  1. So, just to think for a few moments, what do we mean by Christian endurance?

  2. You know, endurance is one of those words, it's like perseverance, resilience.

  3. It's a quality that we value in ourselves.

  4. We want to grow in our ability to stay the course and stickability.

  5. It's something as parents we want to see develop in our kids.

  6. What do we mean?

  7. What comes to our mind when we think of endurance?

  8. You know, perhaps we think of the extremes, the Ironman, the ultra-marathon endurance races.

  9. Perhaps you think of someone like Ernest Shackleton.

  10. I've just begun reading the diary of the sailing of the endurance as Shackleton attempted to cross Antarctica,

  11. a well-named boat, because his story was one of endurance.

  12. Him and his crew endured as their boat was trapped in pack ice in the midst of the Weddell Sea,

  13. and then endured through a 16-day, 800-mile voyage on a small lifeboat to find help for the rest of the crew,

  14. left stranded, going through huge stormy seas and freezing conditions,

  15. to rescue men enduring freezing conditions, camping on a rock of ice for 128 days.

  16. So, we think of endurance, perhaps that's where we go.

  17. My question is, is that a helpful picture for Christian endurance?

  18. John writes to believers who need to endure.

  19. They are facing danger.

  20. It's interesting that either side of our text, so chapter 2, verse 26, he says,

  21. I'm writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.

  22. And then in chapter 3 and verse 7,

  23. Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray.

  24. So, this is a church experiencing the danger of drift.

  25. They have seen in their experience a division within their church,

  26. the departure of some of their leaders who it turns out were false teachers.

  27. And on top of that, they are experiencing within the Roman Empire this daily reality of being a marginalized minority,

  28. beginning to be more and more targeted, living on the margins of society,

  29. a weak church at this stage.

  30. And endurance for them, and probably endurance for us in our circumstance,

  31. endurance is not primarily going to be about the spectacular exploits of the Iron Men or of the adventurers like Shackleton.

  32. Endurance is about living the life of faith in the face of opposition and attack.

  33. It's enduring in a daily walk of Christian obedience,

  34. of practicing the truth,

  35. of committing to love their neighbors,

  36. of pursuing integrity.

  37. It was a hard calling then.

  38. It's often a hard calling now.

  39. And it's interesting that John, throughout his letter,

  40. gives us the key to Christian endurance.

  41. So, here in chapter 2 and verse 28,

  42. it begins,

  43. And we've said this before,

  44. it's the abiding word.

  45. The key to Christian endurance is abiding in Christ.

  46. Jesus himself famously used that image in John 15,

  47. I am the vine,

  48. you are the branches,

  49. we need to remain to abide in him,

  50. by the Spirit,

  51. if we are to find strength,

  52. vitality,

  53. and life from Jesus,

  54. if we are to bear fruit.

  55. That's the secret to Christian endurance.

  56. And that's what we're going to think about,

  57. as John gives us some instruction,

  58. and some wonderful truth in this section.

  59. It's so interesting to think about their experience,

  60. and why he's writing,

  61. is to understand that John believes,

  62. that when we struggle as Christians,

  63. when there are difficulties facing us,

  64. what we need is good doctrine.

  65. We need gospel hope in suffering.

  66. We need something that is secure and true,

  67. if we are to have hope,

  68. and if we are to persevere.

  69. And so he brings gospel truths,

  70. about God's great love for his people,

  71. and the promise of future glory,

  72. at the return of Christ.

  73. And all the way along,

  74. he is encouraging believers,

  75. remember God has worked,

  76. God is working,

  77. God will work for your salvation,

  78. therefore endure.

  79. Stay the course,

  80. follow the way of Christ.

  81. So let's get into our text.

  82. And the first thing I want us to think about is this,

  83. we are called by John to continue in Christ,

  84. confident about his return.

  85. Again, just to say one more thing about the context,

  86. chapter 2, verse 18,

  87. we looked at this a few weeks ago,

  88. John describes the time that they are living

  89. as being the last hour,

  90. and a time of many antichrists.

  91. So we are to picture a time of intense,

  92. spiritual opposition,

  93. spiritual opposition,

  94. a time of discouragement and confusion,

  95. perhaps, for the church,

  96. as there are those who deliberately set out

  97. to oppose Christ,

  98. to be anti,

  99. to be against Christ Jesus.

  100. And what does John say to believers

  101. in that kind of situation?

  102. What's our need?

  103. We need to focus on our certain future with Christ.

  104. And now, dear children,

  105. verse 28,

  106. continue in him

  107. so that when he appears,

  108. we may be confident

  109. and unashamed before him at his coming.

  110. So there's a certain knowledge.

  111. Christ will return.

  112. He will appear.

  113. His glory will be revealed.

  114. Everyone will see him

  115. as he returns as victorious, conquering king.

  116. The same idea is there in chapter 3, verse 2.

  117. We know that when Christ appears.

  118. So that's a certain hope for the future.

  119. And there's another certainty

  120. in verse 28.

  121. We will stand before Jesus Christ

  122. at his coming.

  123. And one thing that John anticipates,

  124. and Jesus does the same,

  125. is that standing before Jesus at his coming

  126. will either be a moment of joy

  127. or a moment of profound shame.

  128. There will be those who are true believers

  129. who will welcome Christ the King

  130. at his appearing.

  131. And there will be those

  132. who will cry out to the rocks,

  133. fall on us.

  134. How can we be confident on that day

  135. to welcome Christ as our King?

  136. John says it's as we continue in Christ,

  137. as we abide in him,

  138. with our faith in him,

  139. drawing power from him,

  140. receiving grace and the Spirit.

  141. That's the key to security in the present

  142. and hope for the future.

  143. Persevering in Christ,

  144. enduring in faith,

  145. is the basis for us to have real confidence

  146. as we think about the return of Christ.

  147. But here's the really crucial thing

  148. for us to understand,

  149. and it's there throughout the Bible.

  150. This is a work of God's grace

  151. in his people.

  152. Our confidence rests always in God

  153. and in Christ

  154. and not in ourselves.

  155. So that's why we heard from John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  156. Here is Jesus,

  157. and he describes himself as a good shepherd.

  158. And as a good shepherd,

  159. he calls his sheep to him,

  160. and he speaks with such authority and power

  161. that his sheep follow him.

  162. He gives the gift of eternal life,

  163. and his authority and power and love

  164. are so strong

  165. that no one can take a believer

  166. out of Jesus' hands,

  167. no one can take a believer

  168. out of the Father's hands.

  169. There is security,

  170. not because of our faith,

  171. but who our faith is in.

  172. Philippians chapter 1, verse 6.

    Philippians 1:6

  173. Here is something we can be confident in,

  174. being confident in this,

  175. that he who began a good work in you

  176. will carry it on to completion.

  177. When it comes to salvation,

  178. God always finishes what he starts.

  179. And so believers can be confident.

  180. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  181. Paul again,

  182. nothing can separate us

  183. from the love of God

  184. that is in Christ Jesus.

  185. Because it's God's unbreakable commitment

  186. to save his people for his glory

  187. that enables us to persevere and endure.

  188. And we're presented with this wonderful outcome

  189. for the true believer.

  190. When Christ appears,

  191. rather than hiding in fear,

  192. there is this confidence.

  193. And that word,

  194. the confidence word there,

  195. has the idea of

  196. there's a joyful access

  197. to our God and our Savior.

  198. There's an ability to speak freely

  199. because we have a real living relationship

  200. based on love.

  201. The difference, in a sense,

  202. is the difference between

  203. the first two people

  204. that we meet in the Bible,

  205. Adam and Eve,

  206. before and after they fell into sin.

  207. So if we begin at Genesis 3,

  208. if we begin after they disobey God,

  209. they take the forbidden fruit,

  210. they say no to God's word

  211. and God's authority.

  212. Sin interrupts their fellowship with God.

  213. They have this reality of shame and guilt.

  214. So when God comes to speak with them,

  215. they hide.

  216. They cower in the shadows.

  217. But we know that that wasn't true before sin.

  218. Beforehand,

  219. created perfectly in the image of God

  220. to know and enjoy Him,

  221. God met with them.

  222. God spoke with them openly.

  223. And they enjoyed life

  224. with their creator,

  225. their king,

  226. and their friend.

  227. And here is what John is saying.

  228. When Jesus returns,

  229. that relationship

  230. that Adam and Eve enjoyed

  231. that was lost

  232. because of sin and the fall,

  233. that will be fully restored.

  234. Never to be broken again.

  235. And so John teaches us,

  236. just as for a believer,

  237. we have bold confidence

  238. to come to the throne of grace today.

  239. whenever we pray,

  240. we're invited to come with confidence

  241. to our Father

  242. to find grace and mercy

  243. and help in our time of need.

  244. We will have the same bold confidence

  245. when Jesus comes back.

  246. But we'll have that reality

  247. in a whole new way

  248. because then we'll see Him face to face

  249. and we'll think about that.

  250. And then in verse 29,

  251. He reminds us

  252. that future hope

  253. makes a difference

  254. for how we live today.

  255. If you know that He is righteous,

  256. this one who is appearing,

  257. you know that everyone

  258. who does what is right

  259. has been born of Him.

  260. And so the logic

  261. that John gives us

  262. is that likeness

  263. is a proof of relationship.

  264. He says that's true

  265. in a biological family

  266. and it's also true

  267. in God's family,

  268. that those who have been

  269. born through the work of Christ,

  270. by the work of the Spirit,

  271. by the Father's love,

  272. will look like

  273. and pursue

  274. a life of righteousness.

  275. Jesus is the one

  276. who is truly

  277. and perfectly righteous,

  278. but the life of a believer

  279. will be characterized

  280. by doing what is right

  281. according to God's will.

  282. Now we will not do that perfectly,

  283. but that's our direction of travel.

  284. That the family of Christ

  285. will persevere

  286. in pursuing righteousness.

  287. righteousness.

  288. So John writes

  289. to the believers then

  290. and by extension to us

  291. and he says we need

  292. a focus

  293. that is on our future,

  294. that is Christ-centered

  295. as we live today,

  296. knowing what will be true

  297. of us then,

  298. drawing on the grace

  299. that He supplies

  300. by the Spirit,

  301. enabled to endure

  302. because we have this hope

  303. that when Jesus returns

  304. there's a glorious

  305. eternal homecoming

  306. for us

  307. as those who belong to Him.

  308. So we are to continue

  309. in Christ

  310. confident

  311. about His return,

  312. but we're secondly

  313. to continue in Christ

  314. confident

  315. in the Father's love.

  316. That's the beginning

  317. of chapter 3.

  318. And just before we get

  319. to our text,

  320. just to think about

  321. a phrase that we use a lot,

  322. you know,

  323. we perhaps talk about

  324. things being out

  325. of this world.

  326. Lots of people talking about,

  327. you saw Hallin's goal

  328. midweek,

  329. out of this world.

  330. We sometimes use it

  331. of really simple things

  332. like a meal

  333. or an experience.

  334. But John wants

  335. to capture that language

  336. and wants believers

  337. to appreciate something

  338. that truly and genuinely

  339. is out of this world.

  340. And it's this,

  341. it's God the Father's

  342. love for His children.

  343. Verse 1,

  344. See what great love

  345. the Father has lavished on us

  346. that we should be called

  347. children of God.

  348. That word see,

  349. if you're familiar

  350. with the authorized version,

  351. behold.

  352. It's the idea

  353. of contemplating.

  354. Here is what we need

  355. to meditate on,

  356. to focus our attention on,

  357. and it's the Father's love

  358. for His children.

  359. When it says,

  360. See what great love

  361. the Father has lavished,

  362. what kind of love,

  363. what manner of love,

  364. literally,

  365. John is saying,

  366. this is love

  367. from another country.

  368. This is a love

  369. that is foreign.

  370. In other words,

  371. it's utterly unique.

  372. The love that God

  373. the Father has for us

  374. is the out of this world

  375. love that He wants us

  376. to appreciate,

  377. and we find it

  378. in the gospel.

  379. And in the context

  380. of what John is writing,

  381. he says,

  382. if we are to keep enduring,

  383. to use Eugene Peterson's language,

  384. to pursue that long obedience

  385. in the same direction,

  386. here is something

  387. we need to know

  388. and to think about.

  389. It's how deep

  390. the Father's love for us is.

  391. We need to let that sink

  392. deep into our heart,

  393. our mind,

  394. and our soul.

  395. He says,

  396. this love

  397. gives the believers

  398. a new name.

  399. See what great love

  400. the Father has lavished on us

  401. that we should be called

  402. children of God.

  403. By God's gracious initiative,

  404. our identity

  405. is transformed.

  406. No longer what we are

  407. by nature

  408. because of sin,

  409. enemies of God,

  410. rebels against His will,

  411. strangers to His grace,

  412. now because of God's work

  413. for us in Jesus,

  414. children of God.

  415. And he says,

  416. this out of this world

  417. love from the Father

  418. gives us a new status.

  419. Verse 1,

  420. that's what we are.

  421. We are children of God.

  422. Verse 2,

  423. dear friends,

  424. now we are children of God.

  425. Something has happened.

  426. There's been a legal action

  427. that's taken place.

  428. Then there's been

  429. a change of status

  430. freely granted to us.

  431. Now we are children.

  432. Now we are heirs

  433. of God,

  434. our Father.

  435. It's a transformation

  436. that is so great

  437. that John says

  438. it's like the world

  439. doesn't recognize us,

  440. just as it didn't

  441. recognize Jesus.

  442. Now we are this

  443. new community

  444. with a new citizenship

  445. being made more and more

  446. like the Lord Jesus Christ.

  447. Adopted into the family of God.

  448. How do we receive this love?

  449. How do we receive

  450. and enjoy this new identity?

  451. It's through God's work

  452. for us in the gospel.

  453. And it's the truth

  454. of the gospel

  455. that we need to behold,

  456. to understand

  457. that it's in the gospel

  458. that we see

  459. on full display

  460. the Father's love for us.

  461. Because it's in the gospel

  462. we discover,

  463. how is it that sinners like us

  464. can be reconciled

  465. to a holy God?

  466. How can people like us

  467. be in the family of God

  468. despite the reality

  469. of our sin

  470. and our guilt?

  471. And so in the gospel

  472. we learn about

  473. this idea of justification.

  474. We encounter a God

  475. who is both loving

  476. and just.

  477. A God who cannot

  478. simply turn a blind eye

  479. to sin.

  480. He cannot ignore

  481. our faults.

  482. He cannot sweep

  483. our guilt

  484. under the rug

  485. but because He is holy

  486. He must punish.

  487. His justice

  488. must be satisfied.

  489. So God is just

  490. but He's also loving.

  491. And we see His love

  492. in the gospel

  493. as the Father

  494. sends His Son.

  495. The righteous one.

  496. The pure one.

  497. And the punishment

  498. that we deserve

  499. is poured out on Him.

  500. He becomes

  501. the means

  502. of atonement.

  503. Dealing with

  504. covering our sin

  505. because of

  506. His sacrifice.

  507. And by faith

  508. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  509. our sin is forgiven

  510. and guilt is removed.

  511. This great exchange

  512. happens where

  513. Jesus is counted

  514. as if He were the sinner

  515. and we are counted

  516. as if we were the righteous.

  517. And now

  518. because of this

  519. great work of God

  520. as we are credited

  521. with Christ's

  522. perfect righteousness

  523. we can be adopted

  524. by God's grace

  525. to become

  526. His children.

  527. The goal

  528. of being justified

  529. being declared

  530. right in God's sight

  531. is that

  532. we would be

  533. adopted

  534. into

  535. His family

  536. to know

  537. the love

  538. of

  539. the Father.

  540. And notice

  541. that just as John

  542. began this section

  543. thinking about

  544. the return of Christ

  545. John connects

  546. these two truths

  547. in our next couple

  548. of verses

  549. the truths

  550. of the Father's love

  551. and the return

  552. of Christ.

  553. And again

  554. it's for the basis

  555. of our hope

  556. and endurance

  557. to remind us

  558. of God's love

  559. and God's grace

  560. and what He's laid up

  561. for us.

  562. So chapter 3

  563. and verse 2

  564. dear friends

  565. now we are

  566. children of God

  567. and what we will be

  568. has not yet

  569. been made known.

  570. So here's a wonderful

  571. reality.

  572. As much

  573. as the greatest

  574. minds

  575. in all of church

  576. history are able

  577. to fathom

  578. something of the

  579. depths of theology

  580. nobody will ever

  581. be able to

  582. comprehend

  583. what God

  584. has in store

  585. for those who

  586. love Him.

  587. We can get

  588. a true sense

  589. but we will never

  590. get a complete sense

  591. of how wonderful

  592. our eternity

  593. will be.

  594. God is so

  595. kind

  596. to give us

  597. tastes

  598. and glimpses

  599. in the gospel

  600. but they are

  601. just a reminder

  602. and anticipation

  603. of a feast

  604. to come

  605. that it's so

  606. good

  607. that we cannot

  608. get our heads

  609. around it.

  610. And yet having

  611. said that

  612. John does bring

  613. three wonderful

  614. truths to

  615. our attention.

  616. First

  617. here's the first

  618. thing we know

  619. verse 2

  620. we know

  621. that Christ

  622. will appear.

  623. So we've said

  624. that already

  625. we know

  626. there is a day

  627. coming

  628. when God's

  629. glory in Jesus

  630. will be on full

  631. display.

  632. The first time

  633. Jesus came

  634. in humility

  635. born

  636. in a stable

  637. placed in a manger

  638. the second time

  639. He comes

  640. the sky will be

  641. split open

  642. and everyone

  643. will see Him

  644. as He comes

  645. as conquering

  646. King of glory.

  647. Connected to that

  648. here's the second

  649. thing we know

  650. we shall be

  651. like Him.

  652. Which at very

  653. least

  654. means that

  655. when Jesus

  656. comes

  657. glorified

  658. resurrected

  659. Savior

  660. we too

  661. will be

  662. glorified

  663. we too

  664. will have

  665. resurrection

  666. life

  667. resurrected

  668. bodies

  669. 1 Corinthians

  670. 15

  671. It means

  672. at very least

  673. Revelation 21

  674. that we will

  675. live for

  676. eternity

  677. free from

  678. sin

  679. and suffering

  680. and death

  681. and it means

  682. 2 Corinthians 3

  683. that we will be

  684. then transformed

  685. into His

  686. glorious image

  687. by the Spirit

  688. that process

  689. that the Spirit

  690. is involved

  691. in now

  692. making us

  693. more and more

  694. like Jesus

  695. will be completed

  696. when He returns

  697. and the third

  698. thing that we know

  699. is that we

  700. shall see

  701. Him

  702. as He

  703. is

  704. so now

  705. it's true

  706. for us

  707. as believers

  708. we walk

  709. by faith

  710. and not

  711. by sight

  712. we have

  713. the wonderful

  714. gift of

  715. faith

  716. and the

  717. gift of

  718. faith

  719. enables us

  720. to have

  721. these

  722. glimpses

  723. of Christ's

  724. glory

  725. and we

  726. experience

  727. the joy

  728. of His

  729. presence

  730. but we

  731. know all

  732. too often

  733. as believers

  734. that those

  735. moments

  736. are real

  737. but they

  738. often feel

  739. faint

  740. and they're

  741. hard to

  742. keep hold

  743. off

  744. you know

  745. it's wonderful

  746. isn't it

  747. when we have

  748. those moments

  749. perhaps in a

  750. church service

  751. or when we're

  752. reading our

  753. Bibles

  754. or when we're

  755. praying

  756. and we know

  757. that God

  758. is close

  759. and we

  760. experience

  761. His love

  762. in a particular

  763. way

  764. but that's

  765. really hard

  766. as much

  767. as we love

  768. to try

  769. and keep

  770. hold of

  771. that

  772. so often

  773. it comes

  774. and it

  775. goes

  776. it's one

  777. of the

  778. reasons

  779. why we

  780. need

  781. worship

  782. it's why

  783. as Ian

  784. said

  785. we need

  786. to be

  787. reading

  788. God's

  789. word

  790. we need

  791. to be

  792. hearing

  793. the gospel

  794. we need

  795. to be

  796. sharing

  797. the Lord's

  798. Supper

  799. these are

  800. all chances

  801. opportunities

  802. for us

  803. to see

  804. Christ

  805. by faith

  806. but at

  807. His return

  808. then we

  809. see by

  810. sight

  811. then we

  812. see perfectly

  813. then there's

  814. no coming

  815. and going

  816. but we have

  817. that perfect

  818. fellowship

  819. perfect love

  820. and this is

  821. the goal

  822. of our

  823. faith

  824. it's the

  825. center

  826. of our

  827. hope

  828. to see

  829. Jesus

  830. as we

  831. are made

  832. like Him

  833. like those

  834. men who

  835. came

  836. to the

  837. disciples

  838. shortly

  839. before

  840. Jesus

  841. would go

  842. to the

  843. cross

  844. we want

  845. to see

  846. Jesus

  847. the longing

  848. of our

  849. heart

  850. we want

  851. to see

  852. Jesus

  853. when Jesus

  854. returns

  855. that longing

  856. is answered

  857. Psalm 27

    Psalms 27:4

  858. verse 4

  859. the longing

  860. of David

  861. one thing

  862. I desire

  863. to gaze

  864. on the

  865. beauty

  866. of the

  867. Lord

  868. the promise

  869. of Jesus

  870. in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  871. chapter 5

  872. blessed are

  873. the pure

  874. in heart

  875. for they

  876. will

  877. see God

  878. Revelation

    Revelation 1:7

  879. 1 verse 7

  880. look he is

  881. coming with

  882. the clouds

  883. and every

  884. eye

  885. will see

  886. him

  887. and so

  888. John takes

  889. discouraged

  890. and weak

  891. Christians

  892. who have

  893. seen some

  894. of their

  895. church depart

  896. and are

  897. tempting them

  898. to believe

  899. lies and

  900. untruths

  901. he takes

  902. them to

  903. the glory

  904. of the

  905. father's

  906. love

  907. and he

  908. reminds them

  909. listen the

  910. father who

  911. loved you

  912. enough in

  913. Christ to

  914. make you

  915. his children

  916. is the

  917. father who

  918. will love

  919. you and

  920. bring you

  921. home to

  922. heaven and

  923. to the

  924. new creation

  925. saying to

  926. them and to

  927. us if we

  928. are to

  929. persevere

  930. we must

  931. hold our

  932. gaze

  933. to hold

  934. our ground

  935. to fix

  936. our eyes

  937. on God's

  938. love for

  939. us in

  940. Christ

  941. to

  942. contemplate

  943. to consider

  944. the

  945. electing

  946. unshakable

  947. eternal

  948. love God

  949. the father

  950. has for

  951. his

  952. children

  953. and then

  954. there's

  955. verse 3

  956. of chapter

  957. 3

  958. all who

  959. have this

  960. hope in

  961. him

  962. purify

  963. themselves

  964. just as

  965. he is

  966. pure

  967. and there's

  968. this interesting

  969. and we've

  970. thought about

  971. some of the

  972. moral tests

  973. that we find

  974. in John's

  975. first letter

  976. and here's

  977. another

  978. he says

  979. if our

  980. future hope

  981. is truly

  982. fixed on

  983. Christ and

  984. seeing him

  985. and being

  986. like him

  987. that has

  988. implications

  989. for how

  990. we live

  991. today

  992. it means

  993. we will

  994. want to

  995. be as

  996. like him

  997. as we

  998. can be

  999. today

  1000. Christ

  1001. is

  1002. pure

  1003. so we

  1004. want to

  1005. participate

  1006. with the

  1007. spirit

  1008. in a

  1009. purifying

  1010. process

  1011. if heaven

  1012. is our

  1013. true

  1014. home

  1015. if that's

  1016. where our

  1017. true identity

  1018. our citizenship

  1019. is

  1020. then holiness

  1021. is the

  1022. road we are

  1023. going to be

  1024. walking on

  1025. until we

  1026. get there

  1027. some of us

  1028. are familiar

  1029. with the

  1030. idea of

  1031. culture shock

  1032. you move

  1033. to a

  1034. different

  1035. place

  1036. a different

  1037. country

  1038. and everything

  1039. seems so

  1040. different

  1041. as believers

  1042. we want

  1043. to avoid

  1044. culture shock

  1045. in heaven

  1046. because we

  1047. want to be

  1048. living today

  1049. and tomorrow

  1050. the values

  1051. of heaven

  1052. here on

  1053. earth

  1054. as we

  1055. know he

  1056. is pure

  1057. and perfect

  1058. by the

  1059. help of

  1060. the spirit

  1061. and the

  1062. grace that

  1063. Jesus supplies

  1064. that is this

  1065. ongoing

  1066. purifying

  1067. in our

  1068. lives

  1069. making us

  1070. more and

  1071. more like

  1072. Jesus

  1073. and so it's

  1074. interesting for

  1075. John that these

  1076. glorious truths of

  1077. the Father's

  1078. love and

  1079. future hope

  1080. have a very

  1081. practical

  1082. outworking

  1083. they lead us

  1084. to persevere

  1085. in seeking

  1086. after moral

  1087. purity

  1088. in conclusion

  1089. thinking about

  1090. this little

  1091. section

  1092. John is

  1093. saying to

  1094. us

  1095. Christians

  1096. true believers

  1097. will endure

  1098. because of

  1099. God

  1100. and the

  1101. gospel

  1102. because of

  1103. truths about

  1104. God and

  1105. his work

  1106. in salvation

  1107. how are we

  1108. to stay

  1109. the course

  1110. it's through

  1111. God's work

  1112. to return to

  1113. Shackleton's

  1114. voyage for a

  1115. moment

  1116. Captain

  1117. Worsley

  1118. wrote a

  1119. really nice

  1120. diary

  1121. an account

  1122. of the

  1123. voyage

  1124. and early

  1125. on when it

  1126. became apparent

  1127. that this

  1128. ship the

  1129. Endurance was

  1130. going to have

  1131. to be left

  1132. behind that it

  1133. was going to

  1134. sink

  1135. he wrote

  1136. this

  1137. he said

  1138. Shackleton

  1139. had a

  1140. genius

  1141. it was

  1142. neither

  1143. more

  1144. nor

  1145. less

  1146. than

  1147. that

  1148. for

  1149. keeping

  1150. those

  1151. about

  1152. him

  1153. in

  1154. high

  1155. spirits

  1156. we

  1157. loved

  1158. him

  1159. every

  1160. man

  1161. among

  1162. us

  1163. had

  1164. unbounded

  1165. faith

  1166. in

  1167. Shackleton

  1168. we knew

  1169. that if

  1170. mortal man

  1171. could lead

  1172. us to

  1173. safety

  1174. Shackleton

  1175. was that

  1176. man

  1177. it was a

  1178. great tribute

  1179. to that

  1180. adventurer

  1181. as a

  1182. leader

  1183. but you

  1184. know my

  1185. gut reaction

  1186. was

  1187. wow

  1188. I am

  1189. no

  1190. Shackleton

  1191. and then

  1192. I started

  1193. thinking wow

  1194. if that's

  1195. the kind

  1196. of leader

  1197. that a

  1198. church

  1199. needs

  1200. if a

  1201. church

  1202. is going

  1203. to survive

  1204. then we're

  1205. in trouble

  1206. because that's

  1207. not me

  1208. and that's

  1209. why we need

  1210. to hear

  1211. the gospel

  1212. because our

  1213. endurance

  1214. is not

  1215. on me

  1216. and it's

  1217. not on

  1218. you

  1219. and it's

  1220. not our

  1221. ability

  1222. to endure

  1223. who's the

  1224. leader that

  1225. we place

  1226. our faith

  1227. in

  1228. one who

  1229. is infinitely

  1230. greater than

  1231. Shackleton

  1232. who's the

  1233. genius that

  1234. gives us

  1235. our unbounded

  1236. unshakable

  1237. confidence

  1238. it's the

  1239. Lord Jesus

  1240. Shackleton

  1241. failed

  1242. he never

  1243. made it

  1244. across

  1245. Antarctica

  1246. but the

  1247. Lord Jesus

  1248. he never

  1249. ever

  1250. fails

  1251. and he

  1252. is how

  1253. we will

  1254. stay the

  1255. course

  1256. in the

  1257. Christian

  1258. life

  1259. to come

  1260. back to

  1261. reality

  1262. come back

  1263. to Monday

  1264. morning

  1265. how will

  1266. I pursue

  1267. a life

  1268. of faithfulness

  1269. how will

  1270. I love

  1271. my neighbor

  1272. how will

  1273. I speak

  1274. and act

  1275. with truth

  1276. and integrity

  1277. in my

  1278. workplace

  1279. how will

  1280. I serve

  1281. family

  1282. friends

  1283. colleagues

  1284. coursemates

  1285. mercifully

  1286. we don't

  1287. need the

  1288. heroic

  1289. character

  1290. of a

  1291. Shackleton

  1292. because our

  1293. perseverance

  1294. and endurance

  1295. begins

  1296. and ends

  1297. with God

  1298. he calls

  1299. he keeps

  1300. he gives

  1301. eternal life

  1302. those who

  1303. abide in

  1304. Christ

  1305. those who

  1306. continue

  1307. in him

  1308. we draw

  1309. from his

  1310. supplies of

  1311. grace

  1312. we find

  1313. strength from

  1314. him in our

  1315. weakness

  1316. we can

  1317. bear fruit

  1318. as he

  1319. supplies

  1320. the spirit

  1321. we can

  1322. continue

  1323. in Christ

  1324. with

  1325. confident

  1326. hope

  1327. that

  1328. Christ's

  1329. first coming

  1330. his work

  1331. on the cross

  1332. demonstrates

  1333. the

  1334. father's

  1335. love for

  1336. us

  1337. and

  1338. Christ's

  1339. return

  1340. will bring

  1341. us into

  1342. an eternal

  1343. experience

  1344. of that

  1345. perfect

  1346. love

  1347. and so

  1348. we're

  1349. called to

  1350. take

  1351. heart

  1352. when our

  1353. hope is

  1354. in Christ

  1355. knowing that

  1356. God will

  1357. finish what

  1358. he starts

  1359. that God

  1360. perfectly loves

  1361. and never

  1362. lets go

  1363. of his

  1364. children

  1365. and God's

  1366. commitment

  1367. makes sure

  1368. that his

  1369. children will

  1370. keep going

  1371. until our

  1372. faith does

  1373. become

  1374. a perfect

  1375. site

  1376. and

  1377. to

  1378. go

  1379. to
