a job

  38. with the same employer for a long time.

  39. They worry about whether their marriages will last,

  40. whether they'll even get married.

  41. And so there's a lot of insecurity connected to not having roots

  42. and wanting a home, something that you can own.

  43. And the text that we're looking at today

  44. speaks directly into this need for a home

  45. and a need to have roots.

  46. So if you would turn in your Bibles, it would be a great help to me

  47. if you turned in your Bibles and to yourselves,

  48. if you turned in your Bibles to Nehemiah, chapter 2.

    Nehemiah 2 chapter mention

  49. And Victory began reading at verse 11,

  50. but we're going to begin reading at verse 9.

  51. Nehemiah, chapter 2, verse 9.

    Nehemiah 2:9

  52. And what's just happened prior to this

  53. is Nehemiah has a very prestigious position in the court

  54. of the emperor or the king of Persia, mighty empire.

  55. Persia, up until I think a few decades ago,

  56. Iran was called Persia.

  57. So very old, longstanding, powerful empire.

  58. He had a very high position in the court.

  59. He's Jewish as well.

  60. He hears a tale from people who've come back from Jerusalem

  61. of the state of the city, how it's all in ruins,

  62. how the people are sort of in a bit of weakness and confusion,

  63. and there's no walls.

  64. And it really cuts him to his heart,

  65. and he fasts and he prays,

  66. and he senses that God is putting on his heart

  67. to approach the emperor, the king,

  68. to see if the king would allow him to go back

  69. and rebuild the walls and build a fortress

  70. and have proper gates.

  71. And he fasts and prays for four months,

  72. and then the time comes when God opens a door,

  73. and he goes and he speaks to the king,

  74. and there's a great miracle that the king actually says yes.

  75. And what Nehemiah did required a lot of courage

  76. because he would have known, Nehemiah,

  77. that it was this same king

  78. that had earlier stopped a rebuilding effort of the walls

  79. and caused the work to be put into rubble again

  80. and to burn the wood.

  81. And Nehemiah speaks to Artaxerxes,

  82. and Artaxerxes says, yes, you can go back and do this.

  83. So this is what happens next.

  84. So if you have your Bibles, here's verse 9.

  85. So he leaves.

  86. Between verse 8 and verse 9,

  87. they don't tell you about how he gets organized

  88. or how long it took him to leave.

  89. It just now tells you about him coming into the region.

  90. It goes like this.

  91. Then I came to the governors of the province beyond the river

  92. and gave them the king's letters.

  93. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen.

  94. But when Sanballat the Horonite

  95. and Tobiah the Ammonite servant heard this,

  96. it displeased them greatly

  97. that someone had come to seek the welfare of the people of Israel.

  98. Now just sort of pause here.

  99. It's translated very well when it says,

  100. it displeased them greatly.

  101. But it goes even beyond that.

  102. As we're going to see in the text,

  103. they despise the Jewish people.

  104. And the word in the original Hebrew

  105. is that it's implying this great displeasure

  106. is connected with maliciousness

  107. and the hint and the promise of violence.

  108. That's how deeply these people,

  109. they don't know anything about what Nehemiah is going to do.

  110. They just know that he's Jewish,

  111. that he's coming here to do something to help the Jewish people.

  112. And immediately, unbidden, out of them

  113. pours this emotional, visceral dislike

  114. and hatred of anything to do

  115. that's going to benefit the Jewish people.

  116. You know, as I've talked about over the weeks

  117. and over the years,

  118. the Bible doesn't have any doctrine of race.

  119. There's just human beings who are made in the image of God.

  120. But the Bible very deeply addresses the issue of racism

  121. and murderous prejudice.

  122. One of the problems sometimes with people

  123. who interpret the book of Nehemiah

  124. is they miss this aspect.

  125. You might remember, I've talked to you about it before,

  126. in Ezra chapter 4,

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  127. which is all the same book as Nehemiah,

  128. there's this little aside.

  129. And in the aside,

  130. it just paints a picture of over 100 years

  131. and intergenerational hatred,

  132. an intergenerational prejudice.

  133. And here Nehemiah is coming in

  134. almost exactly 100 years after the first decree.

  135. And he comes into a situation

  136. where it's still there and it's still strong

  137. and it's just there as soon as it comes to the fore.

  138. And that's going to be the context

  139. throughout the entire book.

  140. Why it is that Nehemiah is going to do the things he does,

  141. how he goes about and does it,

  142. it's in this context of this great,

  143. great displeasure,

  144. this hatred.

  145. And it's key to notice,

  146. notice what it says here

  147. about how they're the governors of the land.

  148. Or maybe it comes up a little bit later on

  149. that it mentions that they're the governors.

  150. It's a little bit later that it mentions it.

  151. But it's actually really important to understand this,

  152. that it's a little bit like

  153. if you've watched movies set in the south,

  154. you know,

  155. in rural Alabama or Mississippi

  156. or something like that during the 50s

  157. at the height of segregation,

  158. that great evil of segregation in the American south.

  159. And if you've watched some movies

  160. and maybe somebody from the north

  161. comes to do something to help the local population,

  162. the African Americans,

  163. and the locals are terrible

  164. and the locals are bad,

  165. and he goes to complain to the police

  166. or to the judge or the prosecutor,

  167. not realizing at first

  168. that the cop is with the Ku Klux Klan,

  169. the judge is with the Ku Klux Klan,

  170. the prosecutor is with the Ku Klux Klan.

  171. So how do you go to them for help?

  172. They're all not only part of the problem,

  173. they are the problem.

  174. And they have the power and they have the authority.

  175. And it's in this context

  176. that Nehemiah has to function.

  177. So what happens next?

  178. The next bit's actually a bit boring

  179. and a little bit odd,

  180. but the boring bit,

  181. which I'll explain to you,

  182. is actually going to be very significant

  183. for the whole arc of the story.

  184. Let's see what it says.

  185. Verses 11 and following.

  186. So I went to Jerusalem, right?

  187. He goes first to the governors and all.

  188. And now he goes to Jerusalem,

  189. verse 11,

  190. and was there for three days.

  191. Then I arose in the night,

  192. and I and a few men with me,

  193. and I told no one

  194. what my God had put into my heart

  195. to do for Jerusalem.

  196. There was no animal with me

  197. but the one on which I rode.

  198. I went out by night,

  199. by the valley gate,

  200. to the dragon spring,

  201. and to the dung gate,

  202. and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem

  203. that were broken down,

  204. and its gates had been destroyed by fire.

  205. Then I went on to the fountain gate

  206. and to the king's pool,

  207. but there was no room for the animal

  208. that was under me to pass.

  209. Then I went up in the night

  210. by the valley and inspected the wall,

  211. and I turned back

  212. and entered the valley gate

  213. and so returned.

  214. And the officials did not know

  215. where I had gone

  216. or what I was doing,

  217. and I had not yet told the Jews,

  218. that's the people,

  219. the priests,

  220. the nobles,

  221. the officials,

  222. and the rest

  223. who were doing the work.

  224. He hadn't told them his plans.

  225. So here's the thing.

  226. All of these things

  227. are sort of incomprehensible to us,

  228. but if you ever go to Jerusalem

  229. and you sort of look at it

  230. a bit of a higher level,

  231. it's sort of there's a valley,

  232. then a hill,

  233. then a valley,

  234. then a hill,

  235. then a valley.

  236. And back when,

  237. before the wall had been destroyed,

  238. you had walls that encompassed

  239. the valley, the hill,

  240. the valley, the hill,

  241. and the valley,

  242. and all around it.

  243. So it was quite a big wall.

  244. And one of the things that,

  245. so what's going on here

  246. is that Nehemiah,

  247. he obviously came having

  248. a bit of a plan,

  249. but he'd never been to Jerusalem.

  250. And he's like a good consultant.

  251. He's like a good planner.

  252. He has an idea that he knows

  253. he wants to build the wall,

  254. but he has to see

  255. what's really happening

  256. on the ground.

  257. And so he does it secretly at night,

  258. whether it's a full moon

  259. and a cloudless night,

  260. and he can see,

  261. or he can see well enough.

  262. He doesn't have to know

  263. all the little itsy-bitsy details.

  264. He can see very, very clearly.

  265. And obviously,

  266. during the three days

  267. and this other time,

  268. he's made a decision

  269. that all of the other attempts

  270. that there have probably been

  271. over the hundred years

  272. to deal with the wall,

  273. they've probably tried

  274. to deal with the whole wall,

  275. and most of the city is empty.

  276. And what they've just described here

  277. is that he's now come up

  278. to the plan

  279. that he's going to move the wall

  280. to the top of the hill

  281. on this side,

  282. and he's just going to fortify one hill.

  283. That's all he's going to do.

  284. He's going to leave the bulk

  285. of the city unwalled.

  286. But he's going to take a smaller job,

  287. a doable job,

  288. as part of his plan.

  289. Now, once again,

  290. it's important to understand

  291. that the reason he's doing this at night

  292. is because he's picked up very quickly

  293. the deep, settled hatred

  294. of those in authority.

  295. So he can't do this publicly.

  296. He has to do it secretly,

  297. under cover of darkness.

  298. So now he sees

  299. what's going on with the wall.

  300. He's had his ideas

  301. about what he's going to do,

  302. and he's probably had to change them all

  303. in light of what's actually

  304. in front of him.

  305. He might not have realized

  306. that there was a valley,

  307. a hill, a valley, a hill,

  308. a valley,

  309. and that the original wall

  310. encompassed all of it.

  311. He might be looking at it,

  312. and if you ever found his notes,

  313. you might say, well, no wonder

  314. they couldn't build the wall

  315. or it's going to take them too long.

  316. That's just way too big

  317. for our resources

  318. and for our people,

  319. and most of it's all,

  320. it's all just empty anyway,

  321. that whole other section.

  322. So he comes up with a different plan.

  323. And so this next bit,

  324. there's this very helpful word,

  325. but for scholars,

  326. it's an unhelpful word

  327. because they'd like to have it

  328. be more precise.

  329. Look what happens in verse 17.

  330. It says this,

  331. then I said to them,

  332. just before I go,

  333. so here's the thing

  334. about that's frustrating,

  335. then means the next thing

  336. we're going to be told about.

  337. But it does,

  338. then doesn't mean

  339. that it meant like that morning.

  340. We don't know whether he took a week,

  341. two weeks,

  342. three weeks,

  343. a month.

  344. There's a period of time.

  345. And after he's had this period of time,

  346. then he speaks,

  347. verse 17.

  348. Then I said to them,

  349. you see the trouble we are in,

  350. how Jerusalem lies in ruins

  351. with its gates burned.

  352. Come,

  353. let us build the wall of Jerusalem

  354. that we may no longer suffer derision.

  355. This is the big cry,

  356. the leadership cry of Nehemiah.

  357. It's time to build.

  358. Let's arise and build.

  359. And it continues,

  360. verse 18,

  361. and I told them of the hand of my God

  362. that had been upon me for good

  363. and also of the words

  364. that the king had spoken to me.

  365. And they said,

  366. let us rise up and build.

  367. So they strengthened their hands

  368. for the good work.

  369. Now,

  370. just one little aside here.

  371. It's an important aside.

  372. One of the things,

  373. sort of under the pressure

  374. of a type of a belief

  375. in process and technology

  376. and all that,

  377. we tend to have a sense

  378. that if God's hand is upon us,

  379. we won't have enemies.

  380. But one of the important lessons

  381. of the book of Nehemiah

  382. is God's hand can be upon you

  383. and you still might have enemies.

  384. God's hand being upon you

  385. doesn't mean you will no longer have enemies.

  386. God's hand being upon you

  387. means you can stand

  388. in the face of your enemies

  389. and build in the midst of your enemies.

  390. That's what it means.

  391. But here's the thing.

  392. Actually, here.

  393. I think it's going to be on the screen.

  394. Just put your fingers in the Bible here

  395. and turn for a moment

  396. to Proverbs 26, verses 4 to 5.

    Proverbs 26:4–5

  397. Proverbs 26, verses 4 to 5.

    Proverbs 26:4–5

  398. And this little two-verse bit

  399. of Proverbs 26

  400. sort of captures

  401. an issue with all of the Proverbs.

  402. So Proverbs 26, verse 4 says,

    Proverbs 26:4

  403. Answer not a fool according to his folly,

  404. lest you be like him yourself.

  405. Good piece of advice.

  406. Don't answer a fool according to his folly,

  407. lest you be like him yourself.

  408. Answer a fool according to his folly,

  409. lest he be wise in his own eyes.

  410. In other words, you have to answer the fool

  411. because you don't want him

  412. to think he's wise.

  413. So one moment,

  414. those are contradictory pieces of advice.

  415. What's going on?

  416. Well, in a sense,

  417. what God is saying is exactly.

  418. In all of the Proverbs,

  419. the issue is

  420. that you need to have

  421. the wise man or the wise woman

  422. has to, in a sense,

  423. be so attentive to God

  424. and so attentive to the real world

  425. and so attentive to the people

  426. in front of him

  427. that he or she has a sense

  428. about when the right proverb applies.

  429. It's a little bit like

  430. in using secular Proverbs.

  431. We might say,

  432. look before you leap.

  433. But in another context,

  434. we might say,

  435. he who hesitates is lost.

  436. Well, okay, which is it?

  437. Do it right away

  438. or take some time to look, right?

  439. We might say,

  440. too many cooks spoil the broth

  441. or many hands make light work.

  442. Well, which is it?

  443. Well, it just depends

  444. on the specific time.

  445. So this is very important to this.

  446. You see,

  447. the book of Nehemiah

  448. is justly famous

  449. for its lessons on leadership,

  450. its lessons on courage,

  451. its reminder that God is big,

  452. and it's rightly remembered

  453. for this rousing cry,

  454. let us build.

  455. And I have to confess

  456. that especially this week,

  457. I have been wondering

  458. if we as a church

  459. are in a Nehemiah 2 moment.

  460. Like, is it part of God's providence

  461. that we are reading this text?

  462. Like, is it the case

  463. that God is saying to us,

  464. it's time to arise

  465. and get a church building?

  466. Like, let's do that.

  467. Or there's other things to build.

  468. Like, it's time to really

  469. take seriously

  470. planting more churches

  471. in the city of Ottawa.

  472. Let's pray into it.

  473. It's time to take

  474. the training of clergy

  475. and future church leaders

  476. more seriously.

  477. Let's build up Ryle.

  478. You know, it's time

  479. to really take seriously

  480. the need to bring the gospel

  481. to the universities.

  482. It's time to build

  483. a university.

  484. Like, I don't know.

  485. Is God calling us that?

  486. Is that this time?

  487. But, you know,

  488. here's the thing.

  489. So this really is a thing

  490. that we need to take seriously,

  491. but you also have to take seriously

  492. a very different story

  493. in Kings and Chronicles

  494. that God,

  495. that David wants to build

  496. the temple

  497. and God says no.

  498. So which moment are we in?

  499. Well, that's where wisdom comes.

  500. That's where prayer comes.

  501. You can't just take this

  502. and then always say

  503. it means that we have to

  504. arise and build.

  505. No, but we need to take it seriously.

  506. But part of the wisdom

  507. that God wants us to have

  508. by being close to him,

  509. by being attentive

  510. to the meaning of the Holy Spirit,

  511. by looking at the world,

  512. is to know and say to ourselves,

  513. you know what?

  514. I think we're in a Nehemiah 2 moment

  515. in this area,

  516. in this area.

  517. And we need to arise and build.

  518. I don't know.

  519. I think one of the things,

  520. a word of all this passage for us

  521. is to pray into that issue.

  522. Whether it's the church

  523. or some other type of thing,

  524. is God calling us

  525. to build something

  526. at this point in time

  527. in our church's history.

  528. And one of the things

  529. we might say,

  530. well, one moment,

  531. that George,

  532. God can't be calling us

  533. to do this

  534. because it's impossible.

  535. Well, you see,

  536. this is where the hand

  537. of our God

  538. being upon them

  539. is so important.

  540. I mentioned last week

  541. that Nehemiah

  542. was almost definitely a eunuch.

  543. It means he was castrated.

  544. And in terms of Jewish culture

  545. and law at that time,

  546. and even whether or not

  547. he could be in the temple

  548. and his place in leadership,

  549. it was very questionable.

  550. I mean,

  551. in a very real physical way,

  552. he was a broken man.

  553. And he confessed his sins.

  554. And these people are weak

  555. and they're not powerful.

  556. And that's part of the story

  557. is that God doesn't want us

  558. to look at our resources

  559. but who he is

  560. and whether he's calling us

  561. to do something

  562. that only he can do.

  563. not because we are

  564. great and powerful

  565. but because we are

  566. the servants

  567. of a great and powerful God.

  568. And as long as we look

  569. to our own resources,

  570. then it's the devil

  571. speaking to us.

  572. I'm not saying

  573. we should be

  574. completely foolish.

  575. But we need to look at God

  576. and ask what he's calling us

  577. to do.

  578. Now,

  579. I just want to say

  580. one other thing.

  581. I'm not going to talk

  582. about it very long

  583. but it's important

  584. in terms of what I've just said.

  585. It's also important

  586. to understand

  587. the overarching story

  588. of Ezra and Nehemiah.

  589. If you could put up

  590. the first point.

  591. The wall was spilt

  592. to serve the beautiful vision.

  593. The beautiful vision

  594. does not serve the wall.

  595. I talked about that

  596. a couple of weeks ago

  597. about this beautiful vision

  598. in the midst of people

  599. who believed myths

  600. and stories

  601. that legitimized incest

  602. and legitimized

  603. the males

  604. using their rapacious sexuality

  605. on any woman

  606. that they felt like

  607. in a culture

  608. where babies

  609. would be served

  610. and burned to Moloch

  611. where every human being

  612. was viewed as a slave.

  613. There's this overarching,

  614. profound, beautiful vision

  615. of the Bible

  616. about every human being

  617. being made in the image of God

  618. that both men and women

  619. and children

  620. have an integrity

  621. and a dignity

  622. just by virtue

  623. of being human

  624. that's bestowed by God

  625. and not the state

  626. that God wants friends

  627. and children

  628. not slaves

  629. and there's this profound,

  630. beautiful vision

  631. and it's important

  632. if we think

  633. we're in a Nehemiah 2 moment

  634. is that the gospel

  635. doesn't serve buildings.

  636. Buildings should serve

  637. the gospel.

  638. That's our beautiful vision.

  639. So,

  640. there's another thing

  641. which we get

  642. the first hint of

  643. that's going to be

  644. very important

  645. throughout the entire rest

  646. of the book of Nehemiah

  647. and it's important

  648. for us

  649. to recognize as well.

  650. You know,

  651. sometimes we have people

  652. who say they're with us

  653. but they're not with us,

  654. they're really against us

  655. and they plot

  656. and conspire against us

  657. and one of the things

  658. that's going to be coming

  659. very clear

  660. as the book proceeds

  661. is that Nehemiah

  662. is going to have

  663. problems leading

  664. because he has moles.

  665. He has people

  666. who are aligned

  667. with the people

  668. who hate the Jews

  669. and give them information.

  670. Look what happens

  671. in verse 19.

  672. But when

  673. Sanballat the Horonite

  674. and Tobiah the Ammonite servant

  675. and now a new person,

  676. Geshem the Arab,

  677. heard of it,

  678. they jeered at us

  679. and despised us

  680. and said,

  681. what is this,

  682. what, sorry,

  683. and what is this thing

  684. that you are doing?

  685. Are you rebelling

  686. against the king?

  687. Now,

  688. once again,

  689. these are very good words

  690. but we have to understand

  691. that in the original language

  692. it's even

  693. a deeper,

  694. deeper.

  695. They

  696. despise

  697. these people

  698. who are Jewish.

  699. They despise them.

  700. They look down

  701. their nose

  702. at them

  703. and they publicly

  704. point out

  705. everything about them

  706. that from their

  707. twisted world

  708. and way of seeing things

  709. that makes them

  710. look inferior

  711. and petty

  712. and small

  713. and worthless.

  714. That's what jeering

  715. means at them.

  716. And the other thing,

  717. and this is

  718. why it's,

  719. this is part of the reason

  720. why this text

  721. is so important to us

  722. for us to meditate upon

  723. especially in our day and age

  724. where there's a problem

  725. ongoing of cancelling

  726. where

  727. there is

  728. public denunciation

  729. and hatred

  730. and lies

  731. because you see

  732. they just make up a lie.

  733. Notice that again?

  734. What is this thing

  735. that you are doing?

  736. Are you rebelling

  737. against the king?

  738. Let me tell you friends,

  739. figuring out the truth

  740. is hard.

  741. Arguing for the truth

  742. is hard.

  743. It's way easier

  744. just to make up a lie.

  745. lie.

  746. It's always easier

  747. just to lie

  748. on one level.

  749. I'm not saying

  750. it's the right thing.

  751. I'm just saying

  752. on one level,

  753. that's how a lot of people think.

  754. Like, oh gosh,

  755. like why to actually

  756. try to listen well

  757. and, you know,

  758. spend some time

  759. doing research

  760. and listen to both sides

  761. and try to come up

  762. with an argument

  763. and try to sort out

  764. the truth

  765. and be willing

  766. to change your mind.

  767. Why do all of that

  768. when you can just

  769. make up a whole pile of lies?

  770. And here's another thing.

  771. Jeering implies

  772. they're yelling this

  773. in public.

  774. They're public.

  775. They're proud of the fact

  776. that they despise

  777. these people.

  778. They're not embarrassed

  779. about it.

  780. They're not ashamed

  781. about it.

  782. They think they're right

  783. about it.

  784. They call them names.

  785. And here's the thing.

  786. Lies yell.

  787. The truth can be whispered.

  788. The truth can be spoken

  789. plainly and calmly.

  790. But lies yell.

  791. In fact,

  792. when faced with arguments,

  793. the best solution

  794. is to yell louder.

  795. It's to yell louder.

  796. Nothing has changed

  797. much in 2,400 years.

  798. If you could put up

  799. the point just very briefly,

  800. this is one of the things

  801. about the text.

  802. The gospel,

  803. when I say the gospel,

  804. I mean who Jesus is,

  805. what he said and did,

  806. what he accomplished

  807. on the cross,

  808. and what he promises

  809. to those who put

  810. their trust in him.

  811. That's the gospel.

  812. The gospel forms you

  813. to be a person

  814. of the truth

  815. who rejects lies.

  816. I don't know

  817. if you noticed,

  818. it jumped out at me

  819. when I was reading

  820. the John text.

  821. What does it say

  822. when Jesus says,

  823. I'm going to send

  824. the helper?

  825. Talking about the Holy Spirit,

  826. and he calls the Spirit

  827. the Spirit of truth.

  828. If God pours his Holy Spirit

  829. into us,

  830. he's pouring his Holy Spirit

  831. into us for us

  832. to be people

  833. who know the truth,

  834. love the truth,

  835. seek the truth.

  836. We'll change our minds

  837. to stay with the truth,

  838. who want to learn

  839. more of the truth,

  840. and who recognize lies

  841. and reject them.

  842. So how does Nehemiah respond?

  843. Remember I said,

  844. this is one of the things,

  845. he responds quietly,

  846. not by jeering and yelling,

  847. he responds quietly.

  848. Look what he says

  849. in verse 20.

  850. Then I replied to them,

  851. the God of heaven

  852. will make us prosper,

  853. and we as servants

  854. will arise and build,

  855. but you have no portion

  856. or right or claim

  857. in Jerusalem.

  858. Then I replied to them,

  859. the God of heaven

  860. will make us prosper,

  861. and we as servants

  862. will arise and build,

  863. but you have no portion

  864. or right to claim

  865. in Jerusalem.

  866. Basically he says,

  867. God is big.

  868. Yes, we're small.

  869. We're nobodies.

  870. But that's fine,

  871. because God is big.

  872. And yes,

  873. we are nobodies,

  874. but we're his servants.

  875. We're the servants

  876. of the great God of heaven.

  877. And by the way,

  878. you are not with him,

  879. so we are not with you.

  880. You are not him,

  881. so we are not with you.

  882. Now, okay,

  883. I mean the big question is,

  884. there's two sort of

  885. big questions.

  886. One of them,

  887. why didn't they just move?

  888. Right?

  889. I mean,

  890. isn't that what a lot

  891. of us would do

  892. if we somehow bought a house

  893. and we discovered

  894. that all of our neighbors

  895. hated us?

  896. We'd sell the house

  897. and move to another house.

  898. Like, there's other places

  899. to live.

  900. Like, why stay?

  901. Why stay with people

  902. who hate you?

  903. And why does it matter?

  904. In fact,

  905. it's very interesting.

  906. God in his providence,

  907. a person who's a friend of mine,

  908. saw me preparing my sermon

  909. in my local coffee shop

  910. and said,

  911. are you preparing your sermon?

  912. What's it about?

  913. And it's always interesting

  914. when questions like that happen,

  915. because now I'm trying

  916. to think very quickly,

  917. how do I make this sermon

  918. relevant to him?

  919. Like, why does it matter?

  920. Why would it matter to him?

  921. I mean,

  922. other than the fact

  923. that it matters to him

  924. and it should matter

  925. to all Canadians

  926. to recognize

  927. the power of the lie.

  928. And I think all Canadians,

  929. at least on one level,

  930. would say they want

  931. to be people of the truth,

  932. even if they,

  933. in fact,

  934. would rather just make up

  935. and invent lies

  936. rather than engaging

  937. with the truth.

  938. But why don't they just move?

  939. Like, why stay there?

  940. There's lots of other land.

  941. So, to understand it,

  942. I think it's going to be

  943. on the screen.

  944. If you go to Nehemiah 1, verse 9.

    Nehemiah 1:9

  945. Did I tell you Nehemiah 1, 9

  946. or Proverbs 1, 9?

  947. Eh?

  948. Okay, I sent you the wrong text

  949. because I had a mental block.

  950. So, it's not going to be

  951. on the screen.

  952. You just have to listen to it

  953. or look in your Bibles.

  954. Look what happens

  955. in Nehemiah 1, 9.

  956. This is part of,

  957. this is part of Nehemiah's prayer

  958. and it's something

  959. that's really important

  960. to understand

  961. in terms of everything

  962. that happens in Nehemiah.

  963. But it's also something

  964. really important

  965. to understand about

  966. your longing for a home

  967. and for roots.

  968. He says this,

  969. but if you return to me,

  970. this is,

  971. he's saying what God has said.

  972. He's saying,

  973. God has said,

  974. if you return to me

  975. and keep my commandments

  976. and do them,

  977. though your outcasts

  978. are in the outermost parts

  979. of the heaven,

  980. from there I will gather them

  981. and bring them

  982. to the place

  983. that I have chosen

  984. to make my name dwell there.

  985. The place that I have chosen

  986. to make my name dwell there.

  987. if you could put up the point,

  988. all of the Old Testament

  989. and what we know

  990. from the New Testament

  991. makes this big claim.

  992. There is no square inch

  993. of reality

  994. that the triune God

  995. does not say,

  996. mine.

  997. The way he taught that

  998. is on one hand,

  999. he taught it

  1000. because you even see

  1001. at the beginning

  1002. of Genesis chapter 1 and 2

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1003. that he's created

  1004. the whole world,

1005. he's made the whole world

  1006. to be the home

  1007. for human beings.

  1008. You see later on

  1009. in the Psalms,

1010. the earth is the Lord's

  1011. and the fullness thereof

  1012. and all of this,

1013. but partly how he taught them

1014. was not by teaching them

  1015. just the big idea,

1016. but by trying to get them

  1017. to understand it

1018. in one little concrete area.

1019. Why did he want to do it

  1020. in stages like this?

  1021. I don't know.

1022. We have to ask God

1023. when we get to heaven

1024. why he wanted to do it

  1025. in stages,

  1026. but that's what he's saying.

  1027. He's saying,

  1028. you know,

1029. you live in a world

1030. where kings claim the land

  1031. and gods and idols

  1032. claim the land

  1033. and I want people

  1034. to understand

1035. that in this piece of land

  1036. this is mine.

  1037. This is mine.

  1038. It's not the kings,

  1039. it's not the gods,

  1040. it's not even yours,

  1041. it's mine.

  1042. One of the reasons

1043. why we do not have land

  1044. that we need to,

  1045. that there's no type

  1046. of Christian land

1047. is that one of the things

1048. we understand from the gospel

1049. is that the good news

1050. of Jesus is to go

  1051. to every people group

  1052. throughout the planet.

  1053. In fact,

  1054. I hope I haven't forgotten one.

  1055. I did a very quick thing.

  1056. In this congregation,

  1057. part of those

1058. who call Church of the Messiah

  1059. their church home,

  1060. people were born,

1061. who are part of our congregation,

  1062. were born in Canada,

  1063. the United States,

  1064. Mexico,

  1065. England,

  1066. Italy,

  1067. China,

  1068. Taiwan,

  1069. Nigeria,

  1070. Rwanda,

  1071. Uganda,

  1072. Burundi,

  1073. Sudan,

  1074. Ethiopia,

  1075. India,

  1076. Syria,

  1077. Indonesia,

  1078. Barbados,

  1079. Korea,

  1080. and Australia.

1081. And if I missed your,

  1082. and that's just

  1083. where you were born.

  1084. If we added

  1085. first generation Canadians,

  1086. I would be one.

  1087. I'm from Northern Ireland,

  1088. my parents.

  1089. Louise,

  1090. I could have

  1091. a Northern Irish passport.

  1092. Louise could have

  1093. a Polish passport.

  1094. She's a first generation Canadian.

1095. And if we went around

  1096. for first generation Canadians,

1097. there would be a lot more.

1098. But that's part of what Jesus does.

  1099. Jesus' salvation

  1100. is a universal salvation

  1101. that's offered.

1102. And we are to go

  1103. to all the world.

1104. And part of what God

  1105. is doing

  1106. is he wants

  1107. all the world

1108. to come to know him.

  1109. And he wants us

  1110. to begin to know

  1111. that all the world

  1112. is his.

1113. If you could put up

  1114. the next point,

  1115. God says,

  1116. mine,

1117. so you will have a home.

  1118. See,

  1119. that's what he wanted

  1120. for those people.

  1121. He wanted them,

1122. it wasn't just so much

  1123. that he claimed it

  1124. to be mine

  1125. as if it was

  1126. a power play.

  1127. But,

  1128. you see,

  1129. where God is,

  1130. that is where

  1131. our true home is.

  1132. Where God is,

  1133. that is where

  1134. our true home is.

1135. And in Genesis chapter 1 and 2,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1136. we see that God

1137. intended that the entire world

  1138. would be our home,

  1139. that we would understand

  1140. that he's made it

1141. for us to live in.

1142. And that we're to develop

  1143. gardens and cities

  1144. and art

  1145. and song

  1146. and culture

  1147. and business

  1148. and mold it,

  1149. all knowing

1150. that we are with him.

1151. And when we are with him

  1152. and reconcile to him,

  1153. then we are home.

  1154. You know,

  1155. Augustine said,

  1156. God has made us

  1157. for himself

  1158. and our hearts

  1159. are restless

1160. till they rest in him.

  1161. And it's a very true

  1162. and profound thing.

  1163. So,

  1164. why a wall?

  1165. I have to,

  1166. I have to come

  1167. wrap this up.

1168. It's part of the deep

  1169. formation of the Bible.

  1170. So,

  1171. there's not much

1172. you can do about this.

  1173. Other than educate

  1174. and catechize your kids

1175. and pray for your kids.

  1176. But you know,

  1177. if kids watch cartoons,

  1178. apart from the really

  1179. woke ones,

  1180. but even the,

  1181. just the ones

  1182. that we think

  1183. are very safe,

1184. like the old Disney ones

  1185. or something like that,

  1186. what all those

  1187. old Disney films

  1188. and all those

  1189. old cartoons do

  1190. is they form you

  1191. to not pray.

  1192. They form you

1193. to live in a world

  1194. where God

  1195. does not exist.

  1196. Nobody in the cartoons

  1197. praise.

  1198. Nobody thinks

  1199. they should

  1200. to read the Bible.

  1201. Nobody thinks

  1202. they need to trust

  1203. in a Savior.

  1204. Their goals

  1205. are fine.

  1206. They can accomplish

  1207. them by themselves

  1208. with some humor

  1209. and some courage.

  1210. And they teach

  1211. some valuable

  1212. moral lessons.

  1213. I'm not saying

  1214. that people

  1215. shouldn't watch them,

  1216. but it forms you

  1217. to believe

  1218. that you live

  1219. in a world

  1220. that God

  1221. does not exist.

  1222. stories like this

  1223. form you

  1224. to understand

  1225. that the real world

  1226. matters.

  1227. Our friends here

  1228. who are

  1229. from India

  1230. can tell you

  1231. that in India

  1232. Hinduism,

  1233. in a sense,

  1234. doesn't concern itself

  1235. with history.

  1236. It has myths

  1237. and rituals.

  1238. The goal

  1239. is a type

  1240. of private

  1241. illumination

  1242. that will move

  1243. you to break

  1244. the spell

  1245. of reincarnation

  1246. and reincarnation

  1247. to merge

  1248. with God.

  1249. And if you

  1250. have that,

  1251. that it's just

  1252. something private,

1253. it means in a sense

  1254. it doesn't matter

  1255. about the poor.

  1256. It doesn't matter

  1257. about industry.

  1258. It doesn't matter

  1259. about art.

  1260. It doesn't matter

  1261. about education

  1262. because these things

  1263. are all just illusion.

  1264. They're all things

  1265. to pass away.

  1266. But the Bible

1267. at a very deep level

  1268. is forming us

  1269. that you need

1270. to care for the wall.

  1271. The wall is going

1272. to serve the beautiful vision.

  1273. The wall is going

  1274. to help to protect

  1275. them from being robbed

  1276. and being beaten

  1277. and being raped.

  1278. It's going to become

  1279. a place that can

  1280. become a platform

1281. to do all of these

  1282. other things.

  1283. It's why it isn't

  1284. just the case

  1285. that I can just

  1286. present you some

  1287. ancient myth

  1288. about Jesus

  1289. but that Jesus

  1290. isn't just some

  1291. ancient myth

  1292. but that Jesus

  1293. actually came

  1294. and lived amongst us

  1295. and walked amongst us.

  1296. He walked the streets

  1297. of Jerusalem.

1298. He died upon a cross.

1299. He died upon a cross

  1300. and historians

  1301. can pick

1302. he died on the cross

1303. on one of two days

  1304. because it happened

  1305. in history

1306. and he rose from the dead

  1307. and scholars can say

1308. it was on one of two days

1309. that he rose from the dead

  1310. and history matters

  1311. and the body matters

  1312. and the physical matters

1313. and that's why it is

  1314. that Christians

1315. this is what I shared

  1316. with my Jewish friend

  1317. who asked me

  1318. about this yesterday

  1319. I said that's why

  1320. Christians and Jews

  1321. especially Christians

  1322. no offense

  1323. wherever we go

  1324. we've set up hospitals

  1325. we set up schools

1326. we care for the poor

  1327. the body matters

  1328. culture matters

1329. it's why we have art

1330. it's why we have poetry

  1331. and song

  1332. and hymns

  1333. our physical existence

  1334. matters

  1335. and it's all part

  1336. of this forming

  1337. of what we see

  1338. by the fact

  1339. that the wall

  1340. has to be built

  1341. and the wall

  1342. serves us

  1343. you know

  1344. I'm going to read

1345. it's not going to be up there

  1346. I'm going to read

  1347. Isaiah chapter 53

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  1348. verse

  1349. just in closing

  1350. Isaiah chapter 53

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  1351. as I bring this

  1352. to a close

  1353. Isaiah 53

  1354. 3-6

  1355. remember I said

1356. that this is a story

  1357. about Nehemiah

  1358. leading a despised people

  1359. in the face

  1360. of their despisers

  1361. who are in positions

  1362. of authority

  1363. how he works

  1364. to build the wall

1365. and I was very mindful

  1366. this week

  1367. of Isaiah 53

  1368. 3-6

  1369. he was despised

  1370. and rejected

  1371. by men

  1372. a man of sorrows

  1373. and acquainted

  1374. with grief

  1375. and as one

  1376. from whom men

  1377. hide their faces

  1378. he was despised

1379. and we esteemed him not

  1380. surely he has borne

  1381. our griefs

  1382. and carried our sorrows

  1383. we esteemed him stricken

  1384. smitten by God

  1385. and afflicted

  1386. but he was pierced

  1387. for our transgressions

  1388. he was crushed

  1389. for our iniquities

  1390. upon him

  1391. was the chastisement

  1392. that brought us peace

  1393. and with his wounds

  1394. we are healed

  1395. all we like sheep

  1396. have gone astray

  1397. we have turned

1398. everyone to his own way

  1399. and the Lord

  1400. has laid on him

1401. the iniquity of us all

  1402. Jesus was despised

  1403. so that the despised

  1404. and the despisers

  1405. could repent

  1406. and be loved

  1407. by the triune God

  1408. he was despised

  1409. so that the despised

  1410. and the despisers

  1411. could repent

  1412. and be loved

  1413. by the triune God

1414. you could put up the point

  1415. the triune God

  1416. is real

  1417. so he acts

  1418. in real history

  1419. so he can be

  1420. really known

  1421. and Jesus

  1422. the next point

1423. is forming the real you

  1424. to follow him

  1425. and make him known

  1426. in the real world

  1427. Jesus is forming

  1428. the real you

  1429. to follow him

  1430. and make him known

  1431. in the real world

1432. you know in a sense

  1433. there's many people

  1434. in our culture

  1435. who think that

1436. to come to a church

  1437. like this

  1438. and believe the things

  1439. that we believe

  1440. is completely

  1441. and utterly foolish

  1442. and there's many people

1443. who think that it's evil

  1444. follow Jesus anyway

  1445. make a difference

  1446. in the city anyway

  1447. share the gospel anyway

  1448. build anyway

1449. and if you and I

  1450. think that there's a way

  1451. of behaving

  1452. so that people will

  1453. though people who think

  1454. that way about us

  1455. will not like us

  1456. dislike us less

1457. I just want to say

  1458. to you

1459. for people who hate us

  1460. hate the things

  1461. that we stand for

  1462. before this service

  1463. they had 19 reasons

  1464. after this

  1465. they'll have 21

  1466. don't think about it

  1467. people hate you

  1468. for being a Christian

  1469. love them anyway

  1470. share the gospel anyway

  1471. pray for them anyway

  1472. do good anyway

  1473. build anyway

  1474. and in all things

  1475. pray for them

  1476. and if you're here

  1477. and you don't know

  1478. where you are

  1479. with Jesus

  1480. if you're here

  1481. and you don't know

  1482. where you are

  1483. with Jesus

1484. it is so worth it

  1485. because he loves

  1486. the real you

  1487. he wants to fit

  1488. the real you

  1489. for a real life

  1490. with him

  1491. in this real world

  1492. and at the end

  1493. of the end

  1494. of the end

  1495. there is a real

  1496. new heaven

  1497. and new earth

  1498. you will have

  1499. a resurrection body

  1500. and be with him

  1501. you know

  1502. it's very interesting

  1503. the Bible begins

  1504. with God

  1505. having human beings

  1506. in a garden

  1507. in the center

  1508. of the world

  1509. if you go back

  1510. afterwards

  1511. and you read

  1512. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1513. 21 and 22

1514. it ends with a city

  1515. and in the center

  1516. of the city

  1517. is a garden

  1518. in all things

  1519. that's what God

  1520. is making us for

  1521. to live with others

  1522. under his rule

  1523. to have homes

  1524. in him

  1525. that are rooted

  1526. and deep

  1527. and thick

  1528. and have hope

  1529. please stand

  1530. let's bow our heads

  1531. in prayer

  1532. Father we

  1533. we ask that you

  1534. bring this story

  1535. home to us

  1536. in a real

  1537. and deep way

  1538. and

  1539. we thank you

  1540. Father

  1541. that

  1542. you claim

  1543. every single

1544. bit of who we are

  1545. and that when

1546. Jesus died on the cross

  1547. he died for

  1548. every single

1549. bit of who we are

  1550. and you want us

  1551. to give

  1552. every single

1553. bit of who we are

  1554. to you

  1555. and Father

  1556. you are taking

  1557. every single

1558. bit of who we are

  1559. and you are

  1560. fitting us

  1561. for resurrection

  1562. bodies

  1563. in a new heaven

  1564. and a new earth

  1565. where we will dwell

  1566. with you

  1567. and with others

  1568. for all eternity

  1569. and

  1570. and so Father

  1571. we give you

  1572. thanks and praise

  1573. that you claim

  1574. all of us

  1575. that Jesus died

  1576. for all of us

  1577. and we ask

  1578. that your Holy Spirit

  1579. would so move

  1580. in our lives

  1581. that all of us

1582. that all of makes us

  1583. us

  1584. that we would recognize

  1585. that it's

  1586. it's to serve you

  1587. and to give back

  1588. to you

  1589. and that

  1590. you will only

  1591. make us more whole

  1592. whether it's

  1593. with our money

  1594. whether it's

  1595. with our sexuality

  1596. whether it's

  1597. with our time

  1598. our plan

  1599. our creativity

  1600. our intelligence

  1601. our thinking

  1602. Father

  1603. we give you

  1604. thanks and praise

1605. that you claim it all

1606. and have redeemed it all

1607. and help us to live

  1608. under your rule

1609. and under your gentle hand

1610. making it all for you

1611. giving it all to you

  1612. and we ask this

1613. in the name of Jesus

1614. your Son and our Savior

  1615. and therefore

  1616. we ask more

  1617. thank you

  1618. thank you

  1619. thank you
