  1. Matthew 5, verses 33 to 37.

    Matthew 5:33–37

  2. And Jesus says this,

  3. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old,

  4. You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.

  5. But I say to you, do not take an oath at all,

  6. either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

  7. or by earth, for it is His footstool,

  8. or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

  9. And do not take an oath by your head,

  10. for you cannot make one hair white or black.

  11. Let what you say be simply yes or no.

  12. Anything more than this comes from evil.

  13. This is God's holy word.

  14. Tonight, we are carrying on with Jesus as He preaches His sermon on the Mount.

  15. The last few weeks, we've been saying that Jesus is preaching,

  16. He's speaking in a day when people are trying to minimize the reality of human failure.

  17. And we're on these six commands that Jesus picks up on.

  18. We're on the fourth tonight.

  19. And we've said before, our idea maybe, just maybe,

  20. is that these are just sets of rules.

  21. Rules and more rules.

  22. Or on the other side of that,

  23. maybe perhaps we obsess over them,

  24. and we'll say, you know, I'll be more Christian.

  25. I will be more spiritual if I just keep these commands down to the letter.

  26. Jesus comes to these two extremes, we've said the last few weeks,

  27. evasion and obsession.

  28. And He says it's neither.

  29. This is just, for you, Christian, He says,

  30. this is just about living the life that you have been given.

  31. In a world full of disorder,

  32. in a world full of, you know, what we said the last few weeks,

  33. anger and lust and wrong desires,

  34. broken relationships,

  35. tonight a lack of trust.

  36. In that world, God's ongoing work is to undo that.

  37. And He will undo it at the new creation.

  38. And you, if you are a Christian,

  39. have been called to take part in that work.

  40. We are called to support life,

  41. to illustrate true, beautiful life,

  42. as it's meant to be.

  43. And tonight we're thinking especially about integrity

  44. and keeping your word and being honest.

  45. And with that, again, perhaps we stray towards evasion

  46. rather than staying in the middle where Jesus wants us to be.

  47. With the last three commands,

  48. with the last three sections on anger and wrong desires

  49. and having a correct view of marriage and relationships,

  50. relationships, and tonight, meaning what we say all of the time.

  51. The question is surely, surely we can relax a wee bit.

  52. That's the story in the Screwtape Letters,

  53. this book that Cody was mentioning earlier.

  54. Satan comes and he says,

  55. a little bit of bad is okay.

  56. You don't need to do as Jesus says all the time.

  57. It's attractive.

  58. It's appealing.

  59. Just a wee bit of bad is okay and you'll get by.

  60. If you're a Christian,

  61. you have been called to live this restored life.

  62. And the only reason you have this life

  63. is because Jesus kept his word.

  64. I know some people here are Gavin Orland fans.

  65. He's an American pastor and theologian

  66. and he's got a great podcast.

  67. And on his podcast he says,

  68. you know, as Christians,

  69. we are allowed to have happy thoughts.

  70. We have been given happy thoughts.

  71. And one happy thought is this,

  72. that Christ, before time,

  73. before creation,

  74. the Son of God,

  75. he knew your name.

  76. He thought of you specifically

  77. and he said he would go and die for you.

  78. The plan of the triune God from before time

  79. was to save sinful, broken people

  80. and give them real, true life.

  81. If you're a Christian,

  82. you're called to that.

  83. And the reason you're called to that

  84. is because Christ kept his word.

  85. He fulfilled what he said he would

  86. and he saved you.

  87. So, how do you support life?

  88. How do you,

  89. how do we fulfill our purpose in the world?

  90. We do it by imitating Jesus.

  91. We do it by keeping our word

  92. and being people of integrity.

  93. So, just two points tonight on that.

  94. Two points from these verses that we read.

  95. Firstly, we are,

  96. every single person,

  97. we are all in the presence of God

  98. all the time.

  99. And the second point,

  100. how to mean what you say.

  101. In light of being in the presence of God,

  102. how to mean what you say.

  103. So, firstly,

  104. we all,

  105. every single person,

  106. all of us tonight

  107. are in the presence of God

  108. every single time we speak.

  109. Jesus in this section is,

  110. he's picking up on a serious issue in his day

  111. and we read it there.

  112. It seems like quite a foreign issue to us,

  113. I think,

  114. perhaps more so than the last three commands.

  115. We don't usually swear oaths

  116. or make vows

  117. apart from in court

  118. or at our wedding.

  119. It's a pretty foreign idea.

  120. Jesus is speaking in a day

  121. when it's a big deal

  122. and it's a big problem,

  123. he says.

  124. So, in verse 33,

  125. he follows the same pattern

  126. that we've seen the last few weeks.

  127. You have heard it said,

  128. he says,

  129. you shall not swear falsely

  130. but shall perform to the Lord

  131. what you have sworn.

  132. But I say to you,

  133. do not take an oath at all.

  134. Jesus is again,

  135. for the fourth time in a row,

  136. correcting this idea

  137. that we can minimize

  138. the reality of our human failure.

  139. He tells him,

  140. you know,

  141. you think you can

  142. but you can't.

  143. You've been trying to make it

  144. really difficult

  145. to mess up.

  146. You say you're going to take oaths,

  147. well, I'm telling you,

  148. don't take any at all.

  149. Why?

  150. What's the problem

  151. with taking oaths?

  152. What's the point Jesus is making?

  153. The practice of taking oaths properly,

  154. according to the Pharisees,

  155. is not built around any one command,

  156. but it's a pulling together

  157. of loads of different commands

  158. in the Old Testament,

  159. and you don't need to turn to them,

  160. but I'll read just two or three.

  161. Leviticus 19,

  162. you shall not swear by my name falsely

  163. and so profane the name of your God.

  164. Numbers 30, verse 2,

    Numbers 30:2

  165. If a man vows a vow to the Lord

  166. or swears an oath to bind himself

  167. by a pledge,

  168. he shall not break his word.

  169. Ecclesiastes 5,

  170. When you vow a vow to God,

  171. do not delay paying it.

  172. There are so many more,

  173. but the one common feature

  174. that you'll have heard

  175. in each of these commands

  176. is swearing an oath

  177. in the name of the Lord.

  178. You make a vow to God,

  179. and Jesus is summarizing,

  180. in this verse,

  181. Jesus is summarizing

  182. their interpretation.

  183. Of the commands,

  184. when he says,

  185. You shall perform to the Lord

  186. what you have sworn.

  187. They're meant to be a sign

  188. that your word is binding.

  189. Vows were a sign

  190. that in your heart

  191. you really, really meant

  192. what you said.

  193. Swearing was a sign

  194. that you were going to,

  195. without question,

  196. tell the truth

  197. and stick to it.

  198. And what did the Pharisees do?

  199. They took all of these commands

  200. and they said,

  201. Well, only if you swear

  202. in the name of the Lord

  203. is your word binding.

  204. Only if you use his name

  205. when you say something

  206. are you going to have

  207. to follow through on that.

  208. Documents and tracks,

  209. loads and loads

  210. have been found

  211. outside of the Bible

  212. from the time

  213. that Jesus was speaking in.

  214. And there are these reports

  215. that oath-taking

  216. was a part,

  217. it was a big part

  218. of day-to-day life.

  219. So you could take an oath

  220. publicly in front of many people,

  221. you could take an oath

  222. or make a vow privately

  223. with just one person.

  224. Swearing was the same

  225. and books and tracks,

  226. pages and pages

  227. were written

  228. by these religious rulers

  229. to offer people loopholes

  230. when they made these vows.

  231. Formulas,

  232. sets of rules

  233. were created

  234. by taking Leviticus 19

  235. and Numbers 30

  236. and saying that,

  237. you know,

  238. there are things

  239. that you can say

  240. that will mean

  241. you don't really

  242. have to keep your word.

  243. You don't really

  244. have to follow through on this.

  245. If you follow this chart

  246. and you read the verses there,

  247. if you swear by heaven

  248. or by Jerusalem

  249. or by the hairs on your head,

  250. then you're fine.

  251. You don't have to keep your word.

  252. Just as long

  253. as you're not swearing

  254. in the name of the Lord,

  255. you don't have to

  256. keep your word.

  257. We see the problem.

  258. I think God is identifying

  259. a problem of the heart

  260. in the Old Testament

  261. when he gives these commands.

  262. He says, you know,

  263. people are deceitful.

  264. But what do the Pharisees say?

  265. What do they say?

  266. We can work around it.

  267. If we are deceitful

  268. and that's an issue,

  269. we can work around it.

  270. Oaths are meant

  271. to promote truthfulness.

  272. Let's use them

  273. to give us an opportunity

  274. not to be truthful.

  275. And so,

  276. Jesus says,

  277. if you swear

  278. in the name of the Lord

  279. and that's the only time

  280. you're going to tell the truth,

  281. don't swear an oath at all.

  282. Don't make a vow at all.

  283. That's Jesus' point.

  284. Don't take them at all.

  285. Why?

  286. Why not take oaths?

  287. You are always,

  288. Jesus is saying,

  289. in the presence of God,

  290. whether you say it or not.

  291. Heaven is his throne.

  292. The earth is his footstool.

  293. Jerusalem is the city of the king.

  294. Even your head is not your own.

  295. It's God who changes

  296. one black and one gray.

  297. He does that.

  298. From the most public speech

  299. to a relaxed conversation,

  300. to the most careful language,

  301. to the most careless,

  302. flippant language

  303. that someone really believes.

  304. He hears it all.

  305. You are always,

  306. Jesus is saying to them,

  307. in the presence of God

  308. when you speak.

  309. And every word you speak

  310. is before him.

  311. By his name

  312. or by the hairs on your head,

  313. you are speaking

  314. before God.

  315. And again,

  316. we don't take oaths.

  317. We don't make vows daily.

  318. And we read these words

  319. that Jesus is saying

  320. and we think

  321. that's a detached problem.

  322. That's a foreign problem to us.

  323. In verses 34 to 36,

  324. Jesus is saying,

  325. no,

  326. this is a problem

  327. for everyone.

  328. This is a problem

  329. for the heart,

  330. for every person.

  331. You might not swear

  332. by heaven

  333. or by your head,

  334. but God hears

  335. every word you say.

  336. Do we speak well?

  337. Do we mean everything we say?

  338. We are always

  339. in the presence of God.

  340. Every word is before him.

  341. We can put it another way.

  342. This week,

  343. the next seven days,

  344. when you think about

  345. the people

  346. that you're going to meet with

  347. and the things

  348. that you'll probably say to them,

  349. you will not be able

  350. to measure

  351. the truthfulness

  352. of your words.

  353. There are no levels

  354. to truthfulness,

  355. one preacher says.

  356. whether you

  357. really,

  358. really mean something

  359. or you just say it flippantly

  360. and the person believes you,

  361. there is no difference.

  362. You know,

  363. you could be in a court,

  364. you could be swearing

  365. that you'll tell the truth.

  366. You can say to your friend,

  367. yes,

  368. I'll be there.

  369. Do you tell the truth

  370. about the most serious things

  371. and relax a bit

  372. on gray areas?

  373. Do you tell

  374. your friend

  375. or your flatmate

  376. or your husband

  377. or your wife

  378. or your child

  379. or your parents

  380. that you'll do something

  381. for them,

  382. that you'll buy them

  383. this gift

  384. or whatever it might be

  385. and never do it?

  386. Do you speak

  387. with people

  388. in confidentiality

  389. and you know

  390. it's confidential

  391. and they ask you

  392. not to say anything

  393. and yet you go out

  394. and speak about it

  395. anyway?

  396. Jesus says

  397. there are no levels

  398. to integrity.

  399. There is no level

  400. whatsoever to truthfulness.

  401. You can't swear

  402. by the Lord

  403. for one thing

  404. and your head

  405. for another.

  406. It's not at all

  407. about sticking to your word

  408. in one sense

  409. and not in another.

  410. No,

  411. everything you say

  412. is before God.

  413. Everything you say

  414. is by His name.

  415. you can think

  416. about any crime

  417. or police drama

  418. that you watch on TV

  419. or Netflix

  420. or wherever it is

  421. and in almost all of them

  422. one key character

  423. has all the vital information

  424. about this case

  425. that's being investigated

  426. and they say

  427. yes,

  428. I will tell you the truth

  429. as long as I'm not

  430. on the record

  431. and so they meet

  432. in some dim,

  433. shady lit street

  434. or they go to the station

  435. and the cameras

  436. are turned off

  437. and maybe whatever

  438. is said is true

  439. in the program

  440. but it's not

  441. a recorded truth.

  442. It's not under oath

  443. and so,

  444. you know,

  445. it usually means

  446. you get five more episodes

  447. out of this show

  448. because the police

  449. have still got to prove it anyway.

  450. Jesus is making the point

  451. that,

  452. you know,

  453. we can look at it

  454. in the same way.

  455. Jesus is making the point

  456. that

  457. recorded or not recorded truth,

  458. the meaningfulness

  459. of your words

  460. he is saying

  461. does not depend

  462. on the situation.

  463. Your words

  464. are always meaningful.

  465. Your words

  466. outside the court

  467. are as real

  468. and as binding

  469. as your words

  470. in the court.

  471. The Pharisees,

  472. you know,

  473. they can't use formulas

  474. to escape that

  475. and nor can we.

  476. One more thing here

  477. and we'll go on

  478. to the last point.

  479. Words are a big deal.

  480. Jesus makes that point

  481. over and over

  482. and over again

  483. in Matthew

  484. and in the other Gospels.

  485. Paul and James

  486. constantly bring us

  487. back to that

  488. in their letters as well.

  489. Words are a big deal

  490. and

  491. you think,

  492. okay,

  493. you think,

  494. you look at the news

  495. and you think

  496. on an international level

  497. there is constant scrutiny

  498. between countries

  499. or between a leader

  500. and his country

  501. or his people

  502. today

  503. and throughout history.

  504. bring that down

  505. to a personal level.

  506. Bring that down

  507. to you and your sibling

  508. or your parents

  509. or your family

  510. or social group.

  511. Where does tension

  512. come from?

  513. Does it come from

  514. your words

  515. to one another?

  516. Promises maybe

  517. that you don't keep?

  518. Good things

  519. that you speak about

  520. but never follow up on?

  521. Not being honest?

  522. Why?

  523. Why is there such a breakdown

  524. on a social

  525. and an international scale?

  526. Because words

  527. are important.

  528. Words

  529. are deep

  530. and we don't

  531. always mean what we say.

  532. We hide the truth

  533. and we're dishonest.

  534. Jesus says,

  535. don't

  536. treat your words lightly.

  537. There is no level

  538. to integrity.

  539. You are always

  540. before God.

  541. You are constantly

  542. in his presence

  543. and everything you say

  544. is before him.

  545. everything you say

  546. leads to joy

  547. or leads to breakdown

  548. in your relationships.

  549. Do we mean

  550. what we say?

  551. Will we be people

  552. of honesty?

  553. He's asking.

  554. Will we be people

  555. of integrity

  556. with his kingdom life

  557. that we've been given?

  558. Secondly then,

  559. in light of that,

  560. in light of being

  561. in God's presence

  562. all the time,

  563. how to mean

  564. what we say?

  565. Jesus doesn't

  566. complicate it

  567. at all

  568. in this passage.

  569. Let what you say

  570. be simply yes

  571. or no.

  572. Anything more than this

  573. comes from evil.

  574. Mean what you say,

  575. Jesus says.

  576. You don't need oaths.

  577. Just think about

  578. what you're going to say

  579. and mean it.

  580. It's probably

  581. helpful

  582. at this point

  583. to give a couple

  584. of situations

  585. where we don't

  586. follow up on this.

  587. There are quite a lot

  588. but just a couple.

  589. There are

  590. circumstances

  591. where you can't

  592. keep your word.

  593. You know,

  594. emergencies come,

  595. things happen

  596. and you can't

  597. follow through

  598. on what you're

  599. saying you'll do.

  600. Other factors

  601. impact on what

  602. you've said.

  603. Altogether,

  604. apart from the

  605. 99% of the time

  606. that you can keep

  607. your word,

  608. there are genuine

  609. reasons why we

  610. can't follow through.

  611. And we know that.

  612. Another thing,

  613. we take oaths

  614. in the courtroom.

  615. And this has

  616. historically been

  617. where a lot

  618. of Christians

  619. come and they say,

  620. well,

  621. Jesus says we

  622. can't take oaths

  623. so we're not

  624. going to be in

  625. the court.

  626. When Jesus says

  627. take no oaths

  628. and simply let

  629. your yes be yes

  630. and your no be no,

  631. he's not saying

  632. you can't take oaths

  633. at all.

  634. The whole reason

  635. oaths exist is

  636. because humans

  637. are prone to

  638. dishonesty

  639. and the world

  640. knows it.

  641. So, you know,

  642. telling the truth,

  643. telling the truth

  644. in the court

  645. is a serious

  646. issue.

  647. And unfortunately,

  648. you know,

  649. you can't just

  650. walk into the

  651. court and say,

  652. can you just

  653. believe me?

  654. Here, I'm a

  655. Christian.

  656. You know,

  657. I'm going to

  658. tell my truth

  659. all the time.

  660. No, you shouldn't

  661. need an oath

  662. as a Christian,

  663. but the external

  664. world asks that

  665. you would take

  666. one.

  667. He's only

  668. telling you,

  669. Jesus is only

  670. telling you

  671. not to use

  672. them for

  673. loopholes.

  674. It's simply

  675. a case of

  676. being truthful

  677. or not.

  678. There are many

  679. more,

  680. but Jesus'

  681. point is

  682. not to

  683. throw them

  684. out.

  685. You know,

  686. he takes one

  687. before he dies.

  688. Paul takes

  689. them in his

  690. letters.

  691. Jesus doesn't

  692. throw them

  693. out, but he

  694. just says,

  695. you're meant

  696. to be honest

  697. all the time,

  698. no matter who

  699. you're speaking

  700. to.

  701. Okay,

  702. apart from

  703. that,

  704. apart from

  705. that,

  706. Jesus says,

  707. let your

  708. yes be

  709. yes and

  710. your no be

  711. no.

  712. Are you

  713. speaking to

  714. your children

  715. and you

  716. promise them

  717. something?

  718. When you

  719. say yes

  720. and you are

  721. completely within

  722. your power to

  723. follow through

  724. in that,

  725. are you

  726. serious about

  727. that,

  728. Jesus asks.

  729. You know,

  730. when you phone

  731. into work sick,

  732. and you

  733. say you

  734. can't come

  735. in,

  736. is that

  737. really a

  738. yes?

  739. Or are you

  740. fit for

  741. everything else

  742. in the day?

  743. When you

  744. say to

  745. someone,

  746. I'll be

  747. praying for

  748. you,

  749. will you

  750. be praying

  751. for them?

  752. What's the

  753. difference?

  754. Your child,

  755. your boss,

  756. your friend

  757. in church,

  758. you know,

  759. it feels

  760. like keeping

  761. your word

  762. has more

  763. or less

  764. impact in

  765. each of

  766. these situations.

  767. No,

  768. no,

  769. Jesus says,

  770. there are

  771. no levels,

  772. there are

  773. no levels

  774. to

  775. integrity.

  776. There's

  777. no point

  778. in swearing

  779. by heaven

  780. or by the

  781. earth or

  782. Jerusalem

  783. or your

  784. head.

  785. Your words

  786. are always

  787. serious.

  788. It doesn't

  789. matter who

  790. you're speaking

  791. to.

  792. All your

  793. words are

  794. before God.

  795. They're all

  796. binding,

  797. like your

  798. yes,

  799. be yes,

  800. and your

  801. no,

  802. be no,

  803. he says.

  804. Be a

  805. person of

  806. truth,

  807. be a

  808. person of

  809. integrity,

  810. and fulfill

  811. your purpose

  812. as a

  813. Christian

  814. in the

  815. world.

  816. One more

  817. thing,

  818. and then we

  819. can finish

  820. more positively,

  821. I think.

  822. To mean what

  823. you say,

  824. to speak with

  825. integrity,

  826. to be upright

  827. and honest

  828. about what

  829. you're going

  830. to do.

  831. It's about

  832. bringing joy

  833. into other

  834. people's

  835. lives.

  836. joy and

  837. not hurt

  838. into your

  839. relationships.

  840. In Hebrews

  841. 6,

  842. the writer,

  843. he's reminding

  844. us what God

  845. has promised

  846. to Abraham,

  847. and what he's

  848. promised to

  849. his offspring,

  850. that they

  851. would be

  852. blessed.

  853. And it

  854. says,

  855. God swore

  856. this would

  857. happen.

  858. By

  859. myself,

  860. I have

  861. sworn,

  862. God says.

  863. And,

  864. you know,

  865. we've said

  866. that taking

  867. an oath,

  868. saying I

  869. promise,

  870. making a

  871. vow is a

  872. signal that

  873. us humans

  874. aren't always

  875. good at

  876. keeping our

  877. word.

  878. And so,

  879. if God

  880. cannot lie,

  881. why swear?

  882. Why swear by

  883. his own

  884. name?

  885. When we

  886. swear,

  887. you know,

  888. we're saying

  889. that we're

  890. dishonest.

  891. We're saying

  892. that our

  893. words are

  894. weak.

  895. When God

  896. swears,

  897. he's saying

  898. that our

  899. faith is

  900. weak,

  901. not his

  902. words,

  903. but our

  904. faith.

  905. And in

  906. pursuit of

  907. our

  908. encouragement

  909. and joy,

  910. even this

  911. week,

  912. in pursuit

  913. of building

  914. you up in

  915. your faith,

  916. in pursuit

  917. of our

  918. hope that

  919. we will one

  920. day be with

  921. him forever

  922. and ever,

  923. God says,

  924. I swear,

  925. I swear that

  926. will happen.

  927. He knows

  928. our faith is

  929. weak,

  930. and he says,

  931. you can

  932. really believe

  933. the promises

  934. that I've

  935. made.

  936. to all of

  937. Abraham's

  938. descendants,

  939. to us,

  940. to the

  941. church,

  942. you can

  943. really believe

  944. these promises.

  945. He keeps

  946. his word,

  947. he swears,

  948. God means

  949. what he says

  950. to us.

  951. We mentioned

  952. at the start

  953. this covenant

  954. that was made

  955. by the triune

  956. God before

  957. time,

  958. the covenant

  959. of redemption

  960. has been called.

  961. God promised

  962. before time

  963. to save

  964. his creation

  965. and the

  966. people who

  967. would reject

  968. him.

  969. In John

  970. 10,

  971. Jesus speaks

  972. about this

  973. charge that's

  974. been given

  975. to him by

  976. the Father

  977. to die

  978. and rise

  979. again.

  980. It was an

  981. agreement.

  982. It was a

  983. word that

  984. Jesus kept.

  985. Tonight,

  986. if you are

  987. wondering why

  988. telling the

  989. truth and

  990. being people

  991. of integrity

  992. is such a

  993. big deal,

  994. if you are

  995. not a

  996. Christian

  997. and you

  998. wonder why

  999. honesty is

  1000. so important,

  1001. it was

  1002. because of

  1003. the integrity

  1004. of Jesus.

  1005. It was

  1006. because of

  1007. him keeping

  1008. his word

  1009. and leaving

  1010. his perfect

  1011. home and

  1012. living out

  1013. this life

  1014. of tears

  1015. and loss

  1016. and mocking

  1017. and abandonment

  1018. and death.

  1019. It was because

  1020. of that.

  1021. It was because

  1022. he kept

  1023. his word

  1024. that you

  1025. can be

  1026. saved.

  1027. Knowing

  1028. God,

  1029. knowing God

  1030. tonight and

  1031. being forgiven

  1032. for every

  1033. broken word

  1034. or promise

  1035. you've made,

  1036. having real

  1037. joy in

  1038. your soul

  1039. is possible

  1040. because Jesus

  1041. kept his

  1042. word.

  1043. Truth,

  1044. honesty,

  1045. integrity

  1046. is at

  1047. the heart

  1048. of God's

  1049. relationship

  1050. with man.

  1051. Will you

  1052. believe in

  1053. him?

  1054. Will you

  1055. trust him?

  1056. And if you

  1057. have done,

  1058. do you

  1059. believe tonight

  1060. if you're a

  1061. Christian that

  1062. God keeps

  1063. his promises

  1064. every single

  1065. day?

  1066. I wasn't

  1067. sure if I

  1068. had time

  1069. at this

  1070. point,

  1071. but this

  1072. afternoon I

  1073. just looked

  1074. at a list

  1075. of all

  1076. God's

  1077. promises,

  1078. or not all

  1079. of them,

  1080. but many

  1081. of them

  1082. in the

  1083. Bible.

  1084. And there

  1085. are so

  1086. many.

  1087. I'm just

  1088. going to

  1089. list a

  1090. few here

  1091. that were

  1092. helpful to

  1093. me as I

  1094. look to

  1095. this.

  1096. 1 John

    1 John 1:9

  1097. 1,

  1098. verse 9,

  1099. if we

  1100. confess our

  1101. sins,

  1102. John says,

  1103. he is

  1104. faithful and

  1105. just to

  1106. forgive us

  1107. our sins

  1108. and to

  1109. cleanse us

  1110. from all

  1111. unrighteousness.

  1112. This week,

  1113. think about

  1114. Matthew 11,

  1115. Jesus'

  1116. words,

  1117. come to

  1118. me,

  1119. all who

  1120. labor and

  1121. are heavy

  1122. laden,

  1123. and I

  1124. will give

  1125. you rest.

  1126. Take my

  1127. yoke upon

  1128. you and

  1129. learn from

  1130. me,

  1131. for I

  1132. am gentle

  1133. and lowly

  1134. in heart,

  1135. and you

  1136. will find

  1137. rest for

  1138. your souls.

  1139. Matthew

    Matthew 11:9

  1140. 11,

  1141. verse 9,

  1142. if you

  1143. then,

  1144. though you

  1145. are evil,

  1146. know how

  1147. to give

  1148. good gifts

  1149. to your

  1150. children,

  1151. how much

  1152. more will

  1153. the Father

  1154. in heaven

  1155. give good

  1156. gifts to

  1157. those who

  1158. ask him?

  1159. Revelation

    Revelation 21:4

  1160. 21,

  1161. verse 4,

  1162. one day,

  1163. one day,

  1164. he will

  1165. wipe away

  1166. every tear

  1167. from their

  1168. eyes,

  1169. and death

  1170. shall be

  1171. no more.

  1172. Neither

  1173. shall there

  1174. be mourning,

  1175. nor crying,

  1176. nor pain

  1177. anymore,

  1178. for the

  1179. former things

  1180. have passed

  1181. away.

  1182. 2 Corinthians

  1183. 1,

  1184. 20,

  1185. for all

  1186. the promises

  1187. of God

  1188. find their

  1189. yes in

  1190. Christ.

  1191. God

  1192. pursues

  1193. your

  1194. encouragement

  1195. and your

  1196. joy and

  1197. faith every

  1198. week.

  1199. He will

  1200. do it

  1201. this week

  1202. by keeping

  1203. his word.

  1204. He brings

  1205. lost people

  1206. home and

  1207. he keeps

  1208. them there.

  1209. He means

  1210. what he

  1211. says.

  1212. His promises

  1213. are all

  1214. yes in

  1215. Christ.

  1216. A few

  1217. things just

  1218. to think

  1219. about this

  1220. week and

  1221. we'll be

  1222. done.

  1223. Just four

  1224. things you

  1225. can ask

  1226. yourself.

  1227. Do you

  1228. treat your

  1229. words more

  1230. or less

  1231. seriously

  1232. depending on

  1233. who you're

  1234. talking to

  1235. or what

  1236. the situation

  1237. is?

  1238. Is your

  1239. speech

  1240. flippant

  1241. or idle

  1242. in some

  1243. place and

  1244. more serious

  1245. with someone

  1246. else?

  1247. Do you

  1248. make the

  1249. effort to

  1250. really mean

  1251. what you

  1252. say?

  1253. If you

  1254. say you'll

  1255. do something

  1256. for your

  1257. boss or

  1258. your friends

  1259. or your

  1260. children,

  1261. will you?

  1262. If someone

  1263. asks you to

  1264. pray for

  1265. them,

  1266. will you?

  1267. Is your

  1268. yes a yes

  1269. and no

  1270. no?

  1271. Will you

  1272. remember that

  1273. keeping your

  1274. word and

  1275. being honest

  1276. and being

  1277. a person

  1278. of integrity

  1279. is about

  1280. building up

  1281. joy in

  1282. other people's

  1283. lives?

  1284. No matter

  1285. how young

  1286. or old.

  1287. Will you

  1288. remember that

  1289. it's about

  1290. being a

  1291. faint picture

  1292. of Jesus

  1293. and helping

  1294. others see

  1295. him?

  1296. Will you

  1297. remember

  1298. that God

  1299. is a God

  1300. who keeps

  1301. his promises?

  1302. promises.

  1303. We are

  1304. all oath

  1305. breakers,

  1306. the Bible

  1307. says,

  1308. but Jesus

  1309. will never

  1310. cast any

  1311. out.

  1312. We heard

  1313. that at

  1314. the start.

  1315. There is

  1316. forgiveness

  1317. with him

  1318. for every

  1319. broken word

  1320. said to

  1321. all who

  1322. trust in

  1323. him.

  1324. He will

  1325. never turn

  1326. any away.

  1327. Will you

  1328. this week

  1329. hold on

  1330. to his

  1331. promises?

  1332. Let's

  1333. pray.

  1334. Lord,

  1335. we ask

  1336. that you

  1337. would help

  1338. us to be

  1339. people of

  1340. our word.

  1341. Help us

  1342. as we

  1343. think about

  1344. this kingdom

  1345. life that

  1346. you've

  1347. given us.

  1348. Faint

  1349. pictures of

  1350. Jesus.

  1351. Help us

  1352. to be

  1353. people of

  1354. integrity,

  1355. people who

  1356. keep our

  1357. word and

  1358. mean what

  1359. we say.

  1360. Help us

  1361. above all

  1362. Lord to

  1363. hold on to

  1364. your promises

  1365. to us.

  1366. That even

  1367. tomorrow as

  1368. we get up

  1369. we will

  1370. know that

  1371. we are in

  1372. the arms

  1373. of a loving

  1374. Father.

  1375. Help us

  1376. and be

  1377. well as

  1378. we ask

  1379. for Jesus

  1380. sake.

  1381. Amen.
