  1. Let's just bow our heads in prayer as we stand, please.

  2. Father, you know what our hearts are really like.

  3. You know, Father, the things that we say to ourselves.

  4. You know the inclination of our hearts.

  5. And, Father, you know how, especially for Christians,

  6. we often live in denial of this or pretend to be something different than we actually are.

  7. But we give you thanks and praise, Father, that you know each of us perfectly and completely,

  8. and still you love us.

  9. And so, Father, we ask that your word would come into our hearts

  10. and that you would rule in our hearts through your word,

  11. that the gospel would become more deeply real to our heart

  12. and would form the inclinations of our heart and how we speak to ourselves

  13. so that we might live free and whole and beautiful lives to your glory.

  14. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. I guess Jono mentioned the couple of people who are sort of trained on the slide.

  17. Neither of them are here today, so we have somebody wonderfully stepping in.

  18. But you might not see some of the scripture text up on the screen when I refer to it.

  19. But it's all just a good reason, a good, not a good excuse,

  20. a good reason to have your own Bibles with you.

  21. And because we're going to be looking at the Bible.

  22. And if you're a guest here, of course, there's the screen available.

  23. There's also always some free Bibles over here that you're welcome to come and take for the service

  24. or take home if you want.

  25. We've had a couple of weeks of very, very hot weather.

  26. And after a couple of days of hot weather, I went into one of the coffee shops,

  27. which is that I'm a regular at.

  28. And I wondered why the doors were open on such a hot day.

  29. But as soon as I stepped inside the coffee shop,

  30. I understood why the doors were open because the air conditioning wasn't working.

  31. And I saw the poor barista.

  32. And she had, like, literally sweat just running down her forehead

  33. and looking very sort of pale from the excessive heat.

  34. And I said, how's it going?

  35. And her response was, well, I'm living the life.

  36. I'm living the life.

  37. And we're all really familiar with that phrase, I'm living the life.

  38. And usually we use it in situations like that when we're doing something

  39. which is the opposite of the good life.

  40. But behind that comment, of course, is that if we really could,

  41. what we really know that we should be doing, we're trying to do,

  42. or if we were more successful, we would do is that we would be living the good life.

  43. And the Bible text that we're going to look at today, believe it or not,

  44. actually asks that question about what it means to live the good life.

  45. And it's a little bit surprising.

  46. Even Christians often, when they want to understand how to live the good life,

  47. don't actually think that the Bible is going to give them the type of wisdom that they need.

  48. But we should.

  49. Partially we're just affected by our culture.

  50. And for many people outside the walls, and maybe for some of you here,

  51. or maybe for some of you not that long ago,

  52. the last place you would have looked to get some advice about what the good life is like.

  53. Well, actually, I think one of the things that's going to surprise us is that this psalm,

  54. it actually has many of the same aspects that our culture would have about what the good life is.

  55. But it's sort of subversive to how we think about the good life.

  56. And in fact, actually, it both subverts what we think of the good life,

  57. but it actually gives us what we really want at a deeper level.

  58. So it both fulfills our desires and it subverts our desires so it can fulfill our desires.

  59. Even though many people in our world would never think of looking to the Bible

  60. for some insight about what to live as the good life.

  61. Well, let's look.

  62. If you have your Bibles, we're looking at Psalm 34.

  63. We're in the summer of the Psalms.

  64. And right at the very heart, the center of the psalm, in verse 12,

  65. that's where we're going to begin, where this question is asked.

  66. Look what it says, verse 12 of Psalm 34.

  67. What man or woman is there who desires life and loves many days that he may see good?

  68. Now, what this is, it's a bit of a poetic question, but it really is saying,

  69. don't we all want to live a good life?

  70. And what the good life is going to look like, of course, is that it's going to be,

  71. we desire more and more of life.

  72. We want to have many days and we want to have those many days of long life

  73. characterized by goodness, the good life.

  74. Very, very obvious.

  75. If a teenager was praying that they would live the good life

  76. and they died in three months, they would think that they hadn't lived the good life.

  77. They don't want to just live the good life for a couple of months and then die.

  78. They'd like to have a long life, which is a good life.

  79. And that's the question.

  80. So who wants to figure out how to have more life, more life and longer days and see good?

  81. Really, who wants to live the good life?

  82. Now, it's very curious that this question is being asked in this particular psalm,

  83. because the context within which the psalm was written would suggest that it couldn't possibly

  84. be a meditation upon the good life, or at least not without being sort of a complaint.

  85. In fact, you would expect the person who wrote the psalm to be like the barista in the coffee

  86. shop where the air conditioning wasn't working.

  87. And I asked them how it was going and they said, I'm living the life.

  88. If you have your Bibles, I don't think it's up on the screen.

  89. The psalm begins with a little superscript.

  90. And this is a bit of a side thing.

  91. Some Christians don't know this.

  92. Like in my version of the Bible, there's a little thing by the editor that names the

  93. psalm, Taste and See That the Lord is Good.

  94. But that's just written by the editor.

  95. That's just, you know, if a couple of us were putting together the Bible and we wanted to

  96. try to give the psalm a title, we'd do that because it helps modern readers.

  97. It's not the Bible.

  98. It's just the editors.

  99. But underneath it, there's this little thing.

  100. And it says of David when he changed his behavior before Abimelech so that he drove him out and

  101. he went to wait.

  102. Jono read it for us, wherever Jono is.

  103. I thought he was sitting there.

  104. He's somewhere over, somewhere else.

  105. He's at the back.

  106. And that actually is part of the Bible.

  107. It's not just done by the editor.

  108. It's actually part of the Bible.

  109. And in fact, if you're ever talking to a Jewish friend about a psalm, you're going to maybe get

  110. a bit confused with the verses because in the Jewish Bible, that bit that I just read

  111. of David when he changed his behavior before Abimelech so that he drove him out and he went

  112. away, that's actually verse one for them.

  113. And so what we count as verse one would be for their verse two.

  114. It's why if you look, sometimes you'll see that in the Hebrew Bible, they almost always

  115. seem to have one verse more than us.

  116. That's just the reason.

  117. They actually include that as a verse.

  118. But here's the point.

  119. Now, David is the person who wrote this psalm, and he's asking the question about who would

  120. like to live the good life.

  121. But he's asking this after he's had, in the midst of having what all of us would say is

  122. a completely and utterly terrible life.

  123. He'd risen from obscurity to being sort of in the pinnacle of the kingdom.

  124. And at the pinnacle of the kingdom, the king became massively jealous of him and decided

  125. that he was going to kill David.

  126. And David had to flee.

  127. And while he was fleeing and being pursued by the king, he decided that he had to get

  128. out of the country where the king was going to capture him and kill him.

  129. So he went to a neighboring country thinking he would have some sanctuary there.

  130. But when he gets to the neighboring country, the king of that country gets intimidated by

  131. him.

  132. And his advisors say, listen, isn't this the guy who's a massive military campaigner and

  133. he's just come here to take us over?

  134. And David was worried that he was going to die.

  135. So what David did is he pretended to be insane.

  136. He pretended that he was psychotic and having a psychotic episode.

  137. And it describes that in another part of what we call the Old Testament, our Jewish friends

  138. called the Tanakh, that he let drool come down his beard and he started gnawing the door

  139. frames and stuff like that.

  140. And as a result of that, Abimelech says, listen, don't I have enough crazy and insane people

  141. in my country?

  142. Why do I need another one?

  143. Like, kick him out of the country.

  144. And so David is writing this after he's had to pretend he's psychotic.

  145. The king of Israel is trying to kill him.

  146. The king of Gath, if he realized that David wasn't insane, would kill him.

  147. He's homeless, separated from his family, running for his life.

  148. And he asks the question, not ironically, he doesn't say, I'm living the life.

  149. He says, who wants to live the good life?

  150. Now, right off the bat, if we realize this, it should pique our interest.

  151. Because when Canadians talk about living the good life, one of the big problems we have

  152. when we Canadians talk about the good life is we can't conceive of how the good life can

  153. coexist with hard times.

  154. Many of you have probably seen a woman who went by the name of Nightbird in America's

  155. Got Talent and a conversation she had with Simon Cole when she was on America's Got Talent

  156. to sing.

  157. And if you haven't seen it, it's really worth Googling, not Dream Church, After Church, Google

  158. Nightbird, America's Got Talent.

  159. And it's her first time before them.

  160. And no spoiler alert or anything like that.

  161. She's big, beaming smile.

  162. She looks very skinny.

  163. And they're asking her how she is.

  164. And then she reveals that she has cancer throughout her body and has only a 2% chance of survival.

  165. And the whole audience is completely and utterly shocked.

  166. Now, by the way, Nightbird's a Christian, which isn't obvious in this.

  167. If you do some other searches, you discover that she's a Christian.

  168. And she says something to the effect of, after there's been this back and forward about

  169. her situation and everything, and she said, you know, we can't wait until we don't have

  170. any hard times.

  171. Basically, she says something like this.

  172. We can't wait until we don't have any hard times before we decide to be happy.

  173. And she says it looking right at Simon Cowell.

  174. It actually moves.

  175. You see him having to fight tears when she says it.

  176. You see, because in our culture, we all want the good life, but we can't conceive of how

  177. the good life can exist in adversity and hard times.

  178. For Simon Cowell and all of the judges, it's impossible for them to get their mind around

  179. the fact that she has only a 2% chance of survival for cancer and yet had a sense of peace and

  180. a sense of joy.

  181. And if you hear her song, she knocks it out of the park.

  182. She really does.

  183. Just knocks it out of the park.

  184. So, it's curious then that David, when he should be being ironic and saying that I'm

  185. far from the good life, he's going to describe the good life while he's homeless and being

  186. pursued by the authorities and separated from his family.

  187. Now, it's even more shocking if we see just went before this question.

  188. So, if you have your Bibles, look at what he says.

  189. So, verse 12 is the question.

  190. What man is there who desires life and loves many days that he may see good?

  191. But look what actually is just before it.

  192. And in the structure of the psalm, verses 1 to 10 is testimony and then 11 to 22 is teaching,

  193. but it's the very center of the psalm.

  194. And look at the question.

  195. O come, O children, listen to me.

  196. I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

  197. What man is there who desires life and loves many days that he may see good?

  198. Now, isn't that really weird?

  199. Like, in fact, before I studied this psalm, I think this is the first time I've ever preached

  200. on the psalm.

  201. I had never really struck me the connection between the fear of the Lord and living the good life.

  202. In fact, actually, for many people, even for Christians, there's a large number of Christians

  203. who somehow think that once you know Jesus and have the Holy Spirit, that you'll no longer fear the Lord.

  204. But that's actually not correct.

  205. The New Testament teaches us to fear the Lord.

  206. But for many others, this phrase is everything that's wrong about Christianity,

  207. that it shouldn't be the fear of the Lord, but the love of the Lord, or the peace of the Lord,

  208. or the joy of the Lord, and that the fear of the Lord somehow is a discordant note.

  209. It's something that goes against that.

  210. And yet before...

  211. But here he's connecting the fear of the Lord to giving the good life.

  212. Now, I don't know where you all are with Jesus.

  213. I'm going to share with you something.

  214. If you wouldn't understand yourself as a follower of Jesus,

  215. or if you're watching this online and you wouldn't think of yourself as a follower of Jesus,

  216. I want to share with you something that you might not know.

  217. And that is this, that even for Christians,

  218. we struggle with a type of whispering that goes on inside of our head.

  219. And the whispering that goes on inside of our head first began in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  220. where the serpent, the devil, the dragon, the devil, the serpent, the worm,

  221. is speaking to Adam and Eve.

  222. And what he starts to whisper in their ears,

  223. and that reverberates even today for those of us who would consider ourselves Christians,

  224. the whispering is,

  225. if you want to live the good life,

  226. you have to not be in the center of God's will.

  227. You need to be outside of God's will.

  228. Just a tiny bit.

  229. You don't want to be really crazy.

  230. But just be careful.

  231. You'll get hurt if you're in the center of God's will.

  232. Because to live the good life,

  233. you've got to be a little bit outside of God's will.

  234. And that's the whisper in the heart of every Christian,

  235. which we have to fight.

  236. And it's the whisper I would actually say

  237. for every human being on the planet.

  238. Be careful about the triune God and Jesus.

  239. Don't think that by being in the center of Jesus' will,

  240. you'll really experience the good life.

  241. You know, don't think about sex and money.

  242. You've got to be a little bit outside.

  243. And that's part of the reason why you see for most of us,

  244. like before I became a Christian,

  245. I didn't want Christianity to be true.

  246. But it's a constant whisper in the human heart.

  247. And this beginning challenges this.

  248. Look again at what it says in verse 11.

  249. Come, O children, listen to me.

  250. I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

  251. Like really right in there with the Lord.

  252. I'm going to explain what it means more towards the end.

  253. But what, what, what, I'm going to teach you the fear of the Lord.

  254. Why should you be interested in the fear of the Lord?

  255. Well, what man is there who desires life and loves many days that he may see good?

  256. Like, don't you all want to live the good life?

  257. So you've got to know about the fear of the Lord if you want to live the good life.

  258. Who talks like that?

  259. Well, the Bible talks like that.

  260. And I think it's wise.

  261. Look how wise it actually is.

  262. And it's wiser than how we think as Canadians.

  263. Look at what he says first in verse 13.

  264. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceit.

  265. Turn away from evil and do good.

  266. Seek peace and pursue it.

  267. So verse 13 again.

  268. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

  269. Turn away from evil and do good.

  270. And seek peace and pursue it.

  271. A couple of years ago, I've used this.

  272. Some of you might have heard this illustration before.

  273. But a couple of years ago, I think it was in the National Post or the Citizen, something like that.

  274. They were interviewing a famous actress.

  275. And it was a very, you know, like a puff piece actress sort of showing her wisdom and her insight and stuff like that.

  276. And, you know, she had some wisdom and insight about stuff.

  277. But one of the questions they asked her is if there was one thing you could change that would make your life way better, what would it be?

  278. And the answer was there would be no guilt.

  279. I'd have no guilt.

  280. And the interview went on and it obviously took that to being a very, very glowing and insightful type of thing.

  281. Like, what a wise thing to ask.

  282. But what they didn't realize is this.

  283. She just asked to be a psychopath.

  284. She just asked to be a sociopath.

  285. People who don't feel guilt.

  286. That's what we call them.

  287. Psychopaths or sociopaths.

  288. And it never struck her or the interviewer that her idea of what the good life would be is to be a psychopath.

  289. Well, obviously, it's not going to be.

  290. That can't be the good life.

  291. Right?

  292. Like, that's the opposite of a good life.

  293. It's actually one of those things that doesn't matter if you're progressive or right wing or whatever.

  294. If you want to describe the opposite of a good life, you talk about psychopaths and sociopaths.

  295. And yet, you see, when the Bible here says, in verse 13, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit, it's talking about your inner life.

  296. You know, I know most of us at times, some of us way too often, we speak, speak, speak, speak, then think.

  297. Right?

  298. And really, part of the good life is think, then speak.

  299. And if we could do that more often, like think, think more deeply, then speak, like we'd have a lot less conflict in our lives and have a better life.

  300. So it's really not just so much talking about what we say.

  301. It's talking about our inner life, what's going on in our inner life.

  302. And what it's saying is that one of the things that the fear of the Lord does is it helps us to have a proper inner life in regards to the good and in regards to truth.

  303. Now, you see, that's actually probably what the actress wanted.

  304. You see how all of a sudden, remember I said how one of the things that this psalm does, it both, it subverts what we think is wise, but actually fulfills what we want to have.

  305. And what she's really trying to express is I'd really rather have a whole good relationship with the truth and a whole good relationship with what's true.

  306. I mean, with truth and goodness.

  307. That's what she'd really like to have.

  308. But she doesn't understand that if she got rid of guilt, she'd become a psychopath and a sociopath, the opposite of a person who's going to live the good life.

  309. And you see that the other next part of it is just as wise.

  310. Look what it says.

  311. If you want to have the good life, you have to understand the fear of the Lord.

  312. What will the fear of the Lord do?

  313. It's verse 14.

  314. Turn away from evil and do good.

  315. Seek peace and pursue it.

  316. Now it's talking about what you do and what you pursue.

  317. So the first part's talking about your inner life.

  318. The next part's talking about what you do and also talking about what you're pursuing, where you're headed.

  319. And it's very, very interesting because it says that we're going to turn away from evil and do good.

  320. And it's not just turning away from evil and it's not just doing good.

  321. It's doing both.

  322. And if we think about it, it's very, very wise.

  323. That it's not maybe like if you go, let's say that same barista,

  324. and I came in and she snapped at me and she was really grumpy at me.

  325. And I might just get on my hind legs and say,

  326. one moment, she can't snap at me like that.

  327. I can snap way better back at her.

  328. And I do.

  329. And I give it to her.

  330. Right?

  331. And then I walk away and I get my coffee and she's even in a worse mood.

  332. And I'm in a worse mood.

  333. Or maybe I'm a little bit happy that I really got her with a zinger.

  334. But afterwards, I'm really thinking to myself,

  335. you know what really would have been far, far better

  336. is to say a word of kindness to her and encouragement.

  337. See, it's not only that I shouldn't have just blasted her with my tongue,

  338. it's that I should have used my tongue in some way that was actually going to do good for her.

  339. Isn't that more like what we want with the good life?

  340. That's exactly what we want with the good life.

  341. And this other thing about seeking peace and pursuing it,

  342. well, every time you see the word peace in the Old Testament,

  343. almost every time,

  344. we tend to misinterpret it by interpreting it in emotional terms.

  345. And the Bible doesn't mean it in emotional terms.

  346. The Bible is referring to something structural about us in our life.

  347. So it would be as if my youngest son and my youngest daughter,

  348. let's say, one's an engineer, the other's an artist,

  349. and they decided they were going to do some type of a sculpture in a place like this.

  350. And they get some others to help them.

  351. And one of the things they decide to do in a place like this

  352. is they're going to make a very, very complicated mobile.

  353. You know, mobile, there's the sticks and the little,

  354. I know, usually you see them over cribs and, you know,

  355. little bunny rabbits or butterflies or angels or something that sort of moves around.

  356. But let's say they're going to do actually a very, very complicated one

  357. so that on one end, they're going to get the right type of steel.

  358. They're going to do all the mathematical calculations

  359. to make sure that the rods are able to hold it

  360. and the chain that's holding it to the ceiling is at the right distance.

  361. And they might have a very large thing, let's say, like a refrigerator at one end,

  362. but they have it so beautifully balanced

  363. that the other end of that same piece of stick

  364. are like three little delicate glass butterflies.

  365. And they've been so balanced that the whole thing holds it.

  366. And they do a whole pile of things like that at different heights,

  367. of different weights and different lengths.

  368. And you'd come in and you'd go, wow.

  369. Wow.

  370. Like that looks remarkable and beautiful.

  371. The balance and the harmony is really quite something.

  372. That is what the Bible means by peace.

  373. You see, it's the difference between...

  374. You know, in war movies, you see guys,

  375. they're getting shot and they're all in pain.

  376. And they're still in pain.

  377. Maybe they're even dying, but the medic gives them morphine.

  378. Well, they have some peace,

  379. but they're bleeding out and dying.

  380. It hasn't actually dealt with the problem.

  381. It's just given them a feeling.

  382. And you see, in our culture,

  383. inadvertently, when we think of the good life,

  384. we think of those feelings.

  385. But really what we're thinking of is we have a druggie,

  386. stoner image of the good life.

  387. You go, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  388. Well, actually, that's actually what you're longing for.

  389. Like, ironically.

  390. Like, tragically.

  391. And the Bible is pointing to something better,

  392. that the fear of the Lord

  393. is going to deal with your relationship inside of yourself

  394. to goodness and also to the truth.

  395. And it's also going to deal with your outer life

  396. of not only helping you turn away from evil,

  397. but also doing good things.

  398. And it's also going to involve you in a pursuit

  399. of that type of harmony and balance in your life.

  400. There's going to be really, really huge, massive things

  401. like death and heartache

  402. and also other massive things like marriage.

  403. And there's going to be the small little daily pleasures,

  404. like just really how unbelievably delicious

  405. freshly made blueberry scones are

  406. with butter and a cup of coffee.

  407. It's all the small things and the big things.

  408. And that's what we want.

  409. And that's what the Bible says.

  410. The fear of the Lord is going to help you

  411. and train you to pursue.

  412. And we end up tending to think of things

  413. in terms of a stoner mentality

  414. or sociopathic mentality.

  415. And then the fear of the Lord

  416. talks about something even more astounding.

  417. Something that if you're watching this

  418. and you don't know Christians,

  419. most Christians are terrified about talking

  420. in terms of things like heaven and hell.

  421. But the psalm, look what it says right next

  422. in verses 15 and 16.

  423. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous

  424. and his ears toward their cry.

  425. And the face of the Lord is against those who do evil

  426. to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

  427. Now, here's the thing.

  428. He's still talking about teaching of the fear of the Lord.

  429. And now he brings in the presence of the triune God.

  430. And he uses it in terms of the metaphor of the face.

  431. And he said,

  432. you know, the fear of the Lord,

  433. as you start to walk on it and enter into the path,

  434. what you see as you walk on the path

  435. and at the end of the path

  436. is that the face of the Lord is toward you.

  437. is toward you.

  438. You know, is toward you.

  439. It's like we just had my son Jesse visiting us.

  440. And he has a, you know, his youngest is Bronwyn.

  441. And, you know, she's at that age that she's, you know,

  442. chattering and wanting this and wanting that

  443. and wanting that.

  444. And Jesse's trying to have a conversation.

  445. But there's the moment when the dad, right,

  446. his face is toward her.

  447. And he looks at her.

  448. His face is toward her.

  449. His ears are toward her.

  450. He's with her.

  451. He sees her.

  452. He's listening to her.

  453. And she knows it.

  454. The other option,

  455. those of you who have ever counseled somebody

  456. who've been terribly, terribly, terribly, terribly betrayed,

  457. terribly abused.

  458. And maybe they've been terribly abused

  459. by their father or their mother.

  460. And you mention their father or their mother to them.

  461. And their face,

  462. their face

  463. is against them.

  464. They don't want to look.

  465. You can see by the setting of the jaw,

  466. the setting of the mouth,

  467. the setting of the eyes.

  468. You can see the anger.

  469. You can see that there

  470. there's not going to be any love towards them.

  471. And the image here,

  472. which is painted,

  473. I mean,

  474. we tend to think of things like heaven and hell

  475. and all of that,

  476. but it's actually painting

  477. of just a very,

  478. very stark image

  479. that any of us who know how faces work,

  480. that we can say that there's a way of life

  481. that is lived

  482. and ends

  483. with the Lord

  484. looking at you

  485. and seeing you

  486. and hearing you.

  487. and there's affection

  488. and there's fatherly concern

  489. and desire

  490. where there's a face

  491. that's hardened

  492. and turned away.

  493. The fear of the Lord

  494. walking it

  495. is a walk

  496. with a father in heaven

  497. who looks at you like that.

  498. And it's a walk

  499. that ends

  500. with him looking at you like that.

  501. And to walk outside

  502. of the fear of the Lord

  503. is to walk

  504. with the father

  505. looking at you

  506. in that other way

  507. and it ends with that.

  508. But if you think about it

  509. for a second,

  510. you see,

  511. if we're going to actually

  512. live the good life,

  513. often when we think

  514. of the good life in Canada,

  515. we just think of,

  516. well,

  517. we just think of endless repose.

  518. We just think of

  519. endless consumer goods.

  520. We just think of

  521. one day after another

  522. with blue skies

  523. and sunny skies

  524. and there can't be affliction

  525. and there can't be hardship

  526. and we have to somehow

  527. or another,

  528. if we're to live the good life,

  529. be completely

  530. and utterly insulated

  531. and inoculated like that.

  532. But if you think about it

  533. for a second,

  534. that type of a picture

  535. that we as Canadians

  536. desire

  537. when we sort of imagine

  538. the good life

  539. of just endless consumption

  540. and good clothes

  541. and good weather

  542. and no hardship

  543. and no adversity,

  544. in science fiction movies

  545. where there's a dystopia,

  546. they're the bad guys.

  547. They're the cruel,

  548. heartless people

  549. up in the sky

  550. while the people

  551. down on earth

  552. are suffering

  553. with the pollution

  554. and no food.

  555. That's,

  556. you know,

  557. if it's in the train,

  558. it's the front of the train

  559. where they're all like that

  560. and the back of the train

  561. where people are suffering

  562. and at the heart of us

  563. what we actually desire

  564. is a good life

  565. where we're the bad guy

  566. and we go,

  567. oh no,

  568. but no,

  569. that's what you're desiring

  570. and what's it like,

  571. you know,

  572. and then,

  573. and then,

  574. and those other types

  575. of science fiction movies

  576. where there are people

  577. like that,

  578. what happens to them?

  579. They start to despair

  580. because a day after,

  581. blue sky after blue sky

  582. and all your food

  583. being met

  584. and it doesn't actually

  585. feel your heart

  586. with meaning,

  587. it feels you with despair.

  588. You know,

  589. there's a very telling phrase

  590. in the book of Revelation

  591. which describes

  592. so many things

  593. in science fiction movies

  594. where they,

  595. they describe,

  596. it describes a time

  597. where they long for death

  598. and cannot have it.

  599. That's all the old vampire movies,

  600. the despair,

  601. not the new ones

  602. where they try to make them

  603. look cool.

  604. It's all part of trying

  605. to rehabilitate evil,

  606. rehabilitate the serpent.

  607. You see,

  608. all of a sudden

  609. we realize

  610. that one moment,

  611. life,

  612. if it's going to be good,

  613. we're going to have

  614. the right relationship

  615. internally to goodness

  616. and truth

  617. and we're going to have

  618. the right relationship,

  619. we're going to turn away

  620. from evil,

  621. we're going to do good

  622. and we're going to speak,

  623. we're not going to just seek

  624. superficial stoner types

  625. of peace

  626. but actually get our life

  627. in some type of balance

  628. and harmony

  629. and have those big things

  630. and those small things

  631. and we're going to have

  632. some type of a direction

  633. to our life

  634. and you know,

  635. one of the things

  636. which is so wonderful

  637. about this description,

  638. it made me think

  639. of that great old hymn,

  640. Great is Thy Faithfulness

  641. and this explains

  642. to those outside

  643. the Christian faith

  644. the emotional power

  645. and beauty

  646. of a person

  647. who's been captivated

  648. by the gospel.

  649. Listen how it goes,

  650. pardon for sin

  651. and a peace

  652. that endureth

  653. thine own dear presence

  654. to cheer

  655. and to guide

  656. strength for today

  657. and bright hope

  658. for tomorrow

  659. blessings all mine

  660. with ten thousand

  661. beside.

  662. Now,

  663. the psalm continues

  664. and you might wonder,

  665. George,

  666. you're just some type

  667. of special person

  668. that knows how

  669. to fear the Lord

  670. or you're saying

  671. that all these things happen,

  672. you see,

  673. and you still haven't,

  674. well,

  675. look how the psalm continues.

  676. Now,

  677. one of the things

  678. which is really shocking

  679. about this psalm,

  680. we're going to continue

  681. reading it at verse 17,

  682. is that Jesus shows up

  683. in this psalm

  684. that was written

  685. a thousand years

  686. before Jesus.

  687. I'm not making it up,

  688. Jesus shows up

  689. in the psalm.

  690. Look at verse 17

  691. and see what happens.

  692. When the righteous

  693. cry for help,

  694. the Lord hears

  695. and delivers them

  696. out of all their troubles.

  697. The Lord is near

  698. to the brokenhearted

  699. and saves

  700. the crushed in spirit.

  701. Now,

  702. just as an aside,

  703. you see,

  704. we Canadians

  705. can't think of

  706. how the good life

  707. can be with hardship,

  708. but if we imagine

  709. a world of a good life

  710. without hardship,

  711. we've actually imagined

  712. ourselves in the bad guise

  713. of all science fiction movies,

  714. dystopias,

  715. and here we're saying

  716. that that great peace,

  717. that huge mobile

  718. that God is going to form

  719. in your life

  720. through the fear of the Lord,

  721. that has the room in there

  722. for the hard things

  723. and the good things.

  724. It's maybe not just a fridge,

  725. but a terrible burden

  726. on one end

  727. and it has the scones

  728. with blueberry and butter

  729. and coffee

  730. at the other end

  731. and it's all overseen

  732. by God

  733. and you don't,

  734. you have his own dear presence

  735. to cheer and to guide,

  736. but Jesus still hasn't shown up.

  737. Look what happens next,

  738. verse 19.

  739. Many are the afflictions

  740. of the righteous,

  741. but the Lord delivers him

  742. out of them all.

  743. He keeps all his bones.

  744. Not one of them is broken.

  745. If you don't know your Bible

  746. very well,

  747. in the Gospel of John,

  748. Jesus dies on the cross

  749. and because it's the Sabbath,

  750. the other two men

  751. haven't died

  752. and the religious authorities

  753. ask that the Roman authorities

  754. would break the bones

  755. of the two men

  756. so that they would die

  757. and they wouldn't have to be

  758. up on the Sabbath dying.

  759. And so the soldiers

  760. go and break both bones

  761. and the men die,

  762. but they come to Jesus

  763. and Jesus is already dead.

  764. And the centurion

  765. takes a spear

  766. and pierces it

  767. into Jesus' side

  768. and out of the side

  769. comes blood and water

  770. and they don't break his bones.

  771. And John says,

  772. this fulfills the prophecy

  773. that says,

  774. he keeps all his bones.

  775. Not one of them is broken.

  776. Jesus shows up in the psalm

  777. in his crucifixion.

  778. He keeps all his crucifixion.

  779. See, my only hope

  780. to learn how to fear the Lord

  781. isn't because I'm specific,

  782. I'm very righteous

  783. or I'm specifically holy

  784. or religious

  785. or anything like that.

  786. I mean,

  787. what the fear of the Lord

  788. text is here

  789. showing us too

  790. is, you know what?

  791. You need redemption by Jesus.

  792. You need redemption.

  793. David wrote of what

  794. he did not know.

  795. Why did he throw that line in

  796. unless he was inspired

  797. by the Holy Spirit?

  798. And God was going to show us

  799. this deep promise

  800. that God would do something

  801. for us in the person

  802. of his son

  803. where he does not weigh

  804. our merits

  805. but he pardons our offenses.

  806. Where the justice

  807. and the judgment

  808. that I deserve

  809. falls on him

  810. and the grace

  811. that he deserves

  812. is given to me.

  813. Like it even continues,

  814. affliction will slay the wicked

  815. and those who hate

  816. the righteous

  817. will be condemned.

  818. The Lord redeems

  819. the life of his servants.

  820. None of those

  821. who take refuge

  822. in him

  823. will be condemned.

  824. If you take refuge

  825. in Jesus,

  826. the condemnation

  827. you deserve

  828. is on him.

  829. The grace

  830. you don't deserve

  831. is given to you.

  832. Listen to how this theme

  833. is taken up

  834. and explained

  835. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  836. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:1

  837. verse 1

  838. declares,

  839. there is therefore

  840. now no condemnation

  841. for those

  842. who are in Christ Jesus.

  843. And that's remarkable

  844. and it goes on

  845. and talks more about it

  846. but listen to how

  847. Romans 8 ends

  848. in verse 31.

  849. What then shall we say

  850. to these things?

  851. If God is for us,

  852. who can be against us?

  853. He who did not

  854. spare his own son

  855. but gave him up

  856. for us all,

  857. how will he not

  858. also with him

  859. graciously give us

  860. all things?

  861. Who shall bring

  862. any charge

  863. against God's elect?

  864. It is God

  865. who justifies.

  866. Who is to condemn?

  867. Christ Jesus

  868. is the one

  869. who died.

  870. More than that,

  871. who was raised,

  872. who is at the right

  873. hand of God,

  874. who indeed is

  875. interceding for us.

  876. Who shall separate us

  877. from the love of Christ?

  878. Shall tribulation

  879. or distress

  880. or persecution

  881. or famine

  882. or nakedness

  883. or danger

  884. or sword?

  885. As it is written,

  886. for your sake

  887. we are being killed

  888. all the day long.

  889. We are regarded

  890. as sheep to be slaughtered.

  891. No!

  892. In all these things

  893. we are more than conquerors

  894. through him who loved us.

  895. For I am sure

  896. that neither death

  897. nor life

  898. nor angels

  899. nor rulers

  900. nor things

  901. present

  902. nor things

  903. to come

  904. nor powers

  905. nor height

  906. nor depth

  907. nor anything else

  908. in all creation

  909. will be able

  910. to separate us

  911. from the love of God

  912. in Christ Jesus

  913. our Lord.

  914. Amen!

  915. That is my hope

  916. in life and death.

  917. That is where

  918. the fear of the Lord

  919. begins

  920. and where it will end.

  921. You see,

  922. the fear of the Lord

  923. at its heart

  924. is a

  925. deep knowledge

  926. of the difference

  927. between God

  928. and you

  929. and where you begin

  930. and where you end.

  931. And you can't

  932. know that knowledge

  933. unless you're also

  934. Christ has worked

  935. in your heart

  936. to create peace

  937. between you

  938. and God.

  939. And you see,

  940. brothers and sisters,

  941. that's why it is

  942. that we should pray

  943. that we will learn

  944. to fear the Lord.

  945. It should be part

  946. of your daily prayer.

  947. Lord,

  948. help me today

  949. to grow in the fear

  950. of you.

  951. You know,

  952. when you pray

  953. that prayer,

  954. you're asking

  955. that he would start

  956. to heal your inner life

  957. in terms of goodness

  958. and truth.

  959. You're asking them

  960. to heal

  961. how you treat people

  962. and turn away

  963. from evil

  964. and pursue that

  965. which is good.

  966. You're asking him

  967. to help you

  968. to allow him

  969. to make that balance

  970. in your life

  971. that you need.

  972. You're asking

  973. that you might know

  974. that he is God

  975. and you're not

  976. so that you understand

  977. and experience

  978. his face

  979. looking towards you

  980. as you live your life,

  981. as you deal

  982. with hard things,

  983. as you deal

  984. with good things

  985. and know

  986. that at the end

  987. of the story

  988. that how the story

  989. ends is that

  990. you are redeemed

  991. and he looks at you

  992. with love and affection

  993. and welcomes you.

  994. And you see,

  995. I haven't read

  996. the beginning of the psalm.

  997. It's only if you understand

  998. how the psalm ends

  999. that you can understand

  1000. the outrageous promises

1001. of the first ten verses.

  1002. Let's read them

  1003. and we're going to

  1004. stand and pray.

  1005. Listen how,

  1006. you see,

1007. it's only if you understand

  1008. the end

  1009. that you understand

  1010. the beginning.

  1011. Listen how it goes

  1012. at the beginning.

  1013. Psalm 34, verse 1.

    Psalms 34:1

1014. I will bless the Lord

  1015. at all times.

  1016. His praise shall continually

  1017. be in my mouth.

1018. My soul makes its boast

  1019. in the Lord.

  1020. Let the humble hear

  1021. and be glad.

  1022. Oh, magnify the Lord

  1023. with me

  1024. and let us exalt

  1025. his name together.

  1026. I sought the Lord

  1027. and he answered me

  1028. and delivered me

  1029. from all my fears.

1030. Those who look to him

  1031. are radiant

  1032. and their faces

  1033. shall never be ashamed.

  1034. This poor man cried

1035. and the Lord heard him

  1036. and saved him

1037. out of all his troubles.

1038. The angels of the Lord

  1039. encamps around those

  1040. who fear him

  1041. and delivers them.

  1042. Oh, taste and see

1043. that the Lord is good.

  1044. Taste and see

1045. that the Lord is good.

  1046. Blessed is the man

1047. who takes refuge in him.

  1048. Oh, fear the Lord,

  1049. you his saints,

1050. for those who fear him

  1051. have no lack.

  1052. The young lions

  1053. suffer want and hunger,

  1054. but those who seek

  1055. the Lord

  1056. lack no good thing.

  1057. come, oh children,

  1058. listen to me.

  1059. Come, oh children,

  1060. listen to me.

  1061. I will teach you

1062. the fear of the Lord.

1063. I invite you to stand.

  1064. For those of you

  1065. who are in Christ,

  1066. we're going to pray

  1067. that the Lord

  1068. will help us

1069. to grow into fear the Lord.

1070. Why wouldn't we want that?

1071. Why wouldn't we want that?

  1072. And for those who

  1073. maybe have been far

  1074. from the Lord

  1075. for a long time,

  1076. this is your day

  1077. to renew your commitment

  1078. to him.

  1079. Every time we gather

  1080. around the Lord's table,

  1081. it's a time to renew

  1082. our commitment to Christ,

1083. to maybe say to him,

  1084. you know,

  1085. I've had,

  1086. Father,

  1087. I've had a really terrible,

1088. in terms of my walk

  1089. with you,

  1090. I've been absolutely terrible

  1091. for days,

  1092. weeks,

  1093. months,

  1094. years.

  1095. I thank you

1096. that you never let me go.

  1097. I recommit to you.

1098. And for those of you

1099. who are outside of the faith,

  1100. all,

  1101. you know,

  1102. I don't have,

  1103. there's no formula,

1104. just call out to him,

  1105. say,

  1106. Lord,

1107. I want the good life

  1108. as is described

  1109. in Psalm 34,

1110. and I give myself to you,

  1111. and thank you

  1112. that you'll take me.

1113. I give myself to you.

1114. That's all you need to pray.

  1115. Just say to him,

  1116. Psalm 34,

  1117. I want that.

  1118. I surrender.

1119. I take refuge in you

1120. that that might be my life,

  1121. that I might grow

  1122. in that direction.

  1123. Let's pray.

  1124. Father,

1125. we give you thanks and praise

  1126. that your word

1127. is wiser than the world,

1128. and we give you thanks

  1129. and praise

  1130. that even though

1131. there is a part of us

  1132. at times,

  1133. sometimes very loud,

  1134. that whispers

1135. that if we really want

1136. to live the good life,

1137. we have to step outside

  1138. of your will,

  1139. we ask,

  1140. Lord,

  1141. that you,

  1142. in your mercy,

1143. that you would help us

1144. to not only shut that out,

  1145. but that rather than

  1146. listen to that whisper,

  1147. that we would listen

  1148. to your word,

  1149. that we would listen

  1150. to Psalm 34,

  1151. that we would listen

  1152. to verses 11 and 12,

  1153. that that might,

  1154. Father,

  1155. that your word

  1156. might be that

  1157. which speaks to us

1158. very, very deep within us,

  1159. that we might learn

  1160. to memorize your word

  1161. and have that word

  1162. preached to us

1163. that we might live out of it,

1164. and we give you thanks

  1165. and praise

  1166. that you want us

  1167. to know you deeply

  1168. and to know that

  1169. you are God

1170. and that we are not

1171. and know where we begin

  1172. and end

  1173. and where you begin

  1174. and end

  1175. and to know that

  1176. is good

  1177. and we ask,

  1178. Father,

  1179. we ask,

  1180. Lord,

1181. that you would help us

  1182. to grow in that,

1183. that you would help us

1184. to grow in the fear

  1185. of the Lord,

  1186. that we might know

  1187. your presence

  1188. and your promise

  1189. and your comfort

  1190. as we deal with

  1191. the good times

  1192. and the bad

1193. and that we might know

  1194. that Christ

1195. is our hope of glory

  1196. and that in you

1197. your face is towards us

1198. and that when we finally

1199. see you face to face,

1200. we will see you smile.

  1201. We ask these things

1202. in the name of Jesus,

1203. your Son and our Savior,

1204. and all God's people said,

  1205. Amen.

  1206. Amen.

  1207. Amen.
