  1. Luke chapter 9, verses 57 to 62.

    Luke 9:57–62

  2. As they were going along the road, someone said to him,

  3. I will follow you wherever you go.

  4. And Jesus said to him,

  5. Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests,

  6. but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

  7. To another he said, Follow me.

  8. But he said, Lord, let me first go and bury my father.

  9. And Jesus said to him, Leave the dead to bury their own dead.

  10. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.

  11. Yet another said, I will follow you, Lord,

  12. but let me first say farewell to those at my home.

  13. Jesus said to him, No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back

  14. is fit for the kingdom of God.

  15. This is the word of God.

  16. One thing that really annoys me, people,

  17. one thing that really annoys me is when you commit to something

  18. and there's a hidden little sentence,

  19. a hidden cost, something they didn't mention.

  20. But now that you've signed a contract,

  21. now that you've committed to that thing,

  22. you have to deal with it, you have to pay it.

  23. For example, you buy a house or a car.

  24. I've never bought any of those things,

  25. but I imagine it's a bit like that.

  26. Or you subscribe, maybe.

  27. Okay, you subscribe to Amazon Prime

  28. and you think, Okay, now I can watch whatever movie I like

  29. and then you find the movie you want to watch

  30. and you have to still pay for it.

  31. I hate that.

  32. Maybe some of you hate that too.

  33. You know who also hates this kind of dishonesty?

  34. Jesus.

  35. The Bible.

  36. Which is why Jesus is always up front,

  37. very straight to the point,

  38. very clear about any cost that is involved.

  39. And to be honest, it's a bit paradox.

  40. It's a bit of an irony in our Christian faith

  41. because on one side we teach that grace is for free.

  42. There is nothing you can do,

  43. nothing you can bring to the table.

  44. And yet on the other side,

  45. we teach that it'll cost you everything.

  46. It'll cost you your whole life.

  47. And that is very difficult to hold together.

  48. It's very difficult to make sense of that sometimes.

  49. But I think in this passage here this morning,

  50. we can see a little bit of what Jesus means.

  51. This is, by the way,

  52. not part of any sermon series

  53. that is happening at the moment.

  54. I think Corey didn't want me to let me mess up

  55. his Genesis series.

  56. Instead, I'm doing a standalone sermon.

  57. But it's a very important topic.

  58. And we're here in Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  59. It's a big chapter.

  60. There's a lot happening in that chapter.

  61. I recommend you go home this afternoon and read it.

  62. There's a lot happening.

  63. But in between these events,

  64. Jesus is teaching what it means to follow him.

  65. For example,

  66. in chapter 9, verses 22 to 24,

  67. he says,

  68. The Son of Man must suffer many things

  69. and be rejected by the elders

  70. and chief priests and scribes

  71. and be killed

  72. and on the third day be raised.

  73. And he said to all,

  74. If anyone would come after me,

  75. let him deny himself

  76. and take up his cross daily

  77. and follow me.

  78. For whoever would save his life will lose it.

  79. But whoever loses his life for my sake

  80. will save it.

  81. That is a hard saying.

  82. And then, of course,

  83. we have today's passage.

  84. It's a passage that I have often wondered about

  85. because the responses of these three people

  86. that Jesus is interacting with,

  87. they are weird.

  88. And they're strange.

  89. And they seem really, really harsh.

  90. And I've struggled with that.

  91. And maybe some of you have struggled with that.

  92. So let's look at that.

  93. Let's look at these three people

  94. that Jesus is talking to.

  95. And the passage starts with the verse

  96. as they were going along the road.

  97. So just for context,

  98. Jesus and the disciples are on the road,

  99. on the road to Jerusalem,

  100. to be more specific.

  101. And on this kind of road,

  102. you would have met a lot of different people.

  103. It's a bit like in the UK,

  104. every road leads to London.

  105. In Europe, every road leads to Rome.

  106. And I guess in Israel,

  107. all the roads lead to Jerusalem.

  108. And it would have been a main road.

  109. Jesus would have talked to a lot of people.

  110. So not all of these interactions

  111. are written down in the gospel for us.

  112. Luke is very specific

  113. about what he writes down to make a point.

  114. So let's look at this first encounter

  115. that Jesus has with that person on the road.

  116. So the first person here comes and asks Jesus.

  117. Oh, not really.

  118. He doesn't really ask.

  119. He makes a statement.

  120. He says, I will follow you wherever you go.

  121. I'll be there.

  122. I'll go with you wherever you go.

  123. Why is he saying that?

  124. I think it's pretty obvious.

  125. Jesus is a fascinating guy.

  126. He's very, very interesting,

  127. to say the least.

  128. You know, people would have wondered,

  129. did you see what that guy did?

  130. Did you see how he healed that person?

  131. Did you see the way he preached?

  132. Did you see his disciples?

  133. They were given authority to even cast out demons.

  134. It's no surprise that people want to follow Jesus.

  135. He's very, very special as a person,

  136. very polarizing.

  137. And that person says,

  138. I will follow you, Jesus, wherever you go.

  139. It's interesting.

  140. If we know the gospels,

  141. if you've been a Christian for a longer time

  142. and you've read the gospels,

  143. then you will know that Peter says a similar thing later on

  144. and just before he betrays Jesus.

  145. I will go wherever you go.

  146. And it's something,

  147. if you're a Christian,

  148. that you maybe have struggled with before,

  149. wanting to follow Jesus,

  150. come what may,

  151. but not actually being aware of everything that entails,

  152. of the consequences that such a decision

  153. or such a commitment could have on your life.

  154. Sometimes we say things,

  155. we do things without knowing

  156. what it will actually look like.

  157. And that's fine.

  158. I think part of that is very normal.

  159. How many of you got married

  160. without knowing how much work

  161. a healthy marriage includes?

  162. How many of you committed to a job

  163. without knowing how much work

  164. there actually was to do?

  165. How many of you have committed to things

  166. that you weren't really prepared for?

  167. That is fine.

  168. Jesus is not saying,

  169. you have to be perfect to follow me.

  170. It's the opposite.

  171. Jesus wants you to know

  172. that you will learn a lot

  173. and it'll be hard.

  174. Jesus' response here

  175. is actually not very inviting.

  176. It's strange.

  177. But he wants to make sure

  178. that you know what you're asking for.

  179. He doesn't just say,

  180. all right, no problem.

  181. Just walk with the other 12 guys.

  182. If we have a 13th guy, that's fine.

  183. That is not what he says.

  184. Instead, he says,

  185. foxes have holes,

  186. birds of the air have nests,

  187. but the son of man

  188. has nowhere to lay his head.

  189. A very strange way

  190. to answer a question like that.

  191. But the point is that

  192. even a fox,

  193. even a bird,

  194. have a place that they can call home,

  195. a base where they are safe,

  196. where they can lie down to rest,

  197. where they can sleep.

  198. And Jesus doesn't have that.

  199. In the chapter before,

  200. in the scene before,

  201. we read that Jesus

  202. was just rejected

  203. in a Samaritan village.

  204. So Jesus is saying

  205. not necessarily

  206. that he will never have a place

  207. to stay at,

  208. but he is saying

  209. that he will be rejected.

  210. He is on his way to Jerusalem.

  211. We know what happens in Jerusalem.

  212. He's got his eyes

  213. fixed on the cross,

  214. on the mission

  215. that lies before him.

  216. This is not an easy way for him.

  217. Even the animals

  218. have a secure space,

  219. but Jesus says,

  220. I'm in the open.

  221. I'm vulnerable.

  222. And he already has said

  223. what needs to happen.

  224. The Son of Man

  225. must suffer many things

  226. and be rejected

  227. by the elders,

  228. chief priests, and scribes

  229. and even be killed.

  230. And note how he talks

  231. about himself

  232. as the Son of Man.

  233. Now, this person

  234. that he would have talked to

  235. would have been a Jew.

  236. They would have been

  237. probably fairly familiar

  238. with the Old Testament.

  239. In Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  240. it says,

  241. Behold,

  242. with the clouds of heaven

  243. there came one

  244. like a Son of Man.

  245. That's where this term

  246. comes from.

  247. And he came to the

  248. Ancient of Days

  249. and was presented before him.

  250. And to him was given

  251. dominion and glory

  252. and a kingdom

  253. that all peoples,

  254. nations,

  255. and languages

  256. should serve him.

  257. Now, that's very remarkable.

  258. We read this

  259. and we,

  260. as New Testament believers,

  261. in the 21st century,

  262. we understand

  263. why Jesus was saying

  264. these things,

  265. that Jesus actually

  266. did achieve all these things,

  267. that he did bring

  268. the kingdom of God,

  269. that all peoples,

  270. nations,

  271. and languages

  272. should serve him.

  273. But for the person

  274. standing there

  275. in front of Jesus,

  276. this must have been weird.

  277. This must have been strange.

  278. Jesus,

  279. a rejected leader?

  280. I thought to you

  281. belong dominion

  282. and power.

  283. But now you say

  284. you will be rejected

  285. and killed?

  286. So this is not just about

  287. having a hard time yourself,

  288. it's about

  289. following a rejected leader.

  290. We don't know

  291. why exactly Jesus

  292. chooses this picture

  293. of the fox

  294. and the bird,

  295. but he probably knew

  296. he was talking to,

  297. he knew the person,

  298. and he's saying,

  299. you can't just turn around,

  300. you can't just go back home

  301. when you've had enough.

  302. We are on the road,

  303. we are doing this.

  304. This is either

  305. you're in or you're out.

  306. There's no

  307. half-heartedness in this.

  308. So Jesus is saying,

  309. I want you to follow me,

  310. but I want you

  311. to mean it.

  312. If you want to follow Jesus,

  313. then mean it

  314. and do it.

  315. The second encounter,

  316. the second guy,

  317. the second guy

  318. is a little bit different.

  319. Jesus actually goes to him

  320. and Jesus asks him a question.

  321. He says,

  322. follow me.

  323. So this time

  324. Jesus sees someone,

  325. he commands him

  326. to follow him.

  327. And the man says,

  328. sure,

  329. but I need to bury

  330. my father first.

  331. What would your reaction be

  332. if you were Jesus?

  333. I think 99.9%

  334. of all of us here

  335. would say,

  336. your father died?

  337. Okay,

  338. you go home

  339. and you go

  340. mourn with your family

  341. and you bury him

  342. and you take your time.

  343. And Jesus doesn't say that.

  344. And it's really hard

  345. to understand

  346. why Jesus doesn't say that.

  347. And I think most of us

  348. probably struggle with that.

  349. It's difficult.

  350. Why does Jesus,

  351. out of all people,

  352. respond like this?

  353. I thought he valued family.

  354. I thought he wept

  355. even when his friend

  356. Lazarus died.

  357. Surely he understands.

  358. And one thing

  359. that really helped me

  360. to understand this passage

  361. better is

  362. to read a little bit

  363. about the context

  364. of Middle Eastern culture.

  365. There is a scholar

  366. called Kenneth Bailey

  367. who has lived over there

  368. for many, many years

  369. and he's been teaching

  370. over there

  371. and he writes

  372. about this phrase,

  373. let me go

  374. and bury my father.

  375. And this phrase

  376. to the Middle Eastern person

  377. means something like,

  378. let me go

  379. and serve my father

  380. while he is alive

  381. and after he dies

  382. I will bury him

  383. and come.

  384. So he says

  385. the father might be

  386. perfectly healthy.

  387. He still has another

  388. 20 years to live.

  389. But the phrase means

  390. let me go and serve him

  391. and once he dies

  392. I can follow you.

  393. An Arab commentator

  394. writes this,

  395. he says,

  396. if his father

  397. had really died

  398. why then was he not

  399. at the very moment

  400. at home

  401. keeping vigil

  402. over the body

  403. of his father?

  404. In reality

  405. he intends to defer

  406. the matter of following Jesus

  407. to a distant future

  408. when his father dies

  409. as an old man

  410. who knows when?

  411. Little does he know

  412. that Jesus

  413. in a very short time

  414. will himself

  415. give up his spirit.

  416. Now that changes things

  417. doesn't it?

  418. Now if that's true

  419. then Jesus is actually

  420. not rude to this man

  421. not allowing him

  422. to mourn

  423. over his dead father

  424. but actually

  425. this is about

  426. something else.

  427. Jesus is asking

  428. this man

  429. to follow him

  430. but this man's family

  431. is holding him back.

  432. His cultural traditions

  433. and customs

  434. are holding him back.

  435. His parents

  436. would be angry

  437. with him

  438. if he went

  439. and followed Jesus.

  440. His neighbors

  441. would say

  442. oh what a bad young man

  443. so selfish

  444. doesn't even care

  445. about his own father.

  446. It's about

  447. peer pressures.

  448. This is very

  449. applicable to us

  450. not necessarily

  451. because we have

  452. the same culture

  453. but

  454. what are your

  455. peer pressures?

  456. What is holding you

  457. back

  458. to follow Christ?

  459. What is holding you

  460. back

  461. to proclaim

  462. the kingdom of God?

  463. Will your work colleague

  464. laugh at you?

  465. Will your friends

  466. think that you're weird?

  467. Might they even be

  468. angry?

  469. And of course

  470. we hear all the things

  471. that society is

  472. throwing at Christianity

  473. and it's really

  474. really hard

  475. to stand for

  476. what you believe

  477. in all of that.

  478. We can see that

  479. in decisions

  480. that are being made

  481. in politics

  482. and we can see it

  483. in what we

  484. watch and consume

  485. in the media.

  486. is that hindering

  487. you

  488. to follow Jesus

  489. wholeheartedly?

  490. It's very

  491. very difficult.

  492. The third encounter

  493. we have the third guy.

  494. Third encounter

  495. verse 61

  496. it's a bit like

  497. the first one

  498. again

  499. he's offering

  500. he's volunteering

  501. to follow Jesus

  502. but he has

  503. some conditions.

  504. He says to Jesus

  505. let me first say

  506. farewell

  507. to those

  508. at my home

  509. and again

  510. we think

  511. okay

  512. surely this is allowed

  513. surely

  514. surely

  515. he can go home

  516. and say goodbye

  517. to his family

  518. and then catch up

  519. with Jesus

  520. and the disciples

  521. on the road.

  522. Especially

  523. if you've read

  524. the Old Testament

  525. there is a very

  526. similar scene

  527. in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 19 chapter mention

  528. chapter 19

  529. we read about

  530. Elijah

  531. the prophet Elijah

  532. calling Elisha

  533. Elisha

  534. I don't know

  535. how to say his name

  536. what happens there?

  537. Elisha

  538. he is asked

  539. to follow Elijah

  540. and then he

  541. asks him

  542. can I first

  543. kiss my parents

  544. goodbye?

  545. Can I first

  546. say goodbye

  547. to my parents?

  548. And Elijah

  549. says yes

  550. that's fine

  551. and Elisha

  552. goes home

  553. and he butchers

  554. a pair of oxen

  555. and they have

  556. a wee barbecue

  557. and everyone's

  558. happy

  559. and they say

  560. goodbye

  561. and it's all good

  562. and then

  563. Elisha

  564. follows Elijah

  565. and in this scene

  566. Jesus doesn't

  567. allow it

  568. why?

  569. That is strange

  570. it's very harsh

  571. and I think

  572. the first thing

  573. to say is

  574. that Jesus

  575. is more important

  576. than Elijah

  577. that is one

  578. thing to say

  579. that he needs

  580. him to follow

  581. him now

  582. but again

  583. the cultural

  584. background

  585. we need to

  586. take that into

  587. account

  588. the importance

  589. of family

  590. saying goodbye

  591. here means

  592. not only

  593. to say goodbye

  594. but also

  595. to ask for

  596. permission

  597. you see what

  598. the problem

  599. here is

  600. the person

  601. is saying

  602. to Jesus

  603. can I first

  604. ask my father

  605. if he actually

  606. allows me

  607. to go with you

  608. the authority

  609. of his father

  610. is greater

  611. than Jesus

  612. authority

  613. and in that

  614. culture

  615. the father

  616. is supreme

  617. and the

  618. relationship

  619. between parents

  620. and the son

  621. is so much

  622. much more

  623. closer than

  624. here in our

  625. 21st century

  626. western world

  627. where people

  628. don't even care

  629. about their parents

  630. very much

  631. sometimes

  632. that

  633. would not

  634. be the case

  635. back in

  636. Jesus day

  637. Kenneth Bailey

  638. he taught

  639. a class

  640. of Middle

  641. Eastern

  642. seminary

  643. students

  644. this very

  645. text

  646. and he

  647. explained

  648. to them

  649. that

  650. Jesus

  651. authority

  652. is higher

  653. than the

  654. father's

  655. authority

  656. and they

  657. all were

  658. just

  659. shocked

  660. they

  661. couldn't

  662. believe

  663. it

  664. so again

  665. is Jesus

  666. the highest

  667. authority

  668. in your

  669. life

  670. or is

  671. there

  672. someone

  673. else

  674. something

  675. else

  676. that has

  677. a higher

  678. authority

  679. in your

  680. life

  681. Jesus

  682. responds

  683. to the

  684. guy

  685. by

  686. giving him

  687. a picture

  688. Jesus

  689. uses an

  690. illustration

  691. here

  692. he talks

  693. about

  694. a plow

  695. what's

  696. that all

  697. about

  698. you see

  699. a plow

  700. I've done

  701. my cultural

  702. background

  703. research

  704. a plow

  705. in that

  706. time

  707. would have

  708. been quite

  709. difficult

  710. to handle

  711. in one

  712. hand

  713. you hold

  714. the plow

  715. in the

  716. other

  717. hand

  718. you

  719. you

  720. have

  721. a

  722. goat

  723. like

  724. a

  725. little

  726. stick

  727. two

  728. yards

  729. long

  730. with

  731. an

  732. iron

  733. spike

  734. and

  735. you

  736. use

  737. that

  738. to

  739. spike

  740. the

  741. oxen

  742. so it

  743. goes

  744. and

  745. then

  746. you

  747. have

  748. to

  749. look

  750. between

  751. the

  752. legs

  753. of the

  754. oxen

  755. to watch

  756. the

  757. furrow

  758. and all

  759. of that

  760. obviously

  761. needs

  762. attention

  763. you need

  764. to do

  765. all of

  766. that

  767. at the

  768. same

  769. time

  770. all

  771. hands

  772. on

  773. if

  774. you

  775. look

  776. around

  777. the

  778. whole

  779. time

  780. then

  781. you're

  782. not

  783. going

  784. straight

  785. anymore

  786. you need

  787. straight

  788. lines

  789. because

  790. you

  791. would

  792. plow

  793. the

  794. field

  795. multiple

  796. times

  797. and

  798. if

  799. you

  800. look

  801. around

  802. the

  803. lines

  804. they

  805. wouldn't

  806. be

  807. straight

  808. anymore

  809. you

  810. would

  811. do

  812. damage

  813. to

  814. the

  815. field

  816. that

  817. is

  818. what

  819. Jesus

  820. is

  821. saying

  822. in

  823. that

  824. moment

  825. this

  826. is

  827. about

  828. having

  829. maybe

  830. greater

  831. authority

  832. in your

  833. life

  834. than

  835. Jesus

  836. but

  837. it's

  838. also

  839. about

  840. looking

  841. back

  842. over

  843. your

  844. shoulders

  845. maybe

  846. you've

  847. been

  848. following

  849. Jesus

  850. for a

  851. while

  852. now

  853. and

  854. you've

  855. been

  856. looking

  857. back

  858. over

  859. your

  860. shoulders

  861. looking

  862. back

  863. to

  864. things

  865. that

  866. seem

  867. more

  868. attractive

  869. to

  870. you

  871. more

  872. desirable

  873. things

  874. that

  875. are

  876. old

  877. sin

  878. patterns

  879. maybe

  880. you've

  881. gone

  882. back

  883. to

  884. that

  885. walking

  886. away

  887. from

  888. God

  889. and

  890. the

  891. lines

  892. are

  893. going

  894. well

  895. crooked

  896. not straight

  897. anymore

  898. I

  899. don't

  900. know

  901. if

  902. any

  903. of

  904. you

  905. watch

  906. Clarkson's

  907. Farm

  908. I

  909. like

  910. Clarkson's

  911. Farm

  912. I

  913. think

  914. it's

  915. a

  916. good

  917. show

  918. I

  919. am

  920. not

  921. getting

  922. paid

  923. to

  924. say

  925. this

  926. but

  927. I

  928. remember

  929. in one

  930. of the

  931. episodes

  932. he

  933. buys

  934. this

  935. Lamborghini

  936. tractor

  937. and

  938. he

  939. hasn't

  940. quite

  941. figured

  942. out

  943. how to

  944. go

  945. in

  946. straight

  947. lines

  948. and

  949. I

  950. don't

  951. know

  952. if

  953. Flynn

  954. is

  955. here

  956. this

  957. morning

  958. but

  959. he

  960. would

  961. probably

  962. laugh

  963. at

  964. this

  965. because

  966. he's

  967. probably

  968. very

  969. good

  970. at

  971. that

  972. he

  973. does

  974. that

  975. kind

  976. of

  977. stuff

  978. and

  979. he

  980. totally

  981. gets

  982. what

  983. this

  984. is

  985. about

  986. you

  987. can't

  988. just

  989. look

  990. around

  991. you

  992. have

  993. to

  994. go

  995. and

  996. set

  997. your

  998. eyes

  999. in

  1000. front

  1001. of

  1002. you

  1003. and

  1004. see

  1005. where

  1006. you're

  1007. going

  1008. in

  1009. order

  1010. to

  1011. not

  1012. ruin

  1013. the

  1014. field

  1015. so

  1016. is

  1017. this

  1018. about

  1019. family

  1020. maybe

  1021. but

  1022. it's

  1023. more

  1024. about

  1025. the

  1026. kingdom

  1027. of

  1028. God

  1029. if

  1030. you

  1031. follow

  1032. Jesus

  1033. then

  1034. he

  1035. demands

  1036. your

  1037. whole

  1038. life

  1039. all

  1040. of

  1041. you

  1042. your

  1043. whole

  1044. heart

  1045. if

  1046. there

  1047. are

  1048. any

  1049. conflicts

  1050. in

  1051. your

  1052. life

  1053. right

  1054. now

  1055. and

  1056. that's

  1057. something

  1058. to

  1059. think

  1060. about

  1061. to

  1062. pray

  1063. about

  1064. to

  1065. reflect

  1066. on

  1067. are

  1068. there

  1069. situations

  1070. where

  1071. you

  1072. substitute

  1073. Jesus

  1074. authority

  1075. with

  1076. somebody

  1077. else's

  1078. authority

  1079. or

  1080. with

  1081. something

  1082. else

  1083. these

  1084. are

  1085. hard

  1086. sayings

  1087. that

  1088. Jesus

  1089. is

  1090. giving

  1091. us

  1092. here

  1093. to

  1094. say

  1095. the

  1096. least

  1097. but

  1098. Jesus

  1099. is

  1100. interested

  1101. in

  1102. your

  1103. commitment

  1104. often

  1105. we

  1106. talk

  1107. and

  1108. emphasize

  1109. which

  1110. is

  1111. very

  1112. good

  1113. the

  1114. love

  1115. of

  1116. God

  1117. the

  1118. grace

  1119. of

  1120. God

  1121. his

  1122. kindness

  1123. and

  1124. that

  1125. is

  1126. the

  1127. very

  1128. basis

  1129. everything

  1130. that

  1131. follows

  1132. is

  1133. built

  1134. on

  1135. that

  1136. but

  1137. in

  1138. this

  1139. passage

  1140. we

  1141. also

  1142. learn

  1143. that

  1144. following

  1145. Jesus

  1146. comes

  1147. at

  1148. a

  1149. great

  1150. cost

  1151. there

  1152. are

  1153. multiple

  1154. there

  1155. are

  1156. many

  1157. examples

  1158. of

  1159. people

  1160. who

  1161. experience

  1162. that

  1163. one

  1164. that

  1165. I

  1166. like

  1167. a

  1168. lot

  1169. is

  1170. a

  1171. man

  1172. called

  1173. Dietrich

  1174. Bonhoeffer

  1175. he

  1176. was

  1177. a

  1178. German

  1179. theologian

  1180. during

  1181. the

  1182. Nazi

  1183. regime

  1184. in

  1185. Germany

  1186. he

  1187. actually

  1188. was

  1189. involved

  1190. in a

  1191. plot

  1192. against

  1193. Adolf

  1194. Hitler

  1195. and

  1196. there

  1197. was

  1198. a

  1199. book

  1200. he

  1201. wrote

  1202. which

  1203. is

  1204. called

  1205. The

  1206. Cost

  1207. of

  1208. Discipleship

  1209. and

  1210. he

  1211. writes

  1212. this

  1213. he

  1214. writes

  1215. when

  1216. Christ

  1217. calls

  1218. a

  1219. man

  1220. he

  1221. bids

  1222. him

  1223. come

  1224. and

  1225. die

  1226. most

  1227. of

  1228. you

  1229. will

  1230. not

  1231. have

  1232. to

  1233. go

  1234. through

  1235. that

  1236. but

  1237. if

  1238. you

  1239. look

  1240. back

  1241. over

  1242. the

  1243. course

  1244. of

  1245. the

  1246. last

  1247. 2000

  1248. years

  1249. there

  1250. were

  1251. many

  1252. many

  1253. many

  1254. who

  1255. had

  1256. actually

  1257. they

  1258. had

  1259. to

  1260. endure

  1261. that

  1262. it's

  1263. still

  1264. happening

  1265. today

  1266. a

  1267. couple

  1268. of

  1269. weeks

  1270. ago

  1271. in

  1272. Congo

  1273. 70

  1274. Christians

  1275. beheaded

  1276. we're

  1277. very

  1278. privileged

  1279. here

  1280. that

  1281. we

  1282. don't

  1283. have

  1284. to

  1285. experienced

  1286. that

  1287. but

  1288. they

  1289. have

  1290. and

  1291. so

  1292. did

  1293. Dietrich

  1294. Bonhoeffer

  1295. it's

  1296. a very

  1297. extreme

  1298. example

  1299. I know

  1300. that

  1301. and

  1302. we

  1303. also

  1304. have

  1305. to

  1306. emphasize

  1307. that

  1308. God

  1309. gave

  1310. him

  1311. the

  1312. strength

  1313. to

  1314. do

  1315. that

  1316. I

  1317. don't

  1318. want

  1319. to

  1320. scare

  1321. you

  1322. away

  1323. I

  1324. don't

  1325. want

  1326. to

  1327. scare

  1328. myself

  1329. away

  1330. I

  1331. don't

  1332. want

  1333. to

  1334. make

  1335. our

  1336. faith

  1337. unattractive

  1338. but

  1339. Jesus

  1340. is

  1341. so

  1342. so

  1343. honest

  1344. here

  1345. following

  1346. Jesus

  1347. is

  1348. no

  1349. part-time

  1350. business

  1351. and

  1352. yet

  1353. it

  1354. is

  1355. so

  1356. so

  1357. worth

  1358. it

  1359. because

  1360. apart

  1361. from

  1362. Jesus

  1363. Christ

  1364. there

  1365. is

  1366. no

  1367. life

  1368. there

  1369. is

  1370. no

  1371. truth

  1372. there

  1373. is

  1374. no

  1375. way

  1376. John

  1377. 14

  1378. 6

  1379. I

  1380. think

  1381. it

  1382. is

  1383. talks

  1384. about

  1385. that

  1386. okay

  1387. let's

  1388. think

  1389. about

  1390. this

  1391. more

  1392. practically

  1393. let's

  1394. apply

  1395. this

  1396. what

  1397. makes

  1398. you

  1399. look

  1400. back

  1401. when

  1402. you

  1403. plow

  1404. the

  1405. field

  1406. what

  1407. makes

  1408. you

  1409. turn

  1410. your

  1411. head

  1412. around

  1413. what

  1414. distracts

  1415. you

  1416. from

  1417. kingdom

  1418. work

  1419. what

  1420. has

  1421. more

  1422. authority

  1423. in

  1424. your

  1425. heart

  1426. than

  1427. Jesus

  1428. sometimes

  1429. maybe

  1430. that's

  1431. just

  1432. me

  1433. but

  1434. I

  1435. like

  1436. this

  1437. chair

  1438. behind

  1439. me

  1440. and

  1441. everyone

  1442. has

  1443. this

  1444. chair

  1445. in

  1446. their

  1447. lives

  1448. it's

  1449. the

  1450. chair

  1451. of

  1452. your

  1453. heart

  1454. okay

  1455. everyone

  1456. has

  1457. this

  1458. big

  1459. old

  1460. throne

  1461. okay

  1462. you

  1463. with

  1464. me

  1465. naturally

  1466. you

  1467. want

  1468. to

  1469. sit

  1470. on

  1471. that

  1472. throne

  1473. okay

  1474. when

  1475. you

  1476. become

  1477. a

  1478. Christian

  1479. Jesus

  1480. says

  1481. I

  1482. want

  1483. to

  1484. sit

  1485. on

  1486. the

  1487. throne

  1488. I

  1489. want

  1490. to

  1491. call

  1492. the

  1493. shots

  1494. because

  1495. look

  1496. where

  1497. it

  1498. has

  1499. led

  1500. you

  1501. you

  1502. are

  1503. not

  1504. fulfilled

  1505. you

  1506. are

  1507. not

  1508. happy

  1509. you

  1510. are

  1511. still

  1512. struggling

  1513. with

  1514. your

  1515. addictions

  1516. and

  1517. your

  1518. insecurities

  1519. and

  1520. your

  1521. doubts

  1522. Jesus

  1523. wants

  1524. to

  1525. sit

  1526. on

  1527. the

  1528. throne

  1529. every

  1530. time

  1531. we

  1532. turn

  1533. our

  1534. head

  1535. around

  1536. it's

  1537. like

  1538. we

  1539. take

  1540. Jesus

  1541. and

  1542. drag

  1543. him

  1544. away

  1545. from

  1546. that

  1547. throne

  1548. and

  1549. we

  1550. want

  1551. to

  1552. sit

  1553. on

  1554. there

  1555. that

  1556. is

  1557. the

  1558. picture

  1559. we

  1560. are

  1561. getting

  1562. here

  1563. what

  1564. is

  1565. it

  1566. for

  1567. you

  1568. !

  1569. your

  1570. !

  1571. family

  1572. pride

  1573. the

  1574. list

  1575. could

  1576. go

  1577. on

  1578. and

  1579. on

  1580. and

  1581. on

  1582. and

  1583. we

  1584. have

  1585. to

  1586. be

  1587. very

  1588. careful

  1589. and

  1590. consider

  1591. this

  1592. and

  1593. reflect

  1594. on

  1595. this

  1596. if

  1597. you

  1598. have

  1599. been

  1600. watching

  1601. back

  1602. over

  1603. your

  1604. shoulder

  1605. recently

  1606. or

  1607. are

  1608. you

  1609. more

  1610. like

  1611. the

  1612. second

  1613. guy

  1614. let

  1615. me

  1616. first

  1617. bury

  1618. my

  1619. father

  1620. let

  1621. me

  1622. first

  1623. do

  1624. this

  1625. Jesus

  1626. and

  1627. then

  1628. I've

  1629. got

  1630. time

  1631. for

  1632. you

  1633. let

  1634. me

  1635. first

  1636. finish

  1637. my

  1638. degree

  1639. it's

  1640. so

  1641. busy

  1642. and

  1643. maybe

  1644. then

  1645. I've

  1646. got

  1647. time

  1648. for

  1649. you

  1650. let

  1651. me

  1652. first

  1653. enjoy

  1654. my

  1655. life

  1656. and

  1657. then

  1658. maybe

  1659. when

  1660. I'm

  1661. old

  1662. and

  1663. weak

  1664. I

  1665. will

  1666. follow

  1667. you

  1668. let

  1669. me

  1670. first

  1671. be

  1672. successful

  1673. and

  1674. popular

  1675. let

  1676. me

  1677. first

  1678. let

  1679. me

  1680. first

  1681. or

  1682. are

  1683. you

  1684. the

  1685. first

  1686. man

  1687. you're

  1688. excited

  1689. to

  1690. walk

  1691. with

  1692. Jesus

  1693. you

  1694. want

  1695. to

  1696. follow

  1697. him

  1698. and

  1699. suddenly

  1700. you

  1701. realize

  1702. people

  1703. are

  1704. offended

  1705. by

  1706. Jesus

  1707. and

  1708. because

  1709. you

  1710. are

  1711. following

  1712. Jesus

  1713. they

  1714. might

  1715. even

  1716. be

  1717. nice

  1718. hobby

  1719. or

  1720. perhaps

  1721. you

  1722. started

  1723. reading

  1724. the

  1725. Bible

  1726. and

  1727. it

  1728. was

  1729. fascinating

  1730. but

  1731. then

  1732. you

  1733. realized

  1734. wow

  1735. Jesus

  1736. says

  1737. really

  1738. uncomfortable

  1739. things

  1740. here

  1741. and

  1742. now

  1743. this

  1744. has

  1745. become

  1746. difficult

  1747. that's

  1748. the point

  1749. of the

  1750. passage

  1751. let

  1752. me

  1753. say

  1754. being

  1755. a

  1756. disciple

  1757. of

  1758. Jesus

  1759. following

  1760. Jesus

  1761. comes

  1762. with a

  1763. cost

  1764. and

  1765. that

  1766. hurts

  1767. and

  1768. it

  1769. seems

  1770. paradox

  1771. because

  1772. we

  1773. talk

  1774. about

  1775. grace

  1776. being

  1777. free

  1778. but

  1779. grace

  1780. is

  1781. not

  1782. only

  1783. free

  1784. it

  1785. is

  1786. costly

  1787. and

  1788. just

  1789. like

  1790. Jesus

  1791. experienced

  1792. suffering

  1793. and

  1794. rejection

  1795. his

  1796. disciples

  1797. also

  1798. experienced

  1799. suffering

  1800. and

  1801. rejection

  1802. but

  1803. not

  1804. out of

  1805. their

  1806. own

  1807. willpower

  1808. depending

  1809. on

  1810. the

  1811. Holy

  1812. Spirit

  1813. Peter

  1814. you

  1815. remember

  1816. Peter

  1817. he

  1818. said

  1819. Jesus

  1820. I

  1821. will

  1822. follow

  1823. you

  1824. wherever

  1825. you

  1826. go

  1827. and

  1828. then

  1829. he

  1830. betrayed

  1831. Jesus

  1832. when

  1833. a

  1834. servant

  1835. girl

  1836. asked

  1837. him

  1838. if

  1839. he

  1840. knew

  1841. him

  1842. a

  1843. few

  1844. weeks

  1845. later

  1846. Peter

  1847. goes

  1848. and

  1849. preaches

  1850. to

  1851. thousands

  1852. of

  1853. people

  1854. and

  1855. later

  1856. gets

  1857. executed

  1858. for

  1859. following

  1860. Jesus

  1861. that

  1862. doesn't

  1863. come

  1864. just

  1865. out

  1866. of

  1867. your

  1868. willpower

  1869. that

  1870. is

  1871. something

  1872. God

  1873. gives

  1874. you

  1875. that

  1876. is

  1877. something

  1878. God

  1879. helps

  1880. you

  1881. with

  1882. and

  1883. it

  1884. still

  1885. happens

  1886. today

  1887. Bonhoeffer

  1888. had to

  1889. experience

  1890. this

  1891. too

  1892. his

  1893. cost

  1894. was

  1895. his

  1896. life

  1897. again

  1898. that

  1899. can

  1900. happen

  1901. probably

  1902. won't

  1903. happen

  1904. which

  1905. is

  1906. a

  1907. good

  1908. thing

  1909. but

  1910. for

  1911. him

  1912. it

  1913. was

  1914. worth

  1915. all

  1916. the

  1917. trouble

  1918. I

  1919. think

  1920. we

  1921. can

  1922. look

  1923. at

  1924. these

  1925. examples

  1926. and

  1927. just

  1928. stand

  1929. in

  1930. awe

  1931. and

  1932. be

  1933. inspired

  1934. by

  1935. that

  1936. and

  1937. say

  1938. wow

  1939. Dietrich

  1940. Bonhoeffer

  1941. realized

  1942. one

  1943. thing

  1944. grace

  1945. is

  1946. costly

  1947. and

  1948. he

  1949. writes

  1950. this

  1951. in

  1952. his

  1953. book

  1954. he

  1955. says

  1956. such

  1957. grace

  1958. is

  1959. costly

  1960. because

  1961. it

  1962. calls

  1963. us

  1964. to

  1965. follow

  1966. and

  1967. it's

  1968. grace

  1969. because

  1970. it

  1971. calls

  1972. us

  1973. to

  1974. follow

  1975. Jesus

  1976. Christ

  1977. it

  1978. is

  1979. costly

  1980. because

  1981. it

  1982. costs

  1983. a

  1984. man

  1985. his

  1986. life

  1987. and

  1988. it

  1989. is

  1990. grace

  1991. because

  1992. it

  1993. gives

  1994. a

  1995. man

  1996. the

  1997. only

  1998. true

  1999. life

  2000. it

  2001. is

  2002. costly

  2003. because

  2004. it

  2005. condemns

  2006. sin

  2007. and

  2008. it's

  2009. grace

  2010. because

  2011. it

  2012. justifies

  2013. the

  2014. sinner

  2015. above

  2016. all

  2017. it's

  2018. costly

  2019. because

  2020. it

  2021. cost

  2022. God

  2023. the

  2024. life

  2025. of

  2026. his

  2027. own

  2028. son

  2029. you

  2030. were

  2031. bought

  2032. at

  2033. a

  2034. price

  2035. and

  2036. what

  2037. has

  2038. cost

  2039. God

  2040. much

  2041. cannot

  2042. be

  2043. cheap

  2044. for

  2045. us

  2046. above

  2047. all

  2048. it

  2049. is

  2050. grace

  2051. because

  2052. God

  2053. did

  2054. not

  2055. reckon

  2056. his

  2057. son

  2058. too

  2059. dear

  2060. a

  2061. price

  2062. to

  2063. pay

  2064. for

  2065. your

  2066. life

  2067. but

  2068. delivered

  2069. him

  2070. up

  2071. for

  2072. us

  2073. costly

  2074. grace

  2075. is

  2076. the

  2077. incarnation

  2078. of

  2079. God

  2080. it's

  2081. in

  2082. that

  2083. that

  2084. we

  2085. see

  2086. that

  2087. it's

  2088. only

  2089. because

  2090. Jesus

  2091. became

  2092. like

  2093. us

  2094. that

  2095. we

  2096. can

  2097. become

  2098. like

  2099. him

  2100. so

  2101. let me

  2102. ask

  2103. you

  2104. this

  2105. morning

  2106. are

  2107. you

  2108. following

  2109. Christ

  2110. are

  2111. you

  2112. following

  2113. Jesus

  2114. if

  2115. yes

  2116. think

  2117. about

  2118. what

  2119. the

  2120. text

  2121. says

  2122. that

  2123. Jesus

  2124. is

  2125. your

  2126. number

  2127. one

  2128. priority

  2129. that

  2130. he

  2131. is

  2132. walking

  2133. against

  2134. the

  2135. stream

  2136. of

  2137. culture

  2138. that

  2139. being

  2140. a

  2141. Christian

  2142. is

  2143. difficult

  2144. and

  2145. some

  2146. people

  2147. won't

  2148. like

  2149. it

  2150. but

  2151. it's

  2152. worth

  2153. it

  2154. if

  2155. you're

  2156. not

  2157. following

  2158. Christ

  2159. yet

  2160. consider

  2161. this

  2162. all

  2163. of

  2164. these

  2165. three

  2166. encounters

  2167. with

  2168. Jesus

  2169. were

  2170. very

  2171. specific

  2172. !

  2173. He

  2174. says

  2175. follow me

  2176. today

  2177. if

  2178. you look

  2179. around

  2180. and you

  2181. will see

  2182. a lot

  2183. of

  2184. people

  2185. who

  2186. are

  2187. following

  2188. Jesus

  2189. and

  2190. I

  2191. encourage

  2192. you

  2193. speak

  2194. to

  2195. those

  2196. people

  2197. and

  2198. you

  2199. will

  2200. see

  2201. that

  2202. that

  2203. has

  2204. been

  2205. the

  2206. best

  2207. decision

  2208. in

  2209. their

  2210. life

  2211. you

  2212. can

  2213. talk

  2214. to

  2215. me

  2216. as

  2217. well

  2218. I'm

  2219. happy

  2220. to

  2221. testify

  2222. for

  2223. that

  2224. Jesus

  2225. says

  2226. come

  2227. to

  2228. me

  2229. all

  2230. of

  2231. you

  2232. who

  2233. are

  2234. weary

  2235. and

  2236. burdened

  2237. and

  2238. I

  2239. will

  2240. give

  2241. you

  2242. rest

  2243. take

  2244. my

  2245. yoke

  2246. upon

  2247. you

  2248. and

  2249. learn

  2250. from

  2251. me

  2252. for

  2253. I

  2254. am

  2255. gentle

  2256. and

  2257. humble

  2258. in

  2259. heart

  2260. and

  2261. you

  2262. will

  2263. find

  2264. rest

  2265. for

  2266. your

  2267. souls

  2268. for

  2269. my

  2270. yoke

  2271. is

  2272. easy

  2273. and

  2274. my

  2275. burden

  2276. is

  2277. light

  2278. if

  2279. you're

  2280. not

  2281. sure

  2282. about

  2283. him

  2284. yet

  2285. that's

  2286. okay

  2287. but

  2288. let

  2289. me

  2290. tell

  2291. you

  2292. he

  2293. was

  2294. sure

  2295. about

  2296. you

  2297. when

  2298. he

  2299. died

  2300. on

  2301. that

  2302. cross

  2303. would

  2304. you

  2305. consider

  2306. that

  2307. let

  2308. us

  2309. pray

  2310. holy

  2311. father

  2312. we

  2313. stand

  2314. in

  2315. awe

  2316. at

  2317. what

  2318. Jesus

  2319. has

  2320. done

  2321. for

  2322. us

  2323. when

  2324. he

  2325. was

  2326. on

  2327. the

  2328. road

  2329. to

  2330. Jerusalem

  2331. seeing

  2332. the

  2333. cross

  2334. and

  2335. everything

  2336. that

  2337. was

  2338. put

  2339. before

  2340. him

  2341. and

  2342. yet

  2343. he

  2344. considered

  2345. it

  2346. a

  2347. joy

  2348. and

  2349. we

  2350. give

  2351. thanks

  2352. that

  2353. he

  2354. did

  2355. that

  2356. for

  2357. us

  2358. so

  2359. we

  2360. could

  2361. live

  2362. freely

  2363. and

  2364. alive

  2365. in

  2366. abundance

  2367. father

  2368. I

  2369. pray

  2370. that

  2371. you

  2372. would

  2373. move

  2374. our

  2375. hearts

  2376. that

  2377. you

  2378. would

  2379. help

  2380. us

  2381. come

  2382. to

  2383. an

  2384. acceptance

  2385. with

  2386. this

  2387. passage

  2388. and

  2389. understand

  2390. what

  2391. it

  2392. is

  2393. you

  2394. ask

  2395. for

  2396. us

  2397. help

  2398. us

  2399. realize

  2400. that

  2401. it

  2402. is

  2403. Jesus

  2404. who

  2405. died

  2406. for

  2407. us

  2408. so

  2409. we

  2410. could

  2411. live

  2412. for

  2413. him

  2414. in

  2415. Jesus

  2416. name

  2417. we

  2418. pray

  2419. Amen!
