  1. Let me now invite Kelly to read to us from Genesis chapter 3, verses 1 to 7.

    Genesis 3:1–7

  2. Thanks, Kelly.

  3. Neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

  4. But the serpent said to the woman, you will not surely die.

  5. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  6. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.

  7. And she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

  8. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.

  9. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

  10. Kelly read for us from the very famous story of the Garden of Eden when we read here about a talking serpent.

  11. And in the New Testament, in the book of Revelation, John the Apostle tells us that this serpent is Satan who came to deceive humanity in the very beginning.

  12. Now, this is a very famous story, and for Christianity, for Christians, we believe it's the explanation of everything that's wrong in the world today.

  13. It comes from right here.

  14. And sometimes people will come to the Garden of Eden story, and they will see a talking serpent and a garden and two trees.

  15. And that the world was broken by eating fruit from a tree.

  16. And they'll say, as modern people, what?

  17. A talking animal?

  18. These trees, this feels arbitrary.

  19. This feels like a legend.

  20. It feels like a myth.

  21. And so I just want to say, hold on on that and press pause and come back next week.

  22. Because next week I will talk about the serpent and the garden and the two trees a little bit more and why you can trust this.

  23. So come back next week for that.

  24. Today, I want to begin this series for a month in Genesis 3 by focusing on the main point of Genesis 3, 1-7.

  25. And that's to tell us what happened to us, what's wrong with us, why we as human beings are broken.

  26. And that's really the big idea here.

  27. So let's think about that this week.

  28. Edgar Allan Poe wrote a series of detective stories in the 19th century about a detective called Detective Dupont, a Parisian, French detective.

  29. And in one of the stories, there's a letter stolen from the queen's bedroom.

  30. And the police think they know who did it.

  31. And they go to the man's house.

  32. And they ransack his house.

  33. And they cannot find the letter anywhere.

  34. And so they bring in famous Detective Dupont.

  35. And as soon as he walks in the room, he sees at the entryway a rack of cards where the man kept his mail.

  36. And right there at the very front of the rack of cards, on the top of the mail stack, is the queen's letter.

  37. And he turns and he says to them, it was hidden from you in plain sight.

  38. That's where we get that famous phrase.

  39. And when it comes to the world, Simon was just praying about this, we look around and we say,

  40. what is the reason, what is the cause for why we cannot fix our society?

  41. Why can we not stop the next war from starting?

  42. Why can we not stop the string of abuses that we're always discovering?

  43. Why can we not stop the corruption in governments and businesses and corporate entities?

  44. Why can we not fix our relationships and our families?

  45. And we're always asking questions like that.

  46. And I think the answer is hidden in plain sight.

  47. And you can look today and say, it's me.

  48. It's my heart.

  49. That's why we can't fix it.

  50. It's us.

  51. It's humanity.

  52. It's hidden in plain sight.

  53. It's always been visible that no matter how good our technology becomes,

  54. no matter how much education we give to people,

  55. we can't stop these basic problems.

  56. And it's right here.

  57. It's in the human heart.

  58. And this is what Christians call sin.

  59. And so people today will say, they'll look at sin, a word like that,

  60. and some people will be romantic about the concept of sin.

  61. You know, they'll say sin is just that nice little indulgence,

  62. the idea in the modern world that sometimes it's good to be a little bad.

  63. And most people on the flip side, I think, in a modern city, in our city like Edinburgh,

  64. will say this concept of sin, the Christian concept,

  65. it's puritanical, intolerant, narrow position of traditionalism.

  66. Right?

  67. And actually, all the Bible means by it is that this is the word that just describes the fact

  68. that we are not who we're supposed to be,

  69. that we're broken from the inside out,

  70. that we're not the people God made us to be.

  71. That's all it means.

  72. We miss the mark.

  73. We have self-centeredness instead of Godwardness.

  74. And so that's what this chapter is about.

  75. What broke the world?

  76. And the first answer we're given is, it's us.

  77. It's us.

  78. And so let's think about that this morning.

  79. And here's my thesis for you.

  80. I think it's fair to say, according to the Bible,

  81. that you cannot really know yourself,

  82. and you cannot really understand what's going on in the world,

  83. what's wrong with the world,

  84. until you've captured this,

  85. that the problem is here.

  86. In each one of our hearts.

  87. And so, here's what happens.

  88. How did the world break in four movements it broke?

  89. With an attitude, a manipulation, a temptation, and an exchange.

  90. All right, so let's think about those four movements.

  91. First, an attitude.

  92. If you look at verse 1, you'll see the serpent's more crafty,

  93. the King James says subtle, either word, subtle,

  94. than any other beast of the field.

  95. And so he says to the woman,

  96. did God actually say, or did God really say,

  97. you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  98. So let me say that in a slightly different way.

  99. You could read it like this.

  100. The serpent is asking,

  101. did God really say that you cannot eat of all the trees?

  102. And so the serpent is not telling a lie here.

  103. He's telling the truth.

  104. Did God really say that you can't eat of all the trees?

  105. And the answer is yes.

  106. He did say you cannot eat of all the trees.

  107. There is one tree you cannot eat of.

  108. And so he's not saying a lie at first, not at all.

  109. What he's doing is he's telling the truth,

  110. but he's repositioning.

  111. And what I mean by that is he's making the truth seem ridiculous.

  112. So he adds one little word.

  113. Did he really say you can't eat of all the trees?

  114. Did he really say that there's one tree you're not allowed to eat from?

  115. And you see the subtlety of the beginning of what's wrong with the world.

  116. The subtlety is it's attitude.

  117. It's an attitude.

  118. It's snarkiness.

  119. Did God really, did he really do that?

  120. And it's the same way that you might sit around the water cooler at work

  121. and your boss comes to a group of people

  122. and maybe the team didn't quite get the job done exactly right.

  123. And the boss says, can you guys go and fix this?

  124. Can you guys go and take care of the business that you were supposed to take care of?

  125. And the boss comes and he has every power and every right to do that

  126. if he does it with respect, right?

  127. But as soon as he walks away, somebody in the group inevitably does what?

  128. Did he really just come and say that to us?

  129. You know, immediately it's snark.

  130. It's an attitude.

  131. And what has happened in that, you see what the sin is?

  132. It's repositioning.

  133. And here's the reposition.

  134. Is that when, as soon as Satan takes Eve's heart and gets her to snark at God like he does,

  135. she has placed herself as the judge over God.

  136. God is the one who gave the rules, but now, did he really say that?

  137. Now, I'm now the judge over the person who said it to me.

  138. The person who said it to me was seeking to tell me what to do,

  139. but now, if I snark at them, I've become the power.

  140. I've become the judge in the situation.

  141. I've inverted that pyramid.

  142. And in other words, he's trying to get her through this word,

  143. actually, really, to say, did the creator of the universe actually just tell me what to do?

  144. Did he really just do that?

  145. Richard Dawkins, a very famous atheist of our lifetime,

  146. in one of his books, he writes this,

  147. The unhealthy preoccupation of early Christian theologians with sin.

  148. That's the headline.

  149. They could have devoted their pages and their sermons to extolling the sky splashed with stars or mountains

  150. and green forest seas and the dawn choruses.

  151. These are occasionally mentioned,

  152. but the Christian focus seems to overwhelmingly be sin, sin, sin, sin, sin, sin, sin, sin, sin.

  153. What a nasty little preoccupation to have always dominating your life.

  154. Now, the irony of what Dawkins writes here is he says,

  155. the one immoral thing, the one sin that must never exist is to actually believe in sin.

  156. So he believes in sin in order to condemn sin.

  157. He thinks there is something immoral, and that's you actually believing in sin.

  158. Right?

  159. But you see, if you read this paragraph, if you read his books,

  160. one of the things you realize is these are not arguments.

  161. These are not arguments against God.

  162. This is not, here's the ten reasons the cosmological argument doesn't work.

  163. No, not at all.

  164. What is this?

  165. It's attitude.

  166. It's snark.

  167. And, you know, I don't want to point out Dawkins here,

  168. though it's very apparent with him, but it's in all of us.

  169. The attitude is in all of us.

  170. Our problem is not arguments.

  171. Our problem is our attitude.

  172. Snark at God.

  173. Did God really say?

  174. And most of the time we see that come out in our relationships,

  175. in the way we treat other people,

  176. in the way that we say to other people in our lives,

  177. probably the people we love most,

  178. did you really just say that to me?

  179. Snark.

  180. Attitude.

  181. It's the beginning of all that's wrong with the world.

  182. And so what's happening here is a pyramid.

  183. If you think of a pyramid, you know, traditional pyramid, triangle,

  184. God, the maker, the creator is at the top,

  185. and all of us creatures are at the bottom.

  186. But as soon as Satan says, did he really?

  187. What has happened?

  188. Eve's heart, Adam's heart, who was right there with her,

  189. has started to invert the pyramid and put ourselves,

  190. put me at the top and put God at the bottom like a creature.

  191. I am now, I have now become his judge.

  192. Now, sometimes the theologians, they'll say this,

  193. the commentators, they'll say, what is this posture?

  194. What is this attitude in one word?

  195. And I think in one word you could say it like this,

  196. it is ingratitude.

  197. So it's the attitude that begins to say,

  198. God the maker is not actually good.

  199. God the maker, he's, you know, did he really,

  200. he's withholding something from me.

  201. What is he withholding?

  202. That's the beginning of all sin, an attitude.

  203. Now, secondly, and we can do the next two very quickly,

  204. because they're really just the development of the attitude.

  205. And secondly, it's manipulation.

  206. So if you look down at verse three, you can see what happens.

  207. Verse two and three, the woman says to the serpent,

  208. we may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,

  209. but God said, you shall not eat of the fruit of the tree

  210. that is in the midst of the garden,

  211. neither shall you touch it lest you die.

  212. Now, what's happening here is we see very subtly,

  213. and you've got to pay close attention to see this,

  214. but the snark, the attitude is starting to grip hold of Eve's heart.

  215. And the way you know that is because of a very common practice

  216. maybe you've experienced.

  217. I've never experienced this.

  218. You'll know why I'm joking in a second,

  219. but have you ever been in the kitchen,

  220. in an argument with your beloved,

  221. or your friend, or your sibling,

  222. your partner of any kind,

  223. and you know that you have an argument.

  224. But what you do is you add one or two clauses to the argument,

  225. one or two words,

  226. just to twist the truth slightly

  227. to guarantee victory in this argument, right?

  228. You say, you know, you don't just say,

  229. you did this, you say,

  230. you always do this, right?

  231. I don't know if you've had that experience,

  232. but Eve here does exactly that.

  233. We know that something's going on

  234. because if you notice closely,

  235. what does she say?

  236. She said, yeah, he did give us a command.

  237. And he said, you may not eat of it,

  238. but she adds a little clause in verse three.

  239. And the little clause is, you may not touch it.

  240. And if you go back to chapter two,

  241. you will find that nowhere did God ever say that.

  242. And so what she's doing is she's manipulating the truth.

  243. And Adam is right there alongside her,

  244. letting it happen all the way.

  245. And she's twisting it.

  246. And you see that something has gotten a hold of the heart.

  247. And she's starting to manipulate the truth a little bit.

  248. And the attitude of ingratitude

  249. has become a twisting of what God actually said.

  250. And two great mistakes here happen at the same time.

  251. One, the beginning of world history,

  252. the beginning, the first moment in all of world history

  253. where people tend to start thinking

  254. the real God is a God of rules, rules, rules, rules,

  255. rules starts in that moment.

  256. That God is not a God of love.

  257. That God does not love me.

  258. That God is not out for my good.

  259. God is just out to tell me what to do

  260. and to control me

  261. and to keep me away from things.

  262. And he's withholding something from me.

  263. And there it is, the twist, the turn,

  264. the manipulation of language.

  265. He always does this.

  266. Doesn't he always tell me just to control,

  267. to take away my freedoms?

  268. And you see it happening right here.

  269. And it's Satan saying to her,

  270. God is a, you know, he's saying,

  271. he's implanting a seed

  272. in the lives of the first humans

  273. that said God is a cosmic killjoy.

  274. And you need to know that.

  275. You need to believe that.

  276. And that is exactly what's taking place here.

  277. In J.R.R. Tolkien's series,

  278. The Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth,

  279. one of the great characters,

  280. the most important character maybe,

  281. is the ring, right?

  282. And what is the ring?

  283. What happens, the ring of power in his stories,

  284. the ring of power,

  285. when it's placed upon the finger,

  286. we're told by Tolkien in the books

  287. that it takes over the heart

  288. and slowly corrupts.

  289. And one of the interesting things in the books

  290. is that Frodo, the lead character,

  291. the protagonist,

  292. he is able, unlike almost everyone,

  293. in a surprising way,

  294. to stand against the corrupting power of the ring

  295. for longer,

  296. though it will get him eventually.

  297. And you see, the snark, the attitude,

  298. did he really just say that?

  299. Was the first moment in human history

  300. where Satan slid that ring

  301. on the finger of humanity.

  302. And then the twisting of the language,

  303. the manipulation of what God actually said,

  304. is the unfolding of the corrupting power.

  305. That now the heart is beginning to corrupt.

  306. It's changing.

  307. There's a transformation taking place.

  308. And we see that even in the subtlety of her language.

  309. And so that leads, thirdly,

  310. to the objective temptation.

  311. So if you look down at verse four and five,

  312. but the serpent turns and he says to her,

  313. you will not surely die.

  314. God had said,

  315. if you disobey, you'll choose death, not life.

  316. But he says, you won't actually die.

  317. God knows that if you eat of it,

  318. your eyes will be open

  319. and you'll be like God,

  320. knowing good and evil.

  321. So here, an objective external temptation

  322. comes in through his words.

  323. You will be like God,

  324. knowing good and evil.

  325. Now, the essence of the fall,

  326. let me bring it to a head and say,

  327. here's the essence of all that's wrong,

  328. our title today.

  329. The essence of all that's wrong

  330. is the belief in the heart

  331. that I, we cannot trust God.

  332. That he is not good

  333. and that he does not want our good.

  334. That's really what took place here in this moment.

  335. And again, it's not an argument.

  336. It's not,

  337. what's wrong with our hearts,

  338. it's not that we've been convinced

  339. that the problem of evil

  340. and the cosmological argument

  341. doesn't work

  342. and that all the arguments out there

  343. intellectually don't work

  344. and so we don't believe in God.

  345. The issue, that is not the issue.

  346. The issue with all of us,

  347. disbelief in God,

  348. our unbelief,

  349. the issue is attitude

  350. that says,

  351. I cannot trust him.

  352. That's the real issue at the heart.

  353. And so what Satan does

  354. is he says to her,

  355. he says to her,

  356. it's not just that,

  357. it's not just that you will be like God.

  358. He says,

  359. you will be like God,

  360. but it's not just that you'll be like God

  361. knowing good and evil.

  362. What is he tempting her with?

  363. What is he asking her to believe?

  364. And this is it.

  365. He is saying to her,

  366. it's not just that you will be like God,

  367. but you will be God-like.

  368. You know, when Satan said,

  369. look, if you disobey,

  370. if you reach out and you take and you eat,

  371. what should Eve have said

  372. in that moment to him

  373. when he said,

  374. you will be like God,

  375. she could have said,

  376. I already am like God.

  377. God made me in his image.

  378. He gave me harmony and peace

  379. in a garden and a home

  380. and a life of joy

  381. and righteousness and glory.

  382. I'm like God as much as I can be.

  383. But what he's saying is not,

  384. you will be like God,

  385. but if you eat,

  386. you will become God-like.

  387. And so he says,

  388. there is one thing

  389. God does not want you to know,

  390. and that's that

  391. if you will just reach out,

  392. you will eat.

  393. You will be like him

  394. knowing good and evil.

  395. And so this language

  396. of knowing good and evil

  397. is tricky for us

  398. as modern people,

  399. but this is actually

  400. just a Hebrew euphemism,

  401. and it's a Hebrew euphemism

  402. for wisdom.

  403. So we say,

  404. like God,

  405. knowing good and evil,

  406. what exactly does that mean?

  407. It just simply means

  408. you will have the wisdom,

  409. the status of God.

  410. You'll have the mind of God.

  411. You'll have the divinity of God.

  412. You will be like God

  413. and being able to know

  414. as much as God knows.

  415. In other words,

  416. he's saying the very secret

  417. that he's holding from you

  418. is that he doesn't want you

  419. to know that if you eat,

  420. you will be equal to

  421. or greater than him.

  422. You will be God.

  423. You will be able

  424. to define yourself,

  425. your own life,

  426. your own way.

  427. You'll be able to say,

  428. it's my choice

  429. who I'm going to be.

  430. It's expressive individualism

  431. of the ancient world.

  432. That was the real temptation.

  433. And Adam, Eve,

  434. both in this moment

  435. begin to believe

  436. God is not a giver of gifts.

  437. He is hiding the truth from me.

  438. He is power hungry.

  439. I've got to take things

  440. into my own hands.

  441. I've got to define

  442. who I'm going to be

  443. with my own life.

  444. And so the exchange.

  445. In verse 6,

  446. Eve,

  447. fourthly the exchange.

  448. She saw that the tree,

  449. notice the sight verbs,

  450. she sees the tree

  451. is good for food.

  452. She sees that it's a delight,

  453. a delight to her eyes,

  454. that the tree was desired

  455. to make one wise,

  456. to achieve this goal

  457. of divinity,

  458. of divine status.

  459. So she takes and she eats

  460. and she gives some to Adam as well

  461. who was with her all the way.

  462. Now, when it says that

  463. she saw that it was good,

  464. you've heard that language before

  465. if you've read the Bible so far.

  466. In Genesis 1,

  467. seven times,

  468. it says that God made something

  469. and then what?

  470. He saw that it was good.

  471. And now she looks out at the tree

  472. and she saw that it was good.

  473. What's happening?

  474. Moses, the writer,

  475. is taking the language of creation

  476. and trying to show you

  477. Eve in this moment

  478. believes that she's becoming

  479. a creator.

  480. She saw that it was good

  481. just like God saw

  482. that His creation was good.

  483. She sees this really can

  484. make me my own person.

  485. I can be a creator.

  486. I can be like God.

  487. I can take divinity into my life.

  488. And so this great reversal

  489. takes place.

  490. We could call it

  491. an exchange takes place

  492. where in this moment,

  493. Adam and Eve choose

  494. not to be creatures.

  495. They seek to be the creator.

  496. And in that moment,

  497. the total undoing

  498. of all of humanity takes place.

  499. Everything is broken.

  500. You might look at this today

  501. and say,

  502. what in the world is wrong

  503. with picking fruit from a tree?

  504. It feels incredibly arbitrary.

  505. Why would God say,

  506. don't eat of a tree

  507. or you're going to break

  508. the whole world?

  509. And I'll say a little bit more

  510. about this next week.

  511. Let me just say this now.

  512. These two trees,

  513. the tree of life

  514. and the tree of the knowledge

  515. of good and evil,

  516. this tree of wisdom,

  517. they're there as a choice.

  518. We might call them

  519. with a little lowercase s

  520. like sacraments,

  521. signs, symbols,

  522. true historical realities,

  523. physical entities

  524. pointing to something

  525. bigger and greater

  526. beyond themselves.

  527. And what is that

  528. that they're signaling?

  529. What are they signing?

  530. And it's simply this.

  531. Look, you come to a passage

  532. like this and you read through it

  533. and you say,

  534. there is so much mystery here.

  535. There's so much I don't know.

  536. There's so much I don't understand.

  537. Yes, you've got to just

  538. take what you're given.

  539. And when you take

  540. what you're given,

  541. what are you being asked

  542. in the tree?

  543. Not don't eat of the tree.

  544. What are they being asked?

  545. In the infancy of humanity,

  546. in the youth of humanity,

  547. the earliest days,

  548. they're simply being asked

  549. to say,

  550. I trust you.

  551. I don't know exactly

  552. what the trees are all about

  553. and we still don't.

  554. There's a lot of mystery here.

  555. But what they're simply

  556. being asked is to say,

  557. I believe God made me

  558. and I believe he's good

  559. and I trust him.

  560. And instead,

  561. they chose to be the creator

  562. instead of the creature.

  563. And they exchanged

  564. all that's good

  565. with all that's wrong.

  566. And in this moment,

  567. they broke the world.

  568. And so we could say

  569. that the fall,

  570. the fall,

  571. that's what we call

  572. this moment,

  573. is pride that leads

  574. to ingratitude,

  575. that leads to an exchange

  576. of creator-creature relations

  577. where we said,

  578. I don't want to be

  579. the image of God,

  580. I want to be God.

  581. I want to be God.

  582. Friedrich Nietzsche,

  583. famous atheist

  584. of the 19th century,

  585. he wrote a book

  586. called

  587. Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

  588. And in it,

  589. one of the characters,

  590. Zarathustra,

  591. who it's about,

  592. he has,

  593. boy,

  594. a compelling moment.

  595. He says this,

  596. But to reveal my heart

  597. to you,

  598. friends,

  599. if there is a God,

  600. how could I stand

  601. not to be God?

  602. Therefore,

  603. there is no God.

  604. You see,

  605. it's not argument,

  606. it's attitude.

  607. Did you hear,

  608. he says this,

  609. But to reveal my heart

  610. to you,

  611. my friends,

  612. Zarathustra says,

  613. if there is a God,

  614. how in the world

  615. could I stand

  616. not to be?

  617. Therefore,

  618. there is no God.

  619. And all the arguments,

  620. I think,

  621. that are out there

  622. are from a place

  623. where we actually

  624. all believe in God,

  625. but our attitude

  626. is preventing us

  627. from seeing it.

  628. The snark.

  629. It's at the bottom

  630. of who we are.

  631. And when we say,

  632. I don't know

  633. that God exists,

  634. I think science

  635. has replaced God.

  636. That's not an argument,

  637. it's an attitude.

  638. It's a position.

  639. It begins

  640. with an attitude.

  641. When we say,

  642. every time we say,

  643. the pleasure

  644. of giving in

  645. to all my lust

  646. is okay,

  647. what's going on

  648. in that moment?

  649. It's an attitude

  650. of unbelief.

  651. It says,

  652. I don't think

  653. that God's way

  654. can actually fulfill me,

  655. and so I'm going

  656. to take it

  657. into my own hands.

  658. Every time,

  659. boy,

  660. this one,

  661. I heard somebody

  662. say this one recently,

  663. it came close to me.

  664. Every time we struggle

  665. with anxiety

  666. and worry

  667. and we constantly think

  668. things aren't going well,

  669. what if things don't go well,

  670. what are we doing?

  671. We're saying,

  672. boy,

  673. every time I say,

  674. I've got a plan

  675. for success

  676. in this local church

  677. here,

  678. St. Columba's,

  679. and it's not going

  680. exactly the way

  681. I've mapped out,

  682. what am I saying?

  683. I'm saying,

  684. I don't know

  685. that God

  686. is going to get this right.

  687. As I heard

  688. a pastor say recently,

  689. you know,

  690. I better take it

  691. into my hands,

  692. and that is

  693. the attitude

  694. of the garden,

  695. the snark.

  696. I do not trust him.

  697. I'm not willing

  698. to believe,

  699. to trust

  700. that God

  701. has my best interests

  702. at heart.

  703. And so there's

  704. an exchange of truth

  705. for who we are,

  706. made to be created,

  707. dependent,

  708. trusting the good God

  709. for saying,

  710. I want to define

  711. who I am,

  712. I want to be

  713. my own God.

  714. Boy,

  715. let me reveal

  716. my heart to you.

  717. Zarathustra said,

  718. is this you?

  719. He said,

  720. my heart is,

  721. if there is a God,

  722. then that means

  723. I'm not him,

  724. and boy,

  725. that means

  726. there is no God.

  727. What can we do?

  728. The solution.

  729. We've got three more weeks

  730. to really dig

  731. into the depth

  732. of what this means,

  733. the consequences,

  734. the hope

  735. that's going to come

  736. later in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  737. And to think

  738. really deeply about it,

  739. but let me finish

  740. today with this.

  741. What can be done?

  742. What is the solution?

  743. Is there hope?

  744. For this situation,

  745. Adam and Eve

  746. in the garden

  747. exchanged

  748. the harmony,

  749. the peace,

  750. the home

  751. that we were made for

  752. for something

  753. far lesser.

  754. For this broken world

  755. that we now live in,

  756. for self-centeredness

  757. as a pattern of life,

  758. for the fact that

  759. because we all have

  760. this attitude

  761. deep down in our hearts

  762. against God,

  763. we all pretend

  764. we're all gods,

  765. and so we're in

  766. a constant state

  767. of anger

  768. and discord

  769. and war

  770. and argument

  771. with people

  772. all the time

  773. all around us.

  774. This is the exchange

  775. that took place

  776. in the beginning

  777. of human history.

  778. Can we fix it?

  779. Can we fix it?

  780. And people have come along

  781. and said,

  782. here's what we can do.

  783. In the 18th century,

  784. we said,

  785. if we can just create

  786. better societies

  787. fraternity,

  788. brotherhood and sisterhood,

  789. if we can give

  790. better measures

  791. of equality

  792. in every way

  793. across the board,

  794. if our educational

  795. work increases

  796. and we really educate people,

  797. then we can reach

  798. a society

  799. where we see

  800. these problems

  801. of self-centeredness

  802. and brokenness

  803. and corruption,

  804. they'll all go away.

  805. And so Karl Marx

  806. came along and said,

  807. you know,

  808. if we get rid of classes,

  809. if we have a classless society,

  810. then that will finally

  811. be the thing

  812. that will turn it around.

  813. And just before him,

  814. a guy named Rousseau,

  815. he said that,

  816. you know,

  817. the issue is adults,

  818. not children.

  819. And he said,

  820. so if we could just

  821. return everybody

  822. to a state of

  823. a wild infancy,

  824. you know,

  825. if we get rid of buildings

  826. and societies

  827. and we go back

  828. to the woods

  829. and we all live

  830. in the woods together

  831. and we live in a childlike,

  832. animalistic state,

  833. then that will fix the problem.

  834. Every single proposal

  835. that has been tried

  836. led to World War I

  837. and World War II.

  838. Every single proposal

  839. leads to where we are today.

  840. The world is still broken

  841. and bent and bruised

  842. and we still struggle

  843. with the same exact issues.

  844. And that means

  845. that what we need today,

  846. what we all need today,

  847. is an ability

  848. to answer this question,

  849. how can you be realistic

  850. about the state of the world

  851. and yet not become hopeless?

  852. Right,

  853. so people come at this

  854. in two ways.

  855. They start off young

  856. and they say,

  857. I'm romantic about the world.

  858. I don't really think

  859. it's that bad.

  860. I don't really think

  861. I'm that bad.

  862. I think I'm generally

  863. a good person.

  864. And then life comes along

  865. and the truth about the self,

  866. what we're capable of,

  867. comes out

  868. and the suffering comes in

  869. and a lot of times

  870. romanticism gives way

  871. to hopelessness.

  872. And the question

  873. that we really have

  874. before us today

  875. is,

  876. is there a way

  877. to look out at the world

  878. and ourselves

  879. and be realistic

  880. about the truth

  881. of what's wrong

  882. with this world

  883. and yet not hopeless,

  884. not cynical,

  885. not so broken by it

  886. that either we snark

  887. about everything

  888. or we end up

  889. in utter hopelessness.

  890. And the answer

  891. that Christianity gives

  892. is to say this,

  893. the world is broken.

  894. I am the problem.

  895. But because of the love of God,

  896. it will not be that way forever.

  897. And so,

  898. at the beginning

  899. of human history,

  900. there's an exchange

  901. between what should have been

  902. and what actually is.

  903. And in the middle

  904. of human history,

  905. there is a better exchange.

  906. There's a better exchange

  907. that came along.

  908. And, you know,

  909. we as creatures,

  910. we put ourselves

  911. in the place of the Creator.

  912. So what did God do?

  913. The Creator put Himself

  914. in the place of the creature.

  915. In the middle of history,

  916. Jesus Christ,

  917. the Son of God,

  918. who is the Maker of the world,

  919. became the image of God.

  920. We were made to be

  921. the image of God.

  922. We rejected that

  923. and so Jesus became

  924. the image of God.

  925. We tried to trade places

  926. with God,

  927. so what did God do?

  928. God traded places with us.

  929. We tried to take His divinity

  930. so He took on our humanity.

  931. We wanted Him to die.

  932. We wanted Him to die

  933. and so He came and died.

  934. We went to Him

  935. with pride and the knife

  936. and He came

  937. and He put the knife

  938. to His own throat

  939. in the middle of human history.

  940. And you see,

  941. the good news of Christianity

  942. is not rules, rules, rules, rules, rules

  943. because of your sin, sin, sin, sin, sin, sin

  944. as Dawkins thought.

  945. Instead, let me say it like this

  946. as we close.

  947. If you could just put yourself

  948. for a moment

  949. in the first century,

  950. the day Jesus was crucified,

  951. into the court setting

  952. that Pontius Pilate,

  953. Pontius Pilate,

  954. he gathered all the people

  955. in Jerusalem

  956. and he brought Jesus out

  957. and he brought Barabbas out

  958. and there were two prisoners

  959. and he said,

  960. I will give you Jesus back.

  961. You can choose here.

  962. You can have whichever one

  963. of these two people you want.

  964. And in that moment,

  965. what did the crowd do?

  966. The crowd snarked.

  967. The crowd mocked.

  968. The crowd jeered.

  969. And I was reading this week

  970. an editorial from a book review

  971. by David Denby

  972. who wrote a book called Snark.

  973. And Tim Keller pointed me

  974. to this in one of his books

  975. and this is what the review said.

  976. Snark, jeering and mocking,

  977. aims not just at refuting

  978. somebody's position

  979. but also at destroying

  980. their cool,

  981. erasing their effectiveness,

  982. trying to get control of

  983. and sully the person's image

  984. in the public.

  985. Opposing views are never treated

  986. with respect

  987. but instead with snarling disdain

  988. and ad hominem mockery.

  989. The internet has put snark

  990. on steroids.

  991. He says, David Denby says,

  992. snark is the attitude

  993. in the heart

  994. that seeks to erase someone,

  995. to destroy them,

  996. that seeks to erase

  997. and destroy a person.

  998. In the middle of human history,

  999. Peter says that every single one of us

1000. snarked, sneered, mocked, and jeered

1001. at Jesus Christ that day.

1002. That we were the ones

  1003. who yelled, crucify him.

1004. That we were the ones

  1005. that said,

1006. if he can save himself, let him.

  1007. If he says,

1008. if he really is God,

  1009. let him show it.

1010. The attitude of the beginning

1011. of all of human history

  1012. that broke the world

  1013. is the very attitude

1014. that put Christ on the cross

  1015. and it was me.

  1016. It was you.

1017. It was all of us.

1018. That's what the Bible says.

1019. And you've got to see

  1020. that in the beginning,

  1021. humanity,

  1022. we fell from grace.

1023. Jesus Christ walked down the steps.

1024. Jesus Christ came and chose.

  1025. You see,

  1026. we began with mockery,

  1027. with jeering,

  1028. with snark.

1029. He chose to be mocked.

1030. He chose to be jeered.

1031. He chose to be snarked at.

1032. In the middle of human history.

1033. He who knew no sin

  1034. became sin for us.

  1035. He took our blows.

  1036. He took our jeers.

  1037. He took our mockery.

  1038. He became the chastisement

1039. that would bring us shalom,

  1040. peace,

1041. the peace of the garden.

  1042. And so,

  1043. in the beginning,

1044. in the garden of Eden,

  1045. Adam and Eve

  1046. ruined the garden city

1047. that God made as our home.

  1048. Jesus Christ was murdered

  1049. by our hands

1050. and he was buried in a garden

1051. so that at the moment

  1052. of resurrection,

  1053. the garden could become

  1054. our home again.

1055. In the beginning of human history,

  1056. Adam and Eve

  1057. took of the tree

  1058. and cursed the world.

  1059. Jesus Christ,

1060. in the middle of human history,

1061. hung upon that cursed tree

1062. in order to heal the world.

  1063. You see,

1064. the gospel is the great reversal

  1065. of Genesis 3.

1066. Everything that we did wrong,

1067. Jesus came and took our place

  1068. to make right,

  1069. to heal the land.

1070. And I just want to ask you this morning,

  1071. if you will,

  1072. for a moment,

  1073. look at the truth

  1074. about yourself,

  1075. about your self-centeredness,

  1076. about your struggle

  1077. with the snark,

  1078. the jeer,

  1079. the attitude

  1080. that begins maybe

  1081. in your experience

  1082. with other people

1083. but extends all the way

  1084. directed at God himself.

  1085. And then you'll turn

1086. and you'll look at the cross.

  1087. You can realize this.

1088. My heart every day says,

  1089. my heart every day

  1090. says to my brain,

1091. God does not love you.

  1092. God does not have

1093. your best interests at heart.

  1094. God is not good.

1095. And then I have to lift my eyes

1096. and look at the cross

1097. and see that Jesus Christ,

  1098. God loves me

1099. to the point of death for me.

  1100. Every day,

1101. I've got to look at my heart,

  1102. the truth,

1103. and then I've got to look up

1104. and look at the cross

  1105. and say,

  1106. heart,

1107. look at the truth again.

  1108. God is good

  1109. and he loves you.

1110. And he's going to heal the land.

  1111. And so I'll finish

  1112. with a quote

  1113. from John Newton.

  1114. John Newton

  1115. was the captain

  1116. of a slave ship

  1117. that traded slaves

1118. off the coast of West Africa.

1119. And he found God's grace.

  1120. God's grace radically

  1121. came into his life

  1122. and showed him

1123. how big of a sinner he was

1124. and how broken he was.

1125. But it's not very well known

  1126. that John Newton

  1127. did not stop

1128. in the slave trade industry

1129. for a number of years.

1130. until after he came to faith.

1131. And he was a very broken man.

1132. And later on in life,

  1133. he wrote a hymn

  1134. that we now sing.

1135. We're not singing it this morning.

1136. I should have put it in.

  1137. But you'll recognize it.

  1138. He wrote later,

1139. thinking about his ongoing involvement

  1140. in such atrocity.

  1141. He said,

  1142. Our sins are many,

1143. but his mercy is more.

  1144. Our sins are great,

1145. but his righteousness is greater.

  1146. We are weak,

  1147. but he is power.

  1148. Let's pray.

  1149. Father,

  1150. we confess our sins.

  1151. There are many.

1152. Your mercy is so much greater

1153. than what we've given you.

  1154. And so,

  1155. we confess this morning

  1156. our snark

  1157. and our attitude

  1158. that broke the world.

1159. And we look for hope today

1160. and we thank you for forgiveness.

  1161. And so right now,

  1162. as we sing,

1163. we pray that the Holy Spirit

  1164. would turn our eyes

  1165. and our hearts

1166. to the power of the cross.

1167. And we pray this in Jesus' name.

  1168. Amen.
